Chemical composition and source apportionment of ambient, household, and personal exposures to PM2.5 in communities using biomass stoves in rural China

Unveiling the airborne microbial menace: Novel insights into pathogenic bacteria and fungi in bioaerosols from nursery schools to universities

Bacterial and fungal aerosol pollution is widespread in indoor school environments, and poses potential health risks to students and staff. Understanding the distribution and diversity of microbial communities within aerosols is crucial to mitigate their adverse effects. Existing knowledge regarding the composition of bacterial and fungal aerosols, particularly the presence of potential pathogenic microorganisms in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from nursery schools to universities, is limited. To bridge this knowledge gap, in the present study, we collected PM2.5 samples from five types of schools (i.e., nursery schools, primary schools, junior schools, and high schools and universities) in China. We used advanced single-molecule real-time sequencing to analyze the species-level diversity of bacterial and fungal components in PM2.5 samples based on 16S and ITS ribosomal genes, respectively. We found significant differences in microbial diversity and community composition among the samples obtained from different educational institutions and pollution levels. In particularly, junior schools exhibited higher PM2.5 concentrations (62.2-86.6 μg/m3) than other schools (14.4-48.4 μg/m3). Moreover, microbial variations in PM2.5 samples were associated with institution type. Notably, the prevailing pathogenic microorganisms included Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Schizophyllum commune, all of which were identified as Class II Pathogenic Microorganisms in school settings. Four potentially novel strains of S. commune were identified in PM2.5 samples collected from the university; the four strains showed 92.4 %-94.1 % ITS sequence similarity to known Schizophyllum isolates. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to explore bacterial and fungal diversity within PM2.5 samples from nursery schools to universities. Overall, these findings contribute to the existing knowledge of school environmental microbiology to ensure the health and safety of students and staff and impacting public health.

Chronic household air pollution and exposure patterns among Himalayan nomads

BACKGROUND

Household air pollution (HAP) is a major risk factor of non-communicable diseases, causing millions of premature deaths each year in developing nations. Populations living at high altitudes are particularly vulnerable to HAP and associated health outcomes.

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to explore the relationships between activity patterns, HAP, and an HAP biomarker among 100 Himalayan nomadic households during both cooking and heating-only periods.

METHODS

Household CO was monitored in 100 rural homes in Qinghai, China, at 3500 m on the Himalayan Plateau among Himalayan nomads. Carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) was used as a biomarker to assess exposure among 100 male and 100 female heads of household. Linear mixed-effects models were used to explore the relationship between COHb and activity patterns.

RESULTS

Cooking periods were associated with 7 times higher household CO concentrations compared with heating periods (94 ± 56 ppm and 13 ± 11 ppm, respectively). Over the three-day biomarker-monitoring period in each house, 99% of subjects had at least one COHb measurement exceeding the WHO safety level of 2%. Cooking was associated with a 32% increase in COHb (p < 0.001).

IMPACT STATEMENT

This study on household air pollution (HAP) in high-altitude regions provides important insights into the exposure patterns of nomadic households in Qinghai, China. The study found that cooking is the primary factor influencing acute carbon monoxide (CO) exposure among women, while heating alone is sufficient to elevate CO exposure above WHO guidelines. The results suggest that cooking-only interventions have the potential to reduce HAP exposure among women, but solutions for both cooking and heating may be required to reduce COHb to below WHO guidelines. This study's findings may inform future interventions for fuel and stove selection to reduce HAP and exposure among other populations.

Research progress on the characteristics, sources, and environmental and potential health effects of water-soluble organic compounds in atmospheric particulate matter

Water-soluble organic compounds (WSOCs) have received extensive attention due to their indistinct chemical components, complex sources, negative environmental impact, and potential health effects. To the best of our knowledge, until now, there has been no comprehensive review focused on the research progress of WSOCs. This paper reviewed the studies on chemical constituent and characterization, distribution condition, sources, environmental impact, as well as the potential health effects of WSOCs in the past 13 years. Moreover, the main existing challenges and directions for the future research on WSOCs were discussed from several aspects. Because of the complex composition of WSOCs and many unknown individual components that have not been detected, there is still a need for the identification and quantification of WSOCs. As modern people spend more time in indoor environments, it is meaningful to fill the gaps in the component characteristics and sources of indoor WSOCs. In addition, although in vitro cell experiments have shown that WSOCs could induce cellular oxidative stress and trigger the inflammatory response, the corresponding mechanisms of action need to be further explored. The current population epidemiology research of WSOCs is missing. Prospectively, we propose to conduct a comprehensive and simultaneous analysis strategy for concentration screening, source apportionment, potential health effects, and action mechanisms of WSOCs based on high throughput omics coupled with machine learning simulation and prediction.

Household concentrations and female and child exposures to air pollution in peri-urban sub-Saharan Africa: measurements from the CLEAN-Air(Africa) study

BACKGROUND

Relatively clean cooking fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) emit less fine particulate matter (PM2·5) and carbon monoxide (CO) than polluting fuels (eg, wood, charcoal). Yet, some clean cooking interventions have not achieved substantial exposure reductions. This study evaluates determinants of between-community variability in exposures to household air pollution (HAP) across sub-Saharan Africa.

METHODS

In this measurement study, we recruited households cooking primarily with LPG or exclusively with wood or charcoal in peri-urban Cameroon, Ghana, and Kenya from previously surveyed households. In 2019-20, we conducted monitoring of 24 h PM2·5 and CO kitchen concentrations (n=256) and female cook (n=248) and child (n=124) exposures. PM2·5 measurements used gravimetric and light scattering methods. Stove use monitoring and surveys on cooking characteristics and ambient air pollution exposure (eg, walking time to main road) were also administered.

FINDINGS

The mean PM2·5 kitchen concentration was five times higher among households cooking with charcoal than those using LPG in the Kenyan community (297 μg/m3, 95% CI 216-406, vs 61 μg/m3, 49-76), but only 4 μg/m3 higher in the Ghanaian community (56 μg/m3, 45-70, vs 52 μg/m3, 40-68). The mean CO kitchen concentration in charcoal-using households was double the WHO guideline (6·11 parts per million [ppm]) in the Kenyan community (15·81 ppm, 95% CI 8·71-28·72), but below the guideline in the Ghanaian setting (1·77 ppm, 1·04-2·99). In all communities, mean PM2·5 cook exposures only met the WHO interim-1 target (35 μg/m3) among LPG users staying indoors and living more than 10 min walk from a road.

INTERPRETATION

Community-level variation in the relative difference in HAP exposures between LPG and polluting cooking fuel users in peri-urban sub-Saharan Africa might be attributed to differences in ambient air pollution levels. Thus, mitigation of indoor and outdoor PM2·5 sources will probably be critical for obtaining significant exposure reductions in rapidly urbanising settings of sub-Saharan Africa.

Source apportionment for indoor air pollution: Current challenges and future directions

Source apportionment (SA) for indoor air pollution is challenging due to the multiplicity and high variability of indoor sources, the complex physical and chemical processes that act as primary sources, sinks and sources of precursors that lead to secondary formation, and the interconnection with the outdoor environment. While the major indoor sources have been recognized, there is still a need for understanding the contribution of indoor versus outdoor-generated pollutants penetrating indoors, and how SA is influenced by the complex processes that occur in indoor environments. This paper reviews our current understanding of SA, through reviewing information on the SA techniques used, the targeted pollutants that have been studied to date, and their source apportionment, along with limitations or knowledge gaps in this research field. The majority (78 %) of SA studies to date focused on PM chemical composition/size distribution, with fewer studies covering organic compounds such as ketones, carbonyls and aldehydes. Regarding the SA method used, the majority of studies have used Positive Matrix Factorization (31 %), Principal Component Analysis (26 %) and Chemical Mass Balance (7 %) receptor models. The indoor PM sources identified to date include building materials and furniture emissions, indoor combustion-related sources, cooking-related sources, resuspension, cleaning and consumer products emissions, secondary-generated pollutants indoors and other products and activity-related emissions. The outdoor environment contribution to the measured pollutant indoors varies considerably (<10 %- 90 %) among the studies. Future challenges for this research area include the need for optimization of indoor air quality monitoring and data selection as well as the incorporation of physical and chemical processes in indoor air into source apportionment methodology.

Cross-sectional study of household solid fuel use and renal function in older adults in China

BACKGROUND

Emerging evidence links outdoor air pollution and declined renal function but the relationship between household air pollution and renal function is not well understood.

METHODS

Using cross-sectional data from the multi-provincial INTERMAP-China Prospective Study, we collected blood samples and questionnaire information on stove use and socio-demographic factors. We calculated estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) from serum creatinine to assess renal function. Participants with eGFR <60 mL/min per 1.73 m2 were defined as having chronic kidney disease (CKD) in this analysis. Generalized estimating equations were used to estimate the association of household fuel with renal function and prevalent CKD in models adjusting for confounders.

RESULTS

Among the 646 enrolled adults (40-79y; 56% female), one-third exclusively used clean fuel (gas and electric) cookstoves and 11% of northern China participants (n = 49 of 434) used only clean fuel heaters, whereas the rest used solid fuel. In multivariable models, use of solid fuel cookstoves was associated with 0.17 ml/min/1.73 m2 (95% CI: -0.30, 0.64) higher eGFR and 19% (0.86, 1.64) higher prevalence of CKD than exclusive clean fuel use. Greater intensity of solid fuel use was associated with 0.25 ml/min/1.73 m2 (-0.71, 0.21) lower eGFR per 5 stove-use years, though the confidence intervals included the null, while greater current intensity of indoor solid fuel use was associated with 1.02 (1.00, 1.04) higher prevalent CKD per 100 stove-use days per year. Larger associations between current solid fuel use and intensity of use with lower eGFR and prevalent CKD were observed among participants in southern China, those with hypertension or diabetes (eGFR only), and females (CKD only), through these groups had small sample sizes and some confidence intervals included the null.

CONCLUSION

We found inconsistent evidence associating household solid fuel use and renal function in this cross-sectional study of peri-urban Chinese adults.

Size fraction of hazardous particulate matter governing the respiratory deposition and inhalation risk in the highly polluted city Delhi

Delhi has been identified as one of the highly polluted cities in the world and recently associated with the highest population weighted PM_2.5 concentration. However, the unavailability of the health risk estimations using long-term data for Indian cities has been pointed out as a hurdle in performing the correct assessment. The present work estimated deposition of particles in different regions of respiratory systems (head airway = 67% deposition for 2.5 µm particles; tracheo-bronchiolar (TB) = 73% deposition for 1.0 µm particles; alveolar (AL) = 17% deposition for 0.5 µm, 0.25 µm, and < 0.25 µm particles) using PM samples collected at a breathing height of 1.5 m near the major ring road in New Delhi (India). The calculated risk index (RI) varied considerably between winter (1.21 ± 0.26 to 1.33 ± 0.50) and pre-monsoon-southwest monsoon months (0.34 ± 0.08 to 0.96 ± 0.27). Respiratory deposition dose of nanosized particles (≤ 500 nm) in the alveoli region of the lung was found to be considerable (35%) indicating the need for understanding the role of these particles in posing health risk. Although the calculated values of risk metric for exposures of PM-associated metals indicated no risk to IIT Delhi population (hazard quotient < 1 and excess risk of getting cancer < 10^-6-10^-9), continuous monitoring for particles of different sizes at inhalation height are required for protecting human health.

Emission Characteristics and Formation Mechanism of Carbonyl Compounds from Residential Solid Fuel Combustion Based on Real-World Measurements and Tube-Furnace Experiments

This study updated carbonyl compound (CC) emission factors (EFs) and composition for residential solid fuel combustion based on real-world measurements of 124 fuel/stove combinations in China and explored the CC formation mechanism using tube-furnace experiments with 19 fuels and low/high temperatures to explain the impact of fuel and stove on CC emission characteristics. The average EF_CC values for straw, wood, and coal were 1.94 ± 1.57, 1.50 ± 0.88, and 0.40 ± 0.54 g/kg, respectively. Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were the most abundant species, accounting for 40-60% of CCs, followed by acetone (∼20%), aromatic aldehydes (∼10%), and unsaturated aldehydes (∼5%). Different from formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, other species showed significant variation among fuel types. All these characteristics could be explained by the difference in the volatile content and chemical structure of fuel, such as aromatic in coal versus lignin in biomass. The improvement in stove technology reduced CC emissions by 30.4-69.7% (mainly formaldehyde and acetaldehyde) among fuels but increased the proportion of aromatic aldehydes by 24.3-89.4%. Various CC species showed different formation mechanisms related to fuel property and burning temperature. The volatile matter derived from thermal pyrolysis of fuel polymers determined CC composition, while higher temperature preferentially degraded formaldehyde and acetaldehyde but promoted the formation of acetone and aromatic aldehydes. This study not only revealed emission characteristic of CCs from RSFC but also contributed to the improvement of clean combustion technology.

Characteristics, Source Contributions, and Source-Specific Health Risks of PM2.5-Bound Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons for Senior Citizens during the Heating Season in Tianjin, China

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have carcinogenic impacts on human health. However, limited studies are available on the characteristics, sources, and source-specific health risks of PM2.5-bound PAHs based on personal exposure data, and comparisons of the contributions of indoor and outdoor sources are also lacking. We recruited 101 senior citizens in the winter of 2011 for personal PM2.5 sample collection. Fourteen PAHs were analyzed, potential sources were apportioned using positive matrix factorization (PMF), and inhalational carcinogenic risks of each source were estimated. Six emission sources were identified, including coal combustion, gasoline emission, diesel emission, biomass burning, cooking, and environmental tobacco smoking (ETS). The contribution to carcinogenic risk of each source occurred in the following sequence: biomass burning > diesel emission > gasoline emission > ETS > coal combustion > cooking. Moreover, the contributions of biomass burning, diesel emission, ETS, and indoor sources (sum of cooking and ETS) to PAH-induced carcinogenic risk were higher than those to the PAH mass concentration, suggesting severe carcinogenic risk per unit contribution. This study revealed the contribution of indoor and outdoor sources to mass concentration and carcinogenic risk of PM2.5-bound PAHs, which could act as a guide to mitigate the exposure level and risk of PM2.5-bound PAHs.

Saccharides as Particulate Matter Tracers of Biomass Burning: A Review

The adverse effects of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) on health and ecosystems, as well as on meteorology and climate change, are well known to the scientific community. It is therefore undeniable that a good understanding of the sources of PM is crucial for effective control of emissions and to protect public health. One of the major contributions to atmospheric PM is biomass burning, a practice used both in agriculture and home heating, which can be traced and identified by analyzing sugars emitted from the combustion of cellulose and hemicellulose that make up biomass. In this review comparing almost 200 selected articles, we highlight the most recent studies that broaden such category of tracers, covering research publications on residential wood combustions, open-fire or combustion chamber burnings and ambient PM in different regions of Asia, America and Europe. The purpose of the present work is to collect data in the literature that indicate a direct correspondence between biomass burning and saccharides emitted into the atmosphere with regard to distinguishing common sugars attributed to biomass burning from those that have co-causes of issue. In this paper, we provide a list of 24 compounds, including those most commonly recognized as biomass burning tracers (i.e., levoglucosan, mannosan and galactosan), from which it emerges that monosaccharide anhydrides, sugar alcohols and primary sugars have been widely reported as organic tracers for biomass combustion, although it has also been shown that emissions of these compounds depend not only on combustion characteristics and equipment but also on fuel type, combustion quality and weather conditions. Although it appears that it is currently not possible to define a single compound as a universal indicator of biomass combustion, this review provides a valuable tool for the collection of information in the literature and identifies analytes that can lead to the determination of patterns for the distribution between PM generated by biomass combustion.

Associations between household air pollution and early child development among children aged 36-59 months in Bangladesh

Background

Household air pollution (HAP) from solid fuel use (SFU) for cooking may impact child health in low-resources countries. This study examined the associations between HAP and early childhood development (ECD) outcomes among children under 5 years of age in Bangladesh and explored potential effect modification by sex and urbanicity.

Methods

The study sample consisted of 9395 children aged 36–59 months in the households from the Bangladesh Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 2019. SFU and levels of exposure to SFU (unexposed, moderately exposed and highly exposed) were used as proxies of HAP exposure. We estimated the covariate-adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and 95% CIs for the associations between HAP and ECD outcomes using multilevel mixed-effects Poisson regression models with a robust variance estimator.

Results

81.4% of children were exposed to SFU, and the prevalence of developmental delay (in Early Childhood Development Index) was 25.3%. Children exposed to SFU were 1.47 times more likely to have developmental delays (95% CI: 1.25, 1.73; p<0.001) compared with children with no SFU exposure. SFU was significantly associated with developmental delay in socioemotional (aPR: 1.17; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.36; p=0.035) and learning-cognitive (aPR: 1.90; 95% CI: 1.39, 2.60; p<0.001) domains. Similarly, children moderately exposed and highly exposed to HAP had higher prevalence of developmental delays than unexposed children. We did not observe effect modification by sex or urbanicity.

Conclusion

Public health policies should promote the use of clean cooking fuels and cookstoves to reduce the high burden of HAP exposure in low-resource countries for helping younger children to meet their developmental milestones.

A review and analysis of personal and ambient PM2.5 measurements: Implications for epidemiology studies

BACKGROUND

In epidemiology studies, ambient measurements of PM_2.5 are often used as surrogates for personal exposures. However, it is unclear the degree to which ambient PM_2.5 reflects personal exposures.

OBJECTIVE

In order to examine potential sources of bias in epidemiology studies, we conducted a review and meta-analysis of studies to determine the extent to which short-term measurements of ambient PM_2.5 levels are related to short-term measurements of personal PM_2.5 levels.

METHODS

We conducted a literature search of studies reporting both personal and ambient measurements of PM_2.5 published in the last 10 years (2009-2019) and incorporated studies published prior to 2009 from reviews.

RESULTS

Seventy-one studies were identified. Based on 17 studies reporting slopes, a meta-analysis revealed an overall slope of 0.56 μg/m³ (95% CI: [0.39, 0.73]) personal PM_2.5 per μg/m³ increase in ambient PM_2.5. Slopes for summer months were higher (slope = 0.73, 95% CI: [0.64, 0.81]) than for winter (slope = 0.46, 95% CI: [0.36, 0.57]). Based on 44 studies reporting correlations, we calculated an overall personal-ambient PM_2.5 correlation of 0.63 (95% CI: [0.55, 0.71]). Correlations were stronger in studies conducted in Canada (r = 0.86, 95% CI: [0.67, 0.94]) compared to the USA (r = 0.60, 95% CI: [0.49, 0.70]) and China (r = 0.60, 95% CI: [0.46, 0.71]). Correlations also were stronger in urban areas (r = 0.53, 95% CI: [0.43, 0.62]) vs. suburban areas (r = 0.36, 95% CI: [0.21, 0.49]).

SIGNIFICANCE

Our results suggest a large degree of variability in the personal-ambient PM_2.5 association and the potential for exposure misclassification and measurement error in PM_2.5 epidemiology studies.

Household Air Pollution and Blood Pressure, Vascular Damage, and Subclinical Indicators of Cardiovascular Disease in Older Chinese Adults

BACKGROUND

Limited data suggest that household air pollution from cooking and heating with solid fuel (i.e., coal and biomass) stoves may contribute to the development of hypertension and vascular damage.

METHODS

Using mixed-effects regression models, we investigated the associations of household air pollution with blood pressure (BP) and vascular function in 753 adults (ages 40-79 years) from 3 diverse provinces in China. We conducted repeated measures of participants' household fuel use, personal exposure to fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5), BP, brachial-femoral pulse wave velocity (bfPWV), and augmentation index. Ultrasound images of the carotid arteries were obtained to assess intima-media thickness (CIMT) and plaques. Covariate information on sociodemographics, health behaviors, 24-h urinary sodium, and blood lipids was also obtained.

RESULTS

Average estimated yearly personal exposure to PM2.5 was 97.5 µg/m3 (SD: 79.2; range: 3.5-1241), and 65% of participants cooked with solid fuel. In multivariable models, current solid fuel use was associated with higher systolic (2.4 mm Hg, 95% CI: -0.4, 4.9) and diastolic BP (1.4 mm Hg, 95% CI: -0.1, 3.0) and greater total area of plaques (1.7 mm2, 95% CI: -6.5, 9.8) compared with exclusive use of electricity or gas stoves. A 1 - ln(µg/m3) increase in PM2.5 exposure was associated with higher systolic (1.5 mm Hg, 95% CI: 0.2, 2.7) and diastolic BP (1.0 mm Hg, 95% CI: 0.4, 1.7) and with greater CIMT (0.02 mm, 95% CI: 0.00, 0.04) and total area of plaques (4.7 mm2, 95% CI: -2.0, 11.5). We did not find associations with arterial stiffness, except for a lower bfPWV (-1.5 m/s, 95% CI: -3.0, -0.0) among users of solid fuel heaters.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings add to limited evidence that household air pollution is associated with higher BP and with greater CIMT and total plaque area.

Associations between long term exposures to outdoor air pollution and indoor solid fuel use and depression in China

Depression is one of the most common mental disorders. Effects of air pollution from outdoor and indoor on depression were inconsistent. We assessed 30,139 participants from Northeast China to explore the associations between long term exposures of outdoor and indoor solid fuel use and depressive symptoms. Multiple logistic regressions models as well as multiplicative interaction and additive interaction analysis were used. Outdoor exposures to air pollutants of particulate matter (with an aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm, [PM_2.5], odds ratio [OR] = 1.98 per standard deviation [SD], 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.78, 2.19; with an aerodynamic diameter <10 μm, [PM₁₀], OR = 1.83, 95% CI:1.68, 2.00), sulfur dioxide (SO₂, OR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.33, 1.52), and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂, OR = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.49, 1.76) were significantly associated with higher occurrence of depressive symptoms. A significant linear trend for increased occurrence of depressive symptoms was observed in participants using both solid fuels for cooking and heating (P = 0.04). Indoor air pollution exposures from solid fuel use for heating (OR = 1.16, 95%CI: 1.00, 1.35) and high cooking frequency (OR = 1.17, 95%CI: 1.00, 1.37) were significantly associated with increased occurrence of depressive symptoms. We observed significant interactions of indoor solid fuel use and outdoor air pollution exposures on depressive symptoms (indoor fuel use for cooking and SO₂, P value = 0.04; solid fuel use for heating and NO₂, P value = 0.02). Solid fuel use for cooking weakened the associations between SO₂(relative excess risk due to interaction [RERI] = -1.37, 95% CI: -1.88, -0.86) and depressive symptoms. Solid fuel use for heating weakened the associations between NO₂ (RERI = -1.91, 95% CI: -2.55, -1.27) and depressive symptoms. Compared with individual associations, antagonistic interactions of outdoor air pollution and indoor solid fuel use on depressive symptoms might exist. Our findings contribute to better understandings for the associations between air pollution and depressive symptoms, which might be useful for developing effective strategies for depression prevention and air pollution control.

Personal exposure to PM2.5 of indoor and outdoor origin in two neighboring Chinese communities with contrasting household fuel use patterns

The Chinese government is replacing high-polluting, household coal heating stoves with electricity- and natural gas-powered heaters to improve ambient air quality. The evaluation of the intervention impact on outdoor PM_2.5 and personal exposure in community level are in their initial stages. We compared outdoor air pollution and personal exposure in two neighboring communities (~2 km) in northern China with contrasting household fuel use patterns: one where residents primarily used coal for cooking and heating ("coal village") and one where natural gas was the dominant fuel ("gas village"). We collected 24-h outdoor gravimetric PM_2.5 samples in each village and concurrently measured 48-h integrated exposures among 71 participants from 41 and 30 households in the coal and gas villages, respectively. PM_2.5 samples were analyzed for mass and chemical composition. Daily outdoor PM_2.5 concentrations in the coal village (mean ± standard deviation: 109 ± 41 μg/m³) were, on average, 1.3 ± 0.2 times higher than in the gas village (88 ± 38 μg/m³). However, personal PM_2.5 exposures were lower in the coal village (116 ± 121 μg/m³ versus 156 ± 106 μg/m³). PM_2.5 species that can serve as tracers for residential coal combustion (e.g., S, Se, Zn, Pb, etc.) and dust (Al, Ca, Mg, Fe, Si and Ti) were higher in the coal village, and the proportion of personal PM_2.5 of outdoor origin in the coal village was nearly 2 times higher than the gas village. Our results suggest that ambient PM_2.5 and its chemical composition can vary at relatively small spatial scales and may reflect community-level differences in the household energy use. However, personal PM_2.5 exposures may not mirror between-village differences in outdoor air pollution if only PM_2.5 mass is evaluated. Individual chemical composition of PM_2.5 exposure can provide important insight in future studies on the effectiveness of source-targeted air quality interventions.

Chemical Investigation of Household Solid Fuel Use and Outdoor Air Pollution Contributions to Personal PM2.5 Exposures

In communities with household solid fuel use, transitioning to clean stoves/fuels often results in only moderate reductions in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposures; the chemical composition of those exposures may help explain why. We collected personal exposure (men and women) and outdoor PM2.5 samples in villages in three Chinese provinces (Shanxi, Beijing, and Guangxi) and measured chemical components, including water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), ions, elements, and organic tracers. Source contributions from chemical mass balance modeling (biomass burning, coal combustion, vehicles, dust, and secondary inorganic aerosol) were similar between outdoor and personal PM2.5 samples. Principal component analysis of organic and inorganic components identified analogous sources, including a regional ambient source. Chemical components of PM2.5 exposures did not differ significantly by gender. Participants using coal had higher personal/outdoor (P/O) ratios of coal combustion tracers (picene, sulfate, As, and Pb) than those not using coal, but no such trend was observed for biomass burning tracers (levoglucosan, K+, WSOC). Picene and most levoglucosan P/O ratios exceeded 1 even among participants not using coal and biomass, respectively, indicating substantial indirect exposure to solid fuel emissions from other homes. Contributions of community-level emissions to exposures suggest that meaningful exposure reductions will likely require extensive fuel use changes within communities.

Short-term effects of real-time individual fine particulate matter exposure on lung function: a panel study in Zhuhai, China

Fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) is still the primary air pollutant in most Chinese cities and its adverse effects on lung function have been widely reported. However, short-term effects of individual exposure to PM_2.5 on pulmonary expiration flow indices remain largely unknown. In this study, we examined the short-term effects of real-time individual exposure to PM_2.5 on lung function in a panel of 115 healthy adults. We measured individual real-time PM_2.5 exposure and lung function. Environmental PM_2.5 concentrations in the same period were collected from the nearest monitoring station. Generalized linear model was used to assess the effects of individual PM_2.5 exposure on lung function after adjusting for potential confounders. Individual PM_2.5 exposure ranged from 18.5 to 42.4 μg/m³ with fluctuations over time and ambient PM_2.5 concentrations presented a moderate trend of fluctuation at the same day. Except forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV₁) decline related to 2-h moving average PM_2.5 exposure, no significant associations between individual PM_2.5 exposure and other volume indices including forced vital capacity (FVC) and FEV₁/FVC ratio were observed. The adverse effects of individual PM_2.5 exposure on pulmonary expiration flow indices including peak expiratory flow (PEF), maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMF) and forced expiratory flow at 50%, and 75% of vital capacity (FEF_50% and FEF_75%) were observed to be strongest at 2 moving average hours and could last for 24 h. Stratified analysis showed greater and longer effects among participants who were aged over 40 years, males, or smokers. These findings suggested that individual PM_2.5 exposure was significantly associated with altered lung function, especially with pulmonary expiration flow indices decline, which was strongest at 2 moving average hours and could last for 24 h.

Energy poverty influences urban outdoor air pollution levels during COVID-19 lockdown in south-central Chile

The effect of COVID-19 lockdowns on ambient air pollution levels in urban south-central Chile, where outdoor air pollution primarily originates indoors from wood burning for heating, may differ from trends in cities where transportation and industrial emission sources dominate. This quasi-experimental study compared hourly fine (PM_2.5) and coarse (PM₁₀) particulate matter measurements from six air monitors (three beta attenuation monitors; three low-cost sensors) in commercial and low/middle-income residential areas of Temuco, Chile between 2019 and 2020. The potential impact of varying annual meterological conditions on air quality was also assessed. During COVID-19 lockdown, average monthly ambient PM_2.5 concentrations in a commercial and middle-income residential neighborhood of Temuco were up to 50% higher (from 12 to 18 μg/m³) and 59% higher (from 22 to 35 μg/m³) than 2019 levels, respectively. Conversely, PM_2.5 levels decreased by up to 52% (from 43 to 21 μg/m³) in low-income areas. The fine fraction of PM₁₀ in April 2020 was 48% higher than in April 2017-2019 (from 50% to 74%) in a commercial area. These changes did not appear to result from meterological differences between years. During COVID-19 lockdown, higher outdoor PM_2.5 pollution from wood heating existed in more affluent areas of Temuco, while PM_2.5 concentrations declined among poorer households refraining from wood heating. To reduce air pollution and energy poverty in south-central Chile, affordability of clean heating fuels (e.g. electricity) should be a policy priority.

Contributions of internal emissions to peaks and incremental indoor PM2.5 in rural coal use households

Indoor air quality is critically important to the human as people spend most time indoors. Indoor PM_2.5 is related to the outdoor levels, but more directly influenced by internal sources. Severe household air pollution from solid fuel use has been recognized as one major risk for human health especailly in rural area, however, the issue is significantly overlooked in most national air quality controls and intervention policies. Here, by using low-cost sensors, indoor PM_2.5 in rural homes burning coals was monitored for ~4 months and analyzed for its temporal dynamics, distributions, relationship with outdoor PM_2.5, and quantitative contributions of internal sources. A bimodal distribution of indoor PM_2.5 was identified and the bimodal characteristic was more significant at the finer time resolution. The bimodal distribution maxima were corresponding to the emissions from strong internal sources and the influence of outdoor PM_2.5, respectively. Indoor PM_2.5 was found to be correlated with the outdoor PM_2.5, even though indoor coal combustion for heating was thought to be predominant source of indoor PM_2.5. The indoor-outdoor relationship differed significantly between the heating and non-heating seasons. Impacts of typical indoor sources like cooking, heating associated with coal use, and smoking were quantitatively analyzed based on the highly time-resolved PM_2.5. Estimated contribution of outdoor PM_2.5 to the indoor PM_2.5 was ~48% during the non-heating period, but decreased to about 32% during the heating period. The contribution of indoor heating burning coals comprised up to 47% of the indoor PM_2.5 during the heating period, while the other indoor sources contributed to ~20%. The study, based on a relatively long-term timely resolved PM_2.5 data from a large number of rural households, provided informative results on temporal dynamics of indoor PM_2.5 and quantitative contributions of internal sources, promoting scientific understanding on sources and impacts of household air pollution.

On the Water-Soluble Organic Matter in Inhalable Air Particles: Why Should Outdoor Experience Motivate Indoor Studies?

The current understanding of water-soluble organic aerosol (OA) composition, sources, transformations, and effects is still limited to outdoor scenarios. However, the OA is also an important component of particulate matter indoors, whose complexity impairs a full structural and molecular identification. The current limited knowledge on indoor OA, and particularly on its water-soluble organic matter (WSOM) fraction is the basis of this feature paper. Inspired by studies on outdoor OA, this paper discusses and prioritizes issues related to indoor water-soluble OA and their effects on human health, providing a basis for future research in the field. The following three main topics are addressed: (1) what is known about the origin, mass contribution, and health effects of WSOM in outdoor air particles; (2) the current state-of-the-art on the WSOM in indoor air particles, the main challenges and opportunities for its chemical characterization and cytotoxicity evaluation; and (3) why the aerosol WSOM should be considered in future indoor air quality studies. While challenging, studies on the WSOM fraction in air particles are highly necessary to fully understand its origin, fate, toxicity, and long-term risks indoors.

Cytotoxicity and chemical composition of women's personal PM2.5 exposures from rural China

Personal exposure PM samples aid in determining the sources and chemical composition of real-world exposures, particularly in settings with household air pollution. However, their use in toxicological research is limited, despite uncertainty regarding health effects in these settings and evidence of differential toxicity among PM_2.5 sources and components. This study used women's PM_2.5 exposure samples collected using personal exposure monitoring in rural villages in three Chinese provinces (Beijing, Shanxi, and Sichuan) during summer and winter. Water-soluble organic carbon, ions, elements, and organic tracers (e.g. levoglucosan and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs]) were quantified in water and organic PM_2.5 extracts. Human lung epithelial cells (A549) were exposed to the extracts. Cell death, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and gene expression were measured. Biomass burning contributions were higher in Sichuan samples than in Beijing or Shanxi. Some PM characteristics (total PAHs and coal combustion source contributions) and biological effects of organic extract exposures (cell death, ROS, and cytokine gene expression) shared a common trend of higher levels and effects in winter than in summer for Shanxi and Beijing but no seasonal differences in Sichuan. Modulation of phase I/AhR-related genes (cyp1a1 and cyp1b1) and phase II/oxidative stress-related genes (HO-1, SOD1/2, NQO-1, and catalase) was either low or insignificant, without clear trends between samples. No significant cell death or ROS production was observed for water extract treatments among all sites and seasons, even at possible higher concentrations tested. These results support organic components, particularly PAHs, as essential drivers of biological effects, which is consistent with some other evidence from ambient PM_2.5.

Direct measurement with personal samplers captures the chemical complexity of PM_2.5 exposures better than fixed monitors. To investigate biological effects, lung cells were exposed to extracts of exposure PM_2.5 samples.

Characterization and exposure assessment of household fine particulate matter pollution in China

Household fine particulate matter (PM_2.5 ) pollution greatly impacts residents' health. To explore the current national situation of household PM_2.5 pollution in China, a study was conducted based on literature published from 1998 to 2018. After extracting data from the literature in conformity with the requirements, the nationwide household-weighted mean concentration of household PM_2.5 (HPL) was calculated. Subgroup analyses of spatial, geographic, and temporal differences were also done. The estimated overall HPL in China was 132.2 ± 117.7 μg/m³ . HPL in the rural area (164.3 ± 104.5 μg/m³ ) was higher than that in the urban area (123.9 ± 122.3 μg/m³ ). For HPLs of indoor sampling sites, the kitchen was the highest, followed by the bedroom and living room. There were significant differences of geographic distributions. The HPLs in the South were higher than the North in four seasons. The inhaled dose of household PM_2.5 among school-age children differed from provinces with the highest dose up to 5.9 μg/(kg·d). Countermeasures should be carried out to reduce indoor pollution and safeguard health urgently.

Association between household air pollution and child mortality in Myanmar using a multilevel mixed-effects Poisson regression with robust variance

Household air pollution (HAP) from solid fuel use (SFU) for cooking is a major public health threat for women and children in low and middle-income countries. This study investigated the associations between HAP and neonatal, infant, and under-five child mortality in Myanmar. The study consisted of 3249 sample of under-five children in the households from the first Myanmar Demographic and Health Survey 2016. Fuel types and levels of exposure to SFU (no, moderate and high) were proxies for HAP. We estimated covariate-adjusted relative risks (aRR) of neonatal, infant, and under-five child mortality with 95% confidence intervals, accounting for the survey design. The prevalence of SFU was 79.0%. The neonatal, infant, and under-five child mortality rates were 26, 45, and 49 per 1000 live births, respectively. The risks of infant (aRR 2.02; 95% CI 1.01-4.05; p-value = 0.048) and under-five mortality (aRR 2.16; 95% CI 1.07-4.36; p-value = 0.031), but not neonatal mortality, were higher among children from households with SFU compared to children from households using clean fuel. Likewise, children highly exposed to HAP had higher risks of mortality than unexposed children. HAP increases the risks of infant and under-five child mortality in Myanmar, which could be reduced by increasing access to clean cookstoves and fuels.

Short-term differences in cardiac function following controlled exposure to cookstove air pollution: The subclinical tests on volunteers exposed to smoke (STOVES) study

BACKGROUND

Exposure to household air pollution from solid fuel combustion for cooking and heating is an important risk factor for premature death and disability worldwide. Current evidence supports an association of ambient air pollution with cardiovascular disease but is limited for household air pollution and for cardiac function. Controlled exposure studies can complement evidence provided by field studies.

OBJECTIVES

To investigate effects of short-term, controlled exposures to emissions from five cookstoves on measures of cardiac function.

METHODS

Forty-eight healthy adults (46% female; 20-36 years) participated in six, 2-h exposures ('treatments'), including emissions from five cookstoves and a filtered-air control. Target fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure-concentrations per treatment were: control, 0 µg/m3; liquefied petroleum gas, 10 µg/m3; gasifier, 35 µg/m3; fan rocket, 100 µg/m3; rocket elbow, 250 µg/m3; and three stone fire, 500 µg/m3. Participants were treated in a set (pre-randomized) sequence as groups of 4 to minimize order bias and time-varying confounders. Heart rate variability (HRV) and cardiac repolarization metrics were calculated as 5-min means immediately and at 3 h following treatment, for analysis in linear mixed-effects models comparing cookstove to control.

RESULTS

Short-term differences in SDNN (standard deviation of duration of all NN intervals) and VLF (very-low frequency power) existed for several cookstoves compared to control. While all cookstoves compared to control followed a similar trend for SDNN, the greatest effect was seen immediately following three stone fire (β = -0.13 ms {%}; 95% confidence interval = -0.22, -0.03%), which reversed in direction at 3 h (0.03%; -0.06, 0.13%). VLF results were similar in direction and timing to SDNN; however, other HRV or cardiac repolarization results were not similar to those for SDNN.

DISCUSSION

We observed some evidence of short-term, effects on HRV immediately following cookstove treatments compared to control. Our results suggest that cookstoves with lower PM2.5 emissions are potentially capable of affecting cardiac function, similar to stoves emitting higher PM2.5 emissions.

Spatial distribution of fine and coarse particulate matter during a southwest monsoon in Peninsular Malaysia

This study aimed to determine the spatial distribution of PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ collected in four regions (North, Central, South and East Coast) of Peninsular Malaysia during the southwest monsoon. Concurrent measurements of PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ were performed using a high volume sampler (HVS) for 24 h (August to September 2018) collecting a total of 104 samples. All samples were then analysed for water soluble inorganic ions (WSII) using ion chromatography, trace metals using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The results showed that the highest average PM_2.5 concentration during the sampling campaign was in the North region (33.2 ± 5.3 μg m^-3) while for PM₁₀ the highest was in the Central region (38.6 ± 7.70 μg m^-3). WSII recorded contributions of 22% for PM_2.5 and 20% for PM₁₀ mass, with SO₄^2- the most abundant species with average concentrations of 1.83 ± 0.42 μg m^-3 (PM_2.5) and 2.19 ± 0.27 μg m^-3 (PM₁₀). Using a Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model, soil fertilizer (23%) was identified as the major source of PM_2.5 while industrial activity (25%) was identified as the major source of PM₁₀. Overall, the studied metals had hazard quotients (HQ) value of <1 indicating a very low risk of non-carcinogenic elements while the highest excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) was recorded for Cr VI in the South region with values of 8.4E-06 (PM_2.5) and 6.6E-05 (PM₁₀). The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) calculated from the PAH concentrations was within the acceptable range for all regions.

Determinants of personal exposure to fine particulate matter in the retired adults - Results of a panel study in two megacities, China

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between outdoor, indoor, and personal PM_2.5 exposure in the retired adults and explore the effects of potential determinants in two Chinese megacities. A longitudinal panel study was conducted in Nanjing (NJ) and Beijing (BJ), China, and thirty-three retired non-smoking adults aged 43-86 years were recruited in each city. Repeated measurements of outdoor-indoor-personal PM_2.5 concentrations were measured for five consecutive 24-h periods during both heating and non-heating seasons using real-time and gravimetric methods. Time-activity and household characteristics were recorded. Mixed-effects models were applied to analyze the determinants of personal PM_2.5 exposure. In total, 558 complete sets of collocated 24-h outdoor-indoor-personal PM_2.5 concentrations were collected. The median 24-h personal PM_2.5 exposure concentrations ranged from 43 to 79 μg/m³ across cities and seasons, which were significantly greater than their corresponding indoor levels (ranging from 36 to 68 μg/m³, p < 0.001), but significantly lower than outdoor levels (ranging from 43 to 95 μg/m³, p < 0.001). Indoor and outdoor PM_2.5 concentrations were the strongest determinants of personal exposures in both cities and seasons, with R_M² ranging from 0.814 to 0.915 for indoor and from 0.698 to 0.844 for outdoor PM_2.5 concentrations, respectively. The personal-outdoor regression slopes varied widely among seasons, with a pronounced effect in BJ (NHS: 0.618 ± 0.042; HS: 0.834 ± 0.023). Ventilation status, indoor PM_2.5 sources, personal characteristics, and meteorological factors, were also found to influence personal exposure levels. The city and season-specific models developed here are able to account for 89%-93% of the variance in personal PM_2.5 exposure. A LOOCV analysis showed an R² (RMSE) of 0.80-0.90 (0.21-0.36), while a 10-fold CV analysis demonstrated a R² (RMSE) of 0.83-0.90 (0.20-0.35). By incorporating potentially significant determinants of personal exposure, this modeling approach can improve the accuracy of personal PM_2.5 exposure assessment in epidemiologic studies.

Application of an advanced spatiotemporal model for PM2.5 prediction in Jiangsu Province, China

Either long- or short-term of fine particle (PM_2.5) exposure is associated with adverse health effects especially for children. Primary school students spend much time in schools whereas PM_2.5 prediction for such fine-scale places remains a demanding task, let alone a combined prediction with high temporal resolution. The study aimed to estimate PM_2.5 levels of different time scales for primary schools in Jiangsu Province, China. Hourly PM_2.5 measurements within the academic year (Sept. 2016-June 2017) were collected from 72 routine monitoring sites. Together with PM_2.5 emission inventory and dozens of geographic variables, an advanced spatiotemporal land use regression (LUR) model was employed to estimate PM_2.5 concentrations of biweekly, seasonal and academic year levels in Jiangsu Province at 2457 primary school locations. 10-fold cross-validation verified high prediction ability with squared correlations R_CV² of 0.72 for temporal and 0.71 for spatial changes. PM_2.5 levels in primary schools in Nanjing and Nantong were >10% higher than that of the corresponding cities while pollution levels in primary schools in Xuzhou were >20% lower. For 10 out of the 13 cities in Jiangsu, PM_2.5 levels for primary schools surpassed 70 μg/m³ in winter. Schools in Lianyungang, Zhenjiang and Huai'an suffered the most. This study demonstrated the fine-scale prediction ability of the novel spatiotemporal LUR model, as well as the potential and necessity to apply it in epidemiological studies. It also verified the emergency of pollution control for primary schools from cities such as Lianyungang and Zhenjiang.

Decoupling PM2.5 emissions and economic growth in China over 1998-2016: A regional investment perspective

It is crucial to decouple economic growth from environmental pollution in China. This study aims to evaluate China's decoupling level between PM_2.5 emissions and economic growth from a regional investment perspective. Using the panel data of 30 Chinese provinces for the period of 1998-2016, this study combines decomposition analysis with decoupling analysis to identify the roles of conventional factors and three novel investment factors in the mitigation and decoupling of PM_2.5 emissions in China and its four sub-regions. The results show that China's PM_2.5 emissions were weakly decoupled to economic growth during the period of 1998-2016, as well as in China's four sub-regions. At the national level, investment scale played the dominant role while investment structure had a marginal effect in mitigating the decoupling level. In contrast, emission intensity was the largest driver in promoting the decoupling effect. At the regional level, emission intensity and investment efficiency accelerated the regional decoupling level, but the coupling effect from investment scale in the western region far exceeded those in other three sub-regions. At the provincial level, the investment structure of Inner Mongolia and investment scales of Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia had the greatest impacts on PM_2.5 emission growth. Finally, several policy recommendations are raised for China to mitigate its PM_2.5 emissions.

Workflow for Comparison of Chemical and Biological Metrics of Filter Collected PM2.5

There is limited understanding of adverse health effect associations with chemical constituents of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) as well as the underlying mechanisms. We outlined a workflow to assess metrics, beyond concentration, using household and personal PM2.5 filter samples collected in India as a proof of concept for future large-scale studies. Oxidative potential, chemical composition (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and elements), and bioactivity (developmental exposures in zebrafish) were determined. Significant differences were observed in all metrics between personal and household PM2.5 samples. This work established methods to characterize multiple metrics of PM2.5 to ultimately support the identification of more health-relevant metrics than concentration.

Impacts of stove/fuel use and outdoor air pollution on chemical composition of household particulate matter

Biomass combustion for cooking and heating releases particulate matter (PM_2.5 ) that contributes to household air pollution. Fuel and stove types affect the chemical composition of household PM, as does infiltration of outdoor PM. Characterization of these impacts can inform future exposure assessments and epidemiologic studies, but is currently limited. In this study, we measured chemical components of PM_2.5 (water-soluble organic matter [WSOM], ions, black carbon, elements, organic tracers) in rural Chinese households using traditional biomass stoves, semi-gasifier stoves with pelletized biomass, and/or non-biomass stoves. We distinguished households using one stove type (traditional, semi-gasifier, or LPG/electric) from those using multiple stoves/fuels. WSOM concentrations were higher in households using only semi-gasifier or traditional stoves (31%-33%) than in those with exclusive LPG/electric stove (13%) or mixed stove use (12%-22%). Inorganic ions comprised 14% of PM in exclusive LPG/electric households, compared to 1%-5% of PM in households using biomass. Total PAH content was much higher in households that used traditional stoves (0.8-2.8 mg/g PM) compared to those that did not (0.1-0.3 mg/g PM). Source apportionment revealed that biomass burning comprised 27%-84% of PM_2.5 in households using biomass. In all samples, identified outdoor sources (vehicles, dust, coal combustion, secondary aerosol) contributed 10%-20% of household PM_2.5 .

Carbonaceous Aerosol Emitted from Biofuel Household Stove Combustion in South China

Near-source measurements of smoke emissions from household stove combustion in a rural area of South China were conducted with 7 typical biomass fuels. Particulate matter samples (both PM10 and PM2.5) were analyzed for their carbonaceous components, including organic and elemental carbon (OC, EC) as well as levoglucosan (molecular tracer of biomass burning), employing thermal-optical and GC-MS analysis. The OC and EC content in PM2.5 and PM10 smoke particles derived from the various types of vegetation showed different patterns with the smallest values observed for straw type fuels. The OC/EC ratios in PM2.5 and PM10 showed an order of straw > hardwood > bamboo > softwood. Mass concentrations of particulate matter emitted from rice straw burning were highest with 12.23 ± 0.87 mg/m3 (PM10) and 9.31 ± 0.81 mg/m3 (PM2.5), while the mass ratios (LG/PM and OC/PM) were lowest among the 7 fuels, indicating that particle emissions from straw burning were higher than those from woody fuels, using similar burning conditions. The levoglucosan emission ratios were rather high and this single most abundant organic species was mainly present in the fine particle mode. Linear correlation analysis showed a strong relationship between levoglucosan and EC emissions.

Approaches for identifying PM2.5 source types and source areas at a remote background site of South China in spring

The receptor model is an effectively and widely used tool for analyzing the source of PM_2.5, and its development and improvement have always been focused and challenged. In this study, approaches of source analysis is applied and compared. The PM_2.5 samples were collected in spring of 2015 at a remote background site of Weizhou, South China and were analyzed for water-soluble ions, trace metals, and sugars. The 28 measurement species were introduced into the positive matrix factorization (PMF) and a non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) model for inter-comparison of PM_2.5 prediction. Results showed that the NMF model is a more robust tool to identify source types and source apportionment in the case of a small sample size (n = 31). In NMF, four source variants were obtained as dust (15.6%), biomass combustion (11.8%), secondary formation (17.6%), and coal combustion (54.9%), corresponding to four main source areas. These were Southeast Asia, South China Sea, Taiwan Strait, as well as Pearl River Delta, respectively. The areas were distinguished based on hybrid receptor models, potential source contribution function (PSCF) and concentration weighted trajectory (CWT), by introducing the daily loadings of each source factor from NMF method. These model results were highly consistent with categorized chemical characteristics of PM_2.5, suggesting that NMF linking with hybrid receptor models provides valuable implications for exploring source types and source areas of PM_2.5. Meanwhile, biomass combustion and coal combustion comparably contributed to the high PM_2.5 concentrations indicating control strategy in South China in spring.

Effectiveness of a Household Energy Package in Improving Indoor Air Quality and Reducing Personal Exposures in Rural China

We evaluated whether an energy package comprising a low-polluting semigasifier cookstove with chimney, water heater, and pelletized biomass fuel would improve air pollution in China. We measured the stove use, 48-h air pollution exposures (PM_2.5, black carbon), and kitchen concentrations (PM_2.5, black carbon, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides) for 205 women, along with ambient PM_2.5. Over half (n = 125) were offered the energy package after baseline assessment, forming "treated" and "untreated" groups, and we repeated the measurements up to 3 occasions over 18-months. Kitchen carbon monoxide did not change, and nitrogen oxides increased in summer but decreased in winter for both groups. Summer geometric mean exposures and kitchen concentrations of PM_2.5 and black carbon decreased by 24-67% in women who received the energy package, but greater reductions (48-70%) were observed in untreated homes, likely due to increased use of gas stoves. After adjusting for differences in outdoor PM_2.5, receiving the energy package was associated with decreased winter exposures to PM_2.5 (-46%; 95% CI: -70, -2) and black carbon (-55%; -74, -25) and the summer increases were smaller (PM_2.5: 8%; -22, 51 and black carbon: 37%; -12, 113). However, PM_2.5 exposures remained 1.5-3 times higher than those of health-based international air pollution targets.

Exposure–Response Associations of Household Air Pollution and Buccal Cell Telomere Length in Women Using Biomass Stoves

BACKGROUND

Telomere shortening is associated with early mortality and chronic disease. Recent studies indicate that environmental exposures, including urban and traffic-related air pollution, may shorten telomeres. Associations between exposure to household air pollution from solid fuel stoves and telomere length have not been evaluated.

METHODS

Among 137 rural Chinese women using biomass stoves ([Formula: see text] of age), we measured 48-h personal exposures to fine particulate matter [PM [Formula: see text] in aerodynamic diameter ([Formula: see text])] and black carbon and collected oral DNA on up to three occasions over a period of 2.5 y. Relative telomere length (RTL) was quantified using a modified real-time polymerase chain reaction protocol. Mixed effects regression models were used to investigate the exposure–response associations between household air pollution and RTL, adjusting for key sociodemographic, behavioral, and environmental covariates.

RESULTS

Women's daily exposures to air pollution ranged from [Formula: see text] for [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) and [Formula: see text] for black carbon ([Formula: see text]). Natural cubic spline models indicated a mostly linear association between increased exposure to air pollution and shorter RTL, except at very high concentrations where there were few observations. We thus modeled the linear associations with all observations, excluding the highest 3% and 5% of exposures. In covariate-adjusted models, an interquartile range (IQR) increase in exposure to black carbon ([Formula: see text]) was associated with shorter RTL [all observations: [Formula: see text] (95% CI: [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]); excluding highest 5% exposures: [Formula: see text] (95% CI: [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text])]. Further adjustment for outdoor temperature brought the estimates closer to zero [all observations: [Formula: see text] (95% CI: [Formula: see text], 0.06); excluding highest 5% exposures: [Formula: see text] (95% CI: [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text])]. Models with [Formula: see text] as the exposure metric followed a similar pattern.

CONCLUSION

Telomere shortening, which is a biomarker of biological aging and chronic disease, may be associated with exposure to air pollution in settings where household biomass stoves are commonly used. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP4041.

Spatio⁻Temporal Relationship and Evolvement of Socioeconomic Factors and PM2.5 in China During 1998⁻2016

A comprehensive understanding of the relationships between PM2.5 concentration and socioeconomic factors provides new insight into environmental management decision-making for sustainable development. In order to identify the contributions of socioeconomic development to PM2.5, their spatial interaction and temporal variation of long time series are analyzed in this paper. Unary linear regression method, Spearman's rank and bivariate Moran's I methods were used to investigate spatio⁻temporal variations and relationships of socioeconomic factors and PM2.5 concentration in 31 provinces of China during the period of 1998⁻2016. Spatial spillover effect of PM2.5 concentration and the impact of socioeconomic factors on PM2.5 concentration were analyzed by spatial lag model. Results demonstrated that PM2.5 concentration in most provinces of China increased rapidly along with the increase of socioeconomic factors, while PM2.5 presented a slow growth trend in Southwest China and a descending trend in Northwest China along with the increase of socioeconomic factors. Long time series analysis revealed the relationships between PM2.5 concentration and four socioeconomic factors. PM2.5 concentration was significantly positive spatial correlated with GDP per capita, industrial added value and private car ownership, while urban population density appeared a negative spatial correlation since 2006. GDP per capita and industrial added values were the most important factors to increase PM2.5, followed by private car ownership and urban population density. The findings of the study revealed spatial spillover effects of PM2.5 between different provinces, and can provide a theoretical basis for sustainable development and environmental protection.

The Oxidative Potential of Personal and Household PM2.5 in a Rural Setting in Southwestern China

The chemical constituents of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) vary by source and capacity to participate in redox reactions in the body, which produce cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS). Knowledge of the sources and components of PM_2.5 may provide insight into the adverse health effects associated with the inhalation of PM_2.5 mass. We collected 48 h household and personal PM_2.5 exposure measurements in the summer months among 50 women/household pairs in a rural area of southwestern China where daily household biomass burning is common. PM_2.5 mass was analyzed for ions, trace metals, black carbon, and water-soluble organic matter, as well as ROS-generating capability (oxidative potential) by one cellular and one acellular assay. Crustal enrichment factors and a principal component analysis identified the major sources of PM_2.5 as dust, biomass burning, and secondary sulfate. Elements associated with the secondary sulfate source (As, Mo, Zn) had the strongest correlation with increased cellular oxidative potential (Spearman r: 0.74, 0.68, and 0.64). Chemical markers of biomass burning (water-soluble potassium and water-soluble organic matter) had negligible oxidative potential, suggesting that these assays may not be useful as health-relevant exposure metrics in populations that are exposed to high levels of smoke from household biomass burning.

Measuring personal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) among rural Honduran women: A field evaluation of the Ultrasonic Personal Aerosol Sampler (UPAS)

We measured 24-hour average personal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) among rural Honduran women using a lightweight, gravimetric monitor - the Ultrasonic Personal Aerosol Sampler (UPAS). Performance of the UPAS was compared with a commonly used gravimetric pump, cyclone, and filter sampling system. We observed strong agreement and correlation (Spearman ρ = 0.91; PM_2.5 concentration range: 19-120 μg/m³) between 43 paired measures, supporting the use of the UPAS as a personal exposure monitor for household air pollution studies.
