Pesticides in the rivers and streams of two river basins in northern Greece

Pesticides in wastewater treatment plant effluents in the Yeongsan River Basin, Korea: Occurrence and environmental risk assessment

Pesticides are among the main drivers posing risks to aquatic environments, with effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) serving as a major source. This study aimed to identify the primary pesticides for which there was a risk of release into aquatic environments through WWTP effluents, thereby enabling more effective contamination management in public water bodies. In this study, monitoring, risk assessment, and risk-based prioritization of 87 pesticides in effluents from three WWTPs in the Yeongsan River Basin, Korea, were conducted. A total of 59 pesticides were detected at concentrations from 0.852 ng/L to 82.044 μg/L and exhibited variable patterns across different WWTP locations. An environmental risk assessment based on the risk quotient (RQ) of individual pesticides identified 13 substances implicated in significant ecotoxicological risks, as they exceeded RQ values of 1 at least once. An optimized risk (RQf)-based prioritization, considering the frequency of the measured environmental concentration (MEC) exceeding the predicted environmental concentration (PNEC), was conducted to identify pesticides that potentially posed risks and thus should be managed as a priority. Four pesticides had an RQf value >1; metribuzin exhibited the highest RQf value of 4.951, followed by 3-phenoxybenzoic acid, atrazin-2-hydroxy, and atrazine. Additionally, five pesticides (terbuthylazine, methabenzthiazuron, diuron, thiacloprid, and fipronil) and another four pesticides (propazine, imidacloprid, hexaconazole, and hexazione) had RQf values >0.1 and > 0.01, respectively. By calculating the contributions of individual pesticides to the RQf of these mixtures (RQf, mix) based on the concentration addition model, it was determined that >95 % of the sum of RQf, mix was driven by the top seven pesticides. These findings highlight the importance of prioritizing pesticides for effective management of contamination sources.

Interaction of different chloro-substituted phenylurea herbicides (diuron and chlortoluron) with bovine serum albumin: Insights from multispectral study

In this work, the interaction between different chloro-substituted phenylurea herbicides (diuron (DIU) and chlortoluron (CHL)) and BSA were investigated and compared at three different temperatures (283 K, 298 K and 310 K) adopting UV-vis, fluorescence, and circular dichroism spectra. The quenching mechanism of the interaction was also proposed. The energy transfer between BSA and DIU/CHL was investigated. The binding sites of DIU/CHL and BSA and the variations in the microenvironment of amino acid residues were studied. The changes of the secondary structure of BSA were analyzed. The results indicate that both DIU and CHL can significantly interact with BSA, and the degree of the interaction between DIU/CHL and BSA increases with the increase of the DIU/CHL concentration. The fluorescence quenching of BSA by DIU/CHL results from the combination of static and dynamic quenching. The DIU/CHL has a weak to moderate binding affinity for BSA, and the binding stoichiometry is 1:1. Their binding processes are spontaneous, and hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces are the main interaction forces. DIU/CHL has higher affinity for subdomain IIA (Site I) of BSA than subdomain IIIA (Site II), and also interacts with tryptophan more than tyrosine residues. The energy transfer can occur from BSA to DIU/CHL. By comparison, the strength of the interaction of DIU-BSA is always greater than that of CHL-BSA, and DIU can destroy the secondary structure of BSA molecules greater than CHL and thus the potential toxicity of DIU is higher due to DIU with more chlorine substituents than CHL. It is expected that this study on the interaction can offer in-depth insights into the toxicity of phenylurea herbicides, as well as their impact on human and animal health at the molecular level.

A review of smart electrochemical devices for pesticide detection in agricultural food and runoff contaminants

In the evolving field of food and agriculture, pesticide utilization is inevitable for food production and poses an increasing threat to the ecosystem and human health. This review systematically investigates and provides a comprehensive overview of recent developments in smart electrochemical devices for detecting pesticides in agricultural food and runoff contaminants. The focus encompasses recent progress in lab-scale and portable electrochemical sensors, highlighting their significance in agricultural pesticide monitoring. This review compares these sensors comprehensively and provides a scientific guide for future sensor development for infield agricultural pesticide monitoring and food safety. Smart devices address challenges related to power consumption, low cost, wearability, and portability, contributing to the advancement of agricultural sustainability. By elucidating the intricate details of these smart devices, this review offers a comprehensive discussion and roadmap for future research aimed at cost-effective, flexible, and smart handy devices, including novel electrocatalysts, to foster the development of next-generation agricultural sensor technology, opportunity and future direction for food security.

Toxic interactions at the physiological and biochemical levels of green algae under stress of mixtures of three azole fungicides

Assessing the interactions between environmental pollutants and these mixtures is of paramount significance in understanding their negative effects on aquatic ecosystems. However, existing research often lacks comprehensive investigations into the physiological and biochemical mechanisms underlying these interactions. This study aimed to reveal the toxic mechanisms of cyproconazole (CYP), imazalil (IMA), and prochloraz (PRO) and corresponding these mixtures on Auxenochlorella pyrenoidosa by analyzing the interactions at physiological and biochemical levels. Higher concentrations of CYP, IMA, and PRO and these mixtures resulted in a reduction in chlorophyll (Chl) content and increased total protein (TP) suppression, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content exhibited a negative correlation with algal growth. The activity of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) decreased with increasing azole fungicides and their mixture concentrations, correlating positively with growth inhibition. Azole fungicides induced dose-dependent apoptosis in A. pyrenoidosa, with higher apoptosis rates indicative of greater pollutant toxicity. The results revealed concentration-dependent toxicity effects, with antagonistic interactions at low concentrations and synergistic effects at high concentrations within the CYP-IMA mixtures. These interactions were closely linked to the interactions observed in Chl-a, carotenoid (Car), CAT, and cellular apoptosis. The antagonistic effects of CYP-PRO mixtures on A. pyrenoidosa growth inhibition can be attributed to the antagonism observed in Chl-a, Chl-b, Car, TP, CAT, SOD, and cellular apoptosis. This study emphasized the importance of gaining a comprehensive understanding of the physiological and biochemical interactions within algal cells, which may help understand the potential mechanism of toxic interaction.

A combined approach for the estimation of groundwater leaching potential and environmental impacts of pesticides for agricultural lands

Pesticide pollution can degrade the quality of land, water, and air, and imposes risks on people, flora and fauna. Pesticides are frequently chosen based on their agricultural effectiveness and cost, rather than their potential environmental impacts. The aim of this study is to present a combined approach to estimate the leaching potential and environmental impacts of pesticides for agricultural lands. The pilot study area (PSA) is the agricultural plain of the Lower Aksu Stream Basin in Antalya - Turkey. The groundwater of the agricultural plain contributes to around half of the flow rate of the stream. The first phase of the combined approach involved pesticide monitoring to screen the target pesticides, the second phase involved evaluating the physicochemical properties of the target pesticides and estimating their leaching potential using several indices, and the third phase involved environmental impact analysis of the target pesticides using the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ) risk indicator. Additionally, Principal Component Analysis was conducted to examine the correlations between physicochemical parameters of pesticides and the leaching potential index results. By the application of the combined approach, 45 target pesticides were identified for the PSA and the indices were consistent to estimate similar leaching potentials for the same pesticides. Moreover, the computed EIQ-Field Use Rates provided valuable information to rank target pesticides according to their environmental impacts on consumer, farmworker and ecology. The applied methodology provided a practical approach to select pesticides with the least leaching potential and environmental impacts to protect water quality and ecosystem health.

Effect of conventional and household water treatment technologies on the removal of pesticide residues in drinking water, Jimma town, Southwestern, Ethiopia

Water resources have been contaminated by pesticides due to the different activities of human beings. Different studies documented that advanced water treatment systems can eliminate pesticides while conventional and household treatment technologies are not well studied. The main aim of the present study is to determine the effect of conventional and household water treatment technologies on the removal of pesticide residue in drinking water. Water samples were collected from the Gibe River (intake point), from each treatment process, and from the distribution system. To determine the effect of the household water treatment process (solar disinfection and boiling), pesticides were spiked into distilled water and then passed through solar disinfection (SODIS) and boiling. The extraction of samples was conducted by following a low-density-based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction procedure. The result of the study revealed that almost all studied pesticides except o´p-DDT were detected in water samples. Most pesticides that were detected in water samples from our study areas exceeded the maximum residue limits (MRLs), except for p,p'-DDE. The percent reduction of pesticide residue after post-chlorination by conventional water treatment ranges from 11.7% (from 70.83 μg/L to 62.54 μg/L) for p´p-DDD to 97.29% (5510.1μg/L to 149.5μg/L) for Dimethachlor, and the percent reduction of pesticide residue by SODIS and boiling ranges from 2.31% (o´p-DDT) to 54.45% (Cypermethrin) and 27.13% (γ-Chlordane) to 38.9% (p´p-DDE) respectively. This indicates that treatment technologies are important for the reduction of pesticides in water. Since studied pesticides are persistent and the resides were exceed MRL (have a health impact), monitoring of pesticides in treatment plant units is necessary and treatment technology improvement is important to allow further removal of pesticides.

Toxicity of mixture of polyethylene microplastics and Up Grade® pesticide on Oreochromis niloticus juvenile: I. Hemato-biochemical and histopathological alterations

Acute toxicity experiments were conducted to determine the lethal concentration 50 (LC50) of the Up Grade®46% SL for Oreochromis niloticus. Our results showed that the 96-h LC50 value of UPGR for O. niloticus was 29.16 mg L-1. To study hemato-biochemical effects, fish were exposed for 15 days to individual UPGR at 2.916 mg L-1, individual polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) at 10 mg L-1, and to their combinations UPGR+PE-MPs. UPGR exposure induced significant decrease in account of red blood cells (RBCs) and white blood cells (WBCs), platelets, monocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, and the concentrations of hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) than other treatments, compared to the control group. Sub-acute UPGR exposure significantly increase lymphocytes, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), compared to the control group. In conclusion, UPGR and PE-MPs displayed antagonistic toxic effects due to maybe the sorption of UPGR onto PE-MPs.

Efficiency of hematological, enzymological and oxidative stress biomarkers of Cyprinus carpio to an emerging organic compound (alphamethrin) toxicity

Alphamethrin is one of the extensively used pyrethroids. Its non-specific mode-of-action might affect the non-target-organisms. Its toxicity data on aquatic organisms are lacking. We determined the toxicity (35 days) of alphamethrin (0.6µg/L and 1.2µg/L) on non-target-organisms by evaluating the efficiency of hematological, enzymological and antioxidants biomarkers of Cyprinus carpio. Compared with the control group, the efficiency of the biomarkers studied was significantly (p<0.05) impaired in the alphamethrin groups. Alphamethrin-toxicity altered hematology, transaminases and the potency of LDH of fish. ACP and ALP activity and biomarkers of oxidative stress in the gills, liver and muscle tissues were affected. IBRv2 index reveals that the biomarkers were inhibited. The observed impairments were the toxicity effects of alphamethrin with respect to concentration and time. The effectiveness of biomarkers for alphamethrin toxicity was like the toxicity data available on other banned insecticides. Alphamethrin could cause multiorgan toxicity on aquatic organisms at µg/L level.

Mammary Gland Development in Male Rats Perinatally Exposed to Propiconazole, Glyphosate, or their Mixture

This study aimed to assess whether perinatal exposure to propiconazole (PRO), glyphosate (GLY) or their mixture (PROGLY) alters key endocrine pathways and the development of the male rat mammary gland. To this end, pregnant rats were orally exposed to vehicle, PRO, GLY, or a mixture of PRO and GLY from gestation day 9 until weaning. Male offspring were euthanized on postnatal day (PND) 21 and PND60. On PND21, GLY-exposed rats showed reduced mammary epithelial cell proliferation, whereas PRO-exposed ones showed increased ductal p-Erk1/2 expression without histomorphological alterations. On PND60, GLY-exposed rats showed reduced mammary gland area and estrogen receptor alpha expression and increased aromatase expression, whereas PRO-exposed ones showed enhanced lobuloalveolar development and increased lobular hyperplasia. However, PROGLY did not modify any of the endpoints evaluated. In summary, PRO and GLY modified the expression of key molecules and the development of the male mammary gland individually but not together.

Impact of historical legacy pesticides on achieving legislative goals in Europe

Pesticides are widely used in agriculture to optimise food production. However, the movement of pesticides into water bodies negatively impacts aquatic environments. The European Union (EU) aims to make food systems fair, healthy and environmentally friendly through its current Farm to Fork strategy. As part of this strategy, the EU plans to reduce the overall use and risk of chemical pesticides by 50 % by 2030. The attainment of this target may be compromised by the prevalence of legacy pesticides arising from historical applications to land, which can persist in the environment for several decades. The current EU Farm to Fork policy overlooks the potential challenges of legacy pesticides and requirements for their remediation. In this review, the current knowledge regarding pesticide use in Europe, as well as pathways of pesticide movement to waterways, are investigated. The issues of legacy pesticides, including exceedances, are examined, and existing and emerging methods of pesticide remediation, particularly of legacy pesticides, are discussed. The fact that some legacy pesticides can be detected in water samples, more than twenty-five years after they were prohibited, highlights the need for improved EU strategies and policies aimed at targeting legacy pesticides in order to meet future targets.

Spatiotemporal distribution patterns and ecological risk of multi-pesticide residues in the surface water of a typical agriculture area in China

This study systematically investigated the occurrence, spatiotemporal distribution, and ecological risk of 106 pesticides in the surface water of the Jiaodong Peninsula in China. The results show that 52 pesticides, including 21 insecticides, 10 fungicides, and 21 herbicides, were detectable in the surface water. The concentrations of target pesticides in water samples ranged from 0.42 (tebuconazole in the wet season) to 645.31 ng/L (thiamethoxam in the normal season). The two most polluting and widespread pesticides were quintozene (maximum concentration of 481.46 ng/L and detection rate of 94 %) and atrazine (maximum concentration of 465.73 ng/L and detection rate of 100 %). The total pesticide concentrations in surface water in different seasons revealed the order of dry season > wet season > normal season. Based on aquatic pesticide concentrations, their frequency of occurrence, and effect concentrations, insecticides posed higher risks to aquatic organisms and human health than either fungicides or herbicides. Total pesticide concentrations were significantly positively correlated with suspended particulate matter, dissolved organic carbon, soil pH, normalized difference vegetation index, adjacent cropland area; and were negatively associated with adjacent grassland area. The cropland area largely influences pesticide distribution in the surface water of the Jiaodong Peninsula.

Responses of signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus to single short-term pulse exposure of pesticides at environmentally relevant concentrations

Although pesticides are often discharged into surface waters in pulses as opposed to a sustained release, the effect of episodic pollution events on freshwater crayfish is largely unknown. We monitored change in heart rate and distance moved to assess the response of signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus to short-term exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of metazachlor (MTZ), terbuthylazine (TER), and thiacloprid (TCL). Crayfish exposed to 20 µg/L of MTZ exhibited a significant increase in mean heart rate and distance moved. Increased heart rate was detected at 118 ± 74 s post-exposure to MTZ. There were no significant differences in mean heart rate and distance moved in crayfish exposed to 6 µg/L of TCL and 4 µg/L of TER. A significant correlation between heart rate and distance moved was found in all exposed groups. These results suggest that pulse exposure to MTZ impact crayfish physiology and behavior during short-term period. With pulse exposure to TCL and TER, crayfish not exhibiting a locomotor response may continue to be exposed to lower, but potentially harmful, levels of pollutants. Evidence of the impacts of pesticide pulse at environmentally relevant concentrations on crayfish is scarce. Further study is required to determine the ecological effects of such events on freshwater crayfish.

Monitoring and environmental risk assessment of agricultural fungicide and insecticides in water, sediment from Kumkale Plain, Çanakkale-Turkey

This study was conducted to assess pesticide residues in 34 water and sediment samples taken from Kumkale Plain of Çanakkale-Turkey. Residue analyses were performed with the use of Quick-Easy-Cheap-Efficient-Rugged-Safe (QuEChERS)-liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) procedure. For method verification, blank sediment and water samples were spiked at two limits of quantification (LOQ) levels of the pesticides. Overall recovery was 81.66% for sediment and 91.50% for water samples. In sediment samples, chlorpyrifos-M had the highest concentration, pyridaben was encountered in the majority of the samples (15 samples) and the highest number of pesticides (35) was seen in sample no. s13. In water samples, methoxyfenozide had the greatest concentration, metalaxyl was encountered in the highest number of samples (three samples) and the highest number of pesticide (8) was seen in sample no.w13. Sample no. s13 and w13 were taken from around the fountain basin. Pyraclostrobin and chlorantraniliprole residues exceeded the national limits set for water. In terms of hazard quotient (HQ), pesticides in sediment and waters were found to be safe. Despite the safe nature of pesticide on samples, greater attention has been paid on toxicity of the residues. It was concluded that authorities should put strict regulations on agrochemicals to reduce health risks of these chemicals.

Septic system-groundwater-surface water couplings in waterfront communities contribute to harmful algal blooms in Southwest Florida

As human population growth has expanded in Southwest Florida, water quality has become degraded with an increased occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs). Red tide (Karenia brevis) originating offshore, intensifies in nearshore waters along Florida's Gulf Coast, and blue-green algae (Microcystis spp.) originating in Lake Okeechobee is discharged into the Caloosahatchee River. These HABs could be enhanced by anthropogenic nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from adjacent watersheds. North Fort Myers is a heavily developed, low-lying city on the Caloosahatchee River Estuary serviced by septic systems with documented nutrient and bacterial pollution. To identify sources of pollution within North Fort Myers and determine connections with downstream HABs, this multiyear (2017-2020) study examined septic system- groundwater- surface water couplings through the analysis of water table depth, nutrients (N, P), fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), molecular markers (HF183, GFD, Gull2), chemical tracers (sucralose, pharmaceuticals, herbicides, pesticides), stable isotopes of groundwater (δ¹⁵N-NH₄, δ¹⁵N-NO₃) and particulate organic matter (POM; δ¹⁵N, δ¹³C), and POM elemental composition (C:N:P). POM samples were also collected during K. brevis and Microcystis spp. HAB events. Most (>80%) water table depth measurements were too shallow to support septic system functioning (<1.07 m). High concentrations of NH₄⁺ and NO_x, up to 1094 μM and 482 μM respectively, were found in groundwater and surface water. δ¹⁵N values of groundwater (+4.7‰) were similar to septic effluent (+4.9‰), POM (+4.7‰), and downstream HABs (+4.8 to 6.9‰), indicating a human waste N source. In surface water, FIB were elevated and HF183 was detected, while in groundwater and surface water sucralose, carbamazepine, primidone, and acetaminophen were detected. These data suggest that groundwater and surface water in North Fort Myers are coupled and contaminated by septic system effluent, which is negatively affecting water quality and contributing to the maintenance and intensification of downstream HABs.

Residue level, occurrence characteristics and ecological risk of pesticides in typical farmland-river interlaced area of Baiyang Lake upstream, China

Baiyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in North China, playing an important role in aquatic products production and eco-environment improvement. Traditional organochlorine pesticides were not enough to reflect ecological risk. We performed the high-throughput and non-targeted screening to identify the high-residue and wide-distribution pesticides at farmland-river interlaced area. We firstly reported the residue level and spatio-temporal distribution of typical pesticides in soils and waters (SP1–SP13) near Fuhe river in 2020–2021. The mean recoveries of eight pesticides ranged from 79.4 to 129%. The residues were 0.250–3530 ng/L (water) and 2.79 × 10⁻³–647 μg/kg dw (soil), respectively. Thiamethoxam was dominant with the high-residue proportion (HRP) of 53–95% (water, HRP > 50%) and 63–97% (soil, HRP > 60%), respectively. Most of pesticides almost have no significant season-change. The risk quotient (RQ) model results showed that although most pesticides have no aquatic risk (RQ < 0.01), carbendazim and propionazole deserved attention. The individual thiamethoxam at nearly half of the sites exhibited high terrestrial risk (RQ, 1.070–1.682), while propiconazole was at medium risk (SP1, SP2, SP8, and SP9) and high risk (SP12). The RQ_all were in the range of 0.4541–3.327 (earthworm), 0.0239–0.4552 (algae), 0.1094–1.103 (aquatic invertabrates), and 0.1657–1.923 (fish), respectively, so co-residue caused joint toxic effect to aquatic invertebrates.

Quality Control of Emerging Contaminants in Marine Aquaculture Systems by Spot Sampling-Optimized Solid Phase Extraction and Passive Sampling

The presence of organic pollutants such as pesticides and pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment, and especially in regions where fish farms are installed, is a matter of major importance due to their possible risks to ecosystems and public health. The necessity of their detection leads to the development of sensitive, reliable, economical and environmentally friendly analytical methods for controlling their residue in various environmental substrates. In the present work, a solid-phase extraction method was developed, optimized and validated for the analysis of 7 pesticides and 25 pharmaceuticals in seawater using LC-HR-LTQ/Orbitrap-MS. The method was then applied in seawater samples collected from an aquaculture farm located in the Ionian Sea, Greece, in order to evaluate environmental pollution levels. None of the pesticides were detected, while paracetamol was the only pharmaceutical compound that was found (at trace levels). At the same time, passive sampling was conducted as an alternative screening technique, showing the presence of contaminants that were not detected with spot sampling. Among them, irgarol was detected and as far as pharmaceuticals is concerned, trimethoprim and sulfadiazine were found; however, all positive findings were at the very low ppt levels posing no threat to the aquatic environment.

Metal organic frameworks for electrochemical sensor applications: A review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are broadly known as porous coordination polymers, synthesized by metal-based nodes and organic linkers. MOFs are used in various fields like catalysis, energy storage, sensors, drug delivery etc., due to their versatile properties (tailorable pore size, high surface area, and exposed active sites). This review presents a detailed discussion of MOFs as an electrochemical sensor and their enhancement in the selectivity and sensitivity of the sensor. These sensors are used for the detection of heavy metal ions like Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Hg²⁺, and Cu²⁺ from groundwater. Various types of organic pollutants are also detected from the water bodies using MOFs. Furthermore, electrochemical sensing of antibiotics, phenolic compounds, and pesticides has been explored. In addition to this, there is also a detailed discussion of metal nano-particles and metal-oxide based composites which can sense various compounds like glucose, amino acids, uric acid etc. The review will be helpful for young researchers, and an inspiration to future research as challenges and future opportunities of MOF-based electrochemical sensors are also reported.

Suspecting screening "known unknown" pesticides and transformation products in soil at pesticide manufacturing sites

The occurrence and risks of pesticides and their transformation products in soil at the manufacturing sites are "known unknowns." In this study, pesticides and their transformation products were screened in soil at 6 pesticide manufacturing sites across China using liquid and gas chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The screening strategy can correctly identify 75% of 209 pesticides spiked at 50 ng g^-1. A total of 212 pesticides were identified; 23.1% of pesticides detected were above 200 ng g^-1, and the maximum concentration was 1.5 × 10⁵ ng g^-1. The risk quotients of 20% pesticides were greater than 1, and the maximum risk quotient of imidacloprid reached 6.3 × 10⁴. The most recent site showed a larger number of pesticides with higher diversity, whereas older sites were dominated by organochlorine insecticides. The extended screen identified 163 transformation products with concentrations up to 6.6 × 10⁴ ng g^-1. Half of the transformation products had higher concentrations than their parent compounds, and metabolic ratios up to 371 were observed. The results of this study validate the prevalence of pesticides and their transformation products in soil at pesticide manufacturing sites. The results also highlight the importance of comprehensive screening at industrial sites and call for improved management and regulation of pesticide manufacturing, particularly for in-service facilities.

Pesticide residue levels in surface water, using a passive sampler and in the sediment along the littoral zone of Lake Ziway at selected sites

Diaion® HP-20 resin passive samplers deployed in water and sediment samples collected from Lake Ziway were analyzed for 30 organochlorine, organophosphorus, carboxamide, and pyrethroid pesticide residues. The samples were collected from purposely selected sampling stations in five sites on Lake Ziway. Levels of selected pesticides were determined by GC–MS/MS in all samples. p,p′DDE and boscalid residues were the only detected pesticides in sediment samples. Similarly, only metalaxyl and boscalid residues were recovered from HP-20 resins. The concentration of p,p′DDE and boscalid in sediment ranged from 0.66–7.23 and 0.1–15.26 ng g−1 dry weight respectively. The presence of p,p′DDE but no other metabolites of DDT in all sediment samples indicated that DDT residues in Ziway Lake were aged and probably originated from the weathered agricultural soils of the surrounding region. The highest level of boscalid was recorded at Site 2 (near the floriculture enterprises) both in sediment and in HP-20 resins with a mean concentration of 11.8 ng g−1 dw and 39.6 ng g−1 disk respectively. However, the concertation of metalaxyl was the highest in the HP-20 resins deployed at Site1 and Site 4 (near the intensive small-scale vegetable farm) with a mean concentration of 54.7 ng g−1 disk and 54.3 ng g−1 disk respectively. Generally, most sampling sites of p,p′DDE were found to have a moderate ecological risk based on levels specified in the sediment quality standards. Moreover, the relatively high boscalid and metalaxyl levels in HP-20 deployed in Lake Ziway would be the result of recent intensive pesticide use by floriculture enterprises and small-scale vegetable farmers in the region. A spatial variation on the accumulation of detected pesticides among the sampling sites depends on the anthropogenic activities, around the lake from the point and non-point sources. Although most of the analyzed pesticides were below the detectable limit, further studies and continued monitoring of currently used pesticide residues in the Lake are highly recommended.

Bentazone in water and human urine in Wuhan, central China: exposure assessment

Bentazone is a widely used post-emergence herbicide, while no data was available on its concentrations in tap water from China and in urine among the general population. It was determined in the source (Wuhan section of the Yangtze River watershed), treated, and tap water (n = 20, 20, and 170, respectively) in different seasons (2019) in Wuhan, central China. Also, urine samples (n = 38) collected from healthy adults in Wuhan (September 2020) were analyzed to characterize its urinary concentration. Bentazone was detected in all the source and treated water samples. Its concentrations in the source water in July were higher than those in February (median: 17.9 ng/L vs. 2.86 ng/L) (p < 0.05). It cannot be removed efficiently (27.8-27.9%) by conventional drinking water treatment using NaClO, but it can be efficiently removed by using chlorine dioxide or ozone combined with activated carbon. Bentazone was frequently detected (detection frequency: 96.3%) in 160 tap water samples (underwent conventional treatment) (median: 1.95 ng/L, range: <0.02-47.0 ng/L), while it was not detectable in tap water samples that underwent ozone combined with activated carbon. Seasonal variations were found, with the lowest median concentration (ng/L) in April (0.46) and the highest in July (17.6). In addition, bentazone was frequently (92.1%) detected in human urine samples (median: 0.02 ng/mL; range: < 0.01-0.11 ng/mL). The estimated daily intake of bentazone based on its median concentration in tap water (0.04 ng/kg-body weight [bw]/day) accounted for approximately 8% of that based on the median urinary concentration (0.48 ng/kg-bw/day). This is the first time to characterize its occurrence in drinking water from China and its occurrence in the urine of the general population.

Assessment of Environmental Pollution and Human Exposure to Pesticides by Wastewater Analysis in a Seven-Year Study in Athens, Greece

Pesticides have been used in large amounts around the world for decades and are responsible for environmental pollution and various adverse effects on human health. Analysis of untreated wastewater can deliver useful information on pesticides’ use in a particular area and allow the assessment of human exposure to certain substances. A wide-scope screening method, based on liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry, was applied, using both target and suspect screening methodologies. Daily composite influent wastewater samples were collected for seven or eight consecutive days in Athens between 2014 and 2020 and analyzed for 756 pesticides, their environmental transformation products and their human metabolites. Forty pesticides were quantified at mean concentrations up to 4.9 µg/L (tralkoxydim). The most abundant class was fungicides followed by herbicides, insect repellents, insecticides and plant growth regulators. In addition, pesticide transformation products and/or metabolites were detected with high frequency, indicating that research should be focused on them. Human exposure was evaluated using the wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) approach and 3-ethyl-carbamoyl benzoic acid and cis-1,2,3,6-tetrahydrophthalimide were proposed as potential WBE biomarkers. Wastewater analysis revealed the presence of unapproved pesticides and indicated that there is an urgent need to include more transformation products in target databases.

Assessment of pesticide residues in waters and soils of a vineyard region and its temporal evolution

Sustainable agriculture practices and integrated pest management for avoiding environmental pollution are necessary to maintain a high yield in vineyard areas. Pesticide residues in groundwater in a vineyard area of La Rioja (Spain) have been evaluated in previous years, and they could now have varied after farmers have adopted the different measures recommended. Accordingly, this research's objectives were (i) to evaluate the occurrence and seasonal distribution (spring, summer, and autumn samplings) of pesticides (36) plus their degradation products (DP) (11) in water and soil samples (23 + 15) in La Rioja (Northern Spain), and (ii) to compare the current water quality (2019) with that determined previously (2011). A multi-residue method based on solid phase extraction (for water samples) or solid liquid extraction (for soil samples) and high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) was used to determine and quantify pesticides. The results reveal the presence in waters of 30 compounds from those selected (15 fungicides + 2 DP, 7 insecticides + 1 DP, and 3 herbicides +2 DP), with 14 of them at concentrations > 0.1 μg L^-1 (water quality threshold for human consumption). The highest number of compounds was detected in summer (waters) and spring (soils). The pesticides most frequently detected in water samples were the fungicides metalaxyl, tebuconazole, and boscalid, with the last one being the compound found in the highest number of soil samples. The comparison of water pollution in 2011 and 2019 indicates a significant decrease in the total concentration of herbicides, fungicides and insecticides in 95-100%, 76-90%, and 42-85% of samples in the three campaigns, respectively. The results indicate that an optimized and sustainable use of pesticides in intensive and high-yield agricultural areas could reduce environmental pollution.

The role of soils in regulation of freshwater and coastal water quality

Water quality regulation is an important ecosystem service function of soil. In this study, the mechanism by which soil regulates water quality was reviewed, and the effects of soil management on water quality were explored. A scientometrics analysis was also conducted to explore the research fields and hotspots of water quality regulation of soil in the past 5 years. This review found that the pollutants entering the soil can be mitigated by precipitation, adsorption and desorption, ion exchange, redox and metabolic decomposition. As an optimal substrate, soil in constructed wetlands has perfect performance in the adsorption and passivation of pollutants such as nitrogen, phosphorus and heavy metals in water, and degradation of pesticides and emerging contaminants. Mangrove wetlands play an important role in coastal zone protection and coastal water quality restoration. However, the excessive application of agricultural chemicals causes soil overload, which leads to the occurrence of agricultural non-point source pollution. Under the dual pressures of climate change and food insecurity in the future, developing environmentally friendly and economically feasible sustainable soil management measures is crucial for maintaining the water purification function of soil by relying on the accurate quantification of soil function based on big data and modelling. Multiple stressors shape invertebrate assemblages and reduce their trophic niche: A case study in a regulated stream

Few studies have addressed how the diversity of basal resources change with stream regulation and the potential consequences on river biota. We sampled invertebrates above and below a series of dams, over two years, at both downwelling and upwelling zones. In each zone, we recorded the daily temperature and flow variations, estimated the algal development, measured the available resources, and analysed carbon and nitrogen stable isotope compositions of the invertebrate community. The number of hydrological pulses were typically higher below the dams than above the dams especially during high-flow periods whereas the groundwater outlets had minor effects on invertebrate assemblages. Invertebrate abundance, richness and diversity tended to decrease below the dams. Co-inertia analysis showed that flow and temperature variations, and eutrophication explained most of the variance in the invertebrate assemblages, which comprised a higher number of resilient taxa below than above the dams. The proportions of pesticide-sensitive invertebrates were lower below the dams and ovoviviparous and more generalist taxa were prominent. We did not observe the expected CPOM decrease and FPOM increase downstream. Accordingly, the proportions of each functional feeding group were remarkably similar above and below the dams despite the long distance between the sectors (>100 kms). The diversity of basal resources used within assemblages progressively increased downstream above dams. In contrast, the diversity of resources used by organisms below the dams decreased from upstream to downstream suggesting a significant influence of flow regulation on aquatic food webs. Finally, the shorter trophic chains for the invertebrate assemblages below the dams suggests that the effects of stream regulation and eutrophication induced a simplification of food webs. To our knowledge, this study is the first to connect taxonomic and functional trait changes in response to multiple stressors with the associated modifications in isotopic niches within aquatic invertebrate assemblages.

CONTEXT

Understanding how stream regulation and associated anthropogenic pressures act on aquatic assemblages and trophic niches is necessary to guide management actions.

GOAL

We aimed to investigate the functional responses (traits and trophic niches) of aquatic invertebrate assemblages to stream regulation and eutrophication.

METHODS

We used univariate and multivariate analyses to compare the invertebrate assemblages above and below the dams and to assess the contributions of hydrology (including groundwater supplies to the river), temperature and eutrophication to the variability in the composition of invertebrate assemblages. We also considered the relative utilization of a selected set of traits describing invertebrate resilience, resistance and specialization to address the potential functional effects of stream regulation on invertebrate assemblages. Finally, carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses allowed us to characterize the length and width of invertebrate assemblage food webs as related to the availability and diversity of basal resources.

RESULTS

Invertebrate abundance and richness generally decreased below the dams, with the highest impacts on insect taxa. Co-inertia analysis showed that stream regulation and eutrophication were main drivers of the aquatic invertebrate assemblages. The analysis separated the sites above and below the dams according to flow and temperature variation, whereas eutrophication appeared as a secondary stressor that separated the sites within each sector. Furthermore, the series of dams resulted in (i) a higher proportion of resilient (e.g., multivoltine) and resistant (ovoviviparous) taxa and a majority of generalists in assemblages below dams, (ii) an impact on the classical dynamics of CPOM (decrease) and FPOM (increase) sources from upstream to downstream, and (iii) a reduction in the diversity of resource use and in the trophic chain length of invertebrate assemblages below dams. The cooler and less oxygenated upwelling zones had lower invertebrate abundance; however, contrary to our expectation, the variation in the groundwater supply did not affect the composition of epigean invertebrate assemblages.

CONCLUSION

This study provides insights about the impacts of flow regime alteration and eutrophication on food webs that may have been caused by regulation of permanent streams. To our knowledge, this is the first to connect taxonomic and functional trait changes in response to multiple stressors with the associated modifications in energy fluxes in aquatic invertebrate assemblages. This study suggests that bed stability, which is associated with a reduction in channel mobility below the dams and with moderate eutrophication, may provide the shelter and resources that can locally favour invertebrate assemblage dynamics and lessen the effects of flow regulation. In addition, the study suggests that the biological trait-based approach and isotope analysis are complementary approaches for addressing ecosystem functioning. The relative utilization of traits indicates the functional potential of aquatic invertebrate assemblages to face multiple stressors whereas isotope analysis is an expression of the actual effect of the stressors on the trophic structure of aquatic invertebrate assemblages.

Remediation of bentazone contaminated water by Trametes versicolor: Characterization, identification of transformation products, and implementation in a trickle-bed reactor under non-sterile conditions

Bentazone, an herbicide widely applied in rice and cereal crops, is widespread in the aquatic environment. This study evaluated the capacity of Trametes versicolor to remove bentazone from water. The fungus was able to completely remove bentazone after three days at Erlenmeyer-scale incubation. Both laccase and cytochrome P450 enzymatic systems were involved in bentazone degradation. A total of 19 transformation products (TPs) were identified to be formed during the process. The reactions involved in their formation included hydroxylations, oxidations, methylations, N-nitrosation, and dimerization. A laccase mediated radical mechanism was proposed for TP formation. In light of the results obtained at the Erlenmeyer scale, a trickle-bed reactor with T. versicolor immobilized on pine wood chips was set up to evaluate its stability during bentazone removal under non-sterile conditions. After 30 days of sequencing batch operation, an average bentazone removal of 48% was obtained, with a considerable contribution of adsorption onto the lignocellulosic support material. Bacterial contamination, which is the bottleneck in the implementation of fungal bioreactors, was successfully addressed by this particular system according to its maintained performance. This research is a pioneering step forward to the implementation of fungal bioremediation on a real scale.

Appraisal of water matrix on the removal of fungicide residues by heterogeneous photocatalytic treatment using UV-LED lamp as light source

In this study, the photocatalytic degradation of four fungicides, myclobutanil, penconazole and difenoconazole (triazole compounds) and boscalid (carboxamide), has been examined in different aqueous matrices (tap water, irrigation water and two WWPT effluents). Experiments were conducted at laboratory scale with different reagents-zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO₂), sodium persulphate (Na₂S₂O₈) and the combined systems ZnO/Na₂S₂O₈ and TiO₂/Na₂S₂O₈-in water exposed to UV-LED irradiation. Previously, the effect of catalyst and oxidant loading on the disappearance kinetics of the different fungicides was assessed to know maximum degradation efficiency. The influence of water matrices and pesticide loading in removal effectiveness has been evaluated. It was observed a greater efficiency in processes conducted using the tandems ZnO/Na₂S₂O₈ and TiO₂/Na₂S₂O₈ in irrigation and tap waters. Results showed that UV-LED are a suitable alternative for tackling the removal of organic pollutants in water.

Comparison of imidacloprid, propiconazole, and nanopropiconazole effects on the development, behavior, and gene expression biomarkers of the Pacific oyster (Magallana gigas)

Coastal areas are final recipients of various contaminants including pesticides. The effects of pesticides on non-target organisms are often unclear, especially at environmentally relevant concentrations. This study investigated the impacts of insecticide imidacloprid (IMI) and fungicide propiconazole (PRO), some of the most detected pesticides in the Arcachon Bay in France. This work also included the research of propiconazole nanoformulation (nanoPRO). The effects were assessed studying the development of the early life stages of the Pacific oyster (Magallana gigas). Oyster embryos were exposed for 24, 30, and 42 h (depending on the endpoint) at 24 °C to environmentally relevant concentrations of the two pesticides as well as to nanoPRO. The research focused on sublethal endpoints such as the presence of developmental malformations, alterations of locomotion patterns, or changes in the gene expression levels. No developmental abnormalities were observed after exposure to environmental concentrations detected in the Arcachon Bay in recent years (maximal detected concentration of IMI and PRO were 174 ng/L and 29 ng/L, respectively). EC₅₀ of PRO and nanoPRO were comparable, 2.93 ± 1.35 and 2.26 ± 1.36 mg/L, while EC₅₀ of IMI exceeded 200 mg/L. IMI did not affect larval behavior. PRO affected larval movement trajectory and decreased average larvae swimming speed (2 μg/L), while nanoPRO increased the maximal larvae swimming speed (0.02 μg/L). PRO upregulated especially genes linked to reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and detoxification. NanoPRO effects on gene expression were less pronounced - half of the genes were altered in comparison with PRO. IMI induced a strong dose-response impact on the genes linked to the detoxification, ROS production, cell cycle, and apoptosis regulation. In conclusion, our results suggest that current pesticide concentrations detected in the Arcachon Bay are safe for the Pacific oyster early development, but they might have a small direct effect via altered gene expressions, whose longer-term impacts cannot be ruled out.

The role of two organic amendments to modify the environmental fate of S-metolachlor in agricultural soils

S-metolachlor is a widely used herbicide that may contaminate groundwater when applied to irrigated crops, especially when the soil has a low organic carbon (OC) content. The objective here was to assess the capacity of two organic wastes, namely, green compost (GC) and pelletised organo-mineral manure fertilizer (PM), applied to two soils (S) with different textures at a rate of 10% dry weight to modify the fate of S-metolachlor. The herbicide's Freundlich adsorption coefficient (Kf) increased within a range of 3.2-8.2 times in S + GC and 3.8-6.8 times in S + PM. A positive correlation between adsorption and OC and the coefficient of variation of the OC normalised adsorption coefficients (Kf_oc) higher than 20% indicated the evident influence on this process of soil OC content and its nature. The increase in adsorption did not prevent the dissipation of S-metolachlor in the amended soils, although the degradation rate decreased up to ~2 times or was not significantly modified across the different soil types. The S-metolachlor metabolites, metolachlor ethane sulfonic acid and metolachlor oxanilic acid, were detected in the herbicide's dissipation in the unamended soils, but they were not detected in the amended soils. The mobility experiments indicated leached amounts of S-metolachlor higher than 50% in unamended soil. The amounts decreased 1.1-1.7 times and 1.7-1.8 times in the S + GC and S + PM when a saturated flow was applied. Moreover, breakthrough curves indicated a slow leaching kinetics of herbicide in amended soils, with low concentrations continuously detected in the leachates together with a decrease in the maximum peak concentration. The results show the effect of the application of organic wastes especially in sandy soils to promote the immobilisation and/or degradation of S-metolachlor, avoiding its transfer to other environmental compartments.

Application Intensity and Spatial Distribution of Three Major Herbicides from Agricultural and Nonagricultural Practices in the Central Plain of Thailand

The herbicides glyphosate, paraquat, and 2,4-D play a significant role in Thailand. This paper is among the first study to describe the intensity of herbicide application and illustrate how the herbicides are extensively distributed over a large area through both agricultural and nonagricultural practices. Using a quick, economical, and simplified method of Material Flow Analysis together with spatial analysis, better data for the analysis of possible environmental herbicide contamination, human exposure, and related health risks for the general public and applicators can be developed. The findings from this study showed that in the study province, about 2.2 million kg of the active ingredients from the three targeted herbicides is applied annually. Pathway flow modeling with spatial analysis identified several local hotspots of concern based on the type of herbicide and crop/activity where it was used. Cassava planting was found to have the highest herbicide application activity, whereas rice cultivation was the major contributor of total herbicide mass, due to the wide area of cultivation in the province. The herbicide most likely to be applied at rates higher than recommended was 2,4-D, particularly on cassava and sugarcane farms.

Environmentally relevant concentrations of boscalid exposure affects the neurobehavioral response of zebrafish by disrupting visual and nervous systems

Boscalid is a persistent fungicide that is frequently detected in surface waters and may be neurotoxic to aquatic organisms. Herein, we evaluated the effects of environmentally relevant boscalid concentrations to zebrafish to explore its potentially neurotoxic mechanisms of effect. Behavioral responses (swimming, phototaxis, and predation), histopathology, transcriptomics, biochemical parameter analysis and gene expression of larval and adult zebrafish following boscalid treatment were assessed. We found that boscalid significantly inhibited the locomotor ability and phototactic response of larvae after an 8-d exposure, and altered the locomotor activity, predation trajectories and ability in adults after a 21-d exposure. It was noted that predation rates of zebrafish were significantly decreased by 30% and 100% after exposure to 0.1 and 1.0 mg/L boscalid, respectively. Adverse alterations in the cell differentiation of eyes and brain injury were also observed in both larvae and adults following boscalid exposure. The expression of genes related to neurodevelopment, neurotransmission, eye development, and visual function, in conjunction with RNA-Seq results, indicated that boscalid may impair visual phototransduction and nervous system processes in larval zebrafish. Conclusively, boscalid exposure may affect the neurobehavioral response of zebrafish by impairing proper visual and nervous system function.

Understanding the origins of herbicides metabolites in an agricultural watershed through their spatial and seasonal variations

The aim of this study is to understand the spatial and seasonal variations of persistent herbicides metabolites and to determine their origins in the Vilaine River watershed, Britany-France. Improving knowledge on herbicides metabolites sources and seasonality is important for drinking water resource management. Data were collected at 13 sampling stations during five sampling campaigns in 2016 and 2017. Relations between water quality parameters, herbicides and metabolites were analyzed using statistical methods. The influence of land use and wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) on streams water quality has been identified. Cluster Analysis revealed that two groups of sampling stations can be described as "urban" with stations downstream the urban area and as "agricultural" with stations located downstream of the watershed. Chloroacetamids metabolites have been associated together with nitrates and agricultural areas as could be expected. Thus, the drinking water treatment plant located in the estuary of the Vilaine River is exposed to high metolachlor ESA and nitrate loads all year long. Aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) is associated to anthropogenic urban contamination and nutrient loads. AMPA has its major sources in both glyphosate and phosphonate detergents issued from WWTP. This can help to adapt surface water treatment process and water management policies concerning herbicides metabolites.

Use of Postregistration Monitoring Data to Evaluate the Ecotoxicological Risks of Pesticides to Surface Waters: A Case Study with Chlorpyrifos in the Iberian Peninsula

Chemical monitoring data sets such as those provided by the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) offer opportunities to evaluate the ecological risks of pesticides under large spatiotemporal scales and to evaluate the protectiveness of the current prospective risk-assessment framework. As a case study, we used the monitoring data set for the insecticide chlorpyrifos to perform a probabilistic risk assessment for Iberian surface-water ecosystems. The specific objectives of the study were 1) to assess the occurrence of chlorpyrifos in relation to different agricultural production land uses, 2) to assess the spatiotemporal variation in the exceedance of the European WFD short- and long-term environmental quality standards (maximum allowable concentration environmental quality standard [MAC-EQS] and annual average [AA] EQS), and 3) to perform a probabilistic risk assessment for freshwater invertebrates. A database that contains chlorpyrifos concentrations from 14 600 surface water samples taken between 2012 and 2017 in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) was analyzed, and chlorpyrifos was detected in 21% of these samples. The MAC-EQS was exceeded in 2% of the cases, whereas the AA-EQS was exceeded in 18% of the cases. The majority of the exceedances took place in the littoral areas of the eastern and southeastern parts of the Iberian Peninsula, particularly in areas with dominant citrus production during late spring, late summer, and autumn. The present study indicates unacceptable risks posed by chlorpyrifos to Iberian surface waters over the study period, although it was approved for use in Europe. The present study supports the need to perform further postregistration monitoring assessments with other pesticides following similar approaches, which can help to identify possible pesticide-misuse practices and improvements of the prospective risk-assessment framework. Environmental risk assessment of priority biocidal substances on Polish surface water sample

The EU directive 2013/39/EU has incorporated four biocidal compounds as priority substances: diuron, isoproturon, cybutryne, and terbutryn. The research was undertaken to determine the concentration of biocides in surface waters in three locations in southern Poland: the Wisła River in Kraków, the Wisłoka River in Mielec, and the drainage ditch draining water from arable fields located near Mielec. Environmental samples were taken in two series: winter (February) and spring (May and June). The analyses were carried out using gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. The seasonality of biocides in surface waters was observed. In winter samples, the concentrations were below MQL, while in spring, they ranged from a few to several dozen nanograms per liter. The highest concentrations of all analyzed compounds were recorded in water taken from the Wisła River. According to directive 2013/39/EU, the maximum allowable concentration was exceeded only in the case of cybutryne in water from the Wisła, both in May and in June. The assessment of the toxicity with the tested compounds was defined based on the Environmental Risk Assessment method. Low risk was estimated for diuron and isoproturon, while moderate risk for terbutryn and cybutryne.

Comparative evaluation of river chemical status based on WFD methodology and CCME water quality index

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) methodology, proposed by the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Greece (WFD-MEEG), and the Canadian Council of Ministers of Environment Water Quality Index (CCME-WQI) are comparatively applied to evaluate the chemical status of a major transboundary river. Water quality parameters were monitored at 11 sites along the main stream of the river and its main tributaries, and at five sites in the reservoirs, on a monthly frequency, in the period from May 2008 to May 2009. Water temperature (T), dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and electrical conductivity (EC) were measured in-situ, while water samples were collected for the determination of total suspended solids (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrite-, nitrate- and ammonium-nitrogen, total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), ortho-phosphates (OP), total phosphorus (TP), and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a). The water samples were also analyzed for the determination of seven heavy metals (i.e., Cd, Pb, Hg, Ni, Cr, Cu, Zn) and 33 priority substances, as listed in Annex II of EU Directive 2008/105/EC. The results showed that the physicochemical parameters (i.e., T, DO, pH, EC, inorganic nitrogen, TKN, OP, TP, TSS, and Chl-a) were within the natural range. The mean concentration of the measured heavy metals did not exceed the limits set by WHO (2003, 2017) for drinking water. Regarding the priority substances, some of them (i.e., anthracene, fluoranthene, and polyaromatic hydrocarbons) were measured in various stations at higher concentrations than the Annual Average Environmental Quality Standards (AA-EQS). Based on the WFD-MEEG methodology, the river water was in the 'good' quality class, while according to CCME-WQI the river quality ranged from 'marginal' to 'good' category. It seems that CCME-WQI is stricter than WFD-MEEG but could be a WQI appropriate for use.

Exposure to Boscalid Induces Reproductive Toxicity of Zebrafish by Gender-Specific Alterations in Steroidogenesis

Boscalid is a succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor fungicide and is frequently detected in surface water. Due to the frequent detection of boscalid, we evaluated its impact on the reproduction of adult zebrafish following a 21 d exposure to 0, 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 mg/L. Following exposure to boscalid, the fertility of female zebrafish and fertilization rate of spawning eggs were reduced in a concentration-dependent manner up to a respective 87% and 20% in the highest concentration. A significant 16% reduction in the percentage of late vitellogenic oocytes was noted in ovaries, and a significant 74% reduction in the percentage of spermatids in testis was also observed after treatment with 1.0 mg/L. 17β-Estradiol (E2) concentrations decreased significantly in females (34% decrease) but significantly increased in males (15% increase) following 1.0 mg/L boscalid treatment. The expression of genes (such as era, er2b, cyp19a, and cyp19b) related to the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad-liver (HPGL) axis was significantly altered and positively correlated with E2 concentrations in female and male zebrafish (p < 0.05). Molecular docking results revealed that the binding modes between boscalid and target proteins (ER and CYP19) of zebrafish were similar to that of the reference compounds and the target proteins. The binding energies indicate that boscalid may have a weak estrogen-like binding effect or CYP19 inhibition, potentially altering the HPGL axis, thereby reducing E2 concentrations and fecundity in females. In contrast, boscalid caused significant induction of E2 steroidogenesis and subsequent feminization of gonads in males, indicating gender-specific adverse outcome pathways.

High Value-Added Use of Citrus Industrial Wastes in Agriculture: Semisynthesis and Anti-Tobacco Mosaic Virus/Insecticidal Activities of Ester Derivatives of Limonin Modified in the B Ring

Globally, the citrus industry produces various wastes, which contain a great deal of limonoids. In order for the sustainable development of the citrus industry, and considering the diverse bioactivities of limonoids, a series of ester derivatives were constructed by structural modification of limonin in the B ring. Furthermore, two seven-membered lactone derivatives of limonin and obacunone with a novel skeleton in the B ring were obtained by the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation rearrangement. The steric structures of six key compounds 3a, 3b, 4m, 4n, 6, and 7 were determined by X-ray crystallography. It demonstrated that the molar ratio of 3a (7α-isomer) and 3b (7β-isomer) depended on the mixed solvents in the reduction system. The anti-tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) activities under three different modes of action for most of the tested compounds were as the following sequence: inactivation effect > protection effect > curative effect. It was noteworthy that compound 4aa displayed the most potent anti-TMV/insect growth inhibitory activities, which indicated that the introduction of the phenylacryloyloxy group at the C-7β position of limonin could significantly improve its agricultural biological activities. This study will pave the way for future value-added application of citrus industrial wastes and provide strong evidence for the discovery of sustainable biopesticides based on limonoids.

Occurrence, source and ecotoxicological risk assessment of pesticides in surface water of Wujin District (northwest of Taihu Lake), China

This study investigated the occurrence and distribution of pesticides in surface water (lakes, major rivers and tributaries) and potential discharge sources (fish ponds, livestock and poultry farms, and sewage treatment plants) in Wujin District (northwest of Taihu Lake), Jiangsu province, China. An analytical liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was developed for 38 pesticides, which was applied in the monitoring of 240 surface water samples and 76 potential discharge source samples. Eleven insecticides and five fungicides with temporal and spatial variation were detected in surface water. The total pesticide concentrations in surface water in different seasons were as follows: March > August > June > November. The two most polluting and widespread pesticides were carbendazim (maximum concentration 508 ng L^-1, detection rate 100%) and imidacloprid (maximum concentration 438 ng L^-1, detection rate 88%). Gehu Lake (S46) and Sanshangang River (S12) were seriously polluted water bodies. Seven insecticides and four fungicides were detected in the potential discharge sources; and their composition changed significantly with the seasons. The concentrations of detected organophosphorus pesticides and neonicotinoids (e.g. acetamiprid in March and dichlorvos in November) in a few non-agricultural planting sources were far greater than those detected in surface water, and hence a few fish ponds, livestock and poultry farms, and sewage treatment plants might be the potential discharge sources of pesticides in the surrounding surface water. The estimated input flux of the studied pesticides from upstream rivers to Taihu Lake was 141.95 kg a^-1. Furthermore, more attention should be paid to the medium or high aquatic ecotoxicological risk presented by the levels of organophosphorus pesticides, carbamates, and benzimidazoles.

The first report of selected herbicides and fungicides in water and fish from a highly utilized and polluted freshwater urban impoundment

Many of South Africa's freshwater impoundments are compromised by pesticide pollution, and the Roodeplaat Dam, near Pretoria, is no exception. This paper is, to the best of our knowledge, the first report of the herbicides Dacthal, metribuzin, simazine, tebuthiuron, terbuthylazine, and the fungicides azoxystrobin, carbendazim, epoxiconazole, metalaxyl (Ridomil), propiconazole, pyrimethanil and thiabendazole in a South African freshwater impoundment. This short note reports on the screening results of water and muscle tissue samples against a comprehensive library of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides in the polluted Roodeplaat Dam. Muscle samples of Oreochromis mossambicus screened positive for p,p'-DDE and p,p'-DDD and for DCPA (chlorthal-methyl). The muscle tissue of Clarias gariepinus screened positive for p,p'-DDE and p,p'-DDD, chlorpyrifos, trans-chlordane, DCPA and terbuthylazine. The presence of these pesticides, herbicides and fungicides in this impoundment is of great concern as there is substantial evidence of adverse health effects in fish exposed to these chemicals.

Monitoring and environmental risk assessment of pesticide residues and some of their degradation products in natural waters of the Spanish vineyard region included in the Denomination of Origin Jumilla

Water pollution by pesticides used in agriculture is currently a major concern both in Spain and in Europe as a whole, prompting the need to evaluate water quality and ecological risk in areas of intensive agriculture. This study involved monitoring pesticide residues and certain degradation products in surface and ground waters of the Denomination of Origin (DO) Jumilla vineyard area in Spain. Sixty-nine pesticides were selected and evaluated at twenty-one sampling points using a multi-residue analytical method, based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) and analysis by liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS), providing reliable results. Twenty-six compounds from those selected were detected in the samples analyzed (eleven insecticides including one degradation product, nine herbicides, and six fungicides) and fifteen of them were found in concentrations over 0.1 μg L^-1 (upper threshold established by the EU for pesticides detected in waters for human consumption). Indoxacarb was present in more than 70% of the samples, being the most frequently detected compound in water samples. Some pesticides were ubiquitous in all the water samples. Ecotoxicological risk indicators, toxic units (TUs) and risk quotients (RQs), for algae, Daphnia magna and fish were calculated to estimate the environmental risk of the presence of pesticides in waters. The compounds with the highest risk were the herbicides pendimethalin, with RQ values > 1 for the three aquatic organisms, and diflufenican, posing a high risk for algae and fish, and the insecticide chlorpyrifos, with a high risk for Daphnia magna and fish. The ∑TUi determined for water at each sampling point posed only a high risk for the three aquatic organisms in a sample. These results are important for considering the selection of pesticides with less environmental risk in intensive agricultural areas.

Ecotoxicity of chlorpyrifos to aquatic organisms: A review

Pesticides play an important role in promoting agricultural development, while their unreasonable use has led to environmental problems. Chlorpyrifos (CPF), a typical organophosphate pesticide, is used globally as an insecticide in agriculture. The extensive application of CPF has resulted in water contamination, and CPF has been detected in rivers, lakes, seawater, and even in rain. In the present review, CPF was selected due to its extensive use in agriculture and higher detection rate in surface waters. In this review we summarised the evidence related to CPF pollution and focused on discussing the ecotoxicity of CPF to aquatic systems and revealed the mechanism of action of CPF. The aim of this literature review was to summarise the knowledge of the toxicity to marine and freshwater organisms of CPF as well as try to select a series of sensitive biomarkers, which are suitable for ecotoxicological assessment and environmental monitoring in aquatic systems.

Differential responses of larval zebrafish to the fungicide propamocarb: Endpoints at development, locomotor behavior and oxidative stress

The fungicide propamocarb (PM) is widely used to protect cucumbers, tomatoes and other plants from pathogens. According to previous studies, PM could be detected in the aquatic system in some area. However, the toxic effects of PM on zebrafish received very limited attention. In this study, we examined the toxic effects of various concentration of PM on the endpoints of development, locomotor behavior and oxidative stress in larval zebrafish. It was observed that PM exposure delayed embryonic development, inhibited hatchability at 60 and 72 h postfertilization and increased heart rate. After PM exposure, the larval zebrafish showed abnormal free swimming behavior and the swimming behavior in response to light-dark transition, indicating that PM had the potential to induce neurotoxicity. Moreover, PM exposure also affected the enzymatic activity of acetylcholinesterase and dopamine and the transcriptional level of genes related to neurotoxicity. In addition, PM exposure not only affects catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity but also affects the transcription level of various genes. We believed that PM induced oxidative stress was also a possible reason to cause neurotoxicity in larval zebrafish. In summary, our results suggested that PM could disturb the endpoints at development, locomotor behavior and oxidative stress in larval zebrafish.

Pesticides in aquatic environments and their removal by adsorption methods

Although pesticides are widely used in agriculture, industry and households, they pose a risk to human health and ecosystems. Based on target organisms, the main types of pesticides are herbicides, insecticides and fungicides, of which herbicides accounted for 46% of the total pesticide usage worldwide. The movement of pesticides into water bodies occurs through run-off, spray drift, leaching, and sub-surface drainage, all of which have negative impacts on aquatic environments and humans. We sought to define the critical factors affecting the fluxes of contaminants into receiving waters. We also aimed to specify the feasibility of using sorbents to remove pesticides from waterways. In Karun River in Iran (1.21 × 10⁵ ng/L), pesticide concentrations are above regulatory limits. The concentration of pesticides in fish can reach 26.1 × 10³ μg/kg, specifically methoxychlor herbicide in Perca fluviatilis in Lithuania. During the last years, research has focused on elimination of organic pollutants, such as pesticides, from aqueous solution. Pesticide adsorption onto low-cost materials can effectively remediate contaminated waters. In particular, nanoparticle adsorbents and carbon-based adsorbents exhibit high performance (nearly 100%) in removing pesticides from water bodies.

Chronic exposure of zebrafish (Danio rerio) to flutolanil leads to endocrine disruption and reproductive disorders

The pesticide flutolanil has been detected in fish and aquatic environments, but its potential impact on the endocrine function is unknown. In this study, two-month zebrafish were exposed to the environmentally relevant concentrations of flutolanil for 60 days to examine the reproductive endpoints on the gonad endocrine system. Increased 17 beta-estradiol (17β-E2) content and 17β-E2/T ratio and decreased testosterone (T) in male suggested that flutolanil produces the estrogenic effect. In support of this view, vitellogene (vtg1, vtg2) and cytochrome P450 aromatase 19a (cyp19a) expression were up-regulated in the male liver. The levels of global DNA methylation were increased in ovary. Parental zebrafish exposure to different concentrations of flutolanil affected the offspring development as shown by short body length, and increased mortality. Thus, these results demonstrate that flutolanil exposure results in gonad endocrine disruption, decreased reproduction, and developmental toxicity in F1, highlighting the importance of assessing the potential environmental risks of flutolanil application.

The role of direct photolysis in the photodegradation of the herbicide bentazone in natural surface waters

The photochemical fate of the herbicide bentazone was assessed by lab experiments and modeling tools. Experimental and modeling results showed that bentazone is mainly photodegraded by direct photolysis in natural water samples, even in the presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) that can act as light-screening agent, photosensitizer and scavenger of reactive species. Even when it was dissolved in natural water samples containing different DOM amounts, the phototransformation kinetics of bentazone was unchanged compared to irradiation runs in ultrapure water. This finding suggests that the DOM and the other components of our samples did not affect the direct photolysis of bentazone by light-absorption competition, at least at the experimental optical path lengths, and did not induce significant indirect photodegradation by producing reactive transient species. Photochemical modeling in a lake-water photoreactivity scenario corroborated the observed experimental results, showing the predominant role of direct photolysis in the overall (direct + indirect) photodegradation of bentazone at different water depths and DOM contents. However, the model predicted a minor but non-negligible contribution of indirect photochemistry (i.e., reactions triggered by HO^•, CO₃^•- and ³CDOM*) to the herbicide degradation. This contribution (especially by ³CDOM*) could become crucial in deep and DOM-rich water bodies. Finally, several photoproducts formed by direct photolysis and HO^•-induced photodegradation were identified, which should not be particularly toxic for aquatic organisms and Vibrio fischeri bacteria.

Occurrence of pesticides in surface water, pesticides removal efficiency in drinking water treatment plant and potential health risk to consumers in Tengi River Basin, Malaysia

Agricultural activities have been arising along with the use of pesticides. The use of pesticides can impact not only on vector or other pest but also able to harm human health. Pesticide may leach from the irrigation of plant into the groundwater and in surface water. These waters could be sources of drinking water in a pesticides polluted area. This study aims to determine the occurrence pesticides in surface water and pesticides removal efficiency in a conventional drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) and the potential health risk to consumers. The study was conducted in Tanjung Karang, Selangor, Malaysia. Thirty river water samples and eighteen water samples from DWTP were collected. The water samples were extracted using solid phase extraction (SPE) before injected to the ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Five hundreds and ten respondents were interviewed using questionnaires to obtain information for health risk assessments. The results showed that propiconazole had the highest mean concentration (4493.1 ng/L) while pymetrozine had the lowest mean concentration (1.3 ng/L) in river water samples. The pesticides removal efficiencies in the conventional DWTP were 77% (imidacloprid), 86% (propiconazole and buprofezin), 88% (tebuconazole) and 100% (pymetrozine, tricyclazole, chlorantraniliprole, azoxystrobin and trifloxystrobin), respectively. The hazard quotients (HQs) and hazard index (HI) for all target pesticides were <1, indicating there was no significant chronic non-carcinogenic health risk due to consumption of the drinking water. Conventional DWTP was not able to completely remove four pesticide; thus, advanced treatment systems need to be considered to safeguard the health of the community in future.

Characterization of boscalid-induced oxidative stress and neurodevelopmental toxicity in zebrafish embryos

Boscalid is a widely used fungicide in agriculture and has been frequently detected in both environments and agricultural products. However, evidence on the neurotoxic effect of boscalid is scarce. In this study, zebrafish served as an animal model to investigate the toxic effects and mechanisms of boscalid on aquatic vertebrates or higher animals. And we unravelled that boscalid induced developmental defects associated with oxidative stress. Developmental defects, including head deformity, hypopigmentation, decreased number of newborn neurons, structural defects around the ventricle, enlarged intercellular space in the brain, and nuclear concentration, were observed in zebrafish embryos after boscalid exposure at 48 hpf. Interestingly, we found that boscalid might directly induce oxidative stress and alter the activity of ATPase, which in turn disrupted the expression of genes involved in neurodevelopment and transmitter-transmitting signalings and melanocyte differentiation and melanin synthesis signalings. Ultimately, the differentiation of nerve cells and melanocytes were both impacted and the synthesis of melanin was inhibited, leading to morphological abnormalities. Additionally, exposure to boscalid led to less and imbalance motion and altered tendency of locomotor in larval fish. Collectively, our results provide new evidences for a comprehensive assessment of its toxicity and a warning for its residues in environment and agricultural products.

Pesticides and herbicides

This paper provides a review of some important scientific articles published in the year 2018 about pesticides and herbicides. The literature review presented in this paper cover pesticides and herbicides presence as well as occurrence in the environment. The review is divided into four sections. Each of these sections highlight issues related to pesticides and herbicides on toxicology, ecology, risk assessment, modeling, and treatment strategies.

The environmental condition of an estuarine ecosystem disturbed by pesticides

Knowledge regarding the concentration levels resulting from the use of agricultural pesticides may indicate the nature of the controls necessary to reduce environmental and human health risks to an acceptable level. Therefore, the main goal of the present work was to assess the spatial and temporal occurrence of 35 pesticides in the River Sado estuary (Portugal) in 2017 and evaluate its environmental condition, as data for estuarine ecosystems is scarce. Since pesticides are very susceptible to matrix effects promoted by environmental samples, to attain the main goal, we developed a fast and almost solvent-free environmentally friendly method with a good performance for both estuarine surface water and sediment samples. Quantified residues were determined mostly during summer, in line with the pesticide application period. Five herbicides (alachlor, bentazon, metobromuron, metribuzin and triclopyr) were measured in the water before and after the production season, suggesting a long-term aquatic exposure. Sediment samples were less contaminated, since a lower number of quantified pesticides were found in the study area, in lower frequencies and lower concentrations. No potential high adverse effects of the use of agricultural pesticides were expected on the aquatic organisms of the Sado estuary, even considering the potential combination effect of pesticide mixtures.
