Abstract
Apparent temperature (AT) is a composite index that combines ambient temperature, humidity, wind speed and other meteorological factors, and reflects heat perception more accurately than raw temperature. This is the first study to investigate the association between AT and CVD in rural areas of Jiuquan and Longnan, Gansu Province, China. In this study, the distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) was used to examine the exposure-response relationship between AT and the 21 days relative risk (RR) of CVD admission. The results showed that the exposure risk of the gender group in Jiuquan was opposite to that of Longnan under the influence of cold effect. Under the influence of heat effect, it has a protective effect on all groups in Jiuquan area, which is harmful to males and adults in Longnan area. The results of this study can help local governments to formulate public policies.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to explore how changes in weather contribute to an increase in hospital admissions for stroke in summer. We collected 96,509 cases of stroke hospitalization data in Tianjin from 2016 to 2022 summer, along with corresponding meteorological data. The generalized additive model and distributed lag nonlinear model were used to analyze the lag and cumulative effects of temperature on stroke hospitalization. The research results show both the cold effect and the heat effect in summer would increase the risk of hospitalization. The effect of daily maximum temperature on stroke hospitalization was immediate when the temperature was higher, and delayed when the temperature was lower. However, the risk of stroke hospitalization increased more significantly with increasing temperature than with decreasing temperature. In the presence of one or more of the following three weather changes: sharp temperature increase, sharp temperature decrease, continuous high temperature, the daily number of stroke inpatients were higher than the average in the same period. 83% of the Inpatient-heavy events within the study period were caused by a combination of dramatic temperature changes and continuous high temperatures. In 48% of Inpatient-heavy events, continuous high temperature weather above 30℃ for at least 4 consecutive days were observed. And 55% of high temperature weather was accompanied by high humidity. When the daily relative humidity was greater than 70% and the daily maximum temperature was between 26 and 28℃ or more than 34℃, or the daily maximum temperature changes over 10℃ within 48 h, the number of daily inpatients was more than 1.2 times of the average daily inpatients. More attention should be paid to the combined effects of continuous high temperature and sudden temperature changes in summer stroke prevention.

Abstract
Cardiovascular (CVD) + Respiratory diseases are recognized as the main cause of death worldwide. Fluctuations in temperature and air pollution have been reported as one of the most important causes of cardiovascular & respiratory diseases. Therefore, in the current study, we assessed the relationship between ambient air temperature and pollution on the number of total emergency hospital admission due to cardiovascular and respiratory conditions in the City of Bojnord, northeastern Iran. The meteorological data, including daily temperature, relative humidity and concentrations of five air pollutants CO, NO2, NOX SO2, and PM10 were obtained from online electronic sensors at the Bojnurd meteorological station from 21th March 2018 to 20th March 2020. Statistical analysis, penalized distributed lag non-linear method was applied using R Software. Also, sensitivity analysis test was calculated by using appropriate application. The results of the study revealed that the effect of higher and lower temperatures was observed immediately from the first day and the second week, respectively. Also result showed with increase and decrease temperature, significantly increased the risk of hospitalization by 36% (RR, 1.36; 95% CI (1), 0.95 to 1.95) and 17% (RR, 1.17; 95% CI (1), 0.88 to 1.55) until the lag 25th day, respectively. Based on the results, increasing temperature significantly increased the hospitalization rate of cardiopulmonary patients, but the effect of cold was not significant on the population as well as age and gender subgroups. Study have also proved that there is no significance correlation between air pollutant and Cardiovascular & respiratory diseases.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality worldwide, posing a significant threat to public health. Research on the relationship between CVD and temperature has primarily focused on developed urban settings, with limited studies conducted in rural regions with lower levels of development. Additionally, compared to relative risks, attributable risks can provide more information when assessing the risk of CVD hospitalizations associated with exposure to apparent temperature (AT). Apparent temperature is a composite temperature index that takes into account both meteorological factors and temperature, providing an objective reflection of human thermal sensation. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of AT on CVD hospitalization and quantifies the burden of CVD admission in the rural areas of China. We employed the distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) to estimate the relationship between AT and the relative risk (RR) of CVD hospitalization. Finally, we used attributable risk methods to quantify this relationship further.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study is to assess the effect of high temperatures on hospitalization for all causes and heat-sensitive diseases among Vietnamese farmers. METHODS The Poisson generalized linear model and distributed lag nonlinear model were used to investigate the temperature-hospitalization association for all causes and seven cause-specific disease groups. RESULTS Every 1°C increase in daily mean temperature above the threshold increased the estimated relative risk (95% CI) of all-cause hospitalization by 1.022 (0.998-1.047) at the country level, 1.047 (1.007-1.089) in the south, and 0.982 (0.958-1.006) in the north. Infectious disease hospitalization was most affected by high temperatures (1.098 [1.057-1.140]). High temperatures significantly increased the risk of all-cause hospitalization for farmers 60 years and younger in three of the six provinces. CONCLUSIONS The findings emphasized the need for health promotion programs to prevent heat-related health issues.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dermatitis caused by insects and mites, diagnosed as papular urticaria or scabies, is a common skin disease. However, there is still a lack of studies about the effects of weather and air pollution on outpatient visits for this disease. This study aims to explore the impacts of meteorological and environmental factors on daily visits of dermatitis outpatients. METHODS Analyses are conducted on a total of 43,101 outpatient visiting records during the years 2015-2020 from the largest dermatology specialist hospital in Guangzhou, China. Hierarchical cluster models based on Pearson correlation between risk factors are utilized to select regression variables. Linear regression models are fitted to identify the statistically significant associations between the risk factors and daily visits, taking into account the short-term effects of temperatures. Permutation importance is adopted to evaluate the predictive ability of these factors. RESULTS Short-term temperatures have positive associations with daily visits and exhibit strong predictive abilities. In terms of total outpatients, the one-day lagged temperature not only has a significant impact on daily visits, but also has the highest median value of permutation importance. This conclusion is robust across most subgroups except for subgroups of summer and scabies, wherein the three-day lagged temperature has a negative effect. By contrast, air pollution has insignificant associations with daily visits and exhibits weak predictive abilities. Moreover, weekdays, holidays and trends have significant impacts on daily visits, but with weak predictive abilities. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that short-term temperatures have positive associations with daily visits and exhibit strong predictive abilities. Nevertheless, air pollution has insignificant associations with daily visits and exhibits weak predictive abilities. The results of this study provide a reference for local authorities to formulate intervention measures and establish an environment-based disease early warning system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Climate change, characterized by the steady ascent of global temperatures and the escalating unpredictability of climate patterns, poses multifaceted challenges to public health worldwide. However, vulnerable groups, particularly the population affected by HIV/AIDS, have received little attention. OBJECTIVES We aimed to examine the impacts of temperature variations on AIDS-related mortality. METHODS Data on individuals with HIV/AIDS were collected from the HIV/AIDS Comprehensive Response Information Management System between 2013 and 2019. Temperature variation metrics were constructed by diurnal temperature range (DTR), temperature changes between neighboring days (TCN), and temperature variability (TV0-t). Time-stratified case-crossover design with conditional logistic regression models was used to investigate the associations between ambient temperature variations and AIDS-related mortality. RESULTS Each 1 °C elevated in DTR was linked with a 5.28 % [95 % confidence intervals (CIs): 1.61, 9.08] increment in AIDS-related mortality at a lag of 0-6 days. Stronger associations between DTR and AIDS-related mortality were observed in the married than in single, with corresponding excess ORs (%) of 5.33 (95 % CIs: 0.29, 10.62) versus 4.79 (95 % CIs: -0.50, 10.36) for 1 °C increased in DTR at lag 0-6 days. Additionally, we noticed the impact of DTR was more pronounced in the warm season, leading to a 7.32 % (95 % CIs: 0.57, 14.51) elevation in the risks of AIDS-related mortality for 1 °C increase in DTR at lag 0-6 days, while the effect value decreased to 5.16 % (95 % CIs: 0.71, 9.81) in the cold season. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicated that DTR might be a significant risk factor for AIDS-related deaths among ambient temperature variation indicators, and underscored the importance of considering temperature variability in public health interventions aimed at mitigating this risk of AIDS-related mortality.

Abstract
Purpose Temperature changes unfavorably impact on cardiovascular disease. However, the association between temperature changes and coronary artery disease (CAD) is not well documented. This study aimed to explore the association between daily mean temperature and daily CAD hospital admissions on the southeast coast of China (Fuzhou City). Methods A total of 1883 CAD patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention between 2017 and 2019 were obtained. The severity of CAD was evaluated by the Gensini score. Distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) combined with a quasi-Poisson regression model was used to examine the delayed effect between daily mean temperature and daily CAD hospital admissions. Stratified analyses were performed by Gensini score and severity of lesions. The relative risk (RR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to assess the relationship. Results Extreme cold (8°C) (RR=0.49, 95% CI: 0.25-0.99) and moderate cold (10°C) (RR=0.56, 95% CI: 0.31-0.99) daily mean temperature with a lag of 0-20 days were correlated with lower risk of daily CAD hospital admissions. Moderate heat (30°C) (RR=1.80, 95% CI: 1.01-3.20) and extreme heat (32°C) (RR=2.02, 95% CI: 1.01-4.04) daily mean temperature with a lag of 0-20 days related to a higher risk of daily CAD hospital admissions. Similar results were observed for daily mean temperature with a lag of 0-25 days. Stratified analysis showed the lagged effect of daily mean temperature (lag 0, 0-5, 0-15, 0-20, and 0-25 days) on the daily CAD hospital admissions was observed only in patients with a Gensini score ≤39 (tertile 1). Conclusion Cold temperatures may have a protective effect on daily CAD hospital admissions in the Fuzhou area, whereas hot temperatures can have an adverse effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-optimum temperatures are associated with increased risk of respiratory diseases, but the effects of apparent temperature (AT) on respiratory diseases remain to be investigated. METHODS Using daily data from 2016 to 2020 in Ganzhou, a large city in southern China, we analyzed the impact of AT on outpatient and inpatient visits for respiratory diseases. We considered total respiratory diseases and five subtypes (influenza and pneumonia, upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI), asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD]). Our analysis employed a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) combined with a generalized additive model (GAM). RESULTS We recorded 94,952 outpatients and 72,410 inpatients for respiratory diseases. We found AT significantly non-linearly associated with daily outpatient and inpatient visits for total respiratory diseases, influenza and pneumonia, and URTI, primarily during comfortable AT levels, while it was exclusively related with daily inpatient visits for LRTI and COPD. Moderate heat (32.1 °C, the 75.0th centile) was observed with a significant effect on both daily outpatient and inpatient visits for total respiratory diseases at a relative risk of 1.561 (1.161, 2.098) and 1.276 (1.027, 1.585), respectively (both P < 0.05), while the results of inpatients became insignificant with the adjustment for CO and O3. The attributable fractions in outpatients and inpatients were as follows: total respiratory diseases (24.43% and 18.69%), influenza and pneumonia (31.54% and 17.33%), URTI (23.03% and 32.91%), LRTI (37.49% and 30.00%), asthma (9.83% and 3.39%), and COPD (30.67% and 10.65%). Stratified analyses showed that children ≤5 years old were more susceptible to moderate heat than older participants. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, our results indicated moderate heat increase the risk of daily outpatient and inpatient visits for respiratory diseases, especially among children under the age of 5.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major threat to public health worldwide. The relationship between CVD and temperature has been widely reported in developed countries and regions. However, there are few studies of severe CVD in poor rural areas of developing countries. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the relationship between CVD and apparent temperature (AT) in a rural area of Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, China. Daily CVD admission data and meteorological data were collected from Linxia between 2014 and 2015. The media of AT was used as the reference temperature to estimate the cumulative relative risk (RR) of CVD admission. The distributed lag non-linear models were used to examine the association between AT and cumulative RR of CVD admission at lag 0-21 days. In Linxia, high AT (20 °C) had a persistent adverse effect on cumulative RR of CVD admissions, and the RR increased with increasing lag days. Cold (- 10 °C) had a protective effect on the first and later lag days (lag 0-14 and lag 0-21). Adults (aged < 65 years) and females were more susceptible to the effects of heat than males and the elderly (aged ≥ 65 years). In Linxia, China, extremely high AT is an important risk factor for CVD hospitalizations in suburban and rural populations.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to investigate the association between multiple living environmental factors and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). METHODS AND RESULTS This study was conducted on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), with 12 489 subjects in the cross-sectional study and 7932 subjects in the 7-year follow-up. Living environmental factors included ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5), indoor fuel use, tap water use, and residence type. Logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard regression models were applied to explore the association between living environmental risk factors and CVD events in a cross-sectional and a cohort analysis, respectively. Compared with subjects in the low-risk groups, those in the middle-risk (odd ratio [OR], 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.203, 0.943-1.534) and high-risk groups (OR, 95% CI: 1.616, 1.259-2.074) showed increased risks of CVD prevalence when considering the combined effects of their living environment. During the follow-up, similar associations were observed (hazard ratio [HR], 1.541, 95% CI [1.142-2.080] for the high-risk group; HR 1.296, 95% CI [0.968-1.736] for the middle-risk group); P for trend = 0.003). CONCLUSION An overall poor living environmental quality is a potential risk factor for CVD. Future studies should focus more on the effects of exposure to multiple factors.

Abstract
Many United States (US) cities are experiencing urban heat islands (UHIs) and climate change-driven temperature increases. Extreme heat increases cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, yet little is known about how this association varies with UHI intensity (UHII) within and between cities. We aimed to identify the urban populations most at-risk of and burdened by heat-related CVD morbidity in UHI-affected areas compared to unaffected areas. ZIP code-level daily counts of CVD hospitalizations among Medicare enrollees, aged 65-114, were obtained for 120 US metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) between 2000 and 2017. Mean ambient temperature exposure was estimated by interpolating daily weather station observations. ZIP codes were classified as low and high UHII using the first and fourth quartiles of an existing surface UHII metric, weighted to each have 25% of all CVD hospitalizations. MSA-specific associations between ambient temperature and CVD hospitalization were estimated using quasi-Poisson regression with distributed lag non-linear models and pooled via multivariate meta-analyses. Across the US, extreme heat (MSA-specific 99th percentile, on average 28.6 °C) increased the risk of CVD hospitalization by 1.5% (95% CI: 0.4%, 2.6%), with considerable variation among MSAs. Extreme heat-related CVD hospitalization risk in high UHII areas (2.4% [95% CI: 0.4%, 4.3%]) exceeded that in low UHII areas (1.0% [95% CI: -0.8%, 2.8%]), with upwards of a 10% difference in some MSAs. During the 18-year study period, there were an estimated 37,028 (95% CI: 35,741, 37,988) heat-attributable CVD admissions. High UHII areas accounted for 35% of the total heat-related CVD burden, while low UHII areas accounted for 4%. High UHII disproportionately impacted already heat-vulnerable populations; females, individuals aged 75-114, and those with chronic conditions living in high UHII areas experienced the largest heat-related CVD impacts. Overall, extreme heat increased cardiovascular morbidity risk and burden in older urban populations, with UHIs exacerbating these impacts among those with existing vulnerabilities.

Abstract
It has been reported that cardiovascular disease (CVD) has become one of the major threats to global public health and is associated with climate change. Several previous studies have shown the influence of ambient temperature on CVD, but lack some evidence for the short-term effect of diurnal temperature range (DTR) on CVD mortality in northeast China. This is the first study to assess the correlation between DTR and CVD mortality in Hulunbuir located in northeast China. Daily CVD mortality data and meteorological data were collected from 2014 to 2020. A quasi-Poisson generalized linear regression with a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was applied to exploring the short-term impact of DTR on CVD mortality. Stratified analyses by gender, age, and season were conducted and the short-term impacts of extremely high DTR on CVD mortality were investigated. In this study, a total of 21,067 CVD mortality cases were recorded in Hulunbuir, China from 2014 to 2020. Compared to the reference value (11.20 [Formula: see text]C, 50[Formula: see text] percentile), a "U-shaped" non-linear relationship between DTR and CVD mortality was observed, and extremely high DTR increased the risk of CVD mortality. The short-term effect of extremely high DTR occurred immediately and lasted up to 6 days. In addition, the male and the age [Formula: see text] 65 groups were more likely to be affected by extremely high DTR compared with the female and the age < 65 groups, respectively. The results also showed that extremely high DTR in cold season had a more adverse effect on CVD mortality than warm season. This study suggests that extremely high DTR for cold season should be paid enough attention to for residents in northeast China. The male and the age [Formula: see text] 65 groups were more vulnerable to the impacts of DTR. The study results may provide some suggestions for decision-making by local public health authorities to avoid the adverse impacts of high DTR, and improve the health of residents, especially vulnerable groups in cold season.

Abstract
While climate change and population ageing are expected to increase the exposure and vulnerability to extreme heat events, there is emerging evidence suggesting that social inequalities would additionally magnify the projected health impacts. However, limited evidence exists on how social determinants modify heat-related cardiovascular morbidity. This study aims to explore the association between heat and the incidence of first acute cardiovascular event (CVE) in adults in Madrid between 2015 and 2018, and to assess how social context and other individual characteristics modify the estimated association. We performed a case-crossover study using the individual information collected from electronic medical records of 6514 adults aged 40-75 living in Madrid city that suffered a first CVE during summer (June-September) between 2015 and 2018. We applied conditional logistic regression with a distributed lag non-linear model to analyse the heat-CVE association. Estimates were expressed as Odds Ratio (OR) for extreme heat (at 97.5th percentile of daily maximum temperature distribution), compared to the minimum risk temperature. We performed stratified analyses by specific diagnosis, sex, age (40-64, 65-75), country of origin, area-level deprivation, and presence of comorbidities. Overall, the risk of suffering CVE increased by 15.3% (OR: 1.153 [95%CI 1.010-1.317]) during extreme heat. Males were particularly more affected (1.248, [1.059-1.471]), vs 1.039 [0.810-1.331] in females), and non-Spanish population (1.869 [1.28-2.728]), vs 1.084 [0.940-1.250] in Spanish). Similar estimates were found by age groups. We observed a dose-response pattern across deprivation levels, with larger risks in populations with higher deprivation (1.228 [1.031-1.462]) and almost null association in the lowest deprivation group (1.062 [0.836-1.349]). No clear patterns of larger vulnerability were found by presence of comorbidity. We found that heat unequally increased the risk of suffering CVE in adults in Madrid, affecting mainly males and deprived populations. Local measures should pay special attention to vulnerable populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Substantial evidence suggests that non-optimal temperatures can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and morbidity; however, limited studies have reported inconsistent results for hospital admissions depending on study locations, which also lack national-level investigations on cause-specific CVDs. METHODS We performed a two-stage meta-regression analysis to examine the short-term associations between temperature and acute CVD hospital admissions by specific categories [i.e., ischemic heart disease (IHD), heart failure (HF), and stroke] in 47 prefectures of Japan from 2011 to 2018. First, we estimated the prefecture-specific associations using a time-stratified case-crossover design with a distributed lag nonlinear model. We then used a multivariate meta-regression model to obtain national average associations. RESULTS During the study period, a total of 4,611,984 CVD admissions were reported. We found cold temperatures significantly increased the risk of total CVD admissions and cause-specific categories. Compared with the minimum hospitalization temperature (MHT) at the 98th percentile of temperature (29.9 °C), the cumulative relative risks (RRs) for cold (5th percentile, 1.7 °C) and heat (99th percentile, 30.5 °C) on total CVD were 1.226 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.195, 1.258] and 1.000 (95% CI: 0.998, 1.002), respectively. The RR for cold on HF [RR = 1.571 (95% CI: 1.487, 1.660)] was higher than those of IHD [RR = 1.119 (95% CI: 1.040, 1.204)] and stroke [RR = 1.107 (95% CI: 1.062, 1.155)], comparing to their cause-specific MHTs. We also observed that extreme heat increased the risk of HF with RR of 1.030 (95% CI: 1.007, 1.054). Subgroup analysis showed that the age group ≥85 years was more vulnerable to these non-optimal temperature risks. CONCLUSIONS This study indicated that cold and heat exposure could increase the risk of hospital admissions for CVD, varying depending on the cause-specific categories, which may provide new evidence to reduce the burden of CVD.

Abstract
Background The associations between ambient temperature and influenza-like illness (ILI) have been investigated in previous studies. However, they have inconsistent results. The purpose of this study was to estimate the effect of ambient temperature on ILI in Shandong Province, China. Methods Weekly ILI surveillance and meteorological data over 2014-2017 of the Shandong Province were collected from the Shandong Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the China Meteorological Data Service Center, respectively. A distributed lag non-linear model was adopted to estimate the city-specific temperature-ILI relationships, which were used to pool the regional-level and provincial-level estimates through a multivariate meta-analysis. Results There were 911,743 ILI cases reported in the study area between 2014 and 2017. The risk of ILI increased with decreasing weekly ambient temperature at the provincial level, and the effect was statistically significant when the temperature was <-1.5°C (RR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.00-1.54). We found that the relationship between temperature and ILI showed an L-shaped curve at the regional level, except for Southern Shandong (S-shaped). The risk of ILI was influenced by cold, with significant lags from 2.5 to 3 weeks, and no significant effect of heat on ILI was found. Conclusion Our findings confirm that low temperatures significantly increased the risk of ILI in the study area. In addition, the cold effect of ambient temperature may cause more risk of ILI than the hot effect. The findings have significant implications for developing strategies to control ILI and respond to climate change.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been the major contributor to global mortality and disability especially in undeveloped and developing countries/areas with severer air pollutions, studies are quite limited and evidence is insufficient of short-term main air pollutants exposure on health burden of CVD hospital admissions in those regions particularly through direct costs. METHOD Based on an analysis of 30,959 CVD hospital admissions among suburban farmers from 2018 to 2019 through multiple linear regression (MLR), our study evaluated the impact of main air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, SO2, CO, NO2 and O3) exposure on number of cases, length of stay (LOS) and costs of CVD hospital admissions in Pingliang, China. RESULTS Concentration of SO2 and O3 rising from a low level was found to lower the costs, LOS and daily cases of CVD hospital admissions and PM2.5, PM10, CO and NO2 were found to aggravate the burden. Besides, the NO2 could put more economic stress on those CVD patients in Pingliang (China) which implies that some improvements could be done on public medical insurance policy and benefit local suburban farmers by strengthening the supports on specific drugs and therapies. CONCLUSIONS More efforts should be made to lower the concentration of air pollution by coordinated control managements even in a low-level scenario. Concentration levels and interactions between main air pollutants may play an important role in air pollution-induced CVD health burden. Future research is needed to explore more evidence in different areas, especially with low-level SO2 effects.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has become a severe public health and social issue in China. However, in northwest China, evidence on the association between ambient temperature and CVD hospitalisations in suburban farmers is somewhat limited. We collected CVD hospitalisations and meteorological data (2012-2015) in Zhangye suburbs and assessed the temperature-related risk and burden of admission by fitting a distributed lag nonlinear model to probe the relationship between ambient temperature and CVD hospitalisations among farmers in suburban northwest China. The results show that 23,921 cases of CVD admissions were recorded from 2012 to 2015. There was a "U-shaped" association between temperature and hospitalisations. Compared with the minimum admissions temperature (MAT) at 15.3 °C, the cumulative relative risk (RR) over lag 0-21 days was 1.369 (95% CI 0.980-1.911) for extreme cold temperature (1st percentile, -15 °C), 1.353 (95% CI 1.063-1.720) for moderate cold (5th percentile, -11 °C), 1.415 (95% CI 1.117-1.792) for extreme heat (99th percentile, 26 °C), and 1.241 (95% CI 1.053-1.464) for moderate heat (95th percentile, 24 °C). Female farmers were more susceptible to low and high temperatures than male farmers. Farmers aged ≥ 65 years old were more sensitive to low temperatures, while farmers aged < 65 years old were more sensitive to high temperatures. A total of 13.4% (3,208 cases) of the hospitalisation burden for CVD were attributed to temperature exposure, with the moderate range of temperatures accounting for the most significant proportion (12.2%). Ambient temperature, primarily moderate temperatures, might be an essential factor for cardiovascular-related hospitalisations among farmers in suburban northwest China.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading threat to global public health. Although associations between temperature and CVD hospitalization have been suggested for developed countries, limited evidence is available for developing countries or rural residents. Moreover, the effect of apparent temperature (AT) on the spectrum of cause-specific CVDs remains unknown. Based on 2,024,147 CVD hospitalizations for rural residents from eight regions in Fujian Province, China, during 2010-2016, a quasi-Poisson regression with distributed lag non-linear model was fitted to estimate the AT effect on daily CVD hospitalization for each region, and then pooled in a meta-regression that included regional indicators related to rural residents. Stratified analyses were performed according to the cause of hospitalization, sex and age groups. Finally, we calculated the fraction of CVD hospitalizations attributable to AT, as a reflection of the burden associated with AT. The heat effect appeared at lag 0-1 days, with 19% (95% CI, 11-26%) increased risk of CVD hospitalization, which was worse for ischemic heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmias and ischemic stroke. The decreased AT was associated with increase of hemorrhagic stroke at lag 0-28 days. People aged 65 and above suffered more from the heat effect on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Regions with a lower gross value of agricultural production, rural residents' per capita net income, number of air conditioners and water heaters were more susceptible. A large number of hospitalizations were attributable to heat for most subcategories. High AT level increased CVD hospitalization, and the subcategories had different susceptibilities. The effects were modified by individual and regional characteristics. These findings have important implications for the development of targeted interventions and for hospital service planning.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No studies focused on impact of temperature changes between neighboring days (TCN) on cardiovascular disease (CVD) hospital admissions among suburban farmers although CVD has been the main cause to global mortality and disability especially in undeveloped and developing countries/areas. METHOD Daily data of CVD hospital admissions on suburban farmers and daily data of meteorology in Qingyang (China) were collected during 2011-2015. A distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was applied to explore the exposure-response relations and lagged effects between TCN and CVD hospital admissions with stratified analyses by age and gender. Extreme low TCN effects and burden analysis were conducted. RESULTS Based on 25,984 cases in Qingyang (China) during 2011-2015 among suburban farmers, we found that, first, nonlinear relationship was observed between TCN and CVD hospital admissions and adverse impact in negative TCN (temperature dropping between neighboring days) while protective effect in positive TCN (temperature rising between neighboring days) were discovered; third, during lag0-27, the cumulative relative risk (RR) for extreme low TCN (5th percentile, - 3.5 °C) and extreme high TCN (95th percentile, 3 °C) was 29.55 (95% CI 4.709-185.436) and 0.040 (95% CI 0.009-0.169), respectively; fourth, the age < 65 and females were more vulnerable to negative TCN than the age ≥ 65 and males among suburban farmers, respectively; last, moderate low TCN contributed the most fractions and numbers on CVD hospital admissions. CONCLUSIONS Among Qingyang suburban farmers in Northwest China, negative TCN should be paid more attention.

Abstract
Climate has received an increasing attention due to its adverse effects on human health, but the effects on the urinary system are still short of enough evidence. Therefore, we carry out this study to analyze the relationship between meteorological factors and urinary system health in arid areas of western China. In this study, the daily numbers of outpatients with the urinary system diseases from multiple hospitals in three cities in Gansu province (Lanzhou, Zhangye, and Tianshui city) were collected and used for analysis. The distributed lag non-linear models (DLNM) with a quasi-Poisson distribution were used to estimate the associations between meteorological factors and daily outpatients for urinary system diseases in these three cities, and then a multivariate meta-analysis was applied to pool the estimates of city-specific effects. We found that the ambient temperature (AT) and relative humidity (RH) were significantly associated with the outpatient visits of urinary system diseases. The effects of meteorological factors on outpatients with urinary system diseases for both males and females were statistically significant at different lag days. The higher AT and lower RH were associated with the higher risk of urinary system diseases. We also observed substantial lag effects of meteorological factors on outpatients for both males and females. Among all disease types, renal tubule-interstitial diseases had the strongest relationships with meteorological factors. Our results indicate that the higher AT and lower RH may increase the outpatient visits for urinary system diseases, with significant lag effects in semi-arid areas.

Abstract
Acute exacerbation of chronic obstruction pulmonary disease (AECOPD) as a respiratory disease, is considered to be related to air pollution by more and more studies. However, the evidence on how air pollution affect the incidence of AECOPD and whether there are population differences is still insufficient. Therefore, we select PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO2, CO, and O3 as representatives combined with daily AECOPD admission data from 1 January 2015 to 26 June 2016 in the rural areas of Qingyang, northwestern China to explore the associations of air pollution with AECOPD. Based on a time-stratified case-crossover design, we constructed a distributed lag nonlinear model to qualify the single and cumulative lagged effects of air pollution on AECOPD. Stratified related risks by sex and age were also reported. The cumulative exposure-response curves were approximately linear for PM2.5, "V"-shaped for PM10, "U"-shaped for NO2 and inverted-"V" for SO2, CO and O3. Exposure to high-PM2.5 (42 μg/m3), high-PM10 (91 μg/m3), high-SO2 (58 μg/m3), low-NO2 (12 μg/m3), and high-CO (1.55 mg/m3) increased the risk of AECOPD. Females aged 15-64 were more susceptible under extreme concentrations of PM2.5, SO2, CO, and low-PM10 than other subgroups. In addition, adults aged 15-64 were more sensitive to extreme concentrations of NO2 compared with the elderly ≥65 years old, while the latter were more sensitive to high-PM10. High-SO2, high-NO2, and extreme concentrations of PM2.5 had the greatest effects on the day of exposure, while low-SO2 and low-CO had lagged effects on AECOPD. Precautionary measures should be taken with a focus on vulnerable subgroups, to control hospitalization for AECOPD associated with air pollutants.

Abstract
Temperature has been studied in relation to many health outcomes. However, few studies have explored its effect on the risk of hospital admission for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was used to analyze associations between mean temperature, diurnal temperature range (DTR), temperature change between neighboring days (TCN), and daily admissions for RA from 2015 to 2019 in Anqing, China. Subgroup analyses based on age, gender, rheumatoid factors, and admission route were performed. In total, 1456 patients with RA were hospitalized. Regarding the cumulative-lag effects of extreme cold temperature (5th percentile = 3℃), the risks of admissions for RA were increased and highest at lag 0-11 (RR = 2.68, 95% CI: 1.23-5.86). Exposing to low (5th percentile = 1.9℃) and high (95th percentile = 14.2℃) DTRs both had increased risks of RA admission, with highest RRs of 1.40 (95% CI: 1.03-1.91) and 1.24 (95% CI: 1.0-1.53) at lag 0 day, respectively. As for TCN, the marginal risk of admission in RA patients was found when exposed to high TCN (95th percentile = 2.9℃) with the largest single-day effect at lag 10 (RR = 1.11, 95% CI: 1.01-1.23). In subgroup analyses, females were more susceptible to extreme cold temperature, low and high DTRs, and high TCN. In regard to extreme cold temperature, significant risk of hospital admission in females only appeared at lag 2 (RR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.02-2.15) and lag 0-2 (RR = 2.35, 95% CI: 1.11-4.95). It is clear that RA patients exposed to changing temperature may increase risks of admission.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), reported to relate with climate change, is the leading cause of global mortality and morbidity. Since the relevant information is quite limited from suburbs and countryside in developing and underdeveloped countries, there are no studies that focused on morbidity through diurnal temperature range (DTR) for these regions. This is the first study to evaluate the short-term effect of DTR on CVD hospital admission in suburban farmers, as well as to identify vulnerable subpopulations. Daily time series data of CVD hospital admissions on suburban farmers of Qingyang, China, and meteorological data from 2011 to 2015 were collected, and a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) combined with a quasi-Poisson generalized additive regression model (GAM) was used to examine the exposure-response relationship and delayed effect between DTR and CVD hospital admissions. Stratified analyses by age and gender were performed and extreme DTR effects were examined. Non-linear relation between DTR and CVD hospital admissions was observed, and whether DTR lower or higher than the reference (13 °C, 50th percentile) had adverse effect while lower DTR have slightly higher impact. Also, both extreme low and extreme high DTR had adverse effect. Besides, adults (age < 65) and males were more vulnerable to the effects of DTR compared with the old (age ≥ 65) and females, respectively. This study provides evidence that not only high DTR but also low DTR had adverse effects on CVD which should be paid attention to. Adults and males were more vulnerable among suburban farmers. The results are inconsistent with the studies from urban and indicate differences between urban and suburban residents. Multiple factors such as occupations, risk awareness, and lifestyles could have a significant influence on CVD morbidity, and further study is needed to explore more evidence.

Abstract
The influence of elevated air temperatures recorded in various urban microenvironments in adversely impacting biologically relevant disease end points has not yet been extensively tackled. This study is a post hoc analysis of the TEMP pilot trial, a randomized 2 × 2 cross-over trial that examined changes in metabolic and stress hormonal profiles of healthy adults in two settings (urban vs. rural) with distinctly different climatological characteristics during the Mediterranean summer. This analysis aimed to study the association between the 24-h personal air or skin temperature sensor measurements and the diary-based location type (indoors vs. outdoors) in urban (seaside) vs. rural (higher in altitude) microenvironments. Out of 41 eligible participants, a total of 37 participants were included in this post-hoc TEMP trial analysis. Wearable sensors recorded personal air temperature, skin temperature, and activity (as a surrogate marker of physical activity) in each setting, while a time-stamped personal diary recorded the types of indoor or outdoor activities. Temperature peaks during the 24-h sampling period were detected using a peak finding algorithm. Mixed effect logistic regression models were fitted for the odds of participant location (being indoors vs. outdoors) as a function of setting (urban vs. rural) and sensor-based personal temperature data (either raw temperature values or number of temperature peaks). During the study period (July-end of September), median [interquartile range, IQR] personal air temperature in the rural (higher altitude) settings was 1.5 °C lower than that in the urban settings (27.1 °C [25.4, 29.2] vs. 28.6 °C [27.1, 30.5], p < 0.001), being consistent with the Mediterranean climate. Median [IQR] personal air temperature in indoor (micro)environments was lower than those in outdoors (28.0 °C [26.4, 30.3] vs 28.5 °C [26.8, 30.7], p < 0.001). However, median [IQR] skin temperature was higher in indoor (micro)environments vs. outdoors (34.8 °C [34.0, 35.6] and 33.9 °C [32.9, 34.8], p < 0.001) and the number of both personal air and skin temperature peaks was higher indoors compared to outdoors (median [IQR] 3.0 [2.0,4.0] vs 1.0 [1.0,1.3], p < 0.007, for the skin sensors). A significant association between the number of temperature peaks and indoor location types was observed with either the personal air sensor (OR 3.1; 95% CI 1.2-8.2; p = 0.02) or the skin sensor (OR 3.7; 95% CI 1.4-9.9; p = 0.01), suggesting higher number of indoor air temperature fluctuations. Amidst the global climate crisis, more population health studies or personalized medicine approaches that utilize continuous tracking of individual-level air/skin temperatures in both indoor/outdoor locations would be warranted, if we were to better characterize the disease phenotype in response to climate change manifestations.

Abstract
Some studies suggested that 24-h temperature change (TC24) was one of the potential risk factors for human health. However, evidence of the short-term effect of TC24 on outpatient and emergency department (O&ED) visits and hospitalizations for cause-specific cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is still limited. The aim of this study is to explore the short-term effects of TC24 on O&ED visits and hospitalizations for CVDs in northwest China which is an area with large temperature variation. The O&ED visits records for CVDs of 3 general hospitals and the inpatient records for CVDs of 4 general hospitals were collected from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2016, in Jinchang City, northwest China. Meteorological and air pollution data were also obtained during the same study period from local meteorological monitoring station and environmental monitoring station, respectively. A generalized additive model (GAM) with Poisson regression was employed to analyze the effects of TC24 on O&ED visits and hospitalizations for CVDs. V-shaped relationship were found between TC24 and O&ED visits and hospitalizations for CVDs, including total CVD, hypertension, coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke. Stratified analysis showed that men and patients over 65 years old were more susceptible to temperature changes. The estimates in non-heating months were higher than in full year. TC24 can affect the O&ED visits and hospitalizations for CVDs in this study. This study provides useful data for policy makers to better prepare local responses to the impact of changes in temperature on population health.

Abstract
Temperature change is an important meteorological indicator reflecting weather stability. This study aimed to examine the effects of ambient temperature change on non-accidental mortality using diurnal temperature change (DTR) and temperature change between neighboring days (TCN) from two perspectives, intra-day and inter-day temperature change, and further, to explore seasonal variations of mortality, identify the susceptible population and investigate the interaction between temperature change and apparent temperature (AT). We collected daily data on cause-specific mortality, air pollutants and meteorological indicators in Shenzhen, China, from 1 January 2013 to 29 December 2017. A Quasi-Poisson generalized linear regression combined with distributed lag non-linear models (DLNMs) were conducted to estimate the effects of season on temperature change-related mortality. In addition, a non-parametric bivariate response surface model was used to explore the interaction between temperature change and AT. The cumulative effect of DTR was a U-shaped curve for non-accidental mortality, whereas the curve for TCN was nearly monotonic. The overall relative risks (RRs) of non-accidental, cardiovascular and respiratory mortality were 1.407 (95% CI: 1.233-1.606), 1.470 (95% CI: 1.220-1.771) and 1.741 (95% CI: 1.157-2.620) from exposure to extreme large DTR (99th) in cold seasons. However, no statistically significant effects were observed in warm seasons. As for TCN, the effects were higher in cold seasons than warm seasons, with the largest RR of 1.611 (95% CI: 1.384-1.876). The elderly and females were more sensitive, and low apparent temperature had a higher effect on temperature change-related non-accidental mortality. Temperature change was positively correlated with an increased risk of non-accidental mortality in Shenzhen. Both female and elderly people are more vulnerable to the potential adverse effects, especially in cold seasons. Low AT may enhance the effects of temperature change.

Abstract
Ambient temperature change is one of the risk factors of human health. Moreover, links between white blood cell counts (WBC) and diseases have been revealed in the literature. Still, we do not know of any association between ambient temperature change and WBC counts. The aim of our study is to investigate the relationship between ambient temperature change and WBC counts. We conducted this two-year population-based observational study in Kaohsiung city, recruiting voluntary community participants. Total WBC and differential counts, demographic data and health hazard habits were collected and matched with the meteorological data of air-quality monitoring stations with participants’ study dates and addresses. Generalized additive models (GAM) with penalized smoothing spline functions were performed for the trend of temperature changes and WBC counts. There were 9278 participants (45.3% male, aged 54.3 ± 5.9 years-old) included in analysis. Compared with stable weather conditions, the WBC counts were statistically higher when the one-day lag temperature changed over 2 degrees Celsius, regardless of whether colder or hotter. We found a V-shaped pattern association between WBC counts and temperature changes in GAM. The ambient temperature change was associated with WBC counts, and might imply an impact on systematic inflammation response.

Abstract
(1) Background: The health effect of temperature has become a rising public health topic. The objective of this study is to assess the association between apparent temperature and non-accidental deaths, and the mortality burden attributed to cold and heat temperature; (2) Methods: The daily data on temperature and deaths were collected from 10 cities in Thailand, Korea and China. We fitted a time-series regression with a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) to derive the health risk of temperature for each city and then pooled them to get the overall cumulative risk by multivariate meta-analysis. Additionally, we calculated the attributable fraction of deaths for heat and cold, which was defined as temperatures above and below minimum-mortality temperature (MMT); (3) Results: There are regional heterogeneities in the minimum mortality percentiles (MMP) and attributable fractions for different countries. The MMP varied from about the 5-10th percentile in Thailand to 63-93rd percentile in China and Korea. The attributable fractions of the total deaths due to short-term exposure to temperature in Asia is 7.62%, of which the cold effect (6.44%) is much higher than the heat effect (1.18%); (4) Conclusions: Our study suggested that apparent temperature was associated with an increase in non-accidental mortality. Most of the temperature-related mortality burden was attributable to cold, except for Thailand.
