Morphology, rheology, and physical properties of polymer-modified asphalt binders

A solvent-free processed low-temperature tolerant adhesive

Ultra-low temperature resistant adhesive is highly desired yet scarce for material adhesion for the potential usage in Arctic/Antarctic or outer space exploration. Here we develop a solvent-free processed low-temperature tolerant adhesive with excellent adhesion strength and organic solvent stability, wide tolerable temperature range (i.e. -196 to 55 °C), long-lasting adhesion effect ( > 60 days, -196 °C) that exceeds the classic commercial hot melt adhesives. Furthermore, combine experimental results with theoretical calculations, the strong interaction energy between polyoxometalate and polymer is the main factor for the low-temperature tolerant adhesive, possessing enhanced cohesion strength, suppressed polymer crystallization and volumetric contraction. Notably, manufacturing at scale can be easily achieved by the facile scale-up solvent-free processing, showing much potential towards practical application in Arctic/Antarctic or planetary exploration.

Mechanistic insight of α-mangostin encapsulation in 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin for solubility enhancement

α-Mangostin is the most abundant compound contained in the mangostin (Garcinia mangostana L.) plant which have been developed and proven to have many promising pharmacological effects. However, the low water solubility of α-mangostin causes limitations in its development in clinical purpose. To increase the solubility of a compound, a method currently being developed is to make drug inclusion complexes using cyclodextrins. This research aimed to use in silico techniques namely molecular docking study and molecular dynamics simulation to explore the molecular mechanism and stability of the encapsulation of α-mangostin using cyclodextrins. Two types of cyclodextrins were used including β-cyclodextrin and 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin docked against α-mangostin. From the molecular docking results, it shows that the α-mangostin complex with 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin provides the lowest binding energy value of -7.99 Kcal/mol compared to β-cyclodextrin value of -6.14 Kcal/mol. The α-mangostin complex with 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin also showed good stability based on molecular dynamics simulation during 100 ns. From molecular motion, RDF, Rg, SASA, density, total energy analyzes, this complex shows increased solubility in water and provided good stability. This indicates that the encapsulation of α-mangostin with 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin can increase the solubility of the α-mangostin.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Study on the Compatibility of SBR and Asphalt Base Based on Molecular Simulation

In the field of highway construction, the application of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR)-modified asphalt has gained popularity across different levels of road surfaces. A crucial aspect in ensuring the efficacy of this modification lies in the compatibility between SBR and the matrix asphalt. To address this, the current study utilizes molecular dynamics simulation as a technique. By establishing a model for the SBR-modified asphalt mixture, the research quantifies the compatibility level between the SBR modifier and the asphalt. The aim is to uncover the underlying mechanisms of compatibility between the SBR modifier and the base asphalt, ultimately contributing to the improvement of the storage stability of SBR-modified asphalt, which holds significant importance. The investigation began with the creation of models for both the base asphalt and the SBR modifier. A model for the SBR-modified asphalt blending system was then formulated based on these initial models. After undergoing geometry optimization and annealing procedures, the model attained its lowest energy state, providing a reliable basis for examining the performance of SBR-modified asphalt. The study proceeded to calculate solubility parameters and interaction energies of the system to evaluate the compatibility between the SBR modifier and the base asphalt at various temperatures. The analysis of these parameters shed light on the compatibility mechanism between the two components. Notably, it was found that at a temperature of 160 ℃, the compatibility was significantly enhanced. The findings were further corroborated through scanning electron microscope and rheological tests. The outcomes of this research offer theoretical guidance for the application of SBR-modified asphalt.

Study on Viscoelastic Properties of Various Fiber-Reinforced Asphalt Binders

This study analyzed the viscoelastic properties of asphalt binders reinforced with various fibers, such as modified asphalt binder, modified asphalt binder reinforced with lignin fibers (LFs), polyester fibers (PFs), and polypropylene fibers (PPFs), using dynamic shear rheological (DSR) testing. Then, the experiment generated data on the dynamic modulus and phase angle, which described the dynamic rheological characteristics at varying temperatures. The generalized Maxwell model was employed to select the appropriate element, and the test curve was fitted into a discrete time spectrum based on the time-temperature equivalence principle (TTSP). The master curves of the relaxation modulus and creep compliance were established to predict the relaxation and creep properties of various asphalt binders. The analysis indicated that fiber-reinforced binders offer superior resistance to high temperatures and long-term deformation, while being less sensitive to temperature and having a more significant elastic characterization. The binders reinforced with PPFs and LFs exhibited superior performance in high-temperature settings and long-term durability, respectively. On the other hand, the binder reinforced with PFs displayed exceptional high-temperature elastic properties. Additionally, based on the experimental data and corresponding discussion, it appears that the 13-element GM model is more appropriate for fitting the data.

Exploring the potential of waste plastic-modified asphalt: a systematic review of blending ratios, mixing conditions, and rheological properties

In the present study, a systematic literature review (SLR) is conducted to collect, compile, and summarize the findings of previous studies in a meaningful and systematic way. This review focuses on the ideal blending ratios, mixing parameters, and the physical, thermal, and rheological performance of waste plastic-modified asphalt. It highlights the most significant research results about the challenges like phase separation, low-temperature performance, and workability for waste plastic-modified asphalt and progress in this domain. The results point out that the use of chemical and physical additives can help in the reduction of phase separation. Furthermore, this paper debates the aging characteristics and it was seen that the integration of waste plastic in asphalt has shown to slow down the aging process of the binder. The review article put forward details of various field projects across the globe utilizing waste plastic. The review concludes by presenting key findings, identifying research gaps, and suggesting future directions to advance the knowledge and to fully comprehend the possible application of waste plastic-modified bitumen in sustainable road construction.

Investigation of Phenolic Resin-Modified Asphalt and Its Mixtures

This study comprehensively examines the influence of phenol-formaldehyde resin (PF) on the performance of base asphalt and its mixtures for road applications, emphasizing its innovative use in enhancing pavement quality. Optimal PF content was determined through the evaluation of standard indicators and rotational viscosity. In-depth analyses of PF-modified asphalt's high- and low-temperature rheological properties and viscoelastic behavior were conducted using dynamic shear rheometers and bending beam rheometers. Aging resistance was assessed through short-term aging and performance grade (PG) grading. Moreover, Marshall and water stability tests were performed on PF-modified asphalt mixtures. Findings indicate that the uniform dispersion of PF particles effectively inhibits asphalt flow at high temperatures, impedes oxygen penetration, and delays the transition from elasticity to viscosity. These unique properties enhance the high-temperature stability, rutting resistance, and aging resistance of PF-modified asphalt. However, under extremely low temperatures, PF's brittleness may impact asphalt flexibility. Nonetheless, the structural advantages of PF-modified asphalt, such as improved mixture density and stability, contribute to enhanced high-temperature performance, water stability, adhesion, and freeze-thaw cycle stability. This research demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of using PF to enhance the overall performance of base asphalt and asphalt mixtures for road construction.

Modifying Effect and Mechanism of Polymer Powder on the Properties of Asphalt Binder for Engineering Application

For achieving the better modifying effect of polyurethane on asphalt pavement materials, the PUA powder modifier was prepared with fine grinding at the glass transition temperature, and polyurethane-modified asphalt (PUA-MA) with different dosages of modifier was prepared. The impact of the PUA on the physical properties of asphalt binder was studied. The modifying mechanism of PUA on asphalt was explored by investigating the thermal performance and chemical composition of asphalt (thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry test, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy). The micrograph of the interactive interface was characterized by scanning an electron microscope. Furthermore, the rheological properties of PUA-MA were also investigated and analyzed. The results indicated that the PUA had a dense structure with few pores on the surface. After mixing with asphalt, it altered the asphalt's internal structure via physical fusion and chemical reaction (carbamate formation). PUA improved the thermal stability of asphalt, enhanced the asphalt's thermal decomposition temperature, and further reduced the thermal mass loss while decreasing the glass transition temperature. The addition and dosage increase in the PUA modifier significantly improved the softening point, viscosity, complex shear modulus, and rutting factor of asphalt. Also, the PUA could improve the elastic recovery ability of asphalt and enhance the rutting resistance of asphalt at high temperatures. However, the crack resistance at low temperatures was not effectively improved (ductility and penetration decreased). When the dosage was 6-9%, PUA-MA had the best high-temperature performance, but asphalt showed poor low-temperature performance at this dosage. This study provides a theoretical reference for popularizing and applying polyurethane as an asphalt modifier in road engineering.

Probing the Effect of Linear and Crosslinked POE-g-GMA on the Properties of Asphalt

The copolymer ethylene-octene (POE) has good aging resistance and is an inexpensive asphalt additive compared to the styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer (SBS). However, POE is easy to segregate in asphalt during storage at high temperatures. Grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto the molecular backbone of POE (i.e., POE-g-GMA) may solve this problem, for the epoxy groups in GMA can react with the active groups in asphalt. Asphalt modified with linear and crosslinked POE-g-GMA were prepared, and the hot storage stability, physical properties and thermal oxidation aging properties were discussed in detail. The results show that linear and low-degree crosslinked POE-g-GMA-modified asphalts are storage-stable at high temperatures via measurements of the difference in softening points and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) characterizations from macro and micro perspectives. The difference in softening points (ΔSP) between the upper and lower ends is no more than 3.5 °C for modified asphalts after 48 h of being in an oven at 163 °C. More importantly, the crosslinking modification of POE-g-GMA can further increase the softening point and reduce the penetration as well as rheological properties via conventional physical property, dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and multiple-stress creep recovery (MSCR) tests. Furthermore, asphalt modified with crosslinked POE-g-GMA reveals better aging resistance via measurements of the performance retention rate and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) characterizations after a rolling thin film oven test (RTFOT). This work may provide further guidelines for the application of polymers in asphalt.

Performance Study of Waste PE-Modified High-Grade Asphalt

In this work, waste polyethylene (PE)-modified 90# asphalt was made in order to investigate the performance of waste polyethylene-modified high-grade asphalt and the optimal blending quantity. Dynamic Shear Rheology (DSR) and Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) tests were used to evaluate the high- and low-temperature performance of modified 90# PE-modified asphalt. Infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy were used to investigate the modification process and distribution status of waste PE in 90# asphalt. The DSR and BBR tests revealed that waste PE enhanced the high-temperature performance of 90# base asphalt and that 5% was the best blending rate. However, the change affects asphalt's low-temperature performance, and the negative effect on asphalt's low-temperature performance was minimized at 1% dosing. The incorporation of waste PE absorbed the light components of asphalt, while waste PE can form a reticulated structure in asphalt, which improves its high-temperature performance but degrades its low-temperature performance, according to the results of infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy.

Critical review on waste cooking oil rejuvenation in asphalt mixture with high recycled asphalt

Waste cooking oil (WCO) as a rejuvenator is gaining attention in the pavement industry to incorporate higher reclaimed asphalt (RA) in asphalt mixture. This review article provides a comprehensive review on the current state and the feasibility of turning WCO and RA into cleaner and sustainable asphalt pavement material. Considering the advancements in research related to the utilization of WCO in RA mixture, it was necessary to critically review the past and recent studies to provide a methodological scope for future research. The review discusses a plethora of characteristics focusing on chemical, rheological, simulation, environmental, and economical findings related to the utilization of WCO in RA mixtures. Based on the review, WCO can be adjudged as a potential material to rejuvenate asphalt mixtures with higher recycled asphalt content. Furthermore, although WCO enhances low-to-intermediate temperature performance, studies indicated that moisture damage and higher temperature properties are compromised. Future research scope exists in understanding the rejuvenation capabilities of different WCOs and blends of different types of WCO, optimizing the transesterification process of WCO to improve its quality, molecular dynamic simulations focusing on transesterified WCO, quantification of environmental and economic benefits of recycled asphalt mixtures with WCO, and field performance studies.

Evaluation of Bitumen Modification Using a Fast-Reacting SBS Polymer at a Low Modifier Percentage

The study presented in this paper investigates the application of asphalt bitumen modification using a fast-reacting SBS polymer at a low modifier percentage. The hypothesis is that a fast-reacting styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer that composes only 2% to 3% of the weight of the bitumen modification could extend the life of the pavement surfacing and pavement performance at relatively low input costs, increasing the net present value produced by the pavement during its life cycle. To confirm or refute this hypothesis, two types of road bitumens CA 35/50 and 50/70 were modified with low amounts of fast-reacting SBS polymer with the expectation of attaining properties similar to a 10/40-65 modified bitumen. For each type of unmodified bitumen, bitumen modification and comparative 10/40-65 modified bitumen, the following tests were conducted: needle penetration, softening point-ring and ball test method, and ductility test. The second part of the article focuses on a comparison of asphalt mixtures with different compositions of coarse-grain curves. For each mixture, complex modulus with varying temperatures and fatigue resistances are represented by the Wöhler diagram and compared. Based on in labo testing, the impact of the modification on pavement performance is evaluated. Life cycle changes for each type of modified and unmodified mixtures are quantified as road user costs, and attained benefits are compared with increased construction costs.

Properties and Characterization Techniques of Graphene Modified Asphalt Binders

Graphene is a carbon-based nanomaterial used in various industries to improve the performance of hundreds of materials. For instance, graphene-like materials have been employed as asphalt binder modifying agents in pavement engineering. In the literature, it has been reported that (in comparison to an unmodified binder) the Graphene Modified Asphalt Binders (GMABs) exhibit an enhanced performance grade, a lower thermal susceptibility, a higher fatigue life, and a decreased accumulation of permanent deformations. Nonetheless, although GMABs stand out significantly from traditional alternatives, there is still no consensus on their behavior regarding chemical, rheological, microstructural, morphological, thermogravimetric, and surface topography properties. Therefore, this research conducted a literature review on the properties and advanced characterization techniques of GMABs. Thus, the laboratory protocols covered by this manuscript are atomic force microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic shear rheometer, elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Consequently, the main contribution of this investigation to the state-of-the-art is the identification of the prominent trends and gaps in the current state of knowledge.

Production and characterisation of waste tire pyrolytic oil - Investigating physical and rheological behaviour of pyrolytic oil modified asphalt binder

The effort of basic restrict the use of petroleum-based products, the use of recycling and alternative resources have tremendous gained interest in the last decades. In this experimental study, waste tire granules were pyrolyzed under a vacuum atmosphere. Pyrolysis experiments occurred in a fixed bed reactor at 450 °C. The chemical characterisation of the pyrolytic oil was exanimated by various analytical methods, such as Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultimate and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). It was determined that mainly contains aliphatic and aromatic compounds. In addition, pyrolytic oil was used as a partial replacement for conventional asphalt (petroleum-based) to limit the use of conventional asphalt in the applications of road engineering. The effect of the pyrolytic oil additive on the fundamental physical behaviours of the asphalt was evaluated, and also rheological behaviour of the asphalt binder was investigated by the viscosity (RV) and bending-beam-rheometer (BBR) tests. The addition of pyrolytic oil affected some physical properties of asphalt binders more or less. It was found that conventional and pyrolytic oil-modified asphalt samples met the technical requirement based on BS EN 14771 standard. Finally, it can be concluded that asphalt modified with pyrolytic oil can be used in road engineering applications under low-temperature conditions.

Incorporation of the Multi-Layer Plastic Packaging in the Asphalt Binders: Physical, Thermal, Rheological, and Storage Properties Evaluation

The amount of residual Multi-layer Plastic Packaging (MPP) in Canada has greatly increased in the last two decades, which has economic and environmental consequences. MPP is primarily made up of two or more layers of Polyethylene (PE), Polyester (PET), Nylon (NY), and Metalized Polyester (METPET). While MPP has not been used as an asphalt modifier, some of the materials commonly found in MPP, such as PE and PET, have also been successfully used as asphalt modifiers. Nevertheless, a few recent studies have demonstrated the potential for reusing MPP as an asphalt modifier to improve asphalt pavement performance. Recycling post-industrial MPP instead of using raw polymers could lead to economic and environmental benefits. However, a comprehensive study to evaluate MPP as a viable asphalt additive is lacking. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of using MPP as an asphalt modifier via the wet method, considering the physical, thermal, rheological, and storage properties of the MPP-modified binder at different MPP concentrations (2%, 4%, and 8%) in asphalt cement (PG 58-28). MPP-modified binders were evaluated using the following instruments: Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Superpave Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR), Rotational Viscosity (RV), and Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM). Test results indicated that the incorporation of MPP has a strong potential to improve permanent deformation resistance at high temperatures. In addition, MPP shows a moderate impact on fatigue cracking performance at intermediate temperatures. Overall, in low-temperature climates, using less than 4% of MPP additives would offer higher fatigue damage resistance along with adequate permanent deformation. In high-temperature climates, higher concentrations of additives may be preferable to resist permanent deformation. Finally, MPP is a challenge for existing recycling systems, and its incorporation into asphalt applications may develop more sustainable materials that would contribute to circular economy principles.

Study on the Effect of Ultraviolet Absorber UV-531 on the Performance of SBS-Modified Asphalt

Asphalt pavements at high altitudes are susceptible to aging and disease under prolonged action of UV light. To improve their anti-ultraviolet aging performance, UV-531/SBS-modified asphalts with UV-531 dopings of 0.4%, 0.7%, and 1.0% were prepared by the high-speed shear method, and the effect of UV-531 on the conventional performance of SBS-modified asphalt before aging was studied by needle penetration, softening point and 5 °C ductility tests. The high- and low-temperature rheological properties of UV-531/SBS-modified asphalt before and after aging were also analyzed by high temperature dynamic shear rheology test and low-temperature glass transition temperature test. Finally, the effect of UV-531 on the anti-aging performance of SBS-modified asphalt was evaluated by three methods, including rutting factor ratio, viscosity aging index, and infrared spectroscopy. The results show that with the increase of UV-531 doping, the needle penetration and 5 °C ductility show an increasing trend, but the effect on the softening point is small. The high temperature stability of SBS-modified asphalt is not much affected by the addition of UV-531, and the low-temperature stability is improved, and when 0.7% UV absorber is added, SBS-modified asphalt shows better low-temperature performance. The results of all three evaluation methods show that the addition of UV-531 significantly improved the anti-UV aging performance of SBS-modified asphalt, with the amount of 0.7% providing the asphalt with the best anti-UV aging performance. The results of the study can provide an important reference for improving the anti-ultraviolet aging performance of SBS-modified asphalt.

Modification of Bitumen with Recycled PET Plastics from Waste Materials

Nowadays in the world, due to the constant desire for recycling, many countries are considering the use of recycled plastics on roads. Modification of bitumen for roads in Kazakhstan is considered one of the most suitable and popular approaches. This paper presents the results of research on the modification of bitumen by recycled plastics from waste materials. The paper describes the details of the use of plastic waste as bitumen modifiers, with a specific focus on recycled plastics and how they can potentially be used to enhance bitumen performance and the road durability. The main physical and mechanical characteristics of the modified bitumen were determined after routine tests, penetration and plasticity, softening temperature, brittleness temperature on Fraas and microscopic analysis. The morphology of the modified bitumen was studied using scanning electron microscopy. The results confirm that the modified bitumen complies with the requirements for polymer-bitumen binder of Kazakhstani standards and is suitable for the production of modified bitumen by its physical and chemical characteristics.

Study of the Effect of the Use of Asphalt Binders Modified with Polymer Fibres from End-of-Life Tyres (ELT) on the Mechanical Properties of Hot Mix Asphalt at Different Operating Temperatures

Processing of end-of-life tyres (ELT) produces polymer fibres (PFELT) as a by-product. PFELT currently presents a challenge to the recycling industry, due to the increasing numbers of ELT and lack of alternatives for the re-use of this material. The object of this investigation was to propose an alternative for re-using PFELT, in order to improve the performance properties of hot mix asphalt (HMA). This study enabled us to understand the relation between the addition of polymer fibre to the aggregate-binder matrix of the HMA in depth, as well as its effects on the mechanical properties of the resulting asphalt mix. To do this, we first made a physical and chemical characterization of the PFELT (TGA, SEM, polarized light, and fluorescence microscopy), establishing a modification methodology using two asphalt binders (CA-24 and CA-14) and three PFELT contents (0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5%). The HMA was designed using the Marshall method. The mechanical performance of the HMA was evaluated in a range of operating temperatures, from -10 °C to 50 °C, observing the following properties: (1) resistance to thermal cracking; (2) stiffness modulus; (3) indirect tensile strength; and (4) resistance to permanent deformation. The results show that the addition of 0.3% and 0.5% of PFELT to the asphalt binder significantly improved the mechanical performance properties of the mixes studied, with a greater effect at high operating temperatures; the resistance to permanent deformation increased by more than 30%.

Effect of Biochar from Oat Hulls on the Physical Properties of Asphalt Binder

The purpose of this study was to verify the feasibility of using biochar from oat hulls (BO) as a potential bio-modifier to improve the physical properties of conventional asphalt binder. The BO and asphalt binder were characterized by confocal (fluorescence) laser microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Then, an asphalt binder modification procedure was established and modifications with 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5% of BO on the weight of the asphalt binder were evaluated, using a particle size < 75 µm. The physical properties of the evaluated modified asphalt binder with BO were: rotational viscosity in original and aged state, aging index, Fraass breaking point, softening point, penetration, penetration rate and storage stability. The results indicated that the BO has a porous structure, able to interact with the asphalt binder by C=O and C=C bonds. In addition, modification of the asphalt binder with BO increases the rotational viscosity related to high-temperature rutting resistance. The results obtained from the Fraass breaking point and softening point indicated that the use of BO extends the viscoelastic range of the asphalt binder. In addition, the evaluated modifications present low susceptibility to aging and good storage stability.

Production of Distilled Bitumen from High-Viscosity Crude Oils of Ukrainian Fields

The characteristics of initial crudes of Yablunivske field (Poltava, Ukraine) and the properties of blended crudes have been examined to select the ways of their further processing. The crude oils were found to be heavy high-sulfuric oils without light distillates. The possibility of obtaining paving bitumen from blended crudes under study has been considered. Distilled bitumen obtained through distillation of this blend was found to meet the requirements for commercial paving bitumen 100/150. To improve the durability and resistance to aging of resulting bitumen, a polymeric modifier was added. The modifier amount of 3 wt.% was found to be appropriate to improve the operational characteristics of obtained bitumen to those of BMW 60/90 grade.

Optimization of the Physical Properties of HDPE/PU Blends through Improved Compatibility and Electron Beam Crosslinking

Polymer blending is a method in which polymers with different properties are mixed so that each advantage appears in one polymer blend. Improved thermal and mechanical properties of blends can be prepared by blending with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) of a non-polar polymer and polyurethane (PU) of a polar polymer. However, a compatibilizer is required because it has the disadvantage that blending has low miscibility due to the different phases. In this study, HDPE/PU blends with new and excellent physical properties were developed through optimal composition with improved compatibility between the HDPE and PU. In addition, the effects of improving the physical properties through electron-beam crosslinking were confirmed. In general, a crosslinking structure of HDPE is formed by electron beam irradiation to increase its thermal stability and strength, but its elongation is rapidly decreased. In particular, the elongation of HDPE irradiated at 100 kGy was about 110%, which was decreased about five times compared to unirradiated HDPE (510%). However, the HDPE/PU blend with improved compatibility (PU 30) showed an elongation of about 450% while maintaining excellent strength (22.5 MPa), which was increased by about four times compared to the HDPE irradiated at 100 kGy. In particular, the thermal stability of PU 30 irradiated at 100 kGy at a high temperature (180 °C) was improved more than six times compared to the HDPE. Therefore, it is possible to develop HDPE/PU blends with new and excellent physical properties by improving compatibility and using electron beam crosslinking technology.

Bionic Synthesis of Mussel-like Adhesive L-DMA and Its Effects on Asphalt Properties

Cracks are inevitable during the service life of asphalt pavement and the water at the fracture surfaces tends to cause the grouting materials to fail. Studies have shown that the catechol groups in adhesion proteins secreted by mussels can produce strong adhesion performance in the water. In this paper, the mussel-like adhesive L-Dopa Methacrylic anhydride (L-DMA) was prepared based on the concept of bionic design and used to improve the properties of asphalt. By using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the thermal stability and structural composition of L-DMA were investigated. Then, the rheological and low-temperature properties of L-DMA-modified asphalt were investigated using the dynamic shear rheological (DSR) test and bending beam rheological (BBR) test. Moreover, the modification mechanism was explored by FTIR. It was found that L-DMA can be effectively synthesized and has good thermal stability. The incorporation of L-DMA increases the composite modulus, viscosity, creep recovery rate and rutting factor of asphalt binder, resulting in an enhancement of its high-temperature performance. At a high L-DMA content of 10%, the low-temperature performance of the modified asphalt was enhanced. The modification of L-DMA to asphalt is mainly a physical process. Hydrogen bonds and conjugated systems generated by the introduction of catechol groups enhance the adhesion properties of asphalt. In general, L-DMA improves the properties of asphalt and theoretically can improve the water resistance of asphalt, which will be explored in future research.

Rutting Behaviour of Geopolymer and Styrene Butadiene Styrene-Modified Asphalt Binder

Modifying asphalt binders is an effective method of improving the performance of asphalt pavement, such as its resistance to rutting. However, because modification changes the behaviour of binders, substantial laboratory testing is required before field application to determine the best mixtures. This research aimed to evaluate the impacts of temperature, stresses, polymer type, and modification rate on the rutting behaviour of the asphalt binder modified with fly-ash-based geopolymer (GF), styrene butadiene styrene (SBS), and a combination of SBS and GF. The rheological properties of asphalt binders were investigated using the frequency sweep test at various temperatures. Additionally, the multiple stress creep recovery test was conducted at various temperatures and stresses to calculate the non-recoverable creep compliance (Jnr) and the percent strain recovery (R). The rutting resistance of asphalt mixture was assessed using the Hamburg wheel rut test. The results revealed that the asphalt binder with 8% geopolymer (8%GF) exhibited the best response in terms of complex shear modulus (G*), rutting factor (G*/sinδ), R, and Jnr compared to the 4%GF and 12%GF at different temperatures. Another interesting finding is that GF’s use in the hybrid binder (2%SBS + 8%GF) led to a significant increase in the shear complex modulus and a decrease in the phase angle compared to the binder modified with 2%SBS. The geopolymer decreased the binder’s sensitivity to temperature for both unaged and RTFO asphalt binders. The hybrid binder would also improve strain recovery under high stress and temperatures and the ability to withstand severe traffic loads. Furthermore, there is a crucial relationship between temperature and Jnr, which could help asphalt pavement designers select suitable modifiers considering the local climate and traffic volume.

Effect of Carbon Nanofibers on Physical, Adhesion and Rheological Properties of Liquid Epoxidized Natural Rubber Modified Asphalt

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) on the performance of liquid epoxidized natural rubber (LENR)-modified asphalt. The physical, adhesion and rheological properties were determined by several tests such as penetration, elastic recovery, ring and ball softening point, Brookfield rotational viscometer, AFM and dynamic shear rheometer. LENR was used at concentrations of 3, 6, and 9%, while CNFs were used at contents of 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5% by weight of asphalt. Conventional test results showed that the increases in LENR and LENR/CNFs composite contents in binder leads to an increase in the hardness and consistency and a reduction in the temperature susceptibility of base asphalt. Adhesion results revealed that the addition of CNFs significantly increases the adhesion and bonding properties of base and rubberized binders. Rheological properties analysis exhibited that LENR improved the viscoelastic properties and permanent deformation resistance of asphalt at different temperatures and frequencies. On the other hand, it was found that the addition of CNFs significantly improves the stiffness, elasticity, and hardness of LENR-modified binders. The 6% LENR and 0.4% CNFs were found to be the optimum to enhance the physical, adhesion, and rheological properties of asphalt in this study. Thus, it can be stated that the addition of CNFs is promising to improve the performance of rubberized binders for high temperature applications.

Mechanical Behavior of Low-Density Polyethylene Waste Modified Hot Mix Asphalt

The use of polymeric waste in the modification of asphalt binders for the construction of road pavements is a technique studied several years ago. However, the use of these materials involves high temperatures close to 190 °C, which generate large environmental impacts due to their emissions. In this study, an asphalt cement (AC) with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) residue contents of 5%, 7%, and 10% with respect to the mass of the AC was modified by the wet method. The modification was carried out using a temperature of 150 °C with the aim of preventing the oxidation of the AC and reducing the emissions generated at high temperatures. Based on the physical-rheological properties of the modified asphalt binder, it was found that 5% LDPE produces the best performance. Subsequently, a hot-mix asphalt type HMA-19 control without a modified asphalt binder and another with a modified asphalt binder were manufactured in order to evaluate the mechanical behavior by means of the Marshall test, an indirect tensile strength (ITS) test, resilient modulus (RM) testing, resistance to fatigue testing, permanent deformation testing, and the Cantabro test. Additionally, the asphalt mixtures were tested under the conditions of short-term aging (STOA, Short-Term Oven Aging), long-term aging (STOA + LTOA, Long-Term Oven Aging), and partial saturation with water (STOA + LTOA + water). Based on the results, an ANOVA analysis of variance was performed to assess whether the changes in the mechanical response of the modified mixture are statistically significant with respect to the control mixture. As a general conclusion, it is reported that mixtures with LDPE can be used for thick layers in high-temperature climates in order to control rutting.

Using Plastic Waste in a Circular Economy Approach to Improve the Properties of Bituminous Binders

This work aims to use wax to modify a binder employed in the paving industry. This wax can be obtained either directly or as a by-product from plastic waste′s thermal cracking (pyrolysis). The study characterizes this sustainable material and the binders resulting from blending it with conventional or modified bitumen with other additives applied in the manufacture of bituminous mixtures. Different tests were used: thermogravimetric and spectroscopic analysis; consistency tests; testing of dynamic viscosity at various temperatures; and assessment of the rheologic properties of binders. As a result, several crucial findings were reached: this sustainable wax promotes changes in the viscosity of the binders, their handling temperatures can be reduced, and it contributes to some goals of the U.N. 2030 Agenda. In summary, this work allowed us to conclude that the positive effects of a suitable modification of the bituminous binders, which incorporated this wax and other additives, led to improved consistency and rheological behaviour, having provided, for example, lower temperature susceptibility and higher permanent deformation resistance.

Using Waste Plastics as Asphalt Modifier: A Review

The use of waste products in the production of asphalt binders and asphalt mixtures has become widespread due to economic and environmental benefits. In particular, the use of recycled waste plastic in asphalt binders and mixtures is gaining more attention. This review presents analyses and comparisons of various forms of waste plastic used in asphalt modification, and approaches to incorporating waste plastic into asphalt mixtures, both for single and composite modifications. It focuses on the properties of waste plastics, asphalt binders, and asphalt mixtures. Overall, the incorporation of plastic waste into asphalt mixtures can significantly improve high-temperature performance and has potential economic and environmental benefits. The performance of modified asphalt is highly dependent on multiple factors, such as waste sources, waste plastic dosages, blending conditions, and the pretreatment methods for waste plastic. There are different ways to apply waste plastics to blend into a mixture. In addition, this paper discusses the current challenges for waste plastic-modified asphalt, including the stability, low-temperature performance, modification mechanism, and laboratory problems of the blends. The use of chemical methods, such as additives and functionalization, is considered an effective way to achieve better interactions between waste plastics and the binder, as well as achieving a higher sufficiency utilization rate of waste plastics. Although both methods provide alternative options to produce waste plastic-modified asphalt with stability and high performance, the optimal proportion of materials used in the blends and the microcosmic mechanism of composite modified asphalt are not clear, and should be explored further.

Correlation between Rheological Fatigue Tests on Bitumen and Various Cracking Tests on Asphalt Mixtures

Accurate characterisation and appropriate binder selection are essential to increase the load-induced cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures at an intermediate temperature. Hence, the primary goal of this study was to correlate the cracking resistance exerted by the binder with the cracking performance of asphalt mixtures. The laboratory-based experimental plan covered various types of laboratory tests specified by various agencies and road authorities to study the correlation of a neat bitumen and five polymer-modified binders with their corresponding asphalt mixtures. The fatigue life of the binders was assessed through a Linear Amplitude Sweep (LAS) test and statistically correlated with various load-induced cracking parameters from the indirect tensile test, semi-circular bending (SCB) test, and four points bending beam test (FPBB) of asphalt mixtures at 25 °C. Binders and mixes were further grouped depending on their polymeric family (i.e., modified with a particular type of polymer) to validate their statistical correlation. The indicator that mostly correlated the binder properties with the asphalt mixture properties is the secant modulus from the SCB test. Fatigue parameters obtained through LAS better explain the asphalt fatigue performance obtained through FPBB; specifically, asphalt tests at high strain levels (e.g., 400 micro strain) better correlate to the LAS fatigue parameter (Nf).

Sustainable Polymers from Recycled Waste Plastics and Their Virgin Counterparts as Bitumen Modifiers: A Comprehensive Review

The failure of bituminous pavements takes place due to heavy traffic loads and weather-related conditions, such as moisture, temperature, and UV radiation. To overcome or minimize such failures, a great effort has been put in recent years to enhance the material properties of bitumen, ultimately improving field performance and increasing the pavement service life. Polymer modification is considered one of the most suitable and by far the most popular approach. Elastomers, chemically functionalised thermoplastics and plastomers * (* Note: notwithstanding the fact that in Polymer Science the word 'plastomer' indicates a polymer with the simultaneous behaviour of an elastomer and plastics (thermoplastics), this paper uses the term 'plastomer' to indicate a thermoplastic polymer as it is more commonly found in Civil and Pavement Engineering.) are the most commonly used polymers for bitumen modification. Plastomers provide several advantages and are commonly acknowledged to improve high-temperature stiffness, although some of them are more prone to phase separation and consequent storage instability. Nowadays, due to the recent push for recycling, many road authorities are looking at the use of recycled plastics in roads. Hence, some of the available plastomers-in pellet, flakes, or powder form-are coming from materials recycling facilities rather than chemical companies. This review article describes the details of using plastomers as bitumen modifiers-with a specific focus on recycled plastics-and how these can potentially be used to enhance bitumen performance and the road durability. Chemical modifiers for improving the compatibility between plastomers and bitumen are also addressed in this review. Plastomers, either individual or in combination of two or three polymers, are found to offer great stiffness at high temperature. Different polymers including HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE, MDPE, PP, PS, PET, EMA, and EVA have been successfully employed for bitumen modification. However, each of them has its own merit and demerit as thoroughly discussed in the paper. The recent push in using recycled materials in roads has brought new light to the use of virgin and recycled plastomers for bitumen modification as a low-cost and somehow environmental beneficial solution for roads and pavements.

Investigating Physio-Thermo-Mechanical Properties of Polyurethane and Thermoplastics Nanocomposite in Various Applications

The effect of the soft and hard polyurethane (PU) segments caused by the hydrogen link in phase-separation kinetics was studied to investigate the morphological annealing of PU and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The significance of the segmented PUs is to achieve enough stability for further applications in biomedical and environmental fields. In addition, other research focuses on widening the plastic features and adjusting the PU-polyimide ratio to create elastomer of the poly(urethane-imide). Regarding TPU- and PU-nanocomposite, numerous studies investigated the incorporation of inorganic nanofillers such as carbon or clay to incorporating TPU-nanocomposite in several applications. Additionally, the complete exfoliation was observed up to 5% and 3% of TPU-clay modified with 12 amino lauric acid and benzidine, respectively. PU-nanocomposite of 5 wt.% Cloisite®30B showed an increase in modulus and tensile strength by 110% and 160%, respectively. However, the nanocomposite PU-0.5 wt.% Carbone Nanotubes (CNTs) show an increase in the tensile modulus by 30% to 90% for blown and flat films, respectively. Coating PU influences stress-strain behavior because of the interaction between the soft segment and physical crosslinkers. The thermophysical properties of the TPU matrix have shown two glass transition temperatures (Tg's) corresponding to the soft and the hard segment. Adding a small amount of tethered clay shifts Tg for both segments by 44 °C and 13 °C, respectively, while adding clay from 1 to 5 wt.% results in increasing the thermal stability of TPU composite from 12 to 34 °C, respectively. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to investigate the phase structure of PU dispersion, showing an increase in thermal stability, solubility, and flexibility. Regarding the electrical properties, the maximum piezoresistivity (10 S/m) of 7.4 wt.% MWCNT was enhanced by 92.92%. The chemical structure of the PU-CNT composite has shown a degree of agglomeration under disruption of the sp2 carbon structure. However, with extended graphene loading to 5.7 wt.%, piezoresistivity could hit 10-1 S/m, less than 100 times that of PU. In addition to electrical properties, the acoustic behavior of MWCNT (0.35 wt.%)/SiO2 (0.2 wt.%)/PU has shown sound absorption of 80 dB compared to the PU foam sample. Other nanofillers, such as SiO2, TiO2, ZnO, Al2O3, were studied showing an improvement in the thermal stability of the polymer and enhancing scratch and abrasion resistance.

Evaluation and Comparison of Mechanical Properties of Polymer-Modified Asphalt Mixtures

Polymer modification is extensively used in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) because the available asphalt cement does not satisfy the high-temperature requirements. It was widely used in KSA for more than two decades, and there is little information regarding the differences in the performance of different polymers approved for binder modification. Pavement engineers require performance comparisons among various polymers to select the best polymer for modification rather than make their selection based on satisfying binder specifications. Furthermore, the mechanical properties can help select polymer type, producing mixes of better resistance to specific pavement distresses. The study objective was to compare the mechanical properties of the various polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) mixtures that are widely used in the Riyadh region. Control mix and five other mixes with different polymers (Lucolast 7010, Anglomak 2144, Pavflex140, SBS KTR 401, and EE-2) were prepared. PMA mixtures were evaluated through different mechanical tests, including dynamic modulus, flow number, Hamburg wheel tracking, and indirect tensile strength. The results show an improvement in mechanical properties for all PMA mixtures relative to the control mixture. Based on the overall comparison, the asphalt mixture with polymer Anglomk2144 was ranked the best performing mixture, followed by Paveflex140 and EE-2.

A Review on Bitumen Aging and Rejuvenation Chemistry: Processes, Materials and Analyses

During the last decades, extensive research has been carried out on using reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) material in the production of hot recycled mix asphalt. Unfortunately, the aged, stiff, and brittle binder in the RAP typically increases the mixture stiffness and can therefore cause fatigue and low-temperature damages. In the scientific literature, there are many studies concerning the aging and rejuvenation of bitumen, but there is a lack of up-to-date reviews that bring them together, especially those facing the phenomena from a chemical point of view. In this paper, a recap of the chemical aspects of virgin, aged, and rejuvenated bitumen is proposed in order to provide a useful summary of the state of the art, with the aim of both encouraging the use of an increasing quantity of RAP in hot mix asphalt and trying to give indications for further research.

Multiscale mechanisms of asphalt performance enhancement by crumbed waste tire rubber: insight from molecular dynamics simulation

The recycling of waste tires is a major environmental problem facing mankind, and the addition of crumbed waste tire rubber (CWTB) to the base asphalt is an extremely promising recycling method. However, the modification mechanism of CWTB to asphalt is not well understood, which restricts the development of CWTB modified asphalt. In this study, the mechanism of CWTB modification of asphalt was explored by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), fluorescence microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and molecular dynamic (MD) simulations. After verifying the asphalt reasonableness using glass transition temperature, CWTB modified asphalt was simulated and experimented. The results showed that CWTB enhanced the high temperature performance of the base asphalt. The microscopic mechanism by which this phenomenon occurs is that CWTB has the largest binding energy with the aromatics (1150-1350 kcal/mol), followed by the saturates (740-830 kcal/mol), followed by the resins (90-330 kcal/mol), and the smallest binding energy with the asphaltenes (100-140 kcal/mol), which causes CWTB to absorb the light components of the asphalt (aromatics and saturates). In addition, the introduction of CWTB reduces the diffusion coefficient of asphalt. In this process, CWTB will gradually swell, which causes CWTB to bind more and more tightly with the base asphalt, and eventually the good high temperature performance of CWTB is transferred to the base asphalt. The macroscopic manifestation of this process is that the rutting factor of CWTB-modified asphalt is significantly higher than that of virgin asphalt. This study can provide basic theoretical support for the application of CWTB-modified asphalt.

Effects of Amorphous Poly Alpha Olefin (APAO) and Polyphosphoric Acid (PPA) on the Rheological Properties, Compatibility and Stability of Asphalt Binder

High production costs and poor storage stability have become important constraints in the manufacture of modified asphalt binder. To simplify the production process and reduce the production cost, amorphous poly alpha olefin (APAO) and polyphosphoric acid (PPA) were applied to prepare highly stable modified asphalt binder. The influence of APAO/PPA on the temperature sensitivity, rheological property, storage stability, compatibility and microstructure of neat binder were studied by rotational viscosity (RV), dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), bending beam rheometer (BBR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results show that the incorporation of APAO/PPA reduced the temperature sensitivity of neat binder. The combined effect of APAO/PPA contributed to the improvement in deformation resistance, which was evidenced by the increase in failure temperature and percent recovery. However, the compound modification of APAO/PPA decreased the binder’s low-temperature performance. APAO strengthened the fatigue resistance of the binder, while PPA reduced the anti-fatigue performance. Composite modified asphalt binder with superior storage stability could be prepared, which was confirmed by the desired Cole–Cole plots and fluorescence imaging. Furthermore, chemical and physical reactions occurred during the APAO/PPA modification process. Overall, 2 wt.% (weight percentage) APAO and 1.5 wt.% PPA are recommended for the production of modified asphalt binder with remarkable rheological performance and storage stability.

Mechanical Characteristics of Graphene Nanoplatelets-Modified Asphalt Mixes: A Comparison with Polymer- and Not-Modified Asphalt Mixes

In recent years, nanotechnology has sparked an interest in nanomodification of bituminous materials to increase the viscosity of asphalt binders and improves the rutting and fatigue resistance of asphalt mixtures. This paper presents the experimental results of laboratory tests on bituminous mixtures laid on a 1052 m-long test section built in Rome, Italy. Four asphalt mixtures for wearing and binder layer were considered: two polymer modified asphalt concretes (the former modified with the additive Superplast and the latter modified with styrene–butadiene–styrene), a “hard” graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) modified asphalt concrete and a not-modified mixture. The indirect tensile strength, water sensitivity, stiffness modulus, and fatigue resistance of the mixtures were tested and compared. A statistical analysis based on the results has shown that the mixtures with GNPs have higher mechanical performances than the others: GNP could significantly improve the tested mechanical performances; further studies will be carried out to investigate its effect on rutting and skid resistance.

Using Molecular Dynamics Simulation to Analyze the Feasibility of Using Waste Cooking Oil as an Alternative Rejuvenator for Aged Asphalt

The purpose of this study was to investigate the regeneration effect of waste cooking oil (WCO) on aged asphalt with molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, comparing it with a rejuvenator. Firstly, the molecular models of virgin and aged asphalt were established by blending the four components of asphalt (saturate, aromatic, resin, and asphaltenes). Then, different dosages of the rejuvenator and WCO (6, 9, and 12%) were included in the aged asphalt model for its regeneration. After that, MD simulations were utilized for researching the mechanical and cohesive properties of the recycled asphalt, including its density, viscosity, cohesive energy density (CED), shear modulus (G), bulk modulus (K), and elastic modulus (E). The results show that the density values of the asphalt models were relatively lower than the existing experimental results in the literature, which is mostly attributed to the fact that the heteroatoms of the asphalt molecules were not considered in the simulation. On the other hand, the WCO addition decreased the viscosity, the shear modulus (G), the bulk modulus (K), and the elastic modulus (E) of the aged asphalt, improving its CED. Moreover, the nature of the aged asphalt was gradually restored with increasing rejuvenator or WCO contents. Compared with the rejuvenator, the viscosity of the aged asphalt was more effectively restored through adding WCO, while the effect of the CED and the mechanical properties recovery of the aged asphalt was relatively low. This implies that WCO could restore partial mechanical properties of aging asphalt, which proves the possibility of using WCO as an asphalt rejuvenator. Additionally, the MD simulation played an important role in understanding the molecular interactions among the four components of asphalt and the rejuvenator, which will serve as a guideline to better design a WCO rejuvenator and optimize its content.

Utilisation of Waste-Based Geopolymer in Asphalt Pavement Modification and Construction—A Review

The use of geopolymer in pavement constructions is strongly encouraged. Many studies have demonstrated the vast potential of using industrial-by-products-based geopolymers. This paper discusses the modification of asphalt binders with geopolymers, namely geopolymer-modified asphalt (GMA) and geopolymer-modified asphalt mixture (GMAM). In addition, curing geopolymer materials, engineering properties, production techniques, and prospective utilisation in the pavement construction, such as durability and sustainability, are also discussed. The literature review showed that many industrial by-products, including red mud, blast furnace slag, fly ash, and mine waste, are used to produce geopolymers because of the metal components such as silicon and aluminium in these materials. The geopolymers from these materials influence the rheological and physical properties of asphalt binders. Geopolymers can enhance asphalt mixture performance, such as stability, fatigue, rutting, and low-temperature cracking. The use of geopolymers in asphalt pavement has beneficial impacts on sustainability and economic and environmental benefits.

Synergy Effect of Nano-Organic Palygorskite on the Properties of Star-Shaped SBS-Modified Asphalt

With the rapid development of economic construction, styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)-modified asphalt is being more and more widely used in highway engineering, but there are still many deficiencies in the process of its use. In order to further improve its performance for use, nano-organic palygorskite (A-Pal) and star-shaped SBS were compounded to obtain modified asphalt in this study. The high-temperature stability of SBS-modified asphalt was enhanced after incorporation with A-Pal for the high-temperature stability test by a dynamic shear rheometer. The A-Pal should improve the surface free energy and adhesion of SBS-modified asphalt by the water stability test analysis. The aging test shows that A-Pal can reduce the thermal oxygen decomposition of SBS and improve the anti-aging performance and the fatigue resistance of SBS-modified asphalt. A-Pal has a certain improvement effect on the low temperature performance of SBS-modified asphalt as shown by a low temperature crack resistance test. A-Pal-compounded SBS-modified asphalt features good storage stability in normal temperatures with the lowest critical compatibility temperature.

The Effect of Silica Nanofiller on the Physical and Thermal Characteristics of Rubber-Based Composites

The use of nano composites in elastomer blends gives outstanding mechanical properties compared to the use of micro and macro composites, even with very low nano filler content. In this paper, we studied the influence of varying proportions of natural rubber (NR) and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) reinforced with nano silica on the mechanical and thermal characteristics of the rubber. Mechanical characterizations were carried out with hardness, tensile strength, elongation at break, tear strength, modulus and toughness. For thermal analyses, we used differential scanning calorimetry ( DSC) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). In most cases, the increase in the percentage of NBR with the presence of nano silica enhances hardness, modulus and toughness, however, it reduces tensile strength, tear strength and elongation at break. It was found that nano silica has a catalytic effect on the mixture, and NBR has a catalytic effect on the decomposition of NR.

Influence of Compound Modification of Oil Sands De-Oiled Asphalt and Polyphosphoric Acid on High- and Low-Temperature Performance of Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene-Modified Asphalt

Oil sands de-oiled asphalt (OSDOA) has become a bottleneck for refineries due to its enormous production and huge landfill costs. Applying OSDOA as a modifier is an effective way to reduce environmental pollution and disposal cost. In this study, the influences of OSDOA and polyphosphoric acid (PPA) compound modification on styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)-modified binder were investigated. The high-temperature rutting resistance, low-temperature anti-crack performance and fatigue resistance were obtained by dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR) test. Storage stability and microstructure were also investigated by storage test and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that the compound modification of OSDOA/PPA dramatically enhanced the deformation resistance of SBS-modified binder and reduced its low-temperature cracking resistance. The anti-fatigue performance was also decreased. Moreover, the combined effect of OSDOA and PPA could produce composite modified asphalt with excellent storage stability, which was verified by desirable fluorescence images. Furthermore, both physical and chemical interactions coexisted during the OSDOA/PPA compound modification process. Consequently, the optimal doses of OSDOA and PPA were determined to be 10 wt% and 1.0 wt%, considering of the balance between high- and low-temperature characteristics and storage stability of composite modified asphalt.
