Overview of Functionalized Porous Materials for Rare-Earth Element Separation and Recovery

The exceptional photoelectromagnetic characteristics of rare-earth elements contribute significantly to their indispensable position in the high-tech industry. The exponential expansion of the demand for high-purity rare earth and related compounds can be attributed to the swift advancement of contemporary technology. Nevertheless, rare-earth elements are finite and limited resources, and their excessive mining unavoidably results in resource depletion and environmental degradation. Hence, it is crucial to establish a highly effective approach for the extraction and reclamation of rare-earth elements. Adsorption is regarded as a promising technique for the recovery of rare-earth elements owing to its simplicity, environmentally friendly nature, and cost-effectiveness. The efficacy of adsorption is contingent upon the performance characteristics of the adsorbent material. Presently, there is a prevalent utilization of porous adsorbent materials with substantial specific surface areas and plentiful surface functional groups in the realm of selectively separating and recovering rare-earth elements. This paper presents a thorough examination of porous inorganic carbon materials, porous inorganic silicon materials, porous organic polymers, and metal-organic framework materials. The adsorption performance and processes for rare-earth elements are the focal points of discussion about these materials. Furthermore, this work investigates the potential applications of porous materials in the domain of the adsorption of rare-earth elements.

ZIF-8 Used for the Selective Recovery of Heavy Rare Earth Elements from Mining Wastewater

In this study, a sample of 2-methylimidazole zinc salt (ZIF-8) demonstrated high selectivity for the recovery of heavy rare earth elements (REEs) from real rare earth mining wastewater. Results show that the distribution coefficient values of Y3+ (4.02 × 104 mL·g-1), Gd3+ (7.8 × 104 mL·g-1), and Dy3+ (6.8 × 104 mL·g-1) are orders of magnitude higher than those of K+ (359.51 mL·g-1), Mn2+ (266.67 mL·g-1), Ca2+ (396.42 mL·g-1), and Mg2+ (239.48 mL·g-1). Moreover, the desorption efficiency of heavy REEs exceeded 40%. Advanced characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were utilized to elucidate that the heavy REEs were more likely to bind to the nitrogen atoms of imidazole groups on ZIF-8 compared to non-REEs. Furthermore, the adsorption and desorption of heavy REEs primarily depend on the chemical interaction confirmed by adsorption kinetics, isotherm model, and thermodynamic analysis, which involves the dissociation of water and the formation of REE-O bonds. Finally, the ZIF-8 exhibits a remarkable recovery efficiency of over 40% for heavy REEs in column tests conducted over 7h. The findings reported here provide new insights into the selective recovery of heavy REEs from real mining wastewater.

Environmental remediation of the norfloxacin in water by adsorption: Advances, current status and prospects

Antibiotics are considered as the new generation water pollutants as these disturb endocrine systems if water contaminated with antibiotics is consumed. Among many antibiotics norfloxacin is present in various natural water bodies globally. This antibiotic is considered an emerging pollutant due to its low degradation in aquatic animals. Besides, it has many side effects on human vital organs. Therefore, the present article discusses the recent advances in the removal of norfloxacin by adsorption. This article describes the presence of norfloxacin in natural water, consumption, toxicity, various adsorbents for norfloxacin removal, optimization factors for norfloxacin removal, kinetics, thermodynamics, modeling, adsorption mechanism and regeneration of the adsorbents. Adsorption takes place in a monolayer following the Langmuir model. The Pseudo-second order model represents the kinetic data. The adsorption capacity ranged from 0.924 to 1282 mg g-1. In this sense, the parameters such as the NFX concentration added to the adsorbent textural properties exerted a great influence. Besides, the fixed bed-based removal at a large scale is also included. In addition to this, the simulation studies were also discussed to describe the adsorption mechanism. Finally, the research challenges and future perspectives have also been highlighted. This article will be highly useful for academicians, researchers, industry persons, and government authorities for designing future advanced experiments.

Renewable-based treatment solution of Reactive Blue 21 dye on fly ash as low-cost and sustainable adsorbent

This study investigated the removal of Reactive Blue 21 (RB 21) dye from aqueous solutions by adsorption, evaluating the waste fly ash (FA). The effects of the parameters, such as initial dye concentration (100-750 mg/L), initial pH (2.0-8.0), adsorbent dose (1.0-4.0 g/L), and temperature (298-323 K) on the adsorption process were investigated. The optimum initial pH value was 2.0 for the highest RB21 dye removal (75.2 mg/g). At optimized conditions (pH 2.0, an adsorbent dosage of 1.0 g/L, a dye concentration of 750 mg/L, and an equilibrium time of 72 h), the highest adsorption capacity was found to be 105.2 mg/g. Moreover, the results of the kinetic studies fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Equilibrium data were best represented by the Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 103.41 mg/g at 323 K. ΔGads0 values were negative and varied from 11.64 to 9.50 kJ/mol in the temperature range of 298-323 K, the values of enthalpy (ΔHadso) and entropy (ΔSadso) of thermodynamics parameters were calculated as 37.62 kJ/mol and 86.67 J/mol K, respectively, indicating that this process was endothermic. Furthermore, the adsorbent costs for powdered activated carbon (PAC) and FA to remove 1 kg of RB 21 dye from aqueous solutions are calculated as 2.52 U.S. $ and 0.34 U.S. $, respectively. It is seen that the cost of FA is approximately 7.4 times lower than PAC. The results showed that FA, a low-cost industrial waste, was promising for the adsorption of RB 21 from aqueous solutions.

Effect of mechanical-chemical modification on adsorption of beryllium by calcite

The treatment of beryllium wastewater has become a major problem in industry. In this paper, CaCO3 is creatively proposed to treat beryllium-containing wastewater. Calcite was modified by an omnidirectional planetary ball mill by a mechanical-chemical method. The results show that the maximum adsorption capacity of CaCO3 for beryllium is up to 45 mg/g. The optimum treatment conditions were pH = 7 and the amount of adsorbent was 1 g/L, and the best removal rate was 99%. The concentration of beryllium in the CaCO3-treated solution is less than 5 μg/L, which meets the international emission standard. The results show that the surface co-precipitation reaction between CaCO3 and Be (II) mainly occurs. Two different precipitates are generated on the used-CaCO3 surface; one is the tightly connected Be (OH)2 precipitation, and the other is the loose Be2(OH)2CO3 precipitation. When the pH of the solution exceeds 5.5, Be2+ in the solution is first precipitated by Be (OH)2. After CaCO3 is added, CO32- will further react with Be3(OH)33+ to form Be2(OH)2CO3 precipitation. CaCO3 can be considered as an adsorbent with great potential to remove beryllium from industrial wastewater.

The adsorbent preparation of lanthanum functionalized sponge based on CMC coating for effective phosphorous removal

Eutrophication is a severe worldwide concern caused by excessive phosphorus release. Thus, significant efforts have been made to develop phosphorus removal techniques, particularly by nanomaterial adsorption. However, because of the limitations associated with nanoparticles including easy agglomeration, and separation challenges, a novel nanocomposite adsorbent with great adsorption performance is urgently required. A sponge adsorbent (MS-CMC@La) was developed in this study to remove phosphorus using melamine sponge (MS), LaCl3, and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The results of SEM/EDS, FTIR, and XPS demonstrated that La was well-dispersed on MS-CMC@La. Adsorption isotherm and kinetics met with the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.981) and the pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 = 0.989), respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of MS-CMC@La was found to be 15.28 mg/g; the material exhibited excellent selectivity toward phosphorus in the presence of coexisting anion except of F-; the adsorption behavior was greatly impacted by pH. Furthermore, the electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange and inner-sphere coordination regulate the phosphate adsorption mechanism, with inner-sphere coordination dominating. In summary, the nano-enriched materials developed in this study are capable of facilitating the application of functionalized sponges in the field of wastewater.

Improved recovery selectivity of rare earth elements from mining wastewater utilizing phytosynthesized iron nanoparticles

While rare earth elements (REEs) play key roles in many modern technologies, the selectivity of recovering of REEs from mining wastewater remains a critical problem. In this study, iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) synthesized from euphorbia cochinchinensis extracts were successfully used for selective recovery of REEs from real mining wastewater with removal efficiencies of 89.4% for Y(III), 79.8% for Ce(III) and only 6.15% for Zn(Ⅱ). FTIR and XPS analysis suggested that the high selective removal efficiency of Y(III) and Ce(III) relative to Zn(Ⅱ) on FeNPs was due to a combination of selective REEs adsorption via complexing with O or N, ion exchange with H+ present in functional groups contained within the capping layer and electrostatic interactions. Adsorptions of Y(III) and Ce(III) on FeNPs conformed to pseudo second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model with maximum adsorption capacities of 5.10 and 0.695 mg∙g-1, respectively. The desorption efficiencies of Y(III) and Ce(III) were, respectively, 95.0 and 97.9% in 0.05 M acetic acid, where desorption involved competitive ion exchange between Y(III), Ce(III) and Zn(Ⅱ) with H+ contained in acetic acid and intraparticle diffusion. After four consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, adsorption efficiencies for Y(III) and Ce(III) remained relatively high at 52.7% and 50.1%, respectively, while desorption efficiencies of Y(III) and Ce(III) were > 80.0% and 95.0%, respectively. Overall, excellent reusability suggests that FeNPs can practically serve as a potential high-quality selectivity material for recovering REEs from mining wastewaters.

Characterization of copper binding to different molecular weight fractions of dissolved organic matter in surface water

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a kind of substance with complex compositions and wide molecular weight distribution, which can strongly combine with various pollutants. Therefore, the binding characteristics of DOM and heavy metal pollutants can be studied specifically according to the binding characteristics of DOM and pollutants. In this study, DOM in surface water bodies was divided into three levels (MW < 1 kDa, 1 kDa < MW < 5 kDa, MW > 5 kDa) according to different molecular weights (MW). The binding properties were investigated by fluorescence spectrum analysis and complex model. Four components (C1-C4) were identified by PARAFAC. Among them, the contribution rate of protein-like components C1, C2 and C4 to the total fluorescence intensity reached more than 78%, and the log Ka values of low molecular weight components were the highest, which were 3.28, 3.14 and 3.47, respectively, indicating higher binding ability with Cu2+.With the decrease of molecular weight, the log Kb value increases, indicating that the complexation is more stable. The humic component C3 in high molecular weight has stronger binding stability with Cu2+, but the number of binding sites for C3 is 0.36, while that for C2 is 1.51, indicating that its binding sites and binding ability are relatively low. The results showed that the DOM ligand of Cu2+ in surface water showed a certain molecular weight dependence. In addition, different MW DOM lead to different pollution forms. Different properties of DOM ligand combined with Cu2+ were studied in order to control the migration, transformation, bioavailability, morphology and stability of heavy metal pollutants, and to provide theoretical support for the practical application management of surface water pollution control.

Co-transport of arsenic and micro/nano-plastics in saturated soil

Contaminants can co-exist and migrate together in the environment, causing complex (and sometimes unexpected) transport dynamics which challenge the efficient remediation of individual contaminants. The co-transport dynamics, however, remained obscure for some contaminants, such as arsenic and micro/nano-plastics (MNPs). To fill this knowledge gap, this study explored the co-transport dynamics of arsenic and MNP particles in saturated soil by combining laboratory experiments and stochastic model analysis. Isothermal adsorption and sand column transport experiments showed that the adsorption of arsenic by MNP particles followed the Freundlich model, with a maximum adsorption of 2.425 mg/g for the MNP particles with a diameter of 100 nm. In the presence of MNP particles, the efflux concentration of arsenic ions declined due to adsorption, where the decline rate decreased with the increasing MNP size and increased with the increasing adsorption capacity. Experimental results also showed that the 100 nm nano-plastic particles prohibited arsenic transport in saturated sand columns, while the 5 μm microplastics enhanced arsenic transport due to electrostatic adsorption and media pore plugging. A tempered time fractional advective-dispersion equation was then proposed to quantify the observed breakthrough curves of arsenic. The results showed that this model can reliably capture the co-transport behavior of arsenic with MNPs in the saturated soil with all coefficients of determination over 0.97, and particularly, the small MNP particles facilitated anomalous transport of arsenic. This study therefore improved the understanding and quantification of the co-transport of arsenic and MNPs in soil.

Facile adsorption-electroflotation method for the removal of heavy metal ions from water using carbon nanomaterials

Due to the none-biodegradable and carcinogenic nature of toxic metal ions, a novel sorption-electroflotation method was developed using carbon nanomaterials. The metal ions removed were Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II), Fe(II), and Cu(II) using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanoshells (CNSs). The porous structure, morphology, composition, and surface properties of carbon nanomaterials, viz. the presence and number of functional groups are characterized by methods of low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, scanning electron microscopy, Boem, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The surface of the materials was rough with varied particle sizes. Regardless of the sorbed ion and the nature of the nanomaterial, the Langmuir, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich, and Flory-Higgins models were applied to the data. The maximum sorption removal on CNTs were 15.0-69.0, 36.0-75.0, 33.0-72.0, 18.0-70.0, 29.0-69.0% for Fe(II), Zn(II), Co(II), Cu(II), and Ni(II) while these values on CNSs were 19.0-53, 23.0-58.0, 30.0-79.0, 12.0-46.0, and 41.0-86%. But after simultaneous sorption-electroflotation, the percentage removal was 99.0, 97.0, 95.0, 99.0, and 52% for these metal ions, indicating an excellent combination of sorption-electro flotation. The method is highly beneficial to work in varied pH ranges as sorption and electroflotation gave the best results in acidic and basic mediums. The method is very effective, efficient, and inexpensive and can be used for the removal of the reported metal ions in water.

Simple preparation of a CuO@γ-Al2O3 Fenton-like catalyst and its photocatalytic degradation function

We designed a photocatalyst and developed sustainable wastewater purification technology, which have significant advantages in effectively solving the global problem of drinking water shortage. In this study, a new nanocomposite was reported and shown to be a catalyst with excellent performance; CuO was coated successively onto functionalized nano γ-Al₂O₃, and this novel structure could provide abundant active sites. We evaluated the performance of the CuO@γ-Al₂O₃ nanocomposite catalyst for polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) degradation under visible light irradiation. Under optimized conditions (calcination temperature, 450 °C; mass ratio of γ-Al₂O₃:Cu(NO₃)₂·3H₂O, 1:15; pH value, 7; catalyst dosage, 2.6 g/L; reaction temperature, 20 °C; and H₂O₂ dosage, 0.2 g/mL), the CuO@γ-Al₂O₃ nanocomposite catalyst presented an excellent PVA removal rate of 99.21%. After ten consecutive degradation experiments, the catalyst could still maintain a PVA removal rate of 97.58%, thus demonstrating excellent reusability. This study provides an efficient and easy-to-prepare photocatalyst and proposes a mechanism for the synergistic effect of the photocatalytic reaction and the Fenton-like reaction.

Efficient adsorption of Pb(II) by sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate intercalated calcium aluminum hydrotalcites: kinetic, isotherm, and mechanisms

Two novel adsorbents of CaAl-LDHs and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) intercalated CaAl-LDHs (SDBS-CaAl-LDHs) were successfully prepared by co-precipitation. The main composition and physical properties of two samples were characterized by XRD, XPS, FT-IR, TG, and SEM. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to study the effect of pH, adsorption time, and initial concentration of Pb²⁺. The results showed that the prime adsorption conditions obtained were pH of 5.2 after 60 min with the initial concentration of 300 mg g^-1 for CaAl-LDHs and 350 mg g^-1 for SDBS-CaAl-LDHs. At 303 K, the adsorption capacities and removal rates of CaAl-LDHs and SDBS-CaAl-LDHs were found to be 456.05 mg g^-1, 91.21% and 682.26 mg g^-1, 97.47%, respectively. For CaAl-LDHs, the kinetic data for Pb²⁺ was best fitted with pseudo-2nd-order model, and the adsorption isotherms followed Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm model. The adsorption data of SDBS-CaAl-LDHs can be best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir model. The Pb²⁺ adsorption mechanism on SDBS-CaAl-LDHs was explored by XRD, XPS, and SEM, and the important roles of the electrostatic attraction, precipitation, complexation, and ion exchange were demonstrated. The Langmuir adsorption capacities for SDBS-CaAl-LDHs were 797.63, 828.76, and 854.29 mg g^-1 at 293 k, 303 k, and 313 k, respectively. Thus, SDBS-CaAl-LDHs may be a highly economical adsorbent for the treatment of contaminated water.

Kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics of oil spills removal by novel amphiphilic Chitosan-g-Octanal Schiff base polymer developed by click grafting technique

Kinetic, isothermal and thermodynamic studies for the oil spills removal process have been conducted by Chitosan and novel amphiphilic Chitosan-g-Octanal Schiff base adsorbents developed by click chemistry and evaluated successfully in the removal of heavy crude oil spills. Chitosan was first prepared from wastes of marine shrimp shells, and then Chitosan and Chitosan-g-Octanal Schiff base adsorbents were synthesized and verified their structures, thermal stability and their morphological changes using FT-IR spectroscopy, TGA and SEM. The oil adsorption percentages (%) using heavy crude oil were 96.41% for the Chitosan-g-Octanal Schiff base adsorbent compared to 64.99% for native Chitosan counterpart. High rate of adsorption was observed where 40% of oil adsorbed within 15 min only using the Chitosan-g-Octanal Schiff base adsorbent compared to 90 min for native Chitosan adsorbent. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second order model, and the equilibrium data were sufficiently fitted with the Langmuir model with a maximum adsorption capacity 30.30 g/g at 25 °C. Thermodynamic parameters computed from Van’t Hoff plot confirmed the process to be endothermic, favorable and spontaneous.

Adsorptive Behavior of Tartaric Acid Treated Holarrhena antidysenterica and Citrullus colocynthis Biowastes for Decolourization of Congo Red Dye from Aqueous Solutions

The aim of the present work is to eradicate Congo red (CR) dye from aqueous solutions since the dye compounds are harmful to human life and the environment leading to detrimental results. For this purpose, Holarrhena antidysenterica (HA) and Citrullus colocynthis (CC) adsorbents were used for the adsorptive removal of Congo red dye from wastewaters. The unmodified adsorbents (U-HA and U-CC) were chemically modified using tartaric acid (TA). Morphological structures were examined by FTIR and SEM. Batch adsorption studies were tested at a variety of pH, time exposure, temperatures, and adsorbent dosages. Thermodynamic parameters such as Gibbs free energy ( $∆G^{°}$ ), enthalpy ( $∆H^{°}$ ), entropy changes ( $∆S^{°}$ ), and energy of activation ( $E_{\text{a}}$ ) were also calculated. The results revealed that tartaric acid-Citrullus colocynthis (TA-CC) gave optimum conditions of time of contact (35 min), temperature conditions (40°C), pH (3), and dosage of adsorbent (1.6 g) for maximum dye removal. Tartaric acid-Holarrhena antidysenterica (TA-HA) gave equilibrium time of contact (30 min), temperature (40°C), and pH optimum (2) along with a 1.6 g dosage of adsorbent. Mechanistic understanding of adsorption isotherm provided that the Langmuir model was followed by raw and modified adsorbents. Maximum adsorption capacities $Q_{\max }$ attained were 60.61 (mg g-1), 128.21 (mg g-1), 87.71 (mg g-1), and 131.57 (mg g-1), respectively, for U-HA, TA-HA, U-CC, and TA-CC. The results of kinetic modeling displayed a high value of $R^2$ (0.99) along with minimal error (RMSE) for dye removal showing that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model has acceptable accuracy. Fourier transform infrared proposed the electrostatic, pi-pi interactions, and hydrogen bonding as dominant adsorption mechanisms at acidic pH, respectively. Rate-determining steps comprise both surface and intraparticle diffusions. Thermodynamics indicated that the dye adsorption of CR is spontaneous, exothermic, and favorable in nature. These agricultural wastes due to specific points such as low cost, availability, and high removal rates of adsorption are highly competent for the expulsion of anionic dye like CR from wastewaters.

Mesoporous Biopolymer Architecture Enhanced the Adsorption and Selectivity of Aqueous Heavy-Metal Ions

Halloysite nanotubes (HNT) and ball-milled biochar (BC) incorporated biocompatible mesoporous adsorbents (HNT-BC@Alg) were synthesized for adsorption of aqueous heavy-metal ions. HNT-BC@Alg outperformed the BC, HNT, and BC@Alg in removing cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb). Mesoporous structure (∼7.19 to 7.56 nm) of HNT-BC@Alg was developed containing an abundance of functional groups induced from encapsulated BC and tubular HNT, which allowed heavy metals to infiltrate and interact with the adsorbents. Siloxane groups from HNT, oxygen-containing functional groups from BC, and hydroxyl and carboxyl groups from alginate polymer play a significant role in the adsorption of heavy-metal ions. The removal percentage of heavy metals was recorded as Pb (∼99.97 to 99.05%) > Cu (∼95.01 to 90.53%) > Cd (∼92.5 to 55.25%) > Ni (∼80.85 to 50.6%), even in the presence of 0.01/0.001 M of CaCl₂ and Na₂SO₄ as background electrolytes and charged organic molecule under an environmentally relevant concentration (200 μg/L). The maximum adsorption capacities of Ni, Cd, Cu, and Pb were calculated as 2.85 ± 0.08, 6.96 ± 0.31, 16.87 ± 1.50, and 26.49 ± 2.04 mg/g, respectively. HNT-BC@Alg has fast sorption kinetics and maximum adsorption capacity within a short contact time (∼2 h). Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) elemental mapping exhibited that adsorbed heavy metals co-distributed with Ca, Si, and Al. The reduction of surface area, pore volume, and pore area of HNT-BC@Alg (after sorption of heavy metals) confirms that mesoporous surface (2-18 nm) supports diffusion, infiltration, and interaction. However, a lower range of mesoporous diameter of the adsorbent is more suitable for the adsorption of heavy-metal ions. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic models, demonstrating the monolayer formation of heavy-metal ions through both the physical sorption and chemical sorption, including pore filling, ion exchange, and electrostatic interaction.
