Unveiling the photocatalytic marvels: Recent advances in solar heterojunctions for environmental remediation and energy harvesting

In the quest for effective solutions to address Environ. Pollut. and meet the escalating energy demands, heterojunction photocatalysts have emerged as a captivating and versatile technology. These photocatalysts have garnered significant interest due to their wide-ranging applications, including wastewater treatment, air purification, CO2 capture, and hydrogen generation via water splitting. This technique harnesses the power of semiconductors, which are activated under light illumination, providing the necessary energy for catalytic reactions. With visible light constituting a substantial portion (46%) of the solar spectrum, the development of visible-light-driven semiconductors has become imperative. Heterojunction photocatalysts offer a promising strategy to overcome the limitations associated with activating semiconductors under visible light. In this comprehensive review, we present the recent advancements in the field of photocatalytic degradation of contaminants across diverse media, as well as the remarkable progress made in renewable energy production. Moreover, we delve into the crucial role played by various operating parameters in influencing the photocatalytic performance of heterojunction systems. Finally, we address emerging challenges and propose novel perspectives to provide valuable insights for future advancements in this dynamic research domain. By unraveling the potential of heterojunction photocatalysts, this review contributes to the broader understanding of their applications and paves the way for exciting avenues of exploration and innovation.

Construction of a novel S-scheme AgVO3/CaIn2S4 heterostructure for efficient photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Constructing an S-scheme system with highly active catalysts is a significant approach for improving the separation of photoinduced carriers to solve the related environmental aggravation. In this study, a well-designed S-scheme AgVO3/CaIn2S4 photocatalyst was synthesized for water purification by in situ growing CaIn2S4 nanocrystals on AgVO3 nanorod surfaces. The optimized AgVO3/CaIn2S4 heterostructure demonstrates an enhanced photocatalytic efficiency (94.1%) toward tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation compared with bare AgVO3 (42.6%) and CaIn2S4 (81.6%). The significant enhancement of photocatalytic activity is attributed to the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism in the AgVO3/CaIn2S4 heterostructure, which effectively directs photogenerated charge migration, boosts charge transfer, and preserves the high redox capacity of photoexcited electrons and holes on different active sites. This study is expected to offer insights into strategically designing and preparing S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts to improve water purification.

Photocatalytic systems: reactions, mechanism, and applications

The photocatalytic field revolves around the utilization of photon energy to initiate various chemical reactions using non-adsorbing substrates, through processes such as single electron transfer, energy transfer, or atom transfer. The efficiency of this field depends on the capacity of a light-absorbing metal complex, organic molecule, or substance (commonly referred to as photocatalysts or PCs) to execute these processes. Photoredox techniques utilize photocatalysts, which possess the essential characteristic of functioning as both an oxidizing and a reducing agent upon activation. In addition, it is commonly observed that photocatalysts exhibit optimal performance when irradiated with low-energy light sources, while still retaining their catalytic activity under ambient temperatures. The implementation of photoredox catalysis has resuscitated an array of synthesis realms, including but not limited to radical chemistry and photochemistry, ultimately affording prospects for the development of the reactions. Also, photoredox catalysis is utilized to resolve numerous challenges encountered in medicinal chemistry, as well as natural product synthesis. Moreover, its applications extend across diverse domains encompassing organic chemistry and catalysis. The significance of photoredox catalysts is rooted in their utilization across various fields, including biomedicine, environmental pollution management, and water purification. Of course, recently, research has evaluated photocatalysts in terms of cost, recyclability, and pollution of some photocatalysts and dyes from an environmental point of view. According to these new studies, there is a need for critical studies and reviews on photocatalysts and photocatalytic processes to provide a solution to reduce these limitations. As a future perspective for research on photocatalysts, it is necessary to put the goals of researchers on studies to overcome the limitations of the application and efficiency of photocatalysts to promote their use on a large scale for the development of industrial activities. Given the significant implications of the subject matter, this review seeks to delve into the fundamental tenets of the photocatalyst domain and its associated practical use cases. This review endeavors to demonstrate the prospective of a powerful tool known as photochemical catalysis and elucidate its underlying tenets. Additionally, another goal of this review is to expound upon the various applications of photocatalysts.

Light-driven photocatalysis as an effective tool for degradation of antibiotics

Antibiotic contamination has become a severe issue and a dangerous concern to the environment because of large release of antibiotic effluent into terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. To try and solve these issues, a plethora of research on antibiotic withdrawal has been carried out. Recently photocatalysis has received tremendous attention due to its ability to remove antibiotics from aqueous solutions in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner with few drawbacks compared to traditional photocatalysts. Considerable attention has been focused on developing advanced visible light-driven photocatalysts in order to address these problems. This review provides an overview of recent developments in the field of photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics, including the doping of metals and non-metals into ultraviolet light-driven photocatalysts, the formation of new semiconductor photocatalysts, the advancement of heterojunction photocatalysts, and the building of surface plasmon resonance-enhanced photocatalytic systems.

Prediction of g-C3N4-based photocatalysts in tetracycline degradation based on machine learning

Investigating the effects of g-C3N4-based photocatalysts on experimental parameters during tetracycline (TC) degradation can be helpful in discovering the optimal parameter combinations to improve the degradation efficiencies in general. Machine learning methods can avoid the problems of high cost, time-consuming and possible instrumental errors in experimental methods, which have been proven to be an effective alternative for evaluating the entire experimental process. Eight typical machine learning models were explored for their effectiveness in predicting the TC degradation efficiencies of g-C3N4 based photocatalysts. XGBoost (XGB) was the most reliable model with R2, RMSE and MAE values of 0.985, 4.167 and 2.900, respectively. In addition, XGB's feature importance and SHAP method were used to rank the importance of features to provide interpretability to the results. This study provided a new idea for developing g-C3N4-based photocatalysts for TC degradation and intelligent algorithms for predicting the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4-based photocatalysts.

High-performance Ag-TiO2 nanoparticle composite catalyst synthesized by pulsed laser ablation in liquid: properties, mechanism and preparation studies

Precious metal doping can effectively improves the catalytic performance of TiO2. In this study, pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) is employed to integrate preparation with doping and control composite nanoparticle products by adjusting the laser action time to synthesise Ag-TiO2 composite nanoparticles with high catalytic performance. The generation and evolution of Ag-TiO2 nanoparticles are investigated by analysing particle size, microscopic morphology, crystalline phase, and other characteristics. The generation and doped-morphology evolution of composite nanoparticles are simulated based on thermodynamics, and the optimisation of Ag-doped structure on the composite nanomaterials is investigated based on density functional theory. The effect of Ag-TiO2 structural properties on its performance is examined under different catalytic conditions to determine optimal degradation conditions. In this study, the effect of laser ablation time on the doped structure during PLAL is analysed, which is of further research significance in exploring the structural evolution law of laser and composite nanoparticles, multi-variate catalytic performance testing, reduction of photogenerated carrier complexation rate, and expansion of its spectral absorption range, thereby providing the basis for practical production.

3D/3D Bamboo Charcoal/Bi2WO6 Bifunctional Photocatalyst for Degradation of Organic Pollutants and Efficient H2 Evolution Coupling with Furfuryl Alcohols Oxidation

Photocatalysis is one of the most promising pathways to relieve the environmental contamination caused by the rapid development of modern technology. In this work, we demonstrate a green manufacturing process for the 3D/3D rod-shaped bamboo charcoal/Bi2WO6 photocatalyst (210BC-BWO) by controlled carbonization temperature. A series of morphology characterization and properties investigations (XRD, SEM, UV-vis DRS, transient photocurrent response, N2 absorption-desorption isotherms) indicate a 210BC-BWO photocatalyst with higher charge separation efficiency, larger surface area, and better adsorption capacity. The excellent photocatalytic performance was evaluated by degrading rhodamine B (RhB) (98.5%), tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) (77.1%), and H2 evolution (2833 μmol·g-1·h-1) coupled with furfuryl alcohol oxidation (3097 μmol·g-1·h-1) under visible light irradiation. In addition, the possible mechanisms for degradation of organic pollutants, H2 evolution, and furfuryl alcohol oxidation were schematically investigated, which make it possible to exert photocatalysis by increasing the active radical. This study shows that the combination of bamboo charcoal and bismuth tungstate can be a powerful photocatalyst that rationally combines H2 evolution coupled with furfuryl alcohol oxidation and degradation of pollutants.

Investigation of the photocatalytic activity of magnetically recoverable g-C3N4/CoFe2O4/Bi2MoO6 particles for purifying tetracycline antibiotics: synthesis, characterization, ecotoxicity analysis, and plant toxicity test

To purify water polluted by tetracycline antibiotics, a new visible light-driven magnetically recoverable photocatalyst, g-C3N4/CoFe2O4/Bi2MoO6, was prepared in this study, and it effectively removed tetracycline antibiotics. Its rapid recycling was achieved by external magnets, which greatly increased material utilization. After four repeated uses, the degradation rate of tetracycline antibiotics by the g-C3N4/CoFe2O4/Bi2MoO6 composite photocatalyst remained at a high level, and the magnetic separation performance remained stable. Subsequently, it was further discovered that the degradation mechanism of this photocatalytic system was consistent with a double Z-type mechanism, which enabled two transport channels for photogenerated electrons, and was favorable for the separation of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs and prolonged the lifetime of the photogenerated carriers. The active substances playing an important role in the photocatalytic system were ˙O2- and h+. In addition, the possible intermediates in the photocatalytic process were detected by GC-MS analysis, and a degradation mechanism was proposed. The ecotoxicity of the degradation products and intermediates was evaluated using the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (TEST), and the mung bean seed cultivation test was carried out to visually and efficiently illustrate that the g-C3N4/CoFe2O4/Bi2MoO6 photocatalyst can effectively degrade antibiotics, with low ecotoxicity of the degradation products. This provides a new idea for the removal of organic pollutants using light energy.

Exploring the Synergistic Mechanisms of Nanopulsed Plasma Bubbles and Photocatalysts for Trimethoprim Degradation and Mineralization in Water

In this study, the synergetic action of nanopulsed plasma bubbles (PBs) and photocatalysts for the degradation/mineralization of trimethoprim (TMP) in water was investigated. The effects of ZnO or TiO2 loading, plasma gas, and initial TMP concentration were evaluated. The physicochemical characterization of plasma-treated water, the quantification of plasma species, and the use of appropriate plasma species scavengers shed light on the plasma-catalytic mechanism. ZnO proved to be a superior catalyst compared to TiO2 when combined with plasma bubbles, mainly due to the increased production of ⋅OH and oxygen species resulting from the decomposition of O3. The air-PBs + ZnO system resulted in higher TMP degradation (i.e., 95% after 5 min of treatment) compared to the air-PBs + TiO2 system (i.e., 87%) and the PBs-alone process (83%). The plasma gas strongly influenced the process, with O2 resulting in the best performance and Ar being insufficient to drive the process. The synergy between air-PBs and ZnO was more profound (SF = 1.7), while ZnO also promoted the already high O2-plasma bubbles' performance, resulting in a high TOC removal rate (i.e., 71%). The electrical energy per order in the PBs + ZnO system was very low, ranging from 0.23 to 0.46 kWh/m3, depending on the plasma gas and initial TMP concentration. The study provides valuable insights into the rapid and cost-effective degradation of emerging contaminants like TMP and the plasma-catalytic mechanism of antibiotics.

CdS QDs grown on ellipsoidal BiVO4 for efficient photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline

Designing efficient, inexpensive, and stable photocatalysts to degrade organic pollutants and antibiotics has become an effective way for environmental remediation. In this work, we successfully performed in situ growth of CdS QDs on the surface of elliptical BiVO4 to try to show the advantage of the binary heterojuncted photocatalyst (BVO@CdS) for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC). The In situ growth of CdS QDs can provide a large number of reactive sites and also generate a larger contact area with BiVO4. In addition, compared with mechanical composite materials, in situ growth can significantly reduce the energy barrier at the interface between BiVO4 and CdS, providing more channels for the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers, and further improving reaction activity. As a result, BVO@CdS-0.05 shows the best degradation efficiency, with a degradation rate of 88% after 30 min under visible light. The TC photodegradation follows a pseudo-second-order reaction with a dynamic constant of 0.472 min-1, which is 6.47 times that of pure BiVO4, 7.24 times that of pure CdS QDs and 2 times that of the mechanical composite. The degradation rate of BVO@CdS-0.05 decreases to 77.8% with a retention rate of 88.5% after four cycles, demonstrating excellent stability. Through liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis, two possible pathways for TC degradation are proposed. Through free radical capture experiments, electron spin resonance measurements, and photoelectrochemical comprehensive analysis, it is confirmed that BVO@CdS composites have constructed an efficient Z-scheme heterojunction via in situ growth, thereby highly enhancing the separation and transport efficiency of charge carriers.

Biological Renewable Cellulose-Templated Zn1-XCuXO/Ag2O Nanocomposite Photocatalysts for the Degradation of Methylene Blue

Herein, Cellulose-templated Zn1-XCuXO/Ag2O nanocomposites were prepared using biological renewable cellulose extracted from water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). Cellulose-templated Cu-doped ZnO catalysts with different amounts of Cu as the dopants (1, 2, 3, and 4%) were prepared and denoted CZ-1, CZ-2, CZ-3, and CZ-4, respectively, for simplicity. The prepared catalysts were tested for the degradation of methylene blue (MB), and 2% Cu-doped ZnO (CZ-2) showed the best catalytic performance (82%), while the pure ZnO, CZ-1, CZ-3, and CZ-4 catalysts exhibited MB dye degradation efficiencies of 54, 63, 65, and 60%, respectively. The best catalyst (CZ-2) was chosen to further improve the degradation efficiency. Different amounts of AgNO3 (10, 15, 30, and 45 mg) were used for the deposition of Ag2O on the surface of CZ-2 and denoted CZA-10, CZA-15, CZA-30, and CZA-45, respectively. Among the composite catalysts, CZA-15 showed remarkable degradation efficiency and degraded 94% of MB, while the CZA-10, CZA-30, and CZA-45 catalysts showed 90, 81, and 79% degradation efficiencies, respectively, under visible light within 100 min of irradiation. The enhanced catalytic performance could be due to the smaller particle size, the higher electron and hole separation and charge transfer efficiencies, and the lower agglomeration in the composite catalyst system. The results also demonstrated that the Cu-doped ZnO prepared with cellulose as a template, followed by the optimum amount of Ag2O deposition, could have promising applications in the degradation of organic pollutants.

Research Progress of Ozone/Peroxymonosulfate Advanced Oxidation Technology for Degrading Antibiotics in Drinking Water and Wastewater Effluent: A Review

Nowadays, antibiotics are widely used, increasing the risk of contamination of the water body and further threatening human health. The traditional water treatment process is less efficient in degrading antibiotics, and the advanced oxidation process (AOPs) is cleaner and more efficient than the traditional biochemical degradation process. The combined ozone/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) advanced oxidation process (O3/PMS) based on sulfate radical (SO4•-) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) has developed rapidly in recent years. The O3/PMS process has become one of the most effective ways to treat antibiotic wastewater. The reaction mechanism of O3/PMS was reviewed in this paper, and the research and application progress of the O3/PMS process in the degradation of antibiotics in drinking water and wastewater effluent were evaluated. The operation characteristics and current application range of the process were summarized, which has a certain reference value for further research on O3/PMS process.

Cu2O/WO3 S-scheme heterojunctions for photocatalytic degradation of levofloxacin based on coordination activation

Heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation of antibiotic involves the activation of antibiotic molecules and the photocatalytic oxidation process. However, the simultaneous improvement of these processes is still a challenge. Herein, S-scheme heterojunctions consisted of Cu2O nanocluster with defective WO3 nanosheets were constructed for efficient photocatalytic degradation of levofloxacin (LVX). The typical CNS-5 composite (5 wt% Cu2O/WO3) achieves an optimal LVX degradation efficiency of 97.9% within 80 min. The spatial charge separation and enhancement of redox capacity were realized by the formation of S-scheme heterojunction between Cu2O and WO3. Moreover, their interfacial interaction would lead to the loss of lattice oxygen and the generation of W5+ sites. It is witnessed that the C-N of piperazine ring and CO of carboxylic acid in LVX are coordinated with W5+ sites to build the electronic bridge to activate LVX, greatly promoting the further degradation. This work highlights the important role of selective coordination activation cooperated with S-type heterojunctions for the photocatalytic degradation and offers a new view to understand the degradation of antibiotics at molecular level.

Construction of novel Ag/AgI/Bi4Ti3O12 plasmonic heterojunction: A study focusing on the performance and mechanism of photocatalytic removal of tetracycline

As a result of the insufficient absorption of visible light, the application of Bi4Ti3O12 in the field of photocatalysis is limited. Ag/AgI was uniformly modified on the surface of the nanoflower bulb of Bi4Ti3O12 by simple precipitation method and photodeposition. The fabricated Ag/AgI/Bi4Ti3O12 obtained an ultra-high tetracycline (TC) removal rate under visible light irradiation. And the synergetic effects caused by the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag, the photosensitivity of AgI and the p-n heterojunction are the key to improving the photocatalytic performance of materials. Besides, four plausible photodegradation pathways of TC were proposed and its intermediates were evaluated for toxicity, showing a significant decrease in toxicity after photoreaction.

Charge transfer in TiO2-based photocatalysis: fundamental mechanisms to material strategies

Semiconductor-based photocatalysis has attracted significant interest due to its capacity to directly exploit solar energy and generate solar fuels, including water splitting, CO2 reduction, pollutant degradation, and bacterial inactivation. However, achieving the maximum efficiency in photocatalytic processes remains a challenge owing to the speedy recombination of electron-hole pairs and the limited use of light. Therefore, significant endeavours have been devoted to addressing these issues. Specifically, well-designed heterojunction photocatalysts have been demonstrated to exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity through the physical distancing of electron-hole pairs generated during the photocatalytic process. In this review, we provide a systematic discussion ranging from fundamental mechanisms to material strategies, focusing on TiO2-based heterojunction photocatalysts. Current efforts are focused on developing heterojunction photocatalysts based on TiO2 for a variety of photocatalytic applications, and these projects are explained and assessed. Finally, we offer a concise summary of the main insights and challenges in the utilization of TiO2-based heterojunction photocatalysts for photocatalysis. We expect that this review will serve as a valuable resource to improve the efficiency of TiO2-based heterojunctions for energy generation and environmental remediation.

Carbon-Supported Nanocomposite Synthesis, Characterization, and Application as an Efficient Adsorbent for Ciprofloxacin and Amoxicillin

The existence of antibiotics in the environment has recently raised serious concerns about their possible hazards to human health and the water ecosystem. In the current study, an activated carbon-supported nanocomposite, AC-CoFe2O3, was synthesized by a coprecipitation method, characterized, and then applied to adsorb different drugs from water. The synthesized composites were characterized by using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller plots, and scanning electron microscopy. The adsorption of both Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) and Amoxicillin (Amoxi) antibiotics on the composite followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.9981 and 0.9974 mg g-1 min-1, respectively). Langmuir isotherm was the best-fit model showing 312.17 and 217.76 mg g-1 adsorption capacities for Ciprofloxacin and Amoxicillin, respectively, at 333 K. The negative Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) specified the spontaneity of the method. The positive change in the enthalpy (ΔH) indicated that the adsorption process was assisted by higher temperatures. The different optimized parameters were pH, contact time, adsorbent weight, concentration, and temperature. The maximum adsorption of Cipro was found to be 98.41% at pH 12, while for Amoxi, it was 89.09% at pH 2 at 333 K. The drugs were then successfully determined from natural water samples at optimized conditions using these nanocomposites.

Degradation characteristics of p-nitrophenol and atenolol by carbon nitride modified by graphene quantum dots

Photocatalysis is a promising technology for wastewater treatment. It is of great significance to find catalysts with high photoactivity. In this paper, a catalyst with high photocatalytic degradation efficiency to organic wastewater, carbon nitride modified by graphene quantum dots (SCN-GQDX), is prepared by supramolecular self-assembly thermal polycondensation method and doping graphene quantum dots (GQDs). The results show that SCN-GQD0.5 has the best catalytic performance, and its photocatalytic degradation efficiency to organic pollutants can reach 86% and still remains above 83% after five cycles, which shows the modified carbon nitride has high catalytic efficiency and stability. In a word, SCN-GQDX is a highly efficient, non-toxic and stable photocatalyst for organic pollutants in wastewater.

Synergistic Effect of Ion Doping and Type-II Heterojunction Construction and Ciprofloxacin Degradation by MIL-68(In,Bi)-NH2@BiOBr under Visible Light

Heterojunction structure and ion doping techniques are viable tactics in facilitating the generation and separation of photogenerated electrons and holes in photocatalysis. In the current study, a novel Bi ion-doped MIL-68(In,Bi)-NH2@BiOBr (MIBN@BOB) type-II heterojunction was first synthesized in a one-step solvothermal reaction. Doping of Bi ions not only broadened the light-sensing range but also provided reliable anchor sites for the in situ growth of BiOBr. Meanwhile, the heterostructure supplied new channels for photogenerated carriers, accelerating the transfer and inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole. The obtained MIBN@BOB exhibited enhanced photocatalytic performance (91.1%) than MIL-68(In)-NH2 (40.8%) and BiOBr (57.5%) in ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation under visible light, with excellent reusability. Photocatalysts were characterized in detail, and a series of photoelectrochemical tests were utilized to analyze the photoelectric properties. MIBN@BOB were deduced to conform the electron conduction mechanism of conventional type-II heterojunctions. More importantly, based on the above experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, BiOBr-Bi in MIBN@BOB can serve as the major active sites of CIP enrichment, and •O2- and 1O2 generated at the BiOBr interface can react with the adsorbed CIP directly. Lastly, the possible degradation products and pathways of CIP were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). This study provides a reference for the construction of ion-doping-modified metal-organic framework (MOF)-based heterojunction photocatalysts and their application in antibiotic removal.

A More Efficient Method for Preparing a MIP-CQDs/ZnO1-x Photodegradant with Highly Selective Adsorption and Photocatalytic Properties

The application of semiconductor photocatalysts in wastewater treatment always has a drawback, which is the lack of selectivity for pollutants, but molecular imprinting technology (MIT) is a remarkable method for preparing highly selective adsorbents for low concentration target pollutants. Up to now, the research of molecular imprinting materials has mainly focused on organic polymers, and there has been little research on inorganic molecular imprinting materials. In the present work, we introduced carbon quantum dots (CQDs) into the flower-like hierarchical ZnO to prepare photocatalysts CQDs/ZnO. Further, with ciprofloxacin (CIP) as the template molecule, a molecular imprinting material MIP-CQDs/ZnO1-x was prepared by introducing both oxygen vacancies and imprinted cavities into CQDs/ZnO by the hydrothermal calcination method. It can not only increase the concentration of oxygen vacancies and broaden the light absorption range of zinc oxide without changing the crystal form of ZnO but also make it have the characteristics of preferential adsorption and degradation of CIP during the degradation process. Under the synergistic effect of CQDs, oxygen vacancies, and molecularly imprinted cavities, the molecularly imprinted material exhibits excellent photocatalytic and selective adsorption performance.

The heart of our review is dedicated to a detailed analysis of the detrimental impacts of effluents on human health, underscoring the urgency of effective treatment methods. We dissected three key materials in the realm of piezo-photocatalysis: ZnO-based materials, BaTiO3-based materials, and bismuth-doped materials. Each material is scrutinized for its unique properties and applications in the removal of pollutants from wastewater, offering a comprehensive understanding of their potential to address this critical issue. Furthermore, our exploration extends to the realm of hydrogen production, where we discuss various types of hydrogen and the role of piezo-photocatalysis in generating clean and sustainable hydrogen. By illuminating the synergistic potential of these advanced materials and technologies, we pave the way for innovative solutions to the pressing challenges of water pollution and renewable energy production. This review article not only serves as a valuable resource for researchers and scholars in the fields of material science and environmental engineering but also underscores the pivotal role of interdisciplinary approaches in addressing complex global issues.

Recent developments on advanced oxidation processes for degradation of pollutants from wastewater with focus on antibiotics and organic dyes

The existence of various pollutants in water environment contributes to global pollution and poses significant threats to humans, wildlife, and other living beings. The emergence of an effective, realistic, cost-effective, and environmentally acceptable technique to treat wastewater generated from different sectors is critical for reducing pollutant accumulation in the environment. The electrochemical advanced oxidation method is a productive technology for treating hazardous effluents because of its potential benefits such as lack of secondary pollutant and high oxidation efficiency. Recent researches on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in the period of 2018-2022 are highlighted in this paper. This review emphasizes on recent advances in electro-oxidation (EO), ozone oxidation, sonolysis, radiation, electro-Fenton (EF), photolysis and photocatalysis targeted at treating pharmaceuticals, dyes and pesticides polluted effluents. In the first half of the review, the concept of the AOPs are discussed briefly. Later, the influence of increasing current density, pH, electrode, electrolyte and initial concentration of effluents on degradation are discussed. Lastly, previously reported designs of electrochemical reactors, as well as data on intermediates generated and energy consumption during the electro oxidation and Fenton processes are discussed. According to the literature study, the electro-oxidation technique is more appropriate for organic compounds, whilst the electro-Fenton technique appear to be more appropriate for more complex molecules.

Advanced oxidation/reduction processes (AO/RPs) for wastewater treatment, current challenges, and future perspectives: a review

Advanced oxidation/reduction processes (AO/RPs) are considered as effective water treatment technologies and thus could be used to solve the problem of water pollution. These technologies of wastewater treatment involve the production of highly reactive species such as •OH, H•, e-aq, SO4•-, and SO3•-. These radicals can attack the targeted contaminants present in aqueous media and result in their destruction. The efficiency of AO/RPs is highly affected by various operational parameters such as initial concentration of contaminant, solution pH, catalyst amount, intensity of light source, nature of oxidant and reductant used, and the presence of various ionic species in aquatic media. Among AO/RPs, the solar light-based AO/RPs are most widely used nowadays for contaminant removal from aqueous media because of their high environmental friendliness and cost effectiveness. By using these techniques, almost all types of pollutants can be easily removed from aquatic media within short intervals of time, and hence, the problem of water pollution can be solved effectively. This review focuses on various AO/RPs used for wastewater treatment. The effects of different operational parameters that affect the efficiency of these processes toward contaminant removal have been discussed. Besides, challenges and future recommendations are also briefly provided for the researchers in order to improve the efficiency of these processes.

Cu2+ coordination-induced in situ photo-to-heat on catalytic sites to hydrolyze β-lactam antibiotics pollutants in waters

For degradation of β-lactam antibiotics pollution in waters, the strained β-lactam ring is the most toxic and resistant moiety to biodegrade and redox-chemically treat among their functional groups. Hydrolytically opening β-lactam ring with Lewis acid catalysts has long been recognized as a shortcut, but at room temperature, such hydrolysis is too slow to be deployed. Here, we found when Cu2+ was immobilized on imine-linked COF (covalent organic framework) (Cu2+/Py-Bpy-COF, Cu2+ load is 1.43 wt%), as-prepared composite can utilize the light irradiation (wavelength range simulated sunlight) to in situ heat anchored Cu2+ Lewis acid sites through an excellent photothermal conversion to open the β-lactam ring followed by a desired full-decarboxylation of hydrolysates. Under 1 W/cm2 simulated sunlight, Cu2+/Py-Bpy-COF powders placed in a microfiltration membrane rapidly cause a temperature rising even to ~211.7 °C in 1 min. It can effectively hydrolyze common β-lactam antibiotics in waters and even antibiotics concentration is as high as 1 mM and it takes less than 10 min. Such photo-heating hydrolysis rate is ~24 times as high as under dark and ~2 times as high as Cu2+ homogenous catalysis. Our strategy significantly decreases the interference from generally coexisting common organics in waters and potential toxicity concerns of residual carboxyl groups in hydrolysates and opens up an accessible way for the settlement of β-lactam antibiotics pollutants by the only energy source available, the sunlight.

A swarm of helical photocatalysts with controlled catalytic inhibition and acceleration by magneto-optical stimuli

Highly persistent and toxic organic pollutants increasingly accumulate in freshwater resources, exacerbating the human water scarcity crisis. Developing novel microrobots with high catalytic performance, high mobility, and recycling capability integrated to harness energy from the surrounding environment to degrade pollutants effectively remains a challenge. Here, we report a kind of Spirulina (SP)-based magnetic photocatalytic microrobots with a substantially decreased band gap than that of pure photocatalysts, facilitating the generation of stable holes and electrons. Under sunlight irradiation, the degradation rate of rhodamine B (RhB) by the microrobots could be increased by 7.85 times compared with that of pure BiOCl, indicating its excellent photocatalytic performance. In addition, the microrobots can swarm in a highly controllable manner to the targeted regions and perform selective catalytic degradation of organic pollutants in specific areas by coupling effect of light and magnetic field. Importantly, the catalytic capability of the swarming microrobots can be activated by light stimulus whereas inhibited by magneto-optical stimuli, with a rate constant 2.15 times lower than that of pure light stimulation. The biohybrid and magneto-optical responsive microrobots offer a potential platform for selective pollutants catalysis at assigned regions in wastewater treatment plants.

Photocatalytic degradation performance of antibiotics by WO3/α-Fe2O3/zeolite type II heterojunction with core-shell structure

The accumulation of antibiotics in the environment can be harmful to human health, and research on their disposal technologies is of increasing interest. In this study, WO3/α-Fe2O3/zeolite (WFZ) type II heterojunction composites with core-shell structures were prepared by coupling WO3 semiconductors with visible-light photocatalytic activity with α-Fe2O3 via hydrothermal synthesis using zeolite as a carrier for the adsorption of synergistic photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics in wastewater. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), specific surface, and porosity measurements were used to characterize the structure of WFZ type II heterojunction. The performance of WFZ heterojunction for the visible photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics (tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and levofloxacin hydrochloride (LVF)) was investigated. Through four photocatalytic cycles, the catalyst exhibited excellent durability and stability. This was attributed to the core-shell structure and type II heterojunction promoting the effective separation of photogenerated carriers and the extended visible light response range, which resulted in the best photocatalytic activity of the catalyst under visible light irradiation. Radical trapping experiments showed that superoxide radicals (•O2-) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) were the main active species that played a major role in the photocatalytic degradation. These findings show that the synthesized WFZ type-II heterojunction can be used as a reliable visible-light-responsive photocatalyst for the treatment of antibiotics in wastewater.

Antibacterial Nanocellulose-TiO2/Polyester Fabric for the Recyclable Photocatalytic Degradation of Dyes

In this paper, we report an antibacterial, recyclable nanocellulose-titanium dioxide/polyester nonwoven fabric (NC-TiO2/PET) composite for the highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of dyes. The NC-TiO2 was loaded onto the surface of flexible PET nonwoven fabric through a simple swelling and dipping method. The NC-TiO2 in the particle size range of ~10 nm were uniformly attached to the surface of the PET fibers. The NC-TiO2/PET composite has the ability to achieve the stable photocatalytic degradation of dyes and presents antibacterial properties. The degradation rates to methylene blue (MB) and acid red (AR) of the NC-TiO2/PET composite reached 90.02% and 91.14%, respectively, and the inhibition rate of Escherichia coli was >95%. After several rounds of cyclic testing, the photocatalytic performance, antibacterial performance, and mechanical stability of the NC-TiO2/PET composite remained robust.

Facile aqueous synthesis and comparative evaluation of TiO2-semiconductor and TiO2-metal nanohybrid photocatalysts in antibiotics degradation under visible light

Advanced oxidation processes using TiO2-based nanomaterials are sustainable technologies that hold great promise for the degradation of many types of pollutants including pharmaceutical residues. A wide variety of heterostructures coupling TiO2 with visible-light active nanomaterials have been explored to shift its photocatalytic properties to harness sun irradiation but a systematic comparison between them is lacking in the current literature. Furthermore, the high number of proposed nanostructures with different size, morphology, and surface area, and the often complex synthesis processes hamper the transition of these materials into commercial and effective solutions for environmental remediation. Herein, we have designed a facile and cost-effective method to synthesize two heterostructured photocatalysts representative of two main families of novel structures proposed, hybrids of TiO2 with metal (Au) and semiconductor (CeO2) nanomaterials. The photocatalysts have been extensively characterized to ensure a good comparability in terms of co-catalyst doping characteristics, morphology and surface area. The photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole as target pollutants, two antibiotics of high concern polluting water sources, has been evaluated and CeO2/TiO2 exhibited the highest activity, achieving complete antibiotic degradation at very low photocatalyst concentrations. Our study provides new insights into the development of inexpensive heterostructured photocatalysts and suggests that the non-stoichiometry and characteristic d and f electronic orbital configuration of CeO2 have a significantly improved role in the enhancement of the photocatalytic reaction.

Degradation of Levofloxacin by a green zero-valent iron-loaded carbon composite activating peroxydisulfate system: Reactivity, products and mechanism

In this study, a green zero-valent iron-loaded carbon composite (ZVI-SCG) was synthesized using coffee grounds and FeCl3 solution through two-steps method, and the synthesized ZVI-SCG was used in the activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) to degrade Levofloxacin (LEX). Results revealed that ZVI-SCG exhibited a great potential for LEX removal by adsorption and catalytic degradation in the ZVI-SCG/PDS system, and 99% of LEX was removed in the ZVI-SCG/PDS system within 60 min. ZVI-SCG/PDS system showed a high reactivity toward LEX degradation under realistic environmental conditions. Also, the ZVI-SCG/PDS system could effectively degrade several quinolone antibiotics including gatifloxacin, ciprofloxacin and LEX in single and simultaneous removal modes. A potential reaction mechanism of LEX degradation by ZVI-SCG/PDS system was proposed, SO4•-, HO•, O2•- and 1O2 involved in radical and non-radical pathways took part in catalytic degradation of LEX by ZVI-SCG/PDS system, but HO• might be the main reactive species for LEX degradation. The possible degradation pathway of LEX was also proposed based on the identified ten intermediate products, LEX degradation was successfully achieved through decarboxylation, opening ring and hydroxylation processes. The potential toxicity of LEX and its oxidation products decreased significantly after treatment. This study provides a promising strategy of water treatment for the antibiotics-containing wastewater.

g-C3N4/Ag@AgCl with Z-scheme heterojunction and Ag electron bridge for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline wastewater

Building Z-scheme heterojunctions with an electron bridge is a favored function for increasing photocatalytic activity. A facile approach for preparing g-C3N4/Ag@AgCl ternary heterojunctions by co-precipitation and photoreduction was established in this work. First, via co-precipitation, AgCl was modified on the surface of g-C3N4 to create a broad contact area between AgCl and g-C3N4. The AgCl is then reduced to Ag via an in-situ photoreduction technique, resulting in the formation of a ternary composite. The experimental results showed that when g-C3N4 modified 25% of the Ag@AgCl, that is, g-C3N4/Ag@AgCl-25 had the best photocatalytic performance, 94.9% of TC was degraded within 240 min, and the reaction rate to TC was 0.1214 min-1, which was 4.49 times and 8.12 times higher than that of g-C3N4 and Ag/AgCl, respectively. The excellent photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4/Ag@AgCl is attributed to the LSPR effect of Ag NPs and O-doping g-C3N4, which broadens the absorbance performance of g-C3N4, the establishment of Z-type heterojunctions between AgCl NPs and g-C3N4 NSs and Ag NPs as an electron transport bridge accelerate the photogenerated electrons transfer between AgCl and g-C3N4.

Recent progress, trends, and new challenges in the electrochemical production of green hydrogen coupled to selective electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF)

The production of clean electrical energy and the correct use of waste materials are two topics that currently concern humanity. In order to face both problems, extensive work has been done on the electrolytic production of green H2 coupled with the electrooxidative upgrading of biomass platform molecules. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is obtained from forest waste biomass and can be selectively oxidized to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) by electrochemical pathways. FDCA is an attractive precursor to polyethylene furanoate (PEF), with the potential to replace petroleum-based polyethylene terephthalate (PET). An integrated electrochemical system can simultaneously produce H2 and FDCA at a lower energy cost than that required for electrolytic water splitting. Here, the benefits of the electrochemical production of H2 and FDCA over other production methods are presented, as well as the innovative applications of each reaction product and the advantages of carrying out both reactions in a coupled system. The recently reported progress is disclosed, through an exploration of electrocatalyst materials used in simultaneous production, including the use of nickel foams (NF) as modification substrates, noble and non-noble metals, metal non-oxides, metal oxides, spinel oxides and the introduction of oxygen vacancies. Based on the latest trends, the next challenges associated with its large-scale production are proposed for its implementation in the industrial world. This work can offer a guideline for the detailed understanding of the electrooxidation of HMF towards FDCA with the production of H2, as well as the design of advanced electrocatalysts for the sustainable use of renewable resources.

Photocatalytic degradation of a typical macrolide antibiotic roxithromycin using polypropylene fibre sheet supported N-TiO2/graphene oxide composite materials

The post-treatment of recycling the fine photocatalyst nanoparticles restricts their application. In this study, a new photocatalytic material was synthesized by immobilizing the N-doped TiO2 and graphene oxide (GO) composite on polypropylene (PP) (N-TiO2/GO/PP) fibre sheet, and characterized based on X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The photocatalytic activity was evaluated using roxithromycin (ROX) as a typical antibiotic pollutant. XRD, Raman spectra and SEM images proved that N-TiO2/GO/PP fibre sheet was successfully synthesized. The photocatalytic degradation of 10 mg L-1 ROX can reach up to 90% and the degradation rate constant was 0.2299 h-1 in surface water with the application amount of TiO2/GO/PP fibre sheet of 24.6 cm × 2.7 cm and reaction time of 9 h under the irradiation of simulated sunlight. The application amount of TiO2/GO/PP fibre sheet, initial concentration of ROX and water matrix significantly affect the degradation of ROX. A low concentration of natural organic matter (NOM) slightly promoted the degradation of ROX, while a high concentration of NOM significantly inhibited the degradation of ROX. Alkaline condition (pH 8-9) is favourable for the photocatalytic degradation of ROX by TiO2/GO/PP fibre sheet. The photocatalytic reactivity of the TiO2/GO/PP fibre sheet showed no significant decrease after three runs. Two primary degradation products of ROX were identified and they showed lower ecotoxicity than ROX. The results demonstrate that the new synthesized TiO2/GO/PP fibre sheet shows promising application prospects in the treatment of antibiotics in wastewater and surface waters.

Facile Construction of 2D/2D ZnIn2S4-Based Bifunctional Photocatalysts for H2 Production and Simultaneous Degradation of Rhodamine B and Tetracycline

A two-dimensional/two-dimensional (2D/2D) TiO2/ZnIn2S4 photocatalyst was reasonably proposed and constructed by a two-step oil bath-hydrothermal method. TiO2 nanosheets uniformly grown on the surface of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets and a synergetic effect between the TiO2 and ZnIn2S4 could highly contribute to improving the specific surface area and hydrophilicity of ZnIn2S4 as well as accelerating the separation and transfer of photon-generated e--h+ pairs, and thus enhancing the visible-light photocatalytic degradation and H2 evolution performance of ZnIn2S4. Rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC) were simultaneously selected as the target pollutants for degradation in the work. The optimum photocatalytic RhB and TC degradation properties of TiO2/ZnIn2S4-10 wt% were almost 3.11- and 8.61-fold higher than that of pure ZnIn2S4, separately, while the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate was also observed in the presence of TiO2/ZnIn2S4-10wt% and 4.28-fold higher than that of ZnIn2S4. Moreover, the possible photocatalytic mechanisms for enhanced visible-light photocatalytic degradation and H2 evolution were investigated and proposed in detail. Our research results open an easy pathway for developing efficient bifunctional photocatalysts.

Efficient photodegradation of polystyrene microplastics integrated with hydrogen evolution: Uncovering degradation pathways

Photocatalytic microplastics (MPs) conversion into valuable products is a promising approach to alleviate MPs pollution in aquatic environments. Herein, we developed an amorphous alloy/photocatalyst composite (FeB/TiO₂) that can successfully convert polystyrene (PS) MPs to clean H₂ fuel and valuable organic compounds (92.3% particle size reduction of PS-MPs and 103.5 μmol H₂ production in 12 h). FeB effectively enhanced the light-absorption and carrier separation of TiO₂, thereby promoting more reactive oxygen species generation (especially ‧OH) and combination of photoelectrons with protons. The main products (e.g., benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, etc.) were identified. Additionally, the dominant PS-MPs photoconversion pathway was elucidated based on density functional theory calculations, by which the significant role of ‧OH was demonstrated in combination with radical quenching data. This study provides a prospective approach to mitigate MPs pollution in aquatic environments and reveals the synergistic mechanism governing the photocatalytic conversion of MPs and generation of H₂ fuel.

Environmentally friendly loading of palladium nanoparticles on nanoporous PET track-etched membranes grafted by poly(1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) via RAFT polymerization for the photocatalytic degradation of metronidazole

Nanoporous track-etched membranes (TeMs) are highly versatile materials that have shown promise in various applications such as filtration, separation, adsorption, and catalysis due to their mechanical integrity and high surface area. The performance of TeMs as catalysts for removing toxic pollutants is greatly influenced by the pore diameter, density, and functionalization of the nanochannels. In this study, the synthesis of functionalized poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) TeMs with Pd nanoparticles (NPs) as catalysts for the photodegradation of the antibiotic metronidazole (MTZ) was methodically investigated and their catalytic activity under UV irradiation was compared. Before loading of the Pd NPs, the surface and nanopore walls of the PET TeMs were grafted by poly(1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) via UV-initiated reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)-mediated graft copolymerization. The use of RAFT polymerization allowed for precise control over the degree of grafting and graft lengths within the nanochannels of PVP grafted PET TeMs (PVP-g-PET). Pd NPs were then loaded onto PVP-g-PET using several environmentally friendly reducing agents such as ascorbic acid, sodium borohydride and a plant extract. In addition, a conventional thermal reduction technique was also applied for the reduction of the Pd NPs. The grafting process created a surface with high-sorption capacity for MTZ and also high stabilizing effect for Pd NPs due to the functional PVP chains on the PET substrate. The structure and composition of the composite membranes were elucidated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, thermogravimetry, contact angle measurements and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopies. The effects of different types of reducing agents, pH, the amount of loaded catalyst and MTZ concentration on the MTZ catalytic degradation efficiency of the obtained composites were investigated. The efficiency of the catalyst prepared in the presence of ascorbic acid was superior to the others (89.86% removal at 30 mg L^-1 of MTZ). Maximum removal of MTZ was observed at the natural pH (6.5) of the MTZ solution at a concentration of 30 mg per L MTZ. The removal efficiency was decreased by increasing the catalyst dosage and the initial MTZ concentration. The reaction rate constant was reduced from 0.0144 to 0.0096 min^-1 by increasing the MTZ concentration from 20 to 50 mg L^-1. The photocatalyst revealed remarkable photocatalytic activity even after 10 consecutive cycles.

Antibiotics oxytetracycline removal by photocatalyst titanium dioxide and graphitic carbon nitride in aquaculture wastewater

The surge in the use of antibiotics, especially in aquaculture, has led to development of antibiotic resistance genes, which will harm environmental and public health. One of the most commonly used antibiotics in aquaculture is oxytetracycline (OTC). Employing photocatalysis, this study compared OTC degradation efficiency of two different types of common photocatalysts, TiO₂ and graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) in terms of their photochemical properties and underlying photocatalytic mechanism. For reference purpose, self-synthesized GCN from urea precursor (GCN-Urea) and commercial GCN (GCN-Commercial) were both examined. OTC adsorption-photocatalysis removal rates in pure OTC solution by TiO₂, GCN-Urea and GCN-Commercial were attained at 95%, 60% and 40% respectively. Photochemical properties evaluated included light absorption, band gap, valence and conduction band positions, photoluminescence, cyclic voltammetry, BET surface area and adsorption capability of the photocatalysts. Through the evaluations, this study provides novel insights towards current state-of-the-art heterogeneous photocatalytic processes. The electron-hole recombination examined by photoluminescence is not the key factor influencing the photocatalytic efficacies as commonly discussed. On the contrary, the dominating factors governing the higher OTC degradation efficiency of TiO₂ compared to GCN are the high mobility of electrons that leads to high redox capability and the high pollutant-photocatalyst affinity. These claims are proven by 86% and 40% more intense anodic and cathodic cyclic voltammetry curve peaks of TiO₂ as compared to both GCNs. OTC also demonstrated 1.7 and 2.3 times higher affinity towards TiO₂ than GCN-Urea and GCN-Commercial. OTC removal by TiO₂ in real aquaculture wastewater only achieved 50%, due to significant inhibition effect by dissolved solids, dissolved organic matters and high ionic contents in the wastewater.

Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline under Visible Light by an All-Solid-State Z-Scheme Ag3PO4/MIL-101(Cr) Heterostructure with Metallic Ag as a Charge Transmission Bridge

The Z-type Ag/Ag₃PO₄/MIL-101(Cr) heterojunction photocatalyst (referred to as AAM-x) was successfully prepared by a simple in situ precipitation method. The photocatalytic activity of the AAM-x samples was evaluated using a common tetracycline (TC) antibiotic. All AAM-x materials are more effective in removing TC than Ag₃PO₄ and MIL-101(Cr). Among them, AAM-3 exhibited efficient photodegradation efficiency and excellent structural stability, and the removal rate of TC (20 mg L^-1) by AAM-3 (0.5 g L^-1) under 60 min of visible light was 97.9%. The effects of photocatalyst dosage, pH, and inorganic anions were also systematically investigated. According to the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, metallic silver particles appeared on the surface of the Ag₃PO₄/MIL-101(Cr) mixture during the catalyst synthesis. The results of photoluminescence spectra, photocurrent response, EIS, and fluorescence lifetime showed that AAM-3 has a high photogenic charge separation efficiency. An all-solid-state Z-type heterojunction mechanism including Ag₃PO₄, metallic Ag, and MIL-101(Cr) is proposed to rationalize the excellent photocatalytic performance and photostability of AAM-x composites and to explain the effect of metallic Ag acting as a charge transfer bridge. The TC intermediates were identified using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and possible routes of TC degradation were also discussed. This work provides a viable idea for removing antibiotics by an Ag₃PO₄/MOF-based heterogeneous structured photocatalyst.

Pine Dendritic Bi/BiOBr Photocatalyst for Efficient Degradation of Antibiotics

Constructing Bi/BiOX (X = Cl, Br) heterostructures with unique electron transfer channels enables charge carriers to transfer unidirectionally at the metal/semiconductor junction and inhibits the backflow of photogenerated carriers. Herein, novel pine dendritic Bi/BiOX (X = Cl, Br) nanoassemblies with multiple electron transfer channels have been successfully synthesized with the assistance of l-cysteine (l-Cys) through a one-step solvothermal method. Such a pine dendritic Bi/BiOBr photocatalyst shows excellent activity toward the degradation of many antibiotics such as tetracycline (TC), norfloxacin, and ciprofloxacin. In particular, its photocatalytic degradation activity of TC is higher than those of reference spherical Bi/BiOBr, lamellar BiOBr, and BiOBr/Bi/BiOBr double-sided nanosheet arrays. Comprehensive characterizations demonstrate that the pine dendritic structure can construct multiple electron transfer channels from BiOBr to metallic Bi, resulting in an obviously promoted separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. The synthesis method that uses l-Cys to control the morphology provides a guidance to prepare special metal/semiconductor photocatalysts and would be helpful to design a highly efficient photocatalytic process.

Supported photocatalyst for Cr (VI) conversion and removal of organic pollutants

The photocatalytic property of available semiconductor catalysts still suffers from some urgent problems, such as the high excitation energy, easy agglomeration of powders, or weak recycling property. Therefore, developing novel visible light-supported catalysts and catalyst loading have aroused great attention recently. In this work, a novel Ag₃PO₄/BiVO₄/MWCNTs@Cotton functional fabric was prepared by introducing Ag₃PO₄ as a plasma resonance photocatalyst and MWCNTs with cotton as composite substrates. Not only did the introduction of Ag₃PO₄ and MWCNTs effectively strengthen the application ability of BiVO₄, but also inhibited the recombination of carriers, and promoted the transport of carriers according to spectroscopic and electrochemical tests. Degradation tests remained that Ag₃PO₄/BiVO₄/MWCNTs @cotton retained the high photocatalytic efficiency of the powder catalyst, along with the degradation degree of active blue KN-R (50mg/L) as well as Cr (VI) (20mg/L) could reach more than 90% within 120 min. What's more, the functional fabric has gained excellent performance in degrading pollutants for 5 cycles. Meanwhile, the prepared BiVO₄ is consistent with the band structure and electron density calculated theoretically by the GGA-PBE function. Free radical trapping and scavenging experiments exhibited that functional fabrics could produce active substances such as h⁺,·O₂^-, and·OH, among which the first two are the main active substances in the reaction. To sum up, this study is an effective attempt based on the existing problems of photocatalysts together with providing some study directions for the development of photocatalytic technology in the future.

Black-wattle tannin/kraft lignin H3PO4-activated carbon xerogels as excellent and sustainable adsorbents

This work proposed new black-wattle tannin/kraft lignin H₃PO₄-activated carbon xerogels as sustainable and efficient adsorbents. The precursors were chosen based on their eco-friendly and cost-effective nature, aiming to achieve adsorbents with high adsorption capacities. Carbon xerogels were synthesized through polycondensation with formaldehyde and alkaline catalyst in a simple one-pot procedure. Activation was performed using H₃PO₄ in a tubular furnace (500 °C), under a nitrogen atmosphere. Results show that the inclusion of the kraft lignin led to changes in the morphology of the materials, facilitating the development of their porous structure and increasing specific surface area and pore volume. The best adsorbent (XLT 50 %) was synthesized using a 1:1 tannin/kraft lignin mass ratio. This material presented an adsorption capacity of nearly 1150 mg g^-1 of methylene blue (pH = 5 and T = 298 K), which was linked to its high specific surface area of 1348 m² g^-1. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, whereas the adsorption isotherms were best fitted by the Sips model. The XLT 50 % presented good reusability properties, maintaining its adsorption capacity for 3 cycles. Finally, the XLT 50 % presented good adsorptive properties toward other pollutants (methyl orange, 4-chlorophenol, and hexavalent chromium), indicating its versatility for adsorption processes.

Bismuth-Based Multi-Component Heterostructured Nanocatalysts for Hydrogen Generation

Developing a unique catalytic system with enhanced activity is the topmost priority in the science of H2 energy to reduce costs in large-scale applications, such as automobiles and domestic sectors. Researchers are striving to design an effective catalytic system capable of significantly accelerating H2 production efficiency through green pathways, such as photochemical, electrochemical, and photoelectrochemical routes. Bi-based nanocatalysts are relatively cost-effective and environmentally benign materials which possess advanced optoelectronic properties. However, these nanocatalysts suffer back recombination reactions during photochemical and photoelectrochemical operations which impede their catalytic efficiency. However, heterojunction formation allows the separation of electron–hole pairs to avoid recombination via interfacial charge transfer. Thus, synergetic effects between the Bi-based heterostructured nanocatalysts largely improves the course of H2 generation. Here, we propose the systematic review of Bi-based heterostructured nanocatalysts, highlighting an in-depth discussion of various exceptional heterostructures, such as TiO2/BiWO6, BiWO6/Bi2S3, Bi2WO6/BiVO4, Bi2O3/Bi2WO6, ZnIn2S4/BiVO4, Bi2O3/Bi2MoO6, etc. The reviewed heterostructures exhibit excellent H2 evolution efficiency, ascribed to their higher stability, more exposed active sites, controlled morphology, and remarkable band-gap tunability. We adopted a slightly different approach for reviewing Bi-based heterostructures, compiling them according to their applicability in H2 energy and discussing challenges, prospects, and guidance to develop better and more efficient nanocatalytic systems.

Degradation of antibiotics by electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs): Performance, mechanisms, and perspectives

Global consumption and discharge of antibiotics have led to the rapid development and spread of bacterial antibiotic resistance. Among treatment strategies, electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) are gaining popularity for treating water/wastewater containing antibiotics due to their high efficiency and easiness of operation. In this review, we summarize various forms of EAOPs that contribute to antibiotic degradation, including common electrochemical oxidation (EO), electrolyte enhanced EO, electro-Fenton (EF) processes, EF-like process, and EAOPs coupling with other processes. Then we assess the performance of various EAOPs in antibiotic degradation and discuss the influence of key factors, including electrode, initial concentration and type of antibiotic, operation conditions, electrolyte, and water quality. We also review mechanisms and degradation pathways of various antibiotics degradation by EAOPs, and address the species and toxicity of intermediates produced during antibiotics treatment. Finally, we highlight challenges and critical research needs to facilitate the application of EAOPs in antibiotic treatment.

Antibiotics degradation by advanced oxidation process (AOPs): Recent advances in ecotoxicity and antibiotic-resistance genes induction of degradation products

Antibiotic contamination could cause serious risks of ecotoxicity and resistance gene induction. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) such as Fenton, photocatalysis, activated persulfate, electrochemistry and other AOPs technologies have been proven effective in the degradation of high-risk, refractory organic pollutants such as antibiotics. However, due to the limited mineralization ability, a large number of degradation intermediates will be produced in the oxidation process. The residual or undiscovered ecological risks of degradation products are potential safety hazards and problems necessitating comprehensive studies. In-depth investigations especially on the full assessments of ecotoxicity and resistance genes induction capability of antibiotic degradation products are important issues in reducing the environmental problems of antibiotics. Therefore, this review presents an overview of the current knowledge on the efficiency of different AOPs systems in reducing antibiotics toxicity and antibiotic resistance.

ZnO Particles Modified MgAl Coatings with Improved Photocatalytic Activity Formed by Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation of AZ31 Magnesium Alloy in Aluminate Electrolyte

MgAl and MgAl/ZnO coatings were prepared by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) of AZ31 magnesium alloy in aluminate electrolyte (5 g/L NaAlO2) without and with addition of ZnO particles in various concentrations. The MgAl coating was partially crystallized and contained MgO and MgAl2O4 phases. The addition of ZnO particles to aluminate electrolyte had no significant effect on the surface morphology of formed coatings, while the Zn content increased with ZnO particle concentrations. X-ray diffraction confirmed the incorporation of ZnO particles in the coatings. The photodegradation of methyl orange (10 cm3 of 8 mg/L) was used to measure the photocatalytic activity (PA) of MgAl and MgAl/ZnO coatings. The PA of MgAl coating after 8 h of irradiation was around 58%, while the PA of MgAl/ZnO coatings formed in aluminate electrolyte with the addition of ZnO particles in concentrations of 4 g/L, 8 g/L, and 12 g/L were around 69%, 86%, and 97%, respectively.

On-Site Application of Solar-Activated Membrane (Cr-Mn-Doped TiO2@Graphene Oxide) for the Rapid Degradation of Toxic Textile Effluents

Solar-activated water treatment has become an emerging research field due to its eco-friendly nature and the economic feasibility of green photocatalysis. Herein, we synthesized promising, cost-effective, and ultralong-semiconductor TiO₂ nanowires (NW), with the aim to degrade toxic azo dyes. The band gap of TiO₂ NW was tuned through transition metals, i.e., chromium (Cr) and manganese (Mn), and narrowed by conjugation with high surface area graphene oxide (GO) sheets. Cr-Mn-doped TiO₂ NWs were chemically grafted onto GO nanosheets and polymerized with sodium alginate to form a mesh network with an excellent band gap (2.6 eV), making it most suitable to act as a solar photocatalytic membrane. Cr-Mn-doped TiO₂ NW @GO aerogels possess high purity and crystallinity confirmed by Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction pattern. A Cr-Mn-doped TiO₂ NW @GO aerogels membrane was tested for the photodegradation of Acid Black 1 (AB 1) dye. The synthesized photocatalytic membrane in the solar photocatalytic reactor at conditions optimized by response surface methodology (statistical model) and upon exposure to solar radiation (within 180 min) degraded 100% (1.44 kg/m³/day) AB 1dye into simpler hydrocarbons, confirmed by the disappearance of dye color and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. An 80% reduction in water quality parameters defines Cr-Mn-doped TiO₂ NW @GO aerogels as a potential photocatalytic membrane to degrade highly toxic pollutants.

Kinetic and mechanism investigation on the gamma irradiation induced degradation of quizalofop-p-ethyl

An efficient gamma radiolytic decomposition of one of the extensively used herbicides in the world quizalofo-p-ethyl (QPE) was explored under different experimental conditions. Aqueous solutions of QPE were irradiated by gamma rays emitted by a Cobalt 60 source. QPE aqueous solutions were irradiated at doses of 0.5-3 kGy with 26.31 Gy min^-1 dose rate. Obtained results indicated that removal efficiency of 98.5% and 73% of QPE were obtained, respectively, in absence and in presence of dissolved oxygen. Change of absorption spectra, pH effect and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) were carried out and studied. It was found that all absorption bands decreased with increasing irradiation dose and disappear totally after 3 kGy applied dose. Three pH conditions (pH = 10, pH = 6.2 and pH = 3) were applied in radiolytic degradation of QPE showing that the best removal efficiency has been found for neutral pH. Interestingly, the % TOC removal reaches 98% at 3 kGy indicated practically total mineralization. Furthermore, spectrophotometric analyses argued in favour of a pseudo-first-order kinetic of QPE degradation. The resulting apparent rate constant value is approximately k_app = (0.012 ± 0.001) min^-1. Finally, several by-products such as 6-chloroquinoxalin -2-ol, 2-(4-hydroxy-phenyoxy) propionate, 1,4-hydroquinone, quinone, 4-chlorobenzene-1,2diol and 1,2,4-benzenetriol were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) evidencing that radiation process starting with the fragmentation of the molecule involving the hydroxyl radical, which is generated by the radiolysis of water. Based on the identification intermediates, a degradation mechanistic schema of QPE has been proposed.
