Abstract
Decades of research finds associations between personality traits and health. In recent years, it has become clear that the activities of the immune system play a key role in linking these variables. In the current work, we add to this research by exploring the relationship between Big Five personality traits and (Study 1) polymorphisms known to impact cytokine release and (Study 2) immunological parameters measured in vivo (differential white blood cell counts, plasma proinflammatory cytokine levels) and in vitro (proinflammatory cytokine release by peripheral blood mononuclear cells, Staphylococcus aureus growth in plasma). Results provide insights into potential mechanistic drivers of the link between personality and immune function and the possibility that, in some cases, relationships between personality and immune function may be sex differentiated.

Cytokines and Water Distribution in Anorexia Nervosa. Mediators Inflamm 2021; 2021:8811051. Abstract
In patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), decreased intracellular (ICW), extracellular (ECW), and total body water (TBW) as well as changes in serum cytokine concentrations have been reported. In this exploratory study, we measured body composition and serum cytokine levels in patients with AN (n = 27) and healthy controls (HCs; n = 13). Eating disorder symptom severity was assessed using the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q). Body composition was determined by bioimpedance analysis (BIA) which provided information on ICW, ECW, and TBW. Following blood collection, 27 cytokines and chemokines were quantified using multiplex ELISA-based technology: Eotaxin, Eotaxin-3, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interferon- (IFN-) γ, interleukin- (IL-) 1α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-7, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12/IL-23p40, IL-12p70, IL-13, IL-15, IL-16, IL-17A, interferon γ-induced protein- (IP-) 10, macrophage inflammatory protein- (MIP-) 1α, MIP-1β, monocyte chemoattractant protein- (MCP-) 1, MCP-4, thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC), TNF-α, and TNF-β. ICW, ECW, and TBW volumes were significantly lower in patients with AN than in HCs. In the whole sample, GM-CSF, MCP-4, and IL-4 were positively, whereas IFN-γ, IL-6, and IL-10 were negatively associated with all three parameters of body water. In AN participants, we found a statistically significant negative correlation of IL-10 with ICW, ECW, and TBW. Our results suggest an interaction between body water and the cytokine system. Underlying mechanisms are unclear but may involve a loss of water from the gut, kidneys, or skin due to AN-associated inflammatory processes.

Abstract
Abstract
In response to invasion of pathogens, hosts present fever and a series of behavioural changes including reduced grooming, reduction of foraging, decreased locomotion, withdrawing from social activities and reproductive process, which are collectively termed sickness behaviour. Fever as well as sickness behaviour are adaptive and benefit the host to reduce pathology caused by infections and opportunity costs for time away from foraging, reproduction and predator avoidance. Antipathogenic fever and sickness behaviour are mediated proximately by cytokines including pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Pro-inflammation cytokines trigger these sickness responses, while anti-inflammatory cytokines constrain these responses and prevent damage to host from exaggerated responses. The present study reviews the characterization of fever and sickness behaviour regulated by cytokines during infection.

Abstract
Pro-inflammatory cytokines produce manifestations of sickness during inflammation, such as malaise and lethargy. They also contribute to effects of inflammation on mood. Anti-inflammatory cytokines counteract damage caused by inflammatory processes and can limit the severity of inflammation. However, very little is known about the role of anti-inflammatory cytokines in sickness and mood changes during immune activation. The purpose of this study was to determine if a prototypical anti-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin 10 (IL-10), can offset sickness behavior and anxiety caused by a pro-inflammatory cytokine, and whether IL-10 itself modifies anxiety. Rodent models of sickness display suppression of behavioral activity that may reflect lethargy or malaise, while models of anxiety display reduced exploration in several tasks. The effects of peripheral single dose of cytokines on open field exploration, social interaction and elevated plus maze (EPM) tests in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were measured at 30-50 min post-treatment. The prototypical pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β (1 μg, i.p.) caused a decrease in locomotor activity indicative of sickness behavior, but disproportionately reduced central area exploration in the open field, open arm exploration in the EPM and lowered social interaction. IL-10 (1 μg, i.p.) had no effect on locomotor activity, but itself produced anxiety-like behavior in the open field and EPM. However, rats co-treated with both IL-10 and IL-1β showed locomotor activity, open field, social interaction and EPM behaviors very similar to control groups. This data demonstrate that IL-10 is capable of mitigating the sickness and anxiogenic effects caused by IL-1β, but that immune imbalance toward either a pro-inflammatory or an anti-inflammatory state can produce anxiety. This has importance for understanding the scope of immune changes that produce psychiatric symptoms, and provides preliminary indication that anti-inflammatory cytokines may be potentially useful in treatment of anxiety induced by inflammatory conditions.

Abstract
Proinflammatory cytokines like interleukin-1β (IL-1β) affect the control of breathing. Our aim is to determine the effect of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 οn the control of breathing. IL-10 knockout mice (IL-10-/-, n = 10) and wild-type mice (IL-10+/+, n = 10) were exposed to the following test gases: hyperoxic hypercapnia 7% CO2-93% O2, normoxic hypercapnia 7% CO2-21% O2, hypoxic hypercapnia 7% CO2-10% O2, and hypoxic normocapnia 3% CO2-10% O2. The ventilatory function was assessed using whole body plethysmography. Recombinant mouse IL-10 (rIL-10; 10 μg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally to wild-type mice (n = 10) 30 min before the onset of gas challenge. IL-10 was administered in neonatal medullary slices (10-30 ng/ml, n = 8). We found that IL-10-/- mice exhibited consistently increased frequency and reduced tidal volume compared with IL-10+/+ mice during room air breathing and in all test gases (by 23.62 to 33.2%, P < 0.05 and -36.23 to -41.69%, P < 0.05, respectively). In all inspired gases, the minute ventilation of IL-10-/- mice was lower than IL-10+/+ (by -15.67 to -22.74%, P < 0.05). The rapid shallow breathing index was higher in IL-10-/- mice compared with IL-10+/+ mice in all inspired gases (by 50.25 to 57.5%, P < 0.05). The intraperitoneal injection of rIL-10 caused reduction of the respiratory rate and augmentation of the tidal volume in room air and also in all inspired gases (by -12.22 to -29.53 and 32.18 to 45.11%, P < 0.05, respectively). IL-10 administration in neonatal rat (n = 8) in vitro rhythmically active medullary slice preparations did not affect either rhythmicity or peak amplitude of hypoglossal nerve discharge. In conclusion, IL-10 may induce a slower and deeper pattern of breathing.

Abstract
N-Acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) is a well-known medication, primarily used as a mucolytic agent in pulmonary disease. Recently, we have found that NAC possesses antipyretic properties. The aim of the present study was to investigate the mechanism by which NAC attenuates fever. The concentration of interleukin (IL)-10 and prostaglandin (PG) E2 were measured using ELISA kit in the supernatants aspirated after stimulation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) with lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 1μg/mL) and NAC (10mM). The body temperature of the Wistar rats was measured using biotelemetry system. To inhibit endotoxic fever, NAC (200mg/kg; i.p.) was injected into the rats one hour prior to the LPS administration (50μg/kg; i.p.). The pre-treatment of LPS-stimulated PBMCs with NAC resulted in a significant decrease in PGE2 concentration in comparison to the cells treated with LPS alone (PGE2 level was 386.1±61.9pg/mL vs. 2078.9±157.9pg/mL, respectively, p<0.001). Furthermore, in these cells we observed a significant increase in IL-10 level (142.1±2.62pg/mL in NAC+LPS stimulated cells vs. 54.4±0.6pg/mL in LPS stimulated cells, p<0.001). The injection of anti-IL-10 antibody into the rats abolished antipyretic properties of NAC. Body temperature in animals treated with anti-IL-10+NAC/LPS was 38.28±0.12°C vs. 37.73±0.06°C in IgG+NAC/LPS rats (p<0.001) and 38.31±0.20°C in NaCl/LPS-treated animals (n.s.). Based on these data, we conclude that NAC acts as an antipyretic via IL-10 stimulation. This finding provides a new insight into the immunopharmacology of NAC, and we believe that in a future it will contribute to the new and/or more accurate application of NAC in medicine.

Abstract
Sickness behaviour, a syndrome characterized by a general reduction in animal activity, is part of the active-phase response to fight infection. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an effective endotoxin to model sickness behaviour, reduces thirst and sodium excretion, and increases neurohypophysial secretion. Here we review the effects of LPS on thirst and sodium appetite. Altered renal function and hydromineral fluid intake in response to LPS occur in the context of behavioural reorganization, which manifests itself as part of the syndrome. Recent data show that, in addition to its classical effect on thirst, non-septic doses of LPS injected intraperitoneally produce a preferential inhibition of intracellular thirst versus extracellular thirst. Moreover, LPS also reduced hypertonic NaCl intake in sodium-depleted rats that entered a sodium appetite test. Antagonism of α2 -adrenoceptors abolished the effect of LPS on sodium appetite. LPS and cytokine transduction potentially recruit brain noradrenaline and α2 -adrenoceptors to control sodium appetite and sickness behaviour.

Abstract
An effective method for controlling brain damage and neurodegeneration caused by inflammation remains elusive. Down-expression of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory cytokines resulting in endotoxin tolerance is reported as an alternative anti-infection treatment. Nonetheless, because the dosage and action site are hard to control, endotoxin tolerance caused by low-dose LPS injection in brain tissue may induce side effects. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that static magnetic fields (SMF) stimulate endotoxin tolerance in brain tissue. In this study, survival rate and pathological changes in brain tissues of LPS-challenged mice were examined with and without SMF treatment. In addition, the effects of SMF exposure on growth rate and cytokine expression of LPS-challenged BV-2 microglia cells were monitored. Our results showed that SMF pre-exposure had positive effects on the survival rate and histological outcomes of LPS-treated mice. Furthermore, SMF exposure significantly decreased IL-6 expression in BV-2 cells (p < 0.05) by a phenomenon similar to endotoxin tolerance. We suggest that SMF has potential as an alternative simulation source for controlling LPS-induced excess neuro-inflammatory response.

Although increasing evidence demonstrates that both chronic stressors and inflammatory immune activation contribute to pathophysiology and behavioral alterations associated with major depression, little is known about the interaction effect of central inflammatory immune activation and stress on depressive-like behavior. Our previous work has shown that 14-day chronic forced swim stress induces significant depressive-like behavior. The present investigation assessed whether pro-inflammatory cytokine and anti-inflammatory cytokine challenges have differential interaction effect on depressive-like behavior induced by chronic forced swim stress in rats. The pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory immune challenges were achieved respectively by central administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a pro-inflammatory cytokine inducer, and interleukin-10 (IL-10), an anti-inflammatory cytokine. It was found that either central LPS treatment alone or chronic forced swim stress alone significantly induced depressive-like behavior, including reduced body weight gain, reduced saccharin preference and reduced locomotor activity. However, there was no significant synergistic or additive effect of central LPS treatment and stress on depressive-like behavior. LPS treatment did not exacerbate the depressive-like behavior induced by forced swim stress. Nevertheless, IL-10 reversed depressive-like behavior induced by forced swim stress, a finding indicating that IL-10 has antidepressant effect on behavioral depression induced by stress. The present findings provide new insight into the complexity of the immunity-inflammation hypothesis of depression.

Abstract
The macrophage (MΦ) is an essential cellular first responder in the innate immune system, sensing, alerting, removing and destroying intrinsic and extrinsic pathogens. While congenital aplasia of granulocytes, T or B lymphocytes leads to serious disease, lack of MΦs is incompatible with life. The MΦ, however, is not a monomorphic entity. These constructers, repairers and defenders of the body are diverse in form and function. What controls MΦ phenotype is beginning to be understood and involves a complex interplay of origination, location and microenvironment. Common to all MΦ developmental pathways are pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines. MΦs respond to these bioactives in distinct ways developing recently recognized activation phenotypes that canonically support bacterial clearance (classical activation), parasite defense/tissue repair (alternative activation) and anti-inflammation (deactivation). Critically, the same cytokines which orchestrate immune defense and homeostasis dramatically impact sense of well being and cognition by eliciting sickness symptoms. Such behaviors are the manifestation of pro/anti-inflammatory cytokine action in the brain and are a direct consequence of MΦ function. This review describes the "new" archetypal MΦ activation states, delineates microglia phenotypic plasticity and explores the importance of these macrophage activation states to sickness behavior.

Abstract
When guinea pig pups are separated from their mothers in a novel environment, an initial period of active behavior (vocalizing, locomotor activity) wanes after an hour or so and is replaced by a second, passive stage characterized by a crouched stance, closed eyes, and extensive piloerection. If pups are given a peripheral injection of 7-14μg of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) prior to testing, the passive behaviors occur immediately upon separation. We found that intracerebroventricular infusion of 1-10μg of CRF did not increase passive behavior relative to vehicle infusion, but that peripheral injection of the anti-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin-10, attenuated the passive behavior induced by peripheral CRF injection. These results together with previous findings suggest that peripheral CRF administration affects behavior of separated guinea pig pups through a mechanism that involves peripheral proinflammatory activity. The possible role of endogenous peripheral CRF in the behavioral response of untreated pups during maternal separation is considered.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of a sheep meat-based diet on the thyroid hormone concentrations and energy expenditure of Sprague–Dawley rats. The diets, a sheep meat diet (SMD) or a casein control diet (CD), each based on a standard formulation (AIN-93G), contained 18.3% protein, 7.4% fat and 60.0% carbohydrate, and were isocaloric (15.9kJ/g dry matter). Serum tri-iodothryonine (T3), thyroxine (T4), free tri-iodothyronine (FT3) and free thyroxine (FT4) concentrations, oxygen consumption rate (OCR), bodyweight, bodyweight gain and activities of liver sodium–potassium-adenosinetriphosphatase (Na,K-ATPase) and Ca2+-dependent adenosine triphosphatase (Ca-ATPase) were measured. Compared with the CD, the SMD increased the serum FT3 concentration on Day 7 (P = 0.004) and Day 14 (P < 0.001). Serum albumin concentrations, which may influence the amount of thyroid hormones bound, were significantly lower in the SMD group on Day 7 (P < 0.001) and Day 14 (P = 0.02) than those in the CD group. Both liver Na,K-ATPase and Ca-ATPase activities were significantly higher in rats consuming the SMD on Day 7 (P < 0.001, P = 0.001) and Day 14 (P < 0.001, P < 0.001) respectively. OCRs were significantly higher in rats consuming the SMD on Day 6 (P = 0.023) and Day 13 (P = 0.014). Both bodyweight and bodyweight gains were significantly lower in the SMD group. We concluded that sheep meat consumption decreased the serum albumin concentrations, which increased the serum FT3 concentrations. This lead to FT3 promoting the OCRs and the activities of Na,K-ATPase and Ca-ATPase, resulting in reduced bodyweight and bodyweight gain, presumably through greater energy expenditure. Thus, energy expenditure appears to have been enhanced in rats fed the SMD.

Abstract
The present study examined the effect of anti-inflammatory agents on the behavioral and plasma cortisol responses of guinea pig pups during isolation in a novel environment. In Experiment 1, intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of interleukin-10 (IL-10), across a range of doses, significantly reduced passive behaviors of isolated pups. In Experiment 2, neither i.c.v. IL-10 nor alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone affected the plasma cortisol response to the separation procedure. These results provide further evidence that the passive behaviors of isolated guinea pig pups are mediated by proinflammatory cytokines and indicate that cytokines do not affect behavior indirectly by means of an action on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal activity.

Abstract
Early maternal separation and other disruptions of attachment relations are known to increase risk for the later onset of depressive illness in vulnerable individuals. It is suggested here that sensitization involving proinflammatory processes may contribute to this effect. This argument is based on: (1) current notions of the role of proinflammatory cytokines in depressive illness; (2) evidence that proinflammatory cytokines mediate depressive-like behavior during separation in a rodent model of infant attachment; and (3) comparisons of the effects of early proinflammatory activation versus maternal separation on later proinflammatory activity and biobehavioral processes related to depression. The possible interaction of proinflammatory processes and corticotropin-releasing factor in the sensitization process is discussed.

Abstract
Nosocomial hyperthermia (fever) occurs in about 30% of all medical patients at some time during their hospital stay. In patients admitted to the intensive care unit with severe sepsis the incidence of hyperthermia is greater than 90%, while in a specialized neurological critical care unit the incidence is reported as 47%. In contrast, hyperthermia during anaesthesia is rare owing to the impairment of thermoregulation by anaesthetic agents. This article is designed to give an overview on the various causes of hyperthermia with special emphasis on fever during general and regional anaesthesia in general and neurological critical care patients.

Abstract
The role of pro-inflammatory cytokines in psychiatric disorders has been the focus of great research attention in recent years. Paradoxically, the same is not true for anti-inflammatory cytokines. In the present study, we assessed the behavioral profile of animals with altered expression of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. We performed a battery of tests to assess anxiety, depressive-like and cognitive behaviors in mice overexpressing IL-10 (PMT10) and IL-10(-/-) animals; in the later mice we also tested the behavioral effect of IL-10 administration. In the forced-swimming test, IL-10(-/-) females displayed increased depressive-like behavior; importantly, this phenotype was reverted by the injection of IL-10. Moreover, mice overexpressing IL-10 presented a decreased depressive-like behavior. Despite the presence of a similar trend, male animals did not reach significant differences in depressive-like behavior. Assessment in the open-field showed that the absence of IL-10 decreased the percentage of time spent in the center of the arena in both male and female mice, while male animals overexpressing IL-10 revealed an opposite behavior. For both sexes, imbalance in IL-10 levels did not affect spatial reference memory. In conclusion, variations in IL-10 expression are associated with an altered depressive-like behavior, but do not influence cognitive performance. Interestingly, IL-10 imbalance produced more profound behavioral changes in females than in male animals. This is in accordance with clinical data demonstrating an increased susceptibility of women to mood disorders, suggesting an interplay between anti-inflammatory cytokines and sexual steroids.

Abstract
Systemic exposure to lipopolysaccharides (LPS) produces a variety of effects, including movement-evoked hyperalgesia that can be measured using the grip force assay in mice. Because both lethality and enhanced sensitivity to cutaneous pain following exposure to endotoxins have each been attributed to inflammatory mediators, we explored the possibility that LPS-induced movement-evoked hyperalgesia is also sensitive to manipulations of glucocorticoids that regulate these other LPS responses. We found that the hyperalgesic effect of LPS (5mg/kg s.c.) in mice that were adrenalectomized did not differ from that in control mice that were sham operated, even though mortality after LPS was potentiated by adrenalectomy. The development of tolerance to the movement-evoked hyperalgesic effect of LPS also did not differ between adrenalectomized and sham-operated control mice. In addition, mifepristone (25mg/kg s.c.), a glucocorticoid antagonist, did not attenuate the hyperalgesic effect of LPS (2mg/kg s.c.), yet this dose of mifepristone was sufficient to enhance the incidence of lethality induced by LPS. Enhancement of glucocorticoid activity by two injections of dexamethasone (1mg/kg s.c.) had no effect on the degree of hyperalgesia in mice injected with LPS (5mg/kg s.c.), yet this dose of dexamethasone was sufficient to attenuate the incidence of mortality induced by LPS in adrenalectomized mice. Finally, morphine (10mg/kg i.p.) reversed the decrease in grip force caused by LPS (5mg/kg i.p.), supporting the interpretation that decreases in grip force produced by LPS reflect muscle hyperalgesia that is not sensitive to glucocorticoids.

Abstract
We have analyzed development of mechanical hyperalgesia after repeated systemic lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injections and correlated these findings with stimulation of astrocytes and microglia in spinal cord. Male Lewis rats received a single or seven intraperitoneal injections of LPS. Mechanical hyperalgesia was measured as rat hindpaw withdrawal thresholds (PWTs). We observed that a single LPS injection elicited a specific change of PWTs while stimulated spinal glial activation was identified by immunoreactivities of specific markers, ED1, P2X4 receptor, endothelial monocyte activating polypeptide II (EMAP II) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), respectively; multiple LPS treatments induced tolerance to mechanical hyperalgesia, whereas expression of ED1 and GFAP were further increased. In conclusion, we have demonstrated that the number of activated spinal glial cells was increased as an acute effect of LPS correlating with increased sensitivity to mechanical stimulation. However chronic exposure to LPS can develop a tolerance to mechanical hyperalgesia despite ongoing signs of CNS glial activation.

Abstract
The relations between the estrous cycle, inflammatory responses and the development of tolerance to endotoxin were examined. Female Long-Evans rats were injected intraperitoneally with lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 200 microg/kg) or saline vehicle at 08:00h on either diestrus (D) or proestrus (P). Ninety-five minutes after injection locomotor activity was assessed in an automated non-novel open-field for 20 min. To assess tolerance development to LPS, rats were re-injected at the next identical stage (i.e. 4 days later; groups: DD, PP) or at the alternate stage (i.e. 6 days later; groups: DP, PD) of the estrous cycle and locomotor activity was again assessed. On Test Day 1 all groups injected with LPS exhibited similar significant activity decrements, regardless of the stage of the estrous cycle. However, on Test Day 2 rats which received both injections of LPS during proestrus (PP) showed no signs of tolerance development, whereas rats in all other groups were tolerant to LPS. In a follow up study, the time between injections was extended to 8 days. Still the animals injected both times at proestrus showed no signs of tolerance to LPS after the second injection. Thus, the stages of the estrous cycle both at the time of initial exposure and of re-exposure appear critical in the formation of behavioral tolerance to LPS in rats.

Abstract
Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a potent endotoxin, which produces "sickness behaviours" including loss of weight, loss of interest in food and decreased exploration. LPS has also been shown in some studies to cause deficits in various learning and memory abilities, while in others these LPS-induced learning impairments have been attributed to performance-related deficits rather than learning deficits per se. Here, we use the novelty-preference paradigm, a task that minimises performance-related factors such as motivation, in an attempt to extract and examine the effects of LPS on spatial learning. In addition, some studies have indicated that the anti-inflammatory cytokine Interleukin-10 (IL-10) can alleviate some of the symptoms induced by LPS. Here, we also examine the effect of IL-10 on feeding, motor and learning behaviours. We demonstrate that a single injection of LPS does produce a lack of interest in food and weight loss; LPS, however, does not impair habituation in the novelty-preference paradigm. Furthermore, co-injection of IL-10 with LPS does not attenuate the LPS-induced effects of weight loss and lack of food intake. Interestingly, a single injection of IL-10 produces abnormal patterns of exploration, a general increase in activity and abnormal patterns of habituation.

Activation of the immune system with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) has been shown to result in decreased consumption of normally preferred substances while at the same time not affecting palatability. The present study examined the effects LPS administration on both intake and palatability of a relatively unpalatable bitter-sweet taste. Bitter is thought to signal a danger cue to an animal representing a potential toxin-containing food. Using a one-bottle consumption test, voluntary intake of a sucrose-quinine (0.15 M sucrose + 0.00015 M quinine; S-Q) solution was assessed in rats on two conditioning days (days 1 and 4) after a systemic injection with LPS, LiCl, or NaCl. On the test day (day 7), rats were given 1h access to the same solution in the absence of any injection. In a separate experiment, rats fitted with intraoral cannulae received similar testing schedules, however, the solution was delivered intraorally, activating only the consummatory responses of the animal. During conditioning, rats received 5 brief (1 min) intraoral infusions of the taste across a 1h period following injections of LPS, LiCl or NaCl. Individual taste reactivity responses were recorded and analyzed. Both LPS and LiCl resulted in decreased consumption of the unpalatable taste relative to controls on the test day, suggesting typical conditioned taste avoidance. When the consummatory responses were examined, LPS-treatment produced an increase in active oral rejection relative to NaCl- and LiCl-treated groups on both conditioning days. The present study demonstrates that although both LPS- and LiCl-treatment result in similar conditioned avoidance using an intake measure, they do not elicit similar patterns of taste reactivity responding to intraoral infusions of the bitter-sweet taste. Furthermore, the present results suggest that immune activation with LPS-treatment results in increased rejection of a mildly aversive stimulus and supports the hypothesis that reorganization of behavioral priorities occurs during bacteria-induced sickness.

Abstract
In humans, exposure to endotoxins or pro-inflammatory cytokines induces a number of neuropsychological symptoms collectively referred to as 'flu-like syndrome'. The degree of overlap between flu-like syndrome and major depressive disorder is considerable and a close linkage between these has been predicted to arise due to hypersecretion of endogenous pro-inflammatory cytokines and activation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis. In animals, exposure to pro-inflammatory cytokines or endotoxins induces a 'sickness behavior' syndrome that is analogous to flu-like symptoms observed in human patients. The goal of the current paper is to review evidence implicating endotoxin- or cytokine-induced sickness behavior as an animal model of depression, with an emphasis on reduced consumption of highly palatable substances as a defining feature.

Abstract
Single exposures to lipopolysaccharides (LPS) produce deep tissue pain in humans and cutaneous hyperalgesia in rodents. While tolerance develops to many effects of LPS, sensitization to hyperalgesia is documented after a single injection. To determine the effect of long-term exposure to LPS, we explored the chronic effect of LPS on movement-evoked pain using a new assay based on grip force in mice. We found that a single systemic injection of LPS (i.p. or s.c.) induced a dose-related decrease in forelimb grip force responses beginning 6-8 h after injection and peaking between 9 and 24 h. The consequence of LPS is likely hyperalgesia rather than weakness as these decreases were rapidly attenuated by either 10 mg/kg of morphine i.p. or 10 microg of morphine injected intrathecally (i.t.). Complete tolerance to this hyperalgesia developed after repeated injections of LPS at doses of 0.9 mg/kg i.p. or 5 mg/kg s.c. Tolerance began after a single injection and was fully developed after as few as four injections of 5 mg/kg of LPS delivered s.c. The concentration of circulating LPS 5 h after a single parenteral injection was less in LPS-tolerant mice than naïve controls, suggesting that tolerance may result from a more efficient clearance of LPS from the circulation. Injected i.t., LPS also induced hyperalgesia, however, tolerance did not develop to multiple injections by this route. There was no cross-tolerance between s.c. and i.t. injections of LPS. These data indicate that decreases in grip force are a sensitive measure of LPS-induced movement-evoked hyperalgesia and that tolerance develops to parenteral but not central hyperalgesic effects of LPS.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Dantrolene is used for treatment of life-threatening hyperthermia, yet its thermoregulatory effects are unknown. We tested the hypothesis that dantrolene reduces the threshold (triggering core temperature) and gain (incremental increase) of shivering. Healthy volunteers were evaluated on 2 random days: control and dantrolene (approximately 2.5 mg/kg plus a continuous infusion). In Study 1, 9 men were warmed until sweating was provoked and then cooled until arteriovenous shunt constriction and shivering occurred. Sweating was quantified on the chest using a ventilated capsule. Absolute right middle fingertip blood flow was quantified using venous-occlusion volume plethysmography. A sustained increase in oxygen consumption identified the shivering threshold. In Study 2, 9 men were given cold lactated Ringer's solution i.v. to reduce core temperature approximately 2 degrees C/h. Cooling was stopped when shivering intensity no longer increased with further core cooling. The gain of shivering was the slope of oxygen consumption versus core temperature regression. In Study 1, sweating and vasoconstriction thresholds were similar on both days. In contrast, shivering threshold decreased 0.3 +/- 0.3 degrees C, P = 0.004, on the dantrolene day. In Study 2, dantrolene decreased the shivering threshold from 36.7 +/- 0.2 to 36.3 +/- 0.3 degrees C, P = 0.01 and systemic gain from 353 +/- 144 to 211 +/- 93 mL.min(-1).degrees C(-1), P = 0.02. Thus, dantrolene substantially decreased the gain of shivering, but produced little central thermoregulatory inhibition. IMPLICATIONS Dantrolene substantially decreases the gain of shivering but produces relatively little central thermoregulatory inhibition. It thus seems unlikely to prove more effective than conventional muscle relaxants for treatment of life-threatening hyperthermia.

Abstract
We tested the hypothesis that endogenous interleukin (IL)-10 limits the fever induced by a Gram-negative bacterial toxin (Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide, LPS) and a Gram-positive bacterial toxin (Staphylococcus aureus), when these toxins are injected into a subcutaneous air pouch (I.PO.) in rats. Injection of LPS or S. aureus caused fevers that were reduced in amplitude and duration by simultaneous administration of rat recombinant IL-10. The inhibition of fever by IL-10 was accompanied by a significant reduction in the toxin-evoked increases in concentrations of immunoreactive IL-6 at the site of inflammation and of IL-6 and IL-1 receptor antagonist in the circulation. Conversely, neutralisation of endogenous IL-10 in the pouch increased the amplitude and dramatically increased the duration of toxin-evoked fever, and augmented toxin-induced increases in pouch tumour necrosis factor-alpha, IL-1beta, and especially IL-6. Our data support a crucial regulatory role for endogenous IL-10 in limiting the fever responses during both Gram-negative and Gram-positive infections.

Abstract
Detection of two biogenic amine neurotransmitters, serotonin (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE) within the CA1 region of the hippocampus (HPC) of behaving male laboratory animals (Rattus norvegicus), was performed with miniature carbon sensors (BRODERICK PROBES) and in vivo semidifferential microvoltammetry after acute administration of the soluble immune factor, human recombinant, interleukin (IL) 1alpha (10 and 100 ng/kg i.p.). Two animal models were compared, i.e., (a) the Sprague-Dawley (SD) model, a strain neither biochemically nor immune-challenged and (b) the Fawn-Hooded (FH) model, a biochemically (5-HT-deficient) and immune-challenged animal. Open-field behaviors, locomotion (ambulations) and stereotypy (fine movements of sniffing and grooming) were monitored with infrared photobeams while 5-HT and NE were selectively and separately detected within seconds in real time. Subchronic studies were performed in the same animals 24 h later at which time no further drug was administered. Results from acute treatment studies showed that IL-1alpha altered HPC monoamines and behavior viz-a-viz habituation values (baseline) in the SD strain differently from those in the FH strain as follows: (1) although 5-HT release was significantly increased within CA1 region of HPC in both SD and FH strains (P<.0001), the extent of the HPC 5-HT increase in the 5-HT-deficient FH strain was significantly less than that of the SD strain at both doses (P<.0001). The subchronic studies showed that 5-HT release within the HPC in the SD strain significantly increased (135%) over drug treatment values (P<.001), whereas HPC 5-HT release in the FH strain remained the same as that seen in the acute drug treatment studies; the difference between strains for the subchronic study was also statistically significant (P<.01). (2) IL-1alpha significantly decreased HPC NE release in the SD strain (P<.0004) while IL-1alpha decreased HPC NE release in the FH strain only at the 10-ng/kg dose (P<.001); at the 100-ng/kg dose in the FH strain, NE rebounded towards baseline and increased 15% above baseline reaching statistical significance (P<.05). Subchronic studies in the SD strain showed a further decreased NE signal to 38% below baseline (P<.0001), whereas subchronic studies in the FH strain showed a significant increase in NE release (P<.02). The difference between strains in the subchronic NE studies was significant (P<.001). (3) Ambulations were increased after IL-1alpha administration in acute studies in both the SD and the FH strains, but the increase did not reach statistical significance, whereas in the subchronic studies, both strains exhibited significant increases as revealed by post hoc analyses (P<.05). There was a statistically significant difference between strains in acute studies (P<.001), whereas no significant differences between models were seen in ambulation behavior in subchronic studies. (4) Fine movements increased over baseline after IL-1alpha administration in both animal models in acute studies, however, results did not reach statistical significance, likely due to the episodic effect of IL-1alpha on movement behavior in both the SD and the FH strains. However, the SD strain showed a significant increase in fine movement behavior during the subchronic studies (P<.02). Significant differences in fine movements between animal models were not observed either acutely or in subchronic studies. In summary, the data show that immune modulation by IL-1alpha affects HPC neurochemistry and behavior in SD versus FH animal models differently and/or to different degrees. The data show that while the FH animal model is subsensitive to 5-HT agonists, 5-HT function can be stimulated. Comparison of genetically diverse animal models provides a reliable means to identify and discern cytokine-induced depressive versus stressor properties. Selective sensor technology provides a powerful tool as movement behavior is monitored and interpreted as a function of monoamine neurotransmission.

Abstract
Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induces fever that is mediated by pyrogenic cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1 beta. We hypothesized that the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 modulates the febrile response to LPS by suppressing the production of pyrogenic cytokines. In rats, intravenous but not intracerebroventricular infusion of IL-10 was found to attenuate fever induced by peripheral administration of LPS (10 microg/kg iv). IL-10 also suppressed LPS-induced IL-1 beta production in peripheral tissues and in the brain stem. In contrast, central administration of IL-10 attenuated the febrile response to central LPS (60 ng/rat icv) and decreased IL-1 beta production in the hypothalamus and brain stem but not in peripheral tissues and plasma. Furthermore, intravenous LPS upregulated expression of IL-10 receptor (IL-10R1) mRNA in the liver, whereas intracerebroventricular LPS enhanced IL-10R1 mRNA in the hypothalamus. We conclude that IL-10 modulates the febrile response by acting in the periphery or in the brain dependent on the primary site of inflammation and that its mechanism of action most likely involves inhibition of local IL-1 beta production.

Abstract
Fever is defined as a regulated rise in body temperature. The regulation of this phenomenon is accomplished by the actions of two types of endogenous cytokines, some functioning as pyrogens and others as antipyretics. Previous data obtained with the use of traditional pharmacological techniques, such as the injection of neutralizing antibodies, implicate interleukin (IL)-1 and IL-6 as endogenous pyrogens or inducers of fever. In almost all instances in which the endogenous actions of IL-1 or IL-6 are antagonized, fevers are attenuated. Other cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and IL-10, are thought to act as endogenous antipyretics or inhibitors of fever. In several studies, the inhibition of TNF action has enhanced fever. Recently, mice genetically engineered to lack cytokines or their receptors in all tissues of the body have been used to examine the regulation of IL-1, IL-6, TNF, and IL-10 on fever. Data obtained with these mice shed new light on our understanding of cytokine interactions in fever and, in some instances, contradict data obtained with pharmacological methods. This review summarizes the responses of cytokine and cytokine receptor knockout mice to fevers induced by lipopolysaccharide, turpentine, and sepsis.

Abstract
Intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of HIV-1 glycoprotein 120 (gp120), the envelope protein used by the virus to gain access into immune cells, induces neurobehavioral alterations in rats. To examine the role of proinflammatory cytokines in mediating these effects, we measured the effects of gp120 on brain proinflammatory cytokine expression and the effects of anti-inflammatory agents, including interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra), pentoxifylline (a TNFalpha synthesis blocker) and IL-10, on gp120-induced sickness behavior. I.c.v. administration of gp120 induced the expression of IL-1beta, but not TNFalpha, mRNA in the hypothalamus, 3 h after the injection. Pretreatment of rats with IL-1ra, but not with pentoxifylline, significantly attenuated gp120-induced anorexia and loss in body weight, whereas both agents had no effect on gp120-induced reduction in locomotor activity in the open field. Pretreatment with either IL-1ra and pentoxifylline simultaneously, or with IL-10, produced effects that were similar to the effects of IL-1ra alone. Together, these findings indicate that IL-1, but not TNFalpha, mediates some of the behavioral effects of acute gp120 administration, suggesting that brain IL-1 may be involved in some of the neurobehavioral abnormalities evident in AIDS patients.

Abstract
In male Sprague-Dawley rats intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (0.25, 0.50 and 1 mg/kg) increased anxiety levels. This effect was reversed by a prior, concomitant, and subsequent i.p. treatment with melatonin (4 and 6 mg/kg). As the effects of melatonin upon the actions induced by lipopolysaccharide were reversed by the melatonin receptor antagonist luzindole (30 and 60 mg/kg, i.p.), we argued that they are, but not only, melatonin receptor mediated. These findings, in accordance with our previous works, suggest that melatonin could be useful in the treatment of sickness behaviour associated with systemic infection diseases or as adjuvant in the anti-anxiety therapy.

Abstract
In 24 h water and food deprived rats, a single lipopolysaccharide treatment (0.25, 0.50 and 1 mg/kg, i.p.) induced inhibition of thirst and hunger as well as fever. Moreover, the same treatment increased serum cytokines, plasma nitrite/nitrate and corticosterone and urinary prostaglandin levels. In another group of 24 h water and food deprived rats, a repeated lipopolysaccharide treatment (0.25, 0. 50 and 1 mg/kg, i.p.), given at 0, 2, 6, 12 and 24 h, induced tolerance to inhibition of food intake and fever, but not to antidipsogenic effect. Moreover, the same repeated treatment stopped the increase in serum cytokines, plasma corticosterone and urinary prostaglandin concentrations and failed to reduce plasma nitrite/nitrate levels. This data, together with the evidence that a pretreatment with N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride (L-NAME) (5 and 10 microg per rat) reverses the antidipsogenic effects in lipopolysaccharide tolerant rats, suggests that the persistent reduction of water intake after a repeated lipopolysaccharide treatment is due to the antidipsogenic action of nitric oxide in the brain.

Fever is the hallmark of the stereotyped host response to microbial infection, although it is just one of a number of high-risk strategies employed by the infected host to clear itself of invading pathogens. The febrile response is accompanied by activation of multiple endogenous antipyretic systems that serve to suppress its magnitude or duration. These include neuroactive substances of neural and humoral origin, some of which (e.g., glucocorticoids, melanocortins, and IL-10) have broad-ranging anti-inflammatory actions. Glucocorticoids, vasopressin, and melanocortins appear to exert their antipyretic effects by acting on receptors within the brain, but beyond this the mechanisms involved are unknown. It is hypothesized, but not proven, that endogenous antipyretic systems protect the host against the destructive consequences of unchecked fever. Importantly, pharmacological blockade of the actions of endogenous antipyretic systems increases fevers of even low to moderate intensity. Therefore, in addition to protecting against catastrophic consequences of high fever, endogenous antipyretic systems seem to play a fundamental physiological role in determining the normal course of fever. Elucidating the neural and biochemical mechanisms involved in suppression of fever by physiological antipyretic systems will yield a rich benefit, both by advancing the basic understanding of host defense strategies, and by permitting the design of novel antipyretic and anti-inflammatory strategies for therapeutic intervention in human disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Manifestation of intraoperative fever is impaired by volatile anesthetics and muscle relaxants. Opioids are common anesthetic adjuvants and remain the dominant treatment for postoperative surgical pain and sedation of critically ill patients. The effect of opioids on normal thermoregulatory control is well established. However, the extent to which these drugs might inhibit fever remains unknown. Accordingly, we tested the hypothesis that relatively low plasma concentrations of the mu-receptor agonist alfentanil reduce fever magnitude. DESIGN Prospective, randomized, crossover study. SETTING Outcomes Research Laboratory, at the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, University of California, San Francisco. PATIENTS Eight healthy male volunteers, aged 25-31 yrs, each studied on three separate days. INTERVENTION Each volunteer was given an intravenous injection of 30 IU/g interleukin (IL)-2, followed 2 hrs later by 70 IU/g. One hour after the second dose, the volunteers were randomly assigned to three doses of alfentanil: a) none (control); b) a target plasma concentration of 100 ng/mL; and c) a target concentration of 200 ng/mL. Opioid administration continued for 5 hrs. METHODS AND MAIN RESULTS Alfentanil significantly reduced the febrile response to pyrogen, decreasing integrated tympanic membrane temperatures from 7.5+/-2.2 degrees C x hr on the control day, to 4.9+/-1.5 degrees C x hr with 100 ng/mL alfentanil, and to 5.1+/-1.7 degrees C x hr with 200 ng/mL alfentanil (p = .011). Peak temperatures were also significantly reduced from 38.5+/-0.4 degrees C on the control day, to 38.0+/-0.4 degrees C on the 100 ng/mL-alfentanil day and 38.0+/-0.6 degrees C on the 200-ng/mL day (p = .019). Plasma cytokine concentrations increased after IL-2 administration, roughly in proportion to the elevation in core temperature. However, cytokine concentrations did not differ significantly among the treatment groups. CONCLUSION Alfentanil significantly reduced the febrile response to IL-2 administration. However, the reduction was comparable at plasma concentrations near 100 and 200 ng/mL. These data indicate that concentrations of opioids commonly observed in critical care patients significantly inhibit the manifestation of fever.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine if interleukin (IL)-10 inhibits lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced IL-6 production in microglia by inhibiting activation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB). N13 microglia (a murine microglial cell line) and primary microglia from neonatal mice were cultured in the presence or absence of LPS and increasing amounts of murine IL-10 for 24 h. As predicted, LPS treatment increased supernatant IL-6 concentration in both N13 and primary microglia cultures. Pretreatment with IL-10, however, decreased LPS-induced IL-6 secretion in a dose-dependent manner in both culture systems. Likewise, ribonuclease protection assays showed that LPS increased steady-state IL-6 mRNA levels, but that pretreatment with IL-10 blocked the LPS-induced increase in IL-6 mRNA. Because NF-kappaB is the predominant transcription factor responsible for IL-6 transcription in response to inflammatory stimuli, it was hypothesized that IL-10 inhibited IL-6 production by preventing nuclear translocation of NF-kappaB. Consistent with this idea, LPS increased nuclear translocation of NF-kappaB as assessed by gel mobility shift assay. Supershift assays and immunocytochemical staining showed that both the p50 and p65 subunits of NF-kappaB translocated from the cytoplasm to the nucleus upon LPS stimulation. Pretreatment with IL-10, however, inhibited LPS-induced activation of NF-kappaB. Furthermore, inhibition of NF-kappaB activity with tosyl-Phe-chloromethlyketone (a serine protease inhibitor that prevents degradation of the NF-kappaB-IkappaB complex), completely blocked LPS-induced IL-6 production. These data suggest that IL-10 inhibited IL-6 production in microglia by decreasing the activity of NF-kappaB and, therefore, extend what little is known of the intricate relationship between anti-inflammatory and inflammatory cytokines in the central nervous system.

Abstract
Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and cholecystokinin (CCK) have been shown to have anorectic properties in a variety of species. The present study examined the effects of LPS and CCK, both alone and in combination, on two different aspects of water ingestion, water intake and palatability. On test days, animals were first injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) with either LPS (200 microg/kg) or NaCl vehicle, and 2 h later received a second injection of either CCK (8 microg/kg) or NaCl vehicle. In Experiment 1, water intake was monitored for 1 h on 3 separate test days 72 h apart; while in Experiment 2, water palatability was assessed using the taste reactivity test (TRT), on two separate test days 72 h apart. Both LPS and CCK significantly (p<0.05) reduced water intake, with the effects of combined LPS with CCK being more pronounced than either agent injected alone. Rats developed a rapid tolerance to the effects of LPS on water intake on subsequent exposures to LPS. Results from the TRT indicated that LPS enhanced water palatability (p<0.05), as evidenced by a high level of ingestive responding, whereas CCK produced a pattern of responding indicative of satiety. LPS plus CCK reduced ingestive responding on the first test day, but these responses were significantly increased on the second test day (p<0.05). These results demonstrate that although LPS reduces water intake, it enhances water palatability. The results further underscore the necessity for examining palatability changes in addition to intake measures when studying the regulation of feeding and drinking.

Abstract
The differential effects of CCK and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on sucrose intake and palatability were examined. Rats were injected with LPS (200 microg/kg ip) or NaCl (0.9%, vehicle) and 2 h later received a second injection of either CCK (8 microg/kg ip) or NaCl. In experiment 1, sucrose (0.3 M) intake was monitored for 1 h on three different test days 72 h apart, while in experiment 2, palatability was assessed by means of the taste reactivity test (TRT) on two separate days (72 h apart). In the TRT, orofacial and somatic responses to brief (30 s) intraoral infusions of sucrose were recorded and analyzed for response frequency. Singly, LPS and CCK reduced sucrose intake, with a more pronounced effect from combined LPS and CCK. LPS by itself did not alter sucrose palatability, as evidenced by continuous high levels of ingestive responding. In contrast, CCK-treated rats displayed a pattern of responding indicative of satiety, as did the combined LPS-CCK-treated rats. These results suggest that LPS does not induce hypophagia by altering palatability.

Abstract
Peripheral (i.p.) and central (i.c.v.) injections of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) have been shown to induce brain expression of proinflammatory cytokines and to depress social behaviour in rats, increase duration of immobility and induce body weight loss. To determine if the anti-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin-10 (IL-10) is able to modulate these effects, recombinant rat IL-10 was injected in the lateral ventricle of the brain (30, 100, 300 ng/rat) prior to i.p. or i.c.v. injection of LPS (250 micrograms/kg or 60 ng/rat, respectively). Social exploration was depressed for 6 h after i.p. LPS injection. This effect was attenuated by IL-10 (30 and 100 ng) 2 h after injection, whereas the highest dose of IL-10 blocked the depression of social interaction for 6 h after LPS injection. IL-10 produced the same effects on the increase of immobility although the results did not reach significance. Social exploration was depressed 3 h after i.c.v. LPS injection, and this was accompanied by increased immobility. These effects were totally blocked by i.c.v. IL-10 (300 ng/rat). Rats lost body weight after i.c.v. LPS, and this effect was attenuated by i.c.v. IL-10. These results indicate that IL-10 is able to modulate the production and/or action of central proinflammatory cytokines.

Abstract
In 24-h water- and food-deprived rats, we have evaluated the effects of cromoglycate sodium salt, an inhibitor of the mast cell degranulation with anti-inflammatory and membrane-stabilizating activity, on the central effects induced by Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of LPS (0.25, 0.50 and 1 mg/kg) induced a dose-dependent inhibition of water and food intake, fever, reduction in locomotor activity as well as increased anxiety levels. All these LPS effects were antagonized by a prior intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of cromoglycate sodium salt (100, 150 and 200 microg/rat). Our findings suggest that peripheral LPS administration may activate brain mast cells and indicate an involvement of these cells in brain pathophysiology.

Abstract
Interleukin (IL)-10 inhibits the synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines implicated in fever, including IL-1beta, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha. We hypothesized that IL-10 functions as an antipyretic in the regulation of fevers to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and turpentine. Body temperature was measured by biotelemetry. Swiss Webster (SW) mice treated with recombinant murine IL-10 were resistant to fever induced by a low dose of LPS (100 microgram/kg ip) and to the hypothermic and febrile effects of a high (septiclike) dose of LPS (2.5 mg/kg ip). IL-10 knockout mice developed an exacerbated and prolonged fever in response to a low dose of LPS (50 microgram/kg ip) compared with their wild-type counterparts. At 4 h after injection of the low dose of LPS, plasma levels of IL-6, but not TNF-alpha, were significantly elevated in the IL-10 knockout mice compared with their wild-type controls (ANOVA, P < 0.05). After injection of the same high dose of LPS injected into SW mice, wild-type mice developed a fever at 24 h whereas IL-10 knockout mice immediately developed a profound hypothermia that lasted through 41 h (ANOVA, P < 0.05). Body weight and food intake were more significantly depressed in response to the high dose of LPS in the knockout mice compared with their wild-type controls. Only 30% of the IL-10 knockout mice survived compared with 100% of the wild-type mice (Fisher's exact test, P < 0.05). Fever in response to the injection of turpentine (100 microliter/mouse sc) did not differ between wild-type and IL-10 knockout mice. These data support the hypotheses that 1) IL-10 functions as an endogenous antipyretic following exposure to LPS, 2) a putative mechanism of the early antipyretic action of IL-10 is through the inhibition of plasma levels of IL-6, 3) IL-10 has a protective role in the lethal effects of exposure to high levels of LPS, and 4) endogenous IL-10 does not have a role in fever induced by turpentine.
