Changes in thyroid and vitamin A status in mink fed polyhalogenated-aromatic-hydrocarbon-contaminated carp from the Saginaw River, Michigan, USA

Bioaccumulation and biotransformation of 1,2-bis (2,4,6-tribromophenoxyethane) (BTBPE) and 1,2-dibromo-4-(1,2-dibromoethyl)-cyclohexane (TBECH) in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Despite the increasing production, use, and ubiquitous occurrence of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), little information is available regarding their fate in aquatic organisms. In this study, the bioaccumulation and biotransformation of two typical NBFRs, i.e., 1,2-bis (2,4,6-tribromophenoxyethane) (BTBPE) and 1,2-dibromo-4-(1,2-dibromoethyl)-cyclohexane (TBECH), were investigated in tissues of zebrafish (Danio rerio) being administrated a dose of target chemicals through their diet. Linear accumulation was observed for both BTBPE and TBECH in the muscle, liver, gonads, and brain of zebrafish, and the elimination of BTBPE and TBECH in all tissues followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, with the fastest depuration rate occurring in the liver. BTBPE and TBECH showed low bioaccumulation potential in zebrafish, with biomagnification factors (BMFs) < 1 in all tissues. Individual tissues' function and lipid content are vital factors affecting the distribution of BTBPE and TBECH. Stereoselective accumulation of TBECH enantiomers was observed in zebrafish tissues, with first-eluting enantiomers, i.e. E1-α-TBECH and E1-β-TBECH, preferentially accumulated. Additionally, the transformation products (TPs) in the zebrafish liver were comprehensively screened and identified using high-resolution mass spectrometry. Twelve TPs of BTBPE and eight TPs of TBECH were identified: biotransformation pathways involving ether cleavage, debromination, hydroxylation, and methoxylation reactions for BTBPE and hydroxylation, debromination, and oxidation processes for TBECH. Biotransformation is also a vital factor affecting the bioaccumulation potential of these two NBFRs, and the environmental impacts of NBFR TPs should be further investigated in future studies. The findings of this study provide a scientific basis for an accurate assessment of the ecological and environmental risks of BTBPE and TBECH.

Risk for animal and human health related to the presence of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in feed and food

The European Commission asked EFSA for a scientific opinion on the risks for animal and human health related to the presence of dioxins (PCDD/Fs) and DL-PCBs in feed and food. The data from experimental animal and epidemiological studies were reviewed and it was decided to base the human risk assessment on effects observed in humans and to use animal data as supportive evidence. The critical effect was on semen quality, following pre- and postnatal exposure. The critical study showed a NOAEL of 7.0 pg WHO2005-TEQ/g fat in blood sampled at age 9 years based on PCDD/F-TEQs. No association was observed when including DL-PCB-TEQs. Using toxicokinetic modelling and taking into account the exposure from breastfeeding and a twofold higher intake during childhood, it was estimated that daily exposure in adolescents and adults should be below 0.25 pg TEQ/kg bw/day. The CONTAM Panel established a TWI of 2 pg TEQ/kg bw/week. With occurrence and consumption data from European countries, the mean and P95 intake of total TEQ by Adolescents, Adults, Elderly and Very Elderly varied between, respectively, 2.1 to 10.5, and 5.3 to 30.4 pg TEQ/kg bw/week, implying a considerable exceedance of the TWI. Toddlers and Other Children showed a higher exposure than older age groups, but this was accounted for when deriving the TWI. Exposure to PCDD/F-TEQ only was on average 2.4- and 2.7-fold lower for mean and P95 exposure than for total TEQ. PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs are transferred to milk and eggs, and accumulate in fatty tissues and liver. Transfer rates and bioconcentration factors were identified for various species. The CONTAM Panel was not able to identify reference values in most farm and companion animals with the exception of NOAELs for mink, chicken and some fish species. The estimated exposure from feed for these species does not imply a risk.

Stereoselective bioaccumulation of syn- and anti-Dechlorane plus isomers in different tissues of common carp (Cyprinus carpio)

Common carps (Cyprinus carpio) were exposed to syn- and anti-Dechlorane Plus (DP) isomers to investigate absorption, tissue distribution, and stereoselective bioaccumulation of DP isomers. The absorption efficiencies of anti-DP in the gastrointestinal system were higher than those of syn-DP. A linear accumulation was found for both isomers in all fish tissues except for serum; and the liver and gill exhibited the highest and lowest DP assimilation efficiency, respectively. The elimination of DP isomers in all tissues followed first-order kinetics, with the fastest depuration rate occurring in the liver and serum. The biomagnification factors (BMFs) of both isomers were less than one in all tissues, except for serum. Anti-DP was preferably accumulated in the liver, gill, and serum, whereas syn-DP was selectively accumulated in the carcass and gastrointestinal tract. As a whole, fish did not show selective accumulation of the syn- or anti-DP isomer in the uptake stage, whereas a selective accumulation of syn-DP in fish was observed during the depuration period, which could be due to a selective excretion of anti-DP. Metabolism cannot be ruled out as a possible reason considering the high f_anti values and the high elimination rate of DPs in the liver.

Toxicity reference values for polybrominated diphenyl ethers: risk assessment for predatory birds and mammals from two Chinese lakes

PBDEs are persistent organic pollutants, and have the capability to produce adverse effects on organisms. Aquatic piscivorous species at higher trophic levels have the greatest exposure risk. Information on the toxic potency of a commercial PBDE mixture, DE-71, to mink and American kestrel was reviewed, and dietary- and tissue-based TRVs were derived and evaluated for ecological risk assessment of aquatic piscivorous species inhabiting wetland areas in China. The effect on mink thyroid function was identified as the most appropriate and protective endpoint for deriving the TRV s for mammals. The TRV was based on dietary exposure, and wa s0.1 mg DE-71/kg (wm) or 0.01 mg DE-71/kg (bm)/day (ADI); for liver of mammals,the TRV was 1.2 mg LPBDEslkg (lm). For birds, reproductive effects on American kestrels were used to derive the TRVs, in which an overall UF of 3.0 was used. The TRV was based on dietary exposure, and was 0.1 mg DE-71/kg (wm) or 0.018 mg DE-71/kg (bm)/day (ADI); for eggs of birds, the TRV was 2.35 jlgLPBDEs/g (lm). Reported concentrations of PBDEs in livers of aquatic mammals found dead, and in fish and bird eggs from Chinese wetland areas were compiled and compared to the corresponding criteria values. Results indicated that TRV values reported in this study can be used as indicators for screening-level risk assessment of piscivorous species in Chinese aquatic systems. Furthermore, based on monitoring concentrations of PBDEs in fishes from two lakes (DCL and TL) in China and the dietary-based TRV of 0.1 mg DE-71/kg (wm), a screening-level risk assessment of PBDEs was performed for predatory birds and mammals. The results suggest that concentrations of PBDEs in these two areas would not be expected to cause any adverse effects on the local fish-eating wild birds and mammals.

Proliferative thyroid lesions and hyperthyroidism in captive fishers (Martes pennanti)

Diseases of the thyroid gland are common in many zoo species, but there are few descriptions of thyroid dysfunction in Mustelidae. A 7-yr-old, captive-bred female fisher (Martes pennanti) with progressive alopecia was diagnosed with clinical hyperthyroidism based on persistent elevation of both total and free serum thyroxine and triiodothyronine, ultrasound examination, and histologic evidence of adenomatous hyperplasia. Four additional geriatric adult fishers (two male and two female) were identified with thyroid adenomatous hyperplasia in a review of 23 postmortem records. Banked sera were available for thyroid hormone testing from three of the four necropsy cases. Total and free thyroxine were elevated in four of four animals tested, and triiodothyronine was elevated in two of three animals tested. Necropsy findings in four cases identified cardiac hypertrophy, congestive heart failure, and vascular lesions consistent with hypertension; complete tissues were not available from the remaining case. Clinical and subclinical hyperthyroidism may be a common but overlooked condition of captive fishers.

Organohalogens in a whale-blubber-supplemented diet affects hepatic retinol and renal tocopherol concentrations in greenland sled dogs (Canis familiaris)

The aim of this study was to examine the plasma, liver, and kidney status of vitamin A (retinol) and vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) in two groups of Greenland sled dogs (Canis familiaris), with a total number of 16 bitches and 8 pups. The dogs were fed either minke whale (Balaenoptera acuterostrata) blubber (exposed dogs) or uncontaminated (control group) porcine fat for up to 12 to 21 mo of age. The daily intake of 50-200 g whale blubber (mean: 112 g) constituted between 10.4 and 11.7 microg/kg body weight summation operatororganohalogen contaminants (OHC) (or between 4.6 and 6.1 microg/kg body weight summation operatorpolychlorinated biphenyls [PCB]). Retinol was approximately 18% and alpha-tocopherol 22% higher in the diet of the exposed dogs compared to controls. In adipose tissue, mean of SigmaOHC was 92 ng/g lipid weight (lw) and 5005 ng/g lw for all control (n = 12) and exposed dogs (n = 10), respectively. Hepatic retinol correlated negatively with Sigma-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (SigmaDDT) and and Sigma-polybrominated diphenyl ethers (SigmaPBDE) for all exposed animals. A negative correlation between kidney alpha-tocopherol and SigmaPCB concentrations was observed, whereas two positive significant correlations were observed between kidney retinol and Sigma-chlordane-related compounds (SigmaCHL) and dieldrin concentrations. Hepatic alpha-tocopherol concentrations were significantly lower in exposed compared to controls, most likely due to a combination by OHC exposure and high dietary intake of unsaturated fatty acids. These results suggest that dietary exposure from OHC may, even at low concentrations, possibly affect retinol and alpha-tocopherol status in Arctic top predators.

Histological lesions in mink jaws are a highly sensitive biomarker of effect after exposure to TCDD-like chemicals: field and literature-based confirmations

The mink (Mustela vison) is one of the most sensitive mammals to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD)-like chemicals. By literature review we established that a histological lesion of the jaw bone of mink, evidenced by squamous epithelial hyperplasia in the gingival tissue that forms nests or cords that infiltrate the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone causing osteolysis of the mandible and maxilla that could lead to squamous cell carcinoma, is the most sensitive known biomarker of effect following exposure of mink to TCDD-like chemicals. Lesions have been observed when total TCDD toxic equivalents (TEQ: dioxins, furans, coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls or PCBs) in liver exceed 40 ng/kg wet weight (ww) or when total PCB exceeds 1698 ng/g ww. This is the second report of histological evidence of this lesion in wild-caught mink, and it is the first report of the lesion being grossly detectable in naturally exposed mink. Some mink living near the south shore of Lake Ontario (exposed to the lake's food web), but not inland mink (not exposed to the lake's food web), accumulate more than 40 ng total TEQ/kg or 1698 ng total PCB/kg in liver. Because of its sensitivity, the jaw lesion biomarker is very useful for assessing the health of wildlife populations exposed to TCDD-like chemicals.

Total PCBs, dioxin-furan TEQs, and total mercury concentrations in mink in and out of the Rochester Embayment area of concern near and inland from the shore of Lake Ontario

In terms of reproductive and other adverse outcomes after exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, and furans, the mink (Mustela vison) is one of the most sensitive mammals. Our objective was to determine if there are differences in the concentrations of total mercury (Hg), total PCBs, and dioxin-furan toxic equivalents (TEQs) between mink living in and out of the Rochester Embayment of Lake Ontario (RELO) Area of Concern (AOC) and between mink living near the shore of Lake Ontario and inland. Concentrations of total Hg in the brain, total PCBs and dioxin-furan TEQs in adipose, and total PCBs in liver were significantly higher for mink living near the shore of Lake Ontario than inland. For mink living in and out of the AOC, differences in total PCBs and dioxin-furan TEQs in adipose and the liver were substantial but not significant. Correlations among concentrations of total Hg, total PCBs, and dioxin-furan TEQs in mink were high. Our results suggest that contamination of mink living near the southern shore of Lake Ontario primarily comes from contact with the Lake Ontario food web, not from sources in the RELO AOC.

Chronic dietary exposure to environmental organochlorine contaminants induces thyroid gland lesions in Arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus)

The impact of dietary organochlorine (OC) exposure on thyroid gland pathology was studied in farmed male Arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus). The exposed group (n=16) was fed a diet based on wild minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) blubber as a main fat source in order to mimic the exposure to OC cocktails in the Artic environment. This resulted in an exposure of approximately 17 microg Sigma OC/kg day and a Sigma OC residue adipose tissue and liver concentration of 1700 and 4470 ng/gl.w., respectively, after 16 months of exposure. Control foxes (n=13) were fed a diet with pork (Sus scrofa) fat as a main fat source containing significantly lower OC concentrations. The food composition fed to the control and exposed group was standardized for nutrient contents. Four OC-related histopathological changes were found: (1) flat-epithelial-cell true thyroid cysts (TC) characterized by neutral content; (2) remnants of simple squamous epithelial-cell embryonic ducts containing neutral debris (EDN); (3) remnants of stratified squamous epithelial-cell embryonic ducts containing acid mucins often accompanied with debris of leukocyte inflammatory nature (EDM) and (4) disseminated thyroid C-cell hyperplasia (HPC). Of these, the prevalence of TC, EDN and HPC was significantly highest in the exposed group (chi(2) test: all p<0.04). The study shows that the OC mixture in minke whale blubber may cause development of thyroid gland cysts, C-cell hyperplasia and increase the prevalence of cystic remnants of embryonic ducts. The mechanism causing these effects could include endocrine disruption of the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis, a disturbance of the calcium homeostasis/metabolism or energy metabolism or immune suppression. Because concentrations of OCs are higher in wild Arctic foxes, it is likely that these animals could suffer from similar OC-induced thyroid gland pathological and functional changes.

Examination of isomer specific bioaccumulation parameters and potential in vivo hepatic metabolites of syn- and anti-Dechlorane Plus isomers in juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were exposed in the laboratory to elevated doses of syn- and anti-isomers of Dechlorane Plus (DP) via their diet for 49 days (uptake phase), followed by 112 days of untreated food (depuration phase) to examine bioaccumulation parameters and possible metabolic products. Three groups of 60 fish were used in the study. Two groups were exposed separately to food fortified with known concentrations of syn- (0.79 +/- 0.03 microg/g, lipid weight) and anti-DP (1.17 +/- 0.12 microg/g, lipid weight) while a third control group was fed unfortified food. Neither isomer reached steady-state after 49 days of exposure. Only the syn-isomer accumulated linearly in the fish (whole-body minus liver) during the dosing phase with a calculated uptake rate constant of 0.045 +/- 0.005 (arithmetic mean +/- 1 x standard error) nmoles per day. A similar uptake rate was also observed for this isomer in the liver. The elimination of both isomers from the whole fish (minus liver) obeyed first order depuration kinetics (syn-: r2 = 0.6427, p < 0.001, anti-: r2 = 0.5350, p < 0.005) with calculated half-lives (t1/2) of 53.3 +/- 13.1 (syn-) and 30.4 +/- 5.7 (anti-) days. Elimination of the isomers from the liver was difficult to interpret because of suspected enterohepatic circulation and redistribution of the isomers in the liver during clearance from other tissues. The biomagnification factor (BMF, determined in whole fish minus liver) of the syn-isomer (5.2) was greater than the anti-isomer (1.9) suggesting that the former isomer is more bioavailable. A suite of metabolites were screened for in the liver including dechlorinated, hydroxylated, methoxylated and methyl sulfone degradates. Even with the purposely high dose used in the uptake phase, none of these degradates could be detected in the extracts. This suggests that if metabolites of DP are detected in fish from aquatic food webs their presence is likely not from in vivo biotransformation of the parent compound.

Disruption of retinoid transport, metabolism and signaling by environmental pollutants

Although the assessment of circulatory levels of retinoids has become a widely used biomarker of exposure to environmental pollutants, the adverse effects caused by imbalance of the retinoid metabolism and signaling in wildlife are not known in detail. Retinoids play an important role in controlling such vital processes as morphogenesis, development, reproduction or apoptosis. Unlike other signaling molecules, retinoids are not strictly endogenous but they are derived from dietary sources of vitamin A or its precursors and thus they are sometimes referred to as 'dietary' hormones. Some environmental pollutants that affect embryogenesis, immunity or epithelial functions were also shown to interfere with retinoid metabolism and signaling in animals. This suggests that at least some of their toxic effects may be related to interaction with the retinoid metabolism, transport or signal transduction. This review summarizes in vivo and in vitro studies on interaction of environmental complex samples, pesticides, polychlorinated dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic compounds and other organic pollutants with physiology of retinoids. It sums up contemporary knowledge about levels of interaction and mechanisms of action of the environmental contaminants.

Toxicity reference values for mink exposed to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) equivalents (TEQs)

Dietary and tissue residue-based toxicity reference values (TRVs) were derived for mink from the published results of studies in which mink were exposed to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs), biphenyls (PCBs), or related compounds. Because the primary mechanism of toxic action at the least concentration for these compounds is related to activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), TRVs were described on the basis of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) equivalents (TEQ). Each published study was critically reviewed for its usefulness in deriving a TRV based on the following criteria: (1) close relatedness of the test species to the wildlife receptor of concern (only mink studies were reviewed in this paper); (2) chronic duration of exposure which included sensitive life stages to evaluate potential developmental and reproductive effects; (3) measurement of ecologically relevant endpoints; (4) availability of congener-specific data to calculate TEQ concentrations; and (5) minimal impact of co-contaminants. Dietary TRVs for mink exposed to TEQ ranged from 12.1 to 56.6 ng TEQ/kg feed (wet weight) for the no observable adverse effect level (NOAEL) and from 50.4 to 242 ng TEQ/kg feed (wet weight) for the lowest observable adverse effect level (LOAEL). TRVs based on tissue residue concentrations ranged from 50.2 to 77.8 ng TEQ/kg liver (wet weight) for the no observable adverse effect concentration (NOAEC) and the value was 189 ng TEQ/kg liver (wet weight) for the lowest observable adverse effect concentration (LOAEC). Selection of a TRV should be based on studies of compounds that are most similar to those at a site of interest. In particular, it was determined that the effects of PCDFs could not be accurately predicted from the use of TEQ-based TRVs developed from studies of PCDDs or PCBs. Risk assessors should be aware that exceedance of these TRVs would not necessarily be expected to lead to ecologically relevant adverse effects because of the inherently conservative assumptions made in the TRV derivation process.

The effects of 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 126) on mink (Mustela vison) reproduction and kit survivability and growth

This study was conducted to determine if dietary exposure to 3,3'4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 126) would have an adverse effect on the reproductive performance of female mink (Mustela vison) and survivability and growth of their kits. Standard dark, female mink were fed diets containing PCB 126 at concentrations of 0, 0.24, 2.4, and 24 microg PCB 126/kg feed (0, 24, 240 and 2,400 ng 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin [TCDD] toxic equivalents [TEQs]/kg, respectively) from 21 days prior to breeding until weaning of their kits at six weeks of age. There were no significant differences in the number of females that whelped or the average litter size between the control group and the 0.24 microg PCB 126/kg feed group. In addition, kit body weights at birth and at three, six and 28 weeks of age as well as kit survivability through weaning were similar between the two groups. In contrast, female mink fed diets containing 2.4 and 24 microg PCB 126/kg feed that had confirmed matings, failed to whelp. Histological examination of their uterine horns verified fetal implantation sites or placental scars, which indicated partial fetal development. Based on the impaired reproductive performance reported in this study, a no observable adverse effect level (NOAEL) of 0.24 microg PCB 126/kg feed (24 ng TEQs/kg) and a lowest observable adverse effect level (LOAEL) of 2.4 microg PCB 126/kg feed (240 ng TEQs /kg) were determined.

Snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) as bioindicators in Canadian areas of concern in the Great Lakes Basin. 1. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, polychlorinated biphenyls, and organochlorine pesticides in eggs

We examined the concentrations and spatial patterns of congeners of PBDEs, PCBs, and organochlorine pesticides in snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) eggs from Areas of Concern (AOCs) on the Canadian shores of Lake Ontario, St. Lawrence River, and connecting channels. Eggs from Lyons Creek (Niagara River AOC) reflected a local PCB source over a range of 7.5 km (3.2-10.8) from the Welland Canal. PCB contamination in eggs declined with increasing distance from the Welland Canal, whereas the relative contribution of congeners associated with Aroclor 1248/1254 increased with sigma PCB concentrations. Compared to turtle eggs from other sites in Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, eggs from Lyons Creek and Snye Marsh had PCB congener patterns that reflected a strong contribution from Aroclor 1254. PCBs in the eggs were associated with industrial sources and reflected the composition of different Aroclor technical mixtures. Organochlorine pesticides in eggs tended to be highest at Hamilton Harbour and Bay of Quinte AOCs, and were dominated by DDE, sigma chlordane, and mirex. In contrast, PBDE congener patterns in turtle eggs resembled PentaBDE technical formulations regardless of absolute concentrations or location, and were largely associated with urban environments.

Mink as a sentinel species in environmental health

The concept of "sentinel species" is important in the environmental health sciences because sentinel species can provide integrated and relevant information on the types, amounts, availability, and effects of environmental contaminants. Here we discuss the use of mink (Mustela vison) as a sentinel organism by reviewing the pertinent literature from exposure- and effects-based studies. The review focuses on mercury (Hg) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), as they are persistent, ubiquitous, and bioaccumulative contaminants of concern to both humans and wildlife. Mink are widely distributed, abundant, and regularly trapped in temperate, aquatic ecosystems, and this makes them an excellent model to address issues in environmental pollution on both temporal and spatial scales. As a high-trophic-level, piscivorous mammal, mink can bioaccumulate appreciable concentrations of certain pollutants and have been shown to be sensitive to their toxic effects. The husbandry and life history of mink are well understood, and this has permitted controlled dosing experiments to be conducted using animals reared in captivity. These manipulative studies have yielded important quantitative information on exposure-response relationships and benchmarks of adverse health effects, and have also allowed the cellular mechanisms underlying toxic effects to be explored. Furthermore, the data accrued from the laboratory continue to validate observations made in the field. Research derived from mink can bridge and integrate multiple disciplines, and the information collected from this species has allowed environmental health scientists to better understand and characterize pollution effects on ecosystems.

Assessment of effects in mink caused by consumption of carp collected from the Saginaw River, Michigan, USA

Polychlorinated hydrocarbons, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), are ubiquitous environmental contaminants that bioconcentrate in the food chain. Numerous studies have demonstrated mink (Mustela vison) to be one of the most sensitive species to this group of compounds. In recent studies, a lesion characterized by osteoinvasion of epithelial cells into the mandible and maxilla of young mink fed diets containing 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 126) and 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) was observed. The objective of the present study was to determine if proliferation of maxillary and mandibular squamous epithelia could be induced in ranch mink exposed to environmentally-derived polychlorinated hydrocarbons (PCBs, PCDDs, and PCDFs) in utero, during lactation, and throughout the growth period. Adult female mink were fed diets containing 0, 10, 20, or 30% carp (Cyprinus carpio) collected from the Saginaw River, Bay City, Michigan, USA, that provided 0.03, 0.83, 1.1, and 1.7 mg total PCBs (tPCBs)/kg feed and 2.5, 28, 47, and 73 ng TCDD toxic equivalents (TEQs)/kg feed, respectively, three weeks prior to breeding through weaning of the resulting offspring. Mink kits were maintained on their respective diets for up to 27 weeks of age. At 6 and 27 weeks of age, six to eight mink in each treatment group were necropsied and their jaws examined for evidence of maxillary and mandibular squamous epithelial proliferation. Results indicated that inclusion of up to 30% carp in the diet (1.7 mg tPCBs/kg feed, 73 ng TEQs/kg feed) had no effect on mink reproduction and kit survivability. However, maxillary and mandibular squamous epithelial proliferation was evident in four of the seven 27-week-old juveniles in the 20% carp group (1.1 mg tPCBs/kg feed, 47 ng TEQs/kg feed) and six of the eight juveniles in the 30% carp group (1.7 mg tPCBs/kg feed group, 73 ng TEQs/kg feed). Hepatic concentrations of tPCBs and TEQs increased in both the 6-week-old kits and the 27-week-old juveniles as the percentage of dietary carp increased. The livers of 6-week-old kits were also assessed for the presence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers, which increased as the percentage of Saginaw River carp in the diet increased.
