Development of Ion Chemosensors Based on Porphyrin Analogues

Aza-BODIPY-based logic gate chemosensors and their applications

Dimethylaniline-substituted aza-BODIPY dyes (DA, DM, DP) were designed and synthesized aiming for ion detection. The Zn2+ recognition ability was found in all compounds and the binding mechanism was possibly via dimethylaniline sites linked to the aza-BODIPY core. Upon Zn2+ addition, the new absorption band and the color change occurred due to the altered charge transfer of the adducts. The custom-made colorimeter was successfully integrated into the dye's application, demonstrating a good linear relationship between resistance values and Zn2+ concentration. The chromophore test strips were fabricated and exhibited distinct color changes upon aqueous Zn2+ exposure. The compound DA also exhibits logical behavior with DA-Zn2+-Cu2+ system. In terms of environmental hazards, the compounds exhibited no adverse effect on Pseudomonas putida at the concentration level of 0.2 mg/mL. These findings indicated that all synthesized aza-BODIPYs might be suitable for chemosensor probes for Zn2+ detection with possibly low environmental risk.

Synthesis of π-Ring-Fused Porphyrin(2.1.1.1)s and Their Rh(I) Complexes

Stable and simplest expanded porphyrins, π-ring-fused porphyrin(2.1.1.1)s and Rh(I) complexes, have been obtained for the first time. Two free bases show chair-shaped molecular conformations, as if reassembled by the halves of porphyrin(1.1.1.1) and porphyrin(2.1.2.1). The insertion of Rh(CO)2 groups induced more twisted molecular conformations. The NMR spectra, X-ray structure, NICS, and ACID of obtained molecules all support their nonaromaticity due to chair-shaped molecular conformations. The protonated and Rh(I) coordination of porphyrin(2.1.1.1)s process red-shifted absorptions in the NIR region.

Can Porphyrin-Triphenylphosphonium Conjugates Enhance the Photosensitizer Performance Toward Bacterial Strains?

Antimicrobial photodynamic treatment (aPDT) offers an alternative option for combating microbial pathogens, and in this way, addressing the challenges of growing antimicrobial resistance. In this promising and effective approach, cationic porphyrins and related macrocycles have emerged as leading photosensitizers (PS) for aPDT. In general, their preparation occurs via N-alkylation of nitrogen-based moieties with alkyl halides, which limits the ability to fine-tune the features of porphyrin-based PS. Herein, is reported that the conjugation of porphyrin macrocycles with triphenylphosphonium units created a series of effective cationic porphyrin-based PS for aPDT. The presence of positive charges at both the porphyrin macrocycle and triphenylphosphonium moieties significantly enhances the photodynamic activity of porphyrin-based PS against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. Moreover, bacterial photoinactivation is achieved with a notable reduction in irradiation time, exceeding 50%, compared to 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin (TMPyP), used as the reference and known as good PS. The improved capability of the porphyrin macrocycle to generate singlet oxygen combined with the enhanced membrane interaction promoted by the presence of triphenylphosphonium moieties represents a promising approach to developing porphyrin-based PS with enhanced photosensitizing activity.

Oxochlorin frameworks confining a β-hydroxyketone moiety

Nominally, meso-hydroxyoxochlorins, like known 5-hydroxy-7-oxo-octaethylchlorin (9), its nickel complex [5-hydroxy-7-oxo-octaethylchlorinato]nickel(II) (9Ni), or the novel 5-hydroxy-7,17-dioxo-octaethylbacteriochlorin (10), incorporate an acetylacetonate (acac)-moiety in the enol form in their chromophore structures. X-Ray diffraction studies of the compounds show the presence of a strong H-bond between the enol and flanking β-ketone. Like acac, the functionality can be deprotonated. However, unlike regular acac-like moieties, we did not find any indication that this functionality is competent in chelating any of the 3d or 4d transition metal ions tested. Evidently, the conjugation that contributes to the stability of acac as a ligand cannot be expressed in the meso-hydroxyoxochlorins since it would perturb the aromaticity of the porphyrinic chromophores; in other words, the metal binding energies do not offset the loss in aromaticity. The halochromic properties of the molecules provide some more insight into the location of the protonation/deprotonation sites. The interpretation of the findings is supported by computations.

Porphyrin-Grafted Poly(ethylene terephthalate) as a Reusable and Highly Selective Colorimetric Probe for Mercuric Ion Contaminants in Aqueous Samples

Heavy metals are the most hazardous water pollutants, with severe health and environmental consequences. Among these, mercuric (Hg2+) ions are known to cause detrimental health issues in both humans and aquatic life. Due to this, several analytical techniques have been devised to detect and quantify the amount of this ion. However, most of these require advanced instrumentation, prolonged analysis time, and sample preparation. In this study, a low-cost and highly reusable colorimetric probe was developed by grafting porphyrin to poly(ethylene terephthalate) sheets using an oxazoline polymer as covalent adhesive. Upon exposure to trace amounts of Hg2+ in solution, the fabricated material visually transitioned from faint brownish pink to green by the complexation mechanism. Additionally, the transparency of this probe allowed the quantitative spectrophotometric determination of the Hg2+ concentration in aqueous samples. It was also shown that the material is highly stable, which can be reused for more than 50 times without significant decline in its performance, hence, making it suitable for the onsite monitoring of mercuric ion contamination in different bodies of water.

Colorimetric sensing for translational applications: from colorants to mechanisms

Colorimetric sensing offers instant reporting via visible signals. Versus labor-intensive and instrument-dependent detection methods, colorimetric sensors present advantages including short acquisition time, high throughput screening, low cost, portability, and a user-friendly approach. These advantages have driven substantial growth in colorimetric sensors, particularly in point-of-care (POC) diagnostics. Rapid progress in nanotechnology, materials science, microfluidics technology, biomarker discovery, digital technology, and signal pattern analysis has led to a variety of colorimetric reagents and detection mechanisms, which are fundamental to advance colorimetric sensing applications. This review first summarizes the basic components (e.g., color reagents, recognition interactions, and sampling procedures) in the design of a colorimetric sensing system. It then presents the rationale design and typical examples of POC devices, e.g., lateral flow devices, microfluidic paper-based analytical devices, and wearable sensing devices. Two highlighted colorimetric formats are discussed: combinational and activatable systems based on the sensor-array and lock-and-key mechanisms, respectively. Case discussions in colorimetric assays are organized by the analyte identities. Finally, the review presents challenges and perspectives for the design and development of colorimetric detection schemes as well as applications. The goal of this review is to provide a foundational resource for developing colorimetric systems and underscoring the colorants and mechanisms that facilitate the continuing evolution of POC sensors.

Chirality Sensing of Chiral Carboxylic Acids by a Ureido-Linked Zinc Bisporphyrinate

We designed and synthesized a ureido-linked zinc bisporphyrinate [Zn2(UBis)]. CD spectra show that this zinc bisporphyrinate has the ability to sense the chirality of chiral carboxylic acids without derivatization. Our studies suggest that the phenyl ring in the linker forms π-π interactions with porphyrin planes and that the carboxylic acid is coordinated to the zinc in the host-guest complex. DFT calculations show that the bisporphyrin adopts a "Z"-shaped configuration, and that the ureido group forms hydrogen bonds with carboxylic acids. The combination of π-π interactions, coordination interactions and hydrogen bonding interactions leads to the chirality sensing ability of [Zn2(UBis)].

Synthesis of Vanadyl Complexes of N-Confused Porphyrins and Their Bromoperoxidase-like Catalytic Activity

Two new vanadyl complexes of N-confused porphyrins (NCPs), [VONCTPP] (V-1) and [VONCP(OMe)8] (V-2), have been synthesized for the first time and investigated as a catalyst for the oxidative bromination reaction of phenol and its derivatives. This article further delineates crystal structures, photophysical, and redox properties of both the vanadyl complexes. Complexes V-1 and V-2 exhibited a significant red shift in their absorption spectra compared with their respective free bases. The single-crystal structure of V-1 revealed that the complex is in the 2H tautomeric form, while EPR studies revealed the +4 oxidation state of vanadium metal having an axial compression with dxy1 configuration. Catalytic potential for bromoperoxidases-like activity has been explored for both complexes V-1 and V-2 for the first time in NCP chemistry with excellent TOF values (4.7-6.3 s-1 for V-1 and 7.3-8.7 s-1 for V-2) using KBr as a source of bromine and H2O2 as a green oxidant in aqueous acidic medium at 298 K. Notably, both catalysts show excellent recyclability over five cycles. The vanadyl-metalated NCPs exhibit excellent stability in the air.

2,5-Thienylene-Strapped [26]Hexaphyrin as Multifunctional Chemosensor for Hg2+, Cu2+, and F- Ions

The sensing behavior of 2,5-thienylene-bridged tetrakis(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-[26]hexaphyrin (2) towards various metal ions and anions were investigated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. Using this strapped hexaphyrin (2), the molecular sensor displayed highly selective and sensitive colorimetric responses to Cu2+ and Hg2+ in MeOH/THF. The spectral changes are distinctive enough in the visible region of the spectrum to enable naked-eye detection. The detection limits of Cu2+ and Hg2+ using this chemo-sensor in a mixed MeOH/THF solution were 1.978 and 1.283 μM, respectively, and 1.052 μM for F- in dichloromethane. Chemosensor 2,5-thienylene strapped [26]hexaphyrin (2) shows absorption responses both a 1 : 1 molecular ratio for 2 interacting with Cu2+ and Hg2+ and a 1 : 2 ratio between 2 and F- ions.

Three-dimensional donor-acceptor conjugated porous polymers based on metal-porphyrin and triazine for highly effective photodegradation of organic pollutants in water

Three-dimensional donor-acceptor (D-A) type conjugated porous polymers (CPPs) was designed and synthesized via imine condensation of copper tetraaminoporphyrin (CuTAPP) as donor and 1,3,5-tris-(4-formyl phenyl) triazine (TFPT) as acceptor, named as CuPT-CPP. The CuPT-CPP possesses a high specific surface area (73.7 m2/g) and excellent photophysical properties. The simultaneous introduction of the organometallic molecules and D-A structures in CuPT-CPP could be broadened the visible-light response range (400-800 nm) and facilitated efficient photogenerated carrier separation and transportation. As heterogeneous photocatalysts, CuPT-CPP has excellent photocatalytic performances under visible light irradiation, leading to excellent model pollutant rhodamine B degradation efficiency up to about 100% in 3 h, it has superb stability and reusability during the photocatalytic processes, and CuPT-CPP also exhibited broad substrate adaptability, which could photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). This work indicates that three-dimensional D-A type porphyrin- and triazine-based CuPT-CPP has great potential in the practical application of photocatalysis.

Zinc porphyrin/MXene hybrids with phosphate-induced stimuli-responsive behavior for dual-mode fluorescent/electrochemiluminescent ratiometric biosensing

Highly sensitive ratiometric biosensors have attracted much attention in biomarker detection, but most rely on single-mode signals, which can affect accuracy. The development of new principles and methods for dual-mode ratiometric sensing can enhance detection accuracy. Herein, the zinc(II) meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin/MXene (ZnTCPP/Ti3C2Tx) hybrids with phosphate-induced stimuli-responsive behavior are used to develop a novel dual-mode fluorescent/electrochemiluminescent (FL/ECL) ratiometric biosensor. The composites exhibit FL quenching and enhanced ECL behavior involving dissolved O2. The FL quenching of ZnTCPP/Ti3C2Tx is caused by energy transfer (EnT) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET) from ZnTCPP to Ti3C2Tx. While the introduction of MXene compensates for the inadequate conductivity of ZnTCPP, facilitating electron transfer, which further makes the surface ZnTCPP more capable of activating O2 to produce singlet oxygen (1O2), thereby generating enhanced cathodic ECL. Furthermore, phosphate ions (PO43-) can interact with the Ti sites of ZnTCPP/Ti3C2Tx, leading to competition for coordination with ZnTCPP, which in turn detaches ZnTCPP, resulting in enhanced FL and reduced ECL. On the basis of the phosphate-induced stimuli-responsive behavior, the dual-mode FL/ECL ratiometric biosensing of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is achieved through ALP-catalyzed production of PO43- cascade effect with ZnTCPP/Ti3C2Tx. The linear detection range for ALP is 0.1-50 mU/mL, with a detection limit as low as 0.0083 mU/mL. This proposed ZnTCPP/Ti3C2Tx composites with stimuli-responsive behavior is expected to provide new ideas for the development of high-sensitivity dual-mode ratiometric biosensors with promising applications in the precise detection of important biomarkers.

Rational and controllable syntheses of variants of modified N-confused N-fused porphodimethenes and a porphotrimethene with adaptive properties

Retrosynthetic design and synthesis with structural isolation of two unprecedented core modified N-confused N-fused porphodimethene-like porphyrinoids possessing a [5.5.5.5] tetracyclic ring with tunable photophysical properties is reported. The solid-state X-ray crystal structure reveals the expected cis geometry for the meso-sp3 carbons. Controlled chemical oxidation of the porphodimethene analogue 11 bearing the N-confused pyrrole moiety to the corresponding porphotrimethene 12 has been achieved in quantitative yield, while 10 bearing the N-methyl N-confused pyrrole moiety remained unsusceptible to chemical oxidation. All three S2N3 hybrid N-confused N-fused porphodi(tri)methene-like porphyrinoids 10-12 could recognize the fluoride anion with high selectivity; however, porphodimethene 10 and porphotrimethene 12 do so via deprotonation rather than an anion recognition based mechanism as has been anticipated in the case of porphodimethene 11.

Phenyliodine bis(trifluoroacetate) as a sustainable reagent: exploring its significance in organic synthesis

Iodine-containing molecules, especially hypervalent iodine compounds, have gained significant attention in organic synthesis. They are valuable and sustainable reagents, leading to a remarkable surge in their use for chemical transformations. One such hypervalent iodine compound, phenyliodine bis(trifluoroacetate)/bis(trifluoroacetoxy)iodobenzene, commonly referred to as PIFA, has emerged as a prominent candidate due to its attributes of facile manipulation, moderate reactivity, low toxicity, and ready availability. PIFA presents an auspicious prospect as a substitute for costly organometallic catalysts and environmentally hazardous oxidants containing heavy metals. PIFA exhibits remarkable catalytic activity, facilitating an array of consequential organic reactions, including sulfenylation, alkylarylation, oxidative coupling, cascade reactions, amination, amidation, ring-rearrangement, carboxylation, and numerous others. Over the past decade, the application of PIFA in synthetic chemistry has witnessed substantial growth, necessitating an updated exploration of this field. In this discourse, we present a concise overview of PIFA's applications as a 'green' reagent in the domain of synthetic organic chemistry. A primary objective of this article is to bring to the forefront the scientific community's awareness of the merits associated with adopting PIFA as an environmentally conscientious alternative to heavy metals.

Template Assisted Formation of 32 and 34π Octaphyrins Embedded with Dithienopyrrole Cores: A New Scaffold to Unravel Proton Coupled Redox Switching and (Anti)Aromaticity

Herein, we report two distinct octaphyrins obtained by the condensation of new dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole based tetrapyrrane under two different acidic conditions. Fourfold meso-substituted octaphyrin was the major product when the reaction was performed in the presence of an aryl aldehyde using trifluoroacetic acid. Whereas, the sixfold meso-substituted octaphyrin was obtained when the precursor was condensed with pentafluorobenzaldehyde using para-toluenesulfonic acid. Such a template effect of aryl aldehydes in oxidative coupling reactions is realized for the first time in literature. Experimental and theoretical studies suggested that the oxidized form of fourfold meso-substituted octaphyrin is 32π antiaromatic and undergoes proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) to the protonated form of 34π aromatic congener upon treatment with protic acids. Furthermore, small organic molecules such as alcohols and amines were also found to promote chemical reduction. Single crystal X-ray structure revealed that the aromatic counterpart is highly planar and stabilized by several intermolecular H-bonding and F-F interactions, leading to a large 3D supramolecular arrangement and exhibited colorimetric sensing for fluoride and hydroxide anions. On the other hand, sixfold meso-substituted octaphyrin did not show (anti)aromatic features, PCET or anion sensing, but its intriguing absorption features associated with protonation could make it an ideal candidate for pH-dependent bioimaging.

The new role of dipyrromethene chemosensor for absorbance-ratiometic and fluorescence "turn-on" sensing Zn2+ ions in water-organic solutions and real water samples

This study presents a dipyrromethene-based sensitive and selective probe for Zn2+ ions detection in aqueous and water-organic media. The probe demonstrates absorbance-ratiometric and "off-on" fluorescent sensing for Zn2+ in a DMSO/H2O (9:1, v/v) mixture. The 3,3',4,4',5,5'-hexamethyl-2,2'-dipyrromethene (HL), similar to its analogs, exhibits weak fluorescence (with a quantum yield of less than 0.001). However, upon the presence of Zn2+ ions in the sensor HL solution, there is a remarkable increase (up to 200-fold) in fluorescence intensity due to the formation of a stable intramolecular chelate complex [ZnL2]. This complex formation induces a significant hyperchromic effect and a red shift (57 nm) in the characteristic absorption bands. The sensing mechanism of the probe towards Zn2+ ions was thoroughly investigated through absorbance and fluorescent titrations, molar ratio plots, 1H NMR, and DFT/TDDFT studies. The fluorescence response exhibited a strong linear relationship with Zn2+ concentration within the range of 0 to 5.7 × 10-6 mol/L. The detection limit (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LoQ) for Zn2+ were determined as 2 × 10-8 mol/L and 6.6 × 10-8 mol/L, respectively. Moreover, the probe demonstrated high selectivity for Zn2+ ions over other metal ions (Na+, Mg2+, Al3+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Pd2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Pb2+). Test systems in the form of test-strips and cotton-pads were developed based on the dipyrromethene sensor for rapid "naked-eye" detection of zinc ions in water. The sensor was successfully applied for detecting Zn2+ ions in real water samples.

A phenothiazine-functionalized pyridine-based AIEE-active molecule: a versatile molecular probe for highly sensitive detection of hypochlorite and picric acid

In this study, we designed and synthesized a novel compound (PTH-AB-PY) based on phenothiazine and pyridine moieties with aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) properties. The compound has shown exceptional selectivity and sensitivity towards ClO- ions with an impressive detection limit of 6.86 × 10-4 M. Its remarkable sensitivity arises from its effective inhibition of the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. Job's plot analysis and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS) confirmed the 1 : 1 binding ratio between the compound and ClO-. The synthesized compound also exhibits higher sensitivity and fluorescence quenching towards the explosive species (picric acid), with a detection limit of around 1.44 × 10-6 M. Furthermore, our work was carried out for real-time water sample analysis to check ClO- and picric acid detection and high recovery rates (94 to 99%) were achieved. These findings highlight the potential of PTH-AB-PY as a promising molecular probe for ClO- ions and picric acid detection with various analytical and environmental applications.

Biomedical Application of Porphyrin-Based Amphiphiles and Their Self-Assembled Nanomaterials

Porphyrins have been vastly explored and applied in many cutting-edge fields with plenty of encouraging achievements because of their excellent properties. As important derivatives of porphyrins, porphyrin-based amphiphiles (PBAs) not only maintain the advanced properties of porphyrins (catalysis, imaging, and energy transfer) but also possess self-assembly and encapsulation capability in aqueous solution. Accordingly, PBAs and their self-assembles have had important roles in diagnosing and treating tumors and inflammation lesions in vivo, but not limited to these. In this article, we introduce the research progress of PBAs, including their constitution, structure design strategies, and performances in tumor and inflammation lesion diagnosis and treatments. On that basis, the defects of synthesized PBAs during their application and the possible effective strategies to overcome the limitations are also proposed. Finally, perspectives on PBAs exploration are updated based on our knowledge. We hope this review will bring researchers from various domains insights about PBAs.

Near-Infrared Fluoride Sensing Nano-Optodes and Distance-Based Hydrogels Containing Aluminum-Phthalocyanine

Fluoride ions are highly relevant in environmental and biological sciences, and there is a very limited number of established fluoride chemical sensors. Previous fluoride-selective optodes were demonstrated with metal-porphyrin as the ionophore and required a chromoionophore for optical signal transduction. We demonstrate here novel optical fluoride sensing with nano-optodes containing an aluminum-phthalocyanine complex (AlClPc) as the single active sensing component, simplifying the conventional ion-selective optodes approach. The fluoride nano-optodes were interrogated in the absorbance and fluorescence modes in the near-infrared region, with absorption around 725 nm and emission peaks at 720 and 800 nm, respectively. The nano-optodes exhibited a lower detection limit around 0.1 μM and good selectivity over a range of common anions including ClO4-, Cl-, Br-, I-, SO42-, NO3-, and AcO-. Furthermore, the nano-optodes were physically entrapped in agarose hydrogels to allow distance-based point-of-care testing (POCT) applications. The 3D networks of the agarose hydrogel were able to filter off large particulates in the samples without stopping fluoride ions to reach the nano-optodes. The fluoride concentrations in real samples including river water, mineral water, and groundwater were successfully determined with the distance-based sensing hydrogel, and the results agreed well with those from commercial fluoride electrodes. Therefore, the results in this work lay the groundwork for the optical detection of fluoride in environmental samples without very sophisticated sample manipulation.

Efficient Strategies to Use β-Cationic Porphyrin-Imidazolium Derivatives in the Photoinactivation of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is a critical global health issue and the development of alternatives to conventional antibiotics is of the upmost relevance. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is considered a promising and innovative approach for the photoinactivation of microorganisms, particularly in cases where traditional antibiotics may be less effective due to resistance or other limitations. In this study, two β-modified monocharged porphyrin-imidazolium derivatives were efficiently incorporated into polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) formulations and supported into graphitic carbon nitride materials. Both porphyrin-imidazolium derivatives displayed remarkable photostability and the ability to generate cytotoxic singlet oxygen. These properties, which have an important impact on achieving an efficient photodynamic effect, were not compromised after incorporation/immobilization. The prepared PVP-porphyrin formulations and the graphitic carbon nitride-based materials displayed excellent performance as photosensitizers to photoinactivate methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (99.9999% of bacteria) throughout the antimicrobial photodynamic therapy. In each matrix, the most rapid action against S. aureus was observed when using PS 2. The PVP-2 formulation needed 10 min of exposure to white light at 5.0 µm, while the graphitic carbon nitride hybrid GCNM-2 required 20 min at 25.0 µm to achieve a similar level of response. These findings suggest the potential of graphitic carbon nitride-porphyrinic hybrids to be used in the environmental or clinical fields, avoiding the use of organic solvents, and might allow for their recovery after treatment, improving their applicability for bacteria photoinactivation.

Stable Inner 2H Tautomer of N-Confused-like Porphyrin Embedded with a Carbazole Subunit: Synthesis, Metal Coordination, and Magnetic and Anion Sensing Studies

A new class of N-confused porphyrin 1 embedded with a carbazole subunit was prepared via [3 + 1] acid-catalyzed condensation of appropriate precursors. 1 underwent smooth metal complexation with Pd(II) and Cu(II) salts to provide the corresponding diamagnetic 1-Pd and paramagnetic 1-Cu, respectively. The single-crystal X-ray structure of 1-Pd is evident with a square-planar Pd-center through C-H activation of inverted pyrrole. Superconducting quantum interference device analysis combined with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results provided insights into the paramagnetic nature of 1-Cu. Further, a ratiometric enhancement of near-IR fluorescence at 746 nm was found to be reversible upon adding CN- and F- ions. The solid-state structure of 1-Pd confirms that the anionic species is due to NH deprotonation.

Advances and opportunities in Group 15 porphyrin chemistry

The chemistry of Group 15 porphyrins has been established relatively well among the main-group porphyrins. Thus far phosphorus(III), phosphorus(V), arsenic(III), arsenic(V), antimony(III), antimony(V), and bismuth(III) porphyrins have been reported. Their unique axial-bonding ability, rich redox, and optical properties offer an advantage over other main-group or transition metal porphyrins. They could be excellent candidates for a variety of applications such as solar energy harvesting, molecular electronics, molecular catalysis, and biomedical applications. Despite these unique properties, the Group 15 porphyrins are not exploited at their fullest capacity. Recently, there has been some interest, where the richness of Group 15 porphyrin chemistry was explored for some of the above applications. In this context, this article summarizes recent advances in Group 15 porphyrin chemistry and attempts to unravel the tremendous opportunities of these remarkable porphyrins.

Luminous Insights: Exploring Organic Fluorescent "Turn-On" Chemosensors for Metal-Ion (Cu+2, Al+3, Zn+2, Fe+3) Detection

There are several metal ions that are vital for the growth of the environmental field as well as for the biological field but only up to the maximum limit. If they are present in excess, it could be hazardous for the human health. With the growing technology, a series of various detection techniques are employed in order to recognize those metal ions, some of them include voltammetry, electrochemical methods, inductively couples, etc. However, these techniques are expensive, time consuming, requires large storage, advanced instrumentation, and a skilled person to operate. So, here comes the need of a sensor and it is defined as a miniature device which detects the substance of interest by giving response in the form of energy change. So, from past few decades, many sensors have been formulated for detecting metal ions with some basic characteristics like selectivity, specificity, sensitivity, high accuracy, lower detection limit, and response time. Detecting various metal ions by employing chemosensors involves different techniques such as fluorescence, phosphorescence, chemiluminescence, electrochemical, and colorimetry. The fluorescence technique has certain advantages over the other techniques. This review mainly focuses on the chemosensors that show a signal in the form of fluorescence to detect Al+3, Zn+2, Cu+2, and Fe+3 ions.

Cofacial porphyrin organic cages. Metals regulating excitation electron transfer and CO2 reduction electrocatalytic properties

Herein, we introduce a comprehensive study of the photophysical behaviors and CO2 reduction electrocatalytic properties of a series of cofacial porphyrin organic cages (CPOC-M, M = H2, Co(ii), Ni(ii), Cu(ii), Zn(ii)), which are constructed by the covalent-bonded self-assembly of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)porphyrin (TFPP) and chiral (2-aminocyclohexyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetraformyl diimide (ANDI), followed by post-synthetic metalation. Electronic coupling between the TFPP donor and naphthalene-1,4 : 5,8-bis(dicarboximide) (NDI) acceptor in the metal-free cage is revealed to be very weak by UV-vis spectroscopic, electrochemical, and theoretical investigations. Photoexcitation of CPOC-H2, as well as its post-synthetic Zn and Co counterparts, leads to fast energy transfer from the triplet state porphyrin to the NDI unit according to the femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopic results. In addition, CPOC-Co enables much better electrocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction reaction than the other metallic CPOC-M (M = Ni(ii), Cu(ii), Zn(ii)) and monomeric porphyrin cobalt compartment, supplying a partial current density of 18.0 mA cm-2 at -0.90 V with 90% faradaic efficiency of CO.

Non-isothermal cold crystallization of liquid crystalline porphyrins

A series of liquid crystalline porphyrins was synthesized, purified, and characterized. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and hot-stage polarized optical microscopy (HS-POM) revealed that the porphyrins in the series with shorter alkyl arm lengths exhibit kinetic cold crystallization, wherein the molecules spontaneously organize into large, disc-like structures that remain stable upon cooling. Using DSC, the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters related to these materials were determined. Analysis of non-isothermal crystallization revealed the presence of multiple nucleation and growth processes related to cold crystallization.

Advances and prospects of porphyrin derivatives in the energy field

At present, porphyrin is developing rapidly in the fields of medicine, energy, catalysts, etc. More and more reports on its application are being published. This paper mainly takes the ingenious utilization of porphyrin derivatives in perovskite solar cells, dye-sensitized solar cells, and lithium batteries as the background to review the design idea of functional materials based on the porphyrin structural unit in the energy sector. In addition, the modification and improvement strategies of porphyrin are presented by visually showing the molecular structures or the design synthesis routes of its functional materials. Finally, we provide some insights into the development of novel energy storage materials based on porphyrin frameworks.

A new benzothiazole azo dye colorimetric chemosensor for detecting Pb2+ ion

In this work, a new benzothiazole azo dye sensor (BTS) was synthesized, and its cation binding affinity was studied using the colorimetric method, UV-vis, and ¹H NMR spectral data. The results revealed that the sensor BTS exhibits a remarkable tendency for Pb²⁺ ion to perform spontaneous visual color change from blue (BTS) to pink (BTS + Pb²⁺), without any color change in the aqueous solutions of other cations such as Hg²⁺, Cu²⁺, Al³⁺, Ni²⁺, Cd²⁺, Ag⁺_, Ba²⁺, K⁺, Co²⁺, Mg²⁺, Na⁺, Ca²⁺, Fe²⁺, and Fe³⁺ ions. The observed selectivity could be due to the formation of the complex (BTS + Pb²⁺⁾, which led to a blue shift from 586 nm (BTS) to 514 nm (BTS + Pb²⁺) in the UV spectrum. The job's plot provided the stoichiometry ratio of the complex (BTS + Pb²⁺) to be 1:1. The limit of detection (LOD) of BTS for Pb²⁺ ion sensing was obtained at 0.67 µM. Additionally, the binding constant for BTS toward Pb ²⁺ ion was studied using the Benesi-Hildebrand equation. As a result of the BTS test paper strips investigations, it was found that the synthesized sensor BTS could be used as a rapid colorimetric chemosensor for the detection of the Pb²⁺ ions in the distilled, tap, and sea waters.

Recent Progress on Fluorescent Probes in Heavy Metal Determinations for Food Safety: A Review

One of the main challenges faced in food safety is the accumulation of toxic heavy metals from environmental sources, which can sequentially endanger human health when they are consumed. It is invaluable to establish a practical assay for the determination of heavy metals for food safety. Among the current detection methods, technology based on fluorescent probes, with the advantages of sensitivity, convenience, accuracy, cost, and reliability, has recently shown pluralistic applications in the food industry, which is significant to ensure food safety. Hence, this review systematically presents the recent progress on novel fluorescent probes in determining heavy metals for food safety over the past five years, according to fluorophores and newly emerging sensing cores, which could contribute to broadening the prospects of fluorescent materials and establishing more practical assays for heavy metal determinations.

Activatable Graphene Quantum-Dot-Based Nanotransformers for Long-Period Tumor Imaging and Repeated Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is considered as an emerging therapeutic modality against cancer with high spatiotemporal selectivity because the utilized photosensitizers (PSs) are only active and toxic upon light irradiation. To maximize its effectiveness, PDT is usually applied repetitively for ablating various tumors. However, the total overdose of PSs from repeated administrations causes severe side effects. Herein, acidity-activated graphene quantum dots-based nanotransformers (GQD NT) are developed as PS vehicles for long-period tumor imaging and repeated PDT. Under the guidance of Arg-Gly-Asp peptide, GQD NT targets to tumor tissues actively, and then loosens and enlarges in tumor acidity, thus promising long tumor retention. Afterwards, GQD NT transforms into small pieces for better penetration in tumor. Upon laser irradiation, GQD NT generates mild hyperthermia that enhances cell membrane permeability and further promotes the PSs uptake. Most intriguingly, the as-prepared GQD NT not only "turns-on" fluorescence/magnetic resonance signals, but also achieves efficient repeated PDT. Notably, the total PSs dose is reduced to 3.5 µmol kg^-1 , which is 10-30 times lower than that of other reported works. Overall, this study exploits a smart vehicle to enhance accumulation, retention, and release of PSs in tumors through programmed deformation, thus overcoming the overdose obstacle in repeated PDT.

Bioinspired Framework Catalysts: From Enzyme Immobilization to Biomimetic Catalysis

Enzymatic catalysis has fueled considerable interest from chemists due to its high efficiency and selectivity. However, the structural complexity and vulnerability hamper the application potentials of enzymes. Driven by the practical demand for chemical conversion, there is a long-sought quest for bioinspired catalysts reproducing and even surpassing the functions of natural enzymes. As nanoporous materials with high surface areas and crystallinity, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent an exquisite case of how natural enzymes and their active sites are integrated into porous solids, affording bioinspired heterogeneous catalysts with superior stability and customizable structures. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the advances of bioinspired MOFs for catalysis, discuss the design principle of various MOF-based catalysts, such as MOF-enzyme composites and MOFs embedded with active sites, and explore the utility of these catalysts in different reactions. The advantages of MOFs as enzyme mimetics are also highlighted, including confinement, templating effects, and functionality, in comparison with homogeneous supramolecular catalysts. A perspective is provided to discuss potential solutions addressing current challenges in MOF catalysis.

Review on Isatin- A Remarkable Scaffold for Designing Potential Therapeutic Complexes and Its Macrocyclic Complexes with Transition Metals

Role of synthetic coordination chemistry in pharmaceutical science is expeditiously increased due to its sundry relevances in this field. The present review endows the synthesized macrocyclic complexes of transition metal ions containing isatin and its derivatives as ligand precursors, their characterization and their copious pharmaceutical applications. Isatin (1H-Indole-2,3-dione) is a protean compound (presence of lactam and keto moiety permits to change its molecular framework) that can be obtained from marine animals, plants, and is also found in mammalian tissues and in human fluids as a metabolite of amino acids. It can be used for the synthesis of miscellaneous organic and inorganic complexes and for designing of drugs since it has remarkable utility in pharmaceutical industry due to its wide range of biological and pharmacological activities, for instance anti-microbial, anti-HIV, anti-tubercular, anti-cancer, anti-viral, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic, analgesic activity, anti-Parkinson's disease, anti-convulsant etc. This review provides extensive information about the latest methods for the synthesis of isatin or its substituted derivatives based macrocyclic complexes of transition metals and their plentiful applications in medicinal chemistry.

Synthesis, Spectral, Redox, and Sensing Studies of β-Dicyanovinyl-Appended Corroles and Their Metal Complexes

A new family of β-dicyanovinyl (DCV)-appended corroles represented as MTPC(MN) (where M = 3H, Cu, Ag, and Co(PPh₃) and MN = malononitrile and TPC = 5,10,15-triphenylcorrole) were synthesized starting from the free base mono β-formyl corrole, H₃TPC(CHO), and characterized along with their respective MTPC(CHO) and MTPC complexes as to their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties in nonaqueous media. Comparisons between the two series of corroles demonstrate a pronounced substituent effect of the β-DCV group on the physicochemical properties making the MTPC(MN) derivatives substantially easier to reduce and more difficult to oxidize than the formyl or unsubstituted corroles. In addition, the colorimetric and spectral detection of 11 different anions (X) in the form of tetrabutylammonium salts (TBAX, X = PF₆^-, OAc^-, H₂PO₄^-, CN^-, HSO₄^-, NO₃^-, ClO₄^-, F^-, Cl^-, Br^-, and I^-) were also investigated in nonaqueous media. Of the investigated anions, only CN^- was found to induce changes in the UV-vis and ¹H NMR spectra of the β-DCV metallocorroles. This data revealed that CuTPC(MN) and AgTPC(MN) act as chemodosimeters for selective cyanide ion detection via a nucleophilic attack at the vinylic carbon of the DCV substituent, while (PPh₃)CoTPC(MN) acts as a chemosensor for cyanide ion sensing via axial coordination to the cobalt metal center. A low-limit detection of cyanide ions was observed at 1.69 ppm for CuTPC(MN) and 1.17 ppm for AgTPC(MN) in toluene.

Facile Synthesis of β-Tetracyano Vanadyl Porphyrin from Its Tetrabromo Analogue and Its Excellent Catalytic Activity for Bromination and Epoxidation Reactions

Complex 2,3,12,13-tetracyano-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinatooxidovanadium(IV) {[V^IVOTPP(CN)₄], 2} has been prepared by nucleophilic substitution of β-bromo groups of the corresponding 2,3,12,13-tetrabromo-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinatooxidovanadium(IV) {[V^IVOTPP(Br)₄], 1} using CuCN in quinoline. Both complexes show biomimetic catalytic activity similar to enzyme haloperoxidases and efficiently brominate various phenol derivatives in the presence of KBr, H₂O₂, and HClO₄ in the aqueous medium. Between these two complexes, 2 exhibits excellent catalytic activity with high turnover frequency (35.5-43.3 s^-1) due to the strong electron-withdrawing nature of the cyano groups attached at β-positions and its moderate nonplanar structure as compared to 1 (TOF = 22.1-27.4 s^-1). Notably, this is the highest turnover frequency value observed for any porphyrin system. The selective epoxidation of various terminal alkenes using complex 2 has also been carried out, and the results are good, specifying the importance of electron-withdrawing cyano groups. Catalysts 1 and 2 are recyclable, and the catalytic activity proceeds through the corresponding [V^VO(OH)TPP(Br)₄] and [V^VO(OH)TPP(CN)₄] intermediates, respectively.

Solution-Processed Functionalized Graphene Film Prepared by Vacuum Filtration for Flexible NO2 Sensors

Large-scale production of graphene nanosheets (GNSs) has led to the availability of solution-processable GNSs on the commercial scale. The controlled vacuum filtration method is a scalable process for the preparation of wafer-scale films of GNSs, which can be used for gas sensing applications. Here, we demonstrate the use of this deposition method to produce functional gas sensors, using a chemiresistor structure from GNS solution-based techniques. The GNS suspension was prepared by liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) and transferred to a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The effect of non-covalent functionalization with Co-porphyrin and Fe-phthalocyanines on the sensor properties was studied. The pristine and functionalized GNS films were characterized using different techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electrical characterizations. The morphological and spectroscopic analyses both confirm that the molecules (Co-porphyrin and Fe-phthalocyanine) were successfully adsorbed onto the GNSs surface through π-π interactions. The chemiresistive sensor response of functionalized GNSs toward the low concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) (0.5-2 ppm) was studied and compared with those of the film of pristine GNSs. The tests on the sensing performance clearly showed sensitivity to a low concentration of NO₂ (5 ppm). Furthermore, the chemical modification of GNSs significantly improves NO₂ sensing performance compared to the pristine GNSs. The sensor response can be modulated by the type of adsorbed molecules. Indeed, Co-Por exhibited negative responsiveness (the response of Co-Por-GNS sensors and pristine GNS devices was 13.1% and 15.6%, respectively, after exposure to 0.5 ppm of NO₂). Meanwhile, Fe-Phc-GNSs induced the opposite behavior resulting in an increase in the sensor response (the sensitivity was 8.3% and 7.8% of Fe-Phc-GNSs and pristine GNSs, respectively, at 0.5 ppm NO₂ gas).

Chiral template-induced porphyrin-based self-assembled materials for electrochemical chiral sensing

Chirality plays a key role in many fields of natural sciences as well as life sciences. Chiral materials are widely developed and used for electrochemical chiral recognition. In recent years, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been widely used as a novel carbon nanomaterial due to their excellent charge transfer properties, good biocompatibility, and low cost. The special structure of π-conjugated porphyrin attracts attention. Supramolecular self-assembly shows a way to construct chiral materials by self-assembling simple molecules into chiral composites. Herein, we demonstrate the self-assembly of achiral porphyrins induced by chiral carbon quantum dots assembled from L- and or D-tryptophan (L- and or D-Trp) with carbon quantum dots, resulting in 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-carboxyPheyl) (TCPP) self-assembled structure. The electrochemical chiral recognition of chiral self-assembled materials was studied using Phenylalanine (Phe) enantiomer as a chiral analyte. Electrochemical chiral recognition results showed that the chiral self-assembled materials induced by chiral templates have a good ability to discriminate Phe enantiomers. Therefore, this research provides a new idea for the synthesis of chiral composites and further expands applications to electrochemical chiral recognition.

4-Amino-5-benzoyl-1-benzyl-2-(4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-indol-2-yl)-1H-pyrrole-3-carbonitrile

The title compound, 4-amino-5-benzoyl-1-benzyl-2-(4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-indol-2-yl)- 1H-pyrrole-3-carbonitrile, was synthesized for the first time in a 40% yield by the reaction of N-benzyl-3-imino-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-3H-pyrrolo[1,2-a]indol-1-amine and 1-chloroacetophenone in a K2CO3/MeCN system (reflux, 6 h). The product was characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis.

Polyoxa- and Polyazamacrocycles Incorporating 6,7-Diaminoquinoxaline Moiety: Synthesis and Application as Tunable Optical pH-Indicators in Aqueous Solution

Synthetic approach to fluorescent polyaza- and polyoxadiazamacrocycles comprising a structural fragment of 6,7-diamino-2,3-diphenylquinoxaline has been elaborated using Pd-catalyzed amination providing target compounds in yields up to 77%. A series of nine novel N- and N,O-containing macrocyclic ligands differing by the number of donor sites and cavity size has been obtained. These compounds possess well-pronounced fluorescent properties with emission maxima in a blue region in aprotic solvents and high quantum yields of fluorescence, while in proton media, fluorescence shifts towards the green region of the spectrum. Using macrocycles 5c and 5e as examples, we have shown that such compounds can serve as dual-channel (colorimetric and fluorimetric) pH indicators in water media, with pH transition point and response being dependent on the macrocycle structure due to different sequences of protonation steps.

Highly Effective Generation of Singlet Oxygen by an Imidazole-Linked Robust Photosensitizing Covalent Organic Framework

Developing effective photosensitizers to initiate the generation of singlet oxygen (¹O₂) is of great significance in both chemistry and physiology. Herein, linking the photoactive porphyrin moieties by in situ-formed robust imidazole groups, a covalent organic framework (COF), PyPor-COF, was successfully designed and synthesized. Detailed characterizations reveal that it not only possesses high crystallinity, permanent porosity, and robust stability but also shows a semiconductive photoresponse activity. As demonstrated by electron paramagnetic resonance experiments, the COF can initiate the generation of ¹O₂ efficiently under visible-light irradiation, the efficiency of which is higher than that of the pristine porphyrin-based reactant and even higher than some commonly used commercially available photosensitizing agents. Anticancer experiments prove that it can efficiently trigger the production of ¹O₂ in a physiological environment. This work demonstrates that the imidazole-linked porphyrin-incorporated COF is a highly promising photosensitizer that can even be applied in photodynamic therapy.

A Review of The Application of Spectroscopy to Flavonoids from Medicine and Food Homology Materials

Medicinal and food homology materials are a group of drugs in herbal medicine that have nutritional value and can be used as functional food, with great potential for development and application. Flavonoids are one of the major groups of components in pharmaceutical and food materials that have been found to possess a variety of biological activities and pharmacological effects. More and more analytical techniques are being used in the study of flavonoid components of medicinal and food homology materials. Compared to traditional analytical methods, spectroscopic analysis has the advantages of being rapid, economical and free of chemical waste. It is therefore widely used for the identification and analysis of herbal components. This paper reviews the application of spectroscopic techniques in the study of flavonoid components in medicinal and food homology materials, including structure determination, content determination, quality identification, interaction studies, and the corresponding chemometrics. This review may provide some reference and assistance for future studies on the flavonoid composition of other medicinal and food homology materials.

First Example of a Heptazine-Porphyrin Dyad; Synthesis and Spectroscopic Properties

We have prepared the first example of a porphyrin linked to an heptazine photoactive antenna. The two entities, linked with an alkyl spacer, demonstrate the activity of both active moieties. While they behave electrochemically independantly, on the other hand the spectroscopy shows the existence of energy transfer between both partners.

Multicomponent Molecular Systems Based on Porphyrins, 1,3,5-Triazine and Carboranes: Synthesis and Characterization

2,4,6-Trichloro-1,3,5-triazine (cyanuric chloride) is an excellent coupling reagent for the preparation of highly structured multifunctional molecules. Three component systems based on porphyrin, cyanuric chloride and carborane clusters were prepared by a one-pot stepwise amination of cyanuric chloride with 5-(4-aminophenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin, followed by replacement of the remaining chlorine atoms with carborane S- or N-nucleophiles. Some variants of 1,3,5-triazine derivatives containing porphyrin, carborane and residues of biologically active compounds such as maleimide, glycine methyl ester as well as thioglycolic acid, mercaptoethanol and hexafluoroisopropanol were also prepared. A careful control of the reaction temperature during the substitution reactions will allow the synthesis of desired compounds in a good to high yields. The structures of synthesized compounds were determined with UV-vis, IR, 1H NMR, 11B NMR, MALDI-TOF or LC-MS spectroscopic data. The dark and photocytotoxicity as well as intracellular localization and photoinduced cell death for compounds 8, 9, 17, 18 and 24 were evaluated.

Relay detection of Cu2+ and bovine serum albumin by a dansyl derivative-based fluorescent probe

A dansyl derivative-based fluorescent probe, namely, DGly, was developed for relay detection of Cu²⁺ and bovine serum albumin (BSA) with high selectivity and sensitivity. The fluorescence intensity of DGly at 540 nm displayed "on-off-on" phenomenonafter Cu²⁺ and BSA were added in sequence. Correspondingly, the solution color changed from yellow to dark and then to yellowish white under 365 nm UV light irradiation; thus, the solution could be detected by the naked eye. The association constant of DGly-Cu²⁺ was stronger than that of DGly-BSA and DGly-Cu²⁺-BSA. Hence, BSA was detected after a complex was formed between DGly and Cu²⁺. The relay detection of Cu²⁺ and BSA was not influenced by other competitive interferents, and the detection limits of Cu²⁺ and BSA were 1.32 and 0.26 μM, respectively. Analysis of Cu²⁺ in real water samples validated the detection performance of the method proposed herein; it achieved satisfactory recovery and relative standard deviation values. This work demonstrated that introducing metal ions can be an effective way to improve the sensitivity of BSA detection.
