Abstract
Flame-retardant materials that are mechanically robust, low cost and non-toxic from green and renewable resources are highly demanded in many fields. In this work, aerogels of alginate extracted from seaweeds were fabricated and reinforced with nanoclay. The nanoclay particles increase the molecular ordering (crystallinity) of the aerogels through physical interactions with alginate molecules. They also served as cross-linkers and flame-retardant additives to improve the mechanical strength, elasticity, thermal stability and flame-retarding properties of the aerogels. Under exposure to a butane flame (750 °C), the aerogels maintained their structural integrity and did not produce drips. An optimal loading of nanoclay which led to the best flame retardancy (non-flammable) of the aerogel was determined. The results of this work demonstrate that alginate-nanoclay composite aerogels can be promisingly used as flame-retardant thermal insulation materials.

Abstract
Incorporating carotenoids into sodium alginate films can give them functional properties for food packaging applications. The lycopene and β-carotene were included in the biopolymer matrix at 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5% (g carotenoid/g polymer). There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in film thickness (45 ± 1 μm) of sodium alginate films with carotenoids. Nevertheless, the low quantity of carotenoids was enough to promote significant variations in the tensile properties of films. The films with lycopene or β-carotene showed lower tensile strength and elongation at break than control films. The carotenoid incorporation promoted a reduction (p < 0.05) in water vapor permeability, mainly by adding 0.5%. In the same way, it improved the light transmission and thermal stability of films and did not affect the water solubility of films. The scanning electron microscopy of films showed a homogeneous surface, but the films with lycopene or β-carotene showed a more compact structure than the control film. The sodium alginate films incorporated with 0.3% lycopene or β-carotene showed a remarkable protective effect on sunflower oil against oxidation compared with traditional commercial plastic packaging under accelerated storage conditions (heat and light). Therefore, they can be considered a potential material for food packaging purposes.

Abstract
Recently, edible films or coatings that are made from algal polysaccharides have become promising candidates for replacing plastic-based packaging materials for food storage due to their non-toxic, biodegradable, biocompatible, and bioactive characteristics. Ulvan, a significant biopolymer with unique functional properties derived from marine green algae, has been extensively used in various sectors. However, there are fewer commercial applications of this sugar in the food packaging industry compared to many other algae-derived polysaccharides, such as alginates, carrageenan, and agar. This article aims to review the unparalleled chemical composition/structure and physiochemical properties of ulvan and the latest developments in ulvan-based edible films and coatings, thus highlighting their potential applications in the food packaging industry.

Abstract
Sargassum spp. affects the Caribbean shores; thus, its remotion or valorization is a priority. This work aimed to synthesize a low-cost magnetically retrievable Hg+2 adsorbent functionalized with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) based on Sargassum. The Sargassum was solubilized to synthesize by co-precipitation a magnetic composite. A central composite design was assessed to maximize the adsorption of Hg+2. The solids yield magnetically attracted mass, and the saturation magnetizations of the functionalized composite were 60.1 ± 17.2%, 75.9 ± 6.6%, and 1.4 emu g−1. The functionalized magnetic composite yielded 29.8 ± 0.75 mg Hg+2 g−1 of chemisorption after 12 h, pH 5, and 25 °C achieving 75% Hg+2 adsorption after four reuse cycles. Crosslinking and functionalization with Fe3O4 and EDTA created differences in surface roughness as well as the thermal events of the composites. The Fe3O4@Sargassum@EDTA composite was a magnetically recovered biosorbent of Hg2+.

Abstract
The alginate industry processes more than hundred thousand tons per year of algae in Europe, discarding around 80% of the algae biomass as different solid/liquid residual streams. In this work, Saccharina latissima and Ascophyllum nodosum, their generated alginates and all residual fractions generated in the process were characterized in terms of lipid, ash, protein content, and the carbohydrate composition and antioxidant capacities analyzed. The first fraction after acid treatment (ca. 50% of the initial dry biomass) was rich in phlorotannins (15 mg GAE/g) and bioactive fucoidans (15-70%), with a high sulfation degree in A. nodosum. Two fractions generated from the solid residue, one soluble and another insoluble (Ra and Rb, respectively), constituted 9% and 5-8% of the initial biomass and showed great potential as a source of soluble protein (30% for S. latissima), and cellulose (70%) or fucoidan, respectively. Valorization strategies are suggested for these waste streams, evidencing their high potential as bioactive, texturizing or nutritional added-value ingredients for cosmetic, food, feed or pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract
Biopolymeric nanoparticulate systems hold favorable carrier properties for active delivery. The enhancement in the research interest in alginate formulations in biomedical and pharmaceutical research, owing to its biodegradable, biocompatible, and bioadhesive characteristics, reiterates its future use as an efficient drug delivery matrix. Alginates, obtained from natural sources, are the colloidal polysaccharide group, which are water-soluble, non-toxic, and non-irritant. These are linear copolymeric blocks of α-(1→4)-linked l-guluronic acid (G) and β-(1→4)-linked d-mannuronic acid (M) residues. Owing to the monosaccharide sequencing and the enzymatically governed reactions, alginates are well-known as an essential bio-polymer group for multifarious biomedical implementations. Additionally, alginate’s bio-adhesive property makes it significant in the pharmaceutical industry. Alginate has shown immense potential in wound healing and drug delivery applications to date because its gel-forming ability maintains the structural resemblance to the extracellular matrices in tissues and can be altered to perform numerous crucial functions. The initial section of this review will deliver a perception of the extraction source and alginate’s remarkable properties. Furthermore, we have aspired to discuss the current literature on alginate utilization as a biopolymeric carrier for drug delivery through numerous administration routes. Finally, the latest investigations on alginate composite utilization in wound healing are addressed.

Abstract
Enteromorpha prolifera belonging to the chlorophyta phylum is the main pollutant of "green tide", and propagates rapidly in recent years. However, there is almost no high-value enteromorpha treatment method at present. This study aimed to extract cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) from enteromorpha and prepare the CNC reinforced films based on alginate, carrageenan and shellac for food packaging. The effects of alginate, κ-carrageenan, cellulose nanocrystals and glycerin on the CNC reinforced alginate/carrageenan films (AC films) properties were studied systematically in this work. The results showed that the mechanical properties, swelling properties, and barrier properties of the AC could be adjusted by the concentrations of the different components. In addition, response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the formula of the AC used for food packaging according to the requirements of the practical application. Furthermore, in order to further improve the food packaging capacity of the composite films, shellac was added to the optimized alginate/carrageenan films (OAC films) to obtain the shellac optimized alginate/carrageenan films (SOAC films). Finally, the OAC films and SOAC films showed excellent properties to extend the storage time of chicken breast and cherry tomatoes in the food storage experiment.

Abstract
The photoprotective skincare segment is in high demand to meet consumer concerns on UV-induced skin damage, with a recent trend towards sunscreen alternatives with a natural origin. In this study, the use of natural ingredients, either from terrestrial or marine origin, in a panel of 444 sunscreen commercial formulations (2021) was analyzed. Ingredients from terrestrial organisms represent the large majority found in the analyzed sunscreen formulations (48%), whereas marine ingredients are present only in 13% of the analyzed products. A deeper analysis regarding the most prevalent families of ingredients from terrestrial and marine organisms used as top ingredients is also presented, as well as their mechanisms of action. This study provides an up-to-date overview of the sunscreen market regarding the use of natural ingredients, which is of relevance for scientists involved in the development of new sunscreens to identify opportunities for innovation.

Abstract
In the current study, starch-based active nanocomposite films reinforced with cellulosic nanocrystals (CNCs) of Kudzu were developed as an alternative option to existing biodegradable plastic packaging. Firstly, Kudzu CNCs were prepared by subjecting Kudzu fibers to the processes such as depolymerization followed by bleaching, acid hydrolysis, and mechanical dispersion. Further, nanocomposite films were formulated by blending pearl millet starch (PMS) and glycerol (30%) with different Kudzu CNCs compositions (0-7 wt%) using the solution casting process. The prepared PMS/Kudzu CNCs nanocomposite films were analyzed for their morphological (SEM and TEM), thermal (TGA and DSC), structural (FTIR), mechanical (tensile strength (TS), elongation at break and young modulus), and water barrier properties. The PMS/Kudzu CNCs films possessed improved crystallinity, heat and moisture-barrier properties, TS, and young-modulus after reinforcement. The optimum reinforcer concentration of CNCs was 5%. The Kudzu CNCs reinforced starch film offers a promising candidate for developing biodegradable films.

Abstract
Cheese whey, one of the most abundant by-products of the dairy industry, causes economic losses and pollution problems. In this study, deproteinised sweet whey was fermented by Pseudomonas taetrolens LMG 2336 to produce a prebiotic compound (lactobionic acid, LBA). Endotoxins produced by these microorganisms were successfully removed using microfiltration techniques, allowing the fermented whey permeate to be used in the food industry. The fermented whey permeate was used to develop prebiotic edible films by adding two different concentrations of gelatine (0.45 and 0.9 g gelatine g−1 LBA; LBA45 and LBA90). Furthermore, Lactobacillus plantarum CECT 9567 was added as a probiotic microorganism (LP45 and LP90), creating films containing both a prebiotic and a probiotic. The mechanical properties, water solubility, light transmittance, colour, and microstructure of the films were fully characterised. Additionally, the LBA and probiotic concentration in LP45 and LP90 were monitored under storage conditions. The strength and water solubility of the films were affected by the presence of LBA, and though all these films were homogeneous, they were slightly opaque. In LP45 and LP90, the presence of LBA as a prebiotic improved the viability of L. plantarum during cold storage, compared to the control. Therefore, these films could be used in the food industry to coat different foodstuffs to obtain functional products.

Abstract
Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of polyphenols from the brown seaweeds Ascophyllum nodosum leaves a solid phase where alginates can be extracted. This study characterizes alginates extracted after the UAE process, with and without an intermediate drying stage at different temperatures (50 and 90 °C) producing sequentially two bioactive compounds from a unique raw material. FT-IR and 1H NMR analyses showed the high purity of alginates with features in the range of commercial alginates. Drying at high temperature decreased average block length and viscosity average molecular weight (Mv) of alginate from 428 to 133 kg/mol. Steady-shear curves (shear-thinning behaviour) and viscoelasticity (liquid like character) features depended clearly on Mv. Solutions of alginates with high Mv were more viscous and the elastic character was more relevant. Cox-Merz rule was only accomplished within the semi-dilute regimes of alginate concentration. Tested process conditions allow the production of alginates with different properties.

Abstract
Usage of seaweeds as a functional food/food ingredient is very limited due to paucity of scientific information about variations in the nutritional composition of seaweeds under diverse climatic conditions. Sargassum wightii and Ulva rigida seaweeds are found abundantly on the Southern Indian coastline and were thoroughly evaluated in this work. Crude fiber and lipid of S. wightii were higher (24.93 ± 0.23% and 3.09 ± 0.41%, respectively) as compared to U. rigida; however, U. rigida had higher crude protein content (27.11 ± 0.62%). Evaluation of mineral and CHNS content indicated that the concentration of potassium, magnesium, and calcium was 1.36 ± 0.08 mg/g, 8.39 ± 0.80 mg/g, and 14.03 ± 3.46 mg/g, respectively, that was higher in the S. wightii, whereas U. rigida contained higher value of iron, carbon, and sulphur (0.70 ± 0.13 mg/g, 37.72 ± 4.63%, and 2.61 ± 0.16%, respectively). Swelling capacity (19.42 ± 0.00 mL/g DW to 22.66 ± 00 mL/g DW), water-holding capacity (6.15 ± 0.08 g/g DW to 6.38 ± 0.14 g/g DW), and oil-holding capacity (2.96 ± 0.13 g/g DW) of U. rigida were significantly (
) higher as compared to S. wightii. It was observed from DSC thermograms that S. wightii can be safely processed for food formulations even at a temperature of 134°C. The thermograms also revealed changes in the sulphated polysaccharide (fucoidan) profile due to the presence of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups with denaturation of proteins. TGA of S. wightii and U. rigida showed degradation temperature within the range of 200–300°C due to divergent polysaccharide compositions. FTIR spectroscopy suggested the presence of phenolic groups in both seaweeds (at 1219 cm−1). Results of the study suggested that the manufacturing of functional food products from seaweeds could be beneficial and may aid in social upliftment of cultivators/fishermen.

Abstract
The black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), Hermetia illucens (Linnaeus), has been largely utilized for animal feed. Due to its interesting composition, BSFL has great potential to be further implemented in the human diet. Herein we compared the flour and protein extract composition based on their moisture, ash, amino acids, mineral, and protein content. To have wide knowledge on protein profile and behavior, SDS-page electrophoresis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to give information about protein structure and thermal stability, respectively. The flour and protein extract contained respectively 37.3% and 61.1% of protein. DSC graph reported a glass transition temperature around 30 °C, recognizable by a shift in the curve, and an endothermic peak for solid melting at around 200 °C. FTIR analysis showed the main amide bands (A, B, I, II, III) for the flour and protein extract. The foam properties of BSFL protein extract were explored under different temperatures treatment, and the best foam stability was reached at 85 °C with 15 min of treatment. The data highlight the promising techno-functional properties of BSFL protein extract, and that the nutritional composition might be suitable for further use of BSFL as food fortification system.

Abstract
The bioactivity and gelling properties of a carbohydrate-rich algal extract obtained from locally harvested Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed using a chemical-free approach were investigated for its potential interest in food applications. Physicochemical characterisation and compositional analysis of the extract, using FTIR, biochemical methods and monosaccharide analysis, confirmed the presence of alginates and fucoidans, although the main polysaccharide present in it was laminarin. Significant amounts of phenolic compounds (~9 mg phloroglucinol/100 mg sample) were also detected. As a result, the extract exhibited good antioxidant activity. It also showed promising prebiotic potential, promoting the growth of beneficial Lactobacillus sp. and Bifidobacteria sp. when compared with commercial prebiotics, but not that of pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli or P. aeruginosa. The gelling properties of the raw extract were explored to optimize hydrogel bead formation by external gelation in CaCl2 solutions. This was enhanced at neutral to alkaline pHs and high extract and CaCl2 concentrations. The mechanical strength, nano- and microstructure of the hydrogel beads prepared under optimised conditions were determined using compression tests, synchrotron small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was concluded that the raw algal extract at neutral pH had potential for use as a gelling agent, although further enrichment with alginate improved the mechanical properties of the obtained gels. The advantages and disadvantages of applying the non-purified algal extract in comparison with purified carbohydrates are discussed. Carbohydrate-rich extract from A. nodosum obtained using a chemical-free process. The algal extract exhibited in-vitro antioxidant and prebiotic properties. Beads were obtained by external gelation of the extract at neutral to alkaline pH. Enrichment with alginate improved the mechanical properties of the gels. Components of the extract acted as fillers, reducing structural changes upon drying.

Abstract
Bio-based packaging materials are gaining importance due to their biodegradability, sustainability and environmental friendliness. To control the food quality and improve the food safety standards, proteins polysaccharide and lipid-based packaging films are enriched with bioactive and functional substances. However, poor permeability and mechanical characteristics are the challenging areas in their commercialization. Scientists and researchers are using a combination of techniques i.e. hydrogels, crosslinking, etc. to improve the intermolecular forces between different components of the film formulation to counter these challenges More recently, biodegradable packaging materials, sometimes edible, are also used for the delivery of functional ingredients which reveals their potential for drug delivery to counter the nutrient deficiency problems. This study highlights the potentials of bio-based materials i.e. proteins, polysaccharides, lipids, etc. to develop biodegradable packaging materials. It also explores the additives used to improve the physicochemical and mechanical properties of biodegradable packaging materials. Furthermore, it highlights the novel trends in biodegradable packaging from a food safety and quality point of view.

Abstract
Natural biopolymers are an interesting resource for edible films production, as they are environmentally friendly packaging materials. The possibilities of the application of main animal proteins and natural polysaccharides are considered in the review, including the sources, structure, and limitations of usage. The main ways for overcoming the limitations caused by the physico-chemical properties of biopolymers are also discussed, including composites approaches, plasticizers, and the addition of crosslinking agents. Approaches for the production of biopolymer-based films and coatings are classified according to wet and dried processes and considered depending on biopolymer types. The methods for mechanical, physico-chemical, hydration, and uniformity estimation of edible films are reviewed.

Abstract
Abstract
The indiscriminate use of films as synthetic primary packaging, for the conservation and transport of fruit and vegetable products in postharvest, causes disposal problems. In the present work, films based on sodium alginate were synthesized and characterized, with alginate as a biopolymer matrix, glycerol (plasticizer), oleic acid (control of hydrophilicity), and calcium chloride (cross-linking agent). The dynamic mechanical, thermal, structural, and hydrophobicity properties were studied. In the case of dynamic mechanical properties, they were analyzed at a temperature of −50°C, because food packaging goes through storage during its cold chain, showing biofilm stability under these conditions. On the other hand, infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that the carboxylate and carboxy functional groups serve as a link for all the components, and oleic acid is also serving as a plasticizer and, to a lesser degree, as a hydrophilicity controller.

Abstract
This work was conducted to evaluate the compatibility between physicochemical, antioxidant and morphological properties of polysaccharide (FRP) extracted from red marine alga Falkenbergia rufolanosa reinforced by poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composed films at different ratios of FRP/PVA: F1 (70:30), F2 (50:50), F3 (30:70) and PVA (100% PVA) and the potential wound healing effects. As assessed, FRP/PVA prepared films were heterogeneous, slightly opaque with a rough surface as ascertained by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and colorimetric parameters. Even, X-ray diffraction and glass transition results revealed a semi-crystalline structure of FRP composed films which decreased with increasing PVA ratios. The antioxidant activities of composite films depicted that F1 exhibited the highest antioxidant activity in vitro. Therefore, F1 was found to promote significantly the wound healing, after eight days of treatment, evidenced by higher wound appearance scores and a higher content of collagen (885.12 ± 20.35 mg/g of tissue) confirmed by histological examination, when compared with control, CYTOL BASIC® and PVA-treated groups. All together, the marine-derived polysaccharide gave a substantial pledge for the development of biodegradable films as a potent antioxidant material and a promising agent for tissue regeneration.

Abstract
Macroalgae have been commercially exploited as food and for the production of phycocolloids, but they also contain compounds with potential in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, cosmetic, chemical and energetic applications. The biorefinery concept applied to seaweed facilitates the extraction of different constituents ensuring full utilization of resources and generating few residues through a succession of steps. Seaweed biorefineries are less advanced than those based on terrestrial biomass and the design of efficient processes requires further study. This review presents practical successful examples to obtain two or more commercially valuable components from red seaweeds. The selected processes consist on cascading stages of both conventional and alternative techniques to illustrate different possible valorization strategies.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of functional properties of the polysaccharide-based component and their application in developing edible film and coating for the food processing sector.
Design/methodology/approach
In this review study, approximately 271 research and review articles focusing on studies related to polysaccharide-based components and their film-forming properties. This article also focused on the application of polysaccharide-based edible film in the food sector.
Findings
From the literature reviewed, polysaccharide components and components-based edible film/coating is the biodegradable and eco-friendly packaging of the materials and directly consumed by the consumer with food. It has been reported that the polysaccharide components have excellent properties such as being nontoxic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antifungal and with good nutrients. The polysaccharide-based edible film has lipid and gas barrier properties with excellent transparency and mechanical strength. In various studies, researchers worked on the development of polysaccharide-based edible film and coating by incorporating plant based natural antioxidants. This was primarily done for obtaining improved physical and chemical properties of the edible film and coating. In future, the technology of developing polysaccharide-based edible film and coating could be used for extending the shelf life and preserving the quality of fruits and vegetables at a commercial level. There is more need to understand the role of edible packaging and sustainability in the food and environment sector.
Originality/value
Through this review paper, possible applications of polysaccharide-based components and their function property in the formation of the edible film and their effect on fruits, vegetables and other food products are discussed after detailed studies of literature from thesis and journal article.

Abstract
Insulin entrapped alginate-gum tragacanth (ALG-GT) hydrogels at different ALG replacement ratios (100, 75, 50, 25) were prepared through an ionotropic gelation method, followed by chitosan (CH) polyelectrolyte complexation. A mild gelation process without the use of harsh chemicals was proposed to improve insulin efficiency. Retention of almost the full amount of entrapped insulin in a simulated gastric environment and sustained insulin release in simulated intestinal buffer indicated the pH sensitivity of the gels. Insulin release from hydrogels with different formulations showed significant differences ( p < 0.05). Time domain (TD) NMR relaxometry experiments also showed the differences for different formulations, and the presence of CH revealed that ALG-GT gel formulation could be used as an oral insulin carrier at optimum concentrations. The hydrogels formulated from biodegradable, biocompatible, and nontoxic natural polymers were seen as promising devices for potential oral insulin delivery.

Abstract
Sodium alginate from Nizimuddinia zanardini (an Iranian brown algae) was extracted with acid and alkaline solutions, partially and totally hydrolyzed and analyzed for its biochemical composition. 1H NMR spectroscopy, SEC-MALLS, HPAEC and FT-IR were performed to determine its structure and its physico-chemical properties. This alginate has a M/G ratio of 1.1, a molecular weight of 103 kDa, a polydispersity index of 1.22, and an intrinsic viscosity of 342 mL/g. Its antioxidant activity was tested by DPPH radical scavenging showing its potential for food preservation. Rheological properties of solutions of this alginate with concentrations between 1 and 5% (w/v) in water and 0.5 M NaCl were investigated indicating a Newtonian fluid type behaviour in water and a shear thinning fluid type behaviour in NaCl solutions.

Abstract
The discharge of inadequately treated or untreated industrial wastewaters has greatly contributed to the release of contaminants into the environment, including toxic metals. Toxic metals are persistent and bioaccumulative, being their removal from wastewaters prior to release into water bodies of great concern. Literature reports the use of brown marine macroalgae for toxic metals removal from aqueous solutions as an economic and eco-friendly technique, even when applied to diluted solutions. Minor attention has been given to the application of this technique in the treatment of real wastewaters, which present a complex composition that can compromise the biosorption performance. Therefore, the main goal of this comprehensive review is to critically outline studies that: (i) applied brown marine macroalgae as natural cation exchanger for toxic metals removal from real and complex matrices; (ii) optimised the biosorption process in a fixed-bed column, which was further scaled-up to pilot plants. An overview of toxic metals sources, chemistry and toxicity, which are relevant aspects to understand and develop treatment techniques, is initially presented. The problem of water resources pollution by toxic metals and more specifically the participation of metal finishing industries in the environmental contamination are issues also covered. The current and potential decontamination methods are presented including a discussion of their advantages and drawbacks. The literature on biosorption was reviewed in detail, considering especially the ion exchange properties of cell wall constituents, such as alginate and fucoidan, and their role in metal sequestration. Besides that, a detailed description of biosorption process design, especially in continuous mode, and the application of mechanistic models is addressed.

Abstract
Polysaccharide blended whey protein isolate (WPI) hydrogels were developed for the delivery of black carrot ( Daucus carota) concentrate as bioactive agent in simulated gastric fluid (SGF). Pectin (PC), gum tragacanth (GT), and xanthan gum (XG) were blended as additional polymers to modulate the release characteristics of the WPI hydrogels. Experiments showed that sole whey protein (C), XG, and GT blended hydrogels possessed restricted release profiles 67%, 61%, and 67%, respectively, whereas PC samples attained higher release rates (83%) ( p < 0.05). Interactions between polymers and aqueous medium were analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry. C (82 ms) and GT (84 ms) hydrogels attained higher T2 values than PC (74 ms) and XG (73 ms) samples in SGF. Hardness of only XG hydrogels increased from 1.9 to 4.1 N after gastric treatment. Physicochemical changes within hydrogels during release were also investigated, and hydrogels were proved to be appropriate for desired delivery purposes.
