Abstract
Current uric acid detection methodologies lack the requisite sensitivity and selectivity for point-of-care applications. Plasmonic sensors, while promising, demand refinement for improved performance. This work introduces a biofunctionalized sensor predicated on surface plasmon resonance to quantify uric acid within physiologically relevant concentration ranges. The sensor employs the covalent immobilization of uricase enzyme using 1-Ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (EDC) and N-Hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) crosslinking agents, ensuring the durable adherence of the enzyme onto the sensor probe. Characterization through atomic force microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy validate surface alterations. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm model elucidates binding kinetics, revealing a sensor binding affinity of 298.83 (mg/dL)-1, and a maximum adsorption capacity of approximately 1.0751°. The biofunctionalized sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 0.0755°/(mg/dL), a linear correlation coefficient of 0.8313, and a limit of detection of 0.095 mg/dL. Selectivity tests against potentially competing interferents like glucose, ascorbic acid, urea, D-cystine, and creatinine showcase a significant resonance angle shift of 1.1135° for uric acid compared to 0.1853° for interferents at the same concentration. Significantly, at a low uric acid concentration of 0.5 mg/dL, a distinct shift of 0.3706° was observed, setting it apart from the lower values noticed at higher concentrations for all typical interferent samples. The uricase enzyme significantly enhances plasmonic sensors for uric acid detection, showcasing a seamless integration of optical principles and biological recognition elements. These sensors hold promise as vital tools in clinical and point-of-care settings, offering transformative potential in biosensing technologies and the potential to revolutionize healthcare outcomes in biomedicine.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia has evolved into a global public health concern, and applying probiotics fermented apple juice holds promise for alleviating this condition. This study aimed to investigate the biotransformation and metabolic features of urate-lowering probiotics sequentially fermented dealcoholized apple juice (PSFA), and assess its ameliorative effects and potential mechanisms on hyperuricemia mice. Results showed that CICC 6074 and 20,292 possessed excellent purine, nucleotide and nucleoside degradation and acid and bile salt resistance; sequential fermentation decreased the fructose in apple juice, and viable counts reached 3.76 × 108 CFU/mL. Histopathological analysis showed that PSFA ameliorated kidney damage in hyperuricemia mice. Furthermore, PSFA significantly reduced Urea, Creatinine and Uric acid levels in hyperuricemia mice; and inhibited xanthine oxidase activity and the expression of pro-inflammatory factors. Importantly, PSFA reversed gut microbiota dysbiosis and raised the abundance of beneficial bacteria (Lactobacillush, Faecalibaculum and Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group). KEGG and COG functional prediction results revealed that the potential mechanism of PSFA to ameliorate hyperuricemia may be lipid metabolism and glycolysis pathways.

Abstract
Since its discovery, numerous studies have shown the role of the microbiota in well-being and disease. The gut microbiota represents an essential factor that plays a multidirectional role that affects not just the gut but also other parts of the body, including the brain, endocrine system, humoral system, immune system, and metabolic pathways, as well as host-microbiome interactions. Through a comprehensive analysis of existing literature using the desktop research methodology, this review elucidates the mechanisms by which gut microbiota dysbiosis contributes to metabolic dysfunction, including obesity, dyslipidaemia, hypertension, atherosclerosis, hyperuricemia, and hyperglycaemia. Furthermore, it examines the bidirectional communication pathways between gut microbiota and host metabolism, highlighting the role of microbial-derived metabolites, immune modulation, and gut barrier integrity in shaping metabolic homeostasis. Importantly, the review identifies promising therapeutic strategies targeting the gut microbiota as potential interventions for metabolic syndrome, including probiotics, prebiotics, symbiotics, dietary modifications, and faecal microbiota transplantation. By delineating the bidirectional interactions between gut microbiota and metabolic syndrome, the review not only advances our understanding of disease pathophysiology but also underscores the potential for innovative microbiota-based interventions to mitigate the global burden of metabolic syndrome and its associated complications.

High Alt Med Biol. 00:00-00, 2024. Objectives: Hypoxia at high altitudes results in elevated uric acid (UA) and reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). However, the impact of a prolonged high-altitude sojourn on UA levels and renal function in patients with preexisting hyperuricemia warrants further exploration. The study was to investigate the eGFR and related factors in patients with preexisting hyperuricemia following exposure to high altitude. Methods: The study included 345 participants, who worked at a high altitude for 1 year. Anthropometric and laboratory indices were collected before ascent (i.e., baseline), as well as 20 and 80 days after descent. The participants were categorized into individuals with hyperuricemia (HUA) or normal uric acid (NUA) group based on the presence or absence of hyperuricemia at baseline. Results: No difference in baseline eGFR was observed between the two groups before ascend or on day 20 after descent (p > 0.05). However, on day 80, eGFR of the HUA group was lower compared with the NUA group (p < 0.05). Correlations existed between post-descent eGFR levels and variables, including sampling time, UA levels, total and direct bilirubin, and baseline grouping. Conclusions: After high-altitude exposure, the recovery of eGFR was delayed in participants with preexisting hyperuricemia. Preexisting hyperuricemia and high-altitude hypoxia jointly contribute to renal impairment.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) are a major concern in marine ecosystem because MPs are persistent and ubiquitous in oceans and are easily consumed by marine biota. Although many studies have reported the toxicity of MPs to marine biota, the toxicity of environmentally relevant types of MPs is little understood. We investigated the toxic effects of fragmented polyethylene terephthalate (PET) MP, one of the most abundant MPs in the ocean, on the marine rotifer Brachionus koreanus at the individual and molecular level. No significant rotifer mortality was observed after exposure to PET MPs for 24 and 48 h. The ingestion and egestion assays showed that rotifers readily ingested PET MPs in the absence of food but not when food was supplied; thus, there were also no chronic effects of PET MPs. In contrast, intracellular reactive oxygen species levels and glutathione S-transferase activity in rotifers were significantly increased by PET MPs. Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses revealed that genes and metabolites related to energy metabolism and immune processes were significantly affected by PET MPs in a concentration-dependent manner. Although acute toxicity of PET MPs was not observed, PET MPs are potentially toxic to the antioxidant system, immune system, and energy metabolism in rotifers.

Abstract
Acute physiological responses to psychosocial stressors are a potential pathway underlying racial disparities in stress-related illnesses. Uric acid (UA) is a potent antioxidant that has been linked to disparities in stress-related illnesses, and recent research has shown that UA is responsive to acute social stress. However, an examination of the relationships between the purinergic system and other commonly measured stress systems is lacking. Here, we measure and characterize associations of salivary uric acid (sUA) with markers of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activation, sympathetic-adreno-medullar (SAM) axis activation, and acute inflammation. A community sample of 103 African Americans (33 male, 70 female) completed the Trier Social Stress Test to induce social-evaluative threat. Passive drool collected before, during, and after the stressor task provided salivary reactivity measures of UA (sUA), cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), salivary alpha amylase (sAA - a surrogate marker of SAM activity) and C-reactive protein (sCRP). Multiple regressions revealed that total activation of cortisol, DHEAS, and sCRP were each positively associated with higher total activation of sUA. Additionally, DHEAS reactivity was positively associated with sUA reactivity. Relationships between HPA-axis markers and sUA were especially observed among younger and male participants. Overall, findings suggest potential coordination of stress systems with sUA in response to acute stress, which may further the contributions of biological stress processes to racial health disparities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the correlation between hyperuricemia and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is well known, there have been limited data regarding the impact of hyperuricemia on long-term clinical outcomes in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA). METHODS A total of 718 patients who underwent PTA for PAD were enrolled. The patients were divided into the hyperuricemia group (N = 168) and the normal group (N = 550). Hyperuricemia was defined as a uric acid level ≥ 7.0 mg/dL in men, and ≥ 6.5 mg/dL in women. The primary endpoint was major adverse cerebral and cardiovascular event (MACCE), including death, myocardial infarction (MI), any coronary revascularization, and stroke, up to 5 years. The secondary endpoint was major adverse limb event (MALE), including any repeated PTA, and target extremity surgery (TES). Inverse probability weighting (IPTW) analysis, derived from the logistic regression model, was performed to adjust potential confounders. RESULTS After IPTW matching analysis, compared to the normal group, the hyperuricemia group was not associated with increased MACCE but was associated with an increased incidence of MI (2.6 % vs. 0.5 %, p = 0.001), and coronary revascularization (6.7 % vs. 3.9 %, p = 0.018). Also, the hyperuricemia group was associated with a higher incidence of MALE (45.3 % vs. 28.9 %, p < 0.001), including target extremity revascularization (TER; 25.1 % vs. 15.9 %, p < 0.001), non-TER (11.5 % vs. 5.6 %, p < 0.001), and TES (22.8 % vs. 16.2 %, p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS In the present study, hyperuricemia was associated with worse clinical outcomes in PAD patients following PTA during 5-year clinical follow-up. Further investigations should be made regarding the clinical benefit of controlling hyperuricemia on clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Uric acid is the final metabolite in humans. High level of uric acid chronically induces urate deposition, aggravates kidney damage, and concomitantly causes an increase in inflammatory factors. Alleviating acute inflammation and decreasing uric acid levels are the key points in the treatment of inflammatory diseases associated with high uric acid. However, a drug delivery system that combines anti-inflammatory and uric acid reduction functions at the same time remains a challenge to be settled. Here, we designed a nanocrystal-based co-delivery platform, IND Nplex, characterized by loading of indomethacin (IND) and uricase. Compared with free IND or uricase, IND Nplex possessed a better anti-inflammatory effect by restraining the release of inflammation-related factors in vitro. In addition, pharmacokinetic and biodistribution studies revealed that IND Nplex significantly prolonged the retention time in vivo and was more concentrated in the kidney. In acute gouty arthritis model rats, IND Nplex markedly relieved ankle joint swelling and mitigated synovial inflammation. In acute kidney injury model rats, IND Nplex indicated better biocompatibility and significant amelioration of renal fibrosis. Moreover, IND Nplex showed the effect of anti-inflammatory and improved renal function via determination of inflammatory factors and biochemical markers in the serum and kidney. In conclusion, these results indicate that IND Nplex exerts anti-inflammatory activity and uric acid-lowering effect and could become a promising candidate for the treatment of uric acid-related diseases.

Abstract
The study was planned to evaluate the differences in certain proinflammatory cytokines(IL-6, TNF-α) with CRP and biochemical parameters (E2, D3, LDH, GGT, TSB, Ca, Ph, uric acid), between women with pre- and postmenopausal breast cancer and seemingly healthy women in Iraqi women as controls; at medical city in teaching Oncology hospital,70 breast cancer patients women their ages ranged (47.51 ± 1.18) and 20 healthy women with age (44.45 ± 2.66) begun from September (2020) to February (2021). The aims of this study to investigate the evaluation of chemotherapy effects especially doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide only use in this study in pre and postmenopausal breast cancer women on proinflammatory cytokines(IL-6, TNF-α) with CRP and on biochemical parameters(E2, D3, LDH, GGT, TSB, Ca, Ph, uric acid) in pre and postmenapausal breast cancer women. The patients were divided into five groups and each group contains 14 patients women with breast cancer during pre and postmenopausal periods. The control groups were divided into 10 pre and 10 postmenopausal women(Fig. 1). The results of proinflammatory cytokines of and biochemical parameters in premenopausal groups were as the levels of IL-6 (pg/ml),TNF-α(pg/ml) and CRP (ng/ml) showed significant increase differences (P < 0.01)among breast cancer treated (BCT) groups in comparison with control groups,While the Liver enzymes GGT,LDH and TSB showed highly significant increase (P < 0.01) in BCT groups, Estrogen levels (pg/ml) and D3(ng/ml) increased significantly (P < 0.01)among BCT groups. Blood serum calcium and phosphorus with uric acid levels (mg/dl) showed significant difference (P < 0.01); While the result in postmenopausal of IL-6(pg/ml), TNF-α (pg/ml) and CRP (ng/ml) showed highly significant differences (P < 0.01)among BCT groups.While GGT(IU/L), LDH(IU/L) and TSB (mg/dl) enzymes were increased significantly (p < 0.01), Estrogen (pg/ml) and D3(ng/ml) levels showed significant increase (P < 0.01) among BCT groups.Blood calcium and phosphorus showed significant increase (P < 0.01) while uric acid was non-significant increase (P > 0.05).

Abstract
To explore the characteristics of hematologic indicators and related risk factors of lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (LDVT) in patients with cerebral infarction. METHODS This study retrospectively analyzed data from 174 patients with cerebral infarction admitted to The Rehabilitation Department of Shanghai Fifth Rehabilitation Hospital and Shanghai First People's Hospital from June 2022 to June 2023. Based on the results of lower limb venous color Doppler ultrasound examinations, patients were divided into two groups: the LDVT group (35 cases) and the non-LDVT group (139 cases). We compared the clinical data and hematologic indicators (D-dimer value, fibrinogen, white blood cells, platelets, uric acid, creatinine, etc.) of the two groups to identify the risk factors of cerebral infarction complicated with LDVT. RESULTS Statistical analysis revealed that the D-dimer values of the LDVT group were significantly (P<0.05) higher than those of the non-LDVT group. The uric acid value of the LDVT group was significantly lower than that of the non-LDVT group, with statistical significance (P<0.05). The Brunnstrom staging in the LDVT group was significantly different from that in the non-LDVT group (P<0.05). Meanwhile, binary logistic regression analysis showed that LDVT complicated with cerebral infarction was associated with D-dimer level [OR=1.302, 95% CI (1.077, 1.575)], uric acid level [OR=0.995, 95% CI (0.990, 1.000)], and Brunnstrom staging [OR=3.005, 95% CI (1.312, 6.880)]. CONCLUSION D-dimer value, uric acid value, and Brunnstrom stage I to II are closely related to the occurrence of LDVT in patients with cerebral infarction. High D-dimer value, low uric acid value, and Brunnstrom stage I to II are independent risk factors for LDVT in cerebral infarction. Early assessment of D-dimer value, uric acid value, and Brunnstrom stage of cerebral infarction should be considered in clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of hyperuricaemia (HUA), a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated levels of uric acid, is on the rise and is frequently associated with renal injury. Gut microbiota and gut-derived uremic toxins are critical mediators in the gut-kidney axis that can cause damage to kidney function. Gut dysbiosis has been implicated in various kidney diseases. However, the role and underlying mechanism of the gut microbiota in HUA-induced renal injury remain unknown. RESULTS A HUA rat model was first established by knocking out the uricase (UOX). HUA rats exhibited apparent renal dysfunction, renal tubular injury, fibrosis, NLRP3 inflammasome activation, and impaired intestinal barrier functions. Analysis of 16S rRNA sequencing and functional prediction data revealed an abnormal gut microbiota profile and activation of pathways associated with uremic toxin production. A metabolomic analysis showed evident accumulation of gut-derived uremic toxins in the kidneys of HUA rats. Furthermore, faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) was performed to confirm the effects of HUA-induced gut dysbiosis on renal injury. Mice recolonized with HUA microbiota exhibited severe renal injury and impaired intestinal barrier functions following renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) surgery. Notably, in NLRP3-knockout (NLRP3-/-) I/R mice, the deleterious effects of the HUA microbiota on renal injury and the intestinal barrier were eliminated. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrate that HUA-induced gut dysbiosis contributes to the development of renal injury, possibly by promoting the production of gut-derived uremic toxins and subsequently activating the NLRP3 inflammasome. Our data suggest a potential therapeutic strategy for the treatment of renal diseases by targeting the gut microbiota and the NLRP3 inflammasome. Video Abstract.

Abstract
Background Hyperuricemia, as a very prevalent chronic metabolic disease with increasing prevalence year by year, poses a significant burden on individual patients as well as on the global health care and disease burden, and there is growing evidence that it is associated with other underlying diseases such as hypertension and cardiovascular disease. The association between hyperuricemia and dietary inflammatory index (DII) scores was investigated in this study. Methods This study enrolled 13, 040 adult subjects (aged ≥ 20 years) from the US National Health and Nutrition Survey from 2003 to 2018. The inflammatory potential of the diet was assessed by the DII score, and logistic regression was performed to evaluate the relationship between the DII score and the development of hyperuricemia; subgroup analyses were used to discuss the influence of other factors on the relationship. Results Participants in the other quartiles had an increased risk of hyperuricemia compared to those in the lowest quartile of DII scores. Stratification analyses stratified by body mass index (BMI), sex, hypertension, drinking, diabetes, education level and albumin-creatinine-ratio (ACR) revealed that the DII score was also associated with the risk of hyperuricemia (P<0.05). There was an interaction in subgroup analysis stratified by sex, age, and hypertension (P for interaction <0.05). The results showed a linear-like relationship between DII and hyperuricemia, with a relatively low risk of developing hyperuricemia at lower DII scores and an increased risk of developing hyperuricemia as DII scores increased. Conclusions This study showed that the risk of hyperuricemia increased at slightly higher DII scores (i.e., with pro-inflammatory diets), but not significantly at lower levels (i.e., with anti-inflammatory diets). The contribution of the DII score to the development of hyperuricemia increased with higher scores. The relationship between inflammatory diets and hyperuricemia requires more research on inflammation, and this study alerts the public that pro-inflammatory diets may increase the risk of developing hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Xanthine Oxidoreductase (XOR) is a ubiquitous, essential enzyme responsible for the terminal steps of purine catabolism, ultimately producing uric acid that is eliminated by the kidneys. XOR is also a physiological source of superoxide ion, hydrogen peroxide, and nitric oxide, which can function as second messengers in the activation of various physiological pathways, as well as contribute to the development and the progression of chronic conditions including kidney diseases, which are increasing in prevalence worldwide. XOR activity can promote oxidative distress, endothelial dysfunction, and inflammation through the biological effects of reactive oxygen species; nitric oxide and uric acid are the major products of XOR activity. However, the complex relationship of these reactions in disease settings has long been debated, and the environmental influences and genetics remain largely unknown. In this review, we give an overview of the biochemistry, biology, environmental, and current clinical impact of XOR in the kidney. Finally, we highlight recent genetic studies linking XOR and risk for kidney disease, igniting enthusiasm for future biomarker development and novel therapeutic approaches targeting XOR.

Abstract
This study integrates hollow microneedle arrays (HMNA) with a novel jellyfish-shaped electrochemical sensor for the detection of key biomarkers, including uric acid (UA), glucose, and pH, in artificial interstitial fluid. The jellyfish-shaped sensor displayed linear responses in detecting UA and glucose via differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and chronoamperometry, respectively. Notably, the open circuit potential (OCP) of the system showed a linear variation with pH changes, validating its pH-sensing capability. The sensor system demonstrates exceptional electrochemical responsiveness within the physiological concentration ranges of these biomarkers in simulated epidermis sensing applications. The detection linear ranges of UA, glucose, and pH were 0~0.8 mM, 0~7 mM, and 4.0~8.0, respectively. These findings highlight the potential of the HMNA-integrated jellyfish-shaped sensors in real-world epidermal applications for comprehensive disease diagnosis and health monitoring.

Abstract
Objectives The study aimed to investigate the diagnostic values of different musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) signs, serum uric acid (SUA), and their combined detection for gouty arthritis (GA). Patients and methods In this retrospective study, 70 patients (62 males, 8 females; mean age: 46.1±14.1 years; range, 25 to 86 years) diagnosed with GA (the GA group) between August 2022 and March 2023 and 70 patients (54 females, 16 males; mean age: 49.0±14.1 years; range, 21 to 75 years) diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis during the same period (the non-GA group) were included. The positive rate of MSUS signs and SUA in both groups was recorded to compare the differences. The correlations of MSUS signs and SUA with GA were analyzed using Spearman's rank correlation analysis. The diagnostic values of different MSUS signs, SUA, and their combined detection for GA were analyzed using a receiver operating characteristic, the area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, and the Youden index. Results The positive rate of the double contour (DC) sign (chi-squared [χ2 ]=102.935, p<0.001), hyperechoic spots (χ2=56.395, p<0.001), bone erosions (χ2 =10.080, p<0.001), and SUA (χ2 =41.117, p <0.001) were higher in the GA group than in the non-GA group. The positive rate of the DC sign (rs=0.829, p=0.001), hyperechoic spots (rs=0.631, p<0.001), bone erosion (rs=0.268, p=0.001), and SUA (rs=0.542, p<0.001) were positively correlated with GA. Among the single-indicator measures, the DC sign exhibited the highest diagnostic value (AUC=0.907, sensitivity=81.4%, specificity=100%, p<0.001). Among the combined-indicator measures, the DC sign combined with SUA exhibited the highest diagnostic value (AUC=0.929, sensitivity=91.4%, specificity=94.3%, p<0.001), higher than DC sign detection alone. Conclusion The DC sign combined with SUA yielded a high diagnostic value and can thus provide a reliable basis for effectively and efficiently diagnosing GA.

Abstract
Kombucha is a unique fermented beverage made from a symbiotic culture of yeast and bacteria. Kombucha is normally based on black tea added to water, then sugar is added as a substrate for fermentation in this beverage. This unique beverage is composed of amino acids, flavonoids, vitamins, and some active enzymes. Several beneficial health effects such as antioxidant, antimicrobial effects have been reported as a result of probiotics and prebiotics presence. These health effects of kombucha are attributed to its bioactive chemical and biological agents of probiotics bacteria e.g., Gluconobacter, Acetobacter and yeasts like Saccharomyces sps., along with glucuronic acid as the main sources of the health protection. This review focuses on the beneficial effects of Kombucha including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-cancer antidiabetic properties, as well as liver protection, treat of gastrointestinal problems, AIDS, gastric ulcers, obesity (and energy production), detoxification, and skin health.

Abstract
This paper presents an application for a molybdenum disulfide nanomaterial with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MoS2@MWCNT/E) in a modified electrode substrate for the detection of uric acid (UA). The modified electrode generates a substantial three-fold increase in the anodic peak current for UA compared to the unmodified MWCNT electrode (MWCNT/E). The MoS2@MWCNT/E surface was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The achieved detection limit stood at 0.04 µmol/L, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 2.0% (n = 10). The method's accuracy, assessed through relative error and percent recovery, was validated using a urine standard solution spiked with known quantities of UA.

Abstract
Elevated serum uric acid (sUA) is associated with the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). Here, we examined the prognostic significance of sUA and exercise capacity in 411 Japanese adults (age, ≥65; mean, 81 years) hospitalized for worsening CVD. When the patients were stratified by sUA into three groups (<5.3, 5.4-6.9, >7.0 mg/dL), the high-sUA group had a significantly worse peak VO2 and composite endpoint (rehospitalization due to worsening CVD and all-cause mortality) compared with low- and moderate-sUA groups (p < 0.001). When the patients were stratified by sUA into five groups (sUA < 3.9, 4.0-5.9, 6.0-7.9, 8.0-8.9, and >10.0 mg/dL), the incidence of the composite endpoint was significantly higher in the highest sUA group compared with that in the reference group, but only in women. Univariate Cox regression analysis, but not a multivariate analysis, indicated that sUA was significantly associated with the composite endpoint. Although sUA and exercise capacity may have some degree of prognostic significance in older patients with CVD, this significance may differ between men and women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A growing evidence on the correlation between hyperuricemia and cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been previously reported. However, there have been limited data on the impact of hyperuricemia on long-term clinical outcomes in patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI) who underwent percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA). METHODS A total of 425 peripheral artery disease patients who underwent PTA for CLI were enrolled. The patients were divided into the hyperuricemia group (n = 101) and the normal group (n = 324). The primary endpoint was major adverse cerebral and cardiovascular event (MACCE), including death, myocardial infarction, any coronary revascularization, and stroke, up to 5 years. The secondary endpoint was a major adverse limb event (MALE), including any repeated PTA, and target extremity surgery. Inverse probability weighting (IPTW) analysis, derived from the logistic regression model, was performed to adjust for potential confounders. RESULTS After IPTW matching analysis, compared to the normal group, the hyperuricemia group was associated with a higher incidence of MACCE (20.7% vs. 13.6%, hazard ratio [HR], 1.65; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.15-2.38, P = 0.006) including non-cardiac death (11.7% vs. 6.3%, HR: 1.95, 95% CI: 1.19-3.19, P = 0.006) and MALE (47.7% vs. 36.0%, HR: 1.62, 95% CI: 1.23-2.13, P = 0.001) including non-target extremity revascularization (15.0% vs. 6.8%, HR: 2.42, 95% CI: 1.52-3.84, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION In the present study, hyperuricemia was associated with worse clinical outcomes in patients with CLI following PTA during 5-year clinical follow-up. Efficacy of controlling hyperuricemia in improving clinical outcomes should be evaluated in further studies.

Abstract
Background: A diet high in purines can impair the function of the gut microbiota and disrupt purine metabolism, which is closely associated with the onset of hyperuricemia. Dietary regulation and intestinal health maintenance are key approaches for controlling uric acid (UA) levels. Investigating the impacts of fermented foods offers potential dietary interventions for managing hyperuricemia. Methods: In this study, we isolated a strain with potent UA-degrading capabilities from "Jiangshui", a fermented food product from Gansu, China. We performed strain identification and assessed its probiotic potential. Hyperuricemic quails, induced by a high-purine diet, were used to assess the UA degradation capability of strain JS-3 by measuring UA levels in serum and feces. Additionally, the UA degradation pathways were elucidated through analyses of the gut microbiome and fecal metabolomics. Results: JS-3, identified as Lacticaseibacillus paracasei, was capable of eliminating 16.11% of uric acid (UA) within 72 h, rapidly proliferating and producing acid within 12 h, and surviving in the gastrointestinal tract. Using hyperuricemic quail models, we assessed JS-3's UA degradation capacity. Two weeks after the administration of JS-3 (2 × 108 cfu/d per quail), serum uric acid (SUA) levels significantly decreased to normal levels, and renal damage in quails was markedly improved. Concurrently, feces from the JS-3 group demonstrated a significant degradation of UA, achieving up to 49% within 24 h. 16S rRNA sequencing revealed JS-3's role in gut microbiota restoration by augmenting the probiotic community (Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides unclassified_f-Lachnospiraceae, and norank_fynorank_o-Clostridia_UCG-014) and diminishing the pathogenic bacteria (Macrococus and Lactococcus). Corresponding with the rise in short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria, JS-3 significantly increased SCFA levels (p < 0.05, 0.01). Additionally, JS-3 ameliorated metabolic disturbances in hyperuricemic quails, influencing 26 abnormal metabolites predominantly linked to purine, tryptophan, and bile acid metabolism, thereby enhancing UA degradation and renal protection. Conclusions: For the first time, we isolated and identified an active probiotic strain, JS-3, from the "Jiangshui" in Gansu, used for the treatment of hyperuricemia. It modulates host-microbiome interactions, impacts the metabolome, enhances intestinal UA degradation, reduces levels of SUA and fecal UA, alleviates renal damage, and effectively treats hyperuricemia without causing gastrointestinal damage. In summary, JS-3 can serve as a probiotic with potential therapeutic value for the treatment of hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Alumina inorganic molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on a glassy carbon electrode (MWCNTs-Al2O3-MIP/GCE) was firstly designed and fabricated by one-step electro deposition technique for the detection of uric acid (UA) in sweat. The UA templates were embedded within the inorganic MIP by co-deposition with Al2O3. Through the evaluation of morphology and structure by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), it was verified that the specific recognition sites can be fabricated in the electrodeposited Al2O3 molecular imprinted layer. Due to the high selectivity of molecular imprinting holes, the MWCNTs-Al2O3-MIP/GCE electrode demonstrated an impressive imprinting factor of approximately 2.338 compared to the non-molecularly imprinted glassy carbon electrode (MWCNTs-Al2O3-NIP/GCE) toward uric acid detection. Moreover, it exhibited a remarkable limit of detection (LOD) of 50 nM for UA with wide detection range from 50 nM to 600 μM. The MWCNTs-Al2O3-MIP/GCE electrode also showed strong interference resistance against common substances found in sweat. These results highlight the excellent interference resistance and selectivity of MWCNTs-Al2O3-MIP/GCE sensor, positioning it as a novel sensing platform for non-invasive uric acid detection in human sweat.

Abstract
With the development of social economy, the incidence of gout is increasing, which is closely related to people's increasingly rich diet. Eating a diet high in purine, fat, sugar and low-fibre for a long time further aggravates gout by affecting uric acid metabolism. The renal metabolism mechanism of uric acid has been thoroughly studied. To find a new treatment method for gout, increasing studies have recently been conducted on the mechanism of intestinal excretion, metabolism and absorption of uric acid. The most important research is the relationship between intestinal microbiota and the risk of gout. Gut microbiota represent bacteria that reside in a host's gastrointestinal tract. The composition of the gut microbiota is associated with protection against pathogen colonization and disease occurrence. This review focuses on how gut microbiota affects gout through uric acid and discusses the types of bacteria that may be involved in the occurrence and progression of gout. We also describe potential therapy for gout by restoring gut microbiota homeostasis and reducing uric acid levels. We hold the perspective that changing intestinal microbiota may become a vital method for effectively preventing or treating gout.

Abstract
One of the hallmarks of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is inflammation of the synovial membrane, and oxidative stress is a mediator of tissue damage. RA is characterized by persistent joint inflammation, which leads to pain, edema, and finally joint destruction. Numerous biochemical markers can cause RA because of their impact on systemic and local inflammation. Numerous biomarkers have been investigated for their potential application in the diagnosis and prognosis of RA. In this review article, we evaluate the role of RA factor or rheumatoid factor (RF), uric acid, C-reactive protein (CRP), and adenosine deaminases (ADAs) as biomarkers in patients with and without arthritis. Studies that analyze and compare the levels of uric acid, ADAs, CRP, and RF in patients with and without arthritis. Although recent research has shown higher levels of uric acid, ADA, CRP, and RA in patients with RF compared to healthy controls, these findings may indicate a role for these markers in reflecting inflammation and disease activity. In the metabolism of purines, the enzyme ADA is involved. The liver produces CRP, which is then released into the bloodstream. In inflammatory situations, there is a rise in CRP levels. This biomarker is frequently used for systemic inflammatory assessment in RA. The pathophysiology and severity of RA have both been connected to uric acid, which has historically been linked to gout. One particular biomarker for RA is RF. When compared to a healthy control group of individuals with arthritis, this review provides valuable insights into the diagnostic and prognostic use of uric acid, CRP, ADAs, and RF.

Abstract
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common cause of non-traumatic long-term disability in young adults. Whole-body cryostimulation (WBC) is a cold-based physical therapy known to induce physiological exercise-mimicking changes in the cardiovascular, neuromuscular, immune, and endocrine systems and to influence functional and psychological parameters by exposing the human body to cryogenic temperatures (≤-110 °C) for 2-3 min. The purpose of this scoping review is to present an overall view on the potential role of WBC as an adjuvant therapy in the treatment of MS. PubMed, ScienceDirect, Embase, and Web of Science were searched up to 30 November 2023, and a total of 13 articles were included. WBC may have beneficial antioxidant effects as a short-term adjuvant treatment in MS. There were no significant changes in antioxidant enzymes, nitric oxide levels, metalloproteinase levels, blood counts, rheology, and biochemistry. WBC can lead to a reduction in fatigue and an improvement in functional status, with a significant effect on both mental and physical well-being. There were no reported adverse effects. The results suggest that WBC may complement therapeutic options for patients with MS, as the effects of cryogenic cold stimulation have been shown to activate antioxidant processes and improve functional status, mood, anxiety, and fatigue.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia is characterized by elevated blood uric acid (UA) levels, which can lead to certain diseases. Epidemiological studies have explored the association between environmental contaminant exposure and hyperuricemia. However, few studies have investigated the role of chemical exposure in the development of hyperuricemia. Here, we sought to investigate the effects of bisphenol exposure on the occurrence of hyperuricemia. Fifteen bisphenol chemicals (BPs) were detected in human serum and urine samples collected from an area with a high incidence of hyperuricemia in China. Serum UA levels positively correlated with urinary bisphenol S (BPS), urinary bisphenol P (BPP), and serum bisphenol F (BPF). The effects of these three chemicals on UA levels in mice were explored at various exposure concentrations. An increase in serum UA levels was observed in BPS- and BPP-exposed mice. The results showed that BPS exposure increased serum UA levels by damaging the structure of the kidneys, whereas BPP exposure increased serum UA levels by disturbing purine metabolism in the liver. Moreover, BPF did not induce an increase in serum UA levels owing to the inhibition of guanine conversion to UA. In summary, we provide evidence of the mechanisms whereby exposure to three BPs disturbs UA homeostasis. These findings provide new insights into the risks of exposure to bisphenol chemicals.

Abstract
The association between hyperuricemia and cardiovascular diseases has been studied for many years. Research has shown a link between high uric acid levels and increased risk of including coronary artery disease hypertension and other cardiovascular conditions. Urate-lowering therapy, particularly with xanthine oxidase inhibitors like allopurinol, has shown promising results in reducing blood pressure in individuals with hyperuricemia and hypertension. Clinical trials and studies have demonstrated significant reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure with urate-lowering treatment. Urate-lowering treatment has shown a favorable effect on reducing systolic blood pressure and major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with previous cardiovascular disease. In terms of cardiovascular safety, clinical trials have indicated that xanthine oxidase inhibitors such as febuxostat are non-inferior to allopurinol and do not increase the risk of death or serious adverse events. Overall, these findings highlight the importance of managing hyperuricemia and utilizing urate-lowering therapy to mitigate the adverse cardiovascular effects associated with elevated uric acid levels.

Abstract
Preeclampsia, a hypertensive disorder unique to pregnancy, remains a significant cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and uric acid have garnered attention as potential biomarkers in understanding preeclampsia's pathophysiology and clinical management. Elevated LDH and uric acid levels have been associated with disease severity and adverse outcomes, highlighting their potential utility in risk stratification and guiding management strategies. This comprehensive review explores the roles of LDH and uric acid in preeclampsia, summarizing current evidence regarding their diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic implications. Future research directions are also discussed, including understanding and validation studies. Integrating LDH and uric acid measurements into routine clinical practice may facilitate early detection and intervention, ultimately improving outcomes for preeclamptic pregnancies. This review underscores the importance of serum biomarkers in enhancing our understanding and managing preeclampsia, aiming to optimize maternal and fetal health.

Abstract
We present the preparation of CoCu bimetallic nanoclusters (Co@Cu-BNCs) by a hydrothermal and one-step pyrolysis method to build a colorimetric and electrochemical dual-mode sensing platform for uric acid (UA) detection. In the presence of H2O2, Co@Cu-BNCs with peroxidase-mimicking activity may convert colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue-colored oxidized TMB (oxTMB). However, due to the inhibitory effect of uric acid (UA) on the oxidation process of TMB, the characteristic absorption peak intensity of oxTMB decreased when UA was added into a mixed solution. In this approach, a colorimetric assay platform for the detection of UA was demonstrated, with a linear range of 0.1-195 μM and a low limit of detection of 0.06 μM (S/N ratio of 3). In addition, an even wider detection range is achieved in the electrochemical method, due to the pronounced electrocatalytic activity of Co@Cu-BNCs. The surface of the glassy carbon electrode was modified with Co@Cu-BNCs to build an electrochemical sensor for detecting UA. The sensor achieves a wider linear range from 2 to 1000 μM and a limit of detection of 0.61 μM (S/N ratio of 3). Moreover, the detection of UA in a human serum sample showed satisfactory results. The results proved that the colorimetric and electrochemical dual-mode detection platform was sensitive, convenient and accurate.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS Schizophrenia involves microstructural changes in white matter (WM) tracts. Oxidative stress is a key factor causing WM damage by hindering oligodendrocyte development and myelin maturation. Uric acid (UA), an endogenous antioxidant, may protect against oxidative stress. We investigated the effect of UA on WM connectivity in antipsychotic-naive or -free patients with early- or chronic-stage schizophrenia. STUDY DESIGN A total of 192 patients with schizophrenia (122 recent-onset [ROS] and 70 chronic [CS]) and 107 healthy controls (HCs) participated in this study. Diffusion tensor imaging data and serum UA levels at baseline were obtained. STUDY RESULTS Fractional anisotropy was lower in the widespread WM regions across the whole brain, and diffusivity measures were higher in both schizophrenia groups than in HCs. The CS group showed lower diffusivity in some WM tracts than the ROS or HC groups. The linear relationship of serum UA levels with axial and mean diffusivity in the right frontal region was significantly different between schizophrenia stages, which was driven by a negative association in the CS group. WM diffusivity associated with serum UA levels correlated with 8-week treatment responses only in patients with CS, suggesting UA to be protective against long-term schizophrenia. CONCLUSIONS UA may protect against the WM damage associated with the progression of schizophrenia by reducing oxidative stress and supporting WM repair against oxidative damage. These results provide insights into the positive role of UA and may facilitate the development of novel disease-modifying therapies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperuricemia has placed an immense burden on the global healthcare system. Studies have discovered a close correlation between serum uric acid (SUA) and insulin resistance (IR). The objective of this investigation is to examine the association between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, a simple surrogate for IR, and the presence of hyperuricemia. METHODS Between 2017 and 2021, an epidemiologic study was conducted on Royal Thai Army (RTA) personnel aged 35-60 years, involving a total of 231,286 participants. In the study, hyperuricemia was defined as a SUA level of 7 mg/dL and 6 mg/dL among male and female participants, respectively. Using linear regression analysis and logistic regression analysis, the association between the TyG index and SUA was determined. RESULTS A positive relationship was demonstrated between the TyG index and the SUA. Overall, SUA increased by 0.32 per unit of TyG index growth (95% CI: 0.31-0.32). In comparison with the first quartile, employees in the fourth TyG quartile had a greater likelihood of having hyperuricemia [adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 2.45, 95% CI: 2.38-2.52]. Effect modification by obesity on the association between the TyG index and SUA was observed (P-interaction < 0.001). Among individuals with obesity, compared with the first TyG index quartile, the AOR for hyperuricemia was 2.15 (95% CI: 2.06-2.25) and 2.14 (95% CI: 1.81-2.53) for the fourth quartile of the TyG index for males and females, respectively. However, for nonobese personnel, in comparison to the top quartile of the TyG index, the AOR for hyperuricemia was 2.73 (95% CI:2.61-2.84) and 5.03 (95% CI: 4.03-6.29) for the fourth quartile of the TyG index for males and females, respectively. Personnel in the fourth TyG index quartile revealed that the prevalence of hyperuricemia reached 44.2%. CONCLUSION A robust positive association between the TyG index and SUA was illustrated among active-duty RTA personnel. Obesity was identified as a modifier influencing this relationship. Furthermore, individuals in the fourth quarter of the TyG index, regardless of their obesity status, could be considered appropriate candidates for screening SUA levels.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and ischemic stroke in young patients in the Ganzi Tibetan plateau area. Methods A cross-sectional survey was undertaken from January 2020 to June 2023 involving young patients (age: 15-45 years) diagnosed with ischemic stroke. The survey was conducted at the Department of Internal Medicine of the People's Hospital of Derong County, Ganzi Prefecture. The participants underwent a comprehensive assessment, including questionnaire surveys, physical examinations, laboratory tests, and head computed tomography (CT) examinations. Based on the tertiles of serum uric acid (SUA) levels, the patients were stratified into three groups. Furthermore, stroke severity was classified into mild (1-4 points), moderate (5-15 points), and severe (>15 points) categories using the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale. Results The severe stroke group exhibited higher levels of age, glucose, systolic blood pressure, serum triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and serum uric acid (SUA) compared to the mild stroke group (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the likelihood of male sex, advanced age, smoking, and a family history of stroke, diabetes mellitus, and heart disease were significantly elevated in the severe stroke group compared to the moderate stroke group (P < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis conducted on young adults residing in highland areas revealed a significant association between SUA levels and the risk of stroke. Conclusion Elevated SUA levels serve as a distinct risk factor for the development of a major stroke in young patients in highland areas. At SUA levels of 320.56 mol/L, the risk of a moderate-to-severe stroke is noticeably elevated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperuricemia has been linked to various health conditions. However, the relationship between uric acid (UA) levels and lung function remains debated. METHODS In a cross-sectional study of 6750 participants aged 20-69 from NHANES, we assessed UA levels and lung function (FVC and FEV1). We conducted regression analyses while adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS After accounting for factors like age, sex, BMI, smoking, and more, we found a negative association between UA FVC and FEV1. Specifically, for every 0.1 mg/dL increase in UA, FEV1 decreased by 15.265 mL, and FVC decreased by 24.46 mL. No association was observed with FEV1/FVC. Subgroup analyses revealed similar negative correlations among various groups, particularly in non-Hispanic Black females under 60. CONCLUSION Serum UA levels are inversely associated with FEV1 and FVC in the American population, with a notable impact on non-Hispanic Black females under 60.

Abstract
In this paper, we present demographic, clinical, anamnestic, cognitive, and functional data, as well as haematological, haematochemical, immunological, and genetic parameters of an exceptional individual: A.T., a semi-supercentenarian who held the title of the oldest living Italian male centenarian from 28 December 2020, to 23 September 2021. The purpose of this study is to provide fresh insights into extreme phenotypes, with a particular focus on immune-inflammatory parameters. To the best of our knowledge, this study represents the first phenotypic investigation of a semi-supercentenarian, illustrating both INFLA-score, a metric designed to assess the cumulative impact of inflammatory markers and indicators of age-related immune phenotype (ARIP), recognized as significant gauges of biological ageing. The aim of this study was, indeed, to advance our understanding of the role of immune-inflammatory responses in achieving extreme longevity. The results of laboratory tests, as well as clinical history and interview data, when compared to the results of our recent study on Sicilian centenarians, demonstrate an excellent state of health considering his age. Consistent with previous studies, we observed increased IL-6 inflammatory markers and INFLA score in A.T. More interestingly, the semi-supercentenarian showed values of ARIP indicators such as naïve CD4+ cells, CD4+/CD8+ ratio, and CD4+TN/TM ratio in the range of young adult individuals, suggesting that his immune system's biological age was younger than the chronological one. The results support the notion that the immune system can play a role in promoting extreme longevity. However, this does not rule out the involvement of other body systems or organs in achieving extreme longevity.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the correlations between thyroid function, renal function, and depression. Methods Clinical data of 67 patients with Major depressive disorder (MDD) and 36 healthy control subjects between 2018 and 2021 were collected to compare thyroid and renal function. Thyroid and renal functions of depressed patients were then correlated with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA).Spearman correlation analysis was used to find the correlation between renal function, thyroid function, and depression. A logistic regression was performed to find significant predictors of depression. Results Triiodothyronine protamine (T3), thyroxine (T4), free triiodothyronine protamine (FT3), uric acid, sodium, and anion gap were lower in the MDD group than in the control group (p < 0.05). Correlation analysis of thyroid function, renal function, and factor terms of HAMD in the MDD group suggested that diurnal variation, hopelessness, and depression level were positively correlated with thyrotropin (TSH) (p < 0.05). Cognitive disturbance, retardation, and depression level were negatively correlated with creatinine (p < 0.05). Diurnal variation was negatively correlated with sodium ion (p < 0.01); hopelessness and depression level were positively correlated with chloride ion (p < 0.05); diurnal variation, retardation, and depression level were negatively correlated with anion gap (p < 0.05). Diurnal variation (p < 0.01) and retardation (p < 0.05) were negatively correlated with osmolality. Cognitive disturbance and depression level were positively correlated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (p < 0.05). In the MDD group, correlation analysis of thyroid function, renal function, and HAMA factor terms suggested that the total HAMA score and anxiety level were positively correlated with chloride ion (p < 0.05); psychic anxiety, total HAMA score, and anxiety level were negatively correlated with anion gap (p < 0.05). Furthermore, a low level of anion gap was an independent risk factor for depression and anxiety levels (p < 0.05). Conclusion Low thyroid function and reduced waste metabolized by the kidneys in patients with MDD suggest a low intake and low metabolism in depressed patients. In addition, subtle fluctuations in the anion gap in depressed patients were strongly correlated with the degree of depression and anxiety.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The increasing prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors (CRFs) contributes to the rise in cardiovascular disease. Previous research has established a connection between air pollution and both the development and severity of CRFs. Given the ongoing impact of air pollution on human health, this review aims to summarize the latest research findings and provide an overview of the relationship between different types of air pollutants and CRFs. RECENT FINDINGS CRFs include health conditions like diabetes, obesity, hypertension etc. Air pollution poses significant health risks and encompasses a wide range of pollutant types, air pollutants, such as particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone (O2). More and more population epidemiological studies have shown a positive correlation between air pollution and CRFs. Although various pollutants have diverse effects on specific cellular molecular pathways, their main influence is on oxidative stress, inflammation response, and impairment of endothelial function. More and more studies have proved that air pollution can promote the occurrence and development of cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors, and the research on the relationship between air pollution and CRFs has grown intensively. An increasing number of studies are using new biological monitoring indicators to assess the occurrence and development of CRFs resulting from exposure to air pollution. Abnormalities in some important biomarkers in the population (such as homocysteine, uric acid, and C-reactive protein) caused by air pollution deserve more attention. Further research is warranted to more fully understand the link between air pollution and novel CRF biomarkers and to investigate potential prevention and interventions that leverage the mechanistic link between air pollution and CRFs.

Abstract
PROBLEM Prior results on the association between serum uric acid (UA) levels in the early trimester and the risk of small for gestational age (SGA) remain unclear. This study evaluated the association of maternal first-, second-, and third-trimester UA levels with the risk of SGA infants. METHOD OF STUDY A total of 23, 194 singleton mothers from the International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital between January 2014 and January 2017 were included. Maternal UA levels were measured at 12.1 ± 1.08th (UA1) and 32.2 ± 1.03th (UA2) gestational weeks. △UA was calculated as the difference between UA2 and UA1. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were performed to evaluate the association between maternal UA and △UA during pregnancy and SGA. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was employed to assess the serum uric acid prediction value. RESULTS Women in the higher quartiles of UA1 had a significantly higher risk of SGA. A clear increased risk for SGA was observed with higher quartiles for UA2 (p for trend <0.05). An approximately "J-shaped" relationship was observed between UA2 and △UA, and the risk of SGA was observed. When compared with those with a lower level of UA in the first trimester, those with a higher level of UA1, the more increase in the later UA levels were associated with a higher risk of SGA [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.67, 95% CI:1.37-2.05]. The ROC curve areas were 0.525 for UA1, 0.582 for UA2 and 0.576 for △UA. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggested that non-preeclamptic and non-hypertensive women who experienced early pregnancy with high UA levels had an elevated risk of SGA. Moreover, a high maternal UA level in the earlier trimester may be an early predictor of SGA.

Changes in lifestyle induce an increase in patients with hyperuricemia (HUA), leading to gout, gouty arthritis, renal damage, and cardiovascular injury. There is a strong inflammatory response in the process of HUA, while dysregulation of immune cells, including monocytes, macrophages, and T cells, plays a crucial role in the inflammatory response. Recent studies have indicated that urate has a direct impact on immune cell populations, changes in cytokine expression, modifications in chemotaxis and differentiation, and the provocation of immune cells by intrinsic cells to cause the aforementioned conditions. Here we conducted a detailed review of the relationship among uric acid, immune response, and inflammatory status in hyperuricemia and its complications, providing new therapeutic targets and strategies.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the dynamic changes of metabolite composition in rat supraspinatus tendons at different stages of diabetes by untargeted metabolomics analysis. Methods A total of 80 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into normal (NG, n = 20) and type 2 diabetes mellitus groups (T2DM, n = 60) and subdivided into three groups according to the duration of diabetes: T2DM-4w, T2DM-12w, and T2DM-24w groups; the duration was calculated from the time point of T2DM rat model establishment. The three comparison groups were set up in this study, T2DM-4w group vs. NG, T2DM-12w group vs. T2DM-4w group, and T2DM-24w group vs. T2DM-12w group. The metabolite profiles of supraspinatus tendon were obtained using tandem mass spectrometry. Metabolomics multivariate statistics were used for metabolic data analysis and differential metabolite (DEM) determination. The intersection of the three comparison groups' DEMs was defined as key metabolites that changed consistently in the supraspinatus tendon after diabetes induction; then, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis was performed. Results T2DM-4w group vs. NG, T2DM-12w group vs. T2DM-4w group, and T2DM-24w group vs. T2DM-12w group detected 94 (86 up-regulated and 8 down-regulated), 36 (13 up-regulated and 23 down-regulated) and 86 (24 up-regulated and 62 down-regulated) DEMs, respectively. Seven key metabolites of sustained changes in the supraspinatus tendon following induction of diabetes include D-Lactic acid, xanthine, O-acetyl-L-carnitine, isoleucylproline, propoxycarbazone, uric acid, and cytidine, which are the first identified biomarkers of the supraspinatus tendon as it progresses through the course of diabetes. The results of KEGG pathway enrichment analysis showed that the main pathway of supraspinatus metabolism affected by diabetes (p < 0.05) was purine metabolism. The results of the KEGG metabolic pathway vs. DEMs correlation network graph revealed that uric acid and xanthine play a role in more metabolic pathways. Conclusion Untargeted metabolomics revealed the dynamic changes of metabolite composition in rat supraspinatus tendons at different stages of diabetes, and the newly discovered seven metabolites, especially uric acid and xanthine, may provide novel research to elucidate the mechanism of diabetes-induced tendinopathy.

Abstract
Xanthine oxidase, a molybdo-flavoenzyme, and an isoform of xanthine dehydrogenase both exist as xanthine oxidoreductase and are responsible for purine catabolism. Xanthine oxidase is more involved in pathological conditions when extensively modulated. Elevation of xanthine oxidase is not only the prime cause of gout but is also responsible for various hyperuricemia associated pathological conditions like diabetes, chronic wounds, cardiovascular disorders, Alzheimer's disease, etc. Currently available xanthine oxidase inhibitors in clinical practice (allopurinol, febuxostat and topiroxostat) suffer from fatal side effects that pose a serious problem to the healthcare system, raising global emergency to develop novel, potent and safer xanthine oxidase inhibitors. This review will provide key and systematic information about: a. design strategies (inspired from both marketed drugs in clinical practice and natural products), structural insights and pharmacological output (xanthine oxidase inhibition and associated activities) of various pre-clinical candidates reported by various research groups across the globe in the past two decades; b. patented xanthine oxidase inhibitors published in the last three decades and c. clinical trials and their outcomes on approved drug candidates. Information generated in this review has suggested fragment-based drug design (FBDD) and molecular hybridization techniques to be most suitable for development of desired xanthine oxidase inhibitors as one provides high selectivity toward the enzyme and the other imparts multifunctional properties to the structure and both may possess capabilities to surpass the limitations of currently available clinical drugs. All in combination will exclusively update researchers working on xanthine oxidase inhibitors and allied areas and potentially help in designing rational, novel, potent and safer xanthine oxidase inhibitors that can effectively tackle xanthine oxidase related disease conditions and disorders.

Abstract
Introduction Obesity during childhood is a serious and growing chronic disease with consequences for lifelong health. In an effort to advance research into the preclinical indicators of pediatric obesity, we examined longitudinal assessments of uric acid concentrations in saliva among a cohort of healthy children from age 6-months to 12-years (n's per assessment range from 294 to 727). Methods Using data from a subsample of participants from the Family Life Project (an Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes Program cohort), we: (1) characterized salivary uric acid (sUA) concentrations from infancy to early adolescence by sex and race; (2) assessed changes in sUA levels across development; and (3) evaluated associations between sUA concentrations and measures of child weight, height, and body mass index (BMI). Across four assessments conducted at 6-, 24-, 90-, and 154-months of age, 2,000 saliva samples were assayed for UA from 781 participants (217 participants had sUA data at all assessments). Results There were no significant differences in sUA concentrations by sex at any assessment, and differences in sUA concentrations between White and non-White children varied by age. At the 90- and 154-month assessments, sUA concentrations were positively correlated with measures of child weight, height, and BMI (90-month: weight- ρ(610) = 0.13, p < 0.01; height- ρ(607) = 0.10, p < 0.05; BMI- ρ(604) = 0.13, p < 0.01; 154-month: weight- ρ(723) = 0.18, p < 0.0001; height- ρ(721) = 0.10, p < 0.01; BMI- ρ(721) = 0.17, p < 0.0001). Group based trajectory modeling identified two groups of children in our sample with distinct patterns of sUA developmental change. The majority (72%) of participants showed no significant changes in sUA across time ("Stable" group), while 28% showed increases in sUA across childhood with steep increases from the 90- to 154-month assessments ("Increasing" group). Children in the Increasing group exhibited higher sUA concentrations at all assessments (6-month: t(215) = -5.71, p < 0.001; 24-month: t(215) = -2.89, p < 0.01; 90-month: t(215) = -3.89, p < 0.001; 154-month: t(215) = -19.28, p < 0.001) and higher weight at the 24- and 90-month assessments (24-month: t(214) = -2.37, p < 0.05; 90-month: t(214) = -2.73, p < 0.01). Discussion Our findings support the potential utility of sUA as a novel, minimally-invasive biomarker that may help advance understanding of the mechanisms underlying obesity as well as further surveillance and monitoring efforts for pediatric obesity on a large-scale.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) combined with hyperuricemia remitted 1 year after CRC surgery. CRC patients combined with hyperuricemia who underwent radical surgery were included from a single clinical center from Jan 2016 to Dec 2021. Baseline characteristics was compared between the remission group and the non-remission group. Multivariate logistic regression was used to find the possible predictive factors of hyperuricemia remission. A total of 91 patients were included for data analysis, retrospectively. There were 34 (37.4%) patients in the remission group and 57 (62.6%) patients in the non-remission group. The mean preoperative weight and body mass index (BMI) were 61.2 ± 10.7 (kg) and 24.1 ± 3.3 (kg/m2). 21 (23.1%) patients had a history of drinking. We found that the weight and BMI were not significantly different before and 1 year after CRC surgery (P > 0.05). In contrast, uric acid values were significantly decreased (P < 0.01). Meanwhile, the outcomes showed there were no significant differences in the baseline characteristics between the remission and non-remission groups (P > 0.05). According to multivariate logistic regression, we found that the history of drinking was a predictive factor of hyperuricemia remission (OR = 0.046, 95% CI 0.005-0.475, P = 0.010). CRC patients with hyperuricemia had a 37.4% remission from hyperuricemia 1 year after CRC surgery. Tumor location, tumor stage, and tumor size did not predict the remission of hyperuricemia. Notably, the history of drinking was a predictive factor of hyperuricemia remission.

Abstract
Fiber-type electronics is a crucial field for realizing wearable electronic devices with a wide range of sensing applications. In this paper, we begin by discussing the fabrication of fibers from conjugated polymers. We then explore the utilization of these fibers in the development of field-effect and electrochemical transistors. Finally, we investigate the diverse applications of these fiber-type transistors, encompassing chemical and physical sensors. Our paper aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of the use of conjugated polymers in fiber-type transistor-based sensors.

Abstract
The escalating number of patients affected by various diseases, such as gout, attributed to abnormal uric acid (UA) concentrations in body fluids, has underscored the need for rapid, efficient, highly sensitive, and stable UA detection methods and sensors. Optical sensors have garnered significant attention due to their simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and resistance to electromagnetic interference. Notably, research efforts have been directed towards UA on-site detection, enabling daily monitoring at home and facilitating rapid disease screening in the community. This review aims to systematically categorize and provide detailed descriptions of the notable achievements and emerging technologies in UA optical sensors over the past five years. The review highlights the advantages of each sensor while also identifying their limitations in on-site applications. Furthermore, recent progress in instrumentation and the application of UA on-site detection in body fluids is discussed, along with the existing challenges and prospects for future development. The review serves as an informative resource, offering technical insights and promising directions for future research in the design and application of on-site optical sensors for UA detection.

Abstract
The objective was to compare and analyze the relationship between growth, purine content, uric acid, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in purebred and crossbred Thai native chickens. A total of 300 Thai native chickens were divided into 3 groups. Group 1 was purebred Thai native chickens (100%TN), Group 2 was 50% Thai native chickens (50%TN), and Group 3 was 25% Thai native chickens (25%TN). Data included the body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), and breast circumference (BrC). At 6, 8, and 10 weeks of age, 10 chickens from each group were randomly euthanized to collect breast meat, liver, and blood samples to analyze the purine content consisting of total purine, adenine, guanine, xanthine, and hypoxanthine, and uric acid, in breast meat and liver and SOD in blood. A general linear model, Pearson correlation and principal component analysis were used to analyze the significant differences and relationship between variables. The results showed the 25%TN group had the highest growth traits at every age, while the 100%TN group had the lowest (p < 0.05). Consistent with the analysis results of purine values, purine content and uric acid in breast meat and liver and SOD in blood decreased with age (p < 0.05). The correlations between purine content (total purine, adenine, guanine, xanthine, and hypoxanthine) and growth traits (BW, ADG, and BrC) ranged from moderate negative to moderate positive (-0.542 to 0.253)(p < 0.05). The correlations between uric acid and growth traits (0.348-0.760) and SOD and growth traits (0.132-0.516) were low to moderate positive with significant differences (p < 0.05). The principal component plot, which highlighted three principal components (PC 1, PC 2, and PC 3), explained 86.44 and 86.53% of the total information in breast meat and liver for selecting animals for optimal balance of the variation in the growth traits, purine content, uric acid, and SOD. Although purebred Thai native chickens showed the lowest growth traits, purine content, uric acid, and SOD were also lowest compared to crossbred Thai native chickens. Therefore, the development of genetics in Thai native chickens to produce healthy food could be possible.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia, the metabolic alteration that leads to gout or gouty arthritis, is increasing worldwide. Glycoconjugated triazole-phthalimides show potent anti-inflammatory activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-hyperuricemia effect of glycoconjugated triazole-phthalimides. To develop hyperuricemia, groups of mice received orally potassium oxonate (250 mg/kg) for 7 days, and F2, F3 and F4 glycoconjugated triazole-phthalimides (20 mg/kg), allopurinol (300 mg/kg), and 1% carboxymethylcellulose; indomethacin (2 and 4 mg/kg) was the positive control for anti-arthritic effect. Genotoxic and mutagenic effects were evaluated by the comet and micronucleus assays, respectively. The hemolytic action of the compounds was evaluated. Phthalimides F2, F3 and F4 significantly reduced the levels of serum uric acid, creatinine and urea in hyperuricemic animals. In addition, the compounds were efficient in reducing protein denaturation in a dose-dependent manner. In an interesting way, the histopathological analysis of kidneys from groups treated with F2, F3 and F4 showed a glomerular architecture, with the Bowman's capsule and renal tubules having a normal appearance and without inflammatory changes. Also, F2 and F4 showed a small increase in micronuclei, indicating a low mutagenic effect, whilst by comet assay only, we could infer that F4 affected the frequency and damage index, thus indicating a very small genotoxic action. Similarly, the phthalimides showed a low degree of erythrocyte hemolysis (<3%). Our data demonstrate that the new glycoconjugate triazole-phthalimides have potential to treat hyperuricemia and its secondary complications, such as gouty arthritis, with a low to non-significant rate of erythrocytes hemolysis, genotoxicity and mutagenicity making these molecules strong candidates as pharmaceutical agents for treatment requiring uric-acid-lowering therapy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION As the population ages, the incidence of osteoporosis among patients suffering from Parkinson's disease (PD) will surge continually, and the ensuing disability from falls is becoming a serious social burden. Due to its antioxidant properties, much literature has indicated the possible ability of serum uric acid (UA) to prevent ageing-related diseases caused by oxidative stress, including osteoporosis and PD. Therefore, this study was for exploring the connection of serum UA levels with bone mineral density (BMD) and the osteoporosis presence in Chinese PD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional design was used to statistically analyze 42 clinical parameters obtained from 135 patients with PD treated in Wuhan Tongji Hospital during 2020-2022. Multiple stepwise linear regression and multiple logistic regression analyses were constructed for identifying the association of serum UA levels with BMD as well as osteoporosis in PD patients, respectively. With receiver operative characteristic (ROC) curves, the optimal cutoff value was acquired for serum UA in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. RESULTS According to the regression analysis adjusted for confounders, serum UA levels in PD patients had positive correlation with BMD at each site and negative correlation with the presence of osteoporosis (P < 0.05 for all). ROC curves determined that the optimal cutoff value for UA to perform well in diagnosing osteoporosis in PD patients was 284.27 μmol/L (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Relatively higher serum UA levels in the physiological range can work as a biomarker of higher BMD, and were strongly linked to lower prevalence of osteoporosis in Chinese PD patients.

Abstract
AIMS To pool the effects of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors on gout and to investigate the association of these effects with baseline serum uric acid (SUA), SUA lowering, and underlying conditions, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)/heart failure (HF). METHODS PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and clinical trial registry websites were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or post hoc analyses (≥1-year duration; PROSPERO:CRD42023418525). The primary outcome was a composite of gouty arthritis/gout flares and commencement of anti-gout drugs (SUA-lowering drugs/colchicine). Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were pooled using a generic inverse-variance method with a random-effects model. Mixed-effects model univariate meta-regression analysis was performed. RESULTS Five RCTs involving 29 776 patients (T2DM, n = 23 780) and 1052 gout-related events were identified. Compared to placebo, SGLT2 inhibitor use was significantly associated with reduced risk of composite gout outcomes (HR 0.55, 95% CI 0.45-0.67; I2 = 61%, P < 0.001). Treatment benefits did not differ between trials being conducted exclusively in baseline HF versus those conducted in patients with T2DM (P-interaction = 0.37), but were greater with dapagliflozin 10 mg and canagliflozin 100/300 mg (P < 0.01 for subgroup differences). Sensitivity analysis excluding trials that evaluated the effects of empagliflozin 10/25 mg (HR 0.68, 95% CI 0.57-0.81; I2 = 0%) accentuated the benefits of SGLT2 inhibitors with no between-trial heterogeneity (HR 0.46, 95% CI 0.39-0.55; I2 = 0%). Univariate meta-regression found no impact of baseline SUA, SUA lowering on follow-up, diuretic use, or other variables on their anti-gout effects. CONCLUSION We found that SGLT2 inhibitors significantly reduced the risk of gout in individuals with T2DM/HF. Lack of an association with SUA-lowering effects suggests that metabolic and anti-inflammatory effects of SGLT2 inhibitors may predominantly mediate their anti-gout benefits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The validity of high uric acid levels as an independent cause of stroke remains controversial, and the association between its low concentration and stroke is unclear. This study determines how different serum uric acid (SUA) levels are associated with stroke risk. METHODS This cross-sectional study used continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data in the United States during 1999-2020. The SUA levels of 6.0, 6.8, and 9.0 mg/dL were all considered as cut-off points. Restricted cubic spline interpolation and logistic regression models were used to evaluate the different associations. Subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses were conducted to evaluate the influence of multiple factors on the outcomes. RESULTS The study included 23,413 participants aged ≥ 20 years. A J-shaped curve existed between SUA and stroke risk, and the risk of stroke was positively correlated with SUA levels in the overall population. Subgroup analysis of all adults in the SUA 6.8-9.0 mg/dL group showed that stroke risk for non-Hispanic white, obese, ex-smoker, and heavy drinking groups was increased, but for the other Hispanic group was reduced. In the SUA < 6.0 mg/dL group, stroke risk for ex-smoker, heavy drinkers, and no chronic kidney disease groups was increased. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate a J-shaped relationship between SUA levels and stroke risk. Low and high SUA levels increased stroke risk for different populations, except in the other Hispanic population. Early SUA management is highly significant for stroke prevention in high-risk populations.
