Abstract
Inks based on soybean protein isolate (SPI) were developed and their formulations were optimized as a function of the ink heat treatment and the content of other biopolymers to assess the effects of protein-polysaccharides and protein-protein interactions. First, the rheological behavior of the inks was analyzed in relation to the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) concentration employed (20, 25, and 30 wt%) and, as a result of the analysis, the ink with 25 wt% PVA was selected. Additionally, sodium alginate (SA) and gelatin (GEL) were added to the formulations to improve the viscoelastic properties of the inks and the effect of the SA or GEL concentrations (1, 2, and 3 wt%) was studied. All inks showed shear thinning behavior and self-supporting abilities. Among all the 3D printed scaffolds, those with higher SA (3 wt%) or GEL (2 and 3 wt%) content showed higher shape fidelity and were selected for further characterization. Texture profile analysis demonstrated that the scaffolds prepared with previously heat-treated inks containing 3 wt% GEL showed the highest strength. Additionally, these scaffolds showed a higher water-uptake capacity profile.

Abstract
A method is presented herein for the design of wood bio-adhesives using sewage sludge extracts (SSE). SSE was extracted from SS using deep eutectic solvents and processed with glycerol triglycidyl ether (GTE) to disrupt the secondary structure of proteins. An additive was also used to improve mechanical performance. The resulting bio-adhesive (SSE/GTE@TA) had a wet shear strength of 0.93 MPa, meeting the Chinese national standard GB/T 9846-2015 (≥0.7 MPa). However, the high polysaccharide content in SSE would weaken the mechanical properties of wood bio-adhesives. The key to improve bio-adhesive quality was the formation of a strong chemical bond via Maillard reaction as well as higher temperatures (140 °C) to reduce polysaccharide content via dehydration. This approach has lower environmental impact and higher economic efficiency compared to incineration and anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. This work provides a new perspective on the high-value utilization of SS and offers a novel approach to developing bio-adhesives for the wood industry.

Abstract
The harmful effects on the environment caused by the indiscriminate use of synthetic plastics and the inadequate management of post-consumer waste have given rise to efforts to redirect this consumption to bio-based economic models. In this sense, using biopolymers to produce materials is a reality for food packaging companies searching for technologies that allow these materials to compete with those from synthetic sources. This review paper focused on the recent trends in multilayer films with the perspective of using biopolymers and natural additives for application in food packaging. Firstly, the recent developments in the area were presented concisely. Then, the main biopolymers used (gelatin, chitosan, zein, polylactic acid) and main methods for multilayer film preparation were discussed, including the layer-by-layer, casting, compression, extrusion, and electrospinning methods. Furthermore, we highlighted the bioactive compounds and how they are inserted in the multilayer systems to form active biopolymeric food packaging. Furthermore, the advantages and drawbacks of multilayer packaging development are also discussed. Finally, the main trends and challenges in using multilayer systems are presented. Therefore, this review aims to bring updated information in an innovative approach to current research on food packaging materials, focusing on sustainable resources such as biopolymers and natural additives. In addition, it proposes viable production routes for improving the market competitiveness of biopolymer materials against synthetic materials.

Abstract
The development of new bio-based coating materials to be applied on cellulosic and plastic based substrates, with improved performances compared to currently available products and at the same time with improved sustainable end of life options, is a challenge of our times. Enabling cellulose or bioplastics with proper functional coatings, based on biopolymer and functional materials deriving from agro-food waste streams, will improve their performance, allowing them to effectively replace fossil products in the personal care, tableware and food packaging sectors. To achieve these challenging objectives some molecules can be used in wet or solid coating formulations, e.g., cutin as a hydrophobic water- and grease-repellent coating, polysaccharides such as chitosan-chitin as an antimicrobial coating, and proteins as a gas barrier. This review collects the available knowledge on functional coatings with a focus on the raw materials used and methods of dispersion/application. It considers, in addition, the correlation with the desired final properties of the applied coatings, thus discussing their potential.

Abstract
Milk has two main components that have high nutritional value—milk protein (casein and whey protein), and lactose. These components are extensively used in various areas, especially in food, i.e., as sweeteners, stabilizers, functional food ingredients, nutritional fortifiers, etc. Non-enzymatic browning refers to a series of chemical reactions between sugars and proteins that make food more appetizing. Non-enzymatic browning reactions include degradation of ascorbic acid, lipid peroxidation, caramel reaction, and the Maillard reaction (MR). The MR, as one of the four non-enzymatic browning reactions, has been well studied and utilized in food fields. Milk protein and lactose, as two main components of milk, have high chemical activities; they are used as reactants to participate in the MR, generating Maillard reaction products (MRPs). The MR involves a condensation reaction between carbonyl groups of various sugars and amino groups of amino acids/proteins. These MRPs have different applications in various areas, including food flavor, food oxidation resistance, drug carriers, etc. This work presents the positive and negative effects of the MR, based on the two main components of milk, used in food and medicine, as well as avoidance approaches to prevent the occurrence of negative effects.

Abstract
Food packaging is an area of interest not just for food producers or food marketing, but also for consumers who are more and more aware about the fact that food packaging has a great impact on food product quality and on the environment. The most used materials for the packaging of food are plastic, glass, metal, and paper. Still, over time edible films have become widely used for a variety of different products and different food categories such as meat products, vegetables, or dairy products. For example, proteins are excellent materials used for obtaining edible or non-edible coatings and films. The scope of this review is to overview the literature on protein utilization in food packages and edible packages, their functionalization, antioxidant, antimicrobial and antifungal activities, and economic perspectives. Different vegetable (corn, soy, mung bean, pea, grass pea, wild and Pasankalla quinoa, bitter vetch) and animal (whey, casein, keratin, collagen, gelatin, surimi, egg white) protein sources are discussed. Mechanical properties, thickness, moisture content, water vapor permeability, sensorial properties, and suitability for the environment also have a significant impact on protein-based packages utilization.

Abstract
Biodegradable films constructed from food ingredients are being developed for food coating and packaging applications to create more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives to plastics and other synthetic film-forming materials. In particular, there is a focus on the creation of active packaging materials from natural ingredients, especially plant-based ones. The film matrix is typically constructed from film-forming food components, such as proteins, polysaccharides and lipids. These matrices can be fortified with active ingredients, such as antioxidants and antimicrobials, so as to enhance their functional properties. Edible active films must be carefully designed to have the required optical, mechanical, barrier, and preservative properties needed for commercial applications. This review focuses on the fabrication, properties, and functional performance of edible films constructed from natural active ingredients. It provides an overview of the type of active ingredients that can be used, how they interact with the film matrix, how they migrate through the films, and how they are released. It also discusses the potential application of these active films for food preservation. Finally, future trends are highlighted and areas where further research are required are discussed.

Abstract
The food industry generates a large amount of waste every year, which opens up a research field aimed at minimizing and efficiently managing this issue to support the concept of zero waste. From the extraction process of oilseeds results oil cakes. These residues are a source of bioactive compounds (protein, dietary fiber, antioxidants) with beneficial properties for health, that can be used in foods, cosmetics, textile, and pharmaceutical industries. They can also serve as substrates for the production of enzymes, antibiotics, biosurfactants, and mushrooms. Other applications are in animal feedstuff and for composites, bio-fuel, and films production. This review discusses the importance of oilseed and possible valorization methods for the residues obtained in the oil industry.

Abstract
Two exopolysaccharide (EPS)-producing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains, Liquorilactobacillus (L.) sp CUPV281 and Liquorilactobacillus (L.) mali CUPV271, were isolated from Spanish apple must. Each of the strains produced a dextran, with different branching degrees, to be incorporated into soy protein isolate (SPI) film-forming formulations. Films were prepared by compression molding, a more rapid processing method than solution casting and, thus, with a greater potential for scaling-up production. Thermal analysis showed that SPI and EPS start the degradation process at temperatures above 190 °C, confirming that the compression temperature selected (120 °C) was well below the corresponding degradation temperatures. Resulting films were transparent and homogeneous, as shown by UV-Vis spectroscopy and SEM, indicating the good compatibility between SPI and EPS. Furthermore, FTIR analysis showed that the interactions between SPI and EPS were physical interactions, probably by hydrogen bonding among the polar groups of SPI and EPS. Regarding antifungal/fungistatic activity, LAB strains used in this study showed an inhibitory effect on germination of fungal spores.

Abstract
The objective of this work was to evaluate grafted soy protein isolate (SPI) for pharmaceutical applications. The present work reports the microwave-assisted preparation of soy protein isolate\grafted[acrylic acid-co-4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)butanoic acid] [SPI-g-(AA-co-HPBA)] hydrogel via graft copolymerization using N,N-methylene-bis-acrylamide and potassium persulphate as the cross-linker and initiator, respectively. The chemical and physical properties of the synthesized polymeric hydrogels were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS), nuclear magnetic resonance 1H-NMR, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The SEM, TEM, and XRD analyses have confirmed the formation of hydrogel SPI-g-(AA-co-HPBA) with the network structure having a layered and crystalline surface. The SPI-g-(AA-co-HPBA) hydrogel was investigated for the sustained and controlled drug delivery system for the release of model drug ciprofloxacin at basic pH for its utilization against bacterial infection in oral cavity. The drug release profile for SPI-g-(AA-co-HPBA) hydrogels was studied using LCMS at the ppb level at pH = 7.4. The synthesized hydrogel was found to be noncytotoxic, polycrystalline in nature with a network structure having good porosity, increased thermal stability, and pH-responsive behavior. The hydrogel has potential to be used as the vehicle for controlled drug delivery in oral cavity bacterial infections.

Abstract
Gelatin was extracted from fish scales in this work, in an attempt to valorise abundant and available fishery by-products as an approach towards a more circular economy. With this strategy in mind, fish scale gelatin was used to prepare active films. In this regard, the development of advanced materials from gelatin involves its modification to enhance functional properties, particularly barrier properties, to achieve the requirements for specific value-added purposes, such as food or pharmaceutical/biomedical applications. The improvement of those functional properties can be achieved by means of chemical cross-linking processes. In this context, non-enzymatic reactions were carried out with the addition of fructose and ascorbic acid into gelatin film forming formulations, and cross-linking was induced by a heat-treatment. These cross-linking reactions resulted in higher barrier features, especially for those films prepared with ascorbic acid.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the effects of formulation composition on the physico-chemical and drug release properties of mucoadhesive buccal films prepared by melt extrusion technology, using a response surface methodology. METHODS Salbutamol sulphate, an antiasthmatic drug was used for this study. Klucel hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) EF (film-forming polymer), Benecel hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) K-15M (drug release retardant) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) 4500 (plasticiser) were the three independent factors utilised for the study. The responses were fitted to a full quadratic model and P-values for each of the factors were used to determine their significance on the film characteristics. KEY FINDINGS Films were successfully extruded using the corotating twin-screw extruder. The torque during extrusion was found to be significantly affected by all the three factors and no interaction between factors was observed. A significant interaction was observed between HPC and PEG 4500 for stiffness of films. For disintegration time and swelling index, a significant interaction was found between HPC and HPMC. The in vitro % drug release was directly correlated with HPMC content and not with other factors and varied from 69-89% at 4 h. CONCLUSIONS The influence of extrusion process and formulation parameters on salbutamol sulphate films was elucidated, indicating the use of melt extrusion as a feasible method for film preparation.

Abstract
Soy protein isolate (SPI) provides a potential alternative biopolymer source to fossil fuels, but improving the mechanical properties and water resistance of SPI composites remains a huge challenge. Inspired by the synergistic effect of natural nacre, we developed a novel approach to fabricate high-performance SPI nanocomposite films based on 2D graphene (G) nanosheets and 1D carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) using a casting method. The introduction of web-like NFC promoted the uniform dispersion of graphene/CNTs in the biopolymer matrix, as well as a high extent of cross-linkage combination between the fillers and SPI matrix. The laminated and cross-linked structures of the different nanocomposite films were observed by field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) images. Due to the synergistic interactions of π⁻π stacking and hydrogen bonding between the nanofillers and SPI chains, the tensile strength of SPI/G/CNT/NFC film significantly increased by 78.9% and the water vapor permeability decreased by 31.76% in comparison to neat SPI film. In addition, the ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) light barrier performance, thermal stability, and hydrophobicity of the films were significantly improved as well. This bioinspired synergistic reinforcing strategy opens a new path for constructing high-performance nanocomposites.

Abstract
In this work, the effect of hydrolyzed keratin on the properties of soy protein-based films was analyzed when different manufacture processes were employed. It is widely known that the processing method selected can affect the film properties as a function of the structure obtained during the film formation. Therefore, the assessment of hydrolyzed keratin/soy protein films processed by casting and compression moulding was carried out by means of the analysis of physicochemical, thermal, mechanical, optical and surface properties. It was observed that the incorporation of hydrolyzed keratin, obtained from a simpler, environmentally friendlier and more sustainable extraction method, resulted in the improvement of the thermal stability of the films, irrespective of the processing method employed. Moreover, the films processed by compression moulding showed enhanced tensile strength, which increased with the incorporation of hydrolyzed keratin due to the formation of disulfide bonds.
