Toxicity of benzophenone-3 and its biodegradation in a freshwater microalga Scenedesmus obliquus

ChlorTox scale assessment, greenness, and whiteness evaluation of selective spectrophotometric analysis of dimenhydrinate and cinnarizine

Nausea and vomiting are considered common series side effects induced by chemotherapy treatment in cancer patients. This annoying side effect can impair the patient's compliance to cancer treatment and affect their quality of life. Dimenhydrinate and cinnarizine in combined pharmaceutical dosage form is used to control chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting in cancer patients. For safety, selective spectrophotometric methods based on novel dual resolution strategies were introduced to estimate dimenhydrinate and cinnarizine in presence of their harmful impurities namely benzophenone and 1- (diphenylmethyl)piperazine, respectively. These methods namely, dual ratio difference (DRD), dual ratio extraction (DRE) and dual absorbance extraction coupled with dual ratio extraction (DAE-DRE) were successfully performed to simultaneously analyze the drug of interests dimenhydrinate and cinnarizine in their pure form, synthetic mixtures and in market dosage form. Linearity ranges were 6.0-60.0 μg/mL and 3.0-30.0 μg/mL for dimenhydrinate and cinnarizine, respectively with good recovery% of Mean ± SD for all the proposed methods 99.82 ± 0.48, 99.79 ± 0.40, 100.14 ± 0.82, 100.03 ± 0.69, respectively. ICH guidelines were adhered in accordance with confirming validation of the proposed methods where fulfilling results were accomplished. Various unified greenness and whiteness assessment tools, such as the chlorTox scale, greenness index via spider chart, AGREE (The Analytical Greenness Metric), green certificate, and the RGB12 algorithm were employed in this research to assess the greenness and sustainability of the introduced UV-spectrophotometric methods in comparison to the reported HPLC method. As a result, these methods hold significant potential for utilization in the quality control department of pharmaceutical companies, contributing to enhanced pharmaceutical product analysis and overall sustainability practices.

Toxicity of the sunscreen UV filter benzophenone-3 (OBZ) to the microalga Selenastrum capricornutum: An insight into OBZ's damage to photosynthesis and respiration

Oxybenzone (OBZ; benzophenone-3, CAS# 131-57-7), as a new pollutant and ultraviolet absorbent, shows a significant threat to the survival of phytoplankton. This study aims to explore the acute toxic effects of OBZ on the growth of the microalga Selenastrum capricornutum, as well as the mechanisms for its damage to the primary metabolic pathways of photosynthesis and respiration. The results demonstrated that the concentrations for 50 % of maximal effect (EC50) of OBZ for S. capricornutum were 9.07 mg L-1 and 8.54 mg L-1 at 72 h and 96 h, respectively. A dosage of 4.56 mg L-1 OBZ significantly lowered the photosynthetic oxygen evolution rate of S. capricornutum in both light and dark conditions for a duration of 2 h, while it had no effect on the respiratory oxygen consumption rate under darkness. OBZ caused a significant decline in the efficiency of photosynthetic electron transport due to its damage to photosystem II (PSII), thereby decreasing the photosynthetic oxygen evolution rate. Over-accumulated H2O2 was produced under light due to the damage caused by OBZ to the donor and acceptor sides of PSII, resulting in increased peroxidation of cytomembranes and inhibition of algal respiration. OBZ's damage to photosynthesis and respiration will hinder the conversion and reuse of energy in algal cells, which is an important reason that OBZ has toxic effects on S. capricornutum. The present study indicated that OBZ has an acute toxic effect on the microalga S. capricornutum. In the two most important primary metabolic pathways in algae, photosynthesis is more sensitive to the toxicity of OBZ than respiration, especially in the dark.

Integrated physio-biochemical and transcriptomic analysis reveals the joint toxicity mechanisms of two typical antidepressants fluoxetine and sertraline on Microcystis aeruginosa

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants are of increasing concern worldwide due to their ubiquitous occurrence and detrimental effects on aquatic organisms. However, little is known regarding their effects on the dominant bloom-forming cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa. Here, we investigated the individual and joint effects of two typical SSRIs fluoxetine (FLX) and sertraline (SER) on M. aeruginosa at physio-biochemical and molecular levels. Results showed that FLX and SER had strong growth inhibitory effects on M. aeruginosa with the 96-h median effect concentrations (EC50s) of 362 and 225 μg/L, respectively. Besides, the mixtures showed an additive effect on microalgal growth. Meanwhile, both individual SSRIs and their mixtures can inhibit photosynthetic pigment synthesis, cause oxidative damage, destroy cell membrane, and promote microcystin-leucine-arginine (MC-LR) synthesis and release. Moreover, the mixtures enhanced the damage to photosynthesis, antioxidant system, and cell membrane and facilitated MC-LR synthesis and release compared to individuals. Furthermore, transcriptomic analysis revealed that the dysregulation of the key genes related to transport, photosystem, protein synthesis, and non-ribosomal peptide structures was the fundamental molecular mechanism underlying the physio-biochemical responses of M. aeruginosa. These findings provide a better understanding of the toxicity mechanisms of SSRIs to microalgae and their risks to aquatic ecosystems.

Effects of benzophenone-3 and its metabolites on the marine diatom Chaetoceros neogracilis: Underlying mechanisms and environmental implications

The wide application of benzophenones (BPs), such as benzophenone-3 (BP3), as an ingredient in sunscreens, cosmetics, coatings, and plastics, has led to their global contamination in aquatic environments. Using the marine diatom Chaetoceros neogracilis as a model, this study assessed the toxic effects and mechanisms of BP3 and its two major metabolites (BP8 and BP1). The results showed that BP3 exhibited higher toxicity on C. neogracilis than BP8 and BP1, with their 72-h median effective concentrations being 0.4, 0.8 and 4 mg/L, respectively. Photosynthesis efficiencies were significantly reduced after exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of the three benzophenones, while cell viability, membrane integrity, membrane potential, and metabolic activities could be further impaired at their higher concentrations. Comparative transcriptomic analysis, followed by gene ontology and KEGG pathway enrichment analyses unraveled that all the three tested benzophenones disrupted photosynthesis and nitrogen metabolism of the diatom through alteration of similar pathways. The toxic effect of BP3 was also attributable to its unique inhibitory effects on eukaryotic ribosome biosynthesis and DNA replication. Taken together, our findings underscore that benzophenones may pose a significant threat to photosynthesis, oxygen production, primary productivity, carbon fixation, and the nitrogen cycle of diatom in coastal waters worldwide.

Physiological-biochemical responses and transcriptomic analysis reveal the effects and mechanisms of sulfamethoxazole on the carbon fixation function of Chlorella pyrenoidosa

The occurrence of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is characterized by low concentration and pseudo-persistence. However, the toxic effects and mechanisms of SMX, especially for low concentration and long-term exposure, are still not clear. This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of SMX on carbon fixation-related biological processes of Chlorella pyrenoidosa at population, physiological-biochemical, and transcriptional levels. Results showed that 1-1000 μg/L SMX significantly inhibited the dry weight and carbon fixation rate of C. pyrenoidosa during 21 d. The upregulation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities, as well as the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA) demonstrated that SMX posed oxidative damage to C. pyrenoidosa. SMX inhibited the activity of carbonic anhydrase (CA), and consequently stimulated the activity of Rubisco. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that SMX concentration was positively correlated with Rubisco and CAT while exposure time was negatively correlated with CA. Transcriptional analysis showed that the synthesis of chlorophyll-a was stabilized by regulating the diversion of protoporphyrin IX and the chlorophyll cycle. Meanwhile, multiple CO2 compensation mechanisms, including photorespiratory, C4-like CO2 compensation and purine metabolism pathways were triggered in response to the CO2 requirements of Rubisco. This study provides a scientific basis for the comprehensive assessment of the ecological risk of SMX.

The environmental risks of antiviral drug arbidol in eutrophic lake: Interactions with Microcystis aeruginosa

The environmental risks resulting from the increasing antivirals in water are largely unknown, especially in eutrophic lakes, where the complex interactions between algae and drugs would alter hazards. Herein, the environmental risks of the antiviral drug arbidol towards the growth and metabolism of Microcystis aeruginosa were comprehensively investigated, as well as its biotransformation mechanism by algae. The results indicated that arbidol was toxic to Microcystis aeruginosa within 48 h, which decreased the cell density, chlorophyll-a, and ATP content. The activation of oxidative stress increased the levels of reactive oxygen species, which caused lipid peroxidation and membrane damage. Additionally, the synthesis and release of microcystins were promoted by arbidol. Fortunately, arbidol can be effectively removed by Microcystis aeruginosa mainly through biodegradation (50.5% at 48 h for 1.0 mg/L arbidol), whereas the roles of bioadsorption and bioaccumulation were limited. The biodegradation of arbidol was dominated by algal intracellular P450 enzymes via loss of thiophenol and oxidation, and a higher arbidol concentration facilitated the degradation rate. Interestingly, the toxicity of arbidol was reduced after algal biodegradation, and most of the degradation products exhibited lower toxicity than arbidol. This study revealed the environmental risks and transformation behavior of arbidol in algal bloom waters.

Recent advances in remediation strategies for mitigating the impacts of emerging pollutants in water and ensuring environmental sustainability

The proliferation of emerging pollutants (EPs), encompassing a range of substances such as phthalates, phenolics, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, personal care products, surfactants, and disinfection agents, has become a significant global concern due to their potential risks to the environment and human well-being. Over the past two decades, numerous research studies have investigated the presence of EPs in wastewater and aquatic ecosystems, with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) categorizing these newly introduced chemical compounds as emerging contaminants due to their poorly understood impact. EPs have been linked to adverse health effects in humans, including genotoxic and cytotoxic effects, as well as conditions such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and reproductive abnormalities, often associated with their estrogenic action. Microalgae have shown promise in the detoxification of both inorganic and organic contaminants, and several large-scale microalgal systems for wastewater treatment have been developed. However, the progress of algal bioremediation can be influenced by accidental contaminations and operational challenges encountered in pilot-scale research. Microalgae employ various processes, such as bioadsorption, biouptake, and biodegradation, to effectively remediate EPs. During microalgal biodegradation, complex chemical compounds are transformed into simpler substances through catalytic metabolic degradation. Integrating algal bioremediation with existing treatment methodologies offers a viable approach for efficiently eliminating EPs from wastewater. This review focuses on the use of algal-based biological remediation processes for wastewater treatment, the environmental impacts of EPs, and the challenges associated with implementing algal bioremediation systems to effectively remove emerging pollutants.

Long-term effects of embryonic exposure to benzophenone-3 on neurotoxicity and behavior of adult zebrafish

Benzophenone-3 (BP-3) is the most widely used ultraviolet filter (UV filter) in industries to avoid UV radiation damage. BP-3 is added to most sunscreens to protect the skin, hair, and lips from sun rays. It results in continuous discharge into aquatic environments, leading to aquatic biota and human's continuous exposure. Consequences of BP-3 exposure on the physiology and behavior of aquatic animals, mainly zebrafish, have been investigated, including their neurotoxic effects. However, little is known about its consequences in long-term developmental endpoints. This study aimed to investigate the long-term effects of embryonic BP-3 exposure on biomarkers of neurotoxicity in zebrafish. For this, we exposed embryos to 5, 10, and 20 μg∙L-1 BP-3 concentration and let fish grow to adulthood (5mpf). We evaluated anxiety-like behavior, social preference, aggressiveness, and enzymatic activity of the antioxidant defenses system and neurotoxic biomarkers (Glutathione S-transferase -GST, catalase -CAT, and acetylcholinesterase -AChE) in adult zebrafish. Enzymatic activities were also investigated in larvae immediately after BP-3 exposure. Animals early exposed to BP-3 presented anxiety-like behaviors and decreased social preference, but aggressiveness was not altered. In general, exposure to BP-3 leads to altered enzymatic activity, which persists into adulthood. GST activity increased in embryos and adults, while CAT activity decreased in both life stages. AChE activity enhanced only at the larval stage (96 hpf). The long-term behavioral and biochemical effects of BP-3 highlight the need for abolishing or restricting the compound from personal care products, which are continually disposed into the environment and threaten the biota and human health.

Occurrence of antibiotics in reclaimed water, and their uptake dynamics, phytotoxicity, and metabolic fate in Lolium perenne L

Reclaimed water (RW) has been extensively used for irrigation in agriculture, yet the occurrence of antibiotics in real RW, and their toxicity, uptake dynamics and metabolic fate still needs comprehensive exploration. In this study, we investigated the residual concentrations of nineteen antibiotics in the RW from four wastewater treatment plants, and determined their toxicity on plant at environment-relevant concentration. Total found concentrations of these antibiotics ranged from 623.66 ng L-1 to 1536.96 ng L-1, which decreased 10.3 and 19.4 % of roots' length and weight. Uptake dynamics analysis of the most hazardous antibiotic, norfloxacin (NFX) showed increasing amounts in the roots and leaves up to 3087.71 μg g-1. Ryegrass also can remove >80 % of 100 μg L-1 NFX being achieved by biodegradation through ring cleavage, decarboxylation, defluorination, hydrogenation, methylation and oxidation. Toxicity assessment of the identified byproducts showed their more toxic effect on fish, daphnia and algae. This study extended our understanding of the fate of antibiotics in plants during irrigation with reclaimed water, and emphasized its safety and pollutants' biomagnification concerns.

Toxicity of benzyl paraben on aquatic as well as terrestrial life

Parabens are derivatives of alkyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and come in different classes. These compounds are primarily used as antimicrobial preservative agents in many commercial products, including cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Accordingly, Benzyl paraben (BeP) is known to be a potential endocrine disruptor. The aim of this study was to determine the toxicity of benzyl paraben (BeP) on aquatic and terrestrial organisms, specifically Scenedesmus sp., Moina macrocopa, and Eisenia fetida. All the organisms were treated with different concentrations of BeP (0.025 mg/L and 1000 mg/L), and LC25, LC50, and LC90 values were used to measure the toxicity levels. Results showed the LC values of BeP for M. macrocopa (3.3 mg/L, 4.7 mg/L, 7.3 mg/L) and E. fetida (173.2 mg/L, 479.8 mg/L, 1062 mg/L), respectively. Toxicity tests on green algae (Scenedesmus sp.) were conducted, the green algae were subjected to various BeP concentration. At 50 mg/L of BeP, cell viability was reduced to 56.2% and the MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay indicated 35.4% viable cells. The chlorophyll value and the biochemical parameters of the algal cells were corroborative with the cell viability test. Lethal indices (LC50) for M. macrocopa and E. fetida were evaluated for their toxicity on biochemical properties and were found to be catalase (0.111 mg/L, 0.5 mg/L), lipid peroxidation (0.072 mg/L, 0.056 mg/L), and total protein (0.309 mg/L, 0.314 mg/L), respectively. Overall, this study demonstrated the toxic impact of BeP on non-target aquatic as well as terrestrial species.

Unraveling the combined toxicity and removal mechanisms of fluoxetine and sertraline co-contaminants by the freshwater microalga Chlorella pyrenoidosa

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as fluoxetine (FLX) and sertraline (SER), are among the most widely detected pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments, and they usually occur as mixtures. However, little is known about the combined toxicity of SSRI mixtures to microalgae and the associated removal mechanisms. This study investigated the combined toxicity of FLX and SER to the growth, photosynthetic activity, and antioxidant system of Chlorella pyrenoidosa and their removal mechanisms. The results showed that FLX and SER strongly inhibited microalgal growth with 96 h EC50 values of 493 and 61.1 μg/L, respectively. Additionally, the combined toxicity of FLX and SER towards microalgal growth exhibited an additive effect. After 4 days of short-term exposure, FLX, SER, and their mixtures caused photosynthetic damage and oxidative stress in microalgae, and the mixture's toxicity was stronger than those of individuals. However, the adverse effects on microalgal growth, photosynthetic activity, and antioxidant system were alleviated with increasing exposure time. Meanwhile, C. pyrenoidosa efficiently removed FLX (67.59%-99.08%) and SER (94.92%-99.11%) individually after 11 days of cultivation. Biodegradation (59.25%-86.21%) was the prominent removal mechanism of FLX, while both biodegradation (48.08%-88.17%) and bioaccumulation (4.74%-43.38%) contributed significantly to SER removal. The co-existence of FLX and SER lowered the removal rate and biodegradation amount of both compounds. Besides, SER inhibited C. pyrenoidosa's N-demethylation and O-dealkylation of FLX, while co-existing with FLX inhibited the excretion of the N-deamination product of SER from microalgal cells. Furthermore, the principal component analysis indicated that the removal performance of FLX, SER, and their mixtures correlated strongly to the microalgae's physiological and biochemical states. These results highlighted the significance of co-contamination during ecological risk assessments and microalgae-based bioremediation of SSRIs.

Toxic effects and molecular mechanisms of estuarian crustaceans (Scylla paramamosain) exposed to five commonly used benzophenones

Benzophenones (BPs) are commonly used in personal care products like sunscreens and are increasingly being released into the environment, raising concerns about their potential ecotoxic effects. BPs as emerging environmental contaminants, little is known about their toxic effects on estuarine organisms. This study firstly investigated the toxic effects of five commonly used BPs on mud crabs (Scylla paramamosain). The crabs were exposed to varying concentrations of BPs for 14 days. The results showed that BPs caused damage to antioxidant systems in crabs. Transcriptome sequencing revealed that BP-3 and BP-1 had a greater impact on the crabs compared to the other BPs. Specifically, BP-1 and BP-3 caused severe damage to organelles and ribosomes. BP affected catalytic activity and hydrolase activity, BP-2 affected phosphoenolpyruate carboxykinase activity, and BP-4 affected tRNA aminoacylation and hydrolase activity. These findings can enhance our understanding of the ecotoxicity of BPs and may help to protect estuarine ecosystems.

Status quo on identified transformation products of organic ultraviolet filters and their persistence

Organic micropollutants of concern-including organic UV filters (UVF)-are getting increasing attention. Personal care products such as sunscreens or cosmetic articles often contain large quantities of UVF. These substances enter the environment either directly (during outdoor activities) or indirectly (via sewages from households). Therefore, the removal or degradation of UVF by natural or technical treatment processes is important to understand. UVF are often incompletely removed and transformed to side products of incomplete mineralization by abiotic and biotic processes. An extensive overview on transformation products (TPs) is essential to systematically identify knowledge gaps and to derive research needs. While there are many reviews on the UVF themselves, the number of reviews which focus on their TPs is limited. Consequently, this review gives an overview on the latest findings regarding TPs of UVF. In this publication, known TPs of UVF, which were formed during abiotic and biotic processes, are reviewed. Target substances were defined and a literature database was reviewed for studies on TPs of the target substances. The first list of studies was shortened stepwise, thus generating a final list of studies which contained only the relevant studies. Since biodegradation is one of the most important pathways for removal of organic compounds from the environment, this review presents an overview on known TPs of organic UVF and their biodegradability, which determines their environmental fate. In this way, all identified TPs of UVF were listed and checked for information on their biodegradability. A total of 2731 records of studies were assessed. Forty-two studies, which assessed 46 processes that lead to the formation of identified TPs, were included in this review. One hundred and seventyseven different TPs resulting from 11 different UVF were identified. Little to no data on the biodegradability was found for TPs. This indicates a severe lack of data on the biodegradability of TPs of organic UVF substances. Since most TPs lack information on biodegradability, further research should provide information on both-identity and biodegradability-of formed TPs to be able to assess their hazardousness for the environment.

Ozone mechanism, kinetics, and toxicity studies of halophenols: Theoretical calculation combined with toxicity experiment

Aromatic disinfection by-products (DBPs), which are generally more toxic than aliphatic DBPs, have attracted increasing attention. The toxicity of 13 typical halophenols on Scenedesmus obliquus was experimentally investigated, and the ozonation mechanism and kinetics of representative halophenols were further studied by quantum chemical calculations. The results showed that the EC₅₀ values of halophenols ranged from 2.74 to 60.23 mg/L, and their toxicity ranked as follows: di-halogenated phenols > mono-halogenated phenols, mixed halogen-substituted phenols > single halogen-substituted phenols, and iodophenols > bromophenols > chlorophenols. The toxicity of halophenols was well described by the electronegativity index (ω) as lg(EC₅₀)^-1 = 6.228ω - 3.869, indicating halophenols capturing electrons as their potential toxicity mechanism. The reactions of O₃ with halophenolate anions were dominated by three mechanisms: 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition, oxygen addition, and single electron transfer. The kinetic calculation indicated that O₃ oxidized aqueous halophenols by reacting with halophenolate anions with the reaction rate constants as high as (0.91-3.47) × 10¹⁰ M^-1 s^-1. The number of halogen substituents affected the k_{O3, cal} values of halophenolate anions, which are in the order of 2,4-dihalophenolate anions >4-halophenolate anions > 2,4,6-trihalophenolate anions. During the ozonation of 2,4,6-tribromophenol (246TBP), the toxic products (dimers and brominated benzoquinones) could be synergistically degraded by O₃ and HO^•. Thus, ozonation is feasible as a strategy to degrade aromatic DBPs.

Benzophenones in the Environment: Occurrence, Fate and Sample Preparation in the Analysis

The ubiquitous presence of emerging contaminants in the environment is an issue of great concern. Notably, for some of them, no established regulation exists. Benzophenones are listed as emerging contaminants, which have been identified in the environment as well as in human fluids, such as urine, placenta, and breast milk. Their accumulation and stability in the environment, combined with the revealed adverse effects on ecosystems including endocrine, reproductive, and other disorders, have triggered significant interest for research. Benzophenones should be extracted from environmental samples and determined for environmental-monitoring purposes to assess their presence and possible dangers. Numerous sample preparation methods for benzophenones in environmental matrices and industrial effluents have been proposed and their detection in more complex matrices, such as fish and sludges, has also been reported. These methods range from classical to more state-of-the-art methods, such as solid-phase extraction, dispersive SPE, LLE, SBSE, etc., and the analysis is mostly completed with liquid chromatography, using several detection modes. This review critically outlines sample preparation methods that have been proposed to date, for the extraction of benzophenones from simple and complex environmental matrices and for cleaning up sample extracts to eliminate potential interfering components that coexist therein. Moreover, it provides a brief overview of their occurrence, fate, and toxicity.

Enhanced rhizoremediation of polychlorinated biphenyls by resuscitation-promoting factor stimulation linked to plant growth promotion and response of functional microbial populations

Rhizoremediation is acknowledged as a green technology for removing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soil. However, rhizoremediation is limited because most soil microorganisms enter into a viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state under PCBs stress. This work was to study the effect of resuscitation-promoting factor (Rpf) on rhizoremediation efficiency of PCBs in alfalfa and rhizosphere microbiological communities. Results suggested that Rpf promoted alfalfa growth in PCB-contaminated soil by improving antioxidant enzymes and detoxification metabolites in alfalfa. After 40 d Rpf treatment, removal rate for five selected PCBs significantly increased by 0.5-2.2 times. Rpf enhanced relative abundances of bphA and bphC responsible for degrading PCBs, and enzymatic activities of metabolizing exogenous compounds in rhizosphere soil. High-throughput sequencing showed that Rpf did not change the dominant microbial population at phyla and genera levels, but caused variation of the bacterial community structures. The promoting function of Rpf was linked to the shift of various key populations having different functions depending on Rpf concentrations. Pseudomonas and Rhizobium spp. enrichment might stimulate PCB degradation and Streptomyces and Bacillus spp. primarily contributed to alfalfa growth. Predicted functions in rhizosphere soil bacterial community indicated Rpf facilitated soil nutrient cycling and environmental adaptation. This study indicated that Rpf was an active additive for strengthening rhizoremediation efficiency of PCB-contaminated soil and enhancing their in-situ remediation.

Removal mechanisms of erythromycin by microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa and toxicity assessment during the treatment process

Microalgae-based biotechnology for antibiotic removal has received increasing attention as an economical and green method. This study investigated the removal mechanism of erythromycin by Chlorella pyrenoidosa and its correlation with the ecotoxic responses of microalgae. The degradation products (DPs) were identified, and their toxicity was predicted. The results indicated that only 4.04 %, 6.28 % and 23.53 % of erythromycin were left after 21-day microalgae treatment in 0.1, 1.0 and 10 mg/L treatments, respectively. Biodegradation contributed 48.62-67.01 %, 16.67-52.32 % and 6.42-24.82 %, while abiotic degradation contributed 8.76-29.61 %, 5.19-41.39 %, and 16.55-51.22 % to erythromycin attenuation in 0.1, 1.0, and 10 mg/L treatments, respectively. The growth and physiological-biochemical parameters of microalgae were slightly affected in low concentration treatment, which may be the main reason that biodegradation was the prominent removal mechanism. By contrast, oxidative damage in high concentration treatment inhibited the cell growth and chlorophyll content of microalgae, which hindered erythromycin biodegradation. In addition, eleven erythromycin degradation products (DPs) were identified during microalgae treatment of 21 days. Seven DPs including DP717, DP715, DP701A, DP701B, DP657, DP643, and DP557, represented higher toxicity to aquatic organisms than erythromycin.

The potential role of betaine in enhancement of microbial-assisted phytoremediation of benzophenone-3 contaminated soil

Benzophenone-3 (BP-3) is an emerging environmental pollutant used in personal care products, helping to reduce the risk of ultraviolet radiation to human skin. The BP-3 removal potential from soil by tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) assisted with Methylophilus sp. FP-6 was explored in our previous study. However, the reduced BP-3 remediation efficiency by FP-6 in soil and the inhibited plant growth by BP-3 limited the application of this phytoremediation strategy. The aim of the present study was to reveal the potential roles of betaine, as the methyl donor of methylotrophic bacteria and plant regulator, in improving the strain FP-6-assisted phytoremediation capacity of BP-3 contaminated soil. The results revealed that strain FP-6 could use betaine as a co-metabolism substrate to enhance the BP-3 degradation activity. About 97.32% BP-3 in soil was effectively removed in the phytoremediation system using tobacco in combination with FP-6 and betaine for 40 d while the concentration of BP-3 in tobacco significantly reduced. Moreover, the biomass and photosynthetic efficiency of plants were remarkably improved through the combined treatment of betaine and strain FP-6. Simultaneously, inoculation of FP-6 in the presence of betaine stimulated the change of local microbial community structure, which might correlate with the production of a series of hydrolases and reductases involved in soil carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycling processes. Meantime, some of the dominant bacteria could secrete various multiple enzymes involved in degrading organic pollutants, such as laccase, to accelerate the demethylation and hydroxylation of BP-3. Overall, the results from this study proposed that the co-metabolic role of betaine could be utilized to strengthen microbial-assisted phytoremediation process by increasing the degradation ability of methylotrophic bacteria and enhancing plant tolerance to BP-3. The present results provide novel insights and perspectives for broadening the engineering application scope of microbial-assisted phytoremediation of organic pollutants without sacrificing economic crop safety.

Microalgae-based removal of pollutants from wastewaters: Occurrence, toxicity and circular economy

The natural and anthropogenic sources of water bodies are contaminated with diverse categories of pollutants such as antibiotics, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, heavy metals, organic compounds, and other industrial chemicals. Depending on the type and the origin of the pollutants, the degree of contamination can be categorized into lower to higher concentrations. Therefore, the removal of hazardous chemicals from the environment is an important aspect. The physical, chemical and biological approaches have been developed and implemented to treat wastewaters. The microbial and algal treatment methods have emerged as a growing field due to their eco-friendly and sustainable approach. Particularly, microalgae emerged as a potential organism for the treatment of contaminated water bodies. The microalgae of the genera Chlorella, Anabaena, Ankistrodesmus, Aphanizomenon, Arthrospira, Botryococcus, Chlamydomonas, Chlorogloeopsis, Dunaliella, Haematococcus, Isochrysis, Nannochloropsis, Porphyridium, Synechococcus, Scenedesmus, and Spirulina reported for the wastewater treatment and biomass production. Microalgae have the potential for adsorption, bioaccumulation, and biodegradation. The microalgal strains can mitigate the hazardous chemicals via their diverse cellular mechanisms. Applications of the microalgae strains were found to be effective for sustainable developments and circular economy due to the production of biomass with the utilization of pollutants.

Is hydrodynamic diameter the decisive factor? - Comparison of the toxic mechanism of nSiO2 and mPS on marine microalgae Heterosigma akashiwo

To investigate the toxic mechanism of SiO₂ nanoparticles (nSiO₂) and polystyrene microplastics (mPS) on microalgae Heterosigma akashiwo, growth inhibition tests were carried out. The growth and biological responses of the algae exposed to nSiO₂ (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 5, 10 and 30 mg L^-1) and mPS (1, 2, 5, 10, 30 and 75 mg L^-1) were explored in f/2 media for 96 h. It was found that the hydrodynamic diameter of the particles seems to be one of the more important factors to influence the algae. nSiO₂ and mPS with similar hydrodynamic diameters have the similar toxic mechanism on H. akashiwo, and the effects were dose- and time-dependent. High concentrations of micro-/nano-particles (MNPs) could inhibit the growth of algal cells, however, low concentrations of MNPs did not restrict or even promoted the growth of algae, known as "Hormesis" phenomenon. The 96 h-EC20 values of nSiO₂ and mPS on H. akashiwo were 2.69 and 10.07 mg L^-1, respectively, and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters indicated that the microalgal photosynthetic system were inhibited. The hydrophilic surface of nSiO₂ increased the likelihood of nSiO₂ binding to the hydrophilic functional group of microalgae, which may account for the slightly stronger toxic effect of nSiO₂ than mPS. The algae continued to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) under stress conditions. Total protein (TP) levels reduced, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) levels increased to maintain ROS levels in the cells. The decrease in adenosine triphosphate (ATPase) indicated an impact on cellular energy metabolism. Cell membrane damage, cytoplasm and organelle efflux under stress were confirmed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) images. This study contributes to the understanding of the size effect of MNPs on the growth of marine microalgae.

Ecotoxicological effects of the antidepressant fluoxetine and its removal by the typical freshwater microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa

The antidepressant fluoxetine (FLX) has gained increasing attention due to its frequent detection in aquatic environments and negative effects on non-target organisms. However, knowledge on the ecotoxicological effects of FLX and its removal by microalgae is still limited. In this study, the ecotoxicological effects of FLX (10 -1000 μg/L) were assessed using batch cultures of the freshwater microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa for 10 days based on changes in growth, antioxidant response, and photosynthetic process. The removal efficiency, removal mechanism, and degradation pathway of FLX by C. pyrenoidosa were also investigated. The results showed that the growth of C. pyrenoidosa was inhibited by FLX with a 4 d EC₅₀ of 0.464 mg/L. Additionally, FLX significantly inhibited photosynthesis and caused oxidative stress on day 4. However, C. pyrenoidosa can produce resistance and acclimatize to FLX, as reflected by the declining growth inhibition rate, recovered photosynthetic efficiency, and disappearance of oxidative stress on day 10. Despite the toxicity of FLX, C. pyrenoidosa showed 41.2%- 100% removal of FLX after 10 days of exposure. Biodegradation was the primary removal mechanism, accounting for 88.2%- 92.8% of the total removal of FLX. A total of five metabolites were found in the degradation processes of FLX, which showed less toxicity than FLX. The main degradation pathways were proposed as demethylation, O-dealkylation, hydroxylation, and N-acylation. Our results not only highlight the potential application of microalgae in FLX purification, but also provide insight into the fate and ecological risk of FLX in aquatic environments.

Beach showers as sources of contamination for sunscreen pollution in marine protected areas and areas of intensive beach tourism in Hawaii, USA

In 2019, sands in nearby runoff streams from public beach showers were sampled on three islands in the State of Hawaii and tested for over 18 different petrochemical UV filters. Beach sands that are directly in the plume discharge of beach showers on three of the islands of Hawaii (Maui, Oahu, Hawai'i) were found to be contaminated with a wide array of petrochemical-based UV-filters that are found in sunscreens. Sands from beach showers across all three islands had a mean concentration of 5619 ng/g of oxybenzone with the highest concentration of 34,518 ng/g of oxybenzone at a beach shower in the Waikiki area of Honolulu. Octocrylene was detected at a majority of the beach shower locations, with a mean concentration of 296.3 ng/g across 13 sampling sites with the highest concentration of 1075 ng/g at the beach shower in Waikiki. Avobenzone, octinoxate, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor and benzophenone-2 were detected, as well as breakdown products of oxybenzone, including benzophenone-1, 2,2'-dihydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone, and 4-hydroxybenzophenone. Dioxybenzone (DHMB) presented the highest concentration in water (75.4 ng/mL), whereas octocrylene was detected in all water samples. Some of these same target analytes were detected in water samples on coral reefs that are adjacent to the beach showers. Risk assessments for both sand and water samples at a majority of the sampling sites had a Risk Quotient > 1, indicating that these chemicals could pose a serious threat to beach zones and coral reef habitats. There are almost a dozen mitigation options that could be employed to quickly reduce contaminant loads associated with discharges from these beach showers, like those currently being employed (post-study sampling and analysis) in the State of Hawaii, including banning the use of sunscreens using petrochemical-based UV filters or educating tourists before they arrive on the beach.

Transgenerational effects of polyethylene microplastic fragments containing benzophenone-3 additive in Daphnia magna

Maternal exposure to microplastics (MPs) plays an important role in the fitness of unexposed progeny. In this study, the transgenerational effects of polyethylene MP fragments (17.35 ± 5.50 µm) containing benzophenone-3 (BP-3; 2.85 ± 0.16% w/w) on chronic toxicity (21 d) in Daphnia magna were investigated across four generations. Only D. magna in the F0 generation was exposed to MP fragments, MP/BP-3 fragments, and BP-3 leachate to identify the transgenerational effect in the F3 generation. The mortality of D. magna induced by MP and MP/BP-3 fragments was recovered in the F3 generation, but somatic growth and reproduction significantly decreased compared to the control. Additionally, reproduction of D. magna exposed to BP-3 leachate significantly decreased in the F3 generation. These findings confirmed the transgenerational effects of MP fragment and BP-3 additive on D. magna. Particularly, the adverse effect on D. magna reproduction seemed to be cumulative across four generations for MP/BP-3 fragments, while it was an acclimation trend for BP-3 leachate. However, there was no significant difference in global DNA methylation in D. magna across four generations, thus requiring a gene-specific DNA methylation study to identify different epigenetic transgenerational inheritance.

Transcriptomics unveiled metabolic perturbations in Desmodesmus quadricauda by sulfacetamide: Key functional genes involved in the tolerance and biodegradation process

Antibiotic contamination in the environment has significant adverse effects on benthic microorganisms, which causes dysfunction of normal ecological processes. However, in-depth molecular mechanisms underlying the potential ecological impacts of these emerging pollutants are poorly understood. In this study, metabolic perturbations in a freshwater microalga, Desmodesmus quadricauda by sulfacetamide (SFM) were investigated using transcriptomics. The results found 28 genes in the tricarboxylic acid cycle and oxidative phosphorolysis pathways were significantly downregulated by 3.97 to 6.07, and 2.47 to 5.99 folds by 0.1 and 1 mg L^-1 SFM, respectively. These results indicated that SFM disrupted the microalgal cellular activities through inhibition of energy metabolism. Whilst, the upregulated genes have been most enriched in porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism (hemE, hemL, hemY, chlD, chlP, PAO, and CAO), and arachidonic acid metabolism (GGT1_5 and gpx). Expression of these genes was significantly upregulated by up to 3.36 times for tolerance against SFM. Moreover, the genes encoding decarboxylase, oxidoreductases, α-amylase, hydrolases, O-acetyltransferase, and lyase were upregulated by >2 folds, which can induce di/hydroxylation, decarboxylation, bond cleavage and deamination. These findings provide insights into the molecular mechanisms of the ecotoxicological effects of antibiotics on microalgae, and supply useful information for their environmental risk assessment and management.

Elucidating the biodegradation pathway and catabolic genes of benzophenone-3 in Rhodococcus sp. S2-17

A new bacterium, Rhodococcus sp. S2-17, which could completely degrade an emerging organic pollutant, benzophenone-3 (BP-3), was isolated from contaminated sediment through an enrichment procedure, and its BP-3 catabolic pathway and genes were identified through metabolic intermediate and transcriptomic analyses and biochemical and genetic studies. Metabolic intermediate analysis suggested that strain S2-17 may degrade BP-3 using a catabolic pathway progressing via the intermediates BP-1, 2,4,5-trihydroxy-benzophenone, 3-hydroxy-4-benzoyl-2,4-hexadienedioic acid, 4-benzoyl-3-oxoadipic acid, 3-oxoadipic acid, and benzoic acid. A putative BP-3 catabolic gene cluster including cytochrome P450, flavin-dependent oxidoreductase, hydroxyquinol 1,2-dioxygenase, maleylacetate reductase, and α/β hydrolase genes was identified through genomic and transcriptomic analyses. Genes encoding the cytochrome P450 complex that demethylates BP-3 to BP-1 were functionally verified through protein expression, and the functions of the other genes were also verified through knockout mutant construction and intermediate analysis. This study suggested that strain S2-17 might have acquired the ability to catabolize BP-3 by recruiting the cytochrome P450 complex and α/β hydrolase, which hydrolyzes 4-benzoyl-3-oxoadipic acid to benzoic acid and 3-oxoadipic acid, genes, providing insights into the recruitment of genes of for the catabolism of emerging organic pollutants.

Up-to-Date Overview of the Use of Natural Ingredients in Sunscreens

The photoprotective skincare segment is in high demand to meet consumer concerns on UV-induced skin damage, with a recent trend towards sunscreen alternatives with a natural origin. In this study, the use of natural ingredients, either from terrestrial or marine origin, in a panel of 444 sunscreen commercial formulations (2021) was analyzed. Ingredients from terrestrial organisms represent the large majority found in the analyzed sunscreen formulations (48%), whereas marine ingredients are present only in 13% of the analyzed products. A deeper analysis regarding the most prevalent families of ingredients from terrestrial and marine organisms used as top ingredients is also presented, as well as their mechanisms of action. This study provides an up-to-date overview of the sunscreen market regarding the use of natural ingredients, which is of relevance for scientists involved in the development of new sunscreens to identify opportunities for innovation.

Oxybenzone contamination from sunscreen pollution and its ecological threat to Hanauma Bay, Oahu, Hawaii, U.S.A

Hanauma Bay is a 101-acre bay created by the partial collapse of a volcanic cone and once supported a vibrant coral reef system. It is the most popular swimming area in the Hawaiian Islands and has been reported to have averaged between 2.8 and 3.5 million visitors a year between the 1980s and the 2010s, with visitors averaging between 3000-4000 a day and peaking around 10,000-13,000 per day. Concentrations of oxybenzone and other common UV filters were measured in subsurface water samples and in sands from the beach-shower areas in Hanauma Bay. Results demonstrate that beach showers also can be a source of sunscreen environmental contamination. Hydrodynamic modeling indicates that oxybenzone contamination within Hanauma Bay's waters could be retained between 14 and 50 h from a single release event period. Focusing on only oxybenzone, two different Hazard and Risk Assessment analyses were conducted to determine the danger of oxybenzone to Hanauma Bay's coral reef system. Results indicate that oxybenzone contamination poses a significant threat to the wildlife of Hanauma Bay. To recover Hanauma Bay's natural resources to a healthy condition and to satisfactorily conserve its coral reef and sea grass habitats, effective tourism management policies need to be implemented that mitigate the threat of sunscreen pollution.

First transcriptome of the copepod Gladioferens pectinatus subjected to chronic contaminant exposures

Contaminants are often at low concentrations in ecosystems and their effects on exposed organisms can occur over long periods of time and across multiple generations. Alterations to subcellular mechanistic pathways in response to exposure to contaminants can provide insights into mechanisms of toxicity that methods measuring higher levels of biological may miss. Analysis of the whole transcriptome can identify novel mechanisms of action leading to impacts in exposed biota. The aim of this study was to characterise how exposures to copper, benzophenone and diclofenac across multiple generations altered molecular expression pathways in the marine copepod Gladioferens pectinatus. Results of the study demonstrated differential gene expression was observed in cultures exposure to diclofenac (569), copper (449) and benzophenone (59). Pathways linked to stress, growth, cellular and metabolic processes were altered by exposure to all three contaminants with genes associated with oxidative stress and xenobiotic regulation also impacted. Protein kinase functioning, cytochrome P450, transcription, skeletal muscle contraction/relaxation, mitochondrial phosphate translocator, protein synthesis and mitochondrial methylation were all differentially expressed with all three chemicals. The results of the study also suggested that using dimethyl sulfoxide as a dispersant influenced the transcriptome and future research may want to investigate it's use in molecular studies. Data generated in this study provides a first look at transcriptomic response of G. pectinatus exposed to contaminants across multiple generations, future research is needed to validate the identified biomarkers and link these results to apical responses such as population growth to demonstrate the predictive capacity of molecular tools.

Acute toxicity of polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (PCDEs) in three model aquatic organisms (Scenedesmus obliquus, Daphnia magna, and Danio rerio) of different trophic levels

The frequent detection of polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (PCDEs) in aquatic systems has aroused widespread concerns, however, their potential hazard to aquatic ecosystems has been poorly understood. Here the acute toxicity of 12 PCDE congeners was evaluated in three model aquatic organisms representing different trophic levels following OECD test guidelines, including green algae (Scenedesmus obliquus), water flea (Daphnia magna), and zebrafish (Danio rerio). Dose-dependent increases in growth inhibition and mortality were observed for all tested PCDE congeners. Most of the PCDE congeners, in particular 3,3',4,4'-tetra-CDE, were highly toxic to the three aquatic organisms with EC₅₀ or LC₅₀ values below 1 mg L^-1. Their toxicities were generally comparable with those of certain polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Moreover, D. magna was the most sensitive species among the three aquatic organisms. In addition, the EC₅₀ or LC₅₀ values had an extremely significant correlation with the n-octanol-water partition coefficient (logK_ow) of the PCDE congeners. The established quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) models indicated that the molecular polarizability (α) could significantly influence the acute toxicity of PCDEs on Daphnia magna and Danio rerio, and the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (E_LUMO) is the key factor of the acute toxicity of PCDEs in Scenedesmus obliquus. In addition, even at environmental levels, 3,3',4,4'-tetra-CDE could induced seveve oxidative damages in the three aquactic species. These findings would contribute to the understanding of adverse effects of PCDEs in aquatic organisms.

Ultrasound-assisted electrochemical treatment of cosmetic industry wastewater: Mechanistic and detoxification analysis

This study aims to investigate the mineralization of cosmetics producing industrial wastewater (CW) using sono-electrochemical (US-EC) treatments. The influence of operating parameters such as current density (j), electrolyte (Na₂SO₄) concentration (m), initial pH (pH_o), and ultrasonic power was investigated using Ti/RuO₂ dimensionally stable electrodes. The results demonstrated 80.9% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency, 433.5 kWh (kg COD removed)^-1 of specific energy consumption at the optimum conditions of P = 100 W, j = 213 A m^-2, pH_o= 7.6 (natural pH), and m = 1.5 g L^-1. With the application of ultrasound, COD removal efficiency increases from 60.2% to 80.9%, with a synergistic effect of 1.1. Kinetics study analysis confirms that mineralization follows the n^th order kinetics model. In the presence of ultrasound, the performance of electrochemical treatment gets enhanced due to higher electron transfer, the enhanced production of ^•OH radicals, and sulfate radicals (SO₄^•-). The pathway for the degradation of the compound was suggested by quadrupole time of flight mass spectroscopy (QToF-MS). The operating cost of the process was also evaluated to establish the applicability of the US-EC process at the industrial scale.

Influence of polystyrene microplastics on levofloxacin removal by microalgae from freshwater aquaculture wastewater

Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) has attracted widespread attention because of its ability to absorb, enrich, and degrade typical endocrine-disrupting antibiotics (such as levofloxacin) in aquaculture wastewater. However, microplastic pollution in wastewater, which is becoming an increasingly severe problem, will exert a toxic effect on aquatic organisms (such as C. vulgaris and other microalgae). Polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs), which are commonly found in freshwater aquaculture wastewater, are the most harmful. Therefore, clarifying the effects of PS-MPs on the ability of C. vulgaris to degrade typical endocrine-disrupting antibiotics in freshwater aquaculture wastewater and determining the mechanism of the effect are particularly important. The results of this study showed that under the stress of PS-MPs, the growth of C. vulgaris was significantly inhibited; the EPS-polysaccharide content per algal cell, EPS adsorption, intracellular enrichment and degradation of levofloxacin, total CYP450 content, and total CYP450 activity all decreased; and the relative expression of key genes related to the metabolic activity of algal cells, such as psbA, psaB, and rbcL, was generally downregulated. PS-MPs mainly affected the removal of a typical endocrine-disrupting antibiotic by C. vulgaris by altering adsorption, enrichment, and enzyme degradation. The results provide a reference for research on the impact of microplastic pollution on the treatment of freshwater aquaculture wastewater.

Unraveling the metabolic effects of benzophenone-3 on the endosymbiotic dinoflagellate Cladocopium goreaui

As a well-known pseudo-persistent environmental pollutant, oxybenzone (BP-3) and its related organic ultraviolet (UV) filters have been verified to directly contribute to the increasing mortality rate of coral reefs. Previous studies have revealed the potential role of symbiotic Symbiodiniaceae in protecting corals from the toxic effects of UV filters. However, the detailed protection mechanism(s) have not been explained. Here, the impacts of BP-3 on the symbiotic Symbiodiniaceae Cladocopium goreaui were explored. C. goreaui cells exhibited distinct cell growth at different BP-3 doses, with increasing growth at the lower concentration (2 mg L^-1) and rapid death at a higher concentration (20 mg L^-1). Furthermore, C. goreaui cells showed a significant BP-3 uptake at the lower BP-3 concentration. BP-3 absorbing cells exhibited elevated photosynthetic efficiency, and decreased cellular carbon and nitrogen contents. Besides, the derivatives of BP-3 and aromatic amino acid metabolism highly responded to BP-3 absorption and biodegradation. Our physiological and metabolic results reveal that the symbiotic Symbiodiniaceae could resist the toxicity of a range of BP-3 through promoting cell division, photosynthesis, and reprogramming amino acid metabolism. This study provides novel insights into the influences of organic UV filters to coral reef ecosystems, which urgently needs increasing attention and management.

Role of benzophenone-3 additive in chronic toxicity of polyethylene microplastic fragments to Daphnia magna

Plastic additives may accelerate adverse effects of microplastics (MPs). This study aimed to identify the role of benzophenone-3 (BP-3) additive (10.82 ± 1.20% w/w) in chronic toxicity of polyethylene MP fragments to Daphnia magna (D. magna). MP fragments with and without BP-3 (48.37 ± 6.26 and 44.39 ± 11.16 μm, respectively) were synthesized and 4 d-old D. magna were exposed for 17 d. Daphnids exposed to MP/BP-3 fragments (98%) showed higher survival than those exposed to MP fragments (62%), which can be explained by a significantly low (p < 0.0001) bioconcentration of MP/BP-3 fragments. BP-3 leachate induced significantly low (p < 0.05) phototactic behavior of D. magna, likely leading to the low bioconcentration of MP/BP-3 fragments. Unlike MP fragments, both MP/BP-3 fragments and BP-3 additive inhibited embryonic development and offspring growth in a similar manner. Additionally, only BP-3 additive significantly induced (p < 0.05) higher lipid peroxidation in D. magna. This study suggests the critical role of plastic additives in MPs chronic toxicity to aquatic organisms, which should be further identified for other environmentally relevant plastic additives.

Response of soil enzyme activity and soil bacterial community to PCB dissipation across different soils

Soils are a repository for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). A pot incubation experiment was performed with four soils (black soil, paddy soil, oasis soil, and fluvo-aquic soil) treated with Aroclor 1242 to achieve PCB concentrations of 5 mg kg^-1. The soil enzyme activities of protease, phosphatase, catalase, dehydrogenase, and laccase were determined by spectrophotometry. The soil bacterial communities were investigated using Illumina sequencing analysis. The results showed that the characteristics of the test soils varied among the soil types. The fluvo-aquic soil had the greatest PCB dissipation rate (86.41%), followed by the oasis (79.31%), paddy (56.09%), and black (50.65%) soils. The soil pH, cation exchange capacity, soil organic matter content, and particle diameter played significant roles in PCB dissipation from soils. The soil type had a greater influence than PCB contamination on the soil enzyme activities and bacterial communities (alpha diversity, community structure, and composition). Among the four soils, the bacterial communities of the fluvo-aquic soil were the most susceptible to PCB contamination. However, the bacterial communities of the black soil were not changed by PCB contamination.

Roles and applications of enzymes for resistant pollutants removal in wastewater treatment

Resistant pollutants like oil, grease, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and plastics in wastewater are difficult to be degraded by traditional activated sludge methods. These pollutants are prevalent, posing a great threat to aquatic environments and organisms since they are toxic, resistant to natural biodegradation, and create other serious problems. As a high-efficiency biocatalyst, enzymes are proposed for the treatment of these resistant pollutants. This review focused on the roles and applications of enzymes in wastewater treatment. It discusses the influence of enzyme types and their sources, enzymatic processes in resistant pollutants remediation, identification and ecotoxicity assay of enzymatic transformation products, and typically employed enzymatic wastewater treatment systems. Perspectives on the major challenges and feasible future research directions of enzyme-based wastewater treatment are also proposed.

Optimization method for quantification of sunscreen organic ultraviolet filters in coastal sands

Most organic ultraviolet filters are very lipophilic and some of them are difficult to quantify in the environment. This article describes an optimization method for the quantification of these compounds in sand samples with diverse compositions. The standard additions method was used. The search for a unique high-performance liquid chromatography method to analyze all these filters along with the search for optimal detection conditions are presented in detail. The best extraction solvent was methanol, and the best conditions for analysis and detection involved the use of a high-performance liquid chromatography system equipped with a biphenyl column (2.6 μm, 150 × 4.6 mm), and an Orbitrap MS detector. We also demonstrated that sample freeze-drying can induce significant loss of some of the ultraviolet filters.

Risks of organic UV filters: a review of environmental and human health concern studies

Organic UV filters are compounds that absorb UV irradiation by their highly conjugated structure. With the developing consciousness over the last century of the skin damage UV radiation can cause, the demand for organic UV filters has risen, for use not only in sunscreens, but also in other personal care products. The massive production and usage of these organic UV filters has resulted in extensive release into the aquatic environment, and thereby making an important group of emerging contaminants. Considering the widespread occurrence of organic UV filters in not only ambient water, but also sediment, soil and even indoor dust, their threats towards the health of living organisms have been a subject of active investigation. In this review article, we present an overall review of existing knowledge on the risks of organic UV filters from the aspects of both environmental and human health impacts. As for the environment, some organic UV filters are proven to bioaccumulate in various kinds of aquatic organisms, and further to have adverse effects on different kinds of animal models. Toxicological studies including in vivo and in vitro studies are important and effective means to ascertain the effects and mechanisms of organic UV filters on both the ecosystem and humans. Subsequent concerns arise that these compounds will affect human health in the long term. This review concludes by suggesting future lines of research based on the remaining knowledge gaps.

Microalgal biosorption of heavy metals: A comprehensive bibliometric review

Heavy metals in the effluents released from industrial establishments pose risks to the environment and society. Prevalent organisms such as microalgae in industrial wastes can thrive in this harmful environment. The connection of the metal-binding proteins of the microalgal cell wall to the metal ions of the heavy metals enables microalgae as an ideal medium for biosorption. The current literature lacks the review of various microalgae used as biosorption of heavy metals from industrial effluents. This work aims to comprehensively review the literature on the use of microalgae as a biosorption for heavy metals. The study summarizes the application of different microalgae for heavy metals removal by identifying the various factors affecting the biosorption performance. Approaches to quantifying the heavy metals concentration are outlined. The methods of microalgae to generate biocompounds to enable biosorption of heavy metals are itemized. The study also aims to identify the materials produced by microalgae to facilitate biosorption. The industrial sectors with the potential benefit from the adoption of microalgal biosorption of heavy metals are recognized. Moreover, the current challenges and future perspectives of microalgal biosorption are discussed.

Unravelling metabolism and microbial community of a phytobed co-planted with Typha angustifolia and Ipomoea aquatica for biodegradation of doxylamine from wastewater

Pharmaceutical contaminants in environment induce unexpected effects on ecological systems and human; thus, development of efficient technologies for their removal is immensely necessary. In this study, biodegradation and metabolic fate of a frequently found pharmaceutical contaminant, doxylamine by Typha angustifolia and Ipomoea aquatica was investigated. Microbial community of the plant rhizosphere has been identified to understand the important roles of the functional microbes. The plants reduced 48-80.5 % of doxylamine through hydrolysis/dehydroxylation and carbonylation/decarbonylation. A constructed phytobed co-planted with T. angustifolia and I. aquatica removed 77.3 %, 100 %, 83.67 %, and 61.13 % of chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and doxylamine respectively from real wastewater. High-throughput sequencing of soil and rhizosphere indicated that the phyla Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Planctomycetes, Actinobacteria, and Cyanobacteria dominated the microbial communities of the phytobed. Current study has demonstrated the applicability of the developed phytobeds for the treatment of doxylamine from municipal wastewater and provide a comprehensive understanding of its metabolism through plant and its rhizospheric microbial communities.

A Systematic Review on Occurrence and Ecotoxicity of Organic UV Filters in Aquatic Organisms

The growing production of cosmetic products such as organic UV filters (OUVFs) in recent years has raised concern regarding their safety to human and environmental health. The inability of wastewater treatment plants in removing these chemical entities and their high octanol-water partition coefficient values tend to result in the persistence of OUVFs in several environmental matrices, leading these to be categorized as "emerging environmental contaminants" because of their unknown risk. Besides aquatic ecosystem contamination, the application of sludge disposal equally threatens terrestrial biota. Besides, the available reviews focusing on levels of OUVFs in aqueous systems (freshwater and marine), instrumental analysis from various samples, and specific toxicity effects, compiled information on the ecotoxicity of OUVFs is currently lacking. Hence, the present manuscript systematically reviews the ecotoxicity of OUVFs in freshwater and marine organisms occupying lower to higher trophic levels, including the underlying mechanisms of action and current knowledge gaps. The available scientific evidence suggests that OUVFs are a prime candidate for environmental concern due to their potential toxic effects. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first document detailing the toxicological effects of OUVFs in aquatic organisms.

A burning issue: The effect of organic ultraviolet filter exposure on the behaviour and physiology of Daphnia magna

Ultraviolet (UV) filters are compounds utilized in many manufacturing processes and personal care products such as sunscreen to protect against UV-radiation. These highly lipophilic compounds are emerging contaminants of concern in aquatic environments due to their previously observed potential to bioaccumulate and exert toxic effects in marine ecosystems. Currently, research into the toxic effects of UV filter contamination of freshwater ecosystems is lacking, thus the present study sought to model the effects of acute and chronic developmental exposures to UV filters avobenzone, oxybenzone and octocrylene as well as a mixture of these substances in the freshwater invertebrate, Daphnia magna, at environmentally realistic concentrations. Median 48-hour effect and lethal concentrations were determined to be in the low mg/L range, with the exception of octocrylene causing 50% immobilization near environmental concentrations. 48-hour acute developmental exposures proved to behaviourally impair daphnid phototactic response; however, recovery was observed following a 19-day post-exposure period. Although no physiological disruptions were detected in acutely exposed daphnids, delayed mortality was observed up to seven days post-exposure at 200 μg/L of avobenzone and octocrylene. 21-day chronic exposure to 7.5 μg/L octocrylene yielded complete mortality within 7 days, while sublethal chronic exposure to avobenzone increased Daphnia reproductive output and decreased metabolic rate. 2 μg/L oxybenzone induced a 25% increase in metabolic rate of adult daphnids, and otherwise caused no toxic effects at this dose. These data indicate that UV filters can exert toxic effects in freshwater invertebrates, therefore further study is required. It is clear that the most well-studied UV filter, oxybenzone, may not be the most toxic to Daphnia, as both avobenzone and octocrylene induced behavioural and physiological disruption at environmentally realistic concentrations.

Natural components in sunscreens: Topical formulations with sun protection factor (SPF)

Artificial sunscreens are already gaining traction in order to protect the skin from sunburns, photoaging and photocarcinogenesis. However, the efficacy and safety of most artificial sunscreen constituents are hindered by their photostability, toxicity and damage to marine ecosystems. Natural selection and evolution have ensured that plants and animals have developed effective protective mechanisms against the deleterious side effects of oxidative stress and ultraviolet radiation (UV). Hence, natural antioxidants such as sun blockers are drawing considerable attention. The exact mechanism by which natural components act as sunscreen molecules has not been clearly established. However, conjugated π system is reported to play an important role in protecting the vital genetic material within the organism. Compared to artificial sunscreens, natural sunscreens with strong UV absorptive capacities are largely limited by low specific extinction value and by their inability to spread in large-scale sunscreen cosmetic applications. Previous studies have documented that natural components exert their photoprotective effects (such as improved skin elasticity and hydration, skin texture, and wrinkles) through their antioxidant effects, and through the regulation of UV-induced skin inflammation, barrier impairment and aging. This review focuses on natural antioxidant topical formulations with sun protection factor (SPF). Lignin, melanin, silymarin and other ingredients have been added to high sun protection nature sunscreens without any physical or chemical UV filters. This paper also provides a reference for adopting novel technical measures (extracting high content components, changing the type of solution, optimizing formulation, applying Nano technology, et al) to design and prepare nature sunscreen formulations equated with commercial sunscreen formulations. Another strategy is to add natural antioxidants from plants, animals, microorganisms and marine organisms as special enhancer or modifier ingredients to reinforce SPF values. Although the photoprotective effects of natural components have been established, their deleterious side effects have not been elucidated.

Insights into the effect of cerium oxide nanoparticle on microalgal degradation of sulfonamides

Nanoparticles have been commercially used worldwide; however, there is a lack of information of their environmental impacts and ecotoxicity. In this study, the effect of cerium oxide nanoparticle (CeO₂NP) on a green microalga Scenedesmus obliquus, and microalgal biodegradation of four sulfonamides (sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole, sulfadiazine, and sulfamethoxazole) was investigated. There is insignificant inhibition of microalgal growth induced by CeO₂NP; however, it substantially influenced the expression of genes involved in key cellular metabolic activities of S. obliquus. For example, genes involved in photosynthetic activity (psbA) and energy production (ATPF0C) were downregulated with exposure to CeO₂NP. The low concentrations of CeO₂NP improved microalgal degradation of sulfonamides. This may be because of the upregulated genes encoding hydrogenase and oxidoreductase. The exploration of this study has provided a new understanding of the environmental impacts of CeO₂NP on microalgae-based biotechnologies for treatment of wastewater containing emerging organic contaminants.
