Cyclic (Alkyl)- and (Aryl)-(amino)carbene Coinage Metal Complexes and Their Applications

(CAAC)CuCl: A Competent Precatalyst for Carbonyl and Ester Hydrosilylation

Cu-catalyzed carbonyl hydrosilylation involves a ligated "[(L)CuH]" as the active catalyst, where the ligand L has a crucial role toward the stability, stereoselectivity, and enhancement of the hydridicity. Strongly σ-donating N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), their ring-expanded form, and an abnormal NHC as ligands have yielded robust and efficient Cu catalysts. However, cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs), despite being stronger σ-donors than NHCs and already having a salient Cu(I) chemistry, are yet to be reported as a similar ligand platform for this purpose. We establish here the familiar [(Me2CAAC)CuCl] as a powerful precatalyst in this regard. Additionally, it also catalyzes the more challenging ester hydrosilylation, which is a rare feat for a Cu catalyst. Apart from the stronger σ-donating ability, the more steric "openness" of CAACs than bulky NHCs also seems to be advantageous. To corroborate, three new (CAAC)CuCl complexes [(ArCH2,MeCAAC)CuCl] (Ar = Ph, 1-naphthyl, and 1-prenyl) are devised, where the effective steric around the copper is practically unaltered from the case of [(Me2CAAC)CuCl]. All three are equally active in carbonyl and ester hydrosilylation as [(Me2CAAC)CuCl]. Computation suggests the carbonyl insertion into a "(CAAC)Cu-H" as the rate-limiting step. To elucidate the involvement of a "(CAAC)CuH", "(PhCH2,MeCAAC)CuH" is generated in situ and is trapped as its BH3 adduct (PhCH2,MeCAAC)CuBH4.

Quantification of the Donor-Acceptor Character of Ligands by the Effective Fragment Orbitals

Metal-ligand interactions are at the heart of transition metal complexes. The Dewar-Chat-Duncanson model is often invoked, whereby the metal-ligand bonding is decomposed into the simultaneous ligand→metal electron donation and the metal→ligand back-donation. The separate quantification of both effects is not a trivial task, neither from experimental nor computational exercises. In this work we present the effective fragment orbitals (EFOs) and their occupations as a general procedure beyond the Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT) framework for the identification and quantification of donor-acceptor interactions, using solely the wavefunction of the complex. Using a common Fe(II) octahedral complex framework, we quantify the σ-donor, π-donor, and π-acceptor character for a large and chemically diverse set of ligands, by introducing the respective descriptors σd, πd, and πa. We also explore the effect of the metal size, coordination number, and spin state on the donor/acceptor features. The spin-state is shown to be the most critical effect, inducing a systematic decrease of the sigma donation and π-backdonation going from low spin to high spin. Finally, we illustrate the ability of the EFOs to rationalize the Tolman electronic parameter and the trans influence in planar square complexes in terms of these new descriptors.

Main-group compounds selectively activate natural gas alkanes under room temperature and atmospheric pressure

Most C-H bond activations of natural gas alkanes rely on transition metal complexes. Activations by using main-group systems have been reported but required heating or photo-irradiation under high atmospheric pressure with rather low regioselectivity. Here we report that Lewis acid-carbene adducts facilely undergo oxidative additions to C-H bonds of ethane, propane and n-butane with high selectivity under room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The Lewis acids can be moved by the addition of a base and the carbene-derived products can be easily converted into aldehydes. This work offers a route for main-group element compounds to selectively functionalise C-H bonds of natural gas alkanes and other small molecules.

Mechanochemical Synthesis of Corannulene Flanked N-heterocyclic Carbene (NHC) Precursors and Preparation of Their Metal Complexes

The synthesis of new compounds is an important pillar for the advancement of the field of chemistry and adjacent fields. In this regard, over the last decades huge efforts have been made to not only develop new molecular entities but also more efficient sustainable synthetic methodologies due to the increasing concerns over environmental sustainability. In this context, we have developed synthetic routes to novel corannulene flanked imidazolium bromide NHC precursors both in the solid-state and solution phases. Our work presents a comprehensive comparative study of mechanochemical routes and conventional solution-based methods. Green metrics and energy consumption comparison were performed for both routes revealing ball-milling generation of these compounds to be an environmentally greener technique to produce such precursors compared to conventional solvent-based methods. In addition, we have demonstrated proof-of-concept of the herein reported corannulene flanked NHCs to be robust ligands for transition metals and their ligand substitution reactions.

(Phosphino)(stannyl)carbene

The synthesis of a (phosphino)(stannyl)carbene is documented. The combination of phosphino and stannyl substituents imparts a highly ambiphilic nature to this carbene, enabling reactions with cyanide, isocyanide, and carbon monoxide. This leads to rare stannylketenimines and a stannylketene.

Synthesis and Application of Robust Spiro [Fluorene-9] CAAC Ruthenium Alkylidene Complexes for the "One-Pot" Conversion of Allyl Acetate to Butane-1,4-diol

A series of a novel CAAC ligands featuring a spiro-fluorene group have been synthesized and complexed with ruthenium alkylidenes, yielding the corresponding Hoveyda-type derivatives as a new family of olefin metathesis catalysts. The novel complexes have been characterized by XRD, HRMS and NMR measurements. The synthetised complexes were tested in catalysis and showed good activity in olefin metathesis, as demonstrated on diethyl diallylmalonate and allyl acetate substrates. The unique backbone in the ligand with the large, yet inflexible condensed system renders interesting properties to the catalyst, exemplified by the good catalytic performance and improved Z-selectivity. In addition, the complex can also serve as a hydrogenation catalyst in a consecutive (one-pot) reaction. The latter reaction can convert allyl acetate to butane-1,4-diol, a valuable chemical intermediate for biodegradable polybutylene succinate (PBS).

Predicting Activation of Small Molecules Including Dinitrogen via a Carbene with a σ0π2 Electronic Configuration

Although the main group species in the s and p blocks have begun to gain prominence in the field of dinitrogen (N2) activation in recent years, reports of carbene-mediated N2 activation remain particularly rare, especially for carbenes with a σ0π2 electronic configuration. Herein, we demonstrate examples of N2 activation initiated by a carbene with a σ0π2 electronic configuration and consequent N2 hydroboration reaction (with a reaction barrier as low as 19.9 kcal/mol) via density functional theory calculations. Meanwhile, the "push-pull" electronic effect upon introduction of a hydroborenium complex facilitates the generation of a thermodynamically and kinetically more stable product. In addition, such a σ0π2 carbene can also activate a series of H-X (X = H, CH3, or Bpin) bonds through an oxidative addition process with activation energies ranging from 6.0 to 18.0 kcal/mol. Our findings highlight the importance of σ0π2 carbenes in the field of small molecule activation, especially N2 activation.

Metal-ligand bond in group-11 complexes and nanoclusters

Density functional theory is used to study geometric, energetic, and electronic properties of metal-ligand bonds in a series of group-11 metal complexes and ligand-protected metal clusters. We study complexes as the forms of M-L (L = SCH3, SC8H9, PPh3, NHCMe, NHCEt, NHCiPr, NHCBn, CCMe, CCPh) and L1-M-L2 (L1 = NHCBn, PPh3, and L2 = CCPh). Furthermore, we study clusters denoted as [M13L6Br6]- (L = PPh3, NHCMe, NHCEt, NHCiPr, NHCBn). The systems were studied at the standard GGA level using the PBE functional and including vdW corrections via BEEF-vdW. Generally, Au has the highest binding energies, followed by Cu and Ag. PBE and BEEF-vdW functionals show the order Ag-L > Au-L > Cu-L for bond lengths in both M-L complexes and metal clusters. In clusters, the smallest side group (CH3) in NHCs leads to the largest binding energy whereas no significant variations are seen concerning different side groups of NHC in M-L complexes. By analyzing the projected density of states and molecular orbitals in complexes and clusters, the M-thiolate bonds were shown to have σ and π bond characteristics whereas phosphines and carbenes were creating σ bonds to the transition metals. Interestingly, this analysis revealed divergent behavior for M-alkynyl complexes: while the CCMe group displayed both σ and π bonding features, the CCPh ligand was found to possess only σ bond properties in direct head-to-head binding configuration. Moreover, synergetic effects increase the average binding strength to the metal atom significantly in complexes of two different ligands and underline the potential of adding Cu to synthesize structurally richer cluster systems. This study helps in understanding the effects of different ligands on the stability of M-L complexes and clusters and suggests that PPh3 and NHCs-protected Cu clusters are most stable after Au clusters.

Spin population determines whether antiaromaticity can increase or decrease radical stability

Aromaticity, as a classical and fundamental concept in chemistry, can enhance thermodynamic stability. In sharp contrast, a previous study showed that antiaromaticity rather than aromaticity can enhance the radical stability of α-methyl heterocyclic compounds. Here, we demonstrate a similar antiaromaticity-promoted radical stability when the methyl group is replaced by five-membered (alkyl)(amino)cyclics (AACs). More interestingly, when an AAC is fused with an antiaromatic ring, the radical stability could be either reduced or enhanced, depending on the spin population. Specifically, when the spin density is populated on an incoming antiaromatic 1,4-dihydro-1,4-diborinine moiety, the radical stability is enhanced whereas when the spin density is maintained on the original five-membered ring, the radical stability is reduced. Our findings highlight the importance of spin density in tuning the radical stability, inviting experimental chemists' verification.

Stable CAAC-Triazenes: A New Nitrogen Ligand System With Donor and Conformational Flexibility, and With Application in Olefin Activation Catalysis

N-heterocyclic imines such as pyridylidene amines impart high catalytic activity when coordinated to a transition metal, largely imposed by their electronic flexibility. Here, this donor flexibility has been applied for the first time to CAAC-based systems through the synthesis of CAAC-triazenes. These new ligands offer a larger π-conjugation that extends from the N-heterocyclic carbene through three nitrogens rather than just one, as observed in N-heterocyclic imines. We demonstrate the straightforward synthesis of three new CAAC-triazenes containing different substituents on the terminal triazene nitrogen. These compounds are remarkably stable up to 120 °C without loss of N2 as typically observed with similar triazenes. E-to-Z isomerization within the triazene is instigated by UV light and is partially reversible dependent on the triazene substituent. The quinoline-substituted CAAC-triazene 1-Q has been applied as an L,L'-type ligand in the synthesis of [PdCl2(1-Q)], [PdCl(Me)(1-Q)] and [Pd(Me)(H2O(1-Q)]+. E-to-Z ligand isomerization also occurs when coordinated to PdCl2, providing access to on-metal manipulation. The cationic complex [PdMe(H2O)(1-Q)]+ is a precatalyst for oligomerization of ethylene to form initially 2-butene and subsequently linear and branched C8-C12 products from butene activation. Moreover, isomerization of 1-hexene takes place efficiently with exceptionally low catalyst loading (10 ppm) and up to 74,000 turnover numbers.

Genuine carbene versus carbene-like reactivity

Singlet carbenes are not always isolable and often even elude direct detection. When they escape observation, their formation can sometimes be evidenced by in situ trapping experiments. However, is carbene-like reactivity genuine evidence of carbene formation? Herein, using the first example of a spectroscopically characterized cyclic (amino)(aryl)carbene (CAArC), we cast doubt on the most common carbene trapping reactions as sufficient proof of carbene formation.

Applications of low-valent compounds with heavy group-14 elements

Over the last two decades, the low-valent compounds of group-14 elements have received significant attention in several fields of chemistry owing to their unique electronic properties. The low-valent group-14 species include tetrylenes, tetryliumylidene, tetrylones, dimetallenes and dimetallynes. These low-valent group-14 species have shown applications in various areas such as organic transformations (hydroboration, cyanosilylation, N-functionalisation of amines, and hydroamination), small molecule activation (e.g. P4, As4, CO2, CO, H2, alkene, and alkyne) and materials. This review presents an in-depth discussion on low-valent group-14 species-catalyzed reactions, including polymerization of rac-lactide, L-lactide, DL-lactide, and caprolactone, followed by their photophysical properties (phosphorescence and fluorescence), thin film deposition (atomic layer deposition and vapor phase deposition), and medicinal applications. This review concisely summarizes current developments of low-valent heavier group-14 compounds, covering synthetic methodologies, structural aspects, and their applications in various fields of chemistry. Finally, their opportunities and challenges are examined and emphasized.

Expedient Synthesis of Thermally Stable Acyclic Amino(haloaryl)carbenes: Experimental and Theoretical Evidence of "Push-Pull" Stabilized Carbenes

A library of novel structurally related singlet carbenes, namely, acyclic amino(haloaryl)carbenes, was designed by a high-yielding two-step procedure, and their chemical stability explored both experimentally and theoretically. Thanks to a careful selection of both the amino and the aryl substitution pattern, these carbenes exhibit a wide range of stability and reactivity, spanning from rapid self-dimerization for carbenes featuring ortho-F substituents to very high chemical stability as bare carbenes, up to 60 °C for several hours for compounds carrying ortho-Br substituents. Their structure was determined through NMR and X-ray diffraction studies, and their reactivity evaluated in benchmark reactions, highlighting the ambiphilic character of this novel class of singlet carbenes. In contrast with previously reported aryl substituents incorporating o-CF3 and t-Bu groups, which were considered "spectator", the high chemical stability of some of these carbenes relates to the stabilization of the σ-orbital of the carbene center by the π-accepting haloaryl substituent through delocalization. Kinetic protection of the carbene center is also provided by the ortho-halogen atoms, as demonstrated computationally. This push-pull stabilization effect makes acyclic amino(haloaryl) carbenes among the most ambiphilic stable carbenes reported to date, holding promise for a variety of applications.

Ring Contraction by Rearrangement of Sterically Congested Cyclic (Amino)(aryl)carbenes

The rearrangement of sterically congested cyclic (amino)(aryl)carbenes (CAArCs) by the reaction of related iminium salts with potassium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide is reported, allowing for forming benzocyclobutanimines via a ring contraction process. Mechanistic studies by theoretical calculations indicate that the formation of conjugated ketenimines as intermediates could be considered, in which steric hindrance caused by N-alkyl motifs of CAArCs plays an important role in promoting the ring-opening by the cleavage of C-N bond.

Recent advances in the chemistry of isolable carbene analogues with group 13-15 elements

Carbenes (R2C:), compounds with a divalent carbon atom containing only six valence shell electrons, have evolved into a broader class with the replacement of the carbene carbon or the RC moiety with main group elements, leading to the creation of main group carbene analogues. These analogues, mirroring the electronic structure of carbenes (a lone pair of electrons and an empty orbital), demonstrate unique reactivity. Over the last three decades, this area has seen substantial advancements, paralleling the innovations in carbene chemistry. Recent studies have revealed a spectrum of unique carbene analogues, such as monocoordinate aluminylenes, nitrenes, and bismuthinidenes, notable for their extraordinary properties and diverse reactivity, offering promising applications in small molecule activation. This review delves into the isolable main group carbene analogues that are in the forefront from 2010 and beyond, spanning elements from group 13 (B, Al, Ga, In, and Tl), group 14 (Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb) and group 15 (N, P, As, Sb, and Bi). Specifically, this review focuses on the potential amphiphilic species that possess both lone pairs of electrons and vacant orbitals. We detail their comprehensive synthesis and stabilization strategies, outlining the reactivity arising from their distinct structural characteristics.

Cyclic (Alkyl)(Amino)Carbene-Iminoboryl Compounds with Three Formal Oxidation States

BN/CC isosterism is an effective strategy to build hybrid functional molecules with unique properties. In contrast to the alkynyl iminium salts derived from cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs) that feature only one reversible reduction wave, the isoelectronic cationic CAAC-iminoboryl adducts could be singly and doubly reduced smoothly. Both the resultant neutral radical and anionic azaborataallenes bear NBC-mixed allenic structures. The former radical has a high spin-density of 0.55e at CCAAC carbon, yet exhibits formal boron-centered radical reactivity. The latter azaborataallenes feature the nucleophilic CCAAC center and polar N(δ-)═B(δ+)═C(δ-) unit, and readily undergo nucleophilic substitution, isocyanide insertion, dipolar addition and cycloaddition reactions etc. The N-substituents have been shown to have a significant influence on the solid-state structure, thermal stability, and reactivity of azaborataallenes. This work showcases the allenic BN-unsaturated species as versatile building blocks in organic synthesis.

Two-Coordinate Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Coinage Metal Complexes: Molecular Design, Photophysical Characters, and Device Application

Since the emergence of the first green light emission from a fluorescent thin-film organic light emitting diode (OLED) in the mid-1980s, a global consumer market for OLED displays has flourished over the past few decades. This growth can primarily be attributed to the development of noble metal phosphorescent emitters that facilitated remarkable gains in electrical conversion efficiency, a broadened color gamut, and vibrant image quality for OLED displays. Despite these achievements, the limited abundance of noble metals in the Earth's crust has spurred ongoing efforts to discover cost-effective electroluminescent materials. One particularly promising avenue is the exploration of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), a mechanism with the potential to fully harness excitons in OLEDs. Recently, investigations have unveiled TADF in a series of two-coordinate coinage metal (Cu, Ag, and Au) complexes. These organometallic TADF materials exhibit distinctive behavior in comparison to their organic counterparts. They offer benefits such as tunable emissive colors, short TADF emission lifetimes, high luminescent quantum yields, and reasonable stability. Impressively, both vacuum-deposited and solution-processed OLEDs incorporating these materials have achieved outstanding performance. This review encompasses various facets on two-coordinate TADF coinage metal complexes, including molecular design, photophysical characterizations, elucidation of structure-property relationships, and OLED applications.

Valence Tautomerism Induced Proton Coupled Electron Transfer:X-H Bond Oxidation with a Dinuclear Au(II) Hydroxide Complex

We report the preparation and characterization of the dinuclear AuII hydroxide complex AuII 2(L)2(OH)2 (L=N,N'-bis (2,6-dimethyl) phenylformamidinate) and study its reactivity towards weak X-H bonds. Through the interplay of kinetic analysis and computational studies, we demonstrate that the oxidation of cyclohexadiene follows a concerted proton-coupled electron transfer (cPCET) mechanism, a rare type of reactivity for Au complexes. We find that the Au-Au σ-bond undergoes polarization in the PCET event leading to an adjustment of oxidation levels for both Au centers prior to C(sp3)-H bond cleavage. We thus describe the oxidation event as a valence tautomerism-induced PCET where the basicity of one reduced Au-OH unit provides a proton acceptor and the second more oxidized Au center serves as an electron acceptor. The coordination of these events allows for unprecedented radical-type reactivity by a closed shell AuII complex.

Boosting the π-Acceptor Property of Mesoionic Carbenes by Carbonylation with Carbon Monoxide

We report the room temperature dimerization of carbon monoxide mediated by C4/C5-vicinal anionic dicarbenes Li(ADC) (ADC = ArC{(Dipp)NC}2 ; Dipp = 2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ; Ar = Ph, DMP (4-Me2 NC6 H4 ), Bp (4-PhC6 H4 )) to yield (E)-ethene-1,2-bis(olate) (i.e. - O-C=C-O- = COen ) bridged mesoionic carbene (iMIC) lithium compounds COen -[(iMIC)Li]2 (COen -[iMIC]2 = [ArC{(Dipp)NC}2 (CO)]2 ) in quantitative yields. COen -[(iMIC)Li]2 are highly colored stable solids, exhibit a strikingly small HOMO-LUMO energy gap, and readily undergo 2e-oxidations with selenium, CuCl (or CuCl2 ), and AgCl to afford the dinuclear compounds COon -[(iMIC)E]2 (E = Se, CuCl, AgCl) featuring a 1,2-dione bridged neutral bis-iMIC (i.e. COon -[iMIC]2 = [ArC{(Dipp)NC}2 (C=O)]2 ). COen -[(iMIC)Li]2 undergo redox-neutral salt metathesis reactions with LiAlH4 and (Et2 O)2 BeBr2 and afford COen -[(iMIC)AlH2 ]2 and COen -[(iMIC)BeBr]2 , in which the dianionic COen -moiety remains intact. All compounds have been characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction. Stereoelectronic properties of COon -[iMIC]2 are quantified by experimental and theoretical methods.

Cyclic (amino)(barrelene)carbene Ru-complexes: synthesis and reactivity in olefin metathesis

The synthesis of ruthenium-complexes with cyclic (amino)(barrelene)carbenes (namely CABCs) as ligands is reported. Isolated in moderate to good yields, these new complexes showed impressive thermal stability at 110 °C over several days. Good catalytic performances were demonstrated in various ring-closing metathesis (RCM), macrocyclic-RCM, ring-closing enyne metathesis (RCEYM), cross-metathesis (CM), and ring-opening cross metathesis (ROCM) reactions.

Ambiphilicity of ring-expanded N-heterocyclic carbenes

N-heterocyclic carbenes, such as imidazole-2-ylidenes and imidazolin-2-ylidenes, the popular class of singlet carbenes introduced by Arduengo in 1991 have not been shown to be ambiphilic owing to the two σ-withdrawing, π-donating amino groups flanking the carbene centre. However, our experimental data suggest that ring-expanded N-heterocyclic carbenes (RE-NHCs), especially the seven and eight membered rings, are significantly ambiphilic. Our results also show that the steric environment in RE-NHCs can become a determining factor for controlling the E-H bond activation.

Enhancing Precatalyst Performance and Robustness through Aromaticity: Insights from Iridaheteroaromatics

Despite the inherent stability-enhancing benefits of dπ-pπ conjugation-induced aromaticity, metallaaromatic catalysts remain underutilized in this context, despite their reactivity with organic functionalities in stoichiometric reactions. We present a strategy for synthesizing a diverse range of iridaheteroaromatics, (L^L)IrIII(Cp*)I, including iridapyridylidene-indole, iridapyridene-indole, and iridaimidazole, via in situ deprotonation/metalation reactions utilizing [Cp*IrCl2]2 and the respective ligands. These catalysts exhibit enhanced σ-donor and π-acceptor properties, intrinsic σ-π continuum attributes, and versatile binding sites, contributing to stability through enhanced dπ-pπ conjugation-induced aromaticity. Spectroscopic data, X-ray crystallographic data, and density functional theory calculations confirm their aromaticity. These iridaheteroaromatics exhibit formidable catalytic ability across a spectrum of transformations under industrially viable conditions, notably excelling in highly selective cross alkylation and β-alkylation of alcohols and an eco-friendly avenue for quinolone synthesis, achieving remarkably high turnover frequencies (TOFs). Additionally, this method extends to the self-condensation of bioalcohols like ethanol, n-butanol, and n-hexanol in water, replicating conditions frequently encountered in primary fermentation solutions. These iridaheteroaromatics exhibit strong catalytic activity with fast reaction rates, high TOFs, broad substrate compatibility, and remarkable selectivity, displaying their potential as robust catalysts in large-scale applications and emphasizing their practical significance beyond their structural and theoretical importance.

Bis-[cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene]-derived diradicals

Crystalline polymeric structures of trans-1,4-cyclohexylene bridged N-tethered bis-CAACs in the form of their LiOTf adducts were synthesized and isolated. These were further used as building blocks for the synthesis of crystalline (amino)(carboxy)-based diradicals. The triplet diradical character of these compounds was unambiguously confirmed by the presence of a half-field signal in their EPR spectra. Theoretical calculations show that the singlet state is marginally more stable than the triplet state.

Chiral NHC Ligands for Enantioselective Gold(I) Catalysis Under Aerobic Conditions: the Importance of Conformational Flexibility and Steric Hindrance of NHC Ligand on Reactivity

Gold(I) catalysis has been recognized as a valuable tool for the unique transformation of multiple carbon-carbon bonds. Enantioselective π-catalysis based on gold(I) complexes is, however, still underdeveloped due to lack of privileged ligands. Herein, we present an accessible method to a new family of stable yet catalytically active chiral NHC-Au(I)-Cl complexes. The key to preserving a simultaneous fine balance between reactivity and stability in this newly developed family appears to be sterically hindered, but conformationally flexible NHC ligands. These could be easily accessed on a multigram scale by merging sterically hindered anilines with commercially available amino alcohols and amines via a four-steps synthetic sequence without the need for chromatographic purification. Further investigations of the catalytic activity of NHC-Au-Cl complexes identified the OH functionality incorporated into the NHC core as crucial for the level of enantioselectivity as well as the TsO- anion responsible for the activation of NHC-Au(I)-Cl. Finally, NMR studies and X-ray investigations revealed for the first time that the widely accepted ion metathesis (NHC-Au-Cl to NHC-Au-OSO2 R) responsible for the activation of NHC-Au-Cl complexes does not take place (or it is very slow) in commonly used MeNO2 in contrast to DCM.

Enantioselective Multifunctionalization with Rh Carbynoids

Multifunctionalization from the interception of active intermediates is an attractive synthetic strategy for the efficient construction of complex molecular scaffolds in an atom and step economic fashion. However, the design of reactions involving metal carbynoids that exhibit carbene/carbocation behavior is currently limited, and developing catalyst-controlled highly enantioselective versions poses significant challenges. In this study, we present the first asymmetric trifunctionalization reactions with rhodium carbynoids. This reaction unveils the distinctive reactivity of the carbynoid precursor, enabling it to react with simultaneously two nucleophiles and one electrophile. This process involves the formation of two distinct carbene ylides with the alcohol/carbamate and the trapping of one ylide with the imine, resulting in the formation of three new bonds. Furthermore, this strategy allows for the divergent synthesis of a wide array of β-amino esters in high yields and exceptional enantioselectivity.

Carbenes from cyclopropanated aromatics

Although a ripe old discipline by now, carbene chemistry continues to flourish as both theorists and experimentalists have shown sustained interest in this area of research. While there are numerous ways of generating carbenes, the thermal and/or photochemical decomposition of diazo compounds and diazirines remains, by far, the most commonly used method of producing these intermediates. There is no disputing the fact that these nitrogenous precursors have served carbene researchers well, but their use is not without problems. They are often sensitive and hazardous to handle and, sometimes, the desired nitrogenous precursor simply may not be available, e.g., for synthetic reasons, to study the particular carbene of interest. Furthermore, there is a legitimate concern that the photochemical generation of carbenes in solution from diazo compounds and diazirines may be contaminated by reactions in the excited states (RIES) of the precursors themselves. As an alternative, several laboratories, including ours, have used cyclopropanated aromatic systems to generate a wide range of carbenes. In each case, the cheleotropic extrusion of carbenes is accompanied by the formation of stable aromatic by-products such as phenanthrene, indane, naphthalene, and 1,4-dihydronaphthalene. The emergence of these "non-traditional" carbene sources, their versatility, and promise are reviewed in this work.

The effective regulation of heterogeneous N-heterocyclic carbenes: structures, electronic properties and transition metal adsorption

Heterogeneous N-heterocyclic carbene materials have attracted increasing interest in the fields of materials science and catalysis due to their unique properties and potential applications. However, current heterogeneous systems primarily focus on a single class of carbene. In this work, we simultaneously introduce two classes of typical five-membered carbenes into a graphene lattice, forming a series of novel two-dimensional heterogeneous N-heterocyclic carbene nanomaterials (2D-NCMs) composed of multiple carbenes. First-principles calculations demonstrate the thermodynamic stability of the designed 2D-NCMs, as well as their diverse electronic properties ranging from metallic to semiconducting. The incorporation of carbenes in the 2D-NCMs enables them to adsorb both acidic BCl3 and basic CO molecules, thus exhibiting unique amphoteric properties. Furthermore, the 2D-NCMs exhibit remarkable adsorption capacities for ten transition metals, highlighting their promising potential for future catalytic applications. By adjusting the proportions of the two classes of carbenes, we can effectively regulate the electronic properties and adsorption capacities of small molecules and transition metals in the 2D-NCMs. This study presents a novel strategy for designing and regulating the properties of heterogeneous N-heterocyclic carbenes, offering significant implications in the fields of catalysis and materials science.

N-Heterocyclic Carbenes with Polyfluorinated Groups at the 4- and 5-Positions from [3 + 2] Cycloadditions between Formamidinates and cis-1,2-Difluoroalkene Derivatives

We herein report the formation of fluorinated N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCFs) that bear fluorine atoms at the 4- and 5-positions of the imidazol-2-ylidene ring. Treatment of sodium N,N'-bis(aryl)formamidinates with tetrafluoroethylene followed by the addition of LiBF4 induced a [3 + 2] cycloaddition to afford 4,5-difluorinated imidazolium salts, which served as the precursors for 4,5-difluorinated NHCs. A key feature of this procedure is its applicability to other perfluorinated compounds, which enabled us to incorporate polyfluorinated functional groups at 4- and 5-positions on the imidazol-2-ylidene skeleton. Thus, employing octafluorocyclopentene and hexafluorobenzene led to the formation of 4,4,5,5,6,6-hexafluoro-1,3-diaryl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydrocyclopenta[d]imidazolium (CypIPrF·HBF4) and 4,5,6,7-tetrafluoro-1,3-diarylbenzimidazolium (BIPrF·HBF4) salts, respectively. A thorough NMR analysis of these NHCFs, their selenium adducts, and their tricarbonyl nickel complexes, (NHCF)Ni(CO)3, demonstrated that the fluorine substituents, contrary to expectations, tend to act as electron donors owing to the considerable positive mesomeric effect, while the perfluorocyclopentene-fused and tetrafluorobenzo-fused rings are pure electron acceptors due to their strong negative inductive effect. The unique and increased π-accepting character of the perfluorocyclopentene-fused and tetrafluorobenzo-fused NHCFs in both stoichiometric and catalytic reactions is further demonstrated by employing (NHCF)Ni(CO)3 and (NHCF)AuCl species, respectively. Moreover, an analysis of the % buried volume (%Vbur) values clearly suggests that the modification of the NHC backbone with polyfluorinated groups can drastically alter the electronic properties of the NHC ligand without substantially changing its steric properties. Our experimental results were further corroborated by a series of computational calculations.

Four- and three-coordinate planar iron(II) complexes supported by bulky organosilyl ligands

The ligand exchange reaction of (THF)2Fe[Si(SiMe3)3]2 with 2 equivalents of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) led to the formation of a square-planar iron(II) complex with trans-oriented -Si(SiMe3)3 ligands. Conversely, the introduction of a cis-coordinate bidentate organosilyl ligand instead of -Si(SiMe3)3 resulted in the formation of a square planar iron(II) complex supported by a cis-coordinate bidentate organosilyl ligand. A three-coordinate planar iron(II) bis(silyl) complex was also synthesized using a cis-coordinate bidentate organosilyl ligand and a cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene auxiliary ligand. Investigation of the catalytic performance of these complexes in the hydrosilylation of acetophenone revealed that the square-planar iron(II) complex with trans-oriented -Si(SiMe3)3 ligands exhibits superior reactivity relative to its tetrahedral precursor.

Achiral Au(I) Cyclic Trinuclear Complexes with High-Efficiency Circularly Polarized Near-Infrared TADF

Realizing high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in the near-infrared (NIR) region is challenging and valuable for luminescent material, especially for thermally activated delay fluorescence (TADF) material. In this work, we report two achiral cyclic trinuclear Au(I) complexes, Au3 (4-Clpyrazolate)3 and Au3 (4-Brpyrazolate)3 (denoted as Cl-Au and Br-Au), obtained through the reaction of 4-chloro-1H-pyrazole and 4-bromo-1H-pyrazole with Au(I) salts, respectively. Both Cl-Au and Br-Au exhibit TADF with high PLQY (>70 %) in the NIR I (700-900 nm) (λmax = 720 nm) region, exceeding other NIR-TADF emitters in the solid state. Photophysical experiments and theoretical calculations confirmed the efficient NIR-TADF properties of Cl-Au and Br-Au were attributed to the small energy gap ΔE(S1-T2) (S = singlet, T = triplet) and the large spin-orbital coupling induced by ligand-to-metal-metal charge transfer of molecular aggregations. In addition, both complexes crystallize in the achiral Pna21 space group (mm2 point group) and are circularly polarized light (CPL) active with maxima luminescent dissymmetry factor |glum | of 3.4 × 10-3 (Cl-Au) and 2.7 × 10-3 (Br-Au) for their crystalline powder samples, respectively. By using Cl-Au as the emitting ink, 3D-printed luminescent logos are fabricated, which own anti-counterfeiting functions due to its CPL behavior dependent on the crystallinity.

Reactivity of Cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)germylene towards Copper(I) and Gold(I) Complexes

The reactions of cyclic (alkyl)(amino)germylenes (CAAGe) with copper(I) and gold(I) complexes were investigated. CAAGe (1) reacts with CuBr(SMe2 ) leading to a tetrameric germylene complex [CAAGeCuBr]4 (2), whereas CAAGe (3) undergoes Au-Cl bond insertion with LAuCl (L=phosphine or N-heterocyclic carbene) to afford germanium gold(I) complexes (5 and 6). Chlorine abstraction of 6 gives the cationic germylene gold(I) complex 7.

IPr*Oxa - a new class of sterically-hindered, wingtip-flexible N,C-chelating oxazole-donor N-heterocyclic carbene ligands

N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as a major direction in ancillary ligand development for stabilization of reactive metal centers in inorganic and organometallic chemistry. In particular, wingtip-flexible NHCs have attracted significant attention due to their unique ability to provide a sterically-demanding environment for transition metals in various oxidation states. Herein, we report a new class of sterically-hindered, wingtip-flexible NHC ligands that feature N,C-chelating oxazole donors. These ligands are readily accessible through a modular arylation of oxazole derivatives. We report their synthesis and complete structural and electronic characterization. The evaluation of steric, electron-donating and π-accepting properties and coordination chemistry to Ag(I), Pd(II) and Rh(I) is described. Preliminary studies of catalytic activity in Ag, Pd and Rh-catalyzed coupling and hydrosilylation reactions are presented. This study establishes the fluxional behavior of a freely-rotatable oxazole unit, wherein the oxazolyl ring adjusts to the steric and electronic environment of the metal center. Considering the tremendous impact of sterically-hindered NHCs and their potential to stabilize reactive metals by N-chelation, we expect that this class of NHC ligands will be of broad interest in inorganic and organometallic chemistry.

The Equilibrium Molecular Structure of Cyclic (Alkyl)(Amino) Carbene Copper(I) Chloride via Gas-Phase Electron Diffraction and Quantum Chemical Calculations

Copper-centered carbene-metal-halides (CMHs) with cyclic (alkyl)(amino) carbenes (CAACs) are bright phosphorescent emitters and key precursors in the synthesis of the highly promising class of the materials carbene-metal-amides (CMAs) operating via thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Aiming to reveal the molecular geometry for CMH phosphors in the absence of the intermolecular contacts, we report here the equilibrium molecular structure of the (CAAC)Cu(I)Cl (1) molecule in the gas-phase. We demonstrate that linear geometry around a copper atom shows no distortions in the ground state. The structure of complex 1 has been determined using the electron diffraction method, supported by quantum chemical calculations with RI-MP2/def2-QZVPP level of theory and compared with the crystal structure determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Mean vibrational amplitudes, uij,h1, and anharmonic vibrational corrections (rij,e • rij,a) were calculated for experimental temperature T = 20 °C, using quadratic and cubic force constants, respectively. The quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and natural bond order (NBO) analysis of wave function at MN15/def2TZVP level of theory revealed two Cu…H, three H…H, and one three-center H…H…H bond paths with bond critical points. NBO analysis also revealed three-center, four-electron hyperbonds, (3c4e), [π(N-C) nπ(Cu) ↔ nπ(N) π(N-Cu)], or [N-C: Cu ↔ N: C-Cu] and nπ(Cu) → π(C-N)* hyperconjugation, that is the delocalization of the lone electron pair of Cu atom into the antibonding orbital of C-N bond.

Remote Steric and Electronic Effects of N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands on Alkene Reactivity and Regioselectivity toward Hydrocupration Reactions: The Role of Expanded-Ring N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

The remote groups in N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have a significant influence on metal-catalyzed reactions. We examine how remote bulkiness, electronic groups, and expanded-ring NHCs (ER-NHCs) influence alkene reactivity and regioselectivity toward hydrocupration using density functional theory calculations. The impact of remote steric bulkiness on the Cu-H insertion rate is analyzed, revealing a strong correlation between the steric substituent constant and rate ratio, where a bulky group increases the rate due to reduced steric effects in the transition state (TS). The steric properties of the examined catalysts (with a remote group R2 = CPh3, CHPh2, CH2Ph, CH3, and H) and their corresponding TSs are found to be modulated greatly by the remote steric substitution group and the ring size of the NHC ligand. Enhanced bulkiness enhances the nucleophilic Cu-H moiety. The remote electronic groups have a smaller impact on insertion barrier compared to that of steric hindrance. Furthermore, ER-NHC exploration indicates that NHCs with over five-membered rings have a significantly negative influence on the reaction rate. Finally, with a highly bulky group (R2 = CPh3), anti-Markovnikov insertion preference is attributed to high interaction energy and improved steric properties. Overall, our findings here provide valuable insights for the development of a more effective catalyst in metal-catalyzed reactions.

1,3-Imidazole-Based Mesoionic Carbenes and Anionic Dicarbenes: Pushing the Limit of Classical N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

Classical N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) featuring the carbene center at the C2-position of 1,3-imidazole framework (i.e. C2-carbenes) are well acknowledged as very versatile neutral ligands in molecular as well as in materials sciences. The efficiency and success of NHCs in diverse areas is essentially attributed to their persuasive stereoelectronics, in particular the potent σ-donor property. The NHCs with the carbene center at the unusual C4 (or C5) position, the so-called abnormal NHCs (aNHCs) or mesoionic carbenes (iMICs), are however superior σ-donors than C2-carbenes. Hence, iMICs have substantial potential in sustainable synthesis and catalysis. The main obstacle in this direction is rather demanding synthetic accessibility of iMICs. The aim of this review article is to highlight recent advances, particularly by the author's research group, in accessing stable iMICs, quantifying their properties, and exploring their applications in synthesis and catalysis. In addition, the synthetic viability and use of vicinal C4,C5-anionic dicarbenes (ADCs), also based on an 1,3-imidazole framework, are presented. As will be apparent on following pages, iMICs and ADCs hold potentials in pushing the limit of classical NHCs by enabling access to conceptually new main-group heterocycles, radicals, molecular catalysts, ligands sets, and more.

Aldiminium Cations as Countercations to Discrete Main Group Fluoroanions

The reactions of group 14 tetrafluorides (SiF4, GeF4, and SnF4) and group 15 pentafluorides (PF5, AsF5, and SbF5) with the CAAC-based trifluoride reagent [MeCAACH][F(HF)2] led to the isolation of salts containing discrete 5- or 6-coordinated fluoroanions. The syntheses of [MeCAACH][SiF5], [MeCAACH][GeF5], [MeCAACH][(THF)SnF5], and the structurally related [MeCAACH][(dioxane)SnF5], [MeCAACH][PF6], [MeCAACH][AsF6], and [MeCAACH][SbF6] are effective, selective and in high yield. All compounds were characterized by X-ray single-crystal structure analysis, NMR and Raman spectroscopy. It is worth noting that the synthesized [MeCAACH][GeF5] is a rare example of a structurally characterized compound with discrete [GeF5]- anion, while [MeCAACH][(THF)SnF5] and [MeCAACH][(dioxane)SnF5] represent the first compounds with discrete octahedrally coordinated tin fluoride anions with incorporated solvent molecules. Finally, the aldiminium-based cation [MeCAACH]+ proved to be suitable for the stabilization of rare discrete main group fluoride anions.

Gold complexes with remote-substituted amino N-heterocyclic carbenes

The 4-RN-1,3-Ar₂-imidazolium salt, R = iPr, tBu, Ar = Mes, Dipp, Mes = mesityl, Dipp = 2,6-bis-diisopropyl-phenyl was metalated by Au^I at the C2-, C5- and 4-RN positions depending on the reactants and conditions employed; a rare direct rearrangement of a Au^I aminide to an abnormal imidazol-5-ylidene Au^I complex was also observed and based on a DFT study it may involve TfO^- facilitated H⁺ transfer.

Carbene-stabilized enantiopure heterometallic clusters featuring EQE of 20.8% in circularly-polarized OLED

Bright and efficient chiral coinage metal clusters show promise for use in emerging circularly polarized light-emitting materials and diodes. To date, highly efficient circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) with enantiopure metal clusters have not been reported. Herein, through rational design of a multidentate chiral N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand and a modular building strategy, we synthesize a series of enantiopure Au(I)-Cu(I) clusters with exceptional stability. Modulation of the ligands stabilize the chiral excited states of clusters to allow thermally activated delayed fluorescence, resulting in the highest orange-red photoluminescence quantum yields over 93.0% in the solid state, which is accompanied by circularly polarized luminescence. Based on the solution process, a prototypical orange-red CP-OLED with a considerably high external quantum efficiency of 20.8% is prepared. These results demonstrate the extensive designability of chiral NHC ligands to stabilize polymetallic clusters for high performance in chiroptical applications.

(CAAC)Pd(py) Catalysts Disproportionate to Pd(CAAC)2

Palladium complexes with one N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and a pyridine ancillary ligand are powerful cross-coupling precatalysts. Herein, we report such complexes with a cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) ligand replacing the NHC. We find that the alleged reduced form, (CAAC)Pd(py), disproportionates to the (CAAC)2Pd0 complex and palladium nanoparticles. This notwithstanding, they are potent catalysts in the Buchwald-Hartwig amination with aryl chlorides under mild conditions (60 °C). In the presence of dioxygen, these complexes catalyze the formation of diazenes from anilines. The catalytic activities of the NHC- and CAAC-supported palladium(0) and palladium(II) complexes are similar in the cross-coupling reaction, yet the CAAC complexes are superior for diazene formation.

Tailoring Carbene-Metal-Amides for Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence: A Computationally Guided Study on the Effect of Cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)carbenes

Gold-centered carbene-metal-amides (CMAs) containing cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs) are promising emitters for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Aiming at the design and optimization of new TADF emitters, we report a density functional theory study of over 60 CMAs with various CAAC ligands, systematically evaluating computed parameters in relation to photoluminescence properties. The CMA structures were primarily selected based on experimental synthesis prospects. We demonstrate that TADF efficiency of the CMA materials originates from a compromise between oscillator strength coefficients and exchange energy (ΔE_ST). The latter is governed by the overlap of HOMO and LUMO orbitals, where HOMO is localized on the amide and LUMO over the Au-carbene bond. The S₀ ground and excited T₁ states of the CMAs adopt approximately coplanar geometry of carbene and amide ligands, but rotate perpendicular in the excited S₁ states, resulting in degeneracy or near-degeneracy of S₁ and T₁, accompanied by a decrease in the S₁-S₀ oscillator strength from its maximum at coplanar geometries to near zero at rotated geometries. Based on the computations, promising new TADF emitters are proposed and synthesized. Bright CMA complex (^Et2CAAC)Au(carbazolide) is obtained and fully characterized in order to demonstrate that excellent stability and high radiative rates up to 10⁶ s^-1 can be obtained for the gold-CMA complexes with small CAAC-carbene ligands.

Reduction of 2-H-substituted pyrrolinium cations: the carbon-carbon single bond in air stable 2,2'-bipyrrolidines as a two-electron-source

Reduction of 2-H-substituted pyrrolinium cations via initially formed secondary radicals results in either dimerisation or H-abstracted products, while the outcome depends on the N-substituents. The resultant central carbon-carbon single bond in the dimerised 2,2'-bipyrrolidine derivatives can be oxidised chemically and electrochemically. The notably air and moisture-stable dimers were subsequently utilised as a source of two electrons in various chemical transformations.

Metal-N-Heterocyclic Carbene Chemistry Directed toward Metallosupramolecular Synthesis and Beyond

ConspectusAs versatile, modular, and strongly coordinating moieties in organometallic compounds, N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have led to numerous breakthroughs in transition-metal catalysis, main group chemistry, and organocatalysis. In contrast, the chemistry of NHC-based metallosupramolecular assemblies, in which discrete individual components are held together via metal (M)-C_NHC bonds, has been underdeveloped. Integrating NHCs into supramolecular assemblies would endow them with some unforeseen functions. However, one of the most critical challenges is seeking an appropriate combination of the rigid C_NHC-M-C_NHC units with the resulting topologies and applications. Toward this goal, for the last decade we have focused on the development of M-NHC directed toward metallosupramolecular synthesis. This Account aims to summarize our contributions to the application of M-NHC chemistry toward supramolecular synthesis from structural design to postassembly modification (PAM) and their functional applications since integrating NHCs into supramolecular assemblies has garnered much attention among organometallic, photochemical, and supramolecular researchers. While presenting representative examples of NHC-based architectures, we try to illustrate the purposes and concepts behind the systems developed to aid the rational approach to the design and fabrication of complex assemblies and M-NHC-templated photochemical reactions.We present synthetic approaches for new architectures by the rational design of starting NHC precursors, including the poly-NHC-based mechanically interlocked metallacages and the heteroleptic architectures based on electronic complementary and self-sorting mechanisms. The structural regulation of poly-NHC-based architectures with increasing topological complexity is elaborated on by selective combinations of tetraphenylethylene (TPE) units, NHC backbones, and N-wingtip substituents in a controllable manner.Subsequently, we move to elucidating an M-NHC-templated PAM approach that leads to functional organic cages featuring polyimidazolium/triazolium groups of different shapes and sizes that are difficult to access using alternative organic approaches. These organic cages possess well-defined cavities, and their in situ-generated NHC sites are ideal platforms for stabilizing metal nanoparticles (MNPs) within their cavities for improved catalytic performance.Finally, we demonstrate how to design supramolecular M-NHC templates to synthesize cyclobutane derivatives in homogeneous solutions in a catalytic fashion. Selected examples of M-NHC template-dependent structural transformations and photoreactions are discussed. Their applications in molecular recognition, aggregation-induced emission (AIE), cell imaging, anticancer activity, radical chemistry, and stimuli-responsive materials are also described.Taken together, M-NHC-templated approaches have proven to be powerful methods for constructing diverse architectures with functional applications. The development of this methodology is still in its infancy, with tremendous growth potential and a promising future. We believe that this Account will guide researchers to design fascinating and valuable M-carbene species for diverse applications.

How To Enhance the Efficiency of Breslow Intermediates for SET Catalysis

Oxidative carbene organocatalysis, which proceeds via single electron transfer (SET) pathways, has been limited by the moderately reducing properties of deprotonated Breslow intermediates BI^-s derived from thiazol-2-ylidene 1 and 1,2,4-triazolylidene 2. Using computational methods, we assess the redox potentials of BI^-s based on ten different types of known stable carbenes and report our findings concerning the key parameters influencing the steps of the catalytic cycle. From the calculated values of the first oxidation potential of BI^-s derived from carbenes 1 to 10, it appears that, apart from the diamidocarbene 7, all the others are more reducing than thiazol-2-ylidene 1 and the 1,2,4-triazolylidene 2. We observed that while the reducing power of BI^-s significantly decreases with increasing solvent polarity, the redox potential of the oxidant can increase at a greater rate, thus facilitating the reaction. The cation, associated with the base, also plays an important role when a nonpolar solvent is used; large and weakly coordinating cations such as Cs⁺ are beneficial. The radical-radical coupling step is probably the most challenging step due to both electronic and steric constraints. Based on our results, we predict that mesoionic carbene 3 and abnormal NHC 4 are the most promising candidates for oxidative carbene organocatalysis.

Formation of Metallosupramolecular Helicates and Mesocates from Poly-N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands

In this work, a series of poly-NHC-based tetranuclear silver helicates and mesocates were synthesized from the silver-mediated self-assembly of the ligands involving multiple tridentate CNC-type pincer units and NHC coordination sites. The silver helicate was found to be transferred to a gold mesocate upon metal exchange reaction. The metallosupramolecular helicates and mesocates have been fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry, and multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. This study provides an example of the selective preparation of poly-NHC-based helicates or mesocates depending on the size of metal ions and the steric effect of ligands.

Ag-NHC Complexes in the π-Activation of Alkynes

Silver-NHC (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) complexes play a special role in the field of transition-metal complexes due to (1) their prominent biological activity, and (2) their critical role as transfer reagents for the synthesis of metal-NHC complexes by transmetalation. However, the application of silver-NHCs in catalysis is underdeveloped, particularly when compared to their group 11 counterparts, gold-NHCs (Au-NHC) and copper-NHCs (Cu-NHC). In this Special Issue on Featured Reviews in Organometallic Chemistry, we present a comprehensive overview of the application of silver-NHC complexes in the p-activation of alkynes. The functionalization of alkynes is one of the most important processes in chemistry, and it is at the bedrock of organic synthesis. Recent studies show the significant promise of silver-NHC complexes as unique and highly selective catalysts in this class of reactions. The review covers p-activation reactions catalyzed by Ag-NHCs since 2005 (the first example of p-activation in catalysis by Ag-NHCs) through December 2022. The review focuses on the structure of NHC ligands and p-functionalization methods, covering the following broadly defined topics: (1) intramolecular cyclizations; (2) CO₂ fixation; and (3) hydrofunctionalization reactions. By discussing the role of Ag-NHC complexes in the p-functionalization of alkynes, the reader is provided with an overview of this important area of research and the role of Ag-NHCs to promote reactions that are beyond other group 11 metal-NHC complexes.

CAAC-IPr*: easily accessible, highly sterically-hindered cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes

IPr* (IPr* = 1,3-bis(2,6-bis(diphenylmethyl)-4-methylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) has emerged as a powerful highly hindered and sterically-flexible ligand platform for transition-metal catalysis. CAACs (CAAC = cyclic (al-kyl)(amino)carbenes) have gained major attention as strongly electron-rich carbon analogues of NHCs (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) with broad applications in both industry and academia. Herein, we report a merger of CAAC ligands with highly-hindered IPr*. The efficient synthesis, electronic characterization and application in model Cu-catalyzed hydroboration of alkynes is described. The ligands are strongly electron-rich, bulky and flexible around the N-Ar wingtip. The availability of various IPr* and CAAC templates offers a significant potential to expand the existing arsenal of NHC ligands to electron-rich bulky architectures with critical applications in metal stabilization and catalysis.
