Abstract
Postbiotics are (i) "soluble factors secreted by live bacteria, or released after bacterial lysis, such as enzymes, peptides, teichoic acids, peptidoglycan-derived muropeptides, polysaccharides, cell-surface proteins and organic acids"; (ii) "non-viable metabolites produced by microorganisms that exert biological effects on the hosts"; and (iii) "compounds produced by microorganisms, released from food components or microbial constituents, including non-viable cells that, when administered in adequate amounts, promote health and wellbeing". A probiotic- and prebiotic-rich diet ensures an adequate supply of these vital nutrients. During the anaerobic fermentation of organic nutrients, such as prebiotics, postbiotics act as a benevolent bioactive molecule matrix. Postbiotics can be used as functional components in the food industry by offering a number of advantages, such as being added to foods that are harmful to probiotic survival. Postbiotic supplements have grown in popularity in the food, cosmetic, and healthcare industries because of their numerous health advantages. Their classification depends on various factors, including the type of microorganism, structural composition, and physiological functions. This review offers a succinct introduction to postbiotics while discussing their salient features and classification, production, purification, characterization, biological functions, and applications in the food industry. Furthermore, their therapeutic mechanisms as antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-diabetic, and anti-inflammatory agents are elucidated.

Abstract
Smoothies are claimed to be an effective way of promoting fruit and vegetable consumption. They are a rich source of bioactive compounds and provide numerous health benefits. Strawberries and apples are among the most popular smoothie ingredients. Additionally, chokeberry presents antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Another interesting fruit with a wide range of health benefits is the honeysuckle berry. In this study, a dry extract from the mentioned fruit was combined to produce a smoothie enriched in bioactive compounds of unique health-promoting properties. The smoothies were rich in anthocyanins, flavonols, phenolic acids, flavan-3-ols and iridoids. Smoothies with higher concentrations of a polyphenol-iridoid honeysuckle berry extract (0.50%) were the products of a greater content of bioactive compounds and higher antioxidant activity compared to those with no extract or a lower amount (0.25%). However, the sensory evaluation showed that, according to customers, the least attractive smoothies are those with the greatest amounts of the honeysuckle berry extract. Therefore, the correct balance between taste and bioactivity should be sought in order to obtain an innovative product showing characteristics of functional food.

Abstract
Blue honeysuckle is a source of anthocyanins with great potential as a food colorant, and a healthy and functional food material, and contains much cyanidin 3-glucoside (C3G), which has many benefits for human health. A rapid, reliable, accurate quantification method of anthocyanin content in different varieties of blue honeysuckle is critical to help in breeding and selecting excellent varieties which are used in the food processing industry and healthcare industry. Our objective was to verify the modified quantification method of C3G and quantified C3G content in three blue honeysuckle varieties of 'Berel', 'Lanjingling' and 'Wulan' using the modified HPLC method by Agilent 1200 system and CAPCELL PAK C18 column (150 mmⅹ4.6 mm, I. D., 5 μm, Japan), with detection at 530 nm, the solvent flow rate was 1 mL/min, the temperature of the column chamber is 35 °C. The results indicated that the modified method was validated in terms of linearity (R2 = 0.999), precision (RSD = 0.61%), stability (RSD = 5.23%), and recovery with a good level, and C3G can be quickly quantified in blue honeysuckle. In addition, 'Wulan' contains the highest C3G level compared with 'Lanjingling' and 'Berel'.

Abstract
Gut microbiota-diet interaction has been identified as a key factor of metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Recent studies suggested that dietary polyphenols may protect against MAFLD by regulating gut microbiota; however, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. We first investigated the effects of cyanidin 3-glucoside and its phenolic metabolites on high-fat diet induced MAFLD in C57BL/6J mice, and protocatechuic acid (PCA) showed a significant positive effect. Next, regulation of PCA on lipid metabolism and gut microbiota were explored by MAFLD mouse model and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) experiment. Dietary PCA reduced intraperitoneal and hepatic fat deposition with lower levels of transaminases (AST & ALT) and inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6, TNF-α & MCP-1), but higher HDL-c/LDL-c ratio. Characterization of gut microbiota indicated that PCA decreased the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio mainly by reducing the relative abundance of genus Enterococcus, which was positively correlated with the levels of LDL-c, AST, ALT and most of the up-regulated hepatic lipids by lipidomics analysis. FMT experiments showed that Enterococcus faecalis caused hepatic inflammation, fat deposition and insulin resistance with decreased expression of carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1 alpha (CPT1α), which can be reversed by PCA through inhibiting Enterococcus faecalis. Transcriptomics analysis suggested that Enterococcus faecalis caused a significant decrease in the expression of fibroblast growth factor 1 (Fgf1), and PCA recovered the expression of Fgf1 with insulin-like growth factor binding protein 2 (Igfbp2), insulin receptor substrate 1 (Irs1) and insulin receptor substrate 2 (Irs2). These results demonstrated that high proportion of gut Enterococcus faecalis accelerates MAFLD with decreased expression of CPT1α and Fgf1, which can be prevented by dietary supplementation of PCA.

Abstract
Using honeysuckle as raw material, chlorogenic acid (CGA) was extracted with different alcohols. Based on the single-factor experiment design, the relationship between each parameter and the response value was explored by Box–Behnken method to optimize the process conditions. Best extraction results were obtained under the conditions of solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:20, the ultrasonic time of 40 min, the ultrasonic vibrator power of 240 w, and the CGA extraction rate of 2.98%. The experimental data show that the extraction rate of CGA is related to the length of the alcohol carbon chain and the number of hydroxyl groups in the extractant. The results from this work can provide technical basis for the safe and efficient production of CGA from honeysuckle.

Abstract
Placental function is vital to the fetal growth of sows, and resveratrol (RES) can protect cells against oxidative stress, which is one of the major factors impairing placental function. This study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary resveratrol (RES) on placental function and reproductive performance during late pregnancy in a sow model from the aspects of oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and gut microbiota. A total of 26 hybrid pregnant sows (Landrace × Yorkshire) with similar parity were randomly allocated into two groups (n = 13) and fed with a basal diet or a diet containing 200 mg/kg of resveratrol from day 85 of gestation until parturition. The dietary supplementation of RES increased the litter weight at parturition by 12.53% (p = 0.145), with ameliorated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), increased triglyceride (TG) levels, and decreased interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 levels in serum (p < 0.05). Moreover, resveratrol increased the placental vascular density (p < 0.05) with the enhanced expression of nutrient transporter genes (SLC2A1 and SLC2A3) and antioxidant genes, such as superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) but declined the expression of inflammatory genes, such as IL-1β and IL-6 (p < 0.05). The characterization of the fecal microbiota revealed that resveratrol decreased the relative abundance of the Christensensllaceae R-7 group and Ruminococcaceae UCG-008 (p < 0.05), which had a positive linear correlation with the expression of IL-1β and IL-6 (p < 0.05), but had a negative linear correlation with the expression of SOD2, HO-1, SLC2A1, and SCL2A3 genes (p < 0.05). These data demonstrated that dietary supplementation with resveratrol can improve placental function with ameliorated insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and inflammation potentially by regulating Ruminococcaceae UCG-008 and the Christensensllaceae R-7 group in sows.

Abstract
Eucommia ulmoides bark has been traditionally used as a Chinese medicine to attenuate stress, but the leaf, which is rich in polyphenols and polysaccharides, has been rarely used. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Eucommia ulmoides leaf extracts (EULEs) on oxidative stress and meat quality of broilers. A total of 252 broilers were randomly divided into 3 treatments and fed with a control basal diet (CON), or a diet containing 250 mg/kg or 1,000 mg/kg of EULE for 51 days. Results showed that dietary supplementation of 250 mg/kg EULE increased significantly the average daily gain of broilers in the early stage (1–21 days), while 250 mg/kg or 1,000 mg/kg of EULE decreased the feed conversion ratio in the whole period (P < 0.05). Supplementation of 250 mg/kg EULE reduced the level of MDA in the liver (P < 0.05), while 1,000 mg/kg EULE decreased the serum level of MDA (P < 0.05), and the HDL level in serum was increased by 250 mg/kg or 1,000 mg/kg EULE (P < 0.05). Additionally, 250 mg/kg EULE decreased abdominal fat ratio and serum triglyceride (TC) level in broilers, while 250 or 1,000 mg/kg of EULE reduced drip loss in breast muscle (P < 0.05), and 1,000 mg/kg EULE reduced the cooking loss in thigh muscle (P < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary supplementation of 250 mg/kg of EULE could attenuate oxidative stress and improve the growth performance and meat quality in broilers.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare the protective effects of different selenium supplements against heat stress and exercise fatigue-induced liver injury and to investigate the potential mechanisms of action. Selenium-enriched soybean protein (SePro), selenium-enriched soybean peptides (SePPs), and selenomethionine (SeMet) are organic selenium supplements in which selenium replaces the sulfur in their sulfur-containing amino acids. Common peptides (PPs) are obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis of soybean protein which was extracted from common soybean. The SePPs with higher hydrolysis degree and selenium retention were isolated via alkaline solubilization and acid precipitation and the enzymatic hydrolysis of alkaline protease, neutral protease, and papain. The results showed that SePPs could significantly increase the antioxidant levels in rats, inhibit lipid peroxidation, and reduce liver enzyme levels in rat serum, while the histological findings indicated that the inflammatory cell infiltration in the liver tissue was reduced, and new cells appeared after treatment with SePPs. Moreover, SePPs could increase glutathione (GSH) and GSH peroxidase (GSH-Px) in the liver, as well as protect the liver by regulating the NF-κB/IκB pathway, prevent interleukin 1β (IL-1β), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) release in the liver. The SePPs displayed higher antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in vivo than SePro, SeMet, Sodium selenite (Na2SeO3), and PPs. Therefore, SePPs could be used as a priority selenium resource to develop heatstroke prevention products or nutritional supplements.

Abstract
Lonicera caerulea is a honeysuckle plant with a long development history. It is defined as a "homology of medicine and food" fruit because it is rich in bioactive substances. By-products (such as pomace, leaves, stems, and flowers), which also have beneficial values, will be produced during processing. Nevertheless, the reuse of derivatives and the further development of new products of Lonicera caerulea are still a challenge. Firstly, this paper traced the development history of Lonicera caerulea and summarized its primary nutrients and bioactive substances, subsequently discussed the research progress and underlying molecular mechanisms of its functional properties, and introduced the application and potential of Lonicera caerulea in the fields of food, health products, cosmetics, medicine, and materials. Finally, this paper put forward the future research direction to promote the development of the Lonicera caerulea industry. To sum up, Lonicera caerulea, as a potential raw material, can be used to produce more functional products. Besides, more in-depth clinical trials are needed to clarify the specific molecular mechanism of the practical components of Lonicera caerulea and improve the rate of development and utilization.HighlightsThe original species of Lonicera caerulea subgroup had appeared on the earth as early as the end of the third century.Lonicera caerulea has been introduced into North America since the 18th century, but the introduction process has not ended until now.Lonicera caerulea widely exists in Eurasia and North America and it has excellent cold tolerance, early maturity and ornamental.The fruits, stems, leaves and flowers of Lonicera caerulea all have bioactive value, but the specific molecular mechanism and utilization need to be improved.Lonicera caerulea has been widely used in food, medicine, health products, cosmetics and materials, but there are still great challenges.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lonicera Linn. belonging to the family Caprifoliaceae, the largest genus in the plant family, includes about more than 200 species, which are mainly distributed in northern Africa, North America, Europe and Asia. Some species of this genus have been usually used in traditional Chinese medicine as well as functional foods, cosmetics and other applications, such as L. japonica Thunb. Bioactive components and pharmacological activities of the genus Lonicera plants have received an increasing interest from the scientific community. Thus, a comprehensive and systematic review on their traditional usage in China, chemical components, and their pharmacological properties of their whole plants, bioactive extracts, and bioactive isolates including partial structure-activity relationships from the genus is indispensable. METHODS Information on genus Lonicera of this systematic electronic literature search was gathered via the published articles, patents, clinical trials website (https://clinicaltrials.gov/) and several online bibliographic databases (PubMed, Sci Finder, Research Gate, Science Direct, CNKI, Web of Science and Google Scholar). The following keywords were used for the online search: Lonicera, phytochemical composition, Lonicerae japonica, Lonicera review articles, bioactivities of Lonicera, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antimicrobial, anticancer, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, neuroprotective, anti-diabetic, and clinical trials. This review paper consists of a total of 225 papers covering the Lonicera genus from 1800 to 2021, including research articles, reviews, patents, and book chapters. RESULTS In this review (1800s-2021), about 420 components from the genus of Lonicera Linn. including 87 flavonoids, 222 terpenoids, 51 organic acids, and other compounds, together with their pharmacological activities including anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antimicrobial, anticancer, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, neuroprotective, antidiabetic, anti-allergic, immunomodulatory effects, and toxicity were summarized. CONCLUSION The relationship is discussed among their traditional usage, their pharmacological properties, and their chemical components, which indicate the genus Lonicera have a large prospect in terms of new drug exploitation, especially in COVID-19 treatment.

Abstract
Ferulic acid (FA) and vanillic acid (VA) are considered as major phenolic metabolites of cyanidin 3-glucoside, a polyphenol that widely exists in plants that possess a protective effect against oxidative stress and inflammation in our previous study. This study aimed to investigate the effect of FA and VA on inflammation, gut barrier function, and growth performance in a weaned piglet model challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Thirty-six piglets (PIC 337 × C48, 28 d of age) were randomly allocated into 3 treatments with 6 replicate pens (2 piglets per pen). They were fed with a basal diet or a diet containing 4,000 mg/kg of FA or VA. Dietary supplementation of VA significantly increased average daily gain (ADG) (P < 0.05). Both FA and VA decreased serum levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), interlukin (IL)-1β, IL-2, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α (P < 0.05), and enhanced the expression of tight junction protein oclaudin (P < 0.05). Analysis of gut microbiota indicated that both FA and VA increased the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio alongside reducing the relative abundance of the Prevotellaceae family including Prevotella 9 and Prevotella 2 genera, but enriched the Lachoiraceaea family including the Lachnospiraceae FCS020 group (P < 0.05). Moreover, VA reduced the relative abundance of Prevotella 7 and Prevotella 1 but enriched Lachnospira, Eubacterium eligens group, and Eubacterium xylanophilum group (P < 0.05), while FA showed a limited effect on these genera. The results demonstrated that both VA and FA could alleviate inflammation and oxidative stress, but only VA has a significant positive effect on the growth performance of LPS-challenged piglets potentially through modulating gut microbiota.

Abstract
Lonicera caerulea L. (Loni) represents a promising source of beneficial polyphenols with therapeutical potential in cardiovascular diseases. We aimed to study the effects of Loni and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) on selected cardiometabolic parameters and NO/ROS balance in obese Zucker rats. Male Zucker rats were divided into the control group and groups treated with CoQ10 (30 mg/kg/day) or Loni (5 g/kg/day) for 6 weeks. Blood pressure, body weight, heart weight, and plasma lipid profile were determined. NOS activity and protein expressions of eNOS, SOD, NADPH oxidase, and NF-kappa B were measured in the heart and aorta. Neither body weight nor blood pressure were significantly changed after six weeks of Loni or CoQ10 treatment. Both Loni and CoQ10 decreased the plasma LDL level. Moreover, Loni decreased the total cholesterol level. The total NOS activity did not change in the heart after the treatments. However, in the aorta, Loni treatment increased NOS activity and protein expression of SOD and decreased expressions of NADPH oxidase and NF-kappa B compared to both the control and CoQ10 groups. There were no changes in the eNOS protein expression within the groups. In conclusion, it seems that the antioxidant effect of Loni was responsible for both the decrease of plasma LDL and the total cholesterol levels and the increase of vascular NOS activity.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a manifestation of metabolic syndrome closely linked to dyslipidemia and gut microbiome dysbiosis. Bilberry anthocyanins (BA) have been reported to have preventive effects against metabolic syndrome. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects and mechanisms of BA in a Western diet (WD)-induced mouse model. The results revealed that supplementation with BA attenuated the serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), fat content in liver, 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) caused by WD. Furthermore, gut microbiota characterized by 16S rRNA sequencing revealed that BA reduced remarkably the ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) and modified gut microbiome. In particular, BA increased the relative abundance of g_Akkermansia and g_Parabacteroides. Taken together, our data demonstrated that BA might ameliorate WD-induced NAFLD by attenuating dyslipidemia and gut microbiome dysbiosis.

Abstract
Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a common and complicated chronic kidney disease around the world. To elucidate and find effective therapies of DN is of vital importance. In this paper, we have discovered that cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G), which is one of the anthocyanins, could alleviate high glucose-induced podocyte dysfunction. MTT, flow cytometry assay, and Western blot analysis showed that C3G could reverse the increase of cell apoptosis under high glucose treatment in MPC5 cells by upregulation of Bcl2 and downregulation of Bax and cleaved caspase-3. Moreover, C3G improved the autophagy decrease that was induced by high glucose through regulating the expression level of LC3-II/LC3-I, Beclin1, and p62. In addition, C3G inhibited epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) by increasing E-cadherin and reducing Vimentin. By further study of the mechanisms, we found C3G activated the SIRT1 and AMPK which were inhibited in high glucose condition. Silencing SIRT1 blocked the effect of C3G on regulating cell apoptosis, autophagy, and EMT. In summary, our current findings suggest the protective effect of C3G against high glucose-induced podocyte dysfunction is by improving autophagy and reducing apoptosis and EMT via activating SIRT1/AMPK pathway. It might be a new insight for the treatment of DN.

Abstract
Here, we examined the effects of Lonicera japonica extract (LJE) on lactation performance, antioxidant status, and endocrine and immune function in heat-stressed mid-lactation dairy cows. Twenty-four healthy Chinese Holstein mid-lactation dairy cows, all with similar milk yield (30.0 ± 1.0 kg/d), parity (2.5 ± 0.3), and days in milk (105 ± 5 d) were allocated to 4 groups using a randomized complete block design: a negative control group (without LJE supplementation; CON) and groups that received LJE at 14, 28, and 56 g/d. The experiment lasted 10 wk over a hot summer, with a pre-feeding period of 2 wk. Cows were exposed to heat stress, as the average temperature-humidity index was greater than 72. The results showed that LJE had no effect on respiration rate; however, it reduced the rectal temperature of dairy cows experiencing heat stress in both a linear and quadratic manner; the lowest (39.03°C) was recorded for the LJE-28 group, lower than the CON group. Supplementation with LJE did not affect dry matter intake, milk yield, or milk composition. The majority of biochemical parameters in serum were unaffected by supplementation with different amounts of LJE; the exception was creatinine, which was reduced quadratically. Compared with the CON group, serum triiodothyronine concentrations increased significantly in the LJE-28 group. Addition of LJE to the diet increased thyroxine concentrations quadratically; values peaked at 18.62 ng/mL in the LJE-28 group. Furthermore, supplementation with increasing amounts of LJE quadratically increased the activity of glutathione peroxidase and total antioxidant capacity in serum but decreased concentration of malondialdehyde. Although we detected no differences in the concentrations of IgA, IgM, or cytokines, dairy cows in the LJE-28 group had higher IgG and IL-4 concentrations than did cows in the CON group. Supplementation with LJE increased concentrations of IgG and IL-4 in the serum quadratically but decreased that of IL-2. Finally, heat shock protein 72 concentrations in the serum tended to fall quadratically as the amount of LJE increased. In summary, LJE had no negative effects on lactation performance but helped to alleviate heat stress by improving antioxidant status and promoting endocrine and immune functions. Supplementation with LJE at 28 g/d is recommended for lactating dairy cows experiencing heat stress during hot summers.

Abstract
Background Weaning is one of the major factors that cause stress and intestinal disease in piglets. Protocatechuic acid (PCA) is an active plant phenolic acid which exists in Chinese herb, Duzhong (Eucommia ulmoides Oliver), and is also considered as the main bioactive metabolite of polyphenol against oxidative stress and inflammation. This study aimed to investigate the effect of PCA on growth performance, intestinal barrier function, and gut microbiota in a weaned piglet model challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Methods Thirty-six piglets (Pig Improvement Company line 337 × C48, 28 d of age, 8.87 kg ± 0.11 kg BW) were randomly allocated into 3 treatments and fed with a basal diet (CTL), a diet added 50 mg/kg of aureomycin (AUR), or a diet supplemented with 4000 mg/kg of PCA, respectively. The piglets were challenged with LPS (10 μg/kg BW) on d 14 and d 21 by intraperitoneal injection during the 21-d experiment. Animals (n = 6 from each group) were sacrificed after being anesthetized by sodium pentobarbital at 2 h after the last injection of LPS. The serum was collected for antioxidant indices and inflammatory cytokines analysis, the ileum was harvested for detecting mRNA and protein levels of tight junction proteins by PCR and immunohistochemical staining, and the cecum chyme was collected for intestinal flora analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results Dietary supplementation of PCA or AUR significantly increased the expression of tight junction proteins including ZO-1 and claudin-1 in intestinal mucosa, and decreased the serum levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and IL-6, as compared with CTL group. In addition, PCA also decreased the serum levels of IL-2 and TNF-α (P < 0.05). Analysis of gut microbiota indicated that PCA increased the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio (P < 0.05). Spearman’s correlation analysis at the genus level revealed that PCA reduced the relative abundance of Prevotella 9, Prevotella 2, Holdemanella, and Ruminococcus torques group (P < 0.05), and increased the relative abundance of Roseburia and Desulfovibrio (P < 0.05), whereas AUR had no significant effect on these bacteria. Conclusions These results demonstrated that both PCA and AUR had protective effect on oxidative stress, inflammation and intestinal barrier function in piglets challenged with LPS, and PCA potentially exerted the protective function by modulating intestinal flora in a way different from AUR. Abstract
In our previous study, we demonstrated that cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G)-rich haskap (Lonicera caerulea L.) berry extracts can attenuate the carcinogen-induced DNA damage in normal lung epithelial cells in vitro. Here, the efficacy of lyophilized powder of whole haskap berry (C3G-HB) in lowering tobacco-specific nitrosamine, 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone, (NNK)-induced lung tumorigenesis in A/JCr mice was investigated. Three weeks after daily oral administration of C3G-HB (6 mg of C3G in 0.2 g of C3G-HB/mouse/day), lung tumors were initiated by a single intraperitoneal injection of NNK. Dietary C3G-HB supplementation was continued, and 22 weeks later, mice were euthanized. Lung tumors were visualized through positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) 19 weeks after NNK injection. Dietary supplementation of C3G-HB significantly reduced the NNK-induced lung tumor multiplicity and tumor area but did not affect tumor incidence. Immunohistochemical analysis showed reduced expression of proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and Ki-67 in lung tissues. Therefore, C3G-HB has the potential to reduce the lung tumorigenesis, and to be used as a source for developing dietary supplements or nutraceuticals for reducing the risk of lung cancer among high-risk populations.

Abstract
Heme oxygenase (HO) is the primary antioxidant enzyme involved in heme group degradation. A variety of stimuli triggers the expression of the inducible HO-1 isoform, which is modulated by its substrate and cellular stressors. A major anti-inflammatory role has been assigned to the HO-1 activity. Therefore, in recent years HO-1 induction has been employed as an approach to treating several disorders displaying some immune alterations components, such as exacerbated inflammation or self-reactivity. Many natural compounds have shown to be effective inductors of HO-1 without cytotoxic effects; among them, most are chemicals present in plants used as food, flavoring, and medicine. Here we discuss some naturally derived compounds involved in HO-1 induction, their impact in the immune response modulation, and the beneficial effect in diverse autoimmune disorders. We conclude that the use of some compounds from natural sources able to induce HO-1 is an attractive lifestyle toward promoting human health. This review opens a new outlook on the investigation of naturally derived HO-1 inducers, mainly concerning autoimmunity.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to optimize the total anthocyanin content (TAC), total phenolic content (TPC), and antioxidant activity of acidified water extract from blue honeysuckle berries by response surface methodology (RSM). The optimized conditions were HCl concentration of 0.35%, liquid-solid ratio of 49.42 ml/g, and extraction temperature of 41.56°C for total anthocyanin content (24.01 ± 0.37 mg/g), total phenolic content (207.03 ± 3.31 mg/g), DPPH radical scavenging activity (68.24 ± 1.13%), and ABTS radical scavenging activity (70.05 ± 0.84%). The experimental results are consistent with the predicted values. The results showed that acidified water extraction was an effective, simple, and green technique for the extraction of total anthocyanins, total phenol, and antioxidant activity from blue honeysuckle berries.

Abstract
Lonicera caerulea berry polyphenols (LCBP) are known to reduce cholesterol accumulation. Currently, it is unknown whether LCBP can activate Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) to regulate the formation of RAW264.7 macrophage foam cells. In this study, the effect of LCBP on lipid accumulation in macrophages was evaluated. Fluorescently labeled ox-LDL and 25-NBD cholesterol were used to detect the ox-LDL uptake and cholesterol outflow rate from macrophages. Gene silencing was performed using siRNA to detect changes in the expression of the ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1), sterol regulatory element-binding protein 2 (SREBP2), and SIRT1 proteins using Western blotting, and changes in the expression of miR-33 were detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction. The results showed that treatment with 80 μg/mL LCBP significantly inhibited the accumulation of lipids in RAW264.7 macrophages induced by ox-LDL and reduced intracellular cholesterol levels by activating SIRT1 to enhance the expression of ABCA1, a cholesterol efflux gene, but not independent effect. Of the three key LCBP components investigated, chlorogenic acid was found to activate SIRT1 and regulate the expression of the cholesterol-related factors ABCA1, SREBP2, and miR-33; cyanidin-3-glucoside and catechins were effective to a lesser extent. Our results suggest a novel hypolipidemic mechanism of LCBP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE The blue honeysuckle berry (Lonicera caerulea var. edulis L.) is a small deciduous shrub belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family that is native to Russia, China, Japan, and Korea. The berry of this shrub is edible, sweet and juicy and is commonly known as the blue honeyberry (BHB). This study examined the anti-diabetic potential of BHB on high-fat-diet-induced mild diabetic mice. The hypoglycemic, and nephroprotective effects of the 12-week oral administration of blue honeyberry extract were analyzed. MATERIALS/METHODS The hypoglycemic effects were based on the observed changes in insulin, blood glucose, and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Furthermore, the changes in the weight of the pancreas, including its histopathology and immunohistochemical investigation were also performed. Moreover, the nephroprotective effects were analyzed by observing the changes in kidney weight, its histopathology, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and serum creatinine levels. RESULTS The results showed that the high-fat diet (HFD)-induced control mice showed a noticeable increase in blood glucose, insulin, HbA1c, BUN, and creatinine levels. Furthermore, growth was observed in lipid droplet deposition related to the degenerative lesions in the vacuolated renal tubules with the evident enlargement and hyperplasia of the pancreatic islets. In addition, in the endocrine pancreas, there was an increase in the insulin-and glucagon-producing cells, as well as in the insulin/glucagon cell ratios. On the other hand, compared to the HFD-treated mice group, all these diabetic and related complications were ameliorated significantly in a dose-dependent manner after 84 days of the continuous oral administration of BHBe at 400, 200 and 100 mg/kg, and a dramatic resettlement in the hepatic glucose-regulating enzyme activities was observed. CONCLUSIONS By assessing the key parameters for T2DM, the present study showed that the BHBe could act as a potential herbal agent to cure diabetes (type II) and associated ailments in HFD-induced mice.

Abstract
Liver inflammation and excessive accumulation of lipids play a critical role in alcoholic liver diseases (ALD) pathogenesis. Plant polyphenols are widely used to prevent toxic liver damage. The anthocyanin from Lonicera caerulea L. was extracted and purified. The aim of the study was to evaluate the hepatoprotective mechanism of the purified component (PLE), focusing on the effects of PLE on alcoholic steatohepatitis. C57BL/6 mice were fed on chronic plus binge ethanol in Lieber-DeCarli liquid diet to establish acute ethanol model. PLE treatment significantly reduced the accumulation of serum aminotransferase and triglycerides and increased albumin levels in ethanol-induced mice. Also, PLE ameliorated histological changes and lipid droplets induced by ethanol. In addition, PLE obviously suppressed the expression of SREBP1 and enhanced phosphorylation of AMPK compared with chronic ethanol administration. PLE suppressed inflammasome activation by decreasing F4/80 level and inhibiting caspase-1, thereby preventing activated macrophages from producing pro-inflammation cytokines. AML12 cells were pretreated with different concentrations of PLE for 2 h and then exposed to ethanol for 48 h. PLE suppressed the expression of SREBP1 and enhanced phosphorylation of AMPK in AML12 cells exposed to ethanol. Additionally, PLE inhibited the expression of F4/80 and decreased IL-1β release. AMPK interference confirms that PLE downregulation SREBP1 and F4/80 depending on AMPK activation in ethanol-treated AML12 cells. PLE possessed the capacity for inhibiting the inflammatory response and suppressing lipid accumulation, indicating that PLE can be used as a dietary health supplement for alcoholic steatohepatitis.

Abstract
Honeyberry (Lonicera caerulea) has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. Its predominant anthocyanin, cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G), possesses antioxidant and many other potent biological activities. We aimed to investigate the effects of honeyberry extract (HBE) supplementation on HepG2 cellular steatosis induced by free fatty acids (FFA) and in diet-induced obese mice. HepG2 cells were incubated with 1 mM FFA to induce lipid accumulation with or without HBE. Obesity in mice was induced by a 45% high fat diet (HFD) for 6 weeks and subsequent supplementation of 0.5% HBE (LH) and 1% HBE (MH) for 6 weeks. HBE suppressed fatty acid synthesis and ameliorated lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells induced by FFA. Moreover, HBE also decreased lipid accumulation in the liver in the supplemented HBE group (LH, 0.5% or MH, 1%) compared with the control group. The expressions of adipogenic genes involved in hepatic lipid metabolism of sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1 (SREBP-1c), CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein alpha (C/EBPα), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), and fatty acid synthase (FAS) were decreased both in the HepG2 cells and in the livers of HBE-supplemented mice. In addition, HBE increased mRNA and protein levels of carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT-1) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα), which are involved in fatty acid oxidation. Furthermore, HBE treatment increased the phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and Acetyl-CoA Carboxylase (ACC). Honeyberry effectively reduced triglyceride accumulation through down-regulation of hepatic lipid metabolic gene expression and up-regulation of the activation of AMPK and ACC signaling in both the HepG2 cells as well as in livers of diet-induced obese mice. These results suggest that HBE may actively ameliorate non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Abstract
Polyphenols from the Lonicera caerulea L. berry have shown protective effects on experimental non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in our previous studies. As endotoxins from gut bacteria are considered to be the major trigger of inflammation in NAFLD, this study aims to clarify the regulatory effects of L. caerulea L. berry polyphenols (LCBP) on gut microbiota in a high fat diet (HFD)-induced mouse model. C57BL/6N mice were fed with a normal diet, HFD, or HFD containing 0.5–1% of LCBP for 45 days. The results revealed that supplementation with LCBP decreased significantly the levels of IL-2, IL-6, MCP-1, and TNF-α in serum, as well as endotoxin levels in both serum and liver in HFD-fed mice. Fecal microbiota characterization by high throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that a HFD increased the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, and LCBP reduced this ratio by increasing the relative abundance of Bacteroides,Parabacteroides, and another two undefined bacterial genera belonging to the order of Bacteroidales and family of Rikenellaceae, and also by decreasing the relative abundance of six bacterial genera belonging to the phylum Firmicutes, including Staphylococcus, Lactobacillus, Ruminococcus, and Oscillospira. These data demonstrated that LCBP potentially attenuated inflammation in NAFLD through modulation of gut microbiota, especially the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes.

Abstract
Blue honeysuckle is rich in polyphenols, and recently receiving attention because of its potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the leading cause of chronic liver disease that develops hepatic inflammation and metabolic syndrome. The present study aims to study the effect of blue honeysuckle extract (BHE) on fat deposition and hepatic lipid peroxidation in a high-fat-diet (HFD)-induced mouse model. Mice were fed a normal diet (ND) or a HFD containing 0.5% or 1% of BHE or not for 45 d. Liver sections were stained by hematoxylin-eosin staining. Serum lipids were measured by a clinical analyzer. Insulin was examined by ELISA, and hepatic proteins were detected by Western blotting. Dietary supplementation of BHE dose-dependently suppressed HFD-induced obesity and hepatic fat deposition. Moreover, BHE improved glucose metabolism by increasing insulin sensitivity and attenuated oxidative stress potentially by up-regulating nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2)-mediated pathway.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Methotrexate is one of the most widely used disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs. The hepatotoxicity of methotrexate resulted in poor compliance with therapy. The current study was designed to analyse the combined therapy of andrographolide (AD) and methotrexate (MTX) for complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced arthritis, focusing on hepatoprotective effects, oxidative stress and arthritic-related cytokines. METHOD Wistar rats were injected with CFA into the right hind paw. Ten days post-CFA injection, the Wistar rats were administered with 1% CMC-Na solution, methotrexate (2 mg/kg/week), AD (50 mg/kg/d) and combined therapy for 35 days. The anti-arthritic effect was assessed by paw volume, X-ray and serum tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-1β levels. Serum samples were also analysed for glutamic oxaloacetic transaminases (GOT), serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), alkaline phosphatase (AKP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Liver tissue samples were used to examine the cellular antioxidant defence activities using catalase activity (CAT) and GSH as well as GSH-Px and MDA. Histopathology analysis was conducted to evaluate liver damage. RESULTS AD treatment strengthened the anti-arthritic capacity of MTX. AD and MTX-combined therapy additively reduced the inflammatory symptoms in CFA rats. The combined therapy of AD and MTX showed hepatoprotective effect indicated by an improvement in the serum marker, possibly due to antioxidant action and confirmed by liver histopathological changes. Furthermore, the combined therapy significantly reduced serum TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β levels. CONCLUSIONS A combined therapy of AD and methotrexate significantly alleviated MTX-induced hepatocellular injury and strengthened the anti-arthritic effect. Further clinical studies should be done to further verify the possibility of combined its clinical usage.

Abstract
AbstractThe polyphenol profile, antioxidant activity (particularly peroxyl radical-scavenging capacity (PSC) and cellular antioxidant activity (CAA)) and cytotoxicity of extracts from seven varieties of blue honeysuckle were compared in this study. Moreover, an analysis of correlations between individual polyphenol profiles and antioxidant activities was also conducted. Seventeen components were found in the investigated blue honeysuckle extracts, with anthocyanins being the prominent bioactive components among polyphenols. Fruit peel contained higher concentrations of individual anthocyanins compared to the fruit pulp. Beilei blue honeysuckle had the highest antioxidant activity. Correlation analysis showed that antioxidant activity values were highly associated with cyanidin-3-glucoside levels. Blue honeysuckle extracts were not cytotoxic over the range of doses tested. Among the varieties analyzed, Beilei possessed the highest antioxidant properties and was found to be the most appropriate source of natural antioxidants.

Abstract
In this study, the anthocyanin from Lonicera caerulea 'Beilei' fruit (ABL) was extracted and purified. The purified component (ABL-2) was then evaluated for its anti-tumor properties on human hepatoma cells (SMMC-7721) in vitro and the murine hepatoma cells (H22) in vivo. In vitro, ABL-2 not only significantly inhibited the growth of SMMC-7721 cells, but also remarkably blocked the cells' cycle in G2/M phase, inducing DNA damage and eventually leading to apoptosis. In vivo, ABL also killed tumor cells, inhibited tumor growth, and improved the survival status of H22 tumor-bearing mice. These effects were associated with an increase in the activities of antioxidase and a decrease in the level of lipid peroxidation, as evidenced by changes in SOD, GSH-Px, GSH, and MDA levels. In addition, ABL-2 also regulated the levels of immune cytokines including IL-2, IFN-γ, and TNF-α. These results revealed that ABL-2 exerts an effective anti-tumor effect by dynamically adjusting the REDOX balance and improving the immunoregulatory activity of H22 tumor-bearing mice. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis revealed that cyanidin-3,5-diglucoside (8.16 mg/g), cyanidin-3-glucoside (387.60 mg/g), cyanidin-3-rutinoside (23.62 mg/g), and peonidin-3-glucoside (22.20 mg/g) were the main components in ABL-2, which may contribute to its anti-tumor activity.

Abstract
Lonicera caerulea L. berry polyphenols (LCBP) are considered as major components for bioactivity. This study aimed to clarify the molecular mechanisms by monitoring inflammatory and antioxidant mediator actions in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced mouse paw edema and macrophage cell model. LCBP significantly attenuated LPS-induced paw edema (3.0 ± 0.1 to 2.8 ± 0.1 mm, P < 0.05) and reduced (P < 0.05) serum levels of monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1, 100.9 ± 2.3 to 58.3 ± 14.5 ng/mL), interleukin (IL)-10 (1596.1 ± 424.3 to 709.7 ± 65.7 pg/mL), macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1α (1761.9 ± 208.3 to 1369.1 ± 56.4 pg/mL), IL-6 (1262.8 ± 71.7 to 499.0 ± 67.1 pg/mL), IL-4 (93.3 ± 25.7 to 50.7 ± 12.5 pg/mL), IL-12(p-70) (580.4 ± 132.0 to 315.2 ± 35.1 pg/mL), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α, 2045.5 ± 264.9 to 1270.7 ± 158.6 pg/mL). Cell signaling analysis revealed that LCBP inhibited transforming growth factor β activated kinase-1 (TAK1)-mediated mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathways, and enhanced the expression of nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) and manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) in earlier response. Moreover, cyanidin 3-glucoside (C3G) and (-)-epicatechin (EC), two major components of LCBP, directly bound to TAK1. These data demonstrated that LCBP might inhibit LPS-induced inflammation by modulating both inflammatory and antioxidant mediators.

Abstract
SCOPE Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a common disease, which is closely associated with inflammation and oxidative stress, and Lonicera caerulea L. polyphenols (LCP) are reported to possess both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects and mechanisms of LCP on NASH in a high-fat diet plus carbon tetrachloride (CCL4 ) induced mouse model. METHODS AND RESULTS Mice were fed with high-fat diet containing LCP (0.5-1%) or not, and then administrated with CCL4 to induce NASH. Liver sections were stained by hematoxylin-eosin stain, serum transaminases and lipids were measured by clinical analyzer, insulin was examined by ELISA, cytokines were determined by multiplex technology, and hepatic proteins were detected by Western blotting. LCP improved histopathological features of NASH with lower levels of lipid peroxidation and cytokines including granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, IL-3, IL-4, macrophage inflammatory protein-1β, IL-6, IL-5, keratinocyte-derived cytokine, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, IL-2, IL-1β, monocytes chemotactic protein-1, IL-13, IFN-γ, IL-10, IL-12(p70), IL-1α, eotaxin, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, macrophage inflammatory protein-1α, IL-17, and RANTES. Further molecular analysis revealed that LCP increased the expression of nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 and manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase, but decreased forkhead box protein O1 and heme oxygenase-1 in the liver of NASH mice. CONCLUSION Dietary supplementation of LCP ameliorates inflammation and lipid peroxidation by upregulating nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 and manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase, and downregulating forkhead box protein O1 and heme oxygenase-1 in NASH.

Abstract
Iridoid profiles of honeysuckle berry were studied. Compounds were identified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry UPLC-ESI-qTOF-MS/MS in positive and negative ions mode. The MS fragmentation pathways of detected iridoid glycosides were also studied in both modes. In the negative ESI mass spectra, iridoids with a methyl ester or lactone structure have preferentially produced adduct [M + HCOOH - H](-) ions. However, protonated ions of molecular fragments, which were released by glycosidic bond cleavage and following fragmentation of aglycone rings, were more usable for iridoid structure analysis. In addition, the neutral losses of H₂O, CO, CO₂, CH₃OH, acetylene, ethenone and cyclopropynone have provided data confirming the presence of functional substituents in the aglycone. Among the 13 iridoids, 11 were identified in honeysuckle berries for the first time: pentosides of loganic acid (two isomers), pentosides of loganin (three isomers), pentosyl sweroside, and additionally 7-epi-loganic acid, 7-epi-loganin, sweroside, secologanin, and secoxyloganin. The five pentoside derivatives of loganic acid and loganin have not been previously detected in the analyzed species. Honeysuckle berries are a source of iridoids with different structures, compounds that are rarely present in fruits.

Abstract
Resveratrol (RES), a natural polyphenol that is abundant in grapes, exerts anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and antiviral bioactive effects. Protective effects of RES against pseudorabies virus (PrV)- induced reproductive failure were investigated in a mice model. Injection of PrV partially induced stillbirth and abortion, and caused poor growth of progeny. Treatment with RES attenuated the reproductive failure induced by the virus with recovery of the serum progesterone level. RES improved the growth performance of newborn mice. RES can attenuate the reproductive failure induced by PrV in mice.
