Abstract
We examined the associations of perinatal plasma carotenoids and E vitamers concentrations with glycemia, insulin resistance, and gestational and type 2 diabetes mellitus during pregnancy and post-pregnancy in GUSTO women. Plasma carotenoid and E vitamer concentrations were measured at delivery, and principal component analysis was used to derive the patterns of their concentrations. Fasting and 2 h glucose levels and fasting insulin were measured at 26-28 weeks gestation and 4-6 years post-pregnancy, with the derivation of homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). In 678 women, two carotenoid patterns (CP1: α- and β-carotene and lutein; CP2: zeaxanthin, lycopene, and β-cryptoxanthin) and one E vitamer pattern (VE: γ-, δ-, and α-tocopherols) were derived. A higher CP1 score (1-SD) was associated with lower gestational fasting glucose (β (95%CI): -0.06 (-0.10, -0.02) mmol/L) and lower gestational (-0.17 (-0.82, 0.01) mmol/L, p = 0.06) and post-pregnancy HOMA-IR (-0.11 (-0.15, -0.08) mmol/L). A higher VE score (1 SD) was associated with higher gestational and post-pregnancy fasting and 2 h glucose (gestational: 0.05 (0.01, 0.08) and 0.08 (0.01, 0.16); post-pregnancy: 0.19 (0.07, 0.31) and 0.24 (0.06, 0.42) mmol/L). Higher α- and β-carotene and lutein may be beneficial for gestational fasting glycemia, but higher vitamin E may increase gestational and post-pregnancy glycemia, although these findings require confirmation in cohorts with prospective longitudinal measurements of these vitamins.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Few studies examined the influence of carotenoids and vitamin E on blood pressure or hypertension during and after pregnancy. We related perinatal plasma concentrations of carotenoids and vitamin E (in individual forms and in combination) to blood pressure and hypertension at late pregnancy and 4 years post-pregnancy. METHODS AND RESULTS In 684 women of the Growing Up in Singapore Towards Healthy Outcomes cohort, we quantified plasma carotenoids and vitamin E concentrations at delivery. Systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) around 37-39 weeks' gestation were extracted from obstetric records and measured at 4 years post-pregnancy. Principal component analysis derived patterns of carotenoids (CP) and vitamin E. Associations were examined using linear or logistic regressions adjusting for confounders. Two carotenoids (CP1: α-carotene, β-carotene, and lutein; CP2: zeaxanthin, lycopene, and β-cryptoxanthin) and one vitamin E (γ-, δ-, and α-tocopherols) patterns were derived. CP1 (1SD score increment) was associated with lower SBP and DBP [β (95% CI): -2.36 (-3.47, -1.26) and -1.37 (-2.21, -0.53) mmHg] at late pregnancy> and 4 years post-pregnancy [-1.45 (-2.72, -0.18) and -0.99 (-1.98, -0.01) mmHg]. Higher β-cryptoxanthin concentrations were associated with lower SBP and DBP [-1.50 (-2.49, -0.51) and -1.20 (-1.95, -0.46) mmHg] at late pregnancy. Individual vitamin E and their pattern were not associated with blood pressure or hypertension. CONCLUSION Higher perinatal α-carotene, β-carotene, and lutein concentrations are associated with lower blood pressure in women at late pregnancy and post-pregnancy. Foods rich in these carotenoids, such as red-, orange-, and dark-green-colored vegetables, might be beneficial for blood pressure during and after pregnancy.

Abstract
Objective. Analyzing the vitamin A content in early pregnancy and finding out the relationship between the serum levels of vitamin A of pregnant women and hypertensive disorder. Method. A total of 4,188 pregnant women who had took part in vitamin A testing in Miyun District Hospital from November 2016 to March 2020 were collected. The serum levels of vitamin A were determined by high performance liquid chromatography, and clinical and testing data were collected for statistical analysis. The original data outcome was finally analyzed with the SPSS. Results. 266 Hypertensive disorder cases and 2836 normal pregnancy cases were analyzed with 27 cases of twin pregnancy, 315 cases without follow-up and 744 of diabetic pregnancies excluded. The 266 women were divided into four groups: 110 women were diagnosed gestational hypertension, 65 women were diagnosed preeclampsia, 78 women were diagnosed pregnancy with chronic hypertension, and 13 women were diagnosed chronic hypertension with preeclampsia. The results shows that vitamin A level of the hypertensive group was 0.46(±0.08) mg/L, 0.47 (±0.012) mg/L, 0.47 (±0.09) mg/L, and 0.52 (±0.012) mg/L, respectively, while the level of normal group was 0.44 (±0.09) mg/L. We found that there were differences between the normal pregnant group and the preeclampsia group with statistical significance (P < 0.05). The difference between the pregnancy with chronic hypertension group and the normal group was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The difference between the chronic hypertension with preeclampsia group and the normal group was also statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion. Serum levels of vitamin A in early pregnant women have a certain correlation with the hypertensive disorder.

Abstract
In evaluating vitamin E (VE) nutritional status of preterm infants, it is essential that any data should be compared with those of healthy term infants, and never with those of adults. Moreover, it should be evaluated in terms of gestational age (GA), not birth weight (BW), because placental transfer of most nutrients from mother to fetus is dependent on GA, not BW. Judging from the limited data during the last 75 years, there was no significant correlation between GA and VE concentrations in circulation or in the red blood cells (RBCs), leukocytes, and buccal mucosal cells. In addition, the oxidizability of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in plasma or RBCs, as targets for protection by VE chain-breaking ability, was lower in preterm infants. However, because of the minimal information available about hepatic VE levels, which is considered a key determinant of whole body VE status, the decision on whether VE status of preterm infants is comparable with that of term infants should be postponed. Clinical trials of VE supplementation in preterm infants were repeatedly undertaken to investigate whether VE reduces severity or inhibits development of several diseases specific to preterm infants, namely retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), and germinal matrix hemorrhage - intraventricular hemorrhage (GMH-IVH). Most of these trials resulted in a misfire, with a few exceptions for IVH prevention. However, almost all these studies were performed from 1980s to early 1990s, in the pre-surfactant era, and the study populations were composed of mid-preterm infants with GAs of approximately 30 weeks (wks). There is considerable difference in 'preterm infants' between the pre- and post-surfactant eras; modern neonatal medicine mainly treats preterm infants of 28 wks GA or less. Therefore, these results are difficult to apply in modern neonatal care. Before considering new trials of VE supplementation, we should fully understand modern neonatal medicine, especially the recent method of oxygen supplementation. Additionally, a deeper understanding of recent progress in pathophysiology and therapies for possible target diseases is necessary to decide whether VE administration is still worth re-challenging in modern neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). In this review, we present recent concepts and therapeutic trends in ROP, BPD, and GMH-IVH for those unfamiliar with neonatal medicine. Numerous studies have reported the possible involvement of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced damage in relation to supplemental oxygen use, inflammation, and immature antioxidant defense in the development of both BPD and ROP. Various antioxidants effectively prevented the exacerbation of BPD and ROP in animal models. In the future, VE should be re-attempted as a complementary factor in combination with various therapies for BPD, ROP, and GMH-IVH. Because VE is a natural and safe supplement, we are certain that it will attract attention again in preterm medicine.

Abstract
Lutein is a dietary carotenoid preferentially accumulated in the eye and the brain in early life and throughout the life span. Lutein accumulation in areas of high metabolism and oxidative stress such as the eye and the brain suggest a unique role of this ingredient during the development and maturation of these organs of common embryological origin. Lutein is naturally provided to the developing baby via the cord blood, breast milk and then infant diet. The presence of this carotenoid depends on fruit and vegetable intakes and its bioavailability is higher in breastmilk. This paper aims to review the anatomical development of the eye and the brain, explore the presence and selective deposition of lutein in these organs during pregnancy and infancy and, based on its functional characteristics, present the latest available research on the beneficial role of lutein in the pediatric population. The potential effects of lutein in ameliorating conditions associated with increase oxidative stress such as in prematurity will be also addressed. Since consumption of lutein rich foods falls short of government guidelines and in most region of the world infant formulas lack this bioactive, dietary recommendations for pregnant and breastfeeding women and their child can help to bridge the gap.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Examine the levels of plasma antioxidant vitamins before and during a treatment with placebo or vitamin E + C supplement to prevent preeclampsia (PE). STUDY DESIGN Per-protocol analysis of a subset group of pregnant women (n = 295) from the International Trial of Antioxidants for the Prevention of PE (INTAPP) randomized case-control study. Normotensive receiving placebo or vitamins (n = 115 and 87 respectively) were compared to gestational hypertension (GH) without proteinuria (n = 30 and 27) and PE (n = 21 and 15). Vitamin quantification was performed at 12-18, 24-26 and 32-34 weeks of gestation. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Coenzyme (Co) Q10, β-carotene and vitamins E (α and γ forms) plasma levels. RESULTS Vitamin E + C supplementation was found to increase the α-tocopherol levels by 40% but was associated with a 57% decrease in the γ-tocopherol isoform for all study groups (p < 0.001). The β -carotene was lower in the PE than in the normotensive and GH groups (p < 0.001) while the level of CoQ10 remained unaffected. CONCLUSIONS A more personalized approach that target the suboptimal levels of specific antioxidants without disturbing the α/γ-tocopherol ratio could be a more successful approach to counteract oxidative stress in PE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND α-Tocopherol (αT) is essential for fetal development. One study has shown that the human placenta preferentially transfers the natural stereoisomer, RRR-αT. But prenatal supplements generally contain synthetic αT (S-αT). OBJECTIVES We aimed to determine if umbilical cord plasma is enriched for RRR-αT in racially diverse neonates from both uncomplicated and complicated pregnancies and if cord RRR-αT enrichment is impacted by maternal αT stereoisomer profile. METHODS We measured αT and αT stereoisomers in plasma from a randomly selected subset of 66 predominantly black and Hispanic maternal-fetal pairs from the Camden Study involving control (n = 28) and complicated pregnancies (n = 38). We collected maternal plasma at study entry (week 16 gestation; w16) and week 28 gestation (w28) and cord plasma at birth. RESULTS RRR-αT was the predominant stereoisomer in all maternal and cord plasma samples, but S-αT stereoisomers were found in most samples and comprised a high percentage of αT in some maternal-neonate pairs. Cord plasma had a higher percentage RRR-αT (P < 0.05) and lower percentage S-αT (P < 0.0001) than w28 plasma. Pregnancy status did not impact maternal or cord plasma concentrations of αT, RRR-αT, or S-αT; except plasma from complicated pregnancies was higher in S-αT at w28 than at w16 (P < 0.05). Maternal w28 αT did not correlate with cord αT. However, both maternal w28 αT and S-αT positively correlated with both cord S-αT (r = 0.340, P = 0.0049; r = 0.538, P < 0.00001) and percentage S-αT (r = 0.399, P = 0.001; r = 0.786, P < 0.00001) but negatively correlated with cord percentage RRR-αT (r = -0.399, P = 0.0009; r = -0.786, P < 0.00001). CONCLUSIONS The proportion of RRR-αT was higher in cord compared with maternal plasma in both uncomplicated and complicated pregnancies. Our data suggest that maternal S-αT raises cord S-αT and decreases the proportion of RRR-αT in the neonatal circulation. Because the bioactivities of RRR-αT and S-αT differ, this warrants future research to determine the importance of our observations to neonatal αT status.

Abstract
Background Lutein (L), zeaxanthin (Z), and meso-zeaxanthin (MZ), collectively called the macular pigment (MP), are dietary carotenoids that preferentially localize in the macula of the human eye. MP protects the macula from photo-oxidative damage and enhances visual function. Inadequate maternal intake of carotenoids, coupled with the placental transfer of maternal carotenoids to support fetal brain and retina development, potentially put mothers at risk of depletion systemically and in their ocular tissues. Presently, maternal carotenoid status throughout pregnancy remains poorly characterized, and no prospective randomized controlled trial of L and Z supplementation via prenatal vitamins has assessed maternal and infants’ systemic and ocular carotenoid status during pregnancy. We hypothesize that prenatal maternal carotenoid supplementation will counteract maternal carotenoid depletion during pregnancy and will improve biomarkers of carotenoid status of both mothers and infants. Methods Lutein and Zeaxanthin in Pregnancy (L-ZIP) is a phase 2, single-center, prospective, double-masked, randomized active-controlled clinical trial conducted at the John A. Moran Eye Center, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT, USA. Participants consume a daily standard prenatal multivitamin with no added carotenoids and are randomized (1:1 allocation) to receive either a capsule containing 10 mg L and 2 mg Z in safflower oil (Carotenoid group) or a capsule containing only safflower oil with no added carotenoids (Control group) for a period of 6 to 8 months. Skin, serum, and ocular carotenoids are measured at every study visit (i.e., within the first trimester [baseline], second trimester, third trimester, and 0–2 weeks postpartum). Skin carotenoid assessment is by resonance Raman spectroscopy (RRS); serum carotenoid status is quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); and MP is measured with the dual-wavelength autofluorescence. Infants’ MP and foveal anatomy are assessed using RetCam retinal camera and Bioptigen SD-OCT, respectively. The primary outcomes are changes in maternal systemic and ocular carotenoid status during pregnancy. Discussion L-ZIP is the first prospective RCT to investigate maternal carotenoid status throughout pregnancy and to determine whether prenatal maternal carotenoid supplementation will offset maternal carotenoid depletion and improve biomarkers of maternal and infant’s carotenoid status. Findings from L-ZIP will strengthen recommendations regarding prenatal carotenoid supplementation and consequently inform policy decisions. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03750968. Maternal Lutein and Zeaxanthin Concentrations in Relation to Offspring Visual Acuity at 3 Years of Age: The GUSTO Study. Nutrients 2020; 12:nu12020274. Abstract
Lutein and zeaxanthin play important roles in visual functions, but their influence on early visual development is unclear. We related maternal lutein and zeaxanthin concentrations during pregnancy to offspring visual acuity (VA) in 471 mother–child pairs from the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) cohort. Maternal concentrations of plasma lutein and zeaxanthin were determined at delivery. We measured uncorrected distance of VA in 3-year old children using a LEA Symbols chart; readings were converted to the logarithm of Minimum Angle of Resolution (logMAR), with >0.3 logMAR indicating poor VA. Associations were examined using linear or Poisson regression adjusted for confounders. The median (inter-quartile range) of maternal lutein and zeaxanthin concentrations were 0.13 (0.09, 0.18) and 0.09 (0.07, 0.12) µmol/L, respectively. A total of 126 children had poor VA. The highest tertile of maternal zeaxanthin concentration was associated with 38% lower likelihood of poor VA in children (95% CI: 0.42, 0.93, p-Trends = 0.02). Higher maternal lutein concentrations were associated with a lower likelihood of poor VA in children (RR 0.60 (95% CI: 0.40, 0.88) for middle tertile; RR 0.78 (95% CI: 0.51, 1.19) for highest tertile (p-Quadratic = 0.02)). In conclusion, lutein and zeaxanthin status during pregnancy may influence offspring early visual development; but the results require confirmation with further studies, including more comprehensive measurements of macular functions.

Abstract
Optimized nutrition during the first 1000 days (from conception through the 2nd birthday) is critical for healthy development and a healthy life for the newborn. Pregnancy and the postpartum period are accompanied by physiological changes, increased energy needs, and changing requirements in the nutrients critical for optimal growth and development. Infants and toddlers also experience physiological changes and have specific nutritional needs. Food and nutrition experts can provide women of childbearing age with adequate dietary advice to optimize nutrition, as well as guidance on selecting appropriate dietary supplements. Considering the approaching 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) will be making specific recommendations for children, it is important to provide accurate scientific information to support health influencers in the field of nutrition. The purpose of this review is to summarize the nutrition and supplementation literature for the first 1000 days; to highlight nutritional and knowledge gaps; and to educate nutrition influencers to provide thoughtful guidance to mothers and families. Optimal nutrition during pregnancy through early childhood is critical for supporting a healthy life. Nutrition influencers, such as dietitians, obstetricians/gynecologists, and other relevant health professionals, should continue guiding supplement and food intake and work closely with expectant families and nutrition gatekeepers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To test the hypothesis that maternal plasma alpha-tocopherol levels are associated with protection from childhood wheeze and that this protection is modified by gamma-tocopherol. STUDY DESIGN We conducted a prospective nested study in the Infant Susceptibility to Pulmonary Infections and Asthma Following Respiratory Syncytial Virus Exposure birth cohort of 652 children with postpartum maternal plasma vitamin E isoforms used as a surrogate for pregnancy concentrations. Our outcomes were wheezing and recurrent wheezing over a 2-year period, ascertained using validated questionnaires. We assessed the association of alpha- and gamma-tocopherol with wheezing outcomes using multivariable adjusted logistic regression, and tested for interaction between the isoforms with respect to the risk for wheezing outcomes. RESULTS Children with wheezing (n = 547, n = 167; 31%) and recurrent wheezing (n = 545, n = 55; 10.1%) over a 2-year period were born to mothers with significantly lower postpartum maternal plasma concentrations of alpha-tocopherol, P = .016 and P = .007, respectively. In analyses of IQR increases, alpha-tocopherol was associated with decreased risk of wheezing (aOR 0.70 [95% CI 0.53,0.92]) and recurrent wheezing (aOR 0.63 [95% CI 0.42,0.95]). For gamma-tocopherol, the aOR for wheezing was 0.79 (95% CI 0.56-1.10) and the aOR for recurrent wheezing was 0.56 (95% CI 0.33-0.94, with nonmonotonic association). The association of alpha-tocopherol with wheezing was modified by gamma-tocopherol (P interaction = .05). CONCLUSIONS Increases in postpartum maternal plasma alpha-tocopherol isoform concentrations were associated with decreased likelihood of wheezing over a 2-year period. Gamma-tocopherol modified this association.

Abstract
It is now widely accepted that nutrition during critical periods in early development, both pre- and postnatal, may have lifetime consequences in determining health or onset of major diseases in the adult life. Dietary carotenoids have shown beneficial health effects throughout the life cycle due to their potential antioxidant properties, their ability to serves as precursors of vitamin A and to the emerging signaling functions of their metabolites. The non-provitamin A carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are emerging as important modulators of infant and child visual and cognitive development, as well as critical effectors in the prevention and treatment of morbidity associated with premature births. This review provides a general overview of lutein and zeaxanthin metabolism in mammalian tissues and highlights the major advancements and remaining gaps in knowledge in regards to their metabolism and health effects during pre- and early post-natal development. Furthering our knowledge in this area of research will impact dietary recommendation and supplementation strategies aimed at sustaining proper fetal and infant growth.

Abstract
Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxicant known to affect the developing fetal brain as a sensitive target organ. As most mercury (Hg) in blood is MeHg, total mercury (THg) levels in blood are used to estimate the body burden of MeHg. The nutrients selenium (Se), vitamin E, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are protective against MeHg toxicity. We compared maternal and cord blood concentrations of biochemical substances, THg and Se, vitamin E, DHA, and other elements, fatty acids, and amino acids in 54 Japanese mother-newborn pairs to elucidate the fetal risk of MeHg toxicity. Cord blood had higher hematocrit and amino acid values and lower concentrations of lipid components, including fatty acids compared with maternal blood. THg levels in cord blood (7.26ng/g) were 1.9 times higher than levels in maternal blood (3.79ng/g). Se concentrations in cord blood (176ng/g) were slightly higher than concentrations in maternal blood (156ng/g). Levels of vitamin E (0.31mg/dL) and DHA (58.8μg/mL) in cord blood were much lower than levels in maternal blood (1.38mg/dL and 147μg/mL, respectively). The ratios of Se/THg, vitamin E/THg, and DHA/THg in cord blood were lower than ratios in maternal blood. These results suggest that fetuses are at higher risk to MeHg toxicity.

Abstract
Adequate nutrition is particularly important during pregnancy since it is needed not only for maintaining the health of the mother, but also determines the course of pregnancy and its outcome, fetus development as well as the child’s health after birth and during the later period of life. Data coming from epidemiological and interventions studies support the observation that carotenoids intake provide positive health effects in adults and the elderly population. These health effects are the result of their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Recent studies have also demonstrated the significant role of carotenoids during pregnancy and infancy. Some studies indicate a correlation between carotenoid status and lower risk of pregnancy pathologies induced by intensified oxidative stress, but results of these investigations are equivocal. Carotenoids have been well studied in relation to their beneficial role in the prevention of preeclampsia. It is currently hypothesized that carotenoids can play an important role in the prevention of preterm birth and intrauterine growth restriction. Carotenoid status in the newborn depends on the nutritional status of the mother, but little is known about the transfer of carotenoids from the mother to the fetus. Carotenoids are among the few nutrients found in breast milk, in which the levels are determined by the mother’s diet. Nutritional status of the newborn directly depends on its diet. Both mix feeding and artificial feeding may cause depletion of carotenoids since infant formulas contain only trace amounts of these compounds. Carotenoids, particularly lutein and zeaxanthin play a significant role in the development of vision and nervous system (among others, they are important for the development of retina as well as energy metabolism and brain electrical activity). Furthermore, more scientific evidence is emerging on the role of carotenoids in the prevention of disorders affecting preterm infants, who are susceptible to oxidative stress, particularly retinopathy of prematurity.

Abstract
Background: Vitamins A and E deficiency is prevalent in developing countries, and plasma levels are low in pregnancy. This study was undertaken to determine the serum Vitamins A and E status among pregnant women attending antenatal care at a General Hospital in Dawakin Kudu, Kano and to provide the necessary information needed to suggest the supplementation of Vitamins A and E during pregnancy. Methods: The study was done in General Hospital Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area. Dawakin Kudu, a rural community in Kano State is about 12 km from Kano metropolis which is the most populous city in Nigeria and commercial nerve center of Northern Nigeria. Most of the women are housewives, however, some engage in subsistent farming and petty trading. This was a prospective study of 200 pregnant women at various maternal ages, gestational ages, and parities. Informed consent was obtained from the participants. Research structured questionnaire was administered to 200 respondents which showed age and parity distributions. Determination of Serum Vitamins A and E was done using methods of Bessey, et al. and Tsen. Ethical approval for the research was obtained from General Hospital, Dawakin Kudu, Kano. Statistical Analysis Used: Data obtained were analyzed using SPSS version 17 statistical software (SPSS Inc., IL, Chicago, USA). Descriptive statistics was done. Mean serum Vitamins A and E concentration between trimesters were compared using two-way ANOVA and P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Majority of the women were aged 20–39 years with mean of 23.67 ± 6.11. Most were in the 1–4 parity range. Mean birth weight was 2.42 ± 0.74 kg. Above 65% were deficient while 34.5% had normal levels of Vitamin A and 51% were deficient of serum Vitamin E. Serum Vitamins A and E levels showed a marked reduction from first through third trimester. The differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusions: There is a significant reduction in the serum Vitamins A and E concentration throughout the period of pregnancy with the highest levels in the first trimester. Therefore, further studies should evaluate the value of Vitamins A and E supplementation during pregnancy especially for those whose fruit and vegetable consumption is inadequate.

Abstract
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplementation in pregnancy may confer some clinical benefits; however, this compound can exert pro-oxidant effects. In this study, we investigated the effects of DHA on pro-oxidant/antioxidant balance in term and preterm placental explants, assessing oxidative stress marker concentrations, antioxidant capacity and pro-inflammatory cytokine production. Term (n=8) and preterm (n=9) placental explants were exposed to lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 1 ng/ml), DHA (1, 10 and 100 μM), and DHA and LPS simultaneously or pre-treated with DHA for 24 h prior to LPS treatment. The production of malondialdehyde (MDA, lipid peroxidation), 8-hydroxy-2-deoxy guanosine (8-OHdG, oxidative DNA damage) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumour necrosis factor α (TNFα), interleukin 6 and interferon-γ) and total antioxidant capacity were measured. DHA at a concentration of 100 μM induced oxidative stress in term placentas, while at all the three concentrations, it induced oxidative stress in preterm placentas. DHA and LPS resulted in reduced MDA levels in term (P<0.005) and preterm (P=0.004) placentas and reduced 8-OHdG levels in preterm placentas (P=0.035). DHA pre-treatment, but not co-treatment with LPS, reduced 8-OHdG levels (P<0.001) in term placentas. DHA increased antioxidant capacity only in term placentas (P<0.001), with lower antioxidant capacity being observed overall in preterm placentas compared with term placentas (P≤0.001). In term placentas, but not in preterm ones, DHA co-treatment and pre-treatment reduced LPS-induced TNFα levels. The ability of DHA to alter placental pro-oxidant/antioxidant balance is dependent on the DHA concentration used and the gestational age of the placental tissue. DHA has a greater capacity to increase oxidative stress in preterm placentas, but it offers greater protection against inflammation-induced oxidative stress in term placentas. This appears to be a result of DHA altering placental antioxidant capacity. These data have implications for the timing and concentration of DHA supplementation in pregnancy.

Abstract
Retinol, tocopherols, coenzyme Q10, carotenoids, and vitamin D are lipophilic compounds shown to function as important health-protective agents by mitigating the damaging effects of oxidative and other injury. Scientific interest in evaluating these compounds has resurfaced in recent years, particularly in the nutritional, clinical and epidemiologic fields, and has precipitated the development of a multitude of new analytical techniques. This review considers recent developments in HPLC-based assays since 2007 for the simultaneous determination of these lipid-phase compounds utilizing exclusively serum or plasma as these matrices are mostly used in clinical and epidemiological investigations. We also provide an overview of blood measurements for selected carotenoids, tocopherols, coenzyme Q10 and retinol from the last 15years of healthy umbilical cord blood, children, and adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In developing countries, deficiencies in essential micronutrients are common, particularly in pregnant women. Although, biochemical indicators of diet and nutrition are useful to assess nutritional status, few studies have examined such indicators throughout pregnancy in women in developing countries. METHODS The primary objective of this study was to assess the nutritional status of 78 Peruvian women throughout pregnancy for 16 different nutritional indicators including fat-soluble vitamins and carotenoids, iron-status indicators, and selenium. Venous blood samples from which serum was prepared were collected during trimesters one (n = 78), two (n = 65), three (n = 62), and at term via the umbilical cord (n = 52). Questionnaires were completed to determine the demographic characteristics of subjects. Linear mixed effects models were used to study the associations between each maternal indicator and the demographic characteristics. RESULTS None of the women were vitamin A and E deficient at any stage of pregnancy and only 1/62 women (1.6%) was selenium deficient during the third trimester. However, 6.4%, 44% and 64% of women had ferritin levels indicative of iron deficiency during the first, second and third trimester, respectively. Statistically significant changes (p ≤ 0.05) throughout pregnancy were noted for 15/16 nutritional indicators for this Peruvian cohort, with little-to-no association with demographic characteristics. Three carotenoids (beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin and trans-lycopene) were significantly associated with education status, while trans-lycopene was associated with age and beta-cryptoxanthin with SES (p < 0.05). Concentrations of retinol, tocopherol, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein + zeaxanthin and selenium were lower in cord serum compared with maternal serum (p < 0.05). Conversely, levels of iron status indicators (ferritin, transferrin saturation and iron) were higher in cord serum (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The increasing prevalence of iron deficiency throughout pregnancy in these Peruvian women was expected. It was surprising though not to find deficiencies in other nutrients. The results highlight the importance of continual monitoring of women throughout pregnancy for iron deficiency which could be caused by increasing fetal needs and/or inadequate iron intake as pregnancy progresses.

Abstract
We have determined and compared the concentration levels of retinol and β-carotene in the plasma of three Sudanese women groups (displaced southern Sudanese women (DSSW), non-displaced southern Sudanese (NDSSW) and northern Sudanese women (NSW)), who were either pregnant or non-pregnant; and in their neonates (cord plasma). Plasma samples were analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography using reversed-phase column and diode-array detectors. The results revealed that retinol and β-carotene in the plasma of non-pregnant and pregnant women in the three groups were very low compared with studies reported elsewhere. Over 50% of pregnant DSSW and NDSSW had a low concentration of retinol plasma (< 0.70 µmol/L), and about 15-20% were deficient (< 0.35 µmol/L) according to World Health Organization criteria. Although the average retinol concentration in the plasma of pregnant NSW was > 0.70 µmol/L, which suggests sufficiency status, 32% showed lower levels and 10% were deficient. Plasma retinol β-carotene levels in the neonates' cords were also lower than their mothers and in comparison with other studies. These findings are in agreement with previous survey data and clinical reports, which also suggest that vitamin A deficiency is of great concern in the country. We concluded that insufficient intake of food of animal origin and repeated malarial and other parasitic diseases are the most likely causes of vitamin A deficiency.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The transfer of vitamin E across the placenta is limited, but no data exist on the concentrations of vitamin E metabolites carboxyethyl hydroxychromans (α- and γ-CEHCs) in the fetal circulation. OBJECTIVE We measured α- and γ-CEHC concentrations in maternal and umbilical cord blood pairs and examined their relations to circulating vitamin E (α- and γ-tocopherol) and maternal dietary vitamin E intake. DESIGN Healthy, pregnant women were enrolled from Oregon Health and Science University's obstetric clinic (<22 wk gestation), and at least one fasting blood sample and a previous day's 24-h diet recall were collected during their pregnancy (n = 19). Umbilical cord blood samples were obtained at the time of delivery and were analyzed for α- and γ-tocopherol, α- and γ-CEHC, and total lipid concentrations. RESULTS Mean (±SD) concentrations of umbilical cord blood α-CEHC (30.2 ± 28.9 nmol/L) and γ-CEHC (104.5 ± 61.3 nmol/L) were not significantly different from maternal concentrations (P = 0.07 and 0.08, respectively), but metabolite:tocopherol ratios were significantly higher in cord blood (P < 0.01 and 0.001, respectively). Maternal α-tocopherol:total lipids ratios were correlated with cord blood α-CEHCs (r = 0.67, P = 0.004), and higher vitamin E intakes were associated with higher cord blood α-CEHC concentrations (r = 0.75, P < 0.003). CONCLUSION Higher maternal intake of vitamin E during pregnancy may result in increased metabolite concentrations in the fetal circulation, suggesting increased maternal or fetal liver metabolism of vitamin E. Abstract
BACKGROUND Maternal smoking has been suggested as a source of oxidant stress in pregnant women and in newborns exposed in utero. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of maternal smoking on oxidant status and antioxidant vitamins of mother-infant pairs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Socioeconomic and diet characteristics were recorded from 20 smoker and 20 non-smoker pregnant women of 36 weeks' gestation. On the day of delivery, venous blood samples of the women and cord bloods were taken. On postpartum day 7, milk and infant urine samples were collected. Plasma and milk beta-carotene, retinol, alpha-tocopherol and cotinine levels, plasma malondialdehyde levels, and urine cotinine levels were measured. RESULTS Milk alpha-tocopherol levels of smoking mothers were lower than those of non-smoking mothers. In smokers, there were no correlations between maternal vitamin A intakes and milk levels of retinol, and between maternal plasma levels and milk levels of beta-carotene. CONCLUSIONS Maternal smoking may lead to decreased milk levels of vitamin E, as a result of making use of this antioxidant in order to limit lipid peroxidation, as well as may lead to a possible limitation on the transfer of lipophilic antioxidants including vitamin A from blood plasma to milk. Further investigations conducted in large populations will be needed to assess the effects of maternal smoking on the oxidant and antioxidant status of breast milk.

Abstract
Vitamin E is an important lipophilic antioxidant. The term refers to eight essential naturally occurring fat-soluble nutrients called tocopherols or tocotrienols. Among these isomers, alpha-tocopherol has the highest biologically active form and is found in all lipoprotein fractions. Vitamin E deficiency during pregnancy may cause miscarriage, preterm birth, preeclampsia, and intrauterine growth restriction. This review highlights recent findings that have led to a better understanding of vitamin E absorption, transport, bioavailability, and its role in pregnancy, and that underline the need for re-evaluation of the potential benefits of vitamin E supplementation in pregnant women.

Abstract
Retinol and carotenoid levels were determined spectrophotometrically in the blood of 222 mothers at delivery and in the umbilical cord of the newborns. We observed an important prevalence of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) among mothers and newborns (25.4% and 46.2%, respectively) as well as carotenoid inadequacy (52.3% and 92.6% in mothers and newborns, respectively), and an increased risk of VAD development among newborns whose mothers had VAD (odds ratio = 4.79). We found an increased risk of carotenoid inadequacy when VAD was already present in both groups (odds ratio = 2.21 and odds ratio = 6.85 in mothers and newborns, respectively). There were relationships between previous abortion and maternal VAD (P=0.022) and lower carotenoid levels among newborns (P=0.019), as well as inadequate maternal serum carotenoid levels and interdelivery interval less than 18 months. These findings suggest the need for interventional actions to prevent retinol and carotenoid inadequacy, and low antioxidant reserves.

Abstract
Vitamins A and E are essential, naturally occurring, fat-soluble nutrients that are involved in several important biological processes such as immunity, protection against tissue damage, reproduction, growth and development. They are extremely important during the early stages of life and must be transferred adequately to the young during gestation and lactation. The present article presents an overview of their biological functions, metabolism and dynamics of transfer to offspring in mammals. Among other topics, the review focuses on the biochemical aspects of their intestinal absorption, blood transport, tissue uptake, storage and catabolism. It also describes their different roles as well as their use as preventive and therapeutic agents. Finally, the mechanisms involved in their transfer during gestation and lactation are discussed.

Abstract
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble nutrient that is extremely important during the early stages of life, from the time of conception to the postnatal development of the infant. The mechanisms involved in its placental and mammary uptake appear to be allowed by the presence of lipoprotein receptors (LDL-receptor, VLDL-receptor, scavenger receptor class B type I) together with lipoprotein lipase at the placental and mammary barriers. In addition, alpha-tocopherol transfer protein has been described as playing an essential role in the selective transfer of RRR-alpha-tocopherol across the placenta. Lower alpha-tocopherol concentrations are found in cord blood as compared to maternal circulation. The ingestion of colostrum which contains very high levels of vitamin E is therefore of utmost importance to supply the newborn with an essential defense against oxygen toxicity. Pregnancy is sometimes associated with complications that may lead to a premature delivery of the baby. Preterm infants are usually facing an oxidative stress that is among others related to a deficiency in alpha-tocopherol, as it accumulates mainly during the third trimester of pregnancy. Despite vitamin E supplementation, preterm infants usually require significantly longer to replenish their serum alpha-tocopherol levels than full-term infants. The use of vitamin E as a therapeutic agent in preeclampsia, which induces high maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality, has been discussed in numerous papers. This disorder is indeed associated with an important oxidative stress in the placenta and maternal circulation. However, the most recent studies did not show a beneficial effect of vitamin E administration in this pathology.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that maternal intake of antioxidant vitamins is associated with maternal and cord plasma levels at delivery. Women were recruited in early pregnancy in Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and habitual diet during pregnancy was assessed by a food-frequency questionnaire mailed at 34 weeks gestation. Blood samples were taken at recruitment (n 1149) and maternal (n 1149) and cord blood samples (n 747) taken at delivery for analyses of vitamins A, C, E and beta-carotene. Maternal plasma levels of vitamin E and beta-carotene at delivery were significantly higher than levels in early pregnancy while levels of vitamins A and C were significantly lower. Positive correlations were observed for maternal levels of all the vitamins between early pregnancy and delivery. At delivery, maternal plasma concentrations of vitamins A, E and beta-carotene were significantly higher than cord levels, while maternal levels of vitamin C were significantly lower. There were significant correlations between maternal and cord plasma concentrations for beta-carotene and vitamin C but not for vitamins A or E. Maternal dietary intakes were positively correlated with maternal plasma levels of vitamins C, E and beta-carotene in early pregnancy, with maternal plasma levels of beta-carotene and vitamin C at delivery and with cord plasma levels of beta-carotene and vitamin C. The results from the present study show that, in this population, maternal diet influences cord plasma levels of beta-carotene and vitamin C, but not vitamins A and E.

Além da atuação dessa vitamina em diversos processos metabólicos, atualmente têm-se destacado o efeito antioxidante desempenhado principalmente pelas formas pró-vitamínicas (carotenóides). Essa função antioxidante da vitamina A é de grande importância no nascimento, período no qual o recém-nascido produz grande quantidade de radicais livres em resposta à exposição a elevadas concentrações de oxigênio. Devido às baixas reservas dessa vitamina, cuja transferência trans-placentária ocorre principalmente no terceiro trimestre de gestação e devido à imaturidade dos demais sistemas antioxidantes, os recém-nascidos prematuros são os mais vulneráveis aos efeitos do estresse decorrente do nascimento. No entanto, ainda existem controvérsias quanto aos benefícios da suplementação da vitamina A no período gestacional, com o objetivo de prevenir a deficiência de vitamina A e suas conseqüências. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo reunir artigos referentes ao tema e publicados em periódicos indexados nas bases de dados MEDLINE e LILACS, no período de 1990 e 2003.

Abstract
Beta-carotene (BC) and other carotenoids are mainly considered as belonging to the group of micronutrients. As they are contained in fruit and vegetables and thus part of human diet, a regular low-dose intake from natural sources is normally assured. In the last decade high-dose supplementation with synthetic carotenoids has been used successfully in the treatment of diseases believed to be associated with oxidative stress. However, in a few clinical studies harmful effects have been observed as well, e.g., a higher incidence of lung cancer after BC was given in high doses to smokers. Our studies aim at shedding light on the causal mechanisms of the known side effects that we have investigated. Possibilities of preventing them are discussed. Obviously, on certain conditions of high-dose carotenoid supplementation, both the antioxidant and prooxidant reactions may arise. Carotenoid breakdown products (CBP) including very reactive aldehydes and epoxides are formed during oxidative attack in the course of antioxidative action. Carotenoid breakdown products inhibit state 3 respiration of isolated rat liver mitochondria at concentrations between 0.5 and 20 microM. In vivo stimulated neutrophils might represent an important source for the generation of CBP, and the lung might be a critical organ in CBP formation. The inhibition of mitochondrial state 3 respiration by CBP is accompanied by a reduced content of protein sulfhydryl groups, decreasing glutathione levels and redox state, and also elevated accumulation of malondialdehyde. Changes in mitochondrial membrane potential favour functional deterioration of the adenine nucleotide translocator (ANT). The findings reflect a basic mechanism of the side effects of BC supplementation in circumstances of severe oxidative stress induced by CBP representing a class of lipid oxidation products. We are striving for safe conditions of carotenoid supplementation in order to protect patients in need of this kind of medical treatment from possible side effects, such as unwanted prooxidative reactions.

Abstract
The enzyme heme oxygenase (HO) has been implicated in several physiological functions throughout the body including control of vascular tone and regulation of the inflammatory and apoptotic cascades as well as contributing to the antioxidant capabilities in several organ systems. These various properties attributed to HO are carried out through the catalytic products of heme degradation, namely carbon monoxide (CO), biliverdin, and free iron (Fe2+). As the newly emerging roles of HO in normal organ function have come to light, researchers in several disciplines have assessed the role of this enzyme in various physiological and pathological changes taking place in the human body over a lifetime. Included in this new wave of interest is the involvement of HO, and its by-products, in the normal function of the vital organ of pregnancy, the placenta. In this review the role of HO, and its catalytic products, will be examined in the context of pregnancy. The different isoforms of the HO enzyme (HO-1, HO-2, HO-3) have been localized throughout placental tissue, and have been shown to be physiologically active. The HO protein and more specifically its catalytic by-products (CO, biliverdin, and Fe2+) have been postulated to be involved in the maintenance of uterine quiescence throughout gestation, regulation of hemodynamic control within the uterus and placenta, regulation of the apoptotic and inflammatory cascades in trophoblast cells, and the maintenance of a balance of the oxidant-antioxidant status within the placental tissues. The association between this enzyme system, and its above-noted roles throughout pregnancy, with the hypertensive disorder of pregnancy preeclampsia (PET), will also be examined. It is hypothesized that a decrease in HO expression and/or activity throughout gestation would be capable of initiating several pathological processes involved in the etiology of PET. This hypothesis has led to further discussion emphasizing the possibility of novel therapeutic designs targeting this enzyme system for the treatment of PET.

Abstract
The aim of our work was to evaluate changes in levels of oxidised low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) during pregnancy and how they correlate with changes in LDL size and serum total antioxidant status (TAS). LDL peak and mean particle diameter (LDL-PPD and LDL-MPD, respectively) and the relative proportion of 3 LDL subfractions were quantified. We evaluated plasma levels of Ox-LDL and serum levels of TAS, total cholesterol (Chol), triglycerides (TG), apolipoprotein A-I (apo A-I), apolipoprotein B (apo B), HDL-cholesterol (HDLc) and LDL-cholesterol (LDLc). A longitudinal study was performed in the three trimesters (T1-T3) of pregnancy in normal pregnant women (n = 23) and a non-pregnant group (n = 18) was used as control. TG levels were significantly elevated whereas LDL-MPD and LDL-PPD were significantly reduced in T1 compared to controls. Ox-LDL, TG, Chol, apo B and LDLc rose markedly throughout pregnancy with significant changes between each trimester; LDL-PPD, LDL-MPD and TAS levels decreased significantly from T1 to T3. Changes in LDL size and in Ox-LDL and TAS levels were more pronounced between T1 and T2 than between T2 and T3. HDLc and apo A-I reached peak concentration in T2 but decreased in T3. TG concentrations correlated inversely with LDL size and positively with Ox-LDL; Ox-LDL was positively and strongly correlated with LDLc. Moreover, relative changes in the levels of Ox-LDL correlated inversely with relative changes in LDL size and TAS between trimesters. In conclusion, during human gestation the change in LDL profile towards smaller species and the decrease in serum TAS are closely associated with increased levels of Ox-LDL. The exact physiological role of the increments in Ox-LDL during pregnancy remains to be clarified.

Abstract
PURPOSE Low serum concentrations of antioxidants may be associated with an increased risk of cancer. Based on the accumulated evidence, we hypothesized that retinoids would elevate serum alpha-tocopherol. This study was designed to determine whether 9-cis-retinoic acid (9-cis-RA), the most common chemopreventive agent, could alter serum alpha-tocopherol in former smokers. Because hyperlipidemia is a known side effect of retinoids, we also evaluated the association between serum alpha-tocopherol and lipids in the same population. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN Subjects who had stopped smoking at least 12 months before the study were randomly assigned to receive oral 9-cis-RA or placebo daily for 3 months. Clinical information and blood samples were obtained monthly; serum alpha-tocopherol concentrations were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography and lipid levels by enzymatic assays before treatment and every month during the treatment. RESULTS Of the 149 subjects in the study, 113 completed 3 months of treatment and provided samples for evaluation of serum alpha-tocopherol. Serum alpha-tocopherol levels in the 9-cis-RA group (n = 52) were higher after treatment (r = 0.445, P < 0.01) than before. The incidences of grade > or =2 hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia were higher in the 9-cis-RA group than in the placebo group (P = 0.0005 and P = 0.01, respectively), but there were no serious complications related to hyperlipidemia. CONCLUSIONS Treatment of former smokers with 9-cis-RA significantly increased their serum alpha-tocopherol levels, and this could be a benefit. In addition, serum alpha-tocopherol could serve as a biomarker for 9-cis-RA treatment.

Abstract
OBJECT The object was to assess oxidizability of apolipoprotein B-containing lipoproteins, levels of lipid peroxidation products and antioxidants in normal pregnancy. METHOD Serum malondialdehyde, vitamin E, carotenoids, albumin, uric acid, bilirubin, triglyceride, total cholesterol levels and in vitro copper-induced oxidation of apolipoprotein B-containing lipoproteins were investigated in 21 healthy pregnant and 22 nonpregnant women. Mann-Whitney U test was used for the statistical analyses. RESULTS Serum malondialdehyde, vitamin E, triglyceride and total cholesterol levels were significantly higher; albumin and uric acid levels and vitamin E/triglyceride + total cholesterol and carotenoids/triglyceride + total cholesterol ratios were significantly lower in the pregnant group. Basal malondialdehyde concentrations of apolipoprotein B-containing lipoprotein fraction and Delta-malondialdehyde values determined at 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180th minutes of incubation were significantly lower in the pregnant group compared to those in the non-pregnant group. CONCLUSION Although greater lipid peroxidation product levels reflect an enhanced lipid peroxidation status in normal pregnancy, apolipoprotein B-containing lipoprotein fraction of normal pregnant women compared with the nonpregnant subjects seems to be protected from oxidation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inuit women from Northern Québec have been shown to consume inadequate quantities of vitamin A. This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of blood vitamin A deficiency in newborns from 3 distinct populations of the province of Québec. METHODS 594 newborns were included in this study (375 Inuit newborns from northern Québec (Nunavik), 107 Caucasian and Native newborns from the Lower Northern Shore of the Saint-Lawrence River (LNS) and 112 newborns from Southern Québec where clinical vitamin A deficiency is uncommon). Mothers were recruited at delivery and vitamin A (retinol) was analyzed from umbilical cord blood samples by reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography. RESULTS Nunavik and LNS newborns had significantly lower mean vitamin A concentrations in cord blood compared to Southern Québec participants (15.7 microg/dL, 16.8 microg/dL and 20.4 microg/dL respectively). The differences observed were similar when adjusted for sex and birthweight. Results also showed that 8.5% of Nunavik newborns and 12.2% of LNS newborns were below 10.0 microg/dL, a level thought to be indicative of blood vitamin A deficiency in neonates. CONCLUSION These data suggest that a carefully planned vitamin A supplementation program during pregnancy in Nunavik and LNS might be indicated to promote healthy infant development.

Abstract
Concentrations of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, were measured in milk and serum of 18 grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) mothers and in the serum of their pups sampled up to 6 times between parturition and weaning on the Isle of May, Scotland, in 1998 and 2000. The vitamin E concentration in colostrum (89.4 ± 22.5 mg/kg milk; mean ± SD) was 4.5 times greater than that in later milk (20.9 ± 5.0 mg/kg milk). It then remained constant until the end of lactation. The decline in concentration of vitamin E in grey seal milk corresponded to a drop in the vitamin E concentration in mothers' serum between parturition (14.0 ± 4.8 mg/L serum) and the second half of the lactation period during which the serum vitamin E concentration remained stable (9.6 ± 3.2 mg/L serum). Circulating vitamin E concentrations varied significantly among mothers but there was no relationship with mother's age. Despite these differences between mothers, individuals produced milk with very similar vitamin E concentrations. The vitamin E concentration in grey seal pups' serum was low at birth (lowest concentration 3.1 mg/L serum) but increased sharply to a peak around days 13 (31.2 ± 5.2 mg/L serum). It then fell, before stabilizing until the end of lactation (21.1 ± 4.5 mg/L serum), reflecting the changes reported in the milk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the postnatal changes in the plasma concentrations of fat soluble antioxidant vitamins and malondialdehyde (MDA) in mothers and their newborns and their relation to smoking. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING Tertiary perinatal centre. SUBJECTS Eighteen non-smoking and 14 smoking mothers and 33 infants. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Plasma concentrations of vitamins E, A, and beta-carotene and MDA were measured in mothers and infants at delivery and on day 4 post partum. RESULTS Neonatal plasma levels of vitamins E, A, and beta-carotene were significantly lower than maternal levels both at delivery and on day 4 in both groups. There was a significant postnatal increase in plasma vitamin E levels in smoking mothers and neonates of both groups. A significant postnatal increase in maternal, but not neonatal, plasma vitamin A was noted in both groups. Cord plasma vitamin E levels were significantly lower in infants of smoking mothers (mean 4.7 v 6.5 micromol/l, p = 0.041). Plasma MDA was paradoxically lower in smoking mothers at delivery (3.19 v 4.01 micromol/l, p = 0.03) and on day 4 (1.37 v 3.29 micromol/l, p = 0.005) and in infants of the smoking group on day 4 (2.18 v 3.12 micromol/l, p = 0.014). Also, there was a significant postnatal fall in plasma MDA levels on day 4 in mothers and infants in the smoking group. CONCLUSIONS The postnatal changes in plasma vitamin E were more pronounced in the smoking group. The postnatal changes in plasma vitamins A and beta-carotene were similar in both groups. The rapid decline in plasma MDA in smoking mothers and their infants suggests withdrawal of oxidative stress from smoking around delivery. This coincided with the increase in plasma vitamin E.

Abstract
In 24 healthy pregnant women, parameters related to the oxidative stability of low density lipoproteins (LDL) were determined at three times during pregnancy and shortly after delivery. The fatty acid composition of plasma phospholipids (PL) and the plasma concentrations of vitamin E, vitamin A, and beta-carotene were assessed in the same samples. Total triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol concentrations were also determined. The length of the lag phase of isolated LDL challenged with Cu2+ ions significantly increased with the progression of pregnancy. The oxidation rate and the amount of conjugated dienes formed increased and reached a maximum at 29-37 wk of pregnancy. Total TG, cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol reached a maximum in the third trimester of pregnancy. beta-Carotene remained stable, vitamin A decreased, and vitamin E significantly increased throughout pregnancy. Vitamin E plasma concentration correlated positively with the length of the lag phase. The increased levels of vitamin E could contribute to the higher resistance of LDL toward oxidation with progressing gestation, measured by the prolonged lag phase. Furthermore, vitamin E plasma levels correlated positively with TG concentration but not with LDL-cholesterol. The level of polyunsaturated fatty acids in PL decreased with the progression of pregnancy. No correlation was found between the fatty acid composition of plasma PL, nor with the cholesterol concentration, and the parameters studied related to the oxidative stability of LDL. The major finding of this study is the increased oxidative resistance of LDL with progressing gestation.
