Abstract
Pendant alkyl chains are widely used to successfully obtain a wide variety of soluble linear 1D π-conjugated polymers. Over the past several decades, a wide variety of π-conjugated polymers have been synthesized to realize the desired properties and improve the performance of organic electronic devices. However, this strategy is not suitable for generating soluble 2D-π-conjugated materials, including ladder polymers, nanoribbons, and 2D-π-conjugated polymers, due to strong van der Waals interactions between the ribbons and sheets. The drive to synthesize higher dimensional polymers and to enhance polymers' properties has spurred the exploration of a novel direction in materials chemistry-the synthesis of unconventional monomers and polymers. The Gavvalapalli research group has developed and used cycloalkyl straps containing aryl building blocks for the synthesis of conjugated polymers. These cycloalkyl straps, positioned either above or below the π-conjugation plane, have been shown to directly control the π-π interactions between the polymer chains. We have demonstrated that π-face masking cycloalkyl straps hinder interchain π-π interactions. The first part of this review article highlights the use of cycloalkyl straps for the synthesis of higher dimensional π-conjugated polymers. In this section, we discuss the synthesis of 2D-H-mers, dispersible hyperbranched π-conjugated polymers, and conjugated porous polymers without the pendant solubilizing chains. The second part of the feature article highlights how the cycloalkyl straps can be used to gain control over polymer-acceptor interactions, including the interaction strength and the location of the acceptor along the polymer backbone. We conclude the article with the future outlook on cycloalkyl strap-containing building blocks in the world of conjugated polymers.

Abstract
The Diels-Alder reaction of tetraaryl cyclopentadienones with benzo[b]thiophene-S,S-dioxides in nitrobenzene under reflux led to the formation of aryl/hetero-aryl fused phenanthrene derivatives via SO2 elimination of the intermediate dihydrodibenzothiophene-S,S-dioxides followed by 6π-electrocyclization and subsequent aromatization. The 6π-electrocyclization methodology was found to be applicable for assembling a wide variety of phenanthrene derivatives in good to moderate yields.

Abstract
Heteropolycyclic molecular systems, which are essential components in the fields of materials and pharmacology, frequently consist of 2D extended organic aromatic rings. Here, we introduce a type of inorganic-organic hybrid 3D conjugates by merging an aromatic boron cluster with a phosphine and a π-conjugated unit. To achieve this, a couple-close synthetic strategy via B-H activation of nido-carboranes with alkynes has been developed, which leads to diverse boron cluster-extended phosphoniums in a twisted structure with high yields under mild conditions. Experimental and theoretical results reveal that the fusion between the boron cluster and the formed borophosphonium heterocycle facilitates electron delocalization throughout the structure. The unusual framework demonstrates distinct properties from bare boron clusters and pure aromatic ring-extended counterparts, such as improved thermal/chemical stability and photophysical properties. Thus, the boron cluster-based 3D conjugates expand the library of aromatic-based heterocyclics, showcasing great potential in functional materials.

Abstract
Microporous organic polymers that have three-dimensional connectivity stemming from monomers with tetrahedral or tetrahedron-like geometry can have high surface areas and strong fluorescence. There are however few examples of such polymers based on hindered biaryls, and their fluorescence has not been studied. Hypothesizing that the contortion in a hindered biphenyl moiety would modulate the optical properties of a polymer built from it, we synthesized a meta-enchained polyphenylene from a 2,2',6,6'-tetramethylbiphenyl-based monomer, in which the two phenyl rings are nearly mutually perpendicular. The polymer was microporous with SBET = 495 m2 g-1. The polymer absorbed near-UV light and emitted blue fluorescence despite the meta-enchainment that would have been expected to break the conjugation. A related copolymer, synthesized from 2,2',6,6'-tetramethylbiphenyl-based and unsubstituted biphenyl-based monomers, was microporous but not fluorescent.

Abstract
Optically active oligo(o-phenylene)-layered molecules were synthesized from planar chiral enantiopure [2.2]paracyclophane. Their structures and optical properties were characterized by experimental and theoretical approaches. The axial chiralities between phenylene rings of the oligo(o-phenylene)s were controlled by the planar chirality to form one-handed helical structures. The o-quinquephenyl-layered molecule was emissive, and circularly polarized luminescence was observed with a high anisotropy factor (|glum| value) of 0.012.

Abstract
The bottom-up synthesis of 3D tetrakis(hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenyl)methane, "tetrahedraphene", is reported. This molecular nanographene constituted by four hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) units attached to a central sp3 carbon atom, shows a highly symmetric arrangement of the HBC units disposed in the apex of a tetrahedron. The X-ray crystal structure reveals a tetrahedral symmetry of the molecule and the packing in the crystal is achieved mostly by CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions since the interstitial solvent molecules prevent the π⋅⋅⋅π interactions. In solution, tetrahedraphene shows the same electrochemical and photophysical properties as the hexa-t Bu-substituted HBC (t Bu-HBC) molecule. However, upon water addition, it undergoes a fluorescence change in solution and in the precipitated solid, showing an aggregation induced emission (AIE) process, probably derived from the restriction in the rotation and/or vibration of the HBCs. Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) calculations reveal that upon aggregation, the high energy region of the emission band decreases in intensity, whereas the intensity of the red edge emission signal increases and presents a smoother decay, compared to the non-aggregated molecule. All in all, the excellent correlation between our simulations and the experimental findings allows explaining the colour change observed in the different solutions upon increasing the water fraction.

Abstract
Although graphite derivatives, such as graphene, graphene oxide, and reduced graphene oxide, have been widely used as lubricating oil additives to reduce friction and wear, their synthesis either proceeds with complicated procedures in low yield, suffering from high cost, or involves the utilization of highly corrosive chemicals, raising safety and environmental concerns. Therefore, the direct use of pristine graphite as a lubricating oil additive is indispensable for practical tribological applications. However, the realization of this idea has been seriously hampered by the incompatibility of graphite with lubricating base oils. In this work, we report a rational strategy to directly disperse graphite in base oils in the form of oleogels assisted by pyrene functionalized telechelic polymers under mild condition. The resulting oleogels exhibit long-time colloidal stability for more than one year, wherein the graphite has been exfoliated to in situ form graphene through π-π interactions with the pyrene-containing telechelics. Moreover, compared with the base oil, the graphite-based oleogels are found to exhibit remarkable reductions in friction and wear by up to 52% and 97%, respectively. Significantly, such tribological performances are comparable to those of exfoliated graphite derivatives. Taken collectively, directly using pristine graphite as a lubricating oil additive with superior tribological properties represents a revolutionary approach to create low-cost, green, and high-performance lubricants just based on pristine layered materials without involving any pre-exfoliations.

Abstract
Dendrimers have a diverse and versatile morphology, frequently consisting of core, linking, and peripheral moieties. Dendrimers with flexible linkers, such as PAMAM, cannot retain the persistent shape of molecules, and this has been widely explored and reviewed previously; nevertheless, dendrimers with stiff linkers can preserve the persistent shape of the dendrimers, which has been reported considerably less. This review thus focuses on addressing shape-persistent dendrimers with rigid linking moieties discovered in recent years, i.e., from 2012 to 2023. Shape-persistent dendrimers with an interstitial gap between the dendritic frames in the solid state may or may not let the intramolecular void space be accessible for guest molecules, which largely depends on whether their peripheral groups are flexible or non-flexible. In this paper, eight articles on shape-persistent dendrimers with a flexible alkyl periphery, which may exhibit mesogenic phases upon thermal treatment, and eight articles on shape-persistent dendrimers with a non-flexible periphery, which may allow external ions, gases, or volatile organic compounds to access the interstitial gaps between dendritic frames, are reviewed.

Abstract
Herein, we describe the synthesis of the first boron nitride-doped polyphenylenic material obtained through a [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction between a triethynyl borazine unit and a biscyclopentadienone derivative, which undergoes organogel formation in chlorinated solvents (the critical jellification concentration is 4% w/w in CHCl3). The polymer has been characterized extensively by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, solid-state 13C NMR, solid-state 11B NMR, and by comparison with the isolated monomeric unit. Furthermore, the polymer gels formed in chlorinated solvents have been thoroughly characterized and studied, showing rheological properties comparable to those of polyacrylamide gels with a low crosslinker percentage. Given the thermal and chemical stability, the material was studied as a potential support for solid-state electrolytes. showing properties comparable to those of polyethylene glycol-based electrolytes, thus presenting great potential for the application of this new class of material in lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract
The synthesis of endo-functionalized cyclic oligophenylenes in which adjacent benzene rings are perpendicular to one another is described. Annulation precursors, OH- or NH2-functionalized quinquephenyl diboronic acids, and septiphenyl dibromo compounds were systematically prepared by using a diprotected biphenyl-3,4'-diyl diboronic acid as a key compound. Four endo-functionalized cyclic oligophenylenes were synthesized by annulation of the precursors in dilute conditions through Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling. X-ray analysis of the macrocycle revealed the unique 1D channel packing structure formed by connecting the nanometer-sized cavity of the macrocycle. Furthermore, NH2-functionalized macrocycles could bind a chiral phosphoric acid in the cavity in CDCl3 solution.

Abstract
A series of novel V-shaped quinoxaline, [1,2,5]oxadiazolo[3,4-b]pyrazine and [1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-b]pyrazine push-pull derivatives with 2,4'-biphenylene linker were designed and their electrochemical, photophysical and nonlinear optical properties were investigated. [1,2,5]Oxadiazolo[3,4-b]pyrazine is the stronger electron-withdrawing fragment as shown by electrochemical, and photophysical data. All compounds are emissive in a solid-state (from the cyan to red region of the spectrum) and quinoxaline derivatives are emissions in DCM solution. It has been found that quinoxaline derivatives demonstrate important solvatochromism and extra-large Stokes shifts, characteristic of twisted intramolecular charge transfer excited state as well as aggregation induced emission. The experimental conclusions have been justified by theoretical (TD-)DFT calculations.

Abstract
Conventional synthetic methods to yield polycyclic heteroarenes have largely relied on metal-mediated arylation reactions requiring pre-functionalised substrates. However, the functionalisation of unactivated azines has been restricted because of their intrinsic low reactivity. Herein, we report a transition-metal-free, radical relay π-extension approach to produce N-doped polycyclic aromatic compounds directly from simple azines and cyclic iodonium salts. Mechanistic and electron paramagnetic resonance studies provide evidence for the in situ generation of organic electron donors, while chemical trapping and electrochemical experiments implicate an iodanyl radical intermediate serving as a formal biaryl radical equivalent. This intermediate, formed by one-electron reduction of the cyclic iodonium salt, acts as the key intermediate driving the Minisci-type arylation reaction. The synthetic utility of this radical-based annulative π-extension method is highlighted by the preparation of an N-doped heptacyclic nanographene fragment through fourfold C–H arylation. The functionalisation of unactivated azines has been restricted because of their intrinsic low reactivity. Here the authors show a transition-metal-free, radical relay π-extension approach to produce N-doped polycyclic aromatic compounds directly from simple azines and cyclic iodonium salts.

Abstract
Dendritic polyphenylenes (PPs) can serve as precursors of nanographenes (NGs) if their structures represent 2D projections without overlapping benzene rings. Here, we report the synthesis of two giant dendritic PPs fulfilling this criteria with 366 and 546 carbon atoms by applying a “layer‐by‐layer” extension strategy. Although our initial attempts on their cyclodehydrogenation toward the corresponding NGs in solution were unsuccessful, we achieved their deposition on metal substrates under ultrahigh vacuum through the electrospray technique. Scanning probe microscopy imaging provides valuable information on the possible thermally induced partial planarization of such giant dendritic PPs on a metal surface.

Abstract
Anion‐exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) are a promising, next‐generation fuel cell technology. AEMFCs require highly conductive and robust anion‐exchange membranes (AEMs), which are challenging to develop due to the tradeoff between conductivity and water uptake. Here we report a method to prepare high‐molecular‐weight branched poly(aryl piperidinium) AEMs. We show that branching reduces water uptake, leading to improved dimensional stability. The optimized membrane, b‐PTP‐2.5, exhibits simultaneously high OH− conductivity (>145 mS cm−1 at 80 °C), high mechanical strength and dimensional stability, good processability, and excellent alkaline stability (>1500 h) in 1 M KOH at 80 °C. AEMFCs based on b‐PTP‐2.5 reached peak power densities of 2.3 W cm−2 in H2−O2 and 1.3 W cm−2 in H2‐air at 80 °C. The AEMFCs can run stably under a constant current of 0.2 A cm−2 over 500 h, during which the b‐PTP‐2.5 membrane remains stable.

Abstract
The molar heat capacity of the first-generation hybrid dendrimer with a "carbosilane core/phenylene shell" structure was measured for the first time in the temperature range T = 6-600 K using a precise adiabatic vacuum calorimeter and DSC. In the above temperature interval, the glass transition of the studied compound was observed, and its thermodynamic characteristics were determined. The standard thermodynamic functions (the enthalpy, the entropy, and the Gibbs energy) of the hybrid dendrimer were calculated over the range from T = 0 to 600 K using the experimentally determined heat capacity. The standard entropy of formation of the investigated dendrimer was evaluated at T = 298.15 K. The obtained thermodynamic properties of the studied hybrid dendrimer were compared and discussed with the literature data for some of the first-generation organosilicon and pyridylphenylene dendrimers.

Abstract
Five libraries of natural and synthetic phenolic acids containing five AB3, ten constitutional isomeric AB2, one AB4, and one AB5 were previously synthesized and reported by our laboratory in 5 to 11 steps. They were employed to construct seven libraries of self-assembling dendrons, by divergent generational, deconstruction, and combined approaches, enabling the discovery of a diversity of supramolecular assemblies including Frank-Kasper phases, soft quasicrystals, and complex helical organizations, some undergoing deracemization in the crystal state. However, higher substitution patterns within a single dendron were not accessible. Here we report three libraries consisting of 30 symmetric and nonsymmetric constitutional isomeric phenolic acids with unprecedented sequenced patterns, including two AB2, three AB3, eight AB4, five AB5, six AB6, three AB7, two AB8, and one AB9 synthesized by accelerated modular-orthogonal Ni-catalyzed borylation and cross-coupling. A single etherification step with 4-(n-dodecyloxy)benzyl chloride transformed all these phenolic acids, of interest also for other applications, into self-assembling dendrons. Despite this synthetic simplicity, they led to a diversity of unprecedented self-organizing principles: lamellar structures of interest for biological membrane mimics, helical columnar assemblies from rigid-solid angle dendrons forming Tobacco Mosaic Virus-like assemblies, columnar organizations from adaptable-solid angle dendrons forming disordered micellar-like nonhelical columns, columns from supramolecular spheres, five body-centered cubic phases displaying supramolecular orientational memory, rarely encountered in previous libraries forming predominantly Frank-Kasper phases, and two Frank-Kasper phases. Lessons from these self-organizing principles, discovered within a single generation of self-assembling dendrons, may help elaborate design principles for complex helical and nonhelical organizations of synthetic and biological matter.

Abstract
The porous structure of second- and third-generation polyphenylene-type dendrimers was investigated by adsorption of N2, Ar, and CO2 gases, scanning electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray spectroscopy. Rigid dendrimers in bulk are microporous and demonstrate a molecular sieve effect. When using CO2 as an adsorbate gas, the pore size varies from 0.6 to 0.9 nm. This is most likely due to the distances between dendrimer macromolecules or branches of neighboring dendrimers, whose packing is mostly realized due to intermolecular interactions, in particular, π-π interactions of aromatic fragments. Intermolecular interactions prevent the manifestation of the porosity potential inherent to the molecular 3D structure of third-generation dendrimers, while for the second generation, much higher porosity is observed. The maximum specific surface area for the second-generation dendrimers was 467 m2/g when measured by CO2 adsorption, indicating that shorter branches of these dendrimers do not provide dense packing. This implies that the possible universal method to create porous materials for all kinds of rigid dendrimers is by a placement of bulky substituents in their outer layer.

Abstract
We report on the preparation of reinforced membranes (SPP-QP-PE, where SPP stands for sulfonated polyphenylene), composed of an in-house proton-conductive polyphenylene ionomer (SPP-QP) and a flexible porous polyethylene (PE) mechanical support layer. By applying the push coating method, dense, uniform, transparent, and thin SPP-QP-PE membranes were obtainable. The use of SPP-QP with higher ion exchange capacity induced very high proton conductivity of SPP-QP-PE, leading to high fuel cell performance even at low humidified conditions (e.g., at 80 °C and 30% relative humidity), which had not been attainable with the existing reinforced aromatic ionomer membranes. The flexible porous PE substrate improved the mechanical toughness of the membranes; the elongation at break increased by a factor of 7.1 for SPP-QP-PE compared to that with the bare SPP-QP membrane, leading to mechanical durability at least 3850 wet-dry cycles under practical fuel cell operating conditions (the United States Department of Energy protocol). Overall, the reinforced aromatic ionomer membranes, SPP-QP-PE with balanced proton conductivity, mechanical toughness, and gas impermeability, functioned well in fuel cells with high performance and durability.

Abstract
The design of multifunctional sensors based on biocompatible hybrid materials consisting of conjugated polythiophene-quantum dots for multiple environmental pollutants is a promising strategy for the development of new monitoring technologies. Herein, we present a new approach for the "on-off-on" sensing of Hg2+ and triacetone triperoxide (TATP) based on amphiphilic polythiophene-coated CdTe QDs (PQDs, PLQY ∼78%). The emission of the PQDs is quenched by Hg2+ ions via electron transfer interactions. Based on the strong interaction between TATP and Hg2+ ions, the addition of TATP to the PQD-Hg2+ complex results in a remarkable recovery of the PQD emission. Under the optimized conditions, the PQD sensor shows a good linear response to Hg2+ and TATP with detection limits of 7.4 nM and 0.055 mg L-1, respectively. Furthermore, the "on-off-on" sensor demonstrates good biocompatibility, high stability, and excellent selectivity in the presence of other metal ions and common explosives. Importantly, the proposed method can be used to determine the level of Hg2+ and TATP in environmental water samples.

Abstract
Nanographenes (NGs) and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are unique connectors between the domains of 1D-conjugated polymers and 2D-graphenes. They can be synthesized with high precision by oxidative flattening processes from dendritic or branched 3D-polyphenylene precursors. Their size, shape and edge type enable not only accurate control of classical (opto)electronic properties, but also access to unprecedented high-spin structures and exotic quantum states. NGs and GNRs serve as active components of devices such as field-effect transistors and as ideal objects for nanoscience. This field of research includes their synthesis after the deposition of suitable monomers on surfaces. An additional advantage of this novel concept is in situ monitoring of the reactions by scanning tunnelling microscopy and electronic characterization of the products by scanning tunnelling spectroscopy.

Abstract
We report the first synthesis of solvent-free pentacene fluids at room temperature together with observation of singlet fission (SF). Three pentacenes with different number of ethylene glycol (EG) side chains (n) were employed (denoted as (EG)n-Pc-(EG)n: n = 2, 3, and 4). The morphologies of these pentacenes largely depend on the lengths of EG chains (n). (EG)3-Pc-(EG)3 and (EG)4-Pc-(EG)4 indicate fluid compounds at room temperature, whereas (EG)2-Pc-(EG)2 is a solid compound. Microscopic clustering with short-range interactions between pentacene chromophores was confirmed in X-ray diffraction profiles of solvent-free fluids. Such a structural trend is an important origin of SF and consistent with the steady-state spectroscopic results. To one's surprise, femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy demonstrated that SF occurred in thin films prepared from solvent-free fluids of (EG)3-Pc-(EG)3 and (EG)4-Pc-(EG)4 in spite of such excessive EG chains.

Abstract
Time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy measurements were performed on three-branched star-shaped polymers, based on precisely synthesized poly(9,9-di-n-octyl-fluorene vinylene)s containing C6F5 end groups. The star-shaped polymers showed identical fluorescence spectra, fluorescence lifetimes, and quantum yields to those of the reference single-chain oligomer. However, a rapid fluorescence anisotropy decay was observed in two kinds of star-shaped polymers, while such decay was not seen in the corresponding single-chain oligomer. On the basis of the analysis using an incoherent hopping model, the observed rapid anisotropy decay is attributable to energy hopping processes between branches within a single polymer species, and its rate was deduced to be ca.100 ps depending upon the core part.

Abstract
The hydrogenation of hexaphenylbenzene was studied, affording novel partially hydrogenated hexacyclohexylbenzene (HCB) as well as fully hydrogenated 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexacyclohexylcyclohexane (HCC) as an unprecedented "oligocyclohexyl" molecule. The reaction process was analyzed by mass spectrometry with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization and high-performance liquid chromatography. From a crude product mixture, two different crystals with flake- and block-shapes could be grown and analyzed by X-ray crystallography, revealing their structures as HCB and HCC. While a geared arrangement of cyclohexyl substitutes was found in HCB, two isomeric structures were identified in HCC crystal with chair and twist-boat conformations of the central cyclohexane.

Abstract
This article reviews progress over the past three decades related to the role of dendrimer-based, branch cell symmetry in the development of advanced drug delivery systems, aqueous based compatibilizers/solubilizers/excipients and nano-metal cluster catalysts. Historically, it begins with early unreported work by the Tomalia Group (i.e., The Dow Chemical Co.) revealing that all known dendrimer family types may be divided into two major symmetry categories; namely: Category I: symmetrical branch cell dendrimers (e.g., Tomalia, Vögtle, Newkome-type dendrimers) possessing interior hollowness/porosity and Category II: asymmetrical branch cell dendrimers (e.g., Denkewalter-type) possessing no interior void space. These two branch cell symmetry features were shown to be pivotal in directing internal packing modes; thereby, differentiating key dendrimer properties such as densities, refractive indices and interior porosities. Furthermore, this discovery provided an explanation for unimolecular micelle encapsulation (UME) behavior observed exclusively for Category I, but not for Category II. This account surveys early experiments confirming the inextricable influence of dendrimer branch cell symmetry on interior packing properties, first examples of Category (I) based UME behavior, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) protocols for systematic encapsulation characterization, application of these principles to the solubilization of active approved drugs, engineering dendrimer critical nanoscale design parameters (CNDPs) for optimized properties and concluding with high optimism for the anticipated role of dendrimer-based solubilization principles in emerging new life science, drug delivery and nanomedical applications.

Abstract
The sizes and geometries of macrocycles assembled from ortho-phenylenes are predicted by the stabilities and bite angles of possible conformers.
Higher-order structure in abiotic foldamer systems represents an important but largely unrealized goal. As one approach to this challenge, covalent assembly can be used to assemble macrocycles with foldamer subunits in well-defined spatial relationships. Such systems have previously been shown to exhibit self-sorting, new folding motifs, and dynamic stereoisomerism, yet there remain important questions about the interplay between folding and macrocyclization and the effect of structural confinement on folding behavior. Here, we explore the dynamic covalent assembly of extended ortho-phenylenes (hexamer and decamer) with rod-shaped linkers. Characteristic 1H chemical shift differences between cyclic and acyclic systems can be compared with computational conformer libraries to determine the folding states of the macrocycles. We show that the bite angle provides a measure of the fit of an o-phenylene conformer within a shape-persistent macrocycle, affecting both assembly and ultimate folding behavior. For the o-phenylene hexamer, the bite angle and conformer stability work synergistically to direct assembly toward triangular [3 + 3] macrocycles of well-folded oligomers. For the decamer, the energetic accessibility of conformers with small bite angles allows [2 + 2] macrocycles to be formed as the predominant species. In these systems, the o-phenylenes are forced into unusual folding states, preferentially adopting a backbone geometry with distinct helical blocks of opposite handedness. The results show that simple geometric restrictions can be used to direct foldamers toward increasingly complex folds.

Abstract
Annulative π-extension chemistry provides a concise synthetic route to polycyclic arenes. Herein, we disclose a nondirected annulation approach of unactivated simple arenes. The palladium-catalyzed 2-fold C-H arylation event facilitates tandem C-C linkage relays to furnish fully benzenoid triphenylene frameworks using cyclic diaryliodonium salts. The inseparable regioisomeric mixture of 1- and 2-methyltriphenylenes is identified by the combined analysis of ion mobility-mass spectrometry, gas-phase infrared spectroscopy, and molecular simulation studies.

Abstract
Cyclometalation of a triple helical N-doped phenylene cage prepared by ruthenium(0)-catalyzed diol-diene benzannulation delivers a chiral, conformationally constrained Ir(ppy)3 analogue. Like the parent complex, fac-Ir(ppy)3 , the iridium-containing PAH-cage is phosphorescent, but displays enhanced resistance to oxygen quenching.

Abstract
Access to diverse, relatively high molecular weight soluble linear polymers without pendant solubilizing chains is the key to solution state synthesis of structurally diverse nanoribbons of conjugated materials. However, realizing soluble 1D-π-conjugated polymers without pendant solubilizing chains is a daunting task. Herein, inspired from the polypeptide β-strand architecture, we have designed and developed novel bifacial π-conjugated polymers (M n: ca. 24 kDa) that are soluble (ca. 70 to >250 mM) despite the absence of pendant solubilizing chains. The impact of varying the bifacial monomer height on polymer solubility, optical properties, and interactions with small molecules is reported.

Abstract
Photoinduced electron transfer across rigid rod-like oligo- p-phenylenes has been thoroughly investigated in the past, but their o-connected counterparts are yet entirely unexplored in this regard. We report on three molecular dyads comprised of a triarylamine donor and a Ru(bpy)32+ (bpy =2,2'-bipyridine) acceptor connected covalently by 2 to 6 o-phenylene units. Pulsed excitation of the Ru(II) sensitizer at 532 nm leads to the rapid formation of oxidized triarylamine and reduced ruthenium complex via intramolecular electron transfer. The subsequent thermal reverse charge-shift reaction to reinstate the electronic ground-state occurs on a time scale of 120-220 ns in deaerated CH3CN at 25 °C. The conformational flexibility of the o-phenylene bridges causes multiexponential transient absorption kinetics for the photoinduced forward process, but the thermal reverse reaction produces single-exponential transient absorption decays. The key finding is that the flexible o-phenylene bridges permit rapid formation of photoproducts storing ca. 1.7 eV of energy with lifetimes on the order of hundreds of nanoseconds, similar to what is possible with rigid rod-like donor-acceptor compounds. Thus, the conformational flexibility of the o-phenylenes represents no disadvantage with regard to the photoproduct lifetimes, and this is relevant in the greater context of light-to-chemical energy conversion.
