Nano-hydroxyapatite incorporated gelatin/zein nanofibrous membranes: Fabrication, characterization and copper adsorption

Enhanced copper removal by magnesium modified biochar derived from Alternanthera philoxeroides

Adsorption processes are being widely used by various researchers for the removal of heavy metals from waste streams and biochar has been frequently used as an adsorbent. In this study, a MgO-loaded biochar derived from Alternanthera philoxeroides (MAPB) was synthesized for the removal of Cu(II). Compared with other biochar absorbents, MAPB showed a relatively slow adsorption kinetics, but an effective removal of Cu(II) with a maximum sorption capacity of 1, 238 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism of Cu(II) by MAPB was mainly controlled by chemical precipitation as Cu2(OH)3NO3, complexation and ion replacement. Fixed bed column with MAPB packed in same dosage (1, 000 mg) and different bed depth (1.3, 2.6 and 3.9 cm) showed that the increased of bed depth by mixing MAPB with quartz sand could increase the removal of Cu(II). The fitted breakthrough (BT) models showed that mixing MAPB with support media could reduce the mass transfer rate, increase the dynamic adsorption capacity and BT time. Therefore, MAPB adsorbent act as a highly efficient long-term adsorbent for Cu(II) contaminated water treatment may have great ecological and environmental significance.

Highly Hydrophobic Gelatin Nanocomposite Film Assisted by Nano-ZnO/(3-Aminopropyl) Triethoxysilane/Stearic Acid Coating for Liquid Food Packaging

Biodegradable gelatin (G) food packaging films are in increasing demand as the substitution of petroleum-based preservative materials. However, G packaging films universally suffer from weak hydrophobicity in practical applications. Constructing a hydrophobic micro/nanocoating with low surface energy is an effective countermeasure. However, the poor compatibility with the hydrophilic G substrate often leads to the weak interfacial adhesion and poor durability of the hydrophobic coating. To overcome this obstacle, we used (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APS) as an interfacial bridging agent to prepare a highly hydrophobic, versatile G nanocomposite film. Specifically, tannic acid (TA)-modified nanohydroxyapatite (n-HA) particles (THA) were introduced in G matrix (G-THA) to improve the mechanical properties. Micro/nanostructure with low surface energy composed of nanozinc oxide (Nano-ZnO)/APS/stearic acid (SA) (NAS) was constructed on the surface of G-THA film (G-THA/NAS) through one-step spray treatment. Consequently, as-prepared G-THA/NAS film presented excellent mechanics (tensile strength: 7.6 MPa, elongation at break: 292.7%), water resistance ability (water contact angle: 150.4°), high UV-shielding (0% transmittance at 200 nm), degradability (100% degradation rate after buried in the natural soil for 15 days), antioxidant (78.8% of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity), and antimicrobial (inhibition zone against Escherichia coli: 15.0 mm and Staphylococcus aureus: 16.5 mm) properties. It should be emphasized that the bridging function of APS significantly improves the interfacial adhesion ability of the NAS coating with more than 95% remaining area after the cross-cut adhesion test. Meanwhile, the G-THA/NAS film could maintain stable and long-lasting hydrophobic surfaces against UV radiation, high temperature, and abrasion. Based on these multifunctional properties, the G-THA/NAS film was successfully applied as a liquid packaging material. To sum up, we provide a feasible and effective method to prepare high-performance green packaging films.

3D-Printed Filters for Efficient Heavy Metal Removal from Water Using PLA@CS/HAP Composites

Chitosan/Hydroxyapatite composites, enriched with relatively active -NH2 and -OH groups, have emerged as promising adsorbents for heavy metal removal. In this study, we harnessed the potential of CS/HAP composites by developing monolithic PLA@CS/HAP filters utilizing 3D printing and freeze-drying techniques. These filters possess both macroscopic and microscopic porous structures, endowing them with exceptional capabilities for removing heavy metals from water. The adsorption properties of CS/HAP composites were explored by varying the dosage, duration, and initial concentrations of copper ions. The maximum adsorption capacity for Cu2+ was determined to be approximately 119+/-1 mg/g at the natural pH and 298 K. Notably, the monolithic PLA@CS/HAP filters demonstrated remarkable efficiency in the removal of copper ions, with 90% of copper ions effectively removed within a mere 2-h period in a cyclic adsorption experiment. Furthermore, the PLA@CS/HAP filters exhibited a robust dynamic Cu2+ removal capacity (80.8% or even better in less than 35 min) in a dynamic adsorption experiment. Importantly, all materials employed in this study were environmentally friendly. In summary, the PLA@CS/HAP filter offers advantages such as ease of preparation, eco-friendliness, versatility, and broad applicability in diverse wastewater treatment scenarios, thereby presenting a significant potential for practical implementation.

Encapsulation of tea polyphenols into high amylose corn starch composite nanofibrous film for active antimicrobial packaging

Starch-based composite nanofibrous films loaded with tea polyphenols (TP) were successfully fabricated through electrospinning high amylose corn starch (HACS) with aid of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), referred as HACS/PVA@TP. With the addition of 15 % TP, HACS/PVA@TP nanofibrous films exhibited enhanced mechanical properties and water vapor barrier capability, and their hydrogen bonding interactions were further evidenced. TP was slowly released from the nanofibrous film and followed Fickian diffusion mechanism, which achieved the controlled sustained release of TP. Interesting, HACS/PVA@TP nanofibrous films effectively improved antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and prolonged the shelf life of strawberry. HACS/PVA@TP nanofibrous films showed superior antibacterial function by by destroying cell wall and cytomembrane, and degrading existing DNA fragments, stimulating excessive intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Our study demonstrated that the functional electrospun Starch-based nanofibrous films with enhanced mechanical properties and superior antimicrobial activities were potential for the application in active food packaging and relative areas.

An artificial bone filling material of poly l-lactic acid/collagen/nano-hydroxyapatite microspheres: Preparation and collagen regulation on the property

Artificial bone materials are in great need due to a lot of bone injuries. Herein, collagen/nano-hydroxyapatite (Col/nHA, C-H) composite nanospheres were obtained by in-situ mineralization, and poly L-lactic acid/collagen/nano-hydroxyapatite (PLLA/Col/nHA, P-C-H) was further prepared by high-speed shear emulsification method. The interfacial properties and structure between PLLA and nHA are regulated by the adhesive property of Col. The morphology, structure and properties of P-C-H microsphere were characterized in detail by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and simulated degradation of PBS in vitro. The results show that C-H is uniformly distributed in P-C-H microspheres, and a mesoporous material with a "pomegranate" structure and a particle size of 5-30 μm is self-assembled based on C-H multiple composite microspheres. It is beneficial to the sustained-release degradation of P-C-H and the retention/release of Ca²⁺. The 60-day PBS degradation shows that PLLA delays the degradation of nHA, making the degradation rate of P-C-H basically consist with the human bone healing cycle. The co-culture of P-C-H with MC3T3-E1 cells shows that P-C-H has high biocompatibility and no cytotoxicity. The cell viability is higher than 100 % in 72 h, indicating P-C-H has a proliferation effect on cell growth. Alkaline phosphatase and quantitative real-time PCR test show a positive promotion of P-C-H in cell proliferation and differentiation. The multi-layered P-C-H microspheres have an application potential in bone tissue engineering.

Chitosan/Xanthan/Hydroxyapatite-graphene oxide porous scaffold associated with mesenchymal stem cells for dentin-pulp complex regeneration

The aim of this paper was to synthesize and characterize polymeric scaffolds of Chitosan/Xanthan/Hydroxyapatite-Graphene Oxide nanocomposite associated with mesenchymal stem cells for regenerative dentistry application. The chitosan-xanthan gum (CX) complex was associated with Hydroxyapatite-Graphene Oxide (HA-GO) nanocomposite with different Graphene Oxides (GO) concentration (0.5 wt%; 1.0 wt%; 1.5 wt%). The scaffolds characterizations were performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle. The mechanical properties were assessed by compressive strength. The in vitro bioactivity and the in vitro cytotoxicity test (MTT test) were analyzed as well. The data was submitted to the Normality and Homogeneity tests. In vitro Indirect Cytotoxicity assay data was statistically analyzed by ANOVA two-way, followed by Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Compressive strength and contact angle data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey's test (α = 0.05). XRD showed the presence of Hydroxyapatite (HA) peaks in the structures CXHA, CXHAGO 0.5%,1.0% and 1.5%. FT-IR showed amino and carboxylic bands characteristic of CX. Raman spectroscopy analysis evidenced a high quality of the GO. In the TGA it was observed the mass loss associated with the CX degradation by depolymerization. SEM analysis showed pores in the scaffolds, in addition to HA incorporated and adhered to the polymer. Contact angle test showed that scaffolds have a hydrophilic characteristic, with the CX group the highest contact angle and CXHA the lowest (p < 0.05). 1.0 wt% GO significantly increased the compressive strength compared to other compositions. In the bioactivity test, the apatite crystals precipitation on the scaffold surface was observed. MTT test showed high cell viability in CXHAGO 1.0% and CXHAGO 1.5% scaffold. CXHAGO scaffolds are promising for regenerative dentistry application because they have morphological characteristics, mechanical and biological properties favorable for the regeneration process.

Magnetic biochar derived from macroalgal Sargassum hemiphyllum for highly efficient adsorption of Cu(II): Influencing factors and reusability

In this study, the brown algae Sargassum Hemiphyllum was used as a carbon source for synthesis of magnetic porous biochar via pyrolyzing at high temperature and and doping iron oxide particles (Fe-BAB). Cu (II) species were removed from aqueous solutions using Fe-BAB under various conditions. Fe-BAB demonstrated superior Cu (II) adsorption (105.3 mg g-1) compared to other biochars. On the surface of Fe-BAB, there are several oxygen-containing functional groups, such as -COOH and -OH, which are likely responsible for the excellent heavy metal removal performance. By utilizing magnet, the Fe-BAB can be conveniently separated from the solution and ready for further usage. Multi-adsorption mechanisms were responsible for Cu adsorption on Fe-BAB. Using the magnetic algal biochar for heavy metal removal is feasible due to its high adsorption efficiency and simplicity of separation.

Surface-Fabrication of Fluorescent Hydroxyapatite for Cancer Cell Imaging and Bio-Printing Applications

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) materials are widely applied as biomedical materials due to their stable performance, low cost, good biocompatibility and biodegradability. Here, a green, fast and efficient strategy was designed to construct a fluorescent nanosystem for cell imaging and drug delivery based on polyethyleneimine (PEI) and functionalized HAP via simple physical adsorption. First, HAP nanorods were functionalized with riboflavin sodium phosphate (HE) to provide them with fluorescence properties based on ligand-exchange process. Next, PEI was attached on the surface of HE-functionalized HAP (HAP-HE@PEI) via electrostatic attraction. The fluorescent HAP-HE@PEI nanosystem could be rapidly taken up by NIH-3T3 fibroblast cells and successfully applied to for cell imaging. Additionally, doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) containing HAP-HE@PEI with high loading capacity was prepared, and in-vitro release results show that the maximum release of DOX at pH 5.4 (31.83%) was significantly higher than that at pH 7.2 (9.90%), which can be used as a drug delivery tool for cancer therapy. Finally, HAP-HE@PEI as the 3D inkjet printing ink were printed with GelMA hydrogel, showing a great biocompatible property for 3D cell culture of RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Altogether, because of the enhanced affinity with the cell membrane of HAP-HE@PEI, this green, fast and efficient strategy may provide a prospective candidate for bio-imaging, drug delivery and bio-printing.

Advances of Hydroxyapatite Hybrid Organic Composite Used as Drug or Protein Carriers for Biomedical Applications: A Review

Hydroxyapatite (HA), especially in the form of HA nanoparticles (HANPs), has excellent bioactivity, biodegradability, and osteoconductivity and therefore has been widely used as a template or additives for drug delivery in clinical applications, such as dentistry and orthopedic repair. Due to the atomically anisotropic distribution on the preferred growth of HA crystals, especially the nanoscale rod-/whisker-like morphology, HA can generally be a good candidate for carrying a variety of substances. HA is biocompatible and suitable for medical applications, but most drugs carried by HANPs have an initial burst release. In the adsorption mechanism of HA as a carrier, specific surface area, pore size, and porosity are important factors that mainly affect the adsorption and release amounts. At present, many studies have developed HA as a drug carrier with targeted effect, porous structure, and high porosity. This review mainly discusses the influence of HA structures as a carrier on the adsorption and release of active molecules. It then focuses on the benefits and effects of different types of polymer-HA composites to re-examine the proteins/drugs carry and release behavior and related potential clinical applications. This literature survey can be divided into three main parts: 1. interaction and adsorption mechanism of HA and drugs; 2. advantages and application fields of HA/organic composites; 3. loading and drug release behavior of multifunctional HA composites in different environments. This work also presents the latest development and future prospects of HA as a drug carrier.

A review on adsorptive separation of toxic metals from aquatic system using biochar produced from agro-waste

Water is a basic and significant asset for living beings. Water assets are progressively diminishing due to huge populace development, industrial activities, urbanization and rural exercises. Few heavy metals include zinc, copper, lead, nickel, cadmium and so forth can easily transfer into the water system either direct or indirect activities of electroplating, mining, tannery, painting, fertilizer industries and so forth. The different treatment techniques have been utilized to eliminate the heavy metals from aquatic system, which includes coagulation/flocculation, precipitation, membrane filtration, oxidation, flotation, ion exchange, photo catalysis and adsorption. The adsorption technique is a better option than other techniques because it can eliminate heavy metals even at lower metal ions concentration, simplicity and better regeneration behavior. Agricultural wastes are low-cost biosorbent and typically containing cellulose have the ability to absorb a variety of contaminants. It is important to note that almost all agro wastes are no longer used in their original form but are instead processed in a variety of techniques to improve the adsorption capacity of the substance. The wide range of adsorption capacities for agro waste materials were observed and almost more than 99% removal of toxic pollutants from aquatic systems were achieved using modified agro-waste materials. The present review aims at the water pollution due to heavy metals, as well as various heavy metal removal treatment procedures. The primary objectives of this research is to include an overview of adsorption and various agriculture based adsorbents and its comparison in heavy metal removal.

Recent Progress in the Application of Hydroxyapatite for the Adsorption of Heavy Metals from Water Matrices

Wastewater treatment remains a critical issue globally, despite various technological advancements and breakthroughs. The study of different materials and technologies gained new valences in the last years, in order to obtain cheap and efficient processes, to obtain a cleaner environment for future generations. In this context, the present review paper presents the new achievements in the materials domain with highlights on apatitic materials used for decontamination of water loaded with heavy metals. The main goal of this review is to present the adsorptive removal of heavy metals using hydroxyapatite-based adsorbents, offering a general overview regarding the recent progress in this particular area. Developing the current review, an attempt has been made to give appropriate recognition to the most recent data regarding the synthesis methods and targeted pollutants, including important information regarding the synthesis methods and precursors, morphological characteristics of the adsorbent materials and effectiveness of processes.

A new cancellous bone material of silk fibroin/cellulose dual network composite aerogel reinforced by nano-hydroxyapatite filler

Composites materials comprised of biopolymeric aerogel matrices and inorganic nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) fillers have received considerable attention in bone engineering. Although with significant progress in aerogel-based biomaterials, the brittleness and low strengths limit the application. The improvements in toughness and mechanical strength of aerogel-based biomaterials are in great need. In this work, an alkali urea system was used to dissolve, regenerate and gelate cellulose and silk fibroin (SF) to prepare composite aerosol. A dual network structure was shaped in the composite aerosol materials interlaced by sheet-like SF and reticular cellulose wrapping n-HA on the surface. Through uniaxial compression, the density of the composite aerogel material was close to the one of natural bone, and mechanical strength and toughness were high. Our work indicates that the composite aerogel has the same mechanical strength range as cancellous bone when the ratio of cellulose, n-HA and SF being 8:1:1. In vitro cell culture showed HEK-293T cells cultured on composite aerogels had high ability of adhesion, proliferation and differentiation. Totally, the presented biodegradable composite aerogel has application potential in bone tissue engineering.

An overview of polyester/hydroxyapatite composites for bone tissue repairing

Objectives

The polyester/hydroxyapatite (polyester/HA) composites play an important role in bone tissue repairing, mostly because they mimic the composition and structure of naturally mineralized bone tissue. This review aimed to discuss commonly used geometries of polyester/HA composites, including microspheres, membranes, scaffolds and bulks, and their applications in bone tissue repairing and to discuss existed restrictions and developing trends of polyester/HA.

Methods

The current review was conducted by searching Web of Science, and Google Scholar for relevant studies published related with polyester/HA composites. Selected studies were analyzed with a focus on the fabrication techniques, properties (mechanical properties, biodegradable properties and biological properties) and applications of polyester/HA composites in bone repairing.

Results

A total of 111 articles were introduced to discuss the review. Different geometries of polyester/HA composites were discussed. In addition, properties and applications of polyester/HA composites were evaluated. The addition of HA into polyester can adjust the mechanical and biodegradability of composites. Besides, the addition of HA into polyester can improve its osteogenic abilities. The results showed that polyester/HA composites can ideal candidate for bone tissue repairing.

Conclusion

Polyester/HA composites have many remarkable properties, such as appropriate mechanical strength, biodegradability, favorable biological properties. Diverse geometries of polyester/HA composites have been used in bone repairing, drug delivery and implant fixation. Further work needs to be done to investigate existed restrictions, including the controlled degradation rate, controlled drug release performance, well-matched mechanical properties, and novel fabrication techniques.

The present review reveals the current state of the polyester/HA composites used in bone tissue repairing, contributing to future trends of polyester/HA composites in the forthcoming future.

Enhanced adsorptive composite foams for copper (II) removal utilising bio-renewable polyisoprene-functionalised carbon derived from coconut shell waste

A bio -renewable polyisoprene obtained from Hevea Brasiliensis was used to produce functionalised carbon composite foam as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions. Functionalised carbon materials (C-SO₃H, C-COOH, or C-NH₂) derived from coconut shell waste were prepared via a hydrothermal treatment. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that the functionalised carbon particles had spherical shapes with rough surfaces. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that the functional groups were successfully functionalised over the carbon surface. The foaming process allowed for the addition of carbon (up to seven parts per hundred of rubber) to the high ammonia natural rubber latex. The composite foams had open pore structures with good dispersion of the functionalised carbon. The foam performance on copper ion adsorption has been investigated with regard to their functional group and adsorption conditions.
