Abstract
The fabrication of multi-component film with colloidal particles could be inconvenient. A novel "swell-permeate" (SP) strategy was proposed to form homogeneous multi-component films. The SP strategy allows colloidal particles to fit into the polymer network by stretching the polymer chains assisted by water. We demonstrated the strategy by creating films with polysaccharide substrates as β-cyclodextrin grafted chitosan (CS) with nanocellulose. The addition of nanocellulose significantly increased the mechanical properties and the barrier performance of the films. The size of nanocellulose particles in affecting mechanical properties was investigated by applying different length of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC), the longer of which, due to denser physical entanglements, showed a better increase to the film in the elastic modulus and tensile strength to 4.54-fold and 5.71-fold, respectively. The films were also loaded with ethyl-p-coumarate (EpCA) and had an enhanced performance in anti-microbial for Altenaria alternata, Salmonella typhi, and Escherichia coli. The anti-oxidative property was increased as well, and both effects were valid both in vitro and in ready-to-eat apples. The strategy provides a practical and convenient method for fabricating colloidal particle containing films, and the novel idea of "swell-permeate" is potentially regarded as a new solution to the challenge of ready-to-eat food quality maintenance.

Abstract
This study sought to develop an edible active film by integrating Pickering emulsions of forsythia essential oil and bacterial nanofibers at various concentrations into a film-forming matrix composed of funoran (F). The stability of the emulsions was evaluated through examination of the micro-morphology, particle size and distribution, 7-day emulsification index, and embedding rate of the Pickering emulsions. Subsequently, selected Pickering emulsions were incorporated into F to generate the edible active film. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy revealed that the Pickering emulsion was uniformly distributed throughout the F film, interconnected by hydrogen bonds. X-ray Diffraction spectra exhibited changes in peak intensity and shifts in position attributable to the edible active film. Pickering emulsion had a minimal impact on thermal stability. The film's tensile strength significantly increased, while elongation at break decreased. The heightened concentration of hydroxyl groups in the film led to increased thickness, reduced moisture content, and enhanced hygroscopicity. The edible active film exhibited superior antioxidant and antibacterial properties, thereby more efficiently shielding against oxygen and water vapour. In preservation tests involving chicken and lamb, the Pickering emulsion led to elevations in pH, total volatile basic nitrogen, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance levels in the meat.

Abstract
The continuous development of sustainable food-active packaging materials and practices with high performance is a response to the increasing challenges posed by microbial food safety and environmental contamination. In this study, a multifunctional bio-nanocomposite composed primarily of chitosan, cellulose nanomaterials and carvacrol was proposed as a conformal coating for fruit preservation. The coating exhibits excellent antioxidant and antibacterial activities owing to the incorporation of the carvacrol. The inhibition rate of the coating on E. coli and S. aureus is enhanced by 57.13 % and 62.18 %, respectively. And its antioxidant activities is also improved by 77.45 %. In addition, the oxygen permeability (OP) and water vapor permeability (WVP) of this CS/CNC coating are significantly lowered by 67 % and 46 %, respectively, comparing with the CS coating. The coating exhibited excellent biosafety and cytocompatibility because of over 90 % of the HepG2 cells remained alive in each concentration of the coating after 24 h incubation. Additionally, the efficacy of the coating in prolonging the freshness and visual appeal of perishable fruits is substantiated by the experiment involving two fruit specimens. Furthermore, the coating's ease of production, ingestibility, washability, and utilization of cost-effective and easily accessible biomaterials, including renewable waste materials, indicate its potential as a viable economic substitute for commercially accessible fruit coatings.

Abstract
Hitherto unreported hybrid nanofillers (CNC:MgO) reinforced chitosan (CTS) based composite (CNC:MgO)/CTS films were synthesized using a solution-casting blend technique and synergistic effect of hybrid nanofiller in terms of properties enhancement were investigated. Optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to characterize the films. The hybrid nanofiller considerably changed the transparency and color of the CTS films. The tensile strengths of (3 wt%) CNC/CTS, (3 wt%) MgO/CTS, (1:1)(CNC:MgO)/CTS, (1:2)(CNC:MgO)/CTS and (2:1)(CNC:MgO)/CTS films were 27.49 %, 35.60 %, 91.62 %, 38.22 %, and 29.32 % higher than pristine CTS films respectively, while the water vapor permeation were 28.21 %, 30.77 %, 34.62 %, 38.46 %, and 37.44 % lower than pristine CTS film, respectively. Moreover, the CTS composite films exhibited an improvement in overall water barrier properties after incorporating hybrid nanofillers. Our observations suggest that chitosan-based hybrid nanofiller composite films are a good replacement for plastic-based packaging materials within the food industry.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) isolated from cotton in augmenting pectin (PEC)/konjac glucomannan (KGM) composite films containing clove essential oil (CEO) for food packaging application. The effects of CNC dosage on film properties were examined by analyzing the rheology of film-forming solutions and the mechanical, barrier, antimicrobial, and CEO-release properties of the films. Rheological and FTIR analysis revealed the enhanced interactions among the film components after CNC incorporation due to its high aspect ratio and abundant hydroxyl groups, which can also prevent CEO droplet aggregation, contributing to form a compact microstructure as confirmed by SEM and 3D surface topography observations. Consequently, the addition of CNC reinforced the polysaccharide matrix, increasing the tensile strength of the films and improving their barrier properties to water vapor. More importantly, antibacterial, controlled release and kinetic simulation experiments proved that the addition of CNC could further slow down the release rate of CEO, prolonging the antimicrobial properties of the films. PEC/KGM/CEO composite films with 15 wt% CNC was found to have relatively best comprehensive properties, which was also most effective in delaying deterioration of grape quality during the storage of 9 days at 25 °C.

Abstract
With the rapid development of the Internet of Things, nanogenerator as a green energy collection technology has attracted great attention in various fields. Specifically, the natural renewable nanocellulose as a raw material can significantly improve the environmental friendliness of the nanocellulose-based nanogenerators, which also makes the nanocellulose based nanogenerators expected to further develop in areas such as wearable devices and sensor networks. This paper mainly reports the application of nanocellulose in nanogenerator, focusing on the sensor. The types, sources and preparation methods of nanocellulose are briefly introduced. At the same time, the special structure of nanocellulose highlights the advantages of nanocellulose in nanogenerators. Then, the application of nanocellulose-based nanogenerators in sensors is introduced. Finally, the future development prospects and shortcomings of this nanogenerator are discussed.

Abstract
This research aimed to investigate the feasibility of using a bionanocomposite made of chitosan, CNC, and TiO2 nanoparticles to package freshly sliced apples. At the outset, the effect of varying concentrations of CNC (1, 5, and 10 %) and TiO2 (1, 3, and 5 %) on the mechanical, thermal, and water sensitivity characteristics of the chitosan bionanocomposite was studied. Among different combinations, the bionanocomposite containing 10 % CNC and 3 % TiO2 displayed significant enhancements compared to neat chitosan film. Notably, it exhibited a substantial increase in tensile strength (78.2 %), glass transition temperature (26.7 %), and melting temperature (30.0 %) compared to neat chitosan film. Additionally, it demonstrated reduced WVP (27.8 %), FWS (44.4 %), and SR (50.7 %). These improvements were attributed to the synergistic interactions among chitosan, CNC, and TiO2 nanoparticles through hydrogen and oxygen bonding, corroborated by spectral changes in the material. The photocatalytic degradation of ethylene and microbes by UV-A (intermittent) activated TiO2 contained in the developed bionanocomposite was confirmed by the retention of acceptable quality and radical scavenging activity (70 % retention) of fresh-cut apple slices up to 11 days. The developed bionanocomposite can thus preserve the quality of ethylene-producing horticultural produce.

Abstract
Over the past five years, there has been growing interest in the design of modified cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as nanoscale antimicrobial agents in potential end-user applications such as food preservation/packaging, additive manufacturing, biomedical and water purification. The interest of applying CNCs-based antimicrobial agents arise due to their abilities to be derived from renewable bioresources and their excellent physicochemical properties including rod-like morphologies, large specific surface area, low toxicity, biocompatibility, biodegradability and sustainability. The presence of ample surface hydroxyl groups further allows easy chemical surface modifications for the design of advanced functional CNCs-based antimicrobial materials. Furthermore, CNCs are used to support antimicrobial agents that are subjected to instability issues. The current review summarizes recent progress in CNC-inorganic hybrid-based materials (Ag and Zn nanoparticles, other metal/metal oxide) and CNC-organic hybrid-based materials (polymers, chitosan, simple organic molecules). It focuses on their design, syntheses and applications with a brief discussion on their probable modes of antimicrobial action whereby the roles of CNCs and/or the antimicrobial agents are highlighted.

Abstract
The deterioration of the performance of polysaccharide-based films over time, particularly their hydrophilicity and mechanical properties, is one of the main problems limiting their applications in the packaging industry. In the present study, we proposed to improve the performance of chitosan-based films through the use of: (1) nanocellulose as an additive to reduce their hydrophilic nature; (2) bio-based plasticizer to improve their mechanical properties; and (3) chestnut extract as an antimicrobial agent. To evaluate their stability over time, the properties of as-formed films (mechanical, hydrophilic, barrier and antibacterial) were studied immediately after preparation and after 7, 14 and 30 days. In addition, the morphological properties of the films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, their structure by FTIR, their transparency by UV-Vis and their thermal properties by TGA. The films showed a hydrophobic character (contact angle above 100°), barrier properties to oxygen and carbon dioxide and strong antibacterial activity against Gram-negative (E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus) bacteria. Moreover, the use of nanofillers did not deteriorate the elongation at breaks or the thermal properties of the films, but their addition reduced the transparency. In addition, the results showed that the greatest change in film properties occurred within the first 7 days after sample preparation, after which the properties were found to stabilize.

Abstract
Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) fruits are prone to quality and quantity loss in shelf-life conditions and cold storage due to their short post-harvest life. Until now efforts have been made to extend the shelf life of the sweet cherry. However, an efficient and commercially scalable process remains elusive. To contribute to this challenge, here in this study, biobased composite coatings consisting of chitosan, mucilage, and levan, were applied on sweet cherry fruits and tested for postharvest parameters in both market and cold storage conditions. Results demonstrated that the shelf life of sweet cherries can be extended until the 30th day while retaining important post-harvest properties like decreased weight loss, fungal deterioration, increased stem removal force, total flavonoid, l-ascorbic acid, and oxalic acid. Given the cost-effectiveness of the polymers used, the findings of this study indicate the feasibility of extending the shelf-life of sweet cherries on a larger scale.

Abstract
Bananas are among the most produced and consumed fruit all over the world. However, a vast amount of banana biomass is generated because banana trees bear fruit only once in their lifetime. This massive amount of biomass waste is either disposed of in agricultural fields, combusted, or dumped at plantations, thus posing environmental concerns. Nanocellulose (NC) extraction from this source can be one approach to improve the value of banana biomass. Owing to its superb properties, such as high surface area and aspect ratio, good tensile strength, and high thermal stability, this has facilitated nanocellulose application in the food industry either as a functional ingredient, an additive or in food packaging. In this review, two different applications of banana biomass NC were identified: (i) food packaging and (ii) food stabilizers. Relevant publications were reviewed, focusing on the nanocellulose extraction from several banana biomass applications as food additives, as well as on the safety and regulatory aspects. Ultimately, further research is required to prompt a perspicuous conclusion about banana biomass NC safety, its potential hazards in food applications, as well as its validated standards for future commercialization.

Abstract
In this study, CNFs were provided by an efficient, unmodified, and clean biological method with enzymes and a small amount of alkali, compared to the CNCs with the chemical method involving a strong acid. To provide an accurate targeted selection for future applications, we made the following comparison by analyzing the differences in the preparation method, performance, and application performance of the two nanocelluloses. The result of this study indicated that CNFs and CNCs exhibited a crystallinity index of 58.2 and 83.5%, respectively. CNFs had a mean length (L) of 192.3 nm and a diameter (D) of 1.9 nm, and the average L and D of CNCs reached 123.6 nm and 3.7 nm, respectively. The solution viscosity of CNFs and CNCs reached 7.46 Pa s and 1.91 Pa s, respectively. CNFs and CNCs exhibited zeta potential values of -88.26 mV and -26.40 mV, respectively. The electrospun composite film of PLA-CNFs and PLA-CNCs achieved water contact angles of 138.7 and 34.5°, and the water-oil contact angle reached 24.7 and 30.5°, respectively. The breaking strength of PLA-CNFs and PLA-CNCs reached 96.07 cN and 163.23 cN, and the break elongation followed an order of PLA-CNCs (32.16%) < PLA-CNFs (34.70%). In brief, CNFs can make the composite membrane hydrophobic and with superior extension, and CNCs can make the composite membrane hydrophilic and enhance its strength. Both the composite films conformed to the non-toxic standard, and the PLA-CNFs film more significantly contributed to the cell growth, which is expected to serve as a medical material.

Abstract
Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were acetylated to the various parametrised degrees of substitution (DS), determined through attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR–FTIR) and incorporated into alginate (ALG) and chitosan (CH) film-forming solutions. An investigation of morphology with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed increased chemical compatibility with the CH matrix after acetylation, producing a smooth surface layer, while ALG mixed better with pristine CNCs. The ATR–FTIR analysis of films demonstrated inter-diffusional structural changes upon the integration of pristine/modified CNCs. Films were evaluated in terms of water contact angle (WCA), which decreased upon CNC addition in either of the biocomposite types. The H2O barrier assessed through applicative vapour transmission (WVT) rate increased with the CNC esterification in CH, but was not influenced in ALG. To evaluate the relationship between environmental humidity and mechanical properties, conditioning was applied for 48 h under controlled relative humidity (33%, 54% and 75%) prior to the evaluation of the mechanical properties and moisture content. It was observed that tensile strength was highest upon specimens being dry (25 ± 3 MPa for ALG, reinforced with neat CNCs, or 16 ± 2 MPa in the CH with CNCs, reacting to the highest DS), lowering with dewing, and the elongation at break exhibited the opposite. It is worth noting that the modification of CNCs improved the best base benchmark stress–strain performance. Lastly, (thermal) stability was assessed by means of the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique, suggesting a slight improvement.

Abstract
Infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance have become one of the extreme health threats of this century. Overuse of antibiotics leads to pollution. To overcome this threat, the current strategy is to develop a substitute for these antibiotics that are extracted from natural sources. In this study, nanocellulose (NC) was isolated from an agricultural waste (wheat straw) and then oxidized with the help of sodium periodate to obtain dialdehyde nanocellulose (DA-NC). Then, chitosan (Ch) and DA-NC are both crosslinked with each other in different weight ratios, to obtain NC/Ch composite hydrogels. The resulted hydrogel is also characterized to confirm its structure, morphology and composition. The hydrogel was also tested for antimicrobial activities against bacteria, algae as well as fungal species to check its applicability for biomedical applications. The six microbes used for the ananlysis are Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger and Fusarium solani. The antimicrobial assessment of the hydrogel is evaluated via inhibition zone and optical density analysis. The resulted nanocellulose/chitosan (NC/Ch) hydrogel shows the uniform distribution of nanocellulose in the composite and the synergistic effect of their properties. Hydrogel serves excellent antimicrobial results which makes it a promising candidate for various biomedical applications.

Abstract
In the current study, cellulose was extracted from sugarcane bagasse and further converted into carboxy methyl cellulose. The morphological, chemical, and structural characterization of synthesizeed carboxy methyl cellulose was performed. Further, the biopolymer was fabricated with mycogenic selenium nanoparticles and used to develop the biopolymer films. The developed biopolymer films were examined for the fruit shelf life stability, antifungal activity, and biodegradation potential. The results revealed that grapes wrapped with biofilms showed enhanced shelf life of fruit at all storage time intervals. The study also witnesses the antifungal activity of biopolymer films with a remarkable inhibitory action on the spores of Fusarium oxysporum and Sclerospora graminicola phytopathogens. Lastly, the biopolymer films were significantly degradable in the soil within two weeks of incubation. Thus, the developed biopolymer films exhibit multifaceted properties that can be used as an alternative to synthetic plastics for fruit packaging and also helps in protecting against fungal contaminants during storage with naturally degradable potential.

Abstract
In this research, chitosan nanoparticles as an efficient and reusable adsorbent with adsorption capacity of 5.79 mg/g, surface area of 62 m2/g and pHpzc of 8.07 were applied to remove the ethinylestradiol (as a sample of estrogen) from an aqueous wastewater. The chitosan nanoparticles were characterized by SEM, XRD and FT-IR analyses. Four independent variables involving contact time, adsorbent dosage, pH, and initial concentration of estrogen were applied to design the experiments by Design Expert software (CCD under RSM). In fact, number of experiments was minimized and the operating conditions were optimized for the maximum estrogen removal. The results indicated that three independent variables (contact time, adsorbent dosage, and pH) increment increased the estrogen removal while the estrogen initial concentration enhancement decreased the removal due to the concentration polarization phenomenon. The optimum conditions for the estrogen removal (92.50 %) on the chitosan nanoparticles were found at contact time of 220 min, adsorbent dosage of 1.45 g/l, pH of 7.3 and estrogen initial concentration of 5.7 mg/l. Moreover, the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order models could properly legitimize estrogen adsorption process on the chitosan nanoparticles.

Abstract
Despite the widespread central nervous system injuries, treatment of these disorders is still an issue of concern due to the complexities. Natural recovery in these patients is rarely observed, which calls for developing new methods that address these problems. In this study, natural polymers of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and gelatin were electrospun into scaffolds and cross-linked. In order to modify the PHB-based scaffold for nerve tissue engineering, the scaffold surface was modified by exposure to the ammonium gas plasma under controlled conditions, and the laminin as a promoter for neural cells was coated on the sample surface. Then, polyaniline nanoparticles were inkjet-printed on a sample surface as parallel lines to induce the differentiation of stem cells into neural cells. Infrared spectroscopy, absorption of PBS, AFM, degradation rate, contact angle, electron microscopy and optical microscopy, thermal and mechanical behavior, and analysis of the viability of L929 cells were investigated for the scaffolds. The results showed gelatin decreased the contact angle from 106.2° to 38° and increased the residual weight after PBS incubation from 82 % to 38 %. The moduli of the scaffold increased from 8.78 MPa for pure PHB to 28.74 for the modified scaffold. In addition, performed methods increased cell viability from 69 % for PHB to 89 % for modified scaffold and also had a favorable effect on cell adhesion. Investigation of culturing P19 stem cells demonstrated that they successfully differentiated into neural cells. Results show that the scaffolds prepared in this study were promising for nerve tissue engineering.

Abstract
Cationic nanomaterials are promising candidates for the development of effective antibacterial agents by taking advantage of the nanoscale effects as well as other exceptional physicochemical properties of nanomaterials. In this study, carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (cCNCs) derived from softwood pulp were coated with cationic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) of varying molecular weights. The resulting cationic carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals coated with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (cCNCs-PDDA) nanomaterials were characterized for their structural and morphological properties using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, elemental analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Cationic cCNCs-PDDA were investigated for their antibacterial properties against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli 23934 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa using a bacterial lawn growth inhibition assay. cCNC-PDDA materials displayed marked antibacterial activity, particularly against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus. Overall, our results indicated that cCNCs-PDDA could be a potential candidate for antibacterial applications such as antibacterial surfaces or coatings.

Abstract
Currently, petroleum-based synthetic plastics are used as a key barrier material in the paper-based packaging of several food and nonfood goods. This widespread usage of plastic as a barrier lining is not only harmful to human and marine health, but it is also polluting the ecosystem. Researchers and food manufacturers are focused on biobased alternatives because of its numerous advantages, including biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and structural flexibility. When used alone or in composites/multilayers, these biobased alternatives provide strong barrier qualities against grease, oxygen, microbes, air, and water. According to the most recent literature reports, biobased polymers for barrier coatings are having difficulty breaking into the business. Technological breakthroughs in the field of bioplastic production and application are rapidly evolving, proffering new options for academics and industry to collaborate and develop sustainable packaging solutions. Existing techniques, such as multilayer coating of nanocomposites, can be improved further by designing them in a more systematic manner to attain the best barrier qualities. Modified nanocellulose, lignin nanoparticles, and bio-polyester are among the most promising future candidates for nanocomposite-based packaging films with high barrier qualities. In this review, the state-of-art and research advancements made in biobased polymeric alternatives such as paper and board barrier coating are summarized. Finally, the existing limitations and potential future development prospects for these biobased polymers as barrier materials are reviewed.

Abstract
Recently, considerable interest has been focused on developing greener and biodegradable materials due to growing environmental concerns. Owing to their low cost, biodegradability, and good mechanical properties, plant fibers have substituted synthetic fibers in the preparation of composites. However, the poor interfacial adhesion due to the hydrophilic nature and high-water absorption limits the use of plant fibers as a reinforcing agent in polymer matrices. The hydrophilic nature of the plant fibers can be overcome by chemical treatments. Cellulose the most abundant natural polymer obtained from sources such as plants, wood, and bacteria has gained wider attention these days. Different methods, such as mechanical, chemical, and chemical treatments in combination with mechanical treatments, have been adopted by researchers for the extraction of cellulose from plants, bacteria, algae, etc. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) have been extracted and used for different applications such as food packaging, water purification, drug delivery, and in composites. In this review, updated information on the methods of isolation of nanocellulose, classification, characterization, and application of nanocellulose has been highlighted. The characteristics and the current status of cellulose-based fiber-reinforced polymer composites in the industry have also been discussed in detail.

Abstract
Sandwich structures are a class of multifunctional high-performance structural composites that have the advantages of being lightweight, of a high strength-to-weight ratio, and of high specific energy absorption capabilities. The creative design of the core along with the apposite material selection for the fabrication of the face sheet and core are the two prerequisites with encouraging areas for further expedition towards the fabrication of advanced composite sandwich structures. The current review work focused on different types of core designs, such as truss, foam, corrugated, honeycomb, derivative, hybrid, hollow, hierarchical, gradient, folded, and smart core along with different composite materials accessible for face sheet fabrication, including fiber-reinforced composite, metal matrix composite, and polymer matrix composite are considered. The joining method plays a major role for the performance evolution of sandwich structures, which were also investigated. Further discussions are aligned to address major challenges in the fabrication of sandwich structures and further enlighten the future direction of the advanced composite sandwich structure. Finally, the work is summarized with a brief conclusion. This review article provides wider guidelines for researchers in designing and manufacturing next-generation lightweight multilayer core sandwich structures.

Abstract
Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were mixed with either cellulose nanofibril (CNF) or carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) in variable proportions (0/100, 20/80, 40/60, 50/50, 60/40, 80/20 and 100/0) to obtain cast films with acceptable barrier and mechanical properties as replacements for food packaging plastics. Both CNF and CMC improved tensile strength, elongation, UV opacity, air resistance, hydrophobicity (WCA-water contact angle), water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) and oxygen impermeability in pure CNC. WVTR and oxygen permeability were strongly dependent on relative humidity (RH). Interestingly, the greatest effect on WVTR was observed at RH = 90% in films containing CMC in proportions above 60%. CMC- and CNF-containing films had oxygen impermeability up to an RH level of 80% and 60%, respectively. The previous effects were confirmed by food packaging simulation tests, where CMC-containing films proved the best performers. The composite films studied were biodegradable-which constitutes a major environmental related advantage-to an extent proportional to their content in CMC or CNF.

Abstract
For many years, garlic has been used as a condiment in food and traditional medicine. However, the garlic skin, which accounts for 25% of the garlic bulk, is considered agricultural waste. In this study, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and garlic extract (GE) from garlic skin were isolated and used as fillers to manufacture biocomposite films. The films were characterized in terms of UV barrier, thermal, mechanical, biodegradability, and antimicrobial activity. The chitosan-containing films and CNCs have significantly improved the films' tensile strength, Young's modulus, and elongation but decreased the film transparency compared to chitosan films. The combination of the CNCs and GE, on the other hand, slightly reduced the mechanical properties. The addition of CNCs slightly decreased the film transparency, while the addition of GE significantly improved the UV barrier properties. Thermal studies revealed that the incorporation of CNC and GE had minimal effect on the thermal stability of the chitosan films. The degradability rate of the chitosan composite films was found to be higher than that of the neat chitosan films. The antimicrobial properties of films were studied against Escherichia coli, Streptomyces griseorubens, Streptomyces alboviridis, and Staphylococcus aureus, observing that their growth was considerably inhibited by the addition of GE in composite films. Films incorporating both CNCs and GE from garlic skin hold more promise for active food packaging applications due to a combination of enhanced physical characteristics and antibacterial activity.

Abstract
Walnut kernels represent no more than 50-60% of the total weight of the fruit, so the sum of walnut shells generated every year is immense. Nonetheless, these shells could be further valorised for the extraction of their main constituents following a biorefinery scheme. Hence, the objective of this work was an integral valorisation of walnut shells, which involved a sequential organosolv delignification (200 °C, 90 min, 70/30 v/v EtOH/H2O, LSR 6:1) and several posterior non-isothermal hydrothermal treatments (180, 195 and 210 °C, LSR 8:1). Moreover, the spent solids after the aforementioned treatments were evaluated as possible sources of cellulose nanocrystals. The results showed that the sequential organosolv delignifications presented relative lignin yields up to 60%, which leaded to lignins that just differed on their molecular weight distributions. The hydrothermal treatments were efficient for the removal of still present hemicelluloses (14.7-71.8%), and permitted a successful cellulose nanocrystal obtaining whereas the spent solid from the delignification stages did not. Thus, this study presented an innovative strategy for the integral valorisation of walnut shells.

Abstract
The low water-resistance and limited antibacterial activity of chitosan (CS) film hinder its practical applications in food preservation field. To solve these issues, we have facilely and effectively fabricated cinnamon essential oil (CEO)-loaded composite films via incorporating cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-stabilized CEO Pickering emulsions into CS-based film-forming matrix. Research results show the well distribution of emulsion droplets in film matrix. The insertion of CEO emulsions can improve film water-resistance and antibacterial activity, but reduces its mechanical strength. Concretely, the water contact angle and inhibition zone of composite films can increase by about 12.3° and 2 times compared with CS control film. Compared with tween-80, CNCs can increase film tensile strength by about 3.52 MPa and observably offset the decline of film mechanical property by CEO. Moreover, the film prepared with 3 w/v% CNC stabilized 30 v/v% CEO Pickering emulsion not only enhances pork preservation, but also maintain its structural stability. The fabricated antimicrobial films have considerable potential for packaging application.

Abstract
Multifunctional polymers derived from renewable organic substances have received significant attention. In this work, the Diels-Alder "click" reaction was used to synthesize a renewable copolymer with the mechanical strength of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and the natural antioxidant activity of lignin. Chemical structural analysis and molecular weight results confirmed that lignin was successfully attached to the CNCs. Phenolic hydroxyl groups were introduced into CNCs, resulting in good antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 1.49 mg/mL, although a slight decrease in the crystallinity index and thermal properties was observed. Additionally, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) films containing lignin-modified CNCs were prepared by solution casting. The lignin-modified CNCs endowed film with antioxidant activity and also contributed to increasing the tensile strength by 70%. This indicated that the lignin-modified CNCs with good antioxidant activities and mechanical strength have promising applications in multifunctional materials.

Abstract
Chitosan films lack various important physicochemical properties and need to be supplemented with reinforcing agents to bridge the gap. Herein, we have produced chitosan composite films supplemented with copolymerized (with polyacrylonitrile monomers) cellulose nanofibers and diatomite nanocomposite at different concentrations. The incorporation of CNFs and diatomite enhanced the physicochemical properties of the films. The mechanical characteristics and hydrophobicity of the films were observed to be improved after incorporating the copolymerized CNFs/diatomite composite at different concentrations (CNFs: 1%, 2% and 5%; diatomite: 10% and 30%). The antioxidant activity gradually increased with an increasing concentration (1-5% and 10-30%) of copolymerized CNFs/diatomite composite in the chitosan matrix. Moreover, the water solubility decreased from 30% for chitosan control film (CH-0) to 21.06% for films containing 30% diatomite and 5% CNFs (CNFs-D30-5). The scanning electron micrographs showed an overall uniform distribution of copolymerized CNFs/diatomite composite in the chitosan matrix with punctual agglomerations.

Abstract
The research on a new type of low-cost, less-loss and adjustable sustained antibacterial activity food packaging films with self-activation ability and great industrialization potentiality is of great scientific and technological interest. Herein, a novel chitosan/negatively charged graphitic carbon nitride self-activation bionanocomposite films was prepared by one-step electrostatic self-assembly. First, the antibacterial efficiency of this film could reach to 99.8 ± 0.26% against E. coli and 99.9 ± 0.04% against S. aureus through self-activated under visible light. Second, this film can effectively extend the shelf life of tangerines to 24 days. Hemolysis and cell experiment test proved that this film was safe and nontoxic. Finally, negatively charged graphitic carbon nitride with low-cost can improve the mechanical, thermal and hydrophobic properties of neat chitosan films. This work can provide a new pathway for the preparation of low-cost packaging films with excellent visible light responsive property and sustainable antibacterial activity.

Abstract
The influence of protein (sodium caseinate-SC), polysaccharide (maltodextrin-MD; pectin-PC) and their Maillard conjugates (sodium caseinate maltodextrin conjugate-SCMDC; sodium caseinate pectin conjugate-SCPCC) were studied on the physico-chemical and biological properties of eugenol nanoemulsions/powder. The chemical composition was optimized using Taguchi design. The particles size of eugenol nanoemulsions with SC, MD, PC, SCMDC and SCPCC were 104.6, 323.5, 1872, 181.7, and 454.4 nm, respectively while their zeta potentials were -31.2, -28.5, -21.4, -40.1 and -25.1 mV, respectively. Turbidity studies revealed higher stability of nanoemulsion prepared with Maillard conjugate (SCMDC) compared to protein or polysaccharides alone. The dispersion of SCMDC eugenol nanoparticles in buffer was prepared to study its stability at different pH (3.0, 5.0, and 7.0) and temperature (4°, 37°, 60 °C) range. In-vitro enzymatic release study showed 31 and 74% release of eugenol after 6 h at pH 2.4 and 7.4, respectively. In vitro antioxidant capacity of SCMDC encapsulated eugenol was higher than native eugenol, as demonstrated by free radical scavenging assays. In comparison to native eugenol, E:SCMDC eugenol showed reduced toxicity. These findings suggested that nanoencapsulated eugenol (E:SCMDC) have a huge potential in nutraceutical and therapeutic applications.

Abstract
Walnuts are nowadays widely consumed. Since the edible part of walnuts does not account more than 50-60% of their total weight, the total amount of shells produced annually is huge. However, as walnut shells are part of lignocellulosic biomass, they could be valorised via a biorefinery approach in order to extract their diverse constituents. For this reason, the aim of this work was to valorise walnut shells by a biorefinery scheme. The latest involved multiple microwave assisted and conventional hydrothermal treatments for the subsequent valorisation of oligosaccharides. Then, an organosolv delignification of the solid that permitted the maximum oligosaccharide yield was performed, in order to isolate the lignin. Finally, it was treated for cellulose nanocrystal obtaining. The results showed, on the one hand, that the hydrothermal treatments leaded to xyloligossacharide-rich liquors (1-17 g/L). On the other hand, the organosolv delignification resulted into the extraction of a highly pure lignin (93.6%) and a weight average molecular weight of 7000 Da. Moreover, the solid from the delignification treatment was suitable for a successful nanocrystal production. The extracted fractions could be employed in many applications and could be considered renewable precursors for new materials and chemicals. Hence, the proposed biorefinery scheme would allow an integral valorisation of currently undervalued walnut shells.

Abstract
In this work, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl-oxidized cellulose nanocrystals (TOCNs) were loaded into sodium alginate/chitosan multilayer film as nanofillers to investigate the modulation of the surface charge density of TOCNs on the film properties. First, the surface charge density of TOCNs was controlled by adjusting the carboxyl content and morphological size by varying the oxidant dosage. After oxidation, TOCN with higher surface charge density was observed to display a higher crystallinity, a more open internal structure, a better dispersibility and a slightly weaker thermal stability. In addition, a 15-layer film composed of sodium alginate and chitosan, called (SA/CH)15, was constructed by layer-by-layer assembly. Both in situ deposition monitoring and free-standing multilayer film formation indicated that TOCNs relied on strong electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding to achieve a compact and uniform interlayer and a thinner thickness of (SA/CH)15, which was more evident at a high surface charge density. The addition of TOCNs also enhanced the mechanical properties, thermal stability, hydrophobicity, and barrier properties of (SA/CH)15. In particular, the resulting sodium alginate/chitosan multilayer film exhibited an improved packaging performance when nanocomposite was performed using TOCN with a surface charge density of 3.22 ± 0.11 e nm-2.

Abstract
The continuous petroleum-based plastics manufacturing generates disposal issues, spreading the problem of plastic pollution and its rise in the environment. Recently, innovative techniques and scientific research promoted biopolymers as the primary alternative for traditional plastics, raising and expanding global bioplastic production. Due to its unmatched biological and functional attributes, chitosan (Ch) has been substantially explored and employed as a biopolymeric matrix. Nevertheless, the hydrophilicity and the weak mechanical properties associated with this biopolymer represent a significant intrinsic restriction to its implementation into some commercial applications, namely, in food packaging industries. Distinct methodologies have been utilized to upgrade the mechanical and barrier properties of Ch, such as using organic or inorganic nanofillers, crosslinkers, or blends with other polymers. This review intends to analyze the most recent works that combine the action of different nanoparticle types with Ch films to reinforce their mechanical and barrier properties.

Abstract
This work aimed to evaluate the potential of chitosan/cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) films to be used as active pads for meat packages to prolong its shelf-life and preserve its properties over time. Several CNC concentrations (5, 10, 25, and 50 wt%) were tested and the films were produced by solvent casting. The developed samples were characterized by ATR-FTIR, TGA, FESEM, and XRD. The transparency, antimicrobial, barrier and mechanical properties were also assessed. Finally, the films' ability to prolong food shelf-life was studied in real conditions using chicken meat. CNC incorporation improved the thermal stability and the oxygen barrier while the water vapor permeability was maintained. An enhancement of mechanical properties was also observed by the increase in tensile strength and Young's modulus in chitosan/CNC films. These films demonstrated bactericidal effect against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungicidal activity against Candida albicans. Lastly, chitosan-based films decreased the growth of Pseudomonas and Enterobacteriaceae bacteria in meat during the first days of storage compared to commercial membranes, while chitosan/CNC films reduced the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), indicating their efficiency in retarding meat's spoilage under refrigeration conditions. This work highlights the great potential of natural-based films to act as green alternatives for food preservation.

Abstract
Lignocellulosic wastes may provide a means to economize polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production. This study has proposed the use of Agave durangensis leaves obtained from the artisanal mezcal industry as a novel substrate for this aim. Results revealed an increase in PHB biosynthesis (0.32 g/L) and improvement in %PHB (16.79-19.51%) by Bacillus cereus 4N when A. durangensis leaves used as carbon source were physically pre-treated by ultrasound for 30 min (ADL + US30') and thermally pre-treated (ADL + Q). Chemical analyses and SEM studies revealed compositional and morphological changes when A. durangensis leaves were physically pre-treated. Also, elemental analysis of growth media showed that carbon/nitrogen ratios of 14-21, and low nitrogen, hydrogen, and protein content were well-suited for PHB biosynthesis. Confocal microscopy revealed morphological changes in the bacterial cell and carbonosome structure under the influence of different substrates. Finally, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses showed that homopolymeric PHB with a high thermal-resistance (271.94-272.89 °C) was produced. Therefore, the present study demonstrates the potential use of physically pre-treated A. durangensis leaves to produce PHB. These results promote the development of a circular economy in Mexico, where lignocellulosic wastes can be employed to produce value-added biotechnological products.

Abstract
A chitosan-based nanocomposite film with tannic acid (TA) as a cross-linker and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2) as a reinforcing agent was developed with a solution casting technique. TA and TiO2 are biocompatible with chitosan, and this paper studied the synergistic effect of the cross-linker and the reinforcing agent. The addition of TA enhanced the ultraviolet blocking and mechanical properties of the chitosan-based nanocomposite film. The reinforcement of TiO2 in chitosan/TA further improved the nanocomposite film's mechanical properties compared to the neat chitosan or chitosan/TA film. The thermal stability of the chitosan-based nanocomposite film was slightly enhanced, whereas the swelling ratio decreased. Interestingly, its water vapor barrier property was also significantly increased. The developed chitosan-based nanocomposite film showed potent antioxidant activity, and it is promising for active food packaging.

Abstract
Colibacillosis disease has an important economic impact on poultry production worldwide. It is one of the most common causes of mortality in commercial layer and breeder chickens. Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is the main cause of this disease. Nanoparticles have been widely used in vaccine design as both adjuvants and antigen delivery vehicles. The present study aimed to produce an efficient vaccine from E. coli serogroups O1 and O78 to help in controlling colibacillosis in chicken using two forms of chitosan (CS) and ascorbate chitosan (AsCS) nanoparticles. Nanovaccines has been prepared through loading and encapsulation of outer membrane and flagellar antigen on CS and AsCS nanoparticles with loading efficiency 86, 63,55, 48% for CS-loaded-, Cs-capsulated-, AsCS-loaded- and AsCS-capsulated-E. coli Antigen, respectively. Two hundred specific pathogens free (SPF) 3-weeks old broiler chickens were used and divided into four groups to investigate the immune response of nanovaccines. The immune response was measured by the microagglutination, ELISA, and challenge test. From results, it could be concluded that generally adding chitosan NPs is capable of improving vaccine efficacy via the induction of strong immunity. Moreover, we recommend the production of the nanovaccine CS-capsulated -antigen from E. coli O1 and O78 serotypes to be used as a potent vaccine to aid in controlling colibacillosis. Also, the ascorbate chitosan is a great alternate for the initiation of a potent immune response in critical infection cases.

Abstract
In recent years, nanocellulose (NC) has also attracted a great deal of attention in drug delivery systems due to its unique physical properties, specific surface area, low risk of cytotoxicity, and excellent biological properties. This review is focused on nanocellulose based systems acting as carriers to be used in drug or antimicrobial delivery by providing different but controlled and sustained release of drugs or antimicrobial agents, respectively, thus showing potential for different routes of applications and administration. Microorganisms are increasingly resistant to antibiotics, and because, generally, the used metal or metal oxide nanoparticles at some concentration have toxic effects, more research has focused on finding biocompatible antimicrobial agents that have been obtained from natural sources. Our review contains the latest research from the last five years that tested nanocellulose-based materials in the field of drug delivery and antimicrobial activity.

Abstract
In this work, an integral valorisation of almond shells through a biorefinery approach was studied. The three main components of almond shells were extracted, isolated and characterised. The autohydrolysis process permitted the extraction of the hemicellulosic fraction obtaining a liquor rich in xylooligosaccharides (22.12 g/L). Then, two different delignification processes, alkaline and organosolv treatments, were proposed to obtain a very high purity lignin (≈90%) which could be further valorised for a wide variety of applications. The valorisation of the high cellulosic content of the delignified solids was carried out using two different methods. On the one hand, producing cellulose nanocrystals and on the other hand obtaining glucose by an enzymatic hydrolysis as well as a spent solid mainly composed by lignin (≈78 wt%). Thus, the proposed biorefinery approach could contribute to a circular economy as all the main components of the almond shells could be revalorised by environmentally friendly procedures.

Abstract
A novel acidic polysaccharide, named as AWPA, was extracted form Annona squamosa residue by 0.1 M NaOH alkaline solution and purified by DEAE-cellulose and Sephadex G-150. HPLC analysis indicated that AWPA was a homogeneous polysaccharide with molecular weight of 3.08 × 103 kDa. The monosaccharide composition of AWPA, determined by ion chromatography, was consisted of L-arabinose, D-galactose, d-glucose, D-mannose, D-galacturonic acid in a percentage of 15.58:13.48:60.14:9.02:1.78, respectively. The results of FT-IR, methylation and NMR showed that the sugar residue of AWPA were mainly composed of α-L-Araf-(1→, →4)-α-D-Glcp-(1→, →4)-β-D-Galp-(1→, →6)-β-D-Glcp-(1→, →4,6)-β-D-Galp(1→, →3,6)-α-D-Manp-(1→, respectively. The Congo red experiment on AWPA showed that there was helix conformation. The microstructure of AWPA was detected by scanning electron microscopy, showing that the shape of AWPA was reticular and its structure was irregular. AWPA had effectively α-glucosidase inhibitory activity and α-amylase inhibitory activity with IC50 of 0.667 mg/mL and 1.360 mg/mL, respectively. The inhibitory effects of AWPA on α-glucosidase and α-amylase were both reversible with mixed type and competitive type competition, respectively. The significance of manuscript was not only to avoid the waste of Annona squamosa residue, but provided alternative in the developments of inhibitors of α-glucosidase and α-amylase.

Abstract
Due to the environmental pollution problems caused by plastic-based packaging, the development of edible food packaging films is imminent. However, the performance of most edible packaging films is insufficient to meet practical applications, so recent studies have focused on the research of various fillers to improve film properties. This article reviews recent applications of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and cellulose nanofiber (CNF) in edible food packaging films including the effect on thickness, optical properties, barrier properties, water sensitivity, mechanical properties, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The main conclusion of this review is that the incorporation of CNC and CNF could significantly improve the performance of edible food packaging films. Particular finding is that although CNC and CNF can be used as excellent addition to improve the performance of edible food packaging films, there is a key "optimum" concentration. In addition, we also found that CNC and CNF as excellent controlled release agents and stabilizers significantly increased the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of edible food packaging films.

Abstract
Biobased materials present a great interest due to their properties and biodegradability. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) nanofiller, in various amounts, was incorporated into a carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)–glycerol (G) matrix in order to obtain nanocomposite systems with improved properties. The effect of the nanofiller on the structural features was investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, principal component analysis (PCA), two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS), and X-ray diffraction, while the sorption properties were evaluated by water vapor isotherms using the gravimetric method coupled with infrared spectroscopy. We observed the presence of the interactions taking place between the CMC-G and CNC involving the hydroxyl and carboxylate groups, which decreased the number of water sorption sites. Following this, the moisture content in the nanocomposite films decreased with the increase in the amount of CNC. Moreover, the bands associated to water molecules presented different wavenumber values separated for CMC-G and CNC components.
