Lignin as a bioactive polymer and heavy metal absorber- an overview

As a pulping and bio-refinery by-product with phenolic chemical structure, lignin indicated high potential as natural antioxidant activity, UV blocker, antibacterial and toxic material absorbent properties. Presence of phenolic hydroxyl groups in lignin structure plays the main role of its antioxidant activity. However, lignin antioxidant power can change depending on its other structural features and functional groups like ortho-methoxy groups, -OCH₃ groups, the α-CH₂ groups, the aliphatic carbonyl groups, and the size of π-conjugated systems. Lignin in mixture with synthetic polymers, improved their thermal stability. Lignin has high UV light absorbing potential in broad-spectrum (UVA, UVB). Adding 1-5% of lignin into hand cream indicated excellent range of sun protection factor (SPF) with more than 95% UV light absorption. Lignin also indicated strong UV light protection when applied in different transparent film and protect paint, oil, and varnish from UV degradation. Lignosulfonate and other modified lignin including chemically modification, nano-particles and lignin hydrogel indicated high potential as heavy metal absorber.

Study on the Effect of Ultraviolet Absorber UV-531 on the Performance of SBS-Modified Asphalt

Asphalt pavements at high altitudes are susceptible to aging and disease under prolonged action of UV light. To improve their anti-ultraviolet aging performance, UV-531/SBS-modified asphalts with UV-531 dopings of 0.4%, 0.7%, and 1.0% were prepared by the high-speed shear method, and the effect of UV-531 on the conventional performance of SBS-modified asphalt before aging was studied by needle penetration, softening point and 5 °C ductility tests. The high- and low-temperature rheological properties of UV-531/SBS-modified asphalt before and after aging were also analyzed by high temperature dynamic shear rheology test and low-temperature glass transition temperature test. Finally, the effect of UV-531 on the anti-aging performance of SBS-modified asphalt was evaluated by three methods, including rutting factor ratio, viscosity aging index, and infrared spectroscopy. The results show that with the increase of UV-531 doping, the needle penetration and 5 °C ductility show an increasing trend, but the effect on the softening point is small. The high temperature stability of SBS-modified asphalt is not much affected by the addition of UV-531, and the low-temperature stability is improved, and when 0.7% UV absorber is added, SBS-modified asphalt shows better low-temperature performance. The results of all three evaluation methods show that the addition of UV-531 significantly improved the anti-UV aging performance of SBS-modified asphalt, with the amount of 0.7% providing the asphalt with the best anti-UV aging performance. The results of the study can provide an important reference for improving the anti-ultraviolet aging performance of SBS-modified asphalt.

A novel class of xanthene dyes with chemically linked UV absorber molecule and their photophysical properties

In this paper, we prepared a new class of chemically linked UV absorber XU2 & XU3, and their photophysical, chemical properties and substrate durability were investigated. Spectroscopic behavior at various solvent and pH levels for this dye solution has been evaluated. Successfully designed an open ring form of xanthene moiety, linked a UV absorber to it, and made XU2 & XU3 that have shown good absorbance and emission band maxima at all solvents and pH mediums. Further, the found UV-Vis absorbance band maxima (λ_max), PL emission maxima (λ_em), molar extinction coefficient (ε_max) and Stokes shifts (ΔνST) when compared to commercially available dye 1. The synthesised XU2 & XU3 have shown brilliant results from exposed UV light at irradiation processing time, due to the light energy passes through the molecule by keto-enol tautomerisation between phenolic hydrogen and carbonyl carbon like a six-member ring. So it can be acted as radioless behaviour in the visible region, and it can relax the energy without any assistance. Hence, the UV absorber has protected the compound like a UV Resistance.

4D biofabrication via instantly generated graded hydrogel scaffolds

Formation of graded biomaterials to render shape-morphing scaffolds for 4D biofabrication holds great promise in fabrication of complex structures and the recapitulation of critical dynamics for tissue/organ regeneration. Here we describe a facile generation of an adjustable and robust gradient using a single- or multi-material one-step fabrication strategy for 4D biofabrication. By simply photocrosslinking a mixed solution of a photocrosslinkable polymer macromer, photoinitiator (PI), UV absorber and live cells, a cell-laden gradient hydrogel with pre-programmable deformation can be generated. Gradient formation was demonstrated in various polymers including poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), alginate, and gelatin derivatives using various UV absorbers that present overlap in UV spectrum with that of the PI UV absorbance spectrum. Moreover, this simple and effective method was used as a universal platform to integrate with other hydrogel-engineering techniques such as photomask-aided microfabrication, photo-patterning, ion-transfer printing, and 3D bioprinting to fabricate more advanced cell-laden scaffold structures. Lastly, proof-of-concept 4D tissue engineering was demonstrated in a study of 4D bone-like tissue formation. The strategy's simplicity along with its versatility paves a new way in solving the hurdle of achieving temporal shape changes in cell-laden single-component hydrogel scaffolds and may expedite the development of 4D biofabricated constructs for biological applications.

Polyester Fabric with Fluorescent Properties Using Microwave Technology for Anti-Counterfeiting Applications

The article presented concerns the application of fluorescein as a fluorescent material for anti-counterfeiting technology which will allow the labeling and identification of legitimate articles in the textile field. Fluorescein has been applied to polyester fabrics by microwave irradiation technique in the presence of a UV absorber. Thus, its presence in the textile substrate is detectable following an excitation at a specific wavelength belonging to the Ultra-violet zone, which makes this material very effective for tracking and detecting counterfeit articles. Fluorescent samples are characterized morphologically by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and quantitatively by optical spectroscopy such as reflectance and transmission measurements. The treated samples show under UV light a yellowish green emission with a slight yellow coloration of the polyester fiber. The UV absorber applied to the fluorescent solution improves the light resistance of the treated samples by 25%. Their addition to the bath can also ensure the production of a protective fabric against UV.

Human metabolism and kinetics of the UV absorber 2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4,6-di-tert-pentylphenol (UV 328) after oral administration

2-(2H-Benzotriazol-2-yl)-4,6-di-tert-pentylphenol (UV 328; CAS: 25973-55-1) is an ultraviolet light (UV) absorber which belongs to the class of hydroxy phenol benzotriazoles. Therefore, UV 328 is added to plastics and other polymers due to its photostability to prevent discoloration and prolong product stability which may result in an exposure of consumers. However, information about the toxic effects on humans and the human metabolism are still lacking. In the present study, human metabolism pathways of UV 328 and its elimination kinetics were explored. For that purpose, three healthy volunteers were orally exposed to a single dose of 0.3 mg UV 328/kg bodyweight. UV 328 and its metabolites were investigated in blood and urine samples collected until 48 and 72 h after exposure, respectively. Thereby, previously published analytical procedures were applied for the sample analysis using dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction and subsequent measurement via gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry with advanced electron ionization. UV 328 was found to be oxidized at its alkyl side chains leading to the formation of hydroxy and/or oxo function with maximum blood concentrations at 8–10 h after exposure for UV 328-6/3-OH, UV 328-4/3-OH and UV 328-4/3-CO. In contrast, a plateau for UV 328-4/3-CO-6/3-OH levels was reached around 10 h post-dosage. The highest blood levels were found for native UV 328 at 8 h after ingestion. Furthermore, biphasic elimination kinetics in blood were revealed for almost all detected metabolites. UV 328 and its metabolites did not occur in blood as conjugates. The renal elimination kinetics were very similar with the kinetics in blood. However, the prominence of the metabolites in urine was somewhat different compared to blood. In contrast, mostly conjugated metabolites occurred for renal elimination. In urine, UV 328-4/3-CO-6/3-OH was found to be the most dominant urinary biomarker followed by UV 328-6/3-OH and UV 328-4/3-OH. In total, approximately 0.1% of the orally administered dose was recovered in urine within 72 h. Although high levels of UV 328 in blood proved good resorption and high systemic availability of the substance in the human body, the urine results revealed a rather low quantitative metabolism and urinary excretion rate. Consequently, biliary excretion as part of the enterohepatic cycle and elimination via feces are assumed to be the preferred pathways instead of renal elimination.

Combinations of photoinitiator and UV absorber for cell-based digital light processing (DLP) bioprinting

Digital light processing (DLP) bioprinting, which provides predominant speed, resolution, and adaptability for fabricating complex cell-laden three-dimensional (3D) structures, requires a combination of photoinitiator (PI) and UV absorber (UA) that plays critical roles during the photo-polymerization of bioinks. However, the PI and UA combination has not been highlighted for cell-based DLP bioprinting. In this study, the most used PIs and UAs in cell-based bioprinting were compared to optimize a combination that can ensure the maximum DLP printability, while maintaining the cellular activities during the process. The crosslinking time and printability of PIs were assessed, which are critical in minimizing the cell damage by the UV exposure during the fabrication process. On the other hand, the UAs were evaluated based on their ability to prevent the over-curing of layers beyond the focal layer and the scattering of light, which are required for the desirable crosslinking of a hydrogel and high resolution (25-50µms) to create a complex 3D cell-laden construct. Lastly, the cytotoxicity of PIs and UAs was assessed by measuring the cellular activity of 2D cultured and 3D bioprinted cells. The optimized PI and UA combination provided high initial cell viability (>90%) for up to 14 days in culture and could fabricate complex 3D structures like a perfusable heart-shaped construct with open vesicles and atriums. This combination can provide a potential starting condition when preparing the bioink for the cell-based DLP bioprinting in tissue engineering applications.

Dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) and external real matrix calibration for the determination of the UV absorber 2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4,6-di-tert-pentylphenol (UV 328) and its metabolites in human blood

2-(2H-Benzotriazol-2-yl)-4,6-di-tert-pentylphenol (UV 328; CAS: 25973-55-1) is a benzotriazole ultraviolet light (BUV) absorber which is applied to plastics and other organic substances to prevent discoloration and enhance product stability. Therefore, UV 328 is frequently used as a plastic additive and may lead to an exposure of consumers. For a reliable assessment of UV 328 metabolism, an analytical method applying dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) followed by gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry and advanced electron ionization was developed which allows the determination of UV 328 and six of its metabolites in human whole blood. Sample preparation was optimized with respect to DLLME parameters. A critical aspect of the procedure was the application of spiked human blood for calibration, which proved to be essential for achieving accurate results. Validation of the method resulted in limits of detection of 0.1 μg/L for all analytes. Variation coefficients ranged from 2 to 9% for intraday precision and from 3 to 11% for interday precision. Furthermore, relative recovery rates between 80 and 100% were calculated. Afterwards, the procedure was successfully applied to blood samples collected from a volunteer orally exposed to a single dose of UV 328. The method proved to be highly sensitive, repeatable and robust for all compounds and may further be used for studies to elucidate the human metabolism and kinetics of UV 328 and for biomonitoring of specific, environmental and occupational exposure to this UV stabilizer.

Oxidative phase I metabolism of the UV absorber 2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4,6-di-tert-pentylphenol (UV 328) in an in vitro model with human liver microsomes

2-(2H-Benzotriazol-2-yl)-4,6-di-tert-pentylphenol (UV 328, CAS: 25973-55-1) is an ultraviolet light (UV) absorber which is used as an additive for plastics and other polymeric substances to prevent the host material from light induced degradation reactions. However, no information about human exposure, metabolism and kinetics is available for this substance so far. Therefore, in vitro experiments with human liver microsomes were performed to derive oxidative phase I metabolites of UV 328 in an explorative approach using liquid-chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Initially, a suspect screening mode was applied to the incubated samples. Six metabolites with hydroxy or oxo groups as well as a metabolite carrying both hydroxy and carbonyl moieties at the alkyl side chains were postulated and custom synthesized as reference standards. Afterwards, the results were verified in a target screening approach. Thereby, five of the six investigated analyte structures were confirmed. Quantitative estimations of the generated transformation products revealed 2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-6-(3-hydroxy-2-methylbutan-2-yl)-4-(tert-pentyl)phenol (UV 328-6/3-OH), 2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-(3-hydroxy-2-methylbutan-2-yl)-6-(tert-pentyl)phenol (UV 328-4/3-OH) and 2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-(2-methylbutan-3-on-2-yl)-6-(3-hydroxy-2-methylbutan-2-yl)phenol (UV 328-4/3-CO-6/3-OH) as most promising parameters. In summary, oxidation of both alkyl side chains at the phenol moiety was proven, but no metabolic transformations at the benzotriazole moiety were observed.

The Effects of UV Light on the Chemical and Mechanical Properties of a Transparent Epoxy-Diamine System in the Presence of an Organic UV Absorber

Despite several excellent properties including low shrinkage, good chemical resistance, curable at low temperatures and the absence of byproducts or volatiles, epoxy resins are susceptible to ultra violet (UV) damage and their durability is reduced substantially when exposed to outdoor environments. To overcome this drawback, UV absorbers have been usually used to decrease the rate of UV degradation. In this present study, the effects of UV light on the chemical, mechanical and physical properties of cured epoxy structure, as well as the effect of an organic UV absorber, Tinuvin 1130, on the epoxy properties were investigated. Chemical changes in a cured epoxy system as a result of the presence and absence of Tinuvin 1130 were determined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses. The effect of Tinuvin 1130 on the surface morphology of the epoxy systems was also investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging. Additionally, the glass transition temperatures (T_g) before and during UV radiation were measured. After an 800 h UV radiation, mechanical test results revealed that the lack of the UV absorber can lead to a ~30% reduction in tensile strength. However, in the presence of Tinuvin 1130, the tensile strength was reduced only by ~11%. It was hypothesized that the use of Tinuvin 1130, as an organic UV absorber in the epoxy-amine system, could decrease the undesirable effects, arising from exposure to UV light.

Photostabilizing Efficiency of PVC in the Presence of Schiff Bases as Photostabilizers

The photostabilization of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) films by Schiff bases was investigated. Polyvinyl chloride films containing 0.5 wt % Schiff bases were produced using the same casting method as that used for additive-free PVC films from tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvent. The photostabilization activities of these compounds were determined by monitoring the carbonyl, polyene and hydroxyl indices with irradiation time. The changes in viscosity average molecular weight of PVC with irradiation time were also monitored using THF as a solvent. The quantum yield of chain scission (Φcs) for the studied complexes in PVC was estimated to range between 4.72 and 8.99 × 10(-8). According to the experimental results, several mechanisms were suggested, depending on the structure of the additive. Ultra violet (UV) absorption, peroxide decomposition and radical scavenging were suggested as the photostabilizing mechanisms.

In vitro-assessment of putative antiprogestin activities of phytochemicals and synthetic UV absorbers in human endometrial Ishikawa cells

Critical steps of embryo implantation are controlled by progesterone. These processes can be interrupted by progesterone receptor (PR) antagonists, e.g. drugs used for abortion. Antiprogestin effects induced by natural compounds and environmental chemicals have been rarely addressed. In our in vitro study, we investigated putative antiprogestin activities of the plant compounds apigenin (API) and trans-ferulic acid (t-FA) as well as the UV absorbers octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC) and 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC). They were compared with the selective progesterone receptor modulators (SPRMs) mifepristone (RU486) and ulipristal acetate (UPA) as well as the full PR-antagonist ZK137316. Effects of test compounds in combination with progesterone on the progesterone-sensitive target gene estrogen sulfotransferase (SULT1E1) were characterized by sigmoidal concentration-response curves obtained by RT-qPCR. The agonistic effect of progesterone on SULT1E1 mRNA levels was concentration-dependently antagonized by RU486, UPA and ZK137316 as well as, with lower potency, apigenin. t-FA, OMC and 4-MBC had no effect on SULT1E1 mRNA levels. We demonstrated that apigenin, although at higher concentrations, exerts a similar effect as the well-characterized SPRMs RU486 and UPA or the progesterone antagonist ZK137316 in this model. Our endometrium-specific Ishikawa cell assay is a useful complement to artificial transactivation assays for the identification of environmental substances with antiprogestin activities.

Degradation and mineralization of organic UV absorber compound 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA) using UV-254nm/H2O2

Various studies have revealed the non-biodegradable and endocrine disrupting properties of sulfonated organic UV absorbers, directing people's attention toward their risks on ecological and human health and hence their removal from water. In this study, UV-254nm/H2O2 advanced oxidation process (AOP) was investigated for degrading a model UV absorber compound 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA) and a structurally similar compound 1H-benzimidazole-2-sulfonic acid (BSA), with a specific focus on their mineralization. At 4.0mM [H2O2]0, a complete removal of 40.0μM parent PBSA and 25% decrease in TOC were achieved with 190min of UV irradiation; SO4(2-) was formed and reached its maximum level while the release of nitrogen as NH4(+) was much lower (around 50%) at 190min. Sulfate removal was strongly enhanced by increasing [H2O2]0 in the range of 0-4.0mM, with slight inhibition in 4.0-12.0mM. Faster and earlier ammonia formation was observed at higher [H2O2]0. The presence of Br(-) slowed down the degradation and mineralization of both compounds while a negligible effect on the degradation was observed in the presence of Cl(-). Our study provides important technical and fundamental results on the HO based degradation and mineralization of SO3H and N-containing UV absorber compounds.

Inclusion complexes of β-cyclodextrin-dinitrocompounds as UV absorber for ballpoint pen ink

2,4-Dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP), 2,4-dinitroaniline (2,4-DNA), 2,6-dinitroaniline (2,6-DNA) and 2,6-dinitrobenzoic acid (2,6-DNB) has appeared for the UV absorption bands in different wavelength region below 400 nm, a combination of these dinitro aromatic compounds gave the broad absorption spectra within the UV region. The absorption intensities have been increased by preparation of the inclusion complex of dinitro compounds with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). Prepared inclusion complexes are used to improve the UV protection properties of the ball point pen ink against photo degradation. The formation of solid inclusion complexes was characterized by FT-IR, and (1)H NMR spectroscopy. The UV protecting properties of these inclusion complexes were calculated their sun protection factor (SPF) is also discussed. The stability of the ballpoint pen ink has been confirmed by UV-Visible spectroscopic method.
