Fluorescence spectroscopy and parallel factor analysis as a dissolved organic monitoring tool to assess treatment performance in drinking water trains

Molecular transformation of dissolved organic matter in manganese ore-mediated constructed wetlands for fresh leachate treatment

The organic matter (OM) and nitrogen in Fresh leachate (FL) from waste compression sites pose environmental and health risks. Even though the constructed wetland (CW) can efficiently remove these pollutants, the molecular-level transformations of dissolved OM (DOM) in FL remain uncertain. This study reports the molecular dynamics of DOM and nitrogen removal during FL treatment in CWs. Two lab-scale vertical-flow CW systems were employed: one using only sand as substrates (act as a control, CW-C) and the other employing an equal mixture of manganese ore powder and sand (experimental, CW-M). Over 488 days of operation, CW-M exhibited significantly higher removal rates for chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), and dissolved organic matter (represented by dissolved organic carbon, DOC) at 98.2 ± 2.5%, 99.2 ± 1.4%, and 97.9 ± 1.9%, respectively, in contrast to CW-C (92.8 ± 6.8%, 77.1 ± 28.1%, and 74.7 ± 9.5%). The three-dimensional fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) analyses unveiled that the influent DOM was predominantly composed of readily biodegradable protein-like substances with high carbon content and low unsaturation. Throughout treatment, it led to the degradation of low O/C and high H/C compounds, resulting in the formation of DOM with higher unsaturation and aromaticity, resembling humic-like substances. CW-M showcased a distinct DOM composition, characterized by lower carbon content yet higher unsaturation and aromaticity than CW-C. The study also identified the presence of Gammaproteobacteria, reported as Mn-oxidizing bacteria with significantly higher abundance in the upper and middle layers of CW-M, facilitating manganese cycling and improving DOM removal. Key pathways contributing to DOM removal encompassed adsorption, catalytic oxidation by manganese oxides, and microbial degradation. This study offers novel insights into DOM transformation and removal from FL during CW treatment, which will facilitate better design and enhanced performance.

Tracking the changes of dissolved organic matter throughout the city water supply system with optical indices

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is important in determining the drinking water treatment and the supplied water quality. However, a comprehensive DOM study for the whole water supply system is lacking and the potential effects of secondary water supply are largely unknown. This was studied using dissolved organic carbon (DOC), absorption spectroscopy, and fluorescence excitation-emission matrices-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC). Four fluorescent components were identified, including humic-like C1-C2, tryptophan-like C3, and tyrosine-like C4. In the drinking water treatment plants, the advanced treatment using ozone and biological activated carbon (O3-BAC) was more effective in removing DOC than the conventional process, with the removals of C1 and C3 improved by 17.7%-25.1% and 19.2%-27.0%. The absorption coefficient and C1-C4 correlated significantly with DOC in water treatments, suggesting that absorption and fluorescence could effectively track the changes in bulk DOM. DOM generally remained stable in each drinking water distribution system, suggesting the importance of the treated water quality in determining that of the corresponding network. The optical indices changed notably between distribution networks of different treatment plants, which enabled the identification of changing water sources. A comparison of DOM in the direct and secondary water supplies suggested limited impacts of secondary water supply, although the changes in organic carbon and absorption indices were detected in some locations. These results have implications for better understanding the changes of DOM in the whole water supply system to help ensure the supplied water quality.

UV/persulfate processes for the removal of total organic carbon from coagulation-treated industrial wastewaters

Sulfate radical-based oxidation processes were investigated to understand the relationship between persulfate (PS) consumption and total organic carbon (TOC) removal from industrial wastewater under various PS concentrations. First, the degradation and mineralization of Bisphenol A (BPA) (initial concentration: 11 mg/L) were investigated in ultraviolet (UV)/PS systems. Complete degradation was achieved within 30 min of UV irradiation, and 41%-72% TOC removal was achieved at PS concentrations of 200 and 400 mg/L. The consumed concentration of S2O82- and generated concentration of SO42- increased gradually to similar levels. The ratio of the PS consumption to TOC removal based on the mass concentration (mg/L) was 14.5 and 23.2 at 180 min for 200 and 400 mg/L of S2O82-, respectively. Three types of coagulation-treated industrial wastewater from metal-processing, food-processing, and adhesive-producing plants were obtained, and TOC removal was analyzed using the same UV/PS systems (initial TOC concentration: 100 mg/L). The TOC removal rates ranged from 16.9% to 94.4% after 180 min of UV irradiation at PS concentrations of 1,000, 2,000, 4,000, and 8,000 mg S2O82-/L. Despite the higher TOC removal at higher PS concentrations, the PS activation efficiency decreased significantly as the PS concentration increased. Only approximately 30%-40% activation efficiency was achieved at a PS concentration of 8,000 mg/L. In this study, the ratio of PS consumption to TOC removal ranged from 20.6 to 43.9.

Characterization of DOM released from bacteria in response to chlorine in water based on indicator bacteria E. coli

ABSTRACTIn this study, Escherichia coli (E. coli) was used as an indicator bacterium treated with five different concentrations of chlorine (0.1; 0.5; 1.0; 2.0, and 5.0 mg/L) and without chlorine (0.0 mg/L) to evaluate the changes in the DOM characteristics. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration initially increased along with the chlorine concentrations and decreased after 24 h (0.0 and 0.1 mg/L) and 168 h (0.5; 1.0; 2.0 and 5.0 mg/L). Ultra-violet absorbance at 260 nm (UV260) showed that the absorbance decreased for control without chlorine (0.0 mg/L) and 0.1 mg/L chlorine, while increased for other concentrations of chlorine within 120 h. The DOC and UV260 results indicated that the high concentrations of chlorine initiated high contents of DOM which contained more humic-like molecules than the DOM released from E. coli without chlorine. Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) analysis suggested that the DOM released from E. coli without chlorine enriched with protein-like substances, whereas the fulvic-like and humic-like substances more intensified in the DOM for the high concentrations of chlorine (>1.0 mg/L). The molecular weight distribution of DOM showed that the intensity of high molecular weight substances and polydispersity increased along with chlorine concentration and contact time, whereas the low molecular weight substances were relatively higher in the DOM for control without chlorine. The obtained results of this study would be useful for a better understanding of the variation of DOM during treatment and could be used as an important reference for optimizing the operation condition of the water treatment plants.

Fluorescence spectroscopy in the detection and management of disinfection by-product precursors in drinking water treatment processes: A review

Monitoring and prevention of the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) is paramount in drinking water treatment plants (DWTP) to ensure human health safety. This review provides an overview of how fluorescence techniques are developed to predict DBP formation and to evaluate the reduction of fluorescence components and DBPs following individual DWTP processes. Evidence has shown that common DBPs, nitrogenous DBPs and specific emerging DBPs exhibit positive linear relationships with terrestrial, anthropogenic, tryptophan-like, and eutrophic humic-like fluorescence. Due to the interrelationships of both regulated and emerging DBP types with fluorescence components, the limitations arise when attempting to predict emerging DBPs solely through linear relationships. Monitoring the reduction of DBP precursors after each treatment process can be achieved by studying the relationship between fluorescence components and DBPs. During the coagulation process, highest reduction rates are observed for terrestrial humic-like fluorescence. Advanced treatments such as granular, powdered, silver-impregnated activated carbon, magnetic ion exchange resins, and reverse osmosis, have revealed a significant reduction of fluorescent DBP precursors, ranging from 53% to 100%. During chlorination, the reduction rate follows the order: terrestrial humic-like > microbial humic-like > protein/tryptophan-like fluorescence. This review provides insights into the reduction of fluorescence signatures following individual DWTP processes, which offers information regarding DBP formation. These insights could assist in optimizing the treatment process to more effectively manage DBP formation. For the identification of emerging DBP generation, the utilization of advanced models is imperative to precisely predict emerging DBPs and to more accurately trace DBP precursors within DWTPs.

Iron-Nitrogen Amendment Reduced Perfluoroalkyl Acids' Phyto-Uptake in the Wheat-Soil Ecosystem: Contributions of Dissolved Organic Matters in Soil Solution and Root Extracellular Polymeric Substances

Understanding the mechanisms underlying perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) translocation, distribution, and accumulation in wheat-soil ecosystems is essential for agricultural soil pollution control and crop ecological risk assessment. This study systematically investigated the translocation of 13 PFAAs under different iron and nitrogen fertilization conditions in a wheat-soil ecosystem. Short-chain PFAAs including PFBA, PFPeA, PFHxA, and PFBS mostly accumulated in soil solution (10.43-55.33%) and soluble extracellular polymeric substances (S-EPS) (11.39-14.77%) by the adsorption to amino- (-NH2) and hydroxyl (-OH) groups in dissolved organic matter (DOM). Other PFAAs with longer carbon chain lengths were mostly distributed on the soil particle surface by hydrophobic actions (74.63-94.24%). Iron-nitrogen amendments triggered (p < 0.05) soil iron-nitrogen cycling, rhizospheric reactive oxygen species fluctuations, and the concentration increases of -NH2 and -OH in the DOM structure. Thus, the accumulation capacity of PFAAs in soil solution and root EPS was increased. In sum, PFAAs' translocation from soil particles to wheat root was synergistically reduced by iron and nitrogen fertilization through increased adsorption of soil particles (p < 0.05) and the retention of soil solution and root EPSs. This study highlights the potential of iron-nitrogen amendments in decreasing the crop ecological risks to PFAAs' pollution.

Fluorescence-based indicators predict the performance of conventional drinking water treatment processes: Evaluation based on the changes in the compositions of dissolved organic matter

This study investigated the treatability of dissolved organic matter (DOM) by the selected lab-scale drinking water treatment processes using fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) analysis. The fluorescence ratio Peak 3/Peak 2 was established from well-defined fluorescence peak intensity of humic-like components (Ex/Em: 225 nm/425 nm) and protein-like components (Ex/Em: 230 nm/345 nm). Peak 3/Peak 2 predicted the aromatic characteristics of DOM and their origins in the different natural surface water feeding the different drinking water treatment plants. The drinking water treatment processes confirmed the treatability of DOM using Peak 3/Peak 2 and was well-confirmed by specific UV₂₆₀ absorbance relative to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) (SUVA) and fluorescence-based indices. Peak 3/Peak 2 was demonstrated to have a strong correlation with SUVA and DOC removal for the water after treatment by coagulation, adsorption, and chlorination. Compared to the humification index and fluorescence index, Peak 3/Peak 2 is better for indicating the DOM composition in terms of treatability. These findings can broaden the use of fluorescence spectroscopy in water treatment applications, by developing the fluorescence ratio to evaluate the performance of drinking water treatment plants.

Characteristics of Dissolved Organic Matter Impacted by Different Land Use in Haihe River Watershed, China

It is important to explore characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the riverine system due to its critical role in the carbon cycle. This study investigated the distribution characteristics and sources of DOM based on excitation emission matrix three-dimensional fluorescence technology and parallel factor (EEM-PARAFAC) analysis at two rivers in northern China strongly impacted by human activities. The results show that the fluorescence intensity of terrestrial humic-like substances increased during summer in Haihe River. The intensity was significantly higher than in spring due to terrestrial detritus from runoff conveyance. The fluorescence intensity of protein-like substances in spring was the highest and decreased in summer. This feature of DOM in the Duliujian River was related to the increase in precipitation and surface runoff in the wet season and the rapid degradation of mixed DOM in the dry season. An analysis of HIX, BIX and FI showed a low degree of DOM humification and more endogenous contributions from microbial and phytoplankton degradation. Seasonal variations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and chromophoric DOM (CDOM, a335, thereinto C1) suggest that chromophores, particularly terrestrial substances, regulate the temporal patterns of DOM in the two rivers. Combined with the analysis of the proportion of land use types in riparian buffers, tillage had a great impact on DOM content and hydrophobicity in Haihe River watershed. Domestic wastewater and industrial sewage discharge contribute more DOM to Duliujian River watershed, which was indicated by more abundant protein-like components (212.17 ± 94.63 QSU in Duliujian River;186.59 ± 238.72 QSU in Haihe River). This study highlights that different land use types resulted in distinctive sources and seasonal dynamics of DOM in rivers. Meanwhile, it should be considered that the estimation of carbon cycling should involve monitoring and evaluating anthropogenic inputs into rivers.

An approach to removing COD and BOD based on polycarbonate mixed matrix membranes that contain hydrous manganese oxide and silver nanoparticles: A novel application of artificial neural network based simulation in MATLAB

This study aimed to determine the efficacy of novel ultrafiltration and mixed matrix membrane (MMM) composed of hydrous manganese oxide (HMO) and silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) for the removal of biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). In the polycarbonate (PC) MMM, the weight percent of HMO and Ag-NP has been increased from 5% to 10%. A neural network (ANN) was used in this study to compare PC-HMO and Ag-NP. MMM was evaluated in combination with HMO and Ag-NP loadings in order to assess their effects on pure water flux, mean pore size, porosity, and efficacy in removing BOD and COD. HMO and Ag-NPs can decrease membrane porosity in the casting solution while increasing mean pore size. According to the study's findings, the artificial neural network model appears to be highly appropriate for predicting the removal of BOD and COD. To develop a successful model, a suitable input dataset was selected, which consisted of BOD and COD. An ideal model architecture for MMM was proposed based on an optimal number of hidden layers (2 layers) and neurons (5-8 neurons). Experiments and predicted data show a strong correlation between the developed models. BOD was predicted with an excellent R2 and a low root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.99 and 0.05%, respectively, while COD was predicted with an excellent R2 and a low RMSE of 0.99 and 0.09%, respectively. Based on the results, Ag-NP was found to be an excellent candidate for the preparation of MMMs as well as convenient for the removal of BOD and COD from polluted water sources.

DOM tracking and prediction of rural domestic sewage with UV-vis and EEM in the Yangtze River Delta, China

Compared with the urban sewage treatment plants, the operation of rural decentralized sewage facilities is trapped by the absence of professionals, thus having to be run dependently on the self-adaptive operation of the facilities, which makes timely monitoring particularly important. In this study, organic pollutants in rural domestic sewage and urban domestic sewage are analyzed using ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) and Fourier transform infrared reflectance (FTIR). Compared with the UV-vis absorption spectrum, EEM can not only make up the deficiency in the detection of some easily degradable organics in sewage, but also reveal the transformation of different components, thus indicating timely the treatment progress of rural sewage. Linear fitting of COD and spectrum shows that UV₂₅₄ combined with fluorescence excitation-emission at Ex/Em = 250/330 nm might be more suitable for the prediction of COD in rural water than the UV₂₅₄ alone. This is of great significance for guiding the self-adaptive operation of rural domestic sewage facilities, improving their stability and efficiency, so as to improve the rural living environment.

Characterization of DBP precursor removal by magnetic ion exchange resin using spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry

The characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) play an important role in the formation and speciation of carcinogenic disinfection byproducts. This study investigated changes in the characteristics and reactivity of DOM caused by the magnetic ion exchange resins, MIEX® DOC and MIEX® GOLD, using fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) with parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis and Orbitrap mass spectrometry (Orbitrap MS) with unknown screening analysis. A five-component PARAFAC model was developed and validated from 208 EEMs of raw and MIEX®-treated water samples. The two resins exhibited preferential removal of the humic-like components (67-87% removal) and successfully removed protein-like components to a lesser extent (5-61% removal). Unknown screening analysis indicated removal of most condensed aromatic structures and lignin-like features that had high O/C values and refractory characteristics of lipid-like features by MIEX® treatments. MIEX® preferentially removed DOM molecules with more oxidized and shorter CH₂ chains. The two resins had similar performance in trihalomethanes formation potential removal, but MIEX® GOLD achieved greater haloacetonitriles formation potential removal owing to its larger pore opening. Over 100 CHOCl DBP features were commonly found in all the samples while tens of CHOCl DBPs were uniquely formed in the samples with and without pre-treatments by MIEX®. Treatments by MIEX® before chlorination resulted in more intermediate CHOCl DBPs formed after chlorination compared to chlorinated raw waters. By optical spectroscopic analysis together with Orbitrap MS molecular characterization, we were able to confirm both quantitative and qualitative changes in DOM properties by MIEX® treatment related to DBP formation.

Interactions between dissolved organic matter and perfluoroalkyl acids in natural rivers and lakes: A case study of the northwest of Taihu Lake Basin, China

Understanding the interactions between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) is essential for predicting the distribution, transport, and fate of PFAAs in aquatic environments. Based on field investigations in the northwest of Taihu Lake Basin combined with laboratory experiments, we obtained DOM and PFAA concentrations as well as compositions and investigated key factors of DOM affecting PFAA variability and capture of PFAAs by DOM. Results indicated that the total concentrations of PFAAs were 73.4-689 ng/L in surface water and that PFAAs were dominated by C3-7 perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid. The main components of DOM included tyrosine-, fulvic-, and tryptophan-like substances. The Mantel test revealed a significant positive correlation between DOM and PFAAs (P = 0.0001). Fulvic-like substances were identified as the most crucial factors affecting PFAA variability. The laboratory experiments revealed that DOM can spontaneously aggregate into a microgel. Furthermore, 19.1-50.9% of PFAAs, DOM characteristic peaks, and several metals (Ca, Mg, Cu, and Fe) can be removed during aggregation, indicating the capacity of DOM binding organic/inorganic substances. The fulvic-like substances were more effectively removed than the protein-like substances. The distribution coefficients of all PFAAs except perfluorohexanoic acid significantly correlated with their perfluorinated carbon numbers (r = 0.975, p<0.001). Our results provided insights into the interactions between DOM and PFAAs, improving the understanding of the distribution, transport, and fate of PFAAs in aquatic environments.

Insights into variations on dissolved organic matter of bauxite residue during soil-formation processes following 2-year column simulation

Bauxite residue, an industrial alkaline solid waste, has a low organic carbon content which hinders plant growth. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) drives many biogeochemical processes including carbon storage and soil formation in soils. Input of exogenous organic materials may provide organic carbon and accelerate soil formation processes in bauxite residue. However, the potential effects of ameliorants on the quantity and quality of DOM in bauxite residue are still poorly understood. Here, the integration of ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectra, fluorescence spectra, and parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis were used to investigate the vertical characteristics of DOM in bauxite residue treated by PV (the combined addition of 2% phosphogypsum and 4% vermicompost, w/w) and BS (6% w/w including 4% bagasse and 2% bran) with 2-year column experiments. The content of DOM in untreated residues ranged from 0.064 to 0.096 g/kg, whilst higher contents of DOM were observed in PV (0.13 g/kg) and BS (0.26 g/kg) treatment. Meanwhile, with the increase of residue depth, the aromaticity and hydrophobic components of DOM in residue decreased, which indicated that the degree of humification of the treated residues in the upper layer was higher than that in the lower layer. Compared with BR, BS and PV treatment accumulated the related content of fulvic acid-like substance from 36.14% to 71.33% and 74.86%, respectively. The incorporation of vermicompost and biosolids increased the content of humic-like substances, whilst decreasing the content of protein-like substances in the surface layer, which may be due to the enrichment of the microbial community. During soil formation processes, the application of organic amendments reduced both salinity and alkalinity, enhanced microbial community diversity, and changed the quantity and quality of DOM in bauxite residue. These findings improve our understanding of the dynamics of DOM and response of DOM to soil formation processes in bauxite residue.

Effect of the Recycling Process on Drinking Water Treatment: Evaluation Based on Fluorescence EEM Analysis Using the Peak-Picking Technique and Self-Organizing Map

The recycling process is applied in many water treatment plants (WTPs), although this process can lead to adverse effects. The effect of the recycling process on the characteristics of dissolved organic matter was evaluated based on a fluorescence excitation-emission matrix using the peak-picking technique and self-organizing map (SOM). In this study, an evaluation of two WTPs, one with and one without a recycling system, was carried out. Both WTPs show moderate efficiency during the coagulation–flocculation process in removing DOC, fulvic acid-like, humic acid-like, and tryptophan-like substances. The recycling process causes increased values of fulvic acid-like, humic acid-like, and tryptophan-like substances and specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA) after the filtration process of about 31.0%, 35.7%, 22.2%, and 6%, respectively. Meanwhile, the WTP without recycling showed a reduction in the level of fulvic acid-like, humic acid-like, and tryptophan-like substances and SUVA by 23.3%, 52.9%, 27.8%, and 21.1%, respectively. Moreover, SOM analysis based on the peak-picking technique can determine differences in sample clusters due to the recycling process.

Removal of disinfection by-product precursors in drinking water treatment processes: Is fluorescence parallel factor analysis a promising indicator?

This work investigated the removal efficiency of disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors by different drinking water treatment processes and evaluated the feasibility of using fluorescence components removal as an indicator. A four-component (including tryptophan-like, protein-bound, tyrosine-like, and humic-like components) parallel factor analysis model was developed basing on 288 fluorescence excitation-emission matrices. Among all treatment processes, coagulation-sedimentation process showed the best performance, with mean removal ratios of 30% in total fluorescence intensity and 31% in total formation potential (FP) of DBPs, respectively. It preferentially removed humic-like component C4 (43%). Advanced treatment processes were less effective in comparison. Ozone and biological activated carbon (BAC) combined process reduced 20% of total fluorescence intensity, while ultrafiltration process reduced < 3%. Ozonation and BAC filtration preferentially removed free amino acids (i.e., C1 and C3) and protein-bound (i.e., C2) components, with mean removal ratios of 12% and 17%, respectively. Significant correlations (p < 0.01, double-tailed) were observed between four fluorescence components removal and FPs reduction of three trihalomethanes, dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN), and 1,1-dichloropropanone (1,1-DCP). Specifically, the correlation coefficients for three trihalomethanes and 1,1-DCP followed the order of C4 > C1 > C2 > C3, while the order for DCAN was C2 > C4 > C1 > C3.

Fluorescence analysis of centralized water supply systems: Indications for rapid cross-connection detection and water quality safety guarantee

Better insight into non-potable reclaimed water and drinking water can produce more reliable risk assessment and help to achieve sustainable water reuse in the long-term. This study illustrates the effectiveness of fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) for rapid cross-connection detection. Based on samples collected from three different sites of China, it is identified that the overall fluorescence intensity was 6-31 times of reclaimed to drinking water in water samples at all FRI regions. This is shown to be highly sensitive over conventional water quality parameters. Furthermore, based on parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), humic acid and tryptophan are considered as the main components contributing to fluorescence both in secondary and tertiary effluents. Total fluorescence intensities as well as fluorescence peaks of EEM pairs were investigated. Under different mixing scenarios, it is found that the signal is distinguishable as low as 20% of reclaimed water. This study also offers possibility of exploring portable devices with identified fluorescence peaks in EEM regions for risk prevention and water quality monitoring at end user sites.

Spectroscopic fingerprinting of dissolved organic matter in a constructed wetland-reservoir ecosystem for source water improvement-a case study in Yanlong project, eastern China

The coupling between constructed wetlands and reservoir (CWs-R) afforded a novel ecosystem to improve the water quality and increase the emergency storage capacity of micro-polluted river drinking water source. In this study, spectroscopic characteristics of DOM in YL CWs-R ecosystem were first systematic studied based on a three-year field monitoring to investigate the chemical composition, sources and track the involved biogeochemical processes in the ecosystem. Three humic-like components (C1, C2, and C4, em >380 nm) and one protein-like component (C3, em < 380 nm) were identified by PARAFAC model. Significant spatiotemporal variations in concentration and composition of FDOM were observed in YL CWs-R ecosystem. The improved water transparency (SD) and, the increased hydraulic retention time (HRT) along YL CWs-R ecosystem enhance photochemical processes, leading to significant decreases in the intensities of humic-like components in effluent (P < 0.05) with lower degrees of aromaticity, molecular weights, and humification (decrease in HIX and increases in S_R and BIX). In contrast, no significant spatial difference was observed for protein-like component (P > 0.05), which implies that the biodegradation and production of protein-like component may balance each other in the CWs-R ecosystem. The ecological pond unit plays a major role in the removal and transformation of DOM, especially in summer, while wetland purification unit contributes little to DOM reduction. In addition, the decay of aquatic macrophytes in wetland purification unit and the risk of algal bloom in the ecological pond unit might become important autochthonous sources of DOM, especially in summer and autumn. These findings are critical for further understanding the transformation processes of DOM in large-scale CWs-R ecosystems, and could provide important implications to improve sustainable safety of drinking water sources.

Effects of changing supply water quality on drinking water distribution networks: Changes in NOM optical properties, disinfection byproduct formation, and Mn deposition and release

Field studies were conducted in a Croatian city supplied by two distinct groundwater sources (referred to as A and B) to investigate both the effects of changing water source on the water quality in the drinking water supply system, as well as to further understand discoloration events that occurred in city locations that switched water from source A to B. The water treatment processes at site A were found to alter organic matter (OM) characteristics, removing humic substances while enhancing protein-derived (tryptophan) content. Although the humic-like component predominated in raw waters, microbially/protein-derived components were found to increase throughout the distribution networks of both systems. Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) such as total trihalomethane (TTHM) and total haloacetic acid (THAA) were prevalent in water distribution system (WDS)-A, which correlated with elevated OM content as well as re-chlorination with hypochlorite (NaOCl). Our field study revealed that THMs were more readily formed than HAAs during ClO₂ treatment. Unsurprisingly, chlorite concentrations were generally higher than chlorate concentrations during ClO₂ treatment, whereas (secondary) NaOCl disinfection contributed to higher chlorate production. Principal component analysis indicated that variable pH values and humic-like OM could affect Mn, As and Al concentrations at the consumer's tap. Our results suggested that although Mn concentrations complied with regulations at WDS-B and were below 50 μg/L after disinfection, Mn was oxidized and formed particulate Mn oxides capable of causing discoloration events depending on prevailing network physico-chemical and hydraulic conditions. Aluminium also appears to be released during hydraulic disturbances from extensive deposits within the network. Thermodynamic calculations showed that Mn-oxidation was strongly dependent upon the ORP, and to lesser extent the pH value. Collectively, our results confirm that ensuring the provision of safe drinking waters to consumers requires an understanding of water quality across entire distribution networks in addition to any routine post-treatment monitoring.

Monitoring dissolved organic matter in wastewater and drinking water treatments using spectroscopic analysis and ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a critical role in determining the quality of wastewater and the safety of drinking water. This is the first review to compare two types of popular DOM monitoring techniques, including absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) coupled with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) vs. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS), for the applications in wastewater and drinking water treatments. The optical techniques provide a series of indices for tracking the quantity and quality of chromophoric and fluorescent DOM, while FT-ICR-MS is capable of identifying thousands of DOM compounds in wastewater and drinking water at the molecule level. Both types of monitoring techniques are increasingly used in studying DOM in wastewater and drinking water treatments. They provide valuable insights into the variability of DOM composition in wastewater and drinking water. The complexity and diversity of DOM highlight the challenges for effective water treatments. Different effects of various treatment processes on DOM are also assessed, which indicates that the information on DOM composition and its removal is key to optimize the treatment processes. Considering notable progress in advanced treatment processes and novel materials for removing DOM, it is important to continuously utilize these powerful monitoring tools for assessing the responses of different DOM constituents to a series of treatment processes, which can achieve an effective removal of DOM and the quality of treated water.

Disinfection by-products in Croatian drinking water supplies with special emphasis on the water supply network in the city of Zagreb

The occurrence of disinfection by-products (DBPs) was investigated in 48 drinking water systems across Croatia. Eleven DBPs were studied: chlorite (ClO₂^-), chlorate (ClO₃^-), four trihalomethanes (THMs), and five haloacetic acids (HAAs). Furthermore, an intensive sampling program was conducted in the distribution system in the city of Zagreb where, aside from DBP analyses, natural organic matter (NOM) was characterized using fluorescence spectroscopy. In the drinking waters examined across Croatia, DBP values were found in the range from 0.7 μg/L to 32.8 μg/L for THMs, below LOQ to 17.2 μg/L for HAAs (primarily di- and trichloroacetic acids), below LOQ to 720 μg/L for ClO₂^- and below LOQ to 431 μg/L for ClO₃^-. The results obtained showed higher chlorite concentrations in the systems treated with hypochlorite compared to systems treated with chlorine dioxide. DBPs in the Zagreb distribution network were generally low (the average values were below 6 μg/L and 2 μg/L for total THM and total HAA respectively). In contrast to our observations throughout Croatia, dibromoacetic acid (DBAA) was found to be the predominant HAA within Zagreb, most likely due to the degradation of chlorinated carboxylates (di-/tri-chloroacetic) in the network. Characterization of NOM by Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC) fluorescence spectroscopy across the Zagreb network showed distinct temporal variations arising from groundwater inputs, as evident from variable humic-, tyrosine-, and tryptophan-like peaks. Statistical correlations between fluorescence data and DBPs highlight its potential for monitoring the presence of DBPs in distribution networks.

The ultraviolet-visible absorbance and fluorescence characterization of dissolved organic matter derived from the leaf litter of Populus simonii, Artemisia desertorum, Salix cheilophila, and Populus tomentosa

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from leaf litter plays an important role in maintaining carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) circulation between soils and plants, energy flow, and signaling pathways for plant-microbe interactions of terrestrial ecosystem. In this study, four DOM samples extracted with a 40:1 (v/w) water to sample ratio from the leaf litter of Populus simonii (S1), Artemisia desertorum (S2), Salix cheilophila (S3), and Populus tomentosa (S4) were investigated using the technologies of ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy. Results showed that the electricity (EC) values of four DOM extracts were significantly different due to the different composition and salt content of each plant. The values of chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and the sum of values of all peaks' intensities divided by DOC (FI) indicated the higher contents of organic matter in the acid DOM extracts from S1, S2, and S3 (sand-fixing plants) than the neutral DOM extracted from S4. The absorbance shoulder between 250 and 285 nm in the UV-Vis spectra and EEM fluorescence spectra of each sample suggested the presence of many different chromophores such as aromatic or phenolic compounds in plant DOM. According to fluorescence regional integration (FRI) and peak picking results, the content of protein-like materials was higher than that of humic-like substances in DOM from S1, S2, and S3 while the opposite phenomena occurred in DOM from S4. Hence, the physicochemical and fluorescence characterization of DOM extracted from the genus Populus of the family Salicaceae S1 and S4 growing under different edaphic and climatic conditions changed much. The findings would be of great significance to understand the origin, composition, dynamics, and biotransformation of DOM in soils formed in different climatic environments.

Seasonal occurrence of N-nitrosamines and their association with dissolved organic matter in full-scale drinking water systems: Determination by LC-MS and EEM-PARAFAC

N-nitrosamines have been identified as emerging contaminants with tremendous carcinogenic potential for human beings. This study examined the seasonal changes in the occurrence of N-nitrosamines and N-nitrosodimethylamine formation potential (NDMA-FP) in drinking water resources and potable water from 10 drinking water treatment plants in a southern city of China. The changes in N-nitrosamines are well correlated with dissolved organic matter (DOM), particularly fluorophores, which were measured and compared between traditional fluorescence indices and excitation-emission matrix coupled with parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC). Four of N-nitrosamine species including N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), N-Nitrosodibutylamine (NDBA), N-Nitrosopyrrolidine (NPYR), and N-Nitrosodiphenylamine (NDPhA) are found to be abundant compounds with an average of 29.5% (26.7%), 20.0% (25.2%), 18.9% (16.0%), and 9.0% (9.9%) in the source (and treated) water, respectively. The sum of N-nitrosamines concentration is recorded to be low in the wet season (July-September), whereas the dry season (October-December) provided opposite impacts. EEM-PARAFAC modeling indicated the predominance of humic-like component (C1) in the wet season while in the dry season the water was dominant in protein-like component (C2). All the N-nitrosamines excluding NDPhA and N-Nitrosomorpholine (NMOR) showed a strong association with protein-like component (C2). In contrast, humic-like C1, which was directly influenced by rainfall, was found to be a suitable proxy for NMOR and NDPhA. The results of this study are valuable to understand the correlation between different N-nitrosamines and DOM through adopting fluorescence signatures.

Exploring the relative changes in dissolved organic matter for assessing the water quality of full-scale drinking water treatment plants using a fluorescence ratio approach

This study aims to extend and demonstrate the application of fluorescence spectroscopy for monitoring the water quality of three differently operated full-scale drinking water treatment plants located in the Shenzhen city (China). A ratio of fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM), which describes relative changes in humic-like to protein-like fluorescence, was used to explain mechanisms behind the physicochemical processes. The fluorescence components obtained through individual and combined parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) modeling revealed the presence of humic-like (C1) and protein-like (C2) structures in the DOM. The C1/C2 ratio provided a direct relationship between the seasonal variations and DOM composition. Wet season generated DOM enriched with humic-like fluorescence, while dry season caused a higher release of protein-like fluorescence. The fluorescence ratio presented unique patterns of DOM in treatment trains. The chemical pretreatment and disinfection unit processes showed a higher tendency to remove the humic-like fluorescence. However, the C1/C2 ratio increased during physical treatment processes such as coagulation-precipitation and sand filtration, indicating preferential removal of protein-like fluorescence. The DOM composition in influent directly (R² = 0.77) influenced the relative intensities of fluorescence components in the treated water. Compared to the dry season, the wet season caused significant changes in DOM composition and produced treated water enriched with humic-like fluorescence. This fluorescence ratio offers an approach to explore the role of different treatment units and determine the factors affecting the composition of DOM in the surface water and drinking water treatment plants.

Dissolved organic matter controls of arsenic bioavailability to bacteria

The presence of arsenic in irrigation and drinking waters is a threat to worldwide human health. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a ubiquitous and photoreactive sorbent of arsenic, capable of both suppressing and enhancing its mobility. Microbes can control the mobilization of mineral-bound arsenic, through redox processes thought to occur intracellularly. The role that DOM plays on the bioavailability of arsenic to microbes is often invoked but remains untested experimentally. Here, using a whole-cell biosensor, we tested the role of DOM on As(III) and As(V) bioavailability. Using cation amendments, we explored the nature of As-DOM interactions. We found As bioavailability to be dependent on [As]/[DOM] ratio and on the strength of As binding to DOM which varied as a function of time. We further tested the role of DOM on As(III) photooxidation and showed that As(III) photooxidation rate is limited by the strength of its interactions with DOM and sensitive to ionic competitive desorption. Our study demonstrates the dynamic control that photoreactive DOM poses on the bioavailability and reactivity of As in the environment and highlights the kinetic controls that DOM can possibly exert on As toxicity at various levels in foodwebs.

Formation and interdependence of disinfection byproducts during chlorination of natural organic matter in a conventional drinking water treatment plant

It is crucial to explore the source, formation process and interdependence of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) to reduce their risk on public health. In this investigation, a source water was chlorinated to evaluate the initial formation rates and the maximum yields of trichloromethane (TCM), dichloroacetic acid (DCAA), and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) based on a hyperbola model. The results showed that TCM achieved the highest initial formation rate and maximum theoretical concentration compared with DCAA and TCAA. The TCM yield can be used to forecast the yields of DCAA and TCAA throughout the whole reaction process, and the yields of chloral hydrate (CH), dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) and 1,1,1-trichloropropanone (1,1,1-TCP) within the initial reaction stage. Besides, the raw water, settled water and filtered water collected from a drinking water treatment plant were divided into five fractions, respectively, by ultrafiltration membranes to evaluate their DBP formation after chlorination. Compared with the medium molecular weight species, high and low molecular weight organic matters exhibited relatively high specific regulated and unregulated DBP yields (expressed as μg/mg C), respectively. Humic acid-like compositions predominantly contributed to regulated DBP yields, while soluble microbial by-product-like compounds preferentially generated DCAN. The correlation study revealed that the TCM could also serve as an indicator for the measured DBPs from chlorination of sample fractions with different molecular weight. Finally, it was found that the theoretical cytotoxicity was enhanced during chlorination of filtered water compared with chlorination of settled water.

Fluorescence characterization of organic matter and fouling: Case study in a full-scale reverse osmosis membrane treatment plant

Membranes used for water treatment are subject to organic fouling, caused by organic matter in source water. Characterizing organic matter has the potential to improve fouling prediction since the development of an organic fouling layer on the membrane is dependent on the specific characteristics of the organic matter. A field study was performed at a full-scale reverse osmosis water treatment plant that treats secondary wastewater effluent for industrial reuse at a power plant. Samples were collected at various points within the treatment process and were analyzed for turbidity, total organic carbon (TOC), conductivity, and fluorescence Excitation Emission Matrices (EEM). Parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) was used to generate representative fluorescence measurements of the organic matter. Results indicate that TOC and fluorescence measurements were effective in differentiating between two observed fouling periods at multiple locations within the treatment plant. However, none of the water quality measurements were effective in tracking treatability of organic matter throughout pretreatment. The results of this case study provide important information about the relationship between fluorescence NOM signals and membrane fouling that can be used in future online detection systems. PRACTITIONER POINTS: TOC and fluorescence measurements were effective in differentiating between the high fouling and low fouling periods. Water quality measurements were not effective in tracking changes in organic matter throughout pretreatment. Implementation of online fluorescence monitoring of fouling potential could be used for real-time process control.

Efficient nitrogen removal in separate coupled-system of anammox and sulfur autotrophic denitrification with a nitrification side-branch under substrate fluctuation

In order to achieve efficient nitrogen removal, a separate coupled-system of anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) and sulfur autotrophic denitrification (S⁰-SADN) was established. In this study, the operational feasibility and stability of the coupled-system under substrate fluctuations were investigated. Results showed that the coupled-system improved the total nitrogen removal efficiency (TNRE) to 99.15 ± 0.68%. The tryptophan-like substances in anammox effluent positively impacted the growth of the S⁰-SADN biofilm. This positive cooperativity boosted the S⁰-SADN to achieve rapid 12-day startup and stable operation thereafter. The TNRE was determined at 95.27 ± 1.51% and 93.44 ± 0.96% under excessive nitrite and ammonium, respectively. The coupled-system recovered quickly after 21 days of starvation deterioration. To further treat the excessive ammonium, the nitrification side-branch of the coupled-system improved the TNRE to 99.08 ± 0.68%. Extracellular polymeric substances analysis revealed that the anammox and S⁰-SADN bacteria secreted protein-like substances to resist substrate fluctuation. Microbial community analysis indicated that the stability of bacterial community supported the stability of the coupled-system. These results collectively suggested that the separate coupled-system exhibited excellent performance and provided a platform for practical wastewater treatment in future.

Characterization of released metabolic organics during AOC analyses by P17 and NOX strains using 3-D fluorescent signals

Assimilable organic carbon (AOC) serves as an indicator of the biostability of drinking water distribution systems; however, the properties of the released organic metabolites by Pseudomonas fluorescens (P17) and Spirillum (NOX) used in AOC bioassays are seldom discussed. In this study, fluorescence excitation emission matrix (FEEM) was selected to characterize organic metabolites after substrate biotransformation and their divergences at different growth stages of both strains in AOC bioassay. Excellent correlation between ATP and colony-forming units (CFUs) was observed for both strains. The concentration of ATP per colony was six times higher in the P17 strain than in the NOX strain. A retarding phenomenon was observed for the NOX strain in the presence of high acetate-C content (100-150 μg acetate-C/L). The fluorescence wavelength peaks were wider for the protein-like substance released by the P17 strain than for those released by the NOX strain. However, fluorescent fulvic-like substances only existed in the NOX strain. Relative humus accumulation (RHA), the ratio of protein-like fluorescence intensity to humus-like fluorescence intensity, decreased in the P17 strain but substantially increased in the NOX strain in the logarithmic growth phase. RHA showed a descending trend for the P17 strain as compared to that of the NOX strain during the progress from logarithmic to stationary growth phase at three different acetate-C concentrations; however, the opposite was observed at 100 μg acetate-C/L, indicating that high acetate-C content may affect the properties of released organic matter from both strains.

Combination of self-organizing map and parallel factor analysis to characterize the evolution of fluorescent dissolved organic matter in a full-scale landfill leachate treatment plant

The dissolved organic matter (DOM) characterization in a full-scale landfill leachate treatment plant is of great importance for the design and operation of treatment processes. In this study, the long-term removal behaviors of DOM during landfill leachate treatment were explored using excitation emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (EEMs) coupled with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and self-organizing map (SOM). Results indicated that the application of combining PARAFAC and SOM on EEMs analysis effectively characterized long-term removal behaviors of DOM during leachate treatment. The DOM in raw leachate was dominated by humic substances, while its composition exhibited significant seasonal differences. A large proportion of protein-like fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) and bulk DOM were removed within membrane bioreactor (MBR) system. Meanwhile the humic-like FDOM removal capacity in nanofiltration (NF) process was well comparable with those in the MBR system owing to the bio-recalcitrant nature of humic substances. The protein-like FDOM and bulk DOM were removed synchronously in both the process of MBR and NF. Moreover, samples distribution exhibited obvious differences among NF concentrate samples. In general, the performance of MBR-NF treatment for landfill leachate displayed reasonable stability in DOM removal irrespective of seasonal variations. This study enhanced our understanding of EEMs application in characterizing leachate-derived DOM composition and has potential implications for the associated monitoring investigations in engineered systems.

Application potential of biochar in environment: Insight from degradation of biochar-derived DOM and complexation of DOM with heavy metals

Biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) is important for determining the application potential of biochar in soil remediation. However, little is known about the degradation behavior of biochar-derived DOM and its interaction with heavy metals. Here, incubation experiments combined with quenching titration experiments, which analyzed by spectroscopic technology and chemometric method, were conducted to reveal such behaviors and mechanisms. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectra showed that high aromatic and hydrophobic fractions were enriched in biochar-derived DOM and enhanced during the cultivation process, thus the biochar-derived DOM may retain a high aromaticity, stability, and resistance. However, the environmental risk of Cu caused by the increase of DOM hydrophobicity cannot be overlooked while applying biochar to polluted soil. One fulvic-like (C1), one protein-like (C2) and two humic-like (C3, C4) substances were identified from biochar-derived DOM by using parallel factor analysis of excitation-emission matrix. Additionally, the fluorescence intensity variations of these components in DOM offered an additional interpretation for the observations from UV-Vis spectra. Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy revealed that Cd binding to biochar-derived DOM first occurred in the protein- and fulvic-like fraction while protein- and humic-like substances had a stronger affinity for Cu. Furthermore, both phenolic and carboxyl groups firstly participated in the binding process of Cd with biochar-derived DOM, while polysaccharide gave the fastest response to Cu binding. These results clearly demonstrated the differences in specific heavy metal binding features of individual fluorescent substances and functional groups in biochar-derived DOM and contribute to improving the application effect of biochar in a multi-heavy metal polluted soil system.

Characteristics of intracellular algogenic organic matter and its reactivity with hydroxyl radicals

The aim of this study was to investigate the reactivity of intracellular algogenic organic matter (IOM) with hydroxyl radicals (·OH), a key reaction species in advanced oxidation processes. IOM was extracted from two green algae, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Scenedesmus sp., and two blue-green algae, Anabaena sp. and Microcystis aeruginosa using a freeze-thaw method. The second-order rate constants of the extracted IOM with ·OH were determined as 7.95 × 10⁸ M_C^-1 s^-1 (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii), 6.71 × 10⁸ M_C^-1 s^-1 (Scenedesmus sp.), 4.02 × 10⁸ M_C^-1 s^-1 (Anabaena sp.), and 4.45 × 10⁸ M_C^-1 s^-1 (Microcystis aeruginosa). These rate constants were significantly higher than values reported for dissolved organic matter in various water sources. This implies that IOM formation during algal bloom season could change the ·OH water matrix demand and adversely affect the performance of advanced oxidation processes. To investigate the physical and chemical composition characteristics of IOM and their relationship to the rate constants determined for the reaction between IOM and ·OH, liquid chromatography-organic carbon detection (LC-OCD) and fluorescence excitation-emission matrix & parallel factor analysis (FEEM-PARAFAC) were used. The IOM mainly consisted of low molecular weight (LMW) matter and protein-related compounds, as evidenced LMW neutrals (38-65%), biopolymers (7-19%), and tryptophan-like compounds (74-94%). Based on the composition characteristics of IOM, it was concluded that the molecular weight and the presence of nitrogen-containing compounds are influential parameters for determining the reactivity of IOM with ·OH.

Characterization of dissolved organic matter/nitrogen by fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for watershed management

Characterization of dissolved organic matter/nitrogen (DOM/DON) is critical in water quality assessment and nutrient management in watershed or ecosystem. This study was to investigate the link between DOM/DON and its source using fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy coupled with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). Water samples were collected from various aquatic systems in a watershed located in central Missouri, including rural watershed with various land use and land cover (LULC), landfill, and constructed wetland. PARAFAC results based on EEM spectroscopy revealed four DOM components: two humic/fulvic acid-like components, one xenobioic-like component, and one protein-like component (f4). The f4 score was found highly correlated to LULC, indicating its distinctive EEM structure in relation to source. It is believed that the f4 score could be used as a surrogate for DOM/DON source-tracking in complex ecosystems. The nitrogen 1s X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of the solid DOM showed a close relationship between N oxidation state and its origin. The classification of the sample origins by the N oxidation state confirmed the grouping by the f4 score of EEM/PARAFAC. This study demonstrated that EEM/PARAFAC could be used as a tool for DOM/DON source tracking, point or non-point source pollution control, and understanding of DOM/DON fate and transport in complex aquatic ecosystems.

Differences in behaviour of three biopolymer constituents in coagulation with polyaluminium chloride: Implications for the optimisation of a coagulation-membrane filtration process

Coagulation is often applied as a pre-treatment for membrane processes to reduce dissolved organic matter and to prevent membrane fouling. Biopolymers (BPs) have repeatedly been reported as major organic foulants, and coagulation conditions such as pH or dose have been optimised to minimise the remaining BPs. Optimisation however remains problematic because of the complex and heterogenetic nature of BP. In this study, the behaviour of several BP fractions in a coagulation process was investigated by excitation-emission matrix-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) following liquid chromatography (LC)-fractionation. Using a series of jar tests, we found that BP removal depends on the type of source water, reflecting differences in charge neutralisation conditions in three samples of natural water despite nearly identical processes for removing humic substances. This result demonstrates the complexity of optimisation for BP coagulation. Fractionation of EEM-PARAFAC to BP by LC showed that at least three organic component groups (C1, C2 and C3) constitute BP. C1 is tryptophan-like organic matter that is often found in wastewater effluent, C2 is tyrosine-like organic matter that has a phenolic chemical structure, and C3 is a humic-like substance. C1 was removed thoroughly at acidic pH but not at neutral pH, while the removal of C2 was inefficient even with a significant change in pH or dose, indicating similar difficulties in a coagulation process. The difference in components C1 and C2 may partly explain the difference in efficiencies of removal of BP in water from different sources. Our investigation suggests that the optimisation or selection of appropriate pre-treatment processes for membrane systems should be substantially based on the composition of BPs (e.g., C1 and C2 components).

Abatement of humic acid from aqueous solution using a carbonaceous conjugated microporous polymer derived from waste polystyrene

Humic acid (HA) is a major constituent of natural organic matter (NOM) found in water systems. Although NOM generally does not have any known harmful effects to humans, it imparts repulsive organoleptic properties to water, reacts with disinfectants to produce toxic products, and interferes with the efficiency of water treatment processes. The removal of NOM and related compounds from water is therefore important to render water potable and suitable for other applications. In this work, a hitherto unreported carbonaceous conjugated microporous polymer (CCMP) prepared through the organic-polymeric-precursor-controlled carbonization of hypercrosslinked post-consumer waste polystyrene (WPS) was evaluated for its capacity to remove HA from synthetic wastewater. This advanced material retained the morphology of the precursor material, while its porosity and chemical integrity were significantly improved. The approach is an environmentally friendly way of handling WPS while at the same time remediating NOM-contaminated water. Overall, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 340 mg/g in batch experiments, and a maximum initial removal rate of 95.7% in column experiments, the results showed that CCMP can be used for the remediation of HA-contaminated water at high pH.
