Temporal and spatial trends in riverine suspended sediment and associated polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAC) within the Athabasca oil sands region

Effects of naturally sourced bitumen samples from Alberta oil sands region (Canada) on aquatic benthic invertebrates: A case study with Chironomus riparius

Athabasca oil sands in Alberta, Canada, are large bitumen deposits and are one of the world's largest petroleum reserves. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the influence of this naturally occurring bitumen on freshwaters. Using laboratory-based exposure studies, we examined the life cycle responses of the aquatic midge Chironomus riparius to both naturally formed solid bitumen incorporated in the sediment and its corresponding aqueous extracts, denominated as elutriates. The 28-day partial life cycle assay involved bitumen samples from two distinct geological origins in the Athabasca River Basin (Clearwater and McMurray formations), comprising both weathered and freshly collected bitumen from a total of 4 different rivers. Our results demonstrate a measurable impact of sediment-embedded bitumen on C. riparius life history traits, namely on their growth and emergence patterns. Furthermore, we observed that bitumen samples from the Ells River (McMurray formation), which were freshly collected from exposed river bank soil deposits, exerted the strongest effects on most studied eco-physiological endpoints. Bitumen extracts from the Steepbank River and Athabasca River in the McMurray Formation and Steepbank River in the Clearwater Formation followed, underscoring the geographical variance in bitumen-induced toxicity. Exposure to elutriates, simulating "weathered" bitumen generally did not induce adverse effects in C. riparius life-cycle endpoints compared to elutriates prepared from freshly eroded bank soils. This emphasizes the importance of considering bitumen sources, their age, and the aquatic receiving environment when assessing potential adverse exposure effects. Our study shows that exposure to freshly eroded soils/sediments can potentially affect benthic invertebrates. More research is needed to understand how hydrological changes affect bitumen sediment exposure and the associated risks to aquatic biota.

Long-term effects of an early-life exposure of fathead minnows to sediments containing bitumen. Part II: Behaviour, reproduction, and gonad histopathology

The oil sands area of northern Alberta has river sediments that contain natural bitumen. Eggs and fish in these rivers may be exposed to bitumen-related chemicals early in life. This paper assesses a short embryo-larval fish exposure to oil sands sediment and follows the fish behaviour as they mature in clean water and examines their breeding success as adults (5 months afterwards). The three different oil sands river sediments tested were: a sediment collected outside of the bitumen deposit (tested at 3 g/L, Reference sediment from upstream Steepbank River site), and two sediments collected within the deposit (each tested at low (1 g/L) and high (3 g/L) concentrations). The sediments within the bitumen deposit were from the Ells and Steepbank (Stp) Rivers, and both contained significant total PAHs (>170 ng/g wet weight sediment) and alkylated PAHs (>4480 ng/g). Fish were exposed to these sediments for 21 days (as eggs and larval fish), and then transferred permanently to clean water to mature and breed. There was a significant decrease in the number of egg clutches produced by fish exposed early in life to Stp downstream high sediment (compared to Reference sediment). There was also a decrease in overall cumulative egg production, with fish from Stp downstream high sediment producing just over 1000 eggs in total while fish exposed to Ref sediment produced nearly 6900 eggs. The fish with reduced egg production were also less social than expected as they matured, and they had a lower % of early vitellogenic eggs in their ovaries. Overall, the exposure shows that a single, brief exposure during early life stages to natural bitumen can affect fish in adulthood. Naturally occurring bitumen-derived PAHs can reduce fish reproductive output by complex mechanisms, measurable as lower ovary maturity and changes in social behaviour.

A validated approach for analysis of heterocyclic aromatic compounds in sediment samples

The scientific literature is replete with analytical methods for the analysis of homocyclic aromatic compounds especially polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their alkylated analogs. However, there is a paucity of methods for the analysis of nitrogen-, sulfur- and oxygen-containing polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs). The lack of commercially available analytical standards, the presence of many structural derivatives and isomers and lack of certified reference materials all contribute to the inherent challenges in measuring these compounds. Gas chromatography coupled with a tandem mass spectrometer was used to develop two multiple reaction monitoring methods to detect and quantify fifty-three non-halogenated and halogenated hetero-polycyclic aromatic compounds (HPACs). Because of their greater polarity, strongly non-polar solvents typically employed to extract homocyclic PACs from sediment samples did not yield acceptable recoveries of our target analytes. By adding ethyl acetate to dichloromethane (50:50), recoveries of our target analytes using accelerated solvent extraction increased markedly. The performance characteristics of the validated method including accuracy [> than 67% for 46 (out of 53) analytes], inter- and intra-day precision [<30% for all analytes, (expressed as relative standard deviation)], limits of detection (0.1 to 2.3 ng/g) and quantitation (1.5 to 7.6 ng/g) imply that the method is fit for its intended purpose. A sediment sample from a known contaminated site in Canada was analyzed for both homo- and hetero-PACs. Measured concentrations of Σ27HPAC (7.3 μg/g, dry weight) were significantly smaller (p<0.05) than Σ16PAHs (80.9 μg/g, dry weight) and Σ30Alkylated-PAHs (14.2 μg/g, dry weight). These results suggest that the developed method is an effective and efficient approach for the targeted analysis of HPACs and their halogenated derivatives in sediment samples.

Fatty-acid based assessment of benthic food-web responses to multiple stressors in a large river system

Rivers are often exposed to multiple stressors, such as nutrients and contaminants, whose impacts on the river food webs may not be distinguished by sole assessment of biological community structures. We examined the benthic algal assemblages and the fatty acids (FA) of benthic macroinvertebrates in the lower Athabasca River in Canada, aiming to assess the changes in algal support and nutritional quality of the benthic food web in response to cumulative exposure to natural bitumen, municipal sewage discharge (hereafter, "sewage"), and oil sands mining ("mining"). Data show that the decline in water quality (increases in nutrient concentrations and total suspended solids) was associated with decreases in benthic diatom abundance, and was driven mainly by sewage-induced nutrient enrichment. Responses in nutritional quality of benthic macroinvertebrates, indicated by their polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) concentrations, were taxon- and stressor-specific. Nutritional quality of the larval dragonfly predator, Ophiogomphus, decreased nonlinearly with decreasing benthic diatom abundance and was lowest at the sewage-affected sites, although exposure to natural bitumen also resulted in reduced Ophiogomphus PUFA concentrations. In contrast, the PUFA concentrations of mayfly grazers/collector-gatherers were not affected by natural bitumen exposure, and were higher at the sewage and sewage+mining sites. The PUFA concentrations of the shredder Pteronarcys larvae did not change with cumulative exposure to the stressors. Sediment metal and polycyclic aromatic compound concentrations were not associated with the macroinvertebrate FA changes. Overall, we provide evidence that sewage induced reduction in trophic support by PUFA-rich diatoms, and was the predominant driver of the observed changes in FA composition and nutritional quality of the benthic macroinvertebrates. Fatty-acid metrics are useful to untangle effects of concurrent stressors, but the assessment outcomes depend on the functional feeding guilds used. A food-web perspective using multiple trophic levels and feeding guilds supports a more holistic assessment of the stressor impacts.

Ecotoxicological effects of fluvial eroded bitumen sediments from the Alberta oil sands to model aquatic species

To fully understand the ecological and cumulative effects of mining activities on the surrounding aquatic systems of the Canadian oil sands region, it is essential to understand the consequences of exposure to bitumen-containing soils/sediment from natural geomorphological processes. Both physical and chemical stress on aquatic biota can potentially result from exposure to natural bitumen, resulting from hillslope erosional processes and slumping of bankside soils into the rivers, affecting both riverbed habitat and water quality. The magnitude and duration of bitumen-containing soil's fluvial soils/erosional input into receiving watersheds depends on the interannual variability in the regional hydroclimatology and related seasonal and extreme flow events. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the potential ecotoxicological effects associated with erosional input of riverbank bitumen soils using controlled exposures. A series of integrated, laboratory-based ecotoxicological bioassays were conducted using organisms with different ecological and functional traits (Daphnia magna (Cladocera), Physa acuta (Gastropoda), and Aliivibrio fischeri (Bacteria)). All model organisms were exposed to elutriates produced from natural bitumen from four different regional rivers: fresh bitumen from shoreline outcrops at the Steepbank River upper and lower reaches (STB-CF and STB-MF, respectively) and the lower-Ells River (EL-MF) and aged, fluvially processed/weathered bitumen from the shoreline of the Athabasca River (ATB-MF). All tested organisms responded negatively to STB-MF and EL-MF elutriates. Low toxicity was also observed in the STB-CF and ATB-MF samples. These results follow the chemical analysis of the parental material and elutriates, where higher levels of metals, polycyclic aromatic compounds and naphthenic acids were detected in the EL-MF sample. In summary, this study shows that eroded and transported bitumen-containing soils and sediments could be a natural source of contaminant exposure to aquatic biota. This fluvial pathway should be considered when assessing background toxicity and the toxicological and ecological effects of oil sands mining activities.

Incorporating Industrial and Climatic Covariates into Analyses of Fish Health Indicators Measured in a Stream in Canada’s Oil Sands Region

Industrial and other human activities in Canada’s oil sands region (OSR) influence the environment. However, these impacts can be challenging to separate from natural stresses in flowing waters by comparing upstream reference sites to downstream exposure locations. For example, health indicators of lake chub (Couesius plumbeus) compared between locations in the Ells River (Upper and Lower) in 2013 to 2015 and 2018 demonstrated statistical differences. To further examine the potential sources of variation in fish, we also analyzed data at sites over time. When fish captured in 2018 were compared to pooled reference years (2013–2015), results indicated multiple differences in fish, but most of the differences disappeared when environmental covariates were included in the Elastic Net (EN) regularized regression models. However, when industrial covariates were included separately in the EN, the large differences in 2018 also disappeared, also suggesting the potential influence of these covariables on the health of fish. Further ENs incorporating both environmental and industrial covariates along with other variables which may describe industrial and natural influences, such as spring or summer precipitation and summer wind speeds and distance-based penalty factors, also support some of the suspected and potential mechanisms of impact. Further exploratory analyses simulating changes from zero and the mean (industrial) activity levels using the regression equations respectively suggest effects exceeding established critical effect sizes (CES) for fish measurements may already be present or effects may occur with small future changes in some industrial activities. Additional simulations also suggest that changing regional hydrological and thermal regimes in the future may also cause changes in fish measurements exceeding the CESs. The results of this study suggest the wide applicability of the approach for monitoring the health of fish in the OSR and beyond. The results also suggest follow-up work required to further evaluate the veracity of the suggested relationships identified in this analysis.

Improving monitoring of fish health in the oil sands region using regularization techniques and water quality variables

Trout-perch are sampled from the Athabasca River in Alberta, Canada, as a sentinel species for environmental health. The performance of trout-perch populations is known to be influenced by the quality of the water in which they reside. Using climate, environmental, and water quality variables measured in the Athabasca River near trout-perch sampling locations is found to improve model fitting and the predictability of models for the adjusted body weight, adjusted gonad weight, and adjusted liver weight of trout-perch. Given a large number of covariables, three variable selection techniques: stepwise regression, the lasso, and the elastic net (EN) are considered for selecting a subset of relevant variables. The models selected by the lasso and EN are found to outperform the models selected by stepwise regression in general, and little difference is observed between the models selected by the lasso and EN. Uranium, tungsten, tellurium, pH, molybdenum, and antimony are selected for at least one fish response.

A critical review of the ecological status of lakes and rivers from Canada's oil sands region

We synthesize the information available from the peer-reviewed literature on the ecological status of lakes and rivers in the oil sands region (OSR) of Canada. The majority of the research from the OSR has been performed in or near the minable region and examines the concentrations, flux, or enrichment of contaminants of concern (CoCs). Proximity to oil sands facilities and the beginning of commercial activities tend to be associated with greater estimates of CoCs across studies. Research suggests the higher measurements of CoCs are typically associated with wind-blown dust, but other sources also contribute. Exploratory analyses further suggest relationships with facility production and fuel use data. Exceedances of environmental quality guidelines for CoCs are also reported in lake sediments, but there are no indications of toxicity including those within the areas of the greatest atmospheric deposition. Instead, primary production has increased in most lakes over time. Spatial differences are observed in streams, but causal relationships with industrial activity are often confounded by substantial natural influences. Despite this, there may be signals associated with site preparation for new mines, potential persistent differences, and a potential effect of petroleum coke used as fuel on some indices of health in fish captured in the Steepbank River. There is also evidence of improvements in the ecological condition of some rivers. Despite the volume of material available, much of the work remains temporally, spatially, or technically isolated. Overcoming the isolation of studies would enhance the utility of information available for the region, but additional recommendations for improving monitoring can be made, such as a shift to site-specific analyses in streams and further use of industry-reported data. Integr Environ Assess Manag 2022;18:361-387. © 2021 The Authors. Identification of suspended particulate matters as the hotspot of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degradation-related bacteria and genes in the Pearl River Estuary using metagenomic approaches

Bacterial degradation is unequivocally considered as an important way for the cleanup of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) in the aquatic environment. However, the diversity and distribution of PAH-degrading bacterial communities and PAH degradation-related genes (PAHDGs) in ambient environment need to be investigated. In this study, bacteria in the water of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) were initially separated as the particle-attached bacteria (PAB) and free-living bacteria (FLB), and were further characterized using metagenomic approaches. Proteobacteria (80.1 %) was identified as the most abundant PAH-degrading phylum in the PRE water, followed by Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes. A substantial difference in the community structure was observed between PAH-degrading PAB and FLB. Both of PAH-degrading bacteria and PAHDGs were enriched on the suspended particulate matters (SPMs), with the range of enrichment factor (EF) from 7.84 × 10⁴ to 6.64 × 10⁶ (PAH-degrading bacteria) and from 1.14 × 10³ to 1.76 × 10⁵ (PAHDGs). The levels of PAH-degrading bacteria 16 S rRNA genes and PAHDGs on the SPMs were both significantly correlated with those in the aqueous phase (AP) in the PRE water (p < 0.05), indicating a dynamic distribution of PAH-degrading bacteria between these two phases. The total PAH concentrations on the SPMs of the PRE water were also significantly correlated with the total PAHDG levels in the PAB (p < 0.05). Our results suggested that the SPMs could be the important compartment for the elimination of PAHs from the aquatic environment.

Exploring the Influence of Industrial and Climatic Variables on Communities of Benthic Macroinvertebrates Collected in Streams and Lakes in Canada’s Oil Sands Region

Identifying and tracking the influence of industrial activities on streams and lakes is a priority for monitoring in Canada’s oil sands region (OSR). While differences in indicators are often found in waterbodies adjacent to mining facilities, the confounding influence of natural exposures to bitumen and other stressors can affect the identification of industrial effects. However, recent work suggests metrics of industrial activity at individual facilities, including production and fuel consumption, may be used in site-specific analyses to identify influence of the industry as a whole as well as individual operations. This study further examined the potential relationships between industrial and climatic variables on benthic communities from 13 streams and 4 lakes using publicly available data from the minable region and the Elastic Net (EN) variable selection technique. From the full set of possible industrial and climate variables, the EN commonly identified the negative influence of plant and fuel use of petroleum coke at the Suncor Basemine on benthic communities in streams and lakes. The fuel/plant use of petroleum coke at Suncor likely reflects the emission and regional deposition of delayed coke fly ash. Among the other industrial variables, crude bitumen production at Syncrude Mildred Lake and other facilities, steam injection rates, and petroleum coke stockpiling were also selected for some benthic invertebrate indices at some sites. Land disturbance metrics were also occasionally selected, but the analyses largely support the predominant influence of industrial facilities via (inferred) atmospheric pathways. While climate variables were also commonly selected by EN and follow-up work is needed, this study suggests that integrating industrial performance data into analyses of biota using a site-specific approach may have broad applicability in environmental monitoring in the OSR. More specifically, the approach used here may both resolve the long-standing challenge of natural confounding influences on monitoring the status of streams in the OSR and track the influence of industrial activities in biota below critical effect sizes.

Polycyclic aromatic compounds in the Canadian Environment: Aquatic and terrestrial environments

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) are ubiquitous across environmental media in Canada, including surface water, soil, sediment and snowpack. Information is presented according to pan-Canadian sources, and key geographical areas including the Great Lakes, the Alberta Oil Sands Region (AOSR) and the Canadian Arctic. Significant PAC releases result from exploitation of fossil fuels containing naturally-derived PACs, with anthropogenic sources related to production, upgrading and transport which also release alkylated PACs. Continued expansion of the oil and gas industry indicates contamination by PACs may increase. Monitoring networks should be expanded, and include petrogenic PACs in their analytical schema, particularly near fuel transportation routes. National-scale roll-ups of emission budgets may not expose important details for localized areas, and on local scales emissions can be substantial without significantly contributing to total Canadian emissions. Burning organic matter produces mainly parent or pyrogenic PACs, with forest fires and coal combustion to produce iron and steel being major sources of pyrogenic PACs in Canada. Another major source is the use of carbon electrodes at aluminum smelters in British Columbia and Quebec. Temporal trends in PAC levels across the Great Lakes basin have remained relatively consistent over the past four decades. Management actions to reduce PAC loadings have been countered by increased urbanization, vehicular emissions and areas of impervious surfaces. Major cities within the Great Lakes watershed act as diffuse sources of PACs, and result in coronas of contamination emanating from urban centres, highlighting the need for non-point source controls to reduce loadings.

New approaches to reduce sample processing times for the determination of polycyclic aromatic compounds in environmental samples

This study validates two approaches to streamlining the processing of sediment and biota for a suite of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) with a wide range of chemical properties, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and alkyl-PAHs (APAHs), and a new class of environmental contaminants, halogenated PAHs (HPAHs). One method is based on one-step in situ extraction/cleanup using accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) in which a mixture of copper, deactivated alumina and silica gel were added directly to the ASE cell along with sample; the second technique is based on dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE) using alumina/silica for cleanup of biota samples to augment conventional ASE extraction combined with gel permeation chromatography. Validation protocols were performed in accordance with the ISO/IEC 17025 guidelines, whereby method performance characteristics, i.e., accuracy, precision, linearity, limits of detection and ruggedness, were evaluated. Accuracies generally ranged from 70 to 120% for the in situ ASE method and 70-100% for the dSPE technique. Limits of detection/quantitation for the 45 target analytes for in situ ASE and dSPE methods were determined to be < 2.5/8 pg μL^-1, and < 20/60 pg μL^-1, respectively. Intra- and inter-day repeatability for both methods were < 25% except for 1 APAH which had an inter-day precision of 35% using the dSPE method. Neither method was affected by any of the purposeful changes attempted which implies that both methods are robust. Results of our validation studies showed excellent data quality for both methods in addition to achieving a reduction in sample processing times.

Potential Influence of Sewage Phosphorus and Wet and Dry Deposition Detected in Fish Collected in the Athabasca River North of Fort McMurray

The health of fish is a primary indicator of ecosystem response in the Oil Sands Region of northeastern Alberta. However, industrial activity is accompanied by other stressors, such as the discharge of sewage, municipal activity, forest fires, and natural weathering and erosion of bitumen. To combat the spatial confounding influences, we examined white sucker (Catostomus commersonii) captured in the Athabasca River at sites over time (2011–2019) and included covariates to account for the possible sources of influence. The analyses suggest spatially heterogeneous influences of natural factors on fish, such as discharge and air temperature, but also the influence of sewage phosphorus and precipitation. Among the stressors examined here, precipitation may be the most complex and may include a mixture of sources including inputs from tributaries, urban activity, industrial development, and forest fires. Although suggestive, the attribution of variance and detection of changes are affected by sample sizes in some years; these analyses may have missed effects or misspecified important relationships, especially in males. Despite these limitations, the analyses suggest potential differences may be associated with precipitation and highlight the need to integrate robust information on known and suspected stressors in future monitoring of aquatic ecosystems in the oil sands region and beyond.

A one-century sedimentary record of N- and S-polycyclic aromatic compounds in the Athabasca oil sands region in Canada

The atmospheric deposition of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) is considered a major pathway to isolated lakes and bogs in the Athabasca oil sands region (AOSR), Canada. However, the suite of PACs measured has been limited. We report the detailed depositional history of nitrogen and sulphur heterocyclic PACs using a ²¹⁰Pb dated sediment core (1914-2015) near major developments in the AOSR. We observed (1) an exponential growth in the deposition of heterocyclic PACs to recent times with an average doubling time of 12 years, (2) significant breakpoints in PAC fluxes in the mid to late 1980s, and (3) a synchronous increase of PACs with crude oil production (r² = 0.82, p = 0.001). NPACs were not detected prior to the 1960s in the sediment core studied, suggesting they may hold promise in serving as indicators for atmospheric PAC deposition of industrial origin. Furthermore, a change in heterocyclic PAC distribution profiles beginning in the 1970-1980s, after the onset of mining, resembling a petcoke signature, was also observed. Significant positive correlations (p < 0.05) were observed between heterocyclic PACs, and several metal(loid)s, including priority pollutant elements, chromium and beryllium, and rare earth elements, cerium, lanthanum and yttrium (r² > 0.75), suggesting the potential of a common source or similar transport and fate mechanisms. Significant negative or no correlations were observed between heterocyclic PACs and other metal(loid)s, including vanadium, total mercury and lead, possibly reflecting the impact of broader regulatory controls introduced in the mid-1970s on some metal(loids) but not on PACs, including the installation of electrostatic precipitators in major upgrader stacks.

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in the Canadian environment: A review of sampling techniques, strategies and instrumentation

A wide variety of sampling techniques and strategies are needed to analyze polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) and interpret their distributions in various environmental media (i.e., air, water, snow, soils, sediments, peat and biological material). In this review, we provide a summary of commonly employed sampling methods and strategies, as well as a discussion of routine and innovative approaches used to quantify and characterize PACs in frequently targeted environmental samples, with specific examples and applications in Canadian investigations. The pros and cons of different analytical techniques, including gas chromatography - flame ionization detection (GC-FID), GC low-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-LRMS), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet, fluorescence or MS detection, GC high-resolution MS (GC-HRMS) and compound-specific stable (δ¹³C, δ²H) and radiocarbon (Δ¹⁴C) isotope analysis are considered. Using as an example research carried out in Canada's Athabasca oil sands region (AOSR), where alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and sulfur-containing dibenzothiophenes are frequently targeted, the need to move beyond the standard list of sixteen EPA priority PAHs and for adoption of an AOSR bitumen PAC reference standard are highlighted.

Assessing the acute and chronic toxicity of exposure to naturally occurring oil sands deposits to aquatic organisms using Daphnia magna

In the Athabasca region, the oil sands are located at or near the surface making open-pit mining viable. In addition, the Athabasca River and its tributaries flow through these oil sands deposits, thereby receiving bitumen-associated contaminants through natural fluvial erosional and weathering processes. A key knowledge gap has been related to understanding both the magnitude and significance of the toxicological and ecological effects on aquatic organisms exposed to naturally occurring bitumen entering fluvial systems. Using the Daphnia magna model system, this study assessed the ecotoxicological effects of exposure to bitumen-elutriate treatments that simulated the early stages of fluvial/erosional exposure conditions. No significant among-site differences were observed in the survival of D. magna after 48 h exposure to elutriates produced from a 24 h extraction cycle, and chemical analysis indicated low concentration of a complex mixture of hydrocarbon and metal contaminants. In contrast, the same elutriates impaired reproduction and growth after a 21-day chronic exposure. F1 neonates from the chronic tests were tested for sensitivity to the reference substance potassium dichromate, revealing a decrease in their sensitivity. Inter-generational effects were also observed, with a significant decrease in subsequent neonate production, when daphnids were moved to a clean medium. Supplemental acute toxicity assays using 48 and 72 h bitumen extraction cycles progressively increased daphnid mortality after a 48-h exposure to the respective elutriates. This indicates that bitumen-associated contaminants are being liberated after initial input and fluvial washing (24 h), highlighting the need for future work to assess toxicity responses and associated elutriate water chemistry of a longer fluvial exposure time-series. This work contributes to our understanding of the possible effects of natural bitumen exposure on riverine aquatic ecosystems, providing new information to inform the delineation of baseline conditions to assess environmental change and the design of future regional effects-based monitoring programs.

Forest health effects due to atmospheric deposition: Findings from long-term forest health monitoring in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region

Oil sands developments release acidifying compounds (SO₂ and NO₂) with the potential for acidifying deposition and impacts to forest health. This article integrates the findings presented in the Oil Sands Forest Health Special Issue, which reports on the results of 20 years of forest health monitoring, and addresses the key questions asked by WBEA's Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) Program: 1) is there evidence of deposition affecting the environment?, 2) have there been changes in deposition or effects over time?, 3) do acid deposition levels require management intervention?, 4) what are major sources of deposited substances? and 5) how can the program be improved? Deposition of sulphur, nitrogen, base cations (BC), polycyclic aromatic compounds and trace elements decline exponentially with distance from sources. There is little evidence for acidification effects on forest soils or on understory plant communities or tree growth, but there is evidence of nitrogen accumulation in jack pine needles and fertilization effects on understory plant communities. Sulphur, BC and trace metal concentrations in lichens increased between 2008 and 2014. Source apportionment studies suggest fugitive dust in proximity to mining is a primary source of BC, trace element and organic compound deposition, and BC deposition may be neutralizing acidifying deposition. Sulphur accumulation in soils and nitrogen effects on vegetation may indicate early stages of acidification. Deposition estimates for sites close to emissions sources exceed proposed regulatory trigger levels, suggesting a detailed assessment of acidification risk close to the emission sources is warranted. However, there is no evidence of widespread acidification as suggested by recent modeling studies, likely due to high BC deposition. FHM Program evolution should include continued integration with modeling approaches, ongoing collection and assessment of monitoring data and testing for change over time, and addition of monitoring sites to fill gaps in regional coverage.

Tracking functional bacterial biomarkers in response to a gradient of contaminant exposure within a river continuum

Within all aquatic environments, aside from the physical dispersal of dissolved and/or particulate phase contaminants, alteration from both biological and chemical processes are shown to change the chemistry of the parent compounds. Often these alterations can lead to secondary influences because of cooperative microbial processes (i.e. coupled respiratory pathways and/or energy and biodegradation cycles), complicating our understanding of the biological impact that these mobile compounds impose on ecosystem health. The McMurray Formation (MF) (the formation constituting the minable bituminous oil sands) is a natural, ongoing source of hydrocarbon-bound sediments to river ecosystems in the region (via terrestrial and aquatic erosion), providing a natural "mesocosm" to track and characterize the effects of these compounds on regional aquatic primary productivity. Here we characterize the natural, in-situ microbial response to increasing hydrocarbon exposure along a river continuum in the downstream direction. Using the Steepbank River (STB), suspended and bed sediment samples were collected at 3 sites from upstream to downstream, as the water flows into and through the MF. Samples were then analyzed for the active, in-situ gene expression of the microbial communities. Results from both suspended and bed sediments show clear and significant shifts in the microbial metabolic processes within each respective compartment, in response to the elevated polycyclic aromatic compound (PAC) concentrations. Specific genes likely responsible for hydrocarbon breakdown (Alkane Monooxygenase, Benzoyl-CoA Reductase etc.) experience elevated expression levels, while certain energy metabolism genes (nitrogen, sulfur, methane) reveal fundamental shifts in their pathway specificity, indicating an adaptation response in their basic energy metabolism. Expression from suspended sediments reveal subtle yet delayed metabolic response further downstream compared to bed sediments, indicative of the erosion and transport dynamics within a lotic system. These results provide insight into the use of novel clusters of gene biomarkers to track the active, in-situ microbial response of both emerging and legacy contaminants. Such information will be important in determining the best management strategies for the monitoring and assessment of aquatic health in both natural and contaminated ecosystems.

Forage fish and polycyclic aromatic compounds in the Fort McMurray oil sands area: Body burden comparisons with environmental distributions and consumption guidelines

The Fort McMurray region in northeastern Alberta (Canada) is rich in natural sources of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) from exposed bitumen beds; anthropogenic sources are being released with increased oil sands industry expansion. Here we report on investigations of PACs (47 compounds) in three species of forage fish collected during the 2012-2013 Joint Oil Sands Monitoring Program (JOSMP) fish health investigations and compare results with PAC data for sediment and water collected under JOSMP and earlier programs. PAC concentrations in sediments varied three orders in magnitude and were highest at downstream tributary mouths, which flowed through the exposed McMurray Formation, and along reaches of the Athabasca River where the formation was exposed. PAC concentrations in water were less variable but with higher concentrations near exposed bitumen beds. Forage fish exhibited the weakest spatial gradients in ΣPACs concentration, which averaged 102 ± 32 ng/g in trout-perch from the Athabasca River, 125 ± 22 ng/g in lake chub from the Ells River, and 278 ± 267 ng/g in slimy sculpin from the Steepbank, Firebag, and Dunkirk Rivers. Low-molecular weight compounds, particularly naphthalenes and fluorenes, dominated fish PACs. Phenanthrenes occurred in greater percent composition in fish caught in areas where PAC concentrations in sediments were higher due to the proximity of bitumen sources than in other areas. Dibenzothiophene, a major component of bitumen PAC, was a minor component of fish ΣPACs. Forage fish PAC concentrations were below fish consumption guidelines established by the European Commission (2011) and for the reopening of the commercial fisheries closed by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. PAC concentrations in forage fish were similar to concentrations observed in many other studies (fish market surveys, estuaries, and marine waters) and lower than in fish sampled from highly impacted areas (near refineries, harbors, and other industrialized areas).

The Alberta oil sands eroded bitumen/sediment transitional journey: Influence on sediment transport dynamics, PAH signatures and toxicological effect

This paper investigated the sediment/contaminant continuum of bitumen containing sediment, from eroded exposed natural bitumen outcrops to river depositional zone, in order to improve our understanding of the transitional sediment, chemistry and toxicological influence on aquatic health. To achieve this aim, we linked a rainfall simulator with an annular flume to allow for connectivity between terrestrial erosion to stream flow. Bulk sediments were collected from the minable McMurray Formation (MF) on the Ells (EL) and Steepbank (STB) Rivers and from the Clearwater Formation (CF) on the STB. All plots generated similar washoff rates (~25 L hr^-1) and fine eroded sediment (d₅₀ = 5 μm) regardless of strata. The CF generated the highest total eroded sediment (TES) followed by EL-MF and STB-MF. The STB-MF generated up to three orders of magnitude lower TES than the STB-CF. The EL generated the highest PAH concentrations, however, when normalizing by TES mass delivered to the flume, STB-MF PAH was one to two orders of magnitude higher per unit mass than EL-MF. The TES concentrations were inversely proportional to the degree of bitumen within the sediment (STB-MF > EL-MF > STB-CF). Once the TES was suspended in the flume, there was a change in the dominant PAH for most classes [e.g., Dibenzothiophenes C4 (parent material) to a C3 (TES)]. Further, no flocculation and the buoyant properties of the TES suggested that the sediment and associated PAHs may travel long distances. The EL-MF proved to be the most toxic to fathead minnow embryo survival due principally to the high PAH concentrations and sediment loads. The CF exhibited no toxicological effect. This work has shown the importance of assessing sediment/contaminant characteristics over the continuum (terrestrial erosion/washoff to river deposition) in order to support basin wide management strategies for the protection of aquatic health.

Advances in science and applications of air pollution monitoring: A case study on oil sands monitoring targeting ecosystem protection

The potential environmental impact of air pollutants emitted from the oil sands industry in Alberta, Canada, has received considerable attention. The mining and processing of bitumen to produce synthetic crude oil, and the waste products associated with this activity, lead to significant emissions of gaseous and particle air pollutants. Deposition of pollutants occurs locally (i.e., near the sources) and also potentially at distances downwind, depending upon each pollutant's chemical and physical properties and meteorological conditions. The Joint Oil Sands Monitoring Program (JOSM) was initiated in 2012 by the Government of Canada and the Province of Alberta to enhance or improve monitoring of pollutants and their potential impacts. In support of JOSM, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) undertook a significant research effort via three components: the Air, Water, and Wildlife components, which were implemented to better estimate baseline conditions related to levels of pollutants in the air and water, amounts of deposition, and exposures experienced by the biota. The criteria air contaminants (e.g., nitrogen oxides [NO_x], sulfur dioxide [SO₂], volatile organic compounds [VOCs], particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm [PM_2.5]) and their secondary atmospheric products were of interest, as well as toxic compounds, particularly polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), trace metals, and mercury (Hg). This critical review discusses the challenges of assessing ecosystem impacts and summarizes the major results of these efforts through approximately 2018. Focus is on the emissions to the air and the findings from the Air Component of the ECCC research and linkages to observations of contaminant levels in the surface waters in the region, in aquatic species, as well as in terrestrial and avian species. The existing evidence of impact on these species is briefly discussed, as is the potential for some of them to serve as sentinel species for the ongoing monitoring needed to better understand potential effects, their potential causes, and to detect future changes. Quantification of the atmospheric emissions of multiple pollutants needs to be improved, as does an understanding of the processes influencing fugitive emissions and local and regional deposition patterns. The influence of multiple stressors on biota exposure and response, from natural bitumen and forest fires to climate change, complicates the current ability to attribute effects to air emissions from the industry. However, there is growing evidence of the impact of current levels of PACs on some species, pointing to the need to improve the ability to predict PAC exposures and the key emission source involved. Although this critical review attempts to integrate some of the findings across the components, in terms of ECCC activities, increased coordination or integration of air, water, and wildlife research would enhance deeper scientific understanding. Improved understanding is needed in order to guide the development of long-term monitoring strategies that could most efficiently inform a future adaptive management approach to oil sands environmental monitoring and prevention of impacts. Implications: Quantification of atmospheric emissions for multiple pollutants needs to be improved, and reporting mechanisms and standards could be adapted to facilitate such improvements, including periodic validation, particularly where uncertainties are the largest. Understanding of baseline conditions in the air, water and biota has improved significantly; ongoing enhanced monitoring, building on this progress, will help improve ecosystem protection measures in the oil sands region. Sentinel species have been identified that could be used to identify and characterize potential impacts of wildlife exposure, both locally and regionally. Polycyclic aromatic compounds are identified as having an impact on aquatic and terrestrial wildlife at current concentration levels although the significance of these impacts and attribution to emissions from oil sands development requires further assessment. Given the improvement in high resolution air quality prediction models, these should be a valuable tool to future environmental assessments and cumulative environment impact assessments.

Source apportionment of ambient fine and coarse particulate matter polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at the Bertha Ganter-Fort McKay community site in the Oil Sands Region of Alberta, Canada

A comprehensive filter-based particulate matter polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) source apportionment study was conducted at the Wood Buffalo Environmental Association Bertha Ganter-Fort McKay (BGFM) community monitoring station from 2014 to 2015 to quantify ambient concentrations and identify major sources. The BGFM station is located in close proximity to several surface oil sands production facilities and was previously found to be impacted by their air emissions. 24-hour integrated PM_2.5 and PM_10-2.5 samples were collected on a 1-in-3-day schedule yielding 108 complete organic/inorganic filter sets for source apportionment modeling. During the study period PM_2.5 averaged 8.6 ± 11.8 μg m^-3 (mean ± standard deviation), and PM_10-2.5 averaged 8.5 ± 9.5 μg m^-3. Wind regression analysis indicated that the oil sands production facilities were significant sources of PM_2.5 mass and black carbon (BC), and that wildland fires were a significant source of the highest PM_2.5 (>10 μg m^-3) and BC events. A six-factor positive matrix factorization (PMF) model solution explained 95% of the measured PM_2.5 and 78% of the measured ΣPAH. Five sources significantly contributed to PM_2.5 including: Biomass Combustion (3.57 μg m^-3; 40%); Fugitive Dust (1.86 μg m^-3; 28%); Upgrader Stack Emissions (1.44 μg m^-3; 21%); Petrogenic PAH (1.20 μg m^-3; 18%); and Transported Aerosol (0.43 μg m^-3 and 6%). However, the analysis indicated that only the pyrogenic PAH source factor significantly contributed (78%) to the measured ΣPAH. A five-factor PMF model dominated by fugitive dust sources explained 98% of PM_10-2.5 mass and 86% of the ΣPAH. The predominant sources of PM_10-2.5 mass were (i) Haul Road Dust (4.82 μg m^-3; 53%), (ii) Mixed Fugitive Dust (2.89 μg m^-3; 32%), (iii) Fugitive Oil Sand (0.88 μg m^-3; 10%), Mobile Sources (0.23 μg m^-3; 2%), and Organic Aerosol (0.06 μg m^-3; 1%). Only the Organic Aerosol source significantly contributed (86%) to the measured ΣPAH.
