Absorption spectra of PTCDI: a combined UV-Vis and TD-DFT study

Electronic Couplings versus Thermal Fluctuations in the Internal Conversion of Perylene Diimides: The Battle to Localize the Exciton

Energy transfer processes among units of light-harvesting homo-oligomers impact the efficiency of these materials as components in organic optoelectronic devices such as solar cells. Perylene diimide (PDI), a prototypical dye, features exceptional light absorption and highly tunable optical and electronic properties. These properties can be modulated by varying the number of PDI units and linkers between them. Herein, atomistic nonadiabatic excited state molecular dynamics is used to explore the energy transfer during the internal conversion of acetylene and diacetylene bridged dimeric and trimeric PDIs. Our simulations reveal a significant impact of the bridge type on the transient exciton localization/delocalization between units of PDI dimers. After electronic relaxation, larger exciton delocalization occurs in the PDI dimer connected by the diacetylene bridge with respect to the one connected by the shorter acetylene bridge. These changes can be rationalized by the Frenkel exciton model. We outline a technique for deriving parameters for this model using inputs provided by nonadiabatic dynamics simulations. Frenkel exciton description reveals an interplay between the relative strengths of the diagonal and off-diagonal disorders. Moreover, atomistic simulations and the Frenkel exciton model of the PDI trimer systems corroborate in detail the localization properties of the exciton on the molecular units during the internal conversion to the lowest-energy excited state when the units become effectively decoupled. Overall, atomistic nonadiabatic simulations in combination with the Frenkel exciton model can serve as a predictive framework for analyzing and predicting desired exciton traps in PDI-based oligomers designed for organic electronics and photonic devices.

Electronic and Nonlinear Optical Properties of B(III)-Submonoazaporphyrin-π-Diimide Compounds: A Density Functional Theory Study

Three hypothetical complexes were designed using diimides (PMDI, NTCDI, and PTCDI) as the acceptor unit and B(III)-submonoazaporphyrin (1) as the donor unit. These complexes have smaller HOMO-LUMO energy gaps (3.39-3.96 eV) than pristine 1 (6.61 eV). Further, the energy gap can be tuned by changing the number of benzene rings of these diimides. Remarkably, these proposed complexes possess considerable first hyperpolarizabilities (β0) (4865-6921 a.u.), and the regularity of the β0 values remained the same in the gas phase and toluene solvent conditions. There is an inverse relationship between the energy gap and the polarizability/first hyperpolarizability. In addition, absorption spectra, frontier molecular orbitals, and hole electron distributions were obtained using time-dependent density functional theory calculations to emphasize the relationship between structure and properties. Ultraviolet-Visible absorption spectra reveals that all complexes show satisfying IR working regions. Further analysis of the first hyperpolarizability density reveals the nature of the excellent NLO properties of the studied systems. This study can provide valuable insights for the development of potential high-performance NLO molecules.

Exciton Delocalization and Polarizability in Perylenetetracarboxylic Diimide Probed Using Electroabsorption and Fluorescence Spectroscopies

Perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI) is an n-type organic semiconductor molecule that has been widely utilized in numerous applications such as photocatalysis and field-effect transistors. Polarizability and dipole moment, which are inherent properties of molecules, are important parameters that determine their responses to external electric and optical fields, physical properties, and reactivity. These parameters are fundamentally important for the design of innovative materials. In this study, the effects of external electric fields on absorption and fluorescence spectra were investigated to obtain the PTCDI parameters. The PTCDI substituted by an octyl group (N,N'-Dioctyl-3,4,9,10-perylenedicarboximide) dispersed in a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrix was studied in this work. The features of vibronic progression in the absorption spectrum were analogous to those observed in solution. The red shift of the absorption band caused by the Stark effect was mainly observed in the presence of an external electric field. Changes in parameters such as the dipole moment and polarizability between the ground and the Franck-Condon excited states of the PTCDI monomer were determined. The fluorescence spectrum shows a contribution from a broad fluorescence band at wavelengths longer than the monomer fluorescence band. This broad fluorescence is ascribed to the excimer-like fluorescence of PTCDI. The effects of the electric field on the fluorescence spectrum, known as the Stark fluorescence or electrofluorescence spectrum, were measured. Fluorescence quenching is observed in the presence of an external electric field. The change in the polarizability of the monomer fluorescence band is in good agreement with that of the electroabsorption spectrum. A larger change in the polarizability was observed for the excimer-like fluorescence band than that for the monomer band. This result is consistent with exciton delocalization between PTCDI molecules in the excimer-like state.

Biogenic Polymer-Based Fluorescent Assemblies: Versatile Platforms for Ultrasensitive ATP Detection and Enzyme Assay

Here, we investigated the optical properties of biocompatible supramolecular assemblies formed through electrostatic interactions between anionic fluorescent dyes and biogenic polymers. The dynamic equilibrium between the monomeric form (fluorescent) and aggregates (nonfluorescent) of dye molecules is responsible for the stimuli-responsive behavior of these polymer composites, which can respond to changes in pH, temperature, and ionic strength. Furthermore, we employed supramolecular assemblies for the purpose of turn-on fluorescence sensing of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) at physiological pH. Notably, no interference was observed even in the presence of well-known competing analytes such as pyrophosphate. In addition to its outstanding selectivity, the present system can detect ATP at concentrations as low as 4.8 nM. The superior detection capabilities are achieved through multiple interactions with biogenic polymers, involving the adenine ring, ribose unit (through hydrogen bonding), and phosphate groups (via charge pairing) of ATP. Given the remarkable sensitivity to ATP, we have applied the present system for the detection of a dephosphorylating enzyme, alkaline phosphatase.

A TiO2 nanorod and perylene diimide based inorganic/organic nanoheterostructure photoanode for photoelectrochemical urea oxidation

Visible light-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) urea oxidation using inorganic/organic nano-heterostructure (NH) photoanodes is an attractive method for hydrogen (H2) production. In this article, inorganic/organic NHs (TiO2/PDIEH) consisting of a N,N-bis(2-ethylhexyl)perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide (PDIEH) thin layer over TiO2 nanorods (NRs) were fabricated for the PEC urea oxidation reaction (UOR). In these NHs, a PDIEH layer was anchored on TiO2 NR arrays using the spin-coating technique, which is beneficial for the uniform deposition of PDIEH on TiO2 NRs. Uniform deposition facilitated adequate interface contact between PDIEH and TiO2 NRs. TiO2/PDIEH NHs achieved a high current density of 1.1 mA cm-2 at 1.96 VRHE compared to TiO2 NRs. TiO2/PDIEH offers long-term stability under light illumination with 90.21% faradaic efficiency. TiO2/PDIEH exhibits a solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 0.52%. This outcome opens up new opportunities for inorganic/organic NHs for high-performance PEC urea oxidation.

Forcing Twisted 1,7-Dibromoperylene Diimides to Flatten in the Solid State: What a Difference an Atom Makes

Perylene diimides (PDI) are workhorses in the field of organic electronics, owing to their appealing n-semiconducting properties. Optimization of their performances is widely pursued by bay-atom substitution and diverse imide functionalization. Bulk solids and thin-films of these species crystallize in a variety of stacking configurations, depending on the geometry of the stable conformation of the polyaromatic core. We here demonstrate that 1,7-dibromo-substituted perylene diimides, PDI(H2 Br2 ), possessing a heavily twisted conformation in the gas phase, in solution and in the solids, can be easily flattened in the solid state into centrosymmetric molecules if the polyaromatic cores form π-π stabilized chains. This is achieved by using axial residues with low stereochemical hindrance, as guaranteed by a single CH2 /NH spacer directly linked to the imide function. Structural powder diffraction and DFT calculations on four newly designed species of the PDI(H2 Br2 ) class coherently show that, thanks to the flexibility of the N-X-Ar link (X=CH2 /NH), flat cores are indeed obtained by overcoming the interconversion barrier between twisted atropoisomers, of only 26.5 kJ mol-1 . This strategy may then be useful to induce "anomalously flat" polyaromatic cores of different kinds (substituted acenes/rylenes) in the solid state, towards suitable crystal packing and orbital interactions for improved electronic performances.

Ultrasensitive Detection of Cu(II) and Pb(II) Using a Water-Soluble Perylene Probe

The selective detection of metal ions in water, using sustainable detection systems, is of crescent importance for monitoring water environments and drinking water safety. One of the key elements of future chemical sciences is the use of sustainable approaches in the design of new materials. In this study, we design and synthesize a low-cost, water-soluble potassium salt of 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic acid (PTAS), which shows a selective optical response on the addition of Cu²⁺ and Pb²⁺ ions in aqueous solutions. By using a water-soluble chromophore, the interactions with the metal ions are definitely more intimate and efficient, with respect to standard methods employing cosolvents. The detection limits of PTAS for both Cu²⁺ and Pb²⁺ are found to be 2 µM by using a simple absorbance mode, and even lower (1 μM) with NMR experiments, indicating that this analyte–probe system is sensitive enough for the detection of copper ions in drinking water and lead ions in waste water. The complexation of PTAS with both ions is supported with NMR studies, which reveal the formation of new species between PTAS and analytes. By combining a low-cost water-soluble chromophore with efficient analyte–probe interactions due to the use of aqueous solutions, the results here obtained provide a basis for designing sustainable sensing systems.

How the Interplay among Conformational Disorder, Solvation, Local, and Charge-Transfer Excitations Affects the Absorption Spectrum and Photoinduced Dynamics of Perylene Diimide Dimers: A Molecular Dynamics/Quantum Vibronic Approach

In this contribution we present a mixed quantum-classical dynamical approach for the computation of vibronic absorption spectra of molecular aggregates and their nonadiabatic dynamics, taking into account the coupling between local excitations (LE) and charge-transfer (CT) states. The approach is based on an adiabatic (Ad) separation between the soft degrees of freedom (DoFs) of the system and the stiff vibrations, which are described by the quantum dynamics (QD) of wave packets (WPs) moving on the coupled potential energy surfaces (PESs) of the LE and CT states. These PESs are described with a linear vibronic coupling (LVC) Hamiltonian, parameterized by an overlap-based diabatization on the grounds of time-dependent density functional theory computations. The WPs time evolution is computed with the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method, using effective modes defined through a hierarchical representation of the LVC Hamiltonian. The soft DoFs are sampled with classical molecular dynamics (MD), and the coupling between the slow and fast DoFs is included by recomputing the key parameters of the LVC Hamiltonians, specifically for each MD configuration. This method, named Ad-MD|gLVC, is applied to a perylene diimide (PDI) dimer in acetonitrile and water solutions, and it is shown to accurately reproduce the change in the vibronic features of the absorption spectrum upon aggregation. Moreover, the microscopic insight offered by the MD trajectories allows for a detailed understanding of the role played by the fluctuation of the aggregate structure on the shape of the vibronic spectrum and on the population of LE and CT states. The nonadiabatic QD predicts an extremely fast (∼50 fs) energy transfer between the two LEs. CT states have only a moderate effect on the absorption spectrum, despite the fact that after photoexcitation they are shown to acquire a fast and non-negligible population, highlighting their relevance in dictating the charge separation and transport in PDI-based optical devices.

Light-Induced Charge Accumulation in PTCDI/Pentacene/Ag(111) Heterojunctions

The incorporation of singlet fission (SF) chromophores in solar cells is expected to bring significant increases in the power conversion efficiency thanks to multiexciton generation. However, efficient charge generation in the device is determined by the energy level alignment (ELA) between the active materials, which should favor exciton transport and separation under illumination. By combining ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and optical differential reflectance measurements, we determine the ELA in a prototypical SF heterojunction between pentacene (Pc) and perylene-tetracarboxylic-diimide (PTCDI) grown on Ag(111). Time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on such a system reveals light-induced modifications of the ELA; by measuring the transient shift of the core level photoemission lines we observe an accumulation of long-lived holes in the PTCDI within the first hundred picoseconds after the optical pump.

Unusual binary aggregates of perylene bisimide revealed by their electronic transitions in helium nanodroplets and DFT calculations

The S1 ← S0 electronic transition of perylene bisimide (PBI) and its binary aggregates were investigated using a combination of helium nanodroplet isolation spectroscopy and computational methods. First, well-resolved vibronic bands of the PBI monomer obtained under the superfluid helium nanodroplet environment were compared to simulated vibronic spectra with anharmonic corrections of the band positions. Second, about ten sets of weaker vibronic bands were observed, which show similar vibronic patterns as that of the PBI monomer and have their band origins red-shifted by about 8 to 218 cm-1. Experimental Poisson curve analyses, performed at the origins of these new sets of bands and the PBI monomer, indicate that the carriers of these weaker red-shifted vibronic bands are binary adducts of PBI. Three types of PBI dimer structures where the electronic transition dipole moments of the two subunits are perpendicular to each other were proposed as possible carriers of these red-shifted vibronic patterns. Extensive vibronic simulations were carried out in a multi-step procedure with TD-DFT, vertical Hessian, and finally adiabatic Hessian approaches. Small red-shifted band origins and very similar vibronic patterns to that of the monomer were predicted for unusual, T-shaped, type I dimer structures and are in close agreement with the experimental data. The combined experimental and theoretical results indicate that the helium nanodroplet environment enables the formation of these unusual T-shaped dimers and stabilizes them.

Langmuir-Schaefer Perylene Derivative Films: Influence of the Molecular Chemical Structure on the Supramolecular Arrangement

Since the optical and electrical properties of organic thin films devices depend on their supramolecular arrangement and the molecular chemical structure, the understanding of such characteristics is essential for the optimization of these devices. In this study, we determine the supramolecular arrangement of thin films produced using the Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) technique and explain how its supramolecular arrangement is affected by the molecular chemical structure using two perylene derivatives: bis-butylimide (BuPTCD) and bis-phenethylimide (PhPTCD). The optical absorption measurements reveal that both films grow homogeneously and indicate that the presence of H aggregates (forbidden emission) is higher for BuPTCD LS film than for PhPTCD LS film. Atomic force microscopic analysis shows that the PhPTCD LS film is rougher than the BuPTCD film. In addition, FTIR analyses indicate that both films have head-on molecular organization. XRD patterns reveal that both the BuPTCD LS film and the PhPTCD LS film are crystalline, but that crystallinity is more prevalent in the BuPTCD LS film. Thus, the results show that the difference presented in the chemical structures leads the films to have different supramolecular arrangements, with consequences for their optical properties.

Picene and PTCDI based solution processable ambipolar OFETs

Facile and efficient solution-processed bottom gate top contact organic field-effect transistor was fabricated by employing the active layer of picene (donor, D) and N,N'-di(dodecyl)-perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide (acceptor, A). Balanced hole (0.12 cm2/Vs) and electron (0.10 cm2/Vs) mobility with Ion/off of 104 ratio were obtained for 1:1 ratio of D/A blend. On increasing the ratio of either D or A, the charge carrier mobility and Ion/off ratio improved than that of the pristine molecules. Maximum hole (µmax,h) and electron mobilities (µmax,e) were achieved up to 0.44 cm2/Vs for 3:1 and 0.25 cm2/Vs for 1:3, (D/A) respectively. This improvement is due to the donor phase function as the trap center for minority holes and decreased trap density of the dielectric layer, and vice versa. High ionization potential (- 5.71 eV) of 3:1 and lower electron affinity of (- 3.09 eV) of 1:3 supports the fine tuning of frontier molecular orbitals in the blend. The additional peak formed for the blends at high negative potential of - 1.3 V in cyclic voltammetry supports the molecular level electronic interactions of D and A. Thermal studies supported the high thermal stability of D/A blends and SEM analysis of thin films indicated their efficient molecular packing. Quasi-π-π stacking owing to the large π conjugated plane and the crystallinity of the films are well proved by GIXRD. DFT calculations also supported the electronic distribution of the molecules. The electron density of states (DOS) of pristine D and A molecules specifies the non-negligible interaction coupling among the molecules. This D/A pair has unlimited prospective for plentiful electronic applications in non-volatile memory devices, inverters and logic circuits.

Computational study of the intermolecular interactions and their effect on the UV-visible spectra of the ternary liquid mixture of benzene, ethanol and propylene glycol

Quantum chemical calculations are well-equipped to provide answers to the questions regarding the different aspects of intermolecular interactions. We investigate the benzene, ethanol and 1,2 propanediol ternary mixture with theoretical as well as experimental UV-Vis spectroscopy. An extensive theoretical study on the molecular structure and UV-Vis spectral analysis was undertaken using density functional theory (DFT) method. Structural parameter analysis and the HOMO-LUMO (highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) energy gap help to describe the possible interaction between molecules in dimer and in combination. Interaction energy has been calculated from topological study. Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations on dimer/cluster in gas phase help to understand the effect of the molecular interaction on the overall spectral shift and related intensity variation. Our results show that in the ternary mixture, the interaction energies of the interactions are π-π interaction: 0.52-2.57 kcal/mol, Hp-π interaction: 1.15 kcal/mol and H-bonding: 2.49 to 4.46 kcal/mol. The π-π interaction and H-bonding cause red shift in absorption spectra while Hp-π interaction causes blue shift. In the ternary mixture, the strength of different kinds of interaction depends on the concentration, and as each interaction has its own effect on spectral shift, the overall experimental spectra get broader and distorted from the Gaussian shape.

Supramolecular architecture and electrical conductivity in organic semiconducting thin films

Organic thin films are an essential component of the structure of optical and electronic devices. However, the optical and electrical properties of these films depend on their supramolecular architecture, which may vary according to the techniques used to manufacture them. Here, the correlation between conductivity and supramolecular architecture was investigated. The supramolecular architecture was analyzed in terms of the molecular organization and J- or H-aggregation established during the fabrication of perylene tetracarboxylic diimide (PTCD) nanometric films. Three deposition techniques, Langmuir-Schaefer (LS), Langmuir-Blodgett (LB), and Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD), were evaluated. The UV-vis absorption spectra indicated that LS, LB, and PVD films grow homogeneously. Also, the presence of J and H aggregates was observed for all films, the H aggregates prevailing for the LB film. The FTIR measurements suggested that the molecular organization is similar for LS and LB films, with a tendency to form head-on organization onto a solid substrate. For the PVD film, the perylene macrocycles are inclined approximately 45° relative to the substrate. AFM measurements indicated a homogenous surface for all films. In terms of electrical conductivity, the highest conductivity was found for LS, followed by LB and PVD. The conductivity values were interpreted in terms of molecular organization and J- or H-aggregate formation.

Characterization of novel perylene diimides containing aromatic amino acid side chains

Perylene diimide derivatives have attracted initial interest as industrial dyes. Recently, much attention has been focused on their strong π-π stacks resulting from the large PDI aromatic core. These PDI stacks have distinct optical properties, and provide informative models that could mimic light-harvesting systems and initial charge transfer typical of photosynthetic systems. The absorption property of PDI derivatives may be tuned from visible to near-infrared region by peripheral substitution. We have studied a new class of PDI derivatives with aryl substituents derived from the side chains of aromatic aminoacids (Tyrosine, Tryptophan and Phenylalanine). We have investigated their absorption and the fluorescence properties in a set of organic solvents and established their different tendencies to aggregate in solution despite their solubility. Most aggregation appears to be unordered. One PDI analogue (the one formed from Tyr) in Methanol, however, appears to form J-type aggregates. Based on our results the compounds appear to be promising for future investigations regarding the interaction of these dyes with biomolecules.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons obtained by lateral core extension of mesogenic perylenes: absorption and optoelectronic properties

Bilaterally extended perylenes were synthesized, characterized, and used to create organic light-emitting devices. A detailed investigation of the electronic and optical properties, and a comparison of perylene derivatives and compounds with unilaterally and bilaterally extended aromatic cores, reveal unexpected changes of the absorption spectrum, which are in agreement with simulations based on DFT.
