Abstract
An 8-week growth experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary leucine on growth performance, body composition, and gene expression of hepatic nutrient metabolism in the largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Six isonitrogenous (49.87%) diets with graded leucine levels (2.62, 3.07, 3.60, 3.87, 4.20, 4.71% of dry diet) were fed to triplicate groups with 20 juvenile fish (20.00 ± 0.13 g). The results revealed that the specific growth rate (SGR) and weight gain (WG) increased significantly with increasing dietary leucine levels, reached their maximal value in the Leu-4.20% groups, and then decreased slightly. Although the feed conversion ratio (FCR) showed decreasing trends, no significant difference was detected. Leucine supplementation significantly improved the content of body protein and total plasma protein (TP). Additionally, a higher expression level of target of rapamycin (TOR) and ribosomal protein S6 (S6) mRNA was observed in the Leu-3.87% and Leu-4.20% diets, whereas the GCN2 (general control nonderepressible2 kinase) and AFT4 (activating transcription factor 4) mRNA expression levels were suppressed. The lipid content of the body was not influenced by leucine levels, whereas the content of total triglyceride (TG) first decreased significantly with increasing dietary leucine levels from 2.62 to 3.87% and then increased with increasing leucine levels (4.20% to 4.71%). The total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) trended in a similar direction but did not achieve statistical significance (P > 0.05). The expression of insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1) was significantly elevated by dietary leucine levels, while protein kinase B (AKT) and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) expression was inconsistently upregulated. Furthermore, leucine supplementation decreased plasma glucose and hepatic glycogen contents, and the expression levels of glucokinase (GK), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), and glucose-6-phosphatase (G6pase) were significantly inhibited at 4.20% and 4.71% leucine diets. Analyses of the change in SGR and FCR using the quadratic regression model estimated that the optimum dietary leucine requirement of juvenile largemouth bass was 4.42% and 4.63% of the dry diet (8.86% and 9.28% of dietary protein), respectively.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of yeast hydrolysate (YH) from sugar byproducts on various parameters in Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). The study found no significant differences in water quality parameters across all treatment tanks, ensuring that the observed effects were not due to environmental variations. There were no significant differences in growth parameters between the control group and groups receiving YH at different dosages. However, the group given YH at 10.0 g/kg feed exhibited a notably higher survival rate and higher expression of growth-related genes (IGF-2 and RAP-2A) in various shrimp tissues. YH was associated with enhanced immune responses, including lysozyme activity, NBT dye reduction, bactericidal activity, and phagocytic activity. Notably, the 10.0 g/kg feed group displayed the highest phagocytic index, indicating a dose-dependent immune response. Expression of immune-related genes (ALF, LYZ, ProPO, and SOD) was upregulated in various shrimp tissues. This upregulation was particularly significant in the gills, hepatopancreas, intestine, and hemocytes. While total Vibrio counts remained consistent, a reduction in green Vibrio colonies was observed in the intestine of shrimp treated with YH. YH, especially at 5.0 and 10.0 g/kg feed dosages, significantly increased survival rates and RPS values in response to AHPND infection. The findings of this study suggest that incorporating additives derived from yeast byproducts with possible prebiotic properties obtained from sugar byproducts can lead to positive results in terms of enhancing growth performance, immunity, histological improvements, and resistance to V. parahaemolyticus, the causative agent of acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND).

Abstract
The effects of dietary supplementation of Clostridium butyricum (CB) on growth performance, serum biochemistry, antioxidant activity, mRNA levels of immune-related genes and resistance to hypoxia stress were studied in largemouth bass. Feed with CB0 (control, 0 CFU/kg), CB1 (4.3×108 CFU/kg), CB2 (7.5×108 CFU/kg), CB3 (1.5×109 CFU/kg) and CB4 (3.2×109 CFU/kg) CB for 56 days, and then a 3 h hypoxic stress experiment was performed. The results showed that dietary CB significantly increased the WGR (weight gain rate), SGR (specific growth rate), PDR (protein deposition rate) and ISI (Intestosomatic index) of largemouth bass (P<0.05). Hepatic GH (growth hormone)/IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor-1) gene expression was significantly upregulated in the CB3 and CB4 groups compared with the CB0 group (P<0.05), while the FC (feed conversion) was significantly decreased (P<0.05). Serum TP (total protein) and GLU (glucose) levels were significantly higher in the CB4 group than in the CB0 group (P<0.05), while the contents of serum AST (aspartate transaminase), ALT (alanine transaminase), AKP (alkline phosphatase) and UN (urea nitrogen) in CB4 were significantly lower than those in CB0 (P<0.05). T-AOC (total antioxidant capacity), SOD (superoxide dismutase), CAT (catalase), POD (peroxidase) and GSH-Px (glutathione peroxidase) activities were significantly higher in CB3 and CB4 groups than in CB0 group (P<0. 05). The liver MDA (malondialdehyde) content of CB1, CB2, CB3 and CB4 groups was significantly higher than that of CB0 group (P<0. 05). The relative expressions of IL-1β (interleukin 1β), TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor α) and TLR22 (toll-like receptor-22) genes in CB2, CB3 and CB4 groups were significantly lower than those in CB0 group (P<0.05). The relative expression of IL-8 (malondialdehyde) and MyD88 (Myeloid differentiation factor 88) genes in the CB4 group was significantly lower than that in the CB0 group (P<0.05). The liver LZM (lysozyme) content of CB2, CB3 and CB4 groups was significantly higher than that of CB0 group (P<0. 05). The relative expression of IL-10 (interleukin 10) and TGF-β (transforming growth factor β) genes in the CB4 group was significantly higher than that in the CB0 group (P<0.05). Under hypoxic stress for 3 h, the CMR of CB0 group was significantly higher than that of CB1, CB2, CB3 and CB4 groups (P<0.05). Dietary CB can improve the growth performance and resistance to hypoxic stress of largemouth bass by regulating the expression of GH/IGF-1 gene and inflammatory factors and inhibiting TLR22/MyD88 signaling pathway.

Abstract
The present study investigated the sequential regulation signals of high-carbohydrate diet (HCD)-induced hepatic lipid deposition in gibel carp (Carassius gibelio). Two isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets, containing 25% (normal carbohydrate diet, NCD) and 45% (HCD) corn starch, were formulated to feed gibel carp (14.82 ± 0.04 g) for 8 weeks. The experimental fish were sampled at 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th week. In HCD group, the hyperlipidemia and significant hepatic lipid deposition (oil red O area and triglyceride content) was found at 4th, 6th, and 8th week, while the significant hyperglycemia was found at 2nd, 4th, and 8th week, compared to NCD group (P < 0.05). HCD induced hepatic lipid deposition via increased hepatic lipogenesis (acc, fasn, and acly) but not decreased hepatic lipolysis (hsl and cpt1a). When compared with NCD group, HCD significantly elevated the hepatic sterol regulatory element binding proteins 1 (SREBP1) signals (positive hepatocytes and fluorescence intensity) at 4th, 6th, and 8th week (P < 0.05). The hepatic SREBP1 signals increased from 2nd to 6th week, but decreased at 8th week due to substantiated insulin resistance (plasma insulin levels, plasma glucose levels, and P-AKTSer473 levels) in HCD group. Importantly, the hepatic carbohydrate response element binding protein (ChREBP) signals (positive hepatocytes, fluorescence intensity, and expression levels) were all significantly elevated by HCD-induced glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) accumulation at 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th week (P < 0.05). Compared to 2nd and 4th week, the hepatic ChREBP signals and G6P contents was significantly increased by HCD at 6th and 8th week (P < 0.05). The HCD-induced G6P accumulation was caused by the significantly increased expression of hepatic gck, pklr, and glut2 (P < 0.05) but not 6pfk at 4th, 6th, and 8th week, compared to NCD group. These results suggested that the HCD-induced hepatic lipid deposition was mainly promoted by SREBP1 in earlier stage and by ChREBP in later stage for gibel carp. This study revealed the sequential regulation pathways of the conversion from feed carbohydrate to body lipid in fish.

Abstract
An eight-week feeding trial was performed to evaluate the effects of yeast hydrolysate (YH) supplementation in a low-fishmeal diet on the growth, immune responses, intestinal histology and disease resistance of whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). Five experimental diets were produced by supplementing YH at 0 (CON), 0.5 (YH0.5), 1 (YH1), 2 (YH2) and 4 (YH4) % to a basal diet containing 10% fishmeal and compared with a positive control with 25% fishmeal (FM25). Shrimp with an initial average weight of 0.43 ± 0.005 g (mean ± SD) were stocked in 18 tanks and fed the experimental diets (38% protein and 8% lipid) four times a day. Results showed that shrimp fed the FM25 diet exhibited significantly higher final body weight, weight gain, specific growth rate and protein efficiency ratio than those fed CON, YH0.5, YH1 and YH2 diets (p < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences between shrimp fed the YH4 and FM25 diets (p > 0.05). In addition, there were no significant differences in whole-body proximate composition, hemolymph biochemical parameters and non-specific immune responses among treatments. Intestinal villi length and muscular layer thickness of shrimp fed the YH4 and FM25 diets were significantly higher than the other groups. At the end of the bacterial (Vibrio parahaemolyticus) challenge test, shrimp fed YH4 and FM25 diets showed a significantly higher survival rate than those of shrimp fed CON, YH0.5 and YH1 (p < 0.05). These results suggest that supplementing 4% YH in diet containing 10% fishmeal could beneficially influence growth, intestinal morphology and disease resistance of whiteleg shrimp.

Abstract
Plant proteins have been increasingly used as sustainable substitutes for fish meal (FM) in aquafeeds; however, their high inclusion level compromises fish performance. The objective of this study was to examine whether yeast hydrolysate (YH) supplementation can improve the utilisation of high soybean meal (SM) diet and ameliorate its potential deteriorating impacts in pikeperch (Sander lucioperca). A basal diet was formulated using 44% FM, and four additional diets were produced by replacing 30 or 60% of FM with SM with or without the addition of 2% YH (FM, SM30, SM60, SM30 + YH, and SM60 + YH diets). Each diet was fed to three groups of fish (35.3 ± 0.10 g, 150 fish per group) to visual satiety four times daily for 70 days. Fish growth was not impacted by FM replacement level or YH application. However, SM60 group exhibited markedly higher feed conversion ratio and lower survival rate than those fed the FM- and YH-supplemented diets (P < 0.05). The highest and the lowest protein efficiency ratio values were obtained for the SM30 + YH and SM60 groups, respectively. Whole-body lipid content decreased in SM60 and SM60 + YH groups, and muscle lipid decreased in all the replacement groups. Serum triglyceride and glucose concentrations tended to decrease as FM replacement level increased. The highest alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities were detected in the SM60 group, and YH addition significantly decreased the AST and LDH activities. Serum lysozyme activity decreased in SM30, SM60 and SM60 + YH groups. Serum myeloperoxidase and antiprotease activities decreased in SM60 group, and YH supplementation improved their activities. No effects of diets were observed on serum antioxidant parameters such as catalase activity and malondialdehyde concentration, and gut morphological indices. Number of goblet cells in midgut decreased by increasing the SM inclusion level and a slight improvement was observed by YH application. These findings suggest that YH supplementation has the potential to support the replacement of up to 60% FM with defatted SM in pikeperch feed without deteriorating growth, feed utilisation, and survival rate. Further, YH incorporation mitigated the damaging impacts of high SM diet on liver function and non-specific immune response.

Abstract
The active ingredients extracted from yeast are important for regulating animal health. The aim of the current research was to explore the impacts of dietary yeast glycoprotein (YG) on the growth performance, intestinal morphology, antioxidant capacity, immunity and disease resistance of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). A total of 375 juvenile fish (6.00 ± 0.03 g) were allocated into 15 fiberglass tanks. Triplicate tanks were assigned to each diet. The dietary YG inclusion was as follows: the first group was given a high fishmeal diet (40% fishmeal, 0% YG) (FM) and the second group was given a low fishmeal diet (30% fishmeal and 15% soybean meal, 0% YG) (LFM). The fish in the third, fourth and fifth groups were fed the LFM diet supplemented with 0.5% (LFM+YG0.5), 1.0% (LFM+YG1.0) and 2.0% (LFM+YG2.0) YG, respectively. After a 60- day feeding trial, a challenge test using A. hydrophila was carried out. The results showed that the final body weight (FBW) and weight gain rate (WGR) in the LFM+YG2.0 group were significantly higher than those in the LFM group and were no significantly different from those in the FM group. This may be partially related to the activation of the target of rapamycin (TOR) signaling pathway. Dietary YG supplementation enhanced intestinal physical barriers by upregulating the intestinal tight junction protein related genes (claudin1, occludin and zo2) and improving the structural integrity of the gut, which may be partially associated with AMPK signaling pathway. Moreover, dietary YG increased the antioxidant capacity in the gut, upregulated intestinal anti-inflammatory factors (il-10, il1-1β and tgf-β) and downregulated proinflammatory factors (il-1β and il-8), which may be partially related to the Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathways. The results of the challenge test indicated that dietary supplementation with 0.5 or 1.0% YG can increase the disease tolerance of largemouth bass against A. hydrophila. In conclusion, the present results indicated that dietary supplementation with YG promotes the growth performance, intestinal immunity, physical barriers and antioxidant capacity of largemouth bass. In addition, 1.0% of dietary YG is recommended for largemouth bass based on the present results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intestinal inflammation is the main risk factor causing intestinal barrier dysfunction and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) can trigger inflammatory responses in various eukaryotic species. Yeast hydrolysate (YH) possesses multi-biological effects and is received remarkable attention as a functional ingredient for improving growth performance and promoting health in animals. However, there is still inconclusive on the protective effects of dietary YH supplementation on intestinal barrier of piglets. This study was conducted to investigate the attenuate effects of YH supplementation on inflammatory responses and intestinal barrier injury in piglets challenged with LPS. METHODS Twenty-four piglets (with an average body weight of 7.42 ± 0.34 kg) weaned at 21 days of age were randomly assigned to one of two dietary treatments (12 replications with one pig per pen): a basal diet or a basal diet containing YH (5 g/kg). On the 22nd d, 6 piglets in each treatment were intraperitoneally injected with LPS at 150 μg/kg BW, and the others were injected with the same amount of sterile normal saline. Four hours later, blood samples of each piglet were collected and then piglets were euthanized. RESULTS Dietary YH supplementation increased average daily feed intake and average daily gain (P < 0.01), decreased the ratio of feed intake to gain of piglets (P = 0.048). Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection induced systemic inflammatory response, evidenced by the increase of serum concentrations of haptoglobin (HP), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). Furthermore, LPS challenge resulted in inflammatory intestinal damage, by up-regulation of the protein or mRNA abundances of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IL-1β, toll-like receptors 4 (TLR4) and phosphor-nuclear factor-κB-p65 (p-NFκB-p65) (P < 0.01), and down-regulation of the jejunal villus height, the protein and mRNA abundances of zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and occludin (OCC; P < 0.05) in jejunal mucosa. Dietary YH supplementation decreased the impaired effects of ACTH, cortisol, HP, IL-1β and diamine oxidase in serum (P < 0.05). Moreover, YH supplementation also up-regulated the jejunal villus height, protein and mRNA abundances of ZO-1 and OCC (P < 0.05), down-regulated the mRNA expressions of TNF-α and IL-1β and the protein abundances of TNF-α, IL-1β, TLR4 and p-NFκB-p65 in jejunal mucosa in LPS-challenged pigs (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION Yeast hydrolysate could attenuate inflammatory response and intestinal barrier injury in weaned piglets challenged with LPS, which was associated with the inhibition of TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway activation.

Effects of a Phytogenic Supplement Containing Olive By-Product and Green Tea Extracts on Growth Performance, Lipid Metabolism, and Hepatic Antioxidant Capacity in Largemouth Bass ( Micropterus salmoides) Fed a High Soybean Meal Diet. Abstract
A 10-week growth trial was conducted to investigate the effects of a phytogenic feed additive (PFA) containing olive by-products and green tea extracts supplemented to a reduced fishmeal/high soybean meal diet on the growth performance, hepatic antioxidant capacity, lipid metabolism, and liver health of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Three experimental diets were tested: (1) a control high fishmeal (40%) and low soybean meal (15.57%) diet (named HFM), (2) a reduced fishmeal (30%) and high soybean meal (30.97%) diet (named HSB), and (3) a HSB diet supplemented with the PFA at 500 mg/kg (named HSB+P). Each diet was assigned to four replicate tanks, each containing 30 largemouth bass (initial body weight, IBW = 48.33 ± 0.01 g). The results showed that increasing the soybean meal content in the diet did not negatively affect growth performance, whereas supplementation with PFA significantly increased weight gain and specific growth rate of largemouth bass compared to both HFM and HSB groups. Reducing fishmeal and increasing soybean meal in the diet caused oxidative stress with a higher content of ROS in the liver. However, the hepatic antioxidant capacity was enhanced, with reduced ROS and increased GSH-Px levels in the HSB+P group. Moreover, the decrease of plasma TG, LDL-C, and LDL-C/TC, and downregulation of lipogenesis and cholesterol synthesis gene expression in liver, indicated that supplementation with the PFA improved fish lipid metabolism. Protein retention efficiency was also significantly increased in largemouth bass fed the diet with PFA supplementation, which regulated (enhanced) AKT-mTOR phosphorylation. These results clearly indicated that a PFA containing olive by-product and green tea extracts can positively improve growth performance, protein retention efficiency, antioxidant capacity, and lipid metabolism of largemouth bass fed a reduced fishmeal/high soybean meal diet.

Abstract
High carbohydrate diet (HCD) causes metabolism disorder and intestinal damages in aquaculture fish. Berberine has been applied to improve obesity, diabetes and NAFLD. However, whether berberine contributes to the alleviation of HCD-induced intestinal damages in aquaculture fish is still unclear. Here we investigated the effects and mechanism of berberine on HCD-induced intestinal damages in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). We found dietary berberine (50 mg/kg) improved the physical indexes (VSI and HSI) without affecting the growth performance and survival rate of largemouth bass. Importantly, the results showed that dietary berberine reduced the HCD-induced tissue damages and repaired the barrier in the intestine of largemouth bass. We observed dietary berberine significantly suppressed HCD-induced intestinal apoptosis rate (from 31.21 to 8.35%) and the activity level of Caspase3/9 (P < 0.05) by alleviating the inflammation (il1β, il8, tgfβ, and IL-6, P < 0.05) and ER stress (atf6, xbp1, perk, eif2α, chopa, chopb, and BIP, P < 0.05) in largemouth bass. Further results showed that dietary berberine declined the HCD-induced excessive lipogenesis (oil red O area, TG content, acaca, fasn, scd, pparγ, and srebp1, P < 0.05) and promoted the lipolysis (hsl, lpl, cpt1a, and cpt2, P < 0.05) via activating adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK, P < 0.05) and inhibiting sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP1, P < 0.05) in the intestine of largemouth bass. Besides, we also found that dietary berberine significantly promoted the hepatic lipid catabolism (hsl, lpl, cpt1a, and cpt2, P < 0.05) and glycolysis (pk and ira, P < 0.05) to reduce the systematic lipid deposition in largemouth bass fed with HCD. Therefore, we elucidated that 50 mg/kg dietary berberine alleviated HCD-induced intestinal damages and improved AMPK/SREBP1-mediated lipid metabolism in largemouth bass, and evaluated the feasibility for berberine as an aquafeed additive to enhance the intestinal function of aquaculture species.

Abstract
An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of compound probiotic cultures (CPC; Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus plantarum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) on the growth performance, antioxidant capacity, non-specific immunity and disease resistance of juvenile largemouth bass. Triplicate groups of largemouth bass (average weight 42.05 ± 0.02 g), with a destiny of 30 individuals per tank, were fed diets supplemented with different concentration of compound probiotic cultures (CPC) (0%, CPC (0.0); 0.5%, CPC (0.5); 1.0%, CPC (1.0); 2.0%, CPC (2.0)). After the feeding trial, tissue samples of largemouth bass were collected and the challenge test with Aeromonas hydrophila was performed. Results indicated that the CPC supplementation produced no significant difference on the growth performance, feed utilization and body composition of largemouth bass, while significantly increased the cumulative survival rate in the Aeromonas hydrophila challenge test. Meanwhile, the inclusion of CPC elevated the hepatic antioxidant capacity, and the highest activity of antioxidant enzymes, including T-AOC, CAT, GPx and T-SOD, was observed in the CPC (2.0) group. Meanwhile, the transcription of Nrf2/keap1 and antioxidant related genes, including CAT, GPx, GST, SOD1 and SOD2, was significantly elevated with the inclusion of CPC. In addition, the inclusion of CPC improved the non-specific immunity of largemouth bass. The activity of serum lysozyme was significantly elevated in the CPC (2.0) group, while the transcription of RelA and pro-inflammatory factors, including TNF-α and IL-1β, was inhibited with the inclusion of CPC. Meanwhile, related genes potentially linked to RelA, including TLR2 and p38 MAPK, were detected that their relative expression was significantly inhibited with the inclusion of CPC. The current findings indicated that the inclusion of 2% CPC improved the antioxidant capacity, non-specific immunity and disease resistance of juvenile largemouth bass, and suggested that 2% CPC as a functional additive could be applied to the diet of juvenile largemouth bass in aquaculture practice.

Abstract
Background At present, fish meal (FM) resources are in short supply, and competition for food between humans and animals is becoming increasingly critical. Finding non-grain protein sources that can replace FM is the key to solving the rapid development of aquaculture. Methods Seven trial diets were prepared with 0 g/kg (EP0), 30 g/kg (EP3), 60 g/kg (EP6), 90 g/kg (EP9), 120 g/kg (EP12), 150 g/kg (EP15), and 180 g/kg (EP18) of enzyme-digested poultry by-product meal (EPBM) by replacing of FM. A total of 630 hybrid groupers (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus ♀ × E. lanceolatus ♂) were equally portioned into 21 tanks. At 8:00 and 16:00 each day, groupers were fed until they were full for a cumulative period of 8 weeks. Results The results showed that 30 g/kg of EPBM significantly increased the rates of weight gain and special growth (P < 0.05). Significantly higher activities of serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase were observed in the EP3 group (P < 0.05). The categories and numbers of the top 10 dominant bacteria in the phylum and genus levels were not significantly influenced by feed (P > 0.05). In the proximal intestine and distal intestine, there were significantly higher expressions of SNAT3, LAAT1, CAT2, and CAT1 in the EP3 group compared with the EP0 group (P < 0.05). In the EP3 group, the expressions of PepT1, LAAT1, B0, +AT, and CAT2 were significantly increased in MI than those in all other groups (except the EP0 group, P < 0.05). Conclusion When FM was replaced by 30 g/kg of EPBM, growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and the ability to transport amino acids and peptides of hybrid grouper were significantly improved.

Isolation, Identification and Characteristics of Aeromonas caviae from Diseased Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides). FISHES 2022. Abstract
The largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) is one of the most economically valuable fish species in China. In this study, a bacterial pathogen was isolated from the internal organs of diseased M. salmoides, and the strain was named WH21406. This isolate was identified as Aeromonas caviae on the basis of its morphology, biochemical features and 16S rDNA phylogenetic analysis. Four virulence genes related to pathogenicity, namely, flagella (fla), elastase (ela), haemolysin (hly) and aerolysin (aer), were detected in this isolate. The median lethal dosage (LD50) of A. caviae WH21406 for M. salmoides was calculated to be 3.46 × 105 CFU mL−1. The histopathological analysis showed obvious tissue damage in the gill, liver, kidney, spleen and gut of the diseased fish. The antibiotic susceptibility test demonstrated that strain WH21406 was highly sensitive to enrofloxacin, norfloxacin, streptomycin and amikacin. The results of this study provide a foundation for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of A. caviae infection in M. salmoides.

Abstract
The effects of astaxanthin on growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, antioxidant capacity, immune ability, resistance to Vibrio harveyi infection of coral trout (Plectropomus leopardus, initial weight 17.44 ± 0.05 g) were studied by 8-week feeding trial. Four iso-nitrogenous and iso-lipidic experimental diets containing astaxanthin 0 (A0), 0.05 (A1), 0.1 (A2) and 0.2 (A3) g/kg were formulated with the addition of Haematococcus pluvialis powder (astaxanthin content accounts for 100 g/kg) of 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 g/kg, separately. The feeding experiment lasted for 56 days, and it was found that supplementing the diet with astaxanthin-rich H. pluvialis powder had no significant impact on the growth performance about coral trout (P > 0.05). Compared with the A0 group, the activities of amylase, lipase, and trypsin in the liver of the A2 group was dramatically increased (P < 0.05); catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) level in serum and liver were dramatically higher in the A2 group before as well as after the challenge (P < 0.05); after the challenge, the acid phosphatase (ACP) and lysozyme (LZ) activities, and complement (C3 and C4) contents in serum and liver were significantly raised for the A2 group (P < 0.05); the liver relative expressions of copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (sod-1), manganese superoxide dismutase (sod-2), cat, acp6, akp, lz-c, immunoglobulin M (igm), c3, and c4-b in the A2 group were significantly up-regulated before and after the challenge (P < 0.05); the rate of survival follow V. harveyi challenge in the group A2 was dramatically higher (P < 0.05). In summary, this study indicated that adding 1.0 g/kg astaxanthin-rich H. pluvialis powder (the content of astaxanthin is 0.091 g/kg) could improve the digestive enzyme activity, antioxidant capacity, immunity, and the ability to resist the challenge of V. harveyi in coral trout.

Effect of Feed Supplementation with Bacillus coagulans on Nrf Gene Family Expression in Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) under Long-Term Exposure to Cd2+. FISHES 2022. Abstract
Nuclear factor-E2-related factor (Nrf) belongs to the Cap ‘n’ collar basic leucine zipper (CNC-bZIP) family, which plays an important role in the resistance to oxidative stress in the body. In this study, 12 Nrf genes were identified in the common carp genome database. Comparative genomic analysis showed that the Nrf genes of common carp had significant amplification, confirming that the common carp had experienced four genome-wide replication events. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all common carp Nrf clustered with scleractinian fish Nrf, indicating that they were highly conserved during evolution. In addition, tissue distribution results showed that most Nrf genes had a broad tissue distribution but exhibited tissue-specific expression patterns, demonstrating functional differences after WGD events. At 30 and 60 days of Cd2+ stress, most of the Nrf genes showed an increase in expression compared with the control group, indicating that they played a key role in the organism’s response to oxidative stress. To find a suitable concentration of Bacillus coagulans to activate the Nrf genes, we added three different concentrations (2.0 × 107 CFU/g, 2.0 × 108 CFU/g, and 2.0 × 109 CFU/g) of B. coagulans into the feed and defined them as L1, L2, and L3 groups, respectively. We investigated the effect of different concentrations of B. coagulans in the feed on the expression level of Nrf genes in the intestine of common carp under Cd2+ stress at 30 and 60 days. The results showed that, compared with the control/stress group, the expression of different Nrf genes was improved to varying degrees at three concentrations, and the effect of the L2 group (2.0 × 108 CFU/g) was the best. This suggests that the L2 group is the optimum concentration for activating Nrf gene expression when subjected to heavy metal Cd2+ stress and may act as an activation switch with a prominent role in the body’s resistance to oxidative stress and immune response.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Yeast hydrolysate (YH) has multiple salutary biological activities. Nevertheless, the application of YH in broiler production is limited. This study was conducted to evaluate the protective effects of YH derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae by exploring growth performance, serum parameters, organs relative weight, carcass traits, meat quality and antioxidant status of broilers. RESULTS Supplementing YH linearly and quadratically improved (P < 0.05) body weight gain and gain-to-feed ratio compared to that in the control group. Triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and total cholesterol in serum, the decline in pH and cooking loss of breast muscle, and malonaldehyde concentration in serum and liver were decreased linearly and/or quadratically by YH (P < 0.05), whereas high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in serum, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities in serum, GSH-Px activity in liver, glutathione content in serum and liver, eviscerated yield rate and chest muscle yield, and the relative weight of spleen and liver were linearly and/or quadratically increased (P < 0.05). Moreover, YH enhanced the mRNA levels of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2, heme oxygennase-1 (HO-1), GSH-Px1 and SOD1 (linear and/or quadratic, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Dietary YH beneficially affected growth performance, serum parameters, organ relative weight, carcass traits, meat quality and antioxidant status in broilers, indicating its potential application as a promising feed additive in broiler production. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of yeast culture on the growth, health and microflora of the juvenile largemouth bass fed high-starch diet. The experiment set three isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets, control (high-starch diet), HSY1 (high-starch diet with 1% yeast culture) and HSY3 (high-starch diet with 3% yeast culture). A feeding trial was conducted in largemouth bass juveniles for 8 weeks. The results indicated fish fed with 3% yeast culture not only could improve specific growth rate (SGR), but also significantly decreased hepatic lipid content, hepatic glycogen content, and hepatopancreas somatic index (HSI) compared with the control group (p<0.05). The total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities of HSY3 group significantly increased while malondialdehyde (MDA) content significantly reduced in liver compared with the control group (p<0.05). Meanwhile, the mRNA expression levels of hepatic Sod and Cat were up-regulated (p<0.05), and liver metabolism showed 111 metabolites were significantly changed in HSY3 group, liver lipid metabolism pathway remarkably changed. Besides, the intestinal anti-inflammatory cytokines were significantly up-regulated, and the pro-inflammatory cytokines were significantly down-regulated as the inclusion of yeast culture (p<0.05). Notably, HSY3 group diet up-regulated the expression of Zo-1, Claudin and Occludin in intestine compared with the other groups (p<0.05). Serum d-lactate (D-lac), diamine oxidase (DAO) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) decreased significantly with the inclusion of yeast culture (p<0.05). Furthermore, the abundance of probiotics (such as Lactobacillus, Bacillus and Bifidobacterium) increased significantly, and the abundance of intestinal potential pathogenic bacteria (Plesiomonas) decreased in HSY3 group (p<0.05). The phenotypic analysis showed that gram-negative bacteria significantly decreased while gram-positive bacteria increased in HSY3 group (p<0.05). All in all, this study revealed that supplementation of 3% yeast culture can improve the growth performance and the health of juvenile largemouth bass, and has the potential to be used as an effective synbiotics for M. salmoides.

Abstract
Micropterus salmoides is an economical important species of freshwater-cultured fish, the in-depth knowledge of its immune system is in urgent development to cope with serious infectious diseases. Piscidin is an important antimicrobial peptide (AMP) family existing in almost all teleosts. However, no piscidin has been reported in largemouth bass. In this study, three novel piscidins (MSPiscidin-1, -2, and -3) were firstly identified and characterized from the largemouth bass. The predicted mature peptides of MSPiscidin-1, -2, and -3 (consists of 24, 27, 25 amino acid residues, respectively) all adopted an amphipathic α-helical conformation representative of cationic AMPs that are important for membrane permeabilization and antibacterial activity. MSPiscidin-2 and -3 indeed displayed strong, broad-spectrum, and highly efficient antimicrobial activities in vitro against aquatic pathogens, but MSPiscidin-1 didn't show direct antimicrobial activity. MSPiscidin-2 and -3 killed bacteria mainly by inducing membrane permeabilization, in addition, they also can interact with bacterial genomic DNA, which might influence the DNA replication and transcription. Besides, MSPiscidin-2 and -3 could effectively inhibit the formation of the bacterial biofilm and eliminate the preformed biofilms. In vivo, MSPiscidin-1-3 genes showed an inducible expression pattern in the tested tissues upon Vibrio harveyi infection, which further indicated the key roles of piscidins in innate immunity in largemouth bass. Overall, this study will supplement the understanding of M. salmoides innate immune system and provide candidates for the design of novel peptide antibacterial agents used in aquaculture.

Abstract
Carbohydrate, which is the most abundant nutrient in plant-sourced feedstuffs, is an economically indispensable component in commercial compound feeds for fish. This nutrient can enhance the physical quality of diets and allow for pellet expansion during extrusion. There is compelling evidence that an excess dietary intake of starch causes hepatic disorders, thereby further reducing the overall food consumption and growth performance of fish species. Among the severe metabolic disturbances are glycogenic hepatopathy (hepatomegaly caused by the excessive accumulation of glycogen in hepatocytes) and hepatic steatosis (the accumulation of large vacuoles of triacylglycerols in hepatocytes). The development of those disorders is mainly due to the limited ability of fish to oxidize glucose and control blood glucose concentration. The prolonged elevations of blood glucose increase glucose intake by the liver, and excess glucose is stored either as glycogen through glycogenesis in hepatocytes or as triglycerides via lipogenesis in tissues, depending on the species. In some fish species (e.g., largemouth bass), the liver has a low ability to regulate glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, and glycogen breakdown in response to high starch intake. For most species of fish, the liver size increases with lipid or glycogen accumulation when they have a high starch intake. It is a challenge to develop the same set of diagnostic criteria for all fish species as their physiology or metabolic patterns differ. Although glycogenic hepatopathy appears to be a common disease in carnivorous fish, it has been under-recognized in many studies. As a result, understanding these diseases and their pathogeneses in different fish species is crucial for manufacturing cost-effective pellet diets to promote the health, growth, survival, and feed efficiency of fish in future.

Abstract
Simple Summary In order to find effective antioxidants to improve the fleshy degeneration and liver tissue lesions of Micropterus salmoides that were fed artificial mixed feed, Lactobacillus casei K17, which displayed a high level of antioxidant activity in vitro and in vivo was selected in this study. The results indicated that after a trial for 69 days, live bacteria (LB), live bacteria protected by skim milk powder (MB), and dead bacteria were able to improve hemal and hepatic lipid metabolism and antioxidant response, reduce reactive oxygen species production, and protect Micropterus salmoides hepatic cells from injury, while LB and MB were also able to improve fillet quality. Therefore, Lactobacillus casei K17 might be a good alternative source of improving fillet quality and liver health in Micropterus salmoides. Abstract We previously demonstrated that Lactobacillus casei K17, isolated from Korean kimchi, has high antioxidant levels in vitro and in vivo. However, its effect on Micropterus salmoides is unknown. In this study, we investigated the impact of L. casei K17 supplementation on the lipid metabolism, antioxidant response, liver histology, and fillet quality of M. salmoides. We randomly assigned 450 M. salmoides (33.0 ± 0.5 g) to six diet groups for 69 days. The diets were as follows: 0.85% normal saline; 10% skim milk powder; 1 × 108 CFU/g live L. casei K17 (LB); 1 × 108 live L. casei K17 protected by skim milk powder (MB); 1 × 108 dead L. casei K17 (DB); and L. casei K17 fermentation supernatant. MB significantly improved the crude protein, total collagen, alkaline-insoluble collagen, fiber numbers, hardness, chewiness, and gumminess of M. salmoides fillets (p < 0.05). LB significantly improved crude protein and fiber numbers (p < 0.05). Furthermore, dietary supplementation with LB, MB, and DB maintained normal liver histology, preserved liver function, and increased hepatic and hemal antioxidant status by enhancing antioxidant enzyme activities. Meanwhile, the three diets also promoted lipid metabolism by increasing HDL-C effectiveness and reducing total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in serum and liver tissues, indicating that dietary supplementation with DB, LB, and MB had hypolipidemic effects on M. salmoides. MB and LB significantly improved fillet quality and LB, MB, and DB improved hemal and hepatic lipid metabolism and antioxidant response and reduced reactive oxygen species production, protecting M. salmoides hepatic cells from injury.

Abstract
The aim of this review was to summarize the current knowledge regarding the effects of aeromonosis on fish oxidative status. The bibliographic survey was carried out on the research platforms: Scopus and Science Direct. The keywords 'Aeromonas', 'fish' and 'oxidative status' (or 'oxidative stress', 'oxidative damage' and similar terms) were used. Scientific papers and short communications were considered. Studies involving fish aeromonosis and enzymatic or non-enzymatic markers of oxidative status were selected. The results of antioxidant enzymes activities/expressions after infection lack consistency, suggesting that these findings should be interpreted with caution. Most of the analysed studies pointed to an increase in reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde and protein carbonylation levels, indicating possible oxidative damage caused by the infection. Thus, these three biomarkers are excellent indicators of oxidative stress during infection. Regarding respiratory burst activity, several studies have indicated increased activity, but other studies have indicated unchanged activity after infection. Nitric oxide levels also increased after infection in most studies. Therefore, it is suggested that the fish's immune system tries to fight a bacterial infection by releasing reactive oxygen and nitrogen species.

Abstract
Protein accretion in some fish species is affected by dietary lipids, starch and their interactions, but this aspect of nutrition is largely unknown in largemouth bass (LMB). Therefore, we designed six experimental diets with three starch levels (5%, 10%, and 15%; dry matter basis) and two lipid levels (10% and 12.5%; dry matter basis) to evaluate the effects of dietary starch and lipid levels on the protein retention, growth, feed utilization, and liver histology of LMB. There were three tanks (18 fish per tank, ~ 4.85 g per fish) per dietary treatment group and the trial lasted for 8 weeks. Fish were fed to apparent satiation twice daily. Results indicated that increasing the dietary starch level from 5 to 15% reduced (P < 0.05) absolute feed intake (AFI; - 9.0%, - 15% and - 14% on days 14-28, 28-42, and 42-56, respectively) and weight gains (- 4.4% and - 6.5% on days 42 and 56, respectively) of LMB. Increasing the dietary lipid level from 10 to 12.5% reduced (P < 0.05) AFI (- 9.7%, - 11.7% and - 11.9% on days 14-28, 28-42; and 42-56, respectively), weight gains (- 4.2%, - 5.9% and - 6.9% on days 28, 42 and 56, respectively), and survival rate (by a 5.6% unit) of LMB. The retention of dietary protein and some amino acids in the body was affected by dietary starch or lipid levels and their interactions. The viscerosomatic index (VSI), hepatosomatic index (HSI), and intraperitoneal fat ratio (IPFR) increased with increasing the dietary starch level from 5 to 15%. Compared with 10% lipids, 12.5% lipids in diets increased IPFR but had no effect on VSI or HSI. The concentrations of glucose in serum increased with increasing the dietary starch level from 5 to 15% at 4 to 24 h after feeding, with the effect of dietary lipids being time-dependent. Compared with a 5%-starch diet, fish fed a diet with 10%- or 15%-starch exhibited an enlarged and pale liver with excessive glycogen. Based on these findings, we recommend dietary lipid and starch levels to be 10% and < 10%, respectively, for juvenile LMB to maximize the retention of dietary protein in their bodies.

Abstract
The present study was aimed to compare and evaluate the impacts of supplemented diets with different yeast hydrolysate (YH) levels on growth performance, body composition, hematological characteristics, antioxidant enzyme activities, and non-specific immunity (intestinal cytokines) of juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Three isonitrogenous (protein, 33%) and isolipidic (lipid, 6%) experimental diets supplemented graded levels of YH (0% for control; 1% and 3% as tested diets) were fed to juvenile Nile tilapia. A total of 240 fish with initial body weight averaging 3.5 ± 0.02 g were randomly divided into three groups with four replicates per group and 20 fish for each replicate. For apparent satiation, the fish were fed twice daily during eight weeks. The results showed no significant difference in survival among all treatments. The fish fed the diet containing 1% yeast hydrolysate had significantly elevated weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), protein efficiency ratio (PER) compared to the control group and lower feed conversion ratio (FCR). The fish fed 1% and 3% YH showed higher glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) activity and a significantly lower malondialdehyde (MDA) level in the liver than the control group, indicating enhancement of the anti-oxidant status. Serum lysozyme activity was significantly increased in the diet having 1% and 3% yeast hydrolysate supplementation groups, suggesting an improvement influence on the non-specific immune response. The expression of IL-1β, IL-10, TNF-α, TGF-β2, ALP and TLR2 was significantly elevated in fish fed the diet containing 1% YH. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with 1% yeast hydrolysate improves growth performance, and feed utilization enhances the antioxidant status and exerts an adequate stimulus on the non-specific immunity (intestinal cytokines) of Nile tilapia.

Abstract
Background This study evaluated the effects of partial substitution of dietary fishmeal (FM) with either fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) or autolysed dried yeast (HiCell®, Biorigin, Brazil) on intestinal microbiota of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata). A total number of 720 fish of 122.18 ± 6.22 g were fed for 92 days with three different diets in triplicate (3 tanks/diet). A diet based on FM/vegetable meal was used as control. The other two diets were formulated by replacing FM with 5% of either FPH or HiCell®. To analyze the gut microbiota associated to autochthonous and allochthonous microbial communities, the Illumina MiSeq platform for sequencing of 16S rRNA gene and QIIME pipeline were used. Results A total number of 102 OTUs (operational taxonomic units) at 97% identity were identified in fish gut samples collected at the end of feeding trial. Fourteen OTUs constituted the core gut microbiota, i.e. those OTUs found in at least nine out of fifteen samples per group and shared regardless of the diet. Eight OTUs were assigned to Firmicutes represented by Lactobacillus, Staphylococcus, and Bacillus genera, and six to Proteobacteria phylum. Dietary dried yeast autolysate modulated the intestinal microbiota by promoting the growth of some beneficial bacteria. At order level, fish fed yeast showed an enrichment in Bacillales and Clostridiales as compared to the control group, whereas fish fed FPH showed a significantly lower amount of bacteria belonging to Alteromonadales and Enterobacteriales than the other two feeding groups. Although we did not observe any effect of 5% FM replacement with alternative nitrogen sources at phylum level, at lower taxonomical levels, the composition of gut microbiota, in terms of relative abundance of specific taxa, was significantly influenced by the dietary treatment. Conclusions The metabarcoding analysis revealed a clearly intestinal microbiota modulation in response to dietary autolyzed yeast. The abundance of some beneficial bacteria, i.e. indigestible carbohydrate degrading- and SCFA producing bacteria, was positively affected. Brewer’s yeast autolysate could be a valid alternative protein source to FM as well as a valid functional ingredient for aquafeed production.
