Abstract
Purpose Mental stress induced myocardial ischemia (MSIMI) is regarded as the primary cause of the angina with no obstructive coronary artery disease (ANOCA). Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is autonomously linked to obstructive coronary heart disease, hypertension, and sudden cardiac death. Similar to the impact of psychological stress on the cardiovascular system, individuals with OSA experience periodic nocturnal hypoxia, resulting in the activation of systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and sympathetic hyperactivity. The contribution of OSA to MSIMI in ANOCA patients is unclear. To explore the prevalence of OSA in ANOCA patients and the correlation between OSA and MSIMI, a prospective cohort of female ANOCA patients was recruited. Patients and Methods We recruited female patients aged 18 to 75 years old with ANOCA and evaluated MSIMI using positron emission tomography-computed tomography. Subsequently, Level III portable monitors was performed to compare the relationship between OSA and MSIMI. Results There is higher REI (7.8 vs 2.6, P=0.019), ODI (4.7 vs 9.2, P=0.028) and percentage of OSA (67.74% vs 33.33%, P=0.004) in MSIMI patients. The patients diagnosed with OSA demonstrated higher myocardial perfusion imaging scores (SSS: 1.5 vs 3, P = 0.005, SDS: 1 vs 3, P = 0.007). Adjusted covariates, the risk of developing MSIMI remained 3.6 times higher in OSA patients (β=1.226, OR = 3.408 (1.200-9.681), P = 0.021). Conclusion Patients with MSIMI exhibit a greater prevalence of OSA. Furthermore, the myocardial blood flow perfusion in patients with OSA is reduced during mental stress.

Abstract
There is still much uncertainty surrounding the approach to diagnosing and managing a sport-related concussion (SRC). Neurobiological recovery may extend beyond clinical recovery following SRC, highlighting the need for objective physiological parameters to guide diagnosis and management. With an increased understanding of the connection between the heart and the brain, the utility of assessing cardiovascular functioning following SRC has gained attention. As such, this review focuses on the assessment of cardiovascular parameters in the context of SRC. Although conflicting results have been reported, decreased heart rate variability, blood pressure variability, and systolic (ejection) time, in addition to increased spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity and magnitude of atrial contraction have been shown in acute SRC. We propose that these findings result from the neurometabolic cascade triggered by a concussion and represent alterations in myocardial calcium handling, autonomic dysfunction, and an exaggerated compensatory response that attempts to maintain homeostasis following a SRC. Assessment of the cardiovascular system has the potential to assist in diagnosing and managing SRC, contributing to a more comprehensive and multimodal assessment strategy.

Abstract
Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by a microdeletion of chromosome 7q11.23. Although the mortality rate of patients with WS is not very high, sudden cardiac death can occur, particularly in cases complicated by coronary artery stenosis. A 3-month-old female infant with supravalvular aortic stenosis and peripheral pulmonary stenosis was discovered unconscious in bed by her mother. She was immediately transferred to an emergency hospital but succumbed despite multiple attempts as resuscitation. DNA microarray analysis revealed microdeletions of 7q11.23 and 16p11.2, confirming WS and unexpectedly identifying 16p11.2 deletion syndrome which is known to be associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. Postmortem computed tomography revealed a severely enlarged heart, indicative of cardiac dysfunction. External examination revealed moderate-to-severe developmental delays in height and body weight. The heart, on internal examination, revealed whitish-discolored lesions; histologically severe fibrotic changes and thickening of the intima in the coronary arteries and aorta. In the brain, the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus appeared malformed. Taken together, these findings suggest that the cause of death was cardiac dysfunction due to WS. In addition, it could be possible that 16p11.2 deletion syndrome and dentate gyrus malformation contributed to her death. Future autopsy studies are warranted to clarify the precise role of microdeletion disorders in sudden death to reduce future preventable deaths in children.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The role of neuroimmune modulation and inflammation in cardiovascular disease has been historically underappreciated. Physiological connections between the heart and brain, termed the heart-brain axis (HBA), are bidirectional, occur through a complex network of autonomic nerves/hormones and cytokines, and play important roles in common disorders. RECENT FINDINGS At the molecular level, advances in the past two decades reveal complex crosstalk mediated by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, the renin-angiotensin aldosterone and hypothalamus-pituitary axes, microRNA, and cytokines. Afferent pathways amplify proinflammatory signals via the hypothalamus and brainstem to the periphery, promoting neurogenic inflammation. At the organ level, while stress-mediated cardiomyopathy is the prototypical disorder of the HBA, cardiac dysfunction can result from a myriad of neurologic insults including stroke and spinal injury. Atrial fibrillation is not necessarily a causative factor for cardioembolic stroke, but a manifestation of an abnormal atrial substrate, which can lead to the development of stroke independent of AF. Central and peripheral neurogenic proinflammatory factors have major roles in the HBA, manifesting as complex bi-directional relationships in common conditions such as stroke, arrhythmia, and cardiomyopathy.

Abstract
Objectives. There is no consensus regarding the efficacy of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) on firefighters' physiological and psychological stress responses. This study synthesized and quantified the psycho-physiological demands placed on firefighters wearing SCBA compared to a control group. Methods. Five databases were searched with English-language restrictions from inception to January 2021. As dependent variables, physiological (rectal temperature [Tre], mean skin temperature [T¯sk], heart rate [HR], maximal heart rate [HRmax], maximum oxygen uptake [VO2max], total sweat rate [TSR]) and psychological (rating of perceived exertion [RPE] and thermal sensation [TS]) responses were continuously collected. This study is registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021228363). Results. Nine eligible studies with 289 participants met the inclusion criteria. The pooled estimates for VO2max statistically significantly decreased, whereas T¯sk, HR, HRmax, TSR and RPE increased significantly. Additionally, the Tre and TS parameters were elevated but not significant. Subgroup analysis revealed that, except for VO2max and TSR, the SCBA weight did not differ significantly between groups on any outcome measure. Conclusions. Our meta-analysis indicates that wearing SCBA elicits thermoregulatory, metabolic and psychological stress. However, this is not primarily explained by the weight of SCBA, highlighting the value of ergonomic design and physiological monitoring.

Abstract
Introduction There is a growing interest in exploring brain-heart interactions. However, few studies have investigated the brain-heart interactions in healthy populations, especially in healthy young adults. The aim of this study was to explore the association between cardiovascular and spontaneous brain activities during dobutamine infusion in healthy young adults. Methods Forty-eight right-handed healthy participants (43 males and 5 females, range: 22-34 years) underwent vital signs monitoring, cognitive function assessment and brain MRI scans. Cardiovascular function was evaluated using blood pressure and heart rate, while two resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) methods-regional homogeneity (ReHo) and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF)-were used together to reflect the local neural activity of the brain. Logistic regression was used to model the association between brain and heart. Results Results showed that blood pressure and heart rate significantly increased after dobutamine infusion, and the performance in brain functional activity was the decrease in ReHo in the left gyrus rectus and in ALFF in the left frontal superior orbital. The results of logistic regression showed that the difference of diastolic blood pressure (DBP) had significant positive relationship with the degree of change of ReHo, while the difference of systolic blood pressure (SBP) had significant negative impact on the degree of change in ALFF. Discussion These findings suggest that the brain-heart interactions exist in healthy young adults under acute cardiovascular alterations, and more attention should be paid to blood pressure changes in young adults and assessment of frontal lobe function to provide them with more effective health protection management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiotoxicity is a commonly observed adverse effect seen in breast cancer (BC) patients undergoing chemotherapy with attributes toward cardiac autonomic dysfunction (CAD). Yoga, a mind-body system of medicine that has been shown to improve cardiac autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity in various health conditions, could be an effective adjuvant approach in addressing CAD. OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate the protective effects of Integrated Yoga Therapy (IYT) on ANS functioning, assessed using Heart rate variability (HRV) in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS A total of 68 (stage I-III) BC patients were randomly assigned into 2 groups: Treatment as Usual group (TAU) and TAU with Yoga Therapy group (TAUYT). All patients underwent anthracycline-based adjuvant chemotherapy for a total of 6 cycles with 21 days/cycle. During chemotherapy, the TAUYT group received IYT 5 days a week for 18 weeks, compared with usual care alone in the TAU group. Resting heart rate (RHR) and HRV, measured in both the time and frequency domains, were used to assess the cardiac ANS function of each patient before and after 6 cycles of chemotherapy. RESULTS A total of 30 subjects in the TAU group and 29 subjects in the TAUYT group were included in the analysis. At baseline (before chemotherapy), there were no significant differences between the TAU and TAUYT groups in terms of RHR and HRV indices. However, after chemotherapy, patients in the TAU group had a significantly higher average RHR (P < .02) and lower HRV indices with reduced parasympathetic indices: RMSSD (P < .01), pNN50% (P < .04), high-frequency power (P < .001) and increased sympathetic indices: low-frequency power (P < .001) with sympathovagal imbalance: LF/HF (P < .001) compared with patients in the TAUYT group. CONCLUSION The study showed the protective effects of yoga therapy on CAD in patients receiving anthracycline-based chemotherapy for BC, proposing yoga as a potential adjuvant intervention in improving cardiac health and preventing cardiovascular-related morbidities. TRIAL REGISTRATION This trial is registered with the Clinical Trials Registry-India (CTRI) database (CTRI/2020/10/028446; October 16, 2020).

Abstract
Purpose: To assess the stress-related physiological parameters of ophthalmic surgeons during complicated cataract surgery and compare them with uncomplicated routine cataract surgery. Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, 110 patients of various types of cataract were divided into two groups: Group 1 included 55 patients with simple cataract (Grade ≤3) with no ocular or systemic comorbidities, whereas Group 2 included 55 patients with complicated cataracts (Grade >3) and ocular/systemic comorbidities. All patients underwent phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation in the right eye only. The outcome measures were systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), and saturation of peripheral oxygen (SpO2). Results: The average SBP, DBP, MAP, and HR were significantly higher in the surgeon operating Group 2 (complicated cataract) compared with Group 1 (uncomplicated cataract; P < 0.05). The average SBP of the surgeon while operating Group 1 patients preoperatively and postoperatively was 125.42 ± 2.49 mmHg and 122.45 ± 2.10 mmHg, respectively, whereas in Group 2, the average SBP of the surgeon taken preoperatively and postoperatively was 145.98 ± 3.80 mmHg and 137.44 ± 3.45 mmHg, respectively (P < 0.05). The surgeon’s SpO2 showed no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: There is a significant level of increase in stress-related parameters of operating surgeons while doing complicated cataract surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to determine the association between aspects of hostility and coronary artery calcification (CAC) scores. Specifically, analyses differentiated between subtypes of hostility and their relation to CAC. METHODS A sample of 571 patients aged 45 or older with no history of cardiovascular disease completed assessments of demographic, psychosocial, and medical history, along with a radiological CAC determination. Logistic regression was used to determine the association between hostility and CAC. Hostility was measured using the Aggression Questionnaire, which measured total aggression and how aggression is manifested on four scales: Physical, Verbal, Anger, and Hostility Aggression. RESULTS Regression analyses indicated that only the physical aggression parameter was related to CAC: a 5% increase in odds of CAC presence was indicated for every point increase in physical aggression. The association remained significant in adjusted analyses. Other factors associated with CAC in adjusted analyses included: age, gender, race/ethnicity, BMI, and dyslipidemia. CONCLUSIONS Psychosocial factors, such as physical aggression, are emerging factors that need to be considered in cardiovascular risk stratification.

Abstract
Subclinical depression (dysphoria) is a common condition that may increase the risk of major depression and leads to impaired quality of life and severe comorbid somatic diseases. Despite its prevalence, specific biological markers are unknown; consequently, the identification of dysphoria currently relies exclusively on subjective clinical scores and structured interviews. Based on recent neurocardiology studies that link brain and cardiovascular disorders, it was hypothesized that multi-system biomarkers of brain-body interplay may effectively characterize dysphoria. Thus, an ad hoc computational technique was developed to quantify the functional bidirectional brain-heart interplay. Accordingly, 32-channel electroencephalographic and heart rate variability series were obtained from 24 young dysphoric adults and 36 healthy controls. All participants were females of a similar age, and results were obtained during a 5-min resting state. The experimental results suggest that a specific feature of dysphoria is linked to an augmented functional central-autonomic control to the heart, which originates from central, frontopolar, and occipital oscillations and acts through cardiovascular sympathovagal activity. These results enable further development of a large set of novel biomarkers for mood disorders based on comprehensive brain-body measurements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a well-known risk factor for recurrent cardiac events (RCEs) but findings are less consistent for anxiety, not previously reported on using a time-dependent approach. We aimed to study the prognostic effect of anxiety and depression symptom levels on RCEs. METHODS Data (N = 595) were drawn from the UPBEAT-UK heart disease patient cohort with 6-monthly follow-ups over 3 years. Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale symptoms were grouped into: agitation (three items), anxiety (four items), and depression (seven items) subscales. We performed two types of multivariate analyses using Cox proportional hazard models with delayed entry: with baseline variables (long-term analysis), and with variables measured 12-to-18 months prior to the event (short-term time-dependent analysis), as RCE risk factors. RESULTS In the baseline analysis, both anxiety and depression, but not agitation, were separate RCE risk factors, with a moderating effect when considered jointly. In the short-term time-dependent analysis, elevated scores on the anxiety subscale were associated with increased RCE risk even when adjusted for depression [hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) 1.22 (1.05-1.41), p = 0.009]. Depression was no longer a significant predictor when adjusted for anxiety [1.05 (0.87-1.27), p = 0.61]. For anxiety, individual items associated with RCEs differed between the two approaches: item 5 'worrying thoughts' was the most significant long-term risk factor [1.52 (1.21-1.91), p = 0.0004] whereas item 13 'feelings of panic' was the most significant time-dependent short-term risk factor [1.52 (1.18-1.95), p = 0.001]. CONCLUSIONS Anxiety is an important short-term preventable and potentially causal risk factor for RCEs, to be targeted in secondary cardiac disease prevention programmes.

Abstract
The current pharmacological strategies for the management of anxiety disorders and depression, serious conditions which are gaining greater prevalence worldwide, depend on only two therapeutic classes of mood-stabilizing drugs: Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs). Although first line agents with proven efficacy, their clinical success in the management of anxiety disorders and depression is still considered highly complex due to the multifaceted nature of such conditions. Several studies have shown a possible therapeutic target could be found in the form of the Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme [ACE] type 2 (ACE2), Angiotensin [Ang]-(1-7) and Mas receptor pathway of the Renin- Angiotensin System (RAS), which as will be discussed, has been described to exhibit promising therapeutic properties for the management of anxiety disorders and depression. In this article, the literature to describe recent findings related to the role of the RAS in anxiety and depression disorders was briefly revised. The literature used covers a time range from 1988 to 2019 and were acquired from the National Center for Biotechnology Information's (NCBI) PubMed search engine. The results demonstrated in this review are promising and encourage the development of new research for the treatment of anxiety and depression disorders focusing on the RAS. In conclusion, the ACE2/Ang-(1-7)/Mas pathway may exhibit anxiolytic and anti-depressive effects through many possible biochemical mechanisms both centrally and peripherally, and result in highly promising mental health benefits which justifies further investigation into this system as a possible new therapeutic target in the management of neuropsychiatric disorders, including any as of yet undescribed risk-benefit analysis compared to currently-implemented pharmacological strategies.

Abstract
Psychosocial stress increases cardiovascular risk, which coincides with enhanced oxidative DNA damage. Increased sympathetic tone-related catecholamine release causes oxidative stress, which contributes to catecholamine-related cardiotoxicity. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis whether acute psychosocial stress induces oxidative DNA damage, its degree being related to the cardiovascular risk profile and depending on the sympathetic stress response. After assessment of the prospective cardiovascular Münster score (PROCAM) to determine the risk of acute myocardial infarction, 83 male and 12 female healthy volunteers underwent the Trier social stress test for groups (TSST-G). Heart rate variability was quantified by measuring the standard deviation (SDNN) and root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) between normal-to-normal inter-beat intervals. Salivary α-amylase (sAA) activity was assessed as a surrogate for noradrenaline plasma concentrations. Oxidative DNA damage was determined using whole-blood single-cell gel electrophoresis ("tail moment" in the "comet assay"). A total of 33 subjects presented with a prospective risk of myocardial infarction (risk+) vs. 59 subjects without risk (risk-). The TSST-G stress significantly increased blood pressure, heart rate, and sAA in both groups, while oxidative DNA damage was only increased in the risk+ group. Immediately after the TSST-G, the "tail moment" showed significant inverse linear relations with both SDNN and RMSSD. Acute psychosocial stress may cause oxidative DNA damage, the degree of which is directly related to the individual cardiovascular risk profile and depends on the stress-induced increase in the sympathetic tone.

Abstract
Background Cardiovascular diseases are a public health concern worldwide, with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Depression is a frequent comorbidity in coronary heart disease (CHD). It can be caused by the experience of suffering from heart disease, but it can also influence the prognosis of the CHD. The prevalence of depression in patients with cardiovascular disease is twice as high as that in the general population. Aim Assess the influence of depression in the prognosis at 5 years in patients with CHD. Methods 145 patients diagnosed with CHD were recruited between September 2013 and June 2015. Depression was assessed based on the PHQ-9 results at the time of hospitalization and 3 months after discharged. Sociodemographic and clinical variables were collected. A 5-year follow-up was carried out to verify death, reinfarction or any adverse outcome. Results 20% of the study population had depression at hospital admission compared with 11% at 3 months. Depression at 3 months after discharged was a differentiating factor to present complications (42.6 months, CI 95% 27.3–57.9) compared with patients without depression (55 months, CI 95%, 50.9–59.1) (Log-Rank p = 0.034). In the unadjusted model, the risk of heart complications increased with patients that have comorbidities, such as diabetes (HR 2.78, 95% CI 1.21–6.3) or hypothyroidism (HR 2.5 95% CI 1.09–5.7). Also, patients with post-hospitalization depression at 3 months were 3 times (95% CI 1.023–8.8) more likely to have complications during the follow-up period than nondepressed patients. After risk factor adjustment, the HR for depression was 2.01 (95% CI 0.57–6.9). Findings Patients with depression at 3 months following the coronary event, presented complications sooner than those without depression.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effects and feasibility of a virtual screen-based stress management programme (V-DESSERTS) on inpatients with mental disorders. A single-blinded, pilot randomised controlled trial was conducted in a tertiary hospital in Singapore. Convenience sampling was used and participants were randomised into either the intervention group or the waitlisted control group (WL). The intervention group received individual-based, twice-daily sessions of the programme. Each session comprised education and virtual screen-based relaxation practice. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaires and physiological measures. The intervention group showed a significant increase in perceived relaxation and knowledge in comparison with the WL group. However, inconclusive results were observed on subjective and objective stress. The findings in this study indicated that the V-DESSERTS programme is feasible to be implemented for patients with schizophrenia, depression and bipolar disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The inferior frontal lobe is an important area of the brain involved in the stress response, and higher activation with acute mental stress may indicate a more severe stress reaction. However, it is unclear if activation of this region with stress correlates with angina in individuals with coronary artery disease. METHODS Individuals with stable coronary artery disease underwent acute mental stress testing using a series of standardized speech/arithmetic stressors in conjunction with high resolution positron emission tomography imaging of the brain. Blood flow to the inferior frontal lobe was evaluated as a ratio compared with whole brain flow for each scan. Angina was assessed with the Seattle Angina Questionnaire's angina frequency subscale at baseline and 2 years follow-up. RESULTS We analyzed 148 individuals with coronary artery disease (mean age [SD] 62 [8] years; 69% male, and 35.8% Black). For every doubling in the inferior frontal lobe activation, angina frequency was increased by 13.7 units at baseline ([Formula: see text], 13.7 [95% CI, 6.3-21.7]; P=0.008) and 11.6 units during follow-up ([Formula: see text], 11.6 [95% CI, 4.1-19.2]; P=0.01) in a model adjusted for baseline demographics. Mental stress-induced ischemia and activation of other brain pain processing regions (thalamus, insula, and amygdala) accounted for 40.0% and 13.1% of the total effect of inferior frontal lobe activation on angina severity, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Inferior frontal lobe activation with mental stress is independently associated with angina at baseline and during follow-up. Mental stress-induced ischemia and other pain processing brain regions may play a contributory role.

Inflammatory response in the central nervous system (CNS) is considered to be a potential mechanism underlying MI induced depression. Our former research demonstrated Ginkgo biloba extract played an important role in the repression of hippocampus inflammation in heart failure mice with depressive behaviors. This study was designed to investigate the effect of Ginkgolide B (GB) on MI-induced depression-like behaviors in post MI mice. After MI surgery induced by coronary ligation, MI mice behaved depressingly, detected by open field test (OFT) and the sucrose preference test (SPT), which was reserved by GB treatment. Meanwhile, the reduction of 5-HT and increase of interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) in median raphe nucleus and cortex indicated potential mechanisms underlying MI-induced depression-like behaviors, which were significantly reserved by GB treatment. Moreover, the consistent variation of IL-1β and phospho-STAT3 expression in brain tissues, indicated a role of STAT3 pathway in IL-1β production and anti-inflammatory effect of GB. In conclusion, GB has great benefits in effective treatment for depression post MI through reducing the levels of proinflammatory cytokines via STAT3 pathway, implicating potential effects in improving depression status in patients with MI.

Abstract
The brain is the most important organ of the human body, and the conversations between the brain and an apparatus can not only reveal a normally functioning or a dysfunctional brain but also can modulate the brain. Here, the apparatus may be a nonbiological instrument, such as a computer, and the consequent brain-computer interface is now a very popular research area with various applications. The apparatus may also be a biological organ or system, such as the gut and muscle, and their efficient conversations with the brain are vital for a healthy life. Are there any common bases that bind these different scenarios? Here, we propose a new comprehensive cross area: Bacomics, which comes from brain-apparatus conversations (BAC) + omics. We take Bacomics to cover at least three situations: (1) The brain is normal, but the conversation channel is disabled, as in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The task is to reconstruct or open up new channels to reactivate the brain function. (2) The brain is in disorder, such as in Parkinson's disease, and the work is to utilize existing or open up new channels to intervene, repair and modulate the brain by medications or stimulation. (3) Both the brain and channels are in order, and the goal is to enhance coordinated development between the brain and apparatus. In this paper, we elaborate the connotation of BAC into three aspects according to the information flow: the issue of output to the outside (BAC-1), the issue of input to the brain (BAC-2) and the issue of unity of brain and apparatus (BAC-3). More importantly, there are no less than five principles that may be taken as the cornerstones of Bacomics, such as feedforward and feedback control, brain plasticity, harmony, the unity of opposites and systems principles. Clearly, Bacomics integrates these seemingly disparate domains, but more importantly, opens a much wider door for the research and development of the brain, and the principles further provide the general framework in which to realize or optimize these various conversations.

Abstract
Brain and heart continuously interact through anatomical and biochemical connections. Although several brain regions are known to be involved in the autonomic control, the functional brain–heart interplay (BHI) during emotional processing is not fully characterized yet. To this aim, we investigate BHI during emotional elicitation in healthy subjects. The functional linear and nonlinear couplings are quantified using the maximum information coefficient calculated between time-varying electroencephalography (EEG) power spectra within the canonical bands (δ,θ,α,β and γ), and time-varying low-frequency and high-frequency powers from heartbeat dynamics. Experimental data were gathered from 30 healthy volunteers whose emotions were elicited through pleasant and unpleasant high-arousing videos. Results demonstrate that functional BHI increases during videos with respect to a resting state through EEG oscillations not including the γ band (>30 Hz). Functional linear coupling seems associated with a high-arousing positive elicitation, with preferred EEG oscillations in the θ band ([4,8) Hz) especially over the left-temporal and parietal cortices. Differential functional nonlinear coupling between emotional valence seems to mainly occur through EEG oscillations in the δ,θ,α bands and sympathovagal dynamics, as well as through δ,α,β oscillations and parasympathetic activity mainly over the right hemisphere. Functional BHI through δ and α oscillations over the prefrontal region seems primarily nonlinear. This study provides novel insights on synchronous heartbeat and cortical dynamics during emotional video elicitation, also suggesting that a nonlinear analysis is needed to fully characterize functional BHI.

Abstract
Previous studies have characterized the physiological interactions between central nervous system (brain) and peripheral cardiovascular system (heart) during affective elicitation in healthy subjects; however, questions related to the directionality of this functional interplay have been gaining less attention from the scientific community. Here, we explore brain-heart interactions during visual emotional elicitation in healthy subjects using measures of Granger causality (GC), a widely used descriptor of causal influences between two dynamical systems. The proposed approach inferences causality between instantaneous cardiovagal dynamics estimated from inhomogeneous point-process models of the heartbeat and high-density electroencephalogram (EEG) dynamics in 22 healthy subjects who underwent pleasant/unpleasant affective elicitation by watching pictures from the International Affective Picture System database. Particularly, we calculated the GC indexes between the EEG spectrogram in the canonical θ-, α-, β-, and γ-bands and both the instantaneous mean heart rate and its continuous parasympathetic modulations (i.e., the instantaneous HF power). Thus we looked for significant statistical differences among GC values estimated during the resting state, neutral elicitation, and pleasant/unpleasant arousing elicitation. As compared with resting state, coupling strength increases significantly in the left hemisphere during positive stimuli and in the right hemisphere during negative stimuli. Our results further reveal a correlation between emotional valence and lateralization of the dynamical information transfer going from brain-to-heart, mainly localized in the prefrontal, somatosensory, and posterior cortexes, and of the information transfer from heart-to-brain, mainly reflected into the fronto-parietal cortex oscillations in the γ-band (30 −45 Hz).

Abstract
AIM To investigate the association of resting heart rate (RHR) measured in late adolescence with the long term risk of myocardial infarction (MI), ischemic stroke (IS), heart failure (HF), atrial fibrillation (AF), cardiovascular- and all-cause death. METHODS AND RESULTS We followed a cohort of Swedish men enrolled for conscription in 1968-2005 (n = 1,008,485; mean age = 18.3 years) until December 2014. Outcomes were collected from the national inpatient - (IPR), outpatient - (OPR) and cause of death registries. Cox proportional hazard models were used to analyze the longitudinal association between RHR and outcomes while adjusting for potential confounders. While we found no independent association between RHR and risk of IS or MI when comparing the highest with the lowest quintile of the RHR distribution, but a positive association persisted between RHR and incident HF (Hazard ratio (HR) = 1.39 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.29-1.49]) after adjustment for body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure (BP). In similarly adjusted models, an inverse association was found for AF while there were weaker associations with death from cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all causes (adjusted HR = 1.12 [CI = 1.04-1.21] and 1.20 [CI = 1.17-1.24]). After further adjustment for cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), the associations persisted for HF (HR = 1.26 [1.17-1.35] for any diagnostic position and HR = 1.43 [1.28-1.60] for HF as a main diagnosis) and for all-cause death (HR 1.09 [1.05-1.12]) but not for CVD death. CONCLUSION Adolescent RHR is associated with future risk of HF and death, independently of BP, BMI and CRF, but not with CVD death, MI or IS, suggesting a causal pathway between elevated heart rate and myocardial dysfunction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Endothelial dysfunction is thought to be an early indicator of risk for cardiovascular disease and has been associated with both stress and depression in adults and adolescents. Less is known of these relationships in younger populations, where the origins of CVD is thought to manifest. This study examined the effects of questionnaire derived psychosocial stress and depressive symptoms on endothelial function among children, following them through to adolescence. METHOD Participants were 203 grade 2 children (111 girls; M age = 7.6 ± 0.3 years) from the LOOK longitudinal study, who were followed through to adolescence (16 years). Self-reported psychosocial stress and depression were assessed using the validated Children's Stress Questionnaire and a modified and validated version of the Children's Depression Inventory respectively; endothelial function was assessed using EndoPAT 2000 system at follow-up only; and adjustments were made for fitness, pubertal development and socioeconomic status. RESULTS Although all relationships occurred in the hypothesised direction, no cross-sectional or prospective evidence of early symptoms of psychological stress or depression being associated with endothelial dysfunction was found among our asymptomatic cohort of adolescents (all p > .05). CONCLUSIONS In contrast to previous findings in adolescents, our data provided little evidence of any relationship between current or previous psychosocial stress or depression and endothelial function in 16-year-old boys and girls. However, our data need to be interpreted alongside the potential limitations in the sensitivity associated with self-report methods for detecting psychological distress of children.

Abstract
PURPOSE Depression and reduced exercise capacity are risk factors for poor prognosis in patients with heart disease, but the relationship between the 2 is unclear. We assessed the relationship between depressive symptoms and exercise capacity in patients with heart disease. METHODS PubMed, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and ProQuest databases were browsed for English-language studies published from January 2000 to September 2013. Studies including adult patients with coronary artery disease, heart failure, congenital heart disease, and implantable cardioverter defibrillator, reporting correlation between a depression scale and exercise capacity ((Equation is included in full-text article.)O2peak, peak watts, estimated metabolic equivalents, and incremental shuttle walk test distance), as well as studies from which such a correlation could be calculated and provided by the authors, were included. Correlation coefficients (CCs) were converted to Fischer z values, and the analysis was performed using a random-effects model. Then, summary effects and 95% CIs were converted back to CCs. RESULTS Fifty-nine studies (25 733 participants) were included. Depressive symptoms were inversely correlated to exercise capacity (CC = -0.15; 95% CI, -0.17 to -0.12). Heterogeneity was significant (I = 64%; P < .001). There was no evidence of publication bias (Fail-safe N = 4681; Egger test: P = .06; Kendall test: P = .29). CONCLUSIONS Patients with heart disease and elevated depressive symptoms may tend to have reduced exercise capacity, and vice versa. This finding has clinical and prognostic implications. It also encourages research on the effects of improving depression on exercise capacity, and vice versa. The effects of potential moderators need to be explored.

Abstract
The heart can be viewed not just as muscle pump but also as an important checkpoint for a complex network of nervous, endocrine, and immune signals. The heart is able to process neurological signals independently from the brain and to crosstalk with the endocrine and immune systems. The heart communicates with the psyche through the neuro-endocrine-immune system in a highly integrated way, in order to maintain the homeostasis of the whole body with peculiarities specific to males and females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mental stress is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Meditation and music listening are two techniques that are able to counteract it through the activation of specific brain areas, eliciting the so-called Relaxing Response (RR). Epidemiological evidence reveals that the RR practice has a beneficial prognostic impact on patients after myocardial infarction. We aimed to study the possible molecular mechanisms of RR underlying these findings. METHODS We enrolled 30 consecutive patients after myocardial infarction and 10 healthy controls. 10 patients were taught to meditate, 10 to appreciate music and 10 did not carry out any intervention and served as controls. After training, and after 60 days of RR practice, we studied the individual variations, before and after the relaxation sessions, of the vital signs, the electrocardiographic and echocardiographic parameters along with coronary flow reserve (CFR) and the carotid's intima media thickness (IMT). Neuro-endocrine-immune (NEI) messengers and the expression of inflammatory genes (p53, Nuclear factor Kappa B (NfKB), and toll like receptor 4 (TLR4)) in circulating peripheral blood mononuclear cells were also all observed. RESULTS The RR results in a reduction of NEI molecules (p < 0.05) and oxidative stress (p < 0.001). The expression of the genes p53, NFkB and TLR4 is reduced after the RR and also at 60 days (p < 0.001). The CFR increases with the relaxation (p < 0.001) and the IMT regressed significantly (p < 0.001) after 6 months of RR practice. CONCLUSIONS The RR helps to advantageously modulate the expression of inflammatory genes through a cascade of NEI messengers improving, over time, microvascular function and the arteriosclerotic process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to investigate the association between antidepressant use and the risk of hospitalization for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). METHODS A case-crossover study was conducted using a nationwide population-based sample from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. A total of 18,631 patients with incident AMI were included in this study. The effects of antidepressant use as well as that of various classes (including tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants; selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors; or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors), doses, and receptor-binding profiles of the antidepressants on AMI were assessed. Conditional logistic regression models with adjustment for potential confounding factors were applied to determine the effects of antidepressant use on the risk of AMI during case and control time periods of 15, 30, and 60 days, respectively. The modifiable effects of age, gender, and comorbidity were evaluated by stratified analysis. RESULTS Antidepressant use was not associated with the risk of AMI (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.04; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.88-1.24). Likewise, neither the class, dose, nor the binding affinity of serotonin transporter or norepinephrine transporter was associated with AMI risks, and there was no modifying effect of age, gender, or comorbid medical condition on the association between antidepressant use and AMI. CONCLUSIONS Use of antidepressant drugs was not associated with the risk of AMI.

The acute physiological stress response to driving: A systematic review. PLoS One 2017; 12:e0185517. Abstract
BACKGROUND The experience of driving has been suggested to be detrimental to health. One hypothesis is that each exposure elicits an acute stress response, and that repeated exposures may act as a chronic stressor. OBJECTIVE The aim of this review is to evaluate and synthesise the evidence on whether driving elicits an acute physiological stress response. METHODS Electronic databases, including CINAHL, PsycINFO and Medline, were searched for original articles written in English from database inception until March 2016. The inclusion criteria of this review included a quantitative examination of an acute physiological stress response to driving, in either on-road or simulated settings, compared to a comparison or control condition. This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) reporting criteria. RESULTS A total of 27,295 abstracts were screened and 28 full-text manuscripts retrieved. Of these, seven articles met the inclusion criteria including four simulator studies and three on-road studies. All suggested a significant change in at least one physiological outcome, but the strongest evidence was for increases in urine catecholamine and cortisol after driving for long hours on-road; results on other outcomes are limited by the small number of studies or inconsistent findings. CONCLUSIONS Overall, these studies provided moderate evidence to suggest that driving for long hours elicits a stress response over an extended period of time. There is insufficient evidence that driving for a shorter period of time elicits an acute stress response, especially in real, on-road tasks. However, the limited number of studies, small sample sizes, heterogeneity in study objectives, methodologies and physiological outcomes limit conclusions. Future studies could be improved by recruiting a larger sample, utilizing modern stress markers such as heart rate variability, and primarily focusing on the acute physiological stress response to on-road driving.

Abstract
Patient with myocardial infarction (MI) are often affected by psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Psychological disorders are disabling and have a negative influence on recovery, reduce the quality of life and causes high mortality rate in MI patients. Despite tremendous advancement in technologies, screening scales, and treatment strategies, psychological sequelae of MI are currently understudied, underestimated, underdiagnosed, and undertreated. Depression is highly prevalent in MI patients followed by anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. Pathophysiological factors involved in psychopathologies observed in patients with MI are sympathetic over-activity, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis dysfunction, and inflammation. Numerous preclinical and clinical studies evidenced a positive association between MI and psychopathologies with a common molecular pathophysiology. This review provides an update on diagnostic feature, prevalence, pathophysiology, clinical outcomes, and management strategies of psychopathologies associated with MI. Moreover, preclinical research findings on molecular mechanisms involved in post-MI psychopathologies and future therapeutic strategies have been outlined in the review.

Abstract
AIMS Mental stress-induced myocardial ischemia (MSIMI) in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. We aim to assess hemodynamic, neuro-hormonal, endothelial, vasomotor and vascular predictors of MSIMI. METHODS AND RESULTS We subjected 660 patients with stable CAD to 99mTc sestamibi myocardial perfusion imaging at rest, with mental (speech task) and with conventional (exercise/pharmacological) stress. Endothelium-dependent flow-mediated dilation (FMD), microvascular reactivity [reactive hyperemia index (RHI)] and arterial stiffness [pulse wave velocity (PWV)] were measured at rest and 30-min after mental stress. The digital microvascular vasomotor response during mental stress was assessed using peripheral arterial tonometry (PAT). A total of 106(16.1%) patients had MSIMI. Mental stress was accompanied by significant increases in rate-pressure-product (heart rate x systolic blood pressure; RPP), epinephrine levels and PWV, and significant decreases in FMD and PAT ratio denoting microvascular constriction. In comparison to those with no MSIMI, patients with MSIMI had higher hemodynamic and digital vasoconstrictive responses (p<0.05 for both), but did not differ in epinephrine, endothelial or macrovascular responses. Only presence of ischemia during conventional stress (OR of 7.1, 95%CI of 4.2, 11.9), high hemodynamic response (OR for RPP response≥vs<ROC cutoff of 1.8, 95%CI of 1.1, 2.8), and high digital vasoconstriction (OR for PAT ratio<vs≥ROC cutoff of 2.1, 95%CI of 1.3, 3.3) were independent predictors of MSIMI. CONCLUSION Ischemia during conventional stress testing and hemodynamic and vasoconstrictive responses to mental stress can help predict subjects with CAD at greater risk of developing MSIMI.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a crucial role in various physiological and pathological processes mediated by β-adrenergic receptors (β-ARs) in cardiomyocytes. However, the sources and signaling pathways involved in ROS production induced by acute β-AR activation have not yet been fully defined. In primary neonatal mouse cardiomyocytes (NMCMs), the β-AR agonist isoproterenol (ISO) induced a rapid increase in mitochondrial ROS and total ROS production. Both the expression and activity of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase 2/4 (NOX 2/4) remained unchanged after 2 h of ISO treatment, suggesting that acute ISO stimulation mainly induces mitochondrial ROS production in NMCMs. Knockdown of β-arrestin1, but not β-arrestin2, inhibited ISO-induced mitochondrial ROS production within 1-2 h after ISO treatment. Moreover, forskolin, an adenylyl cyclase (AC) activator, rapidly increased mitochondrial ROS as early as 15 min after ISO treatment. Inhibition of the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)/protein kinase A (PKA) pathway abolished the mitochondrial ROS production within 15-60 min after ISO treatment. In conclusion, mitochondria are the major source of ROS production upon acute ISO stimulation. β-arrestin1, but not β-arrestin2, is involved in ISO-induced mitochondrial ROS production. Upon acute β-AR stimulation in NMCMs, the classical cAMP/PKA pathway is responsible for faster mitochondrial ROS production, whereas β-arrestin1 signaling is responsible for slower mitochondrial ROS production.

Abstract
Neurocardiology refers to the interplay between the nervous system and the cardiovascular system. Stress-related cardiomyopathy exemplifies the brain-heart connection and occurs in several conditions with acute brain injury that share oversympathetic activation. The brain's influences on the heart can include elevated cardiac markers, arrhythmias, repolarization abnormalities on electrocardiogram, myocardial necrosis, and autonomic dysfunction. The neurogenic stunned myocardium in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage represents one end of the spectrum, and is associated with an explosive rise in intracranial pressure that results in excess catecholamine state and possibly CBN. A brain-heart link is more known to cardiologists than neurologists. This chapter provides some insight into the pathophysiology of these pathologic neurocardiac states and their most appropriate management relevant to neurologists.

Abstract
Noninvasive hemodynamic measurements in rats require placing animals in restrainers. To minimize restraint stress-induced artifacts several habituation protocols have been proposed, however, the results are inconclusive. Here, we evaluated if a four-week habituation is superior to a shorter habituation, or no habituation. This is the first study comparing different habituation protocols with the use of four-week continuous telemetry measurements. We did the experiments on male, 16-week old, Sprague-Dawley rats. Continuous recordings of mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) and heart rate (HR) were made before and during habituation protocols. Rats were subjected either to control (four weeks of restraint-free recordings, n = 5) or two-week (seven restraints, n = 6) or four-week (14 restraints, n = 6) restraint sessions. The restraint protocols included placement of rats in the middle of the dark phase into plastic restrainers as used for tail-cuff measurements. Restraint lasted for 60 min, and was repeated every second day. Each restraint significantly increased MABP (by 15-25 mmHg) and HR (by 40-120 beats/min). Exposure to the restraint protocols decreased diurnal variation in MABP. There was no hemodynamic adaptation to repeated restraint, and no significant difference in hemodynamic response to restraint among controls, the two-week and the four-week groups. In conclusion, our study indicates that measurements in restrained rats are not likely being made without stress-induced changes in MABP. Moreover, in hemodynamic studies in repeatedly restrained rats longer habituation is not superior to shorter habituation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of concomitant hypertension and psychiatric disorders in the general population, using administrative healthcare data in Stockholm County. DESIGN AND METHOD The study population, included all living persons who resided in Stockholm County 1 January 2011 (N = 2 ,058 ,408). Individuals with a diagnosis of hypertension were identified with data from all consultations in primary care, specialized outpatient care, and inpatient care 2009-2013. As outcome, data were obtained on all consultations because of certain psychiatric diagnoses between 2011 and 2013, including specifically depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Age-adjusted odd ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated for men and women with and without hypertension, with individuals without hypertension as referents. RESULTS The age-adjusted ORs for depression in persons with hypertension were 1.293 (95% CI 1.256-1.331,) for men and 1.036 (95% CI 1.013-1.058) for women. The age-adjusted ORs for anxiety in persons with hypertension were 1.279 (95% CI 1.238-1.322) for men and 1.050 (95% CI 1.024-1.076) for women. The OR for bipolar disease were 0.904 (95% CI 0.826-0.990) for men and 0.709 (95% CI 0.656-0.767) for women. For schizophrenia, the ORs were 0.568 (95% CI 0.511-0.632) for men and 0.537 (95% CI 0.478-0.603) for women. CONCLUSION Increased awareness of the risk of depression and anxiety among hypertensive patients is needed to combat hypertension, its complications, and psychiatric suffering in the population. Hypertension is probably underdiagnosed and neglected in individuals with severe psychiatric disorders. We warrant efforts to integrate psychiatric and hypertensive care.

Abstract
The cardiovascular and nervous systems are deeply connected during development, health, and disease. Both systems affect and regulate the development of each other during embryogenesis and the early postnatal period. Specialized neural crest cells contribute to cardiac structures, and a number of growth factors released from the cardiac tissue (e.g., glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor, neurturin, nerve growth factor, Neurotrophin-3) ensure proper maturation of the incoming parasympathetic and sympathetic neurons. Physiologically, the cardiovascular and nervous systems operate in harmony to adapt to various physical and emotional conditions to maintain homeostasis through sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Moreover, neurocardiac regulation involves a neuroaxis consisting of cortex, amygdala, and other subcortical structures, which have the ability to modify lower-level neurons in the hierarchy. Given the interconnectivity of cardiac and neural systems, when one undergoes pathological changes, the other is affected to a certain extent. In addition, there are specific neurocardiac diseases that affect both systems simultaneously, such as Huntington disease, Lewy body diseases, Friedreich ataxia, congenital heart diseases, Danon disease, and Timothy syndrome. Over the last decade, in vitro modeling of neurocardiac diseases using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) has provided an invaluable opportunity to elevate our knowledge about the brain-heart connection, since previously primary cardiomyocytes and neurons had been extremely difficult to maintain long-term in vitro. Ultimately, the ability of iPSC technology to model abnormal functional phenotypes of human neurocardiac disorders, combined with the ease of therapeutic screening using this approach, will transform patient care through personalized medicine in the future. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stress-induced cardiomyopathy (SCM) after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) includes predominant apical or basal regional left ventricular dysfunction (RLVD) with concomitant changes in electrocardiogram or increase in cardiac enzymes. We hypothesized that difference in outcome is associated with the type of RLVD after SAH. METHODS We studied a single-center retrospective cohort of SAH patients hospitalized between 2000 and 2010 with follow-up until 2013. We classified patients who had an echocardiogram for clinically indicated reasons according to the predominate location of RLVD as classic SCM-apical form and variant SCM-basal form. A Cox proportional hazard model and logistic regression were used to estimate the risk for death and hospital complications associated with different RLVD after adjustment for propensity to undergo echocardiography given clinical characteristics on admission. RESULTS Among 715 SAH patients, 28% (200/715) had an echocardiogram for clinical evidence of cardiac dysfunction during hospitalization, the most common being acute left ventricular dysfunction, suspected acute ischemic event, changes in electrocardiogram and cardiac enzymes, and arrhythmia. SCM was present in 59 patients (8% of all cohort and 30% of patients with echocardiogram, respectively) with similar distribution of SCM-basal (25/59) and SCM-apical forms (34/59). SAH patients who had an echocardiogram for clinically indicated reasons had a significantly decreased risk-adjusted long-term survival compared with those without an echocardiogram, regardless of the presence of RLVD. SCM-basal form was associated with cardiac complications (odds ratio, 6.1; 99% confidence interval, 1.8-20.2) and severe sepsis (odds ratio, 5.3; 99% confidence interval, 1.6-17.2). CONCLUSIONS SAH patients with echocardiogram for a clinically indicated reason have a decreased long-term survival, regardless of the presence of RLVD. The association between severe sepsis and SCM-basal warrants future studies to determine their potential synergistic effect on left ventricular systolic dysfunction among SAH patients.

Abstract
Exposure to chronic stress or excess glucocorticoids is associated with the development of depression and heart disease, but the underlying mechanisms remain equivocal. While recent evidence has indicated that Neuregulin-1 (NRG1) and its ErbB receptors play an essential role in cardiac function, much is still unknown concerning the biological link between NRG1/ErbB pathway and the stress-induced comorbidity of depression and cardiac dysfunction. Therefore, we examined the protein expression of NRG1 and ErbB receptors in the myocardium of rats following chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) or rats treated with two different doses (0.2 and 2mg/kg/day, respectively) of dexamethasone (Dex). The stressed rats showed elevated expression of NRG1 and phosphorylated ErbB4 (pErbB4) in the myocardium, whereas ErbB2 and pErbB2 were inhibited. The lower dose of Dex enhanced myocardial NRG1/ErbB signaling, but as the dose is increased, while ErbB4 remained activated, the expression of ErbB2 and pErbB2 became compromised. Both CUMS and 2mg/kg of Dex suppressed the downstream Akt and ERK phosphorylation. Although the lower dose of Dex increased myocardial antiapoptotic Bcl-xl expression, a significant decrease of Bcl-xl expression was found in rats treated with the higher dose. Meanwhile, both CUMS and two different doses of Dex induced proapoptotic Bax level. Combined, our data firstly showed (mal)adaptive responses of NRG1/ErbB system in the stressed heart, indicating the potential involvement of NRG1/ErbB pathway in the stress-induced cardiac dysfunction.

Abstract
Stress and depression can affect an individual's level of physical activity and fitness, which may place them at risk of developing cardiovascular disease. This study investigates the longitudinal effects of stress and depression on physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness among youth. Six hundred and seventy-six children, initially aged 8 years, from the LOOK study completed a modified version of the Children's Depression Inventory, the Children's Stress Questionnaire, and objective physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness assessments on three occasions, every 4 years. Depressive symptoms had a direct effect (longitudinal) on the cardiorespiratory fitness of girls, with a similar trend for boys. In cross-sectional analyses, a child who identified with more symptoms of depression and stress was likely to be less fit and less physically active, which in girls extended to less moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Our findings, that both physical activity and fitness are impacted by depression and stress may contribute to strategies directed towards achieving enhanced physical activity and reductions in obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Efforts to improve the participation and performance of children with cerebral palsy (CP) are often related to the adaptation of environmental conditions to meet their cognitive and motor abilities. However, the influence of affective stimuli within the environment on emotion and performance, and their ability to improve or impede the children's participation has not been investigated in any systematic way although the emerging evidence suggests that it affects the individuals in many levels. OBJECTIVES (1) To measure autonomic responses to affective stimuli during a simulated Meal-Maker task in children with CP in comparison to children who are typically developing, and (2) to examine the interactions between autonomic functions, subjective reports of stress, and task performance among children with and without CP. METHODS Fifteen children with CP and 19 typically developing peers (6 to 12 years) participated. After completing behavioral questionnaires (e.g., State and Trait Anxiety Inventories), children prepared meals within a camera tracking virtual Meal-Maker environment. Either a negative, positive, or neutral visual stimulus was displayed, selected from the International Affective Picture System. Children also passively viewed the same pictures while rating their valence and arousal levels. Heart rate (HR) and skin conductance were recorded synchronously with stimulus onset. RESULTS Significant differences in autonomic functions were found between groups, i.e., a higher "low frequency" to "high frequency" (LF:HF) ratio in the children with CP during the meals associated with a negative stimulus (p=0.011). Only children with CP had significant positive correlations between trait anxiety and LF:HF ratio during virtual meal-making associated with positive (p=0.049) and negative stimuli (p=0.003) but not during neutral stimuli. For children with CP the amplitude of skin conductance response during passive picture viewing was significantly higher for negative than for positive stimuli (p=0.017) but there were no significant changes in autonomic responses during virtual Meal-Maker task. Significant correlations between trait anxiety, autonomic activity during the calm state and Meal-Maker performance outcomes were found only for children with CP. CONCLUSIONS In general, the Meal-Maker virtual environment was shown to be a feasible platform for the investigation of the effect of emotionally loaded stimuli on the balance of autonomic functions in children with and without CP. Anxiety level appears to play a significant role in children with CP and should be considered as a potentially important factor during clinical evaluation and intervention. Further studies are needed to develop additional measurements of emotional responses and to refine the types of affective interference.

Abstract
Nicotine, the main component of tobacco smoke, exerts influence on mood, and contributes to physical and psychological dependence. Taking into account frequent concomitance of nicotine abuse and stress, we aimed to research behavioral and biochemical effects associated with nicotine administration in combination with chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). Mice were submitted to the procedure of CUMS for 4 weeks, 2 h per day. Our results revealed that CUMS-exposed animals exhibited behavioral alteration like anxiety disorders in the elevated plus maze (EPM) test, the disturbances in memory in the passive avoidance (PA) test and depressive effects in the forced swim test (FST). Moreover, nicotine (0.05–0.5 mg/kg), after an acute or subchronic administration decreased stress-induced depression- and anxiety-like effect as well as memory deficit. Administration of metyrapone (50 mg/kg), a glucocorticosteroid antagonist, alleviated the depressive effect induced by the CUMS. The biochemical experiments showed decreased values of the total antioxidant status (TAS), activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) with simultaneously increased in malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration in mice submitted to the CUMS. The same effects were observed after an acute and subchronic nicotine administration within all examined brain structures (i.e., hippocampus, cortex, and cerebellum) and in the whole brain in non-stressed and stressed mice confirming pro-oxidative effect of nicotine. Our study contributes to the understanding of behavioral and biochemical mechanisms involved in stress-induced disorders such as depression, anxiety and memory disturbances as well as dual nicotine-stress interactions on the basis of the development of nicotine dependence.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a leading cause of death worldwide and identification and therapeutic modulation of all its risk factors is necessary to ensure a lower burden on the patient and on society. The physiological response to acute and chronic stress exposure has long been recognized as a potent modulator of immune, endocrine and metabolic pathways, however its direct implications for cardiovascular disease development, progression and as a therapeutic target are not completely understood. More and more attention is given to the bidirectional interaction between psychological and physical health in relation to cardiovascular disease. With atherosclerosis being a chronic disease starting already at an early age the contribution of adverse early life events in affecting adult health risk behavior, health status and disease development is receiving increased attention. In addition, experimental research into the biological pathways involved in stress-induced cardiovascular complications show important roles for metabolic and immunologic maladaptation, resulting in increased disease development and progression. Here we provide a concise overview of human and experimental animal data linking chronic and acute stress to CVD risk and increased progression of the underlying disease atherosclerosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the evidence for shared pathophysiological pathways in acute coronary syndrome and major depression and to conceptualise the dynamic interplay of biological systems and signalling pathways that link acute coronary syndrome and depression within a framework of neuro-visceral integration. METHODS Relevant articles were sourced via a search of published literature from MEDLINE, EMBASE and PubMed using a variety of search terms relating to biological connections between acute coronary syndrome and depression. Additional articles from bibliographies of retrieved papers were assessed and included where relevant. RESULTS Despite considerable research efforts, a clear understanding of the biological processes connecting acute coronary syndrome and depression has not been achieved. Shared abnormalities are evident across the immune, platelet/endothelial and autonomic/stress-response systems. From the available evidence, it seems unlikely that a single explanatory model could account for the complex interactions of biological pathways driving the pathophysiology of these disorders and their comorbidity. CONCLUSION A broader conceptual framework of mind-body or neuro-visceral integration that can incorporate the existence of several causative scenarios may be more useful in directing future research and treatment approaches for acute coronary syndrome-associated depression.

Abstract
Depression emerging in conjunction with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is thought to constitute a distinct high-risk phenotype with inflammatory determinants. This review critically examines the notion put forward in the literature that ACS-associated depression constitutes a meaningful subtype that is qualitatively different from depressive syndromes observed in psychiatric patients; and evaluates the salience of an analogy to the acute sickness response to infection or injury as an explanatory model. Specific features differentiating ACS-associated depression from other phenotypes are discussed, including differences in depression symptom profiles, timing of the depressive episode in relation to ACS, severity of the cardiac event, and associated immune activation. While an acute sickness response analogy offers a plausible conceptual framework, concrete evidence is lacking for inflammatory activity as the triggering mechanism. It is likely that ACS-associated depression encompasses several causative scenarios.

Abstract
Depression in the context of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is understood to confer increased morbidity and mortality risk. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying this association remain poorly understood, although several candidates including inflammation, cardiac autonomic dysregulation, and behavioural factors are viewed as of key importance. No single bio-behavioural explanatory model of ACS-associated depression has emerged, likely due the substantial heterogeneity across both conditions. We studied 344 patients with ACS; 45 fulfilled diagnostic (DSM-IV) criteria for a major depressive episode occurring within 1-month of ACS, and 13 had ongoing major depression that pre-dated ACS and continued through to 1 month post-ACS. We employed two statistical methods (multinomial logistic regression; and latent class analysis) and a range of immunological, autonomic and nutritional markers in an attempt to characterise a biological basis for ACS-associated depression. Regression modelling failed to accurately predict categorical group membership of ACS-associated depression. An alternative data-driven approach produced a three-class solution, with the derived classes differing on measure of C-reactive protein, vitamin D, omega-6:omega-3 ratio, heart rate variability, and age (all p⩽0.004). The majority of participants with ACS-associated and ongoing depression were members of the class characterised by the greatest biological disturbance. Patients with depression differed from those without depression on a range of psychological trait and state variables; additionally reporting poorer sleep quality, higher levels of social isolation, and functional impairment, but had similar biological profiles. Patients with ongoing depression generally had higher scores on these psychological/behavioural measures. Our novel analytic approach identified a combination of biomarkers suggestive of a role for immune, autonomic, and nutritional pathways in the manifestation of depression during ACS, in the context of additional psychosocial and behavioural vulnerabilities. Further studies are required to confirm the causal role of these factors in perpetuating depression and increasing risk of poor-health outcomes.

Abstract
Autonomic dysfunction represents a loss of normal autonomic control of the cardiovascular system associated with both sympathetic nervous system overdrive and reduced efficacy of the parasympathetic nervous system. Autonomic dysfunction is a strong predictor of future coronary heart disease, vascular disease, and sudden cardiac death. In the current review, we will discuss the clinical importance of autonomic dysfunction as a cardiovascular risk marker among breast cancer patients. We will review the effects of antineoplastic therapy on autonomic function, as well as discuss secondary exposures, such as psychological stress, sleep disturbances, weight gain/metabolic derangements, and loss of cardiorespiratory fitness, which may negatively impact autonomic function in breast cancer patients. Lastly, we review potential strategies to improve autonomic function in this population. The perspective can help guide new therapeutic interventions to promote longevity and cardiovascular health among breast cancer survivors.

Depression is more common in patients with cardiovascular disease than in the general population. Conversely, depression is a risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease. Comorbidity of these two pathologies worsens prognosis. Several mechanisms have been indicated in the link between cardiovascular disease and depression, including inflammation. Systemic inflammation can have long-lasting effects on the central nervous system, which could be associated with depression. NGAL is an inflammatory marker and elevated plasma levels are associated with both cardiovascular disease and depression. While patients with depression show elevated NGAL levels, in patients with comorbid heart failure, NGAL levels are significantly higher and associated with depression scores. Systemic inflammation evokes NGAL expression in the brain. This is considered a proinflammatory effect as it is involved in microglia activation and reactive astrocytosis. Animal studies support a direct link between NGAL and depression/anxiety associated behavior. In this review we focus on the role of NGAL in linking depression and cardiovascular disease.
