Toward the Targeted Design of Molecular Ferroelectrics: Modifying Molecular Symmetries and Homochirality

Tadpole-Like Polar Molecule Encapsulated in a Two-in-One Supramolecular Cage: Molecular Motion, Phase Transition and Ferroelectricity

Molecule-inclusive closed cage compounds present a unique platform for molecular motion in an isolated environment. This study showcases the incorporation of a tadpole-like polar molecule (1-propyl-1H-imidazole, PIm) into a supramolecular cage formed by duad semicage p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene. The ferroelectric phase transition as well as the cage-confined motion of encapsulated PIm was studied in detail. The unusual quadrastable state of the PIm in the paraelectric phase allows for the modulation of dipolar polarization over a broad temperature/frequency range. This compound represents the first example of a clathrate molecular ferroelectric featuring a molecule-inclusive supramolecular cage, and it also contributes to the understanding of cage-confined molecular dynamics.

Electrically Induced Crystal Field Distortion in a Ferroelectric Perovskite Revealed by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance

The magnetoelectric material has attracted multidisciplinary interest in the past decade for its potential to accommodate various functions. Especially, the external electric field can drive the quantum behaviors of such materials via the spin-electric coupling effect, with the advantages of high spatial resolution and low energy cost. In this work, the spin-electric coupling effect of Mn2+-doped ferroelectric organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite [(CH3)3NCH2Cl]CdCl3 with a large piezoelectric effect was investigated. The electric field manipulation efficiency for the allowed transitions was determined by the pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance. The orientation-included Hamiltonian of the spin-electric coupling effect was obtained via simulating the angle-dependent electric field modulated continuous-wave electron paramagnetic resonance. The results demonstrate that the applied electric field affects not only the principal values of the zero-field splitting tensor but also its principal axis directions. This work proposes and exemplifies a route to understand the spin-electric coupling effect originating from the crystal field imposed on a spin ion being modified by the applied electric field, which may guide the rational screening and designing of hybrid perovskite ferroelectrics that satisfy the efficiency requirement of electric field manipulation of spins in quantum information applications.

New-Generation Ferroelectric AlScN Materials

Ferroelectrics have great potential in the field of nonvolatile memory due to programmable polarization states by external electric field in nonvolatile manner. However, complementary metal oxide semiconductor compatibility and uniformity of ferroelectric performance after size scaling have always been two thorny issues hindering practical application of ferroelectric memory devices. The emerging ferroelectricity of wurtzite structure nitride offers opportunities to circumvent the dilemma. This review covers the mechanism of ferroelectricity and domain dynamics in ferroelectric AlScN films. The performance optimization of AlScN films grown by different techniques is summarized and their applications for memories and emerging in-memory computing are illustrated. Finally, the challenges and perspectives regarding the commercial avenue of ferroelectric AlScN are discussed.

The past 10 years of molecular ferroelectrics: structures, design, and properties

Ferroelectricity, which has diverse important applications such as memory elements, capacitors, and sensors, was first discovered in a molecular compound, Rochelle salt, in 1920 by Valasek. Owing to their superiorities of lightweight, biocompatibility, structural tunability, mechanical flexibility, etc., the past decade has witnessed the renaissance of molecular ferroelectrics as promising complementary materials to commercial inorganic ferroelectrics. Thus, on the 100th anniversary of ferroelectricity, it is an opportune time to look into the future, specifically into how to push the boundaries of material design in molecular ferroelectric systems and finally overcome the hurdles to their commercialization. Herein, we present a comprehensive and accessible review of the appealing development of molecular ferroelectrics over the past 10 years, with an emphasis on their structural diversity, chemical design, exceptional properties, and potential applications. We believe that it will inspire intense, combined research efforts to enrich the family of high-performance molecular ferroelectrics and attract widespread interest from physicists and chemists to better understand the structure-function relationships governing improved applied functional device engineering.

High-performance Pyroelectric Property Accompanied by Spin Crossover in a Single Crystal of Fe(II) Complex

Pyroelectric materials hold significant potential for energy harvesting, sensing, and imaging applications. However, achieving high-performance pyroelectricity across a wide temperature range near room temperature remains a significant challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a single crystal of Fe(II) spin-crossover compound shows remarkable pyroelectric properties accompanied by a thermally controlled spin transition. In this material, the uniaxial alignment of polar molecules results in a polarization of the lattice. As the molecular geometry is modulated during a gradual spin transition, the polar axis experiences a colossal thermal expansion with a coefficient of 796×10-6 K-1. Consequently, the material's polarization undergoes significant modulation as a secondary pyroelectric effect. The considerable shift in polarization (pyroelectric coefficient, p=3.7-22 nC K-1cm-2), coupled with a low dielectric constant (ϵ'=4.4-5.4) over a remarkably wide temperature range of 298 to 400 K, suggests this material is a high-performance pyroelectric. The demonstration of pyroelectricity combined with magnetic switching in this study will inspire further investigations in the field of molecular electronics and magnetism.

Molecular orbital breaking in photo-mediated organosilicon Schiff base ferroelectric crystals

Ferroelectric materials, whose electrical polarization can be switched under external stimuli, have been widely used in sensors, data storage, and energy conversion. Molecular orbital breaking can result in switchable structural and physical bistability in ferroelectric materials as traditional spatial symmetry breaking does. Differently, molecular orbital breaking interprets the phase transition mechanism from the perspective of electronics and sheds new light on manipulating the physical properties of ferroelectrics. Here, we synthesize a pair of organosilicon Schiff base ferroelectric crystals, (R)- and (S)-N-(3,5-di-tert-butylbenzylidene)-1-((triphenylsilyl)oxy)ethanamine, which show optically controlled phase transition accompanying the molecular orbital breaking. The molecular orbital breaking is manifested as the breaking and reformation of covalent bonds during the phase transition process, that is, the conversion between C = N and C-O in the enol form and C-N and C = O in the keto form. This process brings about photo-mediated bistability with multiple physical channels such as dielectric, second-harmonic generation, and ferroelectric polarization. This work further explores this newly developed mechanism of ferroelectric phase transition and highlights the significance of photo-mediated ferroelectric materials for photo-controlled smart devices and bio-sensors.

Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite Ferroelectric Nanosheets Synthesized by a Room-Temperature Antisolvent Method

Over the past years, the application potential of ferroelectric nanomaterials with unique physical properties for modern electronics is highlighted to a large extent. However, it is relatively challenging to fabricate inorganic ferroelectric nanomaterials, which is a process depending on a vacuum atmosphere at high temperatures. As significant complements to inorganic ferroelectric nanomaterials, the nanomaterials of molecular ferroelectrics are rarely reported. Here a low-cost room-temperature antisolvent method is used to synthesize free-standing 2D organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite (OIHP) ferroelectric nanosheets (NSs), that is, (CHA)2PbBr4 NSs (CHA = cyclohexylammonium), with an average lateral size of 357.59 nm and a thickness ranging from 10 to 70 nm. This method shows high repeatability and produces NSs with excellent crystallinity. Moreover, ferroelectric domains in single NSs can be clearly visualized and manipulated using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). The domain switching and PFM-switching spectroscopy indicate the robust in-plane ferroelectricity of the NSs. This work not only introduces a feasible, low-cost, and scalable method for preparing molecular ferroelectric NSs but also promotes the research on molecular ferroelectric nanomaterials.

Highly Stable MOF-Type Lead Halide Luminescent Ferroelectrics

Lead halide molecular ferroelectrics represent an important class of luminescent ferroelectrics, distinguished by their high chemical and structural tunability, excellent processability and distinctive luminescent characteristics. However, their inherent instability, prone to decomposition upon exposure to moisture and light, hinders their broader ferroelectric applications. Herein, for the first time, we present a series of isoreticular metal-organic framework (MOF)-type lead halide luminescent ferroelectrics, demonstrating exceptional robustness under ambient conditions for at least 15 months and even when subjected to aqueous boiling conditions. Unlike conventional metal-oxo secondary building units (SBUs) in MOFs adopting highly centrosymmetric structure with limited structural distortion, our lead halide-based MOFs occupy structurally deformable [Pb2X]+ (X=Cl-/Br-/I-) SBUs that facilitate a c-axis-biased displacement of Pb2+ centers and substantially contribute to thermoinducible structural transformation. Importantly, this class of MOF-type lead halide ferroelectrics undergo ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transitions with remarkably high Curie temperature of up to 505 K, superior to most of molecular ferroelectrics. Moreover, the covalent bonding between phosphorescent organic component and the light-harvesting inorganic component achieves efficient spin-orbit coupling and intersystem crossing, resulting in long-lived afterglow emission. The compelling combination of high stability, ferroelectricity and afterglow emission exhibited by lead halide MOFs opens up many potential opportunities in energy-conversion applications.

Plastic phase transitions in tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane perchlorate

Organic crystal materials with metal-free feature and intrinsically low molecular mass are highly desirable for applications in flexible smart devices. Here, we reported a plastic crystal, tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane perchlorate (Tris-HClO4), which crystallizes in the R3̄ space group at room temperature and undergoes plastic phase transition at 369 K, showing a large entropy gain of 70.5 J mol-1 K-1, much higher than its fusion entropy gain (12.9 J mol-1 K-1). PXRD measurement indicates that it has cubic lattice symmetry in the high-temperature phase. Moreover, it exhibits excellent dielectric permittivity switching properties and robust cyclic stability. This work could be the pathway for chemical designing multifunctional switchable materials with the motive of combining the idea of symmetry breaking and plastic phase transition.

Polar Crystals Using Molecular Chirality: Pseudosymmetric Crystallization toward Polarization Switching Materials

Polar compounds with switchable polarization properties are applicable in various devices such as ferroelectric memory and pyroelectric sensors. However, a strategy to prepare polar compounds has not been established. We report a rational synthesis of a polar CoGa crystal using chiral cth ligands (SS-cth and RR-cth, cth = 5,7,7,12,14,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane). Both the original homo metal Co crystal and Ga crystal exhibit a centrosymmetric isostructure, where the dipole moment of metal complexes with the SS-cth ligand and those with the RR-cth ligand are canceled out. To obtain a polar compound, the Co valence tautomeric complex with SS-cth in the homo metal Co crystal is replaced with the Ga complex with SS-cth by mixing Co valence tautomeric complexes with RR-cth and Ga complexes with SS-cth. The CoGa crystal exhibits polarization switching between the pseudononpolar state at a low temperature and the polar state at a high temperature because only Co complexes exhibit changes in electric dipole moment due to metal-to-ligand charge transfer. Following the same strategy, the polarization-switchable CoZn complex was synthesized. The CoZn crystal exhibits polarization switching between the polar state at a low temperature and the pseudononpolar state at a high temperature, which is the opposite temperature dependence to that of the CoGa crystal. These results revealed that the polar crystal can be synthesized by design, using a chiral ligand. Moreover, our method allows for the control of temperature-dependent polarization changes, which contrasts with typical ferroelectric compounds, in which the polar ferroelectric phase typically occurs at low temperatures.

Centrosymmetry-Breaking Morphotropic Phase Boundary: A Pathway to Highly Sensitive and Strong Pressure-Responsive Nonlinear Optical Switches

The quest for high-performance piezoelectric materials has been synonymous with the pursuit of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), yet the full potential of MPBs remains largely untapped outside of the realm of ferroelectrics. In this study, we reveal a new class of MPB by creating continuous molecular-based solid solutions between centro- and noncentrosymmetric compounds, exemplified by (tert-butylammonium)1-x(tert-amylammonium)xFeCl4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1), where the MPB is formed due to disorder of molecular cations. Near the MPB, we discovered an exceptionally sensitive nonlinear optical material in the centrosymmetric phase, capable of activation at pressures as low as 0.12-0.27 GPa, and producing tunable second-harmonic generation (SHG) signals from zero to 18.8 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP). Meanwhile, synchrotron diffraction experiments have unveiled a third competing phase (P212121) appearing at low pressure, forming a triple-phase point near the MPB, thereby providing insight into the mechanism underpinning the nonlinear optical (NLO) switch behavior. These findings highlight the opportunity to harness exceptional physical properties in symmetry-breaking solid solution systems by strategically designing novel MPBs.

Ferroics in Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskites: Fundamentals, Design Strategies, and Implementation

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) afford highly versatile structure design and lattice dimensionalities; thus, they are actively researched as material platforms for the tailoring of ferroic behaviors. Unlike single-phase organic or inorganic materials, the interlayer coupling between organic and inorganic components in HOIPs allows the modification of strain and symmetry by chirality transfer or lattice distortion, thereby enabling the coexistence of ferroic orders. This review focuses on the principles for engineering one or multiple ferroic orders in HOIPs, and the conditions for achieving multiferroicity and magnetoelectric properties. The prospects of multilevel ferroic modulation, chiral spin textures, and spin orbitronics in HOIPs are also presented.

Organic-Inorganic Rare-Earth Double Perovskite Ferroelectric with Large Piezoelectric Response and Ferroelasticity for Flexible Composite Energy Harvesters

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite (HOIP) ferroelectric materials have great potential for developing self-powered electronic transducers owing to their impressive piezoelectric performance, structural tunability and low processing temperatures. Nevertheless, their inherent brittle and low elastic moduli limit their application in electromechanical conversion. Integration of HOIP ferroelectrics and soft polymers is a promising solution. In this work, a hybrid organic-inorganic rare-earth double perovskite ferroelectric, [RM3HQ]2RbPr(NO3)6 (RM3HQ = (R)-N-methyl-3-hydroxylquinuclidinium) is presented, which possesses multiaxial nature, ferroelasticity and satisfactory piezoelectric properties, including piezoelectric charge coefficient (d33) of 102.3 pC N-1 and piezoelectric voltage coefficient (g33) of 680 × 10-3 V m N-1. The piezoelectric generators (PEG) based on composite films of [RM3HQ]2RbPr(NO3)6@polyurethane (PU) can generate an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 30 V and short-circuit current (Isc) of 18 µA, representing one of the state-of-the-art PEGs to date. This work has promoted the exploration of new HOIP ferroelectrics and their development of applications in electromechanical conversion devices.

Field-Induced Antiferroelectric-Ferroelectric Transformation in Organometallic Perovskite Displaying Giant Negative Electrocaloric Effect

Antiferroelectric materials with an electrocaloric effect (ECE) have been developed as promising candidates for solid-state refrigeration. Despite the great advances in positive ECE, reports on negative ECE remain quite scarce because of its elusive physical mechanism. Here, a giant negative ECE (maximum ΔS ∼ -33.3 J kg-1 K-1 with ΔT ∼ -11.7 K) is demonstrated near room temperature in organometallic perovskite, iBA2EA2Pb3I10 (1, where iBA = isobutylammonium and EA = ethylammonium), which is comparable to the greatest ECE effects reported so far. Moreover, the ECE efficiency ΔS/ΔE (∼1.85 J cm kg-1 K-1 kV-1) and ΔT/ΔE (∼0.65 K cm kV-1) are almost 2 orders of magnitude higher than those of classical inorganic ceramic ferroelectrics and organic polymers, such as BaTiO3, SrBi2Ta2O9, Hf1/2Zr1/2O2, and P(VDF-TrFE). As far as we know, this is the first report on negative ECE in organometallic hybrid perovskite ferroelectric. Our experimental measurement combined with the first-principles calculations reveals that electric field-induced antipolar to polar structural transformation results in a large change in dipolar ordering (from 6.5 to 45 μC/cm2 under the ΔE of 18 kV/cm) that is closely related to the entropy change, which plays a key role in generating such giant negative ECE. This discovery of field-induced negative ECE is unprecedented in organometallic perovskite, which sheds light on the exploration of next-generation refrigeration devices with high cooling efficiency.

Chiral-Achiral Cations Intercalation Induced Lead-Free Chiral-Polar Hybrid Perovskites Enable Self-Powered X-Ray and Ultraviolet-Visible-Near-Infrared Photo Detection

Lead halide hybrid perovskites have made great progress in direct X-ray detection and broadband photodetection, but the existence of toxic Pb and the demand for external operating voltage have severely limited their further applications and operational stability improvements. Therefore, exploring "green" lead-free hybrid perovskite that can both achieve X-ray detection and broadband photodetection without external voltage is of great importance, but remains severely challenging. Herein, using centrosymmetric (BZA)3BiI6 (1, BZA = benzylamine) as a template, a pair of chiral-polar lead-free perovskites, (BZA)2(R/S-PPA)BiI6 (2-R/S, R/S-PPA = (R/S)-1-Phenylpropylamine) are successfully obtained by introducing chiral aryl cations of (R/S)-1-Phenylpropylamine. Compared to 1, chiral-polar 2-R presents a significant irradiation-responsive bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) with an open circuit photovoltage of 0.4 V, which enables it with self-powered X-ray, UV-vis-NIR broadband photodetection. Specifically, 2-R device exhibits an ultralow detection limit of 18.5 nGy s-1 and excellent operational stability. Furthermore, 2-R as the first lead-free perovskite achieves significant broad-spectrum (377-940 nm) photodetection via light-induced pyroelectric effect. This work sheds light on the rational crystal reconstruction engineering and design of "green" hybrid perovskite toward high-demanded self-powered radiation detection and broadband photodetection.

Large Enhancement of Polarization in a Layered Hybrid Perovskite Ferroelectric Semiconductor via Molecular Engineering

Switchable spontaneous polarization is the vital property of ferroelectrics, which leads to other key physical properties such as piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, and nonlinear optical effects, etc. Recently, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites with 2D layered structure have become an emerging branch of ferroelectric materials. However, most of the 2D hybrid ferroelectrics own relatively low polarizations (<15 µC cm-2 ). Here, a strategy to enhance the polarization of these hybrid perovskites by using ortho-, meta-, para-halogen substitution is developed. Based on (benzylammonium)2 PbCl4 (BZACL), the para-chlorine substituted (4-chlorobenzylammonium)2 PbCl4 (4-CBZACL) ferroelectric semiconductor shows a large spontaneous polarization (23.3 µC cm-2 ), which is 79% larger than the polarization of BZACL. This large enhancement of polarization is successfully explained via ab initio calculations. The study provides a convenient and efficient strategy to promote the ferroelectric property in the hybrid perovskite family.

Ferroelectricity and Related Properties of Nitratecadmate(II) Hybrid with Metal-Vacancy

All crystals are not ideal, and many of their properties are often determined not by the regular arrangement of atoms, but by the irregular arrangement of crystal defects. Many properties of materials can be controlled effectively by proper use of solid defects. By substitution of NH4 + ion of a hexagonal perovskite structure (H2 dabco)(NH4 )(NO3 )3 (dabco=1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, 1) with Cd2+ ion, we obtained a new metal-vacancy compound (H2 dabco)2 Cd(H2 O)2 (NO3 )6 (2). It exhibits a ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition at 261 K. A comparison of the various-temperature single-crystal structures indicates that the coordination twist of Cd2+ ion leads to instability of the lattices and excellent ferroelectricity. These findings reveal that the vacancy can be utilized as an element to produce ferroelectricity and may start the chemistry of metal-vacancy coordination compounds. These findings reveals that the vacancy can be utilized as an effective means to tune the symmetry and produce ferroelectricity.

Ferroelectric-Optoelectronic Hybrid System for Photodetection

Photodetectors (PDs), as functional devices based on photon-to-electron conversion, are an indispensable component for the next-generation Internet of Things system. The research of advanced and efficient PDs that meet the diverse demands is becoming a major task. Ferroelectric materials can develop a unique spontaneous polarization due to the symmetry-breaking of the unit cell, which is switchable under an external electric field. Ferroelectric polarization field has the intrinsic characteristics of non-volatilization and rewritability. Introducing ferroelectrics to effectively manipulate the band bending and carrier transport can be non-destructive and controllable in the ferroelectric-optoelectronic hybrid systems. Hence, ferroelectric integration offers a promising strategy for high-performance photoelectric detection. This paper reviews the fundamentals of optoelectronic and ferroelectric materials, and their interactions in hybrid photodetection systems. The first section introduces the characteristics and applications of typical optoelectronic and ferroelectric materials. Then, the interplay mechanisms, modulation effects, and typical device structures of ferroelectric-optoelectronic hybrid systems are discussed. Finally, in summary and perspective section, the progress of ferroelectrics integrated PDs is summed up and the challenges of ferroelectrics in the field of optoelectronics are considered.

Deciphering the anisotropic energy harvesting responses of an above room temperature molecular ferroelectric copper(II) complex single crystal

The mechanical/piezoelectric and/or thermal/pyroelectric energy harvesting efficiency is observed to be extremely good in multi-component ferroelectric inorganic oxides in their single-crystal form rather than in their polycrystalline counterparts (pellets and thick/thin films). However, growing such multi-component single crystals is a challenging and cost-intensive process besides the difficulty in tuning their long-range ferroic ordering and the involvement of toxic heavy elements. Instead, discrete inorganic metal complexes can be potential alternatives for which one can overcome these caveats by an appropriate design strategy. Herein, we report a biocompatible and an above room temperature (Tc > 380 K) molecular ferroelectric [Cu2(L-phe)2(bpy)2(H2O)](ClO4)2·2H2O single crystal (1) with profound anisotropic piezo- and pyro-electric responses along different unit cell axes. Energy harvesting data at room temperature reveal that the highest possibility of scavenging mechanical energy (∼30 μW m-2) is preferentially along the b-axis. This is attributed to the large spontaneous polarization (Ps = 2.5 μC cm-2) and piezoelectric coefficient (d33 = 23.5 pm V-1) observed along the b-axis, compared to those along the other two axes. The highest output voltage (7.4 V cm-2) and pyroelectric coefficient (29 μC m-2 K-1) obtained for the single-crystal device are impressively higher than those of most of the reported materials. Such a molecular anisotropic single-crystal piezo-/pyro-electric nanogenerator (SC-PENG) with excellent mechanical and thermal energy harvesting competence is reported for the first time.

A Metal-Free Molecular Ferroelectric [4-Me-cyclohexylamine]ClO4 Introduced by Boat and Chair Conformations of Cyclohexylamine

Organic ferroelectrics have received a great deal of interest due to their exclusive properties. However, organic ferroelectrics have not been fully explored, which hinders their practical application. Here, we presented a novel metal-free organic molecular ferroelectric [4-MCHA][ClO4 ] (1) (4-MCHA=trans-4-methylcyclohexylamine), which exhibits an above-room-temperature of 328 K. Strikingly, the single crystal structure analysis of 1 shows that the driving force of phase transition is related to the interesting chair-boat conformation change of 4-MCHA cation, in addition to the order-disorder transition of ClO4 - anion. Using piezoelectric response force microscopy (PFM), the presence of domains and the implemented polarization switching were clearly observed, which explicitly determined the presence of room-temperature ferroelectricity of 1. As far as we know, the ferroelectric phase transition mechanism attributed to the conformational change in a trans isomeric cation is very rare. This research enriched the path of designing ferroelectric materials and smart materials.

A Homochiral Fulgide Organic Ferroelectric Crystal with Photoinduced Molecular Orbital Breaking

Thermally triggered spatial symmetry breaking in traditional ferroelectrics has been extensively studied for manipulation of the ferroelectricity. However, photoinduced molecular orbital breaking, which is promising for optical control of ferroelectric polarization, has been rarely explored. Herein, for the first time, we synthesized a homochiral fulgide organic ferroelectric crystal (E)-(R)-3-methyl-3-cyclohexylidene-4-(diphenylmethylene)dihydro-2,5-furandione (1), which exhibits both ferroelectricity and photoisomerization. Significantly, 1 shows a photoinduced reversible change in its molecular orbitals from the 3 π molecular orbitals in the open-ring isomer to 2 π and 1 σ molecular orbitals in the closed-ring isomer, which enables reversible ferroelectric domain switching by optical manipulation. To our knowledge, this is the first report revealing the manipulation of ferroelectric polarization in homochiral ferroelectric crystal by photoinduced breaking of molecular orbitals. This finding sheds light on the exploration of molecular orbital breaking in ferroelectrics for optical manipulation of ferroelectricity.

Dual Breaking of Molecular Orbitals and Spatial Symmetry in an Optically Controlled Ferroelectric

As particles carry quantified energy, photon radiation enables orbital transitions of energy levels, leading to changes in the spin state of electrons. The resulting switchable structural bistability may bring a new paradigm for manipulating ferroelectric polarization. However, the studies on molecular orbital breaking in the ferroelectric field remain blank. Here, for the first time, a new mechanism of ferroelectrics-dual breaking of molecular orbitals and spatial symmetry, demonstrated in a photochromic organic crystal with light-induced polarization switching, is formally proposed. By alternating the ultraviolet/visible light irradiation, the states of electron spin and the radial distribution p atomic orbitals experience a change, showing a reversible switch from "shoulder-to-shoulder" form to a "head-to-head" form. This reflects a reversible conversion between π and σ bonds, which induces and couples with the variation of spatial symmetry. The intersection of spatial symmetry breaking and molecular orbital breaking in ferroelectrics present in this work will be more conducive to data encryption and anticounterfeiting.

Design and Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting Properties of a Ferroelectric Cyclophosphazene Salt

Cyclophosphazenes offer a robust and easily modifiable platform for a diverse range of functional systems that have found applications in a wide variety of areas. Herein, for the first time, it reports an organophosphazene-based supramolecular ferroelectric [(PhCH2 NH)6 P3 N3 Me]I, [PMe]I. The compound crystallizes in the polar space group Pc and its thin-film sample exhibits remnant polarization of 5 µC cm-2 . Vector piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) measurements indicated the presence of multiaxial polarization. Subsequently, flexible composites of [PMe]I are fabricated for piezoelectric energy harvesting applications using thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) as the matrix. The highest open-circuit voltages of 13.7 V and the maximum power density of 34.60 µW cm-2 are recorded for the poled 20 wt.% [PMe]I/TPU device. To understand the molecular origins of the high performance of [PMe]I-based mechanical energy harvesting devices, piezoelectric charge tensor values are obtained from DFT calculations of the single crystal structure. These indicate that the mechanical stress-induced distortions in the [PMe]I crystals are facilitated by the high flexibility of the layered supramolecular assembly.

Zero-Dimensional Sn-Based Enantiomeric Phase-Transition Materials with High-Tc and Dielectric Switching

The combination of chirality and phase-transition materials has broad application prospects. Therefore, based on the quasi-spherical theory and the thought strategy of introducing chirality, we have successfully synthesized a pair of chiral enantiomeric ligands (R/S)-triethyl-(2-hydroxypropyl)ammonium iodide, which can be combined with a tin hexachloride anion to obtain a pair of new organic-inorganic hybrid enantiomeric high-temperature plastic phase-transition materials: (R/S)-[CH3 CH(OH)CH2 N(CH2 CH3 )3 ]2 SnCl6 (1-R/1-S), which have a high temperature phase transition of Tc =384 K, crystallize in the P21 chiral space group at room temperature, and have obvious CD signals. In addition, compounds 1-R and 1-S have a good low-loss dielectric switch and broadband gap. This work is conducive to the research into chiral high-temperature reversible plastic phase-transition materials, and promotes the development of multi-functional phase-transition materials.

Organic radical ferroelectric crystals with martensitic phase transition

Organic martensitic compounds are an emerging type of smart material with intriguing physical properties including thermosalient effect, ferroelasticity, and shape memory effect. However, due to the high structural symmetry and limited design theories for these materials, the combination of ferroelectricity and martensitic transformation has rarely been found in organic systems. Here, based on the chemical design strategies for molecular ferroelectrics, we show a series of asymmetric 1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide derivatives with the homochiral amine and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl components, which adopt the low-symmetric polar structure and so allow ferroelectricity. Upon H/F substitution, the fluorinated compounds exhibit reversible ferroelectric and martensitic transitions at 399 K accompanied by a large thermal hysteresis of 132 K. This large thermal hysteresis with two competing (meta)-stable phases is further confirmed by density functional theory calculations. The rare combination of martensitic phase transition and ferroelectricity realizes the bistability with two different ferroelectric phases at room temperature. Our finding provides insight into the exploration of martensitic ferroelectric compounds with potential applications in switchable memory devices, soft robotics, and smart actuators.

Temperature-Tuned Variable Confined Space for Modulating Dipolar Polarization of a Disc-Shaped Ammonium Ion

Free accessible confined space and loose interaction are crucial for most solid-state ionic motions. Here, by using a near-spherical anion and a disc-shaped ammonium as two distinct but rigid building blocks, we report a new ionic crystal, (HMIm)3[La(NO3)6] (HMIm = 1-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium), in which the different confined spaces of three (HMIm)+ ions are fine-tuned over a broad temperature range. This effect can be utilized to modulate the dipolar polarization across a wide temperature/frequency range. Additionally, small-scale substitution of (HMIm)+ by its isomer of almost identical shape/size affords molecular solid solutions, which can further tune the dipolar polarization by varying the doping ratio. It is revealed that the differences in dipole moment and hydrogen bond rather than that of shape/size lead to a distorted crystalline environment for these solid solutions. Overall, we provide an exceptional model for understanding and regulating the dipole motion of polar aromatic molecules/ions in a crystalline environment.

Large Phase-Transition Temperature Enhancement Achieved in a Layered Lead Iodide Hybrid Crystal by H/F Substitution

Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides with structural flexibility and solution processability have been widely investigated for different application scenarios. However, the effective construction of phase-transition materials with a high phase-transition temperature (Ttr) for potential practical applications remains a great challenge, and reports on the regulation of Ttr with significant enhancement have been rare. In this manuscript, we have realized a large Ttr increase of 148 K in a layered hybrid lead iodide crystal (4-FTMBA)4Pb3I10 (4-FTMBA = 4-fluoro-N,N,N-trimethylbenzenaminium) by the H/F substitution strategy. Compared to the parent (TMBA)4Pb3I10 (TMBA = N,N,N-trimethylbenzenaminium), H/F substitution preserves the structural framework and crystal symmetry in (4-FTMBA)4Pb3I10. The introduction of heavier fluorine will significantly increase the motion barrier for the order-disorder transition, resulting in the remarkably improved Ttr. Temperature-dependent crystal structures, Raman spectra, and dielectric analyses well support the phase-transition behavior. In addition, evident thermochromism with a tunable direct band gap in (4-FTMBA)4Pb3I10 has been observed using UV-vis spectra. To the best of our knowledge, the achieved Ttr enhancement of 148 K by H/F substitution is the highest among the organic-inorganic hybrid lead halide phase-transition materials. This finding would greatly inspire the rational design of functional materials with high performance.

Targeted regulation and optimization of multifunctional phase transition materials by novel void occupancy engineering

As an innovative form of stimulus-response materials, organic-inorganic hybrid phase transition materials have become a wonderful contender in the field of functional electronic equipment due to their versatile structure, intensive functions and straightforward preparation. However, the targeted regulation and optimization of the electrical/optical response, along with the establishment of regular structure-performance relationships, pose significant challenges in meeting the diverse demands of practical applications over an extended period. Herein, we conducted a systematic investigation into the role of lattice void occupancy in regulating phase transition temperature (Tp) and related optical/electrical bistability. By taking hybrid material [TMEA][Cd(SCN)3] featuring a flexible ammonium cation [TMEA]+ (TMEA = ethyltrimethylammonium) as the prototype, we successfully synthesized three phase transition materials, namely [DEDMA][Cd(SCN)3], [TEMA][Cd(SCN)3] and [TEA][Cd(SCN)3] (DEDMA = diethyldimethylammonium, TEMA = triethylmethylammonium, and TEA = tetraethylammonium), and the excellent regulation of the physical properties of these compounds was achieved through subtle engineering of void occupancy. More strikingly, [TEA][Cd(SCN)3] exhibits remarkable bistable properties in terms of dielectric and nonlinear optical responses (with second-harmonic generation intensity reaching 2.5 times that of KDP). This work provides a feasible avenue to reasonably customise organic-inorganic hybrid phase transition materials and finely adjust their intriguing functionalities.

Perspectives on recent advancements in energy harvesting, sensing and bio-medical applications of piezoelectric gels

The development of next-generation bioelectronics, as well as the powering of consumer and medical devices, require power sources that are soft, flexible, extensible, and even biocompatible. Traditional energy storage devices (typically, batteries and supercapacitors) are rigid, unrecyclable, offer short-lifetime, contain hazardous chemicals and possess poor biocompatibility, hindering their utilization in wearable electronics. Therefore, there is a genuine unmet need for a new generation of innovative energy-harvesting materials that are soft, flexible, bio-compatible, and bio-degradable. Piezoelectric gels or PiezoGels are a smart crystalline form of gels with polar ordered structures that belongs to the broader family of piezoelectric material, which generate electricity in response to mechanical stress or deformation. Given that PiezoGels are structurally similar to hydrogels, they offer several advantages including intrinsic chirality, crystallinity, degree of ordered structures, mechanical flexibility, biocompatibility, and biodegradability, emphasizing their potential applications ranging from power generation to bio-medical applications. Herein, we describe recent examples of new functional PiezoGel materials employed for energy harvesting, sensing, and wound dressing applications. First, this review focuses on the principles of piezoelectric generators (PEGs) and the advantages of using hydrogels as PiezoGels in energy and biomedical applications. Next, we provide a detailed discussion on the preparation, functionalization, and fabrication of PiezoGel-PEGs (P-PEGs) for the applications of energy harvesting, sensing and wound healing/dressing. Finally, this review concludes with a discussion of the current challenges and future directions of P-PEGs.

Solid-Liquid Crystal Biphasic Ferroelectrics with Tunable Biferroelectricity

Ferroelectricity has been separately found in numerous solid and liquid crystal materials since its first discovery in 1920. However, a single material with biferroelectricity existing in both solid and liquid crystal phases is very rare, and the regulation of biferroelectricity has never been studied. Here, solid-liquid crystal biphasic ferroelectrics, cholestanyl 4-X-benzoate (4X-CB, X = Cl, Br, and I), which exhibits biferroelectricity in both the solid and liquid crystal phases, is presented. It is noted that the ferroelectric liquid crystal phase of 4X-CB is a cholesteric one, distinct from the ordinary chiral smectic ferroelectric liquid crystal phase. Moreover, 4X-CB shows solid-solid and solid-liquid crystal phase transitions, of which the transition temperatures gradually increase from Cl to Br to I substitution. The spontaneous polarization (Ps ) of 4X-CB in both solid and liquid crystal phases can also be regulated by different halogen substitutions, where the 4Br-CB has the optimal Ps because of the larger molecular dipole moment. To the authors' knowledge, 4X-CB is the first ferroelectric with tunable biferroelectricity, which offers a feasible case for the performance optimization of solid-liquid crystal biphasic ferroelectrics.

The First Enantiomeric Stereogenic Sulfur-Chiral Organic Ferroelectric Crystals

Chiral ferroelectric crystals with intriguing features have attracted great interest and many with point or axial chirality based on the stereocarbon have been successively developed in recent years. However, ferroelectric crystals with stereogenic heteroatomic chirality have never been documented so far. Here, we discover and report a pair of enantiomeric stereogenic sulfur-chiral single-component organic ferroelectric crystals, Rs -tert-butanesulfinamide (Rs -tBuSA) and Ss -tert-butanesulfinamide (Ss -tBuSA) through the deep understanding of the chemical design of molecular ferroelectric crystals. Both enantiomers adopt chiral-polar point group 2 (C2 ) and exhibit mirror-image relationships. They undergo high-temperature 432F2-type plastic ferroelectric phase transition around 348 K. The ferroelectricity has been well confirmed by ferroelectric hysteresis loops and domains. Polarized light microscopy records the evolution of the ferroelastic domains, according with the fact that the 432F2-type phase transition is both ferroelectric and ferroelastic. The very soft characteristics with low elastic modulus and hardness reveals their excellent mechanical flexibility. This finding indicates the first stereosulfur chiral molecular ferroelectric crystals, opening up new fertile ground for exploring molecular ferroelectric crystals with great application prospects.

A Strategy to Enhance the Ferroelectric Behavior of MOF-802(Hf) via Doping Zr4+ Ions

MOF ferroelectrics, as a crucial member of molecular ferroelectrics, have shown intriguing advantages owing to the designability of structures and tunability of physicochemical properties, which make them an appealing group of ferroelectric materials. However, the weak ferroelectric property still is a huge challenge for further development. Here, a series of Zr-doped MOF-802(Hf)s were successfully synthesized through doping Zr⁴⁺ ions into the parent MOF-802(Hf) to improve ferroelectric properties. The well-shaped P-E hysteresis loops of Zr-doped MOF-802(Hf)s illustrate their ferroelectricity, and ferroelectric properties are effectively enhanced compared with the parent MOF-802(Hf). What's more, remanent polarization reaches 0.511 μC/cm² when the concentration of Zr⁴⁺ ions is 5%, which is 5 times higher than that of the parent MOF-802(Hf) and is on par with some perovskite ferroelectrics. The increased ferroelectric performance is attributed to the enhanced polarity of the whole structure triggered by lattice distortion when Hf⁴⁺ ions of the parent MOF-802(Hf) are substituted by Zr⁴⁺ ions. As far as we know, this is the first report on Hf-MOF exhibiting improved ferroelectric behaviors through doping metal ions into lattice nodes. This work demonstrates that introducing the second metal ions into lattice nodes of MOFs is an efficacious approach for exploiting MOF ferroelectrics with superior performance.

A high-temperature double perovskite molecule-based antiferroelectric with excellent anti-breakdown capacity for energy storage

Halide double perovskites have recently emerged as an environmentally green candidate toward electronic and optoelectronic applications owing to their non-toxicity and versatile physical merits, whereas study on high-temperature antiferroelectric (AFE) with excellent anti-breakdown property remains a huge blank in this booming family. Herein, we present the first high-temperature AFE of the lead-free halide double perovskites, (CHMA)₂CsAgBiBr₇ (1, where CHMA⁺ is cyclohexylmethylammonium), by incorporating a flexible organic spacer cation. The typical double P-E hysteresis loops and J-E curves reveal its concrete high-temperature AFE behaviors, giving large polarizations of ~4.2 μC/cm² and a high Curie temperature of 378 K. Such merits are on the highest level of molecular AFE materials. Particularly, the dynamic motional ordering of CHMA⁺ cation contributes to the formation of antipolar alignment and high electric breakdown field strength up to ~205 kV/cm with fatigue endurance over 10⁴ cycles, almost outperforming the vast majority of molecule counterparts. This is the first demonstration of high-temperature AFE properties in the halide double perovskites, which will promote the exploration of new "green" candidates for anti-breakdown energy storage capacitor.

Chiral Perovskite Nanocrystal Growth inside Helical Hollow Silica Nanoribbons

Helical perovskite nanocrystals (H-PNCs) were prepared using nanometric silica helical ribbons as platforms for the in situ growth of the crystals using the supersaturated recrystallization method. The H-PNCs grow inside nanometric helical porous silica, and their handedness is determined by the handedness of porous silica templates. They show both strong induced circular dichroism (CD) and strong induced circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals, with high dissymmetry g-factors. Right-handed and left-handed PNCs show respectively positive and negative CD and CPL signals, with a dissymmetry g-factor (abs and lum) of ∼±2 × 10^-2. Simulations based on the boundary element method demonstrate that the circular dichroism originates from the chiral shape of H-PNCs.

Effective Enhancement of the Ferroelectric Performance of Polar Co-Gallate MOF by Doping M2+ Ions (M = Mg, Mn, Ni) into Framework Nodes

MOF ferroelectrics have been demonstrated to be a promising candidate owing to various structures and controllable properties. However, weak ferroelectricity hampers their boom. Herein, a convenient strategy, doping metal ions into the framework nodes of parent MOF, is adopted to enhance ferroelectric performance. A series of M-doped Co-Gallate (M = Mg, Mn, Ni) were synthesized to improve ferroelectric properties. The electrical hysteresis loop demonstrated its ferroelectric behaviors, exhibiting obviously improved ferroelectric properties compared with the parent Co-Gallate. The remanent polarization was enhanced by two times for Mg-doped Co-Gallate, six times for Mn-doped Co-Gallate, and four times for Ni-doped Co-Gallate. The promoted ferroelectric performances are ascribed to the enhanced polarity of the overall structure triggered by framework distortion. Intriguingly, ferroelectric behaviors increase in the order Mg < Ni < Mn, displaying the same tendency as the difference value in the ionic radius between Co²⁺ ions and M²⁺ metal ions (M = Mg, Mn, Ni). These results demonstrate doping of metal ions is a valid strategy to enhance ferroelectric performances, which may serve as a guide in modulating ferroelectric behaviors.

Centimeter-Sized Piezoelectric Single Crystal of Chiral Bismuth-Based Hybrid Halide with Superior Electrostrictive Coefficient

The lead-free hybrid perovskite piezoelectrics possess advantages of easy processing, light weight, and low-toxicity over inorganic ceramics. However, the lack of understanding in structure-property relationships hinders exploration of new molecular piezoelectric crystals with excellent performances. Herein, by introducing chiral α-phenylethylammonium (α-PEA⁺ ) cations into bismuth-based hybrid halides, centimeter-sized (R-α-PEA)₄ Bi₂ I₁₀ and (S-α-PEA)₄ Bi₂ I₁₀ single crystals with a superior piezoelectric voltage coefficient g₂₂ of 309 mV m N^-1 , are obtained. Structural rigidity in crystals leads to a remarkable electrostrictive coefficient Q₂₂ of 25.8 m⁴ C^-2 , nearly 20 times higher than that of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), which is beneficial to improve piezoelectricity with the synergistic effect of chirality. Moreover, the as-grown crystals show outstanding phase stability from 173 K to ≈470 K. This work suggests a design strategy based on rigidity and chirality to exploit novel piezoelectrics among hybrid metal halides.

Inversion of Molecular Chirality Associated with Ferroelectric Switching in a High-Temperature Two-Dimensional Perovskite Ferroelectric

Controlling molecular chirality by external stimuli is of great significance in both fundamental research and technological applications. Herein, we report a high-temperature (384 K) molecular ferroelectric of a Cu(II) complex whose spontaneous polarization can be switched associated with flipping of molecular chirality. In this two-dimensional perovskite structure, the inorganic layer is separated by (NH₃(CH₂)₂SS(CH₂)₂NH₃)²⁺ organic cations skewed in a chiral conformation (P- or M-helicity in an individual crystal). As the stereodynamic disulfide bridge determines the molecular dipole moment along the polar axis, the chiral organic cation can be converted to its enantiomer as a consequence of an electric field-induced shift of the S-S moiety relative to its screw axis during the ferroelectric switching. The variation of the molecular chirality is examined with single-crystal X-ray diffraction and circular dichroism spectra. The simultaneous switching of molecular chirality and spontaneous polarization in this perovskite ferroelectric may lead to novel chiral electronic phenomena.

Tuning the luminescent properties of a three-dimensional perovskite ferroelectric (Me-Hdabco)CsI3via Sn(II) doping

As promising functional materials, organic-inorganic hybrid metal halide perovskites have attracted significant interest because of their excellent photovoltaic performance. However, although considerable efforts have been made, three-dimensional (3D) metal halide perovskites beyond lead halides have been rarely reported. Herein, a new 3D organic-inorganic hybrid ferroelectric material (Me-Hdabco)CsI₃ (1, Me-Hdabco = N-methyl-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) was synthesized and characterized. 1 underwent a ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition at T_c = 441 K, which was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dielectric measurements, and variable temperature structural analyses. Moreover, 1 shows a clear ferroelectric domain switching recorded by piezoelectric force microscopy. More interestingly, the pristine colorless crystal of 1 has no photoluminescence properties, while 10% Sn(II):(Me-Hdabco)CsI₃ shows intense photoluminescence with a quantum yield of 8.90% under UV excitation. This finding will open up a new avenue to probe organic-inorganic hybrid multifunctional materials integrated ferroelectric and photoluminescence.

Discrete Molecular Copper(II) Complex for Efficient Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting Above Room-Temperature

Developing robust, wearable, and biocompatible energy harvesting devices with bulk oxides (ceramics and perovskites) is extremely hard to achieve due to their zero mechanical flexibility, heavy metal toxicity, and tunability of properties. Alternatively, discrete inorganic complexes can be an excellent choice to overcome the above-stated issues, thanks to appropriate molecular engineering. Herein, we report an above-room-temperature ferroelectric discrete molecular complex [Cu(L-phe)(bpy)(H₂ O)]PF₆ ⋅H₂ O (1) which is suitable for piezoelectric energy harvesting due to its large values of piezoelectric co-efficient (d₃₃ =10 pm V^-1 ) and spontaneous polarization (P_s =1.3 μC cm^-2 ). Among the devices prepared with the composite films of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and various weight % composition of 1, the 10 Wt % composite shows the highest output voltage of 8 V, a power density of 0.85 μW cm^-2 , and output current of 5 μA, which is highest for any discrete inorganic complex reported to date.

A nickel(ii)-based one-dimensional organic-inorganic halide perovskite ferroelectric with the highest Curie temperature

Organic-inorganic halide perovskites (OIHPs) are very eye-catching due to their chemical tunability and rich physical properties such as ferroelectricity, magnetism, photovoltaic properties and photoluminescence. However, no nickel-based OIHP ferroelectrics have been reported so far. Here, we designed an ABX₃ OIHP ferroelectric (3-pyrrolinium)NiCl₃, where the 3-pyrrolinium cations are located on the voids surrounded by one-dimensional chains composed of NiCl₆-face-sharing octahedra via hydrogen bonding interactions. Such a unique structure enables the (3-pyrrolinium)NiCl₃ with a high spontaneous polarization (P _s) of 5.8 μC cm^-2 and a high Curie temperature (T _c) of 428 K, realizing dramatic enhancement of 112 and 52 K compared to its isostructural (3-pyrrolinium)MCl₃ (M = Cd, Mn). To our knowledge, remarkably, (3-pyrrolinium)NiCl₃ should be the first case of nickel(ii)-based OIHP ferroelectric to date, and its T _c of 428 K (35 K above that of BaTiO₃) is the highest among all reported one-dimensional OIHP ferroelectrics. This work offers a new structural building block for enriching the family of OIHP structures and will inspire the further exploration of new nickel(ii)-based OIHP ferroelectrics.

1D Chiral Lead Bromide Perovskite with Superior Second-Order Optical Nonlinearity, Photoluminescence, and High-Temperature Reversible Phase Transition

Multifunctional materials are an attractive research area. Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites are widely used in the design of these materials due to their rich properties and flexible composition. It is easy to obtain more photoelectric properties by introducing chiral groups as ligands. In this work, we synthesized chiral one-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites, namely (R/S-3-HP)PbBr₃ (1R/1S) (3-HP=3-hydroxy-piperidine). The enantiomer compounds undergo reversible phase transition at 349/336 K. Under the excitation light of 339 nm, 1R and 1S have a wide emission peak at 635 nm, showing orange light. In addition, the indirect bandgap is 3.29 eV and the SHG intensity is comparable to that of KDP. This work provides a way to design multifunctional chiral perovskite materials.

Halogen Engineering To Realize Regulable Multipolar Axes, Nonlinear Optical Response, and Piezoelectricity in Plastic Ferroelectrics

Compared with uniaxial molecular ferroelectrics, multiaxial ferroelectrics have better application prospects because they are no longer subject to the single-crystal form and have been pursued in recent years. Halogen engineering refers to the adjustment of halogens in materials at the atomic level, which can not only explore multiaxial ferroelectrics but also help to improve piezoelectrics, recently. In this work, we successfully synthesized and characterized three multiaxial plastic ferroelectrics through the precise molecular design from I to Cl, confirming the increase of the number of polar axes of ferroelectrics from 3 to 6, the increase of second-harmonic generation density from 2.1 times to nearly 6 times of monopotassium phosphate, and the increase of piezoelectric coefficient by 140%. This systematic work has proved that halogen engineering can not only enrich the family of multiaxial plastic ferroelectrics but also promote the further development of nonlinear optical and piezoelectric materials.

A Poling-Free Supramolecular Crown Ether Compound with Large Piezoelectricity

Supramolecular host-guest ferroelectrics based on solution processing are highly desirable because they are generally created with intrinsic piezoelectricity/ferroelectricity and do not need further poling. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) in the electric-active beta phase after stretching/annealing still shows no piezoelectric response unless poled. Although many supramolecular host-guest ferroelectrics have been discovered, their piezoelectricity is relatively small. Based on H/F substitution, we reported a supramolecular host-guest compound [(CF₃-C₆H₄-NH₃)(18-crown-6)][TFSA] (CF₃-C₆H₄-NH₃ = 4-trifluoromethylanilinium, TFSA = bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)ammonium) with a remarkable piezoelectric response of 42 pC/N under no poling condition. The introduction of F atoms increases phase transition temperature, polar axes, second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity, and piezoelectric coefficient d₃₃. To our knowledge, such a large piezoelectric performance of [(CF₃-C₆H₄-NH₃)(18-crown-6)][TFSA] makes its d₃₃, piezoelectric voltage coefficient g₃₃, and mechanical quality factor Q_m the highest among the reported supramolecular host-guest ferroelectric compounds and even larger than the values of PVDF. This work provides inspiration for optimizing piezoelectricity on molecular materials.

Ab Initio Study of H-Bond Dynamics in Three-Component Crystals Comprising (DABCOH+ )n Polycationic Chains

In this work, the dynamic character of hydrogen-bond (H-bond) networks in two three-component crystals comprising polycationic chains was described. The first studied system was 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octan-1-ium (DABCOH⁺ ) sulfamate monohydrate, known for its large negative linear compressibility. The second analyzed material was the newly obtained polar salt co-crystal: 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octan-1-ium sulfamate urea. X-ray diffraction measurements enabled us to study the H-bond systems in both crystals using the graph set analysis. Obtained structures served as the initial models for Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics computations. A detailed study of intermolecular interactions and power spectra was conducted. The analysis of time and space correlations between the changes in H-bonds enabled the detection of proton transfer occurring in both systems at 300 K. Further study of those dynamic phenomena was done using the Energy Decomposition Analysis for selected trajectory fragments. Our work should improve the understanding of dielectric and ferroelectric properties of hybrid organic-inorganic materials.

Rational Design of Non-Centrosymmetric Hybrid Halide Perovskites

Structural non-centrosymmetry in semiconducting organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites can introduce functionalities like anomalous photovoltaics and nonlinear optical properties. Here we introduce a design principle to prepare Pb- and Bi-based two- and one-dimensional hybrid perovskites with polar non-centrosymmetric space groups. The design principle relies on creating dissimilar hydrogen and halogen bonding non-covalent interactions at the organic-inorganic interface. For example, in organic cations like I-(CH₂)₃-NH₂(CH₃)⁺ (MIPA), -CH₃ is substituted by -CH₂I at one end, and -NH₃⁺ is substituted by -NH₂(CH₃)⁺ at the other end. These substitutions of two -H atoms by -I and -CH₃ reduce the rotational symmetry of MIPA at both ends, compared to an unsubstituted cation, for example, H₃C-(CH₂)₃-NH₃⁺. Consequently, the dissimilar hydrogen-iodine and iodine-iodine interactions at the organic-inorganic interface of (MIPA)₂PbI₄ 2D perovskites break the local inversion symmetries of Pb-I octahedra. Owing to this non-centrosymmetry, (MIPA)₂PbI₄ displays visible to infrared tunable nonlinear optical properties with second and third harmonic generation susceptibility values of 5.73 pm V^-1 and 3.45 × 10^-18 m² V^-2, respectively. Also, the single crystal shows photocurrent on shining visible light at no external bias, exhibiting anomalous photovoltaic effect arising from the structural asymmetry. The design strategy was extended to synthesize four new non-centrosymmetric hybrid perovskite compounds. Among them, one-dimensional (H₃N-(CH₂)₃-NH(CH₃)₂)BiI₅ shows a second harmonic generation susceptibility of 7.3 pm V^-1 and a high anomalous photovoltaic open-circuit voltage of 22.6 V.

A Ferroelectric Aminophosphonium Cyanoferrate with a Large Electrostrictive Coefficient as a Piezoelectric Nanogenerator

Hybrid materials possessing piezo- and ferroelectric properties emerge as excellent alternatives to conventional piezoceramics due to their merits of facile synthesis, lightweight nature, ease of fabrication and mechanical flexibility. Inspired by the structural stability of aminophosphonium compounds, here we report the first A₃ BX₆ type cyanometallate [Ph₂ (ⁱ PrNH)₂ P]₃ [Fe(CN)₆ ] (1), which shows a ferroelectric saturation polarization (P_s ) of 3.71 μC cm^-2 . Compound 1 exhibits a high electrostrictive coefficient (Q₃₃ ) of 0.73 m⁴  C^-2 , far exceeding those of piezoceramics (0.034-0.096 m⁴  C^-2 ). Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) analysis demonstrates the polarization switching and domain structure of 1 further confirming its ferroelectric nature. Furthermore, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) polymer composite films of 1 were prepared and employed as piezoelectric nanogenerators. Notably, the 15 wt % 1-TPU device gave a maximum output voltage of 13.57 V and a power density of 6.03 μW cm^-2 .

Ferroelectric Ionic Molecular Crystals with Significant Plasticity and a Low Melting Point: High Performance in Hot-Pressed Polycrystalline Plates and Melt-Grown Crystalline Sheets

Among ferroelectric crystals based on small molecules, plastic/ferroelectric crystals are currently receiving particular attention because they can be used as bulk polycrystals. Herein, we show that an ionic molecular ferroelectric crystal, guanidinium tetrafluoroborate, exhibits significant malleability and multiaxial ferroelectricity despite the absence of a plastic crystal phase. Powder samples of this crystal can be processed into transparent bulk crystalline plates either by press-forming or by melt-growing. The plates show high ferroelectric performance and related properties, demonstrating the largest hitherto reported spontaneous polarization for bulk polycrystals of small-molecule-based ferroelectrics. Owing to the ready availability of large-scale materials and processability into various bulk crystalline forms, this ferroelectric crystal represents a highly promising functional material that will boost research on diverse applications as bulk crystals.
