Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework Materials: Synthesis, Structures, Properties and Applications

Rapid redox-response featured visual ascorbic acid sensor based on simple-assembled europium metal-organic framework

A facile, fast and visible sensing platform for ascorbic acid (AA) detection has been developed based on self-assembled hydrangea-like europium metal-organic framework (HL-EuMOF). HL-EuMOF was synthesized through a simple one-step mixing process with Eu3+ and 1, 10-phenanthroline-2, 9-dicarboxylic acid at room temperature, which exhibited excellent properties including strong red fluorescence, long decay lifetime (548.623 μs) and good luminescent stability. Based on the specific redox reaction between Fe3+ and AA, the HL-EuMOF@Fe3+ was fabricated with "turn-off" response for AA, where the resulting Fe2+ displayed effective fluorescence quenching ability toward HL-EuMOF. The sensor demonstrated low detection limit (31.94 nM), rapid response time (30 s) and high selectivity. Integration of smartphone-assisted RGB analysis with HL-EuMOF@Fe3+ permitted convenient and visible quantitative determination of AA level. This approach also presented good detection performances in complex human serum and beverage samples, which could provide a valuable tool for AA detection in biomedical research and food industry.

Polyphenols functionalized MOF encapsulated BPQDs for synergistic photothermal/photodynamic antibacterial properties and multifunctional food preservation

Active antibacterial materials play an important role in solving food safety problems caused by pathogen contamination. In this study, a composite active antibacterial material with the synergistic antibacterial effectiveness of photothermal, photodynamic and the surface charge of polyphenols was developed, where the multi-porous polyphenol functionalized metal-organic frameworks (ZIF-8-TA) were used as the framework carrier, and black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) were used as the photosensitive source. The resulted ZIF-8-TA/PBQDs possesses excellent photothermal conversion efficiency (27.92%), photodynamic performance and surface charge, and these factors ensure the outstanding broad-spectrum antibacterial performance (100%). Multifunctional characteristics and excellent biocompatibility endow the materials with vast potential for foodstuff packaging. The results showed that the composite antibacterial film produced by doping ZIF-8-TA/PBQDs into chitosan could effectively prolong the shelf life of foodstuff compared with commercial membrane. The successful implementation of this research provides a new idea for controlling microbial contamination and developing multifunctional antibacterial materials.

Redox Synergy: Enhancing Gas Sensing Stability in 2D Conjugated Metal-Organic Frameworks via Balancing Metal Node and Ligand Reactivity

Two-dimensional conjugated metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) have emerged as promising candidates in gas sensing, owing to their tunable porous structure and conductivity. Nevertheless, the reported gas sensing mechanisms heavily relied on electron transfer between metal nodes and gas molecules. Normally, the strong interaction between the metal sites and target gas molecule would result poor recovery and thus bad recycling property. Herein, we propose a redox synergy strategy to overcome this issue by balancing the reactivity of metal sites and ligands. A 2D c-MOF, Zn3(HHTQ)2, was prepared for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) sensing, which was constructed from active ligands (hexahydroxyltricycloquinazoline, HHTQ) and inactive transition-metal ions (Zn2+). Substantial characterizations and theoretical calculations demonstrated that by utilizing only the redox interactions between ligands and NO2, not only high sensitivity and selectivity, but also excellent cycling stability in NO2 sensing could be achieved. In contrast, control experiments employing isostructural 2D c-MOFs with Cu/Ni metal nodes exhibited irreversible NO2 sensing. Our current work provides a new design strategy for gas sensing materials, emphasizing harnessing the redox activity of only ligands to enhance the stability of MOF sensing materials.

Extrinsically conducting MOFs: guest-promoted enhancement of electrical conductivity, thin film fabrication and applications

Conductive metal-organic frameworks are of current interest in chemical science because of their applications in chemiresistive sensing, electrochemical energy storage, electrocatalysis, etc. Different strategies have been employed to design conductive frameworks. In this review, we discuss the influence of different types of guest species incorporated within the pores or channels of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous coordination polymers (PCPs) to generate charge transfer pathways and modulate their electrical conductivity. We have classified dopants or guest species into three different categories: (i) metal-based dopants, (ii) molecule and molecular entities and (iii) organic conducting polymers. Different types of metal ions, metal nano-clusters and metal oxides have been used to enhance electrical conductivity in MOFs. Metal ions and metal nano-clusters depend on the hopping process for efficient charge transfer whereas metal-oxides show charge transport through the metal-oxygen pathway. Several types of molecules or molecular entities ranging from neutral TCNQ, I2, and fullerene to ionic methyl viologen, organometallic like nickelcarborane, etc. have been used. In these cases, the charge transfer process varies with the guest species. When organic conducting polymers are the guest, the charge transport occurs through the polymer chains, mostly based on extended π-conjugation. Here we provide a comprehensive and critical review of these strategies to add electrical conductivity to the, in most cases, otherwise insulating MOFs and PCPs. We point out the guest encapsulation process, the geometry and structure of the resulting host-guest complex, the host-guest interactions and the charge transport mechanism for each case. We also present the methods for thin film fabrication of conducting MOFs (both, liquid-phase and gas-phase based methods) and their most relevant applications like electrocatalysis, sensing, charge storage, photoconductivity, photocatalysis,… We end this review with the main obstacles and challenges to be faced and the appealing perspectives of these 21st century materials.

Photoresponsive metal-organic framework materials for advance applications

The interaction between light and materials produces a range of phenomena within molecular systems, leading to advanced applications in the field of materials science. In this regard, metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have become superior candidates to others because of their easy tailor-made synthetic methods via incorporation of photoactive moieties into their structural assembly. Photoresponsive MOFs exhibit a massive variety of exciting properties, including photochromism, photomagnetism, photoluminescence, photon up or down conversion, photoconductivity, nonlinear optical properties, photosalient effects and photoinduced switching of conformations. These photoresponsive properties of MOFs regulate different potential applications, such as on-demand gas sorption and separation, optical sensing, fabrication of photoactuators and photosensing electronic devices, dye degradation, catalysis, cargo delivery, ink-free erasable printing, bio-imaging and drug delivery in biological systems. Therefore, judicious crystal engineering along with an understanding of their structure-property relationship will lead to the fabrication of desired photosensitive MOFs. Herein, we attempted to incorporate categorical descriptions based on advanced applications of photoresponsive MOFs considering a wide range of recent publications.

Emerging chiral two-dimensional materials

Research into 2D materials has been growing with impressive speed since the discovery of graphene. Such layered materials with ultrathin morphologies and extreme aspect ratios currently display a vast range of properties; however, until recently a conspicuously missing property of 2D materials was global chirality. The situation has changed over the past few years with the implementation of several distinct types of ultrathin chiral 2D crystals. Here we offer a forward-looking perspective on this field to comprehend the fundamentals of global chirality in two dimensions and develop new directions. We specifically discuss the experimental achievements of the emerging chiral 2D materials with a focus on their design strategy, synthesis, structural characterization, fundamental physical properties and possible applications. We will highlight how the molecular-scale local chirality could be significantly transmitted and amplified throughout ultrathin single-crystalline 2D structures, resulting in distinctive global chirality that brings more sophisticated functions.

Chromium(II)-isophthalate 2D MOF with Redox-Tailorable Gas Adsorption Selectivity

Redox-active metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are very promising materials due to their potential capabilities for postsynthetic modification aimed at tailoring their application properties. However, the research field related to redox-active MOFs is still relatively underdeveloped, which limits their practical application. We investigated the self-assembly process of Cr(II) ions and isophthalate (m-bdc) linkers, which have been previously demonstrated to yield 0D metal-organic polyhedra. However, using the diffusion-controlled synthetic approach, we demonstrate the selective preparation of a 2D-layered Cr(II)-based MOF material [Cr(m-bdc)]·H2O (1·H2O). Remarkably, the controlled oxidation of the developed 2D MOF using nitric oxide or dry oxygen resulted in modified porous materials with excellent H2/N2 adsorption selectivities.

Recent Advances on the Metal-Organic Frameworks-Based Biosensing Methods for Cancer Biomarkers Detection

Sensitive and selective detection of cancer biomarkers is crucial for early diagnosis and treatment of cancer, one of the most dangerous diseases in the world. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of hybrid porous materials fabricated through the assembly of metal ions/clusters and organic ligands, have attracted increasing attention in the sensing of cancer biomarkers, due to the advantages of adjustable size, high porosity, large surface area and ease of modification. MOFs have been utilized to not only fabricate active sensing interfaces but also arouse a variety of measurable signals. Several representative analytical technologies have been applied in MOF-based biosensing strategies to ensure high detection sensitivity toward cancer biomarkers, such as fluorescence, electrochemistry, electrochemiluminescence, photochemistry and colorimetric methods. In this review, we summarized recent advances on MOFs-based biosensing strategies for the detection of cancer biomarkers in recent three years based on the categories of metal nodes, and aimed to provide valuable references for the development of innovative biosensing platform for the purpose of clinical diagnosis.

Covalent Organic Framework-Coated Polyimide Ion-Track-Etched Separator with High Thermal Stability for Developing Lithium-Ion Batteries with Long Lifespans

Separators play a crucial role in inhibiting thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, the doctor blade coating method and heavy-ion track etching technology were used to prepare a polyimide-based covalent organic framework (PI_COF) separator with excellent thermal stability and a long cycle life. Specifically, COF300 was simply coated on the surface of a polyimide-based track-etched membrane (PI_TEM) with straight through holes, which provided a rigid framework and high-temperature stability at 300 °C. These features were conducive to inhibiting thermal runaway, while porous COF300 with large holes increased the wettability of the electrolyte, facilitating lithium-ion migration and suppression of lithium dendrite growth; consequently, LIBs with an excellent cycling performance and a high rate capacity were obtained. The cell with the PI_COF separator delivered a high capacity of 90.0 mA h g-1 after 1000 cycles. The PI_COF separator with high thermal stability exhibited a long cycle life in LIBs. These features are beneficial for improving the safety characteristics of LIBs as well as for accelerating the practical application process of the PI_COF separator.

Two-dimensional metal organic frameworks in cancer treatment

With large specific surface area, controllable pore size, increased active sites, and structural stability, two-dimensional metal organic frameworks (2D MOFs) have emerged as promising nanomedicines in cancer therapy. These distinctive features make 2D MOFs particularly advantageous in cancer treatment and the corresponding application has gained considerable popularity, signifying significant application potential. Herein, recent advances in various applications including drug delivery and chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy, sonodynamic therapy, chemodynamic therapy, catalytic therapy, and combined therapy were summarized, with emphasis on the latest progress of new materials and mechanisms for these processes. Moreover, the current challenges, potential solutions, and possible future directions are discussed as well.

Designed 2D protein crystals as dynamic molecular gatekeepers for a solid-state device

The sensitivity and responsiveness of living cells to environmental changes are enabled by dynamic protein structures, inspiring efforts to construct artificial supramolecular protein assemblies. However, despite their sophisticated structures, designed protein assemblies have yet to be incorporated into macroscale devices for real-life applications. We report a 2D crystalline protein assembly of C98/E57/E66L-rhamnulose-1-phosphate aldolase (CEERhuA) that selectively blocks or passes molecular species when exposed to a chemical trigger. CEERhuA crystals are engineered via cobalt(II) coordination bonds to undergo a coherent conformational change from a closed state (pore dimensions <1 nm) to an ajar state (pore dimensions ~4 nm) when exposed to an HCN(g) trigger. When layered onto a mesoporous silicon (pSi) photonic crystal optical sensor configured to detect HCN(g), the 2D CEERhuA crystal layer effectively blocks interferents that would otherwise result in a false positive signal. The 2D CEERhuA crystal layer opens in selective response to low-ppm levels of HCN(g), allowing analyte penetration into the pSi sensor layer for detection. These findings illustrate that designed protein assemblies can function as dynamic components of solid-state devices in non-aqueous environments.

Heterobimetallic Synergism in Triple-Redox 2D Framework for Largely Boosted Water Oxidation and Flanked Carboxylic-Acid-Triggered Unconventional Tandem Catalysis

A fish-bone-shaped and thermochemically stable 2D metal-organic framework (MOF) with multimodal active center-decked pore-wall is devised. Redox-active [Co2(COO)4] node and thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole functionalization benefit this mixed-ligand MOF exhibiting electrochemical water oxidation with 375 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm-2 current density and 78 mV per dec Tafel slope in alkaline medium. Pair of oppositely oriented carboxylic acids aids postmetalation with transition metal ions to engineer heterobimetallic materials. Notably, overpotential of Ni2+ grafted triple-redox composite reduces to 270 mV with twofold declined Tafel slope than the parent MOF, ranking among the best-reported values, and outperforming majority of related catalysts. Significantly, turnover frequency and charge transfer resistance display 35.5 and 1.4-fold upsurge, respectively, with much uplifted chronopotentiometric stability and increase active surface area owing to synergistic Co(II)-Ni(II) coupling. The simultaneous presence of ─COOH and nitrogen-rich moieties renders this hydrogen-bonded MOF as acid-base synergistic catalyst for recyclable deacetalization-Knoevenagel reaction with >99% product yield under solvent-free mild condition. Besides control experiments, unique role of ─COOH as hydrogen-bond donor site in substrate activation is validated from comparing the performances of molecular-shearing approach-derived structurally similar unfunctionalized MOF, and the heterobimetallic composite. To the best of tandem Knoevenagel condensation, larger-sized acetal exhibits poor yield of α,β-unsaturated dicyanides, and demonstrates pore-fitting-mediated size-selectivity.

Emerging Advances around Nanofluidic Transport and Mass Separation under Confinement in Atomically Thin Nanoporous Graphene

Membrane separation stands as an environmentally friendly, high permeance and selectivity, low energy demand process that deserves scientific investigation and industrialization. To address intensive demand, seeking appropriate membrane materials to surpass trade-off between permeability and selectivity and improve stability is on the schedule. 2D materials offer transformational opportunities and a revolutionary platform for researching membrane separation process. Especially, the atomically thin graphene with controllable porosity and structure, as well as unique properties, is widely considered as a candidate for membrane materials aiming to provide extreme stability, exponentially large selectivity combined with high permeability. Currently, it has shown promising opportunities to develop separation membranes to tackle bottlenecks of traditional membranes, and it has been of great interest for tremendously versatile applications such as separation, energy harvesting, and sensing. In this review, starting from transport mechanisms of separation, the material selection bank is narrowed down to nanoporous graphene. The study presents an enlightening overview of very recent developments in the preparation of atomically thin nanoporous graphene and correlates surface properties of such 2D nanoporous materials to their performance in critical separation applications. Finally, challenges related to modulation and manufacturing as well as potential avenues for performance improvements are also pointed out.

"Hard" Emulsion-Induced Interface Super-Assembly: A General Strategy for Two-Dimensional Hierarchically Porous Metal-Organic Framework Nanoarchitectures

Two-dimensional (2D) hierarchically porous metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoarchitectures with tailorable meso-/macropores hold great promise for enhancing mass transfer kinetics, augmenting accessible active sites, and thereby boosting performance in heterogeneous catalysis. However, achieving the general synthesis of 2D free-standing MOF nanosheets with controllable hierarchical porosity and thickness remains a challenging task. Herein, we present an ingenious "hard" emulsion-induced interface super-assembly strategy for preparing 2D hierarchically porous UiO-66-NH2 nanosheets with highly accessible pore channels, tunable meso-/macropore sizes, and adjustable thicknesses. The methodology relies on transforming the geometric shape of oil droplet templates within appropriate oil-in-water emulsions from conventional zero-dimensional (0D) "soft" liquid spheres to 2D "hard" solid sheets below the oil's melting/freezing point. Subsequent surfactant exchange on the surface of 2D "hard" emulsions facilitates the heterogeneous nucleation and interfacial super-assembly of in situ formed mesostructured MOF nanocomposites, serving as structural units, in a loosely packed manner to produce 2D MOF nanosheets with multimodal micro/meso-/macroporous systems. Importantly, this strategy can be extended to prepare other 2D hierarchically porous MOF nanosheets by altering metal-oxo clusters and organic ligands. Benefiting from fast mass transfer and highly accessible Lewis acidic sites, the resultant 2D hierarchically porous UiO-66-NH2 nanosheets deliver a fabulous catalytic yield of approximately 96% on the CO2 cycloaddition of glycidyl-2-methylphenyl ether, far exceeding the yield of approximately 29% achieved using conventional UiO-66-NH2 microporous crystals. This "hard" emulsion-induced interface super-assembly strategy paves a new path toward the rational construction of elaborate 2D nanoarchitecture of hierarchical MOFs with tailored physicochemical properties for diverse potential applications.

2D Conjugated Metal-Organic Frameworks Bearing Large Pore Apertures and Multiple Active Sites for High-Performance Aqueous Dual-Ion Batteries

2D conjugated metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) with large pore sizes and high surface areas are advantageous for adsorbing iodine species to enhance the electrochemical performance of aqueous dual-ion batteries (ADIBs). However, most of the reported 2D c-MOFs feature microporous structures, with few examples exhibiting mesoporous characteristics. Herein, we developed two mesoporous 2D c-MOFs, namely PA-TAPA-Cu-MOF and PA-PyTTA-Cu-MOF, using newly designed arylimide based multitopic catechol ligands (6OH-PA-TAPA and 8OH-PA-PyTTA). Notably, PA-TAPA-Cu-MOF exhibits the largest pore sizes (3.9 nm) among all reported 2D c-MOFs. Furthermore, we demonstrated that these 2D c-MOFs can serve as promising cathode host materials for polyiodides in ADIBs for the first time. The incorporation of triphenylamine moieties in PA-TAPA-Cu-MOF resulted in a higher specific capacity (423.4 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at 1.0 A g-1) and superior cycling performance, retaining 96 % capacity over 1000 cycles at 10 A g-1 compared to PA-PyTTA-Cu-MOF. Our comparative analysis revealed that the increased number of N anchoring sites and larger pore size in PA-TAPA-Cu-MOF facilitate efficient anchoring and conversion of I3 -, as supported by spectroscopic electrochemistry and density functional theory calculations.

Direct Z-scheme system of UiO-66 cubes wrapped with Zn0.5Cd0.5S nanoparticles for photocatalytic hydrogen generation synchronized with organic pollutant degradation

Optimized fabrication of Z-scheme photocatalyst based on MOF materials offers sustainable energy generation and environmental improvement due to their attractive properties. The Z-scheme heterojunctions consisting of UiO-66 cubes covered with Zn0.5Cd0.5S nanoparticles were fabricated by a facile solvothermal method. Thanks to the Z-scheme carrier transport under simulated sunlight irradiation, UiO-66@Zn0.5Cd0.5S exhibited enhanced photocatalytic performance of H2 generation synchronized with organic pollutant degradation in fluoroquinolone antibiotic wastewater. Synergistically, the highest comprehensive performance was obtained in ciprofloxacin solution. The H2 yield reached 224 μmol∙ g-1∙ h-1 and simultaneously the removal efficiency was up to 83.6 %. The degradation pathways revealed that the process of piperazine ring cleavage and decarboxylation also generates H protons, further promoting the production of H2. Therefore, the effective spatial separation and transfer of the photoinduced carriers are attributed to the good band structure, large specific surface area, and cooperative reduction and oxidation reactions of UiO-66@Zn0.5Cd0.5S, resulting in significant photocatalytic activity. The toxicity assessment of antibiotics and intermediate products during the photocatalytic reaction also verifies the reduction of environmental risk. This study highlights a promising way to expand the application of the MOFs-based photocatalyst in clean energy conversion coupling with water remediation.

Central Metal-Triggered Structural Transformation of a 2D Layered MOF: Mechanistic Studies and Applications

The structural transformation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted increasing interests, which has not only produced various new structures but also served as a fantastic platform for MOF-based kinetic analysis. Multiple reaction conditions have been documented to cause structural transformation; nevertheless, central metal-induced topological alteration of MOFs is rare. Herein, we reported a structural transformation of a 2D layered Cd-MOF driven by Cd(II) ions. After being submerged in the aqueous solution of cadmium nitrate, the twofold interpenetrated 2D network of [Cd(hsb-2)(bdc)·5H2O]n [HSB-W10; bdc: 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate; hsb-2:1,2-bis(4'-pyridylmethylamino)-ethane] was converted into a novel noninterpenetrated 2D network [Cd1.5(hsb-2)(bdc)1.5(H2O)2·H2O]n (HSB-W16). This partial dissolution-recrystallization process was investigated by integrating controlled experiments, 1H NMR spectra, and photographic tracking analysis. Furthermore, a novel strategy combining in situ multicomponent dye encapsulation and central metal-triggered structural transformation was developed for the fabrication of MOF materials with white-light emission. By adopting this strategy, different dye guest molecules were concurrently introduced into the HSB-W16 host matrix, leading to a range of white-light-emitting MOF composites. This work will enable detailed studies of solid-state transformations and demonstrate a promising application prospect for structural transformation.

Hyperpolarized 129Xe Atoms Sense the Presence of Drug Molecules in Nanohosts Revealed by Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Assessing the effectiveness of nanomedicines involves evaluating the drug content at the target site. Currently, most research focuses on monitoring the signal responses from loaded drugs, neglecting the changes caused by the nanohosts. Here, we propose a strategy to quantitatively evaluate the content of loaded drugs by detecting the signal variations resulting from the alterations in the microenvironment of the nanohosts. Specifically, hyperpolarized (HP) 129Xe atoms are employed as probes to sense the nanohosts' environment and generate a specific magnetic resonance (MR) signal that indicates their accessibility. The introduction of drugs reduces the available space in the nanohosts, leading to a crowded microenvironment that hinders the access of the 129Xe atoms. By employing 129Xe atoms as a signal source to detect the alterations in the microenvironment, we constructed a three-dimensional (3D) map that indicated the concentration of the nanohosts and established a linear relationship to quantitatively measure the drug content within the nanohosts based on the corresponding MR signals. Using the developed strategy, we successfully quantified the uptake of the nanohosts and drugs in living cells through HP 129Xe MR imaging. Overall, the proposed HP 129Xe atom-sensing approach can be used to monitor alterations in the microenvironment of nanohosts induced by loaded drugs and provides a new perspective for the quantitative evaluation of drug presence in various nanomedicines.

Nonadiabatic Coupling-Induced Quantum Coherence in Two-Dimensional Materials

Two-dimensional materials provide a rich platform demonstrating quantum effects, and the process of electron-hole recombination occurring in them has significant applications in the fields of the photocatalytic and optoelectronic community. Here, we present nonadiabatic coupling-induced quantum coherence and quantum beats in Al-doped blue phosphorene. The work improves our understanding and utilization of nonadiabatic coupling in low-dimensional materials from a new perspective. In addition, our investigations provide meaningful guidance for manipulating quantum coherence in low-dimensional materials and promoting their novel optoelectronic properties.

Metal-Organic Frameworks Derived Carbon-Supported Metal Electrocatalysts for Energy-Related Reduction Reactions

Electrochemical reduction reactions, as cathodic processes in many energy-related devices, significantly impact the overall efficiency determined mainly by the performance of electrocatalysts. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived carbon-supported metal materials have become one of star electrocatalysts due to their tunable structure and composition through ligand design and metal screening. However, for different electroreduction reactions, the required active metal species vary in phase component, electronic state, and catalytic center configuration, hence requiring effective customization. From this perspective, this review comprehensively analyzes the structural design principles, metal loading strategies, practical electroreduction performance, and complex catalytic mechanisms, thereby providing insights and guidance for the future rational design of such electroreduction catalysts.

Variation in Catalytic Efficacies of a 2D pH-Stable MOF by Altering Activation Methods

Although it is well-known that the Lewis acidity of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) can effectively enhance their catalytic activity in organic transformations, access to these Lewis-acidic sites remains a key hurdle to widespread applications of Lewis-acidic catalysis by MOFs. Easy accessibility of strong Lewis acidic sites onto 2D MOFs by using proper activation methods can be a cornerstone in attaining desired catalytic performance. Herein, we report a new 2D chemically stable MOF, IITKGP-60, which displayed excellent framework robustness over a wide pH range (2-12). Benefiting from the abundant open metal sites (OMSs) and framework robustness, the catalytic activity of the developed material was explored in one-pot three-component Strecker reaction and Knoevenagel condensation reaction. Moreover, the developed catalyst is superior in catalyzing the reactions involving sterically hindered substrate (1-naphthaldehyde) with high turnover number. A comparative catalytic study was conducted using different activation methods (chloroform and methanol exchanged activated samples), highlighting the significant effect of activation methods on its catalytic performances. The sustainable synthetic pathway under solvent-free conditions for a broad scope of substrates using low catalyst loading and excellent recyclability made the developed pH-stable framework a promising heterogeneous catalyst.

When nanozymes meet enzyme: Unlocking the dual-activity potential of integrated biocomposites

Integrating enzymes and nanozymes in various applications is a topic of significant interest. The researchers have explored the encapsulation of enzymes using diverse nanostructures to create nanomaterial-enzyme hybrids. These nanomaterials introduce unique properties that contribute to the additional activity along with the stabilization of enzymes in immobilized form, enabling a cascade of second-order reactions. This review centers on dual-activity nanozymes, providing insights into their applications in biosensors and biocatalysis. These applications leverage the enhanced catalytic activity and stability offered by dual-activity nanozymes. These nanozymes find promising applications in fields like bioremediation, offering eco-friendly solutions for mitigating environmental pollution while showing potential in medical diagnostics. The review delves into various techniques for creating enzyme-nanozyme hybrid catalysts, including adsorption, encapsulation, and incorporation methods. The review also addresses the challenges that must be overcome, such as overlapping catalytic surfaces and disparities in reaction rates in multi-enzyme cascade reactions. It concludes by presenting strategies to tackle these issues and offers insights into the field's promising future, suggesting that machine learning may drive further advancements in enzyme-nanozyme integration. This comprehensive exploration illuminates the present and charts a promising course for future innovations in the seamless integration of enzymes and nanozymes, heralding a new era of catalytic possibilities.

Catalysis with Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Frameworks: Synthesis, Characterization, and Modulation

The demand for the exploration of highly active and durable electro/photocatalysts for renewable energy conversion has experienced a significant surge in recent years. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), by virtue of their high porosity, large surface area, and modifiable metal centers and ligands, have gained tremendous attention and demonstrated promising prospects in electro/photocatalytic energy conversion. However, the small pore sizes and limited active sites of 3D bulk MOFs hinder their wide applications. Developing 2D MOFs with tailored thickness and large aspect ratio has emerged as an effective approach to meet these challenges, offering a high density of exposed active sites, better mechanical stability, better assembly flexibility, and shorter charge and photoexcited state transfer distances compared to 3D bulk MOFs. In this review, synthesis methods for the most up-to-date 2D MOFs are first overviewed, highlighting their respective advantages and disadvantages. Subsequently, a systematic analysis is conducted on the identification and electronic structure modulation of catalytic active sites in 2D MOFs and their applications in renewable energy conversion, including electrocatalysis and photocatalysis (electro/photocatalysis). Lastly, the current challenges and future development of 2D MOFs toward highly efficient and practical electro/photocatalysis are proposed.

A Rhombic 2D Conjugated Metal-Organic Framework as Cathode for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Battery

2D conjugated metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) have garnered significant attention as promising electroactive materials for energy storage. However, their further applications are hindered by low capacity, limited cycling life, and underutilization of the active sites. Herein, Cu-TBA (TBA = octahydroxyltetrabenzoanthracene) with large conjugation units (narrow energy gap) and a unique rhombus topology is introduced as the cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Notably, Cu-TBA with a rhombus topology exhibits a high specific surface area (613 m2 g-1) and metallic band structure. Additionally, Cu-TBA outperforms its hexagonal counterpart, Cu-HHTP (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxyltriphenylene), demonstrating superior reversible capacity (153.6 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1) and outstanding cyclability with minimal capacity decay even after 3000 cycles at 1 A g-1. This work elucidates a new strategy to enhance the electrochemical performance of 2D c-MOFs cathode materials by narrowing the energy gap of organic linkers, effectively expanding the utilization of 2D c-MOFs for SIBs.

Metal-organic framework (MOF)/C-dots and covalent organic framework (COF)/C-dots hybrid nanocomposites: Fabrications and applications in sensing, medical, environmental, and energy sectors

Developing new hybrid materials is critical for addressing the current needs of the world in various fields, such as energy, sensing, health, hygiene, and others. C-dots are a member of the carbon nanomaterial family with numerous applications. Aggregation is one of the barriers to the performance of C-dots, which causes luminescence quenching, surface area decreases, etc. To improve the performance of C-dots, numerous matrices including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), and polymers have been composited with C-dots. The porous crystalline structures, which are constituents of metal nodes and organic linkers (MOFs) or covalently attached organic units (COFs) provide privileged features such as high specific surface area, tunable structures, and pore diameters, modifiable surface, high thermal, mechanical, and chemical stabilities. Also, the MOFs and COFs protect the C-dots from the environment. Therefore, MOF/C-dots and COF/C-dots composites combine their features while retaining topological properties and improving performances. In this review, we first compare MOFs with COFs as matrices for C-dots. Then, the recent progress in developing hybrid MOFs/C-dots and COFs/C-dots composites has been discussed and their applications in various fields have been explained briefly.

Recent Advances in Metal-Organic Framework (MOF)-Based Composites for Organic Effluent Remediation

Environmental pollution caused by organic effluents emitted by industry has become a worldwide issue and poses a serious threat to the public and the ecosystem. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), comprising metal-containing clusters and organic bridging ligands, are porous and crystalline materials, possessing fascinating shape and size-dependent properties such as high surface area, abundant active sites, well-defined crystal morphologies, and huge potential for surface functionalization. To date, numerous well designated MOFs have emerged as critical functional materials to solve the growing challenges associated with water environmental issues. Here we present the recent progress of MOF-based materials and their applications in the treatment of organic effluents. Firstly, several traditional and emerging synthesis strategies for MOF composites are introduced. Then, the structural and functional regulations of MOF composites are presented and analyzed. Finally, typical applications of MOF-based materials in treating organic effluents, including chemical, pharmaceutical, textile, and agricultural wastewaters are summarized. Overall, this review is anticipated to tailor design and regulation of MOF-based functional materials for boosting the performance of organic effluent remediation.

Atomic-level imaging of beam-sensitive COFs and MOFs by low-dose electron microscopy

Electron microscopy, an important technique that allows for the precise determination of structural information with high spatiotemporal resolution, has become indispensable in unravelling the complex relationships between material structure and properties ranging from mesoscale morphology to atomic arrangement. However, beam-sensitive materials, particularly those comprising organic components such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), would suffer catastrophic damage from the high energy electrons, hindering the determination of atomic structures. A low-dose approach has arisen as a possible solution to this problem based on the integration of advancements in several aspects: electron optical system, detector, image processing, and specimen preservation. This article summarizes the transmission electron microscopy characterization of MOFs and COFs, including local structures, host-guest interactions, and interfaces at the atomic level. Revolutions in advanced direct electron detectors, algorithms in image acquisition and processing, and emerging methodology for high quality low-dose imaging are also reviewed. Finally, perspectives on the future development of electron microscopy methodology with the support of computer science are presented.

Spontaneous-Spin-Polarized 2D π-d Conjugated Frameworks Towards Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Kinetics

Alternative strategies to design sustainable-element-based electrocatalysts enhancing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics are demanded to develop affordable yet high-performance water-electrolyzers for green hydrogen production. Here, it is demonstrated that the spontaneous-spin-polarized 2D π-d conjugated framework comprising abundant elements of nickel and iron with a ratio of Ni:Fe = 1:4 with benzenehexathiol linker (BHT) can improve OER kinetics by its unique electronic property. Among the bimetallic NiFex:y-BHTs with various ratios with Ni:Fe = x:y, the NiFe1:4-BHT exhibits the highest OER activity. The NiFe1:4-BHT shows a specific current density of 140 A g-1 at the overpotential of 350 mV. This performance is one of the best activities among state-of-the-art non-precious OER electrocatalysts and even comparable to that of the platinum-group-metals of RuO2 and IrO2. The density functional theory calculations uncover that introducing Ni into the homometallic Fe-BHT (e.g., Ni:Fe = 0:1) can emerge a spontaneous-spin-polarized state. Thus, this material can achieve improved OER kinetics with spin-polarization which previously required external magnetic fields. This work shows that a rational design of 2D π-d conjugated frameworks can be a powerful strategy to synthesize promising electrocatalysts with abundant elements for a wide spectrum of next-generation energy devices.

Dimensional Reduction of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic Synthesis of Fused Tetracyclic Heterocycles

Heterogeneous palladium catalysts with high efficiency, high Pd atom utilization, simplified separation, and recycle have attracted considerable attention in the field of synthetic chemistry. Herein, we reported a zirconium-based two-dimensional metal-organic framework (2D-MOF)-based Pd(II) photocatalyst (Zr-Ir-Pd) by merging the Ir photosensitizers and Pd(II) species into the skeletons of the 2D-MOF for the Pd(II)-catalyzed oxidation reaction. Morphological and structural characterization identified that Zr-Ir-Pd with a specific nanoflower-like structure consists of ultrathin 2D-MOF nanosheets (3.85 nm). Due to its excellent visible-light response and absorption capability, faster transfer and separation of photogenerated carriers, more accessible Pd active sites, and low mass transfer resistance, Zr-Ir-Pd exhibited boosted photocatalytic activity in catalyzing sterically hindered isocyanide insertion of diarylalkynes for the construction of fused tetracyclic heterocycles, with up to 12 times the Pd catalyst turnover number than the existing catalytic systems. In addition, Zr-Ir-Pd inhibited the competitive agglomeration of Pd(0) species and could be reused at least five times, owing to the stabilization of 2D-MOF on the single-site Pd and Ir sites. Finally, a possible mechanism of the photocatalytic synthesis of fused tetracyclic heterocycles catalyzed by Zr-Ir-Pd was proposed.

A dual-responsive RhB-doped MOF probe for simultaneous recognition of Cu2+ and Fe3

Based on the dual response of RhB@UiO-67 (1:6) to Cu2+ and Fe3+, a proportional fluorescent probe with (I392/I581) as the output signal was developed to recognize Cu2+ and Fe3+. Developing highly sensitive and selective trace metal ions probes is crucial to human health and ecological sustainability. In this work, a series of ratio fluorescent probes (RhB@UiO-67) were successfully synthesized using a one-pot method to enable fluorescence sensing of Cu2+ and Fe3+ at low concentrations. The proportional fluorescent probe RhB@UiO-67 (1:6) exhibited simultaneous quenching of Cu2+ and Fe3+, which was found to be of interest. Furthermore, the limits of detection (LODs) for Cu2+ and Fe3+ were determined to be 2.76 μM and 0.76 μM, respectively, for RhB@UiO-67 (1:6). These values were significantly superior to those reported for previous sensors, indicating the probe's effectiveness in detecting Cu2+ and Fe3+ in an ethanol medium. Additionally, RhB@UiO-67 (1:6) demonstrated exceptional immunity and reproducibility towards Cu2+ and Fe3+. The observed fluorescence quenching of Cu2+ and Fe3+ was primarily attributed to the mechanisms of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), photoinduced electron transfer (PET), and competitive absorption (CA). This work establishes a valuable foundation for the future study and utilization of Cu2+ and Fe3+ sensing technologies.

Switchable Anisotropic/Isotropic Photon Transport in a Double-Dipole Metal-Organic Framework via Radical-Controlled Energy Transfer

Directional control of photon transport at micro/nanoscale holds great potential in developing multifunctional optoelectronic devices. Here, the switchable anisotropic/isotropic photon transport is reported in a double-dipole metal-organic framework (MOF) based on radical-controlled energy transfer. Double-dipole MOF microcrystals with transition dipole moments perpendicular to each other have been achieved by the pillared-layer coordination strategy. The energy transfer between the double dipolar chromophores can be modulated by the photogenerated radicals, which permits the in situ switchable output on both polarization (isotropy/anisotropy state) and wavelength information (blue/red-color emission). On this basis, the original MOF microcrystal with isotropic polarization state displays the isotropic photon transport and similar reabsorption losses at various directions, while the radical-affected MOF microcrystal with anisotropic polarization state shows the anisotropic photon transport with distinct reabsorption losses at different directions, finally leading to the in situ switchable anisotropic/isotropic photon transport. These results offer a novel strategy for the development of MOF-based photonic devices with tunable anisotropic performance.

Self-condensation-assisted chemical vapour deposition growth of atomically two-dimensional MOF single-crystals

Two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have a wide variety of applications in molecular separation and other emerging technologies, including atomically thin electronics. However, due to the inherent fragility and strong interlayer interactions, high-quality MOF crystals of atomic thickness, especially isolated MOF crystal monolayers, have not been easy to prepare. Here, we report the self-condensation-assisted chemical vapour deposition growth of atomically thin MOF single-crystals, yielding monolayer single-crystals of poly[Fe(benzimidazole)2] up to 62 μm in grain sizes. By using transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution atomic force microscopy, high crystallinity and atomic-scale single-crystal structure are verified in the atomically MOF flakes. Moreover, integrating such MOFs with MoS2 to construct ultrathin van der Waals heterostructures is achieved by direct growth of atomically MOF single-crystals onto monolayer MoS2, and enables a highly selective ammonia sensing. These demonstrations signify the great potential of the method in facilitating the development of the fabrication and application of atomically thin MOF crystals.

Covalent organic frame based high-performance nanocomposite for construction of ATP sensor

In this work, a novel covalent organic frame (TAPT-TFPB COF) with self-enhanced photoelectric activity was prepared for decorating on conductive single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) to synthetize a high-performance photoelectric nanocomposite (COF/SWCNT), in which the interfacial charge separation and photogenerated carrier migration rate was significantly improved to obtain desiring photoelectric conversion efficiency for generating an extremely high photocurrent. Accordingly, the synthetic COF/SWCNT was ingeniously applied in the fabrication of ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor for realizing the trace ATP detection by integrating with an Exo III-assisted dual DNA recycling amplification strategy. The recycling amplification could efficiently convert trace target ATP into plentiful output DNA, which ingeniously triggered the hybridization chain reaction (HCR) to generate a long DNA strand with substantial quencher manganese porphyrin (MnPP) loading to depress the photocurrent of COF/SWCNT. The experimental data showed that proposed biosensor had a detection range from 10 fmol L-1 to 10 nmol L-1 with the detection limit as low as 2.75 fmol L-1 (S/N = 3). In addition, this proposed biosensor showed excellent analytical performance in terms of stability, specificity and reproducibility, providing a possibility to accomplish sensitive and accurate in vitro diagnosis.

Diverse Co(II) Coordination Polymers with the Same Mixed Ligands: Evaluation of Chemical Stability and Structural Transformation

Reactions of Co(OAc)2·4H2O, N'N'-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)oxalamide (L) and 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoic acid (H2SDA) afforded four coordination polymers with the same mixed ligands, {[Co(L)(SDA)(H2O)2]·H2O·CH3OH}n, 1, {[Co(L)0.5(SDA)]·2H2O·0.5L}n, 2, {[Co(L)1.5(SDA)(H2O)]·H2O}n, 3, and {[Co2(L)1.5(SDA)2(H2O)2]·4H2O}n, 4, which have been structurally characterized using single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Complexes 1-4 are 2D layers, revealing topologies of sql, 2,6L1, (4,4)Ia, and 6L12, respectively, and demonstrating that the metal-to-ligand ratio, solvent system, and reaction temperature are important in determining the structural diversity. The immersion of these complexes into various solvents shows that the structural types govern the chemical stabilities of 1-4. Reversible structural transformation is shown for complexes 1 and 2 upon solvent removal and adsorption, while those of 3 and 4 are irreversible.

First principles predictions of structural, electronic and topological properties of two-dimensional Janus Ti2N2XI (X = Br, Cl) structures

Motivated by the report of the giant Rashba effect in ternary layered compounds BiTeX, we consider two Janus structured compounds Ti2N2XI (X = Br, Cl) of the same ternary family exhibiting a 1 : 1 : 1 stoichiometric ratio. Broken inversion symmetry in the Janus structure, together with its unique electronic structure exhibiting anti-crossing states formed between Ti-d states and strong spin-orbit coupled I-p states, generates large Rashba cofficients of 2-3 eV Å for these compounds, classifying them as strong Rashba compounds. The anti-crossing features of the first-principles calculated electronic structure also result in non-trivial topology, combining two quantum phenomena - Rashba effect and non-trivial topology - in the same materials. This makes Janus TiNI compounds candidate materials for two-dimensional composite quantum materials. The situation becomes further promising by the fact that the properties are found to exhibit extreme sensitivity and tunability upon application of uniaxial strain.

A Three-Dimensionally Extended Metal-Organic Ladder Compound Exhibiting Proton Conduction

Ladder systems situated in the dimensional crossover region have attracted much attention because their electronic states and physical properties depend strongly on the electronic correlations among the constituent legs. Generally, two-/three-legged transition metal-oxide ladder compounds are studied as representative ladder systems, but two-/three-dimensional (2D/3D) extensions based on such ladder systems with a few numbers of legs are difficult because of the extreme synthesis conditions. Here, for the first time, we report the successful creation of a 3D extended two-legged ladder compound, [Pt(en)(dpye)I]2(NO3)4 ⋅ 2H2O (en=ethylenediamine; dpye=1,2-Di(4-pyridyl)ethane), which is obtained by simple oxidative polymerization of a small Pt macrocyclic complex using elemental I2. The unique 3D extended lattice consists of 1D mixed-valence halogen-bridged metal chains (⋅⋅⋅Pt-I-Pt-I⋅⋅⋅) and helically arranged macrocyclic units as the constituent legs and rungs, as confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Diffuse X-ray scattering analyses and optical measurements revealed that the out-of-phase mixed-valence Pt2+/Pt4+ arrangement arises from the weak interchain correlation among adjacent legs. In addition, this compound shows an increase in proton conductivity by a factor of up to 1000, depending on humidity.

Supramolecular Interactions Induce Dynamics in Metal-Organic Layers to Selectively Separate Acetylene from Carbon Dioxide

We report the synthesis and structural characterization of a 2D metal-organic framework with AB-packing layers, [Co2(pybz)2(CH3COO)2]·DMF (Co2, pybz= 4-(4-pyridyl)benzoate), containing a stable (4,4)-grid network fabricated by paddle-wheel nodes, ditopic pybz, and acetate ligands. After removal of the guest, the layer structure is retained but reorganized into an ABCD packing mode in the activated phase (Co2a). Consequently, the intralayer square windows (7.2 × 5.0 Å2) close, while the interlayer separation is decreased slightly from 3.69 to 3.45 Å, leaving a narrow gap. Importantly, the dangling methyl group of the acetate with H-bonds to the adjacent layers and also the well-distributed π-π interactions between the aromatic rings of neighboring layers facilitate the structural stability. These weak supramolecular interactions further allow for favorable dynamic exfoliation of the layers, which promotes efficient adsorption of C2H2 (41.6 cm3 g-1) over CO2 with an adsorption ratio of 6.3 (0.5 bar, 298 K). The effective separation performance of equimolar C2H2/CO2 was verified by cycling breakthrough experiments and was even tolerable to moisture (R.H = 52%). DFT calculations, in situ PXRD, and PDF characterization reveal that the favorable retention of C2H2 rather than that of CO2 is due to its H-bond formation with the paddle-wheel oxygen atoms that triggers the increase in interlayer separation during C2H2 adsorption.

2D Conjugated Polymer Thin Films for Organic Electronics: Opportunities and Challenges

2D conjugated polymers (2DCPs) possess extended in-plane π-conjugated lattice and out-of-plane π-π stacking, which results in enhanced electronic performance and potentially unique band structures. These properties, along with predesignability, well-defined channels, easy postmodification, and order structure attract extensive attention from material science to organic electronics. In this review, the recent advance in the interfacial synthesis and conductivity tuning strategies of 2DCP thin films, as well as their application in organic electronics is summarized. Furthermore, it is shown that, by combining topology structure design and targeted conductivity adjustment, researchers have fabricated 2DCP thin films with predesigned active groups, highly ordered structures, and enhanced conductivity. These films exhibit great potential for various thin-film organic electronics, such as organic transistors, memristors, electrochromism, chemiresistors, and photodetectors. Finally, the future research directions and perspectives of 2DCPs are discussed in terms of the interfacial synthetic design and structure engineering for the fabrication of fully conjugated 2DCP thin films, as well as the functional manipulation of conductivity to advance their applications in future organic electronics.

Coordination Self-Assembled AuTPyP-Cu Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets with pH/Ultrasound Dual-Responsiveness for Synergistically Triggering Cuproptosis-Augmented Chemotherapy

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediated tumor cell death is a powerful anticancer strategy. Cuproptosis is a copper-dependent and ROS-mediated prospective tumor therapy strategy. However, the complex tumor microenvironment (TME), low tumor specificity, poor therapy efficiency, and lack of imaging capability impair the therapy output of current cuproptosis drugs. Herein, we designed a dual-responsive two-dimensional metal-organic framework (2D MOF) nanotheranostic via a coordination self-assembly strategy using Au(III) tetra-(4-pyridyl) porphine (AuTPyP) as the ligand and copper ions (Cu2+) as nodes. The dual-stimulus combined with the protonation of the pyridyl group in AuTPyP and deep-penetration ultrasound (US) together triggered the controlled release in an acidic TME. The ultrathin structure (3.0 nm) of nanotheranostics promoted the release process. The released Cu2+ was reduced to Cu+ by depleting the overexpressed glutathione (GSH) in the tumor, which not only activated the Ferredoxin 1 (FDX1)-mediated cuproptosis but also catalyzed the overexpressed hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the tumor into reactive oxygen species via Fenton-like reaction. Simultaneously, the released AuTPyP could specifically bind with thioredoxin reductase and activate the redox imbalance of tumor cells. These together selectively induced significant mitochondrial vacuoles and prominent tumor cell death but did not damage the normal cells. The fluorescence and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results verified this nanotheranostic could target the HeLa tumor to greatly promote the self-enhanced effect of chemotherapy/cuproptosis and tumor inhibition efficiency. The work helped to elucidate the controlled assembly of multiresponsive nanotheranostics and the high-specificity ROS regulation for application in anticancer therapy.

A Multivariate 2D Metal-Organic Framework with Open Metal Sites for Catalytic CO2 Cycloaddition and Cyanosilylation Reactions

This work reports the synthesis of a dual functional 2D framework, {[Zn2(4-tpom)2(oxdz)2]·4H2O}n (1), at room temperature, where a bent dicarboxylate, oxdz2- (4,4'-(1,3,4-oxadiazole-2,5-diyl)dibenzoate), and a neutral flexible N-donor linker, 4-tpom (tetrakis(4-pyridyloxymethylene)methane), are utilized. Its single-crystal X-ray analysis indicated a 2-fold interpenetrated 2D framework having tetracoordinated Zn(II) centers and dangling pyridyl groups. Its further characterization was carried out with elemental microanalysis, FTIR spectroscopy, TG analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction. The tetracoordinated Zn(II) centers as active Lewis acidic sites and the N atoms of 4-tpom as Lewis basic sites in 1 are explored for its functioning as a heterogeneous catalyst in two important reactions, (i) cycloaddition of CO2 with various epoxides and (ii) cyanosilylation reaction under solvent-free conditions. We could successfully show the cycloaddition of styrene oxide with CO2 (99% conversion) under balloon pressure with low catalyst (0.2-0.3 mol %) and cocatalyst (0.5-0.75 mol %) loadings, which is otherwise difficult to achieve. It was observed that all the substrates (aromatic and aliphatic), irrespective of their sizes, showed conversion percentage >99%. In the cyanosilylation reaction, a conversion of 96% was obtained with 1.5 mol % of 1 at room temperature for 12 h. This framework emerged as an excellent recyclable catalyst for both the reactions.

Temperature induced single-crystal to single-crystal transformation of uranium azide complexes

The monomeric and dimeric uranium azide complexes {[(CH3)2NCH2CH2NPiPr2]2U(N3)2} (2) and {[(CH3)2NCH2CH2NPiPr2]2U(N3)2}2 (3) were synthesized by treating complex 1 with NaN3 at 60 and -20 °C, respectively. A temperature-induced single-crystal to single-crystal transformation of 3 to 2 was observed. The reduction of either 2 or 3 with KC8 yields a uranium nitride complex {[(CH3)2NCH2CH2NPiPr2]4U2(μ-N)2} (4).

3D Hierarchical MOF-Derived Defect-Rich NiFe Spinel Ferrite as a Highly Efficient Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Redox Reactions in Zinc-Air Batteries

The strategy of defect engineering is increasingly recognized for its pivotal role in modulating the electronic structure, thereby significantly improving the electrocatalytic performance of materials. In this study, we present defect-enriched nickel and iron oxides as highly active and cost-effective electrocatalysts, denoted as Ni0.6Fe2.4O4@NC, derived from NiFe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER). XANES and EXAFS confirm that the crystals have a distorted structure and metal vacancies. The cation defect-rich Ni0.6Fe2.4O4@NC electrocatalyst exhibits exceptional ORR and OER activities (ΔE = 0.68 V). Mechanistic pathways of electrochemical reactions are studied by DFT calculations. Furthermore, a rechargeable zinc-air battery (RZAB) using the Ni0.6Fe2.4O4@NC catalyst demonstrates a peak power density of 187 mW cm-2 and remarkable long-term cycling stability. The flexible solid-state ZAB using the Ni0.6Fe2.4O4@NC catalyst exhibits a power density of 66 mW cm-2. The proposed structural design strategy allows for the rational design of electronic delocalization of cation defect-rich NiFe spinel ferrite attached to ultrathin N-doped graphitic carbon sheets in order to enhance active site availability and facilitate mass and electron transport.

Rapid and large-capacity adsorption of heterocyclic aromatic amines on heat resistant two-dimensional metal organic layer/cellulose nanofiber aerogels constructed by a thawing cross-linking strategy

Composite aerogels, formed by the combination of nanoscale polymers and highly efficient adsorbents, offer the potential to deploy adsorbent distinct separation properties into a processable matrix. This paper presents a method for the fabrication of low energy bio-aerogels with high ductility, excellent wet strength and favorable heat resistance, based on cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) bound by calcium carbonate particles (CaCO3) via a simple process of ice induction, cross-linking during freezing and freeze-drying. Due to induced defects, two-dimensional metal-organic layers (MOLs) were rich in mesoporous structure and embedded in the aerogel (AGCa-MOL), which exhibited a powerful adsorption capacity. AGCa-MOL could take full advantage of their hierarchical pores and available surface area to obtain high adsorption capacity (0.694-5.470 μmol/g) and rapid adsorption kinetics (5 min) for 14 heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs). Moreover, the CaCO3 particles and MOLs gave the AGCa-MOL excellent thermal stability, so that it could maintain excellent adsorption capacity at a high temperature (100 °C) and be applied as an adsorbent to remove HAAs in the boiling marinade. The intrinsic potential of composite aerogels was revealed due to the synergistic properties of the various components in the composite aerogel.

Enhanced Catalytic Activity of a Copper(II) Metal-Organic Framework Constructed via Semireversible Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Dehydration

Herein, we present a copper(II) metal-organic framework, [Cu2(btec)(OH2)4]·2H2O (1) [(btec)4- = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylate], that undergoes single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations into two anhydrous phases 2' and 2″ with the chemical formula [Cu2(btec)], triggered by two-step dehydration at 403 and 433 K, respectively. After immersion in water for 3 days at room temperature, 2' transformed into [Cu2(btec)(OH2)] (3), while both 2' and 2″ took 1 week to revert to 1. Dynamic vapor sorption studies validated water-induced reversible structural transformations at 70% relative humidity (RH). According to single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), the local coordination geometry of the Cu2+ ion in 2' changed from a saturated octahedron to a coordinatively unsaturated square-based pyramid in 3, manifested by changes in color and dimensionality. From a topological point of view, all of the scaffolds show a binodal (3,6)-connected kgd topology with the point symbol {43}2{46}. In addition, the materials were thoroughly characterized using routine spectroscopic data and various analytical techniques. The catalytic activity of the microporous materials in the liquid-phase oxidation of styrene in acetonitrile, using 30% (wt) H2O2 as the oxidant, was investigated. The excellent performance of the monohydrous phase 3 was shown to be superior to the pristine framework and the anhydrous counterparts, as evidenced by a good turnover number (TON) and turnover frequency (TOF) = 82.6 and 21.0 h-1, respectively. Within 4 h, the substrates were catalytically oxidized to the desired products with up to 67% conversion and 100% benzaldehyde selectivity. It is worth noting that the accessible active metal sites and higher surface area enhanced the catalytic properties of 3. Furthermore, the maintenance of catalytic efficiency over five cycles and reusability are illustrated and discussed in terms of the structural differences of the microporous frameworks. Thus, a preliminary reaction mechanism for the selective oxidation of styrene is proposed. This study not only provides a fascinating example of MOF chromism achieved by thermal activation and rehydration but also sheds some light on the relationship between pore-surface- or metal-engineered sites in MOFs and their heterogeneous catalytic performances.

A zero-valent palladium cluster-organic framework

Acquiring spatial control of nanoscopic metal clusters is central to their function as efficient multi-electron catalysts. However, dispersing metal clusters on surfaces or in porous hosts is accompanied by an intrinsic heterogeneity that hampers detailed understanding of the chemical structure and its relation to reactivities. Tethering pre-assembled molecular metal clusters into polymeric, crystalline 2D or 3D networks constitutes an unproven approach to realizing ordered arrays of chemically well-defined metal clusters. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of a {Pd3} cluster-based organometallic framework from a molecular triangulo-Pd3(CNXyl)6 (Xyl = xylyl; Pd3) cluster under chemically mild conditions. The formally zero-valent Pd3 cluster readily engages in a complete ligand exchange when exposed to a similar, ditopic isocyanide ligand, resulting in polymerization into a 2D coordination network (Pd3-MOF). The structure of Pd3-MOF could be unambiguously determined by continuous rotation 3D electron diffraction (3D-ED) experiments to a resolution of ~1.0 Å (>99% completeness), showcasing the applicability of 3D-ED to nanocrystalline, organometallic polymers. Pd3-MOF displays Pd03 cluster nodes, which possess significant thermal and aerobic stability, and activity towards hydrogenation catalysis. Importantly, the realization of Pd3-MOF paves the way for the exploitation of metal clusters as building blocks for rigidly interlocked metal nanoparticles at the molecular limit.

A viologen-derived luminescent material exhibiting photochromism, photocontrolled luminescence and selective detection of Cr2O72- in aqueous solution

Stable viologen-derived multifunctional smart materials exhibit widespread practical applications in many areas. In this study, a viologen-derived material with 4-fold interpenetrating diamondoid network, {[Cd(1,4-ndc)(cpbpy)]·2H2O}n, was successfully constructed based on asymmetrical N-(3-carboxyphenyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium (cpbpy) and 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (1,4-H2ndc). The compound shows reversible photochromic behavior under a xenon lamp, which are proved by UV-vis spectra and EPR characterizations. Moreover, the compound with good photoluminescence properties displays photocontrolled luminescence quenching behaviors. Owing to its good water stability, the compound is then applied in luminescence sensing for the detection of Cr2O72- in aqueous solution. The corresponding luminescence quenching constant for Cr2O72- is KSV = 4.33 × 104 M-1, and the detection limit is 3.66 μM. Systematic investigations on the luminescence quenching mechanism suggest that the inner filter effect resulted in the selective detection of Cr2O72-. This study provides inspiration for the design and synthesis of target luminescent crystalline materials with rigid and asymmetric viologen-derived ligands.

Construction of Porphyrin-Based Bimetallic Nanomaterials with Photocatalytic Properties

The efficient synthesis of nanosheets containing two metal ions is currently a formidable challenge. Here, we attempted to dope lanthanide-based bimetals into porphyrin-based metal-organic skeleton materials (MOFs) by microwave-assisted heating. The results of the EDX, ICP, and XPS tests show that we have successfully synthesized porphyrin-based lanthanide bimetallic nanosheets (Tb-Eu-TCPP) using a household microwave oven. In addition, it is tested and experimentally evident that these nanosheets have a thinner thickness, a larger BET surface area, and higher photogenerated carrier separation efficiency than bulk porphyrin-based bimetallic materials, thus exhibiting enhanced photocatalytic activity and n-type semiconductor properties. Furthermore, the prepared Tb-Eu-TCPP nanomaterials are more efficient in generating single-linear state oxygen under visible light irradiation compared to pristine monometallic nanosheets due to the generation of bimetallic nodes. The significant increase in catalytic activity is attributed to the improved separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers. This study not only deepens our understanding of lanthanide bimetallic nanosheet materials but also introduces an innovative approach to improve the photocatalytic performance of MOFs.

Triple Isomerism in 3D Covalent Organic Frameworks

Isomerism in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has scarcely been known. Here, for the first time we show 3D COFs with three framework isomers or polymorphs constructed from the same building blocks. All isomers were obtained as large (>10 μm) crystals; although their crystal shapes were distinctly different, they showed identical FT-IR and solid-state NMR spectra. Our structural analyses revealed unprecedented triple isomerism in 3D COFs (noninterpenetrated dia, qtz, and 3-fold interpenetrated dia-c3 nets). Furthermore, this Communication reports the first known COF with qtz topology for which the structure determination was based on Rietveld analysis. We achieved triple framework isomerism by reticulating a tetrahedral building block with a flexible junction and a linear building block with PEO side chains and by varying solution compositions. Our energy calculations, along with the discovery of interisomer transition, revealed that the isomer with qtz topology was a kinetic isomer. Thus, this simple yet little-explored concept of reticulating only flexible building blocks is an effective pathway to significantly broaden the diversity of 3D COFs, which have been proposed for a myriad of applications.

2-Methylimidazole-modulated 2D Cu metal-organic framework for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural hydrodeoxygenation

Preparation of the high value-added chemical 2,5-dimethylfuran (2,5-DMF) from the biomass-derived platform molecule 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is of great significance in the preparation of biofuels. Here, a bottom-up strategy was used to prepare a metal-organic framework (MOF) material with a two-dimensional nanosheet morphology, named CPM, in which an additive 2-methylimidazole was introduced into the hydrothermal process of Cu2+ ions and terephthalic acid. Subsequently, CPM-700 prepared by heat treatment under an inert atmosphere showed excellent catalytic performance in the reaction of HMF hydrodeoxygenation to 2,5-DMF. The materials before and after pyrogenation were characterized by PXRD, XPS, TEM, N2 adsorption and desorption and so on. It was confirmed that compared with the catalyst derived from the cubic MOF material self-assembled by Cu2+ and terephthalic acid, the morphology of 2D nanosheets was beneficial for the reaction of HMF to 2,5-DMF. Combined with the experimental data, the possible reaction path of 2,5-DMF preparation from HMF is that 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran was formed by hydrogenation of the aldehyde group on the furan ring, and then 2,5-DMF was obtained by hydrogenolysis. This paper provides an effective route for 2D MOF-derived catalytic materials in the selective hydrogenation of HMF.

Pd8 Nanocluster with Nonmetal-to-Metal- Ring Coordination and Promising Photothermal Conversion Efficiency

Constructing ambient-stable, single-atom-layered metal-based materials with atomic precision and understanding their underlying stability mechanisms are challenging. Here, stable single-atom-layered nanoclusters of Pd were synthesized and precisely characterized through electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. A pseudo-pentalene-like Pd8 unit was found in the nanocluster, interacting with two syn PPh units through nonmetal-to-metal -ring coordination. The unexpected coordination, which is distinctly different from the typical organoring-to-metal coordination in half-sandwich-type organometallic compounds, contributes to the ambient stability of the as-obtained single-atom-layered nanocluster as revealed through theoretical and experimental analyses. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations revealed dominant electron transition along the horizontal x-direction of the Pd8 plane, indicating high photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) of the nanocluster, which was verified by the experimental PCE of 73.3 %. Therefore, this study unveils the birth of a novel type of compound and the finding of the unusual nonmetal-to-metal -ring coordination and has important implications for future syntheses, structures, properties, and structure-property correlations of single-atom-layered metal-based materials.
