Personality and outcome in depression: an 18-month prospective follow-up study

Personality traits and change in depression status at 18 months: Findings from a British Psychiatric Morbidity Survey

BACKGROUND

Depression is a common mental disorder, yet it shows low remission rates. The available evidence on personality traits as factors associated with the course of depression has common methodological limitations. Identifying personality traits linked with depression can improve understanding of the course of illness. Therefore, we aimed to investigate personality traits that are associated with the course of depression over 18 months.

METHODS

longitudinal data of 2366 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey respondents were analysed. Assessments were applied at two-time points (baseline) and follow-up (about 18 months later). We assessed the total score on the screening questionnaire from the Structured Clinical Interview (SCID-II) for the dependent, obsessive-compulsive, and borderline personalities. Depression was measured using the revised Clinical Interview Schedule (CIS-R) version.

RESULTS

An increase of one score on the borderline personality scale at baseline increased the odds of experiencing persistent depression by 1.50 times (OR = 1.50, 95 % CI [1.22-1.86]), depression onset by 1.30 times (OR = 1.30, 95 % CI [1.14-1.50]), and recovery by 1.52 times (OR = 1.52, 95 % CI [1.35-1.70]), comparing to no depression group. Elevated scores of dependent personality traits significantly predicted depression persistence (OR = 1.95, 95 % CI [1.52-2.49]). An increase of one score on the obsessive-compulsive personality scale increases the odds of depression onset by 1.21 times (OR = 1.21, 95 % CI [1.04-1.39]).

LIMITATIONS

The APMS survey defined depression statuses in a limited sense, which may affect the generalisability of these results.

CONCLUSION

The present study confirms previous findings and contributes evidence suggesting that personality dysfunctions worsen depression outcomes.

Personality traits as risk factors for relapse or recurrence in major depression: a systematic review

Background

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is highly recurrent. Identifying risk factors for relapse in depression is essential to improve prevention plans and therapeutic outcomes. Personality traits and personality disorders are widely considered to impact outcomes in MDD. We aimed to evaluate the role of personality aspects in the risk of relapse and recurrence in MDD.

Method

A PROSPERO-registered systematic review was conducted using Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science and CINAHL as data sources, together with hand searching of four journals over the five years till 2022. There was independent abstract selection, quality assessment and data extraction from each study.

Results

Twenty two studies me t eligibility criteria involving 12,393 participants. Neurotic personality features are significantly associated with the risk of relapse and recurrence of depression, though the data is not uniform. There is some, though limited, evidence that borderline, obsessive-compulsive and dependent personality traits or disorders increase the risk for relapse in depression.

Limitations

The small number, in addition to the methodological heterogeneity of the included studies, did not allow further analysis, such as meta-analysis.

Conclusion

People with high neuroticism and dependent personality traits, borderline personality disorder or obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, compared to those without, may be at a higher risk of experiencing relapse or recurrence of MDD. Specific and targeted interventions may potentially reduce relapse and recurrence rates in these groups and could improve outcomes.

Internalized-stigma and dissociative experiences in bipolar disorder

INTRODUCTION

Dissociative symptoms have been recently related to bipolar disorder (BD) symptomatology. Moreover, the disease burden carries on a share of perceived self-stigma that amplifies the BD impairment. Internalized stigma and dissociative symptoms often seem overlapping, leading toward common outcomes, with reduced treatment seeking and poor adherence. We hypothesize a potential relationship between dissociation and self-stigma in patients suffering from BD.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this cross-sectional study we enrolled a total of 120 adult clinically stable BD outpatients. All participants completed the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness (ISMI), Dissociative Experiences Scale-II (DES-II), and Manchester Short Assessment of Quality of Life (MANSA).

RESULTS

Average age and age at BD (BD-I n = 66, 55%; BD-II n = 54, 45%) onset were 46.14 (±4.23), and 27.45 (±10.35) years, with mean disease duration of 18.56 (±13.08) years. Most participants were female (n = 71; 59.2%) and 40 (33%) of them experienced lifetime abuse, with an average of 1.05 (±0.78) suicide attempts. DES scores (mean 31.8, ±21.6) correlated with ISMI total-score, with significant association with spikes in Alienation (13.1, SD±3.1) (p < 0.001) and Stereotype (13.8, SD±3.9) (p < 0.001). Linear regression analysis has shown a significant association between DES total score and alienation (p < 0.001), stereotype (p < 0.001) and MANSA total-score (p < 0.001).

DISCUSSION

For the first time, our data suggests that self-stigma is associated to dissociative symptoms, reducing overall quality of life in BD. The early identification of at-risk patients with previous lifetime abuse and high perceived stigma could lead the way for an ever more precise tailoring of treatment management.

Personality Factors and Attachment Styles as Predictors of the Therapeutic Efficacy of a Short-Term Ambulatory Intervention for Depression

BACKGROUND

Several studies have shown a significant positive impact of intensive short-term ambulatory psychiatric interventions for depression. However, data on outcomes related to factors that are predictive of the efficacy of these interventions in terms of remission or response to treatment remain scarce. The goal of this naturalistic prospective study was to identify factors, including Big Five Inventory personality traits and attachment style, that are predictive of the efficacy of crisis interventions (CIns) in major depressive disorder.

METHODS

The study included 234 adult outpatients with major depressive disorder who completed all assessments in a study of a short-term intensive ambulatory CIn. In this study, we evaluated sociodemographic factors, and scores on the Global Assessment of Functioning Scale, the Big Five Inventory personality assessment, the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale, and the Adult Attachment Scale.

RESULTS

Mean scores on the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale decreased significantly from 26.3 (SD=9.0) at admission to 10.6 (SD=8.1) at the end of the CIn (t=23.9; P<0.001); 99 patients (42%) experienced remission, 151 patients (65%) were considered treatment responders, and 98 patients (42%) both responded to treatment and experienced remission. Results of multivariate regression analysis showed that education level and family intervention were associated with response to treatment. Neuroticism traits were related to a lower rate of response to treatment. The dependency dimension attachment style had a positive impact on response to treatment.

CONCLUSIONS

Neuroticism traits can predict clinical outcomes after a short-term intensive psychiatric intervention for depression. Results of family interviews, education level, and Global Assessment of Functioning scores should also be taken into account in predicting clinical outcomes.

Personality features, dissociation, self-stigma, hope, and the complex treatment of depressive disorder

OBJECTIVE

Identifying the predictors of response to psychiatric and psychotherapeutic treatments may be useful for increasing treatment efficacy in pharmacoresistant depressive patients. The goal of this study was to examine the influence of dissociation, hope, personality trait, and selected demographic factors in treatment response of this group of patients.

METHODS

Pharmacoresistant depressive inpatients were enrolled in the study. All patients completed Clinical Global Impression - both objective and subjective form (CGI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) at baseline and after 6 weeks of combined pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy (group cognitive-behavioral or group psychodynamic) treatment as an outcome measures. The Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale (ISMI), Dissociative Experience Scale (DES), Adult Dispositional Hope Scale (ADHS), and Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI-R) were completed at the start of the treatment with the intention to find the predictors of treatment efficacy.

RESULTS

The study included 72 patients who were hospitalized for the pharmacoresistant major depression; 63 of them completed the study. The mean scores of BDI-II, BAI, subjCGI, and objCGI significantly decreased during the treatment. BDI-II relative change statistically significantly correlated with the total ISMI score, Discrimination Experience (ISMI subscale), and Harm Avoidance (TCI-R personality trait). According to stepwise regression, the strongest factors connected to BDI-II relative change were the duration of the disorder and Discrimination Experience (domain of ISMI). ObjCGI relative change significantly correlated with the level of dissociation (DES), the total ISMI score, hope in ADHS total score, and Self-Directedness (TCI-R). According to stepwise regression, the strongest factor connected to objCGI relative change was Discrimination Experience (domain of ISMI). The existence of comorbid personality disorder did not influence the treatment response.

CONCLUSION

According to the results of the present study, patients with pharmacoresistant depressive disorders, who have had more experience with discrimination because of their mental struggles, showed a poorer response to treatment.

Impact of dissociation on treatment of depressive and anxiety spectrum disorders with and without personality disorders

OBJECTIVE

The central goal of the study was to analyze the impact of dissociation on the treatment effectiveness in patients with anxiety/neurotic spectrum and depressive disorders with or without comorbid personality disorders.

METHODS

The research sample consisted of inpatients who were hospitalized in the psychiatric department and met the ICD-10 criteria for diagnosis of depressive disorder, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, mixed anxiety-depressive disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia, obsessive compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, adjustment disorders, dissociative/conversion disorders, somatoform disorder, or other anxiety/neurotic spectrum disorder. The participants completed these measures at the start and end of the therapeutic program - Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, a subjective version of Clinical Global Impression-Severity, Sheehan Patient-Related Anxiety Scale, and Dissociative Experience Scale.

RESULTS

A total of 840 patients with anxiety or depressive spectrum disorders, who were resistant to pharmacological treatment on an outpatient basis and were referred for hospitalization for the 6-week complex therapeutic program, were enrolled in this study. Of them, 606 were statistically analyzed. Data from the remaining 234 (27.86%) patients were not used because of various reasons (103 prematurely finished the program, 131 did not fill in most of the questionnaires). The patients' mean ratings on all measurements were significantly reduced during the treatment. Also, 67.5% reached at least minimal improvement (42.4% showed moderate and more improvement, 35.3% of the patients reached remission). The patients without comorbid personality disorder improved more significantly in the reduction of depressive symptoms than those with comorbid personality disorder. However, there were no significant differences in change in anxiety levels and severity of the mental issues between the patients with and without personality disorders. Higher degree of dissociation at the beginning of the treatment predicted minor improvement, and also, higher therapeutic change was connected to greater reduction of the dissociation level.

CONCLUSION

Dissociation is an important factor that influences the treatment effectiveness in anxiety/depression patients with or without personality disorders resistant to previous treatment. Targeting dissociation in the treatment of these disorders may be beneficial.

Observing the determinants of the psychotherapeutic process in depressive disorders. A clinical case study within a psychodynamic approach

This paper focuses on the relationship between depressive disorders, personality configurations, and mental functioning. A one-year treatment of a young man with the diagnosis of Depression is presented: the clinical and empirical points of view are described in depth through an assessment at the beginning and at one year after of an oriented psychodynamic psychotherapy. SCID I and II and HAMRS were administered to the patient in assessment phase. In the same phase he filled in BDI-II, and DEQ; the psychotherapist completed SWAP-200. These clinician instruments were used again after 1 year of the treatment. The PDM point of view is also presented. All sessions are audiotaped: 12 verbatim transcripts were coded with the Defense Mechanisms Rating Scale and CCRT. The results show a decrease in depressive symptoms, a change in some personality configurations, but a substantial invariance of the introjective profile, and a modification in mental functioning.

Influence of personality on the outcome of treatment in depression: systematic review and meta-analysis

There continues to be debate about the influence of personality disorder on the outcome of depressive disorders and is relative interactions with treatment. To determine whether personality disorder, both generically and in terms of individual clusters, leads to a worse outcome in patients with depressive disorders and whether this is influenced by type of treatment, a systematic electronic search of MEDLINE, CINAHL, and PsycINFO from 1966, 1982, and 1882, respectively, until February 2007 was undertaken. The keyword terms depression, mental illness, and personality disorder were used. All references were reviewed and personal correspondence was undertaken. Only English language papers were considered. Any English language paper studying a depressed adult population was considered for inclusion. Studies needed to clearly define depression and personality disorder using peer-reviewed instruments or International Classification of Disease/Diagnostic Statistical Manual criteria. Outcome assessment at greater than 3 weeks was necessary. Final inclusion papers were agreed on by consensus by at least two reviewers. All data were extracted using predetermined criteria for depression by at least two reviewers in parallel. Disagreement was settled by consensus. Complex data extraction was confirmed within the study group. Data were synthesized using log odds ratios in the Cochrane RevMan 5 program. The finding of comorbid personality disorder and depression was associated with a more than double the odds of a poor outcome for depression compared with those with no personality disorder (OR 2.16, CI 1.83-2.56). This effect was not ameliorated by the treatment modality used for the depressive disorder. This finding led to the conclusion that personality disorder has a negative impact on the outcome of depression. This finding is important in considering prognosis in depressive disorders.

Mauling of the "Celtic Tiger": clinical characteristics and outcome of first-episode depression secondary to the economic recession in Ireland

BACKGROUND

There is a dearth of studies describing clinical characteristics and outcome of patients who present with mood disorders related to economic recession.

AIMS

To describe a cohort of patients admitted with first-episode depression related to the Irish economic recession and compare this cohort with all other first-episode depressives admitted during the same time period (2009-2010).

METHODS

A cohort of 137 patients admitted with first-episode depression to an independent university teaching hospital was prospectively identified and followed up from admission over 2 years (mean follow-up 430 days, s.d. 176 days). The cohort was divided into "Celtic Tiger" (patients with first-episode depression secondary to the economic recession) and non-Celtic Tiger control patients (other first-episode depressed patients). Both groups were compared in terms of clinical characteristics at baseline and outcome over follow-up.

RESULTS

The number of admissions due to first depressive episodes were higher in recession years 2009/10 than in pre-recession years 2008/9. Celtic Tiger patients were predominantly male and more severely depressed with more marked suicidal ideation (χ(2), p<0.001) than control patients. They were more likely to recover (χ(2), p=0.013), less likely to recur (χ(2), p<0.001) and had faster time to recovery (log rank, p<0.001) and slower time to full recurrence (log rank, p=0.001). The Celtic Tiger patients spent more time asymptomatic and less time at full and subthreshold depression levels over follow-up.

LIMITATIONS

Study setting of centre specializing in affective disorders treatment, retrospective nature of follow-up after initial prospective interview and lack of patient follow-up interview.

CONCLUSION

The study describes a subgroup of patients with severe depression associated with economic recession with likely high suicide risk but very favourable outcome.

Personality disorders and outcome of inpatient treatment for depression: a 1-year prospective follow-up study

This study examines the relationship of personality disorders (PDs) with the outcome of an inpatient treatment for depression. One hundred sixty-eight inpatients with unipolar depression (41% with PD according to SCID-II) were assessed at admission, discharge, and 1-year follow-up. Patients without as well as with PD showed a significant and comparable intake-to-discharge symptom reduction in all inventories. At posttreatment, patients with PD scored higher in self-report measures of symptom severity (Brief Symptom Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory) than patients without PD, due to their higher symptom levels at intake. However, there was no difference in clinician-rated therapy outcome (Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression [17-item version], Global Assessment of Functioning Scale, Clinical Global Impression Scale) between both patient groups at discharge. At 1-year follow-up, patients without PD maintained their treatment outcome, whereas patients with PD showed a slight increase in symptom severity, compared to discharge. The results suggest that a difference in acute treatment outcome between depressed patients with and without PD may be found using self-ratings but not expert ratings of symptom severity. Furthermore, the importance of subsequent outpatient treatment that takes into account the special needs of depressed patients with comorbid PD is highlighted.

Role of substance abuse comorbidity and personality on the outcome of depression in bipolar disorder: harm avoidance influences medium-term treatment outcome

Comorbid conditions are frequent in bipolar disorder (BD) and may complicate the treatment and course of illness. We investigated the role of substance use disorder (SUD), axis II personality disorders (PD) and continuous personality traits on the medium-term outcome (6 months) of treatment for bipolar depression. One hundred and thirty-nine BD patients meeting criteria for a depressive episode were included in the study. SUD and PD were diagnosed according to structured interviews. Personality dimensions were evaluated by the Temperament and Character Inventory. Depressive severity over time was evaluated by the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression. Neither PD nor SUD influenced the outcome of depression. Variables independently associated with a poor outcome were a high baseline severity and high scores for the temperamental trait of Harm Avoidance. Though several limitations characterize the present study, neurotic personality traits seem to be associated with a slower recovery from depressive symptoms in BD, independently from their initial severity.

Do personality problems improve during psychodynamic supportive-expressive psychotherapy? Secondary outcome results from a randomized controlled trial for psychiatric outpatients with personality disorders

Studies involving patients with personality disorders (PDs) have not focused on improvement of core aspects of the PD. The authors examined changes in quality of object relations, interpersonal problems, psychological mindedness, and personality traits in a sample of 156 patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.) PD diagnoses being randomized to either manualized or nonmanualized dynamic psychotherapy. Effect sizes adjusted for symptomatic change and reliable change indices were calculated. The authors found that both treatments were equally effective at reducing personality pathology. Only in neuroticism did the nonmanualized group do better during the follow-up period. A stubborn behaviour: The failure of antidepressants to reduce suicide rates

Over the past decades the rate of completed suicide has remained quite stable, that of suicide attempts even seems to have increased (to the extent it has been studied in defined regions). These are puzzling observations, since depression is the major suicide precursor and since antidepressants over the years have been increasingly used in the treatment of depression. These observations have not attracted sufficient attention, possibly because they do not accord with consensus opinions about depression treatment in psychiatry today. In this paper a number of possible explanations are discussed. They not only deserve but are definitely in need of systematic investigation.

A symptom level examination of the relationship between Cluster B personality disorders and patterns of criminality and violence in women

The psychometric properties and structure of the Cluster B Personality Disorder criteria (Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic, and Narcissistic) are examined in a sample of 261 female inmates using a self-report screen followed by a full diagnostic interview. The results of the structural analyses in this sample demonstrated good internal consistency and convergence, but poor discriminant validity between disorders. An exploratory factor analysis found that the structure of these disorders was best accounted for by a four-factor solution that paralleled the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV-TR; APA, 2000) classification scheme with some significant and notable exceptions. Using the factor scores generated from the factor analysis, the personality profiles of the women were compared with several behavioral indices, including instant offense, institutional infractions, and self-report violence and victimization within the prison. Of particular importance was the consistent relationship observed between narcissistic personality traits and threatening and violent behavior within the prison combined with the impulsive but less malignant presentation of antisocial personality traits among this sample of women. Results are discussed as they inform our understanding of the structural integrity of the four Cluster B diagnostic categories and the relationship of these personality disorders to different types of criminality and violence.

Factors affecting time to rehospitalization for patients with major depressive disorder

Major depressive disorder is a common psychiatric condition. Hospitalization is usually indicated for patients with more severe symptoms and severe functional impairment. Rehospitalization is known as the re-emergence of significant depressive symptoms. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the risk factors affecting time to rehospitalization. Rehospitalization status was monitored for all patients with major depressive disorder discharged from Kai-Suan Psychiatric Hospital between 1 January 2002 and 31 December 2003. Patients were followed up with respect to rehospitalization until 31 December 2004. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to calculate the median time to rehospitalization. Risk factors associated with rehospitalization were examined on Cox proportional hazards regression. Three hundred patients were recruited. Median time to readmission was 174 days (SD = 37). Comorbid alcohol abuse/dependence (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.841, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.229-2.758, P < 0.01), comorbid personality disorders (HR = 1.530, 95%CI = 1.053-2.223, P < 0.05), and the number of previous hospitalizations (HR = 1.121, 95%CI = 1.056-1.190, P < 0.001) were found to be predictors of the shorter time to rehospitalization over the 360-day study. Further research should be carried out to test risk factors in a prospective study, and to study the cost-effectiveness of interventions to reduce risk factors and rehospitalizations.

Long-term social functioning after depression treated by psychiatrists: a review

OBJECTIVES

Numerous long-term studies of depression in psychiatric settings have shown a poor clinical outcome but little emphasis has been placed on psychosocial or functional outcome in studies to date. This article reviews published data on long-term social functioning after depression and considers why psychosocial recovery appears delayed compared with clinical recovery.

METHODS

Searches were carried out of the databases MEDLINE, PSYCHLIT and EMBASE for articles published from 1980 using keywords relating to social and functional outcomes of unipolar and bipolar depression. Review articles and relevant textbooks were also searched.

RESULTS

The few outcome studies published have described long-term functional impairment in the majority of patients but have been limited by methodological shortcomings. Psychosocial impairment tends to persist even after clinical remission from depression. Residual symptomatology after remission from depression may lead to enduring psychosocial impairment, as may subtle neurocognitive deficits. Axis I and II comorbidities predict a poor psychosocial outcome, but episodes of depression do not appear to lead to personality 'scarring'.

CONCLUSIONS

Future outcome studies need to focus on longitudinal social functioning. Full functional recovery after an episode of depression should be the goal of treatment as enduring residual symptoms lead to long-term psychosocial impairment.

Neuroticism as a common feature of the depressive and anxiety disorders: A test of the revised integrative hierarchical model in a national sample

The revised integrative hierarchical model of depression and anxiety (S. Mineka, D. Watson, & L. A. Clark, 1998) proposes that high levels of neuroticism are shared between the depressive and anxiety disorders. This perspective was evaluated with data from the National Comorbidity Survey (N = 5,847), a population-based community sample. Analyses were based on both a broadband (i.e., diagnostic class) and a narrowband (i.e., specific disorder) approach. Results supported the model insofar as high neuroticism was shared across the depressive and anxiety disorders and was particularly elevated in people with comorbid depression and anxiety. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for understanding the association between personality and the depressive and anxiety disorders in a community sample and for the revised integrative hierarchical perspective.

Depression and personality disorder

Research into the relationship between depression and personality disorder is compromised by a number of methodologic factors, including differing concepts of personality disorder, the validity of a personality disorder diagnosis, the effect of mood on diagnosis, and the overlap between some personality disorder symptoms and mood symptoms. Personality pathology is common in patients with personality disorder. Reasons for this include a "scar" effect of chronic low mood on attitudes and behaviors, as well as possible risk factors via certain personality traits. The negative effect of comorbid personality disorder on treatment outcome in depressed patients may be less than previously believed. Possible reasons include treatment bias in non-controlled trials and the increasing use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors rather than tricyclic antidepressants. Many personality traits and disorders may be part of the psychopathology of depression and share a common origin.

Longitudinal outcome in patients with bipolar disorder assessed by life-charting is influenced by DSM-IV personality disorder symptoms

OBJECTIVES

Few studies have examined the question of how personality features impact outcome in bipolar disorder (BD), though results from extant work and studies in major depressive disorder suggest that personality features are important in predicting outcome. The primary purpose of this paper was to examine the impact of DSM-IV personality disorder symptoms on long-term clinical outcome in BD.

METHODS

The study used a 'life-charting' approach in which 87 BD patients were followed regularly and treated according to published guidelines. Outcome was determined by examining symptoms over the most recent year of follow-up and personality symptoms were assessed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-II) instrument at entry into the life-charting study.

RESULTS

Patients with better outcomes had fewer personality disorder symptoms in seven out of 10 disorder categories and Cluster A personality disorder symptoms best distinguished euthymic and symptomatic patients.

CONCLUSIONS

These results raise important questions about the mechanisms linking personality pathology and outcome in BD, and argue that conceptual models concerning personality pathology and BD need to be further developed. Treatment implications of our results, such as need for psychosocial interventions and treatment algorithms, are also described.

Consequences of comorbid personality disorders in major depression

To describe consequences of the presence of a comorbid personality disorder (PD) in inpatients with a major depressive disorder (MDD) on variables connected to course and outcome of the unipolar affective illness, 117 inpatients with a major depressive episode were assessed at various times during inpatient treatment. Trait markers (including personality and PDs) were obtained toward the end of the treatment, when acute psychopathology had largely remitted. Fifty-one percent of all patients fulfilled the criteria for a DSM-III-R PD, 15% met the criteria for two or more PDs, and 18% fulfilled the criteria for at least one cluster A or B PD. Except for age of onset, number of suicide attempts and quality of life all other outcome and course variables were unrelated to the presence or absence of a comorbid PD. In this sample, one comorbid PD in patients with MDD was of limited relevance to the course of the affective illness, especially if it was a cluster C PD. Two or more comorbid PDs in patients with unipolar depression tended to reduce quality of life and have an earlier age of onset. Patients with cluster A or B PD and MDD had attempted suicide more often than patients with a cluster C PD and MDD. Although comorbid cluster C PDs were seen in all age groups of patients with an MDD, cluster A or B PDs and the presence of more than one PD were mainly seen in younger patients with an MDD.
