K-space reconstruction of magnetic resonance inverse imaging (K-InI) of human visuomotor systems

Objective

This review article gives an account of the development of the MR-encephalography (MREG) method, which started as a mere ‘Gedankenexperiment’ in 2005 and gradually developed into a method for ultrafast measurement of physiological activities in the brain. After going through different approaches covering k-space with radial, rosette, and concentric shell trajectories we have settled on a stack-of-spiral trajectory, which allows full brain coverage with (nominal) 3 mm isotropic resolution in 100 ms. The very high acceleration factor is facilitated by the near-isotropic k-space coverage, which allows high acceleration in all three spatial dimensions.

Methods

The methodological section covers the basic sequence design as well as recent advances in image reconstruction including the targeted reconstruction, which allows real-time feedback applications, and—most recently—the time-domain principal component reconstruction (tPCR), which applies a principal component analysis of the acquired time domain data as a sparsifying transformation to improve reconstruction speed as well as quality.

Applications

Although the BOLD-response is rather slow, the high speed acquisition of MREG allows separation of BOLD-effects from cardiac and breathing related pulsatility. The increased sensitivity enables direct detection of the dynamic variability of resting state networks as well as localization of single interictal events in epilepsy patients. A separate and highly intriguing application is aimed at the investigation of the glymphatic system by assessment of the spatiotemporal patterns of cardiac and breathing related pulsatility.

Discussion

MREG has been developed to push the speed limits of fMRI. Compared to multiband-EPI this allows considerably faster acquisition at the cost of reduced image quality and spatial resolution.

Real-time presurgical resting-state fMRI in patients with brain tumors: Quality control and comparison with task-fMRI and intraoperative mapping

Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) is a promising task-free functional imaging approach, which may complement or replace task-based fMRI (tfMRI) in patients who have difficulties performing required tasks. However, rsfMRI is highly sensitive to head movement and physiological noise, and validation relative to tfMRI and intraoperative electrocortical mapping is still necessary. In this study, we investigate (a) the feasibility of real-time rsfMRI for presurgical mapping of eloquent networks with monitoring of data quality in patients with brain tumors and (b) rsfMRI localization of eloquent cortex compared with tfMRI and intraoperative electrocortical stimulation (ECS) in retrospective analysis. Five brain tumor patients were studied with rsfMRI and tfMRI on a clinical 3T scanner using MultiBand(8)-echo planar imaging (EPI) with repetition time: 400 ms. Moving-averaged sliding-window correlation analysis with regression of motion parameters and signals from white matter and cerebrospinal fluid was used to map sensorimotor and language resting-state networks. Data quality monitoring enabled rapid optimization of scan protocols, early identification of task noncompliance, and head movement-related false-positive connectivity to determine scan continuation or repetition. Sensorimotor and language resting-state networks were identifiable within 1 min of scan time. The Euclidean distance between ECS and rsfMRI connectivity and task-activation in motor cortex, Broca's, and Wernicke's areas was 5-10 mm, with the exception of discordant rsfMRI and ECS localization of Wernicke's area in one patient due to possible cortical reorganization and/or altered neurovascular coupling. This study demonstrates the potential of real-time high-speed rsfMRI for presurgical mapping of eloquent cortex with real-time data quality control, and clinically acceptable concordance of rsfMRI with tfMRI and ECS localization.

Dynamic lag analysis reveals atypical brain information flow in autism spectrum disorder

This study investigated whole‐brain dynamic lag pattern variations between neurotypical (NT) individuals and individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by applying a novel technique called dynamic lag analysis (DLA). The use of 3D magnetic resonance encephalography data with repetition time = 100 msec enables highly accurate analysis of the spread of activity between brain networks. Sixteen resting‐state networks (RSNs) with the highest spatial correlation between NT individuals (n = 20) and individuals with ASD (n = 20) were analyzed. The dynamic lag pattern variation between each RSN pair was investigated using DLA, which measures time lag variation between each RSN pair combination and statistically defines how these lag patterns are altered between ASD and NT groups. DLA analyses indicated that 10.8% of the 120 RSN pairs had statistically significant (P‐value <0.003) dynamic lag pattern differences that survived correction with surrogate data thresholding. Alterations in lag patterns were concentrated in salience, executive, visual, and default‐mode networks, supporting earlier findings of impaired brain connectivity in these regions in ASD. 92.3% and 84.6% of the significant RSN pairs revealed shorter mean and median temporal lags in ASD versus NT, respectively. Taken together, these results suggest that altered lag patterns indicating atypical spread of activity between large‐scale functional brain networks may contribute to the ASD phenotype. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by atypical neurodevelopment. Using an ultra‐fast neuroimaging procedure, we investigated communication across brain regions in adults with ASD compared with neurotypical (NT) individuals. We found that ASD individuals had altered information flow patterns across brain regions. Atypical patterns were concentrated in salience, executive, visual, and default‐mode network areas of the brain that have previously been implicated in the pathophysiology of the disorder.

3D Multi-Resolution Optical Flow Analysis of Cardiovascular Pulse Propagation in Human Brain

The brain is cleaned from waste by glymphatic clearance serving a similar purpose as the lymphatic system in the rest of the body. Impairment of the glymphatic brain clearance precedes protein accumulation and reduced cognitive function in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cardiovascular pulsations are a primary driving force of the glymphatic brain clearance. We developed a method to quantify cardiovascular pulse propagation in the human brain with magnetic resonance encephalography (MREG). We extended a standard optical flow estimation method to three spatial dimensions, with a multi-resolution processing scheme. We added application-specific criteria for discarding inaccurate results. With the proposed method, it is now possible to estimate the propagation of cardiovascular pulse wavefronts from the whole brain MREG data sampled at 10 Hz. The results show that on average the cardiovascular pulse propagates from major arteries via cerebral spinal fluid spaces into all tissue compartments in the brain. We present an example, that cardiovascular pulsations are significantly altered in AD: coefficient of variation and sample entropy of the pulse propagation speed in the lateral ventricles change in AD. These changes are in line with the theory of glymphatic clearance impairment in AD. The proposed non-invasive method can assess a performance indicator related to the glymphatic clearance in the human brain.

Simultaneous multi-slice inverse imaging of the human brain

Ultrafast functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can measure blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signals with high sensitivity and specificity. Here we propose a novel method: simultaneous multi-slice inverse imaging (SMS-InI) — a combination of simultaneous multi-slice excitation, simultaneous echo refocusing (SER), blipped controlled aliasing in parallel imaging echo-planar imaging (EPI), and regularized image reconstruction. Using a 32-channel head coil array on a 3 T scanner, SMS-InI achieves nominal isotropic 5-mm spatial resolution and 10 Hz sampling rate at the whole-brain level. Compared with traditional inverse imaging, we found that SMS-InI has higher spatial resolution with lower signal leakage and higher time-domain signal-to-noise ratio with the optimized regularization parameter in the reconstruction. SMS-InI achieved higher effective resolution and higher detection power in detecting visual cortex activity than InI. SMS-InI also detected subcortical fMRI signals with the similar sensitivity and localization accuracy like EPI. The spatiotemporal resolution of SMS-InI was used to reveal that presenting visual stimuli with 0.2 s latency between left and right visual hemifield led to 0.2 s relative hemodynamic response latency between the left and right visual cortices. Together, these results indicate that SMS-InI is a useful tool in measuring cortical and subcortical hemodynamic responses with high spatiotemporal resolution.

On the detection of high frequency correlations in resting state fMRI

Current studies of resting-state connectivity rely on coherent signal fluctuations at frequencies below 0.1 Hz, however, recent studies using high-speed fMRI have shown that fluctuations above 0.5 Hz may exist. This study replicates the feasibility of measuring high frequency (HF) correlations in six healthy controls and a patient with a brain tumor while analyzing non-physiological signal sources via simulation. Resting-state data were acquired using a high-speed multi-slab echo-volumar imaging pulse sequence with 136 ms temporal resolution. Bandpass frequency filtering in combination with sliding window seed-based connectivity analysis using running mean of the correlation maps was employed to map HF correlations up to 3.7 Hz. Computer simulations of Rician noise and the underlying point spread function were analyzed to estimate baseline spatial autocorrelation levels in four major networks (auditory, sensorimotor, visual, and default-mode). Using seed regions based on Brodmann areas, the auditory and default-mode networks were observed to have significant frequency band dependent HF correlations above baseline spatial autocorrelation levels. Correlations in the sensorimotor network were at trend level. The auditory network was still observed using a unilateral single voxel seed. In the patient, HF auditory correlations showed a spatial displacement near the tumor consistent with the displacement seen at low frequencies. In conclusion, our data suggest that HF connectivity in the human brain may be observable with high-speed fMRI, however, the detection sensitivity may depend on the network observed, data acquisition technique, and analysis method.

Increased fMRI Sensitivity at Equal Data Burden Using Averaged Shifted Echo Acquisition

There is growing evidence as to the benefits of collecting BOLD fMRI data with increased sampling rates. However, many of the newly developed acquisition techniques developed to collect BOLD data with ultra-short TRs require hardware, software, and non-standard analytic pipelines that may not be accessible to all researchers. We propose to incorporate the method of shifted echo into a standard multi-slice, gradient echo EPI sequence to achieve a higher sampling rate with a TR of <1 s with acceptable spatial resolution. We further propose to incorporate temporal averaging of consecutively acquired EPI volumes to both ameliorate the reduced temporal signal-to-noise inherent in ultra-fast EPI sequences and reduce the data burden. BOLD data were collected from 11 healthy subjects performing a simple, event-related visual-motor task with four different EPI sequences: (1) reference EPI sequence with TR = 1440 ms, (2) shifted echo EPI sequence with TR = 700 ms, (3) shifted echo EPI sequence with every two consecutively acquired EPI volumes averaged and effective TR = 1400 ms, and (4) shifted echo EPI sequence with every four consecutively acquired EPI volumes averaged and effective TR = 2800 ms. Both the temporally averaged sequences exhibited increased temporal signal-to-noise over the shifted echo EPI sequence. The shifted echo sequence with every two EPI volumes averaged also had significantly increased BOLD signal change compared with the other three sequences, while the shifted echo sequence with every four EPI volumes averaged had significantly decreased BOLD signal change compared with the other three sequences. The results indicated that incorporating the method of shifted echo into a standard multi-slice EPI sequence is a viable method for achieving increased sampling rate for collecting event-related BOLD data. Further, consecutively averaging every two consecutively acquired EPI volumes significantly increased the measured BOLD signal change and the subsequently calculated activation map statistics.

Increasing fMRI sampling rate improves Granger causality estimates

Estimation of causal interactions between brain areas is necessary for elucidating large-scale functional brain networks underlying behavior and cognition. Granger causality analysis of time series data can quantitatively estimate directional information flow between brain regions. Here, we show that such estimates are significantly improved when the temporal sampling rate of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is increased 20-fold. Specifically, healthy volunteers performed a simple visuomotor task during blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) contrast based whole-head inverse imaging (InI). Granger causality analysis based on raw InI BOLD data sampled at 100-ms resolution detected the expected causal relations, whereas when the data were downsampled to the temporal resolution of 2 s typically used in echo-planar fMRI, the causality could not be detected. An additional control analysis, in which we SINC interpolated additional data points to the downsampled time series at 0.1-s intervals, confirmed that the improvements achieved with the real InI data were not explainable by the increased time-series length alone. We therefore conclude that the high-temporal resolution of InI improves the Granger causality connectivity analysis of the human brain.

Improving the spatial resolution of magnetic resonance inverse imaging via the blipped-CAIPI acquisition scheme

Using simultaneous acquisition from multiple channels of a radio-frequency (RF) coil array, magnetic resonance inverse imaging (InI) achieves functional MRI acquisitions at a rate of 100ms per whole-brain volume. InI accelerates the scan by leaving out partition encoding steps and reconstructs images by solving under-determined inverse problems using RF coil sensitivity information. Hence, the correlated spatial information available in the coil array causes spatial blurring in the InI reconstruction. Here, we propose a method that employs gradient blips in the partition encoding direction during the acquisition to provide extra spatial encoding in order to better differentiate signals from different partitions. According to our simulations, this blipped-InI (bInI) method can increase the average spatial resolution by 15.1% (1.3mm) across the whole brain and from 32.6% (4.2mm) in subcortical regions, as compared to the InI method. In a visual fMRI experiment, we demonstrate that, compared to InI, the spatial distribution of bInI BOLD response is more consistent with that of a conventional echo-planar imaging (EPI) at the level of individual subjects. With the improved spatial resolution, especially in subcortical regions, bInI can be a useful fMRI tool for obtaining high spatiotemporal information for clinical and cognitive neuroscience studies.

High-speed real-time resting-state FMRI using multi-slab echo-volumar imaging

We recently demonstrated that ultra-high-speed real-time fMRI using multi-slab echo-volumar imaging (MEVI) significantly increases sensitivity for mapping task-related activation and resting-state networks (RSNs) compared to echo-planar imaging (Posse et al., 2012). In the present study we characterize the sensitivity of MEVI for mapping RSN connectivity dynamics, comparing independent component analysis (ICA) and a novel seed-based connectivity analysis (SBCA) that combines sliding-window correlation analysis with meta-statistics. This SBCA approach is shown to minimize the effects of confounds, such as movement, and CSF and white matter signal changes, and enables real-time monitoring of RSN dynamics at time scales of tens of seconds. We demonstrate highly sensitive mapping of eloquent cortex in the vicinity of brain tumors and arterio-venous malformations, and detection of abnormal resting-state connectivity in epilepsy. In patients with motor impairment, resting-state fMRI provided focal localization of sensorimotor cortex compared with more diffuse activation in task-based fMRI. The fast acquisition speed of MEVI enabled segregation of cardiac-related signal pulsation using ICA, which revealed distinct regional differences in pulsation amplitude and waveform, elevated signal pulsation in patients with arterio-venous malformations and a trend toward reduced pulsatility in gray matter of patients compared with healthy controls. Mapping cardiac pulsation in cortical gray matter may carry important functional information that distinguishes healthy from diseased tissue vasculature. This novel fMRI methodology is particularly promising for mapping eloquent cortex in patients with neurological disease, having variable degree of cooperation in task-based fMRI. In conclusion, ultra-high-real-time speed fMRI enhances the sensitivity of mapping the dynamics of resting-state connectivity and cerebro-vascular pulsatility for clinical and neuroscience research applications.

fMRI hemodynamics accurately reflects neuronal timing in the human brain measured by MEG

Neuronal activation sequence information is essential for understanding brain functions. Extracting such timing information from blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) fMRI is confounded by interregional neurovascular differences and poorly understood relations between BOLD and electrophysiological response delays. Here, we recorded whole-head BOLD fMRI at 100 ms resolution and magnetoencephalography (MEG) during a visuomotor reaction-time task. Both methods detected the same activation sequence across five regions, from visual towards motor cortices, with linearly correlated interregional BOLD and MEG response delays. The smallest significant interregional BOLD delay was 100 ms; all delays ≥400 ms were significant. Switching the order of external events reversed the sequence of BOLD activations, indicating that interregional neurovascular differences did not confound the results. This may open new avenues for using fMRI to follow rapid activation sequences in the brain.

Whole-head rapid fMRI acquisition using echo-shifted magnetic resonance inverse imaging

The acquisition time of BOLD contrast functional MRI (fMRI) data with whole-brain coverage typically requires a sampling rate of one volume in 1-3s. Although the volumetric sampling time of a few seconds is adequate for measuring the sluggish hemodynamic response (HDR) to neuronal activation, faster sampling of fMRI might allow for monitoring of rapid physiological fluctuations and detection of subtle neuronal activation timing information embedded in BOLD signals. Previous studies utilizing a highly accelerated volumetric MR inverse imaging (InI) technique have provided a sampling rate of one volume per 100 ms with 5mm spatial resolution. Here, we propose a novel modification of this technique, the echo-shifted InI, which allows TE to be longer than TR, to measure BOLD fMRI at an even faster sampling rate of one volume per 25 ms with whole-brain coverage. Compared with conventional EPI, echo-shifted InI provided an 80-fold speedup with similar spatial resolution and less than 2-fold temporal SNR loss. The capability of echo-shifted InI to detect HDR timing differences was tested empirically. At the group level (n=6), echo-spaced InI was able to detect statistically significant HDR timing differences of as low as 50 ms in visual stimulus presentation. At the level of individual subjects, significant differences in HDR timing were detected for 400 ms stimulus-onset differences. Our results also show that the temporal resolution of 25 ms is necessary for maintaining the temporal detecting capability at this level. With the capabilities of being able to distinguish the timing differences in the millisecond scale, echo-shifted InI could be a useful fMRI tool for obtaining temporal information at a time scale closer to that of neuronal dynamics.

Constrained source space imaging: application to fast, region-based functional MRI

A new technique called constrained source space imaging is introduced that holds promise for ultrafast acquisition of functional magnetic resonance imaging data. A sparse set of arbitrarily positioned, coarse voxels is first localized using radiofrequency selective excitation, from which magnetization signals are separated using only the spatial sensitivities of multichannel receiver coils, without the need for k-space encoding using imaging gradients. This method permits very fast acquisitions of targeted magnetization without complex or time-consuming image reconstruction techniques. Furthermore, because the data acquisition is performed without imaging gradients, T2* decays can be densely sampled and processed for contrast enhancement to improve functional magnetic resonance imaging data quality. Here, the constrained source space imaging technique is validated in proof-of-concept form, for a simple functional magnetic resonance imaging motor task using a prototype dual-band stimulated echo acquisition mode excitation to image four voxels at TR = 250 ms. Results demonstrate good voxel signal separation and good characterization of hemodynamic responses in primary motor cortices (M1) and supplementary motor areas through T2* fitting of the measured signals. With further refinement, the constrained source space imaging method has potential utility in a priori ROI-based functional magnetic resonance imaging experiments with TR values under 100 ms. Rapid, multivoxel measurements of other sources of MR signal contrast are also possible.

Generalized INverse imaging (GIN): ultrafast fMRI with physiological noise correction

An ultrafast functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technique, called generalized inverse imaging (GIN), is proposed, which combines inverse imaging with a phase constraint-leading to a less underdetermined reconstruction-and physiological noise correction. A single 3D echo planar imaging (EPI) prescan is sufficient to obtain the necessary coil sensitivity information and reference images that are used to reconstruct standard images, so that standard analysis methods are applicable. A moving dots stimulus paradigm was chosen to assess the performance of GIN. We find that the spatial localization of activation for GIN is comparable to an EPI protocol and that maximum z-scores increase significantly. The high temporal resolution of GIN (50 ms) and the acquisition of the phase information enable unaliased sampling and regression of physiological signals. Using the phase time courses obtained from the 32 channels of the receiver coils as nuisance regressors in a general linear model results in significant improvement of the functional activation, rendering the acquisition of external physiological signals unnecessary. The proposed physiological noise correction can in principle be used for other fMRI protocols, such as simultaneous multislice acquisitions, which acquire the phase information sufficiently fast and sample physiological signals unaliased.

Ultrafast inverse imaging techniques for fMRI

Inverse imaging (InI) supercharges the sampling rate of traditional functional MRI 10-100 fold at a cost of a moderate reduction in spatial resolution. The technique is inspired by similarities between multi-sensor magnetoencephalography (MEG) and highly parallel radio-frequency (RF) MRI detector arrays. Using presently available 32-channel head coils at 3T, InI can be sampled at 10 Hz and provides about 5-mm cortical spatial resolution with whole-brain coverage. Here we discuss the present applications of InI, as well as potential future challenges and opportunities in further improving its spatiotemporal resolution and sensitivity. InI may become a helpful tool for clinicians and neuroscientists for revealing the complex dynamics of brain functions during task-related and resting states.

Enhancement of temporal resolution and BOLD sensitivity in real-time fMRI using multi-slab echo-volumar imaging

In this study, a new approach to high-speed fMRI using multi-slab echo-volumar imaging (EVI) is developed that minimizes geometrical image distortion and spatial blurring, and enables nonaliased sampling of physiological signal fluctuation to increase BOLD sensitivity compared to conventional echo-planar imaging (EPI). Real-time fMRI using whole brain 4-slab EVI with 286 ms temporal resolution (4mm isotropic voxel size) and partial brain 2-slab EVI with 136 ms temporal resolution (4×4×6 mm(3) voxel size) was performed on a clinical 3 Tesla MRI scanner equipped with 12-channel head coil. Four-slab EVI of visual and motor tasks significantly increased mean (visual: 96%, motor: 66%) and maximum t-score (visual: 263%, motor: 124%) and mean (visual: 59%, motor: 131%) and maximum (visual: 29%, motor: 67%) BOLD signal amplitude compared with EPI. Time domain moving average filtering (2s width) to suppress physiological noise from cardiac and respiratory fluctuations further improved mean (visual: 196%, motor: 140%) and maximum (visual: 384%, motor: 200%) t-scores and increased extents of activation (visual: 73%, motor: 70%) compared to EPI. Similar sensitivity enhancement, which is attributed to high sampling rate at only moderately reduced temporal signal-to-noise ratio (mean: -52%) and longer sampling of the BOLD effect in the echo-time domain compared to EPI, was measured in auditory cortex. Two-slab EVI further improved temporal resolution for measuring task-related activation and enabled mapping of five major resting state networks (RSNs) in individual subjects in 5 min scans. The bilateral sensorimotor, the default mode and the occipital RSNs were detectable in time frames as short as 75 s. In conclusion, the high sampling rate of real-time multi-slab EVI significantly improves sensitivity for studying the temporal dynamics of hemodynamic responses and for characterizing functional networks at high field strength in short measurement times.

Multi-projection magnetic resonance inverse imaging of the human visuomotor system

Using highly parallel radiofrequency (RF) detection, magnetic resonance inverse imaging (InI) can achieve 100 ms temporal resolution with whole brain coverage. This is achieved by trading off partition encoding steps and thus spatial resolution for a higher acquisition rate. The reduced spatial information is estimated by solving under-determined inverse problems using RF coil sensitivity information. Here we propose multi projection inverse imaging (mInI) to combine different projection images to improve the spatial resolution of InI. Specifically, coronal, sagittal, and transverse projection images were acquired from different runs of the fMRI acquisitions using a 32-channel head coil array. Simulations show that mInI improves the quality of the instantaneous image reconstruction significantly. Going from one projection to three projections, the spatial resolution quantified by the full width at half maximum of the point-spread function (PSF) is improved from 2.6 pixels to 1.4 pixels (4 mm nominal resolution per pixel). Considering the shape of the PSF, the effective spatial resolution is improved from 16.9 pixels to 4.7 pixels. In vivo fMRI experiments using a two-choice reaction time tasks show visual and sensorimotor cortical activities spatially consistent with typical EPI data, yet mInI offers 100 ms temporal resolution with the whole brain coverage. The mInI data with three projections revealed that the sensorimotor cortex was activated 700 ms after the visual cortex. mInI can be applied to BOLD-contrast fMRI experiments to characterize the dynamics of the activated brain areas with a high spatiotemporal resolution.

Fast undersampled functional magnetic resonance imaging using nonlinear regularized parallel image reconstruction

In this article we aim at improving the performance of whole brain functional imaging at very high temporal resolution (100 ms or less). This is achieved by utilizing a nonlinear regularized parallel image reconstruction scheme, where the penalty term of the cost function is set to the L(1)-norm measured in some transform domain. This type of image reconstruction has gained much attention recently due to its application in compressed sensing and has proven to yield superior spatial resolution and image quality over e.g. Tikhonov regularized image reconstruction. We demonstrate that by using nonlinear regularization it is possible to more accurately localize brain activation from highly undersampled k-space data at the expense of an increase in computation time.

Advances in High-Field BOLD fMRI

This review article examines the current state of BOLD fMRI at a high magnetic field strength of 7 Tesla. The following aspects are covered: a short description of the BOLD contrast, spatial and temporal resolution, BOLD sensitivity, localization and spatial specificity, technical challenges as well as an outlook on future developments are given. It is shown that the main technical challenges of performing BOLD fMRI at high magnetic field strengths-namely development of array coils, imaging sequences and parallel imaging reconstruction-have been solved successfully. The combination of these developments has lead to the availability of high-resolution BOLD fMRI protocols that are able to cover the whole brain with a repetition time (TR) shorter than 3 s. The structural information available from these high-resolution fMRI images itself is already very detailed, which helps to co-localize structure and function. Potential future applications include whole-brain connectivity analysis on a laminar resolution and single subject examinations.

Physiological noise reduction using volumetric functional magnetic resonance inverse imaging

Physiological noise arising from a variety of sources can significantly degrade the detection of task-related activity in BOLD-contrast fMRI experiments. If whole head spatial coverage is desired, effective suppression of oscillatory physiological noise from cardiac and respiratory fluctuations is quite difficult without external monitoring, since traditional EPI acquisition methods cannot sample the signal rapidly enough to satisfy the Nyquist sampling theorem, leading to temporal aliasing of noise. Using a combination of high speed magnetic resonance inverse imaging (InI) and digital filtering, we demonstrate that it is possible to suppress cardiac and respiratory noise without auxiliary monitoring, while achieving whole head spatial coverage and reasonable spatial resolution. Our systematic study of the effects of different moving average (MA) digital filters demonstrates that a MA filter with a 2 s window can effectively reduce the variance in the hemodynamic baseline signal, thereby achieving 57%-58% improvements in peak z-statistic values compared to unfiltered InI or spatially smoothed EPI data (FWHM = 8.6 mm). In conclusion, the high temporal sampling rates achievable with InI permit significant reductions in physiological noise using standard temporal filtering techniques that result in significant improvements in hemodynamic response estimation.

Functional magnetic resonance inverse imaging of human visuomotor systems using eigenspace linearly constrained minimum amplitude (eLCMA) beamformer

Recently proposed dynamic magnetic resonance (MR) inverse imaging (InI) is a novel parallel imaging reconstruction technique capable of improving the temporal resolution of blood-oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) contrast functional MRI (fMRI) to the order of milliseconds at the cost of moderate spatial resolution. Volumetric InI reconstructs spatial information from projection data by solving ill-posed inverse problems using simultaneous acquisitions from a RF coil array. Previously a spatial filtering technique based on linearly constrained minimum variance (LCMV) beamformer was suggested to localize the hemodynamic changes of dynamic InI data with improved spatial resolution and sensitivity. Here we report an advancement of the spatial filtering method, which combines the eigenspace projection of the measured data and the L1-norm minimization of the spatial filters' output noise amplitude, to further improve the detection power of BOLD contrast fMRI data. Using numerical simulation and in vivo data, we demonstrate that this eigenspace linearly constrained minimum amplitude (eLCMA) beamformer can reconstruct spatiotemporal hemodynamic signals with high statistical significance values and high spatial resolution in event-related two-choice reaction time visuomotor experiments.
