Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between suicide attempts and lipid profiles in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) remains uncertain. The purpose of this study was to investigate sex differences in the relationship between suicide attempts and plasma lipid profiles in a large sample of first-episode and drug naive (FEDN) MDD patients. METHODS We recruited 1718 FEDN MDD patients and gathered demographic, clinical, and blood lipid data. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale were used to assess the symptoms of patients. RESULTS There was no significant difference in the prevalence of suicide attempts between male and female MDD patients. The suicide attempt group had higher levels of depression, anxiety, psychotic symptoms, total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), but lower levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels than the non-suicide attempt group. Binary logistic regression showed that TC levels were significantly correlated with suicidal attempts in both male and female patients. Correlation analysis revealed that the levels of TC, HDL-C and LDL-C were significantly associated with the number of suicide attempts in both male and female patients. Further multiple linear regression revealed that TC levels were significantly associated with the number of suicide attempts in male patients only. CONCLUSIONS Lipid biomarkers, particularly high TC levels, are associated with suicide attempts in both male and female MDD patients. However, there is gender difference in association between lipid biomarkers, especially TC levels, and the number of suicide attempts in MDD patients.

Abstract
Rapid assessment and intervention of suicide risk are common and challenging in psychiatric emergency departments (PED). It is unclear whether distinct pathophysiological processes exist among depressive patients with suicidality. This study examined the network structures of biomarkers on Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, such as Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and Corticosterone (Cort), as well as suicidality and depressive symptoms in mood disorder patients in PED. Mood disorder patients in PED were assessed with the measurements of suicidality and depressive symptoms, respectively. A network analysis was performed to identify central symptoms and bridge symptoms of this network and their links to ACTH and Cort. Network stability was examined using the case-dropping procedure. The Network Comparison Test (NCT) was conducted to evaluate whether network characteristics differed by gender. A total of 1815 mood disorder patients were recruited. The prevalence of SI was 31.2% (95% CI: 28.15-34.21%), SP was 30.4% (95% CI: 27.39-33.41%), SA was 30.62% (95% CI: 27.61-33.64%) among psychiatric outpatients. The mean score of HAMD-24 was 13.87 ± 8.02. Network analysis revealed that 'Somatic anxiety' had the highest expected centrality, followed by 'Hopelessness' and 'Suicide attempt'. 'Corticosterone' and 'Retardation' may be the main bridge symptoms between depressive symptoms and the suicidality community. The network model showed a high degree of stability. Gender did not significantly influence the network structure. The central symptoms and key bridge symptoms identified could be potential targets for interventions of the HPA axis, which is designed for regular screening of a range of suicidal activity. In the light of this, timely treatment should be provided for psychiatric emergency care.

Exploring the role of serum lipid profile and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in violent suicide attempters: a cross sectional study. CNS Spectr 2022; 27:362-368. Abstract
BACKGROUND Suicidality is one of the most common complications of mental disorders, so that the identification of potential biomarkers may be relevant in clinical practice. To date, the role of serum lipids and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been explored albeit with conflicting results. To the best of our knowledge, no study has explored lipid levels concomitantly with NLR in relation to violent suicide attempts. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether serum lipid levels and NLR might be associated with the violent method of suicide attempts. METHODS The study group consisted of 163 inpatients who attempted suicide. Blood samples were collected at the beginning of hospitalization to measure total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein, very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), triglycerides, and NLR. Descriptive analyses of the total sample were performed. The included patients were divided into two groups according to violent/nonviolent method. Groups were compared in terms of lipid (MANCOVAs). RESULTS Plasma levels of total cholesterol (F = 5.66; P = .02), LDL (F = 4.94; P = .03), VLDL (F = 5.66; P = .02), and NLR (F = 8.17; P < .01) resulted to be significantly lower in patients that used a violent method compared to patients who attempted suicide with a nonviolent method. CONCLUSIONS Low cholesterol, LDL, and VLDL levels as well as low NLR value were associated with a violent method of suicide attempt in patients with mental disorders. Further studies are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Abnormal blood lipid levels are common in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD). Previous studies have revealed lipid-mood associations in adults with BD, but no data on this relationship is available in youth populations. This cross-sectional study examined the associations of lipid levels with mood states and symptoms in a cohort of youth with BD. METHODS Participants were youth with BD and healthy controls (HCs) between the ages of 13-20 years. We compared the levels of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and TG/HDL-C ratio between 4 participant episode groups: BD-euthymic (n = 28), BD-depressed (n = 29) BD-hypomanic/mixed (n = 31), and HCs (n = 89). We also examined for dimensional associations of lipids with mania and depression scores in the overall BD group and within BD episode subgroups. RESULTS TG levels were significantly higher in the BD-euthymic group (p = 0.008, d = 0.59) and in the BD-mixed/hypomanic group (p = 0.03, d = 0.44) compared to the HC group. TG/HDL-C ratio was also higher in the BD-euthymic group compared to the HC group (p = 0.01, d = 0.51). No dimensional associations were found between lipids and mood symptom scores in the overall BD group. However, within the BD-mixed/hypomanic subgroup, higher mania scores were associated with higher TG (β = 0.42, p = 0.04), TG/HDL-C ratio (β = 0.59, p = 0.002), and lower HDL-C (β = 0.56 p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS Youth with BD demonstrate atherogenic lipid profiles. Higher atherogenic lipids were associated with hypomanic but, contrasting adult BD studies, not depressive symptoms. Future prospective studies are warranted to evaluate the temporal association between lipids and mood among youth with BD.

Abstract
Background: Potential interactions between mood disorders and microcytic anaemias have been suggested by case reports, surveys of haematological parameters in psychiatric populations, and surveys of psychiatric morbidity in thalassaemic carriers. Objectives: a) To review published studies. b) To study the prevalence of microcytic anaemia in a sample of Sardinian outpatients with recurrent mood disorders. c) To check whether mood disorders and microcytic anaemia co-segregate within families. Methods: We extracted data on blood count and serum iron concentrations from the records of patients admitted between January 1st, 2001 and December 31st, 2016, to our clinic for mood disorders. Moreover, we studied siblings of subjects with both major mood disorders (according to Research Diagnostic Criteria) and heterozygous thalassaemia (according to Mean Corpuscular Volume, serum iron, and haemoglobin A2 concentrations). Siblings affected with a major mood disorder were examined for haematological concordance with the proband (reduced MCV and/or increased HbA2 in case of heterozygous β-thalassaemia, or presence of gene deletions in case of α-thalassaemia). Results: Microcytic anaemia was highly prevalent (81/337 = 24.0%) among outpatients with mood disorders. Starting from 30 probands with heterozygous ß-thalassaemia, concordance for reduced MCV and/or increased HbA2 was found in 78% (35/45) of affected siblings. Starting from 3 probands with heterozygous α-thalassaemia, only one of the 5 affected siblings carried four α-globin functional genes. Conclusion: Based on the review of the literature, the high prevalence of microcytic anaemia in outpatients, and the concordance between affected siblings, we can conclude that a role of heterozygous thalassaemias is highly probable. Future studies are required to establish the relevance of heterozygous thalassaemias and evaluate the magnitude of the effect, possibly using a molecular diagnosis also in the case of heterozygous β-thalassaemia.

Abstract
Suicides and suicidal behavior are major causes of mortality and morbidity in public health and are a global problem. Various authors have proposed changes in lipid metabolism (total cholesterol decrease) as a possible biological marker for suicidal behavior. The objective of this study was to review the studies that have demonstrated a relationship between serum cholesterol levels and suicidal behavior and to describe the possible pathophysiological mechanisms that associate changes in cholesterol concentration and suicidal behavior. Relevant literature related to serum cholesterol levels and suicidal behavior was identified through various database searches. The data from the existing literature present the findings that relate low cholesterol levels and possible pathophysiological mechanisms (neuroinflammation, serotonergic neurotransmission), genes related to cholesterol synthesis, pharmacological treatments that alter lipid metabolism and the possible participation in suicidal behavior. Nevertheless, future research is required to describe how serum cholesterol affects cholesterol metabolism in the CNS to establish and understand the role of cholesterol in suicidal behavior.

Abstract
Background: Schizophrenia (SCZ) is still a challenging, refractory, and severe disorder. It is not a fully understood disease with genetic and epigenetic susceptibility and about 80% substantial heritability. The CUB and Sushi multiple domains 1 (CSMD1) gene is implicated in neurogenesis, memory, immunity, neuropsychology, and monoamine metabolism. Thus, it is one of the powerful genes involved in the pathogenesis of SCZ. Purpose: To evaluate the possible role of the CSMD1 gene's mRNA expression and its serum protein as markers for the early diagnosis of the first-episode SCZ in familial high-risk (FHR) Egyptian children and young adults. Subjects and methods: This case-control study included 80 first-episode drug-naïve SCZ patients from FHR Egyptian children and young adults and 80 healthy participants, as controls, from the FHR-susceptible children and young adults but did not develop SCZ. In this study, the CSMD1 gene's mRNA expression and CSMD1 serum levels were measured in the peripheral blood, and these levels were correlated with the lipid profile of the study populations. Results: The CSMD1 gene's mRNA expression and its' protein levels were significantly decreased in the SCZ patients compared to controls. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis succeeded in distinguishing SCZ patients from those not having SCZ using cutoff points of ≤0.711 and ≤4.83 ng/mL for the CSMD1 gene's mRNA expression and serum protein level, respectively. At these levels, the diagnostic sensitivities were 93.75 and 91.25%; specificity was 92.5%; positive predictive value (PPV) were 92.6 and 92.4%; and negative predictive values (NPVs) were 93.7 and 91.4%, respectively. Also, the ROC curve analysis succeeded in discriminating those with suicidal tendencies. Conclusion: CSMD1 gene's mRNA expression might be a reliable and early diagnostic predictor of first-episode SCZ in the FHR Egyptian children and young adults.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Previous observational cohort studies showed an association between low serum lipid levels and suicide. This study was undertaken to examine the relationship between lipid parameters and impulsivity in suicidal patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS The current study included 100 patients with MDD distributed as 50 patients with recent suicidal attempts and 50 patients with no lifetime history of suicide. Participants were subjected to Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID I) to confirm the diagnosis. The risk of suicide was assessed through the Suicide Probability Scale (SPS), while the intent and seriousness of suicide were assessed through Beck's Suicidal Intent Scale. assessment of impulsivity was carried out through Barratt Impulsivity Scale. Serum lipid levels were measured in mg/dL after an overnight fast. RESULTS Total cholesterol (TC) was found significantly lower in the suicidal group compared to the non-suicidal depressed group (p = 0.040). Low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) level was significantly correlated with suicidality and high suicide intent was correlated with hopelessness. Logistic regression for lipid profile in both groups revealed significant TC and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) as predictors for suicide. There was no significant correlation between impulsivity and characteristics of depression, suicide probability, suicide intent, and all elements of the lipid profile. CONCLUSIONS Low TC and LDL could predict suicidal behavior in patients with MDD. Impulsivity could not be a mediator or predictor of suicide risk in patients with MDD.

Abstract
Increasing evidence suggests that serum lipids are associated with depressive symptoms. However, previous studies have mostly employed a cross-sectional design and assessed middle-aged or older adult populations, making it difficult to discern the impact of lipid changes early in life on the development of depression. Accordingly, we sought to investigate changes in blood cholesterol levels during adolescence and the development of depressive symptoms in early adulthood. This prospective cohort study included participants aged 15-16 years from the JS High School Study (JSHS), with an average follow-up of 6 years. Participants had no diagnosed depression at baseline. Multivariable linear regression models were used to estimate associations between changes in total cholesterol during adolescence and depressive symptoms in adulthood. Changes in total cholesterol during adolescence were classified as "consistently low," "decreased," "moderate," "increased," or "consistently high". In men, depressive symptoms were higher in the consistently low (β = 3.20, p = 0.036) and increased total cholesterol groups (β = 3.48, p = 0.017), compared with the moderate group. In the consistently high group, although a positive linear association was observed, it lacked statistical significance (β = 2.71, p = 0.067). While similar tendencies were noted in women, the associations were not statistically significant. Consistently low or increased total cholesterol levels during adolescence may pose an increased risk of depressive symptoms in early adulthood. These findings suggest that different strategies should be adopted to manage the lipid risk factors with consideration of age and sex.

Abstract
Background: Agitation is a prevalent and difficult-to-treat symptom of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The endocannabinoid system (ECS) has been a target of interest for the treatment of agitation. However, ECS signaling may interact with AD-related changes in brain cholesterol metabolism. Elevated brain cholesterol, reflected by reduced serum 24-S-hydroxycholesterol (24S-OHC), is associated with reduced membrane fluidity, preventing ligand binding to cannabinoid receptor 1. Objective: To assess whether 24S-OHC was associated with agitation severity and response to nabilone. Methods: 24S-OHC was collected from AD patients enrolled in a clinical trial on nabilone at the start and end of each phase. This allowed for the cross-sectional and longitudinal investigation between 24S-OHC and agitation (Cohen Mansfield Agitation Inventory, CMAI). Post-hoc analyses included adjustments for baseline standardized Mini-Mental Status Exam (sMMSE), and analyses with CMAI subtotals consistent with the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) definition for agitation (physical aggression and nonaggression, and verbal aggression). Results: 24S-OHC was not associated with CMAI scores cross-sectionally or longitudinally, before and after adjusting for baseline sMMSE. However, 24S-OHC was associated with greater CMAI IPA scores at baseline (F(1,36) = 4.95, p = 0.03). In the placebo phase only, lower 24S-OHC at baseline was associated with increases in CMAI IPA scores (b = –35.2, 95% CI –65.6 to –5.0, p = 0.02), and decreases in 24S-OHC were associated with increases in CMAI IPA scores (b = –20.94, 95% CI –57.9 to –4.01, p = 0.03). Conclusion: 24S-OHC was associated with agitation severity cross-sectionally, and longitudinally in patients with AD. However, 24S-OHC did not predict treatment response, and does not change over time with nabilone.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the lifetime suicide attempt rate, clinical characteristics and cognitive function of Chinese patients with chronic schizophrenia who had attempted suicide. METHODS We collected data from 908 schizophrenia inpatients about suicide attempts through interviews with the patients and their families, as well as through medical records. All patients were assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, the Rating Scale for Extrapyramidal Side Effects, the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale, and the Repeated Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status. RESULTS Of this sample, 97 (10.68%) had attempted suicide. Patients who had attempted suicide were younger, had longer illness duration, and more severe general psychopathology and depressive symptoms than those who had not. Logistic regression analysis confirmed that suicide attempts were correlated with age, smoking, and depression. No cognitive performance differences were observed between patients who had and had not attempted suicide. CONCLUSIONS In China, patients with chronic schizophrenia may have a higher prevalence of lifetime suicide attempts than the general population. Some demographic and clinical variables were related to suicide attempts in patients with chronic schizophrenia.

Abstract
Several studies have reported a link between lipid disorders and suicidality. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between suicidal behavior and blood lipid profiles in patients with first-episode and drug-naive (FEDN) major depressive disorder (MDD). The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between plasma lipid profiles and suicide attempts in a large sample of FEDN MDD patients in the Chinese Han population, which has not been reported. A total of 1,718 MDD outpatients were recruited. Their clinical and demographic data as well as plasma lipid parameters were collected. We obtained suicide attempt data through interviews with patients and their family members. We rated the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) for all patients. The suicide attempt rate of MDD patients was 20.14%, of which 13.68% in the last month and 6.46% in the past. Further, compared with non-attempters, suicide attempters had significantly higher total levels of cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), higher HAMA and HAMD scores, but significantly lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) levels. Logistic regression analysis showed that suicide attempts were correlated with higher TC, lower HDL-c, and higher HAMA and HAMD scores with the adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 1.35, 0.52,1.28, and 1.08, respectively (all p < 0.05). Our findings suggest that FEDN patients with MDD have a high rate of attempted suicide. In the early stage of MDD patients, certain blood lipid parameters and more severe symptoms of anxiety and depression are correlated with suicide attempts. However, due to the cross-sectional design of this study, it is impossible to draw a causal relationship between lipid profiles and suicide attempts. Moreover, an inverse correlation can also be considered, that is, high cholesterol may be the consequence of suicide attempts and depression.

Abstract
Associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and cholesterol in depressed patients are unclear. Therefore, we compared 78 adult outpatients with major depressive disorder (MDD) with (n = 24) or without (n = 54) experiences of physical violence in childhood. Background data were collected with questionnaires, and total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were measured from fasting blood samples. Patients with a history of childhood physical violence had lower levels of TC than the control group. No differences were observed in HDL-C, LDL-C, or low-grade inflammation levels between the two groups. In multivariate models, decreased levels of TC were associated with childhood physical violence, and these associations remained significant after adjustments for age, gender, lifestyle, metabolic condition, socioeconomic situation, psychiatric status, suicidality, low-grade inflammation, the chronicity of depression, medications used and somatic diseases. At the 8-month follow-up, the results were essentially the same when the Trauma and Distress Scale (TADS) was used as the measure of ACEs. The specific mechanisms underlying cholesterol alterations associated with ACEs are a topic for future studies. Better understanding of these mechanisms might lead to possible new interventions in the prevention of adverse health effects resulting from ACEs.

Abstract
Peripheral biomarkers for suicide have been studied generating mixed results. We investigated the association between serum lipid levels and suicide attempts in subjects with different mental disorders. We conducted a cross-sectional study, including 593 inpatients with schizophrenia spectrum, bipolar, major depressive, and personality disorders, hypothesizing that subjects with lower total cholesterol levels would have higher rates of recent suicide attempts. Contrary to our hypothesis, individuals with lower total cholesterol levels (<160 mg/dL) showed lower rates also of suicide attempts (OR adjusted for age and gender: 0.56; one-tailed p = 0.03). Further logistic regression models failed to estimate any association of continuous levels between total/low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol/ triglycerides, and suicide attempts, also considering diagnosis and suicide methods. An association between lipid profile and suicide attempts in subjects with mental disorders is not fully supported. Further research is needed to clarify the role of biomarkers in suicidal behaviors.

Abstract
Suicide is major public health concern; one million individuals worldwide die by suicide each year of which there are many more attempts. Thus, it is imperative that robust and reliable indicators, or biomarkers, of suicide risk be identified so that individuals at risk can be identified and provided appropriate interventions as quickly as possible. Previous work has revealed a relationship between low levels of circulating cholesterol and suicide risk, implicating cholesterol level as one such potential biomarker, but the factors underlying this relationship remain unknown. In the present study, we applied a combination of bivariate polygenic and coefficient-of-relatedness analysis, followed by mediation analysis, in a large sample of Mexican-American individuals from extended pedigrees [N = 1897; 96 pedigrees (average size = 19.17 individuals, range = 2-189) 60% female; mean age = 42.58 years, range = 18-97 years, sd = 15.75 years] with no exclusion criteria for any given psychiatric disorder. We observed that total esterified cholesterol measured at the time of psychiatric assessment shared a significant genetic overlap with risk for suicide attempt (ρg = -0.64, p = 1.24 × 10-04). We also found that total unesterified cholesterol measured around 20 years prior to assessment varied as a function of genetic proximity to an affected individual (h2 = 0.21, se = 0.10, p = 8.73 × 10-04; βsuicide = -0.70, se = 0.25, p = 8.90 × 10-03). Finally, we found that the relationship between total unesterified cholesterol and suicide risk was significantly mediated by ABCA-1-specific cholesterol efflux capacity (βsuicide-efflux = -0.45, p = 0.039; βefflux-cholexterol = -0.34, p < 0.0001; βindirect = -0.15, p = 0.044). These findings suggest that the relatively well-delineated process of cholesterol metabolism and associated molecular pathways will be informative for understanding the neurobiological underpinnings of risk for suicide attempt.

Abstract
Lipidomic analysis can be used to efficiently identify hundreds of lipid molecular species in biological materials and has been recently established as an important tool for biomarker discovery in various neuropsychiatric disorders including major depressive disorder (MDD). In this study, quantitative targeted serum lipidomic profiling was performed on female subjects using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Global lipid profiling of pooled serum samples from 10 patients currently with MDD (cMDD), 10 patients with remitted MDD (rMDD), and 10 healthy controls revealed 37 differentially regulated lipids (DRLs). DRLs were further verified using multiple-reaction monitoring (MRM) in each of the 25 samples from the three groups of independent cohorts. Using multivariate analysis and MRM data we identified serum biomarker panels of discriminatory lipids that differentiated between pairs of groups: lysophosphatidic acid (LPA)(16:1), triglycerides (TG)(44:0), and TG(54:8) distinguished cMDD from controls with 76% accuracy; lysophosphatidylcholines(16:1), TG(44:0), TG(46:0), and TG(50:1) distinguished between cMDD and rMDD at 65% accuracy; and LPA(16:1), TG(52:6), TG(54:8), and TG(58:10) distinguished between rMDD and controls with 60% accuracy. Our lipidomic analysis identified peripheral lipid signatures of MDD, which thereby provides providing important biomarker candidates for MDD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been proposed that the risk of death by suicide is higher in patients with diabetes than in the general population. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the risk factors of suicidal behavior in patients with type 2 diabetes. The aim of the present study was to analyze the prevalence of suicide attempt and determine the risk factors of suicide attempt, in patients with type 2 diabetes in a Mexican population. METHODS Clinic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, biochemical levels, depression, and suicidal behavior were evaluated in 185 Mexican patients with type 2 diabetes. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to find predictive factors of suicide attempt. RESULTS 11.4% of patients reported previous suicide attempts n = 21). Younger patients (OR: 3.63, 95% CI: 1.29⁻10.19), having depression (OR: 3.33, 95% CI: 1.13⁻9.76) and normal BMI (OR: 3.14, 95% CI: 1.11⁻8.83), were predictive factors of suicide attempt. No other variables in the study showed statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS Our results showed a high prevalence of suicidal behavior in patients with type 2 diabetes. We found that younger age, depression and normal BMI could be risk factors of suicide attempt in these patients. Therefore, psychiatric interventions to prevent depression and suicidal behavior in this population are necessary. New studies using larger samples are necessary to replicate and confirm these results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common genetic disease predisposing affected individuals to a high risk of cardiovascular disease. Yet, considerable uncertainty exists regarding its impact on psychosocial wellbeing. OBJECTIVES We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the association between FH and symptoms of anxiety and depression, and health-related quality of life (HRQL). METHODS We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Global Health, the Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, and PubMed for peer-reviewed literature published in English between January 1, 1990 and January 1, 2018. Quantitative and qualitative studies were eligible if they included patients with confirmed FH and evaluated its association with symptoms of anxiety or depression, or HRQL. We performed a narrative synthesis of studies, including thematic analysis of qualitative studies, and where data permitted, random-effects meta-analysis reporting standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS We found 10 eligible studies measuring HRQL, depression and anxiety. Random-effects meta-analysis of 4 (n = 4293) and 5 studies (n = 5098), respectively, showed that patients with FH had slightly lower symptoms of anxiety (SMD: -0.29 [95% CI: -0.53, -0.04]) and mental HRQL (SMD: -0.10 [95% -0.20, -0.00]) relative to general population controls. No significant differences existed in depressive symptoms (SMD: 0.04 [95% CI: -0.12, 0.19]) or physical HRQL scores (SMD: 0.02 [95% CI: -0.09, 0.12]). CONCLUSIONS Our systematic review suggests that patients with FH may report small but measurable differences in anxiety symptoms and mental HRQL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We examined if treatment with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), or statins after acute coronary syndrome (ACS) are associated with decreased risk of depression. METHOD This register-based cohort study included all individuals with a first-time hospital admissions with an ACS diagnosis registered between January 2001 to December 2009 (N=91,842) and a comparable reference population without ACS (N=91,860). Information of ASA, NSAID, and statin use were retrieved from a national prescription register. The study population was followed for hospitalization with depression or receiving prescription of antidepressant medication for up to one year after ACS or study entry (early depression) or one to twelve years after ACS or study entry (late depression). RESULTS ASA use after ACS was associated with decreased risk of early depression with hazard ratios (HR) of 0.89 (95% confidence interval 0.85-0.93) but not with late depression 0.96 (0.90-1.01). The corresponding HRs for statin were 0.90 (0.86-0.94) and 0.86 (0.82-0.90). In the non-ACS population, statin use was not associated with neither early nor late depression (HRs 1.04 (0.96-1.12) and 1.00 (0.95-1.06)), while ASA was associated with increased risk of late (HR 1.09 (1.04-1.14)) but not early depression (HR 1.03 (0.97-1.09)). In both populations, NSAID use was associated with increased risk of late but not early depression. CONCLUSION Use of ASA or statins were associated with decreased risk of depression in ACS patients but not in individuals without ACS, while use of NSAID was associated with increased risk of late depression in both populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cholesterol has been associated as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Recently, however, there is growing evidence about crucial requirement of neuron membrane cholesterol in the organization and function of the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor. For this, low cholesterol level has been reported to be associated with depression and suicidality. However there have been inconsistent reports about this finding and the exact relationship between these factors remains controversial. Therefore, we investigated the link between serum cholesterol and its fractions with depression disorder and suicide attempt in 467 adult subjects in Mexican mestizo population. METHODS Plasma levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) were determined in 261 MDD patients meeting the DSM-5 criteria for major depressive disorder (MDD), 59 of whom had undergone an episode of suicide attempt, and 206 healthy controls. RESULTS A significant decrease in total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, VLDL-cholesterol and triglyceride serum levels was observed in the groups of MDD patients and suicide attempt compared to those without suicidal behavior (p < 0.05). After adjusting for covariates, lower cholesterol levels were significantly associated with MDD (OR 4.229 CI 95% 2.555 - 7.000, p<.001) and suicide attempt (OR 5.540 CI 95% 2.825 - 10.866, p<.001) CONCLUSIONS: These results support the hypothesis that lower levels of cholesterol are associated with mood disorders like MDD and suicidal behavior. More mechanistic studies are needed to further explain this association.

Abstract
Evidence suggests an association between low lipid levels and suicidality in subjects with severe mental disorders. This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at exploring differences in lipid profile between suicide attempters and non-attempters with bipolar disorder. We included observational studies providing comparative cross-sectional data on total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides levels. We searched main Electronic Databases, identifying 11 studies that met our inclusion criteria, including also unpublished data. Meta-analyses based on random-effects models were carried out, generating pooled standardized mean differences (SMDs). Heterogeneity among studies was estimated using the I2 index. The meta-analyses included data on lipid profile from 11 studies based on 288 subjects with and 754 without suicide attempt, respectively. No differences in total cholesterol (SMD: -0.10; 95%CI: -0.30 to 0.10; p=0.34), LDL-cholesterol (SMD: -0.26; 95%CI: -0.65 to 0.13; p=0.19), and triglycerides (SMD: -0.06; 95%CI: -0.31 to 0.19; p=0.63) were detected. Heterogeneity across studies was low-moderate and no risk of publication bias was found. Subgroup analyses showed no differences on effect size across different study characteristics, including different time-frames of suicide attempt, except for small sample size. Therefore, the evidence for an association between serum lipid profile and suicidality in bipolar disorder cannot be claimed. More research is needed to better understand the mechanisms underlying suicidal behaviours in bipolar patients, exploring further peripheral biomarkers as this may help clinicians screen and prevent suicidality.

Abstract
Suicide is a major public health concern and a leading cause of death in most societies. Suicidal behaviour is complex and heterogeneous, likely resulting from several causes. It associates with multiple factors, including psychopathology, personality traits, early-life adversity and stressful life events, among others. Over the past decades, studies in fields ranging from neuroanatomy, genetics and molecular psychiatry have led to a model whereby behavioural dysregulation, including suicidal behaviour (SB), develops as a function of biological adaptations in key brain systems. More recently, the unravelling of the unique epigenetic processes that occur in the brain has opened promising avenues in suicide research. The present review explores the various facets of the current knowledge on suicidality and discusses how the rapidly evolving field of neurobehavioural epigenetics may fuel our ability to understand, and potentially prevent, SB.

Abstract
Convergent evidence strongly suggests major depressive disorder is heterogeneous in its etiology and clinical characteristics. Depression biomarkers hold potential for identifying etiological subtypes, improving diagnostic accuracy, predicting treatment response, and personalization of treatment. Human plasma contains numerous sterols that have not been systematically studied. Changes in cholesterol concentrations have been implicated in suicide and depression, suggesting plasma sterols may be depression biomarkers. Here, we investigated associations between plasma levels of 34 sterols (measured by mass spectrometry) and scores on the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-Self Report (QIDS-SR16) scale in 3117 adult participants in the Dallas Heart Study, an ethnically diverse, population-based cohort. We built a random forest model using feature selection from a pool of 43 variables including demographics, general health indicators, and sterol concentrations. This model comprised 19 variables, 13 of which were sterol concentrations, and explained 15.5% of the variation in depressive symptoms. Desmosterol concentrations below the fifth percentile (1.9 ng/mL, OR 1.9, 95% CI 1.2–2.9) were significantly associated with depressive symptoms of at least moderate severity (QIDS-SR16 score ≥10.5). This is the first study reporting a novel association between plasma concentrations cholesterol precursors and depressive symptom severity.

Abstract
Several studies have explored the relationship between C-reactive protein (CRP), serum lipid levels, risk of suicide and alexithymia or impulsivity in mood or anxiety disorders. However, to date, no study has evaluated the effects of anhedonia on these parameters. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between anhedonia, alexithymia, impulsivity, suicidal ideation, recent suicide attempt, C-reactive protein (CRP) and lipid levels in patients with mood or anxiety disorders. One hundred and twenty-two inpatients with mood or anxiety disorders were recruited. Alexithymia and impulsivity were rated by the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and the Barratt impulsivity scale (BIS-10), respectively. Anhedonia and depression were rated by the Temporal Experience Pleasure Scale (TEPS) and the Beck Depression inventory (BDI-II). The TEPS contained two subscales rating anticipatory and consummatory anhedonia. From the BDI-II an anhedonia subscale was extracted rating anhedonia-state. Trait consummatory anhedonia and state anhedonia were associated with low levels of total cholesterol or HDL and low levels of triglycerides respectively. Trait anticipatory anhedonia and state anhedonia were associated with suicidal ideations. The difficulty of identifying feelings component of alexithymia was associated with low levels of total cholesterol and LDL. A high level of suicidal ideation was associated with low levels of HDL. Higher levels of CRP were found in inpatients having recently attempted suicide compared with inpatients who had not attempted suicide. In mood and anxiety disorders, anhedonia and the "difficulty of identifying feelings" component of alexithymia (which has previously been found to be associated with suicide risk) could explain the relationship between serum lipid levels and higher suicide risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There have been many studies on psychiatric disorders, but very little is known about the biology of suicide with schizophrenia. In the present study, we are looking for a possible connection between altered lipid profile and suicidal behavior in schizophrenic Tunisian patients. METHODS Assay of total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), and triglycerides (TG) has been done for 126 schizophrenic patients with and without suicide attempts and 131 healthy controls recruited in the University Hospital of Monastir. RESULTS TC and LDL-c levels were significantly higher in schizophrenic patients compared to controls. TC was significantly lower in schizophrenic patients with suicide attempt compared to those without suicide attempt. Depending to the sonority of suicide attempt, TC was significantly lower in patients with recent suicide attempt compared to those with lifetime suicide attempt and without suicide attempt (p < 0.001), and no significant differences between TG, LDL-c, and HDL-c were noted. CONCLUSIONS Results of this study showed that TC levels in schizophrenic patients after a recent suicide attempt are significantly lower than in patients without suicide attempt and with lifetime suicide attempts. TC can be one of biological markers defined suicidal risk for schizophrenic patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the association between serum lipid levels and suicidality, as evidence from previous studies has been inconsistent. METHODS We identified relevant studies by searching Medline, Web of Science, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (1980 to Dec. 5, 2014). Studies assessing the association between serum total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and/or triglycerides (TG) levels and suicidality were included. We used a random-effects model to take into account heterogeneity among studies. RESULTS We included 65 studies with a total of 510 392 participants in our analysis. Compared with the nonsuicidal patients, suicidal patients had significantly lower serum TC (weighted mean difference [WMD] -22.35, 95% confidence interval [CI] -27.95 to -16.75), LDL-C (WMD -19.56, 95% CI -26.13 to -12.99) and TG (WMD -23.40, 95% CI -32.38 to -14.42) levels, while compared with the healthy controls, suicidal patients had significantly lower TC (WMD -24.75, 95% CI -27.71 to -21.78), HDL-C (WMD -1.75, 95% CI -3.01 to -0.48) and LDL-C (WMD -3.85, 95% CI -7.45 to -0.26) levels. Furthermore, compared with the highest serum TC level category, a lower serum TC level was associated with a 112% (95% CI 40%-220%) higher risk of suicidality, including a 123% (95% CI 24%-302%) higher risk of suicide attempt and an 85% (95 CI 7%-221%) higher risk of suicide completion. The cut-off values for low and high serum TC level were in compliance with the categories reported in the original studies. LIMITATIONS A major limitation of our study is the potential heterogeneity in most of the analyses. In addition, the suicidal behaviour was examined using different scales or methods across studies, which may further explain heterogeneity among the studies. CONCLUSION We identified an inverse association between serum lipid levels and suicidality. More mechanistic studies are needed to further explain this association.

Abstract
This prospective observational study included 345 (70%) of 489 patients discharged from an emergency psychiatric hospital during one year. Episodes of offending and victimization were recorded during first year after discharge. Forty-eight persons (14%) committed violent offenses only, 27 persons (8%) were violence victims only, and 42 persons (12%) were both offenders and victims. Significant differences in demographic and clinical variables were found between the three groups. The results pointed to two distinct groups of victims: one group with a robust offender-victim overlap and another group without offender-victim overlap. The latter group was difficult to distinguish from other discharged patients.

Abstract
There are inconsistent reports showing that the relationship between total cholesterol (TC) level and suicidality might be gender-specific. We compared 30 first-episode schizophrenia (FES) patients reporting suicidal ideation based on the Operational Criteria for Psychotic Illness (OPCRIT) checklist with 70 FES patients, who have never experienced suicidal ideation. After controlling for potential confounders, higher TC was associated with suicidal ideation only in FES females. Future studies should disentangle biological underpinnings of this gender-specific association.
