Sources, interactions, influencing factors and ecological risks of microplastics and antibiotic resistance genes in soil: A review

Microplastics (MPs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are gaining increasing attention as they pose a threat to the ecological environment and human health as emerging contaminants. MPs has been proved to be a hot spot in ARGs, and although it has been extensively studied in water environment, the results of bibliometrics statistical analysis in this paper showed that relevant studies in soil ecological environment are currently in the initial stage. In view of this, the paper provides a systematic review of the sources, interactions, influencing factors, and ecological risks associated with MPs and ARGs in soil environments. Additionally, the mechanism and influencing factors of plastisphere formation and resistance are elaborated in detail. The MPs properties, soil physicochemical properties, soil environmental factors and agricultural activities are the primarily factors affecting the interaction between MPs and ARGs in soil. Challenges and development directions of related research in the future are also prospected. It is hoped that the review could assist in a deeper comprehension and exploration of the interaction mechanism between MPs and ARGs in soil as well as the function of MPs in the transmission process of ARGs among diverse environmental media and organisms, and provide theory basis and reference for the MPs and ARGs pollution control and remediation in soil.

Phosphorus recovery via struvite crystallization in batch and fluidized-bed reactors: Roles of microplastics and dissolved organic matter

Struvite crystallization, a promising technology for nutrient recovery from wastewater, is facing considerable challenges due to the presence of emerging contaminants such as microplastics (MPs) ubiquitously found in wastewater. Here, we investigate the roles of MPs and humic acid (HA) in struvite crystallization in batch and fluidized-bed reactors (FBRs) using synthetic and real wastewater with a Mg:N:P molar ratio of 1:3:(1-1.3) at an initial pH of 11. Batch reactor (BR) experiment results show that MPs expedited the nucleation and growth rates of struvite (e.g., the rate of crystal growth in the presence of 30 mg L-1 of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was 1.43 times higher than that in the blank system), while HA hindered the formation of struvite. X-ray diffraction and the Rietveld refinement analysis revealed that the presence of MPs and HA can result in significant changes in phase compositions of the reclaimed precipitates, with over 80 % purity of struvite found in the precipitates from suspensions in the presence of 30 mg L-1 of MPs. Further characterizations demonstrated that MPs act as seeds of struvite nucleation, spurring the formation of well-defined struvite, while HA favors the formation of newberyite rather than struvite in both reactors. These findings highlight the need for a more comprehensive understanding of the interactions between emerging contaminants and struvite crystallization processes to optimize nutrient recovery strategies for mitigating their adverse impact on the quality and yield of struvite-based fertilizers. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: The presence of microplastics in wastewater poses a significant challenge to struvite crystallization for nutrient recovery, as it accelerates nucleation and growth rates of struvite crystals. This can lead to changes in the phase compositions of the reclaimed precipitates, with implications for the quality and yield of struvite-based fertilizers. Additionally, the presence of humic acid hinders the formation of struvite, favoring the formation of other minerals like newberyite. Understanding the interactions between emerging contaminants and struvite crystallization processes is crucial for optimizing nutrient recovery strategies and mitigating the environmental impact of these contaminants on water quality and struvite-based fertilizers.

Unraveling the effect of micro/nanoplastics on the occurrence and horizontal transfer of environmental antibiotic resistance genes: Advances, mechanisms and future prospects

Microplastics can not only serve as vectors of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), but also they and even nanoplastics potentially affect the occurrence of ARGs in indigenous environmental microorganisms, which have aroused great concern for the development of antibiotic resistance. This article specifically reviews the effects of micro/nanoplastics (concentration, size, exposure time, chemical additives) and their interactions with other pollutants on environmental ARGs dissemination. The changes of horizontal genes transfer (HGT, i.e., conjugation, transformation and transduction) of ARGs caused by micro/nanoplastics were also summarized. Further, this review systematically sums up the mechanisms of micro/nanoplastics regulating HGT process of ARGs, including reactive oxygen species production, cell membrane permeability, transfer-related genes expression, extracellular polymeric substances production, and ARG donor-recipient adsorption/contaminants adsorption/biofilm formation. The underlying mechanisms in changes of bacterial communities induced by micro/nanoplastics were also discussed as it was an important factor for structuring the profile of ARGs in the actual environment, including causing environmental stress, providing carbon sources, forming biofilms, affecting pollutants distribution and environmental factors. This review contributes to a systematical understanding of the potential risks of antibiotic resistance dissemination caused by micro/nanoplastics and provokes thinking about perspectives for future research and the management of micro/nanoplastics and plastics.

Microplastic pollution promotes soil respiration: A global-scale meta-analysis

Microplastic (MP) pollution likely affects global soil carbon (C) dynamics, yet it remains uncertain how and to what extent MP influences soil respiration. Here, we report on a global meta-analysis to determine the effects of MP pollution on the soil microbiome and CO2 emission. We found that MP pollution significantly increased the contents of soil organic C (SOC) (21%) and dissolved organic C (DOC) (12%), the activity of fluorescein diacetate hydrolase (FDAse) (10%), and microbial biomass (17%), but led to a decrease in microbial diversity (3%). In particular, increases in soil C components and microbial biomass further promote CO2 emission (25%) from soil, but with a much higher effect of MPs on these emissions than on soil C components and microbial biomass. The effect could be attributed to the opposite effects of MPs on microbial biomass vs. diversity, as soil MP accumulation recruited some functionally important bacteria and provided additional C substrates for specific heterotrophic microorganisms, while inhibiting the growth of autotrophic taxa (e.g., Chloroflexi, Cyanobacteria). This study reveals that MP pollution can increase soil CO2 emission by causing shifts in the soil microbiome. These results underscore the potential importance of plastic pollution for terrestrial C fluxes, and thus climate feedbacks.

Microbial synergies drive simultaneous biodegradation of ethoxy and alkyl chains of Nonylphenol Ethoxylate in fluidized bed reactors

The widely-used surfactant Nonylphenol Ethoxylate (NPEO) produces endocrine-disrupting compounds during biodegradation, with these byproducts being more harmful than untreated NPEO. This study investigates the effectiveness of a Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR) in reducing the production of 4-Nonylphenol (4-NP) during the biodegradation of NPEO. Two identical FBR filled with sand were used to assess the NPEO degradation and to enhance the microbial consortia capable of breaking down the complex byproducts, ethanol and fumarate were introduced as co-substrates. Our findings demonstrate the significant potential of the FBR, especially when coupled with fumarate, for enhancing the surfactant degradation. It outperforms the efficiency achieved with ethanol as the primary electron donor, albeit with a higher rate of byproduct production. Microbial community taxonomy and metabolic prediction revealed the high abundance of Geobacter (1.51-31.71%) and Methanobacterium (1.08-13.81%) in non-conductive sand. This may hint a new metabolic interaction and expand our understanding of Direct Interspecies Electron Transfer (DIET) in bioreactors applied to micropollutants degradation. Such an intricate relationship between facultative and anaerobes working together to simultaneously biodegrade the ethoxy and alkyl chains presents a new perspective on NPEO degradation and can potentially be extended to other micropollutants.

Effects of heavy metal and disinfectant on antibiotic resistance genes and virulence factor genes in the plastisphere from diverse soil ecosystems

Antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) are world-wide contaminants posing potential health risks. Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) and heavy metals can apply selective pressure on antibiotic resistance. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding their coupled effect on changes in ARGs and virulence factor genes (VFGs) in various soil types and their plastispheres. Herein, we conducted a microcosm experiment to explore the abundances and profiles of ARGs and VFGs in soil plastispheres from three distinct types of soils amended with Cu and disinfectants. The plastispheres enriched the ARGs' abundance compared to soils and stimulated the coupling effect of combined pollutants on promoting the abundances of ARGs and VFGs. Horizontal gene transfer inevitably accelerates the propagation of ARGs and VFGs in plastispheres under pollutant stress. In plastispheres, combined exposure to disinfectants and Cu increased some potential pathogens' relative abundances. Moreover, the combined effect of disinfectants and Cu on ARGs and VFGs changed with soil type in plastispheres, emphasising the necessity to incorporate soil type considerations into health risk assessments for ARGs and VFGs. Overall, this study highlights the high health risks of ARGs under the selective pressure of combined pollutants in plastispheres and provides valuable insights for future risk assessments related to antibiotic resistance.

The One Health Concept

The concept of One Health has been developed as the appreciation that human health is intricately connected to those of other animals and the environment that they inhabit. In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic and noticeable effects of climate change have encouraged national and international cooperation to apply One Health strategies to address key issues of health and welfare. The United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals have established targets for health and wellbeing, clean water and sanitation, climate action, as well as sustainability in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. The One Health Quadripartite comprises the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH-formerly OIE), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). There are six areas of focus which are Laboratory services, Control of zoonotic diseases, Neglected tropical diseases, Antimicrobial resistance, Food safety and Environmental health. This article discusses the concept of One Health by considering examples of infectious diseases and environmental issues under each of those six headings. Biomedical Scientists, Clinical Scientists and their colleagues working in diagnostic and research laboratories have a key role to play in applying the One Health approach to key areas of healthcare in the 21st Century.

The connection between the antibiotic resistome and nitrogen-cycling microorganisms in paddy soil is enhanced by application of chemical and plant-derived organic fertilizers

Antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) present significant risks to environments and public health. In particular, there is increasing awareness of the role of soil nitrogen in ARG dissemination. Here, we investigated the connections between antibiotic resistome and nitrogen-cycling microbes in paddy soil by performing five-year field experiments with the treatments of no nitrogen fertilization (CK), reduced chemical nitrogen fertilization (LN), conventional chemical nitrogen fertilization (CN) and plant-derived organic nitrogen fertilization (ON). Compared with CK treatment, CN and ON treatments significantly increased soil NH4+ and TN concentrations by 25.4%-56.5% and 10.4%-20.1%, respectively. Redundancy analysis revealed significantly positive correlation of NH4+ with most ARGs, including tetA, macB and barA. Correspondingly, CN and ON treatments enhanced ARG abundances by 21.9%-23.2%. Moreover, CN and ON treatments promoted nitrate/nitrite-reducing bacteria and linked the corresponding N-cycling functional genes (narG, narH, nirK and nrfA) with most ARGs. Metagenomic binning was performed and identified Gemmatimonadaceae, Caulobacteraceae, Ilumatobacteraceae and Anaerolineaceae as hosts for both ARGs and nitrate/nitrite reduction genes that were enriched by CN and ON treatments. Soil resistome risk score analysis indicated that, although there was increased relation of ARG to nitrogen-cycling microorganisms with nitrogen fertilizer application, the environmental risk of ARGs was not increased due to the lower distribution of ARGs in pathogens. This study contributed to a deeper understanding of the role of soil nitrogen in shaping ARG profiles and controlling soil resistome risk.

The soil plastisphere

Understanding the effects of plastic pollution in terrestrial ecosystems is a priority in environmental research. A central aspect of this suite of pollutants is that it entails particles, in addition to chemical compounds, and this makes plastic quite different from the vast majority of chemical environmental pollutants. Particles can be habitats for microbial communities, and plastics can be a source of chemical compounds that are released into the surrounding environment. In the aquatic literature, the term 'plastisphere' has been coined to refer to the microbial community colonizing plastic debris; here, we use a definition that also includes the immediate soil environment of these particles to align the definition with other concepts in soil microbiology. First, we highlight major differences in the plastisphere between aquatic and soil ecosystems, then we review what is currently known about the soil plastisphere, including the members of the microbial community that are enriched, and the possible mechanisms underpinning this selection. Then, we focus on outlining future prospects for research on the soil plastisphere.

Selection for antimicrobial resistance in the plastisphere

Microplastics and antimicrobials are widespread contaminants that threaten global systems and frequently co-exist in the presence of human or animal pathogens. Whilst the impact of each of these contaminants has been studied in isolation, the influence of this co-occurrence in driving antimicrobial resistance (AMR)1 in microplastic-adhered microbial communities, known as 'the Plastisphere', is not well understood. This review proposes the mechanisms by which interactions between antimicrobials and microplastics may drive selection for AMR in the Plastisphere. These include: 1) increased rates of horizontal gene transfer in the Plastisphere compared with free-living counterparts and natural substrate controls due to the proximity of cells, co-occurrence of environmental microplastics with AMR selective compounds and the sequestering of extracellular antibiotic resistance genes in the biofilm matrix. 2) An elevated AMR selection pressure in the Plastisphere due to the adsorbing of AMR selective or co-selective compounds to microplastics at concentrations greater than those found in surrounding mediums and potentially those adsorbed to comparator particles. 3) AMR selection pressure may be further elevated in the Plastisphere due to the incorporation of antimicrobial or AMR co-selective chemicals in the plastic matrix during manufacture. Implications for both ecological functioning and environmental risk assessments are discussed, alongside recommendations for further research.

Prevalence of antibiotic and metal resistance genes in phytoremediated cadmium and zinc contaminated soil assisted by chitosan and Trichoderma harzianum

Heavy metal in soil have been shown to be toxic with high concentrations and acts as selective pressure on both bacterial metal and antibiotic resistance determinants, posing a serious risk to public health. In cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) contaminated soil, chitosan (Chi) and Trichoderma harzianum (Tri) were applied alone and in combination to assist phytoremediation by Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. Prevalence of antibiotic and metal resistance genes (ARGs and MRGs) in the soil was also evaluated using metagenomic approach. Results indicated that the phytoremediation of Cd and Zn contaminated soil was promoted by Chi, and Tri further reinforced this effect, along with the increased availability of Cd and Zn in soil. Meanwhile, combination of Chi and Tri enhanced the prevalence of ARGs (e.g., multidrug and β-lactam resistance genes) and maintained a high level of MRGs (e.g., chromium, copper) in soil. Soil available Zn and Cd fractions were the main factors contributing to ARGs profile by co-selection, while boosted bacterial hosts (e.g., Mitsuaria, Solirubrobacter, Ramlibacter) contributed to prevalence of most MRGs (e.g., Cd). These findings indicate the potential risk of ARGs and MRGs propagation in phytoremediation of metal contaminated soils assisted by organic and biological agents.

Enhancing rice quality and productivity: Multifunctional biochar for arsenic, cadmium, and bacterial control in paddy soil

The perilousness of arsenic and cadmium (As-Cd) toxicity in water and soil presents a substantial hazard to the ecosystem and human well-being. Additionally, this metal (loids) (MLs) can have a deleterious effect on rice quality and yield, owing to the existence of toxic stress. In response to the pressing concern of reducing the MLs accumulation in rice grain, this study has prepared magnesium-manganese-modified corn-stover biochar (MMCB), magnesium-manganese-modified eggshell char (MMEB), and a combination of both (MMCEB). To test the effectiveness of these amendments, several pot trials were conducted, utilizing 1% and 2% application rates. The research discovered that the MMEB followed by MMCEB treatment at a 2% rate yielded the most significant paddy and rice quality, compared to the untreated control (CON) and MMCB. MMEB and MMCEB also extensively decreased the MLs content in the grain than CON, thereby demonstrating the potential to enrich food security and human healthiness. In addition, MMEB and MMCEB augmented the microbial community configuration in the paddy soil, including As-Cd detoxifying bacteria, and decreased bioavailable form of the MLs in the soil compared to the CON. The amendments also augmented Fe/Mn-plaque which captured a considerable quantity of As-Cd in comparison to the CON. In conclusion, the utilization of multifunctional biochar, such as MMEB and MMCEB, is an encouraging approach to diminish MLs aggregation in rice grain and increase rice yield for the reparation of paddy soils via transforming microbiota especially enhancing As-Cd detoxifying taxa, thereby improving agroecology, food security, and human and animal health.

Interplay of compound pollutants with microplastics transported in saturated porous media: Effect of co-existing graphene oxide and tetracycline

Co-existence of microplastics, nanomaterials, and antibiotics may lead to intensified multifaceted pollution, which may influence their fate in soils. This study investigated the co-transport behavior of polystyrene microplastics (PS) and compound pollutants of graphene oxide (GO) and tetracycline (TC). Packed column experiments for microplastic with or without combined pollutants were performed in KCl (10 and 30 mM) and CaCl2 solutions (0.3 and 1 mM). The results showed transport of PS was facilitated at low ionic strengths and inhibited at high ionic strengths by GO with or without TC under examined conditions. Carrier effect of GO as well as the aggregation of PS in the presence of co-exiting GO or GO-TC could be the contributor. Although the existence of TC relieved the ripening phenomenon of PS and GO deposition due to enhanced electronegativity of sand media, the effect of GO on the PS transport has not been significantly impacted, indicating the dominant role of GO during cotransport process. Furthermore, the transport of PS was increased by TC owing to competition for deposition sites on sand surfaces. In turn, the transport of TC was mainly affected by PS whether graphene was present or not. The increase in electrostatic repulsive force (transport-promoting) and addition adsorption sites (transport-inhibiting) may be responsible for the observations. Our findings could improve understandings of complex environmental behaviors of microplastics and provide insight into investigation on cotransport of emerging contaminants under various conditions relevant to the subsurface environment.

Effect of microplastics on the degradation of tetracycline in a soil microbial electric field

The degradation of organic pollutants and the adsorption of organic pollutants onto microplastics (MPs) in the environment have recently been intensively studied, but the effects of biocurrents, which are widespread in various soil environments, on the environmental behavior of MPs and antibiotic pollutants have not been reported. In this study, it was found that polylactic acid (PLA) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs accelerated the mineralization of humic substances in microbial electrochemical systems (MESs). After tetracycline (TC) was introduced into the MESs, the internal resistance of the soil MESs decreased. Additionally, the presence of MPs enhanced the charge output of the soil MESs by 40% (PLA+TC) and 18% (PVC+TC) compared with a control group without MPs (424 C). The loss in MP mass decreased after TC was added, suggesting a promotion of TC degradation rather than MP degradation for charge output. MPs altered the distribution of the highest occupied molecular orbitals and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals of TC molecules and reduced the energy barrier for the TC hydrolysis reaction. The microbial community of the plastisphere exhibited a greater ability to degrade xenobiotics than the soil microbial community, indicating that MPs were hotspots for TC degradation. This study provides the first glimpse into the influence of MPs on the degradation of TC in MESs, laying a theoretical and methodological foundation for the systematic evaluation of the potential risks of environmental pollutants in the future.

Mechanism for combined application of biochar and Bacillus cereus to reduce antibiotic resistance genes in copper contaminated soil and lettuce

The remediation of agricultural soil contaminated by antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is of great significance for protecting food safety and human health. Reducing the availability of copper in soil may control coresistance to ARGs. However, the feasibility of applying nano-biochar and Bacillus cereus to mitigate the spread of ARGs in Cu contaminated soil remains unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the use of biochar with different particle sizes (2 % apple branch biochar and 0.5 % nano-biochar) and 3 g m-2B. cereus in a 60-day pot experiment with growing lettuce. The effects of single and combined application on the abundances of ARGs in Cu-contaminated soil (Cu = 200 mg kg-1) were compared, and the related mechanisms were explored. Studies have shown that the addition of biochar alone is detrimental to mitigating ARGs in soil-lettuce systems. The combined application of 3 g m-2B. cereus and 0.5 % nano-biochar effectively inhibited the proliferation of ARGs in Cu-contaminated soil, and 3 g m-2B. cereus effectively inhibited the proliferation of ARGs in lettuce. Partial least squares-path modeling and network analysis showed that bacterial communities and mobile genetic elements were the key factors that affected the abundances of ARGs in rhizosphere soil, and Cu resistance genes and bioavailable copper (acid extractable state Cu (F1) + reducing state Cu (F2)) had less direct impacts. The bacterial community was the key factor that affected the abundances of ARGs in lettuce. Rhodobacter (Proteobacteria), Corynebacterium (Actinobacteria), and Methylobacterium (Proteobacteria) may have been hosts of ARGs in lettuce plants. B. cereus and nano-biochar affected the abundances of ARGs by improving the soil properties and reducing the soil bioavailability of Cu, as well as directly or indirectly changing the bacterial community composition in soil and lettuce, thereby impeding the transport of ARGs to aboveground plant parts.

Effects of freeze-thaw dynamics and microplastics on the distribution of antibiotic resistance genes in soil aggregates

This is the first study investigating the effects of freeze-thaw (FT) and microplastics (MPs) on the distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil aggregates (i.e., soil basic constituent and functional unit) via microcosm experiments. The results showed that FT significantly increased the total relative abundance of target ARGs in different aggregates due to the increase in intI1 and ARG host bacteria. However, polyethylene MPs (PE-MPs) hindered the increase in ARG abundance caused by FT. The host bacteria carrying ARGs and intI1 varied with aggregate size, and the highest number of hosts was observed in micro-aggregates (<0.25 mm). FT and MPs altered host bacteria abundance by affecting aggregate physicochemical properties and bacterial community and enhanced multiple antibiotic resistance via vertical gene transfer. Although the dominant factors affecting ARGs varied with aggregate size, intI1 was a co-dominant factor in various-sized aggregates. Furthermore, other than ARGs, FT, PE-MPs, and their integration promoted the proliferation of human pathogenic bacteria in aggregates. These findings suggested that FT and its integration with MPs significantly affected ARG distribution in soil aggregates. They amplified antibiotic resistance environmental risks, contributing to a profound understanding of soil antibiotic resistance in the boreal region.

Effects of long-term microplastic pollution on soil heavy metals and metal resistance genes: Distribution patterns and synergistic effects

Heavy metals (HMs) and microplastics (MPs) are two emerging factors threatening global food security. Whether long-term MPs pollution will affect the distribution of HMs and their resistance genes (MRGs) in soil is unknown. Here, metagenomic approach was used to decipher the fate of MRGs in cropland soils with long-term film MPs residues. Similar distribution pattern of MRGs was formed in long-term film MPs contaminated soil. A total of 202 MRG subtypes were detected, with resistance genes for Multimetal, Cu, and As being the most prevalent type of MRGs. MRGs formed a modular distribution of five clusters centered on MRGs including ruvB in long-term film MPs contaminated soil. MRGs also formed tight co-occurrence networks with mobile genetic elements (MGEs: integrons, insertions and plasmids). Redundancy analysis showed that HMs together with microbial communities and MGEs affected the distribution of MRGs in soil. Thirteen genera including Pseudomonas were identified as potential hosts for MRGs and MGEs. The research provides preliminary progress on the synergistic effect of HMs and MPs in affecting soil ecological security. The synergistic effect of MPs and HMs needs to be considered in the remediation of contaminated soils.

Microplastics exacerbate co-occurrence and horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes

Microplastic pollution is a rising environmental issue worldwide. Microplastics can provide a niche for the microbiome, especially for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which could increase the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, the interactions between microplastics and ARGs are still indistinct in environmental settings. Microplastics were found to be significantly correlated with ARGs (p < 0.001), based on the analysis of samples taken from a chicken farm and its surrounding farmlands. Analysis of chicken feces revealed the highest abundance of microplastics (14.9 items/g) and ARGs (6.24 ×10⁸ copies/g), suggesting that chicken farms could be the hotspot for the co-spread of microplastics and ARGs. Conjugative transfer experiments were performed to investigate the effects of microplastic exposure for different concentrations and sizes on the horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of ARGs between bacteria. Results showed that the microplastics significantly enhanced the bacterial conjugative transfer frequency by 1.4-1.7 folds indicating that microplastics could aggravate ARG dissemination in the environment. Potential mechanisms related to the up-regulation of rpoS, ompA, ompC, ompF, trbBp, traF, trfAp, traJ, and down-regulation of korA, korB, and trbA were induced by microplastics. These findings highlighted the co-occurrence of microplastics and ARGs in the agricultural environment and the exacerbation of ARGs' prevalence via rising the HGT derived from microplastics.

Co-existence of polyethylene microplastics and tetracycline on soil microbial community and ARGs

Microplastics are plastic particles with particle size less than 5 mm in the environment. As an emerging organic pollutant, the presence of microplastics in the soil environment has been widely noticed. Secondly, due to the overuse of antibiotics, a large amount of antibiotics that cannot be fully absorbed by humans and livestock enter the soil environment in the form of urine or manure, making the soil suffer from serious antibiotic contamination problems. To address the environmental problems of microplastics and antibiotic contamination in soil, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of PE microplastics on antibiotic degradation, microbial community characteristics and ARGs in tetracycline-contaminated soils. The results showed that the addition of PE microplastics inhibited the degradation of tetracycline, and significantly increased the organic carbon content and decreased the neutral phosphatase activity. The addition of PE microplastics significantly reduced the alpha diversity of soil microbial community. Compared to the single tetracycline contamination. In addition, combined contamination with PE microplastics and tetracycline significantly affected bacterial genera such as Aeromicrobium, Rhodococcus, Mycobacterium and Intrasporangium. Metagenome sequencing studies revealed that the addition of PE microplastics inhibited the dissipation of ARGs in tetracycline-contaminated soils. There were strong positive correlations between Multidrug, Aminoglycoside and Clycopeptide resistance genes and Chloroflexi and Proteobacteria in tetracycline contaminated soils, and there was a strong positive correlation between Aminoglycoside resistance genes and Actinobacteria in combined contamination of PE microplastics and tetracycline. This study will provide some data support for the current environmental risk assessment of the coexistence of multiple contaminants in soil.

Combined exposure to titanium dioxide and tetracycline induces neurotoxicity in zebrafish

In aquatic environment, engineered materials may inevitably interact with the coexisted organic pollutants, which affect their bioavailability and toxicity. In this contribution, the combined impacts of tetracycline (TC) and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂ NPs) on the neurodevelopment of zebrafish larvae were investigated, and the underlying mechanisms were further elucidated. Firstly, it was confirmed that the co-existence of TC would increase the size and decrease the zeta potential of TiO₂ NPs. Following, developmental indicators and motor behaviors were investigated. Our results indicated that co-exposure to TC and TiO₂ NPs exhibited enhanced embryonic malformation rates and abnormal nervous system development in zebrafish embryos. Meanwhile, the locomotor behavior was increased upon treatment of TC and TiO₂ NP. Further, pathway enrichment analyses of transcriptomic sequencing provided detailed information that either lipid metabolism or PPAR signaling pathway were significantly affected in the co-exposure group. Also, TC + TiO₂ NP exposure significantly changed the mRNA expression of neural development-related genes and up-regulated the expression levels of neurotransmitters like 5-hydroxytryptamine, dopamine, acetylcholinesterase, and γ-aminobutyric acid. Taken together, our results demonstrated that the co-exposure of TC and TiO₂ NPs had the potential to cause neurotoxicity in zebrafish embryos.

Bacterial metal(loid) resistance genes (MRGs) and their variation and application in environment: A review

Toxic metal(loid)s are widespread and permanent in the biosphere, and bacteria have evolved a wide variety of metal(loid) resistance genes (MRGs) to resist the stress of excess metal(loid)s. Via active efflux, permeability barriers, extracellular/intracellular sequestration, enzymatic detoxification and reduction in metal(loid)s sensitivity of cellular targets, the key components of bacterial cells are protected from toxic metal(loid)s to maintain their normal physiological functions. Exploiting bacterial metal(loid) resistance mechanisms, MRGs have been applied in many environmental fields. Based on the specific binding ability of MRGs-encoded regulators to metal(loid)s, MRGs-dependent biosensors for monitoring environmental metal(loid)s are developed. MRGs-related biotechnologies have been applied to environmental remediation of metal(loid)s by using the metal(loid) tolerance, biotransformation, and biopassivation abilities of MRGs-carrying microorganisms. In this work, we review the historical evolution, resistance mechanisms, environmental variation, and environmental applications of bacterial MRGs. The potential hazards, unresolved problems, and future research directions are also discussed.

Microplastics in Sewage Sludge: A review

Microplastics (MPs) represent a serious problem for the environment and for this reason they have been studied in many articles, especially their presence in aquatic environments and soils. MPs have been found in wastewater and sewage sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Most part of the published works have focused on the detection and elimination of MPs in the water line and several reviews have been published in the last years. In addition, the application of sewage sludge produced from WWTPs for agricultural use is known to be a primary source of MPs in soils. However, in the scientific literature less attention has been paid to the sludge and little is known about MPs fate when it is applied in agriculture. This work aims to give a global revision on the most used techniques to identify and detect MPs in sludges, their characteristics and incidence, their effect on sludge treatments and their impact on the environment. As far as we know, there are no standardized protocols for MPs extraction from soil and the possible repercussions on the cultivation of plants are not known. This review evidences that more studies are necessary to stablished standardized protocols and decipher the main mechanisms and the effects of MPs from sewage sludge in the environment.

Effects of co-selection of antibiotic-resistance and metal-resistance genes on antibiotic-resistance potency of environmental bacteria and related ecological risk factors

The inadequate elimination of micropollutants in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), cause to increase in the incidence of antibiotic resistant bacterial strains. Growth of microbial pathogens in WWTP is one of the serious public health problems. The widespread and simultaneous emergence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and heavy metal resistance genes (HMRGs) in the environment with heavy metals create persistent and selective pressure for co-selection of both genes on environmental microorganisms. Co-localization of ARGs and HMRGs on the same horizontal mobile genetic elements (MGEs) allows the spreading of numerous antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria in aquatic and terrestrial environment. The biofilm formation and colonization potential of environmental bacteria leads to the co-selection of multi-antibiotic resistance and multi-metal tolerance. Horizontal gene transfer (HGT), co-localization of both ARGs and HMRGs on the same MGEs, and the shared resistomes are important bacteria-associated ecological risks factors, which reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics against bacterial infections.

Assessment of residual chlorine in soil microbial community using metagenomics

Chlorine-containing disinfectants have been widely used around the world for the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, at present, little is known about the impact of residual chlorine on the soil micro-ecological environment. Herein, we treated an experimental soil-plant-microbiome microcosm system by continuous irrigation with a low concentration of chlorine-containing water, and then analyzed the influence on the soil microbial community using metagenomics. After 14-d continuous chlorine treatment, there were no significant lasting effect on soil microbial community diversity and composition either in the rhizosphere or in bulk soil. Although metabolic functions of the rhizosphere microbial community were affected slightly by continuous chlorine treatment, it recovered to the original status. The abundance of several resistance genes changed by 7 d and recovered by 14 d. According to our results, the chlorine residue resulting from daily disinfection may present a slight long-term effect on plant growth (shoot length and fresh weight) and soil micro-ecology. In general, our study assisted with environmental risk assessments relating to the application ofchlorine-containing disinfectants and minimization of risks to the environment during disease control, such as COVID-19.

Microplastics addition reduced the toxicity and uptake of cadmium to Brassica chinensis L

The coexistence of microplastics (MPs) and toxic metal contaminants in soils is becoming increasingly common, thereby posing serious threat to soil-plant systems. Cadmium (Cd) is the most common metal contaminant in soil and can easily combine with MPs, thereby altering its bioavailability. However, few studies have focused on the co-pollution of MPs and Cd, particularly the complex phytotoxicity caused by their interaction and the effect of co-exposure on Cd uptake in plants. We conducted pot experiments to compare the effects of exposure to polystyrene (PS) and Cd, as well as the effects of co-exposure (PS + Cd), on the physiological characteristics of Brassica chinensis L. and explored the regulatory factors of MPs on Cd uptake in plant tissues. The results showed that plant biomass, photosynthetic parameters, and chlorophyll content significantly decreased (p < 0.05) with increasing PS doses under treatment with MPs alone. Although the negative effects of PS and Cd co-exposure on plants were higher than those of PS alone, however, the addition of MPs reduced the toxicity effects of Cd on plants and decreased the uptake and accumulation of Cd by plants compared with the Cd treatment alone. Furthermore, plants can resist the increased malondialdehyde content and oxidative stress induced by PS and Cd exposure by increasing the activities of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase. Under the PS + Cd treatment, linear models showed that soil organic carbon and sucrase activity were the key variables affecting Cd uptake by plant shoots and roots, respectively. The results of the partial least squares path modeling further showed that PS indirectly affected Cd uptake by B. chinensis by significantly affecting the physicochemical properties of soil, Cd concentration, and enzyme activity. Our results provide a new perspective and an important reference for further understanding the effects of MPs on the bioavailability and fate of heavy metals.

Interactions of microplastics and soil pollutants in soil-plant systems

In recent years, increasing studies have been reported on characterization and detection of microplastics (MPs), and their interactions with organic pollutants (OPs) and heavy metals (HMs) in soils. However, a comprehensive review on the characteristics and factors that influence MPs distribution in soils, the sorption characteristics and mechanisms of soil contaminants by MPs, especially the interactions of MPs and their complexes with pollutants in the soil-plant systems remains rarely available at present. This review focuses on the sorption features and mechanisms of pollutants by MPs in soil and discussed the effects of MPs and their complexing with pollutants on soil properties, microbe and plants. The polarity of MPs significantly influenced the sorption of OPs, and different sorption mechanisms are involved for the hydrophobic and hydrophilic OPs. The sorption of OPs on MPs in soils is different from that in water. Aging of MPs can promote the sorption and migration of contaminants. The enhanced effects of biofilm in microplastisphere on the sorption of pollutants by MPs are critical, and interactions of soil environment-MPs-microbe-HMs-antibiotics increase the potential pathogens and larger release of resistance genes. The coexistence of HMs and MPs affected the growth of plants and the uptake of HMs and MPs by the plants. Moreover, the type, dose, shape and particle size of MPs have important influences on their interactions with pollutants and subsequent effects on soil properties, microbial activities and plant growth. This review also pointed out some knowledge gaps and constructive countermeasures to promote future research in this field.

Plastisphere showing unique microbiome and resistome different from activated sludge

Plastisphere (the biofilm on microplastics) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) may enrich pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) which can cause risks to the ecological environment by discharging into receiving waters. However, the microbiome and resistome of plastisphere in activated sludge (AS) systems remain inconclusive. Here, metagenome was applied to investigate the microbial composition, functions and ARGs of the Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastisphere in lab-scale reactors, and revealed the effects of tetracycline (TC) and/or Cu(II) pressures on them. The results indicated that the plastisphere provided a new niche for microbiota showing unique functions distinct from the AS. Particularly, various potentially pathogenic bacteria tended to enrich in PVC plastisphere. Moreover, various ARGs were detected in plastisphere and AS, but the plastisphere had more potential ARGs hosts and a stronger correlation with ARGs. The ARGs abundances increased after exposure to TC and/or Cu(II) pressures, especially tetracycline resistance genes (TRGs), and the results further showed that TRGs with different resistance mechanisms were separately enriched in plastisphere and AS. Furthermore, the exogenous pressures from Cu(II) or/and TC also enhanced the association of potential pathogens with TRGs in PVC plastisphere. The findings contribute to assessing the potential risks of spreading pathogens and ARGs through microplastics in WWTPs.

Damage and elimination of soil and water antibiotic and heavy metal pollution caused by livestock husbandry

The combination of antibiotics and heavy metals (HMs) increases the toxicity range of influence and requires additional research attention. This article analyzed the toxicity mechanisms and damage of combined pollution. Cross-resistance, co-resistance, and co-regulation are the primary toxicity mechanisms. Combined pollution increases antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), increases bacterial resistance, and promotes the horizontal transfer of ARGs, affecting the types and distribution of microorganisms. The hazard of combined pollution varies with concentration and composition. The physicochemical and biological technologies for eliminating combined pollution are primarily elaborated. Adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, and microbial treatment show high removal rates and good recyclability, indicating good application potential. This review provides a basis and reference for the further study the elimination of combined antibiotic and HM pollution.

Response of Antibiotic Resistance Genes and Related Microorganisms to Arsenic during Vermicomposting of Cow Dung

Antibiotic resistance pollution in livestock manure is a persistent issue that has drawn public attention. Vermicomposting is an ecofriendly biological process that can render livestock manure harmless and resourceful. However, little is known about the impact of vermicomposting on antibiotic resistance in livestock manure under stress caused by potentially toxic arsenic levels. Herein, lab-scale vermicomposting was performed to comprehensively evaluate the shift in antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and related microorganisms in fresh earthworm casts as well as vermicompost product health (i.e., nutrient availability and enzyme activity) when they were fed on arsenic-contaminated cow manure. The results showed that the earthworms' interaction with cow dung led to a significant reduction in ARG concentrations, especially for tetracycline ARGs (tet-ARGs), β-lactam ARGs (bla-ARGs), and quinolone ARGs (qnr-ARGs). However, arsenic significantly enhanced ARG accumulation in earthworm casts in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, vermicomposting increased the percentage of Bacteroidota in the converted products. Furthermore, arsenic exposure at low concentrations promoted the proliferation of Proteobacteria, whereas high concentrations had little effect on Proteobacteria. Our study provides valuable insight into the changes in the antibiotic resistome and related microorganisms during vermicomposting of arsenic-amended cow manure, and it is crucial to explain the environmental impact of earthworms and improve our understanding of the reciprocal benefits of soil invertebrates.

Adsorption characteristics of antibiotics on microplastics: The effect of surface contamination with an anionic surfactant

Microplastics and antibiotics are common, typical pollutants, and they can cause compound pollution where they coexist in the environment. Surfactants in the environment can change the interface characteristics of pollutants, and then drive the change of environmental behavior of pollutants. In this paper, we studied the physicochemical properties of complexes of polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE) contaminated with sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS); the complexes are referred to as SPS and SPE, respectively. Taking oxytetracycline (OTC) and norfloxacin (NOR) as representatives of broad-spectrum antibiotics, the effects of SDBS on the adsorption behavior of PS and PE were analyzed and possible mechanisms were proposed. The results showed that SDBS could effectively combine with PS and PE to enhance the surface electronegativity and reduce the Brunner-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area and porosity. The crystal structure remained basically unchanged, and the surface functional groups changed slightly. SDBS greatly enhanced the saturated adsorption capacities of PS and PE for OTC and NOR, and made adsorption easier, which reduced the Gibbs free energy of the adsorption system. The adsorption behaviors of SPS and SPE for the two antibiotics were consistent with the Elovich kinetic model and Sips isothermal model. SDBS enhanced the hydrophilicity of the microplastics, which facilitated their adsorption of antibiotics dissolved in water. SDBS could directly combine with antibiotics to form a complex, further increasing the adsorption capacity of the microplastics for antibiotics. The -SO₃H in SDBS could combine with oxygen-containing functional groups and -NH₂ in OTC and NOR. Non-ionic covalent bonds, electrostatic interactions, and hydrophobic attraction between the alkyl chain and benzene ring also played a role in adsorption. SDBS made it possible for MPs to load more types and quantities of pollutants and change their preferential adsorption selectivity, which significantly aggravated the environmental hazards.

Metagenomic analysis reveals antibiotic resistance genes and virulence factors in the saline-alkali soils from the Yellow River Delta, China

The propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and virulence factors (VFs) in the saline-alkali soils and associated environmental factors remains unknown. In this study, soil samples from the Yellow River Delta, China with four salinity gradients were characterized by their physiochemical properties, and shotgun metagenomic sequencing was used to identify the ARGs and VFs carried by microorganisms. Soil salinization significantly reduced the relative abundances of Solirubrobacterales, Propionibacteriales, and Micrococcales, and quorum sensing in microorganisms. The number of ARGs and VFs significantly decreased in medium and high saline-alkali soils as compared with that in non-saline-alkali soil, however, the ARGs of Bacitracin, and the VFs of iron uptake system, adherence, and stress protein increased significantly in saline-alkali soils. Spearman analysis showed that the ARGs of fluoroquinolone, tetracycline, aminoglycoside, beta-lactam, and tigecycline were positively correlated with soil pH. Similarly, we observed an increased contribution to the ARGs and VFs by taxa belonging to Solirubrobacterales and Gemmatimonadales, respectively. The control plot was mainly improved from saline-alkali land through application of animal manure, which tended to contain large amounts of ARGs and VFs in this study. Further studies are needed to observe ARGs and VFs in the saline-alkali land for multiple years and speculate the potential risks caused by varied ARGs and VFs to the soil ecosystem and human health.

High concentration of ammonia sensitizes the response of microbial electrolysis cells to tetracycline

Microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) is a promising technology for effective energy conversion of wastewater organics to biogas. Yet, in swine wastewater treatment, the complex contaminants including antibiotics may affect MEC performance, while the high ammonia concentration might increase this risk by increasing cell membrane permeability. In this work, the responses of MECs on tetracycline (TC) with low and high ammonia loadings (80 and 1000 mg L^-1) were fully investigated. The TC of 0 to 1 mg L^-1 slightly improved MEC performance in current production and electrochemical characteristics with low ammonia loading, while TC ≥ 4 mg L^-1 started to show negative effects. Generally, the high ammonia loading sensitized MECs to TC concentration, inducing the current and COD removal of MECs to sharply decline with TC ≥ 0.5 mg L^-1. The positive effect of high ammonia loading on MEC due to conductivity increase was counteracted with TC ≥ 1 mg L^-1. The co-contamination of TC and ammonia significantly decreased the bioactivity and biomass of anode biofilm. Although the high concentration of co-existing TC and ammonia inhibited MEC performance, the reactors still obtained positive energy feedback. The network analyses indicated that the effluent suspension contributed much to antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) transmission, while the microplastics (MPs) in wastewater greatly raised the risks of ARGs spreading. This work systematically examined the synergetic effects of TC and ammonia and the transmission of ARGs in MEC operation, which is conducive to expediting the application of MECs in swine wastewater treatment.

Interactions of microplastics with organic, inorganic and bio-pollutants and the ecotoxicological effects on terrestrial and aquatic organisms

As emerging contaminants, microplastics (MPs) have attracted global attention. They are a potential risk to organisms, ecosystems and human health. MPs are characterized by small particle sizes, weak photodegradability, and are good environmental carriers. They can physically adsorb or chemically react with organic, inorganic and bio-pollutants to generate complex binary pollutants or change the environmental behaviors of these pollutants. We systematically reviewed the following aspects of MPs: (i) Adsorption of heavy metals and organic pollutants by MPs and the key environmental factors affecting adsorption behaviors; (ii) Enrichment and release of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) on MPs and the effects of MPs on ARG migration in the environment; (iii) Formation of "plastisphere" and interactions between MPs and microorganisms; (iv) Ecotoxicological effects of MPs and their co-exposures with other pollutants. Finally, scientific knowledge gaps and future research areas on MPs are summarized, including standardization of study methodologies, ecological effects and human health risks of MPs and their combination with other pollutants.

Profile of Bacterial Community and Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Typical Vegetable Greenhouse Soil

The use of vegetable greenhouse production systems has increased rapidly because of the increasing demand for food materials. The vegetable greenhouse production industry is confronted with serious environmental problems, due to their high agrochemical inputs and intensive utilization. Besides this, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, carrying antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs), may enter into a vegetable greenhouse with the application of animal manure. Bacterial communities and ARGs were investigated in two typical vegetable-greenhouse-using counties with long histories of vegetable cultivation. The results showed that Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Gemmatimonadetes were the dominant phyla, while aadA, tetL, sul1, and sul2 were the most common ARGs in greenhouse vegetable soil. Heatmap and principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) demonstrated that the differences between two counties were more significant than those among soils with different cultivation histories in the same county, suggesting that more effects on bacterial communities and ARGs were caused by soil type and manure type than by the accumulation of cultivation years. The positive correlation between the abundance of the intI gene with specific ARGs highlights the horizontal transfer potential of these ARGs. A total of 11 phyla were identified as the potential hosts of specific ARGs. Based on redundancy analysis (RDA), Ni and pH were the most potent factors determining the bacterial communities, and Cr was the top factor affecting the relative abundance of the ARGs. These results might be helpful in drawing more attention to the risk of manure recycling in the vegetable greenhouse, and further developing a strategy for practical manure application and sustainable production of vegetable greenhouses.

Soil plastisphere: Exploration methods, influencing factors, and ecological insights

Microplastic (MP), an emerging contaminant, is globally prevalent and poses potential environmental threats and ecological risks to both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. When MPs enter into natural environments, they may serve as artificial substrates for microbial colonization and plastisphere formation, providing new ecological niches for microorganisms. Recent studies of the plastisphere have focused on aquatic ecosystems. However, our understanding of the soil plastisphere e.g. its formation process, microbial ecology, co-transport of organic pollutants and heavy metals, and effects on biogeochemical processes is still very limited. This review summarizes latest methods used to explore the soil plastisphere, assesses the factors influencing the microbial ecology of the soil plastisphere, and sheds light on potential ecological risks caused by the soil plastisphere. The formation and succession of soil plastisphere communities can be driven by MP characteristics and soil environmental factors. The soil plastisphere may affect a series of ecological processes, especially the co-transport of environmental contaminants, biodegradation of MPs, and soil carbon cycling. We aim to narrow the knowledge gap between the soil and aquatic plastisphere, and provide valuable guidance for future research on the soil plastisphere in MP-contaminated soils.

An Overview of Antibiotic Resistance and Abiotic Stresses Affecting Antimicrobial Resistance in Agricultural Soils

Excessive use of antibiotics in the healthcare sector and livestock farming has amplified antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as a major environmental threat in recent years. Abiotic stresses, including soil salinity and water pollutants, can affect AMR in soils, which in turn reduces the yield and quality of agricultural products. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of antibiotic resistance and abiotic stresses on antimicrobial resistance in agricultural soils. A systematic review of the peer-reviewed published literature showed that soil contaminants derived from organic and chemical fertilizers, heavy metals, hydrocarbons, and untreated sewage sludge can significantly develop AMR through increasing the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARBs) in agricultural soils. Among effective technologies developed to minimize AMR's negative effects, salinity and heat were found to be more influential in lowering ARGs and subsequently AMR. Several strategies to mitigate AMR in agricultural soils and future directions for research on AMR have been discussed, including integrated control of antibiotic usage and primary sources of ARGs. Knowledge of the factors affecting AMR has the potential to develop effective policies and technologies to minimize its adverse impacts.

Responses of performance, antibiotic resistance genes and bacterial communities of partial nitrification system to polyamide microplastics

Polyamide (PA), a prevalent microplastics (MPs), is often collected from wastewater treatment plants. However, the responses of partial nitrification system to PA MPs are unclear. The short-term and long-term effect of PA MPs on the partial nitrification system was slight, but the ammonia oxidation rate decreased slowly with the increase of PA MPs concentration. Meantime, the PA MPs addition could decrease the microbial diversity, alter microbial community structure of the system and facilitate the propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) including fabI, intI1 and Tn916/1545. Correlation analysis and network analysis indicated that Ferruginibacter, Hyphomicrobium, Terrimonas, Brevundimonas and Plasticicumulans in the system might be the dominant hosts of ARGs. In addition, oligotyping analysis indicated not all oligotypes of the relevant genus showed positive correlation with ARGs. In general, PA MPs had almost no effect on performance but altered community structure and increased ARGs spread risk of the partial nitrification system.

Insights into the beneficial effects of woody peat for reducing abundances of antibiotic resistance genes during composting

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in manure endangered human health, while heavy metals in manure will pose selective pressure on ARGs. This study explored the effects on ARGs of adding woody peat during composting at different ratios (0 (CK), 5% (T1), and 15% (T2)). After composting, the relative abundances of 8/11 ARGs were 6.97-38.09% and 10.73-54.31% lower in T1 and T2, respectively, than CK. The bioavailable Cu content was 1.40% and 18.40% lower in T1 and T2, respectively, than CK. Network analysis showed that ARGs, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and metal resistance genes possessed common potential host bacteria, such as Streptococcus, Dietzia, and Corynebacterium_1. Environmental factors, especially bioavailable Cu, and MGEs accounted for 80.75% of the changes in the abundances of ARGs. In conclusion, 15% Woody peat is beneficial to decrease the bioavailable Cu content and weaken horizontal gene transfer for controlling the spread of ARGs during composting.
