Adsorption of platinum (IV), palladium (II) and gold (III) from aqueous solutions onto L-lysine modified crosslinked chitosan resin

Tailoring the Coordination Micro-Environment in Nanotraps for Efficient Platinum/Palladium Separation

Recovering platinum group metals from secondary resources is crucial to meet the growing demand for high-tech applications. Various techniques are explored, and adsorption using porous materials has emerged as a promising technology due to its efficient performance and environmental beingness. However, the challenge lies in effectively recovering and separating individual platinum group metals (PGMs) given their similar chemical properties. Herein, a breakthrough approach is presented by sophisticatedly tailoring the coordination micro-environment in a series of aminopyridine-based porous organic polymers, which enables the creation of platinum-specific nanotraps for efficient separation of binary PGMs (platinum/palladium). The newly synthesized POP-o2NH2-Py demonstrates record uptakes and selectivity toward platinum over palladium, with the amino groups adjacent to the pyridine moieties being vital in improving platinum binding performance. Further breakthrough experiments underline its remarkable ability to separate platinum and palladium. Spectroscopic analysis reveals that POP-o2NH2-Py offers a more favorable coordination fashion to platinum ions compared to palladium ions owing to the greater interaction between N and Pt4+ and stronger intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the amino groups and four coordinating chlorines at platinum. These findings underscore the importance of fine-tuning the coordination micro-environment of nanotraps through subtle modifications that can greatly enhance the selectivity toward the desired metal ions.

Reduction of precious metal ions in aqueous solutions by contact-electro-catalysis

Precious metals are core assets for the development of modern technologies in various fields. Their scarcity poses the question of their cost, life cycle and reuse. Recently, an emerging catalysis employing contact-electrification (CE) at water-solid interfaces to drive redox reaction, called contact-electro-catalysis (CEC), has been used to develop metal free mechano-catalytic methods to efficiently degrade refractory organic compounds, produce hydrogen peroxide, or leach metals from spent Li-Ion batteries. Here, we show ultrasonic CEC can successfully drive the reduction of Ag(ac), Rh3+, [PtCl4]2-, Ag+, Hg2+, Pd2+, [AuCl4]-, and Ir3+, in both anaerobic and aerobic conditions. The effect of oxygen on the reaction is studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and ab-initio simulation. Combining measurements of charge transfers during water-solid CE, EPR spectroscopy and gold extraction experiments help show the link between CE and CEC. What's more, this method based on water-solid CE is capable of extracting gold from synthetic solutions with concentrations ranging from as low as 0.196 ppm up to 196 ppm, reaching in 3 h extraction capacities ranging from 0.756 to 722.5 mg g-1 in 3 h. Finally, we showed CEC is employed to design a metal-free, selective, and recyclable catalytic gold extraction methods from e-waste aqueous leachates.

Exploring the insights and benefits of biomass-derived sulfuric acid activated carbon for selective recovery of gold from simulated waste streams

The surging affluent in society, concomitant with increasing global demand for electrical and electronic devices, has led to a sharp rise in e-waste generation. E-wastes contain significant amounts of precious metals, such as gold, which can be recovered and reused, thus reducing the environmental impact of mining new metals. Selective recovery using sustainable and cost-effective materials and methods is therefore vital. This study undertook a detailed evaluation of low-cost biomass-derived activated carbon (AC) for selective recovery of Au from simulated e-waste streams. Utilizing high-performance synthesized H2SO4-AC, the adsorption mechanisms were explicated through a combination of characterization techniques, i.e., FE-SEM, BET, TGA, XRD, FTIR, XPS, and DFT simulations to conceptualize the atomic and molecular level interactions. Optimization of coordination geometries between model H2SO4-AC and anionic complexes revealed the most stable coordination for AuCl4- (binding energy, Eb = -4064.15 eV). The Au selectivity was further enhanced by reduction of Au(III) to Au(0), as determined by XRD and XPS. The adsorption reaction was relatively fast (∼5h), and maximum Au uptake reached 1679.74 ± 37.66 mg/g (among highest), achieved through adsorption isotherm experiments. Furthermore, a mixture of 0.5 M thiourea/1 M HCl could effectively elute the loaded Au and regenerate the spent AC. This study presents radical attempts to examine in detail, the synergistic effects of H2SO4 activation on biomass-derived ACs for selective recovery of Au from complex mixtures. The paper therefore describes a novel approach for the selective recovery of Au from e-wastes using multifunctional biomass-derived H2SO4-AC.

OctoShaker: A versatile robotic biomechanical agitator for cellular and organoid research

Mechanical forces have increasingly been recognized as a key regulator in the fate of cellular development and functionality. Different mechanical transduction methods, such as substrate stiffness and magnetic bead vibration, have been experimented with to understand the interaction between the biophysical cues and cellular outcome. In the exploration and utilization of the intrinsic cellular mechanism, bio-shakers, traditionally invented for stirring liquid, have garnered more interest as a tool to provide precise mechanical stimuli to aid in this study. Nonetheless, despite the usefulness of current bio-shaking technology, each type of shaker often offers a single mode of motion, insufficient for generating complex force dynamics needed to resemble the actual physical condition that occurs inside living organisms. In this study, we present OctoShaker, a robotic instrument capable of creating a multitude of motions that could be sequenced or programmed to mimic sophisticated hemodynamics in vivo. We demonstrated the programmed motion of circular convection and investigated its influence on micro-particle distribution in 96-well culture microplates. Biological samples, including HeLa cells and organoids, were tested, and unique resultant patterns were observed. We anticipate the open-source dissemination of OctoShaker in diverse biological applications, encompassing biomechanical studies for cellular and organoid research, as well as other disciplines that demand dynamic mechanical force generation.

Selective capture of palladium from acid wastewater by thiazole-modified activated carbon: Performance and mechanism

As a kind of scarce metal, palladium is widely used in many chemical industries. It essential to recover palladium from secondary resources, especially acidic media, owing to high content of palladium in secondary wastes and widespread extraction of palladium via strong acids. Chemically modified carbon materials not only have the advantage of activated carbon but also achieve the precise removal of specific pollutants, which is a kind of adsorption material with broad application prospects. In this direction, we report a solid carbon material named AT-C, which is obtained by one-step synthesis of 2-aminothiazoles grafted to the carbon surface by amidation. The present adsorbent delivers a high palladium adsorption capacity of 178.9 mg g-1, and desirable thermal and chemical stability. The uniform presence of abundant sulfur atoms and CO in the porous network enables AT-C to achieve selective absorption and rapid adsorption kinetics of Pd2+ in the complex water mixture containing many competing ions in the acidic pH range. For the strongly acidic leachates of catalysts, AT-C exhibits outstanding stability in cyclic experiments. Meanwhile, the fixed-bed column test indicates that 1076 bed volumes of the feeding streams can be effectively treated. In addition, AT-C exhibits superior adsorption selectivity, and the recovery efficiency of Pd2+ in actual industrial wastewater is 96.6%. This work realizes an efficient, rapid, and selective removal of palladium under acidic conditions, and provides a reference for complex industrial water treatment and resource recovery of precious metals.

A sustainable hydrometallurgical strategy for recycling efficiently platinum from spent reforming petroleum catalyst

Platinum (Pt) is one of the most precious metals with a variety of unique industrial applications, particularly in catalytic reactions, being its recovery, after use, essential. Therefore, this work proposes a simplified hydrometallurgical strategy to recover Pt efficiently from the original (no milling) spent petrochemical Pt catalyst using an economical and environmentally sustainable process. To that end, the effectiveness of a two-step workflow constituted by one microwave-assisted leaching step using a mixture of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) followed by one ion-exchange purification step was developed and optimized. It was found that complete dissolution of Pt plus aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) from the roasted original size catalyst was achieved after microwave-assisted leaching with 25% (v/v) HCl and 2% (v/v) H2O2 during 2 cycles of 60 s. Furthermore, a strong anionic exchange (Purogold™ A194) resin used for subsequent selective purification of Pt from Al and Fe was capable of effective separation of the metals: Pt in the eluate presented a purity of 98.1%, while Al, in the raffinate, presented a purity of 99.8%. In summation, it can be concluded that the overall process is a potentially good addition to a more circular economy as it manages to recover high-quality Pt for being reused as well as other by-products, whilst minimizing the consume of reagents, leaching time (and, thus, energy), and environmental impacts.

Chitosan-Silica Composites for Adsorption Application in the Treatment of Water and Wastewater from Anionic Dyes

A series of new types of composites (biopolymer-silica materials) are proposed as selective and effective adsorbents. A new procedure for the synthesis of chitosan-nanosilica composites (ChNS) and chitosan-silica gel composites (ChSG) using geometrical modification of silica and mechanosorption of chitosan is applied. The highest adsorption efficiency was achieved at pH = 2, hence the desirability of modifications aimed at stabilizing chitosan in such conditions. The amount of chitosan in the synthesis grew to 1.8 times the adsorption capacity for the nanosilica-supported materials and 1.6 times for the silica gel-based composites. The adsorption kinetics of anionic dyes (acid red AR88) was faster for ChNS than for ChSG, which results from a silica-type effect. The various structural, textural, and physicochemical aspects of the chitosan-silica adsorbents were analyzed via small-angle X-ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy, low-temperature gas (nitrogen) adsorption, and potentiometric titration, as well as their adsorption effectiveness towards selected dyes. This indicates the synergistic effect of the presence of dye-binding groups of the chitosan component, and the developed interfacial surface of the silica component in composites.

Graphene oxide-based dendritic adsorbent for the excellent capturing of platinum group elements

Herein, we report amino functionalized thermally stable graphene oxide-based dendritic adsorbent (GODA) with the highest sorption capacity ever recorded for platinum group elements (PGEs), including platinum (Pt(IV), PtCl₆^2-) and palladium (Pd(II), PdCl₄^2-), from highly acidic aqueous solutions. The GODA was designed and synthesized to have fully ionized amine binding sites and was characterized in detail. The detail batch adsorption experiment along with kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic studies were carried out to investigate the adsorption efficacy of GODA. For both Pt(IV) and Pd(II), the experimental data are more accurately fitted with the pseudo-second-order and the intraparticle diffusion kinetic models and Langmuir isotherm model as compared to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models, respectively. The material showed the highest ever adsorption capacities of 827.8 ± 27.7 mg/g (4.24 ± 0.00 mmol/g) and 890.7 ± 29.1 mg/g (8.37 ± 0.00 mmol/g) for Pt(IV) and Pd(II), respectively, at pH 1. The adsorption equilibriums were achieved within 70 min and 65 min for Pt(IV) and Pd(II), respectively. The thermodynamic parameters indicate that the adsorptions of both metals are spontaneous. The binding mechanisms are considered to be electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, cationic-π bonding, and surface complexation between the sorbent and the sorbates. Furthermore, the as-prepared GODA exhibited high thermal stability and significant acid-resistance at pH 1. The GODA demonstrated excellent regeneration and reusability for Pt(IV) and Pd(II) over five adsorption/desorption cycles, indicating its excellence in practical applications.

Adsorption recovery of precious metals on a variety of solid substrates has steadily gained increased attention in recent years. Special attention was paid to the studies on the characterization of the adsorptive properties of materials with a high affinity for gold depending on the nature of the pendant groups present in the structure of the material. The aim of the present work was to synthesize and characterize a new material by using the sol-gel synthesis method (designated as BCb/CB). In this case, synthesis involved the following precursors: bismuth carbonate (III), carbon black, and IGEPAL surfactant (octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol). Immobilization of the heterojunction as bismuth oxide over a flexible support such as carbon black (CB) can prevent their elution in solution and make it versatile for its use in a system. In this work, a new adsorbent material based on bismuth carbonate supported over carbon black (BCb/CB) was developed and used further for gold recovery from aqueous solutions. The required material was characterized physically/chemically by scanning electron microscopy (SEM); energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX); X-ray diffraction (XRD); thermal analysis (DTG/DTA); atomic force microscopy (AFM). The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method was used to determine the specific surface area indicating a value of approximately 40 m²/g, higher than the surface of CB precursor (36 m²/g). The adsorptive properties and the adsorption mechanism of the materials were highlighted in order to recover Au(III). For this, static adsorption studies were carried out. The parameters that influence the adsorption process were studied, namely: the pH, the contact time, the temperature, and the initial concentration of the gold ions in the used solution. In order to establish the mechanism of the adsorption process, kinetic, thermodynamic, and equilibrium studies were carried out. Experimental data proved that the gold recovery can be conducted with maximum performance at pH 3, at room temperature. Thermodynamic studies proved that the gold adsorption on BCb/CB material is a spontaneous and endothermal process. The results indicate a total adsorption capacity of 13.1 mg Au(III)/g material. By using this material in real solutions, a recovery efficiency of 90.5% was obtained, concomitant with a higher selectivity (around 95%).

Guanidine-Functionalized Fluorescent sp2 Carbon-Conjugated Covalent Organic Framework for Sensing and Capture of Pd(II) and Cr(VI) Ions

Palladium is a key element in fuel cells, electronic industries, and organic catalysis. At the same time, chromium is essential in leather, electroplating, and metallurgical industries. However, their unpremeditated leakage into aquatic systems has caused human health and environmental apprehensions. Herein, we reported the development of an sp² carbon-conjugated fluorescent covalent organic framework with a guanidine moiety (sp² c-gCOF) that showed excellent thermal and chemical stability. The sp² c-gCOF showed effective sensing, capture, and recovery/removal of Pd(II) and Cr(VI) ions, which could be due to the highly accessible pore walls decorated with guanidine moieties. The fluorescent sp² c-gCOF showed higher selectivity for Pd(II) and Cr(VI) ions, with an ultra-low detection limit of 2.7 and 3.2 nM, respectively. The analysis of the adsorption properties with a pseudo-second-order kinetic model showed that sp² c-gCOF could successfully and selectively remove both Pd(II) and Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solutions. The polymer also showed excellent capture efficacy even after seven consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. Hence, this study reveals the potential of fluorescent sp² c-gCOF for detecting, removing, and recovering valuable metals and hazardous ions from wastewater, which would be useful for economic benefit, environmental safety, human health, and sustainability. The post-synthetic modification of sp² c-COF with suitable functionalities could also be useful for sensing and extracting other water pollutants and valuable materials from an aqueous system.

Recovery of palladium from a low grade palladium solution by anionic-ion exchange: kinetics, equilibrium, and metal competition

Petroleum spent catalysts may contain a significant amount of palladium (Pd) together with other major [aluminum (Al), nickel (Ni), and molybdenum (Mo)] and minor [iron (Fe), lead (Pb), and vanadium (V)] elements. Due to the high intrinsic value of Pd and its scarcity in natural ores, its recovery is highly desired. For this purpose, the ability of a strong basic anionic- resin, Purogold™ A194 resin, to remove Pd from the solution was assessed. Data from kinetic and equilibrium studies, performed under batch mode in 1 mol/L of NaCl and 1 mol/L of HNO₃ at (21 ± 1) °C, revealed that the removal of Pd fits well a pseudo-second-order kinetic model [constant rate value, k₂, of (0.062 ± 0.010) g/(mmol.min)] and a Langmuir isotherm [maximum sorption capacity of (0.80 ± 0.02) mmol/g with an affinity of resin binding sites towards Pd, K_L, of (0.18 ± 0.02) L/mmol], respectively. The sorption of other metals (Al, Fe, Pb, Mo, Ni, and V) that may be present in spent catalyst leachates was tested under similar experimental conditions [C_M = 2.5 mmol/L, 1 mol/L of NaCl and 1 mol/L of HNO₃ at (21 ± 1) °C)] and the resin showed little affinity towards each one of these metals. Also, simultaneous multi-element batch experiments with Pd and the major components (M = Al, Ni, and Mo ions) ([M]/[Pd] molar ratios between 3.4 and 52 were used) pointed out that the resin is highly selective towards Pd suggesting that the resin can be used in the selective recovery of Pd from petroleum spent catalyst leachates.

Scandium Recovery from Aqueous Solution by Adsorption Processes in Low-Temperature-Activated Alumina Products

In this paper, we studied the scandium adsorption from aqueous solutions on the surface of low-temperature-activated alumina products (GDAH). The GDAH samples are industrially manufactured, coming from the Bayer production cycle of the Sierra Leone bauxite as aluminium hydroxide, and further, by drying, milling, classifying and thermally treating up to dehydroxilated alumina products at low temperature. All experiments related to hydroxide aluminium activation were conducted at temperature values of 260, 300 and 400 °C on samples having the following particle sizes: <10 µm, 20 µm, <45 µm and <150 µm, respectively. The low-temperature-activated alumina products were characterised, and the results were published in our previous papers. In this paper, we studied the scandium adsorption process on the above materials and related thermodynamic and kinetic studies.

Adsorption of Pb(II) from water by treatment with an O-hydroxyphenyl thiourea-modified chitosan

An O-hydroxyphenyl thiourea-modified chitosan (OTCS) with excellent Pb(II) adsorption performance and selectivity was prepared as an adsorbent. The structure and morphology of the adsorbent were systematically investigated by SEM, BET, FTIR, EDX, zeta-potential measurements, XPS and XRD. The impacts of the initial Pb(II) concentration, reaction time, temperature, pH value, and coexisting ions were explored. At pH 7 and 303 K, the maximal adsorption capacity of OTCS for Pb(II) was 208.33 mg/g, which was greater than those of other adsorbing materials reported in the literature. The metal ion adsorption kinetics and isotherm models were found to obey pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isothermal model, indicating that the adsorption process was monolayer chemisorption. The adsorption process could proceed spontaneously, and the thermodynamic results revealed that the adsorption mechanism was an endothermic reaction. The ion exchange and chelation between the sulfur, nitrogen and oxygen groups on the adsorbent and lead ions endowed the material with excellent adsorption properties. Significantly, OTCS showed excellent selectivity toward Pb(II). Therefore, the adsorbent OTCS is expected to promote the wider application of chitosan in the adsorption of Pb(II).

Highly efficient metal-organic frameworks adsorbent for Pd(II) and Au(III) recovery from solutions: Experiment and mechanism

With the boom of modern industry, the demand for precious metals palladium (Pd) and gold (Au) is increasing. However, the discharge of Pd(II) and Au(III) wastewater has caused environmental pollution and shortage of resources. Here, a new metal-organic frameworks adsorbent (MOF-AFH) was synthesized to efficiently separate Pd(II) and Au(III) from the water. The adsorption behavior of Pd(II) and Au(III) was explored at the same time. When gold and palladium are adsorbed separately, the adsorption capacity of gold and palladium is 389.02 mg/g and 191.27 mg/g, respectively. The equilibration time is 3 h. When gold and palladium coexist, the adsorption capacities of Au(III) and Pd(II) are 238.71 and 115.02 mg/g, respectively. The experimental results show that the adsorption of Pd(II) and Au(III) on MOF-AFH is a single-layer chemical adsorption, which is an endothermic process. MOF-AFH has excellent selectivity and after MOF-AFH is repeatedly used 4 times, the removal effect can still reach more than 90%. The adsorption mechanisms include reduction reaction and chelation with N and O-containing functional groups on the adsorbent. There is also electrostatic interaction for Au(III) adsorption. The adsorbent can be used to efficiently recover gold and palladium from wastewater.

Effects of the Cationic Structure on the Adsorption Performance of Ionic Polymers toward Au(III): an Experimental and DFT Study

Ionic polymers have been proven to be promising adsorbents in recovering Au(III) due to their advantages of simple synthesis and high adsorption efficiency. However, the unclarity of the relationship between the adsorption ability of ionic polymers and their cationic structures hinders further optimization of their adsorption performance. This study synthesized a series of ionic polymers with pyridinium, imidazolium, piperidinium, pyrrolidinium, and triethylammonium cations to discover the effects of the cationic structure on their adsorption properties. Experimental results show that the existence of anion-π interaction between aromatic cations and [AuCl₄]^- makes the aromatic cations-anion interaction stronger, which does not enhance the adsorption performance of the aromatic-based ionic polymer. This is due to the charge delocalization in the aromatic ring, resulting in a lower electrostatic potential (ESP) of aromatic cations than that of aliphatic cations with a localized charge. The higher the ESP of cations, the better the adsorption performance of the corresponding ionic polymer. This study serves as a deep understanding of the cationic structure-adsorptive performance relationship of the ionic polymer at the molecular level and further provides a theoretical guidance to optimize the adsorption performance of ionic polymers.

Some Well-Known Alginate and Chitosan Modifications Used in Adsorption: A Review

Owing to environmental pollution and increasingly strict regulations, heavy metals have attracted the attention of many researchers in various disciplines. Alginate and chitosan derivatives have gained popularity as biosorbents for water treatment. An increase in the number of publications on modified biosorbents for the biosorption of toxic compounds reveals widespread interest in examining the requirements and positive contribution of each modification type. This paper reviews the advantages and disadvantages of using alginate and chitosan for adsorption. Well-known modifications based on chitosan and alginate, namely, grafting, functionalization, copolymerization and cross-linking, as well as applications in the field of adsorption processes, especially amino acid functionalization, are reviewed. The selection criteria for the best biosorbents and their effectiveness and proposed mechanism of adsorption are discussed critically. In the conclusion, the question of why these adsorbents need modification before use is addressed.

Recovery of Au from dilute aqua regia solutions via adsorption on the lyophilized cells of a unicellular red alga Galdieria sulphuraria: A mechanism study

The high electrical conductivity, chemical stability, and low toxicity of elemental Au make it a highly valuable resource. However, wastewater produced during the mining, utilization, and disposal of Au inevitably contains small amounts (10-40 mg L^-1) of Au, thus posing environmental risks. It is too acidic to be treated with inexpensive and eco-friendly bioadsorbents previously studied for the remediation of less acidic effluents. Herein, lyophilized Galdieria sulphuraria cells are shown to directly adsorb Au from simulated Au-containing wastewater with a total acid concentration of 4 M, achieving an adsorption capacity of 35 ± 2.5 mg g^-1 Au after 30-min exposure and a selectivity that exceeds that of an ion-exchange resin and is comparable to that of activated carbon. Additionally, Au adsorbed on these cells is more easily eluted than that adsorbed on the ion-exchange resin or activated carbon. Detailed characterizations reveal that Au accumulates on the surface of lyophilized cells, where it is mainly present as AuCl₄^- and not as Au⁰, in contrast to a previously proposed adsorption mechanism. Thus, our work provides valuable insights into the mechanism of Au adsorption on biomaterials and paves the way to the cheap and eco-friendly recovery of Au from acidic wastewater.

An Overview of Modified Chitosan Adsorbents for the Removal of Precious Metals Species from Aqueous Media

This mini-review provides coverage of chitosan-based adsorbents and their modified forms as sustainable solid-phase extraction (SPE) materials for precious metal ions, such as gold species, and their complexes in aqueous media. Modified forms of chitosan-based adsorbents range from surface-functionalized systems to biomaterial composites that contain inorganic or other nanomaterial components. An overview of the SPE conditions such as pH, temperature, contact time, and adsorbent dosage was carried out to outline how these factors affect the efficiency of the sorption process, with an emphasis on gold species. This review provides insight into the structure-property relationships for chitinaceous adsorbents and their metal-ion removal mechanism in aqueous media. Cross-linked chitosan sorbents showed a maximum for Au(III) uptake capacity (600 mg/g), while S-containing cross-linked chitosan display favourable selectivity and uptake capacity with Au(III) species. Compared to industrial adsorbents such as activated carbon, modified chitosan sorbents display favourable uptake of Au(III) species, especially in aqueous media at low pH. In turn, this contribution is intended to catalyze further research directed at the rational design of tailored SPE materials that employ biopolymer scaffolds to yield improved uptake properties of precious metal species in aqueous systems. The controlled removal of gold and precious metal species from aqueous media is highly relevant to sustainable industrial processes and environmental remediation.

Influence of reducing agents on in situ synthesis of gold nanoparticles and scaffold conductivity with emphasis on neural differentiation

BACKGROUND

Recorded advancements in nerve tissue regeneration have still not provided satisfactory results, and complete physiological recovery is not assured. The engineering of nanofibrous scaffolds provides a suitable platform for stem cell transplantation by controlling cell proliferation and differentiation to replace lost cells. In this study, a conductive scaffold was fabricated by in situ synthesis of gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) on electrospun polycaprolactone/chitosan nanofibrous scaffolds and its effect on neural differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells was investigated.

METHOD

The conductive scaffold was prepared using polycaprolactone/chitosan solution containing soluble Au ions by electrospinning approach. In situ synthesis of Au-NPs was conducted using two reducing agents, Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC) as an organophosphorus compound and formaldehyde, and also different reduction times. Morphology and distribution of the Au-NPs on the nanofibrous scaffolds were assessed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersed X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The hydrophilicity and biocompatibility of the scaffolds were determined by water contact angle and MTT assays respectively. The characterization of the scaffolds was proceeded by testing the porosity, tensile strength and electrical conductivity. Also, the scaffold's ability to support neural differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells was evaluated by immune-staining/blotting of Beta tubulin III.

RESULTS & CONCLUSION

FE-SEM and EDX results demonstrated the uniform distribution of Au-NPs on electrospun nanofibers made of a combination of polycaprolactone and chitosan (PCL/CS). We found that electrical conductivity of the scaffolds fabricated using THPC for 4 days and formaldehyde for 7 days was in the range of electrical conductivity of the scaffolds suitable for nerve regeneration. Contact angle measurements showed the effect of Au-NPs on the hydrophilic properties of the scaffolds, where the scaffold showed the porosity of 50% in the presence of Au-NPs. Au-NPs decoration on the scaffold decreased the mechanical properties with the ultimate strength of 14 (MPa). In vitro assessment demonstrated the potential of the fabricated conductive scaffold to enhance the attachment and proliferation of fibroblast cells, and differentiation potential of mesenchymal stem cells toward neuron-like cells. This designed scaffold holds promise as a future carrier and delivery platform in nerve tissue engineering.

A novel benzothiazole modified chitosan with excellent adsorption capacity for Au(III) in aqueous solutions

A novel benzothiazole modified chitosan (BCS) with excellent Au(III) adsorption performance and selectivity was prepared as adsorbents. The structure and morphology of the adsorbents were characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD and XPS. The adsorption property of the adsorbents for Au(III) were investigated under different reaction time, initial concentration of Au(III), temperature, pH and coexisting ions. The maximum adsorption capacity of BCS for Au(III) was 1072.22 mg/g at 298 K and optimal pH = 4, which was better than that of other adsorbents reported in literature. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm models fit the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir equations. This shows that the adsorption process of Au(III) is a monolayer chemical adsorption. The adsorption process can proceed spontaneously and belong to the endothermic reaction according to the thermodynamic results. The excellent adsorption performance is mainly attributed to the ion exchange and chelation of the nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen groups on the adsorbent with gold ions. Significantly, BCS has excellent selectivity toward Au(III) and remarkable recycle performance. With the high adsorption capacity, excellent selectivity and outstanding reusability, the BCS adsorbent could be a promising candidate to adsorb Au(III) from wastewater.

Effect of the length and aromaticity of N3-substituent on adsorption performance of imidazolium-based poly(ionic liquids) towards Pd (II)

Imidazolium-based poly(ionic liquids) (PILs) have been deemed as attractive candidates in the field of precious metal adsorption. However, their further performance optimization is hampered by a lack of an inner understanding of the structure-adsorption performance relationship. In this research, electron and charge distributions of the imidazolium cations are tailored by changing the N3-substitute, and their adsorption performances for PdCl₄^2- were optimized accordingly. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism is studied by synthesizing corresponding ionic liquid (IL) monomers and their Pd-adducts. Interestingly, longer N3 alkyl chains lead to more hydrogen bonds with PdCl₄^2-, which is beneficial for adsorption. Whereas, it is unfavorable for attracting anions due to a decrease in electrostatic potential (ESP) around cations caused by longer alkyl chains and aromatic substituents at N3 position. It is worth noting that the ESP around the cations plays a more important role in the adsorption process, which determines the adsorption performance of the imidazolium-based PILs. Thus, the performance optimization of imidazolium-based PILs should mainly focus on increasing the ESP of imidazolium cations in the future. This research highlights the potential of the cationic structure-adsorption performance relationship of PILs, which opens a new avenue to develop adsorbents for the metallurgical industry.

Comparative evaluation of dithiocarbamate-modified cellulose and commercial resins for recovery of precious metals from aqueous matrices

Economic and ecological issues motivate the recovery of precious metals (PMs: Ag, Au, Pd, and Pt) from secondary sources. From the viewpoint of eco-friendliness and cost-effectiveness, biomass-based resins are superior to synthetic polymer-based resins for PM recovery. Herein, a detailed comparative study of bio-sorbent dithiocarbamate-modified cellulose (DMC) and synthetic polymer-based commercial resins (Q-10R, Lewatit MonoPlus TP 214, Diaion WA30, and Dowex 1X8) for PM recovery from waste resources was conducted. The performances and applicability of the selected resins were investigated in terms of sorption selectivity, effect of competing anions, sorption isotherms, impact of temperature, and PM extractability from industrial wastes. Although the sorption selectivity toward PMs in acidic solutions by DMC and other resins was comparable, the sorption efficiency of commercial resins was adversely affected by competing anions. The sorption of PMs fitted the Langmuir model for all the studied resins, except Q-10R, which followed the Freundlich model. The maximum sorption capacity of DMC was 2.2-42 times higher than those of the resins. Furthermore, the PM extraction performance of DMC from industrial wastes exceeded that of the commercial resins, with a sorption efficiency ≥99% and a DMC dosage of 5-40 times lower.

Kinetics, Thermodynamics and Equilibrium Studies for Gold Recovery from Diluted Waste Solution

2,2′-thiobisethanol dimethacrylate/ethylene glycol dimethacrylate copolymer (coP-TEDMA/EGDMA) was used as a sorbent for gold recovery from residual solutions resulting from the electroplating industry. Firstly, synthesized material was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The sorption process mechanism was evidenced on the basis of kinetic, thermodynamic and equilibrium studies. To highlight this, the influence of solution pH, temperature and gold initial concentration on maximum sorption capacity was studied. The obtained experimental data were modeled using Langmuir, Freundlich and Sips sorption isotherms, and it was observed that the Sips one was better for describing the studied sorption process. Kinetic data were fitted using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Of these models, the studied process was better described by the pseudo-second-order model. The thermodynamic parameters free Gibbs energy (ΔG0), enthalpy (ΔH0), and entropy (ΔS0) were evaluated on the basis of the van’t Hoff equation. On the basis of the thermodynamic study, it was concluded that gold recovery on coP-TEDMA/EGDMA is a spontaneous and endothermic process.

Polyethyleneimine impregnated alginate capsule as a high capacity sorbent for the recovery of monovalent and trivalent gold

For the first time, a polyethyleneimine-impregnated alginate capsule (PEIIAC) with a high adsorption capacity is developed for the recovery of monovalent and trivalent gold from an acidic solution. The strategy results in a new type of adsorbent, polyethyleneimine impregnated alginate capsule (PEIIAC) with a core-shell structure having a large number of amine groups as cationic binding site, facilitating maximum uptake of anionic auric chloride. The maximum uptake of PEIIAC was 3078 and 929 mg/g for Au (III) and Au (I), respectively, are recordable compared to other reported adsorbents to date. The as-prepared material was executed to check the sorption efficacy for Au (III) and Au (I) in the pH range of 1-12. With an increment in pH, the uptake capacity for Au (III) increased, while the uptake capacity for Au (I) decreased. The FTIR, XRD, and XPS studies revealed that the gold adsorption mechanism includes ionic interactions and reduction, wherein the amine, hydroxyl, and carboxyl groups are involved. The capsule showed a higher adsorption efficiency than other reported sorbents, making the material applicable in acidic solutions for the recovery of Au (I) and Au (III).

Highly selective and straightforward recovery of gold and platinum from acidic waste effluents using cellulose-based bio-adsorbent

Recovery of precious metals (PMs: Au^III and Pt^IV) from waste resources is of high importance due to the environmental concern and imbalance in the supply-demand ratio. A new approach has been explored for the recovery of PM using earlier developed bio-adsorbent, dithiocarbamate-modified cellulose (DMC). The adsorbent exhibits excellent adsorption efficiency (~99%) over a wide range of pH (< 1-6) and high selectivity towards Au^III and Pt^IV extraction from acidic solutions ([H⁺]: ≥ 0.2 mol L^-1). The adsorption capacity (mmol g^-1; Au^III: 5.07, Pt^IV: 2.41) and rate to reach equilibrium (≤ 30 min) were significantly higher than most of the reported bio-adsorbents. The Au^III or Pt^IV, after captured in DMC, was subsequently recovered as Au⁰ and Pt⁰ (yield > 99%) via incineration. The protocol was verified using real waste samples containing Au^III and Pt^IV in a mixed matrix of base metal ions, and a quantitative (~100%) and selective extraction of Au^III and Pt^IV were observed. The proposed technique is more effective and straightforward than the typical adsorption-desorption-reduction based method, because of the advantages like no-use of toxic eluents, and no-addition of any reductants to collect the PMs in elemental form.

Amplified fluorescence detection and adsorption of Au3+ by the fluorescent melamine formaldehyde microspheres incorporated with N and S co-doped carbon dots

Gold is one of the potential toxic heavy metals. In the present study, Au³⁺ was detected and removed by newly-designed fluorescent microspheres (MF-CDs), i.e. melamine formaldehyde microspheres incorporated with N and S co-doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs). N,S-CDs played the role as sensing unites and melamine formaldehyde microspheres (MF) as carriers. When MF-CDs were attempted as the fluorescence probe, enhanced fluorescence sensing performance towards Au³⁺ was achieved with wider linear range (0.05-2 μM) and lower limit of detection (31 nM) compared to the N,S-CDs probe. In addition, when MF-CDs were used as the adsorbent, the adsorption capacity towards Au³⁺ reached up to 1 mmol g^-1, about ten times more than that of MF. Moreover, the Au³⁺ adsorbed on the MF-CDs could be in-situ transferred to gold nanoparticle (AuNP), forming the immobilized nanocatalyst, i.e. MF-CDs-AuNP, which could further assist the reduction of 4-nitrophenol with acceptable reusability. This study paved an avenue to design the multifunctional materials for simultaneous detection, removal and recycling of environmental concerned pollutants.

Carboxylated Graphene for Radical-Assisted Ultra-Trace-Level Water Treatment and Noble Metal Recovery

Sorption technologies, enabling removal of heavy metals, play a pivotal role in meeting the global demands for unrestricted access to drinking water. Standard sorption technologies suffer from limited efficiency related to the weak sorbent-metal interaction. Further challenges include the development of technologies enabling smart metal recovery and sorbent regeneration. To this end, a densely functionalized graphene, with 33% by mass content of carboxyl groups, linked through direct C-C bonds (graphene acid, GA) represents a previously unexplored solution to this challenge. GA revealed excellent efficiency for removal of highly toxic metals, such as Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺. Due to its selective chemistry, GA can bind heavy metals with high affinity, even at concentrations of 1 mg L^-1 and in the presence of competing ions of natural drinking water, and reduce them down to drinking water allowance levels of a few μg L^-1. This is not only due to carboxyl groups but also due to the stable radical centers of the GA structure, enabling metal ion-radical interactions, as proved by EPR, XPS, and density functional theory calculations. GA offers full structural integrity during the highly acidic and basic treatment, which is exploited for noble metal recovery (Ga³⁺, In³⁺, Pd²⁺) and sorbent regeneration. Owing to these attributes, GA represents a fully reusable metal sorbent, applicable also in electrochemical energy technologies, as illustrated with a GA/Pt catalyst derived from Pt⁴⁺-contaminated water.

Persimmon tannin functionalized polyacrylonitrile fiber for highly efficient and selective recovery of Au(III) from aqueous solution

An efficient fibrous adsorbent (PANF-TETA-PT) was prepared via grafting triethylenetetramine (TETA) on polyacrylonitrile fiber (PANF), followed by persimmon tannin (PT) immobilizing. Detailed characterization certified that plenty amounts of amino and phenolic hydroxyl groups existed on the surface of PANF-TETA-PT, which would provide excellent active sites for Au(III) adsorption. The batch characteristic results found that the adsorption equilibrium data could be fitted well with Langmuir equation, while the obtained kinetic data were consistent with the Pseudo-second-order equation. The maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity of PANF-TETA-PT towards Au(III) (801.2 mg/g) was apparently superior than that of the reported adsorbents, and the competitive adsorption showed that PANF-TETA-PT had a good preference to adsorption Au(III) in spite of some coexisting pollutants. The characterization analysis of Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffractometer spectrum (XRD) revealed that the electrostatic attraction and chelation dominated the uptake of Au(III) on PANF-TETA-PT, in which a part of loaded Au(III) was reduced to Au particles with the help of reductive functional groups. Thus, this adsorbent could be as a promising candidate to separation and preconcentration of Au(III) from wastewater.

Magnetic nanostructures functionalized with a derived lysine coating applied to simultaneously remove heavy metal pollutants from environmental systems

The pollution of environmental systems with heavy metals is becoming a serious problem worldwide. These contaminants are one of the main issues in sludge (which is considered waste) and can even have harmful effects if the sludge is not treated properly. Thus, the development of a novel functional magnetic nanoadsorbent based on a derived lysine is reported here, which can be efficiently applied for metal removal from sludge. Magnetic nanoparticles were coated with silica layer and further modified by covalent bonding of derived lysine. The morphology of the nanomaterial, its nano-size and the silica layer thickness were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. The successful silanization of the lysine derivative to the silica-coated magnetic nanostructures was investigated by several physicochemical characterization techniques, while the magnetic properties were measured with a vibrating sample magnetometer. The synthesized nanostructures were used as adsorbents for simultaneous removal of most critical heavy metals (Cr, Zn, Cu) from real complex sludge suspensions. The main practical adsorption parameters, pH of the native stabilized sludge, adsorbent amount, time, and adsorbent regeneration were investigated. The results show promising adsorption properties among currently available adsorbents (the total equilibrium adsorption capacity was 24.5 mg/g) from the sludge with satisfactory nanoadsorbent reusability and its rapid removal. The stability of the nanoadsorbent in the sludge, an important but often neglected practical parameter for efficient removal, was verified. This work opens up new possibilities for the development of high-quality magnetic nanoadsorbents for metal pollutants applied in various complicated environmental fields and enables waste recovery.

Precious metals recovery from aqueous solutions using a new adsorbent material

Platinum group metals (PGMs) palladium, platinum, and ruthenium represent the key materials for automotive exhaust gas treatment. Since there are no adequate alternatives, the importance of these metals for the automotive industry is steadily rising. The high value of PGMs in spent catalysts justifies their recycling. Therefore, it is really important to recovery platinum group metals from aqueous solutions. Of the many PGMs recovery procedures, adsorption is a process with a good efficiency, but an important role is played by the adsorbent material used into the process. In order to improve the adsorption properties of materials were developed new methods for chemical modification of the solid supports, through functionalization with different extractants. In present paper a new adsorbent material (Chitosan-DB18C6) was used for PGMs recovery. The new adsorbent material was produced by impregnating Chitosan with dibenzo-18-crown-6-ether using Solvent Impregnated Resin (SIR) method. The crown ethers were chosen as extractant due to their known ability to bind metallic ions, whether they are symmetrically or unsymmetrically substituted. In order to determine the PGMs recovery efficiency for new prepared adsorbent material the equilibrium and kinetic studies were performed. Also, to study the PGMs adsorption mechanism the experimental data were modelled using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second order kinetic models. Experimental data were fitted with three equilibrium isotherm models: Langmuir, Freundlich and Sips. The results proved that new adsorbent material (Chitosan-DB18C6) is an efficient adsorbent for PGMs recovery from aqueous solutions.

Purification and Characterization of Resistant Dextrin

In this study, an efficient method for the purification of resistant dextrin (RD) using membrane filtration and anion exchange resin decolorization was developed, then the purified RD was characterized. In the membrane filtration stage, suspended solids in RD were completely removed, and the resulting product had a negligible turbidity of 2.70 ± 0.18 NTU. Furthermore, approximately half of the pigments were removed. Static decolorization experiments revealed that the D285 anion exchange resin exhibited the best decolorization ratio (D%), 84.5 ± 2.03%, and recovery ratio (R%), 82.8 ± 1.41%, among all the tested resins. Under optimal dynamic decolorization conditions, the D% and R% of RD were 86.26 ± 0.63% and 85.23 ± 0.42%, respectively. The decolorization efficiency of the D285 resin was superior to those of activated carbon and H2O2. Moreover, the chemical characteristics and molecular weight of RD did not change significantly after purification. The nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of RD showed the formation of new glycosidic linkages that are resistant to digestive enzymes. The superior water solubility (99.14%), thermal stability (up to 200 °C), and rheological properties of RD make it possible to be widely used in food industry.

Facile cross-link method to synthesize chitosan-based adsorbent with superior selectivity toward gold ions: Batch and column studies

The recovery of gold from wastewater has received significant attention in the last years due to its high economic value and low availability. A novel chitosan-based adsorbent (CS-GTU) was successfully synthesized by using formaldehyde as a crosslinker between chitosan and guanylthiourea, and applied for selective adsorption of Au^III from an aqueous medium. Through batch experiments, the maximum adsorption capacity of CS-GTU for Au^III could reach up to 695.63 mg/g at pH 5.0, and the adsorption process followed the Pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, indicating that the monolayer chemisorption possibly occurred on the adsorbent surfaces. The adsorption was an enthalpy driven and spontaneous chemical process based on thermodynamic analysis. Furthermore, the adsorbent has demonstrated outstanding selectivity toward Au^III from multi-metallic solutions, and five cycled experiments of adsorption-desorption showed that CS-GTU could be efficiently regenerated. Experimental breakthrough curves were successfully simulated by using the Thomas model, which can fit the experimental data with the correlated curve (R² > 0.9) well. This improvement in adsorption was a consequence of the complexation and electrostatic attraction of gold ions with the abundant sulfur/nitrogen-containing groups. The CS-GTU beads can be considered as a suitable and efficient adsorbent for gold ions in aqueous solutions.

Recovery and reduction of Au(III) from mixed metal solution by thiourea-resorcinol-formaldehyde microspheres

To develop a novel adsorbent that can efficiently and rapidly recover gold from the leaching solution of electronic appliances, thiourea-resorcinol-formaldehyde resin microspheres (TRF) were prepared by a one-pot solvothermal method. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), thermogravimetric (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron micrograph and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM and SEM-EDS) were used to analyze the morphology and physical properties of TRF microspheres. The first time, TRF was successfully used to capture gold ions. The results showed that it had very high absorption capacity (1432 mg·g^-1), good selectivity (Au(III) ≫ Fe³⁺ > Ni²⁺ > Co²⁺ ≈ Cu²⁺ > Al³⁺ > Na⁺ ≈ K⁺) and excellent reuse performance for gold ions. Based on the study of adsorption isotherms and kinetics, Au(III) adsorption on TRF is mainly chemisorption and the adsorption sites are uniform. In acidic systems, Au(III) was reduced by TRF and deposited on TRF as elemental gold. This work provides the possibility to further develop the application of sulfur- and nitrogen-containing polymer materials in gold recovery from mixed metal solution.

Emerging technologies for the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from the end-of-life electronic wastes: a review on progress, challenges, and perspectives

The demand for rare earth elements (REEs) has significantly increased due to their indispensable uses in integrated circuits of modern technology. However, due to the extensive use of high-tech applications in our daily life and the depletion of their primary ores, REE's recovery from secondary sources is today needed. REEs have now attracted attention to policymakers and scientists to develop novel recovery technologies for materials' supply sustainability. This paper summarizes the recent progress for the recovery of REEs using various emerging technologies such as bioleaching, biosorption, cryo-milling, electrochemical processes and nanomaterials, siderophores, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, and supercritical CO₂. The challenges facing this recovery are discussed comprehensively and some possible improvements are presented. This work also highlights the economic and engineering aspects of the recovery of REE from waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Finally, this review suggests that greener and low chemical consuming technologies, such as siderophores and electrochemical processes, are promising for the recovery of REEs present in small quantities. These technologies present also a potential for large-scale application.

Facile preparation of L-cysteine-modified cellulose microspheres as a low-cost adsorbent for selective and efficient adsorption of Au(III) from the aqueous solution

A facile method to synthesize adsorbent based on cellulose modified by amino acid was developed. The novel L-cysteine-functionalized adsorbent for Au(III) recovery was synthesized via radiation grafting technique. Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was grafted on the surface of microcrystalline cellulose microsphere (MCC); next, ring-opening reaction was performed to immobilize L-cysteine. The adsorption abilities of the adsorbent (CysR) were tested. Batch experiments suggested that the maximum adsorption capacity of Au(III) is 714.28 mg/g calculated by Langmuir model. The adsorption kinetic data was followed by pseudo-second-order model. CysR showed excellent selectivity for Au(III) even the concentration of competing ions was all ten times than that of Au(III). The column experiments revealed that Au(III) could be efficiently adsorbed by CysR competition with equal amounts of Ni(II) and Zn(II). Moreover, XPS analysis demonstrated that the adsorbed Au(III) was reduced to Au(I) and Au(0). The adsorption performance certified that CysR was a promising adsorbent for Au(III) recovery.

Platinum (IV) Recovery from Waste Solutions by Adsorption onto Dibenzo-30-crown-10 Ether Immobilized on Amberlite XAD7 Resin-Factorial Design Analysis

Platinum is a precious metal with many applications, such as: catalytic converters, laboratory equipment, electrical contacts and electrodes, digital thermometers, dentistry, and jewellery. Due to its broad usage, it is essential to recover it from waste solutions resulted out of different technological processes in which it is used. Over the years, several recovery techniques were developed, adsorption being one of the simplest, effective and economical method used for platinum recovery. In the present paper a new adsorbent material (XAD7-DB30C10) for Pt (IV) recovery was used. Produced adsorbent material was characterized by X-ray dispersion (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis. Adsorption isotherms, kinetic models, thermodynamic parameters and adsorption mechanism are presented in this paper. Experimental data were fitted using three non-linear adsorption isotherms: Langmuir, Freundlich and Sips, being better fitted by Sips adsorption isotherm. Obtained kinetic data were correlated well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the chemical sorption was the rate-limiting step. Thermodynamic parameters (ΔG°, ΔH°, ΔS°) showed that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. After adsorption, metallic platinum was recovered from the exhausted adsorbent material by thermal treatment. Adsorption process optimisation by design of experiments was also performed, using as input obtained experimental data, and taking into account that initial platinum concentration and contact time have a significant effect on the adsorption capacity. From the optimisation process, it has been found that the maximum adsorption capacity is obtained at the maximum variation domains of the factors. By optimizing the process, a maximum adsorption capacity of 15.03 mg g⁻¹ was achieved at a contact time of 190 min, initial concentration of 141.06 mg L⁻¹ and the temperature of 45 °C.

Selective Adsorption, Reduction, and Separation of Au(III) from Aqueous Solution with Amine-Type Non-Woven Fabric Adsorbents

Herein, adsorption, separation, and reduction of Au(III) from its aqueous solution were studied with different amine-type, non-woven fabric (NF) adsorbents fabricated with radiation-induced graft polymerization. The adsorbents exhibited different adsorption capacities of Au(III) over a concentration range of hydrochloric acid (HCl) from 5 mM to 5 M, and the diethylamine (DEA)-type adsorbent performed best under all test conditions. The DEA-type adsorbent was inert toward other metal ions, including Cu(II), Pb(II), Ni(II), Zn(II) and Li(I), within the fixed concentration range of HCl. Flow-through adsorption tests indicated DEA-type adsorbent exhibited a rapid recovery and high adsorption capacity of 3.23 mmol/g. Meanwhile, DEA-type adsorbent also exhibited high selectivity and rapid extraction for Au(III) from its mixed solution with Pt(IV) and Pd(II). After adsorption, the reduction of Au(III) was confirmed by XRD spectra, TEM, and digital micrograph images. The results indicated that nano-sized Au particles were mainly concentrated on the adsorbent in 5 mM HCl solution. In 1 M HCl solution, not only nano-sized Au particles were found, but also micro-size Au plates precipitation occurred. This study provides a novel material for selective and efficient gold uptake from aqueous solution.
