Short-term effects of ambient nitrogen dioxide on medical emergency calls for epileptic seizures: A time-series study

Short-term exposure to air pollution has previously been studied in relation to certain neurological disorders, but there is still a lack of convincing data linking air pollution to epileptic seizures. The study's goal was to investigate how exposure to ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO2) affected the number of patients seeking assistance at the Wuhan Emergency Medical Center due to epileptic seizures. We gathered data on medical emergency calls (MECs), daily ambient air pollution concentrations (SO2, NO2, PM2.5, PM10, CO, and O3), and meteorological variables in Wuhan, China, spanning from January 1, 2017, to November 30, 2019. To investigate the potential influence of ambient nitrogen dioxide on MECs for epileptic seizures, we carried out a time-series investigation using the general additive model (GAM). Additionally, analyses stratified by season, age, and gender were performed. A total of 8989 records of MECs for epileptic seizures were enrolled in our study during the period. Statistical analysis indicates that a rise of 10 μg/m3 in NO2 concentration is linked to a 0.17% increase in daily MECs for epileptic seizures (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.02%, 0.32%). Furthermore, people aged 14-59 years were more susceptible(2.25%, P < 0.05). The short-term effects of NO2 exposure on daily MECs for epileptic seizures were stronger in warm seasons than in cool seasons (0.55% vs. -0.10%, P < 0.0001). Our findings suggests that short-term exposure to ambient NO2 was positively correlated with daily MECs for epileptic seizures in Wuhan, China. Additionally, we observed that these associations were stronger in patients aged above 14 but under 60 years and the warmer seasons (from April to September).

The Short-Term Effects and Burden of Ambient Air Pollution on Hospitalization for Type 2 Diabetes: Time-Stratified Case-Crossover Evidence From Sichuan, China

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), a complicated metabolic disease, might be developed or exacerbated by air pollution, resulting in economic and health burden to patients. So far, limited studies have estimated associations between short-term exposure to air pollution and disease burden of T2DM in China. Hence, we aimed to estimate the associations and burden of ambient air pollutants (NO2, PM10, PM2.5, SO2, and CO) on hospital admissions (HAs) for T2DM using a time-stratified case-crossover design. Data on HAs for T2DM during 2017-2019 were collected from hospital electronic health records in nine cities in Sichuan Province using conditional poisson regression. Totally, 92,381 T2DM hospitalizations were recorded. There were significant short-term effects of NO2, PM10, PM2.5, SO2 and CO on HAs for T2DM. A 10 μg/m3 increment of NO2, PM10, PM2.5, SO2 and CO as linked with a 3.39% (95% CI: 2.26%, 4.54%), 0.33% (95% CI: 0.04%, 0.62%), 0.76% (95% CI: 0.35%, 1.16%), 12.68% (95% CI: 8.14%, 17.42%) and 79.00% (95% CI: 39.81%, 129.18%) increase in HAs for T2DM at lag 6. Stratified analyses modified by age, sex, and season showed old (≥65 years) and female patients linked with higher impacts. Using WHO's air quality guidelines of NO2, PM10, PM2.5, and CO as the reference, the attributable number of T2DM HAs exceeding these pollutants exposures were 786, 323, 793, and 2,127 during 2017-2019. Besides, the total medical costs of 25.83, 10.54, 30.74, and 67.78 million China Yuan were attributed to NO2, PM10, PM2.5, and CO. In conclusion, short-term exposures to air pollutants were associated with higher risks of HAs for T2DM.

Time Series Analysis of the Acute Effect of Atmospheric Fine Particulate Matter on Hospitalization for Heart Failure in Lanzhou, China

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between environmental PM 2.5 and heart failure (HF) hospitalization in Lanzhou, China.

METHOD

The correlation between atmospheric PM 2.5 and HF hospitalization was evaluated using a distributed lag nonlinear model.

RESULT

During the study period, 16,122 HF patients were hospitalized. The average concentration of PM 2.5 is 45.24 μg/m 3 . PM 2.5 was positively correlated with HF hospitalization with single lag (lag0) and cumulative lag (lag01, lag02, lag03). The maximum lag effect is estimated to occur in lag03, and with the PM 2.5 concentration increasing by 10 μg/m 3 , HF hospitalization risk increased by 1.023 (95% confidence interval, 1.006-1.039). The risk of hospitalization for HF in the male group, the age group 65 years or older, and the cold season was statistically significant and more positively correlated.

CONCLUSION

PM 2.5 exposure increases the risk of HF admission in Lanzhou.

A Narrative Review on the Impact of Air Pollution on Heart Failure Risk and Exacerbation

Air pollution is a risk factor for many cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure (HF). Although the links between air pollution and HF have been explored, the results are scattered and difficult to piece together into a cohesive story. Therefore, we undertook a narrative review of all aspects of the relationship between HF and air pollution exposure, including risks of developing HF when exposed to air pollution, the exacerbation of HF symptoms by air pollution exposure, and the increased susceptibility that individuals with HF have for air pollution-related health risks. We also examined the literature on environmental justice as well as air pollution interventions for HF. We found substantial evidence linking air pollution exposure to HF incidence. There were a limited number of studies that examined air pollution exposure in clearly defined populations with HF to explore exacerbation of HF or the susceptibility of individuals with HF to air pollution health risks. However, there is substantial evidence that HF-related hospitalisations are increased under air pollution exposure and that the air pollution associated increase in HF-related hospitalisations is greater than hospitalisations for other chronic diseases, supporting links between air pollution and both exacerbation of HF and susceptibility of individuals with HF. There is emerging evidence for interventions that can decrease air pollution health risks for individuals with HF, and more studies are needed, particularly randomised controlled trials. Thus, although the air pollution-related health risks for HF incidence and hospitalisations are clear, further studies specifically targeted at identified data gaps will greatly improve our knowledge of the susceptibility of individuals with HF and interventions to reduce risks.

Causality of particulate matter on cardiovascular diseases and cardiovascular biomarkers

Background

Previous observational studies have shown that the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is related to particulate matter (PM). However, given the methodological limitations of conventional observational research, it is difficult to identify causality conclusively. To explore the causality of PM on CVDs and cardiovascular biomarkers, we conducted a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.

Method

In this study, we obtained summary-level data for CVDs and cardiovascular biomarkers including atrial fibrillation (AF), heart failure (HF), myocardial infarction (MI), ischemic stroke (IS), stroke subtypes, body mass index (BMI), lipid traits, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, and blood pressure from several large genome-wide association studies (GWASs). Then we used two-sample MR to assess the causality of PM on CVDs and cardiovascular biomarkers, 16 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for PM2.5 and 6 SNPs for PM10 were obtained from UK Biobank participants. Inverse variance weighting (IVW) analyses under the fixed effects model were used as the main analytical method to calculate MR Estimates, followed by multiple sensitivity analyses to confirm the robustness of the results.

Results

Our study revealed increases in PM2.5 concentration were significantly related to a higher risk of MI (odds ratio (OR), 2.578; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.611-4.127; p = 7.920 × 10-5). Suggestive evidence was found between PM10 concentration and HF (OR, 2.015; 95% CI, 1.082-3.753; p = 0.027) and IS (OR, 2.279; 95% CI,1.099-4.723; p = 0.027). There was no evidence for an effect of PM concentration on other CVDs. Furthermore, PM2.5 concentration increases were significantly associated with increases in triglyceride (TG) (OR, 1.426; 95% CI, 1.133-1.795; p = 2.469 × 10-3) and decreases in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (OR, 0.779; 95% CI, 0.615-0.986; p = 0.038). The PM10 concentration increases were also closely related to the decreases in HDL-C (OR, 0.563; 95% CI, 0.366-0.865; p = 8.756 × 10-3). We observed no causal effect of PM on other cardiovascular biomarkers.

Conclusion

At the genetic level, our study suggested the causality of PM2.5 on MI, TG, as well HDL-C, and revealed the causality of PM10 on HF, IS, and HDL-C. Our findings indicated the need for continued improvements in air pollution abatement for CVDs prevention.

Effect of Air Pollution on Heart Failure: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

BACKGROUND

Heart failure (HF) poses a significant global disease burden. The current evidence on the impact of air pollution on HF remains inconsistent.

OBJECTIVES

We aimed to conduct a systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis to provide a more comprehensive and multiperspective assessment of the associations between short- and long-term air pollution exposure and HF from epidemiological evidences.

METHODS

Three databases were searched up to 31 August 2022 for studies investigating the association between air pollutants (PM 2.5 , PM 10 , NO 2 , SO 2 , CO, O 3 ) and HF hospitalization, incidence, or mortality. A random effects model was used to derive the risk estimations. Subgroup analysis was conducted by geographical location, age of participants, outcome, study design, covered area, the methods of exposure assessment, and the length of exposure window. Sensitivity analysis and adjustment for publication bias were performed to test the robustness of the results.

RESULTS

Of 100 studies covering 20 countries worldwide, 81 were for short-term and 19 were for long-term exposure. Almost all air pollutants were adversely associated with the risk of HF in both short- and long-term exposure studies. For short-term exposures, we found the risk of HF increased by 1.8% [relative risk ( RR ) = 1.018 , 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.011, 1.025] and 1.6% (RR = 1.016 , 95% CI: 1.011, 1.020) per 10 - μ g / m 3 increment of PM 2.5 and PM 10 , respectively. HF was also significantly associated with NO 2 , SO 2 , and CO, but not O 3 . Positive associations were stronger when exposure was considered over the previous 2 d (lag 0-1) rather than on the day of exposure only (lag 0). For long-term exposures, there were significant associations between several air pollutants and HF with RR (95% CI) of 1.748 (1.112, 2.747) per 10 - μ g / m 3 increment in PM 2.5 , 1.212 (1.010, 1.454) per 10 - μ g / m 3 increment in PM 10 , and 1.204 (1.069, 1.356) per 10 -ppb increment in NO 2 , respectively. The adverse associations of most pollutants with HF were greater in low- and middle-income countries than in high-income countries. Sensitivity analysis demonstrated the robustness of our results.

DISCUSSION

Available evidence highlighted adverse associations between air pollution and HF regardless of short- and long-term exposure. Air pollution is still a prevalent public health issue globally and sustained policies and actions are called for to reduce the burden of HF. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP11506.

Effect of short-term exposure to ambient air pollutants on non-accidental mortality in emergency department visits: a time-series study

Objectives

Exposure to air pollution has been linked to an increased risk of premature mortality. However, the acute effects of air pollution on the risk of non-accidental mortality have not been extensively researched in developing countries, and the findings thus far have been inconsistent. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the association between short-term exposure to six pollutants (PM_2.5, PM₁₀, SO₂, NO₂, O₃, and CO) and non-accidental mortality in Beijing, China.

Methods

Daily data on non-accidental deaths were gathered from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2018. Air pollution data for the same period were collected from 35 fixed-site air quality monitoring stations in Beijing. Generalized additive models (GAM) based on Poisson regression were used to investigate the association between non-accidental mortality in emergency department visits and the daily average levels of air pollutants.

Results

There were 8,676 non-accidental deaths recorded during 2017-2018. After sensitivity analysis, short-term exposure to air pollutants, particularly gaseous pollutants, was linked to non-accidental mortality. Specifically, for every 10 μg/m³ increase (5 μg/m³ in SO₂, 0.5 mg/m³ in CO) of SO₂ (lag 04), NO₂ (lag 04), O₃ (lag 05), and CO (lag 04), the relative risk (RR) values were 1.054 (95% CI: 1.009, 1.100), 1.038 (95% CI: 1.013, 1.063), 1.032 (95% CI: 1.011, 1.054), and 1.034 (95% CI: 1.004, 1.066), respectively. In terms of causes of death, short-term exposure to NO₂, SO₂, and O₃ increased the risk of circulatory mortality. Further stratified analysis revealed that the stronger associations were presented in females for O₃ while in males for CO. People aged 65 and over were strongly associated with ambient air pollution.

Conclusions

Our study showed that ambient air pollutants were associated with non-accidental mortality. Our findings suggested that efforts to control gaseous pollution should be stepped up, and vulnerable groups should be the focus of health protection education.

Short-term environmental nitrogen dioxide exposure and neurology clinic visits for headaches, a time-series study in Wuhan, China

BACKGROUND

Previous studies showed the adverse impacts of air pollution on headache attacks in developed countries. However, evidence is limited to the impact of exposure to air pollutants on headache attacks. In this study, we aimed to explore the impact of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) exposure on neurology clinic visits (NCVs) for headache onsets.

METHODS

Records of NCVs for headaches, concentrations of ambient NO₂, and meteorological variables were collected in Wuhan, China, from January 1st, 2017, to November 30th, 2019. A time-series study was conducted to investigate the short-term effects of NO₂ exposure on daily NCVs for headaches. Stratified analyses were also computed according to season, age, and sex, and the exposure-response (E-R) curve was then plotted.

RESULTS

A total of 11,436 records of NCVs for headaches were enrolled in our study during the period. A 10-μg/m³ increase of ambient NO₂ corresponded to a 3.64% elevation of daily NCVs for headaches (95%CI: 1.02%, 6.32%, P = 0.006). Moreover, females aged less than 50 years of age were more susceptible compared to males (4.10% vs. 2.97%, P = 0.007). The short-term effects of NO₂ exposure on daily NCVs for headaches were stronger in cool seasons than in warm seasons (6.31% vs. 0.79%, P = 0.0009).

CONCLUSION

Our findings highlight that short-term exposure to ambient NO₂ positively correlated with NCVs for headaches in Wuhan, China, and the adverse effects varied by season, age, and sex.

Temperature modifies the effects of air pollutants on respiratory diseases

Increasing studies have reported temperature modification effects on air pollutants-induced respiratory diseases. In the current study, daily data of respiratory emergency room visits (ERVs), meteorological factors, and concentrations of air pollutants were collected from 2013 to 2016 in Lanzhou, a northwest city in China. Daily average temperature was stratified into low (≤ 25 percentile, P₂₅), medium (25-75 percentile, P₂₅-P₇₅) and high (≥ 75 percentile, P₇₅) to explore how temperature modifies the effects of air pollutants (PM_2.5, PM₁₀, SO₂, and NO₂) on respiratory ERVs by using generalized additive Poisson regression model (GAM). Seasonal modification was also investigated. Results showed that (a) PM₁₀, PM_2.5, and NO₂ had the strongest effects on respiratory ERVs in low temperature; (b) males and 15-and-younger were more vulnerable in low temperature while females and those older than 46 years were highly affected in high temperature; (c) PM₁₀, PM_2.5, and NO₂ were mostly associated with the total and both males and females in winter, while SO₂ resulted in the highest risk for the total and males in autumn and females in spring. In conclusion, this study found significant temperature modification effects and seasonal differences on the risks of respiratory ERVs due to air pollutants in Lanzhou, China.

Short-term effects of ambient air pollution on emergency department visits for urolithiasis: A time-series study in Wuhan, China

Background

Previous studies have explored the correlation between short-term exposure to air pollution and urinary system diseases, but lack of evidence on the correlation between air pollution and urolithiasis.

Methods

Daily data of emergency department visits (EDVs), concentrations of six air pollutants (SO₂, NO₂, PM_2.5, PM₁₀, CO, and O₃) and meteorological variables were collected in Wuhan, China, from 2016 to 2018. And a time-series study was conducted to investigate short-term effects of air pollutants on urolithiasis EDVs. In addition, stratified analyses by season, age and gender were also conducted.

Results

A total of 7,483 urolithiasis EDVs were included during the study period. A 10-μg/m³ increase of SO₂, NO₂, PM_2.5, CO, PM₁₀, and O₃ corresponded to 15.02% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.69%, 30.11%), 1.96% (95% CI: 0.19%, 3.76%), 1.09% (95% CI:-0.24%, 2.43%), 0.14% (95% CI: 0.02%, 0.26%), 0.72% (95% CI: 0.02%, 1.43%), and 1.17% (95% CI: 0.40%, 1.94%) increases in daily urolithiasis EDVs. Significant positive correlations were observed between SO₂, NO₂, CO, and O₃ and urolithiasis EDVs. The correlations were mainly among females (especially PM_2.5 and CO) and younger people (especially SO₂, NO₂, and PM₁₀) but the effect of CO was more obvious in elders. Furthermore, the effects of SO₂ and CO were stronger in warm seasons, while the effects of NO₂ were stronger in cool seasons.

Conclusion

Our time-series study indicates that short-term exposure to air pollution (especially SO₂, NO₂, CO, and O₃) was positively correlated with EDVs for urolithiasis in Wuhan, China, and the effects varied by season, age and gender.

Association between short-term exposure to ambient air pollution and heart failure: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis of more than 7 million participants

Introduction

Exposure to air pollution has been linked to the mortality of heart failure. In this study, we sought to update the existing systematic review and meta-analysis, published in 2013, to further assess the association between air pollution and acute decompensated heart failure, including hospitalization and heart failure mortality.

Methods

PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, and OVID databases were systematically searched till April 2022. We enrolled the studies regarding air pollution exposure and heart failure and extracted the original data to combine and obtain an overall risk estimate for each pollutant.

Results

We analyzed 51 studies and 7,555,442 patients. Our results indicated that heart failure hospitalization or death was associated with increases in carbon monoxide (3.46% per 1 part per million; 95% CI 1.0233-1.046, P < 0.001), sulfur dioxide (2.20% per 10 parts per billion; 95% CI 1.0106-1.0335, P < 0.001), nitrogen dioxide (2.07% per 10 parts per billion; 95% CI 1.0106-1.0335, P < 0.001), and ozone (0.95% per 10 parts per billion; 95% CI 1.0024-1.0166, P < 0.001) concentrations. Increases in particulate matter concentration were related to heart failure hospitalization or death (PM_2.5 1.29% per 10 μg/m³, 95% CI 1.0093-1.0165, P < 0.001; PM₁₀ 1.30% per 10 μg/m³, 95% CI 1.0102-1.0157, P < 0.001).

Conclusion

The increase in the concentration of all pollutants, including gases (carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone) and particulate matter [(PM_2.5), (PM₁₀)], is positively correlated with hospitalization rates and mortality of heart failure.

Short-term effect of ambient air pollution on outpatient visits for children in Guangzhou, China

This study examined the short-term relationship between ambient air pollutants and children's outpatient visits, and identified the effect of modifications by season. Daily recordings of air pollutants (CO, NO₂, O₃, SO₂, PM₁₀, and PM_2.5) and children's outpatient visit data were collected in Guangzhou from 2015 to 2019. A generalized additive model adjusted for potential confounding was introduced to verify the association between ambient air pollution and outpatient visits for children. Subgroup analysis by season was performed to evaluate the potential effects. A total of 5,483,014 children's outpatient visits were recorded. The results showed that a 10 μg/m³ increase in CO, NO₂, O₃, SO₂, PM₁₀, and PM_2.5 corresponded with a 0.19% (95% CI: 0.15-0.24%), 2.46% (2.00-2.92%), 0.27% (0.07-0.46%), 7.16% (4.80-9.57%), 1.16% (0.83-1.49%), and 1.35% (0.88-1.82%) increase in children's outpatient visits on the lag0 of exposure, respectively. The relationships were stronger for O₃, PM₁₀, and PM_2.5 in the warm seasons, and for CO, NO₂, and SO₂ in the cool seasons. When adjusting for the co-pollutants, the effects of CO, NO₂, and PM₁₀ were robust. The results of this study indicate that six air pollutants might increase the risk of children's outpatient visits in Guangzhou, China, especially in the cool season.

Associations between long-term air pollution exposure and the incidence of cardiovascular diseases among American older adults

BACKGROUND & AIM

Numerous studies have linked air pollution with cardiovascular diseases. Fewer studies examined the associations at low concentration levels or assessed potential modifiers. Some investigations only examined hospitalizations, which can miss incident cases. This study aims to address these gaps through a nationwide cohort study of Medicare enrollees.

METHODS

Our study cohort comprise all Medicare enrollees (≥65 years old) continuously enrolled in the fee-for-service program and both Medicare part A and B across the contiguous U.S. from 2000 to 2016. We examined the associations of population-weighted ZIP code-level annual average PM_2.5, NO₂, and warm-season O₃ (May-October), with the first diagnoses of atrial fibrillation (AF), congestive heart failure (CHF), and stroke. We fit multi-pollutant Cox proportional hazards models adjusted for individual demographic characteristics and area-level covariates. We further examined these associations at low pollutant concentration levels and the potential effect modifications by race/ethnicity and comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia).

RESULTS

Elevated PM_2.5 and NO₂ levels were associated with increased incidence of AF, CHF, and stroke. For each 1 μg/m³ increase in annual PM_2.5, hazard ratios (HRs) were 1.0059 (95%CI: 1.0054-1.0064), 1.0260 (95%CI: 1.0256-1.0264), and 1.0279 (95%CI: 1.0274-1.0284), respectively. For each1 ppb increase in annual NO₂, HRs are 1.0057 (95%CI: 1.0056-1.0059), 1.0112 (95%CI: 1.0110-1.0113), and 1.0095 (95%CI: 1.0093-1.0096), respectively. For warm-season O₃, each 1 ppb increase was associated with increased incidence of CHF (HR=1.0035, 95%CI: 1.0033-1.0037) and stroke (HR=1.0026, 95%CI: 1.0023-1.0028). Larger magnitudes of HRs were observed when restricted to pollutants levels lower than NAAQS standards. Generally higher risks were observed for Black people and diabetics.

CONCLUSIONS

Long-term exposure to PM_2.5, NO₂, and warm-season O₃ were associated with increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases, even at low pollutant concentration levels. Black people and people with diabetes were found to be vulnerable populations.

Short-term effect of ambient ozone pollution on respiratory diseases in western China

Ambient air pollution has been regarded as an important cause of the morbidity and mortality of respiratory diseases. In the current work, a total of 469,490 respiratory emergency room (ER) visits in Lanzhou, China from Jan 1, 2013 to Dec 31, 2016 were collected. A generalized additive model (GAM) was used to investigate the association between O₃ and respiratory ER visits for the different gender and age subgroups. The results showed that: (a) with per inter-quartile range (IQR) (31 µg/m³) increase in O₃, the greatest relative risk (RR) of respiratory ER visits for the total was 1.014 (95% CI 1.008-1.020) at lag 4 days. Females and 16-to-45-year-olds were relatively more sensitive to O₃; (b) the significant lag effects were found in single-day lag models, with the highest RR values for different groups were observed at lag 3-lag 5 days. The multi-day cumulative lag effects were stronger for the total; (c) in the multiple-pollutant models, the effects of O₃ were generally increased when introducing other pollutants (PM₁₀, PM_2.5, SO₂ and NO₂) for adjustment. This study demonstrated that short-term exposure to O₃ increased the RR of respiratory ER visits in Lanzhou, China.

Explore the Relationship Between Short-Term Ambient Air Pollution Exposure and Daily Outpatient Visits for Metabolic Related Fatty Liver

Background

Many studies have shown that the pollution of fine particles in the air is related to the incidence of chronic diseases. However, research on air pollution and metabolism-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is limited.

Objective

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between short-term ambient air pollution and daily outpatient visits for metabolic-related fatty liver.

Methods

We used a quasi-Poisson regression generalized additive model to stratify analyses by season, age, and gender.

Results

From January 1, 2017, to August 31, 2019, 10,562 confirmed MAFLD outpatient visits were recorded. A 10 µg/m³ increase of fine particular matter (PM10and PM2.5) and NO₂ concentrations corresponding with percent change were 0.82 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.49–1.15), 0.57 (95% CI, 0.18–0.98), and 0.86 (95% CI, 0.59–1.13) elevation in MAFLD outpatient visits. In terms of season, the impact estimates of NO₂ and PM2.5% change were 3.55 (95% CI, 1.23–5.87) and 1.12 (95% CI, 0.78–1.46) in the hot season and transition season, respectively. Compared with the warm season, the impact estimates of PM10were more significant in the cool season: 2.88 (95% CI, 0.66–5.10). NO₂ has the greatest effect in the transition season, whereas PM10 has the greatest highest effect in the cool and hot seasons. Compared with other pollutants, PM2.5 has the greatest impact in the age stratification, which percent change are 2.69 (95% CI, 0.77–5.61) and 2.88 (95% CI, 0.37–6.40) respectively. The impact values of PM2.5 in male and female percent change were 3.60 (95% CI, 0.63–6.57) and 1.65 (95% CI, 1.05–2.25), respectively.

Conclusion

This study shows that the air pollutants are related to the number of outpatient visits for MAFLD. The effects of different air pollutants on MAFLD outpatient visits were different by season, ages, and gender.

Air pollution in Delhi, India: It’s status and association with respiratory diseases

The policymakers need research studies indicating the role of different pollutants with morbidity for polluted cities to install a strategic air quality management system. This study critically assessed the air pollution of Delhi for 2016–18 to found out the role of air pollutants in respiratory morbidity under the ICD-10, J00-J99. The critical assessment of Delhi air pollution was done using various approaches. The mean PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ concentrations during the measurement period exceeded both national and international standards by a wide margin. Time series charts indicated the interdependence of PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ and connection with hospital visits due to respiratory diseases. Violin plots showed that daily respiratory disease hospital visits increased during the winter and autumn seasons. The winter season was the worst from the city’s air pollution point of view, as revealed by frequency analyses. The single and multi-pollutant GAM models indicated that short-term exposure to PM₁₀ and SO₂ led to increased hospital visits due to respiratory diseases. Per 10 units increase in concentrations of PM₁₀ brought the highest increase in hospital visits of 0.21% (RR: 1.00, 95% CI: 1.001, 1.002) at lag0-6 days. This study found the robust effect of SO₂ persisted in Delhi from lag0 to lag4 days and lag01 to lag06 days for single and cumulative lag day effects, respectively. While every 10 μg m^-3 increase of SO₂ concentrations on the same day (lag0) led to 32.59% (RR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.61) rise of hospital visits, the cumulative concentration of lag0-1 led to 37.21% (RR: 1.37, 95% CI:1.11, 1.70) rise in hospital visits which further increased to even 83.33% (RR: 1.83, 95% CI:1.35, 2.49) rise at a lag0-6 cumulative concentration in Delhi. The role of SO₂ in inducing respiratory diseases is worrying as India is now the largest anthropogenic SO₂ emitter in the world.

Relationship between diurnal temperature range and emergency ambulance dispatches due to stroke in Guangzhou, China

BACKGROUND

The evidence between diurnal temperature range (DTR) and stroke remains controversial and sparse. We aimed to assess the relationship between DTR and emergency ambulance dispatches (EADs) due to stroke, and to explore whether there were effect modifications to the relationship.

METHODS

A Quasi-Poisson generalized linear regression combined with a distributed lag non-linear model was used to examine the relationship between DTR and EADs for stroke between January 1st 2011 and June 30th 2018 in Guangzhou, China. We estimated the effects of the low DTR and high DTR (defined as DTR below and above 10 °C respectively) on EADs. The effects of minimum, maximum, 5th, 25th, 50th, 75th, and 95th percentiles of DTR compared with the DTR of 10 °C were also analyzed.

RESULTS

A total of 20,275 EADs for stroke were included for analyses, among which 17,556 EADs were used in the model further adjusted for age and sex. A quasi-U-shaped relationship between DTR and EADs over lag0-2 days was observed. For the low DTR, per 1 °C decrease in DTR was significantly associated with an increase of 2.64% (RR = 1.03, 95% CI: 1.01-1.04) for EADs, while per 1 °C increase for the high DTR was non-significantly related with an increased risk of EADs (RR = 1.01, 95% CI: 0.90-1.13). Significant effects of the 5th and 25th percentiles of DTR on EADs were found when compared with the DTR of 10 °C. No significant effect modifications by age, sex or season were found to the association between DTR and EADs.

CONCLUSIONS

We found a quasi-U-shaped relationship between DTR and EADs due to stroke in this study, while age, sex or season did not significantly modify the association between DTR and EADs. More high-quality evidence is needed to further explore and validate the relationship between DTR and stroke.

Ambient gaseous pollutants and emergency ambulance calls for all-cause and cause-specific diseases in China: a multicity time-series study

Much attention has been paid to the health effects of ambient particulate matter pollution; the effects of gaseous air pollutants have not been well studied. Emergency ambulance calls (EACs) may provide a better indicator of the acute health effects than the widely used health indicators, such as mortality and hospital admission. We estimated the short-term associations between gaseous air pollutants [nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and ozone (O₃)] and EACs for all-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases in seven Chinese cities from 2014 to 2019. We used generalized additive models and random-effects meta-analysis to examine the city-specific and pooled associations. Stratified analyses were conducted by age, sex, and season. A total of 1,626,017 EACs were observed for all-cause EACs, including 230,537 from cardiovascular diseases, and 96,483 from respiratory diseases. Statistically significant associations were observed between NO₂ and EACs for all-cause diseases, while the effects of SO₂ were positive, but not statistically significant in most models. No significant relationship was found between O₃ and EACs. Specifically, each 10 μg/m³ increase in the 2-day moving average concentration of NO₂ was associated with a 1.07% [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.40%, 1.76%], 0.76% (95% CI: 0.19%, 1.34%) and 0.06% (95% CI: -1.57%, 1.73%) increase in EACs due to all-cause, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, respectively. Stratified analysis showed a larger effect of NO₂ on all-cause EACs in the cold season [excess relative risk (ERR): 0.33% (95% CI: 0.05%, 0.60%) for warm season, ERR: 0.77% (95% CI: 0.31%, 1.23%) for cold season]. Our study indicates that acute exposures to NO₂ might be an important trigger of the emergent occurrence of all-cause, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and this effect should be of particular concern in the cold season. Further policy development for controlling gaseous air pollution is warranted to reduce the emergent occurrence of cardiopulmonary diseases.

Variations in airborne pollen and spores in urban Guangzhou and their relationships with meteorological variables

Airborne pollen causes various types of allergies in humans, and the extent of allergic infection is related to the presence of different types of sporo-pollen and existing meteorological conditions in a certain area. Therefore, an aeropalynological study of 72 airborne samples with a hydrofluoric acid (HF) treatment was conducted in the Haizhu district of Guangzhou, China, in 2016, to identify the temporal variations in airborne sporo-pollen and the relationship between airborne sporo-pollen concentrations and different meteorological variables in Guangzhou, China. Forty-five types of airborne pollen, seven types of airborne spores, and some undetermined sporo-pollen taxa were identified with two separate plant habitats occurring during this period (from January to December 2016): arboreal pollen (tree-based) and non-arboreal pollen (herb, shrub, aquatic, liane, etc.). Furthermore, the daily records of four key meteorological variables (temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, and wind speed) were acquired to distinguish the pollen seasons and correlated with Spearman's rho test to establish a pollen-weather data book with the seasonal variations. The two leading seasons were identified based on pollen abundance: spring and autumn. Among them, the primary dominant sporo-pollen families during the spring season were Poaceae, Pinaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Moraceae, Microlepia sp., and Polypodiaceae. Conversely, Artemisia sp., Asteraceae, Cyperaceae, Poaceae, Alnus sp., Corylus sp., Myrtaceae, and Rosaceae were the dominant pollen species during autumn. However, few pollen grains were identified in January, May-July, and December. The statistical analysis revealed that temperature had both positive and negative correlations with sporo-pollen concentrations. However, precipitation and relative humidity had a strong impact on the sporo-pollen dispersion and exhibited a negative correlation with the sporo-pollen concentrations. The wind speed had a positive but strong correlation with the sporo-pollen concentration during the study period. Some inconsistent results were found due to environmental variations, vegetation type, and climate change around the study area. This study will facilitate the identification of pollen seasons to prevent the occurrence of pollen-related allergies in the Guangzhou city area.

Different sized particles associated with all-cause and cause-specific emergency ambulance calls: A multicity time-series analysis in China

BACKGROUND

Compared with mortality and hospital admission, emergency ambulance calls (EACs) could be a more accurate outcome indicator to reflect the health effects of short-term air pollution exposure. However, such studies have been scarce, especially on a multicity scale in China.

METHODS

We estimated the associations of different diameter particles [i.e., inhalable particulate matter (PM₁₀), coarse particulate matter (PM_c), and fine particulate matter (PM_2.5)] with EACs for all-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases in seven Chinese cities. We collected data on EACs and air pollution from 2014 to 2019. We used generalized additive models and random-effects meta-analysis to examine the city-specific and overall associations. Stratified analyses were conducted to examine the effect modifications of gender, age, and season.

RESULTS

Significant associations of PM₁₀ and PM_2.5 with EACs were observed, while the PM_c associations were positive but not statistically significant in most analyses. Specifically, each 10 μg/m³ increase in 2-day moving average concentration of PM₁₀ was associated with a 0.25% [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.04%, 0.47%] increase in all-cause EACs, 0.13% (95% CI: -0.01%, 0.26%) in cardiovascular EACs, and 0.35% (95% CI: 0.04%, 0.66%) in respiratory EACs. The corresponding increases in daily EACs for PM_2.5 were 0.30% (95% CI, 0.03%, 0.57%), 0.13% (95% CI, -0.07%, 0.33%), and 0.46% (95% CI, 0.01%, 0.92%). Season of the year also modifies the association between particulate matter pollution and EACs.

CONCLUSIONS

Short-term exposure to PM₁₀ and PM_2.5 were positively associated with daily all-cause and respiratory-related EACs. The associations were stronger during warm season than cold season. Our findings suggest that the most harmful fraction of particulate matter pollution is PM_2.5, which has important implications for current air quality guidelines and regulations in China.

Relationship between different air pollutants and total and cause-specific emergency ambulance dispatches in Shanghai, China

OBJECTIVE

Air pollutants play a crucial role in human health and disease. Emergency ambulance dispatch data have excellent potential for public and environmental health research. This study aimed at investigating the impact of short-term exposure to air pollutants on the emergency ambulance dispatches.

METHODS

We used data on emergency ambulance dispatches in Shanghai Municipality, China, from April 1, 2016 to December 31, 2017. The association of the daily emergency ambulance dispatches with air pollutants including PM_2.5 (particles ≤ 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter), PM₁₀, O₃, NO₂ and SO₂ was analyzed with the use of time-series analyses.

RESULTS

A total of 310,825 emergency ambulance dispatches for acute illness occurred in Shanghai during the study period. An increase in PM_2.5 by 10 μg/m³ at lag1 and lag2 was shown to increase the risk of emergency ambulance dispatches (RR for lag1 = 1.05, 95% CI 1.00-1.11, RR for lag2 = 1.07, 95% CI 1.01-1.12). PM₁₀, NO₂, and SO₂ also showed significant associations with emergency ambulance dispatches in single-pollutant models. Cause-specific analyses showed an elevation in PM_2.5 by 10 μg/m³ was associated with an increased risk of emergency ambulance dispatches related to respiratory diseases on the current day (lag0, RR 1.17, 95% CI 1.01-1.33), while the impact on emergency ambulance dispatches related to other diseases presented 1-3 days later. The other pollutants have the similar trend.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings show a strong relationship between ambient air pollutants and emergency ambulance dispatches. Our study contributes to the growing body of evidence describing the adverse health effects of ambient air pollution and will benefit ambulance services for early warning and effective ambulatory planning.

Short-term exposure to air pollution and hospital admission for heart failure among older adults in metropolitan cities: a time-series study

PURPOSE

We aimed to investigate the association between air pollution concentration levels and hospital admissions for heart failure (HF) among older adults in metropolitan cities in South Korea.

METHODS

We used hospital admission data of 1.8 million older adults in seven metropolitan cities from 2008 to 2016, derived from the National Health Insurance Service of South Korea. Daily HF admission data were linked to air pollutants concentrations for the respective dates, including particulate matter less than 2.5 μm in size (PM_2.5), 10 μm (PM₁₀), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone. We estimated the association between air pollutants and daily HF admissions using quasi-Poisson generalized additive models for each city.

RESULTS

During the study period, 142,490 hospital admissions for HF were noted. Increases of 10 μg/m³ of PM_2.5 and PM₁₀, and 10 ppb of SO₂, NO₂, and CO were associated with an increased risk of HF admission by 0.93% ([95% confidence intervals 0.51-1.36], 0.55% [0.31-0.80], 6.04% [2.15-10.08], 1.10% [0.38-1.82], and 0.05% [0.01-0.09]), respectively, on the same day. Increases in mean exposure to PM_2.5, PM₁₀, and SO₂ for 8 days from the concurrent day were also significantly associated with HF admissions. During the warm season, the risk of HF admissions increased shortly after an increase in PM_2.5, whereas prolonged effects were observed during the cold season.

CONCLUSION

Our study suggests the adverse effects of air pollution on HF. Moreover, the evidence of seasonality may help tailor protection guidelines for older adults.

Association between fine particulate matter and heart failure hospitalizations: a time-series analysis in Yancheng, China

BACKGROUND

Heart failure (HF) is a global public health problem of increasing importance. The association between acute exposure to air pollution and HF has been well established in developed countries, but little evidence is available in developing countries where air pollution levels are much higher.

OBJECTIVES

To explore the associations between PM_2.5 and HF hospitalizations in Yancheng, China.

METHODS

In this time-series study, daily HF hospitalizations admitted in three major hospitals in Yancheng from May 1, 2015 to Apr 30, 2020 were collected. We used a generalized additive model with quasi-Poisson regression to investigate the association between PM_2.5 and HF hospitalizations. The robustness of the associations was tested using two-pollutant models, and we examined the potential effect modification by age, gender, and season via stratification analyses. Lastly, we pooled the concentration-response curves.

RESULTS

A total of 10,466 HF hospitalizations were recorded, with a daily average of 6 cases. We observed the most robust estimates on lag 0 day, and the associated increment in HF was 1.28% (95% CI 0.45%, 2.11%) for a 10-μg/m³ increase of PM_2.5. The association remained after adjustment of O₃, but not for NO₂, CO, and SO₂. The PM_2.5-HF associations were positive in females, patients aged ≥ 65 years, and in cold season. The C-R relationship curve was generally increasing below 30 μg/m³.

CONCLUSION

This study provided evidence on the association of PM_2.5 with acute exacerbation of chronic heart failure, which may benefit future prevention strategy and policymaking.

Air Pollution Increases the Incidence of Upper Respiratory Tract Symptoms among Polish Children

A substantial proportion of airway disease’s global burden is attributable to exposure to air pollution. This study aimed to investigate the association between air pollution, assessed as concentrations of particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10 on the upper respiratory tract symptoms (URTS) in children. A nation-wide, questionnaire-based study was conducted in Poland in winter 2018/2019 in a population of 1475 children, comparing URTS throughout the study period with publicly available data on airborne particulate matter. A general regression model was used to evaluate the lag effects between daily changes in PM10 and PM2.5 and the number of children reporting URTS and their severity. PM10 and PM2.5 in the single-pollutant models had significant effects on the number of children reporting URTS. The prevalence of URTS: “runny nose”, “sneezing” and “cough” was positively associated with 12-week mean PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations. In the locations with the highest average concentration of PM, the symptoms of runny nose, cough and sneezing were increased by 10%, 9% and 11%, respectively, compared to the cities with the lowest PM concentrations. This study showed that moderate-term exposure (12 week observation period) to air pollution was associated with an increased risk of URTS among children aged 3–12 years in Poland. These findings may influence public debate and future policy at the national and international levels to improve air quality in cities and improve children’s health.

Association between short-term ambient air pollution exposure and depression outpatient visits in cold seasons: a time-series analysis in northwestern China

Depression is known to be one of the most common mental disorders raising global concerns. However, evidence regarding the association between short-term air pollution exposure and risk of development of depression is limited. The aim of this was to assess the relationship between short-term ambient air pollution exposure and depression in outpatient visits in Xi'an, a northwestern Chinese metropolis. Data for air pollutants including particulate matter (PM₁₀), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) levels from October 1, 2010 to December 31, 2013 and number of daily depression outpatient visits (92,387 in total) were collected. A time-series quasi-Poisson regression model was adopted to determine the association between short-term air pollutant concentrations and frequency of outpatient visits for depression with different lag models. Consequently, 10 μg/m³ increase of SO₂ and NO₂ levels corresponded to significant elevation in number of outpatient-visits for depression on concurrent days (lag 0), and this relationship appeared stronger in cool seasons (October to March). However, the association of PM₁₀ was only significant in males aged 30-50 at lag 0. Evidence indicated that short-term exposure to ambient air pollutants especially in cool seasons might be associated with increased risk of outpatient visits for depression.

Improvement in life expectancy for ischemic heart diseases by achieving daily ambient PM2.5 standards in China

BACKGROUND

The potential impacts of daily ambient fine particulate pollution (PM_2.5) exposure on year of life lost (YLL) due to ischemic heart diseases (IHD) remain uncertain. We aimed to estimate the improvement in IHD-related life expectancy by attaining the daily air quality standards of ambient PM_2.5 in China.

METHODS AND RESULTS

This study was based on daily mortality data covering 96 Chinese cities from 2013 to 2016. Regional- and national-associations between IHD-related YLLs and daily PM_2.5 were estimated by generalized additive models. We further evaluated the IHD-related avoidable YLLs with an assumption that the daily PM_2.5 was below the ambient air quality standards of World Health Organization (WHO) and China, and calculated the improvement of life expectancy by dividing the avoidable YLLs by the overall number of IHD mortality. We totally recorded 1,485,140 IHD deaths from 2013 to 2016. At the national level, we found a positive association between IHD-related YLLs and daily PM_2.5. Per 10 μg/m³ increment of four-day averaged ambient PM_2.5 related to an increase of 0.40 IHD-related YLLs (95% CI: 0.28, 0.51). By achieving the WHO's air quality guideline, we estimated that an averaged number of 1346.94 (95% CI: 932.61, 1761.27) YLLs can be avoided for the IHD deaths in each city. On average, the life expectancy can be improved by 0.15 years (95% CI: 0.11, 0.19) for each death.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study provides a nationwide picture of the life expectancy improvements by reaching the daily PM_2.5 standards in China, indicating that people can live longer in an environment with higher air quality.

Elevated environmental PM2.5 increases risk of schizophrenia relapse: Mediation of inflammatory cytokines

BACKGROUND

Ecological epidemiology suggests that hospital admissions for schizophrenia are associated with an increased environmental PM_2.5, but no prospective study has verified this result, and the physiological mechanism is not clear.

METHODS

We used a repeated-measures design to prospectively assess the association of environmental PM_2.5 and the risk of relapse in schizophrenia, and used two linear mixed-effects models to explore possible mediating effects of immune cytokines on the premise of controlling confounders.

RESULTS

We import the data using EpiData software, and collate and analyze of the data using R software. The increase of PM_2.5 at lag0 had the greatest impact on the relapse of schizophrenia (for each 10 μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5, the relapse risk score increased by 1.504, that is to say, odds ratio (OR) = 4.500 (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.849-7.106，P < 0.001)), and cumulative effects lasted for four days with the maximum at the second day (for each 10 μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5, the relapse risk score increased by 1.301, OR = 3.673 (95%CI: 1.962-6.876，P < 0.001)). PM_2.5 exposure was statistically related to four symptom dimensions of early signs scale (ESS), and the symptoms most affected by the increased PM_2.5 were depression/withdrawal (ESSN) (OR = 1.990, 95%CI: 1.701-2.328), anxiety/agitation (ESS-A) (OR = 1.537, 95%CI: 1.340-1.763), initial psychosis (ESS-IP) (OR = 1.398, 95%CI: 1.151-1.697), and disinhibition (ESS-D) (OR = 1.235, 95%CI: 1.133-1.347). Furthermore, there are three statistically significant pathways in intermediary analysis: of PM_2.5 and relapse risk: "PM_2.5 → IL-17 → ESS", "PM_2.5 → IL-17 → ESS-A", and "PM_2.5 → IL-17 → ESS-N", and the intermediary ratio of IL-17 was 11.66%, 16.37% and 22.55%, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Increased environmental PM_2.5 is a risk factor for the relapse of schizophrenia. Early relapse identification and intervention based on clinical characteristics are of great significance for timely termination of relapse and slowing down of relapse.

Short-term exposure to ambient particulate matter and outpatient visits for respiratory diseases among children: A time-series study in five Chinese cities

There was limited evidence regarding the association between short-term exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM) and respiratory outpatient visits among children at a multicity level. In this study, a time-series study was conducted among children aged 0-14 years in five Chinese cities from 2013 to 2018. City-specific effects of fine particles (PM_2.5), inhalable particles (PM₁₀) and coarse particles (PM_10-2.5) were estimated for time lags of zero up to seven previous days using the overdispersed generalized additive models after adjusting for time trends, meteorological variables, day of the week and holidays. Meta-analyses were applied to pool the overall effects, while the exposure-response (E-R) curves were evaluated using a cubic regression spline. The overall effects of PM were significantly associated with total and cause-specific respiratory outpatients among children, even at PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ levels below the current Chinese Ambient Air Quality Standards (CAAQS) Grade II. Each 10 μg/m³ increment in PM_2.5, PM₁₀ and PM_10-2.5 at lag 07 was associated with a 1.39% (95% CI: 0.38%, 2.40%), 1.10% (95% CI: 0.38%, 1.83%) and 2.93% (95% CI: 1.05%, 4.84%) increase in total respiratory outpatients, respectively. An E-R relationship was observed except for PM_2.5 in Beijing and PM₁₀ and PM_10-2.5 in Shanghai. The effects of PM were stronger in cold season in 3 southern cities, while it was stronger in transition season in 2 northern cities. In conclusion, short-term PM exposures were dose-responsive associated with increased respiratory outpatient visits among children, even for PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ levels below current CAAQS II in certain cities.

Acute effects of ambient air pollution on hospital outpatients with chronic pharyngitis in Xinxiang, China

We present results on a time-series study that analyzed the acute effects of six criteria air pollutants on hospital outpatient with chronic pharyngitis (CP) in Xinxiang, China. Data on the concentration of air pollutants and CP outpatient records were collected daily in Xinxiang, China, from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2018. This study identified 62,823 outpatients with CP. The annual average concentrations of PM_2.5, PM₁₀, SO₂, NO₂, CO, and O₃ are 75.7, 132.1, 33.2, 48.4, 1377, and 59.4 μg/m³, respectively. Further, a 10 μg/m³ increment in the concentration of PM₁₀, SO₂, NO₂, and CO corresponds to an increase of 0.28% (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.03-0.53%), 1.10% (95% CI: 0.09-2.11%), 1.82% (95% CI: 0.84-2.80%), and 0.03% (95% CI: 0.01-0.06%) in daily CP hospital outpatients, respectively. Furthermore, results indicated that outpatients under the age of 15 are more susceptible to the air pollutants, excluding O₃. Meanwhile, males might be more susceptible, and effect estimates appear slightly stronger in the cool season. Therefore, we should implement effective measures to manage air pollutants and reinforce protection of the high-risk population.

Acute effect of ambient air pollution on hospital outpatient cases of chronic sinusitis in Xinxiang, China

Many studies have reported that exposure to ambient air pollution has adverse effects on health. However, there are little researches to explore the relationship between ambient air pollution and chronic sinusitis (CS). From January 1 2015 to December 31 2018, a time-series study were carried out to investigate the acute adverse roles of six criteria ambient air pollutants (fine particulate matter [PM_2.5], inhalable particulate matter [PM₁₀], nitrogen dioxide [NO₂], sulfur dioxide [SO₂], ozone [O₃], and carbon monoxide [CO]) in hospital outpatients with CS in Xinxiang, China. Then, an over-dispersed Poisson generalized additive model was utilized to analyzed the relationships. In total, 183,943 hospital outpatient cases of CS were identified during the study period. We found that a 10 μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5, PM₁₀, SO₂, NO₂, and CO corresponded to 0.48% (95% confidence interval: 0.22-0.74%), 0.33% (0.16-0.50%), 0.88% (0.13-1.62%), 1.98% (1.31-2.64%), and 0.05% (0.03-0.07%) increments, respectively, in CS outpatients on the current day. The young group (<15 years of age) was more susceptible than the adult or elderly groups. These results suggested that outdoor air pollutants might increase CS outpatient, especially among youth in Xinxiang. Precautions and protective measures should be strengthened to reduce the air pollution level in the future.

A case-crossover study on the effect of short-term exposure to moderate levels of air pollution on the risk of heart failure

Aims

Exposure to high levels of air pollution in industrialized urban areas is associated with an increased risk of heart failure (HF). On most days, the majority of European cities are only moderately affected by air pollution. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between short‐term exposure to moderate levels of air pollution with the risk of HF in a city with good air quality.

Methods and results

We recruited 576 patients (median age 82 years; 58.2% men) admitted to a large university hospital in Central Germany for HF to participate in a hospital‐based, bidirectional, case‐crossover study. Diagnosis of HF and symptom onset were verified individually. The effect of short‐term exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), particulate matter (PM₁₀), and ozone (O₃) on the risk of HF was estimated using linear and non‐linear (categorized) multivariate analyses for three different lag times (1, 2, and 3 days before HF onset). Air pollution variables were adjusted to the date of HF symptom onset. During the study period, the average daily concentration of air pollutants was only moderate and reflects the average European background air pollution. In particular, the concentration of air pollutants ranged from 2 to 63.39 μg/m³ (median = 17.46 μg/m³) for NO₂, from 2 to 125.88 μg/m³ (median = 44.61 μg/m³) for O₃, and from 2.21 to 166.79 μg/m³ (median = 18.67 μg/m³) for PM₁₀. We did not find a linear or non‐linear association between short‐term exposure to NO₂, O₃, or PM₁₀ and risk for HF at all lag times in the overall population and subgroups.

Conclusions

In an area with only moderate air pollution, short‐term exposure to major air pollutants does not increase the risk for HF. Future studies should focus on a potential threshold effect of air pollution on HF risk as a basis for evidence‐based development of statutory limits in highly polluted areas.

Effects of hourly levels of ambient air pollution on ambulance emergency call-outs in Shenzhen, China

Some researches have shown the associations between air pollution and hospital-based emergency department visits, while the evidence about the acute effects of air pollution on emergency ambulance dispatches for the whole population is rarely available, especially on an hourly time scale. This paper aimed to investigate the effects of hourly concentrations of ambient air pollution on hourly number of ambulance emergency call-outs (AECOs) in Shenzhen, China. AECO data were collected from Shenzhen Emergency Center from January 2013 to December 2016. A time-stratified case-crossover design with conditional Poisson regression was performed to fit the relationship between hourly air pollution and AECOs. The distributed lag model was applied to determine lag structure of the effects of air pollutants. There were a total of 502,862 AECOs during the study period. The significant detrimental effects of SO₂, PM_2.5, and PM₁₀ appeared immediately with a following harvesting effect after 5 h and the effects lasted for about 96 h. The cumulative effect estimates of four pollutants over 0-96 h were 13.99% (95% CI 7.52-20.85%), 2.07% (95% CI 0.72-3.43%), 1.20% (95% CI 0.54-1.87%), and 2.46% (95% CI 1.63-3.29%), respectively. We did not observe significant effects of O₃. This population-based study quantifies the adverse effects of air pollution on ambulance dispatches and provides evidence of the lag structure of the effects on an hourly time scale.

Relationship between different particle size fractions and all-cause and cause-specific emergency ambulance dispatches

BACKGROUND

Evidence on the relationship between different particle size fractions and emergency ambulance dispatches (EAD) remains limited and sparse.

METHODS

We collected daily data of EAD, ambient air pollution and meteorological data from 2014 to 2018 in Guangzhou, China. We used a generalized additive model with covariate adjustments to estimate the associations between different particle size fractions and EAD related to all-cause, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory diseases. Several subgroup and sensitivity analyses were also performed.

RESULTS

Significant associations were observed between PM_2.5, PM_2.5-10, PM₁₀ and EADs. A 10 μg/m³ increase of PM_2.5, PM_2.5-10, and PM₁₀ was associated with an increase of 0.98% (95% CI: 0.67, 1.28%), 2.06% (95% CI: 1.44, 2.68%), and 0.75% (95%CI: 0.53, 0.96%) in all-cause EAD, with an increase of 0.69% (95% CI: 0.00, 1.39%), 2.04% (95% CI: 0.64, 3.45%), and 0.60% (95%CI: 0.11,1.10%) in cardiovascular-related EAD, and an increase of 1.14% (95% CI: 0.25, 2.04%), 2.52% (95% CI: 0.72, 4.35%), and 0.89% (95%CI: 0.25,1.52%) in respiratory-related EAD at lag03, respectively. The results were robust in subgroup and sensitivity analyses.

CONCLUSIONS

This study revealed that PM_2.5, PM_2.5-10 and PM₁₀ were significantly related with risks of all-cause and cause-specific EAD. More evidence of high quality may be needed to further support our results in this ecological study.

The effects of weather on daily emergency ambulance service demand in Taipei: a comparison with Hong Kong

Numerous studies have examined the effects of weather on emergency ambulance service (EAS) demand. Given Taipei's unique physical and social environments, empirical evidence collected from other regions may not be applicable. Collecting more information about the characteristics of vulnerable groups and the effects of weather could help the EAS managing authority in formulating cost-effective EAS policies. This study aims to look at the effects of weather on EAS demand in Taipei and to make a comparison with Hong Kong, which is also an Asian city and has a similar cultural context. The study analyzed over 370,000 EAS usage records from the Taipei City Fire Department. These records were aggregated into time series data according to patients' characteristics and then regressed on meteorological data via multivariate forward regression. The effect size differences of the variance explained by different groups of EAS users' regression models were compared. Afterward, the results of the regression analysis from Taipei were compared with those from a Hong Kong study. Elderly and critical patients in both cities showed significantly more sensitivity to weather than other patients. Further analysis showed that non-trauma cases were related to weather in Taipei. Although both cities had similar results, the Taipei study clearly showed that elderly and critical patients were more sensitive to weather than other patient subgroups. Health education programs should focus on the vulnerable groups identified in this study in order to increase their awareness and help them protect themselves before the onset of adverse weather conditions. By generating results that are directly applicable to Taipei, the formulation of inappropriate EAS policies can be prevented.

The impact of air pollutants on ambulance dispatches: A systematic review and meta-analysis of acute effects

A number of systematic reviews have investigated the association between air pollutants and health impacts, these mostly focus on morbidity and mortality from hospital data. Previously, no reviews focused solely on ambulance dispatch data. These data sets have excellent potential for environmental health research. For this review, publications up to April 2019 were identified using three main search categories covering: ambulance services including dispatches; air pollutants; and health outcomes. From 308 studies initially identified, 275 were excluded as they did not relate to ambulance service dispatches, did not report the air pollutant association, and/or did not study ambient air pollution. The main health outcomes in the remaining 33 studies were cardiac arrest (n = 14), cardiovascular (n = 11) and respiratory (n = 10) dispatches. Meta-analyses were performed to summarise pooled relative risk (RR) of pollutants: particulate matter less than 2.5 and 10 μm (PM_2.5, PM₁₀), the fraction between PM₁₀ and PM_2.5 (coarse) and suspended particulate matter (SPM) per 10 μg/m³ increase, carbon monoxide (CO) per 1 ppm increase and of sulphur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and ozone (O₃) per 10 ppb increment and ambulance dispatches. Statistically significant associations were found for ambulance dispatch data for all-respiratory and PM_2.5 at 1.03 (95% CI:1.02-1.04) and at 1.10 (95% CI:1.00-1.21) for asthma and NO₂ associations. For dispatches with subsequent paramedic assessment for cardiac arrest with PM_2.5, CO and coarse dispatches at 1.05 (95% CI:1.03-1.08), 1.10 (95% CI:1.02-1.18) and 1.04 (95% CI:1.01-1.06) respectively. For dispatches with subsequent physician diagnosis for all-respiratory and PM_2.5 at 1.02 (95% CI:1.01-1.03). In conclusion, air pollution was significantly associated with an increase in ambulance dispatch data, including those for cardiac arrest, all-respiratory, and asthma dispatches. Ambulance services should plan accordingly during pollution events. Furthermore, efforts to improve air quality should lead to decreases in ambulance dispatches.

The use of vegetation, bees, and snails as important tools for the biomonitoring of atmospheric pollution-a review

The continuous discharge of diverse chemical products in the environment is nowadays of great concern to the whole world as some of them persist in the environment leading to serious diseases. Several sampling techniques have been used for the characterization of this chemical pollution, although biomonitoring using natural samplers has recently become the technique of choice in this field due to its efficiency, specificity, and low cost. In fact, several living organisms known as biomonitors could accumulate the well-known persistent environmental pollutants allowing their monitoring in the environment. In this work, a review on environmental biomonitoring is presented. The main sampling techniques used for monitoring environmental pollutants are first reported, followed by an overview on well-known natural species used as passive samplers and known as biomonitors. These species include conifer needles, lichen, mosses, bees and their byproducts, and snails, and were widely used in recent research as reliable monitors for environmental pollution.

Size-resolved particle oxidative potential in the office, laboratory, and home: Evidence for the importance of water-soluble transition metals

Particulate matter (PM) oxidative potential (OP) is an emerging health metric, but studies examining the OP of indoor PM are rare. This paper focuses on the relationships between respiratory exposure to OP and PM water-soluble composition in indoor environments. Size-resolved PM samples were collected between November 2015 and June 2016 from an office, home (including bedroom, living room, and storeroom), and laboratory using a MOUDI sampler. Particles from each source were segregated into eleven size bins, and the water-soluble metal content and dithiothreitol (DTT) loss rate were measured in each PM extract. The water-soluble OP (OP_ws) of indoor PM was highest in the office and lowest in the home, varying by factors of up to 1.2; these variations were attributed to differences in occupation density, occupant activity, and ventilation. In addition, the particulate Cu, Mn, and Fe concentrations were closely correlated with OP_ws in indoor particles; the transition metals may have acted as catalysts during oxidation processes, inducing ·OH formation through the concomitant consumption of DTT. The OP_ws particle size distributions featured single modes with peaks between 0.18 and 3.2 μm across all indoor sites, reflecting the dominant contribution of PM_3.2 to total PM levels and the enhanced oxidative activity of the PM_3.2 compared to PM_>3.2. Lung-deposition model calculations indicated that PM_3.2 dominated the pulmonary deposition of the OP_ws (>75%) due to both the high levels of metals content and the high deposition efficiency in the alveolar region. Therefore, because OP_ws has been directly linked to various health effects, special attention should be given to PM_3.2.

The association between short-term ambient air pollution and daily outpatient visits for schizophrenia: A hospital-based study

Schizophrenia is a devastating neuropsychiatric disorder with increasing concern. Limited studies have been conducted to assess the relationship between short-term exposure to ambient air pollution and schizophrenia attacks. This study aimed to investigate the associations between short-term air pollution exposure and schizophrenia outpatient visits based on a time-series study performed in China. Daily data of schizophrenia outpatient admissions and air pollution from 1 October 2010 to 31 December 2013 were collected in Xi'an, a heavily-polluted city in China. We utilized a time-series Poisson regression model to examine the associations between short-term air pollution and schizophrenia outpatient visits with different lag days. A total of 34,865 outpatient-visits for schizophrenia were identified. A 10 μg/m³ increase of PM₁₀, SO₂, and NO₂ concentrations corresponded to 0.289% (95% Cl: 0.118%, 0.460%), 1.374% (95% Cl: 0.723%, 2.025%), and 1.881% (95% Cl: 0.957%, 2.805%) elevation in outpatient-visits for schizophrenia at lag 0, and the associations appeared to be stronger, although not statistically significantly, in females and in middle and older age adults (40 and over). The most significant associations were observed on the concurrent day in different lag models. In conclusion, short-term exposure to ambient air pollution (PM₁₀, SO₂, and NO₂) can be associated with increased risk of daily outpatient visits for schizophrenia, which may contribute to the further understanding of the potential adverse effects of air pollution in schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric disorders.

Acute effect of fine and coarse particular matter on cardiovascular visits in Ningbo, China

Although a growing number of epidemiological studies have been conducted on size-specific health effects of particulate matter in China, results remain inconsistent. In this study, we investigated acute effect of fine and coarse particular matter on cardiovascular hospital visits in Ningbo, China. We used generalized additive models to examine short-term effects of PM_2.5 and PM_10-2.5 on cardiovascular hospital visits by adjustment for temporal, seasonal, and meteorological effects. Subgroup analyses were conducted by age, sex, and season. We also examined the stability of their effects in multi-pollutant models. We found that PM_2.5 were associated with cardiovascular hospital visits (RR = 1.006; 95% CI 1.000, 1.011) and results remained similar after adjustment for PM_10-2.5 (RR = 1.005; 95% CI 0.998, 1.013). There was a borderline association between PM_10-2.5 and cardiovascular hospital visits (RR = 1.007; 95% CI 0.997, 1.016), which disappeared after controlling for PM_2.5 (RR = 1.000; 95% CI 0.988, 1.013). The associations appeared to be stronger in the cold season and among the elderly (≥ 75 years). The findings of this study suggested significant adverse effects of PM_2.5, but no independent effects of PM_10-2.5 on cardiovascular hospital visits. Additional studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Association Between PM2.5 and Daily Hospital Admissions for Heart Failure: A Time-Series Analysis in Beijing

There is little evidence that acute exposure to fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) impacts the rate of hospitalization for congestive heart failure (CHF) in developing countries. The primary purpose of the present retrospective study was to evaluate the short-term association between ambient PM_2.5 and hospitalization for CHF in Beijing, China. A total of 15,256 hospital admissions for CHF from January 2010 to June 2012 were identified from Beijing Medical Claim Data for Employees and a time-series design with generalized additive Poisson model was used to assess the obtained data. We found a clear significant exposure response association between PM_2.5 and the number of hospitalizations for CHF. Increasing PM_2.5 daily concentrations by 10 μg/m³ caused a 0.35% (95% CI, 0.06⁻0.64%) increase in the number of CHF admissions on the same day. We also found that female and older patients were more susceptible to PM_2.5. These associations remained significant in sensitivity analyses involving changing the degrees of freedom of calendar time, temperature, and relative humidity. PM_2.5 was associated with significantly increased risk of hospitalization for CHF in this citywide study. These findings may contribute to the limited scientific evidence about the acute impacts of PM_2.5 on CHF in China.

Acute effects of air pollution on type II diabetes mellitus hospitalization in Shijiazhuang, China

Air pollution has been considered as an important contributor to diabetes development. However, the evidence is fewer in developing countries where air pollution concentrations were much higher. In this study, we conduct a time-series study to investigate the acute adverse effect of six air pollutants on type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) hospitalization in Shijiazhuang, China. An over-dispersed passion generalized addictive model adjusted for weather conditions, day of the week, and long-term and seasonal trends was used. Finally, a 10-μg/m³ increase of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5), inhalable particulate matter (PM₁₀), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and carbon monoxide (CO) corresponded to 0.53% (95% confidence interval = 0.22-0.83), 0.32% (95% CI = 0.10-0.55), 0.55% (95% CI = 0.04-1.07), 1.27% (95% CI = 0.33-2.22), and 0.04% (95% CI = 0.02-0.06) increment of T2DM hospitalization, respectively. The effects of PM_2.5, PM₁₀, and CO were robust when adjusted for co-pollutants. The associations appeared to be a little stronger in the cool season than in the warm season. And stronger associations were found in male and elderly (≥ 65 years) than in female and younger people (35-65 years). Our results contribute to the limited data in the scientific literature on acute effects of air pollution on type II diabetes mellitus in developing countries.

MAIN FINDINGS

This is the first adverse effect evidence of air pollution on T2DM in Shijiazhuang, a severely polluted city in China. Males were more vulnerable than females in severe pollution.

Acute effects of ambient particulate matter pollution on hospital admissions for mental and behavioral disorders: A time-series study in Shijiazhuang, China

Until now, few epidemiological studies have focused on the association between ambient particulate matter pollution and mental and behavioral disorders, especially in developing countries. Thus, a time-series study on the short-term association between both fine and inhalable particles (PM_2.5 and PM₁₀) and daily hospital admissions for mental and behavioral disorders in Shijiazhuang, China was conducted, from 2014 to 2016. An over-dispersed, generalized additive model was used to analyze the associations after controlling for time trend, weather conditions, day of the week, and holidays. In addition, the modification effects of age, sex, and season were estimated. A total of 9156 cases of hospital admissions for mental and behavioral disorders were identified. A 10 μg/m³ increase in a 3-day average concentration (lag02) of PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ correspond to an increase of 0.48% (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.18-0.79%) and 0.32% (95% CI: 0.03-0.62%) in daily hospital admission for mental and behavioral disorders, respectively. We found stronger associations of PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ with mental and behavioral disorders in male and elder individuals (≥45 years) than in female and younger individuals (<45 years). Further, results indicated a generally stronger association of PM_2.5 with mental and behavioral disorders in the cool season than in the warm season. This research found a significant association between ambient PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ and hospital admission for mental and behavioral disorders in Shijiazhuang, China.

Acute effects of ambient air pollution on outpatient children with respiratory diseases in Shijiazhuang, China

Background

Associations between ambient air pollution and child health outcomes have been well documented in developed countries such as the United States; however, only a limited number of studies have been conducted in developing countries. This study aimed to explore the acute effects of five ambient air pollutants (inhalable particles [PM₁₀], fine particles [PM_2.5], sulfur dioxide [SO₂], nitrogen dioxide [NO₂] and 0zone [O₃]) on children hospital outpatients with respiratory diseases in Shijiazhuang, China.

Methods

Three years (2013–2015) of daily data, including cause-specific respiratory outpatient records and the concentrations of five air pollutants, were collected to examine the short-term association between air pollution and children’s respiratory diseases; using a quasi-Poisson regression generalized additive model. Stratified analyses by season and age were also performed.

Results

From 2013 to 2015, a total of 551,678 hospital outpatient records for children with respiratory diseases were collected in Shijiazhuang, China. A 10 μg/m³ increase in a two-day average concentration (lag01) of NO₂, PM_2.5, and SO₂ corresponded to an increase of 0.66% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.30–1.03%), 0.13% (95% CI: 0.02–0.24%), and 0.33% (95% CI: 0.10–0.56%) in daily hospital outpatient visits for children with respiratory diseases, respectively. The effects were stronger in the transition season (April, May, September and October) than in other seasons (the hot season [June to August] and the cool season [November to March]). Furthermore, results indicated a generally stronger association in older (7–14 years of age) than younger children (< 7 years of age).

Conclusions

This research found a significant association between ambient NO₂, PM_2.5, and SO₂ levels and hospital outpatient visits in child with respiratory diseases in Shijiazhuang, China.

Ambient particulate matter air pollution associated with acute respiratory distress syndrome in Guangzhou, China

Limited evidence exists concerning the impact of particulate pollution on acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We examined the effects of particulate pollution on emergency ambulance dispatches (EAD) for ARDS in Guangzhou, China. Daily air pollution concentrations for PM₁₀, PM_2.5, and PM₁, as well as PM_2.5 chemical compositions, were available from a central air monitoring station. The association between incident ARDS and air pollution on the concurrent and previous 5 days was estimated by an over-dispersed Poisson generalized additive model controlling for meteorological factors, temporal trends, public holidays and day of the week. We identified a total of 17,002 EADs for ARDS during the study period. There were significant associations between concentrations of PM₁₀, PM_2.5, PM_1, and ARDS; corresponding excess risk (ER) for an interquartile range IQR increase in 1-day lagged concentration was 5.45% [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.70%, 9.33%] for PM₁₀ (45.4 μg/m³), 4.71% (95% CI: 1.09%, 8.46%) for PM_2.5 (31.5 μg/m³), and 4.45% (95% CI: 0.81%, 8.23%) for PM₁ (28.8 μg/m³), respectively. For PM_2.5 chemical compositions, we found that OC, EC, sulfate and ammonium were significantly associated with ARDS. The observed effects remained even after adjusting for potentially confounding factors. This study suggests that PM₁₀, PM_2.5, and PM₁, as well as chemical constituents from combustion and secondary aerosols might be important triggers of ARDS in Guangzhou.

Effect of Ambient Air Pollution on Hospitalization for Heart Failure in 26 of China's Largest Cities

There is growing interest in the association between ambient air pollution and congestive heart failure (CHF), but research data from developing countries are very limited. The primary aim of this study was to examine the association between short-term exposure to air pollution and hospital admission for CHF in China. A time-stratified case-crossover study was conducted between 2014 and 2015 in 26 large Chinese cities among 105,501 CHF hospitalizations. Conditional logistic regression models were applied to estimate the percentage changes in CHF admissions in relation to per interquartile range increases in air pollutant concentrations. Air pollution was positively associated with CHF hospitalizations. An interquartile range increase in fine particulate, particulate matter less than 10 µm in aerodynamic diameter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and ozone concentrations on the current day corresponded to 1.2% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.5%, 1.8%), 1.3% (95% CI 0.5%, 2.0%), 1.0% (95% CI 0.2%, 1.7%), 1.6% (95% CI 0.6%, 2.5%), 1.2% (95% CI 0.5%, 1.9%), and 0.4% (95% CI -0.9%, 1.7%) increases in CHF admissions, respectively. In conclusion, our findings contribute to the limited scientific literature concerning the effects of air pollution on CHF risk for high-exposure settings typical in developing countries, which may have significant public health implications for prevention of CHF in China.

Air pollution and hospital visits for acute upper and lower respiratory infections among children in Ningbo, China: A time-series analysis

Acute upper and lower respiratory infections are main causes of mortality and morbidity in children. Air pollution has been recognized as an important contributor to development and exacerbation of respiratory infections. However, few studies are available in China. In this study, we investigated the short-term effect of air pollution on hospital visits for acute upper and lower respiratory infections among children under 15 years in Ningbo, China. Poisson generalized models were used to estimate the associations between air pollution and hospital visits for acute upper and lower respiratory infections adjusted for temporal, seasonal, and meteorological effects. We found that four pollutants (PM_2.5, PM₁₀, NO₂, and SO₂) were significantly associated with hospital visits for acute upper and lower respiratory infections. The effect estimates for acute upper respiratory infections tended to be higher (PM_2.5 ER = 3.46, 95% CI 2.18, 4.76; PM₁₀ ER = 2.81, 95% CI 1.93, 3.69; NO₂ ER = 11.27, 95% CI 8.70, 13.89; SO₂ ER = 15.17, 95% CI 11.29, 19.19). Significant associations for gaseous pollutants (NO₂ and SO₂) were observed after adjustment for particular matter. Stronger associations were observed among older children and in the cold period. Our study suggested that short-term exposure to outdoor air pollution was associated with hospital visits for acute upper and lower respiratory infections in Ningbo.

Short-term effects of ambient air pollution and childhood lower respiratory diseases

The association between air pollution and childhood respiratory disease is inconsistent. In the present study, we investigated a short-term effect of ambient air pollutants and daily childhood lower respiratory diseases (CLRD). Daily air pollutants, weather data, and CLRD data were collected from January 2014 to April 2015 (452 days) in Nanjing, China. Time-series regression and generalized additive models were used to assess the effects of air pollutants (PM₁₀, PM_2.5, NO₂, SO₂, O₃, and CO) on CLRD. We observed that an interquartile range (IQR) increase in concentrations of PM₁₀, NO₂, and SO₂ significantly increased the daily CLRD with 6 days cumulative effects (difference of estimates: 2.8%, 95% CI: 0.6–5.0%; 4.1%, 1.2–7.0%; 5.6%, 2.6–8.6%, respectively). However, no significant association was found in IQR concentrations of PM_2.5, O₃, and CO. Specifically, elevated PM₁₀, PM_2.5, NO₂, and SO₂ significantly increased the numbers of CLRD in cool season (3.6%, 1.5–5.7%; 2.4%, 0.3–4.5%; 4.9%, 2.9–7.0%; 6.3%, 3.7–9.0%, respectively). Additionally, the effect estimates of PM₁₀, NO₂, and SO₂ in female and age >27 months were more pronounced than in male and age ≤27 months. This study suggested that short-term exposure to ambient PM₁₀, NO₂, and SO₂ were associated with the increased CLRD numbers.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Exposed-Lawn Soils from 28 Urban Parks in the Megacity Guangzhou: Occurrence, Sources, and Human Health Implications

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban soils may pose a serious threat to human health via oral ingestion, dermal absorption, and particulate inhalation, especially in public parks and playgrounds, with children and senior citizens showing the highest susceptibility. Several studies have been undertaken identifying PAHs in urban soils, but no studies to date have assessed PAHs in urban parks, in particular in exposed-lawn soils. In recent decades, unprecedented rates of urbanization and industrialization in China have resulted in significant levels of urban environmental pollution. However, concentrations, sources, and the health risk associated with PAH exposure via urban park lawn soils in China remain unknown. The concentrations, sources, and health risk of exposure to 16 PAHs in surface-exposed lawn soils were studied in 28 urban parks in Guangzhou. Concentrations of Σ16PAHs ranged from 76.44 to 890.85 ng/g with a mean of 286.11 ng/g. PAH composition was mostly characterized by 2- and 4-ring PAHs in most sampling parks; Nap, Flua, Pyr, Phe, and Chr were the dominant constituents. Principle component analysis coupled with multivariate linear regression indicated that vehicular and coal combustion emissions contributed to 50.53 and 49.46% of PAHs in Guangzhou's urban park soils, respectively. Total cancer risk (TCR) analysis found that 22 parks (accounting for 78.57% total parks) designed for children's use and general-use park areas presented a potentially high risk (>1 × 10^-4) for all users.
