High-silica zeolites for adsorption of organic micro-pollutants in water treatment: A review

Performance of magnetic nanocomposite based on xanthan gum-grafted-poly(acrylamide) crosslinked by borax for the effective elimination of amoxicillin from aquatic environments

This study evaluated the effectiveness of using nanocomposite (NCs) of xanthan gum grafted polyacrylamide crosslinked Borax - iron oxide nanoparticle (XG-g-pAAm-CL-Borax-IONP) to remove the amoxicillin antibiotic (AMX) from an aquatic environment. To confirm the structural characteristics of the prepared XG-g-pAAm-CL-Borax-IONP NCs, unique characterization methods (XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDX, BET, TGA, Zeta, and VSM) were used. Adsorption experimental setups were performed with the influence of solution pH (4-9), the effect of adsorbent dose (0.003-0.02 g), the effect of contact time (5-45 min), and the effect of initial AMX concentration (50-400 mg/L) to achieve the most efficient adsorption conditions. Based on the Freundlich isotherm model, XG-g-pAAm-CL-Borax-IONP NCs provided the maximum AMX adsorption capacity of 1183.639 mg/g. This research on adsorption kinetics also established that the pseudo-second-order model (R2 = 0.991) is outstanding compatibility with the experimental results. AMX adsorption on the NCs may occur through intermolecular hydrogen bonding, diffusion, and trapping into the polymer network. Even after five cycles, these NCs still displayed the best performance. Based on these results, XG-g-pAAm-CL-Borax-IONP NCs may be a viable material for the purification of AMX from contaminated water.

Monte Carlo Simulations of Water Pollutant Adsorption at Parts-per-Billion Concentration: A Study on 1,4-Dioxane

1,4-dioxane, an emerging water pollutant with high production volumes, is a probable human carcinogen. The inadequacy of conventional treatment processes demonstrates the need for an effective remediation strategy. Crystalline nanoporous materials are cost-effective adsorbents due to their high capacity and selective separation in mixtures. This study explores the potential of all-silica zeolites for the separation of 1,4-dioxane from water. These zeolites are highly hydrophobic and can preferentially adsorb nonpolar molecules from mixtures. We investigated six zeolite frameworks (BEA, EUO, FER, IFR, MFI, and MOR) using Monte Carlo simulations in the Gibbs ensemble. The simulations indicate high selectivity by FER and EUO, especially at low pressures, which we attribute to pore sizes and shapes with a greater affinity to 1,4-dioxane. We also demonstrate a Monte Carlo simulation workflow using gauge cells to model the adsorption of an aqueous solution of 1,4-dioxane at a 0.35 ppb concentration. We quantify 1,4-dioxane and water coadsorption and observe selectivities ranging from 1.1 × 105 in MOR to 8.7 × 106 in FER. We also demonstrate that 1,4-dioxane is in the infinite dilution regime in the aqueous phase at this concentration. This simulation technique can be extended to model other emerging water contaminants such as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), chlorofluorocarbons, and others, which are also found in extremely low concentrations.

Advancements in nanoparticle-modified zeolites for sustainable water treatment: An interdisciplinary review

The contamination of water sources with heavy metals, dyes, and other pollutants poses significant challenges to environmental sustainability and public health. Traditional water treatment methods often exhibit limitations in effectively addressing these complex contaminants. In response, recent developments in nanotechnology have catalyzed the exploration of novel materials for water remediation, with nanoparticle-doped zeolites emerging as a promising solution. This comprehensive review synthesizes current literature on the integration of nanoparticles into zeolite frameworks for enhanced contaminant removal in water treatment applications. We delve into synthesis methodologies, elucidate mechanistic insights, and evaluate the efficacy of nanoparticle-doped zeolites in targeting specific pollutants, while also assessing considerations of material stability and environmental impact. The review underscores the superior adsorptive and catalytic properties of nanoparticle-doped zeolites, owing to their high surface area, tailored porosity, and enhanced ion-exchange capabilities. Furthermore, we highlight recent advancements in heavy metal and organic pollutant uptake facilitated by these materials. Additionally, we explore the catalytic degradation of contaminants through advanced oxidation processes, demonstrating the multifunctionality of nanoparticle-doped zeolites in water treatment. By providing a comprehensive analysis of existing research, this review aims to guide future developments in the field, promoting the sustainable utilization of nanoparticle-doped zeolites as efficient and versatile materials for water remediation endeavors.

Studying the adsorption of emerging organic contaminants in zeolites with dispersion-corrected density functional theory calculations: From numbers to recommendations

Adsorption energies obtained from dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT) calculations show a considerable dependence on the choice of exchange-correlation functional and dispersion correction. A number of investigations have employed different approaches to compute adsorption energies of small molecules in zeolites, using reference values from high-level calculations and/or experiments. Such comparative studies are lacking for larger functional organic molecules such as pharmaceuticals or personal care products, despite their potential relevance for applications, e. g., in contaminant removal or drug delivery. The present study aims to fill this gap by comparing adsorption energies and, for selected cases, equilibrium structures of emerging organic contaminants adsorbed in MOR- and FAU-type all-silica zeolites. A total of 13 dispersion-corrected DFT approaches are compared, including methods using a pairwise dispersion correction as well as non-local van der Waals density functionals. While absolute values of adsorption energies vary widely, qualitative trends across the set of zeolite-guest combinations are not strongly dependent on the choice of functional. For selected cluster models, DFT adsorption energies are compared to reference values from coupled cluster (DLPNO-CCSD(T)) calculations. Although all DFT approaches deliver systematically more negative adsorption energies than the coupled cluster reference, this tendency is least pronounced for the rev-vdW-DF2 functional.

The Synthesis of Amino-Acid-Anchored Two-Dimensional Silicoaluminophosphates and Congo Red Adsorption Application

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with nanometer thickness have the advantage of a large specific surface area and excellent surface accessibility. They have great potential for adsorption, catalysis, and many other applications. 2D zeolitic silicoaluminophosphates (SAPOs) can be synthesized through a dual structure directing agent (SDA) strategy. But the materials have been primarily used in their organic-free form. In this work, we demonstrate that the same synthesis strategy is effective for developing amino-acid-anchored 2D SAPOs through a one-step synthesis. Because of the addition of amino acids, the surficial amino and carboxylic groups serve as active sites for adsorption and catalysis. Congo red adsorption is used to evaluate the potential of using the organic functional groups as active adsorption sites. The 2D SAPO materials have demonstrated excellent Congo red removal efficiency with close to complete removal for certain concentrations. The effects of the amino acid concentration and hydrothermal synthesis time on material morphology development will be discussed. Thorough characterization by SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, and nitrogen adsorption has been done to reveal the properties of the amino-acid-anchored 2D SAPOs.

Application of catalytic ozonation using Y zeolite in the elimination of pharmaceuticals in effluents from municipal wastewater treatment plants

Catalytic ozonation using faujasite-type Y zeolite with two different SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratios (60 and 12) was evaluated for the first time in the removal of 25 pharmaceutical compounds (PhCs) present in real effluents from two municipal wastewater treatment plants both located in the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Additionally, control experiments including adsorption and direct ozonation, were conducted to better understand the fundamental aspects of the different individual systems in wastewater samples. Commercial zeolites were used in sodium form (NaY). The results showed that the simultaneous use of ozone and NaY zeolites significantly improved the micropollutants degradation rate, able to degrade 95 % of the total mixture of PhCs within the early 9 min using the zeolite NaY-12 (24.4 mg O3 L-1 consumed), while 12 min of reaction with the zeolite NaY-60 (31 mg O3 L-1 consumed). In the case of individual experiments, ozonation removed 95 % of the total mixture of PhCs after 25 min (46.2 mg O3 L-1 consumed), while the direct adsorption, after 60 min of contact time, eliminated 30 % and 44 % using the NaY-12 and NaY-60 zeolites, respectively. Results showed that the Brønsted acid sites seemed to play an important role in the effectiveness of the treatment with ozone. Finally, the environmental assessment showed that the total risk quotients of pharmaceuticals were reduced between 87 %-99 % after ozonation in the presence of NaY-60 and NaY-12 zeolites. The results of this study demonstrate that catalytic ozonation using NaY zeolites as catalysts is a promising alternative for micropollutant elimination in real-world wastewater matrices.

Basic magnesium sulfate@TiO2 composite for efficient adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of 4-dodecylmorpholine in brine

More than 70% of the potash fertilizer globally is produced by the froth flotation process, in which 4-dodecylmorpholine (DMP) serves as a reverse flotation agent. As the potash fertilizer production rapidly rises, the increased DMP levels in discharged brine pose a threat to the production of high-value chemicals. In this paper, composite particles of basic magnesium sulfate@TiO2 (BMS@TiO2) were prepared using a simple and mild loading method. These particles were utilized for the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of DMP in brine. Compared with normal powdered materials, the granular BMS@TiO2 in this study can be easily separated from liquid, and the degradation intermediates will not enter the brine without causing secondary pollution. BMS@TiO2 consists of 5·1·7 phase (5Mg(OH)2·MgSO4·7H2O) whisker clusters embedding 2.3% TiO2. The adsorption equilibrium of DMP on BMS@TiO2 particles was achieved through hydrogen bonding and pore interception with the adsorption capacity of approximately 5 mg g-1 after 6 h. The photodegradation efficiency of DMP adsorbed on BMS@TiO2 reached about 92% within 16 h, which is compared with that of pure TiO2 nanoparticles. Additionally, excellent stability and recyclability of BMS@TiO2 were also observed in five cycle tests of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of DMP, and the possible photocatalytic degradation pathways and mechanism of DMP are proposed following molecular electrostatic potential analysis. This work provides a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach for eliminating organic micropollutants from water environments.

Effect of zeolites on the reduction of the ecotoxicity of carbamazepine in the environment

In this study, the impact of calcination of zeolites on the ecotoxicity of carbamazepine solutions in two matrices, water and synthetic sewage, was assessed. Two types of zeolites were tested: natural zeolite, in the form of a zeolite rock consisting mainly of clinoptilolite, and a synthetic zeolite type 5 A. Additionally, zeolites were calcined at a temperature of 200 °C. The kinetics of carbamazepine adsorption in aqueous solutions and in synthetic sewage matrix was determined. Higher adsorption capacity was obtained for carbamazepine aqueous solutions as well as zeolites after the calcination process. Considering type of zeolite, the highest and fastest uptake of carbamazepine was observed for natural zeolite after calcination. In the case of ecotoxicity, carbamazepine solutions before adsorption was the most toxic towards Raphidocelis subcapitata, next Aliivibrio fischeri and Daphnia magna, regardless to the matrix type. The differentiation in toxicity regarding the type of matrix was observed, in the case of algae and bacteria, higher toxicity was demonstrated by carbamazepine solutions in the water matrix, while in the case of crustaceans-the sewage matrix. After the adsorption process, the toxicity of carbamazepine solutions on zeolites decreased by 34.5-60.9 % for R. subcapitata, 33-39 % for A. fischeri and 55-60 % for D. magna, thus confirming the effectiveness of the proposed method of carbamazepine immobilization.

Tannery sludge valorization through zeolite-assisted anaerobic process for short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production

Tannery sludge, a challenging waste, was utilized as a substrate for the production of Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs) through a series of six thermophilic Continuous Stirred-Tank Reactor runs. The sludge was subjected to a mild thermal pre-treatment and incorporated zeolites (chabazite in run II, and clinoptilolite in run III) in the acidification process. Results highlighted zeolites' impact on chromium concentration and the SCFAs/CODSOL ratio. Ammonia release remained consistent at around 47 % and 51 % for run I and II, respectively, but surpassed 60% in run III, suggesting limited zeolite effectiveness in NH4 absorption. Chromium release in the liquid fraction, due to thermal pretreatment, reached 335 mg/L. While in tests without zeolite, complete removal proved challenging, in zeolite-amended runs, complete removal was achieved, showcasing the materials' heavy metal absorption capacity. SCFA concentrations reached 20260 mgCOD/L, with acidification efficiency varying; runs I and III had ratios around 0.70 COD/COD, while run II showed substantial improvement (0.92) with chabazite. Anaerobic fermentation-digestion mass balance indicated a 41% reduction in landfill sludge mass, reducing its environmental footprint while yielding valuable byproducts like biogas and SCFAs. These findings underscore zeolites' potential in heavy metal absorption and acidification process enhancement, paving the way for applications with tannery sludge.

An evaluation of conventional and nature-based technologies for controlling antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic-resistant genes in wastewater treatment plants

Antibiotic resistance is a globally recognized health concern which leads to longer hospital stays, increased morbidity, increased mortality, and higher medical costs. Understanding how antibiotic resistance persists and exchanges in environmental systems like soil, water, and wastewater are critically important for understanding the emergence of pathogens with new resistance profiles and the subsequent exposure of people who indirectly/directly come in contact with these pathogens. There are concerns about the widespread application of prophylactic antibiotics in the clinical and agriculture sectors, as well as chemicals/detergents used in food and manufacturing industries, especially the quaternary ammonium compounds which have been found responsible for the generation of resistant genes in water and soil. The rates of horizontal gene transfer increase where there is a lack of proper water/wastewater infrastructure, high antibiotic manufacturing industries, or endpoint users - such as hospitals and intensive agriculture. Conventional wastewater treatment technologies are often inefficient in the reduction of ARB/ARGs and provide the perfect combination of conditions for the development of antibiotic resistance. The wastewater discharged from municipal facilities may therefore be enriched with bacterial communities/pathogens and provide a suitable environment (due to the presence of nutrients and other pollutants) to enhance the transfer of antibiotic resistance. However, facilities with tertiary treatment (either traditional/emerging technologies) provide higher rates of reduction. This review provides a synthesis of the current understanding of wastewater treatment and antibiotic resistance, examining the drivers that may accelerate their possible transmission to a different environment, and highlighting the need for tertiary technologies used in treatment plants for the reduction of resistant bacteria/genes.

Promoting Catalytic Performance Involving Hydrogen Spillover by Ion Exchange of Pt@A Catalysts to Regulate Reactant Adsorption

Zeolite-encapsulated metal nanoparticle systems have exhibited interesting catalytic performances via the hydrogen spillover process, yet how to further utilize the function of zeolite supports to promote catalytic properties in such a process is still challenging and has rarely been investigated. Herein, to address this issue, the strategy to strengthen the adsorption energy of reactant onto the zeolite surface via a simple ion exchange method has been implemented. Ion-exchanged linde type A (LTA) zeolite-encapsulated platinum nanoclusters (Pt@NaA, Pt@HA, Pt@KA, and Pt@CaA) were prepared to study the influence of ion exchange on the catalytic performance in the model reaction of hydrogenation of acetophenone to 1-phenylethanol. The reaction results showed that the Pt@CaA catalyst exhibited the best catalytic activity in the series of encapsulated catalysts, and the selectivity of 1-phenylethanol approached 100%. As revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and acetophenone temperature-programmed desorption (acetophenone-TPD) experiments, in comparison with introduced cations of Na+, H+, and K+, ion-exchanged Ca2+ on the zeolite maximumly enhanced the adsorption of carbonyl groups in acetophenone, playing a critical role in achieving the highest activity and excellent catalytic selectivity among the Pt@A catalysts.

Recent Development of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Water Purification

Water contamination is an increasing concern to mankind because of the increasing amount of pollutants in aquatic ecosystems. To purify the polluted water, various techniques have been used to remove hazardous components. Unfortunately, traditional cleanup techniques with a low uptake capacity are unable to achieve water purification. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently shown potential in effective water pollutant isolation in terms of selectivity and adsorption capacity over traditional porous materials. The high surface area and versatile functionality of MOFs allow for the development of new adsorbents. The development of MOFs in a range of water treatments in the recent five years will be highlighted in this review, along with assessments of the adsorption performance relevant to the particular task. Moreover, the outlook on future opportunities for water purification using MOFs is also provided.

Click nanosponge - A novel amine-rich β-cyclodextrin-based crosslinked polymer for heterogeneous catalysis

Cyclodextrin-based nanosponges are promising materials for heterogeneous catalysis due to their inherent synthetic versatility, tunable porosity and nontoxicity. In this work, a primary amine-rich β-cyclodextrin nanosponge was synthesized via click imine condensation reaction between 1,6-hexamethylamine-functionalized β-cyclodextrin (CDAM) and glutaraldehyde (GLT) to afford CDGLAM, in mild conditions. The crosslinked polymer exhibited a BET surface area of 36.39 m2 g-1, an average pore diameter of 3.09 nm (as assessed by the BJH method), and thermal stability up to 253 °C. CDGLAM was tested as heterogeneous catalyst for the metal-free Henry and Knoevenagel reactions, between aromatic aldehydes and nitromethane or ethyl cyanoacetate, respectively, affording the products in moderate to very high yields. These results show the ease of preparation of β-CD-based nanosponges from a green chemistry perspective, as well as their potential for future use in catalytic systems.

Self-acclimation mechanism of pyrite to sulfamethoxazole concentration in terms of degradation behavior and toxicity effects caused by reactive oxygen species

Pyrite has been extensively tested for oxidizing contaminants via the activation of water molecule or dissolved oxygen, while the changing of oxidation species induced by contaminant's concentration has been largely underestimated. In this study, we revealed a self-acclimation mechanism of pyrite in terms of •OH conversion to 1O2 during the sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation process under oxic conditions. Two reaction stages of SMX degradation by pyrite were observed. The SMX concentration decreased by 70% rapidly in the first 12 h after the reaction was initiated, then, the removal rate began to decrease as the SMX concentration decreased. Importantly, •OH and O2•- were the dominant oxidizing species in stage one, while 1O2 was responsible for the further degradation of SMX in stage two. The self-acclimated mechanism of pyrite was proven to be caused by the conversion of oxidative species at the surface of pyrite. This process can overcome the shortages of •OH such as ultrashort lifetime and limited effective diffusion in the decontamination of micropollutant. Moreover, different reactive oxygen species will lead to different degradation pathways and environmental toxicity while degrading pollutants. This finding of oxidizing species' self-acclimation mechanism should be of concern when using pyrite for water treatment.

Using NH2-MIL-125(Ti) for efficient removal of Cr(VI) and RhB from aqueous solutions: Competitive and cooperative behavior in the binary system

The coexistence of inorganic and organic contaminants is a challenge for real-life water treatment applications. Therefore, in this research, we used NH2-MIL-125(Ti) to evaluate the single adsorption of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) or Rhodamine B (RhB) in an aqueous solution and further investigate simultaneous adsorption experiments to compare the adsorption behavior changes. The main influencing factors, for example, reaction time, initial concentration, reaction temperature, and pH were studied in detail. In all reaction systems, the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models were well illuminated the adsorption progress of Cr(VI) and RhB. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. As compared to the single system, the adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) in the binary system gradually decreased as the additive amount of RhB increased, whereas the adsorption capacity of RhB in the binary system was expanded brilliantly. When the binary reaction system contained 100 mg/L Cr(VI), the removal rate of RhB increased to 97.58%. The formation of Cr(VI)-RhB and Cr(III)-RhB complexes was the cause that provided facilitation for the adsorption of RhB. These findings prove that the interactions during the water treatment process between contaminants may obtain additional benefits, contributing to a better adsorption capacity of co-existing contaminant.

Adsorptive removal of micropollutants by natural and faujasite zeolites: Structural effect of micropollutants on adsorption

To effectively characterize natural zeolite powder (ZP) and faujasite zeolite (FAU) as adsorbents to remove a wide variety of organic micropollutants, quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models for the adsorption of zeolites were developed. For this purpose, batch isotherms were performed to measure the adsorption affinity (Kd) between zeolite and organic micropollutants, and the measured Kd values were used as a dependent variable in the QSAR modeling. In the modeling, the concept of a linear free energy relationship (LFER) was employed and used either empirically measured or in silico calculated descriptors. Modeling results based on empirical descriptors showed that log Kd values for ZP could be predicted with R2 = 0.949 and standard error (SE) = 0.137 log units, and for FAU, R2 = 0.895 and SE = 0.144 log units. A test set was used to validate the models developed by the training set. The predictabilities of the models for the test set were R2 = 0.907 and SE = 0.209 log units for ZP and R2 = 0.784 and SE = 0.236 log units for FAU, indicating that the models have reasonable robustness and predictability. Also, we showed that in silico-based descriptors could be applied to the prediction. These findings may help determine the general coverage of ZP and FAU zeolites and identify suitable applications.

The potential of zeolite nanocomposites in removing microplastics, ammonia, and trace metals from wastewater and their role in phytoremediation

Nanocomposites are emerging as a new generation of materials that can be used to combat water pollution. Zeolite-based nanocomposites consisting of combinations of metals, metal oxides, carbon materials, and polymers are particularly effective for separating and adsorbing multiple contaminants from water. This review presents the potential of zeolite-based nanocomposites for eliminating a range of toxic organic and inorganic substances, dyes, heavy metals, microplastics, and ammonia from water. The review emphasizes that nanocomposites offer enhanced mechanical, catalytic, adsorptive, and porosity properties necessary for sustainable water purification techniques compared to individual composite materials. The adsorption potential of several zeolite-metal/metal oxide/polymer-based composites for heavy metals, anionic/cationic dyes, microplastics, ammonia, and other organic contaminants ranges between approximately 81 and over 99%. However, zeolite substrates or zeolite-amended soil have limited benefits for hyperaccumulators, which have been utilized for phytoremediation. Further research is needed to evaluate the potential of zeolite-based composites for phytoremediation. Additionally, the development of nanocomposites with enhanced adsorption capacity would be necessary for more effective removal of pollutants.

A review on artificial water channels incorporated polyamide membranes for water purification: Transport mechanisms and performance

While thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide (PA) membranes are advanced for removing salts and trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) from water, TFC PA membranes encounter a water permeance-selectivity trade-off due to PA layer structural characteristics. Drawing inspiration from the excellent water permeance and solute rejection of natural biological channels, the development of analogous artificial water channels (AWCs) in TFC PA membranes (abbreviated as AWCM) promises to achieve superior mass transfer efficiency, enabling breaking the upper bound of water permeance and selectivity. Herein, we first discussed the types and structural characteristics of AWCs, followed by summarizing the methods for constructing AWCM. We discussed whether the AWCs acted as the primary mass transfer channels in AWCM and emphasized the important role of the AWCs in water transport and ion/TrOCs rejection. We thoroughly summarized the molecular-level mechanisms and structure-performance relationship of water molecules, ions, and TrOCs transport in the confined nanospace of AWCs, which laid the foundation for illustrating the enhanced water permeance and salt/TrOCs selectivity of AWCM. Finally, we discussed the challenges encountered in the field of AWCM and proposed future perspectives for practical applications. This review is expected to offer guidance for understanding the transport mechanisms of AWCM and developing next-generation membrane for effective water treatment.

Fe-zeolites for the adsorption and oxidative degradation of nitroaromatic compounds in water

Nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) are prominent explosives. In this context, these toxic substances were released into the environment and cause long-lasting groundwater contamination. In preparation of a possible in-situ remediation, colloidal Fe-zeolites were investigated for their capabilities as adsorbents and oxidation catalysts. It was shown that the Fe-zeolites FeBEA35 and FeFAU55 are potent inorganic adsorbents for NACs and simultaneously capable of activating H2O2 as Fenton-like oxidation catalysts. Adsorption isotherms of 15 NACs on both zeolites were measured to evaluate the option of coupling adsorptive contaminant enrichment with oxidative degradation. The faujasite-type zeolite FeFAU55 showed a distinct S-type adsorption behaviour and reached significantly higher NAC loadings of > 20 wt%. For FeBEA35, L-type adsorption isotherms and maximum loadings qmax of about 4 wt% were obtained. Degradation of all NACs, monitored by nitrate formation, was observed. Apparent rate constants of the NACs with hydroxyl radicals in a homogeneous, stoichiometric Fenton reaction were related to the heterogeneous system to examine the role of adsorption on the oxidative degradation. Beneficial influence of the adsorption on the oxidation rates was identified. The results of this work open up promising prospects for future application of Fe-zeolites for the in-situ remediation of NAC-contaminated groundwater.

Efficient removal of Cu2+ and methylene blue pollutants from an aqueous solution by applying a new hybrid adsorbent based on alginate-chitosan and HAP derived from Moroccan rock phosphate

Alginate-chitosan/hydroxyapatite (Alg-Cs/HAP) beads were prepared as adsorbent to remove methylene blue (MB) and copper ions from an aqueous solution using a batch system. FTIR, TGA, point of zero charge (pHpzc), SEM, XRD, and BET analysis were used to characterize the elaborated material. The effect of several parameters such as initial pH value, adsorbent dose, temperature, contact time, and initial pollutant concentration were also investigated. The obtained results showed that Alg-Cs/HAP exhibit excellent adsorption properties for Cu (II) and MB removal, with high adsorption capacities of copper ions (208.34 mg/g) and methylene blue (454.54 mg/g). The kinetic of the adsorption process is correlated with the pseudo-first-order for methylene blue and the pseudo-second-order for copper ions. The equilibrium data for MB dye fitted the Freundlich isotherm model, thus implying that the adsorption process consists of multilayer adsorption as well as interactions between the adsorbate and the adsorbent. The equilibrium data for copper ions corresponds closely with the Langmuir model which suggests that the adsorbed molecules occur over a monolayer. Various thermodynamic parameters such as the standard Gibbs energy (ΔG°), standard enthalpy (ΔH°), and standard entropy (ΔS°) were calculated. All results indicated that Alg-Cs/HAP material has a good potential for the treatment of wastewater.

Tunable assembly of host-guest colloidal crystals

Entropy compartmentalization provides new self-assembly routes to colloidal host-guest (HG) structures. Leveraging host particle shape to drive the assembly of HG structures has only recently been proposed and demonstrated. However, the extent to which the guest particles can dictate the structure of the porous network of host particles has not been explored. In this work, by modifying only the guest shape, we show athermal, binary mixtures of star-shaped host particles and convex polygon-shaped guest particles assemble as many as five distinct crystal structures, including rotator and discrete rotator guest crystals, two homoporous host crystals, and one heteroporous host crystal. Edge-to-edge alignment of neighboring stars results in the formation of three distinct pore motifs, whose preferential formation is controlled by the size and shape of the guest particles. Finally, we confirm, via free volume calculations, that assembly is driven by entropy compartmentalization, where the hosts and guests contribute differently to the free energy of the system; free volume calculations also explain differences in assembly based on guest shape. These results provide guest design rules for assembling colloidal HG structures, especially on surfaces and interfaces.

Volatile Organic Compounds Adsorption Capacities of Zeolite/Activated Carbon Composites Formed by Electrostatic Self-Assembly

Activated carbon (AC) is a broad-spectrum adsorbent but is flammable and has low adsorption capacities for polar and/or high-boiling volatile organic compounds (VOCs), while zeolites exhibit high thermal stability but poor adsorption of macromolecular and nonpolar VOCs. In this study, zeolite/AC composites were synthesized with the aim of obtaining broad-spectrum, efficient, and safe adsorbents for VOCs. Dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (DDA)-modified AC was used as a carrier for an in situ hydrothermal reaction enabling assembly with zeolites due to electrostatic attraction. Interface models were constructed for their phases, which revealed the binding force and simulated the binding process. The adsorption and flame resistance of the composites were evaluated. The results showed that DDA effectively modified AC to give it a long-lasting positive charge in solutions. High-silicon and pure-silicon zeolites exhibited low negative charges or were even neutral; it was difficult to combine with the modified AC via electrostatic attractions. Instead, LTA zeolites with high aluminum contents and negative charges were used, and the seed-induction method was used. Ethanol and ultrasonic dispersion were used to prevent agglomeration of the seeds and modified AC powder, so they were self-assembled electrostatically. Moreover, the crystallization time was extended and composites with high zeolite loadings were successfully prepared. According to the model calculation, the binding energy between the zeolite and AC before and after the DDA modification were 324.97 and 1076.46 kcal mol-1, respectively, and the distance between them was shortened by 2.7 Å after DDA treatment. As a result, AC and zeolite combined more closely and exhibited a stronger binding energy. The adsorption capacity for highly polar dichloromethane was improved by zeolite loading on the AC, and the bed penetration time was doubled. However, impregnation with inorganic sodium enhanced the reactivities of the organic components in the composite, and the ignition point was slightly reduced. Furthermore, the electrostatic self-assembly method can expand to prepare the LTA zeolite/columnar AC composite from shaped AC, greatly improving its application prospects.

Synergistic removal of pharmaceuticals and antibiotic resistance from ultrafiltered WWTP effluent: Free-floating ARGs exceptionally susceptible to degradation

To protect the environment and human health, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and persistent pharmaceuticals need to be removed from WWTP effluent prior to its reuse. However, an efficient process for removing free-floating extracellular DNA (exDNA) in combination with a wide range of pharmaceuticals is yet to be reported for real process conditions. As a possible solution, we treated real ultrafiltered WWTP effluent with UV/H₂O₂ and combined GAC and zeolite sorption. In terms of exDNA, sequencing and high-throughput quantitative PCR (HT-qPCR) showed that exDNA is a potent carrier of numerous ARGs in ultrafiltered WWTP effluent (123 ARGs), including multi-drug efflux pump mexF that became the dominant exARG in GAC effluent over time. Due to the exposure to degradation agents, exDNA was reduced more efficiently than intracellular DNA, and overall levels of ARGs were substantially lowered. Moreover, GAC sorption was particularly effective in the removal of almost all the 85 detected pharmaceutical residues, with fresh GAC demonstrating an efficiency of up to 100%. However, zeolite (Si/Al 0.8) addition was needed to enhance the removal of persistent pollutants such as gabapentin and diclofenac to 57% and up to 100%, respectively. Our combined approach eminently decreases the hazardous effects of pharmaceuticals and antibiotic resistance in the ultrafiltered WWTP effluent, producing effluent suitable for multiple reuse options according to the latest legislation. In addition, we provided similarly promising but less extensive data for surface water and treated greywater.

Polymeric hydrogels-based materials for wastewater treatment

Low-cost and reliable wastewater treatment is a relevant issue worldwide to reduce the concentration of environmental pollutants. Industrial effluents containing dyes, heavy metals, and other inorganic and organic compounds can pollute water resources; therefore, novel technologies are required to mitigate and control their release into the environment. Adsorption is one of the simplest methods for treating contaminated water in which a wide spectrum of adsorbents can be used to remove emerging compounds. Hydrogels are interesting materials with high adsorption capacities that can be synthesized via green routes. These adsorbents are promising for large-scale industrial wastewater treatment applications; however, gaps still exist in achieving sustainable commercial implementation. This review focuses on the discussion and analysis of preparation, characterization, and adsorption properties of hydrogels for water purification. The advantages of these polymeric materials for water treatment were analyzed, including their performance in the removal of different organic and inorganic contaminants. Recent advances in the functionalization of hydrogels and the synthesis of novel composites have also been described. The adsorption capacities of hydrogel-based adsorbents are higher than 500 mg/g for different organic and inorganic pollutants, and can reach values of up to >2000 mg/g for organic compounds, significantly outperforming other materials reported for water cleaning. The main interactions involved in the adsorption of water pollutants using hydrogel-based adsorbents were described and explained to allow the interpretation of their removal mechanisms. The current challenges in the implementation of hydrogels for water purification in real-life operations are also highlighted. This review provides an updated picture of hydrogels as interesting materials to address water depollution worldwide.

Fly Ash-Based Na-X Zeolite Application in Separation Process of Bovine Serum Albumin from Aqueous Solution in the Presence of Organic Substances with Anionic Character

The main purpose of the investigations was to explore the protein adsorption on porous materials, as well as to identify the mechanisms of protein attachment without and with other common environmental contaminants, such as drugs, polymers or surfactants. This study applied the Na-X zeolite for the adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) from solutions with various pH values. Electrophoretic mobility measurements and potentiometric titrations were conducted in systems containing both protein and/or PAA (poly(acrylic acid) polymer/DCF (diclofenac) drug/SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) surfactant to investigate the protein binding mechanisms in the complex adsorbate systems. In addition, aggregate size and stability measurements were performed in the investigated systems. Based on the research results, it was possible to conclude that the protein adsorbed most preferably on the zeolite surface at a pH value close to its isoelectric point (pI) (102.15 mg/g), and protein adsorption was the lowest in the solutions with strongly alkaline (29.61 mg/g) or acidic (77.45 mg/g) pH values. Thus, the examined zeolitic material can be considered an effective adsorbent for protein removal from an aqueous solution.

Effect of SiO2/Al2O3 ratio on the electrochemical performance of amorphous zeolite loaded with cobalt oxide grown via steam-assisted crystallization method

Improving the performance of a supercapacitor is one of the main approaches to solve the energy shortage problem. Electrode material is one of the key components limiting the efficiency of a supercapacitor. Discovering, tuning, and improving electrode materials are very important. This work reports the effect of SiO₂/Al₂O₃ ratio on electrochemical performances of amorphous zeolites ZSM5 (AZ) and H-ZSM5 (H-AZ) loaded with cobalt oxide. Two SiO₂/Al₂O₃ ratios (1 = 6.2 and 2 = 8.3) of AZ₁, AZ₂ and H-AZ₁, H-AZ₂ were synthesized by a facile impregnation method. Then, controlled masses of cobalt oxide were introduced to enhance the supercapacitive performances of the amorphous zeolite. Investigation of the SiO₂/Al₂O₃ ratio in the cobalt oxide/zeolite composite (Co/AZ and Co/H-AZ) was carried out to unveil its effect on the electrochemical properties. Worthy of note is the fact that the resulting electrode materials exhibited supercapacitive behavior that is effective over a potential window ranging from 0 to 0.5 V in potassium hydroxide (1 M KOH) aqueous electrolyte. Results from Galvanometry Charging and Discharging (GCD) analyses show that the modified Ni-foam electrodes loaded with Co/H-AZ₁ and Co/H-AZ₂ are capable of delivering a relatively high specific capacity from 45.97 mA h g^-1 to a high value of 72.5 mA h g^-1 at 1 A g^-1 and Ni-foam electrodes loaded with Co/AZ₁ and Co/AZ₂ exhibited values from 26 mA h g^-1 to 52.83 mA h g^-1 respectively. It is clearly shown that, when the mass ratio SiO₂/Al₂O₃ increases, the specific capacity increases as well. It was also noticed that after 2000 cycles, Co/H-AZ₁ and Co/AZ₁ have a poor coulombic efficiency while Co/H-AZ₂ and Co/AZ₂ exhibited 98% for coulombic efficiency. Finally, this study shows that to fabricate high performance supercapacitors with amorphous zeolite loaded with cobalt oxide, one should keep the ratio of SiO₂/Al₂O₃ as high as possible during synthesis.

Functional materials contributing to the removal of chlorinated hydrocarbons from soil and groundwater: Classification and intrinsic chemical-biological removal mechanisms

Chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHs) are the main contaminants in soil and groundwater and have posed great challenge on the remediation of soil and ground water. Different remediation materials have been developed to deal with the environmental problems caused by CHs. Remediation materials can be classified into three main categories according to the corresponding technologies: adsorption materials, chemical reduction materials and bioaugmentation materials. In this paper, the classification and preparation of the three materials are briefly described in terms of synthesis and properties according to the different types. Then, a detailed review of the remediation mechanisms and applications of the different materials in soil and groundwater remediation is presented in relation to the various properties of the materials and the different challenges encountered in laboratory research or in the environmental application. The removal trends in different environments were found to be largely similar, which means that composite materials tend to be more effective in removing CHs in actual remediation. For instance, adsorbents were found to be effective when combined with other materials, due to the ability to take advantage of the respective strengths of both materials. The rapid removal of CHs while minimizing the impact of CHs on another material and the material itself on the environment. Finally, suggestions for the next research directions are given in conjunction with this paper.

Rational Fabrication of Ionic Covalent Organic Frameworks for Chemical Analysis Applications

The rapid development of advanced material science boosts novel chemical analytical technologies for effective pretreatment and sensitive sensing applications in the fields of environmental monitoring, food security, biomedicines, and human health. Ionic covalent organic frameworks (iCOFs) emerge as a class of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with electrically charged frames or pores as well as predesigned molecular and topological structures, large specific surface area, high crystallinity, and good stability. Benefiting from the pore size interception effect, electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, and recognizing group load, iCOFs exhibit the promising ability to extract specific analytes and enrich trace substances from samples for accurate analysis. On the other hand, the stimuli response of iCOFs and their composites to electrochemical, electric, or photo-irradiating sources endows them as potential transducers for biosensing, environmental analysis, surroundings monitoring, etc. In this review, we summarized the typical construction of iCOFs and focused on their rational structure design for analytical extraction/enrichment and sensing applications in recent years. The important role of iCOFs in the chemical analysis was fully highlighted. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of iCOF-based analytical technologies were also discussed, which may be beneficial to provide a solid foundation for further design and application of iCOFs.

Advanced Hybrid System for Ammonium Valorization as Liquid Fertilizer from Treated Urban Wastewaters: Validation of Natural Zeolites Pretreatment and Liquid-Liquid Membrane Contactors at Pilot Plant Scale

This study evaluates a hybrid system combining zeolites as a sorption stage and a hollow fiber membrane contactor (HFMC) for ammonia (NH₃) recovery from treated urban wastewater. Ion exchange with zeolites was selected as an advanced pretreatment and concentration step before the HFMC. The system was tested with wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent (mainstream, 50 mg N-NH₄/L) and anaerobic digestion centrates (sidestream, 600-800 mg N-NH₄/L) from another WWTP. Natural zeolite, primarily clinoptilolite, demonstrated effective desorption of retained ammonium using a 2% NaOH solution in a closed-loop configuration, resulting in an ammonia-rich brine that enabled over 95% NH₃ recovery using polypropylene HFMCs. A 1 m³/h demonstration plant processed both urban wastewaters, which were pretreated by ultrafiltration, removing over 90% of suspended solids and 60-65% of COD. The 2% NaOH regeneration brines (2.4-5.6 g N-NH₄/L) were treated in a closed-loop HFMC pilot system, producing 10-15% N streams with potential use as liquid fertilizers. The resulting ammonium nitrate was free of heavy metals and organic micropollutants, making it suitable for use as liquid fertilizer. This comprehensive N management solution for urban wastewater applications can contribute to local economies while achieving reduced N discharge and circularity goals.

A Review on the Adsorption Isotherms and Design Calculations for the Optimization of Adsorbent Mass and Contact Time

Adsorption is a widely used chemical engineering unit operation for the separation and purification of fluid streams. Typical uses of adsorption include the removal of targeted pollutants like antibiotics, dyes, heavy metals, and other small to large molecules from aqueous solutions or wastewater. To date several adsorbents that vary in terms of their physicochemical properties and costs have been tested for their efficacy to remove these pollutants from wastewater. Irrespective of the type of adsorbent, nature of the pollutant, or experimental conditions, the overall cost of adsorption depends directly on the adsorption contact time and the cost of the adsorbent materials. Thus, it is essential to minimize the amount of adsorbent and the contact time required. We carefully reviewed the attempts made by several researchers to minimize these two parameters using theoretical adsorption kinetics and isotherms. We also clearly explained the theoretical methods and the calculation procedures involved during the optimization of the adsorbent mass and the contact time. To complement the theoretical calculation procedures, we also made a detailed review on the theoretical adsorption isotherms that are commonly used to model experimental equilibrium data that can be used to optimize the adsorbent mass.

Pyrolyzed magnetic NiO/carbon-derived nanocomposite from a hierarchical nickel-based metal-organic framework with ultrahigh adsorption capacity

Herein, a simple one-pot solvothermal approach is used to create magnetic porous carbon nanocomposites which obtained from a nickel-based metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF) and examined for their ability to uptake methyl orange (MO) dye. Derived carbons with exceptional porosity and magnetic properties were created during the different pyrolysis temperatures of Ni-MOF (700, 800, and 900 °C) under a nitrogen atmosphere. The black powders were given the names CDM-700, CDM-800, and CDM-900 after they were obtained. A variety of analysis methods, including FESEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, VSM, and N₂ adsorption-desorption were used to characterize as-prepared powders. Furthermore, adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH variation, and initial dye concentration effects was investigated. The maximum adsorption capacities were 307.38, 5976.35, 4992.39, and 2636.54 mg/g for Ni-MOF, CDM-700, CDM-800, and CDM-900, respectively, which show the ultrahigh capacity of the resulted nanocomposites compared to newest materials. The results showed that not only the crystallinity turned but also the specific surface area was increased about four times after paralyzing. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of MO dye for CDM-700 was obtained at adsorbent dosage of 0.083 g/L, contact time of 60 min, feed pH of 3, and temperature of 45 °C. The Langmuir model has the best match and suggests the adsorption process as a single layer. According to the results of reaction kinetic studies using well-known models, the pseudo-second-order model (R² = 0.9989) displayed high agreement with the experimental data. The synthesized nanocomposite is introduced as a promising superadsorbent for eliminating dyes from contaminated water due to strong recycling performance up to the fifth cycle.

Sonophotocatalysis with Photoactive Nanomaterials for Wastewater Treatment and Bacteria Disinfection

Sonophotocatalysis is described as a combination of two individual processes of photocatalysis and sonocatalysis. It has proven to be highly promising in degrading dissolved contaminants in wastewaters as well as bacteria disinfection applications. It eliminates some of the main disadvantages observed in each individual technique such as high costs, sluggish activity, and prolonged reaction times. The review has accomplished a critical analysis of sonophotocatalytic reaction mechanisms and the effect of the nanostructured catalyst and process modification techniques on the sonophotocatalytic performance. The synergistic effect between the mentioned processes, reactor design, and the electrical energy consumption has been discussed due to their importance when implementing this novel technology in practical applications, such as real industrial or municipal wastewater treatment plants. The utilization of sonophotocatalysis in disinfection and inactivation of bacteria has also been reviewed. In addition, we further suggest improvements to promote this technology from the lab-scale to large-scale applications. We hope this up-to-date review will advance future research in this field and push this technology toward widespread adoption and commercialization.

Is sorption technology fit for the removal of persistent and mobile organic contaminants from water?

Persistent, Mobile, and Toxic (PMT) and very persistent and very mobile (vPvM) substances are a growing threat to water security and safety. Many of these substances are distinctively different from other more traditional contaminants in terms of their charge, polarity, and aromaticity. This results in distinctively different sorption affinities towards traditional sorbents such as activated carbon. Additionally, an increasing awareness on the environmental impact and carbon footprint of sorption technologies puts some of the more energy-intensive practices in water treatment into question. Commonly used approaches may thus need to be readjusted to become fit for purpose to remove some of the more challenging PMT and vPvM substances, including for example short chained per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). We here critically review the interactions that drive sorption of organic compounds to activated carbon and related sorbent materials and identify opportunities and limitations of tailoring activated carbon for PMT and vPvM removal. Other less traditional sorbent materials, including ion exchange resins, modified cyclodextrins, zeolites and metal-organic frameworks are then discussed for potential alternative or complementary use in water treatment scenarios. Sorbent regeneration approaches are evaluated in terms of their potential, considering reusability, potential for on-site regeneration, and potential for local production. In this context, we also discuss the benefits of coupling sorption to destructive technologies or to other separation technologies. Finally, we sketch out possible future trends in the evolution of sorption technologies for PMT and vPvM removal from water.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) membrane with immobilized TiO2 for degradation of steroid hormone micropollutants in a photocatalytic membrane reactor

The lack of effective technologies to remove steroid hormones (SHs) from aquatic systems is a critical issue for both environment and public health. The performance of a flow-through photocatalytic membrane reactor (PMR) with TiO₂ immobilized on a photostable poly(vinylidene fluoride) membrane (PVDF-TiO₂) was evaluated in the context of SHs degradation at concentrations from 0.05 to 1000 µg/L under UV exposure (365 nm). A comprehensive investigation into the membrane preparation approach, including varying the surface Ti content and distribution, and membrane pore size, was conducted to gain insights on the rate-limiting steps for the SHs degradation. Increasing surface Ti content from 4 % to 6.5 % enhanced the 17β-estradiol (E2) degradation from 46 ± 12-81 ± 6 %. Apparent degradation kinetics were independent of both TiO₂ homogeneity and membrane pore size (0.1-0.45 µm). With optimized conditions, E2 removal was higher than 96 % at environmentally relevant feed concentration (100 ng/L), a flux of 60 L/m²h, 25 mW/cm², and 6.5 % Ti. These results indicated that the E2 degradation on the PVDF-TiO₂ membrane was limited by the catalyst content and light penetration depth. Further exploration of novel TiO₂ immobilization approach that can offer a larger catalyst content and light penetration is required to improve the micropollutant removal efficiency in PMR.

Adsorption of cationic and anionic dyes onto coffee grounds cellulose/sodium alginate double-network hydrogel beads: Isotherm analysis and recyclability performance

This work describes the preparation of new eco-friendly adsorbents with a simple method. Gel beads of coffee grounds cellulose (CGC) and sodium alginate (SA) were prepared for wastewater treatment. Upon their synthesis, the physicochemical properties, performances and efficiency were analyzed by means of various structural and morphological characterizations. Kinetic and thermodynamic adsorption approaches evaluated the removal capacity of these beads which reached equilibrium in 20 min for Methylene Blue (MB) and Congo Red (CR). Also, the kinetics shows that the results can be explained by the pseudo-second-order model (PSO). Furthermore, the isotherm assessments showed that Langmuir-Freundlich can fit the adsorption data of both contaminants. Accordingly, the maximum adsorption capacities reached by the Langmuir-Freundlich model are 400.50 and 411.45 mg/g for MB and CR, respectively. It is interesting to note that the bio-adsorption capabilities of MB and CR on bead hydrogels decreased with temperature. Besides, the results of the thermodynamic study evidenced that the bio-adsorption processes are favorable, spontaneous and exothermic. The CGC/SA gel beads are therefore outstanding bio-adsorbents, offering a great adsorptive performance and regenerative abilities.

Microplastics in different water samples (seawater, freshwater, and wastewater): Removal efficiency of membrane treatment processes

The distribution and fate of microplastics in different water sources and their treatment plants (seawater, three municipal wastewaters, a pharmaceutical factory wastewater, and three drinking waters) in France were studied. Currently, research in this field is still under exploration since almost no relevant standards or policies have been introduced for the detection, the removal, or the discharge of microplastics. This study used an improved quantitative and qualitative analytical methodology for microplastic detection by μ-FTIR carried out with siMPle analytical software. By investigation, wastewater was determined to contain the most abundant microplastics in quantity (4,203-42,000 MP·L^-1), then followed by surface water/groundwater (153-19,836 MP·L^-1) and seawater (around 420 MP·L^-1). Polyethylene was the dominant material in almost all water types followed by polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate. Almost all treatment technologies could remove microplastics whatever the feed water types and concentration of microplastics, though some treatment processes or transport pipes could cause additional contamination from microplastics. The four WWTPs, three DWTPs, and SWTP in France provided, respectively, 87.8-99.8%, 82.3-99.9%, 69.0-96.0% removal/retention of MPs in quantity, and provided 97.3-100%, 91.9-99.9%, 92.2-98.1% removal/retention of MPs in surface area. Moreover, ultrafiltration was confirmed to be an effective technology for microplastic retention and control of dimensions of microplastics in smaller ranges both in field-scale and lab-scale experiments. The 200 kDa ultrafiltration membrane could retain 70-100% and 80-100% of microplastics in quantity and in surface area, respectively.

Combination mechanism of the ternary composite based on Fe3O4-chitosan-graphene oxide prepared by solvothermal method

Magnetic nanohybrid combining chitosan and graphene have demonstrated promising application in environmental remediation. Herein, ternary composite MCG based on Fe₃O₄, chitosan (CS) and graphene oxide (GO) was facilely prepared via solvothermal method. The as prepared composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman, Brunauer/Emmett/Teller-Barret/Joyner/Halenda (BET-BJH) and thermo gravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA). The combination mechanism of MCG was unveiled via employing the hard-soft acid-base (HSAB) theory and spectroscopic investigations including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and fluorescent emission spectra. Particularly, combination mechanism of MCG was elucidated by the probable site to site interaction of the couplet components in MCG, as follows. (1) CS-Fe₃O₄. The primary interaction is N(NH₂)-Fe(III), electron donates from N to Fe, transforming one half of the amino groups of chitosan into positive N⁺. (2) GO-CS. Amidation reaction is the primary interaction form, converting the other half of the amino groups of chitosan into -C(O)NH-. (3) GO-Fe₃O₄. Dominant interactions are those of epoxy, hydroxyl and aromatic ring with Fe(III). Moreover, MCG exhibits fair adsorption performance on divalent heavy metals in six consecutive cycles. These explorations may shed light on the design of efficient adsorbent based on Fe₃O₄-chitosan-graphene architecture.

Porous Materials for Water Purification

Water pollution is a growing threat to humanity due to the pervasiveness of contaminants in water bodies. Significant efforts have been made to separate these hazardous components to purify polluted water through various methods. However, conventional remediation methods suffer from limitations such as low uptake capacity or selectivity, and current water quality standards cannot be met. Recently, advanced porous materials (APMs) have shown promise in improved segregation of contaminants compared to traditional porous materials in uptake capacity and selectivity. These materials feature merits of high surface area and versatile functionality, rendering them ideal platforms for the design of novel adsorbents. This Review summarizes the development and employment of APMs in a variety of water treatments accompanied by assessments of task-specific adsorption performance. Finally, we discuss our perspectives on future opportunities for APMs in water purification.

Adsorption of heavy metal onto biomass-derived activated carbon: review

Due to the rapid development of the social economy and the massive increase in population, human beings continue to undertake processing, and commercial manufacturing activities of heavy metals, which has caused serious damage to the environment and human health. Heavy metals lead to serious environmental problems such as soil contamination and water pollution. Human health and the living environment are closely affected by the handling of heavy metals. Researchers must find several simple, economical and practical methods to adsorb heavy metals. Adsorption technology has been recognized as an efficient and economic strategy, exhibiting the advantages of recovering and reusing adsorbents. Biomass-derived activated carbon adsorbents offer large adjustable specific surface area, hierarchically porous structure, strong adsorption capacity, and excellent high economic applicability. This paper focuses on reviewing the preparation methods of biomass-derived activated carbon in the past five years. The application of representative biomass-derived activated carbon in the adsorption of heavy metals preferentially was described to optimize the critical parameters of the activation type of samples and process conditions. The key factors of the adsorbent, the physicochemical properties of the heavy metals, and the adsorption conditions affecting the adsorption of heavy metals are highlighted. In addition, the challenges faced by biomass-derived activated carbon are also discussed.

Adsorption of Carbamazepine in All-Silica Zeolites Studied with Density Functional Theory Calculations

The anticonvulsant drug carbamazepine (-) is an emerging contaminant of considerable concern due to its hazard potential and environmental persistence. Previous experimental studies proposed hydrophobic zeolites as promising adsorbents for the removal of carbamazepine from water, but only a few framework types were considered in those investigations. In the present work, electronic structure calculations based on dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT) were used to study the adsorption of CBZ in eleven all-silica zeolites having different pore sizes and connectivities of the pore system (AFI, ATS, BEA, CFI, DON, FAU, IFR, ISV, MOR, SFH, SSF framework types). It was found that some zeolites with one-dimensional channels formed by twelve-membered rings (IFR, AFI) exhibit the highest affinity towards CBZ. A "good fit" of CBZ into the zeolite pores that maximizes dispersion interactions was identified as the dominant factor determining the interaction strength. Further calculations addressed the role of temperature (for selected systems) and of guest-guest interactions between coadsorbed CBZ molecules. In addition to predicting zeolite frameworks of particular interest as materials for selective CBZ removal, the calculations presented here also contribute to the atomic-level understanding of the interaction of functional organic molecules with all-silica zeolites.

Biochar-mediated removal of pharmaceutical compounds from aqueous matrices via adsorption

Pharmaceutical is one of the noteworthy classes of emerging contaminants. These biologically active compounds pose a range of deleterious impacts on human health and the environment. This is attributed to their refractory behavior, poor biodegradability, and pseudopersistent nature. Their large-scale production by pharmaceutical industries and subsequent widespread utilization in hospitals, community health centers, and veterinary facilities, among others, have significantly increased the occurrence of pharmaceutical residues in various environmental compartments. Several technologies are currently being evaluated to eliminate pharmaceutical compounds (PCs) from aqueous environments. Among them, adsorption appears as the most viable treatment option because of its operational simplicity and low cost. Intensive research and development efforts are, therefore, currently underway to develop inexpensive adsorbents for the effective abatement of PCs. Although numerous adsorbents have been investigated for the removal of PCs in recent years, biochar-based adsorbents have garnered tremendous scientific attention to eliminate PCs from aqueous matrices because of their decent specific surface area, tunable surface chemistry, scalable production, and environmentally benign nature. This review, therefore, attempts to provide an overview of the latest progress in the application of biochar for the removal of PCs from wastewater. Additionally, the fundamental knowledge gaps in the domain knowledge are identified and novel strategic research guidelines are laid out to make further advances in this promising approach towards sustainable development.

XPS, structural and antimicrobial studies of novel functionalized halloysite nanotubes

A novel robust preparation method based on thermal salt decomposition has been elaborated for synthesis of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) impregnated with silver and iron oxide nanoparticles. The developed method is simple, time-effective, and can be employed for large scale material fabrication. Different characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning and transmission electron spectroscopy (SEM and TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) have been used to characterize the functionalized HNTs composite materials. Surface elemental and chemical state analysis was conducted using X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The functionalized HNTs exhibit enhanced total surface area (by 17.5%) and pore volume (by 11%) compare to the raw HNTs calculated by using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. It was shown that functionalized HNTs possess high antimicrobial properties towards both gram- positive and gram-negative bacteria species. The enhanced surface area and bactericidal properties of functionalized HNTs could be beneficial for employing of the prepared material as low cost filtration media for water treatment applications. Molecular dynamics (FPMD) were performed to obtain insights about possible physiochemical mechanisms for chemical adsorption and on the HNT thermal stability.

Influencing Factors and Kinetics of Modified Shell Powder/La-Fe-TiO2 Photocatalytic Degradation of Pyridine Wastewater

Modified Shell Powder/La-Fe-TiO₂ (La-Fe-TiO₂@MSP) composites were fabricated using the sol-gel method and characterized by SEM, XRD, UV-vis DRS and photocurrent techniques, and their physicochemical and optical properties were analyzed. The effects of various factors on the photocatalytic degradation of pyridine and its reaction kinetics were investigated by batch experiments using pyridine, a typical nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound in coal chemical wastewater, as the target removal species. The pyridine degradation rate of 80.23% was obtained for 800 mg/L composite solution by photocatalytic oxidation of 50 mg/L pyridine wastewater for 180 min at 35 °C, pH = 8 and light intensity of 560 W. The photocatalytic degradation performance was optimal. The quenching experiments determined that the active species of photodegradation were mainly hole and hydroxyl radicals, and the photocatalytic degradation mechanism was analyzed in this way.

Pore creation nanoarchitectonics from non-porous metal-organic framework to porous carbon for adsorptive elimination of sulfanilamide and chloroxylenol from aqueous solution

Three isomeric metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) such as MAF-5, - 6, and - 32 (with the same composition of [Zn(2-ethylimidazole)₂]) were carbonized and, for the first time, activated further with KOH to prepare highly porous MOF-derived carbons (MDCs). Importantly, MDC-32 derived from non-porous MAF-32 had the highest porosity among the three MDCs although it has the lowest porosity when no KOH activation was done. Adsorption of sulfanilamide and chloroxylenol from water was investigated with the MDCs. Among the MDCs, MDC-32 showed the best adsorptive performance for sulfanilamide and chloroxylenol. Moreover, MDC-32, had the highest adsorption capacity (256 mg/g) for removing sulfanilamide from water, compared with any adsorbent reported so far. Based on the observed adsorption and properties of the adsorbate and adsorbent, π-π and hydrogen bonding interactions, with a slight contribution of repulsive electrostatic interaction, could be suggested as the mechanism for the sulfanilamide adsorption over the MDC-32. Moreover, the MDC-32 could be recycled easily for up to four cycles. It could be suggested that non-porous MOFs can be a good precursor for highly porous MDCs, if activated well using KOH, for example. Finally, MAF-32-derived carbon, MDC-32, might be suggested as a plausible adsorbent to eliminate organics such as sulfanilamide from water.
