Two-Dimensional Metal Nanomaterials: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications

Diagnosis and therapy of Alzheimer's disease: Light-driven heterogeneous redox processes

Light-driven heterogeneous processes are promising approaches for diagnosing and treating Alzheimer's disease (AD) by regulating its relevant biomolecules. The molecular understanding of the heterogeneous interface environment and its interaction with target biomolecules is important. This review critically appraises the advances in AD early diagnosis and therapy employing heterogeneous light-driven redox processes, encompassing photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensing, photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, PEC therapy, and photoacoustic therapy. The design strategies for heterogeneous interfaces based on target biomolecules and applications are also compiled. Finally, the remaining challenges and future perspectives are discussed. The present review may promote the fundamental understanding of AD diagnosis and therapy and facilitate interdisciplinary studies at the junction of nanotechnology and bioscience.

Fabrication of a two-dimensional bi-lanthanide metal-organic framework as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on energy competition

Bimetallic lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (bi-Ln-MOFs) exhibit great appeal for ratiometric luminescent sensors due to their unique advantages. Specially, the low-lying energy of the empty 4f band of Ce4+ ions benefits Ce-MOFs with robust and broad fluorescent emission. Therefore, constructing ratiometric sensors based on Ce-MOFs is of significance but remains a challenge. Here, a two-dimensional (2D) bi-Ln-MOF is fabricated using Eu3+/Ce4+ and 5-boronoisophthalic acid (5-bop) via a crystal phase transformation strategy to construct a ratiometric luminescent Hg2+ sensor. Due to the lower energy gap of Ce4+ compared to Eu3+ and the corresponding stronger energy-absorption ability, the Ce4+ in bi-Ln-MOF shows a stronger and broader fluorescent emission than that of Eu3+. The substitution of the boric acid group in the bi-Ln-MOF by Hg2+ amplifies the difference between the two lanthanide ions. Therefore, the fluorescence intensity of Ce4+ increases whereas that of Eu3+ decreases accordingly, a behavior distinct from individual Eu-MOF or Ce-MOF performance. This novel bi-Ln-MOF sensor not only achieves a wide linear response range from 0.5 to 120 μM with a low detection limit of 167 nM for Hg2+, but also demonstrates exceptional selectivity and stability. The intriguing sensing mechanism of energy competition and the novel synthesis approach for 2D bi-Ln-MOF are anticipated to broaden the application possibilities of bi-Ln-MOFs for designing ratiometric sensors.

Engineering a two-dimensional metal-carbon nanozyme-based portable paper-based colorimetric chip for onsite and visual analysis of pyrophosphate

Sensitive and accurate analysis of pyrophosphate (PPi) is of great importance for preventing health hazard in environment. Nevertheless, most of sensors focus on sensitivity and selectivity, but practicality is also a significant quota. How to reconciling sensitivity, selectivity and practicability in one single sensor is desirable but remains challenging. Here, we created a novel metal-carbon nanozyme V2O5@C with two-dimensional (2D) morphology and high yet exclusive peroxidase (POD)-like activity via a glucose and NH4NO4-co-directed avenue, and further showed its application in constructing a portable and disposable paper-based analytical chip (PA-chip) for rapid, visual and onsite analysis of PPi. PPi etched V2O5 to prevent the decomposition of H2O2 into ·OH, resulting in weakened POD-like activity. In comparison with PPi deficiency, colorless TMB couldn't be oxidized into oxidized TMB with a dropped absorption at 652 nm. Therefore, obviously shallowed blue color on PA-chip surface was recorded, and demonstrated a negative relationship with PPi dosage, enabling rapid and visual detection of PPi with a limit of detection of 2.6 nM. This study demonstrated the burgeoning applications of nanozymes with POD-like activity in construction of PA-chips for PPi and will quicken the advancement of practical sensors, guaranteeing environmental safety.

Enhancing CRISPR/Cas-mediated electrochemical detection of nucleic acid using nanoparticle-labeled covalent organic frameworks reporters

Molecular detection of nucleic acid plays an important role in early diagnosis and therapy of disease. Herein, a novel and enhanced electrochemical biosensor was exploited based on target-activated CRISPR/Cas12a system coupling with nanoparticle-labeled covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as signal reporters. Hollow spherical COFs (HCOFs) not only served as the nanocarriers of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)-DNA conjugates for enhanced signal output but also acted as three-dimensional tracks of CRISPR/Cas12a system to improve the cleavage accessibility and efficiency. The presence of target DNA triggered the trans-cleavage activity of the CRISPR/Cas12a system, which rapidly cleaved the AgNPs-DNA conjugates on HCOFs, resulting in a remarkable decrease of the electrochemical signal. As a proof of concept, the fabricated biosensing platform realized highly sensitive and selective detection of human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) DNA ranging from 100 fM to 1 nM with the detection limit of 57.2 fM. Furthermore, the proposed strategy provided a versatile and high-performance biosensor for the detection of different targets by simple modification of the crRNA protospacer, holding promising applications in disease diagnosis.

Escaping the ESKAPE pathogens: A review on antibiofilm potential of nanoparticles

ESKAPE pathogens, a notorious consortium comprising Enterococcusfaecium, Staphylococcusaureus, Klebsiellapneumoniae, Acinetobacterbaumannii, Pseudomonasaeruginosa, and Enterobacter species, pose formidable challenges in healthcare settings due to their multidrug-resistant nature. The increasing global cases of antimicrobial-resistant ESKAPE pathogens are closely related to their remarkable ability to form biofilms. Thus, understanding the unique mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance of ESKAPE pathogens and the innate resilience of biofilms against traditional antimicrobial agents is important for developing innovative strategies to establish effective control methods against them. This review offers a thorough analysis of biofilm dynamics, with a focus on the general mechanisms of biofilm formation, the significant contribution of persister cells in the resistance mechanisms, and the recurrence of biofilms in comparison to planktonic cells. Additionally, this review highlights the potential strategies of nanoparticles for managing biofilms in the ESKAPE group of pathogens. Nanoparticles, with their unique physicochemical properties, provide promising opportunities for disrupting biofilm structures and improving antimicrobial effectiveness. The review has explored interactions between nanoparticles and biofilms, covering a range of nanoparticle types such as metal, metal-oxide, surface-modified, and functionalized nanoparticles, along with organic nanoparticles and nanomaterials. The additional focus of this review also encompasses green synthesis techniques of nanoparticles that involve plant extract and supernatants from bacterial and fungal cultures as reducing agents. Furthermore, the use of nanocomposites and nano emulsions in biofilm management of ESKAPE is also discussed. To conclude, the review addresses the current obstacles and future outlooks in nanoparticle-based biofilm management, stressing the necessity for further research and development to fully exploit the potential of nanoparticles in addressing biofilm-related challenges.

Emerging chiral two-dimensional materials

Research into 2D materials has been growing with impressive speed since the discovery of graphene. Such layered materials with ultrathin morphologies and extreme aspect ratios currently display a vast range of properties; however, until recently a conspicuously missing property of 2D materials was global chirality. The situation has changed over the past few years with the implementation of several distinct types of ultrathin chiral 2D crystals. Here we offer a forward-looking perspective on this field to comprehend the fundamentals of global chirality in two dimensions and develop new directions. We specifically discuss the experimental achievements of the emerging chiral 2D materials with a focus on their design strategy, synthesis, structural characterization, fundamental physical properties and possible applications. We will highlight how the molecular-scale local chirality could be significantly transmitted and amplified throughout ultrathin single-crystalline 2D structures, resulting in distinctive global chirality that brings more sophisticated functions.

Bio(sensors) based on molecularly imprinted polymers and silica materials used for food safety and biomedical analysis: Recent trends and future prospects

In recent decades, analytical techniques have increasingly focused on the precise quantification. Achieving this goal has been accomplished with conventional analytical approaches that typically require extensive pretreatment methods, significant reagent usage, and expensive instruments. The need for rapid, simple, and highly selective identification platforms has become increasingly pronounced. Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) has emerged as a promising avenue for developing advanced sensors that can potentially surpass the limitations of conventional detection methods. In recent years, the application of MIP-silica materials-based sensors has garnered significant attention owing to their distinctive characteristics. These types of probes hold a distinct advantage in their remarkable stability and durability, all of which provide a suitable sensing platform in severe environments. Moreover, the substrate composed of silica materials offers a vast surface area for binding, thereby facilitating the efficient detection of even minuscule concentrations of targets. As a result, sensors based on MIP-silica materials have the potential to be widely applied in various industries, including medical diagnosis, and food safety. In the present review, we have conducted an in-depth analysis of the latest research developments in the field of MIPs-silica materials based sensors, with a focus on succinctly summarizing and elucidating the most crucial findings. This is the first comprehensive review of integration MIPs with silica materials in electrochemical (EC) and optical probes for biomedical analysis and food safety.

The Growth and Shape Evolution of Indium Nanoplates Studied by In Situ Liquid Cell TEM

Understanding the growth mechanisms of nanomaterials is crucial for effectively controlling their morphology which may affect their properties. Here, the growth process of indium nanoplates is studied using in situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy. Quantitative analysis shows that the growth of indium nanoplate is limited by surface reaction. Besides, the growth process has two stages, which is different from that of other metal nanoplates reported previously. At the first stage, indium particles transform gradually from face-centered cubic to body-centered tetragonal (bct) structure as the seeds grow. At the second stage, the seeds grow faster than at the first stage and form indium triangular nanoplates. Indium triangular nanoplates have a bct structure with {011}-twin, which is found to form through kinetic reactions. In addition, the shape evolution of truncated triangle nanoplate with multiple twin planes is studied. The growth rate of truncated edge changes with the varied number of re-entrant grooves. The present work provides valuable insights into the growth mechanism of metal nanoplates with low-symmetric structure and the role of twin planes in the shape evolution of plate-like metal nanomaterials.

Ultra-Large Two-Dimensional Metal Nanowire Networks by Microfluidic Laminar Flow Synthesis for Formic Acid Electrooxidation

Despite the great research interest in two-dimensional metal nanowire networks (2D MNWNs) due to their large specific surface area and abundance of unsaturated coordination atoms, their controllable synthesis still remains a significant challenge. Herein, a microfluidics laminar flow-based approach is developed, enabling the facile preparation of large-scale 2D structures with diverse alloy compositions, such as PtBi, AuBi, PdBi, PtPdBi, and PtAuCu alloys. Remarkably, these 2D MNWNs can reach sizes up to submillimeter scale (~220 μm), which is significantly larger than the evolution from the 1D or 3D counterparts that typically measure only tens of nanometers. The PdBi 2D MNWNs affords the highest specific activity for formic acid (2669.1 mA mg-1) among current unsupported catalysts, which is 103.5 times higher than Pt-black, respectively. Furthermore, in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) experiments provide comprehensive evidence that PdBi 2D MNWNs catalysts can effectively prevent CO* poisoning, resulting in exceptional activity and stability for the oxidation of formic acid.

Freestanding Penta-Twinned Palladium Nanosheets

Control over the morphology of nanomaterials to have a 2D structure and manipulating the surface strain of nanostructures through defect control have proved to be promising for developing efficient catalysts for sustainable chemical and energy conversion. Here a one-pot aqueous synthesis route of freestanding Pd nanosheets with a penta-twinned structure (PdPT NSs) is presented. The generation of the penta-twinned nanosheet structure can be succeeded by directing the anisotropic growth of Pd under the controlled reduction kinetics of Pd precursors. Experimental and computational investigations showed that the surface atoms of the PdPT NSs are effectively under a compressive environment due to the strain imposed by their twin boundary defects. Due to the twin boundary-induced surface strain as well as the 2D structure of the PdPT NSs, they exhibited highly enhanced electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction compared to Pd nanosheets without a twin boundary, 3D Pd nanocrystals, and commercial Pd/C and Pt/C catalysts.

The Rise of Xene Hybrids

Xenes, mono-elemental atomic sheets, exhibit Dirac/Dirac-like quantum behavior. When interfaced with other 2D materials such as boron nitride, transition metal dichalcogenides, and metal carbides/nitrides/carbonitrides, it enables them with unique physicochemical properties, including structural stability, desirable bandgap, efficient charge carrier injection, flexibility/breaking stress, thermal conductivity, chemical reactivity, catalytic efficiency, molecular adsorption, and wettability. For example, BN acts as an anti-oxidative shield, MoS2 injects electrons upon laser excitation, and MXene provides mechanical flexibility. Beyond precise compositional modulations, stacking sequences, and inter-layer coupling controlled by parameters, achieving scalability and reproducibility in hybridization is crucial for implementing these quantum materials in consumer applications. However, realizing the full potential of these hybrid materials faces challenges such as air gaps, uneven interfaces, and the formation of defects and functional groups. Advanced synthesis techniques, a deep understanding of quantum behaviors, precise control over interfacial interactions, and awareness of cross-correlations among these factors are essential. Xene-based hybrids show immense promise for groundbreaking applications in quantum computing, flexible electronics, energy storage, and catalysis. In this timely perspective, recent discoveries of novel Xenes and their hybrids are highlighted, emphasizing correlations among synthetic parameters, structure, properties, and applications. It is anticipated that these insights will revolutionize diverse industries and technologies.

Lattice-Strain Engineering in Ni-Ru Heterostructures for Efficient Acetylene Hydrochlorination toward Vinyl Chloride

Ru-based catalysts have emerged as promising alternatives to HgCl2 in vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) production by acetylene hydrochlorination. However, poor C2H2 activation and the generation of key intermediates (*CH2═CH) have posed grand challenges for enhanced catalytic performances. Herein, we synthesized a Ni-intercalated Ru heterostructure using a lattice-strain engineering strategy, resulting in the desired electronic and chemical environments. The collaboration of Ni splits the adsorption centers of C2H2 and HCl by weakening the strong steric hindrance, and it also promotes the activation of the linear C≡C configurations. The well-controlled lattice strain enables strong d-d hybridization interactions between Ni and Ru, resulting in an upshift of the d-band center from -3.72 eV (for Ru/C) to -3.49 eV and electronic delocalization. This optimized local Ni-Ru/C structure thus enhances *H adsorption while weakening the energy barrier for generating *CH2═CH intermediates. Furthermore, the energy barrier for VCM formation was simultaneously reduced. Accordingly, the Ni-Ru/C heterostructures achieve improved performance in pilot-scale trials, with a conversion of >99.2% and stability for over 500 h. These performances significantly surpass most reported Ru-based moieties and the traditional Hg catalysts, offering a promising avenue for C2H2 activation in industrial applications.

Colloidal synthesis of two-dimensional nanocrystals by the polyol route

The field of 2D nanomaterials is ever-growing with a myriad of synthetic advancements that have been used to obtain such materials. There are top-down, as well as bottom-up, fabrication methods for obtaining 2D nanomaterials; however, synthesis of 2D nanomaterials from solution offers a simple scalable way to control size, shape, and surface. This review outlines the recent advances in colloidal polyol synthesis of 2D nanomaterials and provides perspectives on the similarities and differences in various syntheses. Various materials classes are presented and discussed, including metals, oxides, chalcogenides, and halides, that can be synthesized as 2D nanomaterials via a polyol process. Throughout the literature, polyol media is demonstrated to be versatile not only as a solvent and reducing agent for metal precursors but also as a binding and shape-directing agent for many 2D nanomaterials. Polyols also offer the ability to dissolve various surfactants and additives that can further control the morphology and composition of various nanomaterials. In this review, we outline the various 2D materials that have been realized via the solution polyol route.

Tailor-Made Gold Nanomaterials for Applications in Soft Bioelectronics and Optoelectronics

In modern nanoscience and nanotechnology, gold nanomaterials are indispensable building blocks that have demonstrated a plethora of applications in catalysis, biology, bioelectronics, and optoelectronics. Gold nanomaterials possess many appealing material properties, such as facile control over their size/shape and surface functionality, intrinsic chemical inertness yet with high biocompatibility, adjustable localized surface plasmon resonances, tunable conductivity, wide electrochemical window, etc. Such material attributes have been recently utilized for designing and fabricating soft bioelectronics and optoelectronics. This motivates to give a comprehensive overview of this burgeoning field. The discussion of representative tailor-made gold nanomaterials, including gold nanocrystals, ultrathin gold nanowires, vertically aligned gold nanowires, hard template-assisted gold nanowires/gold nanotubes, bimetallic/trimetallic gold nanowires, gold nanomeshes, and gold nanosheets, is begun. This is followed by the description of various fabrication methodologies for state-of-the-art applications such as strain sensors, pressure sensors, electrochemical sensors, electrophysiological devices, energy-storage devices, energy-harvesting devices, optoelectronics, and others. Finally, the remaining challenges and opportunities are discussed.

Recent advances of doping strategy for boosting the electrocatalytic performance of two-dimensional noble metal nanosheets

Benefiting from the ultrahigh specific surface areas, massive exposed surface atoms, and highly tunable microstructures, the two-dimensional (2D) noble metal nanosheets (NSs) have presented promising performance for various electrocatalytic reactions. Nevertheless, the heteroatom doping strategy, and in particular, the electronic structure tuning mechanisms of the 2D noble metal catalysts (NMCs) yet remain ambiguous. Herein, we first review several effective strategies for modulating the electrocatalytic performance of 2D NMCs. Then, the electronic tuning effect of hetero-dopants for boosting the electrocatalytic properties of 2D NMCs is systematically discussed. Finally, we put forward current challenges in the field of 2D NMCs, and propose possible solutions, particularly from the perspective of the evolution of electron microscopy. This review attempts to establish an intrinsic correlation between the electronic structures and the catalytic properties, so as to provide a guideline for designing high-performance electrocatalysts.

Ultrathin Flexible Silica Nanosheets with Surface Chemistry-Modulated Affinity to Mammalian Cells

Flexibility of nanomaterials is challenging but worthy to tune for biomedical applications. Biocompatible silica nanomaterials are under extensive exploration but are rarely observed to exhibit flexibility despite the polymeric nature. Herein, a facile one-step route is reported to ultrathin flexible silica nanosheets (NSs), whose low thickness and high diameter-to-thickness ratio enables folding. Thickness and diameter can be readily tuned to enable controlled flexibility. Mechanism study reveals that beyond the commonly used surfactant, the "uncommon" one bearing two hydrophobic tails play a guiding role in producing sheeted/layered/shelled structures, while addition of ethanol appropriately relieved the strong interfacial tension of the assembled surfactants, which will otherwise produce large curled sheeted structures. With these ultrathin NSs, it is further shown that the cellular preference for particle shape and rigidity is highly dependent on surface chemistry of nanoparticles: under high particle-cell affinity, NSs, and especially the flexible ones will be preferred by mammalian cells for internalization or attachment, while this preference is basically invalid when the affinity is low. Therefore, properties of the ultrathin silica NSs can be effectively expanded and empowered by surface chemistry to realize improved bio-sensing or drug delivery.

Atomically thin iridium nanosheets for oxygen evolution electrocatalysis

2D nanostructures of noble metals hold great potential for developing efficient electrocatalysts due to their high atom efficiency associated with their large specific surface area and abundant active sites. Here, we introduce a one-pot solvothermal synthesis method that can enable the fabrication of freestanding atomically thin Ir nanosheets. The thermal decomposition of a complex of Ir and a long-chain amine, which could readily be formed with the assistance of a strong base, under CO flow conditions successfully yielded Ir nanosheets consisting of 2-4 atomic layers. The prepared Ir nanosheets showed prominent activity and stability toward oxygen evolution electrocatalysis in acidic conditions, which can be attributed to their ultrathin 2D structure.

Controllable synthesis of high-entropy alloys

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) involving more than four elements, as emerging alloys, have brought about a paradigm shift in material design. The unprecedented compositional diversities and structural complexities of HEAs endow multidimensional exploration space and great potential for practical benefits, as well as a formidable challenge for synthesis. To further optimize performance and promote advanced applications, it is essential to synthesize HEAs with desired characteristics to satisfy the requirements in the application scenarios. The properties of HEAs are highly related to their chemical compositions, microstructure, and morphology. In this review, a comprehensive overview of the controllable synthesis of HEAs is provided, ranging from composition design to morphology control, structure construction, and surface/interface engineering. The fundamental parameters and advanced characterization related to HEAs are introduced. We also propose several critical directions for future development. This review can provide insight and an in-depth understanding of HEAs, accelerating the synthesis of the desired HEAs.

Mass Spectrometry Imaging Reveals the Morphology-Dependent Toxicological Effects of Nanosilvers on Multiple Organs of Adult Zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Nanosilvers with multifarious morphologies have been extensively used in many fields, but their morphology-dependent toxicity toward nontarget aquatic organisms remains largely unclear. Herein, we used matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) to investigate the toxicological effects of silver nanomaterials with various morphologies on spatially resolved lipid profiles within multiple organs in adult zebrafish, especially for the gill, liver, and intestine. Integrated with histopathology, enzyme activity, accumulated Ag contents and amounts, as well as MSI results, we found that nanosilvers exhibit morphology-dependent nanotoxicity by disrupting lipid levels and producing oxidative stress. Silver nanospheres (AgNSs) had the highest toxicity toward adult zebrafish, whereas silver nanoflakes (AgNFs) exhibited greater toxicity than silver nanowires (AgNWs). Levels of differential phospholipids, such as PC, PE, PI, and PS, were associated with nanosilver morphology. Notably, we found that AgNSs induced greater toxicity in multiple organs, such as the brain, gill, and liver, while AgNWs and AgNFs caused greater toxicity in the intestine than AgNSs. Lipid functional disturbance and oxidative stress further caused inflammation and membrane damage after exposure to nanosilvers, especially with respect to sphere morphology. Taken together, these findings will contribute to clarifying the toxicological effects and mechanisms of different morphologies of nanosilvers in adult zebrafish.

Nano-Micron Combined Hydrogel Microspheres: Novel Answer for Minimal Invasive Biomedical Applications

Hydrogels, key in biomedical research for their hydrophilicity and versatility, have evolved with hydrogel microspheres (HMs) of micron-scale dimensions, enhancing their role in minimally invasive therapeutic delivery, tissue repair, and regeneration. The recent emergence of nanomaterials has ushered in a revolutionary transformation in the biomedical field, which demonstrates tremendous potential in targeted therapies, biological imaging, and disease diagnostics. Consequently, the integration of advanced nanotechnology promises to trigger a new revolution in the realm of hydrogels. HMs loaded with nanomaterials combine the advantages of both hydrogels and nanomaterials, which enables multifaceted functionalities such as efficient drug delivery, sustained release, targeted therapy, biological lubrication, biochemical detection, medical imaging, biosensing monitoring, and micro-robotics. Here, this review comprehensively expounds upon commonly used nanomaterials and their classifications. Then, it provides comprehensive insights into the raw materials and preparation methods of HMs. Besides, the common strategies employed to achieve nano-micron combinations are summarized, and the latest applications of these advanced nano-micron combined HMs in the biomedical field are elucidated. Finally, valuable insights into the future design and development of nano-micron combined HMs are provided.

Engineering of Ultra-Thin Layer of MIL-125(Ti) Nanosheet\Zn-Tetracarboxy-Phthalocyanine S-Scheme Heterojunction as Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction Catalyst

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with ultrathin 2D structure have attracted remarkable attention in photocatalytic application owing to the accessibility of abundant active sites on the surface. But high charge recombination results in poor photocatalytic activity. Herein, the synthesis of ultrathin MIL-125(Ti) nanosheets is reported with a thickness of 1.3 nm through a simple chemical reaction route of precursor solution aging and subsequent solvothermal process for photocatalytic CO2 production. The maximal CO evolution rate achieves 200.8 µmol g-1 h-1, which is prominently higher than that (78.6 µmol g-1 h-1) of the bulk MIL-125(Ti) counterpart. Furthermore, the structurally stable Zn (II) tetracarboxy phthalocyanine (ZnTcPc) molecules assembly on ultrathin MIL-125(Ti) nanosheet (NS) to form MIL-125(Ti) NS\ZnTcPc S-scheme heterojunction through the strong interaction between the Ti3+ in MIL-125(Ti) and the COOH in ZnTcPc. The introduction of ZnTcPc greatly extends light absorption range and increases charge separation rate. The experimental and density functional theory calculation results validate that the MIL-125(Ti) NS\ZnTcPc S-scheme heterojunction can favor CO2 adsorption and effectively depress the formation energy of the intermediates, achieving a high CO evolution rate of 450.8 µmol g-1 h-1. This work provides a strategy of engineering 2D MOF-based heterostructure systems for photocatalytic application.

A microphysiological system for handling graphene related materials under flow conditions

The field of nanotechnology has developed rapidly in recent decades due to its broad applications in many industrial and biomedical fields. Notably, 2D materials such as graphene-related materials (GRMs) have been extensively explored and, as such, their safety needs to be assessed. However, GRMs tend to deposit quickly, present low stability in aqueous solutions, and adsorb to plastic materials. Consequently, traditional approaches based on static assays facilitate their deposition and adsorption and fail to recreate human physiological conditions. Organ-on-a-chip (OOC) technology could, however, solve these drawbacks and lead to the development of microphysiological systems (MPSs) that mimic the microenvironment present in human tissues. In light of the above, in the present study a microfluidic system under flow conditions has been optimised to minimise graphene oxide (GO) and few-layer graphene (FLG) adsorption and deposition. For that purpose, a kidney-on-a-chip was developed and optimised to evaluate the effects of exposure to GO and FLG flakes at a sublethal dose under fluid flow conditions. In summary, MPSs are an innovative and precise tool for evaluating the effects of exposure to GRMs and other type of nanomaterials.

Surface-Enriched Single-Bi-Atoms Tailoring of Pt Nanorings for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells with Ultralow-Pt-Loading

Single-atom decorating of Pt emerges as a highly effective strategy to boost catalytic properties, which can trigger the most Pt active sites while blocking the smallest number of Pt atoms. However, the rational design and creation of high-density single-atoms on Pt surface remain as a huge challenge. Herein, a customized synthesis of surface-enriched single-Bi-atoms tailored Pt nanorings (SE-Bi1/Pt NRs) toward methanol oxidation is reported, which is guided by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggesting that a relatively higher density of Bi species on Pt surface can ensure a CO-free pathway and accelerate the kinetics of *HCOOH formation. Decorating Pt NRs with dense single-Bi-atoms is achieved by starting from PtBi intermetallic nanoplates (NPs) with intrinsically isolated Bi atoms and subsequent etching and annealing treatments. The SE-Bi1/Pt NRs exhibit a mass activity of 23.77 A mg-1 Pt toward methanol oxidation in alkaline electrolyte, which is 2.2 and 12.8 times higher than those of Pt-Bi NRs and Pt/C, respectively. This excellent activity endows the SE-Bi1/Pt NRs with a high likelihood to be used as a practical anodic electrocatalyst for direct methanol fuel cells （DMFCs） with high power density of 85.3 mW cm-2 and ultralow Pt loading of 0.39 mg cm-2.

Toward Clean 2D Materials and Devices: Recent Progress in Transfer and Cleaning Methods

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have tremendous potential to revolutionize the field of electronics and photonics. Unlocking such potential, however, is hampered by the presence of contaminants that usually impede the performance of 2D materials in devices. This perspective provides an overview of recent efforts to develop clean 2D materials and devices. It begins by discussing conventional and recently developed wet and dry transfer techniques and their effectiveness in maintaining material "cleanliness". Multi-scale methodologies for assessing the cleanliness of 2D material surfaces and interfaces are then reviewed. Finally, recent advances in passive and active cleaning strategies are presented, including the unique self-cleaning mechanism, thermal annealing, and mechanical treatment that rely on self-cleaning in essence. The crucial role of interface wetting in these methods is emphasized, and it is hoped that this understanding can inspire further extension and innovation of efficient transfer and cleaning of 2D materials for practical applications.

Self-Organized Gradually Single-Atom-Layer of Metal Osmium for an Unprecedented Hydrogen Production from Seawater

Atomic thick two-dimensional (2D) materials with exciting physical, chemical, and electronic properties are gaining increasing attention in next-generation science and technology, showing great promise in catalysis and energy science. However, the precise design and synthesis of efficient catalytic systems based on such materials still face many difficulties, especially in how to control the preparation of structurally determined, highly active, atomic-scale distribution of material systems. Here, we report that a highly active zerovalent osmium single-atom-layer with a thickness of single atom size has been successfully and controllably self-organized on the surface of 2D graphdiyne (GDY) material. Detailed characterizations showed that the incomplete charge transfer effect between the Os atoms and GDY not only stabilized the catalytic system but also improved the intrinsic activity, making the Gibbs free energy reach the best and resulting in remarkable performance with a small overpotential of 49 mV at 500 mA cm-2, large specific j0 of 18.6 mA cm-2, and turnover frequency of 3.89 H2 s-1 at 50 mV. In addition, the formation of sp-C-Os bonds guarantees the high long-term stability of 800 h at a large current density of 500 mA cm-2 in alkaline simulated seawater.

Air-Stable, Large-Area 2D Metals and Semiconductors

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are popular for fundamental physics study and technological applications in next-generation electronics, spintronics, and optoelectronic devices due to a wide range of intriguing physical and chemical properties. Recently, the family of 2D metals and 2D semiconductors has been expanding rapidly because they offer properties once unknown to us. One of the challenges to fully access their properties is poor stability in ambient conditions. In the first half of this Review, we briefly summarize common methods of preparing 2D metals and highlight some recent approaches for making air-stable 2D metals. Additionally, we introduce the physicochemical properties of some air-stable 2D metals recently explored. The second half discusses the air stability and oxidation mechanisms of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides and some elemental 2D semiconductors. Their air stability can be enhanced by optimizing growth temperature, substrates, and precursors during 2D material growth to improve material quality, which will be discussed. Other methods, including doping, postgrowth annealing, and encapsulation of insulators that can suppress defects and isolate the encapsulated samples from the ambient environment, will be reviewed.

Real-Time Multiscale Imaging of Heterogeneous Multistage Reactions: Insights into Nanoscale TiO2 Synthesis

Hydrothermal methods are widely used to synthesize functional inorganic materials. The interplay between the reactive species, solution chemistry, and the nanoscale product makes it challenging to control the reaction pathway to achieve a uniform product. Here, we resolve the heterogeneity that arises during hydrothermal synthesis across different length scales. We combine spatially resolved in situ X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) and small-angle X-ray scattering analysis, which are sensitive to structure on the atomic and nanoscale, with a novel time-lapse optical imaging strategy that reveals heterogeneity and phase separations across the entire reaction. For TiO2 synthesis via hydrothermal hydrolysis of TiCl4, we identify multiple cycles of TiO2 formation and separation that contribute to nonuniformity in the polymorphic product. The PDF data show that the characteristics of TiO2 formed during each formation-separation cycle differ, contributing to the ongoing challenge of precisely identifying reaction controls. The imaging strategy pioneered here provides an efficient in situ means to systematically compare how the reaction evolves under different chemical conditions, thereby advancing our understanding of functional inorganic material synthesis.

Thin-Film-Assisted Photothermal Deformation of Gold Nanoparticles: A Facile and In-Situ Strategy for Single-Plate-Based Devices

Optical-induced shape transformation of single nanoparticles on substrates has shown benefits of simplicity and regularity for single-particle device fabrication and on-chip integration. However, most of the existing strategies are based on wet chemical growth and etching, which could lead to surface contamination with limited local selectivity and device compatibility. Shape deformation via the photothermal effect can overcome these issues but has limited versatility and tunability largely due to the high surface tension of the molten droplet. Here we show gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) can drastically transform into nanoplates under the irradiation of a continuous wave laser (446 nm). We reveal the dielectric thin film underneath the molten Au is critical in deforming the NP into faceted nanoplate under the drive of photothermophoretic forces, which is sufficient to counteract the surface tension of the molten droplet. Both experimental evidence and simulations support this thin-film-assisted photothermal deformation mechanism, which is local selective and generally applicable to differently shaped Au NPs. It provides a facile and robust strategy for single-plate-based device applications.

Large area single crystal gold of single nanometer thickness for nanophotonics

Two-dimensional single crystal metals, in which the behavior of highly confined optical modes is intertwined with quantum phenomena, are highly sought after for next-generation technologies. Here, we report large area (>104 μm2), single crystal two-dimensional gold flakes (2DGFs) with thicknesses down to a single nanometer level, employing an atomic-level precision chemical etching approach. The decrease of the thickness down to such scales leads to the quantization of the electronic states, endowing 2DGFs with quantum-confinement-augmented optical nonlinearity, particularly leading to more than two orders of magnitude enhancement in harmonic generation compared with their thick polycrystalline counterparts. The nanometer-scale thickness and single crystal quality makes 2DGFs a promising platform for realizing plasmonic nanostructures with nanoscale optical confinement. This is demonstrated by patterning 2DGFs into nanoribbon arrays, exhibiting strongly confined near infrared plasmonic resonances with high quality factors. The developed 2DGFs provide an emerging platform for nanophotonic research and open up opportunities for applications in ultrathin plasmonic, optoelectronic and quantum devices.

Mechanism of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction by borophene supported bimetallic catalysts

Bimetal atom catalysts (BACs) hold significant potential for various applications as a result of the synergistic interaction between adjacent metal atoms. This interaction leads to improved catalytic performance, while simultaneously maintaining high atomic efficiency and exceptional selectivity, similar to single atom catalysts (SACs). Bimetallic site catalysts (M2β12) supported by β12-borophene were developed as catalysts for electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR). The research on density functional theory (DFT) demonstrates that M2β12 exhibits exceptional stability, conductivity, and catalytic activity. Investigating the most efficient reaction pathway for CO2RR by analyzing the Gibbs free energy (ΔG) during potential determining steps (PDS) and choosing a catalyst with outstanding catalytic performance for CO2RR. The overpotential required for Fe2β12 and Ag2β12 to generate CO is merely 0.05 V. This implies that the conversion of CO2 to CO can be accomplished with minimal additional voltage. The overpotential values for Cu2β12 and Ag2β12 during the formation of HCOOH were merely 0.001 and 0.07 V, respectively. Furthermore, the Rh2β12 catalyst exhibits a relatively low overpotential of 0.51 V for CH3OH and 0.65 V for CH4. The Fe2β12 produces C2H4 through the *CO-*CO pathway, while Ag2β12 generates CH3CH2OH via the *CO-*CHO coupling pathway, with remarkably low overpotentials of 0.84 and 0.60 V, respectively. The study provides valuable insights for the systematic design and screening of electrocatalysts for CO2RR that exhibit exceptional catalytic performance and selectivity.

Twinning Engineering of Platinum/Iridium Nanonets as Turing-Type Catalysts for Efficient Water Splitting

The twin boundary, a common lattice plane of mirror-symmetric crystals, may have high reactivity due to special atomic coordination. However, twinning platinum and iridium nanocatalysts are grand challenges due to the high stacking fault energies that are nearly 1 order of magnitude larger than those of easy-twinning gold and silver. Here, we demonstrate that Turing structuring, realized by selective etching of superthin metal film, provides 14.3 and 18.9 times increases in twin-boundary densities for platinum and iridium nanonets, comparable to the highly twinned silver nanocatalysts. The Turing configurations with abundant low-coordination atoms contribute to the formation of nanotwins and create a large active surface area. Theoretical calculations reveal that the specific atom arrangement on the twin boundary changes the electronic structure and reduces the energy barrier of water dissociation. The optimal Turing-type platinum nanonets demonstrated excellent hydrogen-evolution-reaction performance with a 25.6 mV overpotential at 10.0 mA·cm-2 and a 14.8-fold increase in mass activity. And the bifunctional Turing iridium catalysts integrated in the water electrolyzer had a mass activity 23.0 times that of commercial iridium catalysts. This work opens a new avenue for nanocrystal twinning as a facile paradigm for designing high-performance nanocatalysts.

Magnetic two-dimensional nanocomposites for multimodal antitumor therapy: a recent review

Magnetic two-dimensional nanocomposites (M2D NCs) that synergistically combine magnetic nanomedicine and 2D nanomaterials have emerged in multimodal antitumor therapy, attracting great interest in materials science and biomedical engineering. This review provides a summary of the recent advances of M2D NCs and their multimodal antitumor applications. We first introduce the design and fabrication of M2D NCs, followed by discussing new types of M2D NCs that have been recently reported. Then, a detailed analysis and discussions about the different types of M2D NCs are presented based on the structural categories of 2D NMs, including 2D graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), transition metal carbides/nitrides/carbonitrides (MXenes), black phosphorus (BP), layered double hydroxides (LDHs), metal organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and other 2D nanomaterials. In particular, we focus on the synthesis strategies, magnetic or optical responsive performance, and the versatile antitumor applications, which include magnetic hyperthermia therapy (MHT), photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), drug delivery, immunotherapy and multimodal imaging. We conclude the review by proposing future developments with an emphasis on the mass production and biodegradation mechanism of the M2D NCs. This work is expected to provide a comprehensive overview to researchers and engineers who are interested in such a research field and promote the clinical translation of M2D NCs in practical applications.

Two-Dimensional Nickel Porphyrinic Metal-Organic Framework-Modified Electrode for Electrochemical Sensing

Due to their highly exposed active sites and high aspect ratio caused by their substantial lateral dimension and thin thickness, two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets are currently considered a potential hybrid material for electrochemical sensing. Herein, we present a nickel-based porphyrinic MOF nanosheet as a versatile and robust platform with an enhanced electrochemical detection performance. It is important to note that the nickel porphyrin ligand reacted with Cu(NO3)2·3H2O in a solvothermal process, with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) acting as the surfactant to control the anisotropic development of creating a 2D Cu-TCPP(Ni) MOF nanosheet structure. To realize the exceptional selectivity, sensitivity, and stability of the synthesized 2D Cu-TCPP(Ni) MOF nanosheet, a laser-induced graphene electrode was modified with the MOF nanosheet and employed as a sensor for the detection of p-nitrophenol (p-NP). With a detection range of 0.5-200 μM for differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and 0.9-300 μM for cyclic voltammetry (CV), the proposed sensor demonstrated enhanced electrochemical performance, with the limit of detection (LOD) for DPV and CV as 0.1 and 0.3 μM, respectively. The outstanding outcome of the sensor is attributed to the 2D Cu-TCPP(Ni) MOF nanosheet's substantial active surface area, innate catalytic activity, and superior adsorption capacity. Furthermore, it is anticipated that the proposed electrode sensor will make it possible to create high-performance electrochemical sensors for environmental point-of-care testing since it successfully detected p-NP in real sample analysis.

Recent Advances of Emerging Metal-Containing Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials in Tumor Theranostics

In recent years, metal-containing two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, among various 2D nanomaterials have attracted widespread attention because of their unique physical and chemical properties, especially in the fields of biomedical applications. Firstly, the review provides a brief introduction to two types of metal-containing 2D nanomaterials, based on whether metal species take up the major skeleton of the 2D nanomaterials. After this, the synthetical approaches are summarized, focusing on two strategies similar to other 2D nanomaterials, top-down and bottom-up methods. Then, the performance and evaluation of these 2D nanomaterials when applied to cancer therapy are discussed in detail. The specificity of metal-containing 2D nanomaterials in physics and optics makes them capable of killing cancer cells in a variety of ways, such as photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, sonodynamic therapy, chemodynamic therapy and so on. Besides, the integrated platform of diagnosis and treatment and the clinical translatability through metal-containing 2D nanomaterials is also introduced in this review. In the summary and perspective section, advanced rational design, challenges and promising clinical contributions to cancer therapy of these emerging metal-containing 2D nanomaterials are discussed.

Pd8 Nanocluster with Nonmetal-to-Metal- Ring Coordination and Promising Photothermal Conversion Efficiency

Constructing ambient-stable, single-atom-layered metal-based materials with atomic precision and understanding their underlying stability mechanisms are challenging. Here, stable single-atom-layered nanoclusters of Pd were synthesized and precisely characterized through electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. A pseudo-pentalene-like Pd8 unit was found in the nanocluster, interacting with two syn PPh units through nonmetal-to-metal -ring coordination. The unexpected coordination, which is distinctly different from the typical organoring-to-metal coordination in half-sandwich-type organometallic compounds, contributes to the ambient stability of the as-obtained single-atom-layered nanocluster as revealed through theoretical and experimental analyses. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations revealed dominant electron transition along the horizontal x-direction of the Pd8 plane, indicating high photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) of the nanocluster, which was verified by the experimental PCE of 73.3 %. Therefore, this study unveils the birth of a novel type of compound and the finding of the unusual nonmetal-to-metal -ring coordination and has important implications for future syntheses, structures, properties, and structure-property correlations of single-atom-layered metal-based materials.

Customized Synthesis of MOF Nanoplates via Molecular Scalpel Strategy for Efficient Oxygen Reduction in Zn-Air Batteries

The production of metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoplates with well-defined geometric morphology is remarkable for expanding their applications. Herein, the cobalt-based MOF nanoplates with hexagonal channels from a layer-pillared MOF are accomplished, via a molecular scalpel strategy, utilizing monodentate pyridine to replace the bidentate 4,4'-bipyridine. The morphology can be modified from nanorods to nanoplates with controllable thickness tuned by the amounts of pyridine. Succeeding carbonization treatment transforms the MOF nanoplates into Co particles homogeneously encapsulated in the nitrogen-doped carbon layers. The prepared catalyst with a unique platelike morphology displays a high half-wave potential of 0.88 V in oxygen reduction reaction. When used in primary Zn-air batteries, it delivers a high peak power density of 280 mW cm-2 . This work clarifies the structure-morphology-reactivity connection of MOF nanoplates.

Oxidation-induced superelasticity in metallic glass nanotubes

Although metallic nanostructures have been attracting tremendous research interest in nanoscience and nanotechnologies, it is known that environmental attacks, such as surface oxidation, can easily initiate cracking on the surface of metals, thus deteriorating their overall functional/structural properties1-3. In sharp contrast, here we report that severely oxidized metallic glass nanotubes can attain an ultrahigh recoverable elastic strain of up to ~14% at room temperature, which outperform bulk metallic glasses, metallic glass nanowires and many other superelastic metals hitherto reported. Through in situ experiments and atomistic simulations, we reveal that the physical mechanisms underpinning the observed superelasticity can be attributed to the formation of a percolating oxide network in metallic glass nanotubes, which not only restricts atomic-scale plastic events during loading but also leads to the recovery of elastic rigidity on unloading. Our discovery implies that oxidation in low-dimensional metallic glasses can result in unique properties for applications in nanodevices.

Piezoelectricity, Pyroelectricity, and Ferroelectricity in Biomaterials and Biomedical Applications

Piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and ferroelectric materials are considered unique biomedical materials due to their dielectric crystals and asymmetric centers that allow them to directly convert various primary forms of energy in the environment, such as sunlight, mechanical energy, and thermal energy, into secondary energy, such as electricity and chemical energy. These materials possess exceptional energy conversion ability and excellent catalytic properties, which have led to their widespread usage within biomedical fields. Numerous biomedical applications have demonstrated great potential with these materials, including disease treatment, biosensors, and tissue engineering. For example, piezoelectric materials are used to stimulate cell growth in bone regeneration, while pyroelectric materials are applied in skin cancer detection and imaging. Ferroelectric materials have even found use in neural implants that record and stimulate electrical activity in the brain. This paper reviews the relationship between ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and pyroelectric effects and the fundamental principles of different catalytic reactions. It also highlights the preparation methods of these three materials and the significant progress made in their biomedical applications. The review concludes by presenting key challenges and future prospects for efficient catalysts based on piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and ferroelectric nanomaterials for biomedical applications.

Continuous Phase Regulation of a Pd-Te Hexagonal Nanoplate Library

Phase regulation of noble metal-based nanomaterials provides a promising strategy for boosting the catalytic performance. However, realizing the continuous phase modulation in two-dimensional structures and unveiling the relevant structure-performance relationship remain significant challenges. In this work, we present the first example of continuous phase modulation in a library of Pd-Te hexagonal nanoplates (HNPs) from cubic-phase Pd4Te, rhombohedral-phase Pd20Te7, rhombohedral-phase Pd8Te3, and hexagonal-phase PdTe to hexagonal-phase PdTe2. Notably, the continuous phase regulation of the well-defined Pd-Te HNPs enables the successful modulation of the distance between adjacent Pd active sites, triggering an exciting way for tuning the relevant catalytic reactions intrinsically. The proof-of-concept oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) experiment shows a Pd-Pd distance-dependent ORR performance, where the hexagonal-phase PdTe HNPs present the best electrochemical performance in ORR (mass activity and specific activity of 1.02 A mg-1Pd and 1.83 mA cm-2Pd at 0.9 V vs RHE). Theoretical investigation reveals that the increased Pd-Pd distance relates to the weak *OH adsorption over Pd-Te HNPs, thus contributing to the remarkable ORR activity of PdTe HNPs. This work advances the phase-controlled synthesis of noble metal-based nanostructures, which gives huge impetus to the design of high-efficiency nanomaterials for diverse applications.

DNA Origami-Based Letterpress Printing of Gold Nanostructures with Predesigned Morphologies

Creating customizable metallic nanostructures in a simple and controllable manner has been a long-standing goal in nanoscience. In this study, we use DNA origami as a letterpress printing plate and gold nanoparticles as ink to produce predesigned gold nanostructures. The letterpress plate is reusable, enabling the repetitive production of predesigned gold nanostructures. Furthermore, by modifying the DNA origami letterpress plate on magnetic beads, we can simplify the printing processes. We have successfully printed gold nanoparticle dimers, trimers, straight and quadrilateral tetramers, and other nanostructures. Our approach improves the flexibility and stability of metallic nanostructures, simplifying both their design and their operation. It promises universal applicability in the fabrication of metamaterials, biosensors, and surface plasma nanooptics.

Synthesis and Prospects of Holey Two-dimensional Platinum-group Metals in Electrocatalysis

Advanced electrocatalysts can enable the widespread implementation of clean energy technologies. This paper reviews an emerging class of electrocatalytic materials comprising holey two-dimensional free-standing Pt-group metal (h-2D-PGM) nanosheets, which are categorically challenging to synthesize but inherently rich in all the qualities necessary to counter the kinetic and thermodynamic challenges of an electrochemical conversion process with high catalytic efficiency and stability. Although the 2D anisotropic growth of typical nonlayered metal crystals has succeeded and partly improved their atom-utilization efficiency, regularly distributed in-planar porosity can further optimize three critical factors that govern efficient electrocatalysis process: mass diffusion, electron transfer, and surface reactivity. However, producing such advanced morphological features within h-2D-PGMs is difficult unless they are specially engineered using approaches such as templating or kinetic ramification during 2D growth or controlled etching of preformed 2D-PGM solids. Therefore, this review highlighting the successful fabrication of various porous PGM nanosheets and their electrocatalytic benefits involving smart nanoscale features could inspire next-generation scientific and technological innovations toward securing a sustainable energy future.

Ag triangle nanoplates assembled on PVC/SEBS membrane as flexible SERS substrates for skin cortisol sensing

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based on rigid substrates has been widely used in biomedical detection due to its high sensitivity and specificity. However, the tedious operation steps for preparing SERS rigid substrates limited their applications in real-world detection. Compared with general rigid substrate, the flexible substrate has the advantages of simple preparation and easy portability, which are suitable for rapid, wearable and personalized detection in the field of point-of-care test. Herein, the flexible SERS substrates employing copolymer were fabricated and used for detection of skin cortisol, a biomarker for evaluating psychological stress in sweat. Silver triangle nanoplates with sharp corner were used as enhanced particles, and transferred to polyvinyl chloride/styrene-ethylene-butene-styrene copolymer (PVC/SEBS) film through three-phase interface self-assembly. By adjusting the size of silver nanoparticles, the ratio of PVC to SEBS in the polymer film, and the number of transfers of self-assembled silver films, the enhancement effect of the flexible SERS substrate was maximized. In addition, functionalization of the flexible SERS substrate with cortisol antibodies is used to achieve specific detection of cortisol on the skin surface. Under the optimal conditions, the Raman peak intensities at 1268 and 1500 cm-1 of the cortisol had a good linear relationship with the logarithm of its concentration in the range of 10-7 to 10-3 M, and the detection limits were 5.47 × 10-8 M and 5.51 × 10-8 M, respectively. The flexible silver triangle nanoplates SERS substrate constructed by self-assembly in the three-phase interface has the characteristics of good specificity and high sensitivity, which has potential for transdermal cortisol wearable detection, providing a feasible method for the rapid evaluating psychological stress level.

Photo-enhanced dehydrogenation of formic acid on Pd-based hybrid plasmonic nanostructures

Coupling visible light with Pd-based hybrid plasmonic nanostructures has effectively enhanced formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation at room temperature. Unlike conventional heating to achieve higher product yield, the plasmonic effect supplies a unique surface environment through the local electromagnetic field and hot charge carriers, avoiding unfavorable energy consumption and attenuated selectivity. In this minireview, we summarized the latest advances in plasmon-enhanced FA dehydrogenation, including geometry/size-dependent dehydrogenation activities, and further catalytic enhancement by coupling local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) with Fermi level engineering or alloying effect. Furthermore, some representative cases were taken to interpret the mechanisms of hot charge carriers and the local electromagnetic field on molecular adsorption/activation. Finally, a summary of current limitations and future directions was outlined from the perspectives of mechanism and materials design for the field of plasmon-enhanced FA decomposition.

Synthesis of 2H/fcc-Heterophase AuCu Nanostructures for Highly Efficient Electrochemical CO2 Reduction at Industrial Current Densities

Structural engineering of nanomaterials offers a promising way for developing high-performance catalysts toward catalysis. However, the delicate modulation of thermodynamically unfavorable nanostructures with unconventional phases still remains a challenge. Here, the synthesis of hierarchical AuCu nanostructures is reported with hexagonal close-packed (2H-type)/face-centered cubic (fcc) heterophase, high-index facets, planar defects (e.g., stacking faults, twin boundaries, and grain boundaries), and tunable Cu content. The obtained 2H/fcc Au99 Cu1 hierarchical nanosheets exhibit excellent performance for the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to produce CO, outperforming the 2H/fcc Au91 Cu9 and fcc Au99 Cu1 . The experimental results, especially those obtained by in-situ differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy and attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, suggest that the enhanced catalytic performance of 2H/fcc Au99 Cu1 arises from the unconventional 2H/fcc heterophase, high-index facets, planar defects, and appropriate alloying of Cu. Impressively, the 2H/fcc Au99 Cu1 shows CO Faradaic efficiencies of 96.6% and 92.6% at industrial current densities of 300 and 500 mA cm-2 , respectively, as well as good durability, placing it among the best CO2 reduction electrocatalysts for CO production. The atomically structural regulation based on phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN) provides an avenue for the rational design and preparation of high-performance electrocatalysts for various catalytic applications.

Polysaccharides and proteins based bionanocomposites as smart packaging materials: From fabrication to food packaging applications a review

Food industry is the biggest and rapidly growing industries all over the world. This sector consumes around 40 % of the total plastic produced worldwide as packaging material. The conventional packaging material is mainly petrochemical based. However, these petrochemical based materials impose serious concerns towards environment after its disposal as they are nondegradable. Thus, in search of an appropriate replacement for conventional plastics, biopolymers such as polysaccharides (starch, cellulose, chitosan, natural gums, etc.), proteins (gelatin, collagen, soy protein, etc.), and fatty acids find as an option but again limited by its inherent properties. Attention on the initiatives towards the development of more sustainable, useful, and biodegradable packaging materials, leading the way towards a new and revolutionary green era in the food sector. Eco-friendly packaging materials are now growing dramatically, at a pace of about 10-20 % annually. The recombination of biopolymers and nanomaterials through intercalation composite technology at the nanoscale demonstrated some mesmerizing characteristics pertaining to both biopolymer and nanomaterials such as rigidity, thermal stability, sensing and bioactive property inherent to nanomaterials as well as biopolymers properties such as flexibility, processability and biodegradability. The dramatic increase of scientific research in the last one decade in the area of bionanocomposites in food packaging had reflected its potential as a much-required and important alternative to conventional petroleum-based material. This review presents a comprehensive overview on the importance and recent advances in the field of bionanocomposite and its application in food packaging. Different methods for the fabrication of bionanocomposite are also discussed briefly. Finally, a clear perspective and future prospects of bionanocomposites in food packaging were presented.

From Multi- to Single-Hollow Trimetallic Nanocrystals by Ultrafast Heating

Metal nanocrystals (NCs) display unique physicochemical features that are highly dependent on nanoparticle dimensions, anisotropy, structure, and composition. The development of synthesis methodologies that allow us to tune such parameters finely emerges as crucial for the application of metal NCs in catalysis, optical materials, or biomedicine. Here, we describe a synthetic methodology to fabricate hollow multimetallic heterostructures using a combination of seed-mediated growth routes and femtosecond-pulsed laser irradiation. The envisaged methodology relies on the coreduction of Ag and Pd ions on gold nanorods (Au NRs) to form Au@PdAg core-shell nanostructures containing small cavities at the Au-PdAg interface. The excitation of Au@PdAg NRs with low fluence femtosecond pulses was employed to induce the coalescence and growth of large cavities, forming multihollow anisotropic Au@PdAg nanostructures. Moreover, single-hollow alloy AuPdAg could be achieved in high yield by increasing the irradiation energy. Advanced electron microscopy techniques, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) tomography, X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, and finite differences in the time domain (FDTD) simulations allowed us to characterize the morphology, structure, and elemental distribution of the irradiated NCs in detail. The ability of the reported synthesis route to fabricate multimetallic NCs with unprecedented hollow nanostructures offers attractive prospects for the fabrication of tailored high-entropy alloy nanoparticles.

Molybdenum oxide nanotube caps decorated with ultrafine Ag nanoparticles: Synthesis and antimicrobial activity

In the contemporary era, microorganisms, spanning bacteria and viruses, are increasingly acknowledged as emerging contaminants in the environment, presenting significant risks to public health. Nevertheless, conventional methods for disinfecting these microorganisms are often ineffective. Additionally, they come with disadvantages such as high energy usage, negative environmental consequences, increased expenses, and the generation of harmful byproducts. The development of next-generation antifungal and antibacterial agents is dependent on newly synthesized nanomaterials with inherent antimicrobial behavior. In this study, we report an arc-discharge method to synthesize MoOx nanosheets and microbelts, followed by decorating them with ultrafine Ag nanoparticles (NPs). Scanning and transmission electron microscopies show that Ag NPs formation on the Molybdenum oxide nanostructures rolls them into nanotube caps (NTCs), revealing inner and outer diameters of approximately 19.8 nm and 105.5 nm, respectively. Additionally, the Ag NPs are ultrafine, with sizes in the range of 5-8 nm. Results show that the prepared NTCs exhibit dose-dependent sensitivity to both planktonic and biofilm cells of Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. The anti-biofilm activity in terms of biofilm inhibition ranged from 19.7 to 77.2% and 11.3-82.3%, while removal of more than 70% and 90% of preformed biofilms was achieved for E. coli and C. albicans, respectively, showing good potential for antimicrobial coating. Initial MoOx exhibits positive potential, while Ag-decorated Molybdenum oxide NTCs show dual potential effects (positive for Molybdenum oxide NTCs and negative for Ag NPs. Molybdenum oxide NTCs, with their strong positive potential, efficiently attract microbes due to their negatively charged cell surfaces, facilitating the antimicrobial effect of Ag NPs, leading to cell damage and death. These findings suggest that the synthesized NPs could serve as a suitable coating for biomedical applications.

Shaping Electronic Flows with Strongly Correlated Physics

Nonequilibrium quantum transport is of central importance in nanotechnology. Its description requires the understanding of strong electronic correlations that couple atomic-scale phenomena to the nanoscale. So far, research in correlated transport has focused predominantly on few-channel transport, precluding the investigation of cross-scale effects. Recent theoretical advances enable the solution of models that capture the interplay between quantum correlations and confinement beyond a few channels. This problem is the focus of this study. We consider an atomic impurity embedded in a metallic nanosheet spanning two leads, showing that transport is significantly altered by tuning only the phase of a single local hopping parameter. Furthermore─depending on this phase─correlations reshape the electronic flow throughout the sheet, either funneling it through the impurity or scattering it away from a much larger region. This demonstrates the potential for quantum correlations to bridge length scales in the design of nanoelectronic devices and sensors.

Recent Progress on Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials

As a key structural parameter, phase depicts the arrangement of atoms in materials. Normally, a nanomaterial exists in its thermodynamically stable crystal phase. With the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials with unconventional crystal phases, which rarely exist in their bulk counterparts, or amorphous phase have been prepared using carefully controlled reaction conditions. Together these methods are beginning to enable phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), i.e., the synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional phases and the transformation between different phases, to obtain desired properties and functions. This Review summarizes the research progress in the field of PEN. First, we present representative strategies for the direct synthesis of unconventional phases and modulation of phase transformation in diverse kinds of nanomaterials. We cover the synthesis of nanomaterials ranging from metal nanostructures such as Au, Ag, Cu, Pd, and Ru, and their alloys; metal oxides, borides, and carbides; to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and 2D layered materials. We review synthesis and growth methods ranging from wet-chemical reduction and seed-mediated epitaxial growth to chemical vapor deposition (CVD), high pressure phase transformation, and electron and ion-beam irradiation. After that, we summarize the significant influence of phase on the various properties of unconventional-phase nanomaterials. We also discuss the potential applications of the developed unconventional-phase nanomaterials in different areas including catalysis, electrochemical energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors), solar cells, optoelectronics, and sensing. Finally, we discuss existing challenges and future research directions in PEN.
