Recent Advances in the Catalytic Oxidation of Volatile Organic Compounds: A Review Based on Pollutant Sorts and Sources

Effects of surface fluoride modification on TiO2 for the photocatalytic oxidation of toluene

In the present study, we investigated the influence of surface fluorine (F) on TiO2 for the photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) of toluene. TiO2 modified with different F content was prepared and tested. It was found that with the increasing of F content, the toluene conversion rate first increased and then decreased. However, CO2 mineralization efficiency showed the opposite trend. Based on the characterizations, we revealed that F substitutes the surface hydroxyl of TiO2 to form the structure of Ti-F. The presence of the appropriate amount of surface Ti-F on TiO2 greatly enhanced the separation of photogenerated carriers, which facilitated the generation of ·OH and promoted the activity for the PCO of toluene. It was further revealed that the increase of only ·OH promoted the conversion of toluene to ring-containing intermediates, causing the accumulation of intermediates and then conversely inhibited the ·OH generation, which led to the decrease of the CO2 mineralization efficiency. The above results could provide guidance for the rational design of photocatalysts for toluene oxidation.

Construction of hollow sphere MnOX with abundant oxygen vacancy for accelerating VOCs degradation: Investigation through operando spectroscopycombined with on-line mass spectrometry

To clarify the key role of oxygen vacancy defects on enhancing the oxidative activity of the catalysts, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived MnOX catalysts with different morphologies and oxygen vacancy defects were successfully prepared using a facile in-situ self-assembly strategy with different alkali moderators. The obtained morphologies included three-dimensional (3D) triangular cone stacked MnOX hollow sphere (MnOX-H) and 3D nanoparticle stacked MnOX nanosphere (MnOX-N). Compared to MnOX-N, MnOX-H exhibited higher activity for the oxidation of toluene (T90 = 226 °C). This was mainly due to the large number of oxygen vacancy defects and Mn4+ species in the MnOX-H catalyst. In addition, the hollow structure of MnOX-H not only facilitated toluene adsorption and activation of toluene and also provided more active sites for toluene oxidation. Reaction mechanism studies showed that the conversion of toluene to benzoate could be realized over MnOX-H catalyst during toluene adsorption at room temperature. In addition, abundant oxygen vacancy defects can accelerate the activated oxidation of toluene and the formation of oxidation products during toluene oxidation.

Regulating the mobility of lattice oxygen on hollow cobalt-manganese sub-nanospheres for enhanced catalytic oxidation of toluene and o-xylene

Promoting lattice oxygen mobility of Co-based catalysts is crucial to making progress in catalytic oxidation technology. The addition of manganese, a transition metal with similar ionic radius to cobalt and variable valence, was supposed to enhance the mobility of lattice oxygen species of Co-based oxide. A range of hollow CoMnaOx sub-nanosphere catalysts with different Mn/Co ratios was synthesized via a template-sacrificed method, and the effects of different Mn/Co ratios on the structural properties of the catalysts and their catalytic performance for benzene series volatile organic compounds (VOCs) oxidation were investigated. Hollow CoMn2Ox sub-nanosphere exhibited good catalytic activity for oxidation of toluene (T90 = 265 °C) and o-xylene (T90 = 297 °C), as well as excellent recycling ability and water resistance. By adjusting the Mn/Co ratio, metal ions enter into the different tetrahedral or octahedral active sites. Compared with Co3O4, the desorption temperature of surface lattice oxygen on CoMn2Ox decreased by 110 °C. These results demonstrate that the addition of manganese can encourage the electron transfer on CoMnaOx, indicating that the introduction of the appropriate amount of manganese accelerates the activation of gas O2 and mobility of surface lattice oxygen species, thereby expediting the oxidation of benzene series VOCs.

A review of non-thermal plasma -catalysis: The mutual influence and sources of synergetic effect for boosting volatile organic compounds removal

This review is aimed at researchers in air pollution control seeking to understand the latest advancements in volatile organic compound (VOC) removal. Implementing of plasma-catalysis technology for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) led to a significant boost in terms of degradation yield and mineralization rate with low by-product formation. The plasma-catalysis combination can be used in two distinct ways: (I) the catalyst is positioned downstream of the plasma discharge, known as the "post plasma catalysis configuration" (PPC), and (II) the catalyst is located in the plasma zone and exposed directly to the discharge, called "in plasma catalysis configuration" (IPC). Coupling these two technologies, especially for VOCs elimination has attracted the interest of many researchers in recent years. The term "synergy" is widely reported in their works and associated with the positive effect of the plasma catalysis combination. This review paper investigates the state of the art of newly published papers about catalysis, photocatalysis, non-thermal plasma, and their combination for VOC removal application. The focus is on understanding different synergy sources operating mutually between plasma and catalysis discussed and classified into two main parts: the effect of the plasma discharge on the catalyst and the effect of the catalyst on plasma discharge. This approach has the potential for application in air purification systems for industrial processes or indoor environments.

Improving benzene catalytic oxidation on Ag/Co3O4 by regulating the chemical states of Co and Ag

Silver (9 wt.%) was loaded on Co3O4-nanofiber using reduction and impregnation methods, respectively. Due to the stronger electronegativity of silver, the ratios of surface Co3+/Co2+ on Ag/Co3O4 were higher than on Co3O4, which further led to more adsorbed oxygen species as a result of the charge compensation. Moreover, the introducing of silver also obviously improved the reducibility of Co3O4. Hence the Ag/Co3O4 showed better catalytic performance than Co3O4 in benzene oxidation. Compared with the Ag/Co3O4 synthesized via impregnation method, the one prepared using reduction method (named as AgCo-R) exhibited higher contents of surface Co3+ and adsorbed oxygen species, stronger reducibility, as well as more active surface lattice oxygen species. Consequently, AgCo-R showed lowest T90 value of 183°C, admirable catalytic stability, largest normalized reaction rate of 1.36 × 10-4 mol/(h·m2) (150°C), and lowest apparent activation energy (Ea) of 63.2 kJ/mol. The analyzing of in-situ DRIFTS indicated benzene molecules were successively oxidized to phenol, o-benzoquinone, small molecular intermediates, and finally to CO2 and water on the surface of AgCo-R. At last, potential reaction pathways including five detailed steps were proposed.

Catalytic Hydrolysis-Oxidation of Halogenated Methanes over Phase- and Defect-Engineered CePO4: Halogenated Byproduct-Free and Stable Elimination

Catalytic elimination of halogenated volatile organic compound (HVOC) emissions was still a huge challenge through conventional catalytic combustion technology, such as the formation of halogenated byproducts and the destruction of the catalyst structure; hence, more efficient catalysts or a new route was eagerly desired. In this work, crystal phase- and defect-engineered CePO4 was rationally designed and presented abundant acid sites, moderate redox ability, and superior thermal/chemical stability; the halogenated byproduct-free and stable elimination of HVOCs was achieved especially in the presence of H2O. Hexagonal and defective CePO4 with more structural H2O and Brønsted/Lewis acid sites was more reactive and durable compared with monoclinic CePO4. Based on the phase and defect engineering of CePO4, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS), and kinetic isotope effect experiments, a hydrolysis-oxidation pathway characterized by the direct involvement of H2O was proposed. Initiatively, an external electric field (5 mA) significantly accelerated the elimination of HVOCs and even 90% conversion of dichloromethane could be obtained at 170 °C over hexagonal CePO4. The structure-performance-dependent relationships of the engineered CePO4 contributed to the rational design of efficient catalysts for HVOC elimination, and this pioneering work on external electric field-assisted catalytic hydrolysis-oxidation established an innovative HVOC elimination route.

Enhancing bacterial biodegradation of n-hexane by utilizing the adsorption capacity of non-degrading fungi

Biodegradation of hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as n-hexane is limited by their poor accessibility. Constructing fungal-bacterial degradation alliances is an effective approach, but the role of those fungi without the capability to degrade VOCs may have been overlooked. In this study, a non-n-hexane-degrading fungus, Fusarium keratoplasticum FK, was utilized to enhance n-hexane degradation by the bacterium Mycobacterium neworleansense WCJ. It was shown that strain WCJ removed 64.84% of n-hexane (at a concentration of 648.20 mg L-1) over 3 d, and 84.04% after introducing strain FK. Microbial growth kinetic studies revealed that the growth of strain WCJ was also promoted. Through a stepwise adsorption-degradation experiment combined with qPCR technology, it was found that the strain WCJ could utilize the n-hexane pre-adsorbed by strain FK, with an increase in copy number from 108.2662 to 108.7731. Therefore, the non-degrading fungi can improved the accessibility of n-hexane by providing n-hexane adsorbed by the mycelium to the degrading bacteria. In addition, the adsorption tests and characterization of the fungal samples before and after Soxhlet extraction indicated that the adsorption of n-hexane on strain FK conformed to Lagergren's pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich adsorption isotherms, and was correlated with the presence of lipids and nonpolar groups. This study emphasizes the potential role of non-degrading fungi in bioremediation and proposes a viable strategy to enhance the bacterial degradation of hydrophobic VOCs.

Robust Ru/Ce@Co Catalyst with an Optimized Support Structure for Propane Oxidation

Short carbon chain alkanes, as typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs), have molecular structural stability and low molecular polarity, leading to an enormous challenge in the catalytic oxidation of propane. Although Ru-based catalysts exhibit a surprisingly high activity for the catalytic oxidation of propane to CO2 and H2O, active RuOx species are partially oxidized and sintered during the oxidation reaction, leading to a decrease in catalytic activity and significantly inhibiting their application in industrial processes. Herein, the Ru/Ce@Co catalyst is synthesized with a specific structure, in which cerium dioxide is dispersed in a thin layer on the surface of Co3O4, and Ru nanoparticles fall preferentially on cerium oxide with high dispersity. Compared with the Ru/CeO2 and Ru/Co3O4 catalysts, the Ru/Ce@Co catalyst demonstrates excellent catalytic activity and stability for the oxidation of propane, even under severe operating conditions, such as recycling reaction, high space velocity, a certain degree of moisture, and high temperature. Benefiting from this particular structure, the Ru/Ce@Co (5:95) catalyst with more Ce3+ species leads to the Ru species being anchored more firmly on the CeO2 surface with a low-valent state and has a strong potential for adsorption and activation of propane and oxygen, which is beneficial for RuOx species with high activity and stability. This work provides a novel strategy for designing high-efficiency Ru-based catalysts for the catalytic combustion of short carbon alkanes.

Association between volatile organic compounds exposure and periodontitis: A representative cross-sectional study

AIM

Periodontitis is one of the most common oral diseases and a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Environmental pollution is closely associated with the prevalence of periodontitis. However, few studies have focused on the association between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and periodontitis. This cross-sectional study aims to examine whether exposure to VOCs is associated with periodontitis, based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2011-2014).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We analysed data on blood VOC levels, periodontitis and related covariates from 2772 participants of the NHANES. The association between the blood VOCs and periodontitis was analysed using weighted logistic regression analysis, the restricted cubic spline (RCS) model and the weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression model. Interaction tests and mediation analysis were also conducted.

RESULTS

After adjusting for covariates, for each natural constant-fold increase in 1,4-dichlorobenzene, the odds of having periodontitis increased by 16% (odds ratio = 1.16; 95% confidence interval: 1.08-1.24, p < .001). WQS regression model indicated that 1,4-dichlorobenzene contributed the most to the association between VOC co-exposure and periodontitis. Mediation analysis further revealed that total bilirubin levels mediated the association between 1,4-dichlorobenzene and the prevalence of periodontitis, accounting for 4.32%. In addition, the positive association between o-xylene and periodontitis was more pronounced in the <65-year-old group.

CONCLUSIONS

This study has provided relatively little evidence to demonstrate a specific link between VOCs and periodontitis. Nonetheless, exposure to VOCs remains a non-negligible public health concern, and further research is required to investigate the association and potential mechanisms of action between VOCs and periodontitis.

Catalytic Oxidation of Toluene over Pt/CeO2 Catalysts: A Double-Edged Sword Effect of Strong Metal-Support Interaction

Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI), which has drawn widespread attention in heterogeneous catalysis, is thought to significantly affect the catalytic performance for volatile organic chemical (VOC) abatement. In the present study, strong interactions between platinum and ceria are constructed by modulating the oxygen vacancy concentration of CeO2 through a NaBH4 reduction method. For a catalyst with higher content of oxygen vacancy, more electrons would transfer from ceria to Pt, which is attributed to the stronger effect of SMSI. The obtained electron-richer Pt sites exhibit higher ability for toluene activation, contributing to better performance for toluene oxidation. On the other hand, the stronger metal-support interaction would facilitate CeOx species migrating to the Pt nanoparticle surface and forming an encapsulated structure. Smaller Pt dispersion leads to fewer sites for toluene adsorption and activation, which is to the disadvantage of the reaction. Therefore, taking the negative and positive effects together, the Pt/CeO2-0.5 catalyst has the highest catalytic performance for toluene abatement. Our study provides new insights into strong metal-support interaction on toluene oxidation and contributes to designing noble metal catalysts for VOC abatement.

Enhanced Catalytic Oxidation Reactivity over Atomically Dispersed Pt/CeO2 Catalysts by CO Activation

The elevation of the low-temperature oxidation activity for Pt/CeO2 catalysts is challenging to meet the increasingly stringent requirements for effectively eliminating carbon monoxide (CO) from automobile exhaust. Although reducing activation is a facile strategy for boosting reactivity, past research has mainly concentrated on applying H2 as the reductant, ignoring the reduction capabilities of CO itself, a prevalent component of automobile exhaust. Herein, atomically dispersed Pt/CeO2 was fabricated and activated by CO, which could lower the 90% conversion temperature (T90) by 256 °C and achieve a 20-fold higher CO consumption rate at 200 °C. The activated Pt/CeO2 catalysts showed exceptional catalytic oxidation activity and robust hydrothermal stability under the simulated working conditions for gasoline or diesel exhausts. Characterization results illustrated that the CO activation triggered the formation of a large portion of Pt0 terrace sites, acting as inherent active sites for CO oxidation. Besides, CO activation weakened the Pt-O-Ce bond strength to generate a surface oxygen vacancy (Vo). It served as the oxygen reservoir to store the dissociated oxygen and convert it into active dioxygen intermediates. Conversely, H2 activation failed to stimulate Vo, but triggered a deactivating transformation of the Pt nanocluster into inactive PtxOy in the presence of oxygen. The present work offers coherent insight into the upsurging effect of CO activation on Pt/CeO2, aiming to set up a valuable avenue in elevating the efficiency of eliminating CO, C3H6, and NH3 from automobile exhaust.

Research on Oil and Gas Adsorption Optimization Based on CFD Modeling and Process Simulation

In the process of oil extraction and refining, some of the liquid light hydrocarbon components will inevitably evaporate into the atmosphere, causing serious air pollution and safety hazards. This paper is focused on oil and gas adsorption systems to comprehensively optimize key parameters by combining computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling with process simulation, enabling the efficient treatment of hazardous materials. First, a CFD model of the hydrocarbon adsorption process is established to the porous media model by a user-defined function (UDF). Subsequently, the mass transfer process of oil and gas in porous media is successfully simulated to obtain the gas distribution in an industrial fixed bed adsorption tower. The adsorption tank is intensified, and the gas distribution in the tank is improved by optimizing the height-to-diameter ratio of the equipment and the design of the intake distributor. Third, the cyclic two-tank adsorption model of the pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process is established for key parameters optimization. Finally, the operating parameters and conditions of the PSA process are suspected by considering five factors affecting the adsorption efficiency: adsorption time, adsorption pressure, adsorption temperature, feed flow rate, and purge ratio of the washing step.

Oxygen vacancy-mediated Mn2O3 catalyst with high efficiency and stability for toluene oxidation

Oxygen vacancy engineering in transition metal oxides is an effective strategy for improving catalytic performance. Herein, defect-enriched Mn2O3 catalysts were constructed by controlling the calcination temperature. The high content of oxygen vacancies and accompanying Mn4+ ions were generated in Mn2O3 catalysts calcined at low temperature, which could greatly improve the low-temperature reducibility and migration of surface oxygen species. DFT theoretical calculations further confirmed that molecular oxygen and toluene were easily adsorbed over defective α-Mn2O3 (222) facets with an energy of -0.29 and -0.48 eV, respectively, and corresponding OO bond length is stretched to 1.43 Å, resulting in the highly reactive oxygen species. Mn2O3-300 catalyst with abundant oxygen vacancies exhibited the highest specific reaction rate and lowest activation energy. Furthermore, the optimized catalyst possessed the outstanding stability, water tolerance and CO2 yield. In comparison with the fresh Mn2O3-300 catalyst, the physical structure and surface property of the used catalyst remained almost unchanged regardless of whether undergoing the stability test at consecutive catalytic runs as well as high temperature, and water resistance test. In situ DRIFTS spectra further elucidated that introducing the water vapor had little effect on the reaction intermediates, indicating the excellent durability of the defect-enriched catalyst.

New Architecture Based on Metal-Organic Frameworks and Spin Crossover Complexes to Detect Volatile Organic Compounds

We present here the encapsulation of a spin crossover complex C1 [FeII(L)] (L: 4-amino-, 2-(2-pyridinylmethylene)hydrazide) inside MOF-808(Zr), a chemically robust Metal-Organic Framework. The compound C1⊂MOF-808 retains its crystallinity as well as a partial porosity compared to pristine MOF and shows solvatochromism under Volatile Organic compounds (VOCs) sorption associated to a spin state change of the guest complex. More specifically, this compound shows an interesting reversible color change under formaldehyde and formic acid vapor sorption and can therefore be considered as a new kind of optical VOCs chemosensor, opening new doors for developing a broad range of VOCs optical sensors.

Benzene Oxidation in Air by an Amine-Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Carbon- and Nitrogen-Loaded Zirconium Dioxide-Supported Platinum Catalyst

To learn more about the behavior of amine (NH2)-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived noble metal catalysts in the removal of aromatic volatile organic compounds in air, benzene oxidation at low temperatures has been investigated using 0.2-, 0.8-, and 1.5%-platinum (Pt)/Universitetet i Oslo (UiO)-66-NH2. The benzene conversion (XB) of x%-Pt/UiO-66-NH2-R under dry conditions (175 °C) was 23% (x = 0.2%) < 52% (x = 0.8%) < 100% (x = 1.5%): 'R' suffix denotes reduction pretreatment using a hydrogen (10 vol %) and nitrogen mixture at 300 °C for the generation of metallic Pt (Pt0) sites and simultaneous partial MOF decomposition into carbon- and nitrogen-loaded zirconium dioxide. The prominent role of reduction pretreatment was apparent in benzene oxidation as 1.5%-Pt/UiO-66-NH2 did not exhibit catalytic activity below 175 °C (dry condition). The promotional role of moisture in benzene oxidation by 1.5%-Pt/UiO-66-NH2-R was evident with a rise in the steady-state reaction rate (r) at 110 °C (21 kPa molecular oxygen (O2)) from 1.3 × 10-3 to 5.0 × 10-3 μmol g-1 s-1 as the water (H2O) partial pressure increased from 0 to 1.88 kPa. In contrast, the activity was lowered with increasing RH due to catalyst poisoning by excess moisture (r (110 °C) of 6.6 × 10-04 μmol g-1 s-1 at 2.83 kPa H2O (21 kPa O2)). Kinetic modeling suggests that XB proceeds through the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism on the Pt/UiO-66-NH2-R surface (dissociative O2 chemisorption and the involvement of two oxygen species in benzene oxidation). According to the density functional theory simulation, the carbon and nitrogen impurities are to make the first XB step (i.e., hydrogen migration from the benzene molecule to the substrate) energetically favorable. The second hydrogen atom from the benzene molecule is also extracted effectively, while the oxygen derived from O2 facilitates further XB. The Pt0 sites dissociate the O2 and H2O molecules, while the product of the latter, i.e., free hydrogen and hydroxyl, makes the subsequent XB steps energetically favorable.

Synergistic Catalytic Removal of NOx and n-Butylamine via Spatially Separated Cooperative Sites

Synergistic control of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and nitrogen-containing volatile organic compounds (NVOCs) from industrial furnaces is necessary. Generally, the elimination of n-butylamine (n-B), a typical pollutant of NVOCs, requires a catalyst with sufficient redox ability. This process induces the production of nitrogen-containing byproducts (NO, NO2, N2O), leading to lower N2 selectivity of NH3 selective catalytic reduction of NOx (NH3-SCR). Here, synergistic catalytic removal of NOx and n-B via spatially separated cooperative sites was originally demonstrated. Specifically, titania nanotubes supported CuOx-CeO2 (CuCe-TiO2 NTs) catalysts with spatially separated cooperative sites were creatively developed, which showed a broader active temperature window from 180 to 340 °C, with over 90% NOx conversion, 85% n-B conversion, and 90% N2 selectivity. A synergistic effect of the Cu and Ce sites was found. The catalytic oxidation of n-B mainly occurred at the Cu sites inside the tube, which ensured the regular occurrence of the NH3-SCR reaction on the outer Ce sites under the matching temperature window. In addition, the n-B oxidation would produce abundant intermediate NH2*, which could act as an extra reductant to promote NH3-SCR. Meanwhile, NH3-SCR could simultaneously remove the possible NOx byproducts of n-B decomposition. This novel strategy of constructing cooperative sites provides a distinct pathway for promoting the synergistic removal of n-B and NOx.

Constructing Pd@Layered-CoOx/MFI Bifunctional Catalyst for Efficient Ethyl Acetate Oxidation: Boosted C═O Activation and *O Species Transformation

Oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs), emitted in large quantities by the chemical industry, are a major contributor to the formation of ozone and subsequent particulate matter. For the efficient catalytic oxidation of OVOCs, the challenges of molecular activation and intermediate inhibition remain. The construction of bifunctional active sites with specific structures offers a promising way to overcome these problems. Here, the Pd@Layered-CoOx/MFI bifunctional catalyst with core-shell active sites was rationally fabricated though a two-step ligand pyrolysis method, which exhibits a superb oxidation efficiency toward ethyl acetate (EA). Over this, 13.4% of EA (1000 ppm) can be oxidized at just 140 °C with a reaction rate of 13.85 mmol·gPd-1·s-1, around 176.7 times higher than that of the conventional Pd-CoOx/MFI catalyst. The electronic coupling of the Pd-Co pair promotes the electron back-donation from Pd nanoparticles to the layered CoOx shell and facilitates the formation of Pd2+ species, which greatly enhances the adsorption and activation of the electron-rich C═O bond of the EA molecules. In addition, the synergy of these core-shell Pd@Layered-CoOx sites accelerates the activation and transformation of *O species, which inhibit the formation of acetaldehyde and ethanol byproducts, ensuring the rapid total oxidation of EA molecules via the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. This work established a solid foundation for exploring robust bifunctional catalysts for deep OVOC purification.

Mn and Co decorated biomorphic ceria fiber catalysts for soot and benzene total oxidation

Mn or Co supported CeO2 fiber catalysts were synthesized following a biotemplating route and evaluated in soot combustion and benzene total oxidation. The catalysts were characterized by SEM, EDX, N2 physisorption, FTIR-ATR, XRD, RAMAN and XPS. SEM results confirmed that the "twisted ribbon" morphology of the biotemplate was mostly maintained. XRD and Raman showed that Mn and Co cations partially insert into ceria lattice and also segregate at the surface of the fibers. XPS allowed to determine that both set of catalysts exhibit Ce3+ and Ce4+ species, in addition to adsorbed and lattice oxygen. Also, the average oxidation state (AOS) of surface Mn could be calculated. Compared to bare Fib Ce, the performances for both reactions were improved for the supported catalysts, except from the catalyst with lowest Mn content for soot combustion. The catalytic activity was discussed in terms of the physicochemical features of the supported catalysts.

Amidation-Reaction Strategy Constructs Versatile Mixed Matrix Composite Membranes towards Efficient Volatile Organic Compounds Adsorption and CO2 Separation

Mixed matrix composite membranes (MMCMs) have shown advantages in reducing VOCs and CO2 emissions. Suitable composite layer, substrate, and good compatibility between the filler and the matrix in the composite layer are critical issues in designing MMCMs. This work develops a high-performance UiO-66-NA@PDMS/MCE for VOCs adsorption and CO2 permea-selectivity, based on a simple and facile fabrication of composite layer using amidation-reaction approach on the substrate. The composite layer shows a continuous morphological appearance without interface voids. This outstanding compatibility interaction between UiO-66-NH2 and PDMS is confirmed by molecular simulations. The Si─O functional group and UiO-66-NH2 in the layer leads to improved VOCs adsorption via active sites, skeleton interaction, electrostatic interaction, and van der Waals force. The layer and ─CONH─ also facilitate CO2 transport. The MMCMs show strong four VOCs adsorption and high CO2 permeance of 276.5 GPU with a selectivity of 36.2. The existence of VOCs in UiO-66-NA@PDMS/MCE increases the polarity and fine-tunes the pore size of UiO-66-NH2, improving the affinity towards CO2 and thus promoting the permea-selectivity for CO2, which is further verified by GCMC and EMD methods. This work is expected to offer a facile composite layer manufacturing method for MMCMs with high VOC adsorption and CO2 permea-selectivity.

Management of methyl mercaptan contained in waste gases - an overview

Methyl mercaptan is a typical volatile organosulfur pollutant contained in many gases emitted by urban waste treatment, various industries, natural gas handling, refining processes, and energy production. This work is a comprehensive overview of the scientific and practical aspects related to the management of methyl mercaptan pollution. The main techniques, including absorption, adsorption, oxidation, and biological treatments, are examined in detail. For each method, its capability as well as the technical advantages and drawbacks have been highlighted. The emerging methods developed for the removal of methyl mercaptan from natural gas are also reviewed. These methods are based on the catalytic conversion of CH3SH to hydrocarbons and H2S.

Modulating the Microstructure and Surface Acidity of MnO2 by Doping-Induced Phase Transition for Simultaneous Removal of Toluene and NOx at Low Temperature

It is a great challenge to remove VOCs and NOx simultaneously from flue gas in nonelectric industries. This study focuses on the construction of Fe-MnO2 catalysts that perform well in the simultaneous removal of toluene and NOx at low temperatures. Utilizing the Fe-induced phase transition of MnO2, Fe-MnO2-F&R catalysts with a composite morphology of nanoflowers and nanorods were successfully prepared that provided an abundant microporous structure to facilitate the diffusion of molecules of different sizes. Through in-depth investigation of the active sites and reaction mechanism, we discovered that Fe-induced phase transition could modulate the surface acidity of Fe-MnO2-F&R. The higher concentration of surface Mn4+ provided numerous Brønsted acid sites, which effectively promoted the activation of toluene to reactive intermediates, such as benzyl alcohol/benzoate/maleic acid. Simultaneously, Fe provided a large number of Lewis acid sites that anchor and activate NH3 species, thereby inhibiting NH3 nonselective oxidation. Furthermore, additional Brønsted acid sites were generated during the simultaneous reaction process, enhancing toluene activation. Consequently, the simultaneous removal of toluene and NOx was achieved through regulation of the physical structure and the concentration of acidic sites. The present work provides new insights into the rational design of bifunctional catalysts for the synergistic control of VOCs and NOx emissions.

The exposure to volatile organic compounds associate positively with overactive bladder risk in U.S. adults: a cross-sectional study of 2007-2020 NHANES

Objective

The aim of this study was to comprehensively investigate the potential relationship between blood volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and overactive bladder (OAB) risk.

Methods

A total of 11,183 participants from the 2007-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included in this cross-sectional study. We used multivariate logistic regression models to investigate the relationship between nine blood VOCs and OAB risk. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was used to investigate the dose-response relationship between blood VOCs and OAB. In addition, the overall association of blood VOCs with OAB risk was assessed by weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression model. Finally, we conducted subgroup analyses to explore the findings in different high-risk populations.

Results

After adjusting for potential confounders, logistic regression analysis revealed that blood 2,5-dimethylfuran (aOR = 2.940, 95% CI: 1.096-7.890, P = 0.032), benzene (aOR = 1.460, 95% CI: 1.044-2.043, P = 0.027) and furan (aOR = 9.426, 95% CI: 1.421-62.500, P = 0.020) were positively independent associated with the risk of OAB. And dose-response risk curves indicated that 2,5-dimethylfuran, benzene and furan in the blood were linearly positive associated with OAB risk. WQS regression analysis showed that exposure to mixed blood VOCs increased the risk of OAB (OR = 1.29, 95% CI: 1.11-1.49), with furans having the greatest weight. In subgroup analyses, we found that OAB was more susceptible to blood VOCs in young and middle-aged, male, non-hypertensive, and alcohol-drinking populations.

Conclusions

The results of this study indicate that high exposure to VOCs is independently and positively associated with OAB risk in U.S. adults, particularly 2,5-dimethylfuran, benzene, and furan. In addition, age, gender, hypertension and alcohol consumption may influence the association. Our study provided novel epidemiologic evidence to explore the potential role of environmental pollutants in OAB.

Engineering Co3O4@3DOM LaCoO3 multistage-pore nanoreactor with superior SO2 resistance for toluene catalytic combustion

Sulfur dioxide poisoning is a significant factor in catalyst deactivation during the catalytic combustion of volatile organic compounds. In this study, we prepared the LaCoO3 and Co3O4 composite catalysts using both the Ship-in-Bottle and Building-Bottle-Around-Ship approaches. Three-dimensionally ordered macropores (3DOM LaCoO3) were utilized as nanoreactors to protect the active sites during the catalytic combustion of toluene, preventing SO2 poisoning. Additionally, we grew ZIF-67 confined in the nanoreactor to create a multistage-pore structure. The Co3O4@3DOM LaCoO3 catalysts exhibited excellent activity in the complete catalytic oxidation of toluene. Various characterization studies confirmed the presence of a significant number of Co3+ species and an abundance of surface weak acid sites in the Co3O4@3DOM LaCoO3 catalysts, which synergistically enhanced the conversion of VOCs at low temperatures. Notably, the multistage pore structure provided a favorable reaction environment, accelerating the adsorption and diffusion of toluene and intermediates, resulting in excellent sulfur resistance of the catalysts. Moreover, XPS analysis confirmed a strong interaction between Co3O4 and LaCoO3, promoting rapid electron transfer and increasing the activation of O2-. In situ DRIFTS experiments verified that toluene mainly follows the MvK mechanism over Co3O4@3DOM LaCoO3 catalysts, indicating the following reaction pathway: toluene adsorption → benzyl alcohol → benzaldehyde → benzoate → anhydride → CO2 and H2O.

Acid etching post-treatment enhanced fungal sterilization performance of copper-manganese-cerium oxide in liquid and aerosol: Materials and molecular biological mechanisms

Bioaerosol is one of the main ways to spread respiratory infectious diseases. In order to further improve the sterilization efficiency of copper-manganese-cerium oxide (CuMnCeOx), the post-treatment method based on acid etching was adopted. The results showed that sterilization efficiency of the treated CuMnCeOx could reach 99% in aerosol with space velocity of 1400 h-1. L(+)-ascorbic acid successfully promoted the formation of Cu+, oxygen vacancies and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the surface of the treated CuMnCeOx. During sterilization in liquid system, the transcriptome identified 316 differentially expressed genes, including 270 up-regulated genes and 46 down-regulated genes. Differentially expressed genes were significantly enriched in cell wall (GO:0005618) and external encapsulating structure (GO:0030312). Up-regulated genes were shown in regulation of reactive oxygen species biosynthetic processes (GO:1903409, GO:1903426, GO:1903428) and positive regulation all of reactive oxygen species metabolic process (GO:2000379), indicating that ROS induced cell death by destroying cell wall.

Weakening Mn-O Bond Strength in Mn-Based Perovskite Catalysts to Enhance Propane Catalytic Combustion

Exploring highly efficient and robust non-noble metal catalysts for VOC abatement is crucial but challenging. Mn-based perovskites are a class of redox catalysts with good thermal stability, but their activity in the catalytic combustion of light alkanes is insufficient. In this work, we modulated the Mn-O bond strength in a Mn-based perovskite via defect engineering, over which the catalytic activity of propane combustion was significantly enhanced. It demonstrates that the oxygen vacancy concentration and the Mn-O bond strength can be efficiently modulated by finely tuning the Ni content in SmNixMn1-xO3 perovskite catalysts (SNxM1-x), which in turn can enhance the redox ability and generate more active oxygen species. The SN0.10M0.90 catalyst with the lowest Mn-O bond strength exhibits the lowest apparent activation energy, over which the propane conversion rate increases by 3.6 times compared to that on the SmMnO3 perovskite catalyst (SM). In addition, a SN0.10M0.90/cordierite monolithic catalyst can also exhibit a remarkable catalytic performance and deliver excellent long-term durability (1000 h), indicating broad prospects in industrial applications. Moreover, the promotional effect of Ni substitution was further unveiled by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work brings a favorable guidance for the exploration of highly efficient perovskite catalysts for light alkane elimination.

Construction of 3D-graphene/NH2-MIL-125 nanohybrids via amino-ionic liquid dual-mode bonding for advanced acetaldehyde photodegradation under high humidity

The development of metal organic framework (MOF)-based π-π conjugated structures capable of effectively transforming H2O from humid air to •OH radicals for VOCs photodegradation is a significant but difficult task. Herein, an amino-ionic liquid (NH2-IL) based dual-mode bridging strategy was proposed to connect 3D-graphene with NH2-MIL-125 forming IL-3DGr/NM(Ti) nanohybrids for advanced acetaldehyde photodegradation. The rational integration of these components was responsible for: (1) maintaining π-π conjugated electron transport system; (2) generating abundant coordinatively unsaturated sites and oxygen vacancies; (3) increasing surface area of the nanohybrids. With these attributes, IL-3DGr/NM(Ti) demonstrated enhanced charge separation and transportation electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS): 7-times), acetaldehyde adsorption (22 %), light absorption (bandgap: 1.51 eV). The rapid H2O adsorption and photoconversion to •OH radicals by IL-3DGr/NM(Ti) enabled it to demonstrate superior CH3CHO photodegradation rate under high humidity, surpassing many state-of-the-art photocatalysts by 9 to 187 times under static air conditions and with nearly similar catalyst dosages* (photocatalyst weight and initial acetaldehyde concentration (mg ppm-1) ratio). Interestingly, the IL-3DGr/NM(Ti) photocatalytic activity was enhanced by increasing RH% up-to 80 %. Besides, the nanohybrids demonstrated tremendous stability, with only a 3.9 % decline observed after 5 consecutive-cycles. This strategy provides new prospects to improve the compatibility of graphene/MOF materials for futuristic photoelectrical applications under high humidity.

Modulating the Electronic Structures of Pt on Pt/TiO2 Catalyst for Boosting Toluene Oxidation

Surface hydroxyl groups commonly exist on the catalyst and present a significant role in the catalytic reaction. Considering the lack of systematical researches on the effect of the surface hydroxyl group on reactant molecule activation, the PtOx/TiO2 and PtOx-y(OH)y/TiO2 catalysts were constructed and studied for a comprehensive understanding of the roles of the surface hydroxyl group in the oxidation of volatiles organic compounds. The PtOx/TiO2 formed by a simple treatment with nitric acid presented greatly enhanced activity for toluene oxidation in which the turnover frequency of toluene oxidation on PtOx/TiO2 was around 14 times as high as that on PtOx-y(OH)y/TiO2. Experimental and theoretical results indicated that adsorption/activation of toluene and reactivity of oxygen atom on the catalyst determined the toluene oxidation on the catalyst. The removal of surface hydroxyl groups on PtOx promoted strong electronic coupling of the Pt 5d orbital in PtOx and C 2p orbital in toluene, facilitating the electron transfers from toluene to PtOx and subsequently the adsorption/activation of toluene. Additionally, the weak Pt-O bond promoted the activation of surface lattice oxygen, accelerating the deep oxidation of activated toluene. This study clarifies the inhibiting effect of surface hydroxyl groups on PtOx in toluene oxidation, providing a further understanding of hydrocarbon oxidation.

Highly Dispersed Ni Atoms and O3 Promote Room-Temperature Catalytic Oxidation

Transition metal oxides are promising catalysts for catalytic oxidation reactions but are hampered by low room-temperature activities. Such low activities are normally caused by sparse reactive sites and insufficient capacity for molecular oxygen (O2) activation. Here, we present a dual-stimulation strategy to tackle these two issues. Specifically, we import highly dispersed nickel (Ni) atoms onto MnO2 to enrich its oxygen vacancies (reactive sites). Then, we use molecular ozone (O3) with a lower activation energy as an oxidant instead of molecular O2. With such dual stimulations, the constructed O3-Ni/MnO2 catalytic system shows boosted room-temperature activity for toluene oxidation with a toluene conversion of up to 98%, compared with the O3-MnO2 (Ni-free) system with only 50% conversion and the inactive O2-Ni/MnO2 (O3-free) system. This leap realizes efficient room-temperature catalytic oxidation of transition metal oxides, which is constantly pursued but has always been difficult to truly achieve.

A systematic DFT study of structure and electronic properties of titanium dioxide

DFT functionals are of paramount importance for an accurate electronic and structural description of transition metal systems. In this work, a systematic analysis using some well-known and commonly used DFT functionals is performed. A comparison of the structural and energetic parameters calculated with the available experimental data is made in order to find the adequate functional for an accurate description of the TiO2 bulk and surface of both anatase and rutile structures. In the absence of experimental data on the surface energy, the theoretical predictions obtained using the high-accuracy HSE06 functional were used as a reference to compare against the surface energy values calculated with the other DFT functionals. A clear improvement in the electronic description of both anatase and rutile was observed by introducing the Hubbard U correction term to PBE, PW91, and OptPBE functionals. The OptPBE-U4 functional was found to offer a good compromise between accurately describing the structural and electronic properties of titania.

Recent advances in cotton fabric-based photocatalytic composites for the degradation of organic contaminants

Cotton is one of the oldest and most widely used natural fibers in the world. It enables a wide range of applications due to its excellent moisture absorption, thermal insulation, heat resistance, and durability. Benefiting from current developments in textile technology and materials science, people are constantly seeking more comfortable, more beautiful and more versatile cotton fabrics. As the second skin of body, clothing not only provides the basic needs of wear but also increases the protection of body against different environmental stimuli. In this article, a comprehensive review is proposed regarding research activities of systematically summarise the development and research of cotton fabric-based photocatalytic composites for the degradation of organic contaminants in the area of self-cleaning, degradation of gaseous contaminants, pathogenic bacteria or viruses, and chemical warfare agents. Specifically, we begin with a brief exposition of the background and significance of cotton fabric-based photocatalytic composites. Next, a systematical review on cotton fabric-based photocatalytic composites is provided according to their mechanisms and advanced applications. Finally, a simple summary and analysis concludes the current limitations and future directions in these composites for the degradation of organic contaminants.

Redox-induced controllable engineering of MnO2-MnxCo3-xO4 interface to boost catalytic oxidation of ethane

Multicomponent oxides are intriguing materials in heterogeneous catalysis, and the interface between various components often plays an essential role in oxidations. However, the underlying principles of how the hetero-interface affects the catalytic process remain largely unexplored. Here we report a unique structure design of MnCoOx catalysts by chemical reduction, specifically for ethane oxidation. Part of the Mn ions incorporates with Co oxides to form spinel MnxCo3-xO4, while the rests stay as MnO2 domains to create the MnO2-MnxCo3-xO4 interface. MnCoOx with Mn/Co ratio of 0.5 exhibits an excellent activity and stability up to 1000 h under humid conditions. The synergistic effects between MnO2 and MnxCo3-xO4 are elucidated, in which the C2H6 tends to be adsorbed on the interfacial Co sites and subsequently break the C-H bonds on the reactive lattice O of MnO2 layer. Findings from this study provide valuable insights for the rational design of efficient catalysts for alkane combustion.

A Low-Noble-Metal Ru@CoMn2O4 Spinel Catalyst for the Efficient Oxidation of Propane

Noble metals have become a research hotspot for the oxidation of light alkanes due to their low ignition temperature and easy activation of C-H; however, sintering and a high price limit their industrial applications. The preparation of effective and low-noble-metal catalysts still presents profound challenges. Herein, we describe how a Ru@CoMn2O4 spinel catalyst was synthesized via Ru in situ doping to promote the activity of propane oxidation. Ru@CoMn2O4 exhibited much higher catalytic activity than CoMn2O4, achieving 90% propane conversion at 217 °C. H2-TPR, O2-TPD, and XPS were used to evaluate the catalyst adsorption/lattice oxygen activity and the adsorption and catalytic oxidation capacity of propane. It could be concluded that Ru promoted synergistic interactions between cobalt and manganese, leading to electron transfer from the highly electronegative Ru to Co2+ and Mn3+. Compared with CoMn2O4, 0.1% Ru@CoMn2O4, with a higher quantity of lattice oxygen and oxygen mobility, possessed a stronger capability of reducibility, which was the main reason for the significant increase in the activity of Ru@CoMn2O4. In addition, intermediates of the reaction between adsorbed propane and lattice oxygen on the catalyst were monitored by in situ DRIFTS. This work highlights a new strategy for the design of a low-noble-metal catalyst for the efficient oxidation of propane.

Metal-Organic Framework Based Sensors for Benzene Vapor

Sensing of benzene vapor is a hot spot due to the volatile drastic carcinogen even at trace concentration. However, achieving convenient and rapid detection is still a challenge. As a sort of functional porous material, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been developed as detection sensors by adsorbing benzene vapor and converting it into other signals (fluorescence intensity/wavelength, chemiresistive, weight or color, etc.). Supramolecular interaction between benzene molecules and the host framework, aperture size/shape and structural flexibility are influential factors in the performance of MOF-based sensors. Therefore, enhancing the host-guest interactions between the host framework and benzene molecules, or regulating the diffusion rate of benzene molecules by changing the aperture size/shape and flexibility of the host framework to enhance the detection signal are effective strategies for constructing MOF-based sensors. This concept highlights several types of MOF-based sensors for the detection of benzene vapor.

Potential Strategy to Control the Organic Components of Condensable Particulate Matter: A Critical Review

More and more attention has been paid to condensable particulate matter (CPM) since its emissions have surpassed that of filterable particulate matter (FPM) with the large-scale application of ultralow-emission reform. CPM is a gaseous material in the flue stack but instantly turns into particles after leaving the stack. It is composed of inorganic and organic components. Organic components are an important part of CPM, and they are an irritant, teratogenic, and carcinogenic, which triggers photochemical smog, urban haze, and acid deposition. CPM organic components can aggravate air pollution and climate change; therefore, consideration should be given to them. Based on existing methods for removing atmospheric organic pollutants and combined with the characteristics of CPM organic components, we provide a critical overview from the aspects of (i) fundamental cognition of CPM, (ii) common methods to control CPM organic components, and (iii) catalytic oxidation of CPM organic components. As one of the most encouraging methods, catalytic oxidation is discussed in detail, especially in combination with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology, to meet the growing demands for multipollutant control (MPC). We believe that this review is inspiring for a fuller understanding and deeper exploration of promising approaches to control CPM organic components.

Unveiling the Function of Oxygen Vacancy on Facet-Dependent CeO2 for the Catalytic Destruction of Monochloromethane: Guidance for Industrial Catalyst Design

Secondary pollution remains a critical challenge for the catalytic destruction of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs). By employing experimental studies and theoretical calculations, we provide valuable insights into the catalytic behaviors exhibited by ceria rods, cubes, and octahedra for monochloromethane (MCM) destruction, shedding light on the elementary reactions over facet-dependent CeO2. Our findings demonstrate that CeO2 nanorods with the (110) facet exhibit the best performance in MCM destruction, and the role of vacancies is mainly to form a longer distance (4.63 Å) of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) compared to the stoichiometric surface, thereby enhancing the activation of MCM molecules. Subsequent molecular orbital analysis showed that the adsorption of MCM mainly transferred electrons from the 3σ and 4π* orbitals to the Ce 4f orbitals, and the activation was mainly caused by weakening of the 3σ bonding orbitals. Furthermore, isotopic experiments and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the hydrogen chloride generated is mainly derived from methyl in MCM rather than from water, and the primary function of water is to form excess saturated H on the surface, facilitating the desorption of generated hydrogen chloride.

Changes of Nitrate Activity and Byproduct Distribution Characteristics for Synergistic NOx and Dioxin Abatement over V2O5/AC Catalyst

The simultaneous removal of NOx and dioxins has been considered an economical and effective technology of controlling multipollutant flue gas in the context of "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality". However, this technology has not yet been implemented in practical situations, because the interactive relationship between the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reaction and dioxin catalytic oxidation lacks a deep understanding, especially on a carbon-based catalyst. In this research, the influence of NO and NH3 on the oxidation characteristics and byproducts distribution of dibenzofuran (DBF) was studied on V2O5/AC catalyst. Results indicated that NH3 has a stronger inhibition effect for DBF catalytic oxidation than NO due to obvious competitive adsorption between NH3 and DBF on the V2O5/AC catalyst. In addition, although both NO and NH3 inhibit the complete degradation of DBF, their effects on the byproduct distribution are not consistent. NO primarily affects the level of oxygen-containing byproducts, while NH3 primarily affects the level of alkane byproducts. Furthermore, the SCR reaction activity demonstrated a reduction when DBF was present. The occupation of V2O5 sites by DBF and its oxidizing intermediates has hindered the production of monodentate nitrate and the reactivity of bridged nitrate, resulting in a decrease in SCR activity via the L-H mechanism. This work aims to provide theoretical guidance for simultaneous removal of NOx and dioxins in industrial fumes.

Direct mitigation of secondary organic aerosol particulate pollutants by multiphase photocatalysis

Particulate matter represents one of the most severe air pollutants globally. Organic aerosol (OA) comprises 30-70 % of submicron particle mass in urban areas. An effective way to mitigate OA particulate pollutants is to reduce the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Here, we studied the effect of titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalytic seeds on the formation and mitigation of SOA particles from α-pinene or toluene oxidation in chamber. For the first time, we discovered that under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, the presence of TiO2 directly removed internally mixed α-pinene SOA mass by 53.7 % within 200 mins, and also directly removed SOA matter in an externally mixed state that is not in direct contact with TiO2 surface: the mass of externally mixed α-pinene SOA was reduced by 21.9 % within 81 mins, and the toluene SOA mass was reduced by 46.6 % in 145mins. In addition, the presence of TiO2 effectively inhibited the formation of SOA particles with a SOA mass yield of zero. This study brings up an innovative concept for air pollution control - the direct photocatalytic degradation of OA with aid of TiO2-based photocatalysts. Our novel findings will potentially bring practical applications in air pollution abatement and regional, even global aerosol-climate interactions.

Mn-Based Mullites for Environmental and Energy Applications

Mn-based mullite oxides AMn2O5 (A = lanthanide, Y, Bi) is a novel type of ternary catalyst in terms of their electronic and geometric structures. The coexistence of pyramid Mn3+-O and octahedral Mn4+-O makes the d-orbital selectively active toward various catalytic reactions. The alternative edge- and corner-sharing stacking configuration constructs the confined active sites and abundant active oxygen species. As a result, they tend to show superior catalytic behaviors and thus gain great attention in environmental treatment and energy conversion and storage. In environmental applications, Mn-based mullites have been demonstrated to be highly active toward low-temperature oxidization of CO, NO, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), etc. Recent research further shows that mullites decompose O3 and ozonize VOCs from -20 °C to room temperature. Moreover, mullites enhance oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) and sulfur reduction reactions (SRR), critical kinetic steps in air-battery and Li-S batteries, respectively. Their distinctive structures also facilitate applications in gas-sensitive sensing, ionic conduction, high mobility dielectrics, oxygen storage, piezoelectricity, dehydration, H2O2 decomposition, and beyond. A comprehensive review from basic physicochemical properties to application certainly not only gains a full picture of mullite oxides but also provides new insights into designing heterogeneous catalysts.

High-Performance Ir1/CeO2 Single-Atom Catalyst for the Oxidation of Toluene

The elimination of toluene is an obligatory target with increasing VOC emission in recent years. This study successfully prepared a single-atom Ir catalyst (Ir1/CeO2) by a simple incipient wetness impregnation method, confirmed by in situ CO DRIFTS and AC-HAADF-STEM. Compared to the cluster Ir catalyst (Ir/CeO2-C), Ir1/CeO2 exhibited excellent catalytic performance, stability, and water resistance for the oxidation of toluene. By Raman, H2-TPR, O2-TPD, and XPS experiments, abundant oxygen defects and a unique Ir3+-Ov-Ce3+ structure were formed for the Ir1/CeO2 sample because it had a lower oxygen vacancy formation energy. Furthermore, the DFT results revealed that the Ir1/CeO2 sample had a lower ring-opening energy barrier and adsorption energy of the ring-opening products, which was the rate-determining step for the oxidation of toluene. This work provides instructive insights into the construction of Ir/CeO2 catalysts for the highly efficient removal of VOCs.

Tuning the crystallinity of the MnOx catalysts to promote toluene catalytic oxidation

In this paper, the MnOx catalysts with excellent toluene oxidation performance were prepared by a simple precipitation method. The physicochemical properties of the prepared MnOx catalysts were investigated by XRD, BET, H2-TPR, O2-TPD and XPS. The obtained results revealed that the crystallinity of the prepared MnOx catalysts could be effectively regulated by changing the (NH4)2CO3/Mn(NO3)2 molar ratio, and thus affecting the oxygen vacancy concentration of the prepared MnOx catalysts. The prepared MnOx-4 catalyst with the (NH4)2CO3/Mn(NO3)2 molar ratio of 4.0 had the poor crystallinity and small grain size, which effectively promoted the oxygen defects in the MnOx catalyst to be formed. At the same time, the MnOx-4 catalyst had a large specific surface area, the highest low temperature reducibility and the largest number of oxygen vacancies and surface adsorbed oxygen species, which allowed more surface oxygen species to participate in the redox reaction, and promoted the toluene deep oxidation. Therefore, when the (NH4)2CO3/Mn(NO3)2 molar ratio was 4.0, the prepared MnOx-4 catalyst exhibited an excellent toluene catalytic oxidation performance and robust catalytic stability. What's more, the toluene oxidation conversion on the MnOx-4 catalyst reached 99% at 230°C, and the MnOx-4 catalyst showed excellent resistance to water vapour.

A Holographic-Type Model in the Description of Polymer-Drug Delivery Processes

A unitary model of drug release dynamics is proposed, assuming that the polymer-drug system can be assimilated into a multifractal mathematical object. Then, we made a description of drug release dynamics that implies, via Scale Relativity Theory, the functionality of continuous and undifferentiable curves (fractal or multifractal curves), possibly leading to holographic-like behaviors. At such a conjuncture, the Schrödinger and Madelung multifractal scenarios become compatible: in the Schrödinger multifractal scenario, various modes of drug release can be "mimicked" (via period doubling, damped oscillations, modulated and "chaotic" regimes), while the Madelung multifractal scenario involves multifractal diffusion laws (Fickian and non-Fickian diffusions). In conclusion, we propose a unitary model for describing release dynamics in polymer-drug systems. In the model proposed, the polymer-drug dynamics can be described by employing the Scale Relativity Theory in the monofractal case or also in the multifractal one.

A theoretical study on toluene oxidization by OH radical

Toluene, a prominent member of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), exerts a substantial adverse influence on both human life and the environment. In the context of advanced oxidation processes, the ·OH radical emerges as a highly efficient oxidant, pivotal in the elimination of VOCs. This study employs computational quantum chemistry methods (G4MP2//B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p)) to systematically investigate the degradation of toluene by ·OH radicals in an implicit solvent model, and validates the rationale of choosing a single-reference method using T1 diagnostics. Our results suggest three possible reaction mechanisms for the oxidation of toluene by ·OH: firstly, the phenyl ring undergoes a hydrogen abstraction reaction followed by direct combination with ·OH to form cresol; secondly, ·OH directly adds to the phenyl ring, leading to ring opening; thirdly, oxidation of sidechain to benzoic acid followed by further addition and ring opening. The last two oxidation pathways involve the ring opening of toluene via the addition of ·OH, significantly facilitating the process. Therefore, both pathways are considered feasible for the degradation of toluene. Subsequently, the UV-H2O2 system was designed to induce the formation of ·OH for toluene degradation and to identify the optimal reaction conditions. It was demonstrated that ·OH and 1O2 are the primary active species for degrading toluene, with their contribution ranking as ·OH > 1O2. The intermediates in the mixture solution after reactions were characterized using GC-MS, demonstrating the validity of theoretical predictions. A comparative study of the toluene consumption rate revealed an experimental comprehensive activation energy of 10.33 kJ/mol, which is consistent with the preliminary activation energies obtained via theoretical analysis of these three mechanisms (0.56 kJ/mol to 13.66 kJ/mol), indicating that this theoretical method can provide a theoretical basis for experimental studies on the oxidation of toluene by ·OH.

Estimate of the C-Cl photoionization cross section and absolute photoionization cross sections of chlorinated organic compounds

Chlorinated organic compounds are prominently used for industrial production, but their vapors and emission byproducts can cause detrimental effects to human health and the environment. To accurately quantify organochlorine compounds, the absolute photoionization cross section of tetrachloroethylene, chlorobenzene, 1,2-dichlorobenzene, and chloroacetone are measured using multiplexed synchrotron photoionization mass spectrometry at the Advanced Light Source at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. These measurements allow for the estimation of the C-Cl photoionization cross section, increasing quantification accuracy of chlorinated emissions for kinetic modeling and pollutant mitigation. CBS-QB3 calculations of adiabatic ionization energies and thermochemical appearance energies are also presented and agree well with the experimental results.

Catalytic Oxidation of Benzene over Atomic Active Site AgNi/BCN Catalysts at Room Temperature

Benzene is the typical volatile organic compound (VOC) of indoor and outdoor air pollution, which harms human health and the environment. Due to the stability of their aromatic structure, the catalytic oxidation of benzene rings in an environment without an external energy input is difficult. In this study, the efficient degradation of benzene at room temperature was achieved by constructing Ag and Ni bimetallic active site catalysts (AgNi/BCN) supported on boron-carbon-nitrogen aerogel. The atomic-scale Ag and Ni are uniformly dispersed on the catalyst surface and form Ag/Ni-C/N bonds with C and N, which were conducive to the catalytic oxidation of benzene at room temperature. Further catalytic reaction mechanisms indicate that benzene reacted with ·OH to produce R·, which reacted with O2 to regenerate ·OH. Under the strong oxidation of ·OH, benzene was oxidized to form alcohols, carboxylic acids, and eventually CO2 and H2O. This study not only significantly reduces the energy consumption of VOC catalytic oxidation, but also improves the safety of VOC treatment, providing new ideas for the low energy consumption and green development of VOC treatment.

Fenton-mediated thermocatalytic conversion of CO2 to acetic acid by industrial waste-derived magnetite nanoparticles

Iron oxide dust, discarded as industrial waste, has been used here to fabricate magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4-NPs). We have proposed the thermo-catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) using Fe3O4-NPs in the presence of H2O2 to get acetic acid (AcOH) at near ambient conditions (100 °C, 10 bar) with a maximum yield of ∼0.4 M in a batch-reactor. The importance of H2O2 can be described as it facilitates the production of higher concentrations of OH˙ and H+/˙, which consequently supports the synthesis of AcOH.

Enhanced ability of toluene oxidation by controlling inversion degree of spinel composed of only Co, Mn

Exploring the single relationship between the inversion degree of spinel and its catalytic performance is a great challenge, but has important significance for further structural design and application. A series of CoMn inverse spinels were prepared and the general formula [Formula: see text] was deduced through X-ray diffraction refinement to find a decreased inversion degree x as calcination temperature rose. Catalytic oxidation of toluene showed that higher inversion degree (S-300 with x ≈ 0.95) can reach larger conversion rate (90 % at about 250 °C for 400 ppm toluene) with greater reaction stability (140 h). Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations on density of states indicated its metallic nature, and found that the strength of O-p and Transition metal-d orbitals at Fermi energy is positively correlated to the inversion degree, meaning stronger electron migration ability. Along with the adsorption calculation analysis that lattice oxygen species are proved to work dominantly (S-300 with lowest adsorption energy but highest performance), this work uncovered a theoretical insight into inverse spinel oxide, to provide the possibility of elevated oxidation ability through structural control.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions from internal floating-roof tank in oil depots in Beijing: Influencing factors and emission reduction strategies analysis

The internal floating-roof tank is the main type of storage tank for refined oil products. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission from the internal floating-roof tank plays a dominant role in the unorganized emission source of the oil depot. In this study, we selected six typical oil depots in Beijing to investigate VOC emission characteristics from the tank top vent hole using infrared imaging technology and flame ionization detector (FID). The results reveal that infrared thermal imager is efficient in quickly identifying the emission level of the tank discharge point. The ambient temperature and wind speed have a direct effect on sealing loss, the turnover can greatly influence the wall hanging loss, and the concentration of VOCs emitted from the tank top vent hole is negatively correlated with liquid height. Furthermore, the influence of accessories type of the internal floating-roof tank on the concentration of VOCs emission from the top vent hole is also studied when other parameters remain unchanged, and find the floating deck type and sealing mode have a significant influence on their VOCs emissions, of which the combination of pontoon type floating deck and secondary seal are effective in controlling the concentration of VOCs emitted from the tank top vent hole. Finally, based on our experimental results, several feasible emission reduction strategies are proposed in terms of source prevention and process control in order to achieve the fine management of the whole process. This paper provides important technical support and policy thoughts for VOCs emission control during oil storage.

Multi-Functional Formaldehyde-Nitrate Batteries for Wastewater Refining, Electricity Generation, and Production of Ammonia and Formate

As bulky pollutants in industrial and agricultural wastewater, nitrate and formaldehyde pose serious threats to the human health and ecosystem. Current purification technologies including chemical and bio-/photo-/electro-chemical methods, are generally high-cost, time-consuming, or energy-intensive. Here, we report a novel formaldehyde-nitrate battery by pairing anodic formaldehyde oxidation with cathodic nitrate reduction, which simultaneously enables wastewater purification, electricity generation, and the production of high-value-added ammonia and formate. As a result, the formaldehyde-nitrate battery remarkably exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 0.75 V, a peak power density of 3.38 mW cm-2 and the yield rates of 32.7 mg h-1  cm-2 for ammonia and 889.4 mg h-1  cm-2 for formate. In a large-scale formaldehyde-nitrate battery (25 cm2 ), 99.9 % of nitrate and 99.8 % of formaldehyde are removed from simulated industrial wastewater and the electricity of 2.03 W⋅h per day is generated. Moreover, the design of such a multi-functional battery is universally applicable to the coupling of NO3 - or NO2 - reduction with various aldehyde oxidization, paving a new avenue for wastewater purification and chemical manufacturing.

Thermocatalytic oxidation of a binary mixture of formaldehyde and toluene at ambient levels by a titanium dioxide supported platinum catalyst

The thermocatalytic oxidative potential of various supported noble metal catalysts (SNMCs) is well-known for hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs), e.g., formaldehyde (FA) and toluene. However, little is known about SNMC performance against ambient VOC pollution with low concentration (subppm levels) relative to industrial effuluents with high concentrations (several hundred ppm). Here, the thermocatalytic oxidation performance of a titanium dioxide (TiO2)-supported platinum catalyst (Pt/TiO2) has been evaluated for a low-concentration binary mixture of FA and toluene at low temperatures and in the dark. A sample of TiO2 containing 1 wt% Pt with thermal reduction pre-treatment under hydrogen achieved 100 % conversion of FA (500 ppb) and toluene (100 ppb) at 130 °C and a gas hourly velocity of 59,701 h-1. Its catalytic activity was lowered by either a decrease in catalyst mass or an increase in VOC concentration, relative humidity, or flow rate. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, density functional theory simulations, and molecular oxygen (O2) temperature-programmed desorption experiments were used to identify possible VOC oxidation pathways, reaction mechanisms, and associated surface phenomena. The present work is expected to offer insights into the utility of metal oxide-supported Pt catalysts for the low-temperature oxidative removal of gaseous VOCs in the dark, primarily for indoor air quality management.

Modulating the Electronic States of Pt Nanoparticles on Reducible Metal-Organic Frameworks for Boosting the Oxidation of Volatile Organic Compounds

The adsorption and activation of pollutant molecules and oxygen play a critical role in the oxidation reaction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, superior adsorption and activation ability was achieved by modulating the interaction between Pt nanoparticles (NPs) and UiO-66 (U6) through the spatial position effect. Pt@U6 exhibits excellent activity in toluene, acetone, propane, and aldehyde oxidation reactions. Spectroscopic studies, 16O2/18O2 kinetic isotopic experiments, and density functional theory (DFT) results jointly reveal that the encapsulated Pt NPs of Pt@U6 possess higher electron density and d-band center, which is conducive for the adsorption and dissociation of oxygen. The toluene oxidation reaction and DFT results indicate that Pt@U6 is more favorable to activate the C-H of toluene and the C═C of maleic anhydride, while Pt/U6 with lower electron density and d-band center exhibits a higher oxygen dissociation temperature and higher reactant activation energy barriers. This study provides a deep insight into the architecture-performance relation of Pt-based catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of VOCs.
