Abstract
In this work, a nanocomposite film, designated as CS/PA, was fabricated by integrating chitosan (CS), porphyrinic porous coordination network (PCN), and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). PCN modified AgNPs was denoted as PCN-AgNPs (PA). The synthesis of PA was verified through transmission electron microscope, Zeta potential, hydrated particle size, element mapping. Furthermore, varying concentrations of PA (0.3 %, 0.4 %, 0.5 %, and 0.6 % w/w) were integrated into the CS matrix to preparate the CS/PA nanocomposite film. The experimental data demonstrated a significant enhancement (p < 0.05) in the tensile strength and elongation at break of the nanocomposite films, while water vapor permeability and water solubility significantly decreased (p < 0.05) as the PA content increased. Additionally, the CS/PA film showed good antibacterial properties against both gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. Notably, the CS/PA film effectively retarded the spoilage of fresh fish slices. The silver migration from the CS/PA film, measured at 33.02 μg/L, was found to be within the permissible limits set by the USEPA. Consequently, the CS/PA nanocomposite film holds immense promise for applications in food packaging industry.

Abstract
Polymer networks were synthesized using the condensation method between PMMA and melamine as cross-linkers. CuO nanoparticles (NPs) and activated carbon (AC) were used as a filler. The final products PMMA/Mel, PMMA/Mel-CuO, and PMMA/Mel-AC were tested for antibacterial activities against E.coli and S. aureus. The chemical structure and composition, thermal properties, and surface morphology of the new PMMA/Mel-based nanocomposites were investigated by various techniques. The XRD and EDX results showed the successful incorporation of CuO NPs and AC into the polymer matrix. Also, the thermal stability of the PMMA/Mel polymer was significantly enhanced after adding CuO nanoparticles. This finding showed that the PMMA/Mel-CuO and PMMA/Mel-AC nanocomposites have greater activity against both bacteria than PMMA/Mel. The PMMA/Mel-CuO and PMMA/Mel-AC polymers showed high activity against S. aureus bacteria, with inhibition zones of 22.6 mm and 11.3 mm, respectively. This confirms that small-sized nanoparticles have an effective role in killing bacterial cells.

Abstract
Improper disposal of traditional plastics leads to the generation of microplastics, resulting in severe pollution of land and oceans and posing a threat to human health and marine ecosystems. Hence, adopting eco-friendly bioplastics, particularly in food packaging, is essential. In this study, Enset starch-based biocomposite films, reinforced with Ethiopian bentonite clay at various ratios (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 % w/w) were prepared using solvent casting method. The effect of bentonite clay on biocomposite films on structural, physicochemical, and morphological properties were analyzed. Characterization tests confirmed the even distribution of bentonite, strengthening of bonds, and enhancement of the biocomposite film properties. The biocomposite film with 5 wt% bentonite clay incorporation into enset starch exhibits optimal performance; maximum strength (increased by 132 %), less water solubility (reduction in 33 %), reduction in water vapor permeability (decreased by 42 %), and better compatibility in the morphologies attributed by the intercalated silicate layer. This study highlights the effectiveness of bentonite clay in enhancing enset starch biocomposite properties, offering a promising eco-friendly solution for biodegradable food packaging and promoting sustainable resource utilization.

Abstract
Chitosan (CS) has received widespread attention in various fields due to its excellent antimicrobial properties, inherent biodegradability and biocompatibility. However, the water swelling property of chitosan films reduces their performance and becomes a major obstacle for their practical application. Herein, we develop a water-insoluble montmorillonite/chitosan nanocomposite film (CS/MMT-Cu) with anti-bacterial and fire-retardant properties via Cu2+-crosslinking technique. Cu2+ ions are coordinated with amino and hydroxyl groups to crosslink the chitosan chains and bind to the montmorillonite (MMT) via electrostatic forces. As a result, the content of MMT has a significant effect on the mechanical and flame-retardant properties of CS/MMT-Cu films, in which the maximum tensile strength and finite oxygen index are 30.6 MPa and 40.5 %, respectively. In addition, the CS/MMT-Cu films exhibit good anti-bacterial properties. Overall, the prepared CS/MMT-Cu films have a broad application prospect in various fields, such as flame-retardant material, packaging and coatings.

Abstract
Bionanocomposites are emerging as a pivotal innovation in sustainable food packaging, leveraging the strengths of biopolymers enhanced with nanoparticles for improved functionality. The increasing demand for sustainable packaging solutions, coupled with advancements in nanotechnology, has driven research in this field over the past decade. This review covers the full spectrum of developments in the field, from the classification and synthesis of bionanocomposites to their applications in food packaging and current research trends. A detailed trend analysis using Web of Science data highlighted the growth in bionanocomposite research, with over 17,000 articles published on this topic. Notably, more than 2000 of these articles focus specifically on packaging applications. This review also investigates the application trends for various food products, including fruits and vegetables, grains, meat, dairy products, bakery items, nuts, and oils. The review identifies a marked increase in publications related to bionanocomposite packaging since 2008. Notably, research on packaging applications has increasingly concentrated on fruits and vegetables, followed by meat, dairy products like cheese, and bakery products such as bread. A comprehensive analysis of research trends before 2010 and in 2024 underscores a shift from fundamental material science towards practical, real-world applications. This review provides valuable insights into the transformative potential of bionanocomposites for food packaging technologies and their role in advancing environmentally sustainable solutions.

Abstract
In recent years, polysaccharide-based biosensors have emerged as promising technologies for intelligent food packaging, offering innovative solutions to enhance food quality and safety. This review highlights advancements in designing, developing, and applying these biosensors, particularly those utilizing polysaccharides such as chitosan, cellulose and alginate. Engineered with nanomaterials like ZnO, silver, and carbon nano-tubes demonstrated high sensitivity in real-time monitoring of food spoilage indicators, including pH changes, volatile nitrogen compounds and microbial activity. We discuss the electrochemical properties of these biosensors, highlighting how the integration of electrochemical methods significantly improves their detection capabilities within packaging environments, leading to sensor sensitivity enhancement, greater accuracy, and spoilage detection, ultimately extending the shelf life of perishable food products. Additionally, the review addresses the practical challenges of industrial implementation and explores future research directions for optimizing sensor functionality and scalability. The findings underscore the potential of polysaccharide-based intelligent packaging as a sustainable and effective alternative to conventional methods, paving the way for broader commercial adoption.

Abstract
The objective was to develop an active chitosan-based coating and to evaluate its effect on the shelf life and microbial safety of bread. Bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNF) and various levels (0.5%, 1%, and 2%) of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were in the chitosan (CS) film. Characterization of films was determined by analyzing WVP, ultraviolet barrier, and opacity as well as FTIR, XRD, DSC, TGA, and SEM. The water vapor permeability (WVP) of CS was remarkably (p < .05) decreased from 3.75 × 10-10 to 0.85 × 10-10 g/smPa when filled with BCNF and 2% AgNPs. Thermal and structural properties were enhanced in nanoparticle-included films. Applying CS/BCNF/AgNPs coatings for bread samples demonstrated a significant improvement in moisture retention and a decrease in the hardness (from 10.2 to 7.05 N for CS and CS/BCNF/1% AgNPs coated samples, respectively). Moreover, microbial shelf life of bread sample increased from 5 to 38 days after packaging with CS/BCNF/2% AgNPs film. After a storage period of 15 days at 25°C, no fungal growth was detected in bread samples which were coated with nanocomposite suspensions containing 1% and 2% AgNPs. However, at the same condition, yeast and mold counts was 7.91 log CFU/g for control sample. In conclusion, the CS/BCNF/2% AgNPs film might have the potential for use as active packaging of bread.

Abstract
The increasing global concern over environmental plastic waste has propelled the progress of biodegradable supplies for food packaging. Biopolymer-based packaging is undergoing modifications to enhance its mechanical properties, aligning with the requirements of smart food packaging. Polymer nanocomposites, incorporating reinforcements such as fibers, platelets, and nanoparticles, demonstrate significantly improved mechanical, thermal, optical, and physicochemical characteristics. Fungi, in particular, have garnered significant interest for producing metallic nanoparticles, offering advantages such as easy scaling up, streamlined downstream handling, economic feasibility, and a large surface area. This review provides an overview of nano-additives utilized in biopackaging, followed by an exploration of the recent advancements in using microbial-resistant metal nanoparticles for food packaging. The mycofabrication process, involving fungi in the extracellular or intracellular synthesis of metal nanoparticles, is introduced. Fungal functionalized nanostructures represent a promising avenue for application across various stages of food processing, packaging, and safety. The integration of fungal-derived nanostructures into food packaging materials presents a sustainable and effective approach to combatting microbial contamination." By harnessing fungal biomass, this research contributes to the development of economical and environmentally friendly methods for enhancing food packaging functionality. The findings underscore the promising role of fungal-based nanotechnologies in advancing the field of active food packaging, addressing both safety and sustainability concerns. The study concludes with an investigation into potential fungal isolates for nanoparticle biosynthesis, highlighting their relevance and potential in advancing sustainable and efficient packaging solutions.

Abstract
Eco-friendly nanotechnology-enabled biopolymers are one of the novel concepts of packaging materials to substitute traditional synthetic polymers and their composites. This article succinctly reviews the recent developments of introducing additional functionalities to biopolymers using metal and metal oxide nanoparticles. The functionality of metal nanoparticles such as silver, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, copper oxide, gold, and magnesium oxide, as food packaging materials were discussed. The addition of nanoparticles in biopolymers improves mechanical properties, gas barrier properties, durability, temperature stability, moisture stability, antimicrobial activity, antioxidant property, and UV absorbance and can prevent the presence of ethylene and oxygen, hence extending the shelf life of foodstuffs. Other than this, the functional activity of these biopolymer composite films helps them to act like smart or intelligent packaging. The selection of metal nanoparticles, particle migration, toxicological effect, and potential future scope in the food packaging industry are also reviewed.

Abstract
Global concerns about food security, driven by rising demand, have prompted the exploration of nanotechnology as a solution to enhance food supply. This shift comes in response to the limitations of conventional technologies in meeting the ever-increasing demand for food products. Consequently, nanoparticles play a crucial role in enhancing food production, preservation, and extending shelf life by imparting exceptional properties to materials. Nanoparticles and nanostructures with attributes like expansive surface area and antimicrobial efficacy, are versatile in both traditional packaging and integration into biopolymer matrices. These distinctive qualities contribute to their extensive use in various food sector applications. Hence, this review explores the physicochemical properties, functions, and biological aspects of nanoparticles in the context of food packaging. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of nanoparticles with different biopolymers, alongside its different potential applications such as food shelf-life extenders, antimicrobial agents and as nanomaterials for developing smart packaging systems were summarily explored. While the ongoing exploration of this research area is evident, our review highlights the substantial potential of nanomaterials to emerge as a viable choice for food packaging if the challenges regarding toxicity are carefully and effectively modulated.

Abstract
Recent decades have witnessed a surge in research interest in bio-nanocomposite-based packaging materials, but still, a lack of systematic analysis exists in this domain. Bio-based packaging materials pose a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based packaging materials. The current work employs bibliometric analysis to deliver a comprehensive outline on the role of bio nanocomposites in packaging. India, Iran, and China were revealed to be the top three nations actively engaged in this domain in total publications. Islamic Azad University in Iran and Universiti Putra Malaysia in Malaysia are among the world's best institutions in active research and publications in this field. The extensive collaboration between nations and institutions highlights the significance of a holistic approach towards bio-nanocomposite. The National Natural Science Foundation of China is the leading funding body in this field of research. Among authors, Jong whan Rhim secured the topmost citations (2234) in this domain (13 publications). Among journals, Carbohydrate Polymers secured the maximum citation count (4629) from 36 articles; the initial one was published in 2011. Bio nanocomposite is the most frequently used keyword. Researchers and policymakers focussing on sustainable packaging solutions will gain crucial insights on the current research status on packaging solutions using bio-nanocomposites from the conclusions.

Abstract
Biopolymer-derived polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) are a class of materials that have emerged as promising candidates for developing advanced electrochemical sensors due to their tunable properties, biocompatibility, cost-effective production, and high surface area. PECs are formed by combining positively and negatively charged polymers, resulting in a network with intriguing properties that can be tailored for specific sensing applications. The resultant PECs-based nanocomposites were used to modify the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to detect the sulfamethazine (SFZ) antibiotic drug. In addition, electrochemical studies using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) are used to evaluate the SFZ detection ability. Similarly, various microscopic and spectroscopic studies investigated the nano composite's structural features and morphological behavior. The κ-CGN/P(Am-co-DMDAAc)-GO modified GCE demonstrated excellent detection ability of SFZ with the nano molar range and without interference with similar structural components. Furthermore, the newly fabricated electrode κ-CGN/P(Am-co-DMDAAc)-GO was derived from naturally available materials, water-soluble, low cost, biocompatible, exhibits good conductivity, and excellent catalytic properties. Finally, κ-CGN/P(Am-co-DMDAAc)-GO- modified GCE has versatile, practical applications for detecting SFZ in real-time samples and determining the efficacy of an antibacterial activity.

Abstract
Innovations in sophisticated optoelectronic devices have increased interest in high-refractive index polymers. Herein, we report innovative nanocomposite films with high linear and nonlinear refractive indices prepared by casting chitosan (Cs) with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) (50:50 wt%) along with different concentrations (10-50 wt%) of sodium montmorillonite (NaMMT) nanoclay. The refractive indices in addition to other optical parameters of homopolymers and hybrid materials were investigated by UV-Vis. spectroscopy and optical modeling to assess their potential applications in optics. Besides, the structure, morphology, and thermal stability of the prepared films were investigated by a multitude of experimental techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTG). The ATR-FTIR, XRD, SEM, and AFM measurements confirmed the complete exfoliation of NaMMT nanolayers in the Cs/PVA matrix. The TGA/DTG revealed an increase in the thermal stability of Cs/PVA film with increasing clay content. The UV-Vis. measurements revealed a decrease in the optical energy gap (Eg) and a substantial increase in the linear (nD) and nonlinear (n2) refractive indices as clay content increased. Additionally, the nanohybrids displayed low UV transmission and reflected about 80 % of UV rays, making them excellent candidates for UV protection. For the first time, the dissipation factor (tanδ) in the UV/Vis. region has been calculated and fitted with the Drude-Lorentz model to predict the plasma frequency (ωp), resonance frequency (ω0), and electron lifetime (τ) of pristine polymers and nanocomposites.

Abstract
The packaging problem with petroleum-based synthetic polymers prompts the development of edible packaging films. The high value-added reuse of navel orange peel pomace, which is rich in bioactive compounds, merited more considerations. Herein, nanocellulose (ONCC) and soluble dietary fiber (OSDF) from navel orange peel pomace are firstly used to prepare dietary fiber-based edible packaging films using a simple physical blend method, and the impact of ONCC on the film's properties is analyzed. Adopting three methods in a step-by-step approach to find the best formula for edible packaging films. The results show that dietary-fiber-based edible packaging films with 4 wt.% ONCC form a network structure, and their crystallinity, maximum pyrolysis temperature, and melting temperature are improved. What's more, dietary-fiber-based edible packaging films have a wide range of potential uses in edible packaging.

Abstract
MFC can have dual functions; they can generate electricity from industrial and domestic effluents while purifying wastewater. Most MFC designs comprise a membrane which physically separates the cathode and anode compartments while keeping them electrically connected, playing a significant role in its efficiency. Popular commercial membranes such as Nafion, Hyflon and Zifron have excellent ionic conductivity, but have several drawbacks, mainly their prohibitive cost and non-biodegradability, preventing the large-scale application of MFC. Fabrication of composite materials that can function better at a much lower cost while also being environment-friendly has been the endeavor of few researchers over the past years. The current review aims to apprise readers of the latest trends of the past decade in fabricating composite membranes (CM) for MFC. For emphasis on environmental-friendly CM, the review begins with biopolymers, moving on to the carbon-polymer, polymer-polymer, and metal-polymer CM. Lastly, critical analysis towards technology-oriented propositions and realistic future directives in terms of strengths, weakness, opportunities, challenges (SWOC analysis) of the application of CM in MFC have been discussed for their possible large-scale use. The focus of this review is the development of hybrid materials as membranes for fuel cells, while underscoring the need for environment-friendly composites and processes.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC), as a natural renewable polymer material, has the advantages of porous nanonetwork structure, high degree of polymerization, high purity, high crystallinity, excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, BC lacks antibacterial properties, which leads to the limitation of BC material in food packaging and medical materials. In this study, a new antibacterial material using the combination of montmorillonite (MMT), BC and exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by Weissella confusa H2 was synthesized. Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that BC-EPS, BC-MMT and BC-EPS-MMT composite membranes conformed to the typical type I cellulose structure. Compared to BC membrane, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the porosity of BC-EPS, BC-MMT and BC-EPS-MMT composite membranes was low and compact. The physical properties of BC-EPS, BC-MTT and BC-EPS-MTT composite membranes showed lower water vapor transmittance. The BC-MTT and BC-EPS-MTT composite membranes exhibit a lower swelling ratio in 120 min. The thermal properties show that BC-EPS, BC-MTT and BC-EPS-MTT composite membranes have higher thermal stability (352 °C, 310 °C, 314 °C). Additionally, both BC-MMT and BC-EPS-MMT demonstrated strong inhibitory effects against various bacterial strains, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella paratyphi A, and Bacillus subtilis. The exceptional properties exhibited by composite membranes establishes them as a highly promising option in the field of food packaging and medical material applications.

Abstract
Polysaccharide-based films are favored in the food packaging industry because of their advantages of green and safe characters, as well as natural degradability, but due to the structural defects of polysaccharides, they also have the disadvantages of high water vapor permeability (WVP), which greatly limits their application in the food packaging industry. To break the limitation, numerous methods, e.g., physical and/or chemical methods, have been employed. This review mainly elaborates the up-to-date research status of the application of polysaccharide-based films (PBFs) in food packaging area, including various films from cellulose and its derivatives, starch, chitosan, pectin, alginate, pullulan and so on, while the methods of reducing the WVP of PBFs, mainly divided into physical and chemical methods, are summarized, as well as the discussions about the existing problems and development trends of PBFs. In the end, suggestions about the future development of WVP of PBFs are presented.

Abstract
Due to environmental concerns, there is an increasing need to reduce the use of synthetic and non-renewable packaging materials to reduce waste and increase sustainability. This study aimed to characterise sodium alginate edible-based films (SA) incorporated with laurel leaf extract (LLE) and olive leaf extract (OLE) obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction. Determination of total phenolic content, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity was performed for the extracts and films. Also, thickness, tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus of elasticity, opacity and colour, moisture content, water vapour permeability (WVP), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra, and surface morphology by scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses were performed for the films. LLE yielded better results in terms of phenolic content (195 mg GAE/g), antioxidant (2.1 TE/g extract) and antimicrobial activity (MIC at 1% for Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus, and 1.8% for Enterococcus faecalis). For the films, the simultaneous incorporation of LLE 1% (w/v) and OLE 1% (w/v) resulted in a significant reduction of approximately 2 log CFU/g against S. aureus. The addition of LLE and OLE extracts also proved to improve barrier properties (lower WVP for SA films with LLE 1% + OLE 1%, 3.49 × 10-11 g m-1 s-1 Pa-1) and promoted changes in resistance and flexibility. The results demonstrated that active alginate-based films can be valuable for enhancing food preservation.

Abstract
In this study, we elaborated new chitosan-based films reinforced by iron(III)-containing chitosan nanoparticles Fe(III)-CS-NPs at different concentrations. We found that the optimum concentration of Fe(III)-CS-NPs for the improvement of antibacterial and mechanical properties of the films was 10% (σb = ca. 8.8 N/mm2, εb = ca. 41%, inhibition zone for S. aureus = ca. 16.8 mm and for E. coli = ca. 11.2 mm). Also, using the click-chemistry approach (thiol-ene reaction), we have synthesized a novel water-soluble cationic derivative of chitin. The addition of this derivative of chitin to the chitosan polymer matrix of the elaborated film significantly improved its mechanical (σb = ca. 11.6 N/mm2, εb = ca. 75%) and antimicrobial (inhibition zone for S. aureus = ca. 19.6 mm and for E. coli = ca. 14.2 mm) properties. The key mechanism of the antibacterial action of the obtained films is the disruption of the membranes of bacterial cells. The elaborated antibacterial films are of interest for potential biomedical and food applications.

Abstract
A recent focus on the development of biobased polymer packaging films has come about in response to the environmental hazards caused by petroleum-based, nonbiodegradable packaging materials. Among biopolymers, chitosan is one of the most popular due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, antibacterial properties, and ease of use. Due to its ability to inhibit gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, yeast, and foodborne filamentous fungi, chitosan is a suitable biopolymer for developing food packaging. However, more than the chitosan is required for active packaging. In this review, we summarize chitosan composites which show active packaging and improves food storage condition and extends its shelf life. Active compounds such as essential oils and phenolic compounds with chitosan are reviewed. Moreover, composites with polysaccharides and various nanoparticles are also summarized. This review provides valuable information for selecting a composite that enhances shelf life and other functional qualities when embedding chitosan. Furthermore, this report will provide directions for the development of novel biodegradable food packaging materials.

Abstract
This study presents the development and characterization of a nanocomposite material, consisting of thermoplastic starch (TPS) reinforced with bentonite clay (BC) and encapsulated with vitamin B2 (VB). The research is motivated by the potential of TPS as a renewable and biodegradable substitute for petroleum-based materials in the biopolymer industry. The effects of VB on the physicochemical properties of TPS/BC films, including mechanical and thermal properties, water uptake, and weight loss in water, were investigated. In addition, the surface morphology and chemical composition of the TPS samples were analyzed using high-resolution SEM microscopy and EDS, providing insight into the structure-property relationship of the nanocomposites. The results showed that the addition of VB significantly increased the tensile strength and Young's modulus of TPS/BC films, with the highest values observed for nanocomposites containing 5 php of VB and 3 php of BC. Furthermore, the release of VB was controlled by the BC content, with higher BC content leading to lower VB release. These findings demonstrate the potential of TPS/BC/VB nanocomposites as environmentally friendly materials with improved mechanical properties and controlled release of VB, which can have significant applications in the biopolymer industry.

Abstract
There has been a new approach in the development of antibacterials in order to enhance the antibacterial potential. The nanoparticles are tagged on to the surface of other metals or metal oxides and polymers to achieve nanocomposites. These have shown significant antibacterial properties when compared to nanoparticles. In this article we explore the antibacterial potentials of metal-based and metal-polymer-based nanocomposites, various techniques which are involved in the synthesis of the metal-polymer, nanocomposites, mechanisms of action, and their advantages, disadvantages, and applications.

Abstract
This review summarizes the latest developments in the design, fabrication, and application of various Cu-based nanofillers to prepare biopolymer-based functional packaging films, focusing on the effects of inorganic nanoparticles on the optical, mechanical, gas barrier properties, moisture sensitivity, and functional properties of the films. In addition, the potential application of Cu-based nanoparticle-added biopolymer films for fresh food preservation and the effect of nanoparticle migration on food safety were discussed. The incorporation of Cu-based nanoparticles improved the film properties with enhanced functional performance. Cu-based nanoparticles such as copper oxide, copper sulfide, copper ions, and copper alloys affect biopolymer-based films differently. The properties of composite films containing Cu-based nanoparticles depend on the concentration of the filler, the state of dispersion, and the interaction of the nanoparticles with the biopolymer matrix in the film. The composite film filled with Cu-based nanoparticles effectively extended the shelf life by maintaining the quality of various fresh foods and securing safety. However, studies on the migration characteristics and safety of copper-based nanoparticle food packaging films are currently being conducted on plastic-based films such as polyethylene, and research on bio-based films is limited.

Abstract
One of the crucial challenges of our time is to effectively use metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) as an alternative way to combat drug-resistant infections. Metal and metal oxide NPs such as Ag, Ag2O, Cu, Cu2O, CuO, and ZnO have found their way against antimicrobial resistance. However, they also suffer from several limitations ranging from toxicity issues to resistance mechanisms by complex structures of bacterial communities, so-called biofilms. In this regard, scientists are urgently looking for convenient approaches to develop heterostructure synergistic nanocomposites which could overcome toxicity issues, enhance antimicrobial activity, improve thermal and mechanical stability, and increase shelf life. These nanocomposites provide a controlled release of bioactive substances into the surrounding medium, are cost effective, reproducible, and scalable for real life applications such as food additives, nanoantimicrobial coating in food technology, food preservation, optical limiters, the bio medical field, and wastewater treatment application. Naturally abundant and non-toxic Montmorillonite (MMT) is a novel support to accommodate NPs, due to its negative surface charge and control release of NPs and ions. At the time of this review, around 250 articles have been published focusing on the incorporation of Ag-, Cu-, and ZnO-based NPs into MMT support and thus furthering their introduction into polymer matrix composites dominantly used for antimicrobial application. Therefore, it is highly relevant to report a comprehensive review of Ag-, Cu-, and ZnO-modified MMT. This review provides a comprehensive overview of MMT-based nanoantimicrobials, particularly dealing with preparation methods, materials characterization, and mechanisms of action, antimicrobial activity on different bacterial strains, real life applications, and environmental and toxicity issues.

Abstract
In this work, chemical modification of chitosan using cationic thiazolium groups was investigated with the aim to improve water solubility and antimicrobial properties of chitosan. Enzymatic synthesis and ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) chemistry were employed to synthesize and attach to chitosan through the amine groups the molecule bearing thiazolium moieties, quaternized 4-(2-(4-methylthiazol-5-yl) ethoxy)-4-oxobutanoic acid (MTBAQ). On the basis of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), elemental analysis and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR), around 95 % of the available amine groups of chitosan (of 25 % degree of acetylation) reacted. The resulting derivative was water soluble at physiological pH and exhibit excellent antimicrobial activity against Listeria innocua, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus and Methicillin Resistant S. aureus Gram-positive bacteria (MIC = 8-32 μg/ mL), whereas its efficiency decreases against fungi Candida albicans and Eschericia coli Gram-negative bacterium. Subsequently, the thiazolium chitosan derivative was employed as antimicrobial component (up to 7 wt%) of chitosan/glycerol based films. The incorporation of the chitosan derivative does not modify significantly the characteristics of the film in terms of thermal and mechanical properties, while enhances considerably the antimicrobial activity.

Abstract
Food packaging is an important concept for consumer satisfaction and the increased shelf life of food products. The introduction of novel food packaging materials has become an emerging trend in recent years, which could be mainly due to environmental pollution caused by plastic packaging and to reduce food waste. Recently, numerous studies have been carried out on nanoclays or nanolayered silicate to be used in packaging material development as reinforcing filler composites. Different types of nanoclays have been used as food packaging materials, while montmorillonite (MMT), halloysite, bentonite (BT), Cloisite, and organically modified nanoclays have become of great interest. The incorporation of nanoclays into the packaging matrix improves the mechanical and barrier properties and at the same time prolongs the biodegradation of the packaging material. The purpose of this article is to examine the development of nanoclay-based food packaging materials. The review article highlights the current state of research on bio-based polymers with nanoclay for food packaging. In addition, the report analyses the mechanical, barrier, and antibacterial characteristics of nanoclay-based food packaging materials. Finally, it discusses the migration of nanoclays, toxicity levels, and the legislation associated with the application of nanoclays. Graphical abstract

Abstract
In this study, a novel active chitosan (CH) packaging film that incorporates garlic leaf extract (GL) and stem cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) was prepared. The addition of CNC to the CH film increased its tensile strength, hydrophilicity, thermal stability, and water/oxygen barrier and decreased its water contact angle and weight-loss rate, while the addition of GL greatly enhanced its antioxidant and antibacterial activities. SEM and AFM analyses showed that the CNC agglomerates and deposits in the lower layer and the surface roughness of the film was the highest at 1.2 % concentration. The optimal composition of the film was determined to be 0.8 % CNC and 4 % GL by the fuzzy mathematics evaluation method. Then, black garlic was preserved with the optimized coating by electrostatic spraying and was found to slow water loss and migration, while its excellent antioxidant activities decreased the degree of browning during 90 d of storage.

Abstract
The current development of science and the contemporary market, combined with high demands from consumers, force manufacturers and scientists to implement new solutions in various industries, including the packaging industry. The emergence of new solutions in the field of intelligent packaging has provided an opportunity to extend the quality of food products and ensures that food will not cause any harm to the consumer's health. Due to physical, chemical, or biological factors, the state of food may be subject to degradation. The degradation may occur because the packaging, i.e., the protective element of food products, may be damaged during storage, transport, or other logistic and sales activities. This is especially important since most food products are highly perishable, and the maintenance of the quality of a food product is the most critical issue in the entire supply chain. Given the importance of the topic, the main purpose of this article was to provide a general overview of the application of biosensors, sensors, and tags in intelligent packaging used for food products. A short history and the genesis of intelligent packaging are presented, and the individual possibilities of application of sensors, biosensors, gas sensors, and RFID tags, as well as nanotechnology, in the area of the packaging of food products are characterized.

Abstract
Research on bionanocomposites has been developed, while its application as food packaging is still being explored. They are usually made from natural polymers such as cellulose acetate, chitosan (CS), and polyvinyl alcohol. Bionanocomposite materials can replace traditional non-biodegradable plastic packaging materials, enabling them to use new, high-performance, lightweight, and environmentally friendly composite materials. However, this natural polymer has a weakness in mechanical properties. Therefore, a composite system is needed that will improve the properties of the biodegradable food packaging. The aim of this mini-review is to demonstrate recent progress in the synthesis, modification, characterization, and application of bionanocomposites reported by previous researchers. The focus is on the preparation and characterization of CS-based bionanocomposites. The mechanical properties of CS-based food packaging can be improved by adding reinforcement from inorganic materials such as organoclay. Meanwhile, the anti-bacterial properties of CS-based food packaging can be improved by adding nanoparticles such as Ag and ZnO.

Abstract
Cellulose, starch, chitosan, polylactic acid, and polyhydroxyalkanoates are seen as promising alternatives to conventional plastics in food packaging. However, the application of these biopolymers in the food packaging industry on a commercial scale is limited due to their poor performance and processing characteristics and high production cost. This review aims to provide an insight into the recent advances in research that address these limitations. Loading of nanofillers into polymer matrix could improve thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties of biopolymers. Blending of biopolymers also offers the possibility of acquiring newer materials with desired characteristics. However, nanofillers tend to agglomerate when loaded above an optimum level in the polymer matrix. This article throws light on different methods adopted by researchers to achieve uniform dispersion of nanofillers in bionanocomposites. Furthermore, different processing methods available for converting biopolymers into different packaging forms are discussed. In addition, the potential utilization of agricultural, brewery, and industrial wastes as feedstock for the production of biopolymers, and integrated biorefinery concept that not only keep the total production cost of biopolymers low but are also environment-friendly, are discussed. Finally, future research prospects in this field and the possible contribution of biopolymers to sustainable development are presented. This review will certainly be helpful to researchers working on sustainable food packaging, and companies exploring pilot projects to scale up biopolymer production for industrial applications.

Abstract
Single-layered films, based on furcellaran and protein hydrolysates from soybean bran (1st layer), were obtained. Moreover, a procedure for the preparation of double-layered films was developed, in which an ethanol extract from soybean bran was deposited onto the 1st layer. It was checked how the addition of the 2nd layer affects the functional properties of the film. The addition of the 2nd layer increased the thermal properties, modulus of elasticity and antioxidant activity, while decreases were noted for tensile strength and elongation at break parameters. The films were used as packaging materials for storing butter and the active films did not extend the quality of butter during storage, however, they behaved in the same way as synthetic films. Therefore they have the potential to be used as packaging material instead of a synthetic film.

Abstract
In the present study, peel waste of pitaya (Hylocereus spp.) was used to develop a novel active and functional film. The film was developed with a combination of the white-fleshed pitaya peel pectin (WPPP) as a biopolymer and white-fleshed pitaya peel betacyanins (WPPB) as an active constituent, respectively. Furthermore, montmorillonite (MMT), a cheap and environmental-friendly silicate material, was introduced into film matrix as a filler to reduce the moisture sensitivity of the film. The effect of the incorporation of WPPB on the properties of WPPP/MMT films was investigated. The colorimetric response of WPPP/MMT/WPPB to pH and ammonia was examined, respectively. Moreover, WPPP/MMT/WPPB-2 was employed to monitor the freshness of shrimp. The color of the film changed from redness to reddish-brown, and further to brownness, echoing the shrimp turned from fresh to spoiled. Therefore, WPPP/MMT/WPPB-2 composite films showed promise for the applications in monitoring the freshness of shrimp.

Abstract
Inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) and natural antioxidant compounds are an emerging trend in the food industry. Incorporating these substances in biobased and biodegradable matrices as polysaccharides (e.g., starch, cellulose, and chitosan) and proteins has highlighted the potential in active food packaging applications due to more significant antimicrobial, antioxidant, UV blocking, oxygen scavenging, water vapor permeability effects, and low environmental impact. In recent years, the migration of metal NPs and metal oxides in food contact packaging and their toxicological potential have raised concerns about the safety of the nanomaterials. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the main biobased and biodegradable polymer nanocomposites, inorganic NPs, natural antioxidants, and their potential use in active food packaging. The intrinsic properties of NPs and natural antioxidant actives in packaging materials are evaluated to extend shelf-life, safety, and food quality. Toxicological and safety aspects of inorganic NPs are highlighted to understand the current controversy on applying some nanomaterials in food packaging. The synergism of inorganic NPs and plant-derived natural antioxidant actives (e.g., vitamins, polyphenols, and carotenoids) and essential oils (EOs) potentiated the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of biodegradable nanocomposite films. Biodegradable packaging films based on green NPs-this is biosynthesized from plant extracts-showed suitable mechanical and barrier properties and had a lower environmental impact and offered efficient food protection. Furthermore, AgNPs and TiO2 NPs released metal ions from packaging into contents insufficiently to cause harm to human cells, which could be helpful to understanding critical gaps and provide progress in the packaging field.

Abstract
In this study, lycopene microcapsules (LMs) were prepared using chitosan (CS) and carboxymethyl CS (CMCS) as the wall materials. Sodium alginate (SA) and konjac glucomannan (KGM) were used as substrates to fabricate LM/SA/KGM composite films. Results showed that when 2.0 % CMCS was employed, the resulting LMs had the maximum embedding rate of 83.17 %, smallest particle sizes, and stable zeta potentials. The LMs still had a high retention rate after 10 days of storage at 4 and 25 °C. When 2.0 % LMs were used, the corresponding composite film exhibited the best antibacterial properties, oxidation resistance, a high transparency (82.3 %), and a strong water vapor barrier (2.39 × 10-10 g/m·s·Pa). Finally, the effects of the as-prepared composite films on the preservation of sweet cherries stored at 0 °C for 15 days were investigated. The results indicated that the LM/SA/KGM composite film effectively prolonged the shelf lives of sweet cherries and efficiently delayed the decline in the decay rate, pH, contents of soluble solids, and other indicators. The application of LM/SA/KGM composite films in fruit and vegetable preservation has development prospects and provides a reference for expanding the application range of lycopene and enhancing fruit and vegetable preservation.

Abstract
Chitosan and its derivatives are bioactive molecules that have recently been used in various fields, especially in the medical field. The antibacterial, antitumor, and immunomodulatory properties of chitosan have been extensively studied. Chitosan can be used as a drug-delivery carrier in the form of hydrogels, sponges, microspheres, nanoparticles, and thin films to treat diseases, especially those of the skin and soft tissue such as injuries and lesions of the skin, muscles, blood vessels, and nerves. Chitosan can prevent and also treat soft tissue diseases by exerting diverse biological effects such as antibacterial, antitumor, antioxidant, and tissue regeneration effects. Owing to its antitumor properties, chitosan can be used as a targeted therapy to treat soft tissue tumors. Moreover, owing to its antibacterial and antioxidant properties, chitosan can be used in the prevention and treatment of soft tissue infections. Chitosan can stop the bleeding of open wounds by promoting platelet agglutination. It can also promote the regeneration of soft tissues such as the skin, muscles, and nerves. Drug-delivery carriers containing chitosan can be used as wound dressings to promote wound healing. This review summarizes the structure and biological characteristics of chitosan and its derivatives. The recent breakthroughs and future trends of chitosan and its derivatives in therapeutic effects and drug delivery functions including anti-infection, promotion of wound healing, tissue regeneration and anticancer on soft tissue diseases are elaborated.

Abstract
A wound can be surgical, cuts from an operation or due to accident and trauma. The infected wound, as a result of bacteria growth within the damaged skin, interrupts the natural wound healing process and significantly impacts the quality of life. Wound dressing is an important segment of the skincare industry with its economic burden estimated at $ 20.4 billion (in 2021) in the global market. The results of recent clinical trials suggest that the use of modern dressings can be the easiest, most accessible, and most cost-effective way to treat chronic wounds and, hence, holds significant promise. With the sheer number of dressings in the market, the selection of correct dressing is confusing for clinicians and healthcare workers. The aim of this research was to review widely used types of antibacterial wound dressings, as well as emerging products, for their efficiency and mode of action. In this review, we focus on introducing antibiotics and antibacterial nanoparticles as two important and clinically widely used categories of antibacterial agents. Abstract
The incorporation of herbal extracts in wound dressing materials is an important concept that has been researched recently. In this study, alginate films incorporated in the various ratio (0.25–1% v/v) of Hypericum perforatum extract (HPE) for potential applications of wound dressing were successfully prepared by solvent-casting method. The obtained films were examined for cytotoxicity, in vitro wound healing potential, swelling behavior, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. When compared to the alginate film (Al) alone, HPE incorporated alginate films (HPE/Al) exhibit improved antioxidant properties according to the results of CUPRAC assay and antioxidant activity increases with the rate of HPE. Also, HPE/Al films exhibited antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, and addition with the HPE extract into films significantly increased the antibacterial activity against S. aureus. All film samples had no cytotoxic effects on fibroblast cell line and HPE/Al films showed a proliferative effect with high extract concentrations (1%) compared to extract free-films. Also, scratch assay results show that films containing 0.5% (v/v) HPE may have a positive effect on wound healing. The results have shown that the newly developed HPE incorporated alginate films are a candidate as antibacterial, and antioxidant wound dressing for use on burn or excision wounds.

Abstract
Traditional food packaging systems help reduce food wastage, but they also produce environmental impacts when not properly disposed of. Bio-based polymers are a promising solution to overcome these impacts, but they have poor barrier and mechanical properties. This work evaluates two strategies to improve these properties in pectin films: the incorporation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) or sodium montmorillonite (MMT) nanoparticles, and an additional layer of chitosan (i.e., a bilayer film). The bionanocomposites and bilayer films were characterized in terms of optical, morphological, hygroscopic, mechanical and barrier properties. The inclusion of the nanofillers in the polymer reduced the water vapor permeability and the hydrophilicity of the films without compromising their visual properties (i.e., their transparency). However, the nanoparticles did not substantially improve the mechanical properties of the bionanocomposites. Regarding the bilayer films, FTIR and contact angle studies revealed no surface and/or chemical modifications, confirming only physical coating/lamination between the two polymers. These bilayer films exhibited a dense homogenous structure, with intermediate optical and hygroscopic properties. An additional layer of chitosan did not improve the mechanical, water vapor and oxygen barrier properties of the pectin films. However, this additional layer made the material more hydrophobic, which may play an important role in the application of pectin as a food packaging material.

Abstract
In this study, chitosan (CS) film containing covalent organic frameworks (COFs) immobilized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were developed for food packaging with improved antibacterial activities and film properties. COFs-AgNPs were fabricated via in-situ synthesis of immobilizing AgNPs on COFs. Transmission electron microscope, Zeta potential, X-ray diffraction, element mapping and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the successful fabrication of COFs-AgNPs, and COFs-AgNPs showed superior antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. Furthermore, the as-prepared COFs-AgNPs composite was further used to fabricate CS composite films (CS/COFs-AgNPs) by a solution casting method. The findings showed that the tensile strength of the nanocomposite films enhanced dramatically with the increase of the COFs-AgNPs content, while the UV-visible light barrier property, water swelling and solubility properties, and water vapor permeability (WVP) decreased significantly. Not only that, the CS/COFs-AgNPs nanocomposite films also showed outstanding antibacterial activity and effectively prolonged the storage time of white crucian carp (Carassius auratus). As a result, CS/COFs-AgNPs nanocomposite films show great potential in active food packaging.

Abstract
The aim of this research was to fabricate active nanocomposite films by incorporation of nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiONPs) (3, 6 and 9% w/w) into the chitosan-based films. The NiONPs were synthesized by solution combustion method and the films were prepared by solvent casting method. The formation of new interactions and increasing of films' crystallinity were confirmed by FT-IR and XRD analyses. Uniform dispersion of NiONPs at lower concentrations and their aggregation at level of 9% was confirmed by FE-SEM observations. Water barrier properties, tensile strength, thermal properties and surface hydrophobicity of films enhanced by addition of 6% NiONPs. Photocatalytic activity of nanocomposites was confirmed by absorption of 72% of methyl orange during 270 min under UV irradiation. The nanocomposite films exhibited good antibacterial activity against gram-positive (S. aureus) and gram-negative (S. typhimurium) bacteria. Therefore, the chitosan-NiONPs nanocomposite films could be used for active food packaging applications and photodecolorization purposes.
