Carbene-coated metal nanoparticles for in vivo applications

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) are well-recognized ligands of choice for preparing robust transition metal species. However, their use for fabrication of biomedically relevant nanoparticles has been limited to the synthesis of non-targeted particles showing increased tolerance to different aqueous coagulants. In this work, the first example of carbene-coated metal nanoparticles suitable for in vivo applications is presented. Directed design of a novel biscarbene NHC ligand allowed to prepare the first magnetite/gold (Fe3O4@AuNP@NHC) nanostructures and carbene gold (AuNP@NHC) nanoparticles with significant stability in aqueous solutions and enhanced ability to form bioconjugates. Furthermore, these nanoparticles exhibit an extraordinary property for inorganic nanoparticles: they can endure several additive-free air drying/redispersion cycles without deterioration of their colloidal behavior. Bioconjugated AuNP@NHC and multimodal Fe3O4@AuNP@NHC demonstrated a successful performance in three distinct applications: lateral flow tests, specific cancer cell targeting, and bioimaging. Thus, the results show the notable advantages of the N-heterocyclic carbene coating of inorganic nanoparticles and their utility for complex biomedical applications.

A Coppoborylene Stabilized by Multicenter Covalent Bonding and Its Amphoteric Reactivity to CO

A cationic copper-stabilized coppoborylene was prepared and structurally characterized via infrared photodissociation spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. This structure exemplifies a new class of borylenes stabilized by three-center-two-electron metal-boron-metal covalent bonding interaction, displaying exceptional σ-acidity and unparalleled π-donor capability for CO activation that outperforms all of the known transition metal cations and is comparable or even superior to the documented base-trapped borylenes. Its neutral form represents a monovalent boron compound with a strongly reactive amphoteric boron center built on transition-metal-boron bonds, which inspires the design and synthesis of new members of the borylene family.

Metal-ligand bond in group-11 complexes and nanoclusters

Density functional theory is used to study geometric, energetic, and electronic properties of metal-ligand bonds in a series of group-11 metal complexes and ligand-protected metal clusters. We study complexes as the forms of M-L (L = SCH3, SC8H9, PPh3, NHCMe, NHCEt, NHCiPr, NHCBn, CCMe, CCPh) and L1-M-L2 (L1 = NHCBn, PPh3, and L2 = CCPh). Furthermore, we study clusters denoted as [M13L6Br6]- (L = PPh3, NHCMe, NHCEt, NHCiPr, NHCBn). The systems were studied at the standard GGA level using the PBE functional and including vdW corrections via BEEF-vdW. Generally, Au has the highest binding energies, followed by Cu and Ag. PBE and BEEF-vdW functionals show the order Ag-L > Au-L > Cu-L for bond lengths in both M-L complexes and metal clusters. In clusters, the smallest side group (CH3) in NHCs leads to the largest binding energy whereas no significant variations are seen concerning different side groups of NHC in M-L complexes. By analyzing the projected density of states and molecular orbitals in complexes and clusters, the M-thiolate bonds were shown to have σ and π bond characteristics whereas phosphines and carbenes were creating σ bonds to the transition metals. Interestingly, this analysis revealed divergent behavior for M-alkynyl complexes: while the CCMe group displayed both σ and π bonding features, the CCPh ligand was found to possess only σ bond properties in direct head-to-head binding configuration. Moreover, synergetic effects increase the average binding strength to the metal atom significantly in complexes of two different ligands and underline the potential of adding Cu to synthesize structurally richer cluster systems. This study helps in understanding the effects of different ligands on the stability of M-L complexes and clusters and suggests that PPh3 and NHCs-protected Cu clusters are most stable after Au clusters.

NHC catalyzed radical tandem cyclization: an efficient synthesis of α,α-difluoro-γ-lactam derivatives

Herein, an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyzed radical tandem cyclization reaction of N-allylbromodifluoroacetamides and aldehydes has been developed. This method is an efficient protocol for synthesizing α,α-difluoro-γ-lactam derivatives in moderate to good yields (27 examples, up to 88% yield and 10 : 1 dr). This strategy features mild and metal-free conditions, high efficiency, and a broad substrate scope.

Carbene-Decorated Geometrically Constrained Borylenes for Bond Activations

While metal-ligand cooperativity is well-known, studies on element-ligand cooperativity involving main group species are comparatively much less explored. In this study, we computationally designed a few geometrically constrained borylenes supported by different carbenes. Our density functional theory studies indicate that they possess enhanced nucleophilicity as well as electrophilicity, thus rendering them promising candidates for exhibiting borylene-ligand cooperativity. The cooperation between the boron and adjacent carbene centers facilitates different bond activation processes, including the cycloaddition of acetylene across the boron-carbene bond as well as B-H/Si-H bond activation reactions, which have been analyzed in detail. To the best of our knowledge, the borylenes proposed in this study represent the first examples of theoretically proposed geometrically constrained bis(carbene)-stabilized borylenes capable of cooperative activation of enthalpically strong bonds.

Synthesis, Isolation, and Reactivity Studies of 'Naked' Acyclic Gallyl and Indyl Anions

By exploiting the electronic capabilities of the N-heterocyclic boryloxy (NHBO) ligand, we have synthesized "naked" acyclic gallyl [Ga{OB(NDippCH)2}2]- and indyl [In{OB(NDippCH)2}2]- anions (as their [K(2.2.2-crypt)]+ salts) through K+ abstraction from [KGa{OB(NDippCH)2}2] and [KIn{OB(NDippCH)2}2] using 2.2.2-crypt. These systems represent the first O-ligated gallyl/indyl systems, are ultimately accessed from cyclopentadienyl GaI/InI precursors by substitution chemistry, and display nucleophilic reactivity which is strongly influenced by the presence (or otherwise) of the K+ counterion.

Hydrogen splitting at a single phosphorus centre and its use for hydrogenation

Catalytic processes are largely dominated by transition-metal complexes. Main-group compounds that can mimic the behaviour of the transition-metal complexes are of great interest due to their potential to substitute or complement transition metals in catalysis. While a few main-group molecular centres were shown to activate dihydrogen via the oxidative addition process, catalytic hydrogenation using these species has remained challenging. Here we report the synthesis, isolation and full characterization of the geometrically constrained phosphenium cation with the 2,6-bis(o-carborano)pyridine pincer-type ligand. Notably, this cation can activate the H-H bond by oxidative addition to a single PIII cationic centre, producing a dihydrophosphonium cation. This phosphenium cation is also capable of catalysing hydrogenation reactions of C=C double bonds and fused aromatic systems, making it a main-group compound that can both activate H2 at a single molecular main-group centre and be used for catalytic hydrogenation. This finding shows the potential of main-group compounds, in particular phosphorus-based compounds, to serve as metallomimetic hydrogenation catalysts.

L→S Coordination Complexes Containing Benzothiazol-2-ylidene Ligand: Quantum Chemical Analysis and Synthesis

(NHC)→E coordination interactions were known where NHC is an N-heterocyclic carbene, and E is a main group element (B, C, N, Si, P). Recently, it was suggested that compounds with (NHC)→S coordination chemistry are also possible. This work reports quantum chemical analysis and synthesis of (NHC)→S-R(+) complexes in which benzothiazol-2-ylidene acts as a ligand. A Density functional study established that (NHC)→S interaction can best be described as a coordination interaction. Synthetic efforts were made, initially, to generate divalent sulfur compounds containing benzothiazole substituents. N-alkylation of the heterocyclic ring in these sulfides using methyl triflate led to the generation of the desired products with (NHC)→S coordination chemistry, which involves the in situ generation of NHC ring ligands. The observed changes in the 13C NMR spectra, before and after methylation, confirmed the change in the electronic character of the C-S bond from a covalent character to a coordination character.

NHC-Supported 2-Sila and 2-Germavinylidenes: Synthesis, Dynamics, First Reactivity and Theoretical Studies

2-tetrelavinylidenes (C=EH2; E=Si, Ge) are according to quantum chemical studies the least stable isomers on the [E,C,2H] potential energy hypersurface isomerizing easily via the trans-bent tetrelaacetylenes HE≡CH to the thermodynamically most stable 1-tetrelavinylidenes (E=CH2). Consequently, experimental studies on 2-tetrelavinylidenes (C=ER2) and their derivatives are lacking. Herein we report experimental and theoretical studies of the first N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) supported 2-silavinylidene (NHC)C=SiBr(Tbb) (1-Si: NHC=C[N(Dipp)CH]2, Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl, Tbb=2,6-bis[bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl]-4-tert-butylphenyl) and the isovalent 2-germavinylidenes (NHC)C=GeBr(R) (1-Ge, 1-GeMind: R=Tbb, Mind (1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7-octamethyl-s-hydrindacene-4-yl)). The NHC-supported 2-tetrelavinylidenes were obtained selectively from the 1,2-dibromoditetrelenes (E)-(R)BrE=EBr(R) using the diazoolefin (NHC)CN2 as vinylidene transfer reagent. 1-E (E=Si, Ge) have a planar vinylidene core, a bent-dicoordinated vinylidene carbon atom (CVNL), a very short E=CVNL bond and an almost orthogonal orientation of the NHC five-membered ring to the vinylidene core. Quantum chemical analysis of the electronic structures of 1-E suggest a significantly bent 1-tetrelaallene and tetrelyne character. NMR studies shed light into the dynamics of 1-E involving NHC-rotation around the CVNL-CNHC bond with a low activation barrier. Furthermore, the synthetic potential of 1-E is demonstrated by the synthesis and full characterization of the unprecedented NHC-supported bromogermynes BrGe=C(EBr2Tbb)(NHC) (2-SiGe: E=Si; 2-GeGe: E=Ge).

Chemically Accurate Singlet-Triplet Gaps of Arylcarbenes from Local Hybrid Density Functionals

Singlet-triplet (ST) gaps are key descriptors of carbenes, because their properties and reactivity are strongly spin-dependent. However, the theoretical prediction of ST gaps is challenging and generally thought to require elaborate correlated wave function methods or double-hybrid density functionals. By evaluating two recent test sets of arylcarbenes (AC12 and AC18), we show that local hybrid functionals based on the "common t" local mixing function (LMF) model achieve mean absolute errors below 1 kcal/mol at a computational cost only slightly higher than that of global hybrid functionals. An analysis of correlation contributions to the ST gaps suggests that the accuracy of the common t-LMF model is mainly due to an improved description of nondynamical correlation which, unlike exchange, is not additive in each spin-channel. Although spin-nonadditivity can be achieved using the local spin polarization alone, using the "common", i.e., spin-unresolved, iso-orbital indicator t for constructing the LMF is found to be critical for consistent accuracy in ST gaps of arylcarbenes. The results support the view of LHs as vehicles to improve the description of nondynamical correlation rather than sophisticated exchange mixing approaches.

Antimony Redox Catalysis: Hydroboration of Disulfides through Unique Sb(I)/Sb(III) Redox Cycling

The stibinidene ArSbI (Ar = [2,6-(tBuN═CH)2-C6H3], 1) reacts with S2Tol2 (Tol = p-tolyl) to form ArSbIII(STol)2 (2), which upon treatment with pinacolborane, regenerates 1. These processes unveil an unprecedented antimony redox catalysis involving Sb(I)/Sb(III) cycling for the hydroboration of organic disulfides. Elementary reaction studies and density functional theory calculations support that the catalysis mimics transition metal processes, proceeding through oxidative addition, ligand metathesis, and reductive elimination. The thiophenols and sulfidoborates generated from the hydroboration of disulfides react in situ with α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds with the assistance of 1 as a base catalyst. These tandem reactions establish a one-pot synthetic method for β-sulfido carbonyl compounds, in which a stibinidene functions as a redox catalyst and a base catalyst successively, illustrating the versatility and efficiency of antimony catalysis in organic synthesis.

Organo Chalcogenone-Triggered Luminescent Copper(I) Clusters for Light Emitting Applications

A novel organo sulfur and selenium-controlled emission behavior in discrete copper(I) clusters has been demonstrated for the first time. The pentanuclear [Cu5Br5(L1)2] (1), trinuclear [Cu3Br3(L2)2] (2), dinuclear [Cu2I2(L1)2] (3), and tetranuclear [Cu4I4(L2)2CH3CN] (4) copper(I) discrete clusters have been synthesized from the reaction between L1 [L1 = 1-isopropyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl)-imidazol-2-thione] or L2 [L2 = 1-isopropyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl)-imidazol-2-selone] chelating ligands and corresponding copper(I) halide salts. These new clusters have been characterized by FT-IR, UV-visible, thermogravimetric analysis, and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that 1-4 consists of abundant d10-d10 interactions. The structural and bonding features of clusters have been investigated using density functional theory calculations. Notably, the L2-ligated 2 and 4 are poorly emissive, while L1-ligated 1 and 3 showed strong emission in the orange and green regions, respectively. The time-dependent density functional theory natural transition orbital calculations of 1 and 3 reveal the nature of the transitions contributed by 3MLCT/3LLCT/3ILCT. Photoluminescence quantum yields of 1 and 3 are 19 and 11%, with average lifetimes of 21.55 and 6.57 μs, respectively. 1 and 3 were coated on prototype LED bulbs for light-emitting performance.

Bisgermylene-Stabilized Stannylone: Catalytic Reduction of Nitrous Oxide and Nitro Compounds via Element-Ligand Cooperativity

This study describes the synthesis, structural characterization, and catalytic application of a bis(germylene)-stabilized stannylone (2). The reduction of digermylated stannylene (1) with 2.2 equiv of potassium graphite (KC8) leads to the formation of stannylone 2 as a green solid in 78% yield. Computational studies showed that stannylone 2 possesses a formal Sn(0) center and a delocalized 3-c-2-e π-bond in the Ge2Sn core, which arises from back-donation of the p-type lone pair electrons on the Sn atom to the vacant orbitals of the Ge atoms. Stannylone 2 can serve as an efficient precatalyst for the selective reduction of nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitroarenes (ArNO2) with the formation of dinitrogen (N2) and hydrazines (ArNH-NHAr), respectively. Exposure of 2 with N2O (1 atm) resulted in the insertion of two oxygen atoms into the Ge-Ge and Ge-Sn bonds, yielding the germyl(oxyl)stannylene (3). Moreover, the stoichiometric reaction of 2 with 1-chloro-4-nitrobenzene afforded an amido(oxyl)stannylene (4) through the complete scission of the N-O bonds of the nitroarene. Stannylenes 3 and 4 serve as catalytically active species for the catalytic reduction of nitrous oxide and nitroarenes, respectively. Mechanistic studies reveal that the cooperation of the low-valent Ge and Sn centers allows for multiple electron transfers to cleave the N-O bonds of N2O and ArNO2. This approach presents a new strategy for catalyzing the deoxygenation of N2O and ArNO2 using a zerovalent tin compound.

Understanding the Impact of Group 14 Elements on the Reactivity of [1 + 2] Cycloaddition Reaction between a Cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)carbene Analogue with a Group 14 Element and a Heavy Acetylene Molecule

Computational exploration using the density functional theory framework (M06-2X-D3/def2-TZVP) was undertaken to investigate the [1 + 2] cycloaddition reaction between a five-membered-ring heterocyclic carbene analogue (G14-Rea; G14 = group 14 element) and a heavy acetylene molecule (G14G14-Rea). It was theoretically observed that exclusively Si-Rea, Ge-Rea, and Sn-Rea demonstrate the capacity to participate in the [1 + 2] cycloaddition reaction with the triply bonded SiSi-Rea. In addition, only three heavy acetylenes (SiSi-Rea, GeGe-Rea, and SnSn-Rea) can catalyze the [1 + 2] cycloaddition reaction with Si-Rea. Our theoretical findings elucidated that the reactivity trend observed in these [1 + 2] cycloaddition reactions primarily arise from the deformation energies of the distorted G14G14-Rea. Also, our study reveals that the bonding characteristics of their respective transition states are controlled by the singlet-singlet interaction (donor-acceptor interaction), rather than the triplet-triplet interaction (electron-sharing interaction). Additionally, our work demonstrates that the bonding behavior between G14-Rea and G14G14-Rea is predominantly determined by the filled p-π orbital of G14G14-Rea (HOMO) → the empty perpendicular p-π orbital of G14-Rea (LUMO), rather than the vacant p-π* orbital of G14G14-Rea (LUMO) ← the filled sp2 orbital of G14-Rea (HOMO).

Germaaluminocenes-Masked Heterofulvenes

Germaaluminocenes are formed by salt metathesis reactions of dipotassium germacyclopentadienediides with pentamethylcyclopentadienylaluminum dichloride. The reactivity pattern of these sandwich complexes is determined by the electrophilic central aluminum atom and by the nucleophilic dicoordinated germanium center. Surprisingly, the products formed by reactions with Lewis acids, Lewis bases, amphiphiles and compounds with polar double bonds are those expected from the reaction of a hypothetical aluminagermapentafulvene with these types of reagents. This suggests that germaaluminocenes are synthetic equivalents to these pentafulvenes.

Alkyl backbone variations in common β-diketiminate ligands and applications to N-heterocyclic silylene chemistry

We report the extension of the common β-diketimine proligand class, RArnacnacH (HC(RCNAr)2H), where R is an alkyl group such as Et or iPr, plus Ph, and Ar is a sterically demanding aryl substituent such as Dip = 2,6-diispropylphenyl, Dep = 2,6-diethylphenyl, Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl or mesityl, Xyl = 2,6-dimethylphenyl, via one-pot condensation procedures. When a condensation reaction is carried out using the chemical dehydrating agent PPSE (polyphosphoric acid trimethylsilylester), β-diketiminate phosphorus(V) products such as (iPrMesnacnac)PO2 can also be obtained, which can be converted to the respective proligand iPrMesnacnacH via alkaline hydrolysis. The RArnacnacH proligands can be converted to their alkali metal complexes with common methods and we have found that deprotonation of iPrDipnacnacH is significantly more sluggish than that of related β-diketimines with smaller backbone alkyl groups. The basicity of the RArnacnac- anions can play a role in the success of their salt metathesis chemistry and we have prepared and structurally characterised the EtDipnacnac-derived silicon(II) compounds (EtDipnacnac)SiBr and (EtDipnacnac')Si, where EtDipnacnac' is the deprotonated variant MeCHC(NDip)CHC(NDip)Et.

Silylimidazolium Hexafluorophosphate Salts as Synthetic Precursors to N-Heterocyclic Carbene Pentafluorophosphorus Adducts

N-Heterocyclic carbene pentafluorophosphorus (NHC-PF5) adducts are six-coordinate phosphorus(v) compounds with emerging applications but poor synthetic accessibility. We have developed a simple and high yielding protocol for synthesizing imidazolylidene NHC-PF5 adducts from silylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate salts. Using this methodology, we have prepared a series of NHC-PF5 adducts in high yields, including new NHC-PF5 building blocks amenable to subsequent synthetic diversification. We also demonstrate that a similar approach enables access to analogous, synthetically elusive NHC-BF3 and NHC-SbF5 adducts.

Molecular-strain induced phosphinidene reactivity of a phosphanorcaradiene

Phosphanorcaradienes are an appealing class of phosphorus compounds that can serve as synthons of transient phosphinidenes. However, the synthesis of such species is a formidable task owing to their intrinsic high reactivity. Herein we report straightforward synthesis, characterization and reactivity studies of a phosphanorcaradiene, in which one of the benzene rings in the flanking fluorenyl substituents is intramolecularly dearomatized through attachment to the phosphorus atom. It is facilely obtained by the reduction of phosphorus(III) dichloride precursor with potassium graphite. Despite being thermally robust, it acts as a synthetic equivalent of a transient phosphinidene. It reacts with trimethylphosphine and isonitrile to yield phosphanylidene-phosphorane and 1-phospha-3-azaallene, respectively. When it is treated with one and two molar equivalents of azide, iminophosphane and bis(imino)phosphane are isolated, respectively. Moreover, it is capable of activating ethylene and alkyne to afford [1 + 2] cycloaddition products, as well as oxidative cleavage of Si-H and N-H bonds to yield secondary phosphines. All the reactions proceed smoothly at room temperature without the presence of transition metals. The driving force for these reactions is most likely the high ring-constraint of the three-membered PC2 ring and recovery of the aromaticity of the benzene ring.

How to Decarbonize N-Heterocyclic Carbenes (NHCs): The simple Alane Adducts (NHC) ⋅ AlR3 (R=H, Me, Et)

The reaction of the amine-stabilized alane (NMe3) ⋅ AlH3 1 with the backbone-saturated N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) SIDipp (SIDipp=1,3-bis-{2,6-di-iso-propyl-phenyl}-imidazolidin-2-ylidene) at 0 °C yielded the NHC alane adduct (SIDipp) ⋅ AlH3 2. Reaction at elevated temperatures or prolonged reaction at room temperature gave the product of a ring expansion reaction (RER) of the NHC, (NMe3) ⋅ AlH(RER-SIDippH2) 3 ⋅ (NMe3). Subsequent reaction of the latter with sterically less hindered NHCs (IMeMe {=1,3,4,5-tetramethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene}, IiPrMe {=1,3-di-iso-propyl-4,5-dimethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene}, and IiPr {=1,3-di-iso-propyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene}) afforded the NHC-stabilized RER-products (NHC) ⋅ AlH(RER-SIDippH2) 3 ⋅ (NHC) (NHC=IMeMe, IiPrMe, IiPr), while no reaction was observed with the sterically more demanding NHCs IDipp (=1,3-bis-{2,6-di-iso-propyl-phenyl}-imidazolin-2-ylidene), SIDipp and ItBu (=1,3-di-tert-butyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene). The compounds 3 ⋅ (NHC) were also obtained starting from (SIDipp) ⋅ AlH3 2 and NHC at room temperature. Heating solutions of (SIDipp) ⋅ AlH3 2 without additional base to 95 °C resulted in decarbonization of the NHC and substitution of the carbene carbon atom with aluminum hydride under loss of ethene. Subsequent dimerization afforded cis-[AlH{μ-N(Dipp)CH2CH2N(Dipp)}]2 4_dimer. Heating solutions of the NHC-ligated aluminum alkyls (SIDipp) ⋅ AlR3 2R (R=Me, Et) to 145 °C instead led to complete scission of the NHC backbone with evolution of ethene and isolation of the dialkylaluminium(III) amidinates {DippNC(R)NDipp}AlR2 5R (R=Me, Et).

Carbene-Stabilized Phosphagermylenylidene: A Heavier Analog of Isonitrile

Phosphagermylenylidenes (R-P═Ge), as heavier analogs of isonitriles, whether in their free state or as complexes with a Lewis base, have not been previously identified as isolable entities. In this study, we report the synthesis of a stable monomeric phosphagermylenylidene within the coordination sphere of a Lewis base under ambient conditions. This species was synthesized by Lewis base-induced dedimerization of a cyclic phosphagermylenylidene dimer or via Me3SiCl elimination from a phosphinochlorogermylene framework. The deliberate integration of a bulky, electropositive N-heterocyclic boryl group at the phosphorus site, combined with coordination stabilization by a cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene at the low-valent germanium site, effectively mitigated its natural tendency toward oligomerization. Structural analyses and theoretical calculations have demonstrated that this unprecedented species features a P═Ge double bond, characterized by conventional electron-sharing π and σ bonds, complemented by lone pairs at both the phosphorus and germanium atoms. Preliminary reactivity studies show that this base-stabilized phosphagermylenylidene demonstrates facile release of ligands at the Ge atom, coordination to silver through the lone pair on P, and versatile reactivity including both (cyclo)addition and cleavage of the P═Ge double bond.

Recent advances in the stabilization of monomeric stibinidene chalcogenides and stibine chalcogenides

The elucidation of novel bonding situations at heavy p-block elements has greatly advanced recent efforts to access useful reactivity at earth-abundant main-group elements. Molecules with unsaturated bonds between heavier, electropositive elements and lighter, electronegative elements are often highly polarized and competent in small-molecule activations, but the reactivity of these molecules may be quenched by self-association of monomers to form oligomeric species where the polar, unsaturated groups are assembled in a head-to-tail fashion. In this Frontier, we discuss the synthetic strategies employed to isolate monomeric σ2,λ3-stibinidene chalcogenides (RSbCh) and monomeric σ4,λ5-stibine chalcogenides (R3SbCh). These classes of molecules each feature polarized antimony-chalcogenide bonds (Sb = Ch/Sb+-Ch-). We highlight how the synthesis and isolation of these molecules has led to the discovery of novel reactivity and has shed light on fundamental aspects of inorganic structure and bonding. Despite these advances, there are critical aspects of this chemistry that remain underdeveloped and we provide our perspective on yet-unrealized synthetic targets that may be achieved with the continued development of the strategies described herein.

An isolable, chelating bis[cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene] stabilizes a strongly bent, dicoordinate Ni(0) complex

Chelating ligands have had a tremendous impact in coordination chemistry and catalysis. Notwithstanding their success as strongly σ-donating and π-accepting ligands, to date no chelating bis[cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes] have been reported. Herein, we describe a chelating, C2-symmetric bis[cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene] ligand, which was isolated as a racemic mixture. The isolation and structural characterization of its isostructural, pseudotetrahedral complexes with iron, cobalt, nickel, and zinc dihalides featuring eight-membered metallacycles demonstrates the binding ability of the bis(carbene). Reduction of the nickel(II) dibromide with potassium graphite produces a dicoordinate nickel(0) complex that features one of the narrowest angles measured in any unsupported dicoordinate transition metal complexes.

Frustrated Lewis pair adducts of alkynyl-capped tetrelenes

The frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) adducts PB{ECl2} (PB = iPr2P(C6H4)BCy2; Cy = cyclohexyl; E = Si, Ge) were used to access a bis(alkynyl)-functionalized silylene and a germylene; the goal behind preparing these species was to obtain new unsaturated main group polymers [E(CCSiMe3)2]n upon heating. While the silylene adduct PB{Si(CCSiMe3)2} was stable up to 150 °C, the heavier element congener PB{Ge(CCSiMe3)2} underwent a complicated rearrangement process accompanied by Cy-group migration and Ge(II)-alkyne coordination. Density functional theory computations were performed to understand the mechanistic pathway for the unusual rearrangement of PB{Ge(CCSiMe3)2}.

Fluorenyl-tethered N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC): an exclusive C-donor ligand for heteroleptic calcium and strontium chemistry

Exclusive C-donating ligands are rarely used with kinetically labile heavier alkaline earths (Ca, Sr, Ba). We report herein the aptitude of a combination of NHC with fluorenyl connected by a flexible -(CH2)2- linker as a ligand support for heteroleptic Ca- and Sr-N(SiMe3)2 and iodides. The Ca-N(SiMe3)2 complex even catalyzes the intramolecular hydroamination of aminoalkenes to showcase the effectiveness of this ligand framework.

Recent advances in the chemistry of isolable carbene analogues with group 13-15 elements

Carbenes (R2C:), compounds with a divalent carbon atom containing only six valence shell electrons, have evolved into a broader class with the replacement of the carbene carbon or the RC moiety with main group elements, leading to the creation of main group carbene analogues. These analogues, mirroring the electronic structure of carbenes (a lone pair of electrons and an empty orbital), demonstrate unique reactivity. Over the last three decades, this area has seen substantial advancements, paralleling the innovations in carbene chemistry. Recent studies have revealed a spectrum of unique carbene analogues, such as monocoordinate aluminylenes, nitrenes, and bismuthinidenes, notable for their extraordinary properties and diverse reactivity, offering promising applications in small molecule activation. This review delves into the isolable main group carbene analogues that are in the forefront from 2010 and beyond, spanning elements from group 13 (B, Al, Ga, In, and Tl), group 14 (Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb) and group 15 (N, P, As, Sb, and Bi). Specifically, this review focuses on the potential amphiphilic species that possess both lone pairs of electrons and vacant orbitals. We detail their comprehensive synthesis and stabilization strategies, outlining the reactivity arising from their distinct structural characteristics.

Access to a peri-Annulated Aluminium Compound via C-H Bond Activation by a Cyclic Bis-Aluminylene

Carbocyclic aluminium halides [(ADC)AlX2]2 (2-X) (X=F, Cl, and I) based on an anionic dicarbene (ADC=PhC{N(Dipp)C}2, Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) framework are prepared as crystalline solids by dehydrohalogenations of the alane [(ADC)AlH2]2 (1). KC8 reduction of 2-I affords the peri-annulated Al(III) compound [(ADCH)AlH]2 (4) (ADCH=PhC{N(Dipp)C2(DippH)N}, DippH=2-iPr,6-(Me2C)C6H3)) as a colorless crystalline solid in 76 % yield. The formation of 4 suggests intramolecular insertion of the putative bis-aluminylene species [(ADC)Al]2 (3) into the methine C-H bond of HCMe2 group. Calculations predict singlet ground state for 3, while the conversion of 3 into 4 is thermodynamically favored by 61 kcal/mol. Compounds 2-F, 2-Cl, 2-I, and 4 have been characterized by NMR spectroscopy and their solid-state molecular structures have been established by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Concatenating Structural Constraint Effects at Tin for the Sequential Generation, Stabilization, and Transfer of Acyclic Aminocarbenes

Structural constraint approaches have been employed toward different ends in recent years, from augmenting the nucleophilicity in pyramidalized low-valent p-block compounds to enhancing the Lewis acidities at planarized tetravalent p-block elements. While previous studies exploited these effects separately, this work introduces a strategy to concatenate structural constraint approaches at individual stages of a reaction sequence in a row to unlock a synthetic path unattainable by conventional methodologies. The boosted nucleophilicity resulting from the constrained tetracoordinated calix[4]pyrrolato stannate(II) dianion enables the reductive formation of sterically unprotected acyclic aminocarbenes. These amino carbenes are stabilized at the concomitantly formed square-planar stannane(IV) as air-stable adducts. Transfer of the carbenes onto copper(I) by cooperativity of the calix[4]pyrrole ligand finalizes this protocol to hitherto unreported yet prototypical carbene complexes. Detailed spectroscopic and quantum theoretical analyses establish the synergy of structural constraints and element-ligand cooperation as the linchpin to this reaction path and its selectivity.

Perimidocarbene-Based Tetradentate Platinum(II) Complexes with an Unexpectedly Negligible 3MLCT Character

Two novel six-membered perimidocarbene (PIC)-based tetradentate Pt(II) complexes were designed and successfully synthesized. Systematical experimental and theoretical studies suggest that the PIC moiety greatly affects the frontier orbitals, as well as the photophysical and excited-state properties of the Pt(II) complexes. PtYK2 has a broad emission spectrum peaking at 576 nm with a shoulder band at 620 nm, along with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) value of 100.0 nm at 77 K in 2-MeTHF; however, the emission spectrum is slightly red-shifted with a dominant peak at 610 nm and a FWHM value of 125.0 nm at room temperature in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film. Time-dependent-density functional theory and natural transition orbital analyses reveal that PtYK2 has a 3LC (3πPIC* → πPIC)-dominated character with an unexpectedly negligible contribution of 3MLCT transition (0.68%) in the T1 state, which results in a broad emission spectrum and a relatively low quantum efficiency of 7.4% in the PMMA film.

IZCp and PZCp: Redox Non-innocent Cyclopentadienyl Ligands as Electron Reservoirs for Sandwich Complexes

A long-sustained effort of systematic steric and electronic modification of cyclopentadienyl (Cp) ligands has enabled them to find wide-ranging, valuable applications. Herein, we present two novel Cp ligands: imidazolium- and pyrrolinium-substituted zwitterionic Cps (IZCp and PZCp), whose key utility is redox non-innocence─the ability to participate cooperatively with the metal center in redox reactions. Through the simple metalation of ZCps, the Cr(0) and Mo(0) half-sandwich complexes (IZCp)Cr(CO)3, (PZCp)Cr(CO)3, (IZCp)Mo(CO)3, and (PZCp)Mo(CO)3, respectively, as well as the Ru(II) sandwich complexes [(IZCp)RuCp]PF6 and [(PZCp)RuCp]PF6 were prepared. The sandwich complexes were fully characterized and showed by cyclic voltammetry reversible one-electron reduction at E1/2 potentials ranging from -1.7 to -2.7 V vs Fc/Fc+. These values are unusually low and have not been observed with other Cp ligands due to the instability of the reduced complexes. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the reduced sandwich derivatives with IZCp and PZCp showed their spin densities to be highly delocalized over their ZCp ligand moieties (70-90%). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis of the isolated K[(PZCp)Mo(CO)3] and (PZCp)RuCp also indicated a high degree of ligand-localized radical character. Thus, the IZCp and PZCp ligands act as electron reservoirs to sustain these sandwich complexes in highly reduced states. At the same time, the CO stretching frequencies of K[(PZCp)Mo(CO)3]: νCO 1871, 1748, and 1699 cm-1, rank the [PZCp]- ligand as the strongest electron-donating Cp ligand among the reported CpMo(CO)3 derivatives, whose νCO > 1746 cm-1. In addition, these redox non-innocent Cps were obtained in high yields and found to be practically air- and moisture-stable, unlike typical Cps.

Sequential radical and cationic reactivity at separated sites within one molecule in solution

Distonic radical cations (DRCs) with spatially separated charge and radical sites are expected to show both radical and cationic reactivity at different sites within one molecule. However, such "dual" reactivity has rarely been observed in the condensed phase. Herein we report the isolation of crystalline 1λ2,3λ2-1-phosphonia-3-phosphinyl-cyclohex-4-enes 2a,b˙+, which can be considered delocalized DRCs and were completely characterized by crystallographic, spectroscopic, and computational methods. These DRCs contain a radical and cationic site with seven and six valence electrons, respectively, which are both stabilized via conjugation, yet remain spatially separated. They exhibit reactivity that differs from that of conventional radical cations (CRCs); specifically they show sequential radical and cationic reactivity at separated sites within one molecule in solution.

A stable and true-blue emissive hexacoordinate Si(IV) N-heterocyclic carbene complex and its use in organic light-emitting diodes

A neutral hexacoordinate Si(IV) complex containing two tridentate N-heterocyclic carbene ligands is synthesised and characterized by X-ray crystallography, optical spectroscopy, electrochemistry and computational methods. The stable compound exhibits remarkable deep-blue photoluminescence particularly in the solid state, which enables its use as an electroluminescent material in organic light-emitting diodes.

NHC-ligated indenyl- and fluorenyl-substituted Alanes and Gallanes: synthons towards indenyl- and fluorenyl-bridged (AlC)n-heterocycles (n = 2,3)

Indenyl-(Ind) and fluorenyl-(Fl) substituted NHC-stabilized alanes and gallanes (NHC)·EH2R 1-12 (NHC = IiPrMe, IiPr, IMeMe; E = Al, Ga; R = Ind, Fl) were prepared via reaction of the corresponding NHC-iodoalanes and -gallanes with LiInd and LiFl, respectively. Analogously, the alane adducts with two Ind/Fl substituents (NHC)·AlHR213-18 (NHC = IiPrMe, IiPr, IMeMe; R = Ind, Fl) were obtained by using two equivalents of LiInd/LiFl. Elimination of indene and fluorene was induced thermally affording unusual dimeric and trimeric NHC-alane adducts {(NHC)·AlH2}2-μ-Fl 19-20 and {(NHC)·AlH-μ-R}n21-23 (R = Ind, Fl; n = 2, 3) with bridging indenyl and fluorenyl ligands.

Boosting the π-Acceptor Property of Mesoionic Carbenes by Carbonylation with Carbon Monoxide

We report the room temperature dimerization of carbon monoxide mediated by C4/C5-vicinal anionic dicarbenes Li(ADC) (ADC = ArC{(Dipp)NC}2 ; Dipp = 2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ; Ar = Ph, DMP (4-Me2 NC6 H4 ), Bp (4-PhC6 H4 )) to yield (E)-ethene-1,2-bis(olate) (i.e. - O-C=C-O- = COen ) bridged mesoionic carbene (iMIC) lithium compounds COen -[(iMIC)Li]2 (COen -[iMIC]2 = [ArC{(Dipp)NC}2 (CO)]2 ) in quantitative yields. COen -[(iMIC)Li]2 are highly colored stable solids, exhibit a strikingly small HOMO-LUMO energy gap, and readily undergo 2e-oxidations with selenium, CuCl (or CuCl2 ), and AgCl to afford the dinuclear compounds COon -[(iMIC)E]2 (E = Se, CuCl, AgCl) featuring a 1,2-dione bridged neutral bis-iMIC (i.e. COon -[iMIC]2 = [ArC{(Dipp)NC}2 (C=O)]2 ). COen -[(iMIC)Li]2 undergo redox-neutral salt metathesis reactions with LiAlH4 and (Et2 O)2 BeBr2 and afford COen -[(iMIC)AlH2 ]2 and COen -[(iMIC)BeBr]2 , in which the dianionic COen -moiety remains intact. All compounds have been characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction. Stereoelectronic properties of COon -[iMIC]2 are quantified by experimental and theoretical methods.

Application of phosphorus-bridged rigid, bent bis(NHCs) as dipodal ligands in main group and transition metal chemistry

Phosphorus-bridged rigid, bent bis(N-heterocyclic) carbenes have not been reported, so far, despite having structural features that could make them interesting ligands in coordination and main group element chemistry. In previous reports, we had demonstrated that tuning of σ3- and σ4-phosphorus environments in planarised bis(NHCs) affects electronic properties and can provide additional coordination sites. Herein, we report on first examples of synthesis and conversion of 1,4-diphosphabarrelene-related compounds into rigid bent, doubly P-bridged bis(NHCs). The formation of main group element adducts with substrates from group 13, 14 and 15 illustrates opportunities to access novel scaffolds and to create nonplanar branching points. DFT calculations reveal the new bis(NHCs) to be good candidates as novel soft/hard ligands with up to four coordination sites. The synthesis of a dinuclear Fe(CO)4 complex is demonstrated. The thermal retro-[4 + 2] cycloaddition was theoretically and experimentally explored for a variety of ionic and zwitterionic 1,4-diphosphabarrelenes, and the generation and trapping of a dinuclear Fe(0) bis(NHC) complex with a tricyclic 1σ2,4 σ2-diphosphinine scaffold is presented.

Unveiling Three Interconvertible Redox States of Boraphenalene

Neutral 1-boraphenalene displays the isoelectronic structure of the phenalenyl carbocation and is expected to behave as an attractive organoboron multi-redox system. However, the isolation of new redox states have remained elusive even though the preparation of neutral boron(III)-containing phenalene compounds have been extensively studied. Herein, we have adopted an N-heterocyclic carbene ligand stabilization approach to achieve the first isolation of the stable and ambipolar 1-boraphenalenyl radical 1•. The 1-boraphenalenyl cation 1+ and anion 1- have also been electrochemically observed and chemically isolated, representing new redox forms of boraphenalene for the study of non-Kekulé polynuclear benzenoid molecules. Experimental and theoretical investigations suggest that the interconvertible three-redox-state species undergo reversible electronic structure modifications, which primarily take place on the polycyclic framework of the molecules, exhibiting atypical behavior compared to known donor-stabilized organoboron compounds. Initial reactivity studies, aromaticity evaluations, and photophysical studies show redox-state-dependent trends. While 1+ is luminescent in both the solution and solid states, 1• exhibits boron-centered reactivity and 1- undergoes substitution chemistry on the boraphenalenyl skeleton and serves as a single-electron transfer reductant.

Small molecules (CO2 , iPrNCO, and iPrNCNiPr) activation by the metallomimetics (μ-Hydrido) diborane anion: A DFT investigation on mechanism and chemoselectivity controlling

Main-group metallomimetics provide a new way to replace transition metal complexes to activate inert small molecules under mild conditions. In this work, the activation mechanisms of CO2 , iPrNCO, and iPrNCNiPr by (μ-Hydrido) diborane anion ([1H]- ) have been investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Two different activation sites, BB versus BH bond of [1H]- , are investigated and compared. The results show that these inert molecules can be activated by [1H]- through cycloadditions under mild conditions. The reactions with iPrNCO and iPrNCNiPr are dynamic and thermodynamic controlling, the obtained products are related not only to the energy barrier but also to the stability of the products. Moreover, the competition for BB/BH bond site activation is directly related to the steric effect of small molecules. CO2 , which is without steric hindrance, can only be activated by the BB bond, whereas iPrNCNiPr can only be activated by the BH bond due to the large steric effect. The medium iPrNCO can be activated not only by the BB bond but also by the BH bond. Our study provides theoretical explanations for the reaction activity and chemoselectivity controlling of the title reaction, and displays the potential applications for compounds containing boron-boron bonds and inert small molecule activation.

Air- and photo-stable luminescent carbodicarbene-azaboraacenium ions

Substitution of a C=C bond by an isoelectronic B-N bond is a well-established strategy to alter the electronic structure and stability of acenes. BN-substituted acenes that possess narrow energy gaps have attractive optoelectronic properties. However, they are susceptible to air and/or light. Here we present the design, synthesis and molecular structures of fully π-conjugated cationic BN-doped acenes stabilized by carbodicarbene ligands. They are luminescent in the solution and solid states and show high air and moisture stability. Compared with their neutral BN-substituted counterparts as well as the parent all-carbon acenes, these species display improved quantum yields and small optical gaps. The electronic structures of the azabora-anthracene and azabora-tetracene cations resemble higher-order acenes while possessing high photo-oxidative resistance. Investigations using density functional theory suggest that the stability and photo-physics of these conjugated systems may be ascribed to their cationic nature and the electronic properties of the carbodicarbene.

Carbone stabilized B2 and B22+ - isoelectronic analogues to diborabutyne and diborabutatriene

It has been reported that various unusual main group compounds can be stabilized by coordinating with ligands. Here, we report the use of carbone ligands in stabilizing diboron in its neutral and dicationic states by computational quantum mechanical calculations. The neutral [(L2C)·B2·(CL2)] (L = CO, NHC, PMe3, and cAAC) has singlet non-planar cumulenic-type equilibrium geometry where CL2 groups are almost orthogonal to each other. MO analysis indicates that the [(L2C)·B2·(CL2)] can be considered as formed by the interaction of the B2 fragment in the 1Σg+ excited state with two CL2 ligands having σ- and π-type lone pairs. Accordingly, the π delocalization in the C-B-B-C skeleton consists of two mutually orthogonal allylic anionic-type delocalizations along the C-B-B chain. Since one of the π-delocalized MOs of allylic anionic C-B-B is majorly localized on the carbone carbon atom, the carbone ligands formally act as two-electron ligands. On the other hand, the ground state of [(L2C)·B2·(CL2)]2+ shows a singlet planar/pseudo-planar cumulenic geometry when L = NHC and PMe3. The MO analysis indicates that the C-B-B-C skeleton is similar to that of butatriene, viz. one localized B-B π MO, and two delocalized C-B-B-C π MOs, indicating that each carbone acts as a four-electron ligand. Since CO and cAAC are good π-acceptor ligands, [(L2C)·B2·(CL2)]2+ ions (L = CO and cAAC) have triplet non-planar cumulenic ground states.

Enhancing Precatalyst Performance and Robustness through Aromaticity: Insights from Iridaheteroaromatics

Despite the inherent stability-enhancing benefits of dπ-pπ conjugation-induced aromaticity, metallaaromatic catalysts remain underutilized in this context, despite their reactivity with organic functionalities in stoichiometric reactions. We present a strategy for synthesizing a diverse range of iridaheteroaromatics, (L^L)IrIII(Cp*)I, including iridapyridylidene-indole, iridapyridene-indole, and iridaimidazole, via in situ deprotonation/metalation reactions utilizing [Cp*IrCl2]2 and the respective ligands. These catalysts exhibit enhanced σ-donor and π-acceptor properties, intrinsic σ-π continuum attributes, and versatile binding sites, contributing to stability through enhanced dπ-pπ conjugation-induced aromaticity. Spectroscopic data, X-ray crystallographic data, and density functional theory calculations confirm their aromaticity. These iridaheteroaromatics exhibit formidable catalytic ability across a spectrum of transformations under industrially viable conditions, notably excelling in highly selective cross alkylation and β-alkylation of alcohols and an eco-friendly avenue for quinolone synthesis, achieving remarkably high turnover frequencies (TOFs). Additionally, this method extends to the self-condensation of bioalcohols like ethanol, n-butanol, and n-hexanol in water, replicating conditions frequently encountered in primary fermentation solutions. These iridaheteroaromatics exhibit strong catalytic activity with fast reaction rates, high TOFs, broad substrate compatibility, and remarkable selectivity, displaying their potential as robust catalysts in large-scale applications and emphasizing their practical significance beyond their structural and theoretical importance.

Synthesis and reactivity of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-supported heavier nitrile ylides

The synthesis and isolation of stable heavier analogues of nitrile ylide as N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) adducts of phosphasilenyl-tetrylene [(NHC)(TerAr)Si(H)PE14(TerAr)] (E14 = Ge 1, Sn 2; TerAr = 2,6-Mes2C6H3, NHC = IMe4) are reported. The delocalized Si-P-E14 π-conjugation was examined experimentally and computationally. Interestingly, the germanium derivative 1 exhibits a 1,3-dipolar nature, leading to an unprecedented [3 + 2] cycloaddition with benzaldehyde, resulting in unique heterocycles containing four heteroatoms from group 14, 15, and 16. Further exploiting the nucleophilicity of germanium, activation of the P-P bond of P4 was achieved, leading to a [(NHC)(phosphasilenyl germapolyphide)] complex. Moreover, the [3 + 2] cycloaddition and the σ-bond activation by 1 resemble the characteristics of the classic nitrile ylide.

Bis-[cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene]-derived diradicals

Crystalline polymeric structures of trans-1,4-cyclohexylene bridged N-tethered bis-CAACs in the form of their LiOTf adducts were synthesized and isolated. These were further used as building blocks for the synthesis of crystalline (amino)(carboxy)-based diradicals. The triplet diradical character of these compounds was unambiguously confirmed by the presence of a half-field signal in their EPR spectra. Theoretical calculations show that the singlet state is marginally more stable than the triplet state.

Recent progress in beryllium organometallic chemistry

Beryllium possesses a unique amalgamation of characteristics, its electronegativity included, that not only make it a vital component in a wide range of technical sectors and consumer industries, but also make it an interesting candidate for forming covalently bonded compounds. However, the extremely toxic nature of beryllium, which can cause chronic beryllium disease, has limited the exploration of its chemistry, making beryllium one of the least studied (non-radioactive) elements. The development of selective chelating ligands, sterically encumbered substituents and, moreover, the boom of N-heterocyclic carbenes in organometallic chemistry and main group chemistry has revived the interest in beryllium chemistry. Therefore, some quite remarkable progress in the coordination and organometallic chemistry of beryllium has been made in the last two decades. For example, low oxidation state beryllium compounds, antiaromatic/aromatic beryllium compounds, where beryllium is involved in π-electron delocalization, and the isolation of beryllium-beryllium bonded species have all been achieved. This article provides an oversight over the recent developments in the organometallic chemistry of beryllium.

Isolation of an Anionic Dicarbene Embedded Sn2 P2 Cluster and Reversible CO2 Uptake

Decarbonylation of a cyclic bis-phosphaethynolatostannylene [(ADC)Sn(PCO)]2 based on an anionic dicarbene framework (ADC = PhC{N(Dipp)C}2 ; Dipp = 2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ) under UV light results in the formation of a Sn2 P2 cluster compound [(ADC)SnP]2 as a green crystalline solid. The electronic structure of [(ADC)SnP]2 is analyzed by quantum-chemical calculations. At room temperature, [(ADC)SnP]2 reversibly binds with CO2 and forms [(ADC)2 {SnOC(O)P}SnP]. [(ADC)SnP]2 enables catalytic hydroboration of CO2 and reacts with elemental selenium and Fe2 (CO)9 to afford [(ADC)2 {Sn(Se)P2 }SnSe] and [(ADC)Sn{Fe(CO)4 }P]2 , respectively. All compounds are characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and their solid-state molecular structures are determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Reactivity of [Cp*Fe(η5 -As5 )] towards Carbenes, Silylenes and Germylenes

The reaction behavior of [Cp*Fe(η5 -As5 )] (I) (Cp*=C5 Me5 ) towards carbenes and their heavier analogs was investigated. The reaction of I with NHCs (NHCs=N-heterocyclic carbenes) results in the first substitution products of polyarsenic ligand complexes by NHCs [Cp*Fe(η4 -As5 NHC)] (1 a: NHC=IMe=1,3,4,5-tetramethylimidazolin-2-ylidene, 1 b: NHC=IMes=1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene). In contrast, the reaction of I with Et CAAC (Et CAAC=2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-4,4-diethyl-2,2-dimethyl-pyrrolidin-5-ylidene) leads to a fragmentation and the formation of an unprecedented As6 -sawhorse-type compound [As2 (AsEt CAAC)4 ] (2). The reaction of (LE)2 (L=PhC(Nt Bu)2 ; E=Si, Ge) with I resulted in a rearrangement and an insertion of LE fragments, forming unique silicon- (4: [Cp*Fe(η4 -As4 SiL)], 5 a: [Cp*Fe(η4 -As6 SiL)) and germanium-containing (5 b: [Cp*Fe(η4 -As6 GeL)) cyclic polyarsenic ligand complexes.

Flexible NHC-aryloxido aluminum complex and its zwitterionic imidazolium aluminate precursor in ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone

Anionic donor-functionalized NHC (N-heterocyclic carbene) complexes of Al are rare. We report one such case here, an NHC-aryloxido AlMe2 complex [Al(L)Me2] (2), following a stepwise synthesis from the proligand [HO-4,6-tBu2-C6H2-2-CH2{CH(NCHCHNAr)}]Br [LH2Br; Ar = 2,6-iPr2-C6H3 (Dipp)] and AlMe3via the zwitterionic intermediate [Al(LH)Me2Br] (1). The ligand's flexibility in 2 is evident from the conformational fluxionality revealed by VT-1H NMR spectroscopic analysis. The ∠O-Al-C (ca. 100.5°) bite angle is also wider than the ∠O-Ti-C (ca. 80.6°) as seen in our recently reported Ti complex [Ti(L)(NMe2)2Br]. DFT analysis showed that the CNHC-Al bond is significantly ionic, as is the CNHC-Ti bond. Both 1 and 2 are active in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone (CL). 2, similar to [Ti(L)(NMe2)2Br], exhibits bifunctional MLC-type monomer activation, but only at an elevated temperature. However, the 2/BnOH combination is catalytically active at room temperature, likely through a zwitterionic [Al(LH)Me2(OBn)]. The 1/BnOH combination follows a similar mechanism but surprisingly at a faster rate.

Ring-Opening of 1,3-Imidazole Based Mesoionic Carbenes (iMICs) and Ring-Closing Clicks: Facile Access to iMIC-Compounds

Herein, ring-opening of mesoionic carbenes (iMICs) (iMIC=[ArC{N(Dipp)}2 C(SiMe3 )C:) (Dipp=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 , Ar=Ph, 4-Me2 NC6 H4 or 4-PhC6 H4 ) based on an 1,3-imidazole scaffold to yield N-ethynylformimidamide (eFIM) derivatives as crystalline solids (eFIM={(Dipp)N=C(Ar)N(Dipp)}C≡CSiMe3 ) is reported. eFIMs are thermally stable under inert gas atmosphere and show moderate air stability (t1/2= 3 h for Ar=Ph). eFIMs are excellent surrogates of iMICs, which generally have a limited shelf-life, and readily undergo ring-closing click reactions with a variety of main-group as well as transition metal Lewis acids to form hitherto challenging iMIC-compounds in good to excellent yields. In addition to the relevance of eFIMs in the synthesis of iMIC-compounds, quantification of the stereoelectronic properties of a representative iMIC (Ar=Ph) by experimental and theoretical methods suggests remarkably σ-donor property and steric profile of these new ligand sets.

Synthesis and isolation of a cyclic bis-vinyl germylene via a diazoolefin adduct of germylene dichloride

Since the successful isolation of various stable diazoolefins, an array of complexes containing these promising ligands have been synthesized. We herein report the synthesis, characterization, and structures of neutral group 14 diazoolefin complexes and the subsequent transformation into a new cyclic bis-vinyl germylene.

Boryl-substituted low-valent heavy group 14 compounds

Low valent group 14 compounds exhibit diverse structures and reactivities. The employment of diazaborolyl anions (NHB anions), isoelectronic analogues to N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), in group 14 chemistry leads to the exceptional structures and reactivity. The unique combination of σ-electron donation and pronounced steric hindrance impart distinct structural characteristics to the NHB-substituted low valent group 14 compounds. Notably, the modulation of the HOMO-LUMO gap in these compounds with the diazaborolyl substituents results in novel reaction patterns in the activation of small molecules and inert chemical bonds. This review mainly summarizes the recent advances in NHB-substituted low-valent heavy Group 14 compounds, emphasizing their synthesis, structural characteristics and application to small molecule activation.

Synthesis and Reactivity of an Aluminium N-heterocyclic Aminal

Tethered N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are an emerging class of ligand, as they feature all the desirable aspects of NHCs (ease of synthesis, high tunabilty) but also enable metal-ligand cooperativity when combined with Lewis acidic metal centres due to the donor-acceptor nature of the complexes formed. Herein we report a simple ethoxy-tethered NHC for the stabilisation of Al(III) hydrides, resulting in the unexpected formation of a bicyclic N-heterocyclic aminal (1). Compound 1 behaves as a metal hydride, capable of reducing benzophenone and carbodiimide to yield compounds 2 and 3, respectively. Furthermore, we show that 1 behaves as an efficient catalyst in the dehydrocoupling of amine-boranes due to the hemi-labile nature of the supporting ligand.

Bicyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (BICAAC)-supported phosphinidenes

Herein, the synthesis and characterization of bicyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (BICAAC)-stabilized phosphinidenes (1-4) are reported. Compounds 1-3 were obtained by reacting trihalophosphine [PX3, X = Cl (1), Br (2), I (3)] with BICAAC in THF. A BICAAC-stabilized bis-phosphinidene (4) was obtained from the reduction of compound 2. All four compounds were characterized by X-ray crystallography and heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy. Theoretical calculations indicated the predominant C(carbene)P double bond characteristic in compounds 1-4.
