Abstract
BACKGROUND Research into the shared and distinct brain dysfunctions in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) and major depressive disorder (MDD) has been increasing. However, few studies have explored the application of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in investigating brain dysfunction and enhancing diagnostic methodologies in these two conditions. METHODS A general linear model was used for analysis of brain activation following task-state fNIRS from 131 patients with SCZ, 132 patients with MDD and 130 healthy controls (HCs). Subsequently, seventy-seven time-frequency analysis methods were used to construct new features of fNIRS, followed by the implementation of five machine learning algorithms to develop a differential diagnosis model for the three groups. This model was evaluated by comparing it to both a diagnostic model relying on traditional fNIRS features and assessments made by two psychiatrists. RESULTS Brain activation analysis revealed significantly lower activation in Broca's area, the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and the middle temporal gyrus for both the SCZ and MDD groups compared to HCs. Additionally, the SCZ group exhibited notably lower activation in the superior temporal gyrus and the subcentral gyrus compared to the MDD group. When distinguishing among the three groups using independent validation datasets, the models utilizing new fNIRS features achieved an accuracy of 85.90 % (AUC = 0.95). In contrast, models based on traditional fNIRS features reached an accuracy of 52.56 % (AUC = 0.66). The accuracies of the two psychiatrists were 42.00 % (AUC = 0.60) and 38.00 % (AUC = 0.50), respectively. CONCLUSION This investigation brings to light the shared and distinct neurobiological abnormalities present in SCZ and MDD, offering potential enhancements for extant diagnostic systems.

Abstract
Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a noninvasive functional neuroimaging modality that can detect changes in blood oxygenation levels by tracking cortical neural activity. We recorded the resting-state brain activity of 24 individuals with schizophrenia and 90 healthy controls for 8 min using a whole-head NIRS arrangement and then used partial correlation analysis to estimate the resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) between 17 cortical regions. We found that the RSFC between the bilateral orbitofrontal cortices (OFCs) and between the right temporal and parietal lobes was significantly higher in patients with schizophrenia than in healthy controls. The RSFC between the bilateral OFCs was positively correlated with negative symptom severity, whereas the RSFC between the right temporal and parietal lobes was positively correlated with the chlorpromazine equivalent for antipsychotics prescribed to patients with schizophrenia. This finding was consistent with that for the RSFC calculated using the anterior 52-channel signals. Our results suggest that NIRS-based RSFC measurements have potential clinical applications.

Abstract
This study applied the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate frontal activity in autism when performing verbal fluency test and emotion recall task. We recruited 32 autistic adults without intellectual disability and 30 typically-developing controls (TDC). Prefrontal hemodynamic changes were evaluated by fNIRS when the participants performed the verbal fluency test and emotion recall task. fNIRS signals in the prefrontal cortex were compared between autism and TDC. Compared to TDC, autistic adults showed comparable performance on the verbal fluency test but exhibited lower frontal activity on the vegetable category. In the verbal fluency test, left frontal activity in TDC significantly increased in the vegetable category (vs. fruit category). In the emotion recall task, left frontal activity increased significantly in TDC when recalling emotional (vs. neutral) events. This increase of left frontal activity on the more difficult works was not found in autism. Similarly, brain activities were related to test performance only in TDC but not in autism. In addition, more severe social deficits were associated with lower frontal activity when recalling emotional events, independent of autism diagnosis. Findings suggested reduced frontal activity in autism, as compared to TDC, when performing verbal fluency tests. The reduction of left frontal activation in verbal fluency test and emotion recall tasks might reflect on the social deficits of the individual. The fNIRS may potentially be applied in assessing frontal lobe function in autism and social deficits in general population. Trial registration number: NCT04010409.

Abstract
This review targets the application of the Verbal Fluency Task (VFT) in conjunction with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) for diagnosing psychiatric disorders, specifically in the contexts of China and Japan. These two countries are at the forefront of integrating fNIRS with VFT in clinical psychiatry, often employing this combination as a complementary tool alongside traditional psychiatric examinations. Our study aims to synthesize research findings on the hemodynamic responses elicited by VFT task in clinical settings of the two countries, analyzing variations in task design (phonological versus semantic), stimulus modality (auditory versus visual), and the impact of language typology. The focus on China and Japan is crucial, as it provides insights into the unique applications and adaptations of VFT in these linguistically and culturally distinct environments. By exploring these specific cases, our review underscores the importance of tailoring VFT to fit the linguistic and cultural context, thereby enhancing its validity and utility in cross-cultural psychiatric assessments.

Abstract
Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has shown some potential as an adjunctive intervention for ameliorating negative symptoms of schizophrenia, but its efficacy requires optimization. Recently, 'functional targeting' of stimulation holds promise for advancing tDCS efficacy by coupling tDCS with a cognitive task where the target brain regions are activated by that task and further specifically polarized by tDCS.The study used 48-channel functional near infra-red spectroscopy (fNIRS) aiming to determine a cognitive task that can effectively induce a cortical activation of the left DLPFC in schizophrenia patients with predominant negative symptoms before running a tDCS trial. Sixty schizophrenia patients with predominant negative symptoms completed measures of clinical and psychosocial functioning characteristics and assessments across cognitive domains. Hemodynamic changes during n-back working memory tasks with different cognitive loads (1-back and 2-back) and verbal fluency test (VFT) were measured using fNIRS. For n-back tasks, greater signal changes were found when the task required elevated cognitive load. One sample t-test revealed that only 2-back task elicited significant activation in left DLPFC (t = 4.23, FDR-corrected p = 0.0007). During VFT, patients failed to show significant task-related activity in left DLPFC (one sample t-test, t = -0.25, FDR-corrected p > 0.05). Our study implies that 2-back task can effectively activate left DLPFC in schizophrenia patients with predominant negative symptoms. This neurophysiologically-validated task is considered highly potential to be executed in conjunction with high-definition tDCS for "functional targeting" of the left DLPFC to treat negative symptoms in a double-blind randomized sham-control trial, registered on ClinicalTrials.gov Registry (ID: NCT05582980).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) provides direct and quantitative assessment of cortical hemodynamic response. It has been used to identify neurophysiological alterations in medication-naïve adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Hence, this study aimed to distinguish both medication-naïve and medicated adults with ADHD from healthy controls (HC). METHOD 75 HCs, 75 medication-naïve, and 45 medicated patients took part in this study. fNIRS signals during a verbal fluency task (VFT) were acquired using a 52-channel system and relative oxy-hemoglobin changes in the prefrontal cortex were quantified. RESULTS Prefrontal cortex hemodynamic response was lower in patients than HCs (p ≤ ≤.001). Medication-naïve and medicated patients did not differ in hemodynamic response or symptom severity (p > .05). fNIRS measurements were not associated with any clinical variables (p > .05). 75.8% patients and 76% HCs were correctly classified using hemodynamic response. CONCLUSION fNIRS may be a potential diagnostic tool for adult ADHD. These findings need to be replicated in larger validation studies.

Abstract
[Purpose] Humans keep their trunks vertical while walking. This defining characteristic is known as upright bipedalism. Research on the neural control of locomotion indicates that not only subcortical structures, but also the cerebral cortex, especially the supplementary motor area (SMA), is involved in locomotion. A previous study suggested that SMA may contribute to truncal upright posture-control during walking. Trunk Solution® (TS) is a trunk orthosis designed to support the trunk in decreasing the low back load. We hypothesized that the trunk orthosis might reduce the burden of truncal control on the SMA. The objective of this study was, therefore, to determine the effect of trunk orthosis on the SMA during walking. [Participants and Methods] Thirteen healthy participants were enrolled in the study. We measured the hemodynamics of the SMA during walking with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The participants performed two gait tasks on a treadmill: (A) independent gait (usual gait) and (B) supported gait while wearing the TS. [Results] During (A) independent gait, the hemodynamics of the SMA exhibited no significant changes. During (B) gait with truncal support, the SMA hemodynamics decreased significantly. [Conclusion] TS may reduce the burden of truncal control on the SMA during walking.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore whether functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) can aid in the early detection and diagnosis of postpartum depression. METHODS The study was a cross-sectional survey that invited all women who sought postpartum health examination 42 days after childbirth between August 2020 and January 2021. Personal information, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and well as fNIRS results were collected. RESULTS In all, 109 individuals agreed to participate and completed the examination in its entirety. The variance in integral and centroid values was not statistically significant across different subgroups of depression (P > 0.05). The difference in diagnosis of postpartum major depression between EPDS and fNIRS was statistically significant (P < 0.001). fNIRS results in postpartum depression diagnosis were substantially associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (P = 0.027), the number of pregnancies (P = 0.001), and postpartum body mass index (P = 0.035). CONCLUSION fNIRS can provide an objective method for early detection and diagnosis of postpartum depression. Certain clinical conditions can have an effect on brain activity, which may result in postpartum depression. Additional high-quality study is required to establish strong evidence on the subject.

Abstract
The major problem of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for brain activity measurement during verbal fluency task is the overlapping forehead scalp blood flow (FBF) on the target cerebral blood flow (CBF). There could be among-individual differences in the influence of FBF on CBF. We investigated effects of FBF on CBF by comparing signals obtained through a laser Doppler flowmeter (LDF) and NIRS using the modified Beer-Lambert Law (MBLL). Among 25 healthy individuals, 7 participants showed a strong correlation between LDF and NIRS signals (rs >0.500). There were no significant differences according to age or sex. Subsequently, we applied the hemodynamic separation method to the values calculated using the MBLL (Δ[oxy-Hb]M): to separate the concentration of oxygenated hemoglobin in the forehead (Δ[oxy-Hb]F) and cerebral cortex (Δ[oxy-Hb]C). First, we found that the influence of Δ[oxy-Hb]F on Δ[oxy-Hb]C in the high rs group was almost twice as large as that in the low rs group. Second, presence of sex and age differences in the influence of Δ[oxy-Hb]F on Δ[oxy-Hb]C were suggested. Based on the results, we discuss the factors affecting FBF and the resulting variations in NIRS signals.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to evaluate portable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) device as an adjunct diagnostic tool in Vietnam to assess hemodynamics when people with schizophrenia and healthy controls performed cognitive tasks. METHODS One hundred fifty-seven participants were divided into schizophrenia (n = 110) and healthy controls group (n = 47), which were recruited by match of age, and gender. Hemodynamic responses in the frontal cortex were monitored with a 48-channel portable device during the Stroop Color-Word Test (SCWT) and Verbal Fluency Test (VFT). General linear model compared the differences in oxyhemoglobin (HbO2) levels between the two groups. The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) graph was generated for each neuroanatomical area. RESULTS People with schizophrenia did not show significant activation in the frontal lobe during the SCWT and VFT as compared to pre-task. During the VFT, the area under the ROC curve of the bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, bilateral orbitofrontal cortex, bilateral frontopolar prefrontal cortex, and bilateral ventrolateral prefrontal cortex were greater than 0.7 (p < 0.001). The area under the ROC curve (AUC) for the right orbitofrontal cortex was maximal during the VFT (AUC = 0.802, 95%CI = 0.731-0.872). The Youden's index reached a peak (0.57) at the optimal cut-point value (HbO2 cutoff <0.209 μmol/ml for schizophrenia) in which the sensitivity was 85%; specificity was 72%; positive predictive value (PPV) was 0.88; negative predictive value (NPV) was 0.68 and correct classification rate was 76%. DISCUSSION Assessing hemodynamics during VFT by portable fNIRS offers the potential as an adjunct diagnostic tool for schizophrenia in developing countries.

Abstract
Background Frontotemporal cortex dysfunction has been found to be associated with cognitive impairment in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ). In patients with adolescent-onset SCZ, a more serious type of SCZ with poorer functional outcome, cognitive impairment appeared to occur at an early stage of the disease. However, the characteristics of frontotemporal cortex involvement in adolescent patients with cognitive impairment are still unclear. In the present study, we aimed to illustrate the frontotemporal hemodynamic response during a cognitive task in adolescents with first-episode SCZ. Methods Adolescents with first-episode SCZ who were aged 12-17 and demographically matched healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. We used a 48-channel functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) system to record the concentration of oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) in the participants' frontotemporal area during a verbal fluency task (VFT) and analyzed its correlation with clinical characteristics. Results Data from 36 adolescents with SCZ and 38 HCs were included in the analyses. Significant differences were found between patients with SCZ and HCs in 24 channels, mainly covering the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, superior and middle temporal gyrus and frontopolar area. Adolescents with SCZ showed no increase of oxy-Hb concentration in most channels, while the VFT performance was comparable between the two groups. In SCZ, the intensity of activation was not associated with the severity of symptoms. Finally, receiver operating characteristic analysis indicated that the changes in oxy-Hb concentration could help distinguish the two groups. Conclusion Adolescents with first-episode SCZ showed atypical cortical activity in the frontotemporal area during the VFT, and fNIRS features might be more sensitive indicators in cognitive assessment, indicating that the characteristic hemodynamic response pattern might be potential imaging biomarkers for this population.

Abstract
Regulator of G-protein signalling (RGS) proteins inhibit signalling by G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). GPCRs mediate the functions of several important neurotransmitters and serve as targets of many anti-psychotics. RGS2, RGS4, RGS5 and RGS16 are located on chromosome 1q23.3-31, a locus found to be associated with schizophrenia. Although previous gene expression analysis detected down-regulation of RGS4 expression in brain samples of patients with schizophrenia, the results were not consistent. In the present study, we performed a systematic meta-analysis of differential RGS2, RGS4, RGS5 and RGS16 expression in Brodmann Area 10 (BA10) samples of patients with schizophrenia and from healthy controls. Two microarray datasets met the inclusion criteria (overall, 41 schizophrenia samples and 38 controls were analysed). RGS2 and RGS16 were found to be up-regulated in BA10 samples of individuals with schizophrenia, whereas no differential expression of RGS4 and RGS5 was detected. Analysis of dorso-lateral prefrontal cortex samples of the CommonMind Consortium (258 schizophrenia samples vs. 279 controls) further validated the results. Given their central role in inactivating G-protein-coupled signalling pathways, our results suggest that differential gene expression might lead to enhanced inactivation of G-protein signalling in schizophrenia. This, in turn, suggests that additional studies are needed to further explore the consequences of the differential expression we detected, this time at the protein and functional levels.

Abstract
Introduction Our present study set out to investigate the instant state of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in healthy subjects before and after placement in the -12°head-down tilt (HDT) position in order to explore the mechanism behind the low-dissipation optimization state of the PFC. Methods 40 young, right-handed healthy subjects (male: female = 20: 20) were enrolled in this study. Three resting state positions, 0°initial position, -12°HDT position, and 0°rest position were sequentially tested, each for 10 minutes. A continuous-wave functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) instrument was used to assess the resting state hemodynamic data of the PFC. After preprocessing the hemodynamics data, we evaluated changes in resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) level and beta values of PFC. The subjective visual analogue scale (VAS) was applied before and after the experiment. The presence of sleep changes or adverse reactions were also recorded. Results Pairwise comparisons of the concentrations of oxyhemoglobin (HbO), deoxyhemoglobin (HbR), and hemoglobin (HbT) revealed significant differences in the aforementioned positions. Specifically, the average rsFC of PFC showed a gradual increase throughout the whole process. In addition, based on graph theory, the topological properties of brain network, such as small-world network and nodal degree centrality were analyzed. The results show that global efficiency and small-world sigma (σ) value were differences between 0°initial and 0°rest. Discussion In this study, placement in the -12°HDT had a significant effect on PFC function, mainly manifested as self-inhibition, decreased concentration of HbO in the PFC, and improved rsFC, which may provide ideas to the understanding and explanation of neurological diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It can be difficult to differentiate psychiatric disorders from depressive states, with little knowledge on how to differentiate them. This study aimed to evaluate changes in brain activity during cognitive and emotional tasks in patients with depressive state to help with differential diagnoses. METHODS Sixty-two patients with depressive states [17 with adjustment disorder (AD), 27 with major depressive disorder (MDD), and 18 with bipolar disorder (BD)] and 34 healthy controls (HC) were recruited. We used a verbal fluency task (VFT) and emotional word tasks with happy and threat words. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy measured the relative change in oxygenated hemoglobin in the frontotemporal areas. RESULTS During the VFT, patients with AD or MDD showed significantly reduced activation in the bilateral frontotemporal region (all p < 0.01), whereas patients with BD demonstrated significantly reduced activation in the right frontotemporal areas compared to HC (p < 0.01). During the emotional words task with happy words, patients with MDD showed significantly increased activity in the frontopolar area compared to HC (p = 0.023). Binary logistic regression analysis showed that MDD or BD was significantly associated with brain activity during the happy word task. In distinguishing MDD or BD from HC, the happy words task performed equally well, with an area under the curve of 0.70. LIMITATIONS All study patients were taking psychotropic drugs. CONCLUSIONS Brain activation in response to a combination of cognitive or emotional stimuli could assist in distinguishing patients with depressive states from healthy controls.

Abstract
Suicide is a serious public health problem, and it is urgent to identify biomarkers associated with suicide to prevent it. We aimed to clarify the association across suicidal behavior, personality traits, and brain activation by emotional stimulation tasks using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in patients with mood disorders. 11 mood disorder patients with a history of suicide attempt (MDSA), 18 mood disorder patients with no history of suicide attempt (MDNSA), and 17 healthy individuals were studied. The MDSA patients showed significantly high impulsivity and hopeless compared to healthy subjects, great response to the thread word task in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) compared to MDNSA patients, and the significant correlation between the personality traits and brain activation. The MDNSA did not show the trend. The results suggest that the personality traits and the activation of OFC and DLPFC during the negative emotional cognitive stimuli is associated with suicidal behavior, indicating the findings are involved in the pathophysiology of suicidality in mood disorders.

Abstract
In this study, we aimed to differentiate between euthymic bipolar disorder (BD) patients and healthy controls (HC) based on frontal activity measured by fNIRS that were converted to spectrograms with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). And also, we investigated brain regions that cause this distinction. In total, 29 BD patients and 28 HCs were recruited. Their brain cortical activities were measured using fNIRS while performing letter versions of VFT. Each one of the 24 fNIRS channels was converted to a 2D spectrogram on which a CNN architecture was designed and utilized for classification. We found that our CNN algorithm using fNIRS activity during a VFT is able to differentiate subjects with BD from healthy controls with 90% accuracy, 80% sensitivity, and 100% specificity. Moreover, validation performance reached an AUC of 94%. From our individual channel analyses, we observed channels corresponding to the left inferior frontal gyrus (left-IFC), medial frontal cortex (MFC), right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), Broca area, and right premotor have considerable activity variation to distinguish patients from HC. fNIRS activity during VFT can be used as a potential marker to classify euthymic BD patients from HCs. Activity particularly in the MFC, left-IFC, Broca's area, and DLPFC have a considerable variation to distinguish patients from healthy controls.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prefrontal deficits in psychiatric disorders have been investigated using functional neuroimaging tools; however, no studies have tested the related characteristics across psychiatric disorders considering various demographic and clinical confounders. METHODS We analyzed 1558 functional brain measurements using a functional near-infrared spectroscopy during a verbal fluency task from 1200 participants with three disease spectra [196 schizophrenia, 189 bipolar disorder (BPD), and 394 major depressive disorder (MDD)] and 369 healthy controls along with demographic characteristics (age, gender, premorbid IQ, and handedness), task performance during the measurements, clinical assessments, and medication equivalent doses (chlorpromazine, diazepam, biperiden, and imipramine) in a consistent manner. The association between brain functions and demographic and clinical variables was tested using a general linear mixed model (GLMM). Then, the direction of relationship between brain activity and symptom severity, controlling for any other associations, was estimated using a model comparison of structural equation models (SEMs). RESULTS The GLMM showed a shared functional deficit of brain activity and a schizophrenia-specific delayed activity timing in the prefrontal cortex (false discovery rate-corrected p < 0.05). Comparison of SEMs showed that brain activity was associated with the global assessment of functioning scores in the left inferior frontal gyrus opercularis (IFGOp) in BPD group and the bilateral superior temporal gyrus and middle temporal gyrus, and the left superior frontal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus triangularis, and IFGOp in MDD group. CONCLUSION This cross-disease large-sample neuroimaging study with high-quality clinical data reveals a robust relationship between prefrontal function and behavioral outcomes across three major psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental condition characterized by instability in identity, interpersonal relationships, emotion regulation and impulsivity. These symptoms seem to be associated to specific brain alterations, which have been largely investigated. In particular, positron emission tomography (PET) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) have demonstrated abnormalities in brain metabolism and hemodynamics in BPD, specifically in the fronto-limbic system. However, the role of medications on brain metabolism and hemodynamics in BPD is still largely unknown. METHODS We conducted a search on PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science of PET and fNIRS studies exploring the effect of medications on brain metabolism and hemodynamics in BPD. A total of 10 studies met the inclusion criteria. RESULTS Overall, PET studies showed an effect of psychotropic agents on brain metabolism, especially in frontal and temporal areas. Also, higher metabolic rates in frontal areas were found to correlate with clinical improvements. In contrast, fNIRS investigations reported an inconclusive or absent effects on brain hemodynamics in BPD patients. LIMITATIONS The small sample size, the elevated percentage of women, the heterogeneity in pharmacological agents and the presence of comorbidities limit the conclusions of the present review. CONCLUSIONS Serotoninergic agents and second-generation antipsychotics produce changes in frontal and temporal metabolism in BPD, which appear to correlate with clinical improvements. Differently, brain hemodynamics do not seem to be significantly affected by the most commonly prescribed drugs in BPD, suggesting that the therapeutic actions of medications are not mediated by changes in neural hemodynamics.

Abstract
Background Treatment-resistant auditory verbal hallucinations (TRAVHs) might cause an increased risk of violence, suicide, and hospitalization in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ). Although neuroimaging studies have identified the neural correlation to the symptom of AVH, functional brain activity that correlates particularly in patients with TRAVH remains limited. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a portable and suitable measurement, particularly in exploring brain activation during related tasks. Hence, our researchers aimed to explore the differences in the cerebral hemodynamic function in SCZ-TRAVH, patients with schizophrenia without AVH (SCZ-nAVH), and healthy controls (HCs), to examine neural abnormalities associated more specifically with TRAVH. Methods A 52-channel functional near-infrared spectroscopy system was used to monitor hemodynamic changes in patients with SCZ-TRAVH (n = 38), patients with SCZ-nAVH (n = 35), and HC (n = 30) during a verbal fluency task (VFT). VFT performance, clinical history, and symptom severity were also noted. The original fNIRS data were analyzed using MATLAB to obtain the β values (the brain cortical activity response during the VFT task period); these were used to calculate Δβ (VFT β minus baseline β), which represents the degree of change in oxygenated hemoglobin caused by VFT task. Result Our results showed that there were significant differences in Δβ values among the three groups at 26 channels (ch4, ch13-15, 18, 22, ch25–29, 32, ch35–39, ch43–51, F = 1.70 to 19.10, p < 0.043, FDR-corrected) distributed over the prefrontal–temporal cortical regions. The further pairwise comparisons showed that the Δβ values of 24 channels (ch13–15, 18, 22, 25, ch26–29, ch35–39, ch43–49, ch50–51) were significantly lower in the SCZ group (SCZ-TRAVH and/or SCZ-nAVH) than in the HC group (p < 0.026, FDR-corrected). Additionally, the abnormal activation in the ch22 of right postcentral gyrus was correlated, in turn, with severity of TRAVH. Conclusion Our findings indicate that specific regions of the prefrontal cortex may be associated with TRAVH, which may have implications for early intervention for psychosis.

Abstract
Although the prevalence of cognitive impairment and depression is higher in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) than in the general population, the mechanism has not been fully examined and impact of catheter ablation (CA) of AF also remains unclear. Recently, the development of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has enabled noninvasive measurements of regional cerebral blood volume and brain activity, in terms of cerebral oxyhemoglobin in the cerebral cortex. We assessed brain activities by NIRS, depressive symptoms by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and cognitive function by Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). We then compared the results between AF patients (paroxysmal AF n = 18 and persistent AF n = 14) and control subjects (n = 29). Next, we also followed up persistent AF patients who kept sinus rhythm at 3 months after CA (n = 8) and measured their brain activities using NIRS, CES-D and MMSE after CA to investigate the associations of changes in brain activities with changes in both CES-D and MMSE. Our results showed that (1) frontal and temporal brain activities were lower in patients with persistent AF than both in control subjects and paroxysmal AF patients (P < 0.01), (2) frontal and temporal brain activities were improved in more than half of the persistent AF patients who kept sinus rhythm at 3 months after CA, especially in those who presented impaired brain activity before CA, and (3) improvement of frontal brain activity was associated with improvement of CES-D (R = − 0.793, P = 0.019), whereas improvement of temporal brain activity was associated with improvement of MMSE (R = 0.749, P = 0.033). NIRS measurement showed reduced frontal and temporal brain activities in the persistent AF patients, CA improved frontal and temporal brain activities in some of these patients, and associated with improvement of depressive state and/or improvement of cognitive function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given that major depressive disorder (MDD) is both biologically and clinically heterogeneous, a diagnostic system integrating neurobiological markers and clinical characteristics would allow for better diagnostic accuracy and, consequently, treatment efficacy. OBJECTIVE Our study aimed to evaluate the discriminative and predictive ability of unimodal, bimodal, and multimodal approaches in a total of seven machine learning (ML) models-clinical, demographic, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), combinations of two unimodal models, as well as a combination of all three-for MDD. METHODS We recruited 65 adults with MDD and 68 matched healthy controls, who provided both sociodemographic and clinical information, and completed the HAM-D questionnaire. They were also subject to fNIRS measurement when participating in the verbal fluency task. Using the nested cross validation procedure, the classification performance of each ML model was evaluated based on the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), balanced accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. RESULTS The multimodal ML model was able to distinguish between depressed patients and healthy controls with the highest balanced accuracy of 87.98 ± 8.84% (AUC = 0.92; 95% CI (0.84-0.99) when compared with the uni- and bi-modal models. CONCLUSIONS Our multimodal ML model demonstrated the highest diagnostic accuracy for MDD. This reinforces the biological and clinical heterogeneity of MDD and highlights the potential of this model to improve MDD diagnosis rates. Furthermore, this model is cost-effective and clinically applicable enough to be established as a robust diagnostic system for MDD based on patients' biosignatures.

Abstract
Previous studies using various brain imaging methods have reported prefrontal blood flow disturbances in psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia and major depressive disorder. In both disorders, alterations of the resting blood flow, in addition to that of the activation in response to task load, have been shown, but the results are not consistent. The present study aimed to examine the anterior prefrontal hemoglobin concentration at the resting state in schizophrenia and depression using near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy (NIR-TRS), which estimates the optical absorption coefficients and calculates the absolute concentrations of oxygenated (oxy-Hb), deoxygenated (deoxy-Hb), and total (total-Hb; sum of oxy-Hb and deoxy-Hb) hemoglobin. Their ratios to systemic blood hemoglobin concentration (blood-Hb) were also assessed. In agreement with our previous data, total-Hb and total-Hb/blood-Hb in schizophrenia were significantly lower. The present study further revealed that both oxy-Hb/blood-Hb and deoxy-Hb/blood-Hb in schizophrenia were reduced. In depression, total-Hb, total-Hb/blood-Hb, oxy-Hb, and oxy-Hb/blood-Hb were higher than in schizophrenia and were not different from the control. The oxygen saturation (oxy-Hb/total-Hb), in addition to the optical pathlengths, did not show group differences. Lowered oxy-Hb/blood-Hb and deoxy-Hb/blood-Hb together with unchanged oxygen saturation may indicate that the prefrontal blood volume is reduced in schizophrenia. The present findings suggest that NIR-TRS is useful in analyzing the hemodynamic aspects of prefrontal dysfunction in schizophrenia and differentiating schizophrenia from depression.

Abstract
AIM To longitudinally examine if the results of cognitive tasks or brain function during emotional or cognitive tasks can predict relapse in alcohol use disorder. METHODS We selected 41 patients with alcohol use disorder during hospitalization. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) measured the relative change in oxygenated hemoglobin in the frontotemporal areas during an emotional go/no-go task and verbal fluency task (VFT). They performed the N-back and risk-based decision-making tasks for determining working memory or risk-based decision-making. The presence of relapse 6 months following discharge was the primary outcome. RESULTS Twenty-four patients (21 men, three women) remained abstinent, whereas 17 (14 men, three women) relapsed. Compared with the abstinent group, those with relapse displayed significantly decreased activation in the right frontotemporal region during the emotional go/no-go task, significantly shorter reaction time to non-emotional stimuli, and greater risk preference in the risk-based decision-making task. In the abstinent group, we observed a negative correlation between oxygenated hemoglobin and the craving scale. A logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the risk of relapse increased with smaller oxygenated hemoglobin in the right frontotemporal region (odds ratio = 0.161, p = 0.013) and with greater gambling thoughts (odds ratio = 7.04, p = 0.033). CONCLUSION Decreased activation in the right frontotemporal region in response to an emotional stimulus and risk preference could predict relapse in alcohol use disorder.

Abstract
Informal Parkinson's disease (PD) caregivers are considered to experience high levels of caregiver burden, negatively affecting the health of caregivers. However, few studies explored the relationship between anxiety in caregiver burden and cognitive function in informal PD caregivers. Although, no study has even investigated the neural mechanisms underlying this connection. This study aimed to conduct comprehensive cognitive and clinical assessments and evaluate brain activity from task-based state and resting-state using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). A total of ten informal PD caregivers and 15 matched, healthy, non-caregivers were recruited. Comprehensive cognitive and clinical assessments were conducted to evaluate five cognitive domains and mental states. Neural activity induced by verbal fluency task (VFT) and brain connectivity during resting state were monitored, and their correlations with the neuropsychological and clinical tests were explored. Our results showed that compared to non-caregiver, an informal PD caregiver exhibited no difference in most cognitive domains of function but performed better in attentional function, along with higher levels of anxiety. Decreased activation over prefrontal regions during VFT and hypo-connectivity within the frontoparietal network (FPN) and between default mode network (DMN) and FPN in the resting state were confirmed in this study as a result of the negative effects of anxiety on the brain. Furthermore, Spearman's correlation found that neural activity in FPN during task-based state and resting state was negatively correlated with the severity of anxiety. These findings indicate that despite normal or even better cognitive function, informal PD caregivers have impaired brain function, and this deficit in neural activity was related to anxiety.

Abstract
Schizophrenia (SZ) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) share several epidemiological and clinical features, but the neurobiological substrates shared by these two diseases remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the similarities and differences in brain function between them using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Eventually, 130 SZ patients, 70 OCD and 75 normal controls (NCs) were enrolled. A 52-channel NIRS instrument was used to detect the concentration changes in oxygenated hemoglobin ([oxy-Hb]) during the verbal fluency task. Ten regions of interests (ROIs) were defined: the bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), frontopolar cortex (FPC), orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), inferior prefrontal gyrus (IFG) and temporal gyrus (TG). Through two different analysis strategies based on channels or ROIs, we compared the [oxy-Hb] changes in three groups by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc tests. Across 52 channels, compared to the NC group, both SZ and OCD groups exhibited reduced activity in 17 channels, including left FPC, left DLPFC, bilateral OFC, IFG, middle TG, supplementary motor cortex and Broca's area, while SZ showed lower activity in channel 35 (right OFC) than OCD patients. Across all ROIs, compared to the NC group, both SZ and OCD groups showed reduced activity in 7 ROIs, including left FPC, bilateral OFC, IFG and TG, while SZ showed lower activity in the right OFC than OCD group, which were almost consistent with the results based on channels. This study suggests SZ and OCD present with some similar neuropathological changes, while SZ shows more severe impairment in the right OFC than OCD.

Abstract
The diversity of cognitive task paradigms using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and the lack of theoretical explanations for these functional imaging atlases have greatly hindered the application of fNIRS in psychiatry. The fNIRS brain imaging based on multiple cognitive tasks could generally reflect the working patterns and neurovascular coupling changes in the prefrontal working memory network. By alternating the stimulation patterns of resting and task states, six typical symptom-related functional brain imaging waveforms related to psychiatric disorders are identified and three joint networks of the prefrontal working memory, namely, the attentional working memory primary coordination network, the perceptual content working memory secondary network, and the emotional-behavioral working memory executive network, are initially represented. This is the first attempt to characterize the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral regulation of the prefrontal working memory network using fNIRS, which may promote the application of fNIRS in clinical settings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Decision-making capacity for patients with psychiatric disorders is an important and controversial issue in clinical care settings. The aim of this study was to (1) evaluate the level of decision-making capacity of older institutionalized patients suffering from schizophrenia and (2) determine whether their diminished capacity is associated with specific aspects of cognitive impairment. METHODS Using a cross-sectional design, we recruited 48 older institutionalized patients (mean age ± standard deviation: 60.0 ± 14.0 years) who were diagnosed with schizophrenia. Participants underwent the assessments by the MacArthur Competence Assessment Tool for Treatment (MacCAT-T) and the Japanese version of the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (Japanese-BACS). RESULTS The understanding summary scores of the MacCAT were found to have a significant positive correlation with the attention and verbal fluency subscale scores of the Japanese-BACS and negative correlations with age and duration of illness. In addition, the appreciation and reasoning summary scores had a significant negative correlation with age. In a linear regression model with a stepwise selection procedure, age, sex, and verbal fluency subscale scores were associated with understanding summary scores. CONCLUSION The generally poor cognitive performance of inpatients with chronic schizophrenia indicated that the informed consent process for their treatment might pressure these patients on the basis of cognitive demands. It is necessary for psychiatrists to assess individual decision-making capacity and to increase their patients' involvement in the treatment process.

Abstract
Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) provides a direct and objective assessment of cerebral cortex function. It may be used to determine neurophysiological differences between psychiatric disorders with overlapping symptoms, such as major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). Therefore, this preliminary study aimed to compare fNIRS signals during the verbal fluency task (VFT) of English-speaking healthy controls (HC), patients with MDD and patients with BD. Fifteen HCs, 15 patients with MDD and 15 patients with BD were recruited. Groups were matched for age, gender, ethnicity and education. Relative oxy-haemoglobin and deoxy-haemoglobin changes in the frontotemporal cortex was monitored with a 52-channel fNIRS system. Integral values of the frontal and temporal regions were derived as a measure cortical haemodynamic response magnitude. Both patient groups had lower frontal and temporal region integral values than HCs, and patients with MDD had lower frontal region integral value than patients with BD. Moreover, patients could be differentiated from HCs using the frontal and temporal integral values, and patient groups could be differentiated using the frontal region integral values. VFT performance, clinical history and symptom severity were not associated with integral values. These results suggest that prefrontal cortex haemodynamic dysfunction occurs in mood disorders, and it is more extensive in MDD than BD. The fNIRS-VFT paradigm may be a potential tool for differentiating MDD from BD in clinical settings, and these findings need to be verified in a larger sample of English-speaking patients with mood disorders.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) are frequently comorbid with each other, and both associated with substantial cognitive impairments; however, it is still unclear whether their impairments are neurobiologically similar or distinct. This study aims to investigate the cognitive functions of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in patients with MDD and GAD during the verbal fluency task (VFT) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Fifty-two patients with MDD, fifty-one patients with GAD, fifty-two patients with the comorbidity of MDD and GAD (CMG), and forty-seven healthy controls (HC) participated in the study. Significant hypoactivation in the left ventrolateral and the left dorsolateral PFC was common in all patient groups when compared to HCs, suggesting a shared etiology. Furthermore, MDD patients showed significant hypoactivation at the right frontal pole cortex (FPoC) when compared to HCs and significant hypoactivation at the middle FPoC when compared to the CMG patients. Our work is the first fNIRS study to reveal the shared and unique neurobiological profiles of MDD, GAD and their comorbidity under the same standard experimentation condition, suggesting fNIRS holds promise as an adjutant to assist clinical diagnosis.

Abstract
Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a debilitating condition with a high disease burden and medical comorbidities. There are currently few to no validated biomarkers to guide the diagnosis and treatment of MDD. In the present study, we evaluated the differences between MDD patients and healthy controls (HCs) in terms of cortical haemodynamic responses during a verbal fluency test (VFT) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and serum amino acid profiles, and ascertained if these parameters were correlated with clinical characteristics. Methods: Twenty-five (25) patients with MDD and 25 age-, gender-, and ethnicity-matched HCs were recruited for the study. Real-time monitoring of the haemodynamic response during completion of a VFT was quantified using a 52-channel NIRS system. Serum samples were analysed and quantified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry for amino acid profiling. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to classify potential candidate biomarkers. Results: The MDD patients had lower prefrontal and temporal activation during completion of the VFT than HCs. The MDD patients had lower mean concentrations of oxy-Hb in the left orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), and lower serum histidine levels. When the oxy-haemoglobin response was combined with the histidine concentration, the sensitivity and specificity of results improved significantly from 66.7% to 73.3% and from 65.0% to 90.0% respectively, as compared to results based only on the NIRS response. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate the use of combination biomarkers to aid in the diagnosis of MDD. This technique could be a useful approach to detect MDD with greater precision, but additional studies are required to validate the methodology.

Abstract
In clinical settings, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with comorbid depression is often difficult to diagnose, and should be considered in treatment. However, to our knowledge, no functional imaging study has examined the difference between ASD adolescents with and without comorbid depression. We aimed to compare the characteristics and prefrontal brain function of ASD with and without depression in order to identify a biological marker that can be used to detect the difference. Twenty-eight drug-naïve adolescents with ASD (14 ASD with and 14 ASD without depression) and 14 age- and gender-matched adolescents with typical development were evaluated using several variables. These included intelligence quotient, autism quotient, depression severity using the Beck Depression Inventory 2nd edition (BDI-II), and level of social functioning using the Social Adaptation Self-evaluation Scale (SASS). In addition, frontotemporal hemodynamic responses during a verbal fluency task (VFT) were measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The ASD group, including both of the ASD with and ASD without depression groups, showed smaller hemodynamic responses than the typical development group in portions of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), bilateral ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) and anterior part of the temporal cortex (aTC) during the VFT. Moreover, the smaller hemodynamic responses in the right VLPFC during the VFT in the ASD group were associated with the worse BDI-II and SASS scores. Furthermore, the ASD with depression group showed smaller hemodynamic responses in the right VLPFC during the VFT than the ASD without depression group in a direct comparison. Adolescents with ASD showed reduced activation in broad frontotemporal regions during a cognitive task compared with those with typical development. More specifically, the right VLPFC activation reflected the level of self-estimated depression and social functioning in the ASD subjects, and could be used to discriminate between ASD adolescents with and without depression.

Abstract
Accessible neuroimaging tools that can identify specific frontal lobe dysfunction associated with psychiatric disorders could be useful for improving disease diagnosis and prognosis and treatment development. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), in conjunction with the verbal fluency test (VFT), has emerged as an inexpensive and convenient method for understanding psychiatric disorders. However, questions remain regarding the specificity and uniqueness of fNIRS measurements for different disorders and the soundness of the methods applied previously. To address these knowledge gaps, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of fNIRS studies using the VFT to probe psychiatric disorders. A literature search was conducted using PubMed and PsycINFO on October 27, 2020. Overall, 82% and 49% of the 121 included studies reported significantly reduced changes in oxyhemoglobin concentrations (HbO) and significantly fewer produced words during the VFT in psychiatric patients compared with healthy controls, respectively. For most psychiatric disorders, changes in HbO are more sensitive than changes in deoxyhemoglobin concentrations and VFT performance to detect psychopathologies. In addition, meta-analyses based on the proportion of channels that exhibited significant differences in HbO changes between patients and controls and on the effect sizes of group differences consistently showed that for major depression and schizophrenia, hypoactivation could be found across the frontotemporal regions, but its topographical distribution is disorder-specific. Thus, the fNIRS-VFT paradigm holds promise for understanding, detecting, and differentiating psychiatric disorders, and has the potential for developing accessible neuroimaging biomarkers for different psychiatric disorders. The findings are discussed with regard to the strengths and weaknesses of the applied methods, following by recommendations.

Abstract
The present study had three main aims: (1) to explore the possible relationships between the two dimensions of negative symptoms (NS) with the three frontal behavioral syndromes (dorsolateral, orbitofrontal and the anterior or mesial cingulate circuit) in patients with schizophrenia; (2) to determine the influence of sociodemographic and clinical variables on the severity of the two dimensions of NS (expressive deficits and disordered relationships/avolition); and (3) to explore the possible relationships between the two dimensions of NS and social functioning. We evaluated a group of 33 patients with schizophrenia with a predominance of NS using the self-reported version of the Frontal System Behavior scale. To quantify the severity of NS, the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS) scale was used. The results revealed that the two dimensions of NS correlate positively with the behavioral syndrome of dorsolateral prefrontal origin. Regarding the influence of sociodemographic and clinical variables, in patients with a long evolution the NS of the expressive deficits dimension were less severe than in patients with a short evolution. A negative correlation was found between the severity of NS of the disordered relationships/avolition dimension and perceived social functioning. Our results show the importance of differentiating between the two dimensions of NS to characterize better their possible frontal etiology and impact on clinical course and social functioning.

Abstract
Background: Post-stroke depression (PSD) is the most common mood disorder following stroke and is also the main factor that limits the recovery and rehabilitation of patients with stroke. The prevalence of PSD is ~30%. Since there is no gold standard for the diagnosis and evaluation of PSD, it is important to raise awareness of PSD and to establish methods for its evaluation, early diagnosis, and treatment. In the field of psychiatry, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has been used as a diagnostic tool for the measurement of oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb). This study aimed to assess whether fNIRS could be applied in the diagnosis and evaluation of PSD. Methods: We recruited 45 patients with stroke, who were admitted to Nagasaki Kita Hospital between May 2015 and April 2019. The 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD17), which is considered to be a useful screening and evaluation tool for PSD, was used for the assessment of patients after stroke; moreover, oxy-Hb was measured in the pre-frontal cortex. The subjects were divided into two groups: the depressed group (n = 13) and the non-depressed group (n = 32). We evaluated the correlation between the oxy-Hb integral values and HAMD17 scores. Results: We investigated the relationship between the oxy-Hb integral values and HAMD17 total scores, and found a negative correlation between them (ρ = −0.331, P < 0.005). There was a significant difference in the oxy-Hb integral values during the activation task period between the depressed and non-depressed groups (3.16 ± 2.7 and 1.71 ± 2.4, respectively; P = 0.040). The results indicated that the patients of the depressed group showed lower oxy-Hb integral values and lower activation in the frontal lobe in comparison with the patients of the non-depressed group. Conclusion: The present study highlights that the measurement of oxy-Hb by using fNIRS is a useful methodology for the diagnosis of PSD in patients after stroke.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with remitted major depressive disorder (rMDD) generally rely on maladaptive coping strategies for stressful situations. These maladaptive copings are associated with an elevated relapse risk of rMDD; however, their neural basis remains poorly understood. METHODS We enrolled (1) 45 patients with rMDD (17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale [HRSD17] total score ≤ 3) and (2) 56 healthy controls (HCs). Coping styles were measured using the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) according to three coping dimensions: avoidance-, emotion-, and task-oriented copings. The cognitive strategic processes of the prefrontal cortex were measured using a verbal fluency task (VFT). Furthermore, regional frontotemporal hemodynamic responses were monitored by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). RESULTS Patients with rMDD had significantly lower task-oriented coping scores and significantly higher avoidance- and emotion-oriented coping scores than HCs. Predominantly in the left frontotemporal region, patients with rMDD had lower frontotemporal hemodynamic responses during a VFT than HCs. Hemodynamic responses in the right inferior frontal gyrus of patients with rMDD were significantly and negatively associated with avoidance-oriented coping scores, but not of HCs. Conversely, those responses of HCs were significantly and positively associated with task-oriented coping scores, but not of patients with rMDD. DISCUSSION Alteration in the right inferior frontal cortex plays an important role in dysfunction to stress response in patients with rMDD. Differential functioning patterns of the right inferior frontal cortex associated with coping strategies may link to MDD recurrence vulnerability.

Abstract
Advances in neuroimaging have promised the development of specific and objective biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders. Recently, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has been used during cognitive tasks to measure cortical dysfunction associated with mental illnesses such as Schizophrenia (SCH), Major-Depressive disorder (MD) and Bipolar Disorder (BD). We investigated the ability of fNIRS as a clinically viable tool to successfully distinguish healthy individuals from those with major psychiatric disorders. 316 patients with major psychiatric disorders (198 SCH/54 MD/64 BP) and 101 healthy controls were included in this study. Changes in oxygenated-hemoglobin during a Chinese language verbal fluency test were measured using a 52-channel fNIRS machine over the bilateral temporal and frontal lobe areas. We evaluated the ability of two task-evoked features selected from prior studies the Integral and Centroid values, to identify individuals with major diagnoses. Both the integral value of frontal and centroid value of temporal showed sensitivity in classifying individuals with mental disorders from healthy controls. However, using a combined index featuring both the integral value and centroid value to differentiate psychiatric disorders from healthy controls with an AUC of 0.913, differentiate individuals with mood disorders from healthy controls showed an AUC of 0.899, while for schizophrenia the AUC was 0.737. Our data suggest that fNIRS can be used as a candidate biomarker during differential diagnosis individuals with mood or psychosis disorders and offer a step towards individualization of treatment.

Abstract
AIM A tic-related specifier is included in the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria to identify a clinically specific obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) subtype. The current study sought to evaluate hemodynamic changes during executive function tasks among OCD patients with and without a lifetime history of tic disorder (TD) and healthy controls, and to investigate the relation between brain activation and clinical variables in each group using structured equation modeling. METHODS Twenty-nine OCD patients diagnosed according to the DSM-IV-TR and 15 healthy controls were recruited. Patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of a lifetime history of TD (TD+, n = 11; TD-, n = 18). Prefrontal hemodynamic changes were measured using multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy during the Verbal Fluency Task, Trail-Making Task, and Tower of London (ToL) Task. RESULTS There were significant brain activation differences in the frontopolar cortex between OCD patients with and without TD during Verbal Fluency Task and ToL performance. Brain activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during the ToL Task in OCD patients with TD exerted a direct causal effect on the severity of compulsions. In addition, we detected a direct causal effect of the severity of obsessions in OCD patients without TD on brain activation in the DLPFC during the ToL Task. CONCLUSION Brain activation in the frontopolar cortex exhibits different hemodynamics depending on the task, and DLPFC function may play a different role in the neural basis of developing OCD symptoms between OCD patients with and without TD.

Abstract
Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a noninvasive optical brain-imaging technique that detects changes in hemoglobin concentration in the cerebral cortex. fNIRS devices are safe, silent, portable, robust against motion artifacts, and have good temporal resolution. fNIRS is reliable and trustworthy, as well as an alternative and a complement to other brain-imaging modalities, such as electroencephalography or functional magnetic resonance imaging. Given these advantages, fNIRS has become a well-established tool for neuroscience research, used not only for healthy cortical activity but also as a biomarker during clinical assessment in individuals with schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disease, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and cancer screening. Owing to its wide applicability, studies on fNIRS have increased exponentially over the last two decades. In this study, scientific publications indexed in the Web of Science databases were collected and a bibliometric-type methodology was developed. For this purpose, a comprehensive science mapping analysis, including top-ranked authors, journals, institutions, countries, and co-occurring keywords network, was conducted. From a total of 2310 eligible documents, 6028 authors and 531 journals published fNIRS-related papers, Fallgatter published the highest number of articles and was the most cited author. University of Tübingen in Germany has produced the most trending papers since 2000. USA was the most prolific country with the most active institutions, followed by China, Japan, Germany, and South Korea. The results also revealed global trends in emerging areas of research, such as neurodevelopment, aging, and cognitive and emotional assessment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Patients with major depressive disorder tend to exhibit poorer decision-making capacity than the general population, but neurobiological evidence is lacking. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy monitors changes in oxy-haemoglobin concentration in the cerebral cortex. It may provide an objective assessment of neurophysiological responses during decision-making processes. Thus, this study investigated the effect of major depressive disorder diagnosis and severity on prefrontal cortex activity during the Iowa gambling task. METHODS Right-handed healthy controls (n = 25) and patients with major depressive disorder (n = 25) were matched for age, gender, ethnicity and years of education in this cross-sectional study. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy signals and the responses made during a computerised Iowa gambling task were recorded. In addition, demographics, clinical history and symptom severity were noted. RESULTS Compared to healthy controls, patients with major depressive disorder had reduced haemodynamic response in several cortical regions of the frontal lobe (Hedge's g range from 0.71 to 1.52; p values range from ⩽0.001 to 0.041). Among patients, mean oxy-haemoglobin declined with major depressive disorder severity in the right orbitofrontal cortex (Pearson's r = -0.423; p = 0.024). CONCLUSION Haemodynamic dysfunction of the prefrontal cortex during decision-making processes is associated with major depressive disorder diagnosis and severity. These neurophysiological alterations may have a role in the decision-making capacity of patients with major depressive disorder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an emerging neuroimaging modality that provides a direct and quantitative assessment of cortical haemodynamic response during a cognitive task. It may be used to identify neurophysiological differences between psychiatric disorders with overlapping symptoms, such as bipolar disorder (BD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD). Hence, this preliminary study aimed to compare the cerebral haemodynamic function of healthy controls (HC), patients with BD and patients with BPD. METHODS Twenty-seven participants (9 HCs, 9 patients with BD and 9 patients with BPD) matched for age, gender, ethnicity and education were recruited. Relative oxy-haemoglobin and deoxy-haemoglobin changes in the frontotemporal cortex was monitored with a 52-channel fNIRS system during a verbal fluency task (VFT). VFT performance, clinical history and symptom severity were also noted. RESULTS Compared to HCs, both patient groups had lower mean oxy-haemoglobin in the frontotemporal cortex during the VFT. Moreover, mean oxy-haemoglobin in the left inferior frontal region is markedly lower in patients with BPD compared to patients with BD. Task performance, clinical history and symptom severity were not associated with mean oxy-haemoglobin levels. CONCLUSIONS Prefrontal cortex activity is disrupted in patients with BD and BPD, but it is more extensive in BPD. These results provide further neurophysiological evidence for the separation of BPD from the bipolar spectrum. fNIRS could be a potential tool for assessing the frontal lobe function of patients who present with symptoms that are common to BD and BPD.

Abstract
Results of the behavioral studies suggest that attachment styles may have an enduring effect upon theory of mind (ToM). However biological underpinnings of this relationship are unclear. Here, we compared securely and insecurely attached first grade university students (N = 56) in terms of cortical activity measured by 52 channel Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) during the Reading the Mind from the Eyes Test (RMET). The control condition involved gender identification via the same stimuli. We found that the ToM condition evoked higher activity than the control condition particularly in the right hemisphere. We observed higher activity during the ToM condition relative to the control condition in the secure group (SG), whereas the overall cortical activity evoked by the two conditions was indistinguishable in the insecure group (ISG). Higher activity was observed in channels corresponding to right superior temporal and adjacent parietal cortices in the SG relative to the ISG during the ToM condition. Dismissive attachment scores were negatively correlated with activity in channels that correspond to right superior temporal cortex. These results suggest that attachment styles do have an effect on representation of ToM in terms of cortical activity in late adolescence. Particularly, dismissive attachment is represented by lower activity in the right superior temporal cortex during ToM, which might be related to weaker social need and habitual unwillingness for closeness among this group of adolescents.

Abstract
Theory of Mind (ToM) deficits interfere in social cognitive functioning in schizophrenia (SCZ) and are increasingly recognized to do so in bipolar disorder (BD), however their clinical and neurobiological correlates remain unclear. This study represents the first direct comparison of subjects with SCZ (N = 26), BD (N = 26) and healthy controls (N = 33) in cortical activity during the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Task (RMET) using functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) with the control condition (CC) involving gender identification via the same stimuli. The three groups were compared with a comprehensive ToM battery and assessed in terms of the relationship of ToM performance with clinical symptoms, insight and functioning. The controls scored higher than the SCZ and BD groups in ToM assessments, with SCZ group showing the worse performance in terms of meta-representation and empathy. The SCZ group ToM scores inversely correlated with negative symptom severity and positively correlated with insight; BD group ToM scores negatively correlated with subclinical mania symptoms and projected functioning. Cortical activity was higher during the ToM condition compared to the CC in the pre-motor and supplementary-motor cortices, middle and superior temporal gyri, and the primary somatosensory cortex. Group x Condition interaction was detected whereby activity was higher during the ToM condition among controls with no detected difference between SCZ and BD groups. The results suggest that ToM is represented similarly in cortical activity in SCZ and BD compared to healthy controls pointing to possible neurobiological convergence of SCZ and BD in underlying impairments of social cognition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The cognitive and emotional vulnerability of individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and their response to repeated experiences of social rejection and social acceptance are important factors for the emergence and maintenance of symptoms of the disorder. Functional neuroimaging studies of SAD reveal hyperactivity in regions involved in the fear circuit such as amygdala, insula, anterior cingulate, and prefrontal cortices (PFC) in response to human faces with negative emotions. Observation of brain activity, however, involving studies of responses to standardized human interaction of social acceptance and social rejection have been lacking. METHODS We compared a group of index subjects with SAD (N = 22, mean age:26.3 ± 5.4, female/male: 7/15) (SADG) with a group of healthy controls (CG) (N = 21, mean age:28.7 ± 4.5, female/male: 14/7) in measures of cortical activity during standardized experiences of human interaction involving social acceptance (SA) and social rejection (SR) video-simulated handshaking tasks performed by real actors. In a third, control condition (CC), the subjects were expected to press a switch button in an equivalent space. Subjects with a concurrent mood episode were excluded and the severity of subclinical depressive symptoms was controlled. 52-channel functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to measure cortical activity. RESULTS Activity was higher in the SAD subjects compared to healthy controls, in particular in channels that project to middle and superior temporal gyri (STG), frontal eye fields (FEF) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in terms of both SA and SR conditions. Cortical activity during the CC was not different between the groups. Only in the SAD-group, activity in the pre-motor and supplementary motor cortices, inferior and middle temporal gyri and fronto-polar area was higher during the rejection condition than the other two conditions. Anxiety scores were correlated with activity in STG, DLPFC, FEF and premotor cortex, while avoidance scores were correlated with activity in STG and FEF. CONCLUSIONS SA and SR are represented differently in terms of cortical activity in SAD subjects compared to healthy controls. Higher activity in both social conditions in SAD subjects compared to controls may imply biological sensitivity to these experiences and may underscore the importance of increased cortical activity during social interaction experiences as a putative mediator of vulnerability to SAD. Higher cortical activity in the SADG may possibly indicate stronger need for inhibitory control mechanisms and higher recruitment of theory of mind functions during social stress. Higher activity during the SR compared to the SA condition in the SAD subjects may also suggest distinct processing of social cues, whether they involve acceptance or rejection.

Abstract
Backgrounds: Reduced brain cortical activity over the frontotemporal regions measured by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been reported in patients with first-episode schizophrenia (FES). This study aimed to differentiate between patients with FES and healthy controls (HCs) on basis of the frontotemporal activity measured by NIRS with a support vector machine (SVM) and deep neural network (DNN) classifier. In addition, we compared the accuracy of performance of SVM and DNN. Methods: In total, 33 FES patients and 34 HCs were recruited. Their brain cortical activities were measured using NIRS while performing letter and category versions of verbal fluency tests (VFTs). The integral and centroid values of brain cortical activity in the bilateral frontotemporal regions during the VFTs were selected as features in SVM and DNN classifier. Results: Compared to HCs, FES patients displayed reduced brain cortical activity over the bilateral frontotemporal regions during both types of VFTs. Regarding the classifier performance, SVM reached an accuracy of 68.6%, sensitivity of 70.1%, and specificity of 64.6%, while DNN reached an accuracy of 79.7%, sensitivity of 88.8%, and specificity of 74.9% in the classification of FES patients and HCs. Conclusions: Compared to findings of previous structural neuroimaging studies, we found that using DNN to measure the NIRS signals during the VFTs to differentiate between FES patients and HCs could achieve a higher accuracy, indicating that NIRS can be used as a potential marker to classify FES patients from HCs. Future additional independent datasets are needed to confirm the validity of our model.

Abstract
PURPOSE In clinical settings, diagnosing comorbid depression in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is often difficult. Neuroimaging studies have reported reduced activation of frontal and temporal regions during emotional face recognition task (EFRT) in ASD and depression. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has examined differences in frontotemporal activation during EFRT between ASD with and without comorbid depression. We aimed to compare the frontotemporal hemodynamic responses to the EFRT in ASD with and without depression and to find clues to help in discriminating the characteristics between them. PATIENTS AND METHODS In 24 drug-naïve young adults with ASD (12 with depression [ASD-Dep(+)] and 12 without depression [ASD-Dep(-)]) and 12 with typical development (TD), frontotemporal hemodynamic responses during an EFRT were measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). RESULTS The ASD groups showed reduced activation during EFRT than the TD group in the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC). Moreover, the ASD-Dep(+) group showed reduced activation during EFRT than the ASD-Dep(-) group in the right anterior temporal cortex (aTC), and reduced activation than the TD group in the left VLPFC. CONCLUSION The observed results might reflect reduced regional activation in ASD and ASD with comorbid depression.

Abstract
Catatonia is a syndrome that manifests in patients with mental disorders and general medical conditions. However, functional changes to the brain that cause catatonia remain unknown. In the present study, we used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to assess spontaneous hemodynamic activities in the brain at the times of onset and resolution of catatonic symptoms in patients with catatonia. We used 22-channel and 49-channel fNIRS to examine hemodynamic activities in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), and both frontal and parietal cortices, respectively. A total of ten patients who were diagnosed with catatonia were included in the study. Resting state measurements were taken for five minutes at the time of the onset and resolution of catatonic symptoms. Analyses were performed for the prefrontal region and the motor cortex within the parietal-frontal region of the brain. Functional connectivity between the cerebral hemispheres was evaluated systematically based on spontaneous oscillation of Δ[HbO2]. In the PFC, the resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) was significantly lower in the catatonic state than in the eyes-closed non-catatonic state (p = 0.047). The study demonstrated that the RSFC in the PFC, measured using fNIRS, may be an objective indicator of the change in catatonic symptoms.

Abstract
Background Patients with psychosis often present significant neurocognitive deficits, with executive function deficits (EEFF) being one of the most relevant cognitive impairments with the greatest impact on the functioning of their daily lives. However, although various findings of executive involvement were reported, it is not entirely clear whether there is a differential pattern of involvement according to the clinical symptoms or the deficits occur in all or only in some subcomponents of EEFF. Objective The present study had a double objective: to study the specific deficits in the cool and hot EEFF in a group of psychotic patients with a predominance of negative symptoms; and determine the possible associations between the performance of the patients in the cool an hot EEFF tasks with the negative symptoms, and with the behavioral alterations associated with the dysexecutive syndrome. Method 66 participants, 33 psychotic patients with a predominance of negative symptoms and 33 healthy control subjects matched in gender, age and educational level participated. Both groups were administered 4 cool EEFF tasks (coding/maintenance and updating of information in working memory, ability to change the mental set and planning), and 3 hot EEFF tasks (decision making in situations of uncertainty, recognition of emotions through facial expressions and theory of mind). In the group of patients, the Negative symptoms were evaluated through the Scale for the Evaluation of Negative Symptoms (SANS), and the behavioral alterations associated with dysexecutive syndrome through the subscale of "Executive Dysfunction" of the Frontal Systems Behavior Scale. Results Patients performed worse on three cool EEFF tasks and on two of the hot EEFF tasks. Additionally, we found a correlation between the SANS score and the "executive dysfunction" subscale, with the cold EEFF task that measures planning. Conclusion Our findings showed that in psychotic patients with a predominance of negative symptoms, both, the cognitive (cool) and emotional (hot) components of executive functions are affected. The results reinforce the need for a cognitive rehabilitation treatment of the executive components of the working memory and of those more socio-emotional aspects.

Abstract
Suicide is a major cause of death in patients with schizophrenia, particularly among those with recent disease onset. Although brain imaging studies have identified the neuroanatomical correlates of suicidal behavior, functional brain activity correlates particularly in patients with recent-onset schizophrenia (ROSZ) remain unknown. Using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) recording with a high-density coverage of the prefrontal area, we investigated whether prefrontal activity is altered in patients with ROSZ having a history of suicide attempts. A 52-channel NIRS system was used to examine hemodynamic changes in patients with ROSZ that had a history of suicide attempts (n = 24) or that lacked such a history (n = 62), and age- and sex-matched healthy controls (n = 119), during a block-design letter fluency task (LFT). Patients with a history of suicide attempts exhibited decreased activation in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex compared with those without such a history. Our findings indicate that specific regions of the prefrontal cortex may be associated with suicidal attempts, which may have implications for early intervention for psychosis.
