Abstract
AIMS Limited evidence exists regarding the association of selenium with risk of death in individuals with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study was designed to investigate the relationship between dietary selenium intake with mortality in a nationally representative sample of United States adults with NAFLD. METHODS Dietary selenium intake was assessed in 2274 NAFLD adults younger than 60 years of age from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III through a 24-hour dietary recall. NAFLD was diagnosed by liver ultrasound after excluding liver disease due to other causes. Cox proportional hazards models were utilized to assess the effect of dietary selenium intake on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among individuals with NAFLD. RESULTS At a median follow-up of 27.4 years, 577 deaths occurred in individuals with NAFLD, including 152 cardiovascular deaths. The U-shaped associations were discovered between selenium intake with all-cause (Pnolinear = 0.008) and cardiovascular mortality (Pnolinear < 0.001) in adults with NAFLD after multivariate adjustment, with the lowest risk around selenium intake of 121.7 or 125.9 μg/day, respectively. Selenium intake in the range of 104.1-142.4 μg/day was associated with a reduced risk of all-cause mortality and, otherwise, an increased risk. Selenium intake in the range of 104.1-150.6 μg/day was associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular death and, otherwise, an increased risk. CONCLUSIONS Both high and low selenium intake increased the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular death in adults younger than 60 years of age with NAFLD, which may help guide dietary adjustments and improve outcomes in adults with NAFLD.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition in which the pathological cumulation of fat with coexisting inflammation and damage of hepatic cells leads to progressive dysfunctions of the liver. Except for the commonly well-known major causes of NAFLD such as obesity, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, or diabetes, an unbalanced diet and imbalanced nutritional status should also be taken into consideration. In this narrative review, we summarized the current knowledge regarding the micro- and macronutrient status of patients suffering from NAFLD considering various diets and supplementation of chosen supplements. We aimed to summarize the knowledge indicating which nutritional impairments may be associated with the onset and progression of NAFLD at the same time evaluating the potential therapy targets that could facilitate the healing process. Except for the above-mentioned objectives, one of the most important aspects of this review was to highlight the possible strategies for taking care of NAFLD patients taking into account the challenges and opportunities associated with the micronutrient status of the patients. The current research indicates that a supplementation of chosen vitamins (e.g., vitamin A, B complex, C, or D) as well as chosen elements such as zinc may alleviate the symptoms of NAFLD. However, there is still a lack of sufficient data regarding healthy ranges of dosages; thus, further research is of high importance in this matter.

Abstract
Inflammation is an initiating cause of infectious and non-infectious diseases. Studies have shown that selenium (Se) has anti-inflammatory effects. However, its' effects on serum c-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) plasma concentrations are equivocal. Therefore, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), evaluating the effects of per oral (PO) and intravenous (IV) Se supplementation on CRP, TNF-α, and IL-6. A systematic search was conducted using four databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, and Scopus to find randomized clinical trials, published up to April 2023. From 19476 papers, after screening and removing duplicate articles, 24 studies were analyzed in the present meta-analysis. In the pooled analysis, PO Se administration showed no significant effect on CRP (WMD: 0.12; 95 % CI -0.11, 0.38; P-value= 0.30). However, IV Se supplementation had a significant negative association with CRP concentration (-2.24; 95 % CI: -4.24, -0.24; p-value: 0.02). Se administration had no significant association with TNF-α plasma concentration (9.64, 95 % CI: -0.59, 19.88, p-value= 0.06; and heterogeneity: 98 %). However, a significant positive association was present between Se and plasma TNF-α concentrations (0.15, 95 % CI: 0.14, 0.17, P-value<0.0001). Moreover, Se supplementation had a significant negative correlation with IL-6 plasma concentration in PO (-0.54; 95 % CI: -1.61, 0.52; P-value = 0.31) and IV administrations (-4.77; 95 % CI: -7.61, -1.93; P-value<0.0001), respectively. This study demonstrated that IV Se administration reduced CRP and IL-6 plasma concentrations. Conversely, IV Se supplementation increased TNF-α plasma concentration. It is evident that further, well-controlled clinical trials are required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The trajectory of blood pressure (BP) from childhood to early middle age suggested that individuals with elevated BP in early childhood were more likely to be affected by cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Exposure to metals may affect BP in children, and pregnancy is a sensitive time for metal exposure. This study assessed the relationship between different stages of prenatal exposure to metals or metal mixtures and BP in children aged 5-6 years. METHODS The study included 2535, 2680, 2534 mother-child pairs in three trimesters, from the Ma'anshan birth cohort study (MABC). We collected maternal blood samples during pregnancy and measured the serum levels of four metals (arsenic, selenium, cadmium, and mercury). BP was measured in children aged 5-6 years. A linear regression model and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were used to explore associations between prenatal exposure to metals at different stages and multiple metal exposure with BP in children aged 5-6 years. RESULTS Associations were observed between the arsenic in the third trimester and children's diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (β = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.44, 1.33), systolic blood pressure (SBP) (β = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.19, 1.24) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) (β = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.42, 1.23), as well as between the mercury and children's DBP (β = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.13, 1.16) and MAP (β = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.14, 1.07). The BKMR analysis showed that multiple metals had a significant positive joint effect on children's DBP, SBP and MAP. A potential interaction between arsenic and mercury was observed (β = -0.85, 95% CI: -1.62, -0.08). CONCLUSIONS Exposure to arsenic and mercury during pregnancy was associated with altered BP in children. The third trimester may represent an important window of opportunity to reduce the effects of metal exposure on children's blood pressure and long-term health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element that is involved in several pathophysiological functions. The relationship of Se with cardiovascular disease remains inconclusive, especially regarding the role of different selenospecies. OBJECTIVE The present study assessed the levels of Se distribution in plasma selenoproteins, namely glutathione peroxidase 3 (GPx3), selenoprotein P (SelP) and selenoalbumin (SeAlb) and total Se in selenoproteins in relation to 10-year cardiovascular risk in the ATTICA prospective study. METHODS A sub-sample from the ATTICA Study's database, consisting of 278 subjects (114 women and 164 men) with data on Se and selenoproteins levels, was considered. SeGPx3, SelP, and SeAlb in human plasma were simultaneously determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) at baseline. The duration of the follow-up was 8.74 ±2.36 years (mean± standard deviation) and cardiovascular outcomes were recorded. Cox proportional hazards models were applied with total Se or selenoprotein Se as independent variables adjusted for several covariates. RESULTS Total Se in selenoproteins was positively related to 10-year relative risk of cardiovascular disease (Hazard Ratios of 3rd vs 2nd tertile 10.02, 95% CI:1.15, 92.34). Subjects with high Se but low SeGPx3, as identified by discordant percentiles in the distribution of SeGPx3 and Se, had a higher cardiovascular risk. CONCLUSION The differentiated effects of circulating selenoproteins on cardiovascular disease risk in the present study, suggest the importance of redox regulation by specific selenoproteins.

Abstract
Five undescribed dihydroflavonoid glycoside derivatives, namely albvisosides A‒E, together with two known compounds were isolated from the roots and stem leaves of Viscum album L. var. album. (European mistletoe). Their structures were determined by HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR, and ECD analysis. Albvisoside B exhibits significant inhibitory effect on hepatic lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells at very low concentrations (EC50: 0.7 nM). Using proteome integral solubility alteration assay, the direct targets or downstream effectors of albvisoside B were elucidated. As a result, 97 proteins were identified based on ligand-induced alterations in the protein thermal stability. Bioinformatics analysis indicated that albvisoside B primarily ameliorated oleic acid-induced lipid accumulation by regulating the selenoamino acids metabolism signaling pathway. RPL3, ADAM17, and RPL14 were likely to be involved in mediating the lipid-lowering effect of albvisoside B.

Abstract
Background: Selenium is an essential trace mineral with potential interest for cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention owing to its antioxidant properties. Epidemiological data on selenium status and CVD remain inconsistent. The objective of this study was to ascertain whether low serum selenium (SSe) concentrations are related to an increased risk of a first CVD event in a population at high cardiovascular risk. Methods: We undertook a case-control study nested within the “PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea” (PREDIMED) trial. A total of 207 participants diagnosed with CVD (myocardial infarction, stroke, or cardiovascular death) during the follow-up period (2003−2010) were matched by sex, age, and intervention group to 436 controls by incidence density sampling. Median time between serum sample collection and subsequent CVD event occurrence was 0.94 years. SSe levels were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis. Covariates were assessed through validated questionnaires, in-person interviews, and medical record reviews. Conditional logistic regression was used to calculate multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (ORs). Results: Among women, the mean SSe concentration was lower in cases than in controls (98.5 μg/L vs. 103.8 μg/L; p = 0.016). In controls, SSe levels were directly associated with percentage of total energy intake from proteins and fish intake (p for linear trend < 0.001 and 0.049, respectively), whereas SSe concentrations were inversely associated with age, body mass index, and percentage of total energy intake from carbohydrates (p for linear trend < 0.001, 0.008 and 0.016 respectively). In the total group, we observed an inverse dose−response gradient between SSe levels and risk of CVD in the fully-adjusted model (highest vs. lowest quartile: OR = 0.47, 95% CI: 0.27−0.81; ptrend = 0.003). Conclusions: Among elderly individuals at high cardiovascular risk, high SSe concentrations within population reference values are associated with lower first CVD incidence.

Abstract
Few nationwide investigations on hair selenium (Se) and Keshan disease (KD) have been conducted. KD is closely associated with Se deficiency. Hair Se is an important biomarker for selenium nutrition. This research aimed to provide evidence for assessment of KD prevention, control, and elimination at the molecular level from the etiological perspective of selenium nutrition. The hair Se of the residents living in the KD endemic and non-endemic areas were determined through atomic fluorescence spectrometer. The median of the hair Se levels of the inhabitants living in KD endemic counties was significantly lower than that in KD non-endemic counties (0.34 vs 0.39 mg/kg, U = -10.03, P < 0.0001). The proportion of Se-deficient or Se-marginal residents in KD endemic counties was significantly higher than that in KD non-endemic counties (56.9% vs 36.6%, U = -9.57, P < 0.0001). The medians of the hair Se levels in KD endemic provinces of Shannxi, Heilongjiang, and Gansu were the lowest (0.35mg/kg), and in the category of Se-marginal status. The hair Se level featured a positive Spearman correlation with per capita disposable income (rs = 0.20, P < 0.0001). In conclusion, the median of the hair Se contents of residents living in KD endemic counties was significantly lower than that in KD non-endemic counties. The hair Se contents of nearly 57% of inhabitants living in KD endemic regions were in Se-deficient or Se-marginal status. The KD endemic provinces of Shannxi, Heilongjiang, and Gansu should be given high priority in KD prevention and control.

Distribution and Bioaccumulation of Essential and Toxic Metals in Tissues of Thaila (Catla catla) from a Natural Lake, Pakistan and Its Possible Health Impact on Consumers. Abstract
Although fish are often recommended as a component of a healthy diet, the environmental accumulation of heavy metals in many fish species has been of considerable concern for those weighing the nutritional health benefits against adverse toxic outcome of excess intake of toxic metals. This study aimed to determine the concentration of essential and toxic metals in the tissues of Catla catla in Mangla Lake and to assess the possible risk to the consumers. Fifty samples of Catla catla were collected from Mangla Lake, Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan and analyzed for eighteen metals including essential and trace metals. The measured range concentrations (µg/g, wet weight) in muscle tissues, in decreasing order, were: K (955–1632), Ca (550–2081), Na (449–896), Mg (129–312), Zn (61.2–215), Fe (11.6–26.8), Sr (2.60–9.27), Pb (1.72–7.81), Se (1.55–3.55), Co (0.12–4.08), Mn (1.04–4.33), Ni (0.69–3.06), Cu (0.88–2.78), Cr (0.45–1.88), As (0.67–1.58), Cd (0.28–0.56), Hg (0.17–0.57) and Li (0.12–0.38). The metal concentrations found in this study were comparatively higher than those reported in literature. A majority of the metals exhibited higher accumulation in gills compared with those in scales and muscles. Mean levels of Pb, As, Co, Mn, Cd, Cr and Zn in Catla catla muscle were found to be exceeding the international permissible limits for the safe human consumption. The condition factor (K), as an indicator of fish health status, indicated that Catla catla of Mangla Lake are in good health condition. The metal pollution index (MPI) of gills (27.9), scales (12.5) and muscle (7.57) indicated low contamination. Moreover, human health risk was evaluated using estimated weekly intake (EWI) and daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI) and target cancer risk (TCR). Estimated weekly and daily intake values for As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni and Pb were higher than provisional permissible tolerable weekly intake and permissible tolerable daily intake while THQ for As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Se and Zn was higher than 1. The THQ for As, Hg and Pb was several folds higher than 1, indicative of lifetime non-carcinogenic health risks to the consumers. The hazard index indicated cumulative risk, which greatly increased with increasing fish consumption. Target cancer risk indicated that the people eating the Catla catla from Mangla Lake were exposed to As, Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb with a significant lifetime carcinogenic risk. In summary, consumption of Catla catla from this lake was found to be associated with an increased lifetime risk to the general health of the consumers.

Abstract
Selenium (Se), in the form of selenoproteins, is an essential micronutrient that plays an important role in human health and disease. To date, there are at least 25 selenoproteins in humans involved in a wide variety of biological functions, including mammalian development, metabolic progress, inflammation response, chemoprotective properties, and most notably, oxidoreductase functions. In recent years, numerous studies have reported that low Se levels are associated with increased risk, poor outcome, and mortality of metabolic disorders, mainly related to the limited antioxidant defense resulting from Se deficiency. Moreover, the correlation between Se deficiency and Keshan disease has received considerable attention. Therefore, Se supplementation as a therapeutic strategy for preventing the occurrence, delaying the progression, and alleviating the outcomes of some diseases has been widely studied. However, supranutritional levels of serum Se may have adverse effects, including Se poisoning. This review evaluates the correlation between Se status and human health, with particular emphasis on the antioxidant benefits of Se in metabolic disorders, shedding light on clinical treatment.

Abstract
Background: Previous observational studies have shown that circulating selenium levels are inversely associated with ischemic stroke (IS). Our aims were to evaluate the causal links between selenium levels and IS, and its subtypes by Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.Methods: We used the two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) method to determine whether the circulating selenium levels are causally associated with the risk of stroke. We extracted the genetic variants (SNPs) associated with blood and toenail selenium levels from a large genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis. Inverse variance-weighted (IVW) method was used as the determinant of the causal effects of exposures on outcomes.Results: A total of 4 SNPs (rs921943, rs6859667, rs6586282, and rs1789953) significantly associated with selenium levels were obtained. The results indicated no causal effects of selenium levels on ischemic stroke by MR analysis (OR = 0.968, 95% CI 0.914–1.026, p = 0.269). Meanwhile, there was no evidence of a causal link between circulating selenium levels and subtypes of IS.Conclusion: The MR study indicated no evidence to support the causal links between genetically predicted selenium levels and IS. Our results also did not support the use of selenium supplementation for IS prevention at the genetic level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Selenium (Se) is a vital trace element playing its biological functions through selenoprotein, which has been implicated in various physiological and pathological processes. A growing number of studies indicate that low Se increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). This meta-analysis aimed to compare and analyze differences in Se levels between patients with heart failure (HF), myocardial infarction (MI), coronary heart disease (CHD), and healthy people. This will provide ideas with the potential to improve clinical intervention and prevention of CVDs. METHODS The PubMed, Embase, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Chinese Biomedical databases were systematically searched for relevant publications until November 20, 2020. The following combination keywords were used: "(heart failure disease OR myocardial infarction OR coronary heart disease) AND (selenium OR Se)". The identified studies were screened against inclusion and exclusion criteria and extracted data were analyzed using RevMan5.3 and State 16.0 software. RESULTS A total of 49 eligible studies (including 61 cohorts) were obtained. Results of the meta-analysis showed that there was a significant difference in Se levels between HF, MI, CHD patients and healthy people. The standard mean difference (SMD) level of Se in HF patients [SMD = -0.98, 95 % CI (-1.34, -0.62)], MI patients [MI: SMD = -3.46, 95 % CI (-4.43, -2.85)], and CHD patients [CHD: SMD = -0.47, 95 % CI (-0.64, -0.28)] were all significantly lower compared to healthy controls. Analysis of the correlation between Se level and publication year showed that SMD of Se levels in HF and controls was positively correlated with time. Se level was found to be a good diagnostic marker of MI (AUC = 0.7107, P = 0.0167, Sensitivity = 77.27 %, Specificity = 72.73 %). CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis shows that Se levels in patients with HF, MI, and CHD are generally lower compared with healthy controls. However, due to the small number of included studies, further studies are needed to confirm the present results.

Abstract
Currently, ketosis has no fully satisfactory resolution in dairy cows. Here, we investigated the effect of levocarnitine or vitamin B complex and E with selenium on clinically ketotic cows (β-hydroxybutyrate ≥ 3.0 mmol/L and decreased milk yield), fed glycerin. In total, 18 cases of Holstein cows with clinical ketosis during the postpartum transition period were randomly assigned to three treatments (6 cases per group): (1) levocarnitine (C+G), (2) vitamin B complex and E with selenium (VBES+G), and (3) levocarnitine and vitamin B complex and E with selenium (C+VBES+G). All groups were administered glycerin. Treatments were administered daily for 4 days. Blood sampling was performed on the onset day of ketosis (day 0), day 4, and day 6. β-Hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), milk yield (MY), and serum biochemical values were measured. Half of the animals in C+G failed to overcome clinical ketosis. VBES+G treatment ameliorated BHBA (p < 0.05), MY, and glucose on day 4. However, ketosis was exacerbated following the discontinuation of the treatment. C+VBES+G treatment improved BHBA, glucose (p < 0.05), and MY and reduced ketotic cases on days 4 and 6 with greater improvements compared to the others. In conclusion, combined treatment with levocarnitine, vitamin B complex and E with selenium, and glycerin may have the therapeutic effect on clinical ketosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Selenium is an essential trace element that shows beneficial or adverse health effects depending on the dose. Laboratory studies suggest that high selenium may contribute to the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, human evidence is limited. We evaluated the associations of serum selenium level with serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity and suspected NAFLD prevalence in U.S. adults. METHODS We conducted the cross-sectional analysis in 3827 adults aged 20 years and older without viral hepatitis, hemochromatosis, or alcoholic liver disease who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2012, 2013-2014, and 2015-2016. Serum selenium was measured using inductively coupled plasma dynamic reaction cell mass spectrometry. Suspected NAFLD cases were defined in the presence of serum ALT >30 international units (IU)/L in men and >19 I.U./L in women in the absence of other identifiable causes of liver disease. RESULTS The median (interquartile range) of serum selenium level was 127.9 (117.9, 139.4) μg/L. Non-linear associations of serum selenium with NAFLD prevalence and serum ALT activity were observed in the generalized additive models with penalized splines. After adjustment for sociodemographic variables, lifestyle factors, body mass index, and NHANES survey cycles, positive associations were found at > ~130 μg/L serum selenium with both NAFLD and ALT, whereas the associations were flattened at < ~130 μg/L. CONCLUSIONS Our findings provide evidence of non-linear associations of serum selenium with ALT activity and NAFLD prevalence. In particular, positive associations were found above serum selenium level of 130 μg/L, whereas no association was observed below this value. This finding requires confirmation in future prospective cohort studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To date, there is no clearly defined association between plasma selenium levels and first stroke. We aimed to investigate the association between baseline plasma selenium and first stroke risk in a community-based Chinese population. METHODS Using a nested case-control study design, a total of 1255 first stroke cases and 1255 matched controls were analyzed. Participant plasma selenium concentrations were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and the association of plasma selenium with first stroke risk was estimated by conditional logistic regression models. RESULTS Overall, a non-linear negative association between plasma selenium and first total stroke and first ischemic stroke risks was found in males but not in females. Compared with participants with lower selenium levels (tertile 1-2, < 94.1 ng/mL), participants with higher selenium levels (tertile 3, ≥ 94.1 ng/mL) had significantly lower risks of first total stroke (OR 0.63; 95% CI 0.48, 0.83) and first ischemic stroke (OR 0.61; 95% CI 0.45, 0.83) in males but not in females with first total stroke (OR 0.92; 95% CI 0.69, 1.22) and first ischemic stroke (OR 0.89; 95% CI 0.65, 1.22). Furthermore, a stronger association between plasma selenium and first total stroke was found in males with higher vitamin E levels (≥ 13.5 μg/mL vs. < 13.5 μg/mL P-interaction = 0.007). No significant association was observed between plasma selenium and first hemorrhagic stroke risk in either males or females. CONCLUSION Our study indicated a significant, non-linear, negative association between plasma selenium and first stroke in males but not in females. TRIAL REGISTRATION ChiCTR1800017274 .

Abstract
Hypercholesterolemia, one of the major risk factors of cardiovascular diseases, is a worldwide public health problem. Nutraceuticals and phytochemicals are attracting attention as a result of their cholesterol-lowering ability and minimal side effects. Among them, selenium (Se) is on the list. The amount of Se in foods varies by region. Se-enriched fertilizers and feeds can raise the Se content in plants and animals, while some processing methods decrease food Se content. This review summarizes recent studies on (1) the content distribution of Se in foods and factors influencing Se-enriched foods, (2) the bioavailability and metabolism of Se, and (3) the role of Se in affecting blood cholesterol and cholesterol metabolism. Although the hypocholesterolemic effect of Se is equivocal, its cholesterol-lowering activity may be more remarkable when the Se supplementation is 200 μg/day or the baseline blood total cholesterol is above 200 mg/dL in humans with low Se status.

Abstract
Selenium is an important micronutrient that is essential for the functioning of the human body. Being a component of the active center of several antioxidant enzymes selenium prevents cell injury by free radicals. Decline in selenium-containing enzymes results in progression of oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, which are considered as possible causes for the development of many cardiovascular diseases. This review focuses on mechanisms for prevention of myocardial and vascular injury through the adequate selenium supply to the body. The importance of monitoring and correction of the selenium status in appropriate patients is underlined.

Carbon Source Competition in Biological Selenate Reduction under Other Oxyanions Contamination. Processes (Basel) 2020. Abstract
Selenate removal in drinking water is being vigorously debated due to the various health issues concerned. As a viable treatment option, this study investigated a fixed-bed biofilm reactor (FBBR) with internal recycling. The experimental design tested how hydraulic loading rate and electron donor affect selenate reduction together with other oxyanions. The tested accompanying oxyanions were nitrate and perchlorate and experiments were designed to test how an FBBR responded to the limited electron donor condition. The results showed that the reactor achieved almost complete selenate reduction with the initial hydraulic loading rate of 12 m3/m2/day (influent concentration of 1416 µg SeO42−/L). Increasing the hydraulic loading rates to 16.24 and 48 m3/m2/day led to a gradual decline in selenate removal efficiency. A sufficient external carbon source (C:N of 3.3:1) achieved an almost complete reduction of nitrate as well as selenate. The FBBR acclimated to selenate instantaneously and reduced nitrate via synergistic denitrification. An experiment with another oxyanion addition, perchlorate (459 µg ClO4−/L), revealed that perchlorate-reducing bacteria were more strongly associated with carbon limitation than selenate-reducing bacteria, which can help us to understand parallel reactions in FBBRs. This research provides a framework to further study the use of electron donor-controlled FBBRs for simultaneous reduction of selenate and other oxyanions threatening the drinking water-related environment and public health.

Abstract
Background Observational studies have suggested that selenium (Se) may have beneficial effects against certain cardiovascular outcomes, with a possible U‐shaped association. We assessed the hypothesis that blood Se concentration might be inversely associated with the prevalence of stroke and the relationship would be nonlinear. Methods and Results Data collected from adult participants (aged ≥20 years) in the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS 2007–2011, n=7065) and the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 2011–2012, n=5030) were analyzed. A total of 82 (1.16%) and 202 (4.02%) stroke cases were identified in CHMS and NHANES. Respondents with stroke had lower Se levels than those without stroke, with a mean difference of 16 μg/L and 12 μg/L for CHMS and NHANES, respectively. Respondents with high blood Se concentration (tertile 3) had a lower prevalence of stroke compared with those with low Se concentration (tertile 1). The adjusted odds ratios were 0.38 (95% CI: 0.15, 0.92) and 0.57 (95% CI: 0.31, 1.03) for CHMS and NHANES, respectively. A continuous decreasing trend of stroke with whole blood selenium was observed in CHMS, whereas the curve plateaued starting at 190 μg/L for NHANES, based on the cubic restricted spline regression. Sensitivity analysis using the serum and urinary Se concentrations demonstrates that our results were consistent across different selenium biomarkers. Conclusions We observed inverse cross‐sectional associations between whole blood Se and the prevalence of stroke in representative samples of the Canadian and the US population.

Abstract
Selenate removal from a water body is being vigorously debated owing to severe health impact, but inhibitions of coexisting anions have been reported. To suggest a viable treatment option, this study investigates the effect of nitrate and perchlorate on selenate reduction in a laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor. The experimental design tests how competing electron acceptors (NO3− and ClO4−) and electron donor (acetate) limitations affect selenate reduction in the reactor. Results show that the reactor achieves almost complete selenate reduction within the initial concentration ranges of 0.1–1 mM by enriching selenate-reducing bacteria with appropriate temperature (30 °C) and acclimation period (50 days). We monitored simultaneous selenate and nitrate reduction in the reactor without specific inhibition due to a difference in microbial growth strategy related to electron donor status. Lack of perchlorate-reducing bacteria makes perchlorate addition (0.2 mM) not to be closely associated with dissimilative perchlorate reduction. These results provide information that can help us to understand the effect of competing electron acceptors on selenate reduction and the kinetics of potential parallel reactions in the reactor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Selenium (Se) is a trace element active in selenoproteins, which can regulate oxidative stress. It is generally perceived as an import factor for maintaining health in the elderly. METHODS The goal of this review is to discuss selenium concentration in biological samples, primarily serum or plasma, as a function of age and its relation with longevity. The elemental level in various age-related diseases is reviewed. CONCLUSION Highest selenium values were observed in healthy adults, while in an elderly population significantly lower concentrations were reported. Variables responsible for contradictory findings are mentioned. Risk and benefits of Se-supplementation still remain under debate.

Abstract
Conflicting data link nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a disease with no currently approved treatment, with selenium (Se) and selenoprotein P (SELENOP), a glycoprotein synthesized and primarily secreted by the hepatocytes, functioning as a Se transporter from the liver to other tissues. This review aims to summarize the evidence between Se, SELENOP, and NAFLD, which may hopefully clarify whether current data on Se and SELENOP in NAFLD warrant further investigation for their diagnostic and therapeutic potential. Most, albeit not all, experimental data show a favorable effect of Se on hepatic steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis. It seems that Se may exert an antioxidant effect on the liver, at least partly via increasing the activity of glutathione peroxidase, whose depletion contributes to the pathogenesis of hepatic inflammation and fibrosis. Se may also affect metalloproteinases, cytokines, and growth factors participating in the pathogenesis of NAFLD and, most importantly, may induce the apoptosis of hepatic stellate cells, the key players in hepatic fibrosis. However, the association between Se or SELENOP and insulin resistance, which is a principal pathogenetic factor of NAFLD, remains inconclusive. Clinical studies on Se or SELENOP in NAFLD are conflicting, apart from those in advanced liver disease (cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma), in which lower circulating Se and SELENOP are constant findings. Existing data warrant further mechanistic studies in valid animal models of human NAFLD. Prospective cohort studies and possibly randomized controlled trials are also needed to elucidate the diagnostic and therapeutic potential of Se supplementation in selected NAFLD individuals with Se deficiency.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Thyroid eye disease (TED) is the most frequent extra-thyroid manifestation of Graves' disease and it is more frequent in middle age and in female gender. Nowadays, the causal mechanisms of this disease are not completely understood, but the current available studies suggest that the main causative factor is the thyroid stimulating hormone receptor. MATERIALS AND METHODS To collect reports on TED medical management, a thorough literature search was performed in PubMed database. An additional search was made in Google Scholar to complete the collected items. RESULTS Among the indentified risk factors, tobacco habit is the most relevant. The main criteria to choose a suitable treatment are the activity and severity of the disease. Support measures can be used to improve the patient's symptoms in any phase of the disease. There is a large number of drugs proposed to manage TED, although with different reported rates of success. CONCLUSIONS Currently, the drugs of choice are corticosteroids in moderate-to-severe and in sight-threatening forms. The main problem of corticosteroids is their spectrum of side effects. Therefore, other alternatives are being suggested for medical management of this disease. The efficacy of these alternatives remains unclear.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The association between plasma selenium and new-onset diabetes in hypertensive adults is still unclear. We aimed to evaluate the relationship of baseline plasma selenium with new-onset diabetes and examine possible effect modifiers in a post-hoc analysis of the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial (CSPPT). METHODS A total of 2367 hypertensive, non-diabetic patients with plasma selenium measurements at baseline were included. The primary outcome was new-onset diabetes, defined as physician-diagnosed diabetes or use of glucose-lowering drugs during the follow-up period, or fasting glucose (FG) ≥126.0 mg/dL at the exit visit. RESULTS At baseline, higher FG levels were found among participants with plasma selenium in quartile 4 (≥94.8 μg/L) (β, 1.64 mg/dL; 95%CI: 0.54, 2.73) compared to those in quartiles 1-3. During a median follow-up duration of 4.5 years, new-onset diabetes occurred in 270 (11.4%) participants. Graphic plot showed a positive association between baseline selenium levels and risk of new-onset diabetes. This was further confirmed by adjusted regression analyses; the odds ratios (OR) for new-onset diabetes comparing quartile 4 (≥94.8 μg/L) to quartiles 1-3 was 1.36 (95%CI: 1.01, 1.83). No clear trend was evident across quartiles 1-3. CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest that high plasma selenium (≥94.8 μg/L) was associated with increased risk of new-onset diabetes in hypertensive patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE The association between selenium supplementation and glycemic indices seems to be a controversial issue. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of selenium supplementation on glycemic indices. METHODS We systematically searched PubMed/MEDLINE, ISI/WOS, and Scopus (from their commencements up to Jan 2016) for relevant studies examining the association between intake of selenium and glycemic indices. The data were extracted from relevant qualified studies and estimated using the random-effect or pooled model and standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS Twelve articles published between 2004 and 2016 were included. In all the studies, the participants were randomly assigned to an intervention group (n = 757) or a control group(n = 684). All the studies were double blind, placebo controlled trials. Selenium supplementation resulted in a significant decrease in homeostasis model of assessment-estimated β-cell function (HOMA-B) (SMD: -0.63; 95%CI: -0.89 to -0.38) and a significant increase in quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI) (SMD: by 0.74; 95%CI: 0.49 to 0.1) as compared with the controls. There were no statistically significant improvements in glycemic indices, such as fasting plasma glucose (FPG), insulin, homeostasis model of assessment-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and adiponectin. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis indicated that selenium supplementation significantly decreased HOMA-B and increased QUICKI score. There was no statistically significant improvement in FPG, insulin, HOMA-IR, HbA1c and adiponectin indices following selenium supplementation.

Abstract
In the title com-pound, C30H20Cl2O2Se, the C-Se-C angle is 99.0 (2)°, with the dihedral angle between the planes of the attached benzene rings being 79.1 (3)°. The average endocyclic angles (Se-C-C) facing the Se atom are 122.1 (5) and 122.2 (5)°. The Se atom is essentially coplanar with the attached benzene rings, deviating by 0.075 (1) and 0.091 (1) Å. In the two phenyl-ene(4-chloro-phen-yl)prop-2-en-1-one units, the benzene rings are inclined to each other by 44.6 (3) and 7.8 (3)°. In the crystal, the mol-ecules stack up the a axis, forming layers parallel to the ac plane. There are no significant classical inter-molecular inter-actions present. Hirshfeld surface analysis, two-dimensional fingerprint plots and the mol-ecular electrostatic potential surface were used to analyse the crystal packing. The Hirshfeld surface analysis suggests that the most significant contributions to the crystal packing are by C⋯H/H⋯C contacts (17.7%).

Abstract
Selenoprotein-P (SELENOP) is the main carrier of selenium to target organs and reduces tissue oxidative stress both directly and by delivering selenium to protective selenoproteins. We tested if the plasma concentration of SELENOP predicts cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in the primary preventive setting. SELENOP was measured from the baseline exam in 2002–2006 of the Malmö Preventive Project, a population-based prospective cohort study, using a validated ELISA. Quintiles of SELENOP concentration were related to the risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and a first cardiovascular event in 4366 subjects during a median (interquartile range) follow-up time of 9.3 (8.3–11) years using Cox proportional Hazards Model adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors. Compared to subjects in the lowest quintile of SELENOP, the risk of all three endpoints was significantly lower in quintiles 2–5. The risk (multivariate adjusted hazard ratio, 95% CI) decreased gradually with the lowest risk in quintile 4 for all-cause mortality (0.57, 0.48–0.69) (p < 0.001), cardiovascular mortality (0.52, 0.37–0.72) (p < 0.001), and first cardiovascular event (0.56, 0.44–0.71) (p < 0.001). The lower risk of a first cardiovascular event in quintiles 2–5 as compared to quintile 1 was significant for both coronary artery disease and stroke. We conclude that the 20% with lowest SELENOP concentrations in a North European population without history of cardiovascular disease have markedly increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and preventive selenium supplementation studies stratified for these subjects are warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The biofortification of crops can counteract human diseases, including selenium (Se) and iodine (I) deficiencies in the diet. Little is known about the effects of combinations of Se and I on microgreens and seeds, or on their accumulation in these tissues. The present study aimed to evaluate Se (SeO3 2- , SeO4 2- ) and I (I- , IO3 - ) biofortification of common buckwheat microgreens and seeds with respect to the effects of the addition of Se, I and Se + I on yield and on physiological and biochemical characteristics. RESULTS In combination treatments, microgreens yield (600-800 g m-2 ) was 50-70% higher than for Se and I alone. The respiratory potential also increased by 60-120%. Fv /Fm was close to 0.8 in all samples. Se content [0.24 μg g-1 dry weight (DW)] was 50% higher for combination treatments than for Se and I alone. I content was highest for IO3 - treatment (216 μg g-1 DW) and decreased in combination treatments with Se by 50%. CONCLUSION Biofortification of buckwheat microgreens with Se and I should be performed with care because there are synergistic and antagonistic effects of these elements with respect to their accumulation. IO3 - for the biofortification of microgreens should be kept low to prevent exceeding the recommended daily intake of I. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Objective: The aim was to examine the association between dietary selenium intake and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in a large group of middle-aged and elderly Chinese persons.Method: The data included in this analysis were from a population-based study, the Xiangya Hospital Health Management Center Study. NAFLD was diagnosed by (1) imaging or histological evidence of hepatic steatosis; (2) absence of specific etiologies of NAFLD; and (3) no heavy consumption of alcohol. Dietary selenium intake was assessed using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. The association between dietary selenium intake and the prevalence of NAFLD was evaluated using logistic and spline regression in a cross-sectional study of 5436 subjects.Results: The prevalence of NAFLD was 36.8%. Compared with the lowest quintile, the energy-adjusted odds ratios for NAFLD were 1.27 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.07-1.52), 1.30 (95% CI, 1.09-1.55), and 1.58 (95% CI, 1.33-1.89) for the third, fourth, and fifth quintiles of selenium intake, respectively, and there was a positive dose-response relationship (r = 0.88, p for trend = 0.008). Similar results were observed for men and women separately. The findings were not materially altered by adjustment for potential confounders (i.e., age, gender, body mass index, smoking status, diabetes, hypertension, activity level, nutritional supplements, energy intake, fat intake, fiber intake, cholesterol and saturated fatty acid intake).Conclusions: In this middle-aged and elderly population, subjects with higher dietary selenium intake, even below the recommended nutrient intake in China, had higher prevalence of NAFLD in a dose-response relationship manner.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the effect of selenium supplementation at different dose levels on changes in HbA1c after 6 months and 2 years in a population of low selenium status. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Denmark PRECISE study was a single-centre, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, multi-arm, parallel clinical trial with four groups. In total, 491 volunteers aged 60 to 74 years were randomly assigned to treatment with 100, 200 or 300 μg selenium/day as selenium-enriched yeast or placebo-yeast. HbA1c measurements were available for 489 participants at baseline, 435 at 6 months, and 369 after 2 years of selenium supplementation. Analyses were performed by intention to treat. RESULTS The mean (SD) age, plasma-selenium concentration, and blood HbA1c at baseline were 66.1 (4.1) years, 86.5 (16.3) ng/g and 36.6 (7.0) mmol/mol, respectively. During the initial 6-month intervention period, mean HbA1c (95% CI) decreased by 1.5 (-2.8 to -0.2) mmol/mol for 100 μg/d of selenium supplementation and by 0.7 (-2.0 to 0.6) mmol/mol for the 200 and 300 μg/d groups compared with placebo (P = 0.16 for homogeneity of changes across the four groups). After 2 years of selenium supplementation, HbA1c had decreased significantly in all treatment groups, with no difference between active treatment and placebo. CONCLUSIONS Selenium supplementation in an elderly European population of low selenium status did not significantly affect HbA1c levels after 2 years. Our findings corroborate a possible U-shaped response of selenium supplementation on glucose metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiologic studies suggest toxic metals are linked with diabetes and cardiovascular disease, while experimental studies indicate nutritionally essential metals are involved in the metabolism of macronutrients and defense against oxidative stress. OBJECTIVES We sought to evaluate how essential and toxic metals are cross-sectionally related to metabolic syndrome, a clustering of cardiometabolic conditions. METHODS Using data from the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n = 1088), we characterized metal concentrations as measured in spot urine (arsenic, cadmium, and inorganic/elemental mercury), whole blood (manganese, lead, methylmercury, and selenium), and serum (copper and zinc) samples. Principal component analysis was performed to derive patterns of exposures. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the 2009 Joint Scientific Statement as the presence of ≥ 3 of the following conditions: high blood pressure, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high fasting glucose, and abdominal obesity. RESULTS After adjustment for potential confounders, prevalence ratios for metabolic syndrome comparing the highest to the lowest quartiles were 1.41 (95% CI: 1.18-1.67) for the arsenic-inorganic/elemental mercury pattern, 0.95 (0.78-1.16) for the methylmercury-manganese pattern, 0.73 (0.57-0.94) for the cadmium-lead pattern, 0.91 (0.76-1.10) for the copper pattern, and 1.36 (1.13-1.63) for the selenium-zinc pattern. The positive associations observed for the arsenic-inorganic/elemental mercury pattern were due to an elevated prevalence of high blood pressure, low HDL cholesterol, and high triglycerides among those with greater exposures. Associations for the selenium-zinc pattern were driven by a positive relationship with high triglycerides. Greater lead-cadmium co-exposures were related to a lower prevalence of dyslipidemia and abdominal obesity. CONCLUSIONS These cross-sectional findings suggest both toxic and essential metal exposures may contribute to cardiometabolic health, but need to be confirmed with prospective data.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The reason for increased cardiovascular risk in inflammatory arthritis (IA) is unclear. Interestingly, selenium-deficiency is suspected to contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the general population. Although the reference range of serum selenium (s-selenium) is 50-120 μg/L, there are indications that levels up to 85 μg/L might not be sufficient for optimal cardioprotection. Our aim was to examine s-selenium levels in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS), to evaluate the effect of anti-rheumatic treatment on s-selenium levels, and to assess relationships between s-selenium levels and clinical and laboratory parameters including markers of disease activity and CVD risk. METHODS We examined 64 patients with RA, 40 with PsA and 26 with AS starting with methotrexate (MTX) monotherapy or anti-tumor necrosis factor therapy (anti-TNF) with or without methotrexate (anti-TNF ± MTX) due to active disease. S-selenium, inflammatory biomarkers, endothelial function (EF) and other variables were examined at baseline and after 6 weeks and 6 months of treatment. RESULTS In the total IA group, s-selenium increased within 6 weeks of anti-rheumatic treatment, and thereafter the levels remained stable until the end of the 6 months follow-up period. There were no significant differences in s-selenium changes between the three diagnostic groups and between the two treatment regimens. Changes in s-selenium were negatively related to changes in C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), but there were no significant relationships to any other of the examined risk parameters for CVD including EF. CONCLUSION IA patients had s-selenium within the reference range, but below the level that might be necessary for optimal CVD protection. Anti-rheumatic treatment had a relatively rapid and sustained effect on s-selenium levels. The increase in s-selenium was related to reduction in inflammatory activity. In theory, anti-rheumatic drugs might improve s-selenium levels through inhibition of pro-inflammatory processes or through other mechanisms. Although we have not revealed any significant relationships between s-selenium and CVD risk parameters, the role of suboptimal s-selenium levels in pathogenesis of premature CVD in IA cannot be ruled out.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between selenium content in hair and the incidence of Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) and Keshan disease (KD) in China. A prospective cohort study was conducted among children aged 5-12 years with different levels of low-selenium (group 1, Se ≤ 110 ng/g; group 2, 110 < Se ≤ 150 ng/g; and group 3, 150 < Se ≤ 200 ng/g) or selenium-supplemented (group 4, Se > 200 ng/g) exposure. A person-years approach was used to calculate the incidence and rate of positive clinical signs. Relative risk (RR), attributable risk, and etiologic fraction were used to determine the strength of association between selenium and disease incidence. Seven new KBD cases were diagnosed during 3-year follow-up. Positive clinical signs of KBD were found in 17.78 (95% confidence interval [CI] 14.27-21.29) cases per 100 person-years in group 1, 13.28 (9.82-16.74) in group 2, 12.95 (9.34-16.56) in group 3, and 8.18 (5.50-10.85) in group 4. Compared with group 4, the RR (95% CI) of groups 1, 2, and 3 were 2.17 (1.48-3.19), 1.62 (1.07-2.47), and 1.58 (1.03-2.43), respectively. Positive clinical signs of KD were 25.90 (18.62-33.18) cases per 100 person-years in group 1, 5.66 (1.26-10.06) in group 2, 4.60 (0.20-9.00) in group 3, and 14.62 (8.54-20.69) in group 4. Compared with group 4, the RR (95% CI) were 1.77 (1.07-2.93), 0.39 (0.16-0.93), and 0.31 (0.11-0.89), respectively. In children, the onset of KBD was negatively correlated with selenium content within a certain range. However, there may be a U-shaped association between selenium content and KD in children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Metabolic syndrome is a multi-causal disease. Its treatment includes lifestyle changes with a focus on weight loss. This systematic review assessed the association between Selenium intake and metabolic syndrome. METHODS Data were collected mainly from four databases: PubMed, CENTRAL (Cochrane), Scopus and Web of Knowledge. Keywords related to metabolic syndrome, selenium, as well as metabolic syndrome features were searched. This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statement. A systematic review protocol was registered at PROSPERO (n. 42016046321). Two reviewers independently screened 2957 abstracts. Six studies were included to perform data extraction with standardized spreadsheets. The risk of bias was assessed by using specific tools according to the design of the relevant studies. An assessment was carried out based on the appropriateness of the study reports accordingly to STROBE and the CONSORT-based checklist for each study design. RESULTS Three studies found no association between Selenium intake and metabolic syndrome; two of them found an inverse association; and one study found a direct association between Selenium intake and metabolic syndrome. One study also showed an inverse association between Selenium intake and the prevalence of high waist circumference, high diastolic blood pressure, and hyperglycaemia in women. CONCLUSIONS Overall, based on the argumentation and results of this study, it is possible to conclude that Selenium intake and metabolic syndrome are not clearly associated in adults and elderly.

Abstract
Minerals play a major role in regulating cardiovascular function. Imbalances in electrolyte minerals are frequent and potentially hazardous occurrences that may lead to the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Transition metals, such as iron, zinc, copper and selenium, play a major role in cell metabolism. However, there is controversy over the effects of dietary and supplemental intake of these metals on cardiovascular risk factors and events. Since their pro-oxidant or antioxidant functions can have different effects on cardiovascular health. While deficiency of these trace elements can cause cardiovascular dysfunction, several studies have also shown a positive association between metal serum levels and cardiovascular risk factors and events. Thus, a J- or U-shaped relationship between the transition minerals and cardiovascular events has been proposed. Given the existing controversies, large, well-designed, long-term, randomized clinical trials are required to better examine the effects of trace mineral intake on cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality in the general population. In this review, we discuss the role of dietary and/or supplemental iron, copper, zinc, and selenium on cardiovascular health. We will also clarify their clinical applications, benefits, and harms in CVDs prevention.

Abstract
Selenoprotein P (SeP) functions as a selenium (Se)-supply protein. SeP is identified as a hepatokine, promoting insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes. Thus, the suppression of Se-supply activity of SeP might improve glucose metabolism. Here, we develop an anti-human SeP monoclonal antibody AE2 as with neutralizing activity against SeP. Administration of AE2 to mice significantly improves glucose intolerance and insulin resistance that are induced by human SeP administration. Furthermore, excess SeP administration significantly decreases pancreas insulin levels and high glucose-induced insulin secretion, which are improved by AE2 administration. Epitope mapping reveals that AE2 recognizes a region of human SeP adjacent to the first histidine-rich region (FHR). A polyclonal antibody against the mouse SeP FHR improves glucose intolerance and insulin secretion in a mouse model of diabetes. This report describes a novel molecular strategy for the development of type 2 diabetes therapeutics targeting SeP. Selenoprotein P is secreted by the liver and when present in excess it promotes development of type 2 diabetes. Here the authors develop neutralizing antibodies to target human and mouse selenoprotein P, and show that they improve insulin secretion and glucose tolerance in mouse models.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis and related cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) represent the greatest threats to human health worldwide. Selenium, an essential trace element, is incorporated into selenoproteins that play a crucial role in human health and disease. Although findings from a limited number of randomized trials have been inconsistent and cannot support a protective role of Se supplementation in CVDs, prospective observational studies have generally shown a significant inverse association between selenium or selenoprotein status and CVD risk. Furthermore, a benefit of selenium supplementation in the prevention of CVDs has been seen in population with low baseline selenium status. Evidence from animal studies shows consistent results that selenium and selenoproteins might prevent experimental atherosclerosis, which can be explained by the molecular and cellular effects of selenium observed both in animal models and cell cultures. Selenoproteins of particular relevance to atherosclerosis are glutathione peroxidases, thioredoxin reductase 1, selenoprotein P, selenoprotein S. The present review is focusing on the existing evidence that supports the concept that optimal selenium intake can prevent atherosclerosis. Its underlying mechanisms include inhibiting oxidative stress, modulating inflammation, suppressing endothelial dysfunction, and protecting vascular cells against apoptosis and calcification. However, the benefit of selenium supplementation in the prevention of atherosclerosis remains insufficiently documented so far. Future studies with regard to the effects of selenium supplementation on atherosclerosis should consider many factors, especially the baseline selenium status, the dose and forms of selenium supplementation, and the selenoprotein genotype. Additionally, much more studies are needed to confirm the roles of selenoproteins in atherosclerosis prevention and clarify the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Several studies have shown an inverse relationship between selenium status and cardiovascular health, although epidemiologic evidence yielded by the randomized trials did not find a beneficial effect of selenium administration. The aim of this study was to analyze the association between serum selenium levels and lipid profile adjusted by age, sex and other associated factors among a general adult population in Spain. MATERIALS AND METHODS We recruited 372 hospital employee volunteers (60 men and 312 women) with a mean age of 47 (SD: 10.9), whom were given a standardized questionnaire. Serum selenium concentration was measured by electrothermal atomization atomic absorption spectrometry. Serum copper and zinc concentrations were measured using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. RESULTS The mean of serum selenium was 79.5μg/L (SD: 11.7) with no sex-dependent differences. In the multivariate linear regression analysis, the associated factors with the mean levels of selenium were: age (β=0.223; CI 95%: 0.101-0.345), p<0.001; widowhood (β=-9.668; CI 95%: -17.234 to -2.102), p=0.012; calcium supplements (β=3.949; CI 95%: 0.059-7.838), p=0.047; zinc (β=0.126; CI 95%: 0.013-0.238), p=0.028 and glucose (β=0.172; CI 95%: 0.062- 0.281), p=0.002; Participants with serum selenium≥79.5μg/L were 1.98 (OR=1.98; CI 95% 1.17-3.35; p=0.011) and 2.04 times (OR=2.04; CI 95% 1.06-3.97; p=0.034) more likely to have cholesterol ≥200mg/dL and LDL-c ≥100mg/dL respectively than those with serum selenium <79.5μg/L. CONCLUSIONS Higher selenium was positively associated with increased total and LDL cholesterol but not with HDL-c and triglycerides. More studies are needed in order to confirm the lower serum selenium findings in widows.

Abstract
Introduction. Selenium is a micronutrient embedded in several proteins. In adults, the thyroid is the organ with the highest amount of selenium per gram of tissue. Selenium levels in the body depend on the characteristics of the population and its diet, geographic area, and soil composition. In the thyroid, selenium is required for the antioxidant function and for the metabolism of thyroid hormones. Methods. We performed a review of the literature on selenium's role in thyroid function using PubMed/MEDLINE. Results. Regarding thyroid pathology, selenium intake has been particularly associated with autoimmune disorders. The literature suggests that selenium supplementation of patients with autoimmune thyroiditis is associated with a reduction in antithyroperoxidase antibody levels, improved thyroid ultrasound features, and improved quality of life. Selenium supplementation in Graves' orbitopathy is associated with an improvement of quality of life and eye involvement, as well as delayed progression of ocular disorders. The organic form of selenium seems to be the preferable formulation for supplementation or treatment. Conclusion. Maintaining a physiological concentration of selenium is a prerequisite to prevent thyroid disease and preserve overall health. Supplementation with the organic form is more effective, and patients with autoimmune thyroiditis seem to have benefits in immunological mechanisms. Selenium supplementation proved to be clinically beneficial in patients with mild to moderate Graves' orbitopathy.

Abstract
Selenium exposure can induce liver insulin resistance and increased liver triglyceride concentrations in animals, which may link to an increased risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, epidemiological studies investigating the association between elevated plasma selenium levels and NAFLD were not available. We aimed to investigate the association of selenium levels with the prevalence of NAFLD in Chinese adults. This was a cross-sectional study of 8550 Chinese adults aged 40 yr or older in Shanghai, China. A questionnaire, anthropometric measurements, and laboratory tests were conducted. NAFLD was diagnosed by hepatic ultrasound after the exclusion of alcohol abuse and other liver diseases. Plasma selenium concentration was assessed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy. The median concentration of plasma selenium was 213.0 μg/L. Elevated plasma selenium levels were associated with higher triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, fasting plasma glucose, post-loading plasma glucose, A1c, HOMA-IR, as well as ALT, AST and γ-GT (all P < 0.05). The odds ratios were substantially higher for NAFLD (OR = 1.54, 95% CI 1.13–2.18) in the highest selenium quartile compared with those in the lowest quartile, after adjustment for potential cofounder. The results of this study provided epidemiological evidence that increased plasma selenium level is associated with elevated prevalence of NAFLD.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is highly abundant in marine foods traditionally consumed by Inuit of Nunavik (Northern Quebec, Canada) and accordingly, their Se intake is among the highest in the world. However, little is known regarding the biological implications of this high Se status in this Arctic indigenous population. We used a method combining affinity chromatography and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry with quantification by post-column isotope dilution to determine total Se levels and concentrations of Se-containing proteins in archived plasma samples of Inuit adults who participated to the 2004 Nunavik Inuit Health Survey (N = 852). Amounts of mercury (Hg) associated with Se-containing proteins were also quantified. Results show that glutathione peroxidase 3 (GPx3), selenoprotein P (SelP) and selenoalbumin (SeAlb) represented respectively 25%, 52% and 23% of total plasma Se concentrations. In addition, small amounts of Hg co-eluted with each Se-containing protein and up to 50% of plasma Hg was associated to SelP. Total plasma Se concentrations (median = 139 μg L− 1; interquartile range (IQR) = 22.7 μg L− 1) were markedly lower and less variable than whole blood Se concentration (median = 261 μg L− 1, IQR = 166 μg L− 1). A non linear relation was observed between whole blood Se and plasma Se levels, with plasma Se concentrations leveling off at approximately 200 μg L− 1, whereas 16% and 3% of individuals exhibited whole blood concentrations higher than 500 μg L− 1 and 1000 μg L− 1, respectively. In contrast, a linear relationship was previously reported in communities consuming Brazil nuts which are rich Se, mainly present as selenomethionine. This suggests that a different selenocompound, possibly selenoneine, is present in the Arctic marine food chain and accumulates in the blood cellular fraction of Inuit.

Selenate (SeO4(2-)) bioreduction is possible with oxidation of a range of organic or inorganic electron donors, but it never has been reported with methane gas (CH4) as the electron donor. In this study, we achieved complete SeO4(2-) bioreduction in a membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) using CH4 as the sole added electron donor. The introduction of nitrate (NO3(-)) slightly inhibited SeO4(2-) reduction, but the two oxyanions were simultaneously reduced, even when the supply rate of CH4 was limited. The main SeO4(2-)-reduction product was nanospherical Se(0), which was identified by scanning electron microscopy coupled to energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDS). Community analysis provided evidence for two mechanisms for SeO4(2-) bioreduction in the CH4-based MBfR: a single methanotrophic genus, such as Methylomonas, performed CH4 oxidation directly coupled to SeO4(2-) reduction, and a methanotroph oxidized CH4 to form organic metabolites that were electron donors for a synergistic SeO4(2-)-reducing bacterium.

Abstract
The dependent elderly are widely considered to be at higher risk of nutritional problems. Suboptimal micronutrient intake might put the elderly, especially those living in nursing homes, at high risk of morbidity. So far, no public authority, except for the Israel Ministry of Health, has issued particular recommendations for micronutrient supplementation for the elderly. We hypothesized that moderate 'multivitamin' supplementation could improve the vitamin status of the dependent elderly. The study took place in two nursing homes and included 144 dependent elderly (males/females, 35/109). Demographic and clinical data as well as routine blood tests were retrieved from the patient electronic medical records. After a two-year daily 'multivitamin' supplementation, containing 120μg of folic acid, there was a small and non-significant increase of 12% in serum folate; the same 'multivitamin' preparatory, containing 2.4μg of vitamin B12, significantly increased serum vitamin B12 by 8%. Three models of evaluation clearly showed the effect of a two- year vitamin supplementation: 1. The number of subjects with the lowest baseline concentration range, decreased, with moderate concentration, increased, with no difference at the higher concentrations; 2. Above each vitamin concentration, the number of subjects was higher than at baseline; 3. The two vitamins at the two lower concentration tertiles increased, and at the highest tertile, folate was not affected, whereas vitamin B12 decreased. Therefore, very moderate 'multivitamin' supplementation, as practiced in our study, has a high probability of improving vulnerable old population health status without causing any adverse effects to others.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) status varies worldwide as a result of natural variation of Se content in soils, dietary pattern, and the presence of SNPs. Further, Se status in Brazilians and its relationship between genetic variation and Se biomarkers is unknown. This work investigated the association between SNPs in glutathione peroxidase genes and biomarkers of Se status in healthy Brazilians. The study was conducted in 116 healthy adults in São Paulo, Brazil. Plasma and erythrocyte Se were measured by HGFAAS. Erythrocyte GPx (eGPx) activity was measured spectrometrically in a biochemical analyzer. Genotypes were determined by real-time PCR using Taqman(®) Assays. eGPx activity was higher in females compared with males. Lower erythrocyte Se concentrations were found in heterozygous GC carriers for GPX1 rs8179169. eGPx activity was higher in females with the common genotypes, except for rs8179169. GC carriers for rs8179169 had lower erythrocyte Se in both genders, and only male carriers of the variant alleles of both rs1050450 and rs1800668 had higher eGPx activity. In conclusion, the genotype for SNPs in GPX1 and gender affected biomarkers of Se status in this pilot study with healthy Brazilians.
