Microplastic contamination in the agri-food chain: The case of honeybees and beehive products

Microplastics, MPs, plastic fragments with a dimension lower than 5 mm, and microfibers, MFs, synthetic and natural/artificial fibrous fragments with a diameter lower than 50 μm, are ubiquitous pollutants identified in different environmental compartments. In this work the occurrence of MPs and MFs on honeybees, Apis mellifera, and beehive products was evaluated, using Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy, confirming that MPs and MFs are widely present as air contaminants in all the apiary's areas (high and low urbanized areas) in Southern Italy. Results indicated that independently from the site, both honeybees and honey samples, are contaminated by MFs with non-natural color. The majority of MFs were of natural origin followed by artificial MFs and synthetic MFs. Moreover, the chemical composition of MFs isolated from honeybees reflect that used in synthetic fabrics, leading to the hypothesis that they are released from textile to air where are captured by bees. Results highlight that MFs represent a class of ubiquitous airborne anthropogenic pollutants. The identification of polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE, MPs in honeybees confirm the recent findings that PTFE MPs are diffuse soil and air contaminants while the identification of polyethylene, PE, based MPs in honey samples, from low density urban sites, could be correlated to the large use of PE in agriculture. In the honey samples, also polycaprolactone, PCL, MPs were identified, mainly in high density urban sites, confirming that biodegradable materials could be further pollutants in the environments. The results indicate that honeybees are contaminated by MPs and MFs during their flights or picking up from the hive components, flowers, from other nest mates, from the clothes of the beekeeper, among others and some of them could be transferred to honey samples that could be also affected by soil contamination.

Experimental study of interception effect by submerged dam on microplastics

Submerged dam can alter microplastic (MP) transport, and act as a sink for MPs. In this paper, we investigated the interception rates of Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and Polystyrene (PS) by an artificial submerged dam in a flow flume at first, and found that most of the un-intercepted PVC and PS particles by the dam accumulated behind it under the subcritical (Fr < 1) and turbulent (Re > 500) flows. PVC particles behind the dam mainly concentrated within two dam widths, and the concentration of PS particles decreased with the distance behind the dam lengthening. Then, we performed linear regression fitting and Redundancy Analysis (RDA) between the interception rates collected in 162 experiment tests and environmental factors, including flow velocity, distance to dam and MP concentration. The results showed that the interception rate of PVC and PS particles increased with the distance to dam lengthening, but decreased with the flow velocity and MP concentration heightening. RDA revealed that the interception rate was influenced by flow velocity, distance to dam, and MP concentration from the most to the least. Our findings are believed to contribute to understanding the mechanism of the interception effect of submerged dam on microplastics.

Microplastics monitoring in freshwater systems: A review of global efforts, knowledge gaps, and research priorities

The escalating production of synthetic plastics and inadequate waste management have led to pervasive microplastic (MP) contamination in aquatic ecosystems. MPs, typically defined as particles smaller than 5 mm, have become an emerging pollutant in freshwater environments. While significant concern about MPs has risen since 2014, research has predominantly concentrated on marine settings, there is an urgent need for a more in-depth critical review to systematically summarize the current global efforts, knowledge gaps, and research priorities for MP monitoring in freshwater systems. This review evaluates the current understanding of MP monitoring in freshwater environments by examining the distribution, characteristics, and sources of MPs, alongside the progression of analytical methods with quantitative evidence. Our findings suggest that MPs are widely distributed in global freshwater systems, with higher abundances found in areas with intense human economic activities, such as the United States, Europe, and China. MP abundance distributions vary across different water bodies (e.g., rivers, lakes, estuaries, and wetlands), with sampling methods and size range selections significantly influencing reported MP abundances. Despite great global efforts, there is still a lack of harmonized analyzing framework and understanding of MP pollution in specific regions and facilities. Future research should prioritize the development of standardized analysis protocols and open-source MP datasets to facilitate data comparison. Additionally, exploring the potential of state-of-the-art artificial intelligence for rapid, accurate, and large-scale modeling and characterization of MPs is crucial to inform effective strategies for managing MP pollution in freshwater ecosystems.

Microplastics and their interaction with microorganisms in Bosten Lake sediment

Microplastics (MPs), discovered in oceans, lakes, and rivers, can infiltrate the food chain through ingestion by organisms, potentially posing health risks. Our research is the first to study the composition and distribution of MPs in Bosten Lake's sediment. In May, the average abundance of MPs was 0.95±0.72 particles per 10 gs, and in October, it was 0.90±0.61 particles per 10 gs. Bohu Town had the highest MP abundance, with 1.75±0.35 particles per 10 gs in spring and 2 ± 0 particles per 10 gs in autumn. In May, 53 % of the MPs were transparent, while in October, black MPs constituted 58 %. The predominant morphology was fibrous, accounting for 61 % of the total. MPs in the size range of 0.2-1 mm made up 91 % and 66 % of the total in May and October, respectively. The most common types of MPs in May were polyethylene terephthalate (PET) at 40 % and polyethylene (PE) at 26 %. In October, PET was the most prevalent at 71 %, followed by poly(ether-ether-ketone)(PEEK) at 11 %. Certain microbial taxa, such as Actinobacteriota, Pseudomonas, and Vicinamibacteraceae, associated with MP degradation or complex carbon chain breakdown, were notably enriched in sediment areas with high MP concentrations. A significant positive correlation was observed between the abundance of MPs in sediments and Actinobacteriota. Additionally, the abundance of Thiobacillus, Ca.competibacter, and other bacteria involved in soil element cycling showed a significant positive correlation with the organic matter content in the sediments. Anaerobic bacteria like Thermoanaerobacterium displayed a significant positive correlation with water depth. Our study reveals the presence, composition, and distribution of MPs in Bosten Lake's sediments, shedding light on their potential ecological impact.

Characterization and spatial distribution of microplastics in Surma river, Bangladesh: Assessing water and sediment dynamics

Microplastics (MPs), or tiny pieces of plastic, have become a major global environmental problem because of their ubiquitous availability and possible risks to aquatic ecosystems. Surma is one of the vital rivers in Bangladesh located in the northeast part, with higher chances of MP pollution due to different anthropogenic reasons. In this instance, we carried out the investigation on the abundance, distribution, and characteristics of MPs in the sediment and surface water of the river. Samples were collected from 15 major locations of the Surma river flowing through Sylhet municipality. MPs particles were isolated from sediments and water samples utilizing techniques like sieve analysis, wet peroxide oxidation, density separation, and filtration and then characterized using a stereomicroscope. The abundance of MPs recorded 8 to 18 items/L in water samples (mean ± SD: 12.33 ± 2.98 items/L) and 360 to 1120 items/kg in sediment samples (mean ± SD: 522.67 ± 197.84 items/kg). The prominent size, shape, and color of MPs isolated from sediments were 1-2 mm sizes (24.49%), fragments (47.71%), and black (30.65%). However, for water samples, 1-2 mm sizes (37.22%), fiber shapes (48.48%), and transparent colors (38.46%) were dominant features. Conspicuously, in both sediment and water samples, there was a higher prevalence of smaller sized particles, posing a significant threat to the ecosystem. This heightened risk stems from the increased likelihood of ingestion by microorganisms, as well as the larger surface area of these particles, which may serve as vectors for other pollutants like organic pollutants and heavy metals. A greater abundance of fibers suggests an increased presence of lightweight particles in the water and sediment. Furthermore, the transparent color of the MPs in water might be impacted by prolonged weathering in the river, while the presence of black-colored MPs in sediment points to the existence of plastic pellets originating from industrial and diverse sources. Future studies should concentrate on long-term and broad monitoring, ecological effects, and practical mitigation techniques for MPs, providing essential baseline data to guide the formulation of policies in developing nations. PRACTITIONER POINTS: 12.33 items/L in surface water and 522.67 items/kg in sediment were observed. High correlation indicates a single MP source in mainstream water, differing from sediment. Fiber shapes, black, and transparent colored MPs are dominant. Higher prevalence of smaller sized MPs, posing a significant threat to the aquatic ecosystem.

Distribution and effects of microplastics as carriers of heavy metals in river surface sediments

There are few studies on microplastics (MPs) in urban river sediments compared to oceans, soils, and even rivers. In this study, the seasonal abundance of MPs, as well as their influencing factors on heavy metal adsorption in river sediments of the Ancient Canal of Zhenjiang City, China, were investigated for the first time. Through on-site sampling, microscopic observation, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and high-temperature digestion, the abundance, shape, color, particle size, type, and surface characteristics of MPs in Ancient Canal sediments in different seasons, as well as the influencing factors of MPs as heavy metal carriers in different seasons, were analyzed. The results showed that the average abundance of MPs is 2049.09 ± 883.78 and 2216.36 ± 826.21 items kg-1 dry sediments in summer and winter, respectively, and different sites change significantly. In addition, particle sizes, types, colors, and shapes of MPs exhibited seasonal variations. Four MPs shapes were mainly observed: fibers, fragments, particles, and films. Among them, MPs in summer sediments are mainly fiber, and MPs in winter sediments are mainly particles. In the sediment in summer and winter, transparent MPs and small-size (<0.5 mm) MPs are the main ones, where the abundance of MPs decreased with increasing MPs size. The main MPs species are polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polycarbonate (PC), and polyethylene (PE), with PP being the predominant MPs in the sediments in different seasons. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS) revealed that the surfaces of the MPs were characterized by rough, porous, cracked, and torn, with the attachment of various heavy metal elements, and all of the heavy metal elements accumulated to different degrees on the MPs. There was a significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) between the Mn content in the MPs and the Mn content in the sediments in winter, suggesting that the Mn in the MPs in winter may be derived from the sediments. In addition, the type, shape, size, and color of MPs affect the adsorption capacity of heavy metals. Most of the adsorption of MPs on Pb showed a significant negative correlation, and the adsorption of MPs on Cr, Zn, Cu, Cd, and Mn showed a significant positive correlation. MPs can be used as carriers of heavy metals, which will further enhance the hazards of living organisms and pose a potential threat to the safety of the urban river environment.

Unveiling the ecotoxicological impact of microplastics on organisms - the persistent organic pollutant (POP): A comprehensive review

Microplastics have been ubiquitous in our environment for decades, and numerous studies have revealed their extensive dispersion, reaching far beyond the surface of the land, soil, aquatic ecosystems. They have infiltrated the food-chain, the food web, even the air we breathe, as well as the water we drink. Microplastics have been detected in the food we consume, acting as vectors for hazardous chemicals that adhere to their hydrophobic surfaces. This can result in the transfer of these chemicals to the aquatic life, posing a threat to their well-being. The release of microplastics into different environmental settings can give rise to various eco-toxicological implications. The substantial body of literature has led scientists to the consensus that microplastic pollution is a global problem with the potential to impact virtually any type of ecosystem. This paper aims to discuss crucial information regarding the occurrence, accumulation, and ecological effects of microplastics on organisms. It also highlights the new and emerging disease named "Plasticosis" that is directly linked to microplastics and its toxicological effects like permanent scarring and long-term inflammation in the digestive system of the seabirds. By comprehending the behaviour of these microplastic pollutants in diverse habitats and evaluating their ecological consequences, it becomes possible to facilitate a better understanding of this toxicological issue.

Occurrence and analysis of microplastics in municipal wastewater, Poland

Microplastics are a growing environmental threat and wastewater treatment plants have been identified as significant conduits for these pollutants. This study addresses microplastic loading in the influent of a large urban wastewater treatment plant, presenting a detailed analysis of their prevalence and characteristics. Our findings reveal a concentration of 4.09 microplastic particles per litre in the tributary. We performed a detailed statistical comparison of the microplastic particles, categorising them by shape, size, colour, and polymer type. Using Fourier transform total reflectance infrared spectroscopy, we identified 13 different polymer types, with polyethylene terephthalate, rubber, and polyethylene predominating. The analysis showed that textile fibres, mainly from clothing, are the most prevalent form of microplastic in wastewater, followed by fragments from the breakdown of larger plastic objects and films. This research highlights the critical need for strategic interventions to mitigate microplastic pollution at municipal sources.

Microplastic abundance in the semi-enclosed Osaka Bay, Japan

Anthropogenic particles in sea surface water of the semi-enclosed Osaka Bay were identified using stereomicroscopy, classified according to polymer type using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and categorized according to their physical characteristics. A total of 565.1 particles were detected in the water samples. However, plastic particles accounted for only 22.4% of the particles. Microplastic abundance in Osaka Bay showed seasonal variance from 8.9 ± 1.4 (in May) to 22.8 ± 6.5 particles/L (in July), which is consistent with previous reports in other semi-enclosed bays. Microplastics were mainly fragmented and fiber shaped, with gray and colorless/white coloration. The dominant polymer types were polypropylene, poly(methylmethacrylate), polyester, polyethylene, and polyethylene terephthalate. Generally, there were considerably higher abundances of microplastics at offshore sites compared with nearshore sites. The results of this study suggest that local river effluents and marine-related activities are probable sources of microplastics in Osaka Bay.

Microplastic detection and remediation through efficient interfacial solar evaporation for immaculate water production

Freshwater scarcity and microplastics (MPs) pollution are two concerning and intertwined global challenges. In this work, we propose a "one stone kills two birds" strategy by employing an interfacial solar evaporation platform (ISEP) combined with a MPs adsorbent. This strategy aims to produce clean water and simultaneously enhance MPs removal. Unlike traditional predecessors, our ISEP generates condensed water free from MPs contamination. Additionally, the photothermally driven interfacial separation process significantly improves the MPs removal performance. We observed a removal ratio increase of up to 5.5 times compared to previously reported MPs adsorbents. Thus, our rationally-designed ISEP holds promising potential to not only mitigate the existing water scarcity issue but also remediate MPs pollution in natural water environments.

Upcycling of PVC waste to high-value sorbent with KOH-activation for efficient removal of organic dyes

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), known for its chemical stability and flame-retardant qualities, has many uses in various fields, such as pipes, electric wires, and cable insulation. Research has established its potential recovery as a fluidic fuel through pyrolysis, but the use of PVC pyrolysis oil, which is tainted by chlorine, is constrained by its low heat value and harmful environmental effects. This study engineered a layered double hydroxide (LDH) to tackle these challenges. The LDH facilitated dechlorination during PVC pyrolysis and bolstered thermal stability via cross-linking. During pyrolysis with LDH, PVC was transformed into carbon-rich precursors to sorbents. Chemical activation of these residues using KOH created sorbents with a specific surface area of 1495.4 m2 g⁻1, rendering them hydrophilic. These resulting sorbents displayed impressive adsorption capabilities, removing up to 486.79 mg g⁻1 of methylene blue and exhibiting the simultaneous removal of cations and anions.

Efficacy of chemical digestion methods to reveal undamaged microplastics from planktonic samples

Standardisation and validation of methods for microplastics research is essential. A major methodological challenge is the removal of planktonic organisms from marine water samples allowing for the identification of microplastics associated to planktonic communities. To improve the reproducibility and accuracy of digestion methods for the removal of planktonic biomass, we compared and modified existing chemical digestion methods. These digestion methods included an acidic digestion using nitric acid, alkaline digestions with potassium hydroxide (alkaline 1 digestion) and sodium hydroxide from drain cleaner (alkaline 2 digestion), an oxidative digestion using sodium dodecyl sulfate with hydrogen peroxide, and an enzymatic digestion using enzyme drain clean pellets. Chemical digestion of three densities of zooplankton communities (high, medium, and low) in the presence of five commonly found environmental microplastic pollutants (polyamide, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, and polystyrene) were performed for each treatment. The chemical treatments were assessed for (i) their digestion efficiency of zooplankton communities by different biomass densities, and (ii) their impact on microplastic particles through the comparison of both chemical (Raman spectroscopy) and physical (length, width, and visual) changes, between the pre-treatment and post-treatment microplastic particles. The alkaline 1, alkaline 2 and oxidative methods demonstrated significantly better digestion efficiency (p < 0.05) than the modified enzymatic and acidic treatments. The acidic, alkaline 1, and alkaline 2, treatments caused the most damages to the microplastic particles. We suggest future studies to implement the oxidative digestion method with sodium dodecyl sulfate and hydrogen peroxide because of its high digestion efficiency, and low damage to microplastic particles. This method is similar to the wet peroxide oxidation digestion method used throughout the literature but can be implemented at a lower cost.

Exploring the abundance of microplastics in Indian landfill leachate: An analytical study

Landfills are a major source of many emerging pollutants, including microplastics (MPs). This makes them a potential threat to human and environmental health and calls for a more detailed analysis of their hazard potential. India is a developing country with multiple unscientific waste dumping sites. In spite of their hazardous nature, detailed studies on the abundance of microplastics in landfills in India are scanty. Current work investigates the abundance and diversity of MPs in two landfills of India, Uruli Devachi in Pune (S1) and Deonar in Mumbai (S2). MPs collected from landfill leachate using multiple filters were analyzed using an optical microscope and categorized on the basis of shape, color and size to give information on their distribution. MP abundance in S1 was 1473 ± 273.01 items/L while 2067 ± 593.75 items/L were found in leachate from S2. Film and fragment were the dominant shape and black was the dominant color of MP found in both the landfills. Maximum number of MPs were in the size range below 100 μm in both the landfills necessitating the study of small sized particles. Chemical characterization revealed the prevalence of four types of MPs (polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, cellulose acetate and polyvinyl chloride). This study sheds light on the prevalence, characteristics, abundance and distribution of MPs in landfill leachate in Western India, sparking more research into the processes followed for capturing the factual small sized microplastic abundance data. This study is vital for a detailed management of landfill leachate enabling a sustainable waste management and targeted actions for ecosystem preservation.

Microplastic pollution characteristics and ecological risk assessment in the Wuding River Basin, China

Microplastics (MPs), as a new type of environmental pollutant, have attracted extensive attention in recent years. However, there has been relatively little research specifically focusing on MPs in the Yellow River Basin, China, particularly regarding MP migration patterns. Based on surface water and sediment samples from 19 sampling sites in the Wuding River (WDR), the abundances and characteristic distributions of MPs were analyzed, and the environmental factors affecting their distribution and potential ecological risks were evaluated. The results showed that the MP abundances in surface water and sediments of the WDR were significantly different (P < 0.05), with mean values of 2.98 ± 0.69 items/L and 419.47 ± 75.61 items/kg, respectively. In terms of MP characteristics, the most common size class was 0.1-0.5 mm in surface water. Polyethylene (PE, 32.50%) and polypropylene (PP, 27.50%) were the main polymer types of MPs in surface water. Although similar MP characteristics were observed in sediments, there were significantly more particles in the <0.1 mm particle size (P < 0.05), which was 15.0% higher than in surface water. Also, more high-density MP fragments were observed in sediment samples. The retention of MPs in sediments was influenced by the MP characteristics (density, shape, particle size) and sediment particle size. In contrast, the MP abundance in surface water was more closely related to the presence of other environmental pollutants, such as total phosphorus (WTP) and ammonia nitrogen (WAN). Temperature (T), agricultural land (AGR), and residential land (RES) only had significant effects on the distribution of MPs in surface water (P < 0.05). Potential ecological risk assessments revealed that MP pollution in sediments was more serious than in surface water, especially in the middle and lower reaches. The results of this study are important for understanding MP transport in a sandy river and for eliminating potential sources of MPs.

Assessment of Microplastics and Potentially Toxic Elements in Surface Sediments of the River Kelvin, Central Scotland, United Kingdom

Contamination of the environment by microplastics (MPs), polymer particles of <5 mm in diameter, is an emerging concern globally due to their ubiquitous nature, interactions with pollutants, and adverse effects on aquatic organisms. The majority of studies have focused on marine environments, with freshwater systems only recently attracting attention. The current study investigated the presence, abundance, and distribution of MPs and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in sediments of the River Kelvin, Scotland, UK. Sediment samples were collected from eight sampling points along the river and were extracted by density separation with NaCl solution. Extracted microplastics were characterised for shape and colour, and the polymer types were determined through attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. Pollution status and ecological risks were assessed for both the microplastics and PTEs. Abundance of MPs generally increased from the most upstream location (Queenzieburn, 50.0 ± 17.3 particles/kg) to the most downstream sampling point (Kelvingrove Museum, 244 ± 19.2 particles/kg). Fibres were most abundant at all sampling locations, with red, blue, and black being the predominant colours found. Larger polymer fragments were identified as polypropylene and polyethylene. Concentrations of Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn exceeded Scottish background soil values at some locations. Principal component and Pearson's correlation analyses suggest that As, Cr, Pb and Zn emanated from the same anthropogenic sources. Potential ecological risk assessment indicates that Cd presents a moderate risk to organisms at one location. This study constitutes the first co-investigation of MPs and PTEs in a river system in Scotland.

Microplastics in aquatic ecosystems of Africa: A comprehensive review and meta-analysis

Microplastic pollution is a global issue of great public concern. Africa is flagged to host some of the most polluted water bodies globally, but there is no enough information on the extent of microplastic contamination and the potential risks of microplastic pollution in African aquatic ecosystems. This meta-analysis has integrated data from published articles about microplastic pollution in African aquatic ecosystems. The data on the microplastic distribution and morphological characteristics in water, sediments and biota from African rivers, lakes, oceans and seas were extracted from 75 selected studies. Multivariate statistics were used to critically analyze the effects of sampling and detection methods, ecological risks, spatial distribution and similarity of microplastics in relation to the geographical distance between sampling sites. This study found that sampling methods have significant effect on abundance and morphological characteristics of microplastics and that African aquatic ecosystems are highly contaminated with microplastics compared to global data. The most prevalent colors were white, transparent and black, the most prevalent shapes were fibres and fragments, and the most available polymers were polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and polyethene terephthalate (PET). Microplastic polymers similarity decreased with an increase in geographical distance between sites. Risk levels of microplastics in African aquatic ecosystems were comparatively high, and more than 40 % of water and sediments showed highest level of ecological risk. This review provides recent information on the prevalence, distribution and risks of microplastics in African aquatic ecosystems.

Microplastics in the Volta Lake: Occurrence, distribution, and human health implications

Pollution of plastic waste in aquatic ecosystems in Ghana is of significant concern with potential adverse effects on food safety and ecosystem function. This study examined the abundance and distribution of microplastics (MPs) in freshwater biota samples namely: the African river prawn (Macrobrachium vollenhovenii), the Volta clam (Galatea paradoxa), Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), and sediment from the Volta Lake. Both biota and sediment samples were subjected to microscopic identification and FTIR analysis. In biota samples, the highest mean microplastic abundance of 4.7 ± 2.1 items per individual was found in the prawn, while the Nile tilapia recorded the least (2.8 ± 0.6 items per individual). A total of 398 microplastic particles were observed in sediment samples from the Volta Lake. Microfibers were the major plastic shapes identified in biota and sediment samples. We examined the relationship between microplastic abundance, biota size, and sediment properties. Despite the lack of statistical significance, microplastic shape, size, and polymer composition in assessed organisms mirrored those in the benthic sediment. Polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, and polystyrene were the four dominant polymer types identified in the organisms and sediments. Although the estimated human exposure was relatively low compared with studies from other regions of the world, the presence of microplastics raises concern for the safety of fisheries products consumed by the general populace in the country. This research is essential for developing effective mitigation measures and tackling the wider effects of microplastic contamination on Ghana's freshwater ecosystems, particularly the Volta Lake.

Distribution and risk assessment of microplastic pollution in a rural river system near a wastewater treatment plant, hydro-dam, and river confluence

Rivers are the natural drainage system, transporting anthropogenic wastes and pollution, including microplastics (plastic < 5 mm). In a riverine system, microplastics can enter from different sources, and have spatial variance in concentration, physical and chemical properties, and imposed risk to the ecosystem. This pilot study presents an examination of microplastics in water and sediment samples using a single sample collection from the rural Raquette River, NY to evaluate a hypothesis that distinct locations of the river, such as downstream of a wastewater treatment plant, upstream of a hydro-dam, and river confluence, may be locations of higher microplastics concentration. In general, our results revealed the presence of high microplastic concentrations downstream of the wastewater treatment plant (in sediments), upstream of the hydro dam (both water and sediment), and in the river confluence (water sample), compared to other study sites. Moreover, the risk assessment indicates that even in a rural river with most of its drainage basin comprising forested and agricultural land, water, and sediment samples at all three locations are polluted with microplastics (pollution load index, PLI > 1; PLIzone = 1.87 and 1.68 for water and sediment samples respectively), with risk categories between Levels I and IV ("minor" to "danger"). Overall, the river stands in a "considerable" risk category (PRIzone = 134 and 113 for water and sediment samples respectively). The overall objective of this pilot study was to evaluate our hypothesis and advance our understanding of microplastic dynamics in rural river systems, elucidating their introduction from a point source (wastewater treatment plant), transit through an impediment (hydro-dam), and release into a vital transboundary river (confluence of Raquette-St. Lawrence Rivers).

Comparison of plastic pollution between waters and sediments in four Po River tributaries (Northern Italy)

The monitoring of plastic contamination in freshwaters is still pioneering in comparison with marine environments, and few studies analyzed the distribution of these pollutants in both aqueous and bottom compartments of continental waters. Therefore, the aim of this study was the comparison of plastic pollution in both waters and sediments of four Po River tributaries (Ticino, Adda, Oglio and Mincio Rivers), which outflow from the main Italian sub-alpine Lakes, in order to establish the strengths and weaknesses of both matrices. The main results pointed out a heterogeneous plastic contamination, with the lowest values in Ticino (0.9 ± 0.5 plastics/m3 in waters and 6.8 ± 4.5 plastics/kg dry weight - d.w. - in sediments) and the highest in Mincio (62.9 ± 53.9 plastics/m3 in waters and 26.5 ± 13.3 plastics/kg d.w in sediments), highlighting a plastic amount in sediments four times higher than waters. Plastic pollution, mainly due to microplastics, was associated principally to a domestic input in both waters and sediments of Ticino and Adda Rivers, as well as in sediments of Oglio, while an industrial pollution was found in waters and sediments of Mincio and Oglio waters. Our data clearly highlighted as the monitoring of both matrices provide complementary information for a holistic risk assessment of these emerging contaminants in freshwaters: the aqueous matrix provides an instantaneous picture of contamination, while sediments the history of pollution.

Emerging isolation and degradation technology of microplastics and nanoplastics in the environment

Microplastics (MPs, less than 5 mm in size) are widely distributed in surroundings in various forms and ways, and threaten ecosystems security and human health. Its environmental behavior as pollutants carrier and the after-effects exposed to MPs has been extensively exploited; whereas, current knowledge on technologies for the separation and degradation of MPs is relatively limited. It is essential to isolate MPs from surroundings and/or degrade to safe levels. This in-depth review details the origin and distribution of MPs. Provides a comprehensive summary of currently available MPs separation and degradation technologies, and discusses the mechanisms, challenges, and application prospects of these technologies. Comparison of the contribution of various separation methods to the separation of NPs and MPs. Furthermore, the latest research trends and direction in bio-degradation technology are outlooked.

An evaluation on microplastic accumulations in Turkish soils under different land uses

Microplastic (MP) pollution is now widely reported in soil ecosystems. However, the level of this pollution in soil ecosystems has not been sufficiently elucidated. Moreover, there is little understanding of how land use conditions affect the occurrence and distribution of MPs in soils. Therefore, this study examined 55 soil samples (44 agricultural and 11 urban) from the Mediterranean, Aegean, and Marmara regions of Türkiye, representing both agricultural and urban land uses. The samples were analyzed for MP distribution characteristics, such as abundance, shape, size, color, and type. Different types of MPs were detected in the soil samples, and their averages in agricultural and urban soils were 192.7 ± 14.2 and 127.3 ± 21.6 particles kg-1, respectively. MP abundance in the soil exhibited variations between different land uses, with agricultural areas showing higher levels compared to urban areas. In agricultural soils, MPs were predominantly blue-colored (44.6 %), in the form of fibers (74.9 %), smaller than 1000 μm (66.1 %), and primarily constituted polyethylene (90.8 %). In urban areas, MPs were also blue-colored (54.7 %), had a fiber shape (64.2 %), smaller than 1000 μm (70.6 %), and mostly belonged to the polyethylene category (78.5 %). A significant difference in MP concentrations was observed between agricultural and urban areas, reflecting the influence of distinct land uses on MP levels. Moreover, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed that soil properties, including pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, aggregate stability, average weight diameter, sand, clay, and silt, emerged as the primary determinants influencing the abundance and size of MPs within the soil. These findings contribute valuable insights into the origins of soil MPs and the intricate connections between MPs and varying soil characteristics across diverse land use categories.

Comparison of concentration, shape, and polymer composition between microplastics and mesoplastics in Japanese river waters

While plastics are classified by size as microplastics (<5 mm), mesoplastics (5-25 mm), and macroplastics (>25 mm), research in rivers has centered on microplastics, followed by macroplastics, with limited research on mesoplastics (research gap). This study aims to clarify the concentration, shape, and polymer composition of microplastics and mesoplastics in Japanese river water. We conducted field surveys for microplastics and mesoplastics in 147 rivers and at 185 measurement stations. The novelty of this study is in the use of a large number of field data to minimize the effect of the spatial difference in the microplastics and mesoplastics on the data analysis. Microplastics and mesoplastics were found at 183 (99 %) and 136 (74 %) stations, respectively. The difference between the concentration of microplastics and mesoplastics increased significantly with the increase in the concentration of microplastics, showing that the concentration of both microplastics and mesoplastics should be monitored to prevent an underestimation of plastic pollution in rivers with the appropriate sampling. A 2-stage size classification with microplastics (<5 mm) and macroplastics (>5 mm) is not suitable because the mesoplastics may be substantially overlooked. The regression slopes between microplastics and mesoplastics concentrations significant decrease in variance with increasing data number, suggesting the necessity of the large number of samples used in this study. The predominant shapes and polymer types of microplastics and mesoplastics were found to be fragment and fiber and polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), respectively, which were affected appreciably by many fiber clusters. The fiber and PET ratios were dominant at stations with small population densities and urban ratios and can be attributed to atmospheric deposition and the underdeveloped rate of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the dynamics and fate of fiber clusters inside and outside the basin.

Temporal and spatial variation of microplastics in the urban rivers of Harbin

This study was to investigate temporal and spatial variation of microplastics in surface water and sediment in the urban rivers of Harbin during dry and wet season. Water samples (n = 25) in Xinyi River (n = 13) and Ashe River (n = 12) were collected from the selected sampling points. Microplastics in urban rivers in Harbin included polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyamide (PA), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The results show that urban rivers in Harbin had relatively mild microplastic abundance with most fragments in shape and colorless in color. PP and PE were the major polymers in surface water samples, while PVC and PET were the major polymers in sediment, which were dominated by large-size and granulate shape microplastics. Source apportionment demonstrate that the main sources of microplastics in Xinyi River and Ashe River during dry season were domestic wastewater and effluent from rainfall, while the main sources of microplastics in Xinyi River and Ashe River during wet season were wastewater, atmospheric sedimentation, and agricultural source. The morphology of microplastics in surface water and sediment in urban rivers of Harbin was negatively correlated with water velocity and positively correlated with the concentration of suspended matter, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity. Riparian vegetation on the sides of Xinyi and Ashe River decreased migration process of microplastics by vegetal purification and then resulted in low abundance of microplastics. In conclusion, this study highlighted the occurrence characteristics, source apportionment and environmental influencing factors of microplastics in urban rivers of Harbin, which may develop new insights into the reduction of abundance of microplastics in the urban rivers.

Microplastics in the Asia-Pacific Region in the Plasticene Era: Exposures and Health Risks

Within the broader Anthropocene Epoch resides the Plasticene Era, where humans are subjected pervasively to nano- and microplastics (NMPs). Human's widespread exposure with NMPs occurs through the air we breathe, water we drink, and food we eat. NMP sources are wide and varied; atmospheric NMPs are largely attributed to fibres from car tyres and synthetic clothing, while particles from food packaging, personal care products, and plastic manufacturing contribute significantly to food and water contamination. NMPs have become inherent within the human body and have been found in every organ. As such, the evidence base around adverse health effects is fragmented but growing. This article presents a mini-review and report of sessions presented about NMPs at the 19th International Conference of the Pacific Basin Consortium for Environment and Health, held on Jeju Island, in 2022. Abundant evidence of substantial exposure to NMPs in the Asia-Pacific region has been exhibited. Addressing this issue necessitates the collaboration of policymakers, manufacturers, and researchers to develop safer alternatives and implement mitigation and remediation strategies. The ongoing development of a new United Nations-led global plastic treaty presents a crucial opportunity that must be acted on and not be compromised.

The path of microplastics through the rare biodiversity estuary region of the northern Bay of Bengal

Due to its harmful effects on ecosystems and human health, microplastic (MP) pollution has become a significant environmental problem on a global scale. Although MPs' pollution path and toxic effects on marine habitats have been examined worldwide, the studies are limited to the rare biodiversity estuary region of Hatiya Island from the northern Bay of Bengal. This study aimed to investigate the MP pollution path and its influencing factors in estuarine sediments and water in rare biodiversity Hatiya Island in the northern Bay of Bengal. Sixty water and sediment samples were collected from 10 sampling sites on the Island and analyzed for MPs. The abundance of MPs in sediment ranged from 67 to 143 pieces/kg, while the abundance in water ranged from 24.34 to 59 pieces/m3. The average concentrations of MPs in sediment and water were 110.90 ± 20.62 pieces/kg and 38.77 ± 10.09 pieces/m3, respectively. Most identified MPs from sediment samples were transparent (51%), while about 54.1% of the identified MPs from water samples were colored. The fragment was the most common form of MP in both compartments, with a value of 64.6% in sediment samples and 60.6% in water samples. In sediment and water samples, almost 74% and 80% of MP were <0.5 mm, respectively. Polypropylene (PP) was the most abundant polymer type, accounting for 51% of all identified polymers. The contamination factor, pollution load index, polymer risk score, and pollution risk score values indicated that the study area was moderately polluted with MPs. The spatial distribution patterns and hotspots of MPs echoed profound human pathways. Based on the results, sustainable management strategies and intervention measures were proposed to reduce the pollution level in the ecologically diverse area. This study provides important insights into evaluating estuary ecosystem susceptibility and mitigation policies against persistent MP issues.

Microplastics in sediments from urban and suburban rivers: Influence of sediment properties

Although sediments are considered to be a major sink for microplastics (MP), there is still a relative lack of knowledge on the factors that influence the occurrence and abundance of MP in riverine sediments. The present study investigated the occurrence and distribution of MP in riverine sediments collected at twelve sites representative of different populated and urbanized rivers (To Lich, Nhue and Day Rivers) located in the Red River Delta (RRD, Vietnam, during dry and rainy seasons. MP concentrations ranged from 1600 items kg-1 dw to 94,300 items kg-1dw. Fiber shape dominated and MP were made of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) predominantly. An absence of seasonal effect was observed for both fragments and fibers for each rivers. Decreasing MP concentrations trend was evidenced from the To Lich River, to the Nhue River and to the Day River, coupled with a decreasing fiber length and an increasing fragment area in the surface sediment from upstream to downstream. Content of organic matter was correlated to MP concentrations suggesting that, high levels of organic matter could be MP hotspots in urban rivers. Also, high population density as well as in highly residential areas are related to higher MP concentrations in sediments. Finally, a MP high ecological risk (RI: 866 to 4711) was calculated in the RDD.

Depth profiles of microplastics in sediments from inland water to coast and their influential factors

Microplastics, plastic particles with a size smaller than 5 mm, are widely observed in the global environments and pose a growing threat as they accumulate and affect the environments in numerous ways. These particles can be transported from inland water to coast and disperse from surface water to deep sediments, especially the latter, while knowledge of the hidden microplastics in sediment layers is still lacking. Understanding the characteristics and behavior of microplastics in deep sediments from inland water to coast is crucial for estimating the present and future global plastic budget from land to seas. Herein, present knowledge of microplastic sedimentation from inland water to coast is reviewed, with a focus on the physical characteristics of microplastics and environmental factors that affect sedimentation. The abundance, shape, composition, and timeline of microplastics in sediment layers in rivers, floodplains, lakes, estuaries and coastal wetlands are presented. The abundance of microplastics in sediment layers varies across sites and may exhibit opposite trends along depth, and generally the proportion of relatively small microplastics increases with depth, while less is known about the vertical trends in the shape and composition of microplastics. Timeline of microplastics is generally linked to the sedimentation rate, which varies from millimeters to centimeters per year in the reviewed studies. The spatiotemporal characteristics of microplastic sedimentation depend on the settling and erosion of microplastics, which are determined by two aspects, microplastic characteristics and environmental factors. The former aspect includes size, shape and density influenced by aggregation and biofouling, and the latter includes dynamic forces, topographic features, bioturbation and human activities. The comprehensive review of these factors highlights the needs to further quantify the characteristics of microplastic sedimentation and explore the role of these factors in microplastic sedimentation on various spatiotemporal scales.

Microplastics in the River Ganga and its fishes: Study of a Himalayan River

The River Ganga has been explored for microplastics (MPs) majorly in the lower or middle course, while the upper course from where the river starts its journey remains untouched. This study investigates the occurrence and distribution of MPs in the river environment (water and sediment) and common fishes inhabiting the upper stretch of River Ganga in the Uttarakhand state of India. A volume-reduce method by using sieve filtration was used to take water and sediment samples from the study area while fish samples were collected using net method. The samples underwent alkali digestion, microscopic examination, and chemical analysis using Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). An average of 118.5 ± 49.65 particles per 1000 L and 131.5 ± 53.60 particles/kg dry weight were found in water and sediment respectively. While in the fishes, Tor tor, Schizothorax richardsonii, Labeo dero and Gara gotyla gotyla MPs were 53.13 ± 63.77, 36.33 ± 22.34, 15.42 ± 9.33 and 12.63 ± 5.93 particles/individual respectively. A positive correlation was observed between the number of MPs in fish and their body length, weight, and gut weight, while no correlation was found between feeding habit and MP accumulation. The majority of MPs detected were fibers ranging from 100 μm to 1 mm in size. Polymer types varied among water, sediment, and fish samples, with polyethylene (PE) predominant in water, polypropylene (PP) dominant in sediment, and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polystyrene (PS) most abundant in fish samples.

Microplastics distribution in river side bars: The combined effects of water level and wind intensity

Rivers are the main pathway for microplastics (MP) transport toward the ocean. However, the understanding of the processes involved in the deposition and mobilization of MP in rivers, specifically in sediment side bars (SB), remains very limited. The objectives of this study were: (i) to examine the effect of hydrometric fluctuations and wind intensity on the distribution of microplastics (MP < 5 mm) in the SB of large river (the Paraná River), (ii) to determine the characteristics of MP to infer their origin and fate, and (iii) to discuss potential similarities or differences between MP suspended in the water column and MP found in sediment. The SB and water column were sampled during the autumn, winter, and spring of 2018, and the summer of 2019 at different river discharges and wind intensities. >90 % of the MP items found were fiber of polyethylene terephthalate (PET; FT-IR analysis), the most common MP color was blue, and most were in the 0.5-2 mm size range. The concentration/composition of MP varied according to the river discharge and wind intensity. During the falling limb of the hydrograph when discharge is decreasing and sediments are exposed for short periods (13-30 days), MP particles transported by the flow were deposited on temporarily exposed SB, accumulating there in high densities (309-373 items/kg). However, during the drought, when sediments remained exposed for a long time (259 days), MP were mobilized and transported by the wind. During this period (no influence of the flow), MP densities significantly decreased on SB (39-47 items/kg). In conclusion, both hydrological fluctuations and wind intensity played a significant role in MP distribution in SB.

Occurrence and risk associated with urban road-deposited microplastics

An in-depth understanding of urban road-deposited MPs is important for the accurate prediction of the risk posed by MPs in different exposure scenarios. This study provides new insights into the intrinsic/extrinsic factors in terms of the variability of concentration and species in urban road-deposited MPs. The study results confirmed that a considerable abundance of road-deposited MPs can be identified with the average concentration ranging from 0.33 to 3.64 g m-2. Land use types and sediment particle size are the important factors that contribute to MPs abundance. The majority of detected MPs including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) are mainly derived from anthropogenic activities in commercial and residential land uses while rubber MP particles in urban road surfaces are mainly derived from tyre wear. The significant correlation (p < 0.05) between MPs and fine dust particles (< 150 µm) indicated the high affinity of small dust particles for MPs. The risk scores from MPs varied greatly from 10 to 11,000 among the study sites, which indicated the significant spatial variation of potential environmental risks posed by road-deposited MPs. The hotspots of risks posed by MPs were in areas with a high fraction of industrial, commercial and residential land uses. Specifically, the highest risk from MPs was found in mixed industrial and residential areas.

Occurrences, sources, fate and impacts of plastic on aquatic organisms and human health in global perspectives: What Bangladesh can do in future?

Bangladesh is not an exception to the growing global environmental problem of plastic pollution. Plastics have been deemed a blessing for today's world thanks to their inexpensive production costs, low weight, toughness, and flexibility, but poor biodegradability and massive misuse of plastics are to blame for widespread contamination of the environmental components. Plastic as well as microplastic pollution and its adverse consequences have attracted significant investigative attention all over the world. Plastic pollution is a rising concern in Bangladesh, but scientific studies, data, and related information are very scarce in numerous areas of the plastic pollution problem. The current study examined the effects of plastic and microplastic pollution on the environment and human health, and it examined Bangladesh's existing knowledge of plastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems in light of the rapidly expanding international research in this field. We also made an effort to investigate the current shortcomings in Bangladesh's assessment of plastic pollution. This study proposed several management approaches to the persistent plastic pollution problem by analyzing studies from industrialized and emerging countries. Finally, this work pushed investigators to investigate Bangladesh's plastic contamination thoroughly and develop guidelines and policies to address the issue.

Microplastic abundance, distribution, and diversity in water and sediments along a subtropical river system

Microplastic pollution in aquatic environments has been a ubiquitous concern in recent years, owing to their rapid production combined with poor waste management practices. However, information on freshwater microplastics in the Global South is still scarce, despite growing research on freshwater microplastics in recent years, particularly within the Global North. To help address this knowledge gap, we studied water and sediment microplastic dynamics along a subtropical river system, i.e. Crocodile River around the Nelspruit City area (South Africa), across three different seasons (i.e. cool-dry, hot-dry, hot-wet) using a combination of diversity indices and multivariate analyses. Microplastics were more abundant during the cool-dry season in the surface water samples (mean 1058 particles m-3) and high during the hot-dry season (mean 568 particles kg-1 dwt) in the sediment samples. The hot-wet season had a low particle density in both surface water (mean 625 particles m-3) and sediments (mean 86 particles kg-1 dwt) samples. Microplastic shapes were dominated by fibres and fragments, with the colour scheme dominated by transparent, blue, and black. The abundance of microplastics was positively correlated with pH and resistivity, and negatively with river flow. Wastewater was attributed as a primary source of microplastics, particularly because of the observed dominant fibre microplastics, usually released during laundry. Our results suggest that Crocodile River and its tributaries are temporary sinks of microplastics during periods of low rainfall. Implications of this pollution are far-reaching, including effects on residents who are dependent on the Crocodile River as a source of drinking water and aquatic biota which may be exposed to these pollutants.

Distribution of microplastics in upstream and downstream surface waters of the Iranian rivers discharging to the southern Caspian Sea

Microplastic pollution in the riverine ecosystems has caught many attentions in the scientific literatures. However, little information is available about the abundance and distribution of microplastics of the rivers discharging to the Caspian Sea. The aim of this study was to assess the spatial and seasonal distribution of microplastics in the surface waters of thirteen rivers discharging to the southern Caspian Sea. Microplastics were found in all stations with uneven distributions. The average concentrations of microplastics in the stations during snowmelt and dry seasons were 1.406 ± 0.1380 microplastics/m3 and 0.4070 ± 0.01500 microplastics/m3, respectively. Positive gradients of the rivers microplastics concentration from upstream to downstream were found. White/transparent polyethylene (PE) particles with the shape of fragment/film and the length (L) of ≤ 1 mm were the most common microplastics in the surface waters of the rivers discharging to the southern Caspian Sea. Also, the mean concentration of microplastics in spring snowmelt and runoff period was 3.45 times higher than in dry period. Factors such as sewage and household wastes; landfills; and recreational-tourism, fishing and agricultural activities along the rivers may contribute to microplastic contamination in downstream stations. Our data provide baseline information of microplastics in surface waters of rivers discharging to the southern Caspian Sea.

Assessment of filter subsampling and extrapolation for quantifying microplastics in environmental samples using Raman spectroscopy

A common method for characterizing microplastics (MPs) involves capturing the plastic particles on a filter after extraction and isolation from the sediment particles. Microplastics captured on the filter are then scanned with Raman spectroscopy for polymer identification and quantification. However, scanning the whole filter manually using Raman analysis is a labor-intensive and time-consuming process. This study investigates a subsampling method for Raman spectroscopic analysis of microplastics (operationally defined here as 45-1000 μm in size) present in sediments and isolated onto laboratory filters. The method was evaluated using spiked MPs in deionized water and two environmentally contaminated sediments. Based on statistical analyses, we found quantification of a sub-fraction of 12.5 % of the filter in a wedge form was optimal, efficient, and accurate for estimating the entire filter count. The extrapolation method was then used to assess microplastic contamination in sediments from different marine regions of the United States.

Microplastics in Tai lake food web: Trophic transfer and human health risk assessment

Although microplastics (MPs) in marine organisms have been widely studied, the toxicity of MPs in freshwaters and human health is still a global challenge. To fill this gap, we implemented an Ecopath and food web accumulation model to simulate the Tai Lake ecosystem, a region dependent on the tourism and seafood industries. Our results suggested the accumulation of MPs throughout the food web and ultimately reach organisms at high trophic levels, including human-being, who consume MPs through seafood. The adults were prone to consume more MPs than adolescents and children. Unlike clams, fish biota magnification factors indicated that MPs accumulation between specific predator-prey interactions is not expected. The abundance of MPs within clams reveals a potential risk of MPs entering the food web. To better understand the MPs transfer, we recommend paying greater attention to species-specific mechanisms and the resources they rely on.

Distinctive adsorption and desorption behaviors of temporal and post-treatment heavy metals by iron nanoparticles in the presence of microplastics

There are increasing concerns about microplastic (MP) pollution in the natural environment. Consequently, numerous physicochemical and toxicological studies have been conducted on the effects of MPs. However, few studies have concerned the potential impact of MPs on contaminated site remediation. We herein investigated the influence of MPs on the temporary and post heavy metal removal by iron nanoparticles, including pristine and sulfurized nano zero-valent irons (nZVI and S-nZVI). MPs inhibited adsorption of most heavy metals during the treatment of iron nanoparticles, and facilitated their desorption, such as Pb (II) from nZVI and Zn (II) from S-nZVI. However, such effects presented by MPs was usually less than those by dissolved oxygen (DO). Most desorption cases are irrelevant to the reduced formats of heavy metals involving redox reactions, such as Cu (I) or Cr (III), suggesting that the influence of MPs on metals are limited to those binding with iron nanoparticles through surface complexation or electrostatic interaction. As another common factor, natural organic matter (NOM) had almost no influence on the heavy metal desorption. These insights shed lights for enhanced remediation of heavy metals by nZVI/S-NZVI in the presence of MPs.

Abundance, characteristics, and ecological risks of microplastics in the riverbed sediments around Dhaka city

Microplastic (MP) pollution has become an escalating problem in Bangladesh due to its rapid urbanization, economic growth, and excessive use of plastics; however, data on MP pollution from fresh water resources in this country are limited. This study investigated microplastics pollution in riverbed sediments in the peripheral rivers of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Twenty-eight sediment samples were collected from the selected stations of the Buriganga, Turag, and Balu Rivers. Density separation and wet-peroxidation methods were employed to extract MP particles. Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to identify the polymers. The results indicated a medium-level abundance of MPs in riverbed sediment in comparison with the findings of other studies in freshwater sediments worldwide. Film shape, white and transparent color, and large-size (1-5 mm) MPs were dominant in the riverbed sediment. The most abundant polymers were polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Pollution load index (PLI) values greater than 1 were observed, indicating that all sampling sites were polluted with MPs. An assessment of ecological risks, using the abundance, polymer types, and toxicity of MPs in the sediment samples, suggested a medium to very high ecological risk of MP pollution of the rivers. The increased abundance of MPs and the presence of highly hazardous polymers, namely; polyurethane, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, polyvinyl chloride, epoxy resin, and polyphenylene sulfide, were associated with higher ecological risks. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis indicated that the MPs were subjected to weathering actions, reducing the size of MPs, which caused additional potential ecological hazards in these river ecosystems. This investigation provides baseline information on MP pollution in riverine freshwater ecosystems for further in-depth studies of risk assessment and developing strategies for controlling MP pollution in Bangladesh.

Removal of pristine and aged microplastics from water by magnetic biochar: Adsorption and magnetization

Adsorption is an efficient and eco-friendly removal technique for small pristine microplastics in water. However, small pristine microplastics are not representative of those large microplastics in natural water with different aging levels. Whether the adsorption technique is effective in removing large aged microplastics from water remained unknown. To this end, the removal efficiency of large polyamide (PA) microplastics with different aging time by magnetic corncob biochar (MCCBC) was evaluated under different experimental conditions. After treated by heated-activated potassium persulfate, the physicochemical properties of PA have changed dramatically, as evidenced by rough surface, decreased particle size and crystallinity, and increased oxygen-containing functional groups, which enhanced with aging time. These changes promoted the combination of aged PA and MCCBC, thereby resulting in a higher removal efficiency of aged PA (~97 %) than that of pristine ones (~25 %). It is supposed that the adsorption process was a result of complexation, hydrophobic interaction, and electrostatic interaction. Increased ionic strength inhibited the removal of both pristine and aged PA, and neutral pH conditions favored PA removal. Furthermore, particle size played a great role in the removal of aged PA microplastics. When the particle size of aged PA was smaller than 75 μm, their removal efficiency was significantly increased (p < 0.01). The small PA microplastics were removed by adsorption, whereas the large ones were removed by magnetization. These research findings highlight magnetic biochar as promising technique for removing environmental microplastics.

Microplastics discharged from urban drainage system: Prominent contribution of sewer overflow pollution

Urban drainage system is an important channel for terrigenous microplastics (<5 mm in size) to migrate to urban water bodies, especially the input load caused by overflow pollution in wet weather. Investigating how they transport and discharge is essential to better understand the occurrence and variability of microplastics in different water ecosystems. This study evaluated the abundance and distribution characteristics of microplastics in the drainage systems of typical coastal cities in China. The impacts of meteorological conditions and land use were explored. In particular, the prominent contribution of drainage sewer overflow pollution during storm events were investigated. The results showed that the microplastics abundance in daily sewage discharge from different drainage plots ranged between 13.6 and 30.8 items/L, with fibers as the dominant type of microplastics. Sewer overflow discharge can greatly aggravate microplastic abundance to 83.1 ± 40.2 items/L. Road runoff and sewer sediment scouring were the main pollution sources. Systematic estimates based on detailed data showed that the average microplastics emitted per capita per day in household wastewater was 3461.5 items. A quantitative estimation method was proposed to show that the annual emissions load of microplastics via urban drainage system in this research area was 5.83×10¹⁰ items/km², of which the proportion of emissions in wet weather accounted for about 60%. This research provides the first full-process of assessment and source apportionment of the microplastic distribution characteristics in old drainage system. The occurrence of storm events is an important marker of increased microplastic abundance in urban rivers, with a view to urgent need for interception of surface runoff and purification of sewer overflow pollution.

Did the COVID-19 pandemic play a role in the spatial and temporal variations of microplastics? Evidence from a tropical river in southern India

Personal protective equipment (PPE) use has increased because of COVID-19, producing more microplastics (MPs). The pandemic's impact on MP pollution in Indian rivers is little understood. In this study, the Netravathi River in Karnataka was investigated for the spatiotemporal distribution of MPs. The MPs abundance, size, and categories varied seasonally, with a higher concentration during the monsoon seasons. The reduction in rainfall during MON20 and the COVID-19 lockdown can be the reasons for the significant decrease in the MP concentration when compared to MON19. Polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate were the most abundant polymers, with a shift from polyethylene to the latter (74 %) during post-monsoon season post-lockdown. The situation of MP pollution in Western Ghats can be mitigated with the aid of appropriate waste management of plastic trash and greater public awareness about the disposal of single-use plastics, which has risen significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Microplastic pollution in riverine ecosystems: threats posed on macroinvertebrates

Microplastics (MPs) are pollutants of emerging concern that have been reported in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems as well as in food items. The increasing production and use of plastic materials have led to a rise in MP pollution in aquatic ecosystems. This review aimed at providing an overview of the abundance and distribution of MPs in riverine ecosystems and the potential effects posed on macroinvertebrates. Microplastics in riverine ecosystems are reported in all regions, with less research in Africa, South America, and Oceania. The abundance and distribution of MPs in riverine ecosystems are mainly affected by population density, economic activities, seasons, and hydraulic regimes. Ingestion of MPs has also been reported in riverine macroinvertebrates and has been incorporated in caddisflies cases. Further, bivalves and chironomids have been reported as potential indicators of MPs in aquatic ecosystems due to their ability to ingest MPs relative to environmental concentration. Fiber and fragments are the most common types reported. Meanwhile, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate (polyester), polyamide, and polyvinyl chloride are the most common polymers. These MPs are from materials/polymers commonly used for packaging, shopping/carrier bags, fabrics/textiles, and construction. Ingestion of MPs by macroinvertebrates can physically harm and inhibit growth, reproduction, feeding, and moulting, thus threatening their survival. In addition, MP ingestion can trigger enzymatic changes and cause oxidative stress in the organisms. There is a need to regulate the production and use of plastic materials, as well as disposal of the wastes to reduce MP pollution in riverine ecosystems.

Environmental impacts of microplastic and role of plastisphere microbes in the biodegradation and upcycling of microplastic

Increasing usage of plastic has led to the deposition of plastic in the environment which later become microplastic, a pollutant of global concern. These polymeric particles affect the ecosystem bestowing toxicity and impede the biogeochemical cycles. Besides, microplastic particles have been known for their role in aggravating the effect of various other environmental pollutants including organic pollutants and heavy metals. These microplastic surfaces are often colonized by the microbial communities also known as "plastisphere microbes" forming biofilms. These microbes include cyanobacteria like Nostoc, Scytonema, etc., and diatoms like Navicula, Cyclotella, etc. Which become the primary colonizer. In addition to the autotrophic microbes, Gammaproteobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria dominate the plastisphere microbial community. These biofilm-forming microbes can efficiently degrade the microplastic in the environment by secreting various catabolic enzymes such as lipase, esterase, hydroxylase, etc. Besides, these microbes have shown great potential for the bioconversion of microplastic to polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), an energy efficient and sustainable alternative to the petroleum based plastics. Thus, these microbes can be used for the creation of a circular economy using waste to wealth strategy. This review provides a deeper insight into the distribution, transportation, transformation, and biodegradation of microplastic in the ecosystem. The formation of plastisphere by the biofilm-forming microbes has been described in the article. In addition, the microbial metabolic pathways and genetic regulations involved in the biodegradation have been discussed in detail. The article suggests the microbial bioremediation and upcycling of microplastic along with various other strategies for effectively mitigate the microplastic pollution.

Unveiling the noxious effect of polystyrene microplastics in aquatic ecosystems and their toxicological behavior on fishes and microalgae

Microplastic (MP) particles are considered noxious pollutants due to their presence in aquatic habitats at almost every level of the food chain. Thus, the entry of MP particles into marine waterbodies has triggered a common research interest. Until recently, the toxicity of polystyrene towards aquatic creatures in comparison to other polymers has not been widely investigated. This article provides an extensive overview of the occurrence of microplastic particles, the route of polystyrene (PS) in the aquatic ecosystem, the PS properties characterization, and its noxious effects on the aquatic biota, particularly fishes and microalgae. Alarming high levels of polystyrene were found in urban, coastal, and rural surface waters and sediments. The fast-screening technique began with a stereoscope to determine the polystyrene particles' shape, size, and color on the organism. SEM and complemented by micro FTIR or Raman spectroscopy were used to evaluate MP's polymer structures. The findings present evidence suggesting that polystyrene buildup in fish can have long-term and unknown consequences. Meanwhile, the presence of polystyrene on microalgae causes a decrease in chlorophyll concentration and photosynthetic activity, which may disrupt photosynthesis by interfering with the electron characters and leading to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Exposure of the amphipod Hyalella azteca to microplastics. A study on subtoxic responses and particle biofragmentation

Microplastics are widespread pollutants in the environment and are considered a global pollution problem. Microplastics mostly originate from larger plastics and due to environmental conditions are undergoing constant fragmentation processes. It is important to understand the fragmentation pathways, since they play a key role in the fate of the particles, and also directly influence toxicity. Amphipods are potential inducers of plastic debris fragmentation. Here, Hyalella azteca was exposed to different concentrations (540, 2700, 5400 items/L) of 24.5 µm polystyrene microplastics (PS-MP) for 7 days. After exposure, oxidative stress, particle size reduction, and mortality were checked. No significant mortality was seen in any of the treatments, although changes were recorded in all enzymatic biomarkers analyzed. It was observed that throughout the ingestion and egestion of PS-MP by H. azteca, particles underwent intense fragmentation, presenting a final size up to 25.3% smaller than the initial size. The fragmentation over time (24, 72, 120, 168 h) was verified and the results showed a constant reduction in average particle size indicating that H. azteca are able to induce PS-MP fragmentation. This process may facilitate bioaccumulation and trophic particle transfer.

Occurrence and sources of micro-plastics in various water bodies, sediments, and fishes in Ansan, South Korea

In this study, the Pearson correlation coefficients were determined to derive correlations between micro-plastics (MPs) in carp and river crabs. MPs were detected for various water sources, including four rivers and four main waterways, sediments, and fish, using Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), microscopic analysis, and image mapping. Carp and river crabs had coefficients of 0.888 and 0.724, respectively, which showed a high positive correlation. In water samples, the MPs detected in rivers were higher than those in the main waterway. However, in sediment samples, the MPs detected in the main waterway were higher than those in the rivers. It is believed that MPs are carried toward shore by ocean tide. The size of most of the sediment MPs was 20-49 µm, representing 64.1% of the entire population. The plastics detected in this study were polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene (PE), which originate from synthetic fibers, scrubs, and packing material. MP pollution by non-point pollution sources was investigated, with the abundance of MPs increasing by 2 to 3 times between the dry and wet seasons in water and sediment, respectively. It was determined that the inflow of MPs into rivers could have been due to non-point source pollutants from household items, roads, plants, and soil around the water sources.

Spatio-temporal distribution of microplastics in water and sediment samples of the Plankenburg river, Western Cape, South Africa

Microplastic (MPs) pollution has become a subject of environmental concern due to its wide ubiquity in the environment. Microplastics are possible sources of other hazardous chemicals to aquatic organisms due to their composition and sorption properties. In this study, MPs occurrence in water and sediment samples of the Plankenburg River, Western Cape, South Africa was investigated. The physicochemical characterization of the river water was done onsite. 30 L water samples were collected and filtered in 10 L triplicates through a 250 μm mesh onsite using a metal bucket. An additional 12 L sample was collected and filtered in 4 L triplicates through 20 μm mesh in the laboratory. The extraction of MPs from water in the laboratory was by density separation. Sediment samples were also collected at the selected sites, oven-dried and microplastics in the laboratory. Sampling was conducted over four seasons - spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Microplastics were classified by visual observation and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR). The seasonal distribution of MPs in the surface water samples varied across all sites. However, spring samples had the highest MPs occurrence (5.13 ± 6.62 MP/L) and the least, in autumn (1.52 ± 2.54 MP/L). The MPs in sediment samples were observed in spring (1587.50 ± 599.32 MP/kg). Fibres were the most dominant microplastic particle type (shape), with a size range of 500-1000 μm at the different sites. The infrared spectroscopic analysis confirmed the dominant polymer type to be polyethylene. This study provides an understanding of the microplastic occurrence in the Plankenburg River system and gives a baseline for future monitoring and assessment of water and sediment in the South African freshwater systems.

Quantifying environmental emissions of microplastics from urban rivers in Melbourne, Australia

This study aims to understand the amount and type of microplastics flowing into Port Phillip Bay from urban rivers around Melbourne. Water samples were collected from the Patterson, Werribee, Maribyrnong, and Yarra Rivers, which contribute 97 % to the total flow into Port Phillip Bay. On average, the rivers contained a mean of 9 ± 15 microplastics/L and ranged from 4 ± 3 microplastics/L (Patterson) to 22 ± 11 microplastics/L (Werribee). Of the eight polymers investigated, polyamide and polypropylene were the most frequently detected polymers. Using the mean concentration of each river, the flow of microplastics into Port Philip Bay was estimated to be 7.5 × 10⁶ microplastics per day and 3.7 × 10¹⁰ microplastics per year. To fully understand the fate and transport of microplastics into Port Phillip Bay, this study would be the foundation for a more in-depth investigation. Here, further samples will be collected at more points along the river and at the midpoint of each season.

Biological responses of Chironomus sancticaroli to exposure to naturally aged PP microplastics under realistic concentrations

Microplastic (MP) is yet another form of chronic anthropogenic contribution to the environment. MPs are plastic particles (<5 mm) that have been widely found in the most diverse natural environments, but their real impacts on ecosystems are still under investigation. Here, we studied the toxicity of naturally aged secondary polypropylene (PP) MPs after constant exposure to ultraviolet radiation (26 µm) to the third instar larvae of Chironomus sancticaroli, a dipteran species. The concentrations tested were 13.5; 67.5; and 135 items g^-1 of dry sediment. C. sancticaroli organisms were investigated for fragment ingestion, mortality and changes in enzymatic biomarkers after 144 h of exposure. The organisms were able to ingest MPs from the first 48 h, and the amount of items internalized was dose-dependent and time-dependent. Overall, the results show that mortality was low, being significant at the lowest and highest concentrations (13.5 and 135 items g^-1). Regarding changes in biochemical markers, after 144 h MDA and CAT activities were both significantly altered (increased and reduced, respectively), while SOD and GST levels were unchanged. In the present study, naturally aged polypropylene MPs induced biochemical toxicity in C. sancticaroli larvae, with toxicity being higher according to exposure time and particle concentration.

Methods for controlled preparation and dosing of microplastic fragments in bioassays

Microplastic fragments (microfragments) are among the most abundant microplastic shapes found in marine ecosystems throughout the world. Due to their limited commercial availability, microfragments are rarely used in laboratory experiments. Here a novel method of microfragment production has been developed and validated. Polyethylene and polypropylene plastic stock (2 and 3 mm thick respectively) was ground using a cryomill, washed, and rinsed through a stack of sieves. Microfragments were prepared at three distinct size classes (53-150, 150-300, 300-1000 μm) and were confirmed to be accurate and consistent in size. Employing a novel ice cap dosing technique, microfragments were accurately dosed into experimental vials while excluding headspace, facilitating particle suspension without the aid of chemical surfactants. A proof of principle ingestion experiment confirmed the bioavailability of 53-150 μm polyethylene microfragments to brine shrimp Artemia sp. Together, these methods provide a controlled way to produce and dose microplastic fragments for experimental and analytical research.

Do microplastics and climate change negatively affect shredder invertebrates from an amazon stream? An ecosystem functioning perspective

Pollution and climate change are among the main threats to the biodiversity of freshwater ecosystems in the 21st century. We experimentally tested the effects of microplastic and climate change (i.e., increase in temperature and CO₂) on the survival and consumption by an Amazonian-stream shredder invertebrate. We tested three hypotheses. (1) Increased microplastic concentrations and climate change reduce shredder survival. We assumed that the combined stressors would increase toxic stress. (2) Increased concentrations of microplastics have negative effects on shredder food consumption. We assumed that blockage of the digestive tract by microplastics would lead to reduced ability to digest food. In addition, increased temperature and CO₂ would lead to an increase in metabolic cost and reduced consumption. (3) The interaction between microplastics and climate change have greater negative effects on survival and consumption than either alone. We combined different concentrations of microplastic and climate change scenarios to simulate in real-time increases in temperature and CO₂ forecast for 2100 for Amazonia. We found that both stressors had lethal effects, increasing mortality risk, but there was no interaction effect. Shredder consumption was negatively affected only by climate change. The interaction of microplastics and climate change on shredder consumption was dose-dependent and more intense in the extreme climate scenario, leading to reduced consumption. Our results indicate that microplastic and climate change may have strong effects on the consumption and/or survival of insect shredders in Amazonian streams. In addition, microplastic and climate change effects may affect not only populations but also ecosystem functioning (e.g., nutrient cycling). Integrative approaches to better understand and mitigate the effects of both stressors are necessary because plastic pollution and climate change co-occur in environments.
