Abstract
OBJECTIVES Skeletal fluorosis is a metabolic bone disease caused by excessive exposure to fluoride, predominantly through contamination of drinking water. This study aimed to identify all cases of skeletal fluorosis in Tindigani village situated in Northern Tanzania. This was done following changes in drinking water sources after a previous prevalence study in 2009 in this population. METHODS In a door-to-door cross-sectional study of Tindigani village, a sample of residents was assessed for skeletal fluorosis and dental fluorosis. Diagnosis of skeletal fluorosis was based on pre-defined angles of deformity of the lower limbs. Dental fluorosis was diagnosed and graded using the Thylstrup and Fejerskov Index. Samples from current drinking water sources underwent fluoride analysis. RESULTS Tindigani village had a population of 1,944 individuals. Of the 1,532 individuals who were screened, 45 had skeletal fluorosis, giving a prevalence of 3.3% (95% CI=2.4, 4.3). Dental fluorosis was present in 82.5% of those examined (95% CI=79.8, 85.3). Dental fluorosis was present in all individuals with skeletal fluorosis and at higher grades than in the rest of the population. Drinking water samples were collected from 28 sources. These included piped, surface, well, and borehole water sources. Fluoride concentrations ranged from 0.45-38.59 mg/L of fluoride. CONCLUSIONS Skeletal fluorosis is an ongoing but preventable health problem in the current population. The delivery of sustainable low fluoride piped water to this community would be of clear health benefit. This has been addressed at a local level.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on the relation between fluoride exposure and skeletal fluorosis (SF) using a novel statistical methodology for dose-response modeling. RECENT FINDINGS Skeletal fluorosis, a major health issue that is endemic in some regions, affects millions of people worldwide. However, data regarding the dose-response relation between fluoride exposure and SF are limited and outdated. We included twenty-three studies in the meta-analysis. When comparing the highest versus the lowest fluoride category, the summary risk ratio (RR) for SF prevalence was 2.05 (95% CI 1.60; 2.64), with a value of 2.73 (95% CI 1.92; 3.90) for drinking water and 1.40 (95% CI 0.90; 2.17) for urinary fluoride. The RR by the risk of bias (RoB) was 2.37 (95% CI 1.56; 3.58) and 1.78 (95% CI 1.34; 2.36) for moderate and high RoB studies, respectively. The dose-response curve based on a one-stage cubic spline regression model showed an almost linear positive relation between exposure and SF occurrence starting from relatively low concentrations up to 5 mg/L and 2.5 mg/L, respectively, for water and urinary fluoride, with no substantial increase above this threshold. The RR for developing moderate-severe forms increases at 5.00 mg/L and 2.5 mg/L of water and urinary fluoride, respectively. Better-quality studies are needed to confirm these results, but greater attention should be given to water fluoride levels to prevent SF, in addition to the other potential adverse effects of fluoride exposure.

Abstract
Coronary plaque stability is a key pathological mechanism of coronary heart disease (CHD). Inflammation is recognized as a key factor of coronary plaque stability. The dietary inflammatory index (DII) is calculated from 21 dietary nutrients to predict the inflammation potential of an individual's diet. We hypothesized that high DII may be associated with decreased coronary plaque stability in CHD patients; therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the association between DII and plaque stability in patients with CHD. This cross-sectional study included 314 patients with CHD. DII was calculated based on food frequency questionnaires. Plaque stability was measured with optical coherence tomography. The DII ranged from -1.41 to 3.04. After adjusting for confounding factors, higher DII scores were associated with unstable plaque characteristics including thin-capped fibroatheroma (odds ratio [OR], 3.60; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.78-7.29), macrophage infiltration (OR, 2.16; 95% CI, 1.01-4.61), and plaque rupture (OR, 3.55; 95% CI, 1.73-7.29). Mediation analyses revealed that DII was important mediator of the relationship between plaque stability and food intake including soybeans and nuts, fish and shrimp, eggs (P < .05). The present study confirmed that higher DII is significantly associated with decreased plaque stability in CHD patients, suggesting an important protective role of anti-inflammatory diets in the pathogenesis of CHD.

Abstract
Nowadays, fluorosis is the most prevalent endemic disease in Tibet and one of the most concerned public health problems in China; urinary fluoride is a common diagnostic indicator of endemic fluorosis. However, the spatial distribution and influencing factors of urinary fluoride content in Tibet remain unclear. This study aims to bridge this gap by geographically weighted regression (GWR), analyses of variance (ANOVAs), Geodetector, and stepwise multiple linear regression (MLR). To achieve this goal, this study first investigated fluoride levels in the fasting urine among 637 Tibetan residents from 73 counties in Tibet, the urinary fluoride level was chosen as an indicator of fluorosis, which can reflect the health impairment. Then we identified the potential factors that could influence the spatial distribution and individual variation of urinary fluoride levels from physical environmental and socioeconomic perspective, respectively. The results showed that urinary fluoride levels in Tibet were slightly exceeding the average value for adult urinary fluoride in China, and that residents with high urinary fluoride were mainly found in the west and east; those with low urinary fluoride were mainly found in the central-southern regions. And the urinary fluoride levels had a significantly positive correlation with water fluoride and a significantly negative correlation with average annual temperature. Urinary fluoride levels increased until age 60 and followed an inverted "U"-shaped trajectory according to annual household income (80,000 renminbi (RMB) was the inflection point); pastoralists had greater exposure to fluoride than farmers. Furthermore, the Geodetector and MLR showed that the urinary fluoride level was influenced by both physical environmental and socioeconomic factors. The socioeconomic factors such as age, annual household income and occupation had a greater impact than the physical environment on urinary fluoride concentration. These findings can provide scientific basis for preventing and controlling endemic fluorosis in the Tibetan Plateau and adjacent areas.

Abstract
Brick tea-type fluorosis (BTF) due to a high intake of brick tea is possible in Tibetan populations, and dental fluorosis (DF) and skeletal fluorosis (SF) are its primary manifestations. To determine the prevalence of DF and SF and their relationships with brick tea intake in Tibetan populations, a literature review was conducted for studies published between 1994 and 2021. The available evidence revealed that brick tea may be produced from older stems and leaves of the tea plant and that the fluoride content of brick tea exceeds the national standard. The harsh environment of the plateau has led to limited food sources for the local Tibetan people who form the habit of drinking tea leaves as a satiation solution to digest greasy food and replenish vitamins, and regular consumption of brick tea leads to excessive exposure of Tibetan residents to fluoride. Studies in Tibet showed that the prevalence of DF in children was 14.06-75.93% in different districts, and the overall pooled prevalence of DF was 26.08%. The prevalence of SF in adults was 19.90-74.77% in different Tibetan districts, and the overall pooled prevalence of SF was 33.84%. The analysis of risk factors showed that the prevalence of BTF may be related to high-altitude and different working and living conditions, and BTF in children may be associated with fluoride intake during mothers' pregnancy and lactation. With the development of bioinformatics research, gene polymorphisms were suspected to be related to susceptibility to fluorosis in Tibetan populations. The study of BTF in Tibetan people needs to be further investigated and standardized, and additional studies evaluating the pathogenesis and preventive measures of BTF are warranted.

Abstract
Background Oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathogenesis of endemic fluorosis. We analyzed associations between oxidative stress-related gene polymorphisms (PON1 rs662, CAT rs769217, rs2300182, and SOD2 rs11968525) and skeletal fluorosis, and examined potential gene–environment interactions with dietary vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and selenium intake. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Zhijin County, Guizhou Province of China. Skeletal fluorosis was identified according to the Chinese Diagnostic Criteria of Endemic Skeletal Fluorosis. Dietary information was assessed through face-to-face interviews by trained interviewers using a 75-item food frequency questionnaire. The genotype was detected by high throughput TaqMan-MGB RT-PCR technology. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs were calculated using an unconditional logistic regression model. Results Intake of vitamin E, zinc, and selenium was found to be inversely associated with the risk of skeletal fluorosis. The multivariable-adjusted ORs were 0.438 (95% CI: 0.268 to 0.715, P-trend < 0.001) for vitamin E, 0.490 (95% CI: 0.298 to 0.805, P-trend = 0.001) for zinc, and 0.532 (95% CI: 0.324 to 0.873, P-trend = 0.010) for selenium when comparing the highest with the lowest quartile. The relationship for vitamin C was not observed after adjustment for risk factors. Furthermore, participants with PON1 rs662 AA genotype had a significantly decreased risk of skeletal fluorosis compared with those with the GG genotype (OR = 0.438, 95% CI: 0.231 to 0.830). GG + AG genotype carriers were 2.212 times more likely to have skeletal fluorosis than AA carriers (OR = 2.212, 95% CI: 1.197 to 4.090). Compared with AA carriers, AG carriers had a 2.182 times higher risk of skeletal fluorosis (OR = 2.182, 95% CI: 1.143 to 4.163). Although we observed the risk of skeletal fluorosis was higher with a lower intake of antioxidant nutrients, the potential interactions between nutrient intake and genetic polymorphisms were not observed. Conclusion Participants with a higher intake of vitamin E, zinc, and selenium have a lower likelihood of skeletal fluorosis. In addition, the PON1 rs662 polymorphism is related to skeletal fluorosis.

Abstract
Intestinal nutrition has a close association with the onset and development of fluorosis. Intestinal microbes play a major role in intestinal nutrition. However, the effect of fluoride on intestinal microbes is still not fully understood. This study aimed to evaluate the dose-response of fluoride on fecal microbes as well as the link between fluorosis and fecal microbes. The results showed that fluoride did not significantly alter the diversity of fecal microbiota, but richness estimators (ACE and Chao) increased first, and then decreased with the increase of water fluoride. At the genus level, 150 mg/L fluoride significantly reduced the abundances of Roseburia and Clostridium sensu stricto, and 100 mg/L and 150 mg/L fluoride obviously increased the abundances of Unclassified Ruminococcaceaes and Unclassified Bdellovibrionales, respectively. The correlation analysis showed fluoride exposure had a negative association with Roseburia and Turicibacter and was positively associated with Pelagibacterium, Unclassified Ruminococcaceae, and Unclassified Bdellovibrionales. Dental fluorosis was negatively associated with Clostridium sensu stricto, Roseburia, Turicibacter, and Paenalcaligenes and had a positive association with Pelagibacterium, Unclassified Ruminococcaceae, and Unclassified Bdellovibrionales. In conclusion, this study firstly reports fluoride in drinking water has a remarkable biphasic effect on fecal microbiota in rats, and some bacteria are significantly associated with fluoride exposure and dental fluorosis. These results indicate the gut microbiota may play an important role in fluorosis, and some bacteria are likely to be developed as biomarkers for fluorosis.

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the associations between dietary one-carbon metabolism-related nutrients (betaine, choline, methionine, folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12) and fluorosis among the Chinese population in an area known for coal-burning fluorosis. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, with 653 fluorosis patients and 241 non-fluorosis participants. Dietary intake was acquired using a validated semi-quantitative 75-item food frequency questionnaire. The risk associations were assessed by unconditional logistical regression. Results: We observed a significant inverse association between dietary betaine, total choline, methionine, folate, vitamin B6, and choline species and fluorosis. The adjusted OR (95% CI) in the highest quartile of consumption compared with the lowest were 0.59 (0.37-0.94) (P-trend = 0.010) for betaine intake, 0.45 (0.28-0.73) (P-trend = 0.001) for total choline intake, 0.45 (0.28-0.72) (P-trend < 0.001) for methionine intake, 0.39 (0.24-0.63) (P-trend < 0.001) for folate intake, 0.38 (0.24-0.62) (P-trend < 0.001) for vitamin B6 intake, and 0.46 (0.28-0.75) (P-trend = 0.001) for total choline plus betaine intake. Dietary intakes of choline-containing compounds, phosphatidylcholine, free choline, glycerophosphocholine, and phosphocholine were also inversely associated with lower fluorosis (all P-trend < 0.05). No significant associations were observed between dietary vitamin B12 or sphingomyelin and fluorosis. Conclusion: The present study suggested that the higher dietary intakes of specific one-carbon metabolism-related nutrients, such as betaine, choline, methionine, folate, and vitamin B6, are associated with lower fluorosis prevalence.

Abstract
This study aimed to carry out a systematic review of meta-analysis and risk assessment of the global pooled concentration of fluoride and identify the influencing factors of fluoride loads in groundwater. The study extracted data from 36 most prevalent regions of 20 countries in the world through various search engines using keywords as well as Boolean operators and follows the PRISMA statement in every phase of literature searching. The study illustrated the pooled concentration of fluoride in the selected 20 countries was 2.1267 mg/L (1.650, 2.604) at 95% confidence interval, which was higher than the WHO standards limit of 1.5 mg/L. The results of the meta-analysis suggested that pH, Na, HCO3 and rainfall was significantly positively correlated (r = ~0.4; p ˂ 0.05) to fluoride and has a weak correction with the other parameters such as local temperature, altitude, water depth, EC, Ca, and Mg (r = -0.064 to +0.214; p ˂ 0.05). Concerning, the risk assessment through oral and dermal route exposure revealed that the consumers in most of the regions were at considerable risk, and the children were more vulnerable than the adults (THQ > 1). The study findings would help to take measures for safe water supply in the affected areas. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The calculated pooled concentration of fluoride was 2.1267 mg/L (1.650, 2.604) at 95% CI in groundwater of the study areas. Climatic conditions and lithological composition are the key controlling factors for groundwater fluoride contamination. Semi-arid and arid regions are significantly affected by fluoride rather than humid areas. Regarding fluorosis in selected regions, children (78%) are more vulnerable than adults (23%).

Abstract
Red mud contains high levels of fluorine compounds. Once these fluorides were released, which led to adverse effects on human health and environment. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible use-electrokinetic remediation (EKR) for the removal of fluorine from red mud and explore the effects of different electrolytes on the remediation process. Three runs of EKR experiments were chosen using distilled water (run A), 0.1 mol/L HCl (run B) and 0.1 mol/L NaOH (run C), respectively. Related parameters for EKR, such as electric current, electro-osmotic flow (EOF) and energy consumption, were analysed. Characterisations of red mud were studied by SEM, XRD and FTIR. Experimental results showed that EKR could effectively remove fluorine pollutants from red mud. Electrolyte can obviously affect fluorine removal in EKR. The removal efficiency of run A, B and C was 57.69%, 66.75%, 60.04%, respectively, and run B (adding 0.1 mol HCl) had the best removal efficiency and the lowest residual fluorine in treated red mud after EKR, because of the highest electric current and EOF in all runs. Energy consumption per kilogram dry red mud of run A, B and C was 0.370, 0.726, and 0.506 kWh/kg, respectively. Experimental results showed that electro-osmosis and electromigration were both important removal mechanisms in EKR of fluorine from red mud. After EKR, the proportion of RESF (the residual fraction of fluorine) increased significantly, now fluorine of treated red mud had a good chemical inertness and had a smaller influence on environment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Dietary intakes play important roles in the prevention and treatment of coronary heart disease (CHD). Coronary plaque vulnerability is the key mechanism leading to CHD progression. We aimed to explore the association between dietary intakes and plaque vulnerability via optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 314 CHD patients were included in this study. Dietary intake status was assessed by semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and plaque vulnerability was measured by OCT. The results showed that vegetables were negatively associated with macrophage infiltration, thin cap fibroatheroma (TCFA) and thrombus [odds ratio (OR) = 0.48, 0.38, 0.38, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) = 0.24-0.93, 0.17-0.84, 0.15-0.94, all P < 0.05]; fruits were negatively associated with lipid plaque, TCFA, rupture and thrombus (OR = 0.17, 0.11, 0.12, 0.20, 95% CI = 0.07-0.39, 0.04-0.29, 0.05-0.28, 0.08-0.55, all P < 0.05); salt was positively associated with lipid plaque and TCFA (OR = 2.59, 2.83, 95% CI = 1.14-5.90, 1.23-6.51, all P < 0.05). Regarding nutrients intakes, dietary fiber was negatively associated with macrophage infiltration (OR = 0.34, 95% CI = 0.14-0.85, P = 0.021); folate was negatively associated with lipid plaque, TCFA and rupture (OR = 0.22, 0.16, 0.20, 95% CI = 0.09-0.58, 0.06-0.41, 0.08-0.51, all P < 0.05); vitamin C was negatively associated with TCFA, rupture and thrombus (OR = 0.26, 0.22, 0.05, 95% CI = 0.07-0.95, 0.07-0.65, 0.01-0.25, all P < 0.05); sodium was positively associated with lipid plaque, TCFA, rupture and thrombus (OR = 3.43, 3.96, 2.73, 4.84, 95% CI = 1.51-7.80, 1.66-9.45, 1.18-6.27, 1.76-9.28, all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Salt and sodium were dietary risk factors for plaque vulnerability, whereas vegetables, fruits, dietary fiber, folate and vitamin C were dietary protective factors for plaque vulnerability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Type D personality is a psychosocial risk factor for cardiovascular events and in-stent restenosis (ISR), but the mechanisms involved are not well understood. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary patterns on the association between Type D personality and ISR in patients with coronary artery disease treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS This cross-sectional study comprised a total of 230 post-PCI patients who were assessed for Type D personality, depression, dietary patterns, physical activity and medication adherence via self-administered questionnaires. ISR was assessed by coronary angiography. RESULTS Type D personality (odds ratio [OR], 3.35; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05-10.71, p=0.042), low fruit intake (OR, 0.30; 95% CI, 0.12-0.68, p=0.008) and low vegetable intake (OR, 0.48, 95% CI, 0.27-0.91, p=0.021) were independent risk factors for ISR after adjustment for psychosocial, lifestyle and cardiovascular risk factors. Mediation analyses revealed that Type D personality had a significant direct effect on the development of ISR (p<0.05). In addition, nutrients in fruits and vegetables, including vitamin C, vitamin E and fiber, were important mediators of the relationship between Type D personality and ISR (p<0.05), the percentage of total indirect effect was 24.65%. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggested that the low intake of fruit and vegetables in Type D patients can predict ISR. The healthy dietary interventions to supply vitamin C, vitamin E and fiber may help to improve the prognosis in post-PCI patients with Type D personality.

Abstract
Fluoride is an essential trace element for humans, and its deficiency or excess in the environment could lead to disease. To investigate the spatial distribution and health risk assessment of fluoride (F-) in drinking water, 302 tap water samples from Chongqing urban areas, China, were collected to analyze F- using an ion chromatograph. The results showed that (1) F- concentration in drinking water ranged from 0.100 to 0.503 mg/L, with an average of 0.238 ± 0.045 mg/L. (2) The spatial autocorrelation analysis showed that high-low clusters were mostly located in Dadukou District and Beibei District, while low-low clusters were mainly in southern Banan District. (3) The fluoride average daily doses of children, teens and adults were 0.030, 0.029 and 0.031 mg/(kg day). (4) Hazard quotients of excessive fluoride (HQe) of children, teens and adults were 0.51 ± 09, 0.49 ± 0.09 and 0.52 ± 0.10, respectively (inferior to 1.00), whereas hazard quotients of inadequate fluoride (HQi) of those groups were 1.21 ± 0.26, 1.23 ± 0.26 and 1.15 ± 0.25, respectively (superior to 1.00). Therefore, average daily fluoride intake of residents with drinking water was inadequate. This could pose dental caries and osteoporosis threats for residents from Chongqing urban areas.

Abstract
Objective: Many studies have explored the effects of individual foods or nutrients on fluorosis, but no studies have focused on dietary patterns. This study examined the relationship between dietary patterns and coal-burning fluorosis in Guizhou, China. Methods: This 1:1 matched case-control study was conducted in Zhijin County of Guizhou province with a sample size of 200 cases of fluorosis and 200 age and gender matched controls. Habitual dietary intake was assessed by face-to-face interviews, using a validated 75-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and various covariates using structured questionnaires. The dietary patterns were identified by factor analysis. Results: The factor analysis identified three major dietary patterns which were labeled healthy, easy-to-roast and high protein. After adjusting for various confounding factors, a decreased risk for fluorosis was observed in the highest tertile of the healthy dietary pattern relative to the lowest tertile (OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.27–0.84, P-trend = 0.003) and a positive association was observed between the easy-to-roast dietary pattern and fluorosis risk (OR = 2.05, 95% CI = 1.15–3.66), with a significant linear trend (P = 0.017). We did not find an association between fluorosis risk and the high protein dietary pattern. The relationships remained significant when the analyses were stratified by gender and fluorosis subtypes. Conclusion: The healthy dietary pattern may lower coal-burning fluorosis risk; in contrast, the easy-to-roast dietary pattern significantly increases the risk of coal-burning fluorosis.

Abstract
The fluoride contamination in water is still a live discussion among the scientific community, because of its beneficial and injurious health effects inflicted on the human population. The magnitude of groundwater fluoride contamination is aggravated by increasing anthropogenic activities. Groundwater is supposedly the main source through which people are highly exposed to fluoride, compared with other sources of exposure. Among human populations, fluoride-related health issues span from mild effects on teeth and bones to severe kidney problems, neurotoxicity, and even cancer. Nowadays, fluoride toxicity is gaining much attention in the endemic areas due to its adverse impact on the children's cognitive function, since children are more susceptible to fluoride toxicity as compared to adults. The primary mechanism behind the neurotoxicity of fluoride is still not clearly understood. However, knowingly, fluoride disrupts the biochemical mechanism and thus alters the normal functioning of the brain. Several human studies are suggestive of lowering children's IQ who was exposed to fluoride during their childhood. The conclusive findings of past research suggest that the fluoride concentration in potable water tends to grossly affect the children's IQ level. However, the body of proof is limited, because most of the studies are concentrated in few countries, and have their own limitations and data gaps. The grave implications of fluoride toxicity, therefore, demand extensive and properly designed research to bridging the data gap in developing countries. Furthermore, spanning research work across all the endemic areas of the world could generate larger database, helping resolve the issue on a large scale.

Abstract
Fluoride intake from tap water supplied by fluoride-containing groundwater has been the primary cause of fluorosis among the residents of Buak Khang Subdistrict, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. To reduce fluoride intake, bottled water treated using reverse-osmosis membranes has been made available by community-owned water treatment plants. This study aimed to assess the resultant reduction in fluoride intake from using bottled water for drinking and cooking. Water consumption surveys were conducted by providing bottled water to 183 individuals from 35 randomly selected households and recording the amount of water consumed for drinking and cooking. The mean drinking water consumption was 1.62-1.88 L/capita/day and the cooking water consumption on weekends (5.06 ± 3.04 L/household/day) was higher than that on weekdays (3.80 ± 1.90 L/household/day). The per capita drinking water consumption exhibited a positive correlation with body weight; however, the low-weight subjects consumed more drinking water per kilogram of body weight than the heavy subjects. Although sex and day of the week did not significantly affect drinking water consumption per capita, girls consumed less water in school possibly due to their group mentality. Drinking water consumption per kilogram of body weight was significantly higher among women, children, and the elderly because these groups generally have low body weights. The fluoride intake from using tap water for drinking and cooking was estimated to be 0.18 ± 0.10 mg/kg-body weight/day and 5.55 ± 3.52 mg/capita/day, respectively, whereas using bottled water for drinking and cooking reduced the fluoride intake to 0.002 ± 0.002 mg/kg-body weight/day and 0.07 ± 0.05 mg/capita/day, respectively. Despite the increased cost, 98% and 90% of the subjects selected bottled water over tap water for drinking and cooking, respectively; thus, bottled water delivery services could be used to mitigate fluoride intake in developing countries.

Abstract
The effect of duration of chronic treatment with fluoride (F, 50 mg/L as NaF) on the lipid profile, lipid droplets and triglycerides (TG) in liver was evaluated in mice with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) previously induced by hyperlipidic diet and in animals fed normocaloric diet. In addition, the effect of F administered for a short period (20 days) was evaluated on de novo lipogenesis, by nuclear magnetic resonance. GRP78, Apo-E, and sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP) were quantified by Western blotting. Our data indicate that F interferes in lipid metabolism and lipid droplets, having a different action depending on the exposure time and type of diet administered. F improved lipid parameters and reduced steatosis only when administered for a short period of time (up to 20 days) to animals fed normocaloric diet. However, when NAFLD was already installed, lipid parameters were only slightly improved at 20 days of treatment, but no effect was observed on the degree of steatosis. In addition, lipid profile was in general impaired when the animals were treated with F for 30 days, regardless of the diet. Moreover, F did not alter de novo lipogenesis in animals with installed NAFLD. Furthermore, hyperlipidic diet increased F accumulation in the body. GRP78 increased, while Apo-E and SREBP decreased in the F-treated groups. Our results provide new insights on how F affects lipid metabolism depending on the available energy source.

Abstract
The decision whether to fluoridate drinking water continues to be controversial in some communities. Dental and skeletal fluorosis in response to chronic fluoride overexposure are cited as reasons to avoid community water fluoridation in spite of evidence of the oral and skeletal health benefits fluoridation confers. Community fluoridation of ~ 1 mg/L fluoride has not been found to be associated with primary bone cancer but is associated with improved bone strength. No studies have examined fluoride exposure and secondary bone cancer, a common metastasis with significant morbidity. We hypothesize that fluoridation could diminish the likelihood of secondary bone cancer due to its role in bone fortification. We examined the association between community water fluoridation category and prevalence of secondary bone cancer from 2008 to 2010 among cancer patients of 18 years of age or older in counties in New York State. Relative to counties with less than 25% of the water supply fluoridated, we report no association between secondary bone cancer among cancer patients in counties with 25-75% of the water supply fluoridated (β = 0.02, p = 0.96) and among those in counties with > 75% fluoridated (β = 0.02, p = 0.97). We found no evidence of an association between community water fluoridation category and secondary bone cancer from 2008 to 2010 at the county level in New York State.

Abstract
Spent potlining (SPL) hazardous waste is a potentially valuable source of fluoride, which may be recovered through chemical leaching and adsorption with a selective sorbent. For this purpose, the commercially available chelating resin Purolite® S950+ was loaded with lanthanum ions, to create a novel ligand-exchange sorbent. The equilibrium fluoride uptake behaviour of the resin was thoroughly investigated, using NaF solution and a simulant leachate of SPL waste. The resin exhibited a large maximum defluoridation capacity of 187 ± 15 mg g-1 from NaF solution and 126 ± 10 mg g-1 from the leachate, with solution pH being strongly influential to uptake performance. Isotherm and spectral data indicated that both chemisorption and unexpected physisorption processes were involved in the fluoride extraction and suggested that the major uptake mechanism differed in each matrix. The resin demonstrates significant potential in the recovery of fluoride from aqueous waste-streams.

Abstract
In this work, the potential of a novel hydroxyapatite decorated with carbon nanotube composite (CNT-HAP) for fluoride removal was investigated. The synthesized CNT-HAP composite was systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller(BET). Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the defluorination capacity of CNT-HAP. The CNT-HAP composite has a maximum adsorption capacity of 11.05 mg·g−1 for fluoride, and the isothermal adsorption data were fitted by the Freundlich model to calculate the thermodynamic parameters. Thermodynamic analysis implies that the adsorption of fluoride on CNT-HAP is a spontaneous process. Furthermore, the adsorption of fluoride follows pseudo-second-order model. The effects of solution pH, co-existing anions and reaction temperature on defluorination efficiency were examined to optimize the operation conditions for fluoride adsorption. It is found that the optimized pH-value for fluoride removal by CNT-HAP composite is 6. In addition, among five common anions studied in this work, the presence of HCO3- and PO43- could considerably affect the fluoride removal by CNT-HPA in aqueous media. Finally, the underlying mechanism for the fluoride removal by CNT-HAP is analyzed, and an anion exchange process is proposed.

Abstract
Excessive fluoride in natural water ecosystem has been demonstrated to have adverse effects on reproductive system in humans and mammals, while the most vulnerable aquatic organisms were ignored. In this study, the effects of waterborne fluoride on growth performance, sex steroid hormone, histological structure, and the transcriptional profiles of sex steroid related genes were examined in both female and male zebrafish exposed to different concentrations of 0.79, 18.60, 36.83 mg L(-1) of fluoride for 30 and 60 d to investigate the effects of fluoride on reproductive system and the underlying toxic mechanisms caused by fluoride. The results showed that the body weight was remarkably decreased, the structure of ovary and testis were serious injured, and the T and E2 levels were significantly reduced in male zebrafish. The transcriptional profiles of steroidogenic related genes displayed phenomenal alterations, the expressions of pgr and cyp19a1a were significantly up-regulated, while the transcriptional levels of er, ar and hsd3β were decreased both in the ovary and testis, and hsd17β8 were down-regulated just in males. Taken together, these results demonstrated that fluoride could significantly inhibit the growth of zebrafish, and notably affect the reproductive system in both sex zebrafish by impairing the structure of ovary and testis, altering steroid hormone levels and steroidogenic genes expression related to the synthesis of sex hormones in zebrafish.
