Hg, Zn and Cu levels in the muscle and liver of tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) from the coast of Ishigaki Island, Japan: relationship between metal concentrations and body length

Heavy metals and trace minerals in commonly available shark species from North East Arabian Sea: A human health risk perspective

Shark is a seafood commodity that is a good source of minerals and accumulates heavy metals and trace elements through biomagnification, which can pose health risk if taken above the permissible limit. A study was conducted on commonly landed eleven shark species (Scoliodon laticaudus, Rhizopriodon oligolinx, Sphyrna lewini (CR), Carcharhinus macloti, Carcharinus limbatus, Carcharhinus amblyrhynchoides, Carcharhinus sorrah, Carcharinus falciformes(VU), Glaucostegus granulatus, Chiloscyllium arabicum, Loxodon macrorhinus) and analyzed for their heavy metal content, Hazard Index, Total Hazard Quotient, Metal Pollution Index, and also calculated the health risk associated with the consumption. Most of the heavy metals and trace minerals were found to be within the acceptable limit. The Targeted Hazard Quotient (THQ) and the Hazard Index (HI) of all the species except two were less than 1 (HI ≤ 1.0). The Metal Pollution Index (MPI) is showing either no impact or very low contamination. An overall study on hazard identification and health risk characterization in terms of heavy metals shows contamination of some heavy metals in sharks, but there is no potential human health risk associated with consumption.

Mercury bioaccumulation and its relationship with trophic biomarkers in a Mediterranean elasmobranch mesopredator

Human activity has led to increased concentrations of mercury (Hg) in the world's oceans. Mercury can bioaccumulate and biomagnify in animal tissues via trophic transfer, thus, becoming most pronounced in larger and older predators. Here, we measured Hg concentrations and their relationship with stable isotopes-based proxies of trophic level (δ13C and δ15N values) in multiple tissues of Mustelus spp. from the Mediterranean Sea. We found higher Hg concentrations in muscle than in liver and fin tissues. The relationship between Hg concentrations and δ15N values in muscle suggested repeated foraging for low trophic level and Hg-poor prey, and biomagnification of Hg at higher trophic levels. Seasonal variations in δ13C values could indicate shifts in primary production sources and/or in local prey availability. The HBVSe index suggested no risk to human health, however the safe meal limit recommendations are 4.5 and 2.2 portions per month for adults and children, respectively.

Heavy metal and trace element concentrations in the blood of scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) from La Paz Bay, México

Sharks are particularly susceptible to bioaccumulation due to their life history characteristics and trophic position within marine ecosystems. Despite this, studies of bioaccumulation cover only a small proportion of extant species. In this study we report concentrations of trace elements and heavy metals in blood samples of Sphyrna lewini for the first time. We report high concentrations of several trace elements and heavy metals, with concentrations of some elements exceeding the limit determined safe for human consumption. High elemental concentrations may reflect biochemical differences between blood plasma and other tissues; however, they may also be symptomatic of high levels of exposure triggered by anthropogenic activities. We also provide evidence of elemental accumulation through ontogeny, the nature of which differs from that previously reported. Ultimately, this baseline study increases our understanding of interspecific and intraspecific variation in bioaccumulation and ecotoxicology in elasmobranchs which may prove important in ensuring adequate management.

Molecular fingerprint of gilthead seabream physiology in response to pollutant mixtures in the wild

The increase in trace element concentrations in the aquatic environment due to anthropogenic activities, urges the need for their monitoring and potential toxicity, persistence, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification at different trophic levels. Gilthead seabream is a species of commercial importance in the Mediterranean Sea, both for the aquaculture and fisheries sectors, however very little is known about their trace element contamination accumulation and the resulting effect on their health status. In the present study, 135 juveniles were collected from seven coastal lagoons known to be essential nursery areas for this species. We measured seventeen different inorganic contaminants at the individual level in fish muscle (namely Al, As, Be, Bi, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Li, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sr, Ti, Tl and Zn). Our results revealed the accumulation of multiple trace elements in individuals and distinct contamination signatures between lagoons which might lead to contrasted quality as nurseries for juveniles of numerous ecologically and economically relevant fish species in addition to seabreams. We further evaluated the potential adverse effect of these complex contamination mixtures on the liver (the main organ implicated in the metabolism of xenobiotics) and red muscle (a highly metabolic organ) using a proteomic approach. Alterations in cellular organization pathways and protein transport were detected in both tissues (albeit they were not similarly regulated). Chromosome organization and telomere maintenance in the liver appeared to be affected by contaminant mixture which could increase mortality, age-related disease risk and shorter lifetime expectancy for these juveniles. Red muscle proteome also demonstrated an upregulation of pathways involved in metabolism in response to contamination which raises the issue of potential energy allocation trade-offs between the organisms' main functions such as reproduction and growth. This study provides new insights into the cellular and molecular responses of seabreams to environmental pollution and proposed biomarkers of health effects of trace elements that could serve as a starting point for larger-scale biomonitoring programs.

Assessment of potential risks to human health associated with trace elements in three commercially important shark species captured in the Central Mexican Pacific

Shark meat is a popular protein source worldwide. However, existing national control policies for ensuring the safety and quality of shark meat are minimal. There are concerns about the sustainability of shark populations, which bioaccumulate and biomagnify potentially toxic elements at higher rates than non-predatory fish, posing a risk to human health. In this study, the contributions of essential elements to the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) and potentially toxic elements to the Reference Dose (RfD) linked to shark consumption (200 g per week) were investigated for three shark species in the Central Mexican Pacific. We estimated risks and benefits for women, children, and men. Our results suggest that the three shark species are sources of Se, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, and Zn, but poor sources of Mn for women and men aged 19-50 years. A weekly ingestion of 200 g of shark meat exceeded the RfD-As by 4-14 times and the RfD-Pb by 1.1-1.7 times for adults, indicating a potential risk to human health. The three shark species were also significant sources of potentially toxic elements for children, including Hg, Cd, Cr, and Pb. An excessive intake of Se was observed, with levels at 8.4-10.6 and 4.3-5.3 times the RDA for children aged 1-8 and 9-13 years, respectively. Although shark meat can be a good source of essential nutrients, the lack of controls in the commercialization process indicates that it should be consumed in moderation due to the potential risks associated with excessive exposure to potentially toxic elements. This caution is particularly important for children and pregnant women, who are at higher risk of health complications from consuming contaminated food.

Tissue metal concentrations and antioxidant enzyme activity in western north Atlantic white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias)

Anthropogenic practices have increased metal contamination in marine ecosystems. Most sharks have long lifespans, occupy an important ecological position at the top of marine food webs, and can accumulate metals. However, reference levels of metal contaminants in the tissues of sharks, particularly, apex predators such as the white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), are lacking. In this study, concentrations of copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), silver (Ag), and zinc (Zn) were measured in the muscle tissue of white (n = 42) and tiger (Galeocerdo cuvier; n = 3) sharks. Metal exposure in various species, including sharks, has been correlated with increased oxidative stress. Therefore, the main objectives of this study were to assess metal accumulation and antioxidant enzyme activity (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx)) in the muscle tissue of the population of white sharks and tiger sharks inhabiting the Western North Atlantic. The measured parameters were qualitatively compared between species. The small sample size of tiger sharks (collected from only one site) limited statistical analyses, therefore, white sharks were the primary focus of this study. Differences in tissue metal (Cu, Cd, Ni, and Zn) concentrations and antioxidant enzyme activities were detected based on collection site, with significant positive correlations between Cd and enzymes, SOD and CAT, and Zn and enzymes, SOD and GPx in C. carcharias. Differences in Ni concentration were detected based on sex, with females having higher Ni levels. Additionally, plasma osmolality was not correlated with tissue metal concentrations; however, osmolality decreased with increasing length in C. carcharias. This study is the first to report baseline levels of Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni, Ag, and Pb in muscle of North Atlantic white sharks and provides new insights into oxidative stress responses of these sensitive species to metal contaminants.

Progress in quality control, detection techniques, speciation and risk assessment of heavy metals in marine traditional Chinese medicine

Marine traditional Chinese medicines (MTCMs) hold a significant place in the rich cultural heritage in China. It plays an irreplaceable role in addressing human diseases and serves as a crucial pillar for the development of China's marine economy. However, the rapid pace of industrialization has raised concerns about the safety of MTCM, particularly in relation to heavy metal pollution. Heavy metal pollution poses a significant threat to the development of MTCM and human health, necessitating the need for detection analysis and risk assessment of heavy metals in MTCM. In this paper, the current research status, pollution situation, detection and analysis technology, removal technology and risk assessment of heavy metals in MTCM are discussed, and the establishment of a pollution detection database and a comprehensive quality and safety supervision system for MTCM is proposed. These measures aim to enhance understanding of heavy metals and harmful elements in MTCM. It is expected to provide a valuable reference for the control of heavy metals and harmful elements in MTCM, as well as the sustainable development and application of MTCM.

Total mercury concentrations in sharks, skates and rays along the South African coast

Global declines in elasmobranch populations resulting from several stressors raises conservation concern. Additionally, apex predators bioaccumulate high concentrations of total mercury (THg), due to biomagnification. Although South Africa is considered one of the top ten contributors of Hg emissions globally, information on Hg concentrations in elasmobranchs is limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the THg concentrations in 22 species of elasmobranchs along the South African coastline. Concentrations ranged between 0.22 and 5.8 mg/kg in Haploblepharus pictus (dark shysharks) and Rostroraja alba (white skates) on the south coast, respectively. Along the east coast it ranged between 0.21 and 17.8 mg/kg in Mobula kuhlii (shortfin devil rays) and Sphyrna lewini (scalloped hammerheads), respectively. Mercury concentrations on the east coast were in the same range or higher compared to the same species sampled between 2005-10 from the same region, with generally higher concentrations compared to the same species sampled globally.

Distribution of Hg and Se in Muscle and Liver of the Thornback Guitarfish Platyrhinoidis triseriata from the Eastern Pacific Ocean

Human consumption of the thornback guitarfish (Platyrhinoidis triseriata) is concentrated in coastal populations of the Pacific coast of Mexico as its meat is prized for its high quality. This study analyzes the distribution of mercury and selenium in the muscle and liver of Platyrhinoidis triseriata and the risk to human health associated with its consumption. In order to conduct these estimates, specimens were collected from the Eastern Pacific Ocean in 2015 and 2016 and found mean concentrations (µg g^-1 wet weight) of mercury ranging from 0.02 to 0.58 in muscle and 0.10 to 0.31 in liver. Selenium ranged from 0.14 to 1.31 in muscle and from 0.93 to 4.52 in liver. Mercury levels in the muscle of P. triseriata were significantly correlated (positive correlation) with the total length of the specimens. The predominant prey of P. triseriata was the shrimp Pleuroncodes planipes and according to the biomagnification factor, only mercury was biomagnified. The risk to consumers associated with the simultaneous presence of mercury and selenium in the muscle and liver of rays under the selenium health benefit value approach indicated that consumption of P. triseriata from this area is beneficial to human health.

Assessing multigenerational exposure to metals in elasmobranchs: Maternal transfer of contaminants in a yolk-sac viviparous species

This study aimed to assess the maternal offloading of metals in the Brazilian guitarfishPseudobatos horkelii through determining essential (Cr, Cu, Fe) and non-essential (Cd, Hg, Pb) metal concentrations along two generations of this species: pregnant females and offspring. The maximum transfer capacity (ECER) and offspring/mother ratio were calculated to estimate the extent of offloading, as well as the proportion of contaminants presented in offspring related to the maternal concentrations. Transfer efficiency was element-dependent. Chromium had the highest ECER (99.7%), followed by Hg (67.7%). Other essential metals were less transferred (9.6-35.6%) and Cd and Pb were not detected in uterine content samples. The relationships between maternal length and concentration, as well as transfer capacity were not significant, indicating that females might be continuously exposed, and that offloading might not excrete metals efficiently. On the other hand, embryos are exposed to these elements which could impair embryonic development.

Trace element concentrations in caudal scutes from Crocodylus moreletii and Crocodylus acutus in Belize in relation to biological variables and land use

Crocodylus moreletii (Morelet's crocodile) and Crocodylus acutus (American crocodile) are generalist, apex predators of subtropical aquatic habitats in Central America. As top predators, crocodiles may be exposed to high levels of micro pollutants, such as trace elements via bioaccumulation that enter the food web as a consequence of human activities. As such, the status of their population can be considered indicative of that of the entire ecosystem - i.e., crocodiles constitute as genuine indicator species. In this study, we report on the concentrations of trace elements found in the caudal scutes of 178 specimens of C. acutus and C. moreletii from Belize. Our objectives were three-fold: (1) to assess variation in trace element concentration between species, sexes, age classes and body index; (2) to identify areas with elevated exposure to trace elements by comparing concentrations in the scutes of crocodiles at various sites in Belize; and (3) to explore links between crocodile trace element load and local land use. All elements tested (Hg, Pb, Cd, As, Cu, Zn, Co) could be detected in at least some scutes. Many of the readings of As and Co were under or close to the detection limit and were not further analyzed. Relatively high Hg concentrations were observed in adults from Chiquibul Forest (median 3.170 µg/g) and Ambergris Caye (0.834 µg/g). Concentrations of Hg and Pb tended to be higher in adult animals than in juveniles, especially in C. acutus. On the other hand, concentrations of Cd, Cu and Zn were higher in juveniles than in subadult adult animals. Concentrations of Cu were higher in C. acutus than in C. moreletii, but otherwise no species-effects were found for the other trace elements. We found a negative correlation between Hg and Zn concentrations; correlations among Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn concentrations tended to be positive. In both juveniles and adults, animals with high concentrations of Zn had lower body-indices (a proxy for physiological condition). None of the other element concentrations correlated with the body-index. Specimens of C. acutus were more often sampled at coastal sites, while C. moreletii sampling points were typically closer to agricultural or forested areas. A canonical correlation analysis revealed a significant association between trace element load and habitat characteristics. Animals sampled inland, near submontane forests, contained higher levels of Hg, while animals sampled near agricultural, urban or lowland habitats tended to have higher concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn. This study identifies the most prevalent trace element concentrations impacting Belizean watersheds while highlighting the exposure risk to non-essential trace elements in less-urbanised areas or protected areas.

Pollutant Pb burden in Mediterranean Centroscymnus coelolepis deep-sea sharks

We report lead (Pb) analyses in juvenile (n = 37; mean length = 24.7 ± 2.3 cm) and adult (n = 16; mean length = 52.3 ± 9.3 cm) Centroscymnus coelolepis Mediterranean deep-sea sharks that are compared to Pb content in bathy-demersal, pelagic and shallow coastal sharks. Median Pb concentrations of C. coelolepis muscle (0.009-0.056 wet ppm) and liver (0.023-0.061 wet ppm) are among the lowest encountered in shark records. Stable Pb isotope imprints in adult C. coelolepis muscles highlight that most of Pb in C. coelolepis is from human origin. Lead isotopes reveal the persistence of gasoline Pb emitted in the 1970s in low-turnover adult shark's muscle while associated liver imprints are in equilibrium with recent pollutant Pb signatures suggesting an efficient pollutant Pb turnover metabolism. The comparison of Pb distribution between adult and juvenile cohorts suggests the role of dietary exposure and possible maternal offloading of Pb during gestation, likely associated to vitellogenesis in this aplacental viviparous deep-sea shark.

Mercury and selenium levels in archive samples of wild Atlantic bluefin tuna from the Mediterranean Sea

This study examined total mercury (THg) and selenium (Se) levels in archive samples (white and red muscles, liver, gills) of the wild Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT) (Thunnus thynnus) (n = 18) captured in the central Adriatic Sea. The influence of fish size, age, and tissue type on element distribution was examined. There were significant differences in THg and Se levels, and Se:THg molar ratios among tissues. THg levels were highest in liver and lowest in gills (liver > red muscle > white muscle > gills), while Se levels were also highest in liver but lowest in white muscle (liver > red muscle > gills > white muscle). Se:THg molar ratios were highest in gills (22-82), intermediate in liver (11-29) and red muscle (7-36), and lowest in white muscle (1.7-7.6). Concentrations of THg in all tissues and Se in liver and caudal muscle were positively correlated with tuna age and size, while the Se:THg molar ratio in gills and all white muscles was negatively correlated with tuna age and size, indicating that the protective role of Se against THg is reduced in older specimens. The selenium health benefit values (HBV_Se) were above zero in all tissues, indicating a small excess of Se after Hg sequestration. However, since the obtained HBV_Se for edible tissues were near zero (0.01-0.04), and more than 70% of white muscle samples and all red muscle samples exceeded the EU regulatory limit for THg in fish muscle, it would be advisable to limit their intake in adults to one meal per month.

Nurse sharks, space rockets and cargo ships: Metals and oxidative stress in a benthic, resident and large-sized mesopredator, Ginglymostoma cirratum

It is widely recognized that apex predators, such as large sharks with highly migratory behavior, are particularly vulnerable to pollution, mainly due to biomagnification processes. However, in highly impacted areas, mesopredator sharks with resident behavior can be as vulnerable as apex sharks. In this context, this study evaluated cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and rubidium (Rb) concentrations, as well as the potentially protective effects of selenium (Se) and the behavior of two non-enzymatic biomarkers, metallothionein (MT) and reduced glutathione (GSH), employing the Atlantic nurse shark Ginglymostoma cirratum as a study model and compared the results with other resident benthic sharks, as well as highly mobile apex sharks. Muscle tissue samples from 28 nurse sharks opportunistically sampled from the Brazilian Amazon Coast were analyzed. Lower metal concentrations were observed for Pb, Rb and Se in the rainy season, while statistically significant correlations between metals were observed only between Hg and Cd and Pb and Se. Molar ratio calculations indicate potential protective Se effects against Pb, but not against Cd and Hg. No associations between MT and the determined metals were observed, indicating a lack of detoxification processes via the MT detoxification route. The same was noted for GSH, indicating no induction of this primary cellular antioxidant defense. Our results indicate that benthic/mesopredator sharks with resident behavior are, in fact, as impacted as highly mobile apex predators, with the traditional detoxification pathways seemingly inefficient for the investigated species. Moreover, considering the studied population and other literature data, pollution should be listed as a threat to the species in future risk assessments.

Bioaccumulation and biomagnification in elasmobranchs: A concurrent assessment of trophic transfer of trace elements in 12 species from the Indian Ocean

We provided the first multi-species study investigating the presence and organotropism of trace elements in three tissues of 12 elasmobranch species. Shark species showed comparable TE loads, although milk sharks and juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks exhibited the highest Cd and Hg levels, respectively. Fins accumulated higher levels of Pb, Co, and Cr; muscles higher V, As, and Hg; livers higher Se and Cd levels. The organotropism of TEs calls for cautious when choosing a tissue to be sampled since certain tissues, like fin clips, do not provide reliable surrogate for the internal loads of some TEs. Strong correlations between essential and toxic TEs indicated detoxification mechanisms, while the TMF provided evidence for Hg, As and Se biomagnification along the food-web. Considering the difficulties in assessing elasmobranchs contamination from different areas, the proposed multi-species approach represents a valuable way to estimate the species-specific accumulation and transfer of pollutants in sharks.

Negative metal bioaccumulation impacts on systemic shark health and homeostatic balance

Contamination by metals is among the most pervasive anthropogenic threats to the environment. Despite the ecological importance of marine apex predators, the potential negative impacts of metal bioaccumulation and biomagnification on the health of higher trophic level species remains unclear. To date, most toxicology studies in sharks have focused on measuring metal concentrations in muscle tissues associating human consumption and food safety, without further investigating potential impacts on shark health. To help address this knowledge gap, the present study evaluated metal concentrations in the gills, muscle, liver and rectal gland of coastal sharks opportunistically sampled from Brazilian waters and tested for potential relationships between metal bioaccumulation and general shark health and homeostatic balance metrics. Results revealed high metal concentrations in all four tissue types, with levels varying in relation to size, sex, and life-stage. Metal concentrations were also associated with serum biomarkers (urea, lactate, ALT, triglycerides, alkaline phosphatase, and phosphorus) and body condition, suggesting potential negative impacts on organismal health.

Variation of essential and non-essential trace elements in whale shark epidermis associated to two different feeding areas of the Gulf of California

The Gulf of California represents an important hotspot for whale shark (Rhincodon typus) aggregation. Anthropogenic activities and natural sources could expose sharks to high levels of trace elements (TEs). To determinate these levels in this endangered species, concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn (in ng/g ww) were measured in 130 whale shark skin biopsies and 44 zooplankton samples collected from two areas of the Gulf of California, Bahía de Los Angeles (BLA) and Bahía de La Paz (LAP) during 2016-2018. For biopsies, Zn exhibited highest concentrations in BLA (2016-2017, 298 ± 406; 2017-2018, 1959 ± 2545) and at LAP (in 2016-2017, 595 ± 554; in 2017-2018, 2642 ± 1261). On the other hand, Cd (BLA 2016-2017, 3 ± 3; LAP 2016-2017, 4 ± 3; BLA 2017-2018, 17 ± 14; LAP 2017-2018, 13 ± 10) and Pb (BLA 2016-2017, 7 ± 7; LAP 2016-2017, 15 ± 32; BLA 2017-2018, 69 ± 76; LAP 2017-2018, 7 ± 5) showed lowest concentrations. Significant differences in TE concentrations between sites and periods occurred. Arsenic found in shark biopsies from La Paz suggested enrichment and/or increased bioavailability in this area. Sex alone was not a significant factor in TE concentration; nevertheless, a sex-dependent difference in correlation of TE concentration and size was noted (negative in males, positive in females). This indicates feeding strategies of whale shark may be sex and size segregated. During 2017-2018, zooplankton and sharks showed enrichment in all TEs. Essential elements were not biomagnified by sharks. Lead was biomagnified through zooplankton. Strong positive correlation between selected elements indicates that Zn, Cd and Pb follow the same metabolic route in the sharks' body.

Poaching of endangered species in Mediterranean Sea: Alopias vulpinus

A thresher shark poached by fishermen in the stretch of sea between the island of Ponza and the coast of Terracina (Lazio, Central Italy, Mediterranean Sea) and confiscated by the Italian health authorities was evaluated for the presence of chemical contaminants. Hg mean concentration of 2.1 mg kg^-1 was found in muscle; speciation analysis confirmed it was almost in the toxic organic form of MeHg (2.0 mg kg^-1). The Se:Hg molar ratio was <1 not protective against the toxic effect of Hg. ¹³⁷Cs was detected at a mean concentration of 0.53 Bq kg^-1, and ⁴⁰K, radioisotope of natural origin was found at 91 Bq kg^-1. Dioxins and PCBs were found in the common thresher shark at mean concentrations of 0.012 and 0.088 pg TEQ-WHO g^-1 w.w. while NDL PCBs at 4.5 ng g^-1 w.w., lower than limits set by European Regulation. The major concern is constituted by the presence of Hg twice the maximum limit set by EU Regulation, then the consumption of thresher shark flesh should be strongly discouraged.

Distribution of mercury species in different tissues and trophic levels of commonly consumed fish species from the south Bay of Biscay (France)

Mercury (Hg) is a contaminant of global concern in marine ecosystems, notably due to its ability to accumulate and concentrate in food webs. Concentrations of total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) and inorganic mercury (IHg) were assessed and compared in different tissues (liver, muscle, and gonads) of three common fish species (hake Merluccius merluccius, red mullet Mullus surmuletus, and sole Solea solea) from the continental shelf from the southern part of the Bay of Biscay. Several studies investigated Hg concentration in fish muscle, but few assessed concentrations in other organs, despite the importance of such data to understand contaminant organotropism and metabolization. Results showed that trophic position and feeding habitat are required to understand the variability of Hg concentration in muscle between fish species. In addition, high MeHg/THg ratio in muscle could be explained by the predatory behavior of the studied fish species and the biomagnification of this Hg species within the food web, MeHg. Despite differences between species, Hg concentration was always higher in muscle (from 118 ± 64 to 338 ± 101 ng g^-1 w.w.) and liver (from 122 ± 108 to 271 ± 95 ng g^-1 w.w.). These results can be related to physiological processes especially the MeHg detoxification strategies.

Heavy Metal Concentrations in Trachurus Mediterraneus and Merlangius Merlangus Captured from Marmara Sea, Turkey and Associated Health Risks

Rapid industrialization and excessive human population growth may cause deterioration in marine water quality and biodiversity. Heavy metals are one of the most common pollutants in the seas and marine organisms, including demersal and pelagic fish, can accumulate them from the environment. Assessment of the ecological risk of heavy metals from fish has an important role in public health. In this study, some heavy metal (Pb, Cd, As, Cr, Hg, Cu, Zn, and Fe) concentrations were determined in the muscle tissues of two commonly consumed fish species, Trachurus mediterraneus (Mediterranean horse mackerel) and Merlangius merlangus (Whiting), which are the fifth (14,222 tons/year) and sixth (6814 tons/year) highest commercial catches of marine fish species in Turkey, respectively. Heavy metal concentrations of samples collected from four sites (Adalar, İzmit Bay, Yalova, and Tekirdağ) in the Marmara Sea were determined using ICP-MS. Fish samples caught at Yalova station were found to have the highest heavy metal concentrations. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in terms of the mean values, only As, and Cr were higher than permissible limits in T. mediterraneus, while Pb, Cd, As, and Cr were higher in M. merlangus. Arsenic concentrations were higher than maximum limits in both T. mediterraneus and M. merlangus. The estimated weekly intake (EWI) was calculated to assess the potential health impact. The EWI for arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury for some sites was above the provisional tolerable weekly intake.

Metal contamination in threatened elasmobranchs from an impacted urban coast

Guitarfishes and angelsharks are two of the most endangered elasmobranch groups. Despite this, limited knowledge exists regarding the effects of environmental contamination in these groups. For this reason, this study assessed the concentrations of metals in liver and muscle of three guitarfishes (Pseudobatos horkelii, P. percellens, and Zapteryx brevirostris) and one angelshark species (Squatina guggenheim) captured during the year of 2019 in one of the most impacted areas in South America: the São Paulo State coast, Brazil, Southwest Atlantic. Cadmium (Cd) Chromium (Cr) Cupper (Cu) Iron (Fe), Mercury (Hg), and Lead (Pb) were determined by atomic spectrometry, with samples being previously acid digested. Among the non-essential metals, Cd had the highest mean concentrations for all species, followed by Pb and Hg, whereas Fe had the highest mean levels among the essential metals analyzed, followed by Cu and Cr. Liver and muscle samples had different concentrations, with liver presenting the highest concentrations. Except for Cd, non-essential metals had relatively low concentrations when compared to other elasmobranch species reported in the literature, which could be explained by the efficiency in metabolizing these compounds or differential life history patterns among the species studied herein and other. Considering that all species analyzed herein are typically consumed, human health impacts must be considered, especially concerning Cd concentrations. Furthermore, Cd, Cr and Pb were above the safety limits, indicating potential hazard for human consumption. In conclusion, our results suggest that these species are exposed to metals and that concentrations above the safety limits observed for these species must be taken into consideration regarding human consumption.

Profile and consumption risk assessment of trace elements in megamouth sharks (Megachasma pelagios) captured from the Pacific Ocean to the east of Taiwan

Focusing on 27 rare filter-feeding megamouth sharks (Megachasma pelagios) captured as a by-catch of drift gillnet fishery in the Pacific Ocean to the east of Taiwan, this study analyzes the concentrations of 24 elements in their muscle, discusses the bioaccumulation of each element and the correlation between different elements, and assesses the potential health risks of consuming megamouth shark muscle. Among the 24 elements, mean concentrations of Ga, Ag, Li, Bi, Hg, Co, and Cd were relatively low ranging from 10^-3 to 10^-1 mg/kg, those of Pb, Ba, Mn, Ni, As, Cr, B, Sr, Cu, and Zn ranged from 10^-1-10¹ mg/kg, and those of Fe, Ca, Al, K, Mg, Ti, and Na were relatively high ranging from 10¹ to 10³ mg/kg. The toxic element content index was most significantly correlated with the concentration of Cu. Hence, this study recommends that the concentration of Cu could be used as an indicator of metal accumulation in megamouth shark muscle. The log bioconcentration factor (BCF) ranged from less than 0 to 7.85 in shark muscle. For elements with a concentration of less than 100 μg/L in seawater, the log BCF was inversely proportional to their concentration in seawater. According to the correlation analysis, the accumulation of elements in muscle of megamouth sharks is primarily affected by the concentrations of dissolved elements in seawater, except that the accumulation of Hg, As, Cu, Ti, Al, and Fe appears to be mainly affected by feeding behaviors. The assessment of the health risk of consuming megamouth shark muscle showed that its total hazard index was greater than 1. This suggests that the long-term or high-frequency consumption of megamouth shark muscle may cause health hazards due to the accumulation of trace elements, particularly those with a large contribution of health risk, including As, Hg, and Cu.

The current knowledge gap on metallothionein mediated metal-detoxification in Elasmobranchs

Elasmobranchs are particularly vulnerable to environmental contamination, especially pollutants that may bioaccumulate and biomagnify, throughout the trophic web, such as metals. However, Elasmobranch management and conservation plans are challenging, and this group is often neglected regarding ecotoxicological analyses, particularly concerning metal detoxification mechanisms. This article discusses metallothionein (MT) mediated metal detoxification in Elasmobranchs and reflects on the current knowledge gap in this regard.

Mercury concentrations in the tissues of blue shark (Prionace glauca) from Sagami Bay and cephalopods from East China Sea

The toxicity of mercury (Hg), is generally known, and around 90% of Hg exist as methylmercury (CH₃Hg⁺) in marine organism. Mercury concentrates in sharks and whales, which are at the top of the food chain as predators to cephalopods. The concentrations of Hg in liver and muscle of blue shark, caught in Sagami Bay, and in digestive gland and mantles of Todarodes pacificus, Sepia madokai, and Uroteuthis edulis caught in East China Sea were measured and analyzed. The Hg concentrations in the sharks, squids, and cuttlefishes determined in this study were almost same as those in the other sea regions. In addition, the Hg concentration in the blue shark was higher in the muscle than in the liver. In S. madokai and U. edulis, Hg accumulated in the digestive gland but not in the mantle. Although the Hg concentration in the digestive gland of T. pacificus is lower than those of S. madkai and U edulis, Hg concentration in the mantle is critically higher. More than 90% of Hg is present as CH₃Hg⁺ in muscle of blue shark and mantle of T. pacificus. This feature is explained due to amino acids with the thiol groups and chain genes in the muscle of blue shark as well as in the mantle of T. pacificus. Myosin in the mantle of T. pacificus and blue shark enhances the stability of CH₃Hg⁺. The amount of Hg in the digestive gland of T. pacificus could be too large to store; thus, Hg is released to the mantle, whereas the nutrients in the digestive gland of T. pacificus are supplied to other tissues. It is considered that the muscle fiber of T. pacificus is strong; therefore, large amounts of myosin levels may be present in T. pacificus than in S. madokai and U. edulis.

Analysis of Trace Element Concentrations and Antioxidant Enzyme Activity in Muscle Tissue of the Atlantic Sharpnose Shark, Rhizoprionodon terraenovae

Metals occur naturally in the environment; however, anthropogenic practices have greatly increased metal concentrations in waterways, sediments, and biota. Metals pose health risks to marine organisms and have been associated with oxidative stress, which can lead to protein denaturation, DNA mutations, and cellular apoptosis. Sharks are important species ecologically, recreationally, and commercially. Because they occupy a high trophic level, assessing muscle tissue metal concentrations in sharks may reflect metal transfer in marine food webs. In this study, concentrations of cadmium, copper, lead, nickel, selenium, silver, and zinc were measured in the muscle of Rhizoprionodon terraenovae (Atlantic sharpnose shark) from 12 sites along the coast of the southeastern United States. Activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase) also were examined in the muscle tissue of R. terraenovae. A total of 165 samples were analyzed, and differences in trace element bioaccumulation and enzyme activity were observed across sites. R. terraenovae samples collected from South Florida and South Carolina had the highest cumulative trace element concentrations whereas those collected from North Carolina and Alabama had the lowest cumulative concentrations. Trace element concentrations in shark muscle tissue were significantly correlated to antioxidant enzyme activity, particularly with glutathione peroxidase, suggesting that this enzyme may serve as a non-lethal, biomarker of metal exposure in R. terraenovae. This is one of the most extensive studies providing reference levels of trace elements and oxidative stress enzymes in a single elasmobranch species within the U.S.

Hg and Se composition in demersal deep-sea fish from the North-East Atlantic

It has been emphasized that seafood consumers may have a higher risk of mercury (Hg) exposure. Nevertheless, the co-occurrence of selenium (Se) in organisms may affect the toxicity and bioavailability of Hg. In this work, we aim to demonstrate the possible role of Se as a potential protective element against Hg in muscle and liver tissues of three demersal deep-sea fish species: common mora Mora moro, birdbeak dogfish Deania calcea, and smooth lanternshark Etmopterus pusillus. Comparing species, the birdbeak dogfish D. calcea showed the highest Hg concentrations, the lowest Se levels, the lowest mean Se:Hg molar ratio, a negative HBV-Se index, and no correlation between total length. On the other hand, smooth lanternshark E. pusillus showed the lowest Hg concentrations, the highest Se concentrations, the highest mean Se:Hg molar ratio, a positive HBV-Se index, and a significant positive correlation between total length and Se concentrations in muscle. Comparing tissues, the common mora Mora moro seems to accumulate more Hg and Se in liver than shark species D. calcea and E. pusillus that showed to accumulate Hg and Se preferentially in muscle. Our results indicate that these three species for having Hg concentrations near and above the EU regulatory thresholds and for presenting low Se:Hg ratios, and negative (or low positive) HBV-Se index may pose a real risk of Hg toxicity for the consumer.

Mercury and arsenic in processed fins from nine of the most traded shark species in the Hong Kong and China dried seafood markets: The potential health risks of shark fin soup

Shark fin is one of Asia's most valued dried seafood products, with over 80 shark species traded in Hong Kong [HK]. We analyzed processed shark fins from mainland China and HK markets (n = 267) for mercury, methyl‑mercury, and arsenic, to inform consumers, policy makers and public health officials on the health risks of ingesting fins from nine of the most common shark species in the fin trade. Fins from all species frequently exceed Hg limits established by HK authorities. Most of the mercury found is in the form of methyl‑mercury (69.0 ± 33.5%). Five species surpass methyl‑mercury PTWIs and blue shark fins can exceed inorganic arsenic BMDL_0.5. Species-of-origin was a significant predictor of heavy metal concentrations, with higher mercury concentrations associated with coastal sharks and lower arsenic levels found with increasing shark trophic level. Species-specific labeling would help consumers avoid shark fin products that pose the highest health risk.

Bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of potentially toxic elements in the pelagic thresher shark Alopias pelagicus in Baja California Sur, Mexico

Pelagic thresher shark (Alopias pelagicus) is a circumglobal species with high ecological and economic importance. Concentrations of mercury, selenium and cadmium in the muscle and liver tissues of A. pelagicus captured from Baja California Sur, Mexico were determined for assessing the potential human hazard. Results revealed that the average concentrations of Hg (0.76 mg kg^-1) and Cd (0.18 mg kg^-1) in muscle tissues were below the maximum permissible limits for human consumption. Se in the muscles were relatively low (mean: 0.30 mg kg^-1 -1) resulting in a molar excess of Hg over Se. Average levels of hepatic Cd were extremely higher than the maximum limit for consumption. Organotropism of Hg was muscle > liver, whereas Se and Cd presented an order of liver > muscle. Biomagnification Factor (BMF) emphasized the trophic transfer of elements. Selenium Health Benefit value was negative (-3.76) posing potential health risks demanding regular monitoring for health risks.

Mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) content in the shark Mustelus henlei (Triakidae) in the northern Mexican Pacific

Mercury and selenium were assessed in Mustelus henlei, which is a carnivorous predatory shark that is important for the coastal communities of the northern Mexican Pacific (NMP). Sixty-two individuals were sampled; muscle and liver were isolated and analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The mean Hg concentrations (wet weight) obtained for muscle (0.08 ± 0.10 μg g^-1) and liver (0.09 ± 0.26 μg g^-1) were below the allowed limits (< 1.0 μg g^-1 Hg). The average Se concentration was 0.03 ± 0.01 μg g^-1 in muscle and 0.13 ± 0.05 μg g^-1 in liver. The Se/Hg molar ratio of muscle was 1.83; however, the selenium health benefit value (HBV_Se) was of 0.08. We calculated that an adult man (70 kg), an adult woman (60 kg), and a child (16 kg) could consume 1595, 838, and 223 g/week of M. henlei muscle, respectively, without risks to health. In conclusion, the concentrations and molar ratio of Hg and Se in M. henlei muscle mean that consumption of this shark's meat does not represent neither a benefit nor a public health risk.

Mercury concentration in shark meat from traditional markets of Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea

Background

Although unusually high levels of blood mercury have been reported in the North Gyeongsang Province (Gyeongsangbuk-do), mercury contents from shark meat distributed in this region have not been assessed yet. Thus, this study aims to identify the hazard by evaluating the mercury contents of the shark meat sold in the traditional market of Gyeongsangbuk-do.

Methods

The shark meat in the form of muscle meat was obtained from 15 traditional markets of Gyeongsangbuk-do in the summer and winter of 2013. Out of 105 samples in total, 49 were collected in the summer and 56 in the winter. The total mercury concentration was measured by the combustion-gold amalgamation method using an automatic mercury analyzer (Milestone DMA-80, Milestone).

Results

The average mercury concentration of shark meat was 2.29 ± 1.77 µg/g, ranging between 0.06–8.93 µg/g with a geometric mean of 1.44 µg/g, which is higher than those reported in many countries. The mercury concentration in 77 of 105 shark meat samples exceeded 1 µg/g. Mercury concentration ranged between 0.09–8.93 µg/g (geometric mean: 1.45) in the summer and 0.06–6.73 µg/g (geometric mean: 1.48) in the winter.

Conclusions

Shark meat sold in the market contained a substantial amount of mercury. This suggests that it is difficult to reduce mercury intake by simply strengthening the standard level of mercury concentration in shark meat. Therefore, it is need to communication and awareness programs with consumers about hazardous effects of mercury inherent in shark meat.

Bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of Cd in commercially sought brown smoothhound Mustelus henlei in the western coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico

A study on cadmium concentration in Mustelus henlei (liver and muscle) was carried out in an area influenced by natural phosphorite deposits and coastal upwelling. Our results indicate that liver (0.96 μg/g) concentrations were higher compared to the muscle (0.040 μg/g) suggesting it is on the safer level for human consumption. The male/female ratio indicates higher values (based on liver & muscle) in males (0.899 μg/g), which contributes to these differences in concentration. Higher values in the liver (0.96 μg/g) is due to the influence of phosphorite deposits in the region as well as the high metabolic activity. The other important factor responsible for these high Cd values are the prey, which also poses high values and is well supported by the biomagnification (1.08 & 4.57) of this element. The study also benefited in evaluating the environmental conditions for this particular species and elemental concentration in relation to human health.

Trace elements levels in muscle and liver of a rarely investigated large pelagic fish: The Mediterranean spearfish Tetrapturus belone (Rafinesque, 1810)

We determined levels of mercury, cadmium, lead and selenium in muscle and liver of 29 specimens of a large pelagic fish rarely investigated, the Mediterranean spearfish Tetrapturus belone (Raf., 1810). The following element concentration ranking (mean ± S.D.; espressed in mg/kg dry weight) was recorded in muscle: Hg (3.401 ± 1.908) > Se (1.727 ± 0.232) > Pb (0.532 ± 0.322) > Cd (0.019 ± 0.015), and Se (6.577 ± 1.789) > Cd (5.815 ± 3.038) > Hg (2.698 ± 2.214) > Pb (0.661 ± 1.334) in liver. Levels of Hg, Se and Cd were compared to those reported for other Istiophoridae from oceanic areas and for other large predators of Mediterranean Sea, like swordfish and tuna. Organotropism of trace elements and their relation to size was discussed. Ecophysiological considerations regarding the Se-Hg relationship as well as Se-Cd indicate a possible detoxification mechanism. The implications for human consumption are briefly discussed.

Trace element contamination in fish impacted by bauxite red mud disposal in the Cassidaigne canyon (NW French Mediterranean)

From 1966 to 2015, the Gardanne alumina refinery discharged some 20 million tons of bauxite residue (called red mud) into the Cassidaigne Canyon (northwest French Mediterranean) with impacts on local ecosystem functioning. Although these red muds contained high levels of trace elements (TE), in particular titanium (Ti), vanadium (V), aluminum (Al) and arsenic (As), surprisingly, their impacts on fish contamination levels and the risk related to fish consumption have been little studied until now. Here, 11 trace elements (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, Ti and V) were analyzed in muscle and, when possible, liver, from 1308 fish of 26 species from an impacted zone in the vicinity of the Cassidaigne Canyon and a reference zone, unaffected by red mud disposals. Moreover, 66 arsenic speciation analyses were performed. Although the impact of human activities on the levels of fish contamination by trace elements is generally not easy to assess in situ because it is blurred by interaction with biological effects, we highlighted significant contamination of the fish species collected from the Cassidaigne Canyon, especially by the main trace elements attributable to the discharges of the Gardanne alumina refinery, namely Al, V and Ti. Moreover, inorganic toxic As concentrations were higher in the impacted zone. The results of this baseline research also confirmed the concern previously raised regarding Hg in Mediterranean organisms and that trace element contamination levels in fish are generally negatively related to fish length for all TE except Hg.

Trace elements and POPs in two commercial shark species from Djibouti: Implications for human exposure

Within Djibouti (Gulf of Aden), the scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini) and milk shark (Rhizoprionodon acutus) are important components of the artisanal fishery and they are caught to be exported or sold for local consumption. However, little scientific information exists on the contamination load of these species in this area of the world. With global populations of elasmobranchs in decline, understanding the extent of contaminant exposure is critical to future conservation as well as to assess the health risks for consumers of these species. The contaminants analyzed in this study comprised PCB, DDT and trace elements in livers, muscles and fins of both hammerhead sharks and milk sharks. The overall organochlorine compounds (OCs) and trace elements concentrations were similar among the two sharks' species and the pattern of PCB and DDT tissue distribution showed the highest burdens in livers compared with muscles and fins. However, the different accumulation profiles of OCs among shark species suggest species-specific accumulation of these contaminants. The p,p'DDE/∑DDT ratios were equal or slightly higher than the critic value of 0.6, suggesting possible recent inputs of technical DDT in the area. Concentration of trace elements from this study were generally comparable to those found in sharks from other areas of the world and, highlight the wide variation in metal concentrations between species, individuals and tissues. As far as Hg is concerned, scalloped hammerhead sharks showed higher accumulation in muscles compared with milk sharks. Both species showed elevated concentration of Se, which might be related to high Hg levels since Se inhibits Hg toxicity. The potential cancer risk for PCB, Cd, Ni, Cr and As fell within the range of 10^-6-10^-4, suggesting some concerns for the overall contamination levels in both species. Indeed, consuming of fish involves a mixture of all analyzed elements, and therefore, some potential risk might arise from regularly consuming these species.

Blood plasma levels of heavy metals and trace elements in white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) and potential health consequences

Heavy metals may adversely affect health in marine organisms. As top predators, sharks may be especially vulnerable to exposure over long lifespans. Here we evaluate plasma levels of 14 heavy metals and 12 trace elements in white sharks, Carcharodon carcharias, in South Africa to determine whether they are related to sex, body size, and/or body condition and other health parameters. High levels of mercury and arsenic were found in shark blood at levels considered toxic in other vertebrates. Heavy metal concentrations were not related to body size or sex. Metal concentrations were not related to body condition with exception of copper, which was positively correlated. Protective effects of elements such as selenium, zinc, and iron were not detected. No negative effects on health parameters, such as total leukocytes or granulocyte to lymphocyte ratios were observed. Results suggest that sharks may have protective mechanisms that mitigate harmful effects of heavy metal exposure, providing new opportunities for future studies.

Heavy metal accumulation in and food safety of shark meat from Jeju island, Republic of Korea

Shark meat is consumed as a food source worldwide, especially in Asian countries. However, since sharks are apex predators in the ocean food chain, they are prone to bioaccumulation of heavy metals. More than 100 million sharks are caught annually for human consumption, and the safety of shark meat cannot be overemphasized. Here, we examined heavy metal concentration in the muscle tissue of 6 shark species including 3 migratory species (Carcharhinus brachyurus, Carcharhinus obscurus, and Isurus oxyrinchus) and 3 local species (Triakis scyllium, Mustelus manazo, and Cephaloscyllium umbratile) from fish markets in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. The concentrations of 11 heavy metals (Cr, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Cd, Sn, Sb, Pb, and Hg) and MeHg were analyzed. The result showed that the average concentrations of all metals, except for that of As, were below the regulatory maximum limits of many organizations, including the Codex standard. Hg and MeHg were significantly correlated with body length, body weight, and age, and the concentration of Hg was expected to exceed the limit in C. brachyurus with a body length or weight of over 130 cm or 25 kg, respectively. Our results indicate that shark meat can expose consumers to a high level of As and that copper sharks bigger than the predicted size should be avoided for excessive Hg. Considering these findings, a detailed guideline on consumption of meat of different shark species should be suggested based on further investigation.

Trace metal concentrations in the muscle of seven marine species: Comparison between the Gulf of Lions (North-West Mediterranean Sea) and the Bay of Biscay (North-East Atlantic Ocean)

Concentrations of 6 trace metals (Ag, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in the muscle of 2 sharks (Galeus melastomus and Scyliorhinus canicula), 4 teleosts (Helicolenus dactylopterus, Lepidorhombus boscii, Micromesistius poutassou and Phycis blennoides) and 1 crustacean (Nephrops norvegicus) were compared between the Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean) and the Gulf of Lions (Mediterranean Sea). Although average concentrations and the trace element pollution index were generally higher in the Gulf of Lions, significant differences between the two ecosystems were only found for Zn for Helicolenus dactylopterus, and for Ag and Cu for the crustacean N. norvegicus. Moreover, some relationships between trophic level or size and metal concentrations were found for these two species. The absence of clear pattern may result from the blurring effect of contamination and excretion that may act differentially for all species and all elements.

Bioaccumulation of As, Hg, and Se in tunas Thunnus albacares and Katsuwonus pelamis from the Eastern Pacific: tissue distribution and As speciation

With the aim of knowing the distribution of As, Hg, and Se in skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis, Linnaeus, 1758) and yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares, Bonnaterre, 1788) from the Eastern Pacific, elemental concentrations were determined in the muscle and liver; As species were also analyzed in the stomach content. Additionally, health risk for consumers was assessed. For both tunas, levels of As and Se were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the liver than in the muscle. In K. pelamis, Hg concentrations in the muscle were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than those in the liver. In T. albacares, As, Hg, and Se showed a trend to increase with fish dimensions. Arsenic extractability was better in the muscle than in the liver of both species; in K. pelamis, As species were better extracted than in T. albacares. In both tuna species, the most extractable arsenic was arsenobetaine (AsB) and a minor part was dimethylarsinic acid (DMA). The liver contained mainly AsB with some DMA and arsenocholine (AsC). Hazard indexes (HI) indicated no risk from Hg and Se intake through these tuna species. Considering the individual contribution to the HI, Hg contributed more (80 to 86%) than Se. In the context of health risk, none of the As and Hg values were above the permissible limits; however, two samples of T. albacares (9%) and three samples of K. pelamis (12%) had Se concentrations over the limits. If Hg and Se in the edible portion of tuna are considered under the approach of the HBV_Se, tuna consumption is beneficial.

Mercury, cadmium, and lead content in demersal sharks from the Macaronesian islands

The overexploitation of shark and ray fishing as well as anthropogenic pollution in the sea has led to a large decline in their population, and because sharks occupy a high trophic position in the ecosystem, they could have high concentrations of heavy metals such as Hg, Pb, and Cd. This study is based on seven species of demersal sharks which were caught in the Macaronesian archipelagos (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and the Azores Archipelago). Hg and Pb concentrations were found in the present study to be below those reported in other comparative studies, with the highest reported values of Hg and Pb being 281,738 μg/kg for Pb in Deania profundorum (Smith & Radcliffe, 1912) and 264,30 μg/kg for Hg in Centrophorus uyato, Rafinesque, 1810. As for Cd, the values found here are higher than those in the literature, the highest reported concentration being 120.36 μg/kg in Centrophorus squamosus (Bonnaterre, 1788).

Bioaccumulation of trace metals in banded Persian bamboo shark (Chiloscyllium arabicum) from the Persian Gulf: A food safety issue

Persian bamboo shark (Chiloscyllium arabicum) was collected from two sites of the Khozestan province, northern basin of Persian Gulf, with the aim to identify differences in metal concentrations between fishing areas as well as the risk for human health due to consumption of the selected species. We analyzed Zn, Cu, Pb, Hg, Cd and Ni in muscle and liver tissues of specimens from both areas of study using atomic adsorption spectrometry. Statistical elaborations revealed higher bioaccumulation of metals in livers than muscle as well as in the site of worthy of Musa as regards Zn, Pb and Ni than the site of worthy of Darvis, due to the more intensive anthropogenic input. The risk for consumers is low for the most of metals, with the exception of the THQ for Hg, which resulted next to the level of risk with high frequencies of consumption.

Mercury concentrations in three ray species from the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico: Variations by tissue type, sex and length

Total mercury concentrations ([THg]) were determined in muscle and liver of the bat ray (Myliobatis californica), shovelnose guitarfish (Pseudobatos productus) and banded guitarfish (Zapteryx exasperata). Generalized linear models (GLM) were used to determine the effects of size and sex in [THg] and showed that both are determinants of [THg] in these species. The [THg] in both tissues significantly increased with length especially in sexually mature organisms with a steeper slope for mature male than mature female. This may relate to elasmobranchs sexual dimorphism driven variation in growth rates. Median muscle [THg] was significantly greater than liver in each ray species but there were some individuals with higher liver [THg] than muscle. There were individuals with muscle [THg] higher than the advisory thresholds of 0.2 and 0.5mgkg^-1ww (2.4 and 11% of the bat ray; 2.1 and 10% of the shovelnose guitarfish; 12.6 and 45% of the banded guitarfish, respectively).

Growth-related changes in non-essential and essential metals in the liver of star-spotted smooth-hounds (dogfish) Mustelus manazo from the northern region of Japan

We analyzed Cd, Hg, Zn, Cu, Mn and Fe concentrations in liver samples from male and female star-spotted smooth-hounds at various life stages. Male sharks of this species are known to reach their maximum body length (BL) more quickly than females, while females are known to mature later and live longer than males. Hepatic Cd and Hg concentrations in males and females markedly increased after maturation, but these increases proceeded earlier in males than in females. Hepatic Zn and Cu concentrations decreased during the growth stage of males and females, and thereafter increased concomitantly with increases of Cd and Hg burdens, forming a U-shaped curve over their lifespan, and the BL at which the lowest concentrations of Zn and Cu were observed was smaller in males than in females. These gender-related differences in those metals could reflect the faster growth and earlier cessation of growth in males.

Influence of ontogeny and environmental exposure on mercury accumulation in muscle and liver of male Round Stingrays

Mercury tissue distribution and its dynamics are poorly understood in elasmobranchs. Total mercury was measured in liver and muscle of male Round Stingrays (Urobatis halleri) from Seal Beach, California, an anthropogenically impacted site, and from the offshore island of Santa Catalina, a less impacted site. Stable isotope analysis was also performed on the muscle and red blood cells (RBCs) of a subset of rays over a range of age classes to investigate mercury accumulation with respect to trophic ecology. Mercury in both tissues was found to be significantly greater in adults than juveniles in mainland rays; however, liver mercury accumulation drastically increased after maturity and was significantly greater in mainland adult rays than Catalina rays. There were no patterns in δ¹⁵N or δ¹³C with size in muscle; however, there were indications of seasonal changes in RBC δ¹⁵N, suggesting short term shifts in diet or behavior is likely linked to reproductive status as is mercury accumulation.

Mercury, arsenic, cadmium and lead in two commercial shark species (Sphyrna lewini and Caraharinus porosus) in Trinidad and Tobago

Sharks are long-lived apex predators which can accumulate toxic metals such as mercury and arsenic. Samples of Sphyrna lewini and Carcharinus porosus were collected from two commercial fish landing sites in Trinidad. Heavy metal concentrations were determined in the muscle, dorsal fin, vertebrae and liver using atomic absorption spectrometric. The provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) and target hazard quotient (THQ) were determined to assess the potential health risks to consumers. Mercury levels ranged between 74-1899μg/kg in S. lewini and 67-3268μg/kg in C. porosus. Arsenic levels ranged between 144-2309μg/kg in S. lewini and 762-6155μg/kg in C. porosus. Cadmium levels generally ranged between 0.27-27.29mg/kg in S. lewini and 0.6-29.89mg/kg in C. porosus. Lead levels generally ranged between 0.14 and 208.81mg/kg in S. lewini while C. porosus levels ranged between 0.30 and 459.94mg/kg. The PTWI and THQ values suggest that consumption of these shark species can therefore be a major source of exposure to lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury in humans and is likely to have potential health risk over long term exposure.

Mid-Atlantic elasmobranchs: Suitable metal scouts?

Heavy metals are a hazard to marine fauna and human health. In this study we assess stable isotopes and metal content in Prionace glauca and Isurus oxyrinchus and analyse these results within and among other species and across regions and geographical areas. Also, we evaluate their suitability, together with Raja clavata and Galeorhinus galeus, as Mid-Atlantic bioindicators. Prionace glauca and I. oxyrinchus shared the same trophic level in a pelagic food web and did not present significant differences between genders or metals, except for As. Arsenic and Hg accumulated while Cd and Pb were not detected. One I. oxyrinchus presented Hg values above regulatory limits. A high Hg exposure was associated with I. oxyrinchus since its maximum weekly intake was exceeded. Elasmobranchs can be used as metal sentinels, each presenting different key features which defines a good marine bioindicator, allowing long-term monitoring at different temporal and spatial scales.

Relationships of mercury concentrations across tissue types, muscle regions and fins for two shark species

Mercury (Hg) exposure poses a threat to both fish and human health. Sharks are known to bioaccumulate Hg, however, little is known regarding how Hg is distributed between different tissue groups (e.g. muscle regions, organs). Here we evaluated total mercury (THg) concentrations from eight muscle regions, four fins (first dorsal, left and right pectorals, caudal-from both the inner core and trailing margin of each fin), and five internal organs (liver, kidney, spleen, heart, epigonal organ) from two different shark species, bonnethead (Sphyrna tiburo) and silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis) to determine the relationships of THg concentrations between and within tissue groups. Total Hg concentrations were highest in the eight muscle regions with no significant differences in THg concentrations between the different muscle regions and muscle types (red and white). Results from tissue collected from any muscle region would be representative of all muscle sample locations. Total Hg concentrations were lowest in samples taken from the fin inner core of the first dorsal, pectoral, and caudal (lower lobe) fins. Mercury concentrations for samples taken from the trailing margin of the dorsal, pectoral, and caudal fins (upper and lower lobe) were also not significantly different from each other for both species. Significant relationships were found between THg concentrations in dorsal axial muscle tissue and the fin inner core, liver, kidney, spleen and heart for both species as well as the THg concentrations between the dorsal fin trailing margin and the heart for the silky shark and all other sampled tissue types for the bonnethead shark. Our results suggest that biopsy sampling of dorsal muscle can provide data that can effectively estimate THg concentrations in specific organs without using more invasive, or lethal methods.
