Enrichment and sensitive determination of phthalate esters in environmental water samples: A novel approach of MSPE-HPLC based on PAMAM dendrimers-functionalized magnetic-nanoparticles

Fabrication of Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Selective Extraction of Dibutyl Phthalates in Food Matrices

In this study, a novel magnetic molecularly imprinted polymeric material (Fe3O4@MOF@MIP-160) with a metal-organic backbone (Fe3O4@MOF) carrier was prepared using dibutyl phthalate (DBP) as a template. The material can be used for the efficient, rapid, and selective extraction of trace amounts of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in food and can detect them via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The synthesis conditions of the materials were optimized to prepare the Fe3O4@MOF@MIP160 with the highest adsorption performance. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectra (FT-IR), Vibration Sample Magnetic (VSM), and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method were used to characterize the materials. Compared with Fe3O4@MOF and the magnetic non-imprinted polymeric material (Fe3O4@MOF@NIP), Fe3O4@MOF@MIP-160 possesses the advantages of easy and rapid manipulation of magnetic materials, the advantages of high specific surface area and the stability of metal-organic frameworks, and the advantages of high selectivity of molecularly imprinted polymers. Fe3O4@MOF@MIP-160 has good recognition and adsorption capacity for di-butyl phthalate (DBP) and diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP): the adsorption capacity for DBP and DEHP is 260 mg·g-1 and 240.2 mg·g-1, and the adsorption rate is fast (reaching equilibrium in about 20 min). Additionally, Fe3O4@MOF@MIP160 could be recycled six times, making it cost-effective, easy to operate, and time-saving as compared to traditional solid-phase extraction materials. The phthalate ester content in drinking water, fruit juice, and white wine was analyzed, with recoveries ranging from 70.3% to 100.7%. This proved that Fe3O4@MOF@MIP160 was suitable for detecting and removing PAEs from food matrices.

Magnetic Poly(Amidoamine) Dendrimer for the Dispersive Solid Phase Extraction of Nitrophenols from Environmental Water Samples

A fast and simple dispersive solid phase extraction method is described for nitrophenols determination in water samples by using gas chromatography-nitrogen phosphorous detector. Firstly, the Poly(amidoamine) grafted Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized in different generations by successive addition of butyl acrylate and ethylenediamine. After characterization, the prepared dendrimer was utilized as an adsorbent for magnetic solid phase extraction of 2-nitrophenol, 3-nitrophenol, and 4-nitrophenol to benefit large number of surface amine interaction sites. The effects of the different parameters influencing the sample preparation efficiency were investigated. The proposed method showed linearity in the ranges of 0.04-700 and 0.05-700 µg/dm3 for nitrophenols. The obtained limits of detection and quantification under optimized conditions were 0.01-0.02 and 0.04-0.05 µg/dm3, respectively. The relative standard deviations (n = 5) were less than 3.8% (at 10 µg/dm3). Moreover, the calculated enrichment factors were above 200. In addition, the relative recoveries for a spiked river water sample were satisfactory.

Preparation of magnetic amphiphilic resin microspheres via the one-step polymerization method and extraction of four glucocorticoids for HPLC-MS analysis

Amphiphilic materials can be used for sample preparation of chromatography or mass spectrometry. Amphiphilic materials with magnetic properties in combination with magnetic suction devices allow for automated sample preparation. However, conventional synthesis methods are cumbersome and not suitable for the mass production of the material. In this study, a micro-suspension polymerization method was developed to synthesize magnetic amphiphilic resin microspheres (MARMs), providing new ideas for the preparation of amphiphilic microspheres. MARMs with particle sizes ranging from 3 to 6 μm were successfully prepared, with BET surface area up to 653.2 m2/g. A magnetic solid-phase extraction method based on MARM-5 was developed for the extraction of four glucocorticoids including Cortisone, Hydrocortisone, Cortodoxone, and Corticosterone. This method had a very short adsorption time of 0.5 min and a total extraction time of only 13 min. The limit of detection for the four glucocorticoids ranged from 0.22 to 0.82 ng/L. There was a good linear relationship between sample concentration and peak area in the range of 25∼500 ng/L. Relative recovery of 98 %∼108 % and internal standard normalized matrix effect factors of 95∼114 % were obtained, and the relative standard deviation was between 2.3 % and 6.3 %. The MARMs would be used as excellent solid extraction material for glucocorticoids.

Analysis and remediation of phthalates in aquatic matrices: current perspectives

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are high production volume chemicals used extensively as plasticizers, to increase the flexibility of the main polymer. They are reported to leach into their surroundings from plastic products and are now a ubiquitous environmental contaminant. Phthalate levels have been determined in several environmental matrices, especially in water. These levels serve as an indicator of plasticizer abuse and plastic pollution, and also serve as a route of exposure to different species including humans. Reports published on effects of different PAEs on experimental models demonstrate their carcinogenic, teratogenic, reproductive, and endocrine disruptive effects. Therefore, regular monitoring and remediation of environmental water samples is essential to ascertain their hazard quotient and daily exposure levels. This review summarises the extraction and detection techniques available for phthalate analysis in water samples such as chromatography, biosensors, immunoassays, and spectroscopy. Current remediation strategies for phthalate removal such as adsorption, advanced oxidation, and microbial degradation have also been highlighted.

Assessment of endocrine disruptor pollutants and their metabolites in environmental water samples using a sustainable natural deep eutectic solvent-based analytical methodology

In this work, an evaluation of the occurrence of fifteen phthalates, four metabolites and one adipate in different groundwater, seawater and wastewater samples has been carried out due to their relevance on human health as they act as endocrine disruptors. For this purpose, a sustainable, fast and easy-handling vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction method using a natural hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent based on menthol and carvacrol as extraction agent, combined with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry technique, has been developed and applied for the first time. An optimization was performed to evaluate four important factors affecting the extraction performance, and an analytical validation was carried out in terms of matrix effect, linearity, extraction efficiency, and sensitivity. Recovery values were obtained in the range 72-119% for all analytes (except for monoethyl phthalate: 61.1-72.3%) with relative standard deviation values lower than 17%. Limits of quantification were found between 0.91 and 8.09 μg L-1. As a result of the assessment of 31 different environmental water samples, monoethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate and bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate were detected and quantified at different concentrations in the range 2.59-21.17 μg L-1 in 6 samples, and diallyl phthalate, butyl benzyl phthalate, dipentyl phthalate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, dihexyl phthalate and bis (2-ethylhexyl) adipate were detected in 20 more, showing the exposition of the population to these hazardous substances.

Covalent organic framework-based magnetic solid-phase extraction coupled with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for the determination of trace phthalate esters in liquid foods

Covalent organic framework-coated magnetite particles (Fe3O4@COF) were synthesized and applied as the adsorbent to the selective capture of phthalate esters (PAEs) in liquid foods. Combined with the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) technology, a gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) method was employed for the separation and quantification of PAEs. Following optimization of the magnetic extraction and elution parameters, the developed analytical method offered a satisfactory linear range (0.1-5 μg L-1) with determination coefficients ranging from 0.9934 to 0.9975 for the five different PAEs studied. The limits of detection (LOD) were in the range 1.9-12.8 ng L-1. The recoveries ranged from 70.0 to 119.8% with a relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 9.7%. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations established that the dominant adsorption mechanism used by the COF to bind PAEs involved π-π stacking interactions. Results encourage the wider use of COF-based adsorbents and MSPE methods in the analytical determination of PAEs in foods.

Magnetic Liposomes Infused with GPCR-Expressing Cell Membrane for Targeted Extraction Using Minimum Organic Solvent: An Investigative Study of Trace THC in Sewage

Trace analysis of lipophilic substances in complex environmental, food, or biological matrices has proven to be a challenge, on account of their high susceptibility to adsorption by particulate matter and liquid-solid interfaces. For this purpose, liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) is often employed as the separation method, which uses water-immiscible organic solvents. As an alternative, magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) allows for adsorption, separation, and recovery of analytes from large volumes of aqueous samples with minimum usage of organic solvents. However, the poor selectivity hampers its performance in various scenarios, especially in sewage samples where complicated and unpredictable interference exists, resulting in block of the active adsorption sites of the sorbent. To this end, we propose receptor-affinity MSPE employing magnetic liposomes decorated with cell membranes expressing G-protein-coupled receptor as the sorbents. Application of the novel sorbent CM@Lip@Fe infused with CB1 cannabinoid receptors was demonstrated for the targeted extraction and enrichment of tetrahydrocannabinol from sewage matrix. Thanks to the high affinity and molecular selectivity of the ligand-receptor interactions, a limit of quantitation of 5.17 ng/L was achieved coupled with HPLC-MS/MS in unfiltered raw sewage, featuring minimum usage of organic solvents, fivefold enhanced sensitivity, low sorbent dosage (75 mg/L of sewage), and high efficiency as major advantages over conventional LLE. This work establishes a framework for efficient separation of specific molecules from complex media, thus promising to extend and refine standard LLE as the clean-up procedure for trace analysis.

β-Cyclodextrin functionalized magnetic polyamine-amine dendrimers for high enrichment and effective analysis of trace bisphenolic pollutants in beverages

Bisphenols (BPs) are typical endocrine disruptors, which can cause great effects on environmental, organisms and human health. In this study, β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) functionalized polyamidoamine dendrimers-modified Fe₃O₄ nanomaterials (MNPs@PAMAM (G3.0)@β-CD) were facilely synthesized. It exhibited good adsorption capacities for BPs, which was utilized to construct a sensitive tool in combination with high performance liquid chromatography for monitoring BPs such as bisphenol A (BPA), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol AF (BPAF) and bisphenol AP (BPAP) in beverage samples. The factors affecting the enrichment were examined such as generation of adsorbent, dosage of adsorbent, type and volume of eluting solvent, elution time and pH value of sample solution. The optimal parameters for enrichment was as follows: dosage of adsorbent, 60 mg; adsorption time, 50min; sample pH, pH7; elutent, 9 mL mixture of methanol and acetone(1:1); elution time, 6min; sample volume, 60 mL. The experimental results demonstrated that the adsorption conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The results showed the maximum adsorption capacities of BPS, TBBPA, BPA, BPAF and BPAP were 131.80 μgg^-1, 139.84 μgg^-1, 157.08 μgg^-1, 142.11 μgg^-1 and 134.23 μgg^-1, respectively. Under optimal conditions, BPS had good linear relationship over range from of 0.5-300 μgL^-1, and the linear ranges of BPA, TBBPA, BPAF and BPAP ranged from 0.1 to 300 μgL^-1. The limits of detection (S/N = 3) for BPs were good in range of 0.016-0.039 μgL^-1. The spiked recoveries of target bisphenols (BPs) in beverages were approving over range from 92.3% to 99.2%. The established method possessed merits of easy to operate, good sensitivity, rapidness as well as environmental friendliness, and which earned great application potential for the enrichment and detection of trace BPs in practical samples.

Polyamidoamine with a hyper-branched structure grafted on modified magnetic graphene oxide for the trace separation of diclofenac and acetaminophen followed by high-performance liquid chromatography determination

Different generations of polyamidoamine dendrimers were synthesized on a focal core of magnetic graphene oxide modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane. After the characterization of synthesized dendrimers, its second generation was employed as a suitable sorbent for simultaneous separation/preconcentration of diclofenac and acetaminophen by a dispersive magnetic solid phase microextraction. The extracted analytes were then quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. Under optimized conditions, the limits of detection were 0.3 µg/L for diclofenac and 0.1 µg/L for acetaminophen. The intra-day relative standard deviations at 50 μg L-1 levels were 1.8% for diclofenac and 2.1% for acetaminophen, while the inter-day relative standard deviations were 3.6% and 4.5% for diclofenac and acetaminophen, respectively. The calibration graphs were linear in ranges of 1.0-500.0 µg/L and 0.5-600.0 µg/L for diclofenac and acetaminophen, respectively, with good coefficients of determination (r2 > 0.998). The method was successfully applied to the determination of diclofenac and acetaminophen in water, milk, and biological samples.

A vortex-enhanced magnetic solid phase extraction for the selective enrichment of four quaternary ammonium alkaloids from Zanthoxyli Radix

Zanthoxyli Radix, the dried root of Zanthozylum nitidum (Roxb.) DC, one of traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs), exhibits various pharmacological activities such as anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, analgesic activity. A sustainable vortex-enhanced magnetic solid phase extraction (VE-MSPE) method combined with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) was established to enrich and analyze the bioactive quaternary ammonium alkaloids (QAAs) of Zanthoxyli Radix. Fe₃O₄@C@CMCS magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) was first synthesized for selectively adsorbing target QAAs (magnolinine, sanguinarine, nitidine chloride and chelerythrine), which possess excellent adsorption performance after being reused 10 times. The results revealed that the great adsorption rate of Fe₃O₄@C@CMCS MNPs for the four QAAs could reach 55.1-78.7 %. In addition, a reliable linear relationship (r ≥ 0.9995) and good recovery (97.5-104 %) was obtained. Consequently, the VE-MSPE method applying Fe₃O₄@C@CMCS MNPs as a sustainable adsorbent exhibited great potential in the selective enrichment of QAAs in TCM.

Highly efficient and simultaneous magnetic solid phase extraction of heavy metal ions from water samples with l-Cysteine modified magnetic polyamidoamine dendrimers prior to high performance liquid chromatography

Due to the strong metal-sulfur interaction between mercapto groups and metal ions, which can be used to functionalize polyamidoamine dendrimer decorated Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles for high enrichment of trace heavy metal ions from waters. Based on this concept, polyamidoamine dendrimer modified Fe₃O₄ nanomaterials were functionalized with l-Cysteine and a new magnetic solid phase extraction for rapid adsorption and separation of Hg²⁺, Pb²⁺, Co²⁺ and Cd²⁺ from waters was established. The factors affecting extraction efficiency have been optimized. Upon the optimal parameters, the established method provided good linear ranges of 0.1-200 μg L^-1 for Hg²⁺ and 0.05-200 μg L^-1 for Pb²⁺, Co²⁺ and Cd²⁺, and high sensitivity with limits of detection (LOD) of 0.018 μg L^-1, 0.014 μg L^-1, 0.013 μg L^-1 and 0.025 μg L^-1 for Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Co²⁺ and Hg²⁺, respectively. Real water samples were utilized to validate the proposed method, and achieved results revealed that the proposed method was sensitive, effective, stable and suitable for monitoring Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Co²⁺and Hg²⁺ in environmental waters. This work provided a novel strategy for the simultaneous analysis of target cations in waters, and a new direction for developing decoration method of nanomaterials according to specific purpose.

Magnetic nanofluid based on green deep eutectic solvent for enrichment and determination of chloramphenicol in milk and chicken samples by high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet: Optimization of microextraction

In this work, magnetic nanofluid based on a deep eutectic solvent that constricts through a simple and easy route, and subsequently applied for the preconcentration and microextraction of chloramphenicol (CAP) as a hazardous drug from milk and chicken samples via syringe-to-syringe microextraction prior to its determination by high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (HPLC-UV). In addition, the optimum conditions of effective factors were searched by the central composite design (CCD), and subsequently, at their optimum value, the figures of merit were evaluated. Also, the suggested method illustrated a low limit of detection (0.2 ng mL^-1), a low limit of quantitation (0.67 ng mL^-1), and a good linear range with an R² of 0.996. The CAP relative recoveries in milk and chicken samples were 90.3%-95.1%, with relative standard deviations lower than 4.2%. The current enhancement technique is simple, easy, and rapid, which makes it suitable for quantification of CAP by HPLC-UV at trace levels in complicated materials with reliable and reproducible results.

Tractable Method for Rapid Quality Assessment of Therapeutic Antibodies in Harvested Cell Culture Fluid based on FcγRIIIa-Immobilized Magnetic Microspheres

FcγRIIIa-binding affinity is one of the key factors to ensure the efficacy of many antitumor therapeutic antibodies, which should be monitored along with the titer, protein aggregation, and other critical quality attributes. The conventional workflow for the quality assessment of therapeutic antibodies in harvested cell culture fluid (HCCF) is time-consuming and costly nevertheless. In this study, a tractable method was established for rapid quality assessment of a HCCF sample through differentially extracting IgG with different FcγRIIIa affinity levels using FcγRIIIa-immobilized magnetic microspheres, followed by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) to determine the amount and monomer percentage of IgGs in the preceding eluate. FcγRIIIa-immobilized magnetic microspheres with polydopamine (PDA) and hydrophilic dendrimer (PAMAM) coating (denoted as Fe₃O₄@PDA@PAMAM-FcγRIIIa) were synthesized for the first time as magnetic adsorbents. The PDA cladding endowed the composites with good chemical stability in acidic elution buffer, and the PAMAM dendrimer empowered the composites of high ligand immobilization capacity and hydrophilic surface. The labile FcγRIIIa was immobilized under mild conditions. By directly applying a simple magnetic solid phase extraction procedure to treat HCCF, favored IgG species with high FcγRIIIa affinity would be selectively captured by Fe₃O₄@PDA@PAMAM-FcγRIIIa composites for subsequent SEC analysis. The monomer peak area value in SEC, which was set as the read-out of the proposed method, correlated directly with the theoretical overall quality of standard-spiked HCCF samples.

Magnetic solid phase extraction and determination of polychlorinated biphenyls in beverages utilizing C60 modified magnetic polyamido-amine dendrimers in combination with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants which are widely present in environment and harmful to human health. In this study, an efficient and convenient magnetic solid phase extraction method with C₆₀ modified magnetic polyamido-amine (PAMAM) dendrimers as sorbents was established for enriching trace amounts of PCBs in beverage samples. Gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) was utilized for analysis of PCBs. Parameters affecting extraction efficiency were optimized. Under optimal parameters, good linearity can be achieved in concentration range of 0.001-20 μg L^-1 and 0.002-20 μg L^-1 for nine selected PCBs. The limits of detection for PCBs were in the range of 0.1-0.2 ng L^-1. The spiked recoveries were in the range of 87.0 %-115.1 % (n = 3). The results proved that this established method was reliable for monitoring trace PCBs in beverage samples.

Novel electrochemical sensor from magnetic carbon dots and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide for sensitive measurement of tetrabromobisphenol A in beverages

Present work depicted a novel electrochemical sensor fabricated with magnetic carbon dots (M-CDs) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for selective measurement of 3,3',5,5'-tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in beverages. The M-CDs composite material revealed good electrocatalytic activity, and CTAB has strong hydrophobic interaction which enable it have good enrichment capacity of hydrophobic compounds, and combination of them further enhances the electrochemical signal. Hence CTAB decoration can markedly improve the detection performance of TBBPA. Electrochemical properties of the fabricated sensor was investigated through performing cyclic voltammetry (CV). The morphology and functional groups of the modified materials were examined with transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results indicated that the synthesized material had a spherical-like structure, good dispersion properties and plenty of functional groups on the surface. The effects of incubation potential, incubation time, pH of electrolyte, and scanning rate on oxidation peak current were investigated. Under optimal conditions, the designed sensor had good linear range of 1 nM-1000 nM, and the detection of limit of the constructed sensor was 0.75 nM. The constructed sensor was utilized to detect TBBPA in vitamin water, scream drink and genki forest, and satisfactory detection performance had been achieved.

Graphene oxide modified magnetic polyamidoamide dendrimers based magnetic solid phase extraction for sensitive measurement of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

In this study, graphene oxide modified magnetic polyamidoamine dendrimers (MNPs@PAMAM-G2.0@GO) nanoparticles were successfully prepared by amidation method. The obtained MNPs@PAMAM-G2.0@GO nanocomposites were examined by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), etc. MNPs@PAMAM-G2.0@GO exhibited excellent adsorption property and was investigated for magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from water. The detection of extracted PAHs was accomplished by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The target PAHs included anthracene (ANT), pyrene (PYR), fluoranthene (FLT), carbazole (CB), 7-methylquinoline (7-MQL), 9-methylcarbazole (9-MCB), dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DBT). Important operation parameters for MSPE that could affect the extraction efficiencies of PAHs were investigated in detail. Under optimal parameters, the constructed method demonstrated excellent linear range with 0.001-10 μg L^-1 for analytes and low limits of detection within the range of 0.11-0.9 ng L^-1. The spiked average recoveries of PAHs in natural water samples ranged from 92.5% to 105.2%. The promising results indicated that MNPs@PAMAM-G2.0@GO could be employed to efficiently extract PAHs from aqueous samples.

Contamination and ecological risk of microplastics and phthalates in the surface water of the Tha Dee Sub-River basin, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand

Plastic waste has become a significant source of water pollution worldwide, releasing microplastics (MPs) and hazardous chemicals into aquatic environments. The purpose of this study was to determine the occurrence and ecological risk of MPs and phthalates (PAEs) in the surface water of the Tha Dee Sub-River basin in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand. MPs, PAEs, and water quality parameters, including turbidity, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and salinity, were investigated simultaneously at 26 sampling stations. The average number of MPs per liter was 0.5 ± 0.4. Filaments were the most common MPs (59%), and transparent/white was the most prevalent color (51%). Four PAEs were found, with an average total concentration of 25.78 ± 93.87 µg/L, and diethyl phthalate was observed in the highest concentrations. Although there was no association between PAEs and other parameters, there was a significant correlation among particular PAEs (P < 0.05), indicating that they came from the same source. The pollution load index of MPs indicated a minor risk, but PAEs posed a medium risk to fish in the study area. This study's findings suggest that further research into the sources of PAEs and their contamination of aquatic life is needed.

Fabrication of Magnetic Al-Based Fe3O4@MIL-53 Metal Organic Framework for Capture of Multi-Pollutants Residue in Milk Followed by HPLC-UV

The efficient capture of multi-pollutant residues in food is vital for food safety monitoring. In this study, in-situ-fabricated magnetic MIL-53(Al) metal organic frameworks (MOFs), with good magnetic responsiveness, were synthesized and applied for the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of chloramphenicol, bisphenol A, estradiol, and diethylstilbestrol. Terephthalic acid (H₂BDC) organic ligands were pre-coupled on the surface of amino-Fe₃O₄ composites (H₂BDC@Fe₃O₄). Fe₃O₄@MIL-53(Al) MOF was fabricated by in-situ hydrothermal polymerization of H₂BDC, Al (NO₃)₃, and H₂BDC@Fe₃O₄. This approach highly increased the stability of the material. The magnetic Fe₃O₄@MIL-53(Al) MOF-based MSPE was combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-photo diode array detection, to establish a novel sensitive method for analyzing multi-pollutant residues in milk. This method showed good linear correlations, in the range of 0.05–5.00 μg/mL, with good reproducibility. The limit of detection was 0.004–0.108 μg/mL. The presented method was verified using a milk sample, spiked with four pollutants, which enabled high-throughput detection and the accuracies of 88.17–107.58% confirmed its applicability, in real sample analysis.

An overview of poly (amide-amine) dendrimers functionalized chromatographic separation materials

Chromatography is one of the most important separation techniques in analytical chemistry. In which, the separation materials are the core for good separation results. Poly (amide-amine) dendrimers with regular three-dimensional structure, abundant terminal groups, controllable molecule chains, and unique cavities appear to have a positive impact on chromatographic separation materials. In the past decades, poly (amide-amine) grafted adsorbents and stationary phases have presented high grafting efficiency, controllable surface structure, good dispersion, and wide practical applications. In this review, the prepared poly (amide-amine) functionalized separation materials and their applications are systematically summarized. Functions, significance, structure-actvity relationships and benefits of poly (amide-amine) dendrimers in the proposed separation materials are discussed in detail. And we hope to provide a useful reference for the future development of chromatographic separation materials and inspire new discoveries in the study of poly (amide-amine) functionalized materials.

A SiO2@MIP electrochemical sensor based on MWCNTs and AuNPs for highly sensitive and selective recognition and detection of dibutyl phthalate

A molecularly imprinted sensor for highly sensitive and selective determination of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) was fabricated by combining multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) with surface molecularly imprinted polymer (SMIPs). The MWCNTs and AuNPs were designed to modify the electrode surface to accelerate the electron transfer rate and enhance the chemical stability. SMIPs were synthesized using SiO₂ microspheres as carriers. By loading SMIPs capable of identifying DBP on the surface of modified electrodes of MWCNTs and AuNPs, an electrochemical sensor for detecting DBP was successfully constructed. After optimizing the experimental conditions, the modified electrode SiO₂-COOH@MIP/AuNPs/MWCNTs/GCE can recognize DBP in the range of 10^-7g L^-1 to 10^-2g L^-1, and the detection limit achieved to 5.09 × 10^-9 g L^-1 (S/N = 3). The results demonstrate that the proposed MIP electrochemical sensor may be a promising candidate electrochemical strategy for detecting DBP in complex samples.

Amphiphilic copolymers grafted on monodisperse magnetic microspheres as an efficient adsorbent for the extraction of safrole in the plasma

Polystyrene (PS) microsphere is a kind of attractive extracting medium due to its high stability in different matrices and its particle size can be controlled. The attachment of amphiphilic copolymers to the PS microsphere surface can overcome the drawback of PS relevant to its hydrophobic nature and low wettability. In our previous work, the magnetic composite based on PS microsphere (5 µm) and poly (divinylbenzene-co-N-vinylpyrrolidone, DVB-co-NVP) shell was successfully fabricated and applied for the extraction of safrole in cola drinks. However, the large size and ease of sedimentation limited its application in the enrichment of safrole from blood samples. Considering the adjustability of PS microsphere size, we synthesized the porous PS microspheres with the uniform size of 3 µm and then functionalized with Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles and poly (DVB-co-NVP) layer in this work. Using the proposed material as extraction sorbent, a simple and fast magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) method coupled with HPLC was developed for quantification of safrole in the plasma. Under the optimized conditions, the response to safrole was linear in the range of 0.02-12 µg mL^-1, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.006 µg mL^-1. Satisfactory recoveries were obtained between 85.67% and 97.74% (spiked at 0.05, 0.2, 2 µg mL^-1) and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) for the above spiked levels of the analyte were below 3.9% (n = 6). The adsorbent can be reused for 6 cycles without a significant loss of extraction capability.

Free Fatty Acid from Waste Palm Oil Functionalized Magnetic Nanoparticles Immobilized on Surface Graphene Oxide as a New Adsorbent for Simultaneously Detecting Hazardous Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Phthalate Esters in Food Extracts

A newly synthesized free fatty acids from waste palm oil functionalized magnetic nanoparticles immobilized on the surface of graphene oxide (FFA@MNP-GO) was successfully synthesized and characterized in this research. The combinations of long alkyl chain of free fatty acid with graphene oxide that consists of large delocalized 77-electron systems and abundant of hydrophilic groups with hydroxyl, epoxide and carboxylic groups offer the determination of simultaneous wide range of polarities of organic pollutants in real matrices through hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic and 77-77 interactions. The fabricated adsorbent was successfully applied as a magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent for the simultaneous separation of selected phthalate esters (PAEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in apple and cabbage extracts prior to their high performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detector (HPLC-DAD) determination. Factors affecting the extraction efficiency such as amount of adsorbent, desorption solvent, volume of desorption solvent, extraction time, desorption time, pH and sample volume were investigated and optimized. The results revealed that under optimal conditions, the detection limit of selected PAEs and PAHs were in the range of 0.56-0.97 ng mL^-1 and 0.02-0.93 ng mL^-1, respectively. The spiked recoveries of real apple and cabbage extracts for PAEs and PAHs were in the range of 81.5-117.6% with good relative standard deviation (RSD) (n = 5) less than 10% and 86.7-118.2% with acceptable RSDs (n = 5) ranging from 1.5 to 11.0%, respectively. This study reported for the first time the use of MSPE procedure for simultaneous determination of chosen PAHs and PAEs in real samples including apple and cabbage extracts by using new adsorbent, FFA@MNP-GO.

Rapid Analysis of Trace Phthalates by Spray-Inlet Microwave Plasma Torch Ionization-Tandem Mass Spectrometry in Commercial Perfumes

BACKGROUND

The less volatile fraction of perfumes can be easily contaminated by phthalates esters (PAEs) which are endocrine-disrupting chemicals during the production, bottling and transportation processes. It is necessary to establish an innovative and rapid method to determine the trace PAEs in commercial perfumes.

OBJECTIVE

Hence, self-built spray-inlet microwave plasma torch ionization coupled with a quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometer (QTOF-MS) was developed for direct analysis of PAEs in perfumes with no sample pretreatment.

METHODS

Perfumes were sprayed to the MPT's flame directly by sampling pump in 10 µL/min and the ions produced by MPT were introduced into QTOF-MS, the MPT worked at 2450 MHz and 40 W in the 800 ml/min flow rate of argon.

RESULTS

For the developed method, excellent linearities were obtained and the correlation coefficient of Di-n-pentyl Phthalate was 0.9799 and the rest were larger than 0.99. The LODs and LOQs were obtained in the ranges of 1.452-18.96 ng/g and 4.839-63.19 ng/g, respectively. The spiked recoveries of PAEs were in the range of 100.1-105.2% with satisfied intra-day RSDs and inter-day RSDs ranging from 1.51-4.34% and 3.45-5.65%, respectively. PAEs in commercial perfumes were successfully detected by spray-inlet MPT-MS2 with low concentrations from 0.036-1.352 µg/g.

CONCLUSIONS

The method is a promising tool in field analysis of PAEs in cosmetic solutions where rapid qualitative and quantitative analysis in needed.

HIGHLIGHTS

The method was satisfactorily applied to the analysis of commercial perfume samples within 30 s, and earned merits such as simplicity, sensitivity, environmental friendliness and ease operation.

Preparation of Polyamidoamine Dendrimer Modified Magnetic Nanoparticles and Its Application for Reliable Measurement of Sudan Red Contaminants in Natural Waters at Parts-Per-Billion Levels

The health threat from Sudan red dyes has been the subject of much attention in recent years and is crucial to design and establish reliable measurement technologies. In the present study, a new magnetic nanomaterial, polyamidoamine dendrimer-modified magnetic nanoparticles (Gn-MNPs), was synthesized and characterized. The nanomaterials had good adsorption capacity for Sudan dyes from natural waters. G1.5-MNPs possessed excellent adsorption capacity and a linear adsorption relationship over the range from 0.02 to 300 μg L⁻¹ of Sudan dyes with relative coefficients all larger than 0.996. The sensitivity of the proposed method was excellent with detection limits over the range from 1.8 to 5.5 ng L⁻¹ and the precision was less than 3.0%. G1.5-MNPs showed a remarkable application potential for the enrichment of trace environment pollutants in aqueous samples and the developed method based on this nanomaterial could be a robust and reliable alternative tool for routine monitoring of such pollutants.

A magnetic MOF derivative with rich interactions formed under mild preparation conditions for the extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from the Yellow River

For sorbents, good magnetic properties and rich interactions with targets are important ways to improve the efficiency of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). The magnetic MOF-101 derivative (MD) was obtained by heat-treating MOF-101 at different temperatures. After a series of characterizations, it was found that MD-350 had the best magnetic properties and retained more functional groups of the original MOF-101, and had better extraction efficiency as compared to MD obtained under other treatment temperatures for the MSPE of four non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in water samples, coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The remaining functional groups of MD-350 can produce more interactions with NSAIDs, such as hydrogen bonding, π-π conjugation, and coordination interactions; good magnetic properties facilitate the separation of the sorbent and the solution. These advantages indicate that the established extraction method demonstrated satisfactory extraction performance: an excellent recovery rate (96.73-100.61%) with a short extraction time (15 min), a wide linear range (4-400 μg L-1) with a determination coefficient of 0.9975-0.9993, a low LOD of 0.2-0.5 μg L-1 and up to 12 times service-life without the loss of the recovery rate. Satisfactory results were also obtained in extracting NSAIDs from Yellow River. All these results indicate that MD-350 prepared under mild conditions has potential as an MSPE sorbent to detect and remove NSAIDs from environmental waters with high efficiency and long service life.

Magnetic nanoadsorbents for micropollutant removal in real water treatment: a review

Pure water will become a golden resource in the context of the rising pollution, climate change and the recycling economy, calling for advanced purification methods such as the use of nanostructured adsorbents. However, coming up with an ideal nanoadsorbent for micropollutant removal is a real challenge because nanoadsorbents, which demonstrate very good performances at laboratory scale, do not necessarily have suitable properties in in full-scale water purification and wastewater treatment systems. Here, magnetic nanoadsorbents appear promising because they can be easily separated from the slurry phase into a denser sludge phase by applying a magnetic field. Yet, there are only few examples of large-scale use of magnetic adsorbents for water purification and wastewater treatment. Here, we review magnetic nanoadsorbents for the removal of micropollutants, and we explain the integration of magnetic separation in the existing treatment plants. We found that the use of magnetic nanoadsorbents is an effective option in water treatment, but lacks maturity in full-scale water treatment facilities. The concentrations of magnetic nanoadsorbents in final effluents can be controlled by using magnetic separation, thus minimizing the ecotoxicicological impact. Academia and the water industry should better collaborate to integrate magnetic separation in full-scale water purification and wastewater treatment plants.

Recent advances and applications of cyclodextrins in magnetic solid phase extraction

Cyclodextrins (CDs) as a family of cyclic oligosaccharides are toroidal with a hydrophobic interior and a hydrophilic exterior. They are well-known for their ability to form host-guest inclusion complexes with different compounds. They are used as chiral stationary phases in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC) or as chiral reagents in the background electrolyte of capillary electrophoresis (CE). In recent years, they have been used for modification of sorbents or as sorbents in solid phase extraction (SPE) procedures. Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), as a new type of SPE procedure, has received considerable attention due to its rapid phase separation process as compared to traditional extraction mode. This review covers the synthesis of CD-based magnetic sorbents (such as immobilization of CDs onto the different supports, production of nanosponges, and making hybrid substances with nanomaterials) and the use of these compounds in MSPE of different analytes from biological, environmental, and food samples. Also, prospects of CD-based sorbents for sample pre-treatment are also proposed.

Core-shell magnetic zeolite imidazolate framework-8 as adsorbent for magnetic solid phase extraction of brucine and strychnine from human urine

Core-shell magnetic zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (Fe3O4@PAA@ZIF-8) was successfully synthesized and first employed as adsorbent of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) for the determination of brucine and strychnine in human urine sample coupled with high performance liquid chromatography. The as-prepared Fe3O4@PAA@ZIF-8 was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer and zeta potential analysis. Main parameters affecting the MSPE efficiency, including amount of adsorbent, sample solution pH, extraction time, ionic strength, desorption solvent, desorption time and desorption volume were further optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed method provided good linearity (5.0-1000.0 μg L-1) with determination coefficients between 1.0000 and 0.9998, low limits of detection in the range of 1.1-1.2 μg L-1, and excellent reproducibility with relative standard deviations of less than 7.7%. The intra-day and inter-day precision were 1.5-3.2% and 2.1-7.2%, respectively. Satisfactory spiked recoveries were between97.2% and 115.4% with the relative standard deviations less than 6.3%. The results demonstrated that Fe3O4@PAA@ZIF-8 composite was a promising magnetic adsorbent for the preconcentration of brucine and strychnine in human urine sample.

Highly sensitive determination of endocrine disrupting chemicals in foodstuffs through magnetic solid-phase extraction followed by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

BACKGROUND

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), proved to be potential carcinogenic threats to human health, have received great concerns in food field. It was essential to develop effective methods to detect EDCs in food samples. The present study proposed an efficient method to determine trace EDCs including estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), estriol (E3) and bisphenol A (BPA) based on magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) coupled high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) in meat samples.

RESULTS

Fe₃ O₄ @COF(TpBD)/TiO₂ nanocomposites were synthesized via functionalization of magnetic covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with titanium dioxide (TiO₂ ) nanoparticles, and used as absorbents of MSPE to enrich EDCs. The efficient EDCs enrichment relies on π-π stacking interaction, hydrogen bonding, and the interaction between titanium ions (IV, Ti⁴⁺ ) and hydroxyl groups in EDCs, which improves the selectivity and sensitivity. Under the optimized conditions, target EDCs were rapidly extracted through MSPE with 5 min. Combining Fe₃ O₄ @COF(TpBD)/TiO₂ based MSPE and HPLC-MS/MS to determine EDCs, good linearities were observed with correlation coefficient (R² ) ≥ 0.9989. The limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) were 0.13-0.41 μg kg^-1 and 0.66-1.49 μg kg^-1 , respectively. Moreover, the proposed method was successfully applied to real samples analysis.

CONCLUSIONS

The established MSPE-HPLC-MS/MS method was successfully applied to determine EDCs in meat samples with rapidness, improved selectivity and sensitivity. It shows great prospects for EDCs detection in other complicated matrices. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Magnetic polyamidoamine dendrimer grafted with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid as an adsorbent for preconcentration and sensitive determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from environmental water samples

Polyamidoamine dendrimer decorated Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles was synthesized and grafted with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA). The resulting material was utilized to develop an effective magnetic solid phase extraction method in combination with high performance liquid chromatography for trace determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons including phenanthrene (PHE), anthracene (ANT), fluoranthene (FLT), pyrene (PYR) and benzo(a)pyrene (BaP). The MNPs@G3.0@4-MBA exhibited to be an efficient extracting medium due to the existence of terminal benzene ring groups, the internal pores, and strong hydrophobic interactions and π-π interactions. The experiments demonstrated that the proposed method possessed excellent linearity in the concentration range of 0.1-300 μg L^-1 with correlation coefficients (R) larger than 0.997, and the limits of detection (LODs, S/N = 3) according to the ratio of signal to noise equal to three of PHE, ANT, FLT, PYR and BaP were 0.014 μg L^-1, 0.032 μg L^-1, 0.055 μg L^-1, 0.027 μg L^-1 and 0.039 μg L^-1, respectively. The proposed method was applied to real water samples and the spiked recoveries were over the range of 92-99%. The results showed that the method earned good repeatability and high sensitivity, and the as-prepared materials were stable and reusable, which displayed that the proposed method would have a wonderful application prospect.

Evaluation of the Occurrence of Phthalates in Plastic Materials Used in Food Packaging

Phthalates are multifunctional synthetic chemicals found in a wide array of consumer and industrial products, mainly used to improve the mechanical properties of plastics, giving them flexibility and softness. In the European Union, phthalates are prohibited at levels greater than 0.1% by weight in most food packaging. In the current study, headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was optimized, through the multivariate optimization process, and validated to evaluate the occurrence of four common phthalates, di-iso-butyl phthalate (DIBP), butyl-benzyl phthalate (BBP), di-n-octyl phthalate (DOP), and 2,2,4,4-tetrabromodiphenyl (BDE), in different food packaging. The best extraction efficiency was achieved using the polydimethylsiloxane/divinylbenzene (PDMS/DVB) fiber at 80 °C for 30 min. The validated method showed good linearity, precision (RSD < 13%), and recoveries (90.2 to 111%). The limit of detection (LOD) and of quantification (LOQ) ranged from 0.03 to 0.08 µg/L and from 0.10 to 0.24 µg/L, respectively. On average, the phthalates concentration varied largely among the assayed food packaging. DIBP was the most predominant phthalate in terms of occurrence (71.4% of analyzed simples) and concentration (from 3.61 to 10.7 μg/L). BBP was quantified in only one sample and BDE was detected in trace amounts (<LOQ) in only two samples.

Efficient preparation of dual-emission ratiometric fluorescence sensor system based on aptamer-composite and detection of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in pork

A ratiometric fluorescence sensor system is proposed for detecting bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in pork, which is based on aptamer recognition with molybdenum disulfide quantum dots and cadmium telluride quantum dots (MoS₂ QDs/CdTe-Apta). Two signals exist in the system, among which the response signal is transmitted by CdTe-Apta. The amide condensation between aptamers and CdTe QDs shortens the distance between CdTe QDs and DEHP, thus quenching the fluorescence of CdTe QDs, possibly through a photoinduced electron transfer mechanism. The MoS₂ QDs deliver the self-calibration signal, and the fluorescence of MoS₂ QDs remains almost constant when co-existing with DEHP. Linearity (R² = 0.9536) was established for the DEHP concentration range 0.005-3.0 mg·L^-1, with a limit of detection of 0.21 μg·L^-1. The system was successfully applied in the determination of DEHP in pork. The system has potential for the quantitative determination of DEHP in practical applications.

Magnetic solid phase extraction of heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from environmental water samples with multiwalled carbon nanotube modified magnetic polyamido-amine dendrimers prior to gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometer

Present study described a sensitive and efficient method for determination of heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using multiwalled carbon nanotubes modified magnetic polyamido-amine dendrimers (MNPs@PAMAM-Gn@MWCNTs) as adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) coupled with gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC-MS/MS). Some pivotal parameters including PAMAM generation, adsorbent dosage, adsorption time, elution time and volume, pH and humic acid concentration were investigated to achieve the best adsorption efficiencies. Under the optimal conditions, 7-methylquinoline, dibenzothiophene and carbazole had good linearity in the concentration range of 0.005-20 μg L ^- 1, 9-methylcarbazole, 4-methyldibenzothiophene and 4,6-dimethyl dibenzothiophene had good linearity in the concentration range of 0.001-20 μg L ^- 1. All the correlation coefficients were higher than 0.996. The detection limits of the targets were in the range of 2.2 × 10^-4-1.8 × 10^-3 μg L ^- 1 with precisions less than 8.28% (n = 6). The enrichment factors were in the range of 141-147. The spiked recoveries were in the range of 87.0%-115.1% (n = 3). These results indicated that the method could be a reliable alternative tool for monitoring trace heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in environmental water samples.

Synthesis of magnetic metal organic framework/covalent organic framework hybrid materials as adsorbents for magnetic solid-phase extraction of four endocrine-disrupting chemicals from milk samples

RATIONALE

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), widespread and easily ingested through the simple food chain, have been suggested to pose potential carcinogenic threats to human health. Considering food safety and public health, it is urgent to establish a sensitive and effective method to enrich and determine EDCs in food samples.

METHODS

Novel hybrid nanocomposites Fe₃ O₄ @A-TpBD@NH₂ -MIL-125(Ti) were synthesized through the formation of amide bonds. The as-prepared Fe₃ O₄ were innovatively encapsulated with 4-aminobenzoic acid functionalized COF(A-TpBD) to generate bare carboxyl (-COOH), which formed amide bonds with the NH₂ -MIL-125(Ti), generating well-defined and hierarchical hybrid materials. The Fe₃ O₄ @A-TpBD@NH₂ -MIL-125(Ti) materials were used as the adsorbents for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS/MS) to enrich and determine EDCs (E1, E2, E3 and BPA) from milk samples.

RESULTS

Fe₃ O₄ @A-TpBD@NH₂ -MIL-125(Ti) exhibited improved adsorption efficiency and selectivity based on π-π stacking interaction, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interaction, and the interaction between the hydroxyl group in EDCs and titanium ions (IV, [Ti]⁴⁺ ). Under the optimized conditions, Fe₃ O₄ @A-TpBD@NH₂ -MIL-125(Ti)-based MSPE coupled with HPLC/MS/MS showed good linearity with correlation coefficient (R² ) ≥0.9983 and high sensitivity with limits of detection (LODs) in the range of 0.37-0.85 μg/L. Moreover, the developed method was successfully employed to detect EDCs in milk samples.

CONCLUSIONS

Fe₃ O₄ @A-TpBD@NH₂ -MIL-125(Ti) possess good adsorption capability and selectivity for EDCs. In addition, the proposed MSPE-HPLC/MS/MS method based on Fe₃ O₄ @A-TpBD@NH₂ -MIL-125(Ti) is effective and sensitive for the determination of EDCs in real samples, which can be used as a robust alternative method to monitor EDCs in complex matrices.

Preparation of magnetic zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 composites for the extraction of phthalate esters from environmental water samples

In this paper, magnetic ZIF-67 composites were prepared by an in situ method and utilized in the magnetic solid-phase extraction of phthalate esters. The obtained magnetic ZIF-67 composites were characterized in detail, and the adsorption performance was evaluated. The results showed that ZIF-67 crystals in the composites had a chamfered cubic shape with about 2.0 μm diameter and Fe3O4 was attached on the surface of ZIF-67. The parameters affecting magnetic solid-phase extraction efficiency were optimized including the adsorption and desorption conditions. Under the optimum conditions, magnetic solid-phase extraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for analyzing seven phthalate esters in environmental water samples was established. All the analytes exhibited good linearity (1-200 ng mL-1) with correlation coefficients higher than 0.9950. The relative standard deviations were between 4.3% and 8.9%. The developed method showed high sensitivity and had good potential for analyzing trace phthalate esters in water samples.

Direct immersion single-drop microextraction of semi-volatile organic compounds in environmental samples: A review

Single-drop microextraction (SDME) techniques are efficient approaches to pretreatment of aqueous samples. The main advantage of SDME lies in the miniaturization of the solvent extraction process, minimizing the hazards associated with the use of toxic organic solvents. Thus, SDME techniques are cost-effective, and represent less harm to the environment, subscribing to green analytical chemistry principles. In practice, two main approaches can be used to perform SDME - direct immersion (DI)-SDME and headspace (HS)-SDME. Even though the DI-SDME has been shown to be quite effective for extraction and enrichment of various organic compounds, applications of DI-SDME are normally more suitable for moderately polar and non-polar semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) using organic solvents which are immiscible with water. In this review, we present a historical overview and current advances in DI-SDME, including the common analytical tools which are usually coupled with DI-SDME. The review also focuses on applications concerning SVOCs in environmental samples. Currents trends in DI-SDME and possible future direction of the procedure are discussed.
