Chemical characteristics and source apportionment of PM2.5 in Lanzhou, China

Sources of acellular oxidative potential of water-soluble fine ambient particulate matter in the midwestern United States

Ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is associated with numerous health complications, yet the specific PM2.5 chemical components and their emission sources contributing to these health outcomes are understudied. Our study analyzes the chemical composition of PM2.5 collected from five distinct locations at urban, roadside and rural environments in midwestern region of the United States, and associates them with five acellular oxidative potential (OP) endpoints of water-soluble PM2.5. Redox-active metals (i.e., Cu, Fe, and Mn) and carbonaceous species were correlated with most OP endpoints, suggesting their significant role in OP. We conducted a source apportionment analysis using positive matrix factorization (PMF) and found a strong disparity in the contribution of various emission sources to PM2.5 mass vs. OP. Regional secondary sources and combustion-related aerosols contributed significantly (> 75 % in total) to PM2.5 mass, but showed weaker contribution (43-69 %) to OP. Local sources such as parking emissions, industrial emissions, and agricultural activities, though accounting marginally to PM2.5 mass (< 10 % for each), significantly contributed to various OP endpoints (10-50 %). Our results demonstrate that the sources contributing to PM2.5 mass and health effects are not necessarily same, emphasizing the need for an improved air quality management strategy utilizing more health-relevant PM2.5 indicators.

Pollution characteristics, source apportionment, and health risk assessment of PM10 and PM2.5 in rooftop and kerbside environment of Lanzhou, NW China

To investigate air pollution in the kerbside environment and its associated human health risks, a study was conducted in Lanzhou during December 2018, as well as in April, June, and September 2019. The research aimed to characterize the composition of PM10 and PM2.5, including elements, ions, and carbonaceous components, at both rooftop and kerbside locations. Additionally, source apportionment and health risk assessment were conducted. The results showed that the average mass concentrations of PM10 on the rooftop were 176.01 ± 83.23 μg/m3, and for PM2.5, it was 94.07 ± 64.89 μg/m3. The PM10 and PM2.5 levels at the kerbside are 2.21 times and 1.79 times, respectively, greater than those on the rooftop. Moreover, the concentrations of elements, ions, and carbonaceous components in kerbside PM were higher than those at the rooftop location. Chemical mass closure analysis identified various sources, including organic matter, mineral dust, secondary ions, other ions, elements, and other components. In comparison to rooftop particulate matter (PM), mineral dust makes a more substantial contribution to kerbside PM. Secondary ions show an opposite trend, making a greater contribution to rooftop PM. The contribution of organic components within PM of the same particle size remains relatively consistent. The outcome of the health risk assessment indicates that Co, Cd, and As in PM within the kerbside and rooftop environments do not pose a notable carcinogenic risk. However, Al and Mn do present specific non-carcinogenic risks, particularly in the kerbside environment. Furthermore, children experience elevated non-carcinogenic risk compared to adults. These findings can serve as a scientific foundation for formulating policies within the local health department.

Identification and seasonal variation of specific particulate bound (halogenated) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in air from different metal industrial parks in Northwest China

During the process of industrial heating, a large amount of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their halogenated compounds (Cl/Br-PAHs) can be formed. However, there is still limited understanding of the chemicals from different metal smelting industrial parks. This study evaluated the seasonal variations, composition profiles, and source allocations of the atmospheric particulate-bound PAHs and Cl/Br-PAHs in different metal industrial parks in a typical industrial city in northwest China. The results showed that the main PAHs produced by metal smelting were low molecular weight isomers, and the concentrations of Cl-PAHs were lower compared to Br-PAHs. The main Br-PAHs were 1-Br-Pyr and 4-Br-Pyr, while 9-Cl-Fle, 1-Cl-Pyr, and 6-Cl-BaP were the dominated Cl-PAH isomers. No significant difference was found in the concentrations among the sites, whereas the levels of the target chemicals were higher during cold months compared to warm months. The main source of PAHs was coal combustion and gasoline vehicle emission during metal smelting, and that of Cl/Br-PAHs was also industrial coal burning. In addition to the primary source, the secondary chlorination of parent PAHs was also a significant source of Cl-PAHs in the production of high purity aluminum. This study suggests that Cl-PAHs and Br-PAHs may behave differently in the atmosphere.

Source-specific light absorption and radiative effects decreases and indications due to the lockdown

The 'extreme' emission abatement during the lockdown (from the end of 2019 to the early 2020) provided an experimental period to investigate the corresponding source-specific effects of aerosol. In this study, the variations of source-specific light absorption (babs) and direct radiative effect (DRE) were obtained during and after the lockdown period by using the artificial neural network (ANN) and source apportionment environmental receptor model. The results showed that the babs decreased for all sources during the two periods. The most reductions were observed with ∼90% for traffic-related emissions (during the lockdown) and ∼85% for coal combustion (after the lockdown), respectively. Heightened babs (370 nm) values were obtained for coal and biomass burning during the lockdown, which was attributed to the enhanced atmospheric oxidization capacity. Nevertheless, the variations of babs (880 nm) after the lockdown was mainly due to the weakening of oxidation and reduced emissions of secondary precursors. The present study indicated that the large-scale emission reduction can promote both reductions of babs (370 nm) and DRE (34-68%) during the lockdown. The primary emissions decrease (e.g., Traffic emission) may enhance atmosphere oxidation, increase the ultraviolet wavelength light absorption and DRE efficiencies. The source-specific emission reduction may be contributed to various radiation effects, which is beneficial for the adopting of control strategies.

The impacts of regional transport on anthropogenic source contributions of PM2.5 in a basin city, China

PM2.5 pollution events are often happened in urban agglomeration locates in mountain-basin regions due to the complex terra and intensive emissions. Source apportionment is essential for identifying the pollution sources and important for developing local mitigation strategies, however, it is influenced by regional transport. To understand how the regional transport influences the atmospheric environment of a basin, we connected the PM2.5 source contributions estimated by observation-based receptor source apportionment and the regional contributions estimated by a tagging technology in the comprehensive air quality model with extensions (CAMx) via an artificial neural network (ANNs). The result shows that the PM2.5 in Xi'an was from biomass burning, coal combustion, traffic related emissions, mineral dust, industrial emissions, secondary nitrate and sulfate. 48.8 % of the PM2.5 in study period was from Xi'an, then followed by the outside area of Guanzhong basin (28.2 %), Xianyang (14.6 %) and Weinan (5.8 %). Baoji and Tongchuan contributed trivial amount. The sensitivity analysis showed that the transported PM2.5 would lead to divergent results of source contributions at Xi'an. The transported PM2.5 from the outside has great a potential to alter the source contributions implying a large uncertainty of the source apportionment introduced when long-range transported pollutants arrived. It suggests that a full comprehension on the impacts of regional transport can lower the uncertainty of the local PM2.5 source apportionment and reginal collaborative actions can be of great use for pollution mitigation.

Characterization and sources of water-soluble inorganic ions during sulfate-driven and nitrate-driven haze on the largest loess accumulation plateau

With the rapid reduction of anthropogenic SO2 emissions, the critical driver of haze in China has shifted from being dominated by sulfate to alternating sulfate and nitrate. Haze induced by different driver species may differ in the chemical forms of water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs). The unique topography and high-emission industrial agglomeration of the Loess Plateau determine its severe local PM2.5 pollution and influence global weather patterns through the outward export of pollutants. PM2.5 samples were conducted in Pingyao, on the eastern Loess Plateau of China, in autumn and winter. The average mass of PM2.5 was 88.82 ± 57.37 μg/m3; sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium were the dominant component. The chemical form of the ion was dominated by (NH4)2SO4, NH4NO3, NaNO3 and KNO3 during the nitrate-driven (ND) haze, while (NH4)2SO4, NH4HSO4, NH4NO3, NaNO3 and KNO3 were predominant species during the sulfate-driven (SD) haze. Heterogeneous oxidation reactions dominated the mechanism of sulfate formation. Primary sulfate emissions or other generation pathways contributed to sulfate formation during the SD haze. The gas-phase homogeneous reaction of NO2 and NH3 dominates the nitrate generation during the ND haze. The heterogeneous reactions also played an essential role during the SD haze. Nitrate aerosol (42.30%) and coal and biomass combustion (23.23%) were the dominant sources of WSIIs during the ND haze. In comparison, nitrate aerosol (31.80%) and sulfate aerosol (25.08%) were considered the primary control direction during the SD haze. The chemical characteristics and sources of aerosols under various types of haze differ significantly, and knowledge gained from this investigation provides insight into the causes of heavy haze.

Contamination, ecological-health risks, and sources of potentially toxic elements in road-dust sediments and soils of the largest urban riverfront scenic park in China

Identifying the contamination and sources of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in road-dust sediment (RDS) and the surrounding greenspace soil of urban environments and understanding their ecological-health risks are important for pollution management and public health. The contamination characteristics, ecological and probabilistic health risks, and source apportionment of eight PTEs (Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, Ni, As, Zn, and Hg) in the Yellow River Custom Tourist Line of Lanzhou, which is the largest open urban riverfront scenic park in China, were investigated. The results showed that all the RDS PTE mean concentrations exceeded their soil background values, whereas for the surrounding greenspace soils, the concentrations of the PTEs, except for Cr and Ni, were also higher than their local background levels. Moreover, the RDS-soil system was mainly contaminated by Cd, Zn, Pb, Cu, and Hg to varying degrees, and the integrated ecological risks of PTEs in the RDS and soil were high and considerable at most sites, respectively. The probabilistic health risk assessment results demonstrated that the non-carcinogenic hazard risk for humans was negligible, but the total carcinogenic risks should be considered. Source apportionment using a positive matrix factorization model combined with multivariate statistical analyses revealed that Cr, Ni, and As in the RDS-soil system were from natural and industrial sources, Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu came from vehicle emissions and pesticide and fertilizer applications, and Hg was from natural and industrial sources and utilization of pesticides with fertilizers. This work provides scientific evidence for urban planning and human health protection in urban environments.

Concentrations and light absorption properties of PM2.5 organic and black carbon based on online measurements in Lanzhou, China

To elucidate the variations in mass concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and black carbon (BC) in PM_2.5 and their light absorption characteristics in Lanzhou, we conducted one-year online measurements by using a newly developed total carbon analyzer (TCA08) coupled with an aethalometer (AE33) from July 2018 to July 2019. The mean OC and BC concentrations were 6.4 ± 4.4 and 2.0 ± 1.3 µg/m³, respectively. Clear seasonal variations were observed for both components, with winter having the highest concentrations, followed by autumn, spring, and summer. The diurnal variations of OC and BC concentrations were similar throughout the year, with daily two peaks occurring in the morning and evening, respectively. A relatively low OC/BC ratio (3.3 ± 1.2, n = 345) were observed, indicating that fossil fuel combustion was the primary source of the carbonaceous components. This is further substantiated by relatively low biomass burning contribution (f_biomass: 27.1% ± 11.3%) to BC using aethalometer based measurement though f_biomass value which increased significantly in winter (41.6% ± 5.7%). We estimated a considerable brown carbon (BrC) contribution to the total absorption coefficient (b_abs) at 370 nm (yearly average of 30.8% ± 11.1%), with a winter maximum of 44.2% ± 4.1% and a summer minimum of 19.2% ± 4.2%. Calculation of the wavelength dependence of total b_abs revealed an annual mean AAE_370-520 value of 4.2 ± 0.5, with slightly higher values in spring and winter. The mass absorption cross-section of BrC also exhibited higher values in winter, with an annual mean of 5.4 ± 1.9 m²/g, reflecting the impact of emissions from increased biomass burning on BrC concentrations.

Foliar particulate matter retention and toxic trace element accumulation of six roadside plant species in a subtropical city

As a major source of air pollution, particulate matter (PM) and associated toxic trace elements pose potentially serious threats to human health and environmental safety. As is known that plants can reduce air PM pollution. However, the relationship between PM of different sizes and toxic trace elements in foliar PM is still unclear. This study was performed to explore the association between PM of different sizes (PM2.5, PM10, PM>10) and toxic trace elements (As, Al, Cu, Zn, Cd, Fe, Pb) as well as the correlation among toxic trace elements of six roadside plant species (Cinnamomum camphora, Osmanthus fragrans, Magnolia grandiflora, Podocarpus macrophyllus, Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum and Pittosporum tobira) in Changsha, Hunan Province, China. Results showed that P. macrophyllus had the highest ability to retain PM, and C. camphora excelled in retaining PM2.5. The combination of P. macrophyllus and C. camphora was highly recommended to be planted in the subtropical city to effectively reduce PM. The toxic trace elements accumulated in foliar PM varied with plant species and PM size. Two-way ANOVA showed that most of the toxic trace elements were significantly influenced by plant species, PM size, and their interactions (P < 0.05). Additionally, linear regression and correlation analyses further demonstrated the homology of most toxic trace elements in foliar PM, i.e., confirming plants as predictors of PM sources as well as environmental monitoring. These findings contribute to urban air pollution control and landscape configuration optimization.

Characteristics and sources of carbonaceous aerosols in a semi-arid city: Quantifying anthropogenic and meteorological impacts

Carbonaceous aerosols have great adverse impacts on air quality, human health, and climate. However, there is a limited understanding of carbonaceous aerosols in semi-arid areas. The correlation between carbonaceous aerosols and control measures is still unclear owing to the insufficient information regarding meteorological contribution. To reveal the complex relationship between control measures and carbonaceous aerosols, offline and online observations of carbonaceous aerosols were conducted from October 8, 2019 to October 7, 2020 in Hohhot, a semi-arid city. The characteristics and sources of carbonaceous aerosols and impacts of anthropogenic emissions and meteorological conditions were studied. The annual mean concentrations (± standard deviation) of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5), organic carbon (OC), and elemental carbon (EC) were 42.81 (±40.13), 7.57 (±6.43), and 2.25 (±1.39) μg m^-3, respectively. The highest PM_2.5 and carbonaceous aerosol concentrations were observed in winter, whereas the lowest was observed in summer. The result indicated that coal combustion for heating had a critical role in air quality degradation in Hohhot. A boost regression tree model was applied to quantify the impacts of anthropogenic emissions and meteorological conditions on carbonaceous aerosols. The results suggested that the anthropogenic contributions of PM_2.5, OC, and EC during the COVID-19 lockdown period were 53.0, 15.0, and 2.36 μg m^-3, respectively, while the meteorological contributions were 5.38, 2.49, and -0.62 μg m^-3, respectively. Secondary formation caused by unfavorable meteorological conditions offset the emission reduction during the COVID-19 lockdown period. Coal combustion (46.4% for OC and 35.4% for EC) and vehicular emissions (32.0% for OC and 50.4% for EC) were the predominant contributors of carbonaceous aerosols. The result indicated that Hohhot must regulate coal use and vehicle emissions to reduce carbonaceous aerosol pollution. This study provides new insights and a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationships between control strategies, meteorological conditions, and air quality.

The influence of COVID-19 pandemic on PM2.5 air quality in Northern Taiwan from Q1 2020 to Q2 2021

The study aimed to investigate the PM_2.5 variations in different periods of COVID-19 control measures in Northern Taiwan from Quarter 1 (Q1) 2020 to Quarter 2 (Q2) 2021. PM_2.5 sources were classified based on long-range transport (LRT) or local pollution (LP) in three study periods: one China lockdown (P1), and two restrictions in Taiwan (P2 and P3). During P1 the average PM_2.5 concentrations from LRT (LRT-PM_2.5-P1) were higher at Fuguei background station by 27.9% and in the range of 4.9-24.3% at other inland stations compared to before P1. The PM_2.5 from LRT/LP mix or pure LP (Mix/LP-PM_2.5-P1) was also higher by 14.2-39.9%. This increase was due to higher secondary particle formation represented by the increase in secondary ions (SI) and organic matter in PM_2.5-P1 with the largest proportion of 42.17% in PM_2.5 from positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis. A similar increasing trend of Mix/LP-PM_2.5 was found in P2 when China was still locked down and Taiwan was under an early control period but the rapidly increasing infected cases were confirmed. The shift of transportation patterns from public to private to avoid virus infection explicated the high correlation of the increasing infected cases with the increasing PM_2.5. In contrast, the decreasing trend of LP-PM_2.5-P3 was observed in P3 with the PM_2.5 biases of ∼45% at all the stations when China was not locked down but Taiwan implemented a semi-lockdown. The contribution of gasoline vehicle sources in PM_2.5 was reduced from 20.3% before P3 to 10% in P3 by chemical signatures and source identification using PMF implying the strong impact of strict control measures on vehicle emissions. In summary, PM_2.5 concentrations in Northern Taiwan were either increased (P1 and P2) or decreased (P3) during the COVID-19 pandemic depending on control measures, source patterns and meteorological conditions.

Exploring the formation mechanism of fine particles in an ex-heavily polluted Northwestern city, China

Fine particle pollution is still a severe issue in the northwestern region of China where the formation mechanism of which remains ambiguous due to the limited studies there. In this study, a comprehensive study on the chemical composition and sources of PM_2.5 at an ex-heavily polluted northwestern city was conducted, based on filter sampling data obtained from three consecutive winter campaigns during 2020-2022. The average PM_2.5 during the three winter campaigns were 170.9 ± 66.4, 249.0 ± 75.7, and 200.9 ± 47.6 μg/m³, respectively, with the daily maximum value of PM_2.5 exceeds 400 μg/m³ under stagnant meteorological conditions charactered by high relative humidity (>60 %) and low wind speed (<1 m/s). The major chemical components in PM_2.5 were found to be inorganic aerosol (55.2 %) that mainly constituted by sulfate (24.2 %), and mineral dust (14.9 %); while the carbonous species contributed a minor fraction (∼13 %). In addition, (NH₄)₂SO₄ and NH₄NO₃ were the dominate contributors to appearance of low visibility (<3 km) which together accounting for over 85 % of light extinction coefficient (b_ext) during heavy polluted period. Source appointment of fine particles was then conducted by applying the positive matrix factorization method, and the primary sources were resolved to be coal combustion (27.7 %) and biomass burning (18.6 %), followed by industrial dust (16.2 %), residential combustion (15.3 %), traffic emissions (11.9 %) and dust aerosol (10.4 %). To explore the potential formation mechanism of fine particle pollution, the chemical evolution pattern combined with gaseous pollutants and meteorological parameters were further analyzed, which refine the important role of primary emissions in the forming of high sulfate aerosol loading, while secondary formation was largely suppressed during the winter period that totally different from those reported in the developed regions of China, thus indicating more effort should be paid on the reduction of primary particles emissions in the northwestern cities than on its gaseous percussors.

Characteristics and source apportionment of PM2.5 under the dual influence of the Spring Festival and the COVID-19 pandemic in Yuncheng city

Based on the online and membrane sampling data of Yuncheng from January 1st to February 12th, 2020, the formation mechanism of haze under the dual influence of Spring Festival and COVID-19 (Corona Virus Disease) was analyzed. Atmospheric capacity, chemical composition, secondary transformation, source apportionment, backward trajectory, pollution space and enterprise distribution were studied. Low wind speed, high humidity and small atmospheric capacity inhibited the diffusion of air pollutants. Four severe pollution processes occurred during the period, and the pollution degree was the highest around the Spring Festival. In light, medium and heavy pollution periods, the proportion of SNA (SO₄^2-, NO₃^- and NH₄⁺) was 59.6%, 56.0% and 54.9%, respectively, which was the largest components of PM_2.5; the [NO₃^-]/[SO₄^2-] ratio was 2.1, 1.5 and 1.7, respectively, indicating that coal source had a great influence; the changes of NOR (nitrogen oxidation ratio, 0.44, 0.45, 0.61) and SOR (sulphur oxidation ratio, 0.40, 0.49, 0.65) indicated the accumulation of secondary aerosols with increasing pollution. The coal combustion, motor vehicle, secondary inorganic sources and industrial sources contributed 36.8%, 26.59%, 11.84% and 8.02% to PM_2.5 masses, respectively. Backward trajectory showed that the influence from the east was greater during the Spring Festival, and the pollutants from the eastern air mass were higher, which would aggravate the pollution. Meteorological and Spring Festival had a great impact on heavy pollution weather. Although some work could not operate due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, the emission of pollutants did not reduce much.

Characteristics and source apportionment of water-soluble inorganic ions in atmospheric particles in Lvliang, China

Seasonal atmospheric particulate matter samples with different particle sizes (< 2.5 μm [PM_2.5], 2.5-5 μm [PM_2.5-5], 5-10 μm [PM_5-10], and 10-100 μm [PM_10-100]) were collected to analyze the mass concentration and distribution characteristics of nine water-soluble ions (WSIs; F^-, Cl^-, NO₃^-, SO₄^2-, Na⁺, NH₄⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, and Ca²⁺) in Lvliang in China. The results of chemical composition analysis indicated that the average concentration of total WSIs was 29.08 µg·m^-3 and accounted for 40.45% of PM_2.5, 80.99% of which was attributable to SO₄^2-, NH₄⁺, and NO₃^-; the concentration demonstrated obvious distribution characteristics. NO₃^- and NH₄⁺ primarily exist as NH₄NO₃ and (NH₄)₂SO₄, respectively, in fine particles but as NaNO₃ and NH₄Cl, respectively, in coarse particles. The PM_2.5 was alkaline overall, and K⁺ and NH₄⁺ caused the highest R_C/A values in autumn. Stationary sources contribute more to WSIs in particulates than mobile sources. The secondary transformation degree of SO₂ was higher than that of NOx, especially in fine particles. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) and potential source contribution function (PSCF) models were combined to determine the sources of WSIs in PM_2.5. Through use of the PMF model, five source factors were categorized: secondary aerosols (43.0%), biomass combustion (21.7%), coal combustion (17.6%), dust (10.9%), and vehicular traffic (6.8%). The results of the PSCF model suggested that the transport of pollutants from Shanxi, northwestern Shaanxi, Gansu, Inner Mongolia and Henan, had the greatest effect on air quality in Lvliang.

Comparison of bacterial community structure in PM2.5 during hazy and non-hazy periods in Guilin, South China

In recent years, significant efforts have been made to study changes in the levels of air pollutants at regional and urban scales, and changes in bioaerosols during air pollution events have attracted increasing attention. In this study, the bacterial structure of PM_2.5 was analysed under different environmental conditions during hazy and non-hazy periods in Guilin. A total of 32 PM_2.5 samples were collected in December 2020 and July 2021, and the microbial community structures were analysed using high-throughput sequencing methods. The results show that air pollution and climate change alter the species distribution and community diversity of bacteria in PM_2.5, particularly Sphingomonas and Pseudomonas. The structure of the bacterial community composition is related to diurnal variation, vertical height, and urban area and their interactions with various environmental factors. This is a comprehensive study that characterises the variability of bacteria associated with PM_2.5 in a variety of environments, highlighting the impacts of environmental effects on the atmospheric microbial community. The results will contribute to our understanding of haze trends in China, particularly the relationship between bioaerosol communities and the urban environment.

Water-soluble ions and source apportionment of PM2.5 depending on synoptic weather patterns in an urban environment in spring dust season

Emission sources and meteorological conditions are key factors affecting the intensity and duration of air pollution events. In the current study, using the daily concentrations of PM_2.5 (particulate matter with a diameter ≤ 2.5 μm) and the water-soluble ions thereof in Lanzhou from March 1, 2021, to May 31, 2021, we investigated the contributions of emission sources and locations of potential sources through positive matrix factorization and potential source contribution function analysis. In addition, synoptic weather patterns affecting pollution were typed using T-model principal component analysis. The results revealed that the average concentrations of PM_2.5 for the entire spring, dust storm days, and normal days were 54.3, 158.1 and 33.0 μg/m³, respectively. During dust storm days, sulfate produced from primary emissions was mainly present in the form of K₂SO₄, Na₂SO₄, MgSO₄, and CaSO₄, and nitrate was mainly produced through secondary conversion and took the form of NH₄NO₃. Dust, industrial entities, biomass combustion, metal smelting, secondary aerosol, and sea salt contributed to 32.0, 29.8, 13.4, 11.2, 10.8 and 2.7% of the spring PM_2.5, respectively, in Lanzhou. The main potential sources of PM_2.5 during the normal days were in the western parts of Lanzhou. Dust storms entered Lanzhou through the Hexi Corridor from several dust sources: southeastern Kazakhstan, Mongolia, the Kurbantungut Desert, and the Badain Jaran Desert. The northwest high-pressure; northern strong high-pressure and southwest low-pressure; northwest high-pressure and southwest high-pressure synoptic weather circulation types were prone to dust storms. Our results may provide a basis for local environmental governance.

Pollution characteristics and health risk assessment of PM2.5-bound arsenic: a 7-year observation in the urban area of Jinan, China

The aim of the study was to analyze the temporal trends, pollution sources, and carcinogenic health risks associated with PM_2.5-bound arsenic (As). A total of 588 PM_2.5 samples were collected in Jinan during January 2014-December 2020. The content and distribution characteristics were determined for As and Al in PM_2.5, and the pollution sources were identified based on enrichment factors (EFs). The health risk of inhalation exposure to As was estimated using the risk assessment methods recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). The annual average concentration of As in PM_2.5 was 4.5-17.5 ng m^-3, which was 0.8-2.9 times higher than the limit ruled by the European Union and China's Ambient Air Quality Standards (6 ng m^-3). From 2014 to 2020, the As concentration gradually decreased from 17.5 to 4.9 ng m^-3. After 2017, the concentration was close to the level required by the atmospheric quality standard (6 ng m^-3). The PM_2.5 and arsenic concentrations in the heating season were significantly higher than those in the non-heating season. The EF of As ranged from 144 to 607, which was higher than 10. The cancer risk of As in PM_2.5 decreased to the lowest values (heating season 1.0 × 10^-5 and non-heating season 7.1 × 10^-6, respectively) in 2019. As in Jinan mainly came from anthropogenic pollution. The level of As pollution has been significantly reduced in recent years, but there is still a high risk of carcinogenesis. Air pollution control strategies and guidelines need to be implemented in urban areas, especially during the heating season in winter and spring.

Changes in physical and chemical properties of urban atmospheric aerosols and ozone during the COVID-19 lockdown in a semi-arid region

The synergistic response of urban atmospheric aerosols and ozone (O₃) to reduction of anthropogenic emissions is complicated and still needs further study. Thus, the changes in physical and chemical properties of urban atmospheric aerosols and O₃ during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown were investigated at three urban sites and one rural site in Lanzhou with semi-arid climate. Fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) decreased at four sites by ∼ 20% while O₃ increased by >100% at two urban sites during the COVID-19 lockdown. Both primary emissions and secondary formation of PM_2.5 decreased during the lockdown. Significant increase in both sulfur and nitrogen oxidation ratios was found in the afternoon, which accounted for 48.7% of the total sulfate and 40.4% of the total nitrate, respectively. The positive matrix factorization source apportionment revealed increased contribution of secondary formation and decreased contribution of vehicle emissions. Aerosol scattering and absorption decreased by 33.6% and 45.3%, resulting in an increase in visibility by 30% and single scattering albedo (SSA) at 520 nm slightly increased by 0.02. The enhanced O₃ production was explained by increased volatile organic compounds to nitrogen oxides ratio, decreased aerosol, as well as increased SSA. The primary emissions of secondary aerosol precursors significantly decreased while Ox (i.e., NO₂ and O₃) exhibited little change. Consequently, Ox to CO ratio, PM_2.5 to elemental carbon (EC) ratio, secondary inorganic aerosols to EC ratio, and secondary organic carbon to EC ratio increased, confirming enhanced secondary aerosol production efficiency during the lockdown. Positive feedback among O₃ concentration, secondary aerosol formation, and SSA was revealed to further promote O₃ production and secondary aerosol formation. These results provide scientific guidance for collaborative management of O₃ and particulate matter pollution for cities with semi-arid climate.

High fraction of soluble trace metals in fine particles under heavy haze in central China

Atmospheric trace metals are a key component of particulate matter and significantly influence the atmospheric process and human health. The dissolved fraction of trace metals represents their bioavailability and exhibits high chemical activity. However, the optimum measurement method for detecting the soluble fraction of trace metals is still undetermined. The impact of variations in pollution on the soluble fraction is largely unrevealed. Therefore, in this work, a one-month field observation was conducted in Central China and different extraction solvents were used to determine the proper measurement method for the soluble fraction of trace metals and investigate the variation pattern under different pollution conditions. The findings show that solvents with acidity near that of aerosol water can better reflect the actual soluble fraction of trace metals in fine particulate matter. The soluble fraction of trace metals tends to increase with pollution level increased, demonstrating unexpectedly high health risks and chemical activity under heavy haze conditions. Our results indicate that remediation and trace metal pollution control are urgently needed.

Acute exposure to air pollutants increase the risk of acute glaucoma

Background

Ambient air pollution is related to the onset and progression of ocular disease. However, the effect of air pollutants on the acute glaucoma remains unclear.

Objective

To investigate the effect of air pollutants on the incidence of acute glaucoma (acute angle closure glaucoma and glaucomatocyclitic crisis) among adults.

Methods

We conducted a time-stratified case-crossover study based on the data of glaucoma outpatients from January, 2015 to Dec, 2021 in Shanghai, China. A conditional logistic regression model combined with a polynomial distributed lag model was applied for the statistical analysis. Each case serves as its own referent by comparing exposures on the day of the outpatient visit to the exposures on the other 3–4 control days on the same week, month and year. To fully capture the delayed effect of air pollution, we used a maximum lag of 7 days in main model.

Results

A total of 14,385 acute glaucoma outpatients were included in this study. We found exposure to PM_2.5, PM₁₀, nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and carbon monoxide (CO) significantly increased the odds of outpatient visit for acute glaucoma. Wherein the odds of acute glaucoma related to PM_2.5 and NO₂ were higher and more sustained, with OR of 1.07 (95%CI: 1.03–1.11) and 1.12 (95% CI: 1.08–1.17) for an IQR increase over lag 0–3 days, than PM₁₀ and CO over lag 0–1 days (OR:1.03; 95% CI: 1.01–1.05; OR: 1.04; 95% CI: 1.01–1.07).

Conclusions

This case-crossover study provided first-hand evidence that air pollutants, especially PM_2.5 and NO₂, significantly increased risk of acute glaucoma.

Seasonal variation of water-soluble brown carbon in Qingdao, China: Impacts from marine and terrestrial emissions

Brown carbon (BrC) has been attracting more and more attention owing to its significant effects on climate. However, the limited knowledge on its chemical composition and sources limits the precision of aerosol radiative forcing estimated by climate models. In this study, the chemical components of PM_2.5 and optical properties of water-soluble BrC (WS-BrC) were investigated from atmospheric particles collected in summer and winter in Qingdao, China. On the whole, though there were slight diurnal variations, seasonal differences were more obvious. Due to the influence of emission sources and meteorological conditions, the heavier pollution of carbonaceous aerosols occurred in winter. By comparison, the absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) and mass absorption efficiency of WS-BrC at 365 nm (MAE₃₆₅) showed that WS-BrC in winter had stronger wavelength dependence and light absorption capacity, which might be associated with biomass burning source contributions. This was further confirmed by a strong correlation between the light absorption coefficient at 365 nm (Abs₃₆₅) and non-sea salt K⁺, an indicator for biomass burning emissions. Four fluorescent components (C1∼C4) with high unsaturation in water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) were identified by excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis method, which showed that WSOC in Qingdao was mainly related to humic-like chromophores. It is worth noting that C1 was similar to the water-soluble chromophore of simulated marine aerosols, which proved that marine emissions do have a certain impact on atmospheric particulate matter in coastal areas. In addition, the results of source analysis showed that WS-BrC originated from different terrestrial sources in different seasons. The current results may help to improve the knowledge of optical properties of WS-BrC in coastal cities, optimize the global climate model and formulate air management policies.

High altitude Relieves transmission risks of COVID-19 through meteorological and environmental factors: Evidence from China

Existing studies reported higher altitudes reduce the COVID-19 infection rate in the United States, Colombia, and Peru. However, the underlying reasons for this phenomenon remain unclear. In this study, regression analysis and mediating effect model were used in a combination to explore the altitudes relation with the pattern of transmission under their correlation factors. The preliminary linear regression analysis indicated a negative correlation between altitudes and COVID-19 infection in China. In contrast to environmental factors from low-altitude regions (<1500 m), high-altitude regions (>1500 m) exhibited lower PM2.5, average temperature (AT), and mobility, accompanied by high SO₂ and absolute humidity (AH). Non-linear regression analysis further revealed that COVID-19 confirmed cases had a positive correlation with mobility, AH, and AT, whereas negatively correlated with SO₂, CO, and DTR. Subsequent mediating effect model with altitude-correlated factors, such as mobility, AT, AH, DTR and SO₂, suffice to discriminate the COVID-19 infection rate between low- and high-altitude regions. The mentioned evidence advance our understanding of the altitude-mediated COVID-19 transmission mechanism.

Application of magnetic susceptibility and heavy metal bioaccessibility to assessments of urban sandstorm contamination and health risks: Case studies from Dunhuang and Lanzhou, Northwest China

Direct ingestion of sandstorm particles is an important pathway in human exposure to heavy metals. This study investigated the potential health risks of heavy metals transported in sandstorms from Dunhuang to Lanzhou in northwestern China using environmental magnetic parameters and metal bioaccessibilities in simulated gastric and intestinal tracts. The mean magnetic susceptibility of sandstorms in Lanzhou was 366.86 × 10^-8 m³/kg, which was more than 5-fold higher than that of sandstorms in Dunhuang, indicating that these sandstorms continuously receive heavy metals with high magnetic mineral content along their pathways. Heavy metal concentrations in sandstorms were higher than background values and those in urban topsoil. Enrichment factors and pollution load indices showed that these heavy metals were derived from both natural and anthropogenic sources, with Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd being strongly influenced by anthropogenic sources. The bioaccessibilities of Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb in the sandstorms of Lanzhou were very high, ranging from 22.69% (Cu) to 50.86% (Pb) for gastric phase, and 12.07% (Pb)-22.11% (Cd) for interstinal phase, with the significant reduction in χ_lf of the physiologically-based extraction testing (PBET) treated sandstorms. The magnetic minerals are significant correlation with the concentrations of heavy metals in sandstorm and effect the release of heavy metals during human digestion process. The overall ecological risk posed by heavy metals contained in sandstorms was relatively low; however, the risk was moderate to high at individual sites. Ingestion posed the highest carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for both adults and children, with the risk for children being higher.

Source Apportionment of Fine Particulate Matter during the Day and Night in Lanzhou, NW China

Source apportionment of PM_2.5 in Lanzhou, China, was carried out using positive matrix factorization (PMF). Seventeen elements (Ca, Fe, K, Ti, Ba, Mn, Sr, Cd, Se, Pb, Cu, Zn, As, Ni, Co, Cr, V), water-soluble ions (Na⁺, NH₄⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca², Cl^-, NO₃^-, SO₄^2-), and organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) were analyzed. The results indicated that the mean concentration of PM_2.5 was 178.63 ± 96.99 μg/m³. In winter, the PM_2.5 concentration was higher during the day than at night, and the opposite was the case in summer, and the nighttime PM_2.5 concentration was 1.3 times higher than during the day. Water-soluble ions were the dominant component of PM_2.5 during the study. PMF source analysis revealed six sources in winter, during the day and night: salt lakes, coal combustion, vehicle emissions, secondary aerosols, soil dust, and industrial emissions. In summer, eight sources during the day and night were identified: soil dust, coal combustion, industrial emissions, vehicle emissions, secondary sulfate, salt lakes, secondary aerosols, and biomass burning. Secondary aerosols, coal combustion, and vehicle emissions were the dominant sources of PM_2.5. In winter, the proportions of secondary aerosols and soil dust sources were greater during the day than at night, and the opposite was the case in summer. The coal source, industrial emissions source, and motor vehicle emissions source were greater at night than during the day in winter. This work can serve as a case study for further in-depth research on PM_2.5 pollution and source apportionment in Lanzhou, China.

Temporal Distribution and Source Apportionment of Composition of Ambient PM2.5 in Urumqi, North-West China

In order to identify the pollution characteristics and sources of PM2.5 in Urumqi, fine particulate matter samples were collected from September 2017 to August 2018, and the water-soluble ions (WSIs), organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and metal elements were analyzed. The results indicate that the annual mass concentration of PM2.5 in Urumqi was 158.85 ± 15.11 μg/m3, with the highest seasonal average in autumn (180.49 ± 87.22 μg/m3) and the lowest in summer (148.41 ± 52.60 μg/m3). SO42− (13.58 ± 16.4 μg/m3), NO3− (13.46 ± 17.5 μg/m3), and NH4+ (10.88 ± 12.2 μg/m3) were the most abundant WSIs, and the secondary inorganic ions (SNA = SO42− + NO3− + NH4+) accounted for 87.23% of the WSIs. The NO3−/SO42− ratio indicates that the contribution of stationary sources was dominant. The annual concentrations of OC and EC were 12.00 ± 4.4 µg/m3 and 5.00 ± 3.5 µg/m3, respectively, the OC/EC ratios in winter (2.55 ± 0.7), spring (3.43 ± 1.3), and summer (3.22 ± 1.1) were greater than 2, and there was the formation of secondary organic carbon (SOC). The correlation between OC and EC in spring in Urumqi (R2 = 0.53) was low. In the PM2.5, Al and Fe were the most abundant elements. The highest mass concentration season occurred in autumn, with mass concentrations of 15.11 ± 10.1 µg/m3 and 8.33 ± 6.9 µg/m3, respectively. The enrichment factor (EF) shows that most of the metal elements come from natural sources, and the Cd element mainly comes from anthropogenic sources. PAHs with a middle molecular weight were the main ones, and the annual average annual mass concentration of the PAHs was 451.35 ng/m3. The positive matrix factor model (PMF) source analysis shows that there are five main sources of PM2.5 in Urumqi, including crustal minerals, biomass combustion, coal combustion, vehicular transport, and secondary aerosols. The distribution percentages of these different sources were 19.2%, 10.2%, 12.1%, 8.2%, and 50.3%, respectively.

Significant contribution of secondary particulate matter to recurrent air pollution: Evidence from in situ observation in the most polluted city of Fen-Wei Plain of China

Particulate matter (PM) pollution in high emission regions will affect air quality, human health and climate change on both local and regional scales, and thus attract worldwide attention. In this study, a comprehensive study on PM_2.5 and its chemical composition were performed in Yuncheng (the most polluted city of Fen-Wei Plain of China) from November 28, 2020 to January 24, 2021. The average concentration of PM_2.5 was 87.8 ± 52.0 μg/m³, which were apparently lower than those observed during the same periods of past five years, attributable to the clean air action plan implemented in this region. NO₃^- and organic carbon (OC) were the dominant particulate components, which on average contributed 22.6% and 16.5% to PM_2.5, respectively. The fractions of NO₃^-, NH₄⁺, OC and trace metals increased while those of crustal materials and elemental carbon decreased with the degradation of PM_2.5 pollution. Six types of PM_2.5 sources were identified by the PMF model, including secondary inorganic aerosol (35.3%), coal combustion (28.7%), vehicular emission (20.7%), electroplating industry (8.6%), smelt industry (3.9%) and dust (2.8%). Locations of each identified source were pinpointed based on conditional probability function, potential source contribution function and concentration weighted trajectory, which showed that the geographical distribution of the sources of PM_2.5 roughly agreed with the areas of high emission. Overall, this study provides valuable information on atmospheric pollution and deems beneficial for policymakers to take informed action to sustainably improve air quality in highly polluted region.

Water-soluble matter in PM2.5 in a coastal city over China: Chemical components, optical properties, and source analysis

Although marine and terrestrial emissions simultaneously affect the formation of atmospheric fine particles in coastal areas, knowledge on the optical properties and sources of water-soluble matter in these areas is still scarce. In this work, taking Qingdao, China as a typical coastal location, the chemical composition of PM_2.5 during winter 2019 was analyzed. Excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy was combined with parallel factor analysis model to explain the components of water-soluble atmospheric chromophores of PM_2.5. Our analysis indicated that NO₃^-, NH₄⁺ and SO₄^2- ions accounted for 86.80% of the total ion mass, dominated by NO₃^-. The ratio of [NO₃^-]/[SO₄^2-] was up to 2.42 ± 0.84, suggesting that mobile sources play an important role in local pollutants emission. The result of positive correlation between Abs₃₆₅ with K⁺ suggests that biomass burning is an important source of water-soluble organic compounds (WSOC). Six types of fluorophores (C1-C6), all humic-like substances, were identified in WSOC. Humification index, biological index and fluorescence index in winter were 1.66 ± 0.34, 0.51 ± 0.44 and 1.09 ± 0.78, respectively, indicating that WSOC in Qingdao were mainly terrestrial organic matters. Overall, although the study area is close to the ocean, the contribution of terrestrial sources to PM_2.5, especially vehicle exhaust and coal combustion, is still much higher than that of marine sources. Our study provides a more comprehensive understanding of chemical and optical properties of WSOC based on PM_2.5 in coastal areas, and may provide ground for improving local air quality.

Causes of PM2.5 pollution in an air pollution transport channel city of northern China

To develop effective mitigation policies, a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of the chemical composition, formation mechanisms, and the contribution of sources at different pollution levels is required. PM_2.5 samples were collected for 1 year from August 2016 to August 2017 at an urban site in Zibo, then chemical compositions were analyzed. Secondary inorganic aerosols (SNA), anthropogenic minerals (MIN), and organic matter (OM) were the most abundant components of PM_2.5, but only the mass fraction of SNA increased as the pollution evolved, implying that PM_2.5 pollution was caused by the formation of secondary aerosols, especially nitrate. A more intense secondary transformation was found in the heating season (from November 15, 2016, to March 14, 2017), and a faster secondary conversion of nitrate than sulfate was discovered as the pollution level increased. The formation of sulfate was dominated by heterogeneous reactions. High relative humidity (RH) in polluted periods accelerated the formation of sulfate, and high temperature in the non-heating season also promoted the formation of sulfate. Zibo city was under ammonium-rich conditions during polluted periods in both seasons; therefore, nitrate was mainly formed through homogeneous reactions. The liquid water content increased significantly as the pollution levels increased when the RH was above 80%, indicating that the hygroscopic growth of aerosol aggravated the PM_2.5 pollution. Source apportionment showed that PM_2.5 was mainly from secondary aerosol formation, road dust, coal combustion, and vehicle emissions, contributing 36.6%, 16.5%, 14.7%, and 13.1% of PM_2.5 mass, respectively. The contribution of secondary aerosol formation increased remarkably with the deterioration of air quality, especially in the heating season.

Effects of pH on light absorption properties of water-soluble organic compounds in particulate matter emitted from typical emission sources

Water-soluble organic compounds (WSOC) have a significant impact on aerosol radiative forcing and climate change, and there is considerable uncertainty in predicting and mitigating their climate and environmental effects. Here, the effects of pH on the light absorption properties of WSOC in particulate matter from different typical emission sources and ambient aerosols were systematically investigated using UV-vis spectrophotometer. pH (2-10) had an important impact on the light absorption properties of WSOC. The absorption, aromaticity, and the light absorption capacity of WSOC increased significantly with increasing pH for all samples. The difference absorbance spectra (∆absorbance) showed that the change of light absorption properties with pH was related to the deprotonate of carboxyl and phenolic groups resonating with aromatic and conjugated systems, with the most likely structures being carboxylic acids and phenols. Coal combustion and summer samples exhibited much higher susceptibility of light absorption properties to pH variation (increased by 27.0% and 65.9% relative to the pH 2 level, respectively). Absorption indices of almost all samples were significantly correlated with pH, indicating that the light absorption properties of WSOC may be quantitatively related to pH. The pH-dependent light absorption properties may have profound implications for evaluating the climate impacts of aerosol WSOC such as radiative forcing.

Fine particulate matter pollution characteristics and source apportionment of Changchun atmosphere

In order to study the pollution characteristics and main sources of fine particulate matter in the atmosphere of the city of Changchun, PM_2.5 samples were collected during the four seasons in 2014, and representative months for each season are January, April, July, and October. Sample collection was carried out on 10 auto-monitoring stations in Changchun, and PM_2.5 mass concentration and its chemical components (including inorganic elements, organic carbon, elemental carbon, and water-soluble ions) were measured. The results show that the annual average mass concentration of PM_2.5 in Changchun in 2014 was about 66.77 μg/m³. Organic matter was the highest component in PM_2.5, followed by secondary inorganic ions (SNA), mineral dust (MIN), elemental carbon (EC), and trace elements (TE). Positive matrix factorization (PMF) results gave seven factors, namely, industrial, biomass and coal burning, industrial and soil dust, motor vehicle, soil and secondary ion, light industrial, and hybrid automotive and industrial sources in PM_2.5, with contributing values of 18.9%, 24.2%, 5.7%, 23.0%, 11.5%, 13.0%, and 3.6%, respectively.

Characteristics of airborne particles retained on conifer needles across China in winter and preliminary evaluation of the capacity of trees in haze mitigation

To fully understand the characteristics of particulate matter (PM) retained on plant leaves (PMR) and the effect of vegetation on haze on a large spatial scale, we investigated needle samples collected from 78 parks and campuses in 31 cities (30 provincial cities) of China and developed a comprehensive method to characterise PMR. Both the PMR load (including water-insoluble particulate matter (WIPM), water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIS) and water-soluble organic matter (WSOM)), with a mean value of 554 ± 345 mg m^-2 leaf area, and component profiles of PMR showed obvious spatial variation across the cities. Though haze pollution levels vary greatly among the 31 cities, the PM retention capacity of needles does not depend on haze level because PMR generally reaches saturation before precipitation in winter. The water-soluble component (WSC, the sum of WSIS and WSOM) accounted for 52.3% of PMR on average, among which WSIS and WSOM contributed 21.4% and 30.9% to PMR, respectively. The dominant ions of WSIS in PMR in the cities were Ca²⁺, K⁺ and NO₃^-, indicating that raised dust, biomass combustion and traffic exhaust are significant sources of PM in China. Compared with previous reports, the particle size distributions of PMR and PM across China were consistent, with fine PM (PM_2.5) constituting a substantial proportion (43.8 ± 17.0%) of PMR. These results prove that trees can effectively remove fine particles from the air, thereby reducing human exposure to inhalable PM. We proposed a method to estimate the annual amount of PMR on Cedrus deodara, with an average value of 11.9 ± 9.6 t km^-2 canopy yr^-1 in China. Compared with the load of dust fall (atmospheric particles naturally falling on the ground, average of 138 ± 164 t km^-2 land area yr^-1 in China), we conclude that trees play a significant role in mitigating haze pollution.

High contribution of vehicle emissions to fine particulate pollutions in Lanzhou, Northwest China based on high-resolution online data source appointment

The quantitative estimation of urban particulate matter (PM) sources is essential but limited because of various reasons. The hourly online data of PM_2.5, organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), water-soluble ions, and elements from December 2019 to November 2020 was used to conduct PM source appointment, with an emphasis on the contribution of vehicle emissions to fine PM pollution in downtown Lanzhou, Northwest China. Vehicle emissions, secondary formation, mineral dust, and coal combustion were found to be the major PM sources using the positive matrix factorization model. The seasonal mean PM_2.5 were estimated to be 72.8, 39.2, 24.3, and 43.6 μg·m^-3 and vehicle emissions accounted for 35.7%, 25.8%, 30.0%, and 56.6% in winter, spring, summer, and autumn, respectively. Vehicle emissions were the largest source of PM considering the high PM pollution in winter and its significantly large contribution in autumn. Furthermore, the contribution of vehicle emissions increased with increasing PM in winter and autumn. Vehicle emissions were also the most important source of EC, accounting for 70.3%, 91.0%, 83.5%, and 93.7% of the total EC in winter, spring, summer, and autumn, respectively. With the reduction in industrial emissions and increase in vehicle numbers in China in recent years, vehicle emissions are going to be the largest source of urban PM pollution. To sustainably improve air quality in Lanzhou and other Chinese cities, efforts should be made to control vehicle emissions such as promoting clean-energy vehicles and encouraging public transportation.

Indoor/outdoor relationships, signatures, sources, and carcinogenic risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons-enriched PM2.5 in an emerging port of northern China

Humans spend most of their time in indoor environments, thus a thorough understanding of indoor and outdoor PM_2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) origins for accurate assessment of health risks is required. In the present study, 84 pairs of PM_2.5 samples from indoor (laboratory) and outdoor (campus) locations were collected from April to December 2018 in Caofeidian, China. The annual median concentration of PM_2.5 outdoors was 90.80 µg/m³, 9.08 times higher than the annual standard of WHO guideline (10 µg/m³). Indoor PM_2.5 annual median concentration (41.80 µg/m³) was also higher than the annual standard of ASHRAE guideline (15 µg/m³). The annual median concentrations of ∑₁₈PAHs indoors (44.23 ng/m³) and outdoors (189.6 ng/m³) were highest in winter and descended in the order of autumn > spring > summer. Contrary to summer and autumn, indoor/outdoor concentration ratios were less than 1 in spring and winter, indicating that the contribution of outdoor particle infiltration was more significant than that of indoor sources. The positive matrix factorization model suggested that indoor PAHs came from three sources: vehicle emissions (43%), biomass burning (37%), industry emissions, and coal combustion (20%). Outdoor PAHs came from four sources: petroleum volatilization (39%), vehicle emissions (30%), coal combustion (18%), and biomass burning (13%). The incremental lifetime cancer risk values of indoor and outdoor PAHs in winter exceeded the acceptable level (10^-6), and the carcinogenic risk of adults was higher than that of children and teenagers. These results indicated that simultaneous monitoring of indoor and outdoor PAHs is recommended for accurate assessment of health risk, and the analysis in the current work should be helpful to formulate policies to reduce PAHs emissions.

Association between atmospheric PM2.5 and daily outpatient visits for children's respiratory diseases in Lanzhou

The relationship between fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) and respiratory disease outcomes among children aged 0 to 14 years in Lanzhou, China, was evaluated. We utilized a generalized additive model linked by a quasi-Poisson distribution to examine the associations between PM_2.5 and paediatric respiratory outpatient visits for time lags of 0 up to 7 days, and stratified by gender, age, and season. Cases of respiratory disease in children were collected from 3 large hospitals for the years 2014-2017 and then linked with air pollutant concentrations from 4 air quality monitoring stations by date. We observed positive and significant associations between PM_2.5 and respiratory disease from the lag to lag 7, and from lag01 to lag07, with ER reaching the maximum value at lag07. For each 10 μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5 (lag07), the associated increment in respiratory diseases was 2.83% (95% CI 1.80%-3.86%). Males were more sensitive to the adverse effects, and the association was more significant in spring (from March to May) and winter (from December to the next February). Overall, the child group (age 3-6 years) demonstrated a higher risk of respiratory disease after PM_2.5 exposure. The associations between ambient PM_2.5 and respiratory hospital outpatients among young children became partially attenuated after the adjustment for gaseous pollutants in subgroups. The exposure-response curves were positive and generally nonlinear but flatted at concentrations over 60 μg/m³. This research found a significant association between ambient PM_2.5 levels and hospital outpatient visits in child with respiratory diseases in Lanzhou, China.

A bibliometric and visualized analysis of research progress and frontiers on health effects caused by PM2.5

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is one of the major air pollutants. A large number of epidemiological and experimental studies have shown that PM2.5 pollution can cause adverse health consequences, which has attracted more public attention. In order to have a deeper and more structured understanding of the research progress and frontiers on the impact of PM2.5 on health, in this study, we used the bibliometrics software CiteSpace to analyze the relevant literature in this field. The results show that since 2000, the relevant literature has increased steadily, especially in the last 5 years, and the number of publications in China has increased rapidly. The United States has the most publications. The Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor Joel Schwartz are the most published institution and author, respectively, and many articles have been published in the journal of Environmental Health Perspectives. Over time, studies on the health effects of PM2.5 have gradually deepened. In addition to a more comprehensive study of its harmful effects, the related molecular mechanisms have also been further explored. We believe that countries and regions should strengthen cooperation and jointly solve the harm caused by PM2.5 through the integration of multiple disciplines and fields. In addition, the adverse health consequences and its related mechanisms caused by exposure to ultrafine particle, different chemical components of PM2.5, as well as the intervention of the health effects caused by PM2.5 need to be further studied.

Chemical characteristics and source apportionment of PM2.5 in a petrochemical city: Implications for primary and secondary carbonaceous component

To study the pollution features and underlying mechanism of PM_2.5 in Luoyang, a typical developing urban site in the central plain of China, 303 PM_2.5 samples were collected from April 16 to December 29, 2015 to analyze the elements, water soluble inorganic ions, organic carbon and elemental carbon. The annual mean concentration of PM_2.5 was 142.3 μg/m³, and 75% of the daily PM_2.5 concentrations exceeded the 75 μg/m³. The secondary inorganic ions, organic matter and mineral dust were the most abundant species, accounting for 39.6%, 19.2% and 9.3% of the total mass concentration, respectively. But the major chemical components showed clear seasonal dependence. SO₄^2- was most abundant specie in spring and summer, which related to intensive photochemical reaction under high O₃ concentration. In contrast, the secondary organic carbon and ammonium while primary organic carbon and ammonium significantly contributed to haze formation in autumn and winter, respectively. This indicated that the collaboration effect of secondary inorganic aerosols and carbonaceous matters result in heavy haze in autumn and winter. Six main sources were identified by positive matrix factorization model: industrial emission, combustion sources, traffic emission, mineral dust, oil combustion and secondary sulfate, with the annual contribution of 24%, 20%, 24%, 4%, 5% and 23%, respectively. The potential source contribution function analysis pointed that the contribution of the local and short-range regional transportation had significant impact. This result highlighted that local primary carbonaceous and precursor of secondary carbonaceous mitigation would be key to reduce PM_2.5 and O₃ during heavy haze episodes in winter and autumn.

Short-term personal PM2.5 exposure and change in DNA methylation of imprinted genes: Panel study of healthy young adults in Guangzhou city, China

DNA methylation (DNAm) plays a significant role in deleterious health effects inflicted by fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) on the human body. Recent studies have reported that DNAm of imprinted control regions (ICRs) in imprinted genes may be a sensitive biomarker of environmental exposure. Less is known about specific biomarkers of imprinted genes after PM_2.5 exposure. The relationship between PM_2.5 and its chemical constituents and DNAm of ICRs in imprinted genes after short-term exposure was investigated to determine specific human biomarkers of its adverse health effects. A panel study was carried out in healthy young people in Guangzhou, China. Mixed-effects models were used to evaluate the influence of PM_2.5 and its constituent exposure on DNAm while controlling for potential confounders. There was no significant correlation between DNAm and personal PM_2.5 exposure mass. DNAm changes in eight ICRs (L3MBTL1, NNAT, PEG10, GNAS Ex1A, MCTS2, SNURF/SNRPN, IGF2R, and RB1) and a non-imprinted gene (CYP1B1) were significantly associated with PM_2.5 constituents. Compared to non-imprinted genes, imprinted gene methylation was more susceptible to interference with PM_2.5 constituent exposure. Among those genes, L3MBTL1 was the most sensitive to personal PM_2.5 constituent exposure. Moreover, transition metals derived from traffic sources (Cd, Fe, Mn, and Ni) significantly influenced DNAm of the imprinted genes, suggesting the importance of more targeted measures to reduce toxic constituents. Bioinformatics analysis indicated that imprinted genes (RB1) may be correlated with pathways and diseases (non-small cell lung cancer, glioma, and bladder cancer). The present study suggests that screening the imprinted gene for DNAm can be used as a sensitive biomarker of PM_2.5 exposure. The results will provide data for prevention of PM_2.5 exposure and a novel perspective on potential mechanisms on an epigenetic level.

Water-Soluble Ions in Atmospheric Aerosol Measured in a Semi-Arid and Chemical-Industrialized City, Northwest China

We investigated water-soluble ions (WSIs) of aerosol samples collected from 2016 to 2017 in Lanzhou, a typical semi-arid and chemical-industrialized city in Northwest China. WSIs concentration was higher in the heating period (35.68 ± 19.17 μg/m3) and lower in the non-heating period (12.45 ± 4.21 μg/m3). NO3−, SO42−, NH4+ and Ca2+ were dominant WSIs. The concentration of SO42− has decreased in recent years, while the NO3− level was increasing. WSIs concentration was affected by meteorological factors. The sulfur oxidation and nitrogen oxidation ratios (SOR and NOR) exceeded 0.1, inferring the vital contribution of secondary transformation. Meanwhile higher O3 concentration and temperature promoted the homogeneous reaction of SO2. Lower temperature and high relative humidity (RH) were more suitable for heterogeneous reactions of NO2. Three-phase cluster analysis illustrated that the anthropogenic source ions and natural source ions were dominant WSIs during the heating and non-heating periods, respectively. The backward trajectory analysis and the potential source contribution function model indicated that Lanzhou was strongly influenced by the Hexi Corridor, northeastern Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, northern Qinghai province, Inner Mongolia Plateau and its surrounding cities. This research will improve our understanding of the air quality and pollutant sources in the industrial environment.

Ecological Risk Assessment and Contamination History of Heavy Metals in the Sediments of Chagan Lake, Northeast China

The study deals with the spatio-temporal distribution of heavy metals in the sediments of Chagan lake, Northeast China. The pollution history of heavy metals is studied simultaneously through the 210Pb dating method by analyzing the characteristic of As, Hg, Cd, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb, and Zn concentration-depth profiles. The potential ecological risk index (RI) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) were used to evaluate the contamination degree. Principal component analysis (PCA), based on the logarithmic transformation and isometric log-ratio (ilr) transformed data, was applied with the aim of identifying the sources of heavy metals. The element concentrations show that the heavy metals are enriched in the surface sediment and sediment core with a varying degree, which is higher in the surficial residue. The results of Igeo indicate that the Cd and Hg in the surface sediment have reached a slightly contaminated level while other elements, uncontaminated. The results of RI show that the study area can be classified as an area with moderate ecological risk in which Cd and Hg mostly contribute to the overall risk. For the sediment core, the 210Pb dating results accurately reflect the sedimentary history over 153 years. From two evaluation indices (RI and Igeo) calculated by element concentration, there is no contamination, and the potential ecological risk is low during this period. The comparative study between raw and ilr transformed data shows that the closure effect of the raw data can be eliminated by ilr transformation. After that, the components obtained by robust principal component analysis (RPCA) are more representative than those obtained by PCA, both based on ilr transformed dataset, after eliminating the influence of outliers. Based on ilr transformed data with RPCA, three primary sources could be inferred: Cr, Ni, As, Zn, and Cu are mainly derived from natural sources; the main source of Cd and Hg are associated with agricultural activities and energy development; as for Pb, it originated from traffic and coal-burning activities, which is consistent with the fact that the development of tourism, fishery, and agriculture industries has led to the continuous increasing levels of anthropogenic Pb in Chagan Lake. The summarized results and conclusions will undoubtedly enhance the governmental awareness of heavy metal pollution and facilitate appropriate pollution control measures in Chagan Lake.

The characteristics of atmospheric particles and metal elements during winter in Beijing: Size distribution, source analysis, and environmental risk assessment

In order to investigate the pollution characteristics of size-segregated particles and metal elements (MEs) after the Chinese Air Pollution Prevention Action Plan was released in 2013, an intensive field campaign was conducted in the suburban area of Chaoyang District, Beijing in winter 2016. The size distributions of particle mass concentrations were bimodal, with the first peak in the fine fraction (0.4-2.1 µm) and the second peak in the coarse fraction (3.3-5.8 µm). Moreover, the proportion of fine particles increased and the proportion of coarse particles decreased as the pollution level was more elevated. It was found that the composition of coarse particles is as important as that of fine particles when pollution of aerosol metals in the atmosphere in 2016 were compared to 2013. In addition, according to the size distribution characteristics, 23 MEs were divided into three groups: (a) Fe, Co, Sr, Al, Ti, Ba, and U, which concentrated in coarse mode; (b) Zn, As, Cd, Tl, and Pb, which concentrated in fine mode; and (c) Na, K, Be, V, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Mo, Ag, and Sn, showing bimodal distribution. Under clean air, slight pollution and moderate pollution conditions, most elements maintained their original size distributions, while under severe pollution, the unimodal distributions of most MEs became bimodal distributions. The factors analysis combined with size distributions indicated that Na, Zn, Mo, Ag, Cd, and Tl, showing the moderate to severe contamination on environment, were significantly influenced by diffuse regional emissions or anthropogenic source emissions (vehicle exhaust emissions and combustion process). The environmental risk assessment revealed that the heavy metal loading in the atmospheric particles collected had a high potential for ecological risk to the environment during sampling period because of the high contribution of Cd, Tl, Zn and Pb.

Humidity and PM2.5 composition determine atmospheric light extinction in the arid region of northwest China

Atmospheric visibility can directly reflect the air quality. In this study, we measured water-soluble ions (WSIs), organic and element carbon (OC and EC) in PM_2.5 from September 2017 to August 2018 in Urumqi, NW China. The results show that SO₄^2-, NO₃^- and NH₄⁺ were the major WSIs, together accounting for 7.32%-84.12% of PM_2.5 mass. Total carbon (TC=OC+EC) accounted for 12.12% of PM_2.5 mass on average. And OC/EC > 2 indicated the formation of secondary organic carbon (SOC). The levels of SO₄^2-, NO₃^- and NH₄⁺ in low visibility days were much higher than those in high visibility days. Relative humidity (RH) played a key role in affecting visibility. The extinction coefficient (b_ext) that estimated via Koschmieder formula with visibility was the highest in winter (1441.05 ± 739.95 Mm^-1), and the lowest in summer (128.58 ± 58.00 Mm^-1). The b_ext that estimated via IMPROVE formula with PM_2.5 chemical component was mainly contributed by (NH₄)₂SO₄ and NH₄NO₃. The b_ext values calculated by both approaches presented a good correlation with each other (R² = 0.87). Multiple linear regression (MLR) method was further employed to reconstruct the empirical regression model of visibility as a function of PM_2.5 chemical components, NO₂ and RH. The results of source apportionment by Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model showed that residential coal combustion and vehicle emissions were the major sources of b_ext.

The interaction laws of atmospheric heavy metal ions and water-soluble organic compounds in PM2.5 based on the excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy

The excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy was used to characterize the fluorescence properties of water-soluble organic compounds (WSOCs) in PM_2.5 coupled with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). Three main components of WSOCs were extracted from PM_2.5, i.e., humic-like (fulvic acid-like and humic acid-like) substances (HULIS), and soluble microbial by-product-like or aromatic protein-like, respectively. A fluorescence quenching experiment was designed to systematically analyze the interaction laws of atmospheric heavy metal ions and WSOCs in PM_2.5. Our study revealed HULIS, especially the humic acid-like substances, might be principal substances binding with metal ions and the strength of interactions was related to the types and concentrations of metal ions. Furthermore, EEM was a powerful tool to understand the interaction laws of atmospheric heavy metal ions and WSOCs in PM_2.5. This work implied that the interactions of atmospheric heavy metal ions and WSOCs might directly or indirectly play a significant role in atmospheric environment and public health.

Atmospheric particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, n-alkanes, hopanes, steranes and trace metals: PM2.5 source identification, individual and cumulative multi-pathway lifetime cancer risk assessment in the urban environment

The occurrence of atmospheric fine particles (PM_2.5)-associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), trace metals and organic molecular markers was investigated by conducting an intensive sampling campaign at the Eastern Mediterranean urban area of Nicosia (Cyprus). Sixty-two 24-hr PM_2.5 samples were collected and analyzed for fifty parent and alkylated PAHs, twenty-five long chain n-alkanes, seventeen hopanes and twelve steranes used for source apportionment. The same number and kind of samples were analyzed to determine twenty-eight trace metals. Emphasis was given to investigate the air levels of the scarcely monitored although highly carcinogenic PAHs such as dibenzopyrenes, dibenzoanthracenes, 7H-benzo[c]fluorene and 5-methyl-chrysene, not included in the USEPA's sixteen PAH priority list (USEPA-16). UNMIX receptor model was applied to apportion the sources of atmospheric emissions of the determined organic compounds and trace metals and evaluate their daily contributions to the corresponding PM_2.5 associated concentrations. For comparison purposes, principal component analysis with multiple linear regression (PCA/MLR) was also applied and its results are reported. The UNMIX receptor model, compared to PCA/MLR, offered a more precise source profile and more reliable daily mass source distributions by eliminating negative contributions. The individual and cumulative multi-pathway lifetime cancer risk (posed via inhalation, ingestion and dermal contact) by exposure to PM_2.5-associated USEPA-16 listed and non-listed PAHs and selected airborne trace metals (As, Cd, Co, Ni, and Pb) were assessed. To estimate the contribution of each emission source to the total cancer risk, multiple linear regression analysis was performed, using as independent variables the daily source mass contributions and as dependent variables the respective cancer risk units. The estimated total cumulative cancer risk comprising all toxic PAHs, besides those included in the priority list, and metals was higher than the USEPA's threshold by a factor of eight, denoting a potential risk for long-term exposure of a population in the urban environment.

PM2.5 and Trace Elements in Underground Shopping Districts in the Seoul Metropolitan Area, Korea

We measured PM_2.5 in 41 underground shopping districts (USDs) in the Seoul metropolitan area from June to November 2017, and associated 18 trace elements to determine the sources and assess the respiratory risks. The PM_2.5 concentrations were 18.0 ± 8.0 μg/m³ inside USDs, which were lower than 25.2 ± 10.6 μg/m³ outside. We identified five sources such as indoor miscellanea, soil dust, vehicle exhaust/cooking, coal combustion, and road/subway dust, using factor analysis. Almost 67% of the total trace element concentration resulted from soil dust. Soil dust contribution increased with the number of stores because of fugitive dust emissions due to an increase in passers-by. Vehicle exhaust/cooking contribution was higher when the entrances of the USDs were closed, whereas coal combustion contribution was higher when the entrances of the USDs were open. Although miscellanea and coal combustion contributions were 3.4% and 0.7%, respectively, among five elements with cancer risk, Cr and Ni were included in miscellanea, and Pb, Cd, and As were included in coal combustion. The excess cancer risk (ECR) was the highest at 67 × 10^-6 for Cr, and the ECR for Pb was lower than 10^-6, a goal of the United States Environmental Protection Agency for hazardous air pollutants.

Airborne particulate matter (PM2.5) triggers cornea inflammation and pyroptosis via NLRP3 activation

Although studies have demonstrated that fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) induces ocular surface damage, PM2.5 exposure causes cornea toxicity is not entirely clear. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of the nod-like receptor family pyrin domain containing three (NLRP3) inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis in PM_2.5-related corneal toxicity. Human corneal epithelial cells (HCECs) were exposed to different concentrations of PM_2.5, and the cell viability, expressions of NLRP3 inflammasome mediated pyroptosis axis molecules and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation were measured in HCECs. Animal experiments were undertaken to topically apply PM_2.5 suspension to mouse eyes for three months and the pyroptosis related molecules in the mouse corneas were measured. RESULTS: Our results showed a dose-dependent decrease of HCEC viability in the PM_2.5-treated cells. NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis axis (NLRP3, ASC, GSDMD, caspase-1, IL-1β, and IL-18) were activated in the PM_2.5-treated HCECs, accompanied by increased ROS formation. Further in vivo study confirmed the activation of this pathway in the mouse corneas exposed to PM_2.5. In conclusion, this study provids novel evidence that PM_2.5 induces corneal toxicity by triggering cell pyroptosis.

Carbonaceous Aerosols in PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 Size Fractions over the Lanzhou City, Northwest China

Carbonaceous particles have been confirmed as major components of ambient aerosols in urban environments and are related to climate impacts and environmental and health effects. In this study, we collected different-size particulate matter (PM) samples (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10) at an urban site in Lanzhou, northwest China, during three discontinuous one-month periods (January, April, and July) of 2019. We measured the concentrations and potential transport pathways of carbonaceous aerosols in PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 size fractions. The average concentrations of OC (organic carbon) and EC (elemental carbon) in PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 were 6.98 ± 3.71 and 2.11 ± 1.34 μg/m3, 8.6 ± 5.09 and 2.55 ± 1.44 μg/m3, and 11.6 ± 5.72 and 4.01 ± 1.72 μg/m3. The OC and EC concentrations in PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 had similar seasonal trends, with higher values in winter due to the favorable meteorology for accumulating pollutants and urban-increased emissions from heating. Precipitation played a key role in scavenge pollutants, resulting in lower OC and EC concentrations in summer. The OC/EC ratios and principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the dominant pollution sources of carbon components in the PMs in Lanzhou were biomass burning, coal combustion, and diesel and gasoline vehicle emissions; and the backward trajectory and concentration weight trajectory (CWT) analysis further suggested that the primary pollution source of EC in Lanzhou was local fossil fuel combustion.

A Study on Heavy Metals in the Surface Soil of the Region around the Qinghai Lake in Tibet Plateau: Pollution Risk Evaluation and Pollution Source Analysis

In order to reveal the pollution characteristics and sources of heavy metals in surface soil of the region around the Qinghai Lake in Tibet Plateau, improve the prevention awareness and measures of local residents and urge the local government to implement necessary prevention and control measures, nine heavy metals (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) in the surface soil samples of the region around the Qinghai Lake have been collected and analyzed. The methods such as statistic method, geo-accumulation index method, Nemerow index method, potential ecological risk index method, human health risk evaluation method and positive matrix factor analysis model (PMF) have been used to evaluate pollution characteristics and potential risks and analyze the sources of heavy metals. The results are shown below. First, the average contents of heavy metals (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) in soil are 11.73 ± 3.78, 0.62 ± 1.40, 12.38 ± 3.68, 41.35 ± 13.01, 19.33 ± 8.92, 546.96 ± 159.28, 21.18 ± 7.04, 21.86 ± 6.61 and 63.51 ± 19.71 mg·kg−1, respectively. Compared with the background values of the soil environment in Qinghai Province, it can be seen that there is an accumulation of these heavy metals to varying degrees, which is the most serious in Cd, Co and Pb. Second, the analysis of the geo-accumulation index and Nemerow index indicates that the heavy metals in the surface soil of the region around the Qinghai Lake have reached the level of heavy pollution, mainly polluted by Cd, and the accumulation of heavy metal pollution in the north, south, southwest and southeast of the study area is more serious. Third, the results of potential ecological risk evaluation show that the study area as a whole is classified as an area with high ecological risk, and Cd contributes the most to the overall risk. In fact, the heavy metals in the soil of the study area produce no noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks to human health, and children and adults may be exposed to these risks by the mouth. Finally, the PMF results reveal that the sources of heavy metals in the study area include the sources of agricultural production, the nature, coal burning and transportation, with a contribution rate of 43.10%, 25.34%, 19.67% and 11.89%, respectively.

Industrial structure, urban governance and haze pollution: Spatiotemporal evidence from China

As a negative external product of China's rapid development, haze pollution has seriously affected the quality of economic development and people's quality of life. This paper firstly explores the important reasons for the uncoordinated industrial structure caused by haze pollution, and puts forward the purpose of promoting the adjustment of industrial structure through urban governance in order to tackle with the urgent problem of haze pollution. Using panel data from 287 cities in China, this paper analyzes the relationship among industrial structure, urban governance and haze pollution using the Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression (GTWR) model. The innovations are: (1) this paper focuses on the topic of industrial structure, urban governance and haze pollution simultaneously. (2) this paper uses the method of GTWR to comprehensively consider the spatial and temporal tendency at the same time. (3) Conclusions are helpful to provide targeted policy recommendations. And the results show that: (1) the spatial clustering characteristics of haze pollution are very prominent, and have been suppressed to a certain extent under the measures of urban governance; (2) the spatial and temporal differences of industrial structure on haze pollution are large; (3) corporate governance plays an important role in slowing down haze pollution; (4) in public governance, the green coverage rate of built-up areas, the innocuous disposal rate of domestic garbage and the increase of public transport will have a negative impact on haze pollution, while highly concentrated urban population, high level of economic development, large number of industrial enterprises above designated size, and increased thermal power generation capacity will increase the degree of haze pollution; (5) cities with steadily decreasing of the proportion of the secondary industry, the proportion of the tertiary industry, the comprehensive treatment rate of industrial solid materials, the green coverage rate of the built-up area and the industrial enterprises above designated size are mainly lie in southeastern China, respectively; and cities with decline in innocuous disposal rate of domestic garbage are concentrated in the western region, while cities with significant changes of the number of buses per unit are mainly distributed in the northeastern region, the other variables are not obvious.

Temporal dynamics of heavy metal distribution and associated microbial community in ambient aerosols from vanadium smelter

Heavy metals (HMs) such as vanadium (V), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) are released into atmosphere during V smelting activities, resulting in their co-existence with airborne microbes. However, little is known about HMs distributions and associated microbes in aerosols from such industrial districts. This study reveals seasonal dynamics of HMs and microbes in ambient aerosols from V smelter in Panzhihua, China. Multiple HMs were detected, while V concentration was the highest, maximizing at 228.0 ± 10.3 ng/m³ in Spring. Health risks displayed similar trends to HMs distributions, and children were posed much higher risks than adults due to their more sensitivity to HMs. V and As contributed dramatically to total health risks among all examined HMs. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis revealed microbes tolerant to V, Zn, As, Cr, Cu and Ni. Acinetobacter widely existed with function of detoxifying V(V) and more species as Bacillus, Gobacter and Thauera tolerating V, Zn, As, Cr, Cu and Ni appeared in Summer. These findings shed light on understandings of HMs dynamics and associated microbial community in aerosols from smelting regions.

Temporal and Spatial Variation of PM2.5 in Xining, Northeast of the Qinghai–Xizang (Tibet) Plateau

PM2.5 was sampled from January 2017 to May 2018 at an urban, suburban, industrial, and rural sites in Xining. The annual mean of PM2.5 was highest at the urban site and lowest at the rural site, with an average of 51.5 ± 48.9 and 26.4 ± 17.8 μg·m−3, respectively. The average PM2.5 concentration of the industrial and suburban sites was 42.8 ± 27.4 and 37.2 ± 23.7 μg·m−3, respectively. All sites except for the rural had concentrations above the ambient air quality standards of China (GB3095-2012). The highest concentration of PM2.5 at all sites was observed in winter, followed by spring, autumn, and summer. The concentration of major constituents showed statistically significant seasonal and spatial variation. The highest concentrations of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), and water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs) were found at the urban site in winter. The average concentration of F− was higher than that in many studies, especially at the industrial site where the annual average concentration of F− was 1.5 ± 1.7 μg·m−3. The range of sulfur oxidation ratio (SOR) was 0.1–0.18 and nitrogen oxidation ratio (NOR) was 0.02–0.1 in Xining. The higher SO42−/NO3− indicates that coal combustion has greater impact than vehicle emissions. The results of the potential source contribution function (PSCF) suggest that air mass from middle- and large-scale transport from the western areas of Xining have contributed to the higher level of PM2.5. On the basis of the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, it was found that aerosols from salt lakes and dust were the main sources of PM2.5 in Xining, accounting for 26.3% of aerosol total mass. During the sandstorms, the concentration of PM2.5 increased sharply, and the concentrations of Na+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ were 1.13–2.70, 1.68–4.41, and 1.15–5.12 times higher, respectively, than annual average concentration, implying that aerosols were mainly from dust and the largest saltwater lake, Qinghai Lake, and many other salt lakes in the province of Qinghai. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) was utilized to study the surface components of PM2.5 and F− was found to be increasingly distributed from the surface to inside the particles. We determined that the extremely high PM2.5 concentration appears to be due to an episode of heavy pollution resulting from the combination of sandstorms and the burning of fireworks.
