Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of lysine (Lys) on quality profile promotion and saltiness compensation in reduced‑sodium salt frankfurters. The results showed that the cooking loss of reduced‑sodium salt frankfurters decreased from 5.63 to 3.45% when the Lys level increased from 0.1 to 0.7%, as well as enhanced water contents and saltiness in a Lys dose-dependent manner. Moreover, the corresponding peak area percentage (A21) of reduced‑sodium salt frankfurters remarkably increased from 79.63% to 81.48% with the increased level of Lys. However, a higher level of Lys (≥ 0.5%) obviously reduced the textural properties of reduced‑sodium salt frankfurters, which was clearly verified by looser and rougher microstructures. Furthermore, hydrogen bonds were found to be the dominant molecular force in Lys-added reduced‑sodium salt frankfurters. Meanwhile, 0.3% Lys was found to exhibit the optimal sodium salt-replacing effect due to the highest degree of quality profile promotion and saltiness compensation. Additionally, directional triangle sensory evaluation further confirmed that the reduced‑sodium salt frankfurters treated with 0.3% Lys was perceived to be similar to control frankfurters, resulting a 50% salt-reduction effect. Thus, our results suggested that Lys could be applied as an efficient sodium salt alternative in reduced‑sodium salt frankfurters.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the umami characteristics of soy sauce using electronic tongue evaluation and amino acid composition and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis. The soy sauce peptides were isolated from soy sauce using XAD-16 macroporous resin combined with ethanol solution. The results showed that the soy sauce peptide fraction eluted by 60% ethanol (SS-60%) exhibited a prominent umami taste, and the umami scores were highly positively correlated with the amino acid nitrogen contents of soy sauces. The umami scores of SS-60% were significantly positively correlated with the contents of free amino acids. Especially, Phe showed the highest positive correlation with the umami scores. In addition, five characteristic ion peaks with m/z at 499, 561, 643, 649, and 855 were identified in the peptide mass fingerprinting. Therefore, this study provides new insights into the umami characteristics for the taste evaluation and reality identification of soy sauce.

Abstract
Saffron, the dried stigma of Crocus sativus L., is a renowned spice and medicinal herb. During its production, a significant amount of floral residues, rich in bioactive compounds, are discarded as agricultural by-products. This study presents a novel approach to the sustainable utilization of these stigmaless floral residues (FRC) by optimizing the extraction and purification of their flavonoids, analyzing their chemical composition, and evaluating their effect on glucose uptake. The extraction of flavonoids from FRC was optimized using single-factor experiments and response surface methodology. The optimal conditions for extraction were an ethanol concentration of 67.7%, a temperature of 67.6 °C, a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:30, an extraction time of 3 h, and two extractions. The crude extract obtained was then purified using macroporous resin HPD100, selected after comparing the adsorption and desorption characteristics of six different resins. The optimal purification parameters were an adsorption concentration of 40 mg/mL, a loading volume of 7 bed volumes (BV) at a flow rate of 3 BV/h, and 80% ethanol as the eluent with a volume of 4 BV. The resulting flavonoid-enriched extract (FFRC) had an experimental yield of 8.67% ± 0.01 and a flavonoid content of 128.30 ± 4.64 mg/g. The main flavonoids in FFRC were identified as kaempferol glycosides, isorhamnetin glycosides, and quercetin glycosides. Moreover, FFRC significantly stimulated glucose consumption and uptake in C2C12 myotubes, suggesting its potential utility as a natural hypoglycemic agent. This study contributes to the sustainable and value-added utilization of agricultural resources by providing data for the exploitation and application of flavonoids from saffron by-products.

Abstract
Chaenomeles speciosa (Sweet) Nakai fruit is a good source of phenolics with many health benefits. In this work, the enrichment of C. speciosa fruit total phenolics (CSFTP) using macroporous resins was studied. NKA-Ⅱ resin was selected for enriching CSFTP due to its highest adsorption/desorption quantity. Adsorption characteristics of CSFTP on NKA-Ⅱ resin exhibited a good fit with the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second order kinetics model. This adsorption was spontaneous, exothermic, and entropy-decreasing through a physisorption mechanism. The breakthrough-elution curves were studied to optimize CSFTP enrichment conditions. One-step enrichment increased CSFTP content in the extracts from 26.51 % to 78.63 %, with a recovery of 81.03 %. A UPLC-QqQ-MS/MS method in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode was established and validated for the simultaneous quantification of seven phenolic compounds. This study demonstrates the feasibility of industrial enrichment of CSFTP using NKA-Ⅱ resin and proposes a reliable method for quality control of CSFTP-rich products.

Abstract
Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADESs) have emerged as a green and sustainable alternative to conventional organic solvents to extract bioactive compounds. However, the recovery of bioactive compounds from the NADES extracts is challenging, restricting their large-scale applications. The present work investigated the recovery of glycyrrhizic acid (GA) from choline-chloride/lactic acid NADES extract using macroporous resins. GA possesses a wide spectrum of biological activities, and it is extracted from the well-known herb Glycyrrhiza glabra. During resin screening, DIAIONTM SP700 showed high adsorption and desorption capacities. The adsorption kinetics study demonstrated that the adsorption of GA on SP700 followed Pseudo First-order kinetic model. Moreover, the adsorption behaviors were elucidated by the Freundlich isotherm using a correlation coefficient based on a static adsorption study at different temperatures and pH. Furthermore, the thermodynamic parameters, for instance, the change of Gibbs free energy (ΔG*), entropy (ΔS*), and enthalpy (ΔH*), showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous, favorable and exothermic. In addition, the sample after macroporous resin treatment, which is enriched with GA exhibited good anticancer potential analyzed by SRB assay. The regenerated NADES solvent was recycled twice, keeping more than 90% extraction efficiency, indicating good reusability of NADES in the GA extraction process by using macroporous resin.

Abstract
To improve the utilization value of raspberry leaves, the extraction and purification conditions of phenolic compounds from raspberry leaves were optimized, and the contents of phenolic compounds and the biological activities of extracts were studied. After steam explosion pretreatment at 115 °C for 15 min, raspberry leaf extract with a total phenolic content (TPC) of 136.30~140.51 mg GAE/g was obtained via homogenization and ultrasound-assisted extraction. In addition, the adsorption relationship between raspberry leaf polyphenols and middle polar XDA-6 macroporous resin was best described by the Langmuir model, and tended to be monolayer adsorption. Its adsorption kinetics best resembled the pseudo second-order kinetic model, and it was speculated that this was influenced by multiple factors. According to the optimal integrated extraction-purification process, the TPC of the extracts increased to 738.98 mg GAE/g after one application of purification and 905.27 mg GAE/g after two applications of purification. Moreover, the latter case showed the highest antioxidant activity and α-glucosidase inhibition activity, and the content of the most typical compound, quercetin-3-glucuronide, reached 199.69 mg/g. SE has a double-edged effect, and is more conducive to the release of active substances as a pre-treatment method. This study provides a theoretical basis for the efficient use of raspberry leaves, further improving their medicinal and economic value.

Abstract
Flavonoids are major active small-molecule compounds in bamboo leaves, which can be easily obtained from the bamboo leaves extraction residues (BLER) after the polysaccharides extraction. Six macroporous resins with different properties were screened to prepare and enrich isoorientin (IOR), orientin (OR), vitexin (VI), and isovitexin (IVI) from BLER, and the XAD-7HP resin with the best adsorption and desorption performance was selected for further evaluation. Based on the static adsorption experiments, the experimental results showed that the adsorption isotherm fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model, and the adsorption process was better explained by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. After the dynamic trial of resin column chromatography, 20 bed volume (BV) of upload sample and 60% ethanol as eluting solvent was used in a lab scale-up separation, and the results demonstrated that the content of four flavonoids could be increased by 4.5-fold, with recoveries between 72.86 and 88.21%. In addition, chlorogenic acid (CA) with purity of 95.1% was obtained in water-eluted parts during dynamic resin separation and further purified by high-speed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC). In conclusion, this rapid and efficient method can provide a reference to utilize BLER to produce high-value-added food and pharmaceutical products.

Abstract
The aim of current study was to optimize the extraction process and purification of main components (MC) to obtain high antioxidant, anti-inflammatory effective fractions from crabapple (Malus prunifolia (Willd.) Borkh.). The effects of three variables including ethanol concentration A1, solid-liquid ratio A2, extraction temperature A3 were investigated and optimized by response surface methodology (RSM) coupled with Box-Behnken design (BBD). The adsorption/desorption characteristics of MC on the five types of macroporous resins were investigated. According to batch adsorption test, HPD-300 resins were selected for kinetics. The adsorption mechanism showed that the process was appropriate by pseudo-second-order kinetics model, and purification parameters of MC were optimized through adsorption/desorption experiments with the column packed by HPD-300 resin. The effective fractions were obviously superior to other fractions according to DPPH, ABTS, COX-2 and 15-LOX radical scavenging. This work implies that the purified active fraction with high contents of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds from crabapple might be potential source for natural products and food industries.

Abstract
Melanoidins, the dark-color recalcitrant Maillard reaction by-products in thermal hydrolyzed sludge (THS), cause significant adverse effects on wastewater treatment. This study aimed to develop an efficient adsorption method for recovering melanoidins from THS by macroporous resin. The adsorptive characteristics of six macroporous resins (XAD761, XAD8, XAD16HP, FPX66, HPD-600 and IRA958Cl) showed that XAD761, not yet reported for melanoidins extraction, was the most appropriate with the highest recovery ratio. The adsorption kinetics followed pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption process was confirmed to be physical, spontaneous, and exothermic, without changing the structure of the adsorbed melanoidins. In the dynamic adsorption, the breakthrough point increased with a decreasing flow rate. After five consecutive regeneration cycles, XAD761 resin maintained stable adsorption efficiency and thus had a good potential for reuse. Furthermore, the physicochemical properties of the extracted THS melanoidins were compared with model melanoidins to lay the foundation for their management, in terms of morphology, molecular weight (MW), and spectrophotometric properties. These results demonstrate that XAD761 resin extraction is a promising sustainable method for practical application in the recovery of melanoidins from THS.

Abstract
To enhance the content of adlay bran soluble dietary fiber (SDF) and improve its functionality, we investigated the influences of steam explosion (SE) on the physicochemical, structural properties, and in vitro hypoglycemic activities of adlay bran SDF. The cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin contents of adlay bran decreased significantly after SE treatment. When the SE strength was 0.8 MPa for 3 min, the SDF content was 9.37%, which was a significant increase of 27.48% compared to the control. Under these conditions, SDF showed the highest oil-holding capacity (OHC) (2.18 g/g), cholesterol adsorption capacity (CAC) (27.29 mg/g), glucose adsorption capacity (GAC) (15.54 mg/g), glucose dialysis retardation index (GDRI) (36.57%), and α-Amylase activity inhibition ratio (α-AAIR) (74.14%). Compared with SDF from untreated adlay bran, SDF from SE-treated adlay bran showed lower weight molecular. In addition, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement showed that the peak temperature of SDF from adlay bran treated by SE increased by 4.19°C compared to the untreated SDF sample. The structure of SDF from adlay bran treated by SE showed that the SDF surface was rough and poriferous and the specific surface areas increased. In conclusion, SE pretreatment increases the content of SDF in adlay bran and improves its physicochemical, structural properties, and biological activities, which will be beneficial for the further exploitation of adlay bran.

Abstract
BACKGROUND C-glycosylated flavonoids are a main type of structural modification and can endow flavonoids with greater stability, bioactivity, and bioavailability. Although some C-glycosylated flavonoids have been biosynthesized in vivo or vitro, only a few C-glycosylflavonols have been prepared by these methods. RESULTS In this study, several uridine 5'-diphosphate (UDP)-glucose biosynthesis pathways and Escherichia coli hosts were screened to reconstruct recombinant strains for producing the novel C-glycosylflavonols kaempferol 8-C-glucoside and quercetin 8-C-glucoside. To increase C-glycosylflavonol production, the timing of flavonol addition was adjusted, and glycerol was added to avoid degradation of C-glycosylflavonols. By using resting cell bioconversion, the highest kaempferol 8-C-glucoside and quercetin 8-C-glucoside production reached 16.6 g/L and 12.5 g/L, respectively. Then, ultrasound-assisted adsorption/desorption was used to prepare C-glycosylflavonols by using macroporous resins. Through screening macroporous resins and optimizing the adsorption/desorption conditions, the highest adsorption capacity and desorption capacity for kaempferol 8-C-glucoside on HPD100 reached 28.57 mg/g and 24.15 mg/g, respectively. Finally, kaempferol 8-C-glucoside (15.4 g) with a yield of 93% and quercetin 8-C-glucoside (11.3 g) with a yield of 91% were obtained from 1 L of fermentation broth. CONCLUSIONS Kaempferol 8-C-glucoside and quercetin 8-C-glucoside are novel C-glycosylflavonols, which have not been extracted from plants. This study provides an efficient method for the preparation and biocatalytic synthesis of kaempferol 8-C-glucoside and quercetin 8-C-glucoside by metabolic engineering of Escherichia coli.

Abstract
In this work, the extraction procedure of a natural pigment from the flower of Ceiba speciosa (A. St.-Hil.) was optimized by response surface methodology. It is the first time that the extraction of the flower pigment of C. speciosa (FPCS) has been reported, along with an evaluation of its stability and biological activity under various conditions, and an exploration of its potential use as a food additive and in medicine. Specifically, the effects of ethanol concentration, solid-liquid ratio, temperature and time on the extraction rate of FPCS were determined using a Box-Behnken design. The optimum extraction conditions for FPCS were 75% ethanol with a solid-liquid ratio of 1:75 mg/mL) at 66 °C for 39 min. The purification of FPCS using different macroporous resins showed that D101 performed best when the initial mass concentration of the injection solution was 1.50 mg/mL, resulting in a three-fold increase in color value. The yield of dry flowers was 9.75% of fresh petals and the FPCS extraction efficiency was 43.2%. The effects of light, solubility, pH, temperature, sweeteners, edible acids, redox agents, preservatives and metal ions on FPCS were also investigated. Furthermore, the characteristics of FPCS were determined by spectrophotometry at a specific wavelength using the Lambert-Beer law to correlate the mass of FPCS with its absorbance value. An acute toxicological test performed according to Horne's method showed that FPCS is a non-toxic extract and thus may be used as a food additive or in other ingestible forms. Finally, western blotting showed that FPCS prevents lipopolysaccharide-induced hippocampal oxidative stress in mice. The study suggests that FPCS may function as an antioxidant with applications in the food, cosmetics and polymer industries.

Abstract
AbstractThis work evaluates the purification of melon peel extracts obtained by two eco-friendly methods: autohydrolysis and sodium acetate/urea/water extraction (1:3:1.6), an alkaline deep eutectic solvent (DES). For that, sequential ethanol precipitation and resin adsorption/desorption stages were proposed for the separate recovery of the pectic and phenolic fractions. In order to screen the optimal purification conditions, in a first step, the effect of ethanol concentrations (from 70 to 85%) on the precipitation of pectic oligosaccharides was assayed. Subsequently, the influence of the selected resin (Amberlite XAD4, XAD16HP and XAD7HP), liquid/resin ratios, and desorption sequences (varying ethanol concentrations and pH) on the phenolic compounds was also studied. The highest pectin yields were achieved with 85% ethanol: 16.11 and 18.05 g pectin/100 g water-insoluble solids (WIS) for autohydrolysis and DES extracts, respectively. All pectins presented a galacturonic acid content of about 45%, while autohydrolysis pectin presented a higher amount of neutral sugar side chains. The presence of low methoxyl GalA and both linear and branched OGalA with DP from 2 to 20 was also confirmed by FTIR and HPAEC-PAD analysis, respectively. Concerning the phenolic fraction, the resin adsorption and desorption steps at the selected conditions (XAD4 resin, liquid/resin ratio of 2 mL/g, eluted with 50% ethanol thrice) resulted in 79.55 and 4.08 mg GAE/g non-volatile content (NVC) for autohydrolysis and DES extracts, respectively, with improved antioxidant capacity. Moreover, some phenolic acids (protocatechuic and ferulic acids) and flavonoids (orientin, vitexin and naringenin) were quantified in the extracts by HPLC–PDA-MS/MS.

Abstract
In recent years, green extraction of bioactive compounds from herbal medicines has generated widespread interest. Deep eutectic solvents (DES) have widely replaced traditional organic solvents in the extraction process. In this study, the efficiencies of eight DESs in extracting flavonoids from Acanthopanax senticosus (AS) were compared. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the independent variable including ultrasonic power, water content, solid-liquid ratio, extraction temperature, and extraction time. DES composed of glycerol and levulinic acid (1:1) was chosen as the most suitable extraction medium. Optimal conditions were ultrasonic power of 500 W, water content of 28%, solid-liquid ratio of 1:18 g·mL−1, extraction temperature of 55 °C, and extraction time of 73 min. The extraction yield of total flavonoids reached 23.928 ± 0.071 mg·g−1, which was 40.7% higher compared with ultrasonic-assisted ethanol extraction. Macroporous resin (D-101, HPD-600, S-8 and AB-8) was used to recover flavonoids from extracts. The AB-8 resin showed higher adsorption/desorption performance, with a recovery rate of total flavonoids of up to 71.56 ± 0.256%. In addition, DES solvent could efficiently be reused twice. In summary, ultrasonic-assisted DES combined with the macroporous resin enrichment method is exceptionally effective in recovering flavonoids from AS, and provides a promising environmentally friendly and recyclable strategy for flavonoid extraction from natural plant sources.

Abstract
In this study, phenolic compounds from an aqueous protein by-product from rapeseed meal (RSM) were identified by HPLC-DAD and HPLC-ESI-MS, including sinapine, sinapic acid, sinapoyl glucose, and 1,2-di-sinapoyl gentibiose. The main phenolic compound in this by-product was sinapine. We also performed acid hydrolysis to convert sinapine, and sinapic acid derivatives present in the permeate, to sinapic acid. The adsorption of phenolic compounds was investigated using five macroporous resins, including XAD4, XAD7, XAD16, XAD1180, and HP20. Among them, XAD16 showed the highest total phenolic contents adsorption capacities. The adsorption behavior of phenolic compounds was described by pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. Moreover, thermodynamics tests demonstrated that the adsorption process of phenolic compounds was exothermic and spontaneous. The highest desorption ratio was obtained with 30% (v/v) and 70% (v/v) ethanol for sinapine and sinapic acid, respectively, with a desorption ratio of 63.19 ± 0.03% and 94.68 ± 0.013%. DPPH and ABTS tests revealed that the antioxidant activity of the hydrolyzed fraction was higher than the non-hydrolyzed fraction and higher than the one of vitamin C. Antioxidant tests demonstrated that these phenolic compounds could be used as natural antioxidants, which can be applied in the food industry.

Abstract
In order to investigate the purification process and antioxidant activity of triterpenic acids from blackened jujube, the macroporous resin was applied to purify the crude extract from blackened jujube. The adsorption and desorption characterizations of five different macroporous adsorption resins (AB-8, D-101, X-5, HPD-100, S-8) for triterpenic acids of blackened jujube were compared, the optimum purification resins were screened, and the purification parameters were optimized. The antioxidant activity of crude extracts and purified products from blackened jujube was analyzed. The results showed that D-101 resin possessed the best effect on the purification of blackened jujube triterpenic acids. The optimum purification parameters were as follows: sample concentration 25.5 μg/ml, 130 ml of the sample volume was with a flow rate of 2.0 ml/min, eluted with 95% ethanol, and speed flow was 1.0 ml/min. The purity of triterpenic acids was increased by 2.49 times after purification with a recovery rate of (78.58 ± 0.67)%. Furthermore, the IC50 values of hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity from triterpenic acids crude extract and purified substances were 0.900 and 0.850 mg/ml, respectively, and the IC50 values of superoxide anion radical were 0.745 and 0.594 mg/ml, respectively, indicating that the antioxidative capacity of the purified product was stronger than the crude extract. The purified triterpenic acids (PTA) groups at different doses had excellent protective effects on H2O2-induced damage HUVEC cells. Results have revealed that triterpenic acids of blackened jujube have good antioxidant function and utilization and development prospects.

Abstract
In this study, for the first time, the adsorption/desorption characteristics of carnosic acid and carnosol from deep eutectic solvent extract of Salvia officinalis on five macroporous resins (HP20, XAD7HP, XAD16N, HP21, HP2MG) were evaluated. The high adsorption and medium desorption capacities of carnosic acid and carnosol as well as antibacterial and antiradical activity from the extract obtained with choline chloride:lactic acid (1:2) on XAD7HP resin indicated that resin was appropriate. To get the optimal separation process, the influence of factors such as adsorption/desorption time and volume of desorbent was further investigated. The results showed that the extract with high antiradical and antibacterial activity was obtained via adsorption and desorption on XAD7HP resin. The extraction efficiencies of the deep eutectic solvents (DESs) recycled once, twice, and thrice were 97.64% (±0.03%), 93.10% (±0.66%), and 88.94% (±1.15%), respectively, for carnosic acid, and 96.63% (±0.04%), 94.38% (±0.27%), and 91.19% (±0.36%), respectively, for carnosol, relative to the initial solvent efficiency. Based on that, this method is a promising basis for the large-scale preparation of extracts from Salvia officinalis with further application in the pharmaceutical or food industry, especially for maintaining the “green” character of the whole process to obtain the appropriate extract.

Abstract
Salinity stress is an important plant growth limiting factor influencing crop productivity negatively. Microbial interventions for salinity stress mitigation have invited significant attention due to the promising impacts of interactive associations on the intrinsic mechanisms of plants. We report the impact of microbial inoculation of a halotolerant methylotrophic actinobacterium (Nocardioides sp. NIMMe6; LC140963) and seed coating of its phytohormone-rich bacterial culture filtrate extract (BCFE) on wheat seedlings grown under saline conditions. Different plant-growth-promoting (PGP) attributes of the bacterium in terms of its growth in N-limiting media and siderophore and phytohormone [indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and salicylic acid] production influenced plant growth positively. Microbial inoculation and priming with BCFE resulted in improved germination (92% in primed seeds at 10 dS m–1), growth, and biochemical accumulation (total protein 42.01 and 28.75 mg g–1 in shoot and root tissues at 10 dS m–1 in BCFE-primed seeds) and enhanced the activity level of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase) to confer stress mitigation. Biopriming with BCFE proved impactful. The BCFE application has further influenced the overexpression of defense-related genes in the seedlings grown under salinity stress condition. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry-based characterization of the biomolecules in the BCFE revealed quantification of salicylate and indole-3-acetate (Rt 4.978 min, m/z 138.1 and 6.177 min, 129.1), respectively. The high tolerance limit of the bacterium to 10% NaCl in the culture media suggested its possible survival and growth under high soil salinity condition as microbial inoculant. The production of a high quantity of IAA (45.6 μg ml–1 of culture filtrate) by the bacterium reflected its capability to not only support plant growth under salinity condition but also mitigate stress due to the impact of phytohormone as defense mitigators. The study suggested that although microbial inoculation offers stress mitigation in plants, the phytohormone-rich BCFE from Nocardioides sp. NIMMe6 has potential implications for defense against salinity stress in wheat.

Abstract
Background Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. (EUO) was a traditional Chinese herb, its leaves were abundant in China, and polyphenol compounds were considered to be an important active ingredient in Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. leaves (EUOL). However, previous research mainly focused on compound identification and extraction process, there were few reported on the efficient enrichment process and biological activity evaluation of polyphenols in EUOL. Methods The adsorption and desorption characteristics of twelve different resins (HPD-100, HPD-300, HPD-600, D-3250, X-5, D-140, NKA-9, NKA-II, D-101, AB-8, S-8 and Polyamide) were investigated to develop an efficient method for the enrichment of polyphenol from EUOL, and the static adsorption, kinetics, isotherm and thermodynamics of the polyphenol from EUOL were analyzed. The eluted component was obtained through dynamic elution, and its main polyphenol compounds were detected by high-phase liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the inhibitory effects on the enzyme activity of α-amylase and α-glucosidase was also evaluated for different elution components. Meanwhile, the binding of main polyphenol compounds to enzyme was also evaluated. Results The selected resins (HPD-300, HPD-600, D-3250, X-5, D-140, NKA-9, D-101 and AB-8) showed adsorption patterns that fitted well to the pseudo second-order kinetics. The intra-particle diffusion model demonstrated that the diffusion of polyphenol compounds on these resins were divided into three processes. For HPD-300, HPD-600 and NKA-9, the Freundlich model better described the adsorption isotherm behavior than the Langmuir model, and the adsorption of polyphenol was a physical, exothermic, and spontaneous process. Subsequently, dynamic elution was performed yielding a higher polyphenol content in a 60% ethanol-water elution component, and it also exhibited a higher inhibitory effect on α-amylase and α-glucosidase activity. Furthermore, as the main polyphenol compounds, chlorogenic acid, rutin, quercetin and kaempferol were used to simulate the binding to the enzyme protein through molecular docking technology. The results showed that quercetin had a higher docking score for α-amylase, while rutin displayed superior binding to α-glucosidase. Conclusions Therefore, polyphenols of EUOL could be enriched through macroporous resins and have the potential to be effective enzyme inhibitor.

Abstract
This work described the purification and enrichment of flavonoids from baobab (Adansonia digitata) fruit pulp (BFP) by ultrasound-assisted adsorption/desorption procedure using macroporous resins. Four resins were tested and HPD-500 polar resin exhibited the best adsorption/desorption properties. Based on preliminary experiments and literature reports, the effects of various ultrasonic conditions including high power short time (HPST, 540 W for 5 min), medium power medium time (MPMT, 270 W for 15 min) and low power long time (LPLT, 45 W for 30 min) as well as different temperatures (T = 25-45 °C) on the adsorption of Total Flavonoids Content (TFC) were investigated in comparison with orbital shaking/no sonication (NS). Also, the effect of ultrasound on the desorption capacity and recovery of TFC was determined at different concentrations of ethanol (30-100%). Remarkably, ultrasonic treatment significantly increased the adsorption/desorption capacity and recovery and shortened the equilibrium time. The pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm models better delineated the adsorption process under ultrasound. Moreover, the adsorption process was both spontaneous and thermodynamically favourable with physical adsorption and multilinear intraparticle diffusion being the predominant mechanisms of the whole process. HPST treatment at 25 °C with 80% ethanol as the desorption solvent most noticeably enhanced the adsorption/desorption of flavonoids and contributed to the highest recovery of TFC, Total Phenolic Content (TPC), and antioxidant capacity in addition to a 5-8-fold reduction in total sugar and acid contents when compared with NS treatment. Moreover, HPLC analysis revealed that the content of nine out of thirteen phenolic compounds from the HPST treatment was the highest, and the individual flavonoids content increased by 2-3-fold compared with the other treatments. Our analyses suggested that ultrasound can be employed as a practical approach to intensify the adsorption and desorption of functional compounds in BFP.

Abstract
The ultrasound assisted purification of asparagus polyphenols by adsorption and desorption on the macroporous resins was investigated. The ultrasound within the selected intensities (12-120 W) and temperatures (25-35 °C) increased the adsorption and desorption capacities of asparagus polyphenols on D101 resins. Higher ultrasound intensity (120 W) and lower temperature (25 °C) benefited the adsorption process and the adsorption capacity of total polyphenols after ultrasound was 3.95 mg/g, which was 2 times than that obtained after shaking at 120 rpm. Meanwhile, ultrasound can significantly shorten the equilibrium time and the adsorption process of asparagus polyphenols could be well described by Pseudo-second order model and Freundlich model. Stereoscopic microscope was first used to investigate the microstructure characterization of resins, indicating that ultrasound mainly enhanced the surface roughness of resins. Interestingly, rutin possessed the highest adsorption capacities and ferulic acid had the highest the desorption capacities among the studied individual polyphenols. The obtained results evidenced on a progressive insight of application of ultrasound assisted resins for purification of asparagus polyphenols.

Abstract
In this study, protective effects of insoluble-bound polyphenol extracts from adlay seed against H2O2-induced oxidative stress in HepG2 cells were investigated. Each fraction of insoluble-bound polyphenol extracts from adlay seed was obtained by separating with Sephadex LH-20 column and semi-preparative HPLC. Ferulic acid was found being the main active component of insoluble-bound polyphenol in adlay seed. The cytoprotective effects of ferulic acid against oxidative challenge were determined by cell viability, intracellular reactive oxygen stress change in HepG2 cells, western blot and apoptosis by flow cytometry. Ferulic acid had a positive correlation with cell viability and a negative correlation with apoptosis. Ferulic acid treatment increased the activity of GSH-PX, CAT, γ-GCS. Moreover, the nuclear factor E2 related factor (Nrf2) protein expression in the ferulic acid group positively correlated with the HO-1, GCLC and NQO1 protein levels. Thus the results demonstrated that ferulic acid, the main active component of insoluble-bound polyphenol in adlay seed could ameliorate H2O2-induced oxidative stress in HepG2 cells via Nrf2 signalling. The research can provide a reference for the in-depth study of its regulatory mechanism and the development of antioxidant related functional food and health products.

Abstract
In this study, the adsorption/desorption characteristics of rapeseed meal polysaccharides extract on four resins (HP-20, D3520, XAD-16, and AB-8) were evaluated. The results indicated that HP-20 resin had the best purification effect. Based on static adsorption test, the kinetics and isotherms of the four resins for protein and polysaccharide were investigated. The adsorption test showed that the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Freundlich isotherm model were more suitable for explanation of the adsorption process for protein and polysaccharide. Static desorption test showed that the highest protein desorption ratios of HP-20, D3520, and AB-8 resins could be obtained with 60% ethanol solution as eluate, and the highest protein desorption ratios of XAD-16 resin could be obtained with 40% ethanol solution as eluate. Dynamic adsorption/desorption tests of HP-20 resin showed that the deproteinization ratio was 91% and the polysaccharide recovery ratio was 62% when the treatment amount was 1.5 BV. Compared with three traditional methods, HP-20 resin adsorption method that the deproteinization ratio was 82% was more potent than the three traditional methods for purifying polysaccharides from rapeseed meal. In addition, UV/vis spectroscopy showed that most of the protein was absorbed by resins, and FT-IR spectroscopy indicated that the purity of the polysaccharide after purification was improved. Rapeseed meal polysaccharides could be effectively deproteinized using HP-20 resin, and it was suitable for purifying polysaccharides from rapeseed meal.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biomass waste, including fruit and vegetable residues, poses a serious challenge to the environment. This demands novel approaches for handling and disposing of it in a safe manner. However, such waste is extremely rich in bioactive components, which are considered to have a beneficial impact on health. This has led to the recovery of high-value compounds from biomass waste before finally disposing of it. The present investigation reveals the use of green solvents such as eutectic mixtures composed of choline chloride with three different hydrogen bond donors like sucrose (4:1), urea (1:2), and sorbitol (3:1) as extractants for recovering valuable phenolic antioxidants from onion peel. RESULTS A deep eutectic solvent system consisting of choline chloride:urea (ChCl:urea) showed the best result for total phenolic content from onion peel while the other two eutectic mixtures showed relatively lower extraction efficiency. Experiments were performed with different molar ratios of ChCl:U (1:1-1:3) and liquid-solid ratios (10:1-60:1) under a temperature range (50-90 °C) and a time range (60-150 min). Taguchi's method was employed to maximize the extraction of polyphenolic antioxidants from onion peel, resulting in optimal conditions: extraction temperature 60 °C, time 120 min, liquid to solid ratio 50:1 and molar ratio of ChCl:U as 1:2. Under optimum conditions, the corresponding TPC value of the extract was found to be highest at 222.97 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE) g-1 dw. CONCLUSION Major flavonoids - quercetin, kaempferol, and myricetin - were identified and quantified in the extracts. Moreover, high reducing power (PR ) value was reported in the case of ChCl:U extract, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity was found to be higher in ChCl:So extract. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The polyphenols (PF) from Platycladus Orientalis (L.) Franco leaves were purified by using 10 different macroporous adsorption resins. HPD-722 resin showed the best adsorption and desorption capacities. The static and dynamic adsorption and desorption of PF on HPD-722 resin were studied and the total polyphenols were separated into two fractions, PF-A and PF-B. PF-A and PF-B demonstrated similar scavenging activity of free radical (DPPH, ABTS, hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion). The scavenging activity of PF-A and PF-B on hydroxyl radical and superoxide anion radical reached the equal levels of vitamin C and gallic acid. The IC50 value of PF-A for hydroxyl radical scavenging activity and superoxide anion radical scavenging activity were 0.50 and 0.56 mg/mL, while those of PF-B were 0.61 and 0.64 mg/mL. PF-A and PF-B could reduce the overproduction of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, Pro-IL-1β, and IL-6) induced by lipopolysaccharide and their protein expression in THP-1 cells. PF-B exhibited better anti-inflammatory effect than PF-A in the dosage range of 1.0-4.0 µg/mL. Structural identification of PF-A and PF-B were conducted by HPLC-MS/MS. Ten polyphenol compounds were identified in PF-A and PF-B, respectively, by HPLC-MS/MS, including quercetin, apigenin, myricetin, and so on. Molecular docking studies indicated that apigenin, myricetin, luteolin, kaempferol, and quercetin effectively inhibit xanthine oxidase by forming hydrogen bonds with the amino acid residues and binding to the active site of the enzyme. The results might supply useful information for better understanding the chemical structure, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities of Platycladuso (L.) Franco leaves polyphenols. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This study demonstrated that polyphenols from P. orientalis (L.) Franco leaves have the potential applications as functional food ingredient for the prevention and treatment of gout and inflammation, hyperuricemia and gout.

Abstract
AbstractThe adsorption/desorption characteristics, modeling and properties of anthocyanins from extruded red cabbage juice by macroporous resins were investigated. The static adsorption and desorption capacities of red cabbage anthocyanins on five macroporous resins were measured and compared. The X-5 resin showed the best capacities and was selected for the adsorption kinetics, isotherms and elution studies. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model were used to describe the adsorption process and mechanism. Dynamic adsorption and desorption tests were performed on a fixed-bed column, and the loading and eluent conditions were optimized. The purity of anthocyanins in freeze-dried purified powder by the resin adsorption process is 21.3 ± 0.9 wt % and shows better stability in the air than the unpurified one. Finally, the antioxidant activity and color properties including color density, color intensity, color tonality and degradation index of the purified powders were measured.

Abstract
In this study, the impact of ultrasound on the adsorption and desorption features of blueberry anthocyanins on macroporous resins were studied. Sonication was performed at 106-279 W/L and 20-30 °C in a pulsed mode, respectively. Generally, ultrasound treatments within the selected experimental range enhanced the adsorption/desorption process of anthocyanins on macroporous resins. The recovery of blueberry anthocyanins after ultrasound-assisted adsorption/desorption process at 279 W/L and 20 °C was 82.12%, which was 52.84% higher than that obtained after adsorption/desorption with shaking at 100 rpm. Meanwhile, higher acoustic energy density (AED) levels and lower temperatures benefited the adsorption process through enhancing the adsorption capacity and shortening the equilibrium time, whereas higher temperatures promoted the desorption process. Furthermore, malvidin-3-galactoside had the highest adsorption and desorption capacities among all the studied monomeric anthocyanins. No organic acids and sugars were detected after adsorption/desorption processes, indicating the successful improvement of anthocyanin purification. Sonication mainly enhanced the adsorption process by means of strengthening the formation of hydrogen bond on resins surface and increasing their surface roughness. Overall, ultrasound can be an effective tool to improve the purification of anthocyanins using macroporous resins.

Abstract
To provide further insights into the potential health-promoting antioxidants from wild rice (Zizania latifolia), which is an abundant but underutilized whole grain resource in East Asia, a partial purification based on D101 macroporous resin was carried out for the purification and enrichment of the antioxidants from the bioactive ethanol extracts of wild rice. On that basis, 34 phenolic compounds in the antioxidant fractions were identified by a high-performance liquid chromatography-linear ion trap quadrupole-Orbitrap-mass spectrometry (HPLC-LTQ-Orbitrap-MSn). The results suggested that phenolic acids could be enriched in the 10% ethanol-eluted fraction whereas flavonoids (including procyanidins and flavonoid glycosides) could be enriched in 20⁻30% ethanol-eluted fractions. A quantitative analysis determined by the multiple reaction monitoring mode of the ultra-performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-QqQ-MS/MS) revealed a high content of procyanidins in wild rice. Compared with phenolic acids, flavonoids may contribute more to the potent antioxidant activity of wild rice. This is the first study on the antioxidants from wild rice Z. latifolia. These findings provide novel information on the functional components of wild rice, and will be of value to further research and development on Z. latifolia.
