Biotechnologies for Marine Oil Spill Cleanup: Indissoluble Ties with Microorganisms

Cable bacteria: widespread filamentous electroactive microorganisms protecting environments

Cable bacteria have been identified and detected worldwide since their discovery in marine sediments in Aarhus Bay, Denmark. Their activity can account for the majority of oxygen consumption and sulfide depletion in sediments, and they induce sulfate accumulation, pH excursions, and the generation of electric fields. In addition, they can affect the fluxes of other elements such as calcium, iron, manganese, nitrogen, and phosphorous. Recent developments in our understanding of the impact of cable bacteria on element cycling have revealed their positive contributions to mitigating environmental problems, such as recovering self-purification capacity, enhancing petroleum hydrocarbon degradation, alleviating phosphorus eutrophication, delaying euxinia, and reducing methane emission. We highlight recent research outcomes on their distribution, state-of-the-art findings on their physiological characteristics, and ecological contributions.

Environmental stressor assessment of hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria biofilms from a marine oil spill

The environmental and economic impact of an oil spill can be significant. Biotechnologies applied during a marine oil spill involve bioaugmentation with immobilised or encapsulated indigenous hydrocarbonoclastic species selected under laboratory conditions to improve degradation rates. The environmental factors that act as stressors and impact the effectiveness of hydrocarbon removal are one of the challenges associated with these applications. Understanding how native microbes react to environmental stresses is necessary for effective bioaugmentation. Herein, Micrococcus luteus and M. yunnanensis isolated from a marine oil spill mooring system showed hydrocarbonoclastic activity on Maya crude oil in a short time by means of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) at 144 h: M. luteus up to 98.79 % and M. yunnanensis 97.77 % removal. The assessment of Micrococcus biofilms at different temperature (30 °C and 50 °C), pH (5, 6, 7, 8, 9), salinity (30, 50, 60, 70, 80 g/L), and crude oil concentration (1, 5, 15, 25, 35 %) showed different response to the stressors depending on the strain. According to response surface analysis, the main effect was temperature > salinity > hydrocarbon concentration. The hydrocarbonoclastic biofilm architecture was characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Subtle but significant differences were observed: pili in M. luteus by SEM and the topographical differences measured by AFM Power Spectral Density (PSD) analysis, roughness was higher in M. luteus than in M. yunnanensis. In all three domains of life, the Universal Stress Protein (Usp) is crucial for stress adaptation. Herein, the uspA gene expression was analysed in Micrococcus biofilm under environmental stressors. The uspA expression increased up to 2.5-fold in M. luteus biofilms at 30 °C, and 1.3-fold at 50 °C. The highest uspA expression was recorded in M. yunnanensis biofilms at 50 °C with 2.5 and 3-fold with salinities of 50, 60, and 80 g/L at hydrocarbon concentrations of 15, 25, and 35 %. M. yunnanensis biofilms showed greater resilience than M. luteus biofilms when exposed to harsh environmental stressors. M. yunnanensis biofilms were thicker than M. luteus biofilms. Both biofilm responses to environmental stressors through uspA gene expression were consistent with the behaviours observed in the response surface analyses. The uspA gene is a suitable biomarker for assessing environmental stressors of potential microorganisms for bioremediation of marine oil spills and for biosensing the ecophysiological status of native microbiota in a marine petroleum environment.

Structure and composition of microbial communities in the water column from Southern Gulf of Mexico and detection of putative hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms

This study assessed the bacterioplankton community and its relationship with environmental variables, including total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration, in the Yucatan shelf area of the Southern Gulf of Mexico. Beta diversity analyses based on 16S rRNA sequences indicated variations in the bacterioplankton community structure among sampling sites. PERMANOVA indicated that these variations could be mainly related to changes in depth (5 to 180 m), dissolved oxygen concentration (2.06 to 5.93 mg L-1), and chlorophyll-a concentration (0.184 to 7.65 mg m3). Moreover, SIMPER and one-way ANOVA analyses showed that the shifts in the relative abundances of Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus were related to changes in microbial community composition and chlorophyll-a values. Despite the low TPH content measured in the studied sites (0.01 to 0.86 μL L-1), putative hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria such as Alteromonas, Acinetobacter, Balneola, Erythrobacter, Oleibacter, Roseibacillus, and the MWH-UniP1 aquatic group were detected. The relatively high copy number of the alkB gene detected in the water column by qPCR and the enrichment of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria obtained during lab crude oil tests exhibited the potential of bacterioplankton communities from the Yucatan shelf to respond to potential hydrocarbon impacts in this important area of the Gulf Mexico.

Advancements in Detection and Mitigation Strategies for Petroleum-Derived Contaminants in Aquatic Environments: A Comprehensive Review

The exponential increase in the production and transportation of petroleum-derived products observed in recent years has been driven by the escalating demand for energy, textiles, plastic-based materials, and other goods derived from petroleum. Consequently, there has been a corresponding rise in spills of these petroleum derivatives, particularly in water sources utilized for transportation or, occasionally, illegally utilized for tank cleaning or industrial equipment maintenance. Numerous researchers have proposed highly effective techniques for detecting these products, aiming to facilitate their cleanup or containment and thereby minimize environmental pollution. However, many of these techniques rely on the identification of individual compounds, which presents significant drawbacks, including complexity of handling, subjectivity, lengthy analysis times, infeasibility for in situ analysis, and high costs. In response, there has been a notable surge in the utilization of sensors or generalized profiling techniques serving as sensors to generate characteristic fingerprints of these products, thereby circumventing the aforementioned disadvantages. This review comprehensively examines the evolution of techniques employed for detecting petroleum-derived products in water samples, along with their associated advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, the review examines current perspectives on methods for the removal and/or containment of these products from water sources, to minimize their environmental impact and the associated health repercussions on living organisms and ecosystems.

Diversity links to functionality: Unraveling the impact of pressure disruption and culture medium on crude oil-enriched microbial communities from the deep Eastern Mediterranean Sea

Mesopelagic water from the deep Eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMS) was collected under disrupted (REPRESS) or undisturbed (HP) pressure conditions and was acclimated to oil (OIL) or dispersed-oil (DISPOIL) under in situ pressure and temperature (10 MPa, 14 °C). Decompression resulted in oil-acclimatised microbial communities of lower diversity despite the restoration of in situ pressure conditions during the 1-week incubation. Further biodiversity loss was observed when oil-acclimatised communities were transferred to ONR7 medium to facilitate the isolation of oil-degrading bacteria. Microbial diversity loss impacted the degradation of recalcitrant oil compounds, especially PAHs, as low-abundance taxa, linked with PAH degradation, were outcompeted in the enrichment process. Thalassomonas, Pseudoalteromonas, Halomonas and Alcanivorax were enriched in ONR7 under all experimental conditions. No effect of dispersant application on the microbial community structure was identified. A. venustensis was isolated under all tested conditions suggesting a potential key role of this species in hydrocarbons removal in the deep EMS.

Performance evaluation of rhamnolipid biosurfactant produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and its effect on marine oil-spill remediation

This study aimed to reveal that the effect of biosurfactant on the dispersion and degradation of crude oil. Whole genome analysis showed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa GB-3 contained abundant genes involved in biosurfactant synthesis and metabolic processes and had the potential to degrade oil. The biosurfactant produced by strain GB-3 was screened by various methods. The results showed that the surface tension reduction activity was 28.6 mN·m-1 and emulsification stability was exhibited at different pH, salinity and temperature. The biosurfactant was identified as rhamnolipid by LC-MS and FTIR. The fermentation conditions of strain GB-3 were optimized by response surface methodology, finally the optimal system (carbon source: glucose, nitrogen source: ammonium sulfate, C/N ratio:16:1, pH: 7, temperature: 30-35 °C) was determined. Compared with the initial fermentation, the yield of biosurfactant increased by 4.4 times after optimization. In addition, rhamnolipid biosurfactant as a dispersant could make the dispersion of crude oil reach 38% within seven days, which enhanced the bioavailability of crude oil. As a biostimulant, it could also improve the activity of indigenous microorganism and increase the degradation rate of crude oil by 10-15%. This study suggested that rhamnolipid biosurfactant had application prospect in bioremediation of marine oil-spill.

Exploring fungal bioemulsifiers: insights into chemical composition, microbial sources, and cross-field applications

The demand for emulsion-based products is crucial for economic development and societal well-being, spanning diverse industries such as food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and oil extraction. Formulating these products relies on emulsifiers, a distinct class of surfactants. However, many conventional emulsifiers are derived from petrochemicals or synthetic sources, posing potential environmental and human health risks. In this context, fungal bioemulsifiers emerge as a compelling and sustainable alternative, demonstrating superior performance, enhanced biodegradability, and safety for human consumption. From this perspective, the present work provides the first comprehensive review of fungal bioemulsifiers, categorizing them based on their chemical nature and microbial origin. This includes polysaccharides, proteins, glycoproteins, polymeric glycolipids, and carbohydrate-lipid-protein complexes. Examples of particular interest are scleroglucan, a polysaccharide produced by Sclerotium rolfsii, and mannoproteins present in the cell walls of various yeasts, including Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Furthermore, this study examines the feasibility of incorporating fungal bioemulsifiers in the food and oil industries and their potential role in bioremediation events for oil-polluted marine environments. Finally, this exploration encourages further research on fungal bioemulsifier bioprospecting, with far-reaching implications for advancing sustainable and eco-friendly practices across various industrial sectors.

Bioremediation for the recovery of oil polluted marine environment, opportunities and challenges approaching the Blue Growth

The Blue Growth strategy promises a sustainable use of marine resources for the benefit of the society. However, oil pollution in the marine environment is still a serious issue for human, animal, and environmental health; in addition, it deprives citizens of the potential economic and recreational advantages in the affected areas. Bioremediation, that is the use of bio-resources for the degradation of pollutants, is one of the focal themes on which the Blue Growth aims to. A repertoire of marine-derived bio-products, biomaterials, processes, and services useful for efficient, economic, low impact, treatments for the recovery of oil-polluted areas has been demonstrated in many years of research around the world. Nonetheless, although bioremediation technology is routinely applied in soil, this is not still standardized in the marine environment and the potential market is almost underexploited. This review provides a summary of opportunities for the exploiting and addition of value to research products already validated. Moreover, the review discusses challenges that limit bioremediation in marine environment and actions that can facilitate the conveying of valuable products/processes towards the market.

Hydrophobic organogel sorbent and its coated porous substrates for efficient oil/water emulsion separation and effective spilled oil remediation

Frequent offshore oil leakage accidents and large quantities of oily-wastewater produced in industry and daily life bring huge challenges to global water purification. The adaptability and stability of organogels as adsorbent materials have shown wide application prospects in the field of oil-water separation. Herein, the organogels displayed stable hydrophobic/lipophilic properties with high absorption ability (1200 wt./wt%), efficient sorption of multiple emulsions (>99.0%), and good reusability. More importantly, the organogels were successfully assembled with 2D/3D substrates to achieve excellent sorption capacity (102.5 g/g) and recycling performance (50 cycles). The gel-carbon black assembled on MS (GCB-MS) sorbent with excellent photothermal conversion performance, and can rapidly heat the surface to 70.4 °C under 1.0 sunlight radiation (1.0 kW/m2) and achieved an ultra-high sorption capacity of about 103 g/g for viscous crude oil. Meanwhile, the GCB-MS was combined with a pump to build continuous oil spill cleaning equipment to achieve a super-fast cleanup rate of 6.83 g/min. The developed hydrophobic organogels had been expanded unprecedentedly to realize the comprehensive treatment of oily-wastewater in complex environments, including layered oils, emulsions, and viscous crude oil spill, which provided an effective path for the comprehensive treatment of oily wastewater in complex environments.

Distribution and abundance of oil-degrading bacteria in seawater of the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea, China

Petroleum hydrocarbons are widespread in seawater. As an important sea area in northern China, the content and distribution of petroleum hydrocarbons in seawater need our attention because of the high toxicity and lasting polluting effects on the ecological environment of the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea. In addition, there are few reports comparing the diversity of oil-degrading bacteria before and after enrichment. Therefore, we collected surface seawater from 10 sites in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea in the autumn of 2020 to study the distribution characteristics of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and the diversity of oil-degrading bacteria. The concentration of TPH was 81.65 μg/L-139.55 μg/L at ten sites in the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea, which conformed to the China Grade II water quality standard (GB3097-1997). Moreover, the pristine/phytane (PR/PH) value of most sites was close to 1, indicating that the area was obviously polluted by exogenous petroleum hydrocarbons. We found that oil-degrading bacteria in the seawater of the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea had a good degradation effect on C11-C14 short chain alkanes (degradation rate of 59.19-73.22 %) and C1-C4 phenanthrene (degradation rate of 48.19-60.74 %). In terms of the diversity of oil-degrading bacteria, Gammaproteobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria dominated the enriched bacterial communities. Notably, the relative abundance of Alcanivorax changed significantly before and after enrichment. We proposed that surface seawater in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea could form oil-degrading bacteria mainly composed of Alcanivorax, which had great potential for oil pollution remediation.

Emerging micropollutants in aquatic ecosystems and nanotechnology-based removal alternatives: A review

There is a significant concern about the accessibility of uncontaminated and safe drinking water, a fundamental necessity for human beings. This concern is attributed to the toxic micropollutants from several emission sources, including industrial toxins, agricultural runoff, wastewater discharges, sewer overflows, landfills, algal blooms and microbiota. Emerging micropollutants (EMs) encompass a broad spectrum of compounds, including pharmaceutically active chemicals, personal care products, pesticides, industrial chemicals, steroid hormones, toxic nanomaterials, microplastics, heavy metals, and microorganisms. The pervasive and enduring nature of EMs has resulted in a detrimental impact on global urban water systems. Of late, these contaminants are receiving more attention due to their inherent potential to generate environmental toxicity and adverse health effects on humans and aquatic life. Although little progress has been made in discovering removal methodologies for EMs, a basic categorization procedure is required to identify and restrict the EMs to tackle the problem of these emerging contaminants. The present review paper provides a crude classification of EMs and their associated negative impact on aquatic life. Furthermore, it delves into various nanotechnology-based approaches as effective solutions to address the challenge of removing EMs from water, thereby ensuring potable drinking water. To conclude, this review paper addresses the challenges associated with the commercialization of nanomaterial, such as toxicity, high cost, inadequate government policies, and incompatibility with the present water purification system and recommends crucial directions for further research that should be pursued.

Alcanivorax borkumensis biofilms enhance oil degradation by interfacial tubulation

During the consumption of alkanes, Alcanivorax borkumensis will form a biofilm around an oil droplet, but the role this plays during degradation remains unclear. We identified a shift in biofilm morphology that depends on adaptation to oil consumption: Longer exposure leads to the appearance of dendritic biofilms optimized for oil consumption effected through tubulation of the interface. In situ microfluidic tracking enabled us to correlate tubulation to localized defects in the interfacial cell ordering. We demonstrate control over droplet deformation by using confinement to position defects, inducing dimpling in the droplets. We developed a model that elucidates biofilm morphology, linking tubulation to decreased interfacial tension and increased cell hydrophobicity.

Characterization of trehalolipid biosurfactant produced by the novel marine strain Rhodococcus sp. SP1d and its potential for environmental applications

BACKGROUND

Biosurfactants are surface-active compounds with environmental and industrial applications. These molecules show higher biocompatibility, stability and efficiency compared to synthetic surfactants. On the other hand, biosurfactants are not cost-competitive to their chemical counterparts. Cost effective technology such as the use of low-cost substrates is a promising approach aimed at reducing the production cost. This study aimed to evaluate the biosurfactant production and activity by the novel strain Rhodococcus sp. SP1d by using different growth substrates. Therefore, to exploit the biosurfactant synthesized by SP1d for environmental applications, the effect of this compound on the bacteria biofilm formation was evaluated. Eventually, for a possible bioremediation application, the biosurfactant properties and its chemical characteristics were investigated using diesel as source of carbon.

RESULTS

Rhodococcus sp. SP1d evidence the highest similarity to Rhodococcus globerulus DSM 43954^T and the ability to biosynthesize surfactants using a wide range of substrates such as exhausted vegetable oil, mineral oil, butter, n-hexadecane, and diesel. The maximum production of crude biosurfactant after 10 days of incubation was reached on n-hexadecane and diesel with a final yield of 2.38 ± 0.51 and 1.86 ± 0.31 g L^- 1 respectively. Biosurfactants produced by SP1d enhanced the biofilm production of P. protegens MP12. Moreover, the results showed the ability of SP1d to produce biosurfactants on diesel even when grown at 10 and 18 °C. The biosurfactant activity was maintained over a wide range of NaCl concentration, pH, and temperature. A concentration of 1000 mg L^- 1 of the crude biosurfactant showed an emulsification activity of 55% towards both xylene and olive oil and a reduction of 25.0 mN m^- 1 of surface tension of water. Eventually, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy indicated that the biosurfactant is formed by trehalolipids.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of low-cost substrates such as exhausted oils and waste butter reduce both the costs of biosurfactant synthesis and the environmental pollution due to the inappropriate disposal of these residues. High production yields, stability and emulsification properties using diesel and n-hexadecane as substrates, make the biosurfactant produced by SP1d a sustainable biocompound for bioremediation purpose. Eventually, the purified biosurfactant improved the biofilm formation of the fungal antagonistic strain P. protegens MP12, and thus seem to be exploitable to increase the adherence and colonization of plant surfaces by this antagonistic strain and possibly enhance antifungal activity.

Oil spill remediation by biochar derived from bio-energy industries with a pilot-scale approach during the X-Press Pearl maritime disaster

Most traditional oil spill clean-up techniques are still laboratory based and are expensive and fairly ineffective. This study investigated the capacity of biochars derived from bio-energy industries in oil spill remediation with a pilot-testing. Three different biochars from bio-energy industries, Embilipitya (EBC), Mahiyanganaya (MBC), and Cinnamon Wood Biochar (CWBC) were assessed for the removal of Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) at three dosages (10, 25, and 50 g L^-1). Pilot-scale experiment was conducted with 100 g of biochars separately in the oil slick of X-Press Pearl shipwreck. All adsorbents exhibited rapid oil removal (within 30 min). Isotherm data were well explained by Sips isotherm model (R² > 0.98). The pilot-scale experiment resulted oil removal for CWBC, EBC and MBC as 0.62, 1.12, and 0.67 g kg^-1 respectively, even in rough sea conditions with a limited contact time (>5 min) indicates biochar's capacity in oil spill remediation as a cost-effective material.

Succession Patterns of Microbial Composition and Activity following the Diesel Spill in an Urban River

Diesel spills in freshwater systems have adverse impacts on the water quality and the shore wetland. Microbial degradation is the major and ultimate natural mechanism that can clean the diesel from the environment. However, which, and how fast, diesel-degrading microorganisms could degrade spilled diesel has not been well-documented in river water. Using a combination of 14C-/3H--based radiotracer assays, analytical chemistry, MiSeq sequencing, and simulation-based microcosm incubation approaches, we demonstrated succession patterns of microbial diesel-degrading activities, and bacterial and fungal community compositions. The biodegradation activities of alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were induced within 24 h after diesel addition, and reached their maximum after incubation for 7 days. Potential diesel-degrading bacteria Perlucidibaca, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Acidovorax, and Aquabacterium dominated the community initially (day 3 and day 7), but later community structure (day 21) was dominated by bacteria Ralstonia and Planctomyces. The key early fungi responders were Aspergillus, Mortierella, and Phaeoacremonium by day 7, whereas Bullera and Basidiobolus dominated the fungal community at day 21. These results directly characterize the rapid response of microbial community to diesel spills, and suggest that the progression of diesel microbial degradation is performed by the cooperative system of the versatile obligate diesel-degrading and some general heterotrophic microorganisms in river diesel spills.

Superhydrophobic polyurethane sponge for efficient water-oil emulsion separation and rapid solar-assisted highly viscous crude oil adsorption and recovery

Rapid and efficient cleaning of oily wastewater and high viscosity crude oil spills is still a global challenge. Conventional three-dimensional porous adsorbents are ineffective for oil-water separation in harsh environment and are restricted to the low fluidity of high viscosity crude oil at room temperature. Increasing temperature can enormously improve the fluidity of viscous crude oil. Herein, the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) /carbon black (CB) -modified polyurethane sponge (PU) were prepared by a simple one-step dip-coating method. PDMS/CB@PU (PCPU) exhibits high adsorption capacity to various oils and organic liquid (28.5-68.7 g/g), strong mechanical properties (500 cycles at 50%), outstanding reusability (100 cycles of adsorption and desorption) and excellent environmental stability due to the special PDMS/CB coating. The maximum surface temperature of PCPU sponge can reach 84.7 ℃ under 1 sunlight irradiation. Therefore, the PCPU sponge can rapidly heat and enhance the fluidity of viscous crude oil, significantly speeding up the viscous oil recovery process with the maximum adsorption capacity of 44.7 g/g. In addition, the PCPU sponge can also combine with the vacuum pump to realize the continuous and rapid repair of viscous oil spills from the seawater surface. In consideration of its simple preparation, cost-effectiveness and high oil absorption ability, this solar-assisted self-heating adsorbent provides a new direction for large-scale cleanup and recycling of viscous crude oil spill on the seawater surface.

Microplastic and oil pollutant agglomerates synergistically intensify toxicity in the marine fish, Asian seabass, Lates calcalifer

Asian seabass, Lates calcarifer frys were exposed to polystyrene (MP: 0.5 mg/l), oil (0.83 ml/l) and agglomerates (MP + oil + Corexit) as eight treatments in three replicates, and fresh synthetic marine water (control) for 15 days. The synergistic effect was confirmed (P ˂ 0.05) by bio-indicators including RBC count, total plasma protein, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST), basophils, thrombocyte and eosinophils percentages. Most of the significant and synergistic effects were observed in the highest doses (5 mg/l MP and 5 mg/l MP-oil-dispersant). Exposure to MP and a combination of MP+ oil caused tissue lesions in gill, liver and intestine. Our results suggest there are no critical health issues for Asian seabass in natural environments. However, the bioaccumulation of MPs, oil, and their agglomerates in consumers' bodies may remain a concern.

Batch-mode stimulation of hydrocarbons biodegradation in freshwater sediments from historically contaminated Alūksne lake

Historical contamination of freshwater lakes with hydrocarbons (HC) due to anthropogenic activities represents a serious problem worldwide. This study was focused on hydrocarbons-contaminated sediments sampled in Lake Alūksne of glacial origin in Northeast Latvia. The batch experiments were aimed at evaluating the effect of bio-stimulation and bioaugmentation on the biodegradation of hydrocarbons in lake sediments (LS), as well as changes in microbial community structure and metabolic activity. The sediments were sampled from two points of the lake, 4-5 m and 8 m depth, respectively. These samples slightly differed by colour, count of diatoms, microbial respiration intensity and colour intensity of 2,6- dichlorophenolindophenol. Nevertheless, the trend in biodegradation activity was similar for both LS samples. The concentration of HC in LS during the 32-day incubation decreased in average from 465 mg/kg to 165 mg/kg and 117.5 mg/kg in the LS amended with nutrients and nutrients+microbial community, respectively. Different treatment types of LS resulted in differences in microbial respiration and HC-degrading activity. The Shotgun sequencing has revealed the main phyla present in the intact LS being Proteobacteria (48.8%), Actinobacteria (24.4%), Firmicutes (10.4%) and Bacteroidetes (5.0%). Incubation of LS for 32 days resulted in increasing abundance of Proteobacteria from 48.8% in the raw LS to 58-62%, mainly due to the increase of Betaproteobacteria. The functional annotation of gene families revealed that the most abundant gene families were associated with ATP binding, metal ion, magnesium ion, sulfur cluster, zinc ion binding, DNA binding and other essential components for cell functioning. The Shannon biodiversity index of culturable microorganisms in EcoPlates™ ranged from 2.28 to 2.85. The data obtained in this study indicated that the suggested approach is a potent remediation technology for further ex situ scaling up.

Simulation of novel jellyfish type of process for bioremediation application

A bioinspired device was fabricated as a sustainable remedial method and its performance as a membrane-enzyme reactor with cyclic ultrafiltration was investigated. The body of the jellyfish-like device was composed of two parts: 1) Jellyfish arms: Mono and co-axial electrospinning have been utilized to synthesize the flexible parts (e.g., multilayer membrane PS-PVDF/PAN/PS-PVDF) used for immobilization of aliphatic degrading enzymes, and 2) Jellyfish tentacles: Hollow fiber membranes were selected for physical immobilization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degrading enzymes. To study the behavior of the membrane/enzyme reactor, the hollow fiber enzyme reactor with pulsation was operated by recycling an enzyme solution to assess ultrafiltration efficiency. A mathematical model was suggested to describe the experimental data obtained in this study to predict the effectiveness of the reactor for PAH removal. When testing the performance of the jellyfish-like device, those equipped with nanofibers with an oil sorption capacity of (10. ±0.7gdilbit/gfiber) were more effective at removing oil particles before they touched the hollow fiber membrane surface. Moreover, the reaction rate measured in a free soluble enzyme and a recirculating immobilized enzyme solution exhibited a slight difference in the kinetic parameter, K_m (0.03 and 0.021 mM) due to the internal diffusional resistance. Based on biodegradation studies, a synergistic effect between membrane adsorption, enzymatic degradation, and ultrafiltration was proposed for the removal of anthracene from the column of water.

Insights into the syntrophic microbial electrochemical oxidation of toluene: a combined chemical, electrochemical, taxonomical, functional gene-based, and metaproteomic approach

Biodegradation of aromatic hydrocarbons in anoxic contaminated environments is typically limited by the lack of bioavailable electron acceptors. Microbial electrochemical technologies (METs) are able to provide a virtually inexhaustible electron acceptor in the form of a solid electrode. Recently, we provided first experimental evidence for the syntrophic degradation of toluene in a continuous-flow bioelectrochemical reactor known as the "bioelectric well". Herein, we further analyzed the structure and function of the electroactive toluene-degrading microbiome using a suite of chemical, electrochemical, phylogenetic, proteomic, and functional gene-based analyses. The bioelectric well removed 83 ± 7 % of the toluene from the influent with a coulombic efficiency of 84 %. Cyclic voltammetry allowed to identify the formal potentials of four putative electron transfer sites, which ranged from -0.2 V to +0.1 V vs. SHE, consistent with outer membrane c-type cytochromes and pili of electroactive Geobacter species. The biofilm colonizing the surface of the anode was indeed highly enriched in Geobacter species. On the other hand, the planktonic communities thriving in the bulk of the reactor harbored aromatic hydrocarbons degraders and fermentative propionate-producing microorganisms, as revealed by phylogenetic and proteomic analyses. Most likely, propionate, acetate or other VFAs produced in the bulk liquid from the degradation of toluene were utilized as substrates by the electroactive biofilm. Interestingly, key-functional genes related to the degradation of toluene were found both in the biofilm and in the planktonic communities. Taken as a whole, the herein reported results highlight the importance of applying a comprehensive suite of techniques to unravel the complex cooperative metabolisms occurring in METs.

Development of a Hydrophobic Carbon Sponge Nanocomposite for Oil Spill Cleanup

Oil leaks (or spills) into the aquatic environment are considered a natural disaster and a severe environmental problem for the entire planet. Samples of polyurethane (PU) composites were prepared with high specific surface area carbon nanotubes (CNT) to investigate crude oil sorption. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), density measurements, and mechanical compression tests were used to characterize the polyurethane-carbon PU-CNT prepared samples. The spongy composites exhibited good mechanical behavior and a contact angle of up to 119°. The oleophilic character resulted in increased hydrophobicity, a homogeneous oil distribution inside the sponge, and a sorption capacity in a water/oil mixture of 41.82 g/g. Stress-strain curves of the prepared samples showed the good mechanical properties of the sponge, which maintained its stability after more than six sorption desorption cycles. The CNT-PU composites may prove very effective in solving oil pollution problems.

Emerging bio-dispersant and bioremediation technologies as environmentally friendly management responses toward marine oil spill: A comprehensive review

Marine oil spills emanating from wells, pipelines, freighters, tankers, and storage facilities draw public attention and necessitate quick and environmentally friendly response measures. It is sometimes feasible to contain the oil with booms and collect it with skimmers or burn it, but this is impracticable in many circumstances, and all that can be done without causing further environmental damage is adopting natural attenuation, particularly through microbial biodegradation. Biodegradation can be aided by carefully supplying biologically accessible nitrogen and phosphorus to alleviate some of the microbial growth constraints at the shoreline. This review discussed the characteristics of oil spills, origin, ecotoxicology, health impact of marine oils spills, and responses, including the variety of remedies and responses to oil spills using biological techniques. The different bioremediation and bio-dispersant treatment technologies are then described, with a focus on the use of green surfactants and their advances, benefits/drawbacks. These technologies were thoroughly explained, with a timeline of research and recent studies. Finally, the hurdles that persist as a result of spills are explored, as well as the measures that must be taken and the potential for the development of existing treatment technologies, all of which must be linked to the application of integrated procedures.

Snorkels enhance alkanes respiration at ambient and increased hydrostatic pressure (10 MPa) by either supporting the TCA cycle or limiting alternative routes for acetyl-CoA metabolism

The impact of piezosensitive microorganisms is generally underestimated in the ecology of underwater environments exposed to increasing hydrostatic pressure (HP), including the biodegradation of crude oil components. Yet, no isolated pressure-loving (piezophile) microorganism grows optimally on hydrocarbons, and no isolated piezophile at all has a HP optimum <10 MPa (e.g. 1000 m below sea water level). Piezosensitive heterotrophs are thus largely accountable for oil clean up < 10 MPa, however, they are affected by such a mild HP increase in ways which are not completely clear. In a first study, the application of a bioelectrochemical system (called "oil-spill snorkel") enhanced the alkane oxidation capacity in sediments collected at surface water but tested up to 10 MPa. Here, the fingerprint left on transcript abundance was studied to explore which metabolic routes are 1) supported by snorkels application and 2) negatively impacted by HP increase. Transcript abundance was comparable for beta-oxidation across all treatments (also at a taxonomical level), while the metabolism of acetyl-CoA was highly impacted: at either 0.1 or 10 MPa, snorkels supported acetyl-CoA oxidation within the TCA cycle, while in negative controls using non-conductive rods several alternative routes for acetyl-CoA were stimulated (including those leading to internal carbon reserves e.g. 2,3 butanediol and dihydroxyacetone). In general, increased HP had opposite effects as compared to snorkels, thus indicating that snorkels could enhance hydrocarbons oxidation by alleviating in part the stressing effects imposed by increased HP on the anaerobic, respiratory electron transport chain. 16S rRNA gene analysis of sediments and biofilms on snorkels suggest a crosstalk between oil-degrading, sulfate-reducing microorganisms and sulfur oxidizers. In fact, no sulfur was deposited on snorkels, however, iron, aluminum and phosphorous were found to preferentially deposit on snorkels at 10 MPa. This data indicates that a passive BES such as the oil-spill snorkel can mitigate the stress imposed by increased HP on piezosensitive microorganisms (up to 10 MPa) without being subjected to passivation. An improved setup applying these principles can further support this deep-sea bioremediation strategy.

Sustainable strategies for combating hydrocarbon pollution: Special emphasis on mobil oil bioremediation

The global rise in industrialization and vehicularization has led to the increasing trend in the use of different crude oil types. Among these mobil oil has major application in automobiles and different machines. The combustion of mobil oil renders a non-usable form that ultimately enters the environment thereby causing problems to environmental health. The aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon fraction of mobil oil has serious human and environmental health hazards. These components upon interaction with soil affect its fertility and microbial diversity. The recent advancement in the omics approach viz. metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics has led to increased efficiency for the use of microbial based remediation strategy. Additionally, the use of biosurfactants further aids in increasing the bioavailability and thus biodegradation of crude oil constituents. The combination of more than one approach could serve as an effective tool for efficient reduction of oil contamination from diverse ecosystems. To the best of our knowledge only a few publications on mobil oil have been published in the last decade. This systematic review could be extremely useful in designing a micro-bioremediation strategy for aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems contaminated with mobil oil or petroleum hydrocarbons that is both efficient and feasible. The state-of-art information and future research directions have been discussed to address the issue efficiently.

Pollution and edaphic factors shape bacterial community structure and functionality in historically contaminated soils

Studies about biodegradation potential in soils often refer to artificially contaminated and simplified systems, overlooking the complexity associated with contaminated sites in a real context. This work aims to provide a holistic view on microbiome assembly and functional diversity in the model site SIN Brescia-Caffaro (Italy), characterized by historical and uneven contamination by organic and inorganic compounds. Here, physical and chemical analyses and microbiota characterization were applied on one-hundred-twenty-seven soil samples to unravel the environmental factors driving bacterial community assembly and biodegradation potential in three former agricultural fields. Chemical analyses showed a patchy distribution of metals, metalloids and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and allowed soil categorization according to depth and area of collections. Likewise, the bacterial community structure, described by molecular fingerprinting and 16S rRNA gene analyses, was significantly different according to collection site and depth. Pollutant concentrations (i.e., hexachloro-biphenyls, arsenic and mercury), nitrogen content and parameters related to soil texture were identified as main drivers of microbiota assembly, being significantly correlated to bacterial community composition. Moreover, bacteria putatively involved in the aerobic degradation of PCBs were enriched over the total bacterial community in topsoils, where the highest activity was recorded using fluorescein hydrolysis as proxy. Metataxonomic analyses revealed the presence of bacteria having metabolic pathways related to PCB degradation and tolerance to heavy metals and metalloids in the topsoil samples collected in all areas. Overall, the provided dissection of soil microbiota structure and its degradation potential in the SIN Brescia-Caffaro can contribute to target specific areas for rhizoremediation implementation. Metagenomics studies could be implemented in the future to understand if specific degradative pathways are present in historically polluted sites characterized by the co-occurrence of multiple classes of contaminants.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Degradation in the Sea-Surface Microlayer at Coastal Antarctica

As much as 400 Tg of carbon from airborne semivolatile aromatic hydrocarbons is deposited to the oceans every year, the largest identified source of anthropogenic organic carbon to the ocean. Microbial degradation is a key sink of these pollutants in surface waters, but has received little attention in polar environments. We have challenged Antarctic microbial communities from the sea-surface microlayer (SML) and the subsurface layer (SSL) with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at environmentally relevant concentrations. PAH degradation rates and the microbial responses at both taxonomical and functional levels were assessed. Evidence for faster removal rates was observed in the SML, with rates 2.6-fold higher than in the SSL. In the SML, the highest removal rates were observed for the more hydrophobic and particle-bound PAHs. After 24 h of PAHs exposure, particle-associated bacteria in the SML showed the highest number of significant changes in their composition. These included significant enrichments of several hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria, especially the fast-growing genera Pseudoalteromonas, which increased their relative abundances by eightfold. Simultaneous metatranscriptomic analysis showed that the free-living fraction of SML was the most active fraction, especially for members of the order Alteromonadales, which includes Pseudoalteromonas. Their key role in PAHs biodegradation in polar environments should be elucidated in further studies. This study highlights the relevant role of bacterial populations inhabiting the sea-surface microlayer, especially the particle-associated habitat, as relevant bioreactors for the removal of aromatic hydrocarbons in the oceans.

A Review on Biotechnological Approaches Applied for Marine Hydrocarbon Spills Remediation

The increasing demand for petroleum products generates needs for innovative and reliable methods for cleaning up crude oil spills. Annually, several oil spills occur around the world, which brings numerous ecological and environmental disasters on the surface of deep seawaters like oceans. Biological and physico-chemical remediation technologies can be efficient in terms of spill cleanup and microorganisms—mainly bacteria—are the main ones responsible for petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) degradation such as crude oil. Currently, biodegradation is considered as one of the most sustainable and efficient techniques for the removal of PHCs. However, environmental factors associated with the functioning and performance of microorganisms involved in hydrocarbon-degradation have remained relatively unclear. This has limited our understanding on how to select and inoculate microorganisms within technologies of cleaning and to optimize physico-chemical remediation and degradation methods. This review article presents the latest discoveries in bioremediation techniques such as biostimulation, bioaugmentation, and biosurfactants as well as immobilization strategies for increasing the efficiency. Besides, environmental affecting factors and microbial strains engaged in bioremediation and biodegradation of PHCs in marines are discussed.

Nanobioremediation: A sustainable approach for the removal of toxic pollutants from the environment

In recent years, the proportion of organic and inorganic contaminants has increased rapidly due to growing human interference and represents a threat to ecosystems. The removal of these toxic pollutants from the environment is a difficult task. Physical, chemical and biological methods are implemented for the degradation of toxic pollutants from the environment. Among existing technologies, bioremediation in combination with nanotechnology is the most promising and cost-effective method for the removal of pollutants. Numerous studies have shown that exceptional characteristics of nanomaterials such as improved catalysis and adsorption properties as well as high reactivity have been subjects of great interest. There is an emerging trend of employing bacterial, fungal and algal cultures and their components, extracts or biomolecules as catalysts for the sustainable production of nanomaterials. They can serve as facilitators in the bioremediation of toxic compounds by immobilizing or inducing the synthesis of remediating microbial enzymes. Understanding the association between microorganisms, contaminants and nanoparticles (NPs) is of crucial importance. In this review, we focus on the removal of toxic pollutants using the cumulative effects of nanoparticles with microbial technology and their applications in different domains. Besides, we discuss how this novel nanobioremediation technique is significant and contributes towards sustainability.

Bacterial community structure and diversity along the halocline of Tyro deep-sea hypersaline anoxic basin

Purpose

Tyro is a deep hypersaline anoxic basin (DHAB) located at the seafloor of the Eastern Mediterranean sea. Tyro hosts a stratified eukaryotic microbiome moving from seawater to the brine, but no reports are available on its prokaryotic community. We provide the first snapshot of the bacterial community structure in Tyro brine, seawater-brine interface, and the overlaying deep seawater.

Methods

In this study, we combined the use of molecular analyses, i.e., DNA fingerprinting and 16S rRNA pyrosequencing for the description of the bacterial community structure and taxonomy. PiCRUST2 was used to infer information on the prokaryotes functional diversity. A culture-dependent approach was applied to enrich bacteria of interest for marine biotechnology.

Results

Bacterial communities sharply clustered moving from the seawater to the Tyro brine, in agreement with the abrupt increase of salinity values. Moreover, specific taxonomic groups inhabited the seawater-brine interface compared to the overlaying seawater and their identification revealed converging taxonomy with other DHABs in the Eastern Mediterranean sea. Functional traits inferred from the prokaryote taxonomy in the upper interface and the overlaying seawater indicated metabolic pathways for the synthesis of osmoprotectants, likely involved in bacterial adaptation to the steep increasing salinity. Metabolic traits related to methane and methylated compounds and to hydrocarbon degradation were also revealed in the upper interface of Tyro. The overall capability of the Tyro microbiome for hydrocarbon metabolism was confirmed by the isolation of hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria in the sediments.

Conclusions

Our results suggest that Tyro seawater-brine interface hosts a specific microbiome adapted to the polyextreme condition typical of DHABs with potential metabolic features that could be further explored for the characterization of the metabolic network connecting the brine with the deep seawater through the chemocline. Moreover, Tyro could be a reservoir of culturable microbes endowed with functionalities of interest for biotechnological applications like hydrocarbon bioremediation.

Optimization of the Biodegradation of Aliphatic, Aromatic, and UCM Hydrocarbons from Light Crude Oil in Marine Sediment Using Response Surface Methodology (RSM)

This study describes the optimization of the biodegradation of total aliphatic (tAHCs), total aromatic (tPAHs), and unresolved complex mixture (UCM) hydrocarbons from light crude oil in marine sediment. The response surface methodology (RSM), with a Box-Behnken design, was used to optimize the hydrocarbon fraction degradation, reported as degradation efficiency (E (%)), using four independent variables (inoculum, dispersant, light oil concentration, and carbon/nitrogen ratio), all at three levels. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed R² values of 0.976, 0.974, and 0.975 for tAHCs, tPAHs, and UCM, respectively. All fractions exhibited a statistically significant effect (P < 0.05) in the second-order quadratic regression model for degradation. According to the models, the optimal degradation prediction was: 81.03% for tAHCs, 85.96% for tPAHs, and 92.86% for UCM. This work highlights the possibility of carrying out efficient biodegradation, of more than 80%, through an optimization process using different light oil concentrations, opening up possibilities of multiple response optimization.

Microbial Community Dynamics during Biodegradation of Crude Oil and Its Response to Biostimulation in Svalbard Seawater at Low Temperature

The development of oil exploration activities and an increase in shipping in Arctic areas have increased the risk of oil spills in this cold marine environment. The objective of this experimental study was to assess the effect of biostimulation on microbial community abundance, structure, dynamics, and metabolic potential for oil hydrocarbon degradation in oil-contaminated Arctic seawater. The combination of amplicon-based and shotgun sequencing, together with the integration of genome-resolved metagenomics and omics data, was applied to assess microbial community structure and metabolic properties in naphthenic crude oil-amended microcosms. The comparison of estimates for oil-degrading microbial taxa obtained with different sequencing and taxonomic assignment methods showed substantial discrepancies between applied methods. Consequently, the data acquired with different methods was integrated for the analysis of microbial community structure, and amended with quantitative PCR, producing a more objective description of microbial community dynamics and evaluation of the effect of biostimulation on particular microbial taxa. Implementing biostimulation of the seawater microbial community with the addition of nutrients resulted in substantially elevated prokaryotic community abundance (103-fold), a distinctly different bacterial community structure from that in the initial seawater, 1.3-fold elevation in the normalized abundance of hydrocarbon degradation genes, and 12% enhancement of crude oil biodegradation. The bacterial communities in biostimulated microcosms after four months of incubation were dominated by Gammaproteobacterial genera Pseudomonas, Marinomonas, and Oleispira, which were succeeded by Cycloclasticus and Paraperlucidibaca after eight months of incubation. The majority of 195 compiled good-quality metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) exhibited diverse hydrocarbon degradation gene profiles. The results reveal that biostimulation with nutrients promotes naphthenic oil degradation in Arctic seawater, but this strategy alone might not be sufficient to effectively achieve bioremediation goals within a reasonable timeframe.

Understanding the Impacts of Blue Economy Growth on Deep-Sea Ecosystem Services

The deep sea is the vastest environment on Earth and provides many services and goods. Understanding the services and goods of deep-sea ecosystems would enable better resource governance and decision-making. In the present study, we reviewed and assessed deep-sea ecosystems services using the Ma conceptual framework, which incorporates ecosystems services and goods with human welfare. We also analyzed and measured the scientific production between 2012 and 2021 using the Dimension dataset. The bibliometric analysis showed a lack of studies related to deep-sea ecosystem services, which suggest the urgent need to overcome the existing knowledge gap regarding deep-sea components. However, the current knowledge revealed the crucial role that these ecosystems provide to the planet. Furthermore, we highlighted that there are common services and goods, and every ecosystem service feeds into another one. Developing actions and policies based on approaches that combine all deep-sea ecosystems services and goods are needed for the sustainable growth of the deep-sea economy in accordance with the United Nations Development Goal 14: Life Below Water.

Efficiency and kinetics of Assam crude oil degradation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus sp

We report kinetics of Assam crude oil degradation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa AKS1 and Bacillus sp. AKS2, both isolated from Assam refinery sediments. The isolates exhibited appreciable degrees of hydrophobicity, emulsification index and biosurfactant production. Crude oil degradation efficiency of isolates was assessed in (1) liquid medium amended with 1% v/v crude oil and (2) microcosm sediments (125 mg crude oil/ 10 g sand). In liquid culture, biodegradation rate (k) and half-life (t_1/2) values were found to be 0.038 day^-1 and 18.09 days for P. aeruginosa AKS1, and 0.020 day^-1 and 33.97 days in case of Bacillus sp. AKS2, respectively. In microcosm sediments, the estimated k and t _1/2 values were 0.014 day^-1 and 50 days for P. aeruginosa AKS1, and 0.011 day^-1 and 61.34 days in case of Bacillus sp. AKS2. The level of nutrient treatment in microcosm sand sediment was 125 µg N and 62.5 µg P/g sediment in case of P. aeruginosa AKS1 and 375 µg N and 37.5 µg P/g sediment in case of Bacillus sp. AKS2. In microcosms without inorganic nutrients, values of k and t_1/2 were found to be 0.007 day^-1 and 100 days for P. aeruginosa AKS1 and for Bacillus sp. AKS2, the respective values were 0.005 day^-1 and 150.68 days. Our data provides important information for predictive hydrocarbon degradation in liquid medium and contaminated sediments.

Bioremediation perspectives and progress in petroleum pollution in the marine environment: a review

The marine environment is often affected by petroleum hydrocarbon pollution due to industrial activities and petroleum accidents. This pollution has recalcitrant and persistent compounds that pose a high risk to the ecological system and human health. For this reason, the world claims to seek to clean up these pollutants. Bioremediation is an attractive approach for removing petroleum pollution. It is considered a low-cost and highly effective approach with fewer side effects compared to chemical and physical techniques. This depends on the metabolic capability of microorganisms involved in the degradation of hydrocarbons through enzymatic reactions. Bioremediation activities mostly depend on environmental conditions such as temperature, pH, salinity, pressure, and nutrition availability. Understanding the effects of environmental conditions on microbial hydrocarbon degraders and microbial interactions with hydrocarbon compounds could be assessed for the successful degradation of petroleum pollution. The current review provides a critical view of petroleum pollution in seawater, the bioavailability of petroleum compounds, the contribution of microorganisms in petroleum degradation, and the mechanisms of degradation under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. We consider different biodegradation approaches such as biostimulation, bioaugmentation, and phytoremediation.

Biotechnological applications of marine bacteria in bioremediation of environments polluted with hydrocarbons and plastics

Marine ecosystems are some of the most adverse environments on Earth and contain a considerable portion of the global bacterial population, and some of these bacterial species play pivotal roles in several biogeochemical cycles. Marine bacteria have developed different molecular mechanisms to address fluctuating environmental conditions, such as changes in nutrient availability, salinity, temperature, pH, and pressure, making them attractive for use in diverse biotechnology applications. Although more than 99% of marine bacteria cannot be cultivated with traditional microbiological techniques, several species have been successfully isolated and grown in the laboratory, facilitating investigations of their biotechnological potential. Some of these applications may contribute to addressing some current global problems, such as environmental contamination by hydrocarbons and synthetic plastics. In this review, we first summarize and analyze recently published information about marine bacterial diversity. Then, we discuss new literature regarding the isolation and characterization of marine bacterial strains able to degrade hydrocarbons and petroleum-based plastics, and species able to produce biosurfactants. We also describe some current limitations for the implementation of these biotechnological tools, but also we suggest some strategies that may contribute to overcoming them. Metatranscriptomics for the Human Microbiome and Microbial Community Functional Profiling

Shotgun metatranscriptomics (MTX) is an increasingly practical way to survey microbial community gene function and regulation at scale. This review begins by summarizing the motivations for community transcriptomics and the history of the field. We then explore the principles, best practices, and challenges of contemporary MTX workflows: beginning with laboratory methods for isolation and sequencing of community RNA, followed by informatics methods for quantifying RNA features, and finally statistical methods for detecting differential expression in a community context. In thesecond half of the review, we survey important biological findings from the MTX literature, drawing examples from the human microbiome, other (nonhuman) host-associated microbiomes, and the environment. Across these examples, MTX methods prove invaluable for probing microbe-microbe and host-microbe interactions, the dynamics of energy harvest and chemical cycling, and responses to environmental stresses. We conclude with a review of open challenges in the MTX field, including making assays and analyses more robust, accessible, and adaptable to new technologies; deciphering roles for millions of uncharacterized microbial transcripts; and solving applied problems such as biomarker discovery and development of microbial therapeutics.

A review on physical remediation techniques for treatment of marine oil spills

There is a huge risk of contamination of water bodies due to the various oil exploration, transport, and industrial operational activities that are taking place across the world. Physical remediation techniques are considered extremely important for tackling the problems of marine oil spills. This paper provides a unique, specific review on the physical remediation of marine oil spills with special emphasis on types of available physical remediation techniques and their working principles. It also describes the chief latest improvements in the physical remediation techniques that have taken place with time. The paper discusses the various ways by which oil and its derivatives contaminate, and the subsequent effects these contaminants have on the marine ecosystem. The article discusses salient features that make physical remediation an effective marine oil spill counter-measure capable of recovering appreciable amounts of oil while causing minimal or no damage to the marine ecosystem and the workers carrying out the cleanup. Regarding the physical remediation methods, future research may focus on the development of hybrid booms, improved performance of skimmers for different oil types, and further applications involving novel materials like nanoparticles, zeolites for sorbents.

Port Sediments: Problem or Resource? A Review Concerning the Treatment and Decontamination of Port Sediments by Fungi and Bacteria

Contamination of marine sediments by organic and/or inorganic compounds represents one of the most critical problems in marine environments. This issue affects not only biodiversity but also ecosystems, with negative impacts on sea water quality. The scientific community and the European Commission have recently discussed marine environment and ecosystem protection and restoration by sustainable green technologies among the main objectives of their scientific programmes. One of the primary goals of sustainable restoration and remediation of contaminated marine sediments is research regarding new biotechnologies employable in the decontamination of marine sediments, to consider sediments as a resource in many fields such as industry. In this context, microorganisms—in particular, fungi and bacteria—play a central and crucial role as the best tools of sustainable and green remediation processes. This review, carried out in the framework of the Interreg IT-FR Maritime GEREMIA Project, collects and shows the bioremediation and mycoremediation studies carried out on marine sediments contaminated with ecotoxic metals and organic pollutants. This work evidences the potentialities and limiting factors of these biotechnologies and outlines the possible future scenarios of the bioremediation of marine sediments, and also highlights the opportunities of an integrated approach that involves fungi and bacteria together.

Metagenomics and Quantitative Stable Isotope Probing Offer Insights into Metabolism of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Degraders in Chronically Polluted Seawater

Bacterial biodegradation is a significant contributor to remineralization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-toxic and recalcitrant components of crude oil as well as by-products of partial combustion chronically introduced into seawater via atmospheric deposition. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill demonstrated the speed at which a seed PAH-degrading community maintained by chronic inputs responds to acute pollution. We investigated the diversity and functional potential of a similar seed community in the chronically polluted Port of Los Angeles (POLA), using stable isotope probing with naphthalene, deep-sequenced metagenomes, and carbon incorporation rate measurements at the port and in two sites in the San Pedro Channel. We demonstrate the ability of the community of degraders at the POLA to incorporate carbon from naphthalene, leading to a quick shift in microbial community composition to be dominated by the normally rare Colwellia and Cycloclasticus We show that metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) belonged to these naphthalene degraders by matching their 16S-rRNA gene with experimental stable isotope probing data. Surprisingly, we did not find a full PAH degradation pathway in those genomes, even when combining genes from the entire microbial community, leading us to hypothesize that promiscuous dehydrogenases replace canonical naphthalene degradation enzymes in this site. We compared metabolic pathways identified in 29 genomes whose abundance increased in the presence of naphthalene to generate genomic-based recommendations for future optimization of PAH bioremediation at the POLA, e.g., ammonium as opposed to urea, heme or hemoproteins as an iron source, and polar amino acids.IMPORTANCE Oil spills in the marine environment have a devastating effect on marine life and biogeochemical cycles through bioaccumulation of toxic hydrocarbons and oxygen depletion by hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria. Oil-degrading bacteria occur naturally in the ocean, especially where they are supported by chronic inputs of oil or other organic carbon sources, and have a significant role in degradation of oil spills. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are the most persistent and toxic component of crude oil. Therefore, the bacteria that can break those molecules down are of particular importance. We identified such bacteria at the Port of Los Angeles (POLA), one of the busiest ports worldwide, and characterized their metabolic capabilities. We propose chemical targets based on those analyses to stimulate the activity of these bacteria in case of an oil spill in the Port POLA.

Harnessing the Potential of Native Microbial Communities for Bioremediation of Oil Spills in the Iberian Peninsula NW Coast

Oil spills are among the most catastrophic events to marine ecosystems and current remediation techniques are not suitable for ecological restoration. Bioremediation approaches can take advantage of the activity of microorganisms with biodegradation capacity thus helping to accelerate the recovery of contaminated environments. The use of native microorganisms can increase the bioremediation efficiency since they have higher potential to survive in the natural environment while preventing unpredictable ecological impacts associated with the introduction of non-native organisms. In order to know the geographical scale to which a native bioremediation consortium can be applied, we need to understand the spatial heterogeneity of the natural microbial communities with potential for hydrocarbon degradation. In the present study, we aim to describe the genetic diversity and the potential of native microbial communities to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons, at an early stage of bioremediation, along the NW Iberian Peninsula coast, an area particularly susceptible to oil spills. Seawater samples collected in 47 sites were exposed to crude oil for 2 weeks, in enrichment experiments. Seawater samples collected in situ, and samples collected after the enrichment with crude oil, were characterized for prokaryotic communities by using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and predictive functional profiling. Results showed a drastic decrease in richness and diversity of microbial communities after the enrichment with crude oil. Enriched microbial communities were mainly dominated by genera known to degrade hydrocarbons, namely Alcanivorax, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Rhodococcus, Flavobacterium, Oleibacter, Marinobacter, and Thalassospira, without significant differences between geographic areas and locations. Predictive functional profiling of the enriched microbial consortia showed a high potential to degrade the aromatic compounds aminobenzoate, benzoate, chlorocyclohexane, chlorobenzene, ethylbenzene, naphthalene, polycyclic aromatic compounds, styrene, toluene, and xylene. Only a few genera contributed for more than 50% of this genetic potential for aromatic compounds degradation in the enriched communities, namely Alcanivorax, Thalassospira, and Pseudomonas spp. This work is a starting point for the future development of prototype consortia of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria to mitigate oil spills in the Iberian NW coast.

Polyurethane Foams Loaded with Carbon Nanofibers for Oil Spill Recovery: Mechanical Properties under Fatigue Conditions and Selective Absorption in Oil/Water Mixtures

Marine pollution due to spillage of hydrocarbons represents a well-known current environmental problem. In order to recover the otherwise wasted oils and to prevent pollution damage, polyurethane foams are considered suitable materials for their ability to separate oils from sea-water and for their reusability. In this work we studied polyurethane foams filled with carbon nanofibers, in varying amounts, aimed at enhancing the selectivity of the material towards the oils and at improving the mechanical durability of the foam. Polyurethane-based foams were experimentally characterized by morphological, surface, and mechanical analyses (optical microscopy observation, contact angle measurement, absorption test according to ASTM F726-99 standard and compression fatigue tests according to ISO 24999 standard). Results indicated an increase in hydrophobic behavior and a good oleophilic character of the composite sponges besides an improved selective absorption of the foam toward oils in mixed water/oil media. The optimal filler amount was found to be around 1 wt% for the homogeneous distribution inside the polymeric foam. Finally, the fatigue test results showed an improvement of the mechanical properties of the foam with the growing carbon filler amount.

Fabrication of hydrophobic NiFe2O4@poly(DVB-LMA) sponge via a Pickering emulsion template method for oil/water separation

Super-hydrophobic porous absorbents are convenient, low-cost, efficient and environment-friendly materials in the treatment of oil spills. In this work, a simple Pickering emulsion template method was employed to fabricate an interconnected porous poly(DVB-LMA) sponge. A new co-Pickering stabilization system of Span 80 and NiFe2O4 nanoparticles was used to prepare ultra-concentrated internal phase water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions. After further polymerization, the resulting sponges were generated, which exhibited excellent adsorption selectivity due to the super-hydrophobicity and super-lipophilicity. Furthermore, the characterization results indicated that the composites had superior thermal stability, low density, high porosity and a flexible three-dimensional porous structure. Besides, the addition of nickel ferrite nanoparticles provided the materials with extra magnetic operability. High oil adsorption capacity (up to 36.9-84.2 g g-1), high oil retention, fast adsorption rate and superior reusability allowed the materials to be applied in the treatment of oily water.

Performance and microbial community analysis of bioaugmented activated sludge for nitrogen-containing organic pollutants removal

Nitrogen-containing organic pollutants (quinoline, pyridine and indole) are widely distributed in coking wastewater, and bioaugmentation with specific microorganisms may enhance the removal of these recalcitrant pollutants. The bioaugmented system (group B) was constructed through inoculation of two aromatics-degrading bacteria, Comamonas sp. Z1 (quinoline degrader) and Acinetobacter sp. JW (indole degrader), into the activated sludge for treatment of quinoline, indole and pyridine, and the non-bioaugmented activated sludge was used as the control (group C). Both groups maintained high efficiencies (> 94%) for removal of nitrogen-containing organic pollutants and chemical oxygen demand (COD) during the long-term operation, and group B was highly effective at the starting period and the operation stage fed with raw wastewater. High-throughput sequencing analysis indicated that nitrogen-containing organic pollutants could shape the microbial community structure, and communities of bioaugmented group B were clearly separated from those of non-bioaugmented group C as observed in non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) plot. Although the inoculants did not remain their dominance in group B, bioaugmentation could induce the formation of effective microbial community, and the indigenous microbes might play the key role in removal of nitrogen-containing organic pollutants, including Dokdonella, Comamonas and Pseudoxanthomonas. Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States (PICRUSt) analysis suggested that bioaugmentation could facilitate the enrichment of functional genes related to xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism, probably leading to the improved performance in group B. This study indicated that bioaugmentation could promote the removal of nitrogen-containing organic pollutants, which should be an effective strategy for wastewater treatment.

Toxicity Profiling of Biosurfactants Produced by Novel Marine Bacterial Strains

Surface active agents (SAAs), currently used in modern industry, are synthetic chemicals produced from non-renewable sources, with potential toxic impacts on humans and the environment. Thus, there is an increased interest for the identification and utilization of natural derived SAAs. As such, the marine environment is considered a promising source of biosurfactants with low toxicity, environmental compatibility, and biodegradation compared to their synthetic counterparts. MARISURF is a Horizon 2020 EU-funded project aiming to identify and functionally characterize SAAs, derived from a unique marine bacterial collection, towards commercial exploitation. Specifically, rhamnolipids produced by Marinobacter MCTG107b and Pseudomonas MCTG214(3b1) strains were previously identified and characterized while currently their toxicity profile was assessed by utilizing well-established methodologies. Our results showed a lack of cytotoxicity in in vitro models of human skin and liver as indicated by alamar blue and propidium iodide assays. Additionally, the use of the single gel electrophoresis assay, under oxidative stress conditions, revealed absence of any significant mutagenic/anti-mutagenic potential. Finally, both 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonicacid) (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) cell-free assays, revealed no significant anti-oxidant capacity for neither of the tested compounds. Consequently, the absence of significant cytotoxicity and/or mutagenicity justifies their commercial exploitation and potential development into industrial end-user applications as natural and environmentally friendly biosurfactants.
