Multiple approaches to assess human health risks from carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic metals via consumption of five fish species from a large reservoir in Turkey

Hg, Cd, and Pb in fish of the Moulouya River, Morocco, and human health risk

Concentrations of toxic metals (Hg, Pb, and Cd) were determined in the muscles of Lepomis macrochirus, Barbus callensis, and Barbus nasus caught from the Moulouya River of Morocco by graphite furnace (for Pb and Cd) and cold vapour (for Hg) atomic absorption spectrometry, after acid digestion. Although the concentration of metals in some species was relatively high, no health risk has been identified in comparison to the maximum limits as set by the European Commission. The order of increasing concentrations was Cd < Hg < Pb. Calculated Target Hazard Quotients and Hazard Indices were below 1, indicating that the intake of metals via consumption of the muscles of both fish species does not represent a hazard to human health.

Risk assessment of As, Cd, Cr, and Pb via the consumption of seafood in Haikou

In order to mitigate the risk of excessive heavy metal intake, a study was conducted to assess the levels of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) contamination in 23 edible seafood species obtained from markets in Haikou. The findings were analyzed to evaluate the potential health hazards posed to the local population through consumption. The metals were detected via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for quantification. The non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks in humans were assessed via target hazard quotient (THQ), combined target hazard quotient (CTHQ), and target cancer risk (TR). The results indicated that the rank order based on the median metal concentration was As > Cd > Cr > Pb. THQ and CTHQ showed that nine seafood species posed a non-carcinogenic risk regarding from As and Cd consumption separately, or the four targeted metals ingestion together. TR assessment indicated that the InAs in all the species presented a carcinogenic risk to coastal residents. The Cd content in bivalves, algae, and several crustacean (Mantis Shrimp, Orchid Crab, Red spot Swimming Crab) and fish species (Japanese Scad, Pacific Saury), and Cr levels in most bivalve species (Razor Clams, White Clams, Fan Shells, Oysters, Blood Clams) presented a carcinogenic risk. The As, Cd, Pb, and Cr levels of seafood in Haikou were assessed species presented a potential health risk. Necessitating stricter risk should be management and detection capability and monitoring will be improved.

Characteristics and correlation analysis of heavy metal distribution in China's freshwater aquaculture pond sediments

The concentration of heavy metals (HMs) in aquaculture pond sediments significantly affects aquatic food safety and environmental quality. The contamination characteristics, drivers and potential sources of HMs in typical bulk freshwater aquaculture pond sediments in major provinces of China were systematically investigated using a variety of methods and models. Specifically, 130 surface sediment samples were collected from the study area, and the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and potential ecological risk index (RI) were used to jointly evaluate the characteristics of the HMs. Spearman's correlation and redundancy analysis revealed the main drivers of the HMs. Additionally, the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model and absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model were used to identify the sources of HMs. The results revealed that the pond sediments were safe for fish culture in most of the study areas. Aquafeed protein content is an important driver of HM concentrations in sediments. The total organic carbon (TOC) content, percentage of clay particles, and pH of the aquaculture pond sediments determined the sediment HMs enrichment abilities as 13.6 %, 52 %, and 9.8 %, respectively. Cd, a significantly enriched pollutant, posed a greater ecological risk than the other five HMs (Cr, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb). Three sources of HMs were identified, including agricultural activity (e.g., aquafeeds, pesticides, and fertilizers), industrial production, and natural sources, with contributions of 44.29 %, 36.66 %, and 19.05 %, respectively. This study provides a scientific basis for minimizing the input and accumulation of HMs in freshwater aquaculture pond sediments, and this can provide insights into the prevention and control of the ecological risks posed by HMs.

The detrimental effects of heavy metals on tributaries exert pressure on water quality, Crossocheilus aplocheilus, and the well-being of human health

The escalating presence of heavy metals (HMs) in the Panjkora River water and their impact on fish pose a significant challenge to both the ecological community and human health. Consequently, a study was conducted with the primary aim of elucidating their influence on human health-related issues. To address this, the concentrations of heavy metals, including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn), in both water and the fish species Crossocheilus diplocheilus were investigated across various locations within the study area. The quantification of HMs concentration was carried out utilizing an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The highest concentration in water was found as 0.060 mg/L for Pb and lowest for Fe, whereas the highest concentration in fish was 2.028 mg/kg for Pb and lowest for As. Human health risk associated with fish eating was evaluated by using health risk indices (HRI) for non-carcinogenic health risks and targeted cancer risk (TR) for carcinogenic health risks. The values of the health risk index (HRI) were found greater than 1 except Fe (0.0792), Zn (0.782), and Mn (0.541). The highest mean HRI > 1 was recorded for As (62.99), Cd (26.85), and Pb (10.56). This implies that fish consumption from river Panjkora is not safe up to some extent. Similarly, the TR value for As, Cd, and Pb was found 2.8 [Formula: see text], 1.6 [Formula: see text], 2.8 ×[Formula: see text] which showed cancer risk. There is a detected risk to human health associated with the consumption of fish from the Panjkora River. The government must implement adaptive measures to address this significant issue of water pollution in the study area. Additionally, there is a need for further extensive and prolonged research studies in this context.

Health risk assessment of heavy metals in wild fish and seasonal variation and source identification of heavy metals in sediments: a case study of typical urban river in Xi'an, China

In order to determine the status of heavy metal pollution in river sediments and wild fish in Xi'an, concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb) were collected and analyzed in sediments and wild fish during dry season (October-November 2020) and wet season (June-July 2021). This study aimed to investigate the spatial and temporal variations of heavy metals in urban rivers of Xi'an, China. Their distribution characteristics and sources as well their pollution levels and health risks were assessed. The findings revealed that influenced by human activities, the heavy metal content in sediments (mg·kg-1 dry weight) in wet season was ranked as follows: Cr (73.09) > Zn (63.73) > Pb (40.31) > Ni (31.52) > Cu (24.86) > As (6.83); in the dry season: Zn (94.07) > Cr (69.59) > Cu (34.24) > Ni (33.60) > Pb (32.87) > As (7.60). Moreover, 32 fish samples from six species indicated an average metal content trend (mg·kg-1 wet weight) of Zn (8.70) > Cr (0.57) > Pb (0.28) > Ni (0.27) > Cu (0.24) > As (0.05). The potential ecological risk indices for sediment heavy metal concentrations in both seasons were well below the thresholds, which indicates that the aquatic environment is in safe level. The analysis of the potential ecological risk of sediment heavy metal concentrations indicates that the aquatic environment is safe for the time being. Based on the estimated daily intake (EDI), target risk quotient (THQ), total target risk quotient (TTHQ), cancer risk (CR), total cancer risk (TCR), and the permissible safety limits set by the agencies, the consumption of the fish examined is safe for human health. However, the presence of Cr and As in wild fish should still be a concern for human health, especially for children. The cumulative effect of heavy metals and the bioconcentration factor (BCF) suggest that sediment and heavy metals in fish are closely related, with higher concentrations in fish living in the bottom layer of the water column than in other water layers, and increasing with increasing predator levels. Correlation analysis and PMF modeling identified and determined four comparable categories of potential sources, namely, (1) atmospheric deposition and traffic sources, (2) agricultural sources, (3) industrial sources, and (4) natural sources.

Heavy metals in five commonly consumed fish species from River Swat, Pakistan, and their implications for human health using multiple risk assessment approaches

This study analyzed the levels of heavy metals bioaccumulation in commonly consumed riverine fish species, including G. cavia, T. macrolepis, G. gotyla, S. plagiostomus, and M. armatus from River Swat in Pakistan, and quantify their potential risk to children and adults in general and fisherfolk communities using multiple pollution and risk assessment approaches. The highest metal detected by inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was Zn, which ranged from 49.61 to 116.83 mg/kg, followed by Fe (19.25-101.33 mg/kg) > Mn (5.25-40.35 mg/kg) > Cr (3.05-14.59 mg/kg) > Ni (4.26-11.80 mg/kg) > Al (1.59-12.25 mg/kg) > Cu (1.24-8.59 mg/kg) > Pb (0.29-1.95 mg/kg) > Co (0.08-0.46 mg/kg) > Cd (0.01-0.29 mg/kg), demonstrating consistent fluctuation with the safe recommendations of global regulatory bodies. The average bioaccumulation factor (BAF) values in the examined fish species were high (BAF > 5000) for Pb, Zn, Mn, Cu, Cr, Ni, and Cd, bioaccumulate (1000 > BAF < 5000) for Co, and probable accumulative (BAF <1000) for Fe, and Al, while the overall ∑heavy metals pollution index (MPI) values were greater than one (MPI > 1) indicating sever heavy metals toxicity in G. cavia, followed by S. plagiostomus, M. armatus, G. gotyla, and T. macrolepis. The multivariate Pearson's correlation analysis identified the correlation coefficients between heavy metal pairs (NiCr, CuCr, PbCr, AlCo, CuNi, and PbNi), the hierarchical cluster analysis (CA) determined the origin by categorizing heavy metal accumulation into Cluster-A, Cluster-B, and Cluster-C, and the principal component analysis (PCA) discerned nearby weathering, mining, industrial, municipal, and agricultural activities as the potential sources of heavy metals bioaccumulation in riverine fish. As per human risk perspective, S.plagiostomus contributed significantly to the estimated daily intake (EDI) of heavy metals, followed by G.cavia > M.armatus > G.gotyla > T.macrolepis in dependent children and adults of the fisherfolk followed by the general population. The non-carcinogenic target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) values for heavy metal intake through fish exposure were < 1, while the carcinogenic risk (CR) for individual metal intake and the total carcinogenic risk (TCR) for cumulative Cr, Cd, and Pb intake were within the risk threshold of 10-6-10-4, suggesting an acceptable to high non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk for both children and adults in the fisherfolk, followed by the general population.

Does eating fish cause cancer? A case study metal(loid)s accumulation in mackerel and sardine tissues from İskenderun Bay, Türkiye

Due to the increasing harmful effects of metal(loid)s over time, it has become important in environmental studies carried out to increase environmental awareness. It is important to investigate the cumulative presence of metal(loid)s in nature, their interactions with each other and risks posed by fish consumption for human health. Total concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were determined in muscle and gill tissues of horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus). Metal analyses were carried out using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectroscopic (ICP-MS) methods. In both tissues, Fe and Zn concentrations were the highest and Cd, Cu and Pb concentrations were the lowest. The target hazard coefficient, estimated daily intake, target cancer risk, total target hazard coefficient, and hazard indices were calculated to assess the risks to an individual's health from consuming fish. Hazard index and total target hazard coefficient values calculated for each fish exceeded 1 but were very close to 1. Target cancer risk values of As and Ni were found to be 10-6 and 10-4 for Pb. These limit values indicate the need for regular monitoring of the region. In addition, the interactions between the metal(loid)s accumulated in the tissues were analyzed and a high correlation was found between As-Ni, which poses a risk to public health.

Arsenic speciation in freshwater fish: challenges and research needs

Food and water are the main sources of human exposure to arsenic. It is important to determine arsenic species in food because the toxicities of arsenic vary greatly with its chemical speciation. Extensive research has focused on high concentrations of arsenic species in marine organisms. The concentrations of arsenic species in freshwater fish are much lower, and their determination presents analytical challenges. In this review, we summarize the current state of knowledge on arsenic speciation in freshwater fish and discuss challenges and research needs. Fish samples are typically homogenized, and arsenic species are extracted using water/methanol with the assistance of sonication and enzyme treatment. Arsenic species in the extracts are commonly separated using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and detected using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). Electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry, used in combination with HPLC and ICPMS, provides complementary information for the identification and characterization of arsenic species. The methods and perspectives discussed in this review, covering sample preparation, chromatography separation, and mass spectrometry detection, are directed to arsenic speciation in freshwater fish and applicable to studies of other food items. Despite progress made in arsenic speciation analysis, a large fraction of the total arsenic in freshwater fish remains unidentified. It is challenging to identify and quantify arsenic species present in complex sample matrices at very low concentrations. Further research is needed to improve the extraction efficiency, chromatographic resolution, detection sensitivity, and characterization capability.

Potential Toxic elements in shellfish from three rivers in Niger Delta, Nigeria: bioaccumulation, dietary intake, and human health risk assessment

Human health risks associated with the consumption of three shellfish (Penaeus monodon, Crassostrea rhizophorae, and Tympanostomus fuscatus) harvested from the Buguma, Krakrama, and Bonny Rivers in the Niger Delta region were evaluated in this study. The bioaccumulation of potential toxic elements (PTEs) [Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), Lead (Pb), and Nickel (Ni)] was analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). The pollution index (PPI), estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), total hazard index (HI), target cancer risk (CR), and total cancer risk (TCR) were evaluated for potential human health risks. The bioaccumulation levels of PTEs in shellfish samples followed the order: Ni > Cr > Pb > Cd > As and were above standard recommended limits except for inorganic As levels observed in T. fuscatus and P. monodon samples from Krakrama and Bonny and C. rhizophorae from Bonny river. The EDI values for iAs, Cr, and Ni were lower than the tolerable daily intake (TDI), however, the EDI of Cd for children in P. monodon (4.6E-03 mg kg-1day-1), T. fuscatus (1.7E-03 mg kg-1day-1) and C. rhizophorae (1.4E-03 mg kg-1day-1) from Buguma were higher than the TDI value (8.00E-04 mg kg-1day-1). The HI values were above 1. The total cancer risk (TCR) values of all analyzed PTEs for all the shellfish species from the rivers for children and adults ranged from 8.69E-04 to 2.47E-03 and 1.86E-03 to 5.30E-03 respectively and these were higher than the priority risk level (1E-04), hence, the need to monitor shellfish consumption in the study area.

A holistic approach to the assessment of heavy metal levels and associated risks in the coastal sediment of Giresun, southeast Black Sea

A seasonal study was conducted to assess the levels, sources, and potential ecological risks of heavy metals (HM) in coastal sediments along the Giresun Coast, located on the southeast coast of the Black Sea. The mean concentrations of HMs as mg/kg were ranked as Fe (27646.37) > Al (27348.55) > Mn (571.87) > Zn (94.16) > Cr (60.64) > Cu (45.66) > Pb (41.37) > Ni (27.29) > Co (14.47) > As (7.36) > Cd (0.20), respectively. At all stations through the year, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni were in "the minimum enrichment" class as evaluated by the enrichment factor (EF). As assessed by the contamination factor (CF), all HM levels except Pb, Fe and Cu were "low" or "moderately polluted" at all stations and seasons. With the exception of Cd levels, all HMs in all seasons and stations pointed out "low ecological risk" according to the ecological risk index (E_rⁱ). According to the sediment quality guidelines, Ni, Cu and Pb were observed to pose a high ecological risk to habitat. The combined risk assessment indices pointed out low to moderate ecological risk. The study concluded that the region is subject to minimum anthropogenic disturbances in the aquatic environment.

Trace elements in Foodstuffs from the Mediterranean Basin-Occurrence, Risk Assessment, Regulations, and Prevention strategies: A review

Trace elements (TEs) are chemical compounds that naturally occur in the earth's crust and in living organisms at low concentrations. Anthropogenic activities can significantly increase the level of TEs in the environment and finally enter the food chain. Toxic TEs like cadmium, lead, arsenic, and mercury have no positive role in a biological system and can cause harmful effects on human health. Ingestion of contaminated food is a typical route of TEs intake by humans. Recent data about the occurrence of TEs in food available in the Mediterranean countries are considered in this review. Analytical methods are also discussed. Furthermore, a discussion of existing international agency regulations will be given. The risk associated with the dietary intake of TEs was estimated by considering consumer exposure and threshold values such as Benchmark dose lower confidence limit and provisional tolerable weekly intake established by the European Food Safety Authority and the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives, respectively. Finally, several remediation approaches to minimize TE contamination in foodstuffs were discussed including chemical, biological, biotechnological, and nanotechnological methods. The results of this study proved the occurrence of TEs contamination at high levels in vegetables and fish from some Mediterranean countries. Lead and cadmium are more abundant in foodstuffs than other toxic trace elements. Geographical variations in TE contamination of food crops clearly appear, with a greater risk in developing countries. There is still a need for the regular monitoring of these toxic element levels in food items to ensure consumer protection.

Comparative assessment of human health risk associated with heavy metals bioaccumulation in fish species (Barbus grypus and Tenualosa ilisha) from the Karoon River, Iran: Elucidating the role of habitat and feeding habits

Concentrations of Cd, Ni, and Pb were measured in the liver and muscle tissues of benthic omnivorous (Barbus grypus) and pelagic herbivorous (Tenualosa ilisha) fish collected from two sampling sites along the Karoon River, Khuzestan Province, southwest of Iran. Potential human health risks were evaluated by measuring the estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI), and target cancer risk (TR). The results highlight the important role of habitat and feeding habits in the uptake of HMs by the two species. The EDI for all HMs exceeded the oral reference doses (RfDo) provided by the USEPA, indicating the two fish species are not entirely safe for human consumption. The THQ values were within the permissible limit (< 1), while HI values (> 1) showed there was non-carcinogenic risk for consumers. The TR values for Pb were within the acceptable range (1.00E-06-1.00E-04) for both species.

Concentrations of trace metals in Siganus javus captured in Negombo estuary, Sri Lanka: Human health risk assessment through dietary exposure

Concentrations of aluminium, cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel and zinc in muscle and liver of a marine fish in Indo-Pacific region, Siganus javus captured in Negombo estuary were evaluated and potential human health risks associated with dietary exposure were assessed. Of the six metals analyzed, zinc was the most abundant metal in both tissues. No significant differences were found between muscle and liver with respect to cadmium and lead concentrations whereas concentrations of other metals were higher in liver compared to muscle. In human health perspective, estimated target hazard quotients for cadmium and lead were greater than the threshold of one indicating potential non-cancer health risks to heavy consumers. Estimated excess cancer risk of cadmium indicate carcinogenic health risks associated with their consumption even at moderate meal frequencies. The results revealed that consumption of S. javus from the estuary needs to be limited concerning non-cancer and cancer risks to human health.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) Contamination in Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus Lacépède, 1803 from Lake Togo-Lagoon of Aného, Togo: Possible Human Health Risk Suitable to Their Consumption

The Lake Togo-Lagoon of Aného is located in the coastal zone where phosphorite mining is carried out. This mining discharges all kinds of waste such as fuel oil into the surrounding environment without prior treatment. Moreover, the hydrosystem receives runoff and river inputs after having crossed and leached from mining and urban soils. This study aims to determine the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contamination in commercially consumed fish species (Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) from that hydrosystem and the associated health risks for consumers. For that, fish sample collection was performed during the dry season. Afterwards, their muscles, gills, and livers were cut and 12 PAHs were analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer (GC-MS). The total PAHs (tPAHs) concentrations in fish tissues ranged from 5.24 to 48.40 µg/kg with average concentration of 14.51 ± 8.95 µg/kg in muscles, from 5.90 to 28.20 µg/kg averaging 14.90 ± 5.19 µg/kg in gills, and from 43.20 to 149.00 µg/kg with an average of 80.74 ± 27.08 µg/kg in livers. The average concentrations of low molecular weight PAHs (LMW PAHs) were 10.82 ± 9.61 µg/kg in muscles, 8.25 ± 5.43 µg/kg in gills, and 47.97 ± 22.56 µg/kg in livers whereas those of high molecular weight of PAHs (HMW PAHs) were 4.10 ± 2.14 µg/kg in muscles, 7.98 ± 3.96 µg/kg in gills, and 32.77 ± 8.66 µg/kg in livers. An overall trend of decreasing concentrations with increasing fish size classes was observed for some PAHs (Naphtalene, Pyrene in muscles, for Pyrene, Benzo(a)Anthracene, Chrysene in gills and for Naphtalene, Phenanthrene in livers). The PAHs in these fish might have pyrogenic and petrogenic sources, with the dominance of pyrogenic, and all of the total hazard quotients (THQ) are less than 1. This situation must not be neglected for better planning sustainable management of the target ecosystem.

A combined survey and exposure study reveals the distribution characteristic of chromium in fish head

In this study, the content of chromium (Cr) in three main edible tissues (dorsal muscle, ventral muscle, and head) of 14 different fish species was determined. As expected, Cr level in fish head is generally higher than that in fish muscle. To elucidate the deposition of Cr in the fish head, bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) was chosen as the model fish and a 14-day-exposure experiment of 1 mg/L Cr was subsequently conducted. The fish head was divided into 7 parts, and the results showed that, in different parts of the head, Cr was significantly accumulated in the brain, the muscle after gills, and the muscle of others, and the bone after the fish was exposed to 1-mg/L Cr for 14 days. Additionally, the health risk assessment showed that there was no potential non-carcinogenic risk of consuming the dorsal muscle, the ventral muscle, and the head of the 14 fish species to children, teenagers, and adults as the THQ values were less than 1. However, there was potential carcinogenic risk of consuming the fish head for adults in the 14 fish species. It is worth noting that, in the exposure experiment, the consuming of the lips and the bone of fish head also posed potential carcinogenic risk to adults while there was no potential risk of consuming the total fish head. Overall, compared to the fish muscle, the fish head usually had a high accumulation of Cr, and the Cr was mainly deposited in the position of the bone, which may pose potential carcinogenic risk to adults. Thus, the potential health risk of consuming the fish head is mainly associated with the content of the bone in the head, and, in the health risk assessment, the influence of the bone in the head should be considered, which may overstate the risks as fish head bone is usually not to be eaten.

Heavy metals in Chinese freshwater fish: Levels, regional distribution, sources and health risk assessment

China is a major producer and consumer of freshwater fish, which can provide nutrients to the human body but is also of great concern because of the bioaccumulation and amplification of heavy metals that are directly related to human health. In this paper, we reviewed the accumulation and distribution patterns of lead (Pb), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr) in freshwater fish from 2010 to 2020 in nine basins of China (Yangtze River, Pearl River, Yellow River, Haihe River, Huaihe River, Songhua and Liaohe River, Continental, Southeast, and Southwest basins), assessed the health risks, and compared them with those in Chinese marine fish, international freshwater fish, Chinese wild freshwater fish, and artificially cultured freshwater fish. The results showed that 1) the pollution status of the five heavy metals in freshwater fish from nine basins in China is at an intermediate level internationally; 2) the magnitude of heavy metal concentration in four types of artificially farmed freshwater fish and wild freshwater fish is ranked as follows: rice-farmed fish < cage-farmed fish < pond-farmed fish < lake-farmed fish < wild fish; 3) the noncarcinogenic risk factors for heavy metals in freshwater fish in the nine major basins in China were <1 for adults, but the noncarcinogenic risk factors for heavy metals in freshwater fish in the Yellow River, Yangtze River, Pearl River, Songhua and Liaohe River, and Huaihe River basins were all >1 for children.

Levels of metals and elements in tissues of fish species in the Kızılırmak River (Turkey) and assessment of health risks and nutritional benefits

Although the Kızılırmak River, the longest river in Turkey, is home to many fish species, there are a few studies reporting metal levels in fish in the river. The contents of 17 metals and elements (MEs) in various tissues of three fish species and surface water from the river were investigated. Significant differences in the ME levels among tissues were recorded, and the highest levels of most MEs were recorded in the gills and liver. The results revealed that correlations between MEs in tissues and fish size were not clear and consistent. Among the MEs, P (6058-109489) and Zn (933-47556) had the highest bioconcentration factor values. The levels of As and Cd in the river water exceeded water quality criteria. Health risk assessment methods (Target Hazard Quotient, Estimated Daily Intake and Lifetime Carcinogenic Risk) indicated that consumption of the studied fish species is safe. It was estimated that a weekly consumption of 490 g of C. gibelio, or 350 g of C. carpio or 280 g of T. tinca would not cause any health risks. Furthermore, it was found that fish species would provide significant benefits in terms of intake of nutrients such as P, K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn, Fe and Mn. These findings revealed that nutritional benefits from consumption of fish species outweigh the health risks posed by metals in fish.

Investigations of the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon and Elemental Profile of Smoked Fish

Fish are vulnerable to environmental pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and heavy metals. As one of the most commonly applied processing methods, the smoking of different species has been applied globally. Hence, this study aims to investigate the smoking process on the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and elemental accumulation of the five different species (rainbow trout, Atlantic bonito, horse mackerel, sea bass, and Atlantic bluefin tuna) which are commonly processed and traded in the smoked fish industry. The processing yield, water holding capacity, and pH were also investigated. The results revealed that the proximal differences among fish species influence the water holding capacity, processing yield, and pH which are very important for process sustainability and the quality of the end product. The main finding was the proximal composition impact on the accumulation of both PAHs and heavy metals at different levels. While all of the tested samples were below the maximum permissible limit, some of the heavy metals, especially toxic elements, were found above the acceptable limit. Horse mackerel is determined to be the species most vulnerable to PAHs and heavy metal accumulation.

Bio-accumulation and health risk assessment of heavy metals in different edible fish species from Hurghada City, Red Sea, Egypt

BACKGROUND

Heavy metal contamination has become a serious issue in this century especially detected in fish organs. Due to the presence of radioactive compounds in agricultural and sewage effluent, which destroys aquatic ecosystems, threatening human livelihoods. Health hazards associated with low and high consumption consumers assessed in five commercial fish species collected from Hurghada City, Egypt, during winter and summer, 2020. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer technique used for determination heavy meals in different organs and expressed as μg/g wet weight.

RESULTS

Heavy metal concentrations in muscle ranged between:(0.054-0.109), (0.260-1.043), (0.264-0.897), (5.895-11.898), (0.381-0.970), (13.582-29.133) and (0.332-0.589) µg/g for Cd, Pb, Mn, Zn, Cu, Fe and Ni respectively, which were lower than those of gills and liver. These concentrations were within WHO, FAO/WHO, and EU standards. Consumption of edible species was lower than the (TDIs) established by the (JECFA) and Egyptian Standards. Even though THQ and TTHQ values were < 1 while, in children with highly consumer were> 1.

CONCLUSION

This study concluded that intake of Red Sea fish is safe for human health. It is critical for consumers to be aware of the consequences of excessive fish consumption, particularly children with highly consumer, which represent possible health risks.

Species, tissue and gender-related metal and element accumulation in fish species in a large reservoir (Turkey) and health risks and nutritional benefits for consumers

Concentrations of 18 metals and elements (MEs) in the gills, skin, muscle and liver of Carasobarbus luteus and Cyprinus carpio from the Atatürk Reservoir in Turkey were investigated. The results revealed that variations in the ME contents between fish species can be attributed to different diets. The highest contents of most MEs were recorded in the gills. Gender had no significant effect on the contents of most MEs in the tissues of fish species investigated. The relations between MEs in tissues and fish size were not clear and consistent. Health risk assessment methods indicated that consumption of the studied fish species is safe. It was estimated that daily consumption of 140 g of C. carpio or 170 g of C. luteus would not be expected to cause any health risks. Furthermore, it was found that fish species would provide significant benefits in terms of intake of essential MEs.

Tissue-specific distribution and bioaccumulation pattern of trace metals in fish species from the heavily sediment-laden Yellow River, China

The Yellow River is one of the largest contributors to the global riverine sediment flux from the land to the ocean. Tissue-specific bioaccumulation of trace metals in fish from heavily sediment-laden rivers remains unclear to date. The concentrations and distributions of trace metals in water, suspended matters, sediments, and various fish tissues were investigated in the mainstem of the Yellow River were investigated. The concentrations of most metals in abiotic media were high in the Gan-Ning-Meng of upstream and downstream segments, and were highest in fine-sized suspended matters. The highest concentrations of most metals were in the gill and liver, followed by the gonad, and lowest in the muscle, and there were a significant overall differences among the tissues. The concentrations of metals in some tissues (e.g., muscle and gill) significantly differed among regions and feeding habits. The highest values of the bioaccumulation factor for suspended matters (BF_SPM) were observed in the midstream region (e.g., reaching to 19.0 for Se in the liver). This was determined by metal type and tissue specificity, food composition, and concentration of metals in abiotic media. The results highlight the significance of suspended matters for the distribution of trace metals in abiotic and biotic media.

Sediment contamination by trace elements and the associated ecological and health risk assessment: A case study from a large reservoir (Turkey)

Although Keban Reservoir (KR) is Turkey's the second largest man-made reservoir, limited data are available on the contents of trace elements (TEs) in sediments of the KR. The concentrations of 23 less- and commonly-monitored TEs in the sediments from 49 sites in the reservoir were measured to assess health risks, contamination levels and ecological risks of TEs. Concerning median Enrichment Factor values of TEs, chromium (Cr), strontium (Sr) and nickel (Ni) showed moderate enrichment, while other TEs showed minimal enrichment. Pollution Load Index values ranged from 0.33 to 0.63, indicating no a multi-element contamination case in the study area. Low ecological risk was found at 47 sites, while moderate ecological risk was recorded at two sites. The PEC (probable effect concentration) values were exceeded for Ni and Cr. Although wastewater from leather processing factory partly contributed to Cr enrichment at site 2, all TEs mainly originated from lithogenic sources. Median hazard quotient (HQ) values of zirconium (Zr) and lanthanum (La) for children from sediment ingestion were above the risk threshold of unity (HQ = 4.81 and 1.39) and contributed 62.9% and 18.2% of the total health risk. Such high HQ values of Zr and La have never been reported in the literature. Hazard index values for children exceeded those for adults, indicating that children are more vulnerable to health risks than adults. Carcinogenic risk values of arsenic (As) were within the acceptable limits. Our findings indicated that in a multi-element sediment study, some less-monitored elements such as Zr and La may have an important role in health risk assessment even if they are found in the sediment at low concentrations. Therefore, this study can be a model for future similar studies evaluating the health risks of multi-elements in sediments.

Sources, trophodynamics, contamination and risk assessment of toxic metals in a coastal ecosystem by using a receptor model and Monte Carlo simulation

Heavy metal (HM) pollution in coastal ecosystems have posed threats to organisms and human worldwide. This study comprehensively investigated the concentrations, sources, trophodynamics, contamination, and risks of six HMs in the coastal ecosystem of Jiaozhou Bay, northern China, by stable isotope analysis, positive matrix factorization (PMF), and Monte Carlo simulation. Overall, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn were significantly bio-diluted in the food web, while Cr was significantly biomagnified with a trophic magnification factor of 1.23. In addition, trophodynamics of the six HMs was different among fish, mollusk, and crustacean. Furthermore, detailed transfer pathways of six HMs in the food web including eight trophic levels were different from one another. Bioaccumulation order of the six HMs was Cu > Zn > Co, Cr, Ni, and Pb. Zinc concentrations were the highest in seawater, sediments, and organisms. Anthropogenic sources contributed to 71% for Zn, 31% for Cu and Pb, and 27% for Co, Cr, and Ni in the sediment, which was moderately contaminated with moderate ecological risk. However, the human health risk of HMs from eating seafood was relatively low. To protect the Jiaozhou Bay ecosystem, HM contamination should be further controlled in future.

Monitoring heavy metal contamination on the Iranian coasts of the Persian Gulf using biological indicators: risk assessment for the consumers

This research was conducted to determine the concentration of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, and Ni) in the sediments as well as the gill and muscle tissue of Siganus javus and two species of algae (Padina australis and Sargassum vulgare) collected from the Persian Gulf coasts of Bushehr province, which were studied using standard laboratory methods. The general form and trend of metal uptake at different stations in the gill and muscle tissue was Cu > Ni > Pb. The results of the study of metal uptake in both algae showed that the uptake of all three metals was higher in Padina species (Pb ˂ Cu ˂ Ni). The estimated daily intake (EDI), estimated weekly intake (EWI), allowable fish consumption rate limit (CR_lim), and the target hazard quotients (THQ) for the consumption of this fish were also calculated. It was found that the concentration of heavy metals in the edible parts of the fish did not exceed the permissible limits proposed by the WHO, MAFF, JECFA, and NHMRC for human consumption, but the Ni concentration was higher than standard. The consumer risk indexes for non-cancerous diseases due to all metals were lower than standard. Also, the total risk index (HI) in this study was 0.065.

Typical herbicide residues, trophic transfer, bioconcentration, and health risk of marine organisms

Atrazine, a potent herbicide for weeds removal during the growing season, has been widely used in China. It is known to be distributed in aquatic ecosystems with a long half-life, thus presenting a potential risk to species and consumers. This study analyzed the concentrations of degraded atrazine residues in marine organisms (N = 129) including 3 species of mollusks, 2 species of crustaceans, and 15 species of fish from a semi-enclosed bay, Jiaozhou Bay (JZB), adjacent to the Northwest Pacific Ocean in China. The corresponding trophic magnification factors (TMF), bioaccumulation factors (BCFs), and subsequent risks to final consumers were also determined. The results showed an average atrazine concentration of (0.301 ± 0.03) ng g^-1 and (0.305 ± 0.04) ng g^-1 in fish and invertebrates, respectively. The BCFs were (5.23 ± 1.75) L kg^-1 and (5.81 ± 1.31) L kg^-1 for fish and invertebrates, respectively. Atrazine was significantly bio-diluted in JZB through the sampled marine organisms with increasing trophic levels, with a TMF value below 1 (P < 0.01). An analysis of the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) predicted that<0.02% of species were exposed to a dissolved concentration of atrazine (57.88 ng L^-1) that would lead to detrimental effects, while risk quotients predicted low long-term risks for species in the bay. Finally, people with a diet limited to species from JZB were found to face no associated health risk due to a significantly small daily intake and target hazard quotient of atrazine. The corresponding non-carcinogenic effect showed no significant risk from seafood consumption.

The concentration of the potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the muscle of fishes collected from Caspian Sea: A health risk assessment study

In the present study, the concentration of (potentially toxic element) PTEs in the five fish species from the Caspian Sea (from five coastal areas) was measured and compared. The target hazard quotient (THQ) and total THQ (TTHQ) were calculated using Monte Carlo simulations to determine the non-carcinogenic risk in both children and adults consumers. The highest concentration of PTEs was associated with chromium (Cr) measured in Cyprinus carpio, sampled from Bandar Anzali (1.56 ± 0.14 μg/g dw), and the minimum PTEs level was nickel (Ni) in Vimba from Astara (0.02 ± 0.01 μg/g d w). The rank order for PTEs based on THQ was mercury (Hg) > cadmium (Cd) > lead (Pb)> Ni > tin (Sn) > Total Cr. For adults, the fishes rank order based on TTHQ was: Cyprinus carpio (3.268) > Chelon saliens (2.89) > Rutilus frisii kutum kanesky (2.28) > Oncorhynchus mykis (1.39) > Vimba (0.25); and for children was Cyprinus carpio (15.25) > Chelon saliens (13.47) > Rutilus frisii kutum kanesky (10.63) > Oncorhynchus mykis (6.48) > Vimba (1.16). Overall this study showed that the levels of PTEs in investigated fish species had a potential non-carcinogenic risk for both children and adults (TTHQ>1).

Bioaccessibility evaluation of pharmaceuticals in market fish with in vitro simulated digestion

The consumption of pharmaceuticals-contaminated aquatic products could pose risks to human health, and risk assessments considering bioaccessibility can provide better dietary recommendations. In this study, the bioaccessibility of 6 pharmaceuticals (sulfadiazine (SD), sulfapyridine (SPD), roxithromycin (ROX), tylosin (TYL), diclofenac (DIC) and carbamazepine (CMZP)) in several fish species collected from Shanghai markets was evaluated using in vitro simulated digestion. The total mixed pharmaceuticals concentration in freshwater fish were lower than those in marine fish, and statistics showed that the total concentrations of SD, SPD and CMZP in freshwater fish were significantly lower than those of marine fish (p < 0.05). The bioaccessible concentration of each pharmaceutical accounted for 26.3% (TYL) to 101.5% (CMZP) of the total concentration in market fish (n = 70). The bioaccessibility of 6 pharmaceuticals in species of fish was 18.8% (cutlassfish) to 99.6% (bream), which may be related to the physical-chemical properties of the pharmaceutical and the characteristics of the matrix (e.g. lipid content). According to health risk assessments, the consumption of market fish in Shanghai posed no remarkable risk to human health (hazard quotient < 0.099). Ignoring the bioaccessibility of pharmaceuticals in aquatic products might overestimate the human health risks by dietary exposure.

Heavy metal concentrations in wild and farmed gilthead sea bream from southern Mediterranean Sea-human health risk assessment

Arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc concentrations in the edible part of wild and farmed Sparus aurata from Algerian coastal were determined. The highest concentrations of cadmium (0.0078 mg kg^-1 wet weight), copper (0.98 mg kg^-1 w.w), and zinc (5.1 mg kg^-1 w.w) were recorded in farmed sea bream, whereas the highest arsenic (5.02 mg kg^-1 w.w) and lead (0.006 mg kg^-1 w.w) levels were registered in wild one. The statistical analysis (Friedman test, p < 0.05) indicated that the origin of fish (wild, farmed in a cage, and farmed in raceway) has relevance to the distribution of metal. Estimated weekly intake of inorganic arsenic, cadmium, and lead for a 72.5-kg person consuming Sparus aurata from Algeria does not exceed 1% of the WHO/JECFA recommended rate for all metals, certainly due to the limited consumption of seafood products by the local population. The total target hazard index is far less than "one" 1, and the carcinogenic risk for arsenic exceeds the acceptable value of 10^-5. Based on the result of this study, the potential risk to human health from the consumption of contaminate farmed sea bream (in the cage) should be considered.

Source and risk assessment of heavy metals and microplastics in bivalves and coastal sediments of the Northern Persian Gulf, Hormogzan Province

The objectives of the current study are to investigate the concentration, biological risks, chemical speciation, and mobility of of heavy metals and also the determination of their distribution, physicochemical characteristics, and abundance of microplastics in coastal sediments and edible bivalves in the Persian Gulf, the coastal area of Hormozgan Province. Sampling points were selected considering the location of industrial, urban and Hara forest protected areas. In November 2017, a total of 18 sediment samples from coastal sediments (top 0-10 cm) and the most consumed bivalve species in the region were collected from two stations, Lengeh and Bandar Abbas Ports. The average concentration of heavy metals (except for Ni and Cd) in the sediments were lower than their average shale and the upper continental crust. Enrichment factors revealed significant enrichment of Ni, Mn, Cr, Cd and As. The fractionation of heavy metals using the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction scheme indicated the high bioavailability of Zn, As, Mn, and Co. In general, the highest concentration of Mo, Cd, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cu, Mn, Hg, and Sb was detected in areas with frequent human activities including Shahid Rajaee Port, Shahid Bahonar Port, and Tavanir station. Shahid Rajaee and Shahid Bahonar Ports are the most important ports on the coast of Hormozgan province. The Risk Assessment Code calculated for the study elements indicates that As, Co, Zn, and Cu pose a moderate environmental risk a threat to the aquatic biota. Health risks of most heavy metals arising from bivalves consumption were safe, except for As which is associated with the high target cancer risk values. With reference to the type of microplastics found, they were mainly fibeours with lengths ranging between 100 and 250 μm in sediments and bivalves. Most of the microfibers found in the sediments were made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP), and the fibers found in the bivalves were made of PP.

A comparison of trace element concentrations in surface and deep water of the Keban Dam Lake (Turkey) and associated health risk assessment

Keban Dam Lake (KDL) is the second largest dam lake in Turkey. There have been some reports on the trace element (TE) levels in surface water of the KDL, but its deep water has been never studied. We measured 17 TEs (Pb, Hg, Cd, As, Cr, Ni, Co, Mn, Cu, Fe, Al, Sr, U, V, Zn, Zr and Ba) in surface and deep water samples and assessed their health risks for residential and recreational receptors. Copper, Zn, Ba, Ni, Mn and Pb levels in deep water were higher than those in surface water. Total TE level in deep water was higher in wet season, whereas that in surface water was higher in dry season. TE levels in both surface and deep water were much lower than the guideline values for drinking water and the protection of freshwater aquatic life, indicating that TEs in the KDL originate from natural sources. All HQ (hazard quotient) and HI (hazard index) values were below the risk threshold of unity. HI values for child were higher than those for adult, indicating that the health of children is at dramatically higher risk than adults. Arsenic and U for water ingestion were the primary contributors to total risk (HI), while V and Cr for dermal pathway. The presence of U and V, among the TEs which are major contributors to total health risk, reveals the necessity of monitoring of such less-studied elements in the surface water bodies. Carcinogenic risk values of As and Cr in surface and deep water were below the target risk of 1 × 10^-4. These findings indicated that TEs in surface and deep water of the KDL do not pose health risks to residential and recreational users. Thus this study may serve as a model for similar studies assessing health risks of multi-elements in freshwater bodies in future.

Trophodynamics of arsenic for different species in coastal regions of the Northwest Pacific Ocean: In situ evidence and a meta-analysis

China has been the major fishery producer in the Northwest Pacific Ocean for decades and the seafood safety deserves continuous concern. In this study, 188 organism and 27 sediment samples were collected from the Jiaozhou Bay, a typical semi-enclosed bay adjacent to the Northwest Pacific Ocean, to study the arsenic (As) pollution level and trophodynamics in the coastal regions of China combined with a meta-analysis. Results showed that arsenic was the most abundant in crustaceans with the average of 28.84 ± 4.95 mg/kg in dry weight, in comparison with molluscs (18.68 ± 2.51 mg/kg) and fish (9.31 ± 1.45 mg/kg). Additionally, based on a meta-analysis, arsenic in coastal organisms generally decreased from north to south in China. With increasing values of δ¹⁵N, arsenic was significantly biomagnified in the molluscs but bio-diluted in the groups of crustaceans and fish. When all the species were taken into consideration, overall bio-dilution of As was observed through the simplified food chain in the Jiaozhou Bay. Based on the target hazard quotient (THQ), the health risk of consuming seafood from the Jiaozhou Bay was not significant except for several kinds of crustaceans. The smaller THQs indicated lower health risk of eating molluscs and fish than crustaceans. Besides, urban households tended to undertake much higher risk than rural households. Based on our results, it is recommended for urban citizens to reduce the frequency of consuming crustaceans and give preference to fish when choosing seafood.

Levels of metals in fish tissues of Liza haematocheila and Lateolabrax japonicus from the Yellow River Delta of China and risk assessment for consumers

The Yellow River Delta (YRD) is an important spawning and nursery area for numerous fishes. The concentrations of Fe, Al, Mn, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cu, Co, Pb and Cd in muscle, liver, gills and skin of two broadly distributed commercial fish in the YRD were analyzed. The results demonstrated that liver and gills displayed higher accumulation ability of metals than other tissues, while muscle always accumulated the lowest concentrations of metals. Generally, significant opposite relationships (p < 0.05) were observed between fish size and metals in fish tissues especially in muscles of both fish species which may be explained by the lower feeding rate, stronger detoxification and elimination mechanisms in the bigger individuals. All metals in muscles were well below the proposed toxic limit. Besides, the toxic effects were not expected to occur for the consumption of muscles of studied fish according to the results of human health risk assessment.

Environmental, ecological and health risks of trace metals in sediments of a large reservoir on the Euphrates River (Turkey)

The contents of trace metals (Cd, As, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, Mn and Fe) in sediment samples from eleven sampling sites in The Keban Dam Reservoir, which is Turkey's second biggest reservoir, were examined to evaluate spatial distribution, possible sources, contamination status and environmental, ecological and health risks of these metals. The results indicated that enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index and contamination factor values were higher at sampling sites receiving industrial and domestic wastewater discharges. Only Cr and Ni concentrations exceeded their corresponding probable effect concentrations in 47.7% and 93.2% of the samples. Ecological risk factor and ecological risk index values at all sites were <40 and <150, respectively, indicating low ecological risk in the reservoir. Cluster, correlation and factor analyses suggested that Cr and Ni originated from mixed sources of lithogenic and anthropogenic origins, while other metals mainly originated from natural sources. For children and adults, hazard quotient value of each metal from ingestion and dermal contact pathways did not exceed 1. Carcinogenic risk (CR) values of arsenic from these two exposure pathways and total CR value were within the range of acceptable risks. Thus, in terms of recreational uses, the reservoir is considered to be safe for human health.

Accumulation of trace elements in muscle, gill and liver of fish species (Capoeta umbla and Luciobarbus mystaceus) in the Tigris River (Turkey), and health risk assessment

Two fish species (Capoeta umbla and Luciobarbus mystaceus) were collected from the Tigris River (Turkey), and tissues (gill, muscle and liver) of fish samples were analyzed for Cd, As, Mn, Cr, Cu, Co and Ni using the inductively coupled plasma-tandem mass spectrometry. Significant differences were present between fish species in regard to trace element (TE) concentrations in muscle for Mn, in liver for Cu, Cd and Mn, and in gill for As, Co, Cu and Cd (p < 0.05). Liver had the highest total TE concentration, followed by gill and muscle. Significant negative correlations were recorded between fish size (length and weight) and TE concentrations in the tissues. Both fish species showed no gender differences in TE accumulation in muscle, gill and liver (p > 0.05). The estimated daily intakes for all TEs were much lower than the tolerable daily intakes. The target hazard quotient (THQ) and total THQ values of all TEs did not exceed 1, which means that non-carcinogenic health effects are not expected for the consumers. Arsenic carcinogenic risk values were within acceptable range. Mean Cd concentrations in muscle tissue of both fish species exceeded the maximum permissible limit set by the European Commission Regulation, while mean concentrations of As, Cr and Cu were below the legislated limits.

Health risks from trace elements in muscles of some commonly available fish in Australia and India

The levels of trace elements (As, Hg, Cr, Cd, Pb, Co, Ni, Cu, Mn and Zn) in commercially important fish species sampled from fish markets of Adelaide, Australia; canned fish from South Australian supermarkets; and fish markets of West Bengal, India were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after microwave digestion. Mercury was determined by using triple quadrupole ICP-MS. The accuracy of the methods was assessed with a certified standard reference material (NRCC-DORM-3 dogfish protein), and the results were compared with values reported in the literature. The results indicated considerable variations in the accumulation of trace elements among the fish species. The relationship between species with respect to trace element concentrations was examined using cluster analysis, which showed Indian fish species forming distinct groups from the others. Other than As in sardines, whiting and snapper and Hg in swordfish and snapper, the trace element concentrations were within permissible limits recommended by various standards. Based on the estimated daily intake (EDI), fish samples analysed in this study can be considered safe for human consumption as per the recommended daily dietary allowance limit fixed by various agencies. Continuous monitoring and assessments of fish metal(loid) content are needed to generate more data and safeguard human health.

Metal concentrations in fish from nine lakes of Anhui Province and the health risk assessment

In the present study, to comprehensively investigate the metal contamination in the fish of Anhui Province, four fish species, Ctenopharyngodon idella, Cyprinus carpio, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, and Hypophthalmichthys nobilis, were collected from nine lakes, and the levels of Zn, Pb, Cr, Cu, Ni, As, Hg, and Cd in the fish muscle were determined. The results showed that the highest concentrations of Zn (7.791 mg/kg), Pb (0.522 mg/kg), Cr (0.030 mg/kg), and Cu (0.767 mg/kg) were found in Tiangang Lake, Xifei Lake, Tiangang Lake and Baidang Lake, respectively. However, metals Ni, As, Hg, and Cd were not detected in all fish samples. In the fish species, the metal bioaccumulation ability was decreased with the following order: C. idellus > H. molitrix > H. nobilis > C. carpio. Furthermore, the target hazard quotient (THQ) was used to assess the health risk via fish consumption. The results indicated for co-exposure; C. idellus would pose a health risk to children at high exposure level (95th) as THQ value was higher than 1. It should be pointed out that Pb contributes most to the total THQs (the ratio was 88%); thus, the contamination of Pb should be paid more attention. This field investigation combined with health risk assessment would provide useful information on the heavy metal pollution in Anhui Province.

Heavy metals in aquatic products and the health risk assessment to population in China

In this paper, a total of 62,712 aquatic product samples were collected from 32 provinces of China during 2015-2017. By analyzing the spatial distributions and non-parametric tests of five heavy metals (lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and arsenic (As)) in four aquatic product (fish (n = 44,353), shrimp (n = 8453), crab (n = 5367), and shellfish (n = 4539)), it was found that the concentrations of the five heavy metals in the same aquatic product are significantly different in different regions. Furthermore, we calculated daily estimated intake (EDI) of each of the five heavy metals and assessed non-cancer risk and cancer risk using target hazard quotient (THQ) and target cancer risk (TR), respectively. The results showed that for mean exposure levels, the THQ values in four aquatic products were all below one, meaning that there was no non-carcinogenic risk. For high exposure levels, the hazard index (HI) value exceeded one in fish in North China, which means the potential non-carcinogenic risk should not be ignored. As for cadmium, most of the TR values in crab and shellfish exceed 1 × 10^-4 in North China, East China, and South China. For chromium, except for Northeast China, the TR values in fish in other regions exceed 1 × 10^-4; it indicated that the cancer risk caused by cadmium or chromium should not be ignored.

Macroelements and toxic trace elements in muscle and liver of fish species from the largest three reservoirs in Turkey and human risk assessment based on the worst-case scenarios

Macroelement (Na, K, Ca, Mg and P) and toxic trace element (As, Cd and Pb) contents were investigated in muscle and liver of the two fish species (common carp and trout barb) from the largest three reservoirs (Atatürk, Keban and Karakaya) in Turkey. Also, human health risks for consumers using the worst-case scenarios were assessed. Potassium was the most abundant macroelement in muscle of both fish species in all reservoirs, whereas phosphorus was the most abundant in liver. Toxic trace element contents in the liver of the two fish species from the three reservoirs were higher than those in muscle. The mean levels of As and Pb in muscle and liver of fish species from the Karakaya Reservoir were higher than those from the other two reservoirs. Three-way ANOVA showed that the interaction between fish species, reservoir and fish tissue was significant for only Cd (p < 0.01). The maximum levels of As, Cd and Pb in muscle and liver of fish species from the three reservoirs were below permissible limits. The estimated daily intakes of toxic trace elements in fish species were much lower than their corresponding tolerable daily intakes. The target hazard quotient (THQ) and total THQ values in fish species were below 1, which indicated that non-carcinogenic health effects are not expected. The carcinogenic risk values for inorganic arsenic were within acceptable range. The results revealed that toxic trace elements in common carp and trout barb from the Atatürk, Keban and Karakaya reservoirs do not pose a significant health risk to consumers.

Occurrence, trophic transfer, and health risk assessment of bisphenol analogues in seafood from the Persian Gulf

The presence of chemicals in marine organisms is an important issue for human health due to the growing rate of seafood consumption. Potential exposure to seven bisphenol analogues through seafood consumption was investigated in some popular seafood from the Persian Gulf. Bisphenols were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol B (BPB) were the first and second most common bisphenols in the studied samples, respectively. The highest levels of BPA (mean 13.58 ± 5.70 μg/kg.dw) and BPB (mean 10.30 ± 7.98 μg/kg.dw) were found in E.coioides species. Bisphenol F and bisphenol AF were detected only in P. armatus and L. klunzingeri, respectively. Trophic transfer investigation demonstrated that BPA and BPB were biomagnified in the studied organisms through their diet. The eco-toxicity and estrogenic risk assessment indicated that seafood consumption does not pose a health threat to consumers. However, routine monitoring of bisphenols in seafood seems to be necessary to ensure food safety.

Spatio-temporal changes in surface water quality and sediment phosphorus content of a large reservoir in Turkey

The Keban Dam Reservoir, located on the Euphrates River, is the second largest reservoir of Turkey. Water quality of this reservoir is of great importance because it is widely used for recreation, aquaculture production, fishing, and irrigation. In this study, discriminant analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), factor analysis (FA) and cluster analysis (CA) were conducted to evaluate the seasonal and spatial variations in surface water quality of the reservoir. Also, total phosphorus (TP) content in sediments, water type and trophic status of the reservoir were determined. For this, 19 water quality variables and TP in sediments were monitored seasonally at 11 sampling stations on the reservoir during one year. Hierarchical CA classified 11 stations into three groups, i.e., upstream (moderate polluted), midstream (low polluted) and downstream (clean) regions. PCA/FA allowed to group the variables responsible for variations in water quality, which are mainly related to mineral dissolution (natural), organic matter and nutrients (anthropogenic), and physical parameters (natural). Discriminant analysis (DA) gave better results for both data reduction and spatio-temporal analysis. Stepwise temporal DA identified eight variables: water temperature (WT), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrate nitrogen (NO₃-N), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), potassium (K⁺), magnesium (Mg²⁺), and calcium (Ca²⁺), which are the most significant variables responsible for temporal variations in water quality of the reservoir, while stepwise spatial DA identified three variables: K⁺, chloride (Cl^-), and sulphate (SO₄^-2), which are the most significant variables responsible for spatial variations. According to Ontario sediment-quality guidelines, sediments of the reservoir can be considered as unpolluted in terms of mean TP content. The water type of the reservoir was calcium-bicarbonate. According to trophic state index values based on TP and Chl-a, upstream region (moderate polluted) of the reservoir was in the eutrophic status, whereas other regions were in the mesotrophic status.

Health Risk Assessment of Metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, Hg, Se) in Angling Fish with Different Lengths Collected from Liuzhou, China

Wild fish caught by anglers (WFAs) were confirmed to be usually contaminated with metals, and the contamination status is radically affected by the growth and length of the fish. To determine the contamination levels of metals and health risks in WFAs with different length ranges of fish, this study ascertained the concentration of eight metals, including Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, Hg and Se, in 171 wild fishes collected from the watershed of Liujiang River. The assessment of metal pollution and health risks from the consumption of these fishes with seven length ranges were accomplished. The obtained results implied a relatively high concentration of Zn, Cr, and Cd up to 109.294 mg/kg, 4.226 mg/kg, and 0.196 mg/kg (wet weight), respectively, which exceed the corresponding Maximum Residue Limit (MRL). The negative correlation between Cu, Zn, Cr, and Cd was observed to be significant with fish length, signifying a possible occurrence of biological dilution on these metals. The WFAs were mostly contaminated with Cr and Cd irrespective of the length ranges of fish, which were denoted by the average pollution index (Pi) of Cr and Cd and were commonly found to be beyond 0.2. Based on the results of health risk assessment analysis, most of the target hazard quotient (THQ) values of Cr were below 1, implying that the consumption of wild fish for adults has insignificant health risk. For children, the total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) values of beyond 1 were found in fishes with the length range of <25 cm, particularly a TTHQ value 1.627 in the range of 10–15 cm, indicating that children are being prone to serious health risks owing to the consumption of WFAs. The weekly recommended consumption of WFAs with the length range of 10–15 cm for adults and children was 0.298 kg/week and 0.149 kg/week, respectively. These are substantially lower than the current rate of fish consumption (0.42 kg/week), and therefore, the wild fish with the length range of 10–15 cm should be avoided for consumption.

Potential health risk assessment of toxic metals contamination in clay eaten as pica (geophagia) among pregnant women of Ho in the Volta Region of Ghana

INTRODUCTION

Geophagia although pleasurable and somewhat a necessity among pregnant women, also comes along with its own attendant problems such as exposure to potentially hazardous substances like bacteria, fungi, helminthes and ova, radioactive materials, and toxic elemental minerals in the soil depending on the geographical location.

METHODOLOGY

This study evaluated the potential health risk involved during the exposure of pregnant women to toxic elemental minerals via the consumption of clay as pica (geophagia). Elemental mineral analysis was carried out using Buck Scientific 210VGP Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (Buck Scientific, Inc. East Norwalk, USA). Risk assessment methods were also used to ascertain the various risks factors and the overall risk level.

RESULTS

Concentrations of the macro elements investigated were 1.38 ± 1.5, 2.40 ± 1.5, 7.74 ± 1.5, 4.01 ± 1.0, 13.24 ± 2.2 and 13.76 ± 2.1 mg/Kg for iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg) and sodium (Na) respectively. While that for the micro elements were 1.63 ± 0.03 μg/Kg, 4.72 ± 0.8, 0.53 ± 0.02 and 1.85 ± 0.3 mg/kg respectively for arsenic (As), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb) and nickel (Ni). Estimated Daily Intake (EDI), Hazard Quotient (HQ), Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) and Total Target Hazard Quotient (TTHQ) values ranged 0.611-5.44 (mg/kg Bw/day), 6.26 × 10^- 4 - 106.5, 0.067-10.34 and 15 respectively.

CONCLUSION

There is the likelihood of posing adverse health problems when clay samples obtained from Anfoega which is sited in the Volta region of Ghana is consumed due to the fact that the HQ's of these elemental minerals were > 1 which points to high content of Manganese (Mn) and Nickel (Ni). It is also likely to cause adverse health problems in an individual's life time since THQ for Arsenic, Lead and Nickel were above 1. Ultimately, the cumulative effect of these toxicants were exceedingly great (≤ 15) which implied a high level of unsafety associated with this clay. Per the results from this study, it is not safe for pregnant women to consume clay as pica since these toxic elements may cause detrimental effects on the foetus of the unborn child.

Health risk assessment and levels of toxic metals in fishes (Oreochromis noliticus and Clarias anguillaris) from Ankobrah and Pra basins: Impact of illegal mining activities on food safety

Arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are toxic heavy metals that naturally occur in the ecosystem. Their levels are on the rise due to anthropogenic activities posing threat to aquatic wildlife and humans. In Ghana, pollution of some water bodies has led to unsafe consumption of riverine fishes as well as a shortage of treated potable water principally because the cost of treating polluted water has become expensive across the country. This study aimed to assess the As, Hg, Pb and Cd concentrations in water and fishes from rivers Pra and Ankobrah where activities of artisanal gold mining were carried out resulting in gross pollution of the water bodies. An experimental study was performed to ascertain the levels of As, Hg, Pb and Cd in fish species of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis noliticus) and mudfish (Clarias anguillaris) and aquatic media (water) from the Pra and River Ankobrah basins using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) (Varian AA240FS). Both river water samples recorded ranges of 0- 0.0040, 0.0060- 0.0387, 0 - 0.0020, 0.006-0.0093 mg/l for Cadmium, Lead, Arsenic and Mercury respectively. For Cadmium and Arsenic, their levels were comparable (p > 0.05). However, detected values for Lead and Mercury were no comparable (p < 0.05). Toxic metals concentrations in the rivers decreased in the order of Hg > Pb > Cd > As. For the fish samples, values ranged 0-0.08, 0.04-0.42, 0-0.04, and 0.40- 0.60 mg/kg for Cadmium, Lead, Arsenic and Mercury respectively. Generally, appreciably high values were obtained for Mercury. Toxic metals concentrations in the rivers decreased in the order of Hg > Pb > Cd > As. Human health risk assessment from heavy metal exposure through fish consumption from the Rivers for both children and adults showed no significant non-carcinogenic adverse health risk to humans since all calculated values for Hazard Quotient (HQ) were <1. Nonetheless, Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) values calculated for children and adult exposure to Cadmium and Mercury were>1 which implied a likely cause of adverse effects during a person's lifetime.

Risk assessment of using fish from different types of reservoirs as human food - A study on European perch (Perca fluviatilis)

Concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn in sediment samples and muscle tissue of the European perch were analyzed using inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), with the aim to assess the potential ecological (RI) and human health risk, and the degree of contamination (C_d) of three types of reservoirs in Serbia, based on their purpose: electricity generation (Vlasina, Perućac, Zaovine, and Međuvršje), drinking water supply (Garaši), and recreation (Lake Sava). The concentrations of the studied elements were higher in sediments than in fish. However, the levels of Cd in fish caught in Vlasina, Zaovine, and Međuvršje, Hg in Perućac and Garaši, and Pb in Lake Sava exceeded the maximum allowed concentrations. The pollution load index (PLI) indicated that sediments in all six reservoirs were contaminated, but C_d was low; a moderate contamination with Cd was observed in Vlasina, Perućac, and Zaovine, Cr in Zaovine and Međuvršje, and Cu in Međuvršje. A low RI was recorded for all studied reservoirs. Cd was found to be the primary contamination and ecological risk factor. Total target hazard quotient (THQ) and target carcinogenic risk factor (TR) were higher for fishers operating in these reservoirs than for the general population. Higher values of PLI, C_d, RI, and TR were observed in electricity generation reservoirs. Results indicated that this type of reservoirs suffer from higher anthropogenic pressure and/or have a worse pollution management policy compared with other types of reservoirs included in this study, especially the drinking water supply reservoir.

Geochemical characteristics, partitioning, quantitative source apportionment, and ecological and health risk of heavy metals in sediments and water: A case study in Shadegan Wetland, Iran

Heavy metal concentrations were investigated in water and sediments of Shadegan Wetland southwest of Iran to assess the fate, partitioning, and risk assessment and also to quantify the sources of heavy metals using MLR-APCS (multiple linear regression of absolute principal component scores) receptor model. The relatively high values of K_d (partition coefficient) for Pb, Zn, Ni, As, and V revealed their affinity for being enriched in sediments while Sb, Mo, and Se exhibited greater partitioning towards water. Enrichment factors of Se, Cd, Pb, Mo, Co, Zn, and Cu revealed significant to moderate contamination and should be of some concern. Application of the modified ecological risk index (MRI) revealed sediments moderate to high risk. Hazard index values for Hg were found less than the safe level. MLR-APCS model indicated that anthropogenic sources in sediments were responsible for 80.9%, 73.2%, 73.1%, 88.6% and 74.2% of Se, Mo, Hg, Pb, and Zn, respectively.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and potentially toxic elements in seafood from the Persian Gulf: presence, trophic transfer, and chronic intake risk assessment

High bioavailability of man-made pollutants in marine environments raises serious concern regarding the safety of seafood. In the present study, the presence, trophic transfer, and risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in 170 benthic marine organisms (87 prawn; 28 crab; 55 fish) from the Persian Gulf were investigated. Among investigated species, E. coioides displayed the lowest level of metal pollution index (MPI), while P. armatus and P. semisulcatus showed the highest level of MPI and total PAHs, respectively. Principal component biplot exhibited a significant association of PTEs (except Hg) and PAHs in less motile benthic species. The results of trophic transfer investigation revealed that PTEs (except Hg) and PAHs were not biomagnified in the studied organisms through diet. However, Hg biomagnification factors greater than 1 indicated trophic transfer of mercury. In order to gain nutritional benefits of seafood, consumption of two fish/prawn meals/week for adults (except vulnerable groups such as pregnant women) and one fish/prawn meals/week for children is recommended. However, lifelong consumption of crabs (P. armatus) may threaten human health. In addition, the maximum allowable fish consumption rate (CR_lim) for studied fish is 120 g fish/day for adults and 30 g fish/day for children. In the case of prawns, the safe dose is 30 and 10 g prawns/day for adults and children, respectively.

Evaluation of health risks from exposure to arsenic and heavy metals through consumption of ten fish species

In this study, the levels of 11 heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) were determined in ten different fish species (wild, farmed, freshwater, and marine) frequently consumed in Turkey and compared with the maximum permissible limits (MPLs) established by international standards. Also, human health risks for the consumers were assessed. Among 11 HMs, only Al and Cr levels did not show significant differences among fish species. The highest concentrations of As were found in red mullet, which is a demersal fish. The average concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, and Pb in all fish species were below the MPLs, whereas those of Zn in European anchovy and Mediterranean horse mackerel, and that of inorganic As in red mullet exceeded the MPLs. The highest and lowest toxic metal contents (Al, As, Cd, and Pb) were recorded in red mullet and farmed rainbow trout, respectively. The estimated daily intakes of HMs in each fish species were very lower than their corresponding tolerable daily intakes, suggesting the daily intake of HMs through fish consumption would not pose health risks for the consumers. The target hazard quotient for individual HMs and hazard index for combined HMs in fish species were below 1, which indicated that non-carcinogenic health effects are not expected. The carcinogenic risk results revealed that there was a carcinogenic risk from exposure to inorganic As via the consumption of red mullet. Among all investigated fish species, rainbow trout and common carp were safer in terms of both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks from exposure to HMs.

Editorial of the VSI "Antibiotics and heavy metals in the environment: Facing the challenge"

The Virtual Special Issue (VSI) "Antibiotics and Heavy Metals in the Environment: Facing the Challenge" received more than 100 submissions from research teams around the world. Finally, more than 50 papers were accepted and published. These very interesting research papers allow going ahead in the knowledge of different aspects which determine the fate of antibiotics and heavy metals in the environmental. The success of the VSI, as well as reports from scientific databases, indicate that this field of research is clearly growing, which is expected to continue, especially considering emerging pollutants as a whole.
