Abstract
Cyanidin-3-O-galactoside (Cy3-gal) is the most widespread anthocyanin that has been found to be applicable to nutraceutical and pharmaceutical ingredients. Nevertheless, the process of separation and purification, susceptibilities to heat, and pH inactivation present some limitations. In the present study, natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) with an ultrasonic-assisted extraction method were briefly studied, and the recovery of Cy3-gal from Rhododendron arboreum was highlighted. The NADES, consisting of choline chloride and oxalic acid (1:1), was screened out as an extractant, and single-factor experiments combined with a two-site kinetic model were employed to describe the extraction process. Further, the work investigated ultrasound-assisted adsorption/desorption to efficiently purify Cy3-gal using macroporous resins. The optimal extraction conditions to attain maximum Cy3-gal yield was 30% water in a 50:1 (mL/g) solvent-to-sample ratio, 11.25 W/cm3 acoustic density, and 50% duty cycle for 16 min of extraction time. Under these conditions, the results revealed 23.07 ± 0.14 mg/g of Cy3-gal, two-fold higher than the traditional solvents. Furthermore, of the different resins used, Amberlite XAD-7HP showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher adsorption/desorption capacities (12.82 ± 0.18 mg/g and 10.97 ± 0.173 mg/g) and recovery (48.41 ± 0.76%) percent over other adsorbents. Experiments on the degrading behavior (40-80 °C) of the recovered Cy3-gal were performed over time, and the first-order kinetic model better explained the obtained data. In conclusion, the study asserts the use of ultrasonication with NADES and XAD-7HP resin for the improved purification of Cy3-gal from the crude extract.

Abstract
This study investigates the optimization of fabric dyeing using natural dyes extracted from Clitoria ternatea, Cudrania javanensis, and Hibiscus sabdarifa by enhancing the mordanting process with citric acid. The principle of adding citric acid is as a crosslinker agent between cotton fabric and dye through an esterification reaction. A central composite design (CCD) of the response surface methodology (RSM) is employed to optimize parameters. Three mordanting variations and dyeing parameters, such as temperature and time, are considered. Results indicate that pre-mordanting yields superior outcomes, with optimal temperature and time at 65 °C and 82 min, respectively. Cotton fabric dyed with Cudrania javanensis and citric acid exhibits the highest color durability. This study successfully demonstrates the effectiveness of pre-mordanting, meta-mordanting, and post-mordanting methods with optimized conditions for achieving optimal coloring outcomes, particularly highlighting the efficacy of citric acid as a crosslinking agent.

Abstract
In this study, biodegradable active films were prepared from potato starch and polyvinyl alcohol at different proportions, mixed with acetone extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (HS) and using glycerol as a plasticizer. Functional properties, antimicrobial, and antioxidant capacity were evaluated. Potato starch films with a proportion of polyvinyl alcohol up to 50% and HS extract had significant antioxidant capacity and antibacterial effect against most of the analyzed strains. Adding polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and HS extract improved the mechanical performance and reduced water vapor permeability of the materials. The active biobased films with HS extract presented good physicochemical, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. These materials are considered as suitable for food packaging, and the active compounds in the roselle extract are a natural antibacterial option for the food area. The materials based entirely on biodegradable products are an excellent alternative when developing and marketing biobased materials, minimizing the environmental impact of food packaging.

Abstract
Natural phytochemicals are well known to protect against numerous metabolic disorders. Anthocyanins are vacuolar pigments belonging to the parent class of flavonoids. They are well known for their potent antioxidant and gut microbiome-modulating properties, primarily responsible for minimizing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and several other diseases associated with metabolic syndromes. Berries are the primary source of anthocyanin in the diet. The color and stability of anthocyanins are substantially influenced by external environmental conditions, constraining their applications in foods. Furthermore, the significantly low bioavailability of anthocyanins greatly diminishes the extent of the actual health benefits linked to these bioactive compounds. Multiple strategies have been successfully developed and utilized to enhance the stability and bioavailability of anthocyanins. This review provides a comprehensive view of the recent advancements in chemistry, biosynthesis, dietary sources, stabilization, bioavailability, industrial applications, and health benefits of anthocyanins. Finally, we summarize the prospects and challenges of applications of anthocyanin in foods.

Abstract
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was blended with high amylose starch (HAS) at a ratio of 3:1, and reinforced with montmorillonite (MMT K10) at different concentrations (1, 2, 5, and 7 % w/w of polymers) and anthocyanins (ANT) to develop an active and smart packaging film. MMT addition enhanced the film's mechanical, barrier, thermal, and water resistance properties. Incorporating ANT extracted from roselle calyx into the optimal nanocomposite film (MMT/PVA-HAS II) increased the films' antioxidant, pH-response, and antibacterial properties. FTIR, XRD, and SEM confirmed the intermolecular interactions and even distribution of ANT and MMT in the film matrix. Release rate of ANT was dependent on type of simulant, with higher rate in aqueous solutions compared to alcoholic/fatty food simulants, and cytotoxicity evaluation proved safety of films for food packaging applications. Storage experiments confirmed the potential applicability of the novel halochromic smart film as a promising candidate for monitoring chicken spoilage under abusive storage conditions.

Abstract
Roselle is rich in an extensive diversity of beneficial substances, including phenolic acids, amino acids, anthocyanins, vitamins, and flavonoids. Herein, the chemical constituents in Roselle extract (RE) were identified by UPLC-DAD-QTOF-MS. Besides, its inhibitory effects on three digestive enzymes, i.e. α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and pancreatic lipase, were investigated in both in vitro and in vivo. Thirty-three constituents including hibiscus acid, 18 phenolic acids, 2 anthocyanins and 12 flavonoids were identified. The anthocyanins content in RE was 21.44 ± 0.68 %, while the contents of chlorogenic acids, rutin and quercetin were 17.76 ± 2.28 %, 0.31 ± 0.01 % and 0.32 ± 0.01 %, respectively. RE inhibited pancreatic lipase in a non-competitive way with an IC50 value of 0.84 mg/mL. Besides, it demonstrated a mixed-type inhibition on both α-glucosidase and α-amylase with IC50 values of 0.59 mg/mL and 1.93 mg/mL, respectively. Fluorescence quenching assays confirmed the binding of RE to the enzyme proteins. Furthermore, rats pre-treated with RE at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg body weight (bwt) exhibited significant reductions in fat absorption and improvements in fat excretion through feces. Additionally, the in vivo study revealed that RE was effective in suppressing the increase of blood glucose after starch consumption, while its effects on maltose and sucrose consumption were relatively weak.

Abstract
Due to the high content of phenolics and anthocyanins of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. tea and the sensibility of these bioactive compounds, this work aimed to optimize the obtention of microcapsules by spray-drying, using inulin as a carrier agent. Using a Box-Behnken Design, the effects of inlet temperature (130, 150, and 170 °C), feed flow rate (5, 10, and 15 mL min-1), and inulin concentration (5, 10, and 15 g L-1) were evaluated. It was possible to obtain pale-rose, slightly sweet instant powders with good total polyphenol content (1.12 mgGAE g-1) and anthocyanins encapsulation efficiency (32.3-60.6%), besides moisture (4.61-17.79%) and water activity (0.221-0.501), indicating physico-chemical and microbiological stability of the microcapsules. A simultaneous optimization with the desirability function was performed to maximize all the response variables analyzed, and the optimum conditions of 5 g L-1 of inulin, inlet temperature of 170 °C, and feed flow rate of 83 mL min-1 were found.

Abstract
Blueberries are rich in phenolic compounds including anthocyanins which are closely related to biological health functions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antioxidant activity of blueberry anthocyanins extracted from 'Brightwell' rabbiteye blueberries in mice. After one week of adaptation, C57BL/6J healthy male mice were divided into different groups that were administered with 100, 400, or 800 mg/kg blueberry anthocyanin extract (BAE), and sacrificed at different time points (0.1, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, or 12 h). The plasma, eyeball, intestine, liver, and adipose tissues were collected to compare their antioxidant activity, including total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and glutathione-peroxidase (GSH-PX/GPX) content, and the oxidative stress marker malondialdehyde (MDA) level. The results showed that blueberry anthocyanins had positive concentration-dependent antioxidant activity in vivo. The greater the concentration of BAE, the higher the T-AOC value, but the lower the MDA level. The enzyme activity of SOD, the content of GSH-PX, and messenger RNA (mRNA) levels of Cu,Zn-SOD, Mn-SOD, and GPX all confirmed that BAE played an antioxidant role after digestion in mice by improving their antioxidant defense. The in vivo antioxidant activity of BAE indicated that blueberry anthocyanins could be developed into functional foods or nutraceuticals with the aim of preventing or treating oxidative stress-related diseases.

Abstract
Aqueous extracts from Posidonia oceanica's green and brown (beached) leaves and rhizomes were prepared, submitted to phenolic compound and proteomic analysis, and examined for their potential cytotoxic effect on HepG2 liver cancer cells in culture. The chosen endpoints related to survival and death were cell viability and locomotory behavior, cell-cycle analysis, apoptosis and autophagy, mitochondrial membrane polarization, and cell redox state. Here, we show that 24 h exposure to both green-leaf- and rhizome-derived extracts decreased tumor cell number in a dose-response manner, with a mean half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) estimated at 83 and 11.5 μg of dry extract/mL, respectively. Exposure to the IC50 of the extracts appeared to inhibit cell motility and long-term cell replicating capacity, with a more pronounced effect exerted by the rhizome-derived preparation. The underlying death-promoting mechanisms identified involved the down-regulation of autophagy, the onset of apoptosis, the decrease in the generation of reactive oxygen species, and the dissipation of mitochondrial transmembrane potential, although, at the molecular level, the two extracts appeared to elicit partially differentiating effects, conceivably due to their diverse composition. In conclusion, P. oceanica extracts merit further investigation to develop novel promising prevention and/or treatment agents, as well as beneficial supplements for the formulation of functional foods and food-packaging material with antioxidant and anticancer properties.

Abstract
Anthocyanins from grape peel extract have several biological properties and can act as a natural colorant and antioxidant agent. However, these compounds are susceptible to degradation by light, oxygen, temperature, and the gastrointestinal tract. Thus, this study produced microstructured lipid microparticles (MLMs) containing anthocyanins by the spray chilling technique and evaluated the particle stability. trans-free fully hydrogenated palm oil (FHPO) and palm oil (PO) were used as encapsulating materials in the ratios 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40, and 50:50, respectively. The concentration of grape peel extract was 40 % (w/w) in relation to the encapsulating materials. The microparticles were evaluated for thermal behavior by DSC, polymorphism, FTIR, size distribution and particle diameter, bulk density, tapped density, flow properties, morphology, phenolic compounds content, antioxidant capacity, and retention of anthocyanins. Furthermore, the storage stability of the microparticles was investigated at different temperatures (-18, 4, and 25 °C), and the anthocyanins retention capacity, kinetic parameters (half-life time and degradation constant rate), total color difference, and visual aspects were evaluated during 90 days of storage. The resistance of MLMs to the gastrointestinal tract was also evaluated. In general, higher FHPO concentrations increased the thermal resistance of the MLMs and both showed defined peaks of β' and β forms. The FTIR analysis showed that the MLMs preserved the original forms of their constituent materials even after atomization, with interactions between them. The increase in the PO concentration directly affected the increased mean particle diameter, agglomeration, and cohesiveness, as well as lower bulk density, tapped density, and flowability. The retention of anthocyanins in MLMs ranged from 81.5 to 61.3 % and was influenced by the particle size, with a better result observed for the treatment MLM_90:10. The same behavior was observed for the phenolic compounds content (1443.1-1247.2 mg GAE/100 g) and antioxidant capacity (1739.8-1660.6 mg TEAC/100 g). During the storage, MLMs made with FHPO to PO ratios of 80:20, 70:30, and 60:40 showed the highest stability for anthocyanin retention and color changes at the three temperatures (- 18 °C, 4 °C, and 25 °C). The gastrointestinal simulation in vitro revealed that all treatments were resistant to gastric phase and maintained a maximum and controlled release in the intestinal phase, demonstrating that FHPO together with PO are effective to protect anthocyanins during gastric digestion, and can improve the bioavailability of this compound in the human organism. Thus, the spray chilling technique may be a promising alternative for the production of anthocyanins-loaded microstructured lipid microparticles with functional properties for various technological applications.

Recovery of Anthocyanins from Hibiscus sabdariffa L. Using a Combination of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction and Subcritical Water Extraction. Processes (Basel) 2023. Abstract
Anthocyanins are one of the bioactive compounds in roselle that has many medicinal proposes. Anthocyanins are placed in the inner part of the roselle; therefore, combinations of two methods were applied to extract the anthocyanins. The first stage is employing supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO2) to break the particle surface or outer layer of the roselle based on the total phenolic compounds (TPC) recovery, and the second step was to apply subcritical water extraction (SWE) for the extraction of anthocyanins. The objective is to determine the best conditions to obtain high yields of total anthocyanins compounds (TAC) from the roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) by employing a combination of ScCO2 and SWE. The optimal conditions of ScCO2 (first stage) were 19.13 MPa, 60 °C, and 4.31 mL/min, yielding 18.20%, and 80.34 mg/100 g TPC, respectively. The optimum conditions of SWE (second stage) were 9.48 MPa, 137 °C, and 6.14 mL/min, yielding 86.11% and 1224.61 mg/100 g TAC, respectively. The application of integrated ScCO2 and SWE proved successful in achieving high anthocyanins production and yield as compared to previous extraction methods. This approach may be used to extract the roselle with a greater anthocyanin’s concentration than the prior method.

Abstract
Many tannase-based industrial applications are currently being developed to successfully break down tannins in teas and juices. However, so far, no study has demonstrated the potential application of tannase to reduce tannin levels in Hibiscus sabdariffa tea. The D-optimal design was utilized to predict the optimal conditions for maximizing anthocyanins and decreasing tannin content in Hibiscus tea. Then, the effects of Penicillium commune tannase were evaluated by examining the physicochemical parameters and α-amylase inhibitory action of untreated and treated Hibiscus tea, as well as quantifying catechin content changes using HPLC. Following treatment with tannase, the esterified catechins decreased by 8.91%, while the non-esterified catechins increased by 19.76%. Additionally, tannase significantly raised the total phenolic compounds by 8.6%. In contrast, the α-amylase inhibiting activity of Hibiscus tea decreased by ≈28%. As a novel member of the tea family, tannase offers an excellent means of conditionally producing low-astringency Hibiscus tea.

Abstract
Colorimetric films incorporated with anthocyanins as an indicator for freshness monitoring have aroused growing interest recently. The pH-sensing colorimetric film were developed based on pectin (HM), containing aqueous hibiscus extract microparticles (HAE). HAE microparticles were obtained by spray drying with different wall materials (Inulin -IN, maltodextrin- MD and their combination). The films were obtained on large scale by continuous casting. These films were characterized for physicochemical analysis, morphological structure, thermal and barrier properties, antioxidant activity, and color change at different pH. The addition of HAE microparticles caused relevant changes to HM-based films, such as in mechanical behavior and improved barrier property (11-22% WVTR reduction) depending on the type of wall material used and the concentration added. It was verified with the thermal stability of films, with a slight increase being observed. The color variation of smart films was entirely pH-dependent. Overall, the proposed color indicator films showed unique features and functionalities and could be used as an alternative natural pH indicator in smart packaging systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The reduced levels of acetylcholine and dopamine lead to Alzheimer's disease AD and Parkinson disease PD, respectively, due to the action of cholinesterase and monoamine oxidase B. METHODS Therapeutic options for AD and PD involve respective cholinergic and monoaminergic inhibitors, and considering the adverse outcomes of cholinergic- and monoaminergic- inhibitory therapeutics, phytoconstituents may be promising alternatives. Reports have shown that different extracts of the calyx of Hibiscus sabdariffa exhibit anticholinesterase and monoamine oxidase B inhibitory properties with potential to delay and prevent the development of AD and PD. However, there is limited knowledge on the multitarget cholinergic and monoaminergic inhibitory activities of individual compounds in this plant. Computational methods were used to identify the specific compounds responsible for the observed cholinergic and monoaminergic inhibitory activities of the H. sabdariffa calyx extracts. RESULTS Results confirm that three flavonoids: delphinidin-3-sambubioside, kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside and quercetin-3-rutinoside showed strong binding affinity with acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase and monoamine oxidase B while the observed stability of the ligands-enzymes complexes over the MD simulation time suggests their cholinergic and monoaminergic inhibitory properties. CONCLUSION The three flavonoids may be responsible for the reported anticholinergic and monoaminergic inhibitory potentials of H. sabdariffa extracts and could be enlisted as multi-target inhibitory agents for cholinesterases and monoamine oxidase B.

Abstract
Anthocyanins have great health benefits, especially malvidin. Vitis amurensis Rupr are rich in malvidin, and malvidin-3-O-glucoside (Mv3G) monomer is the most abundant. However, natural anthocyanins are unstable, which limits their wide application in the food field. Soybean insoluble dietary fiber (SIDF) has high stability, and it can be used as an inert substrate to construct a stable system, which may improve the stability of anthocyanins. The optimal condition to construct a stable system of SIDF and Mv3G at pH 3.0 was determined by an orthogonal experiment. The results indicated that SIDF effectively improved the stability of Mv3G under different pH values (1.0~7.0), high temperature (100 °C for 100 min), and sunlight (20 ± 2 °C for 30 d) conditions. The absorption peak intensity of the UV–VIS spectrum of SIDF-Mv3G was enhanced, which indicated that there was interaction between SIDF and Mv3G. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses revealed that the -OH stretching vibration peak of SIDF-Mv3G was changed, which indicated that the interaction between SIDF and Mv3G was due to hydrogen bonding. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the crystalline morphology of SIDF was opened, which was combined with Mv3G, and SIDF made Mv3G change to a more stable state. Scanning electron microscope analysis showed that SIDF and Mv3G were closely combined to form an inclusion complex. Overall, this study provides valuable information for enhancing the color stability of anthocyanins, which will further expand the application of anthocyanins in the food field.

Abstract
The development of colorectal cancer involves some morphological changes, and in the initial stage, pre-neoplastic lesions called aberrant crypt foci (ACF) appear. Thus, an intervention with sources of bioactive compounds such as Hibiscus sabdariffa L., rich in phenolic compounds and anthocyanins, could attenuate the risk of developing these lesions due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative properties. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of 5% and 10% supplementation of dehydrated H. sabdariffa calyces (DHSC) during the development of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine-induced preneoplastic lesions in male BALB/c mice. The characterization of DHSC was carried out. The in vivo experiment lasted 12 weeks, and the animals were randomly divided into 3 experimental groups: the control group (CON) and the supplemented groups with 5% DHSC and 10% DHSC. The activities of liver enzymes catalase and superoxide dismutase were determined. In addition, ACF, short chain fatty acids (SCFA), presence of inflammatory infiltrates, goblet cells and leukocytes in the colonic mucosa were quantified. There was a significant reduction in ACF and the presence of inflammatory infiltrates in the colon of animals in groups 5DHSC and 10DHSC. In addition, the 10DHSC group showed an increase in the activity of the catalse enzyme, in the production of butyrate and in the presence of NK cells in the colon, in addition to more hypertrophied goblet cells. Based on these findings, it is suggested that DHSC supplementation may be recommended to attenuate cellular responses in the early stage of preneoplastic lesions.

Abstract
Herbal extracts have been widely used by consumers for food fortification and medical purposes worldwide and are focused in traditional medicine in recent years. At this study, we aimed to examine the antimicrobial, antioxidant and sensory characteristics of ice creams fortified with different combinations of Hibiscus sabdariffa and Camellia synensis determined by Design of Experiments software. Levels of 10-100 and 40-400 mg/kg for Hibiscus sabdariffa and Camellia synensis extracts, respectively, were selected and experiments were conducted by central composite design. Generally, 13 runs were introduced by the software and followed in laboratory for analysis. Antimicrobial activity was studied against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as indicators of gram negative and gram positive bacteria. Results showed that all combinations were active against both bacteria but Staphylococcus aureus was more sensitive than Escherichia coli. Importantly, Camellia synensis was more effective than Hibiscus sabdariffa in both antimicrobial and antioxidant experiments but sensory panelists selected the sample containing lowest concentrations of both extracts. However, frequent consumption of low-dose fortified dairies with Hibiscus sabdariffa and Camellia synensis could be helpful for consumers interested in functional foods.

Abstract
Iron deposition in the brain begins early in multiple sclerosis (MS) and continues unabated. Ferrous iron is toxic to neurons, yet the therapies used in MS do not counter iron neurotoxicity. Extracts of Hibiscus sabdariffa (HS) are used in many cultures for medicinal purposes. We collected a distinct HS extract and found that it abolished the killing of neurons by iron in culture; medications used in MS were ineffective when similarly tested. Neuroprotection by HS was not due to iron chelation or anthocyanin content. In free radical scavenging assays, HS was equipotent to alpha lipoic acid, an anti-oxidant being tested in MS. However, alpha lipoic acid was only modestly protective against iron-mediated killing. Moreover, a subfraction of HS without radical scavenging activity negated iron toxicity, whereas a commercial hibiscus preparation with anti-oxidant activity could not. The idea that HS might have altered properties within neurons to confer neuroprotection is supported by its amelioration of toxicity caused by other toxins: beta-amyloid, rotenone and staurosporine. Finally, in a mouse model of MS, HS reduced disability scores and ameliorated the loss of axons in the spinal cord. HS holds therapeutic potential to counter iron neurotoxicity, an unmet need that drives the progression of disability in MS.

Abstract
The genus Hibiscus includes more than 250 species, and many studies showed that these plants contain bioactive compounds with technological potential to be used in the development of functional foods. However, the instability of these compounds during typical food processing conditions, such as exposure to high temperatures, pH changes and presence of light and oxygen have stimulated the use of encapsulation techniques to increase their stability and applicability. Among the existing Hibiscus species, only H. sabdariffa, H. cannabinus, and H. acetosella have been investigated in encapsulation studies, being spray drying the most common method approached. Considering the high technological potential offered by the incorporation of encapsulated bioactive compounds from plants of the genus Hibiscus in food formulations, this review discusses key information of selected encapsulation techniques, which represents promising alternatives to increase food systems' stability and stimulate the design of new functional foods. Relevant gaps in the literature were also noticed, mainly the lack of systematic studies regarding the composition of bioactive compounds after encapsulation, instead of total determinations, and biological activities in different analytical systems, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties as well as bioaccessibility and bioavailability.

Abstract
Anthocyanins (ACNs) are notable hydrophilic compounds that belong to the flavonoid family, which are available in plants. They have excellent antioxidants, anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer activity, and so on. Furthermore, ACNs can be used as a natural dye in the food industry (food colorant). On the other hand, the stability of ACNs can be affected by processing and storage conditions, for example, pH, temperature, light, oxygen, enzymes, and so on. These factors further reduce the bioavailability (BA) and biological efficacy of ACNs, as well as limit ACNs application in both food and pharmaceutics field. The stability and BA of ACNs can be improved via loading them in encapsulation systems including nanoemulsions, liposomes, niosomes, biopolymer-based nanoparticles, nanogel, complex coacervates, and tocosomes. Among all systems, biopolymer-based nanoparticles, nanohydrogels, and complex coacervates are comparatively suitable for improving the stability and BA of ACNs. These three systems have excellent functional properties such as high encapsulation efficiency and well-stable against unfavorable conditions. Furthermore, these carrier systems can be used for coating of other encapsulation systems (such as liposome). Additionally, tocosomes are a new system that can be used for encapsulating ACNs. ACNs-loaded encapsulation systems can improve the stability and BA of ACNs. However, further studies regarding stability, BA, and in vivo work of ACNs-loaded micro/nano-encapsulation systems could shed a light to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy including physicochemical stability, target mechanisms, cellular internalization, and release kinetics.

Abstract
Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx (HS) water decoction extract is a commonly consumed beverage with various pharmacological properties. This systematic review examines the possible effect of HS intake on immune mediators. The Scopus and PUBMED databases were searched for all human and animal studies that investigated the effect of HS administration on immune related biomarkers. For each of the immune biomarkers, the mean, standard deviation and number of subjects were extracted for both the HS treated and untreated group. These values were used in the computation of standardized mean difference (SMD). Statistical analysis and forest plot were done with R statistical software (version 3.6.1). Twenty seven (27) studies met the eligibility criteria. Twenty two (22) of the studies were used for the meta-analysis which included a total of 1211 subjects. The meta-analysis showed that HS administration significantly lowered the levels of TNF-α (n=10; pooled SMD: -1.55; 95% CI: -2.43, -0.67; P < 0.01), IL-6 (n=11; pooled SMD:-1.09; 95% CI: -1.77, -0.40; P < 0.01), IL-1β (n=7; pooled SMD:-0.62; 95% CI: -1.25, 0.00; P = 0.05), Edema formation (n=4; pooled SMD: -2.29; 95% CI: -4.47, -0.11; P = 0.04), Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein -1 (n=4; pooled SMD: -1.17; 95% CI: -1.78, -0.57; P < 0.01) and Angiotensin converting enzyme cascade (n=6; pooled SMD: -0.91; 95% CI: -1.57, -0.25; P < 0.01). The levels of IL-10 (n=4; pooled SMD: -0.38; 95% CI: -1.67, 0.91; P = 0.56), Interleukin 8 (n=2; pooled SMD:-0.12; 95% CI: -0.76, 0.51; P = 0.71), iNOS (n=2; pooled SMD:-0.69; 95% CI: -1.60, 0.23 P = 0.14) and C- Reactive Protein (n=4; pooled SMD: 0.05; 95% CI: -0.26, 0.36; P = 0.75), were not significantly changed by HS administration. Some of the results had high statistical heterogeneity. HS may be promising in the management of disorders involving hyperactive immune system or chronic inflammation.

Abstract
Edible flowers have been widely consumed for ages until now. The attractive colors and shapes, exotic aroma, and delightful taste make edible flowers very easy to attain. Moreover, they also provide health benefits for consumers due to the unique composition and concentration of antioxidant compounds in the matrices. Knowing the bioactive compounds and their functional properties from edible flowers is necessary to diversify the usage and reach broader consumers. Therefore, this reported review could be useful for functional product development, engaging the discussed edible flowers. We present a comprehensive review of edible flower composition and the functional properties of their antioxidant compounds, mainly phenolics.

Abstract
Red mature calyces of Hibiscus sabdariffa were collected from 16 different locations in Meghalaya, India. Samples were processed using shade drying (SD) and tray drying (TD). NMR spectroscopy was used to assess the metabolic composition of the calyces. In this study, 18 polar metabolites were assigned using 1D and 2D NMR spectra, and 10 of them were quantified. Proximate analysis showed that the TD method is more efficient at reducing moisture and maintaining the ash content of the Hibiscus biomass. NMR metabolomics indicates that the metabolite composition significantly differs between SD and TD samples and is more stable in TD plant processing. The differences in post-harvest drying has a greater impact on the metabolite composition of Hibiscus than the plant location.

Abstract
A screening of inhibitory activity of α-amylase, as well as pancreatic lipase (PL), under the influence of aqueous and ethanolic preparations from 12 plant materials was performed. The most active aqueous extracts from the fruits of Chaenomeles japonica (CJ) and Hippophaë rhamnoides (HR) were selected for artificial gastrointestinal digestion (GID). The aim of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory effect of the fractions obtained after GID on PL and α-amylase activities using a fluorescence assay. The changes in the composition of crude extracts in GID aliquots were followed by analysis with HPLC-DAD-MSn method in order to indicate active constituents. The main constituents of CJ and HR extracts were procyanidins and isorhamnetin derivatives, respectively. The most abundant compounds of extracts were found in all compartments of the digestion model correlated with relevant lipase/α-amylase inhibitory activity. What is more, the gastric and intestinal fractions inhibited enzymatic activity by at least 40%.

Abstract
Applications of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G) are limited due to the poor stabilities. In this work, we proposed using silk fibroin peptide (SFP) to bind with C3G and form nanocomposites (134.73 ± 4.51 nm) for stabilization. When interacted with C3G, the fluorescence of SFP contributed by tyrosine and phenylalanine amino acids was quenched, which was proved a static quenching with the β-sheet structure of SFP unchanged. With the further exploration of the physicochemical stabilities of C3G in the nanocomposites, we demonstrated that the tolerance of C3G to the alkaline environment and the retention ratio of C3G in various concentrations of metallic ion Cu2+ were significantly improved. In addition, the heat resistance of C3G in SFP at 80 °C was also enhanced with up to an increase of 2.5 times for the average half-life of C3G. Our results shed light on SFP could enhance physicochemical stabilities of C3G with maintaining its antioxidant activity.

Abstract
Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.), as an edible flower, has long provided an array of positive effects on human health. This benefit is a result of phenolic compounds that are naturally present mainly in the calyx. Plentiful medicinal remedies and functional foods based on this flower are available worldwide, as supported by the studies of phenolic compounds in recent decades. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the composition, biological activity, and beneficial effects on human health of phenolic compounds in roselle. This review was performed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A structured search in the published literature for phenolics compositions in roselle was required prior to the evaluation on the validity of the reported analytical methods. Reliable identification and quantification of phenolic compounds in roselle can be achieved by employing the proper extraction and separation methods. With ample alternative analytical methods discussed here, this review provided an aid for comprehending and selecting the most appropriate method for a particular study. The applications of the analytical methods highlighted indicated that phenolic acids, flavonoids, and their derivatives have been identified and quantified in roselle with a range of biological activities and beneficial effects on human health. It was also disclosed that the composition and concentration of phenolic compounds in roselle vary due to the growth factors, cultivars, and environmental influence. Finally, apart from the research progress carried out with roselle during the last ten years, this review also proposed relevant future works.

Abstract
Blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) is a fruit recognized in the world as healthy, and many of its active ingredients have important physiological functions. This study analyzed the antioxidant activity, antitumor activity, and immune function of anthocyanins and polyphenols extracted from blueberries. The crude extracts of anthocyanins and polyphenols were obtained from blueberries and then purified, and the extract exhibited excellent dose-dependent antitumor activity and antioxidant activity in vivo and in vitro. The purified anthocyanins and polyphenol compounds showed higher antioxidant activity, whereas the crude extract had a better inhibitory effect on tumor proliferation than pure extract, and the blueberry anthocyanin and polyphenol crude product mixture showed a more powerful tumor suppressor, which may be the result of the synergistic effect of multiple compounds. The crude extracts were also more efficient at improving immune function, as reflected by measurements of change in body weight, thymus and spleen indices, macrophage phagocytosis, lymphocyte transformation capacity, superoxide dismutase activity, malondialdehyde content, and serum nitric oxide levels. These results indicate that blueberry anthocyanins and polyphenol extracts can improve immune function and reduce the metastasis and proliferation of cancer cells. This study reveals the functions of important active substances in blueberries and provides support for the development of functional health products and therapeutic drugs. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: We compared the biological activity of crude and purified anthocyanins and polyphenol extracts from blueberries and tested their effects on improving immune function. This study contributes to a better understanding of the bioactivity of blueberry extracts and is valuable for further applications of blueberries in medicine.

Abstract
The chemical composition, antioxidant activity (AA), cytotoxic activity, antihemolytic effects, and enzyme inhibition (EI) of lyophilized jabuticaba (Myrciaria jaboticaba) seed extract (LJE) was studied. The main compounds found were castalagin, vescalagin, procyanidin A2, and ellagic acid. LJE was more toxic to cancer cells than to normal cells, meaning relative toxicological safety. This cytotoxic effect can be attributed to the pro-oxidant effect observed in the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation assay. LJE inhibited α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and ACE-I activities and protected human erythrocytes from hemolysis. LJE was incorporated into yogurts at different concentrations and the total phenolic content, AA, and EI increased in a dose-dependent manner. LJE-containing yogurt presented 86% sensory acceptance. The yogurt was administered to Wistar rats bearing cancer and it modulated the gut bacterial microbiota, having a prebiotic effect. LJE is a potential functional ingredient for food companies looking for TPC, AA, and prebiotic effect in vivo.

Abstract
Hibiscus species are rich in phenolic compounds and have been traditionally used for improving human health through their bioactive activities. The present study investigated the phenolic compounds of leaf extracts from 18 different H. acetosella accessions and evaluated their biofunctional properties, focusing on antioxidant and antibacterial activity. The most abundant phenolic compound in H. acetosella was caffeic acid, with levels ranging from 14.95 to 42.93 mg/100 g. The antioxidant activity measured by the ABTS assay allowed the accessions to be classified into two groups: a high activity group with red leaf varieties (74.71–84.02%) and a relatively low activity group with green leaf varieties (57.47–65.94%). The antioxidant activity was significantly correlated with TAC (0.933), Dp3-Sam (0.932), Dp3-Glu (0.924), and Cy3-Sam (0.913) contents (p < 0.001). The H. acetosella phenolic extracts exhibited antibacterial activity against two bacteria, with zones of inhibition between 12.00 and 13.67 mm (Staphylococcus aureus), and 10.67 and 13.33 mm (Pseudomonas aeruginosa). All accessions exhibited a basal antibacterial activity level (12 mm) against the Gram-positive S. aureus, with PI500758 and PI500764 exhibiting increased antibacterial activity (13.67 mm), but they exhibited a more dynamic antibacterial activity level against the Gram-negative P. aeruginosa.

Abstract
Hibiscus sabdariffa L. is widely acknowledged as an important source of value-added compounds as natural pigments and bioactive compounds whose isolation is of great interest in food industry. Due to the incessant demand of green extraction procedures, NADESs have emerged in the last years as new green solvents alternative to the conventional organic ones. The feasibility of NADESs for the extraction of value-added compounds of H. sabdariffa has been assessed in this work for the first time. An extraction technique based on microwave assisted extraction (MAE) and the use of NADESs was proposed testing different deep eutectic solvents based on choline chloride (ChCl). Among them, oxalic acid based NADES exhibited a great selectivity for anthocyanins in particular as well as higher extraction yields of bioactive compounds was also observed, even greater than those observed by methanol. The effect of extraction variables such as liquid-solid ratio, temperature and water percentage were studied by Box-Behnken design and a response surface methodology. The statistical program pointed out the liquid-solid ratio of 1:30 mL mg-1, temperature of 75 °C and a water percentage of 55% as the conditions to maximize extraction within the experimental domain. Hence, NADES composed by oxalic acid and choline chloride resulted to be an effective green alternative tailor-made solvent to carry out selective extractions of value-added compounds from H. sabdariffa.

UPLC-ESI-MS/MS Profile and Antioxidant, Cytotoxic, Antidiabetic, and Antiobesity Activities of the Aqueous Extracts of Three Different Hibiscus Species. J CHEM-NY 2020. Abstract
The aqueous extracts of Hibiscus calyphyllus (HcA), Hibiscus micranthus (HmA), and Hibiscus deflersii (HdA) growing in Saudi Arabia did not receive enough attention in phytochemical and biological studies. This inspired the authors to investigate the phytochemicals of these extracts for the first time using UPLC-ESI-MS/MS in negative and positive ionization modes. The analysis afforded the tentative identification of 103 compounds including phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and anthocyanins. Moreover, in vitro evaluations of their cytotoxic, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antiobesity activities were carried out. The results showed that aqueous extract of Hibiscus calyphyllus had the highest activity as an antioxidant agent (SC50 = 111 ± 1.5 μg/mL) compared with ascorbic acid (SC50 = 14.2 ± 0.5 μg/mL). MTT assay was used to evaluate cytotoxic activity compared to cisplatin. Hibiscus deflersii showed the most potent cytotoxic effect against A-549 (human lung carcinoma) with IC50 = 50 ± 5.1 μg/mL, and Hibiscus micranthus showed a close effect with IC50 = 60.4 ± 1.7 μg/mL. Hibiscus micranthus showed the most potent effect on HCT-116 (human colon carcinoma) with IC50 = 56 ± 1.9 μg/mL compared with cisplatin (IC50 = 7.53 ± 3.8 μg/mL). HcA and HdA extracts showed weak cytotoxic activity against A-549 and HCT-116 cell lines compared to the other extracts. Eventually, Hibiscus deflersii showed astonishing antidiabetic (IC50 = 56 ± 1.9 μg/mL) and antiobesity (IC50 = 95.45 ± 1.9 μg/mL) activities using in vitro α-amylase inhibitory assay (compared with acarbose (IC50 = 34.71 ± 0.7 μg/mL)) and pancreatic lipase inhibitory assay (compared with orlistat (IC50 = 23.8 ± 0.7 μg/mL)), respectively. In conclusion, these findings are regarded as the first vision of the phytochemical constituents and biological activities of different Hibiscus aqueous extracts. Hibiscus deflersii aqueous extract might be a hopeful origin of functional constituents with anticancer (on A-549 cell line), antidiabetic, and antiobesity activities. It might be a natural alternative remedy and nutritional policy for diabetes and obesity treatment without negative side effects. Isolation of the bioactive phytochemicals from the aqueous extracts of aerial parts of Hibiscus calyphyllus, Hibiscus micranthus, and Hibiscus deflersii and estimation of their biological effects are recommended in further studies.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the phenolic composition of crude lyophilized extracts (CLE) and partially purified (PPE) extracts of C. ternatea blue petals as well as the anthocyanin stability against pH, temperature and light in the presence and absence of fructooligosaccharides. Twelve compounds were tentatively identified by UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS in CLE and PPE extracts. In direct/reverse spectrophotometric titration, anthocyanins showed colour changes between pH 2.25 to 10.20, and colour reversibility, maintaining antioxidant activity against the DPPH radical. The aqueous extracts at pH 3.6 and 5.4 exhibited thermal stability with the presence and absence of fructooligosaccharides with activation energy higher than 99 kJ/mol. The addition of fructooligosaccharides in the extracts at pH 5.4 exposed to light provided a protective effect against anthocyanin photodegradation. The data show the technological potential of aqueous extract of C. ternatea blue petals as a natural colourant in a functional beverage model system.

Abstract
Titanbicus (TB), a hybrid of Hibiscus moscheutos × H. coccineus (Medic.) Walt., has potential to be used as an edible flower. In this study, proximate nutritional content, anthocyanin content, total polyphenol content (TPC), and antioxidant activities in vitro and in vivo were investigated. Three cultivars of TB, namely Artemis (AR), Rhea (R), and Adonis (AD), were used as materials. Protein and carbohydrates were the primary macronutrients, while crude fat and ash were detected in trace amounts. Cyanidin 3-glucoside (Cy3-G) and cyanidin 3-sambubioside (Cy3-Sam), were identified in all TBs. The highest anthocyanin content was observed in AD (47.09 ± 1.45 mg/g extract), followed by R and AR (6.04 ± 0.20 and 2.72 ± 0.11 mg/g extract, respectively). The TPC of AD (225.01 ± 1.97 mg/g extract) was greater than that of AR and R (185.41 ± 3.24 and 144.10 ± 1.71 mg/g extract, respectively). AD exhibited the strongest in vitro antioxidant activity in hydrophilic oxygen radical absorbance capacity, compared to the other two TBs. In addition, AD extract suppressed the generation of reactive oxygen species in caudal fin of wounded zebrafish. Antioxidant activities of AD appeared to be related to its total anthocyanin content, Cy3-G, Cy3-Sam, and TPC. Our findings indicate that TB, particularly the AD cultivar, would be an attractive source of bioactive compounds with antioxidant activities, and can improve both nutritional value and appearance of food.

Abstract
The processing and digestive stability of ethanolic extracts from four Thai rice bran varieties, namely Khao Dawk Mali 105, Hom Nil, Kiaw Ngu, and Leum Pua, were assessed by applying different thermal and pH conditions, as well as in vitro gastrointestinal digestion models. High-performance liquid chromatography, Folin-Ciocalteu analysis, as well as 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays were used to determine the chemical composition, total phenolic content (TPC), and antioxidant activity. Thermal treatment at 100 °C for 15 min induced the degradation of phenolic components and TPC, whereas the antioxidant activities measured by DPPH and FRAP assays remained stable after the heat treatment. Higher phenolic content and antioxidant activity values were observed in the extracts incubated at acidic pH levels of 3 and 5. After simulated digestion, all extracts exhibited the decrease of phenolic compounds and anthocyanin contents, as well as antioxidant activities.

Abstract
Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (Malvaceae) is one of the well-known traditionally used remedy worldwide. It exhibited numerous pharmacological properties including antioxidant, antidepressant, sedative, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, antimicrobial and neuroprotective activities. The aim of this study is to highlight the mechanisms underlying the neuroprotective effects of anthocyanin-enriched extracts of two Hibiscus varieties (white and red calyces) in the management of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in addition to their metabolic profiling. The anthocyanin contents were determined quantitatively using the pH-differential technique and qualitatively by LC/MS/MS. The extracts were tested in vitro for their antioxidant potential as well as acetylcholinesterase inhibition activity and both showed promising activities. The LC/MS/MS analysis allowed the tentative identification of 26 and 24 metabolites in red and white calyces, respectively, represented by anthocyanins, flavonoids, aliphatic and phenolic acids. In vivo, streptozotocin induced AD in mice model was established and Hibiscus extracts were tested at a dose of 200 mg kg-1 compared to celecoxib (30 mg/kg). Histopathology of cerebral cortex and hippocampus, immunohistochemistry for tau- protein and caspase-3 with behavioral tests and measurement of several biochemical parameters were done. Hibiscus prevented memory impairment, and this could be attributed to the amelioration of STZ-induced neuroinflammation and amyloidogenesis. Consequently, Hibiscus represents a promising safe agent that can be repurposed for AD through exerting anti-inflammatory, anti-acetylcholinesterase, antioxidant, and anti-amyloidogenic activities.

Abstract
Black bean is a source of anthocyanins and other phenolic compounds that are associated with health benefits. This work aimed to optimize the extraction and determine the stability and biological potential of black bean anthocyanin-rich extracts recovered by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and pressurized liquid extraction (PLE). The highest concentration of anthocyanins and total phenolic compounds were recovered with SFE using 300 bar, 60 °C and co-solvent ethanol/distilled water (50/50, v/v). Eleven non-colored phenolic compounds were identified in SFE extract using Ultra performance liquid chromatography - Electrospray ionization-Quadrupole -Time of flight - Mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-QToF-MS/MS). Myricetin, syringic acid, rutin hydrate and chlorogenic acid presented the highest relative area among identified compounds. Compared to leaching extraction, SFE extracts showed a similar storage stability at 4, 25 and 32 °C (p < 0.05), but with a higher antioxidant potential (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH) IC50: 0.078 ± 0.01; 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline)-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) IC50: 0.161 ± 0.03) and antidiabetic potential (α-amylase IC50: 124.76 ± 12.97; α-glucosidase IC50: 31.30 ± 0.84; dipeptidyl peptidase-IV IC50: 0.195 ± 0.01). SFE extraction is an efficient method to obtain anthocyanins and other phenolic compounds with exceptional biological potential.

Abstract
Hibiscus sabdariffa or roselle tea is popular around the globe for its antioxidant capability along with various other health benefits. Besides, it has uses in Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal medicines for the treatment of several diseases. However, the investigation for the anticancer potential of the plant began roughly in the last decade that emerged with encouraging results. Both crude extracts and pure compounds of the plant were reported to induce chemoprevention, selective cytotoxicity, cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, autophagy and anti-metastasis effects in varied types of human cancer cells. The plant contains a high quantity of polyphenolic compounds and at least two of them were proven to induce potent anticancer effects. Although, the molecular mechanism underlying the anticancer activity was roughly estimated in several studies. The present review aimed to assemble all ambiguous information to report the molecular evidence establishing the potent anticancer activity of Hibiscus sabdariffa and its implication for cancer therapy. This study suggests that Hibiscus sabdariffa is an ideal candidate to investigate its role as a herbal supplement for cancer prevention and treatment. With excellent safety and tolerability record, polyphenolic compounds from the plant need better designed clinical trials.
