Influence of surface water - groundwater interactions on the spatial distribution of pesticide metabolites in groundwater

Soil and unsaturated zone as a long-term source for pesticide metabolites in groundwater

Pesticide metabolites are frequently detected in groundwater, often exceeding the concentrations of their parent pesticides. Ceasing the application of certain pesticides has often not led to the expected decrease in metabolite concentrations in groundwater, which is potentially caused by residues in soil. Whereas pesticide residues in soils are well-documented, there are only few studies about metabolite residues. We investigated if the soil/unsaturated zone can act as a long-term source for metabolites in groundwater by combining soil analysis, groundwater analysis and numerical modelling. The field study focused on the herbicide chloridazon (CLZ) and its frequently detected metabolites desphenyl-chloridazon (DPC) and methyl-desphenyl-chloridazon (MDPC) while in the model additional pesticides and metabolites were considered. In soil samples from an agricultural area, where the last CLZ application was 5 to 10 years ago, we observed 10 times (DPC: 0.22 - 7.4 µg kg-1) and 6 times (MDPC: 0.12 - 3.1 µg kg-1) higher metabolite concentrations compared to CLZ (< 0.050 - 1.0 µg kg-1). Calculations suggested that the majority of the metabolites (DPC: 63 - 96%, MDPC: 74 - 97%) were sorbed despite their lower sorption tendency. The metabolite retention was in particular related to the organic carbon content. The calculated pore water concentrations were highest in the deepest part of the soil profile (75 - 100 cm) with median concentrations of 3.6 and 1.7 µg L-1 for DPC and MDPC, respectively. The groundwater concentrations of DPC and MDPC were 3 to 3.5 times higher in monitoring wells downgradient from the agricultural zone than upgradient of it. This increase highlights the potential of soil and unsaturated zone as a long-term metabolite source after the application stop of pesticides, consistent with the calculated elevated pore water concentrations. Numerical flow and transport model simulations suggested that this input from soil and unsaturated zone can cause elevated metabolite concentrations (> 0.1 µg L-1) in groundwater over more than one decade. The study highlights that soil and unsaturated zone can act as a long-term source of pesticide metabolites even if they have much higher mobility than the parent compound.

Modelling the impacts of climate change on agrochemical fate and transport by water on a catchment scale

The export of agrochemicals and their transformation products (TPs) following their application in the agricultural fields poses a threat to water quality. Future changes in climatic conditions (e.g. extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall or extended dry periods) could alter the degradation and mobility of agrochemicals. In this research, we use an integrated modelling framework to understand the impact of extreme climate events on the fate and transport of the agrochemical S-Metolachlor and two of its TPs (M-OXA, Metolachlor Oxanilic Acid and M-ESA, Metolachlor Ethyl Sulfonic Acid). This is done by coupling climate model outputs to the Zin-AgriTra agrochemical reactive transport model in four simulation scenarios. 1) Reference (2015-2018), 2) Very dry (2038-2041), 3) Very wet (2054-2057) and 4) High temperature (2096-2099) conditions of a selected RCP8.5 based regional climate scenario. The modelling framework is tested on an agricultural catchment, Wulka, in Burgenland, Austria. The model results indicate that 13-14 % of applied S-Metolachlor is retained in the soil, and around 85 % is degraded into TPs in the different scenarios. In very dry and high-temperature scenarios, degradation is higher, and hence, there is less S-Metolachlor in the soil. However, a large share of formed M-OXA and M-ESA are retained in the soil, which is transported via overland and groundwater flow, leading to a build-up effect in M-OXA and M-ESA river concentrations over the years. Though a small share of S-Metolachlor and TPs are transported to rivers, their river export is affected by the intensity and amount of rainfall. The very wet and high-temperature scenarios show higher S-Metolachlor and TP concentrations at the catchment outlet due to higher river discharge. The reference scenario shows higher river peak concentrations associated with higher overland flow caused by measured hourly rainfall compared to disaggregated daily precipitation data in the other scenarios.

Estimation of Effective Fracture Aperture in Glacial Tills by Analysis of Dye Tracer Penetration

This study advances a methodology to estimate effective apertures of fractures in glacial tills based on dye tracer infiltration tests and numerical simulations. The approach uses the visible penetration depth of the dye tracer along fracture flow paths as primary information to calculate effective fracture apertures. Further data used in the calculation are the dye tracer input concentration and retardation, the duration of the tracer injection, and the hydraulic gradient applied to control the infiltrating water fluxes. The method does not require measurement of hydraulic conductivity for the fractured till and enables direct observation of flow and transport patterns within the fractures (e.g., uniform flow and dye tracer distribution, channeling due to aperture variability, and presence of biogenic macropores in fractures). The approach was successfully verified by using the estimated effective fracture aperture values in Large Undisturbed Columns (LUCs) to consistently simulate both the observed LUC effluent breakthrough of a conservative bromide tracer and the water fluxes with the hydraulic gradient applied in the experiments. Sensitivity analyses revealed that estimation of small effective fracture apertures (<10 μm) required accurate determination of the dye tracer retardation factor. By contrast, in the case of larger effective apertures (>20 μm), the sensitivity of the estimated effective fracture aperture to variations in the porous material and solute transport parameters was low compared to the dominant sensitivity to the water flow through the fractures (cubic relation between flow and aperture). The proposed approach may be extended beyond laboratory applications and assist in characterizing field-scale fracture networks.

Development of an ic-ELISA and immunochromatographic assay strip for the rapid detection of chloridazon in oranges and celery

Chloridazon (CLZ) is a selective herbicide used in the control of annual broadleaf weeds. The misuse or abuse of CLZ may result in the accumulation of CLZ in crops and water, which can pose a risk to human health. In this study, a hapten of CLZ with three carbon spacer arms was designed and a highly sensitive and specific antibody against CLZ was prepared with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 0.630 ng mL-1 and a linear range of 0.181-2.195 ng mL-1.Based on this antibody, we developed an immunochromatographic assay (ICA) strip for the detection of CLZ in oranges and celery. Under optimized conditions, the visual limit of detection was 2 ng mL-1 and 10 ng mL-1 in oranges and celery, respectively, and the cut-off value was 50 ng mL-1. In CLZ-spiked samples and the recovery test, the results of the ICA strip were consistent with those of indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ic-ELISA). Therefore, the ICA strip developed in our study represents an efficient and reliable method for the rapid screening of CLZ in oranges and celery.

Natural and anthropogenic factors regulating fluoride enrichment in groundwater of the Nansi Lake Basin, Northern China

Excess fluoride (F-) in groundwater can be hazardous to human health of local residents who rely upon it. Beside natural sources, anthropogenic input may be an additional source to be considered. Twenty surface water and 396 groundwater samples were collected from the Nansi Lake Basin, with hydrogeochemical and isotope techniques employed to clarify the spatial variability, source, and the natural and anthropogenic factors regulating the occurrence of high F- groundwater. The factors responsible for elevated F- levels in surface water and deep confined aquifers are discussed based on their hydraulic relationship. Also a conceptual model of F- enrichment with different aquifer systems is put forward based on the geomorphic units of the basin. The results show that F- concentration is between 0.1 and 6.9 mg/L in the west of Lake, while ranged from 0.03 to 1.74 mg/L in the east of Lake. The hydrogeological setting and lithology are the primary factor determining the provenance of high-fluoride groundwater in the basin. Fluoride mainly originated from the dissolution of fluorine-bearing minerals, and is affected by the alkaline groundwater environment, cation exchange, adsorption, and evaporation. The landforms on the east side of Nansi Lake are low hills and piedmont sedimentary plains, where the aquifers consist of karst fissure water and overlying porewater. High F- groundwater is not observed in this area due to its rapid flow and Ca2+-enriched hydrochemical characteristics. The anthropogenic input (such as fertilizer application on farms and illegal industrial pollutant discharge), contribute F- to groundwater in varying degrees, especially in the shallow aquifers east of the lake and in some parts west of the lake. This work is a clear example of how natural processes together with human activities can affect the chemical quality of groundwater, which is essential to safeguard the sustainable management of water resources in semi-arid areas.

Health Risk Assessment of Pesticide Residues in Drinking Water of Upper Jhelum Region in Kashmir Valley-India by GC-MS/MS

Globally growing demand for agricultural and farm foods has more or less become dependent on chemical pesticides to maintain the supply chain, which undoubtedly boosts agricultural production. However, pesticides not only impact the target pests but cause hazard to human health. Pesticides are ubiquitous and can be found in almost every component of the environment. They can therefore impair human and biota health when present over the threshold level. The present study assessed the concentration of commonly used pesticides for agricultural purposes but get mixed in different sources of water, as such fifteen sampling sites along the upper Jhelum basin of Kashmir valley were chosen. For the analysis, 60 water samples were obtained from different water sources. Gas chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) was used to determine pesticide residues in water samples. Pesticide residues from 10 of the 26 commonly used pesticides were detected in water samples. Difenoconazole had the highest concentration among the pesticides detected, with a mean concentration of 0.412 ± 0.424 μg/L ranging from 0.0 μg/L to 0.8196 μg/L. The target hazards quotient (THQ) was used to quantify the possible noncarcinogenic health risks associated with drinking pesticide-contaminated water. Only chlorpyrifos and quinalphos were detected >1 in RWS3 (1.6571), RWS4 (1.0285), RWS14 (1.2571), and RWS15 (1.2000) sample sites, implying that the drinking water poses a health risk to humans. Hence, pesticide hazards should be mitigated and rigorous monitoring is needed to reduce pesticide residues in drinking water.

Reactive transport of micropollutants in laboratory aquifers undergoing transient exposure periods

Groundwater quality is of increasing concern due to the ubiquitous occurrence of micropollutant mixtures. Stream-groundwater interactions near agricultural and urban areas represent an important entry pathway of micropollutants into shallow aquifers. Here, we evaluated the biotransformation of a micropollutant mixture (i.e., caffeine, metformin, atrazine, terbutryn, S-metolachlor and metalaxyl) during lateral stream water flow to adjacent groundwater. We used an integrative approach combining concentrations and transformation products (TPs) of the micropollutants, compound-specific isotope analysis (δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N), sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons and reactive transport modeling. Duplicate laboratory aquifers (160 cm × 80 cm × 7 cm) were fed with stream water and subjected over 140 d to three successive periods of micropollutant exposures as pulse-like (6000 μg L^-1) and constant (600 μg L^-1) injections under steady-state conditions. Atrazine, terbutryn, S-metolachlor and metalaxyl persisted in both aquifers during all periods (<10 % attenuation). Metformin attenuation (up to 14 %) was only observed from 90 d onwards, suggesting enhanced degradation over time. In contrast, caffeine dissipated during all injection periods (>90 %), agreeing with fast degradation rates (t_1/2 < 3 d) in parallel microcosm experiments and detection of TPs (theobromine and xanthine). Significant stable carbon isotope fractionation (Δδ¹³C ≥ 6.6 ‰) was observed for caffeine in both aquifers, whereas no enrichment in ¹⁵N occurred. A concentration dependence of caffeine biotransformation in the aquifers was further suggested by model simulations following Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Changes in bacterial community composition reflected long-term bacterial adaptation to micropollutant exposures. Altogether, the use of an integrative approach can help to understand the interplay of subsurface hydrochemistry, bacterial adaptations and micropollutants biotransformation during stream-groundwater interactions.

Pesticides monitoring in surface water of a subsistence agricultural catchment in Uganda using passive samplers

Pesticides are intensely used in the agricultural sector worldwide including smallholder farming. Poor pesticide use practices in this agronomic setting are well documented and may impair the quality of water resources. However, empirical data on pesticide occurrence in water bodies of tropical smallholder agriculture is scarce. Many available data are focusing on apolar organochlorine compounds which are globally banned. We address this gap by studying the occurrence of a broad range of more modern pesticides in an agricultural watershed in Uganda. During 2.5 months of the rainy season in 2017, three passive sampler systems were deployed at five locations in River Mayanja to collect 14 days of composite samples. Grab samples were taken from drinking water resources. In these samples, 27 compounds out of 265 organic pesticides including 60 transformation products were detected. In the drinking water resources, we detected eight pesticides and two insecticide transformation products in low concentrations between 1 and 50 ng/L. Also, in the small streams and open fetch ponds, detected concentrations were generally low with a few exceptions for the herbicide 2,4-D and the fungicide carbendazim exceeding 1 ug/L. The widespread occurrence of chlorpyrifos posed the largest risk for macroinvertebrates. The extensive detection of this compound and its transformation product 3,4,5-trichloro-2-pyridinol was unexpected and called for a better understanding of the use and fate of this pesticide.

Degradation of Kresoxim-Methyl in Different Soils: Kinetics, Identification of Transformation Products, and Pathways Using High-Resolution-Mass-Spectrometry-Based Suspect and Non-Target Screening Approaches

This study investigated the degradation of strobilurin fungicide kresoxim-methyl (KM) in three typical agricultural soils from China by aerobic and anaerobic degradation experiments, focusing on degradation kinetics of KM, identification of transformation products (TPs), and prediction of toxicity end points via in silico approaches. KM showed a pronounced biphasic degradation in different soils and could rapidly degrade, with DT₅₀ of <3 days. Four TPs were identified by high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and three of them have never been reported before. Possible degradation pathways of KM in soil were proposed, including hydrolysis, oxidation, and reduction, and the main mechanism involved in the biodegradation of KM was the hydrolysis of methyl ester regardless of aerobic or anaerobic conditions. The results of toxicity evaluation indicated that some TPs are more toxic than KM and may have a developmental toxicity and mutagenicity, and further risk assessment should be carried out.

Global groundwater vulnerability for Pharmaceutical and Personal care products (PPCPs): The scenario of second decade of 21st century

The global production of PPCPs have increased by multiple folds promoting excessive exposure of its metabolites to humans via different aquatic systems. The higher residence time of toxic precursors of these metabolites pose direct human health risk. Among the different aquatic systems, the contamination of groundwater by PPCPs is the most concerning threat. This threat is especially critical considering the lesser oxidizing potential of the groundwater as compared to freshwater/river water. A major challenge also arises due to excessive dependency of the world's population on groundwater, which is exponentially increasing with time. This makes the identification and characterization of spatial contamination hotspots highly probabilistic as compared to other freshwater systems. The situation is more vulnerable in developing countries where there is a reported inadequacy of wastewater treatment facilities, thereby forcing the groundwater to behave as the only available sequestrating sink for all these contaminants. With increased consumption of antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals compounds, these wastes have proven capability in terms of enhancing the resistance among the biotic community of the soil systems, which ultimately can become catastrophic and carcinogenic in near future. Recent studies are supporting the aforementioned concern where compounds like diclofenac (analgesic) have attained a concentration of 1.3 mgL^-1 in the aquifer systems of Delhi, India. The situation is far worse for developed nations where prolonged and indiscriminate usage of antidepressants and antibiotics have life threating consequences. It has been confirmed that certain compounds like ofloxacin (antibiotics) and bis-(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate are present in some of the most sensitive wells/springs of the United States and Mexico. The current trend of the situation has been demonstrated by integrating a comparative approach of the published literatures in last three years. This review provides first-hand information report for formulating a directive policy framework for tackling PPCPs issues in the groundwater system.

Occurrences, transport drivers, and risk assessments of antibiotics in typical oasis surface and groundwater

Intensive use of antibiotics affects biogeochemical cycles and stimulates the evolution of antibiotic resistance, thus threatening global health and social development. The spatiotemporal distributions of antibiotics in single aqueous matrices have been widely documented; however, their occurrence in surface-groundwater systems has received less attention, especially in arid regions that usually have fragile ecosystems. Therefore, we investigated the occurrence of thirty-one antibiotics in the surface water and adjacent groundwater in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. The results showed that the total concentrations of detected antibiotics varied from 17.37 to 84.09 ng L^-1 and from 16.38 to 277.41 ng L^-1 in surface and groundwater, respectively. The median concentration of antibiotics showed the pattern of norfloxacin (4.86 ng L^-1) > ciprofloxacin (3.93 ng L^-1) > pefloxacin (3.39 ng L^-1) in surface water; whereas in groundwater, this was in the order of pefloxacin (6.30 ng L^-1) > norfloxacin (4.33 ng L^-1) > ciprofloxacin (2.68 ng L^-1). Heatmap analysis indicated that vertical infiltration had limited effects on antibiotic exchange in surface-ground water systems because of the high potential evaporation and low water storage. Redundancy analysis suggested that the oxidation-reduction potential (p < 0.01) and dissolved oxygen (p < 0.05) jointly affected the distribution of antibiotics in surface water. Ecological risk assessment showed that antibiotics in 98.9% of surface water and 99.1% of groundwater did not pose significant risks to aquatic species. The findings of this study will help develop effective mitigation strategies for antibiotics in aquatic environments.

Pesticides and their metabolites in European groundwater: Comparing regulations and approaches to monitoring in France, Denmark, England and Switzerland

Pesticides, i.e. plant protection products (PPP), biocides and their metabolites, pose a serious threat to groundwater quality and groundwater dependent ecosystems. Across large parts of Europe these compounds are monitored in groundwater to ensure compliance with the European Water Framework Directive (WFD), the Groundwater Directive (GWD) and Drinking water Directive (DWD). European regulation concerning the placing of PPP on the market includes groundwater monitoring as a higher tier of the regulatory procedure. Nevertheless, the lists of compounds to be monitored vary from one directive to another and between countries. The implementation of monitoring strategies for these directives and other national drivers, differs across Europe. This is illustrated using case studies from France, Denmark (EU member states), England (part of the EU up to January 2020) and Switzerland (associated country). The collection of data (e.g. monitoring design and analytical approaches) and dissemination at national and European level and the scale of data reporting to EU is country-specific. Data generated by the implementation of WFD and DWD can be used for retrospective purposes in the context of PPP registration whereas the post-registration monitoring data generated by the product applicants are generally only directly available to the regulators. This lack of consistency and strategic coordination between thematic regulations is partly compensated by national regulations. This paper illustrates the benefits of a common framework for regulation in Europe but shows that divergent national approaches to monitoring and reporting on pesticides in groundwater makes the task of assessment across Europe challenging.

Bioassay-based identification and removal of target and suspect toxicants in municipal wastewater: Impacts of chemical properties and transformation

Municipal wastewater contains numerous chemicals and transformation products with highly diverse physiochemical properties and intrinsic toxicity; thus, it is imperative but challenging to identify major toxicants. Herein, toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) was applied to identify major toxicants in a typical municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Impacts of chemical properties on the removal of contaminants and toxicity at individual treatment stages were also examined. The WWTP influent caused 100% death of Daphnia magna and zebrafish embryos, and toxicity characterization suggested that organics, metals, and volatiles all contributed to the toxicity. Toxicity identification based on 189 target and approximately one-thousand suspect chemicals showed that toxicity contributions of organic contaminants, metals, and ammonia to D. magna were 77%, 4%, and 19%, respectively. Galaxolide, pyrene, phenanthrene, benzo[a]anthracene, fluoranthene, octinoxate, silver, and ammonia were identified as potential toxicants. Comparatively, the detected transformation products elicited lower toxicity than their respective parent contaminants. In contrast, the analyzed contaminants showed negligible contributions to the toxicity of zebrafish embryos. Removal efficiencies of these toxicants in WWTP were highly related to their hydrophobicity. Diverse transformation and removal efficiencies of contaminants in WWTPs may influence the chemical compositions in effluent and ultimately the risk to aquatic organisms in the receiving waterways.

Gain and retain - On the efficiency of modified agricultural drainage ponds for pesticide retention

Drainage ponds have the potential to serve as long-term interface measures primarily for flood control, and mass retention. They are often considered as promising supplements for the mitigation of drainage pipe loads to improve the water quality in agricultural landscapes. In this study, a highly dynamic drainage pond system with non-steady inflows and groundwater interaction was modified and investigated regarding its potential for pesticide and transformation product (TP) retention. For this purpose, two 104-day monitoring campaigns were conducted before and after pond modification. Field experiments with fluorescent tracers, Uranine and Sulforhodamine-B, proved that structural modifications improved the hydraulic functionality of the ponds. The effective volume (Ɛ) increased from 20% to almost 100% in the modified pond and the mean hydraulic residence time (τ) was ten times longer. After a dry period, pesticide retention was high during slow refilling of the ponds, still TP loads posed a risk by infiltration into shallow groundwater due to the permeable ground. During wet periods, short nominal detention times together with high inflows led to rare high retention rates through peak attenuation. Moderate inflows resulted in extremely variable retention values, owing to the small pond storage capacity. Along with this, the total retention efficiency after modification reached up to 38% for mobile, 29% for sorptive pesticides, and 32% for mobile TPs. To achieve the best performances for ponds as natural landscape elements, they should be analysed for their hydrological functionality as a prerequisite and then modified for delayed pesticide and TP transport. Then, dynamic drainage ponds can utilize their full potential regarding mitigation of pesticide and TP loads in agricultural catchments.

A risk ranking of pesticides in Irish drinking water considering chronic health effects

This paper presents a novel scoring system which facilitates a relative ranking of pesticide risk to human health arising from contaminated drinking water. This method was developed to identify risky pesticides to better inform monitoring programmes and risk assessments. Potential risk was assessed considering pesticide use, chronic human health effects and environmental fate. Site-specific soil conditions, such as soil erodibility, hydrologic group, soil depth, clay, sand, silt, and organic carbon content of soil, were incorporated to demonstrate how pesticide fate can be influenced by the areas in which they are used. The indices of quantity of use, consequence and likelihood of exposure, hazard score and quantity-weighted hazard score were used to describe the level of concern that should be attributed to a pesticide. Metabolite toxicity and persistence were also considered in a separate scoring to highlight the contribution metabolites make to overall pesticide risk. This study presents two sets of results for 63 pesticides in an Irish case study, (1) risk scores calculated for the parent compounds only and (2) a combined pesticide-metabolite risk score. In both cases the results are assessed for two locations with differing soil and hydrological properties. The method developed in this paper can be adapted by pesticide users to assess and compare pesticide risk at site level using pesticide hazard scores. Farm advisors, water quality monitors, and catchment managers can apply this method to screen pesticides for human health risk at a regional or national level.

Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Groundwater of Hainan Island Using the Monte Carlo Simulation Coupled with the APCS/MLR Model

Groundwater is a significant component of water resources, but drinking groundwater with excessive heavy metals (HMs) is harmful to human health. Currently, quantitative source apportionment and probabilistic health risk assessment of HMs in groundwater are relatively limited. In this study, 60 groundwater samples containing seven HMs were collected from Hainan Island and analyzed by the coupled absolute principal component scores/multiple linear regression (APCS/MLR), the health risk assessment (HRA) and the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) to quantify the pollution sources of HMs and the health risks. The results show that the high-pollution-value areas of HMs are mainly located in the industry-oriented western region, but the pollution level by HMs in the groundwater in the study area is generally low. The main sources of HMs in the groundwater are found to be the mixed sources of agricultural activities and traffic emissions (39.16%), industrial activities (25.57%) and natural sources (35.27%). Although the non-carcinogenic risks for adults and children are negligible, the carcinogenic risks are at a high level. Through analyzing the relationship between HMs, pollution sources, and health risks, natural sources contribute the most to the health risks, and Cr is determined as the priority control HM. This study emphasizes the importance of quantitative evaluation of the HM pollution sources and probabilistic health risk assessment, which provides an essential basis for water pollution prevention and control in Hainan Island.

Urea/sodium hydroxide pretreatments enhance decomposition of maize straw in soils and sorption of straw residues toward herbicides

Because of the rigid crystalline structure and recalcitrant components, maize straw returned is slowly decomposed in soils. Straw residues are substantially accumulated in soils and pose detrimental impacts to crop plantation. Here we report the pretreatments of urea and NaOH (USH) to enhance maize straw decomposition in the field. The USH reagents interacted synergistically to destruct straw, mainly through breaking the rigid hydrogen bonding network and chemically hydrolyzing recalcitrant lignin. The synergy was evident for the USH reagents containing 6-8% urea and 0.1-1% NaOH under various temperature conditions (-20 °C to 25 °C). The USH (7%/0.1%) pretreatment resulted in notable enhancement (37%) of straw decomposition in the field within 6 months, superior to current biological-based treatments (6-28%). Moreover, this pretreatment posed no influence on the adsorption of straw residues collected at the early stage of decomposition (27 days) toward five commonly used herbicides. Those straw residues collected on 67 days and later exhibited high adsorption capacity, indicated by 0.5- to 4-folded increases in K_d values. Additionally, the impacts to soil pH and bacterial/fungal community were negligible. The USH pretreatments thus have practical interests in mitigating accumulation of straw residues in straw-returned soils.

Tritium as a Tracer of Leachate Contamination in Groundwater: A Brief Review of Tritium Anomalies Method

Environmental isotopes are essential in hydrogeological studies, thanks to their contribution to the understanding of aquifers dynamics, vulnerability, water resources assessment, and management issues. The environmental isotopic approach plays a vital role in tracing the hydrological cycle and identifying various sources of contamination in the environment and gives independent information concerning what can be determined by a traditional hydrogeological study. Even in the framework of COP-26, isotopes have been indicated as fingerprints of climate change and therefore suitable for the evaluation of water balance and assessment of processes involved therein; in pollution studies they are used as fundamental support of traditional geochemical measures. Tritium, in particular, has been used since the 1960s to identify potential leaks in the containment walls of waste disposal sites, since its presence in the leachate (at very high levels in some cases) depends on the incorrect waste disposal of some peculiar items. Its use as a tracer of pollution by landfills is highlighted and emphasized by the very low concentrations of tritium in the natural environment. By comparing tritium content of leachate to that of water downflow from the waste disposal site, it is therefore possible to establish with a good success rate whether leachate have migrated or not out of the landfill, in the surrounding environment. An additional potential of tritium is to give a prompt indication of pollution risk in the environment indicating leaching even before the chemical indicator of pollution can be detected. This article wants to provide a contribution to the scientific community, collecting all the existing research in this field and providing data and benchmarks about this method, in particular stressing the role of tritium as an indicator of leachate transfer out of waste disposal sites.

Multiple pesticides in lentic small water bodies: Exposure, ecotoxicological risk, and contamination origin

Lentic small water bodies (LSWB) are a highly valuable landscape element with important ecosystem services and benefits for humans and the environment. However, data about their pesticide contamination dynamic and the associated ecotoxicological effects are scarce. To overcome these knowledge gaps, five LSWBs located in agricultural fields in Northern Germany were studied during the spring pesticide application period (April to July 2018) and the concentrations of 94 pesticides were measured in weekly intervals. The goals of this study were to observe the trends of pesticide contamination during the application period, assess the ecotoxicity of the contamination, and assign the findings to temporal and spatial origins. Samples contained pesticide concentrations between 0.12 and 4.83 μg L^-1 as sums. High detection frequencies (81% of samples) and concentrations (max 1.2 μg L^-1) were observed for metazachlor transformation products. Contamination from multiple pesticides was detected with up to 25 compounds per sample and a maximum of 37 compounds per LSWB during the entire sampling period. High toxicities for algae and macrophytes were recorded using toxic units (TU) of -0.2 to -3.5. TUs for invertebrates were generally lower than for algae/macrophytes (-2.7 to -5.2) but were also recorded at levels with ecological impacts. Pesticide detections were separated into four categories to assign them to different temporal and spatial origins. Pesticides from the spring (5-11%) and the previous autumn (0-36%) application periods were detected in the LSWB. Some pesticides could be related to the application of the previous crop on the same field (0-39%), but most of the compounds (44-85%) were not related to the crop management in the last two years on the respective LSWB fields. The relevance of different input pathways is still unknown. Particularly, the effect of long-distance transport needs to be clarified to protect aquatic biota in LSWBs.

A global systematic review of the concentrations of Malathion in water matrices: Meta-analysis, and probabilistic risk assessment

Pesticide applications and the proximity of land use to water matrices have resulted in discharges of pollutants including Malathion -one of the most widely used organophosphorus pesticides- to water resources such as marine, freshwater, and under groundwater. Exposure to malathion through consumption of contaminated water may cause deleterious health effects on consumers. Determining the amount of pesticides used on farms can play an important role in preventing potential toxicity and pollution of nearby aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis is focused on evaluating the concentrations of Malathion in water resources while considering probabilistic health risk assessment. The international databases of Scopus, Embase, and PubMed were investigated to evaluate the related articles from January 01, 1968 to March 25, 2021. Thirty-four articles containing 206 samples from 15 countries were included. A meta-analysis of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk assessments for Malathion was also performed. To determine uncertainty intervals, a Monte-Carlo simulation was conducted. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the rankings of Malathion pollution (from the most to the least) were: drinking water > surface waters > groundwaters. Moreover, the results of the risk assessments confirm that there is no non-carcinogenic risk for any of the study areas. The carcinogenic risk assessment was within the limit for the countries under this study, except for Ethiopia that was slightly over the limit as well as Iran, and Mexico had high carcinogenic risk.

Determination of chlorothalonil metabolites in soil and water samples

Pesticide metabolites are frequently detected in groundwater at concentrations often exceeding those of their parent pesticides. A well-known example is the metabolites of chlorothalonil, a non-systematic, broad spectrum fungicide. Some of the chlorothalonil metabolites occur frequently and at elevated concentrations in groundwater, which is why the use of chlorothalonil was recently banned in the European Union. To estimate the long-term evolution of the concentration of the chlorothalonil metabolites in groundwater after this ban, it is important to know if metabolite residues in soil and unsaturated zone can affect the concentrations in groundwater. We developed and validated a method for the determination of 5 chlorothalonil metabolites in soil (R471811, R417888, SYN507900, SYN548580 and R611968), including those which are frequently detected in groundwater. The developed protocols, based on a solid phase extraction approach (for R471811, R417888, SYN507900, SYN548580) or a QuEChERS approach (for R611968) followed by UHPLC-MS/MS analysis, provided excellent sensitivity (LOQ of 0.5 µg/kg for all metabolites), precision (RSD<10 % at low, medium and high concentrations) and accuracy (84-115 %). In addition, we developed a simple but highly sensitive (LOQ of 5-10 ng/L) direct-injection method for the analysis of these 5 metabolites in water to compare their occurrence in soil and groundwater. The application of these methods to agricultural soil samples and groundwater samples showed that the detection frequency of the 5 chlorothalonil metabolites in soil and groundwater seems to be inversed and dependent on their sorption coefficient. The latter might control the amount of the chlorothalonil metabolites which is retained in the soil or which leaches towards groundwater. Our results provide insights to estimate the retention of the different chlorothalonil metabolites in soil and unsaturated zone and therefore, to assess the influence of the soil and unsaturated zone on the long-term concentration evolution of these metabolites in groundwater.

Occurrence, human health, and ecotoxicological risk assessment of pesticides in surface waters of the River Nile's Rosetta Branch, Egypt

In Egypt, the shortage of freshwater resources and their pollution constitutes a growing concern. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to (i) monitor the occurrence and spatiotemporal variations of 100 pesticides in surface water samples collected monthly (from July 2018 to June 2019) from El-Rahawy, Sabal, and Tala sampling sites along the Rosetta branch of the River Nile in Egypt, (ii) identify potential non-carcinogenic health risks for the local people through the lifetime consumption of contaminated drinking water, and (iii) perform an ecological risk assessment of aquatic organisms upon exposure to pesticides detected in surface waters based on the risk quotients (RQs) method. Of the 100 pesticides analyzed, 22 belonging to 11 chemical families were detected, and 75.5% of surface water samples were contaminated with one or more pesticide residues. The most frequently detected pesticide was malathion (57%), followed by chlorpyrifos (54%), atrazine (23%), and carbendazim (20%). Spatial distribution showed that the El-Rahawy site had the highest pesticide load (38.47 μg/L), and Sabal had the lowest (16.29 μg/L). Temporal variations revealed that the highest total pesticide concentrations were detected in summer (27.98 μg/L) compared to spring (23.16 μg/L), winter (19.18 μg/L), and autumn (11.85 μg/L). For non-carcinogenic risks of pesticides detected in surface water, the target hazard quotient (THQ) values were less than one. This implies that there is no potential human risk from exposure to drinking water at the sites under study. However, 13 pesticides presented high-risk quotients (RQ > 1), posing potential ecological risks to aquatic organisms.

Occurrence of pesticides and their transformation products in headwater streams: Contamination status and effect of ponds on contaminant concentrations

In France, more than 90% of monitored watercourses are contaminated with pesticides. This high contamination level increases at the head of agricultural watersheds, where dilution capacities are low and transport from treated lands is direct. Ponds, numerous around headwater streams, could provide additional protection against pesticide pollution. Because of their long hydraulic residence time and large water volumes, they mitigate pesticide concentrations between upstream and downstream rivers. However, pesticide transformation products may also be responsible for the degradation of environments, owing to their presence at high concentrations and their persistence, but related data are scarce, particularly because of their high level of molecular diversity. We first reported on the state of water contamination in agricultural headwater streams, based on high frequency water sampling. Analysis of 67 molecules (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS) showed pesticides and pesticide transformation product mixtures of up to 29 different compounds in one sample. Regardless of the sampling location, transformation products represented at least 50% of the detected compounds. Then, we demonstrated the capacity of a pond to reduce contaminant concentrations in downstream rivers for 90% of the detected compounds. Upstream from this pond, environmental quality or ecotoxicological standards were exceeded during sampling, with pesticide and transformation product sum concentrations of up to 27 μg/L. Downstream from the study pond, few exceedances were observed, with a maximum total concentration of 2.2 μg/L, reflecting significant water quality improvement.

Further Discussion on the Influence Radius of a Pumping Well: A Parameter with Little Scientific and Practical Significance That Can Easily Be Misleading

To facilitate understanding and calculation, hydrogeologists have introduced the influence radius. This parameter is now widely used, not only in the theoretical calculation and reasoning of well flow mechanics, but also in guiding production practice, and it has become an essential parameter in hydrogeology. However, the reasonableness of this parameter has always been disputed. This paper discusses the nature of the influence radius and the problems of its practical application based on mathematical reasoning and analogy starting from the Dupuit formula and Thiem formula. It is found that the influence radius is essentially the distance in the time–distance problem in physics; therefore, it is a function of time and velocity and is influenced by hydrogeological conditions and pumping conditions. Additionally, the influence radius is a variable and is essentially different from the hydrogeological parameters reflecting the natural properties of aquifers such as the porosity, specific yield, and hydraulic conductivity. Furthermore, the parameterized influence radius violates the continuity principle of fluids. In reality, there are no infinite horizontal aquifers, and most aquifers are replenished from external sources, which is very different from theory. The stable or seemingly stable groundwater level observed in practice is simply a coincidence that occurs under the influence of various practical factors, which cannot be considered to explain the rationality of applying this parameter in production calculations. Therefore, the influence radius cannot be used to evaluate the sustainable water supply capacity of aquifers, nor can it be used to guide the design of groundwater pollution remediation projects, the division of water source protection areas, and the scheme of riverbank filtration wells. Various ecological and environmental problems caused by groundwater exploitation are related to misleading information from the influence radius theory. Generally, the influence radius does not have scientific or practical significance, but it can easily be misleading, particularly for non-professionals. The influence radius should not be used in the sustainable development and protection of groundwater resources, let alone in theoretical models. From the perspective of regional overall planning, the calculation and evaluation of sustainable development and the utilization of groundwater resources should be investigated in a systematic manner.

Inclusion of Pesticide Transformation Products Is Key to Estimating Pesticide Exposures and Effects in Small U.S. Streams

Improved analytical methods can quantify hundreds of pesticide transformation products (TPs), but understanding of TP occurrence and potential toxicity in aquatic ecosystems remains limited. We quantified 108 parent pesticides and 116 TPs in more than 3 700 samples from 442 small streams in mostly urban basins across five major regions of the United States. TPs were detected nearly as frequently as parents (90 and 95% of streams, respectively); 102 TPs were detected at least once and 28 were detected in >20% samples in at least one region-TPs of 9 herbicides, 2 fungicides (chlorothalonil and thiophanate-methyl), and 1 insecticide (fipronil) were the most frequently detected. TPs occurred commonly during baseflow conditions, indicating chronic environmental TP exposures to aquatic organisms and the likely importance of groundwater as a TP source. Hazard quotients based on acute aquatic-life benchmarks for invertebrates and nonvascular plants and vertebrate-centric molecular endpoints (sublethal effects) quantify the range of the potential contribution of TPs to environmental risk and highlight several TP exposure-response data gaps. A precautionary approach using equimolar substitution of parent benchmarks or endpoints for missing TP benchmarks indicates that potential aquatic effects of pesticide TPs could be underestimated by an order of magnitude or more.

Evaluation of the occurrence and fate of pesticides in a typical Mediterranean delta ecosystem (Ebro River Delta) and risk assessment for aquatic organisms

Delta ecosystems are areas of high ecologic and economic values, where wildlife commonly shares the territory with intensive agricultural activities, particularly, rice cultivation and seafood production. This work aimed at evaluating the occurrence of a wide spectrum of pesticides and transformation products in the water of irrigation and drainage channels of the Ebro River Delta (NE Spain) during the main rice-growing season, when pesticide application is at its peak. Furthermore, the impact that these contaminants may have on local ecosystems and seafood production activities was assessed. A total of 35 pesticides, mainly associated with rice cultivation, out of the 66 analyzed were detected. Bentazone, propanil, MCPA, acetamiprid, and triallate were found at the μg/L level. Cybutryne, despite being banned in the European Union, was measured for the first time in the area and at concentrations above its environmental quality standard (11-49 ng/L). Sixteen additional banned pesticides were also detected at trace levels, likely due to their desorption from soil and sediment particles. Despite its dilution when discharged into the bay, this study demonstrates that the agricultural use of pesticides may have important effects on water quality and may cause a serious hazard for aquatic non-target organisms, although other factors such as temperature and salinity may play also a relevant role. Bentazone, cybutryne, dicofol, imidacloprid, MCPA, and propanil may pose a moderate to high risk for aquatic organisms at the concentration levels measured during the rice-growing season. The co-occurrence of pesticides may result in a high risk for aquatic organisms in all sampling locations. The finding of the EU Watch List insecticides imidacloprid and acetamiprid at concentrations above their maximum acceptable method detection limit calls for control of their use and revision of their legal status.

Regulatory groundwater monitoring: Realistic residues of pinoxaden and metabolites at vulnerable locations

A bespoke groundwater monitoring programme was designed to generate a database of pinoxaden and metabolite concentrations in shallow groundwater at agricultural locations across Europe. The data generated from this programme represent a higher tier refinement of modelled exposure estimates and provide realistic information on groundwater quality at vulnerable locations which will aid plant protection product (PPP) assessment in Europe in relation to Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009. The Regulatory GeoPEARL_3.3.3 model developed by RIVM was used to estimate the vulnerability of cereal growing regions to leaching of two pinoxaden metabolites across the entire EU at a 1 km² level using 20 years of daily weather data (MARS, EU JRC). Seventy sites located within the upper 50th percentile of leaching vulnerability from this modelling exercise, crop density and shallow groundwater were selected for monitoring groundwater. Retrospective and prospective pinoxaden product applications at candidate sites were recorded and these data used to place sites in the distribution for Europe. The 70 sites all fulfil the site assessment criteria and have no confining layers which may prevent or delay leaching. All sites equipped with groundwater wells had a minimum of two pinoxaden applications in the preceding four years to cereal crops. A total of 1326 samples were analysed from up to 90 down hydraulic gradient wells at 70 locations between June 2015 and July 2018. Results indicate that pinoxaden and pinoxaden metabolites are very unlikely to reach shallow groundwater at concentrations greater than 0.1 μg/L for relevant metabolites, or 10 μg/L for non-relevant metabolites, respectively (Sanco/221/2000-rev.10). Over 38 months of groundwater monitoring the annual average and 90^th percentile for pinoxaden or its metabolites never exceeded 0.1 μg/L and it is proposed that these data infer that exposure to these metabolites is minimal.

Spatiotemporal evolution of groundwater nitrate nitrogen levels and potential human health risks in the Songnen Plain, Northeast China

As one of the most widespread pollutants worldwide, nitrogen has long been a concern in the environment, including groundwater. However, due to the limitations of investigations and study progress, there is still a poor understanding of groundwater nitrogen pollution and its potential effects on human health in many areas, particularly in developing countries. The spatiotemporal evolution of groundwater nitrate nitrogen levels and potential human health risks in the Songnen Plain, Northeast China were comprehensively studied based on both our own test data and available published data that were collected by us over a study period from 1995 to 2015. Groundwater nitrate nitrogen concentrations exhibited significant temporal and spatial differences: there was an increasing trend with time; and the distribution of high concentration areas expanded from the central and western areas to the east with time. The similar pattern existed in the potential health risks posed to the residents considering the two exposure pathways including drinking water and dermal contact. The effects of groundwater nitrate nitrogen on human health depend on the nitrate concentration but there were also age differences, namely, in the order of infants > children > adult females ≈ adult males, according to the hazard quotient (HQ) used in the human health risk assessment (HHRA) model. The spatiotemporal evolution of groundwater nitrate nitrogen levels and potential human health risks indicate that the issue of nitrogen pollution in groundwater in the study area is worsening and needs further attention. The drivers that increased nitrate nitrogen concentrations in the groundwater of the study area were the increased fertilizer use due to the increased cultivated land area and implementation of a land fertility policy by the local government. It should be acknowledged that the results have uncertainties that not only come from the layout of sampling points and selection of spatial interpolation methods but also come from the parameter settings in the assessment model and assumptions of drinking water scenarios. However, the conclusions still have important reference value for groundwater pollution control and management and human health risk supervision and early warning.
